The Night We Met - Chapter 5
|| Premise: What if Dawnbreaker's wish for one day and one night with the woman who lives only in his dreams... came true? ||
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | (Updates Weekly)
Walking into the arcade was similar to walking into a wall made entirely of sound and pulsing light – the door chimed as the couple stepped through it, the woman pulling Zayne through the aperture and into the lively atmosphere beyond. He stopped in his tracks about a foot past the entrance, his green eyes opening wide as his mouth fell open.
Rows upon rows of brilliantly lit glass boxes flashed and hummed in front of him as jaunty music circulated throughout the venue, the different rhythms and tunes clashing and blending in turn. Inside the boxes were many mechanical contraptions, some resembling claws, others looked like pincers, some had magnets, and still more had broad sweeping arms. And then there were the prizes…
Colorful little creatures of all shapes and sizes filled the machines, all with cute tiny faces and funny names that were depicted across the walls of the establishment in myriad posters and ads. A few machines even held things like fancy earbuds, cell phones, and other tech gadgets that Zayne couldn’t name. He managed to close his mouth after a moment, feeling the woman tug gently on his arm, her fingers nestled in the crook of his elbow.
Flicking his eyes over to meet hers, Zayne tried to compose himself, not wanting to show how taken aback he was by the onslaught of sound and color. He was willing to try whatever she wanted, no matter how different it might be from his norm. The last thing he wanted was for her to be put out by his hesitancy or for his attitude to bring the mood down.
Instead of derision or annoyance meeting his gaze, the woman was looking at him with a gentle smile. Squeezing his arm softly, she asked, “You alright? I know it’s probably much louder than you’re used to, but it can be quite fun. She tossed a glance over her shoulder, eyes scanning the room for her favorite machine – the spinning claw. She then looked back at Zayne and leaned in towards the taller man, rising onto her tiptoes, her voice a whisper. “However, if it does bother you… we don’t have to stay.” Holding his gaze, she nodded reassuringly, trying to impart that she wanted him to be comfortable. This had become his day out, after all. It wouldn’t do to have him not enjoy the small amount of time he had to explore this vibrant version of his city.
Zayne’s unease at the overpowering amount of sensations melted away at her words. She cared? She was willing to leave the place that made her so excited, just because it made him uncomfortable? The woman had barely been around him for any amount of time, and yet already seemed attuned to his body language, able to sense his inner turmoil. This was the second time she had clocked it. First on the street, now here. Then again, perhaps he showed his unease in much the same way as the doctor. That must be it.
Shaking his head, Zayne managed a small smile in response, gesturing with his right hand towards the machines. “No, please. I’ll be alright. It just takes… some getting used to, is all.”  He realized he was still holding the small bag of macarons in that hand and slipped them into his large coat pocket. As he did, Zayne realized his- no, the doctor’s wallet… was in that pocket – where he would normally keep it. His smile grew almost imperceptibly as his eyes scanned the sea of machines and the few patrons that were at them, then settled on the desk with the register and an attendant.
Returning his gaze to the woman’s upturned face, he withdrew his hand from his pocket and made a small flourishing gesture towards the desk. Her face lit up with excitement, her lips parting in pleasant surprise; the lights of the arcade danced and sparkled in her eyes, almost taking Zayne’s breath away for a moment. Gods, she was beautiful. He tore his eyes from her lips, feeling his ears start to flush and his heart rate skyrocket. Now was not the time to start getting all flustered. Besides, she wasn’t dating him. She was with the doctor. Right.
Zayne started towards the salmon-pink desk with the attendant, sidestepping past a running child and drawing the woman along with him in the process. He bent slightly, murmuring in her ear, “Is there a specific package or something you normally buy here?” Zayne had scanned the list of prices behind the desk and still didn’t quite understand exactly how the arcade’s pricing system worked. There seemed to be options for purchasing credits, or packages that held a certain number of attempts.
Nodding, the woman went on tiptoe again, her hair brushing against his cheek as she spoke conspiratorially into his ear, “Normally we get the one with 5 attempts. Maybe we buy another, depending on our luck that day. Rarely more than three packages, though.” She laughed, speaking teasingly, “Gotta save some plushies for later, y’know.” Reaching the desk, Zayne stopped, somewhat unsure of how to proceed, until the chipper attendant stepped forward with a bright smile.
“Welcome to Twinkle! How may I assist you today? Would you be interested in purchasing one of our new packages?” The attendant’s voice was bright and welcoming as she pointed to a large sign next to the register that read: ‘Buy 20, get 5 attempts free!’ Zayne’s gaze followed the attendant’s gesture, taking in the numbers and thinking about what the woman on his arm had said. Let the doctor save plushies for later. Zayne pulled out the wallet and flipped through it, selecting a card at random and praying the doctor paid his bills.
“That sounds like a great deal – we’ll take it.” Zayne held out the card to the attendant before the woman at his side could say anything, watching as the cheerful attendant whisked the card away to complete the purchase. A soft gasp of surprise sounded beside him, and he felt the flush that had previously decorated his ears return in an instant. Zayne wondered for a moment if he had been reckless; if perhaps his rash decision to spoil the woman from his dreams had backfired. Before his thoughts could entirely derail him, her voice broke through the whirlwind in his mind.
“You… didn’t have to do that. I know you aren’t too keen on this place, even on the best of days,” she said, glancing up at Zayne in surprise. She knew that her Zayne wasn’t always enthused about the arcade, despite being a good sport, and with the way the man beside her balked at sounds and crowds, his impulsive purchase left her pleasantly baffled. He turned towards her, swallowing his worry as soon as he saw the excitement in her eyes.
“But you are, right?” Zayne’s voice was low and somewhat husky. “I want to do whatever makes you happy.” The words were out before he could stop them, spilling from his lips like a fountain overflowing. He froze, realizing that he had said out loud what he had been thinking just a little while ago, the reason he had impulsively purchased the new package. Dammit. Inside thoughts should stay inside. “I… I just thought... you seemed so excited when we came in…” Zayne’s ears burned as he tried to salvage the conversation. She wasn’t supposed to know how much he cared for her. How much he loved her. That could be dangerous.
The moment was thankfully interrupted by the attendant who had come back over, presenting him with two cards – the payment option he had provided and the card with the twenty-five attempts he had just paid for loaded onto it. Zayne took the cards, grateful for the interruption. If she had thought what he said was odd, she didn’t give any sign of it.
“Here you are, sir – these work on every machine here, even the premium ones,” said the attendant, lowering her voice slightly as she continued. “You two make such a cute couple, I added an upgrade for you.” She winked at them and exclaimed, “Have fun now!”
Zayne had started to turn away, having thanked the attendant after the first sentence, his ears and his mind wholly unprepared for the next statement out of the peppy lady’s mouth. His eyes widened slightly as he stammered another ‘Thank you’, and then he was being dragged off towards the spinning claw machine. A cute couple. The words echoed in his pink-tinged ears, ricocheting around inside his brain. She thought…
Shaking his head, Zayne shoved the thought and the emotions it carried with it far away, deep into the recesses of his mind. Of course, the attendant thought they were a couple – he knew from his dreams that the doctor often visited the arcade with the woman. Of course, the attendant must recognize them, the doctor and the woman. But not him. The attendant had no way of knowing he wasn’t the doctor. No way of knowing he was an imposter, an interloper upon a relationship that wasn’t his, that could never be his. But maybe for a moment… Zayne bit down on his tongue, hard enough that the pain made him wince slightly. No.
“Look! They have the new plushie!” The overjoyed words brought him back out of his thoughts as the woman came to a stop in front of the spinning claw machine. “I’ve never seen this one here before!” Zayne stepped up next to her, scanning over the plushies in the machine. Having never actually been in the arcade, he wasn’t really sure which one she meant at first until he followed her finger. There, slowly spinning towards the front, was a small, black cat plushie.
Memories of the little stuffed cat from his childhood resurfaced for the second time in the past half hour, and Zayne’s eyebrows went up incredulously, hiding beneath his dark hair. It wasn’t exactly the same as the one he remembered, but the differences were negligible. What were the odds? He felt a wry laugh trying to force its way out of his chest and cleared his throat instead, not wanting her to think he was laughing at her choice of plushie.
“Is that the one you want, then?” Zayne tilted his head as he asked, watching the curve of her lips as she smiled and nodded breathlessly, noting how her joy suffused her eyes and lit up her whole face. He held out the card, chuckling softly as she snatched it excitedly and pressed it to the scanner on the machine.
The music coming from the machine changed, a welcoming jingle suddenly playing while a tinny robotic voice wished them good luck. The woman looked back up at Zayne and gestured to the controls. “Howabout you try it first?” She smiled encouragingly, hoping he would take her up on her offer. “I get to play this all the time.” For some reason she couldn’t quite name, her heart twinged at the idea that this might be this Zayne’s only chance to try out an arcade. To have possibly only one day, and so many new things to see and do… Putting the melancholy thought out of her head, she nodded decisively and reached for his hands, taking them gently and placing them on the controls of the machine.
Zayne had been planning on refusing, not wanting to take any enjoyment from her. He had bought the package for her to use, after all. But when her warm hands encompassed his cold ones, lifting them and setting one on the joystick and one over the button to activate the claw, he found himself at a loss for words. Glancing nervously up at the claw, then back down at her, Zayne opened his mouth, trying to figure out how to politely tell her that he would only ruin her chances at getting the plushie she wanted. He had never done this before. Watched it done, sure. But watching and doing are often very different things. His gaze drifted back to the claw, wondering if it was really as easy as it sometimes looked.
Suddenly, something brushed the underside of his right arm. Before Zayne could even register what was happening, the woman had ducked under his arm and popped up in front of him, allowing his arms to encircle her. She placed her left hand atop his left hand where it rested on the joystick and set her right hand lightly over his right hand, barely touching it so as not to accidentally press the button. Leaning backward slightly, she tilted her head back and to the side, smiling up at him as she spoke. “Well do it together then, yeah? I can show you how.”
The warmth of her body against his made Zayne’s heart skip a beat, and the feeling of her hands lightly skimming over the backs of his hands sent goosebumps running up his arms under his coat. She was so close. Her face was only a few inches from his, her eyes practically glowing from the lights of the machine above them.
For an instant, Zayne could feel her breath on his cheek, the curve of her back against his chest, the weight of her arms just barely resting on his, ready to guide him. So, this was heaven. Words remained out of his reach, but he managed to nod, unable to tear his gaze away from her face. If ears could combust, his would have; the skin on them as red as one of the little tomato plushies in the claw machine.
Completely unaware of the effect she was having on him, the woman turned back to the machine, her fingers curling around his as she began to guide the joystick, maneuvering it towards the cat plushie. Zayne let her guide his hand, his brain doing its level best not to short circuit at the feeling of her palm pressing against the back of his hand, at just the overall closeness of her. The doctor must be an idiot to not be keen on the arcade. He couldn’t help but step forward just a touch, peering over her and down to see how she was operating the machine. If the movement also brought him not quite flush against her… that was just a bonus.
When the claw came to a stop just above and ahead of the plushie, she pressed down on the back of Zayne’s right hand, depressing the button below his palm and sending the claw down on its journey. “C’mon, c’mon…” Her voice was a breathy whisper, barely making it to Zayne’s ears, but the sound of it so close to him sent a tingling sensation running up his spine. They both watched as the claw descended, enclosing the cat plushie’s head and lifting it… only to drop it a second later, leaving it on its side, still spinning along with the rest of the plushies.
“Drat, they always do that,” said the woman, her voice tinged with only the slightest bit of disappointment. “Guess we just have to try again. Thanks to someone, we have plenty of attempts!” She sent an enthusiastic smile back over her shoulder at Zayne, pausing only a little when she realized how close he was to her suddenly - his arms on either side of her, his chest brushing against the back of her sundress.
For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she should be worried about having him so close since this wasn’t technically her Zayne. But he felt like Zayne. No anxiety filled her at his closeness, no worries lingered at the back of her mind, other than the constant undercurrent of concern for her Zayne, wherever he might be. She realized that she felt just as safe with this hunter as she normally felt with her doctor – Zayne’s presence was always a quiet, steady rock, grounding her and keeping her calm amidst whatever might be happening around them. No matter what time or place he came from, it seemed. Her gaze scanned his face for a moment, not really knowing what she was even searching for there.
Zayne felt her eyes on him, his heart thudding almost painfully inside his ribcage as he brought his gaze to meet hers, so very aware of the minuscule amount of space that separated most of their bodies. A desert had materialized in his mouth and throat, and he wasn’t sure if he should take a step back or a step forward. Either might be perilous at the moment. He settled on remaining as still as a statue, not wanting to jeopardize the fragile situation.
The moment ended as quickly as it had begun, the woman averting her gaze after just a second, turning back towards the machine when the claw made a metallic screeching sound. It had returned to its spot in the upper lefthand corner, awaiting their instructions. The interruption allowed Zayne to find his voice, though it came out a bit rougher at first than he had intended.
“Shall we try again?” Zayne asked, pausing for a second before adding, “This is more fun than I anticipated it would be.” His words were met with laughter as the hand atop his began guiding the joystick once more.
__________________________________________
Over an hour and 24 more attempts later, the two of them emerged triumphantly from the arcade, the little cat plushie tucked lovingly under one of the woman’s arms and two more plushies sitting in Zayne’s large coat pockets. The time spent in the arcade had gone by in a whirlwind – it seemed like only just a little while had passed before the machine they were using had beeped loudly, asking for the card to be swiped again.
Zayne watched as she held up the cat plushie, spinning around happily with it once they were outside and clear of the door, a look of unbridled glee decorating her face. A grin broke out on his face as well – he had known of her wild and carefree nature from his dreams, but to see it in person was… something else. It gave his soul wings. Seeing her this exuberant and triumphant made his heart soar, especially knowing that she felt that way because of something she had done with him. With him. Not the doctor. With him.
Letting go of the door to the arcade, Zayne moved to stand beside her, putting out an arm to steady her as her spin finished. One hand grazed the small of her back, the other holding the bag of macarons that no longer fit in his pocket. She leaned against his hand for a moment, catching her breath, then gestured to the macarons. “I’m surprised you haven’t munched all of those already.”
He glanced down at the bag – truthfully, he had forgotten all about them while they were in the arcade. Maybe it was the proximity to the woman he loved, or maybe those claw machines were just more fun than they had first appeared, but whatever it was, time had flown by. Zayne opened the bag and pulled one out, holding it out to her, smiling as he asked, “Help me eat them?”
“You don’t have to ask me twice,” she said teasingly, leaning forward and taking a bite from the macaron, her arms wrapped around the plushie as she held it against her chest. His heart lurched as her lips brushed against his fingers, the sensation there and then gone as quickly as it had come. Zayne froze for a second, the half-eaten macaron still in his hand. The clock on the tower across the street suddenly rang out loudly, the booming sound tolling to announce the hour.
The spell her lips had cast was broken, and Zayne glanced up at the clock, his heart sinking as he noted the time. Noon. How was it already noon? He brought what was left of the macaron to his lips, popping it into his mouth and chewing, but the flavor wasn’t the same as it had been at the café. Not with the knowledge that over four hours of the day had already come and gone.
The day had started to warm up while they were inside the arcade, but the breeze felt cold on the back of Zayne’s neck. Time was passing too quickly. The icy feeling on the back of his neck trickled down his spine. He felt her take the bag from him, the movement causing him to look back down at her after a moment. She was holding out another macaron, one arm extended, hovering it just in front of his face. The cat plushie was tucked back under her other arm, the empty bag crumpled in her hand.
Zayne flicked his gaze to the macaron and then back to hers, wondering if she meant for him to take a bite out of it as she had done. Surely not. But then again… What would it hurt? If this was all the time he had with her, he would make the most of it. Leaning forward, he tentatively took a bite, fighting against the instinct to hover his lips over her knuckles, to kiss her fingertips. Zayne’s lips brushed against her thumb as he bit through the small dessert, her fingernail lightly grazing his bottom lip and sending an electric sensation through him. For some reason, this macaron tasted infinitely better than the last one. He pulled back, chewing slowly and savoring the taste.
If the woman noticed anything amiss in his expression or action, she didn’t mention it. Instead, she just smiled and tossed the rest of the macaron into her mouth, finishing it off. She glanced to the side, her eyes landing on an advertisement for the new botanical garden that had just opened. Remembering how desolate he had said his city was, an idea began to form in her mind. Turning back to Zayne, she held out her hand. With only an instant of hesitation, he then placed his hand in hers, letting her lead the way.

untitled (part 4)
The man you stumbled into is bleeding out. And he's distractingly pretty.
nav: one, two, three, four (current), five, six or: read on ao3
tags: sylus x reader, an au where you're an average citizen, slow burn, mentions of blood, fluff, you panic bc of his lethal face card, valid reaction tbh, 10/10 would do the same
Tumblr media
Interacting directly with a beautiful man reduces you to an idiot, you realize.
You’ve met attractive men before—had crushes on such men. They weren’t necessarily easy on the eyes, but there was always something they said, did, or had that made you feel some type of way about them. The seventh-grade classmate who shushed your chattering peers during your presentation. The corner store clerk with pretty hands. The college senior who made you feel welcome at your acquaintance party. The tall guy who unknowingly saved you from getting squished by the sardine-packed commuters on the train.
Sure, your next interactions with them made you hyper-aware of their presence for a time—hanging on to their every word and unknowingly seeking them out in the room. But you think you remained fairly casual and blasé with them, as you do with most things.
Unlike right now.
As your mind begins to clear, you register that you’re stripped down to just your base layer. In the middle of winter. Your puffer jacket lies damp on the ground, and your sweater—now sporting huge splotches of blood—is folded haphazardly against the man’s abdomen. (You try not to let the sight of the dark liquid summon the remains of your dinner.)
Your gaze flickers between his ruined shirt and your clasped hands, cupped by his much larger, warmer ones. When you look up, you’re taken aback to find his intense garnet eyes already locked on you.
“Are you alright?” he asks, the deep, velvety timbre of his voice compelling you to straighten up unconsciously.
“Yes,” you splutter, air barely making it past your throat. Then, your eyes widen. “Are you alright?” you stress, gesturing wildly to the concerning state of his abdominal area.
He chuckles. “Never been better.”
You gape at him. “But you’re bleeding!”
He glances down at his bloodied clothes. “It appears so.”
You like to think you have a good head on your shoulders. You always stay on the correct side of the sidewalk. You tidy up your table as much as you can at food joints. You try to abide by city recycling guidelines to make life easier for sanitation workers. And you’re decently vigilant, thanks to the countless true crime documentaries you’ve crammed into your brain.
But alas, it seems a beautiful man is all it takes for common sense to call it a day.
“Okay, so I actually won some groceries earlier, and I think I have some first-aid supplies in there,” you babble, missing the knowing glint in his eyes. “My house is just a little further down the street. If you want, I can treat your wound there?”
He’s still holding your hands. You realize your palms must be clammy from cold sweat—and his blood. You politely pull your hands back with a laugh you hope sounds natural. (It doesn’t.)
“Oh wait, you probably need a hospital,” you blurt, mentally berating yourself for not considering this first. You start fishing for your phone in your jeans pocket. “I can call the emergency hotline for Akso Hospital. I work there. Um, I can even ride with you in the ambulance if you’d like?”
The man laughs, his eyes crinkling in amusement.
“I appreciate the help, sweetie, but you shouldn’t be so quick to give out personal information to people you just met.”
Heat creeps up your neck. He’s right. You’re basically handing him a free pass to rob your place. What if he’s a serial killer?
As you feel yourself spiraling further, he begins to stand, grabbing your dropped jacket as he rises. You instinctively lean back, mouth agape at his towering height and the fact that he just stood up—quite gracefully—despite clutching his wound mere moments ago.
“I’ll have your sweater washed and dry-cleaned,” he says, folding the soiled fabrics neatly into compact squares. “Know that your assistance back there is much appreciated.”
“Oh—! It was nothing. I’m just glad you’re okay.”
A single snowflake lands on your face and you blink, nose twitching at the gentle melting sensation. Looking up, you notice the sky is now a beautiful backdrop of powdery snow, falling softly around you.
“It’s getting late,” he observes, also gazing up at the scenery. “Let me walk you home.”
Before you can protest, he drapes his coat over your shoulders. You’re immediately overwhelmed by the scent of fresh linen and something distinctly masculine that has you instinctively relaxing into the warm confines of the comically oversized garment.
“But aren’t you cold?” you ask, unknowingly tucking yourself further into his coat.
“No,” he responds with a hint of laughter, pressing a hand to your back to gently guide you toward the park entrance.
The short walk to your house is surprisingly comfortable. Aside from occasionally fumbling over your words and avoiding his gaze (his face is distractingly handsome, and his impressive height and physique make you strangely self-conscious), you manage a decent conversation.
You learn he was taking a casual stroll when he had a “squabble” with some old business partners. You can only stare at the back of his head at this revelation. What kind of squabble leads to a wound like that? And how is he acting so fine now? If it weren’t for the bloodstain on his expensive-looking high-neck top, you’d think you hallucinated the whole thing.
You also learn he’s visiting the city on a business trip. After hearing this, the rest of the walk is filled with you recommending your favorite places: the food spots you’re yet to use your lifetime vouchers for, the cat café with the snooty caracal you love petting, and the old arcade where you’ve won most of your plushie collection. (You make sure to share with him a few secret tricks for mastering the darn two-pronged claw machine.)
Belatedly, it dawns on you that such activities might hold little interest for a man like him. Flustered, you open your mouth to undo the torrent of nonsense you’ve been spouting, when he suddenly stops and turns to face you.
“Your recommendations are duly noted,” he says, eyes glowing with amusement. “I’ll be sure to try them sometime.”
You’ve arrived at your house. You're surprised by the unexpected pang of disappointment you feel.
“Thank you for walking me home,” you murmur, suddenly feeling shy.
He hands over your now-drier puffer jacket. “It was my pleasure. Now go inside before you turn into an icicle.”
“Oh—your coat,” you exclaim, beginning to shrug it off. But he stops you with a raised hand.
“Keep it,” he tells you. “I’ll get it back when I return your sweater.”
You hesitate. “Are you sure?”
“Of course.” Then, as if recalling a secret you’re not privy to, he smiles softly. “I trust it’ll be in safe hands. You seem exceptional at caring for things.”
Before you can unpack his words, he turns and starts walking toward the main road.
“Wait! What’s your name?” You can't believe you haven't asked till now.
He pauses before glancing over his shoulder.
“Sylus,” he finally says.
“Sylus,” you repeat, liking the way it rolls off your tongue. “It’s a pretty name.”
Your hand flies to your mouth, eyes widening in horror. Why not tell him he’s hot while you’re at it, doofus?
As you fumble for an apology and prepare to sentence yourself to a blabbermouth timeout, he chuckles.
“Indeed it is.”
You can’t quite put your finger on it, but there’s a trace of melancholy in his voice that stays with you.
With a wave, he walks into the snowy dark, his figure gradually fading.
And that’s when it hits you.
How did he know which house was yours?

you were late, you were so late, and you couldn’t blame anyone but yourself.
today has been marked in your calendar for almost 2 months, the day that ateez finally had a fanmeet in your city. you had saved up for the event for so long that when they announced it you didn’t hesitate to snatch your card out of your wallet to buy tickets for you and your best friend, kaylani.
but today you completely fucked your schedule up. oversleeping was not in your plans and neither was having to iron your outfit and rush to catch the train, just for it to delay for 15 minutes. in addition to the 5 minute bus ride from the station turning into a 30 minute walk because the bus you and your friend needed to catch didn’t run that day. who knew?
by the time you finally got to the venue, security were already trying to lock up the doors. i mean, it made sense considering they started meeting fans almost two hours ago.
“hey!!” kaylani shouted to try and get the guards attention. one of them looked up, utter confusion on his face as he watched two young girls jogging at them from across the parking lot.
“please we- we have tickets. the train made us late, but we cannot miss this event” you breathed out as fast as possible, trying to catch your breath at the same time. lani shuffled around for her phone to pull up the virtual tickets before the guards shrugged and scanned both tickets to let you in. “you girls either have really incredible or really horrible timing” one of the guys commented and told you to have fun.
you both squealed the second you got inside.
following the arrows and signs, you reached the auditorium that ateez was having their fanmeet in. now usually, fanmeets had a show in the first half and the actual meet in the second. but thankfully this time around it was swapped, meaning you guys didn’t miss any of the actual show. would it possibly be delayed because you were late? ehhh you’d cross that bridge when you got to it.
“we’re really here holy shit that’s ateez 20 feet away from us-“ you started rambling before lani cut through your thoughts with another squeal. she saw her bias, that had to be the only reason
“ITS JONGHOOO AHHHH”
“wow kaylani, it’s almost like he’s in the grou- AHHH LOOK ITS HONGJOONG”
kaylani rolled her eyes and mocked you. “wow y/n it’s almost like he’s in the group.” touché.
it wasn’t long before you realized they had changed quite a bit for this fanmeet. for example, the boys weren’t sitting in age order, or what you and lani called “fanchant order”. jongho was first and hongjoong was last, which didn’t really matter, but you knew your heart would race more and more as you got closer to your bias.
joong was your ult bias and had been for 4 years. you loved all of the members (duh) but the thought of possibly holding that man’s hand sent you over the moon. sure he held other girls hands, but this was gonna be your moment.
“bro. bro we’re next” kaylani whisper shouted while gripping your shoulder.
“unhand me you fein- oh god that’s jongho like he’s real.”
“RIGHT THATS THE CHOI JONGHO. 4TH GEN VOCALIST AHHHH” if you couldn’t tell she was a jongho ult before, it was super evident now. and because of that, you let lani go first.
******
if she could’ve, kaylani would’ve talked jongho’s ear off for 40 minutes. luckily he seemed intrigued by what was being said, laughing and giggling along with your friend. and now you wish you went first instead.
eventually she moved to wooyoung and was out-yapped, while you talked to jongho, really just telling him all of your favorite runs and verses he had. then you moved down again, and again, got to san and almost forgot your morals. he had you giggling for your life and the blush on your face was impossible to hide. he was THE ateez flirt.
but you and kaylani kept moving. to be real, since you were the last people in the room, there was no real rush but you decided to be mindful of the boys time.
yunho and yeosang were adorably nerdy and a hint of shy in real life, seonghwa really knew how to catch you off guard. one second you were talking about his lego collection and the next he was spewing out compliments and grabbing your hand. you tried to turn your face to hide your blush again, but you turned right into hongjoong’s direction and almost screamed. he was staring at you, and hard. what you hadn’t realized was kaylani whispering how much you “loved him” and how he was your “ultimate bias and first choice for a husband.”
yea you were either gonna go back to jongho and tell him how she brought his photocard to prom, or you were going to murder her.
you finished with seonghwa and slowly moved to hongjoong while lani stood off to the side and snuck a few pictures. “so. i’m your ult huh?” hongjoong questioned, arms folded across his chest.
you gulped, “y-yea you’ve always stuck out to me,” your voice came out in a whisper. hongjoong chuckled and leaned forward a bit.
“i’m your ult but you have no problem flirting with san and seonghwa in front of me, yea?”
“i don’t see the difference between that and you holding a bunch of fans hands, flirting with them.”
your mouth worked faster than your brain could, and you regretted it the second you finished the sentence, slapping your hand over your mouth.
hongjoong tilted his head and raised an eyebrow over the rim of his glasses. god he looked good in glasses. “quite the mouth on you…”
“y/n” you finished his sentence.
“y/n..” he trailed off like he was letting your name marinate on his tongue. “really pretty name for a really pretty person”
now you were really blushing. you didn’t care if it was fan service, he was servicing the hell out of you and you were eating it up. “thank you joong..” and he smirked in return.
******
you talked for a while (ok like 5 minutes) praising joong just like you did all the other members. he asked you what your favorite songs were, and san jumped in when he heard you mention desire. “honestly such a hater, desire is a masterpiece!!” you exclaimed as the top desire defender in tinyville. joong and san laughed before san walked off backstage and hongjoong picked up his sharpie, doodling while you talked.
you just kept going, your level of yapping surpassing kaylani while she was talking to jongho. hongjoong was eating it up though, especially when you started listing your favorite rap verse from him, even saying you could tell an ateez song by his signature giggle.
“it’s a bit embarrassing but i’ve listened to the songs so much that i just know? your music saved me, genuinely.” you trailed off before joong grabbed your hand.
“i honestly think it’s adorable.” he replied with a genuine smile. his smile was warm and bright, like lights on a christmas tree in december. you were soon brought back to reality when a guard told joong he had to wrap up with you so they could move on to the show. he nodded while messily writing something on a small piece of paper with his non dominant hand, still holding your hand with his other.
“well i guess this is goodbye, y/n. it was really nice talking to you and your friend” joong said, subtly crumbling a paper up in his hand before going to slip it into your own.
you weren’t dumb, you played like you didn’t even realize, following along with his skit. “it was really nice to meet you joongie,” you replied with a soft smile before you both got up and walked in your respective directions.
******
“you aren’t slick joong, i saw that.” san whispered while the group got dressed for the next part of the show. he was putting on a school boy uniform, adjusting the blue tie that went with it. hongjoong sat next to him, tying the shoes that he swapped into.
“doesn’t matter if you saw it, managers didn’t see it.” he responded with a shrug. joong knew him getting caught would mean having to change his number and most likely block you if you ever reached out to him, but in his head it was worth the risk.
“if i saw it, how do you know they didn’t see it captain?”
“because i waited till they turned around. and to be honest, i don’t care if they saw. i liked her.”
“liked who?” wooyoung asked as he walked over to steal san’s cologne. “because if you mean the last two people that came in, i don’t blame you! the last one was extremely pretty..”
joong just shot wooyoung a side eye before grabbing his phone, letting out a small sigh at the sight of no notification from you. he thought you guys had a little connection, right? then again-
“she probably just thought you were servicing her. ya know, your job.” san said stiffly, fixing a few stray strands of hair. joong clicked his phone off and threw it to his side with a slight head shake. maybe san was right, you probably didn’t look much into it considering it was his job to service his fans. maybe the managers did see him and they took the paper after you were out of joong’s sight. he was getting stressed over a girl he just met and even though his friends were talking to him in logic, hongjoong refused to learn that language.
he let out another small sigh before ruffling his hair and clapping his hands together to gather the group to get on stage. he had to clear his mind so he could perform. “alright guys let’s do this. hana dul set,”
“fightingggg!!” the boys yelled in unison and cheered, hyping each other up for what was to come. one by one, the boys started leaving the dressing room to take their places in the wings of the stage curtains.
seonghwa made sure everyone made it out, before looking back to see hongjoong lagging behind. “you coming bub?” joong looked at hwa, then his phone on the couch, and back to hwa before sending him a quick nod and walking out the door.
he’d be able to make it through the show.. right?
******
“soooo we’re just gonna ignore what happened back there? you know i saw that right love?” kaylani pressed you while fixing her lip gloss, making you jump out of your thoughts.
“what happened?? we just had a normal conversation!”
“normal my ass. you talked for like five minutes and then KIM HONGJOONG SLID YOU HIS-“
you slapped your hand over her mouth. you were in the empty bathroom but there was no reason to take any chances of a manager, or even worse, a fan overhearing and reporting back to one. “kay, i love you. dearly. but please lower your voice love…”
she sighed behind your hand and obliged before complaining about you smudging her lip combo. you rolled your eyes and pulled the crumbled sheet of paper from out of your jacket pocket to show your friend. the numbers were a bit wayward, but joong was writing with his left hand so it was understandable. he somehow still managed to make it legible enough for you to understand though.
“it’s his kakao talk im assuming. i still have the app from when you and i had to use it when i was in seoul.”
“do you know for sure it’s his number ?”
“of course i don’t know for sure kay, im trying not to lose my mind right n-“
“text it.”
that may have seemed like the obvious answer but you were still extremely nervous about getting caught. and the idea of getting caught by a manager was still circling around in your brain. “there’s a chance that he’s waiting for your text ya know. just text it and see.” kaylani finished with a shrug, her lips popping as she finished up her lip combo. you took a deep breath before shakily grabbing your phone and opening your kakao talk.
what were you even going to say ? hi ? that sounded basic but there really wasn’t much else to do. there was no reason to say your full name because, well, what if it wasn’t truly him ? lani must’ve gotten bored of watching you stare at your phone without typing anything because after a few seconds your phone was in her hands as she drafted up and sent a message for you.
“KAYLANI !???”
“it’s fine, i just said hey and that it was the girl from the fanmeet. unless he’s going around giving his number out to every pretty girl like a whore, he’ll know it’s you.”
she handed your phone back to you before throwing her hands on your shoulders and flashing you a slight smile. “it’ll be fine ok? now let’s go watch our boys do the utmost embarrassing shit!”
you nodded in response and stepped out of the bathroom to make your way to your seats.
now what your best friend didn’t know when you bought your tickets was that you saved enough for front row. and the surprise was pretty evident by the screech she let out once you dragged her to the seats in front of the stage.
“no way no way we’re this close HOLY- y/n forget hongjoong will you please marry me???”
you just laughed and playfully pushed lani towards her seat, “get off of me and sit down goofball.”
******
“2 minutes to showtime!!”
the lights were dimming as the members stood in the wings of the stage, mic packs being adjusted and pinned onto the boys. wooyoung was humming some vocal warmups to himself before he walked over to hongjoong. “jeez captain, lighten up. you look like yeosang told you that hwa was his favorite hyung and not you…”
hongjoong jumped, unnoticeable to wooyoung, and scoffed in response to his statement. “please, as if that would ever happen.”
“ah you’re right. you look like your mom told you that bumjoong is the favorite child.”
“is there a point to your escapades or do you just enjoy annoying me?”
a look of fake hurt flashed across wooyo’s face in response, “ouch. you must really be missing your pretty girlfriend to talk to your best friend like that joongie.”
hongjoong spun towards wooyoung and gave him, yet another, death glare. “keep your voice down are you insane ? listen, we have a job to do, get focused on that.” and with that he stormed back to his place on stage. just take a few breaths and it’ll be fine… no reason for you to snap on your members.
“places guys; 10 seconds!”
he didn’t think it was possible, but that 10 seconds was both the longest and shortest time of hongjoong’s career. he knew you were in the crowd, he knew he had to do his best just for you. but what he wasn’t expecting when he scanned the crowd was to make direct eye contact with you and your friend in the front row.
oh he was soooo fucked.
so fucked that hwa had to elongate his intro and improvise an extra end part to get joong to snap out of his daze.
“ah i’m sorry, i got caught up looking at all of our beautiful atiny! hi guys, my name is kim hongjoong, captain of ateez!!”
the crowd seemed to take it well, i mean his job was fan service. but in truth, he was lying, he was only looking at you. and to his surprise, you were looking back; in fact he could feel your eyes on him frequently, and anytime he didn’t it was just because you and your friend were laughing together.
hongjoong kept finding himself on your side of the stage, often sending you flirty glances and winks during his verses; and god you were eating it up. not to mention how obsessed he was with getting you to smile. unfortunately for him though, he had to give that same energy to everyone for his actions to not be so obvious. even more unfortunately for him, san and wooyoung were on his ass the entire time, which caused seonghwa to send suspicious glances joong’s way. fuck.
hwa approached joong halfway through the show, once they were offstage during yunho and mingi’s unit performance. “fess up, why are you clinging to one side of the stage and why do you keep zoning out?? it’s not a good look and it’s making us look unorganized on stage.“
hongjoong just toyed with the hem of his sleeve in silence. to be honest he was trying to focus but he was drunk on the thought of being able to make you smile. there wasn’t anything he could say to get hwa off of his back, so he opted for a shrug.
“are you not feeling ok? you should’ve said something beforehand joong-“
“i’m fine.” please just drop it…
“fine.” hwa started, preparing his mic to get back on stage. the irritation was evident in his actions, but his voice was still soft. “but you’re the leader, just know this shit is on your shoulders if management says something.”
hongjoong just nodded in response, following seonghwa’s actions in fixing his mic. “that’s 50,000 won for calling me leader and not captain by the way.” he retorted with a smirk before running back on stage to meet the audience’s cheers.
******
“okay atiny, you guys enjoying the show?” yeosang asked, receiving a loud roar of approval from the crowd.
“i take that as a yes! but unfortunately…” jongho started his sentence, and atiny realized that the show was coming to an end. “hey hey we don’t want to leave either, but we have one more performance for you guys! are you ready??”
the rest of the guys were set up on a prop couch for the last song, each of them holding a red or white rose, as they waited for jongho to join them. once he did, the speakers started playing the instrumental of seventeen’s “ready to love” and seonghwa started off the cover, the crowd going insane.
eventually the boys got to the ending and handed out (or really threw) their roses to people in the crowd. and to no one’s surprise, hongjoong sat on the edge of the stage and handed his white rose to you, his fingers gliding over yours during the hand off, causing a goofy smile to take over your face with a light pink blush. kaylani teased you after making sure to get the entire interaction on video, you simply rolling your eyes and covering the camera in response. joong winked before getting up to join the members for their final bow and go back to their green room.
“thank you atiny!! we’ll be back soon” san yelled as the curtains closed and yunho and mingi peaked out to wave one last time.
******
hongjoong was the first one back in the room, his mind filled with your smile and whether or not you texted him. he loosened his tie and jogged over to the couch where he left his phone, anxious but also eager. but when he heard the members following close behind, joong grabbed his phone and rushed to the bathroom; mostly to avoid being teased by wooyoung, reprimanded by seonghwa, and shamed by san.
“you ok captain?” mingi asked from the other side of the door. “you left kinda in a hurry..”
“y-yea i’m fine, drank a lot of water earlier.”
mingi just shrugged it off with a low “okay” and went back to the other members, hongjoong letting out a small breath that he didn’t realize he was holding. he clicked his phone on and surprisingly saw a kakao notification from an unsaved contact. hongjoong’s face lit up brighter than his phone screen as he opened the app to reply.
but wait. was it you or a stalker?
did someone else possibly see the paper he gave you?
was he overthinking? yes. but most of it seemed logical.
joong sighed before he reread your message.
?: hey
?: it’s the girl from the fanmeet
still he had to confirm it was you.. and he had a pretty decent idea of how to do it.
joongie: really? then say something i said to you earlier
joong figured you would take a while to write back but you actually replied right away.
?: “really pretty name for a really pretty person”
joongie: i’m glad you texted me y/n :)
he just smiled at his phone, thinking of what to text you next. should he ask to facetime you maybe? should he flirt or was it too early for that? joong’s mind had a million tabs open at once but he really wanted to live in the current moment-
until wooyoung decided to be obnoxious and bang on the bathroom door like the police.
“hey some of us actually have to pee ya know!”
open tab number one million and one, strangle jung wooyoung…

-------
I’ve aged a decade in the time it takes to get inside the Imperial Palace. The blistering heat makes sweat bead down the back of my dress, every inch of heavy fabric feeling like it’s plastered to my skin. Everything feels too heavy on my body. I need to get home and into the tub, maybe with enough soap and water I will be able to purge the oppressive weight that clings to my skin.
Though I have my doubts. It’s not just the heat or the dirt, it’s this whole place. Everything I have known and loved about the city feels like it has been stripped down to nothing but the oozing, wretched thing that has been hidden beneath golden arches and layers of stark white marble. It reeks of a decay that has nothing to the crucified bodies hanging outside our doors.
Senators and Commanders mingle, wives dripping in expensive jewels hanging from their arms, laughing and talking about how magnificent this celebration for Amarantha is. I’d be shaking with the rage I feel clawing up my insides were it not for the way Rhysand still held me in his mental grip.
“Steady,” he warns for what feels like the fiftieth time today. I don’t know how he’s managed to stay so calm, especially when his men have been taken through the back streets of the city. There is a prison on the outskirts of the capitol, on the eastern wall, hopefully there will be less cruelty on the streets now that they’re away from the parade, but it is still a fate I wouldn’t wish on anyone. It cannot be easy to be forced to stay here, with the enemy at every turn, while your men labor in a dungeon, yet he and Cassian, stand with their heads high behind me.
One of the guards untethered them from the back of my horse, but holding their chain in my hands is just as bad as leading them on horseback. Cassian gives me a wide berth, far enough away that if I take two steps ahead I’ll drag him by the throat. Azriel, however, hovers near my left shoulder, head down like he’s trying to hide, even as I watch his shadows slither down the back of his legs and scatter across the floor in search of something. One still remains coiled around my ear, hidden by my hair.
“Be careful around the twins,” I warn as my cousin catches my eye and makes her way towards us. She’d been too far behind us in the procession for me to see her reaction to the horrors, but, judging by the grin on her usually stoic face, I’d say she enjoyed it.
Rhysand shifts so he’s standing behind my right shoulder, so I’m framed on either side by a towering Illyrian. Their presence is soothing, especially when Brannagh’s grin could peel paint. She obviously wants trouble. I’d be a fool to think the bloodshed outside was enough. She’ll need something to sink her fangs into before the night is over to be satisfied with the day.
“There you are, cousin!” We have the same slate colored eyes and that is where the family resemblance stops. Everything about her is rigid and uniform and for so long being near her had made me feel like a lamb being watched by a lion. Yet, with the males at my back, I don’t feel so small anymore.
“I’m surprised you made it,” she says, eyes raking over Rhysand, then Azriel, then Cassian, sizing each of them up to see which would be an easier meal.
I’m suddenly overwhelmed with the desire to punch in her teeth.
“First the Games, now this,” Dagdan says as he abandons an attempt to woo one of the Senators with his bullshit war stories, and joins us. “Maybe we are related after all.”
Rhysand withdraws his mental presence from my head and I draw my mental shields back up to make sure I keep the twins out.
Brannagh walks a slow circle around us, tongue running over her lower lip. “I really didn’t think you were capable of this.” Her bony fingers reach out to flick the chain looped around their throats. “It’s a little… what’s the word you always throw at us? Barbaric for you?”
“All it took was Mommy Dearest to lose her head for you to grow a spine, huh?” Dagdan sneers.
Azriel’s shadow hisses angrily in my ear as his head jerks up off his chest. The glare he throws over my shoulder could melt a glacier, the heat in it seering across my skin.
“This one’s pretty,” Brannagh coos at him, her fingers reaching out to brush across his cheek.
“Don’t touch him,” I bite out through my teeth.
“Careful, we bite,” Cassian snarls.
This only makes Brannagh grin further and my first instinct is to draw all three of them behind my back, as if they were small children in need of protection and not three fully grown warriors. As if I had not seen them kill a Giant and a handful of Wargs in the Arena just yesterday.
“Were they fun?” Brannagh teases, making another circle so she can draw her nails over Rhysand’s nearly bare chest.
Red tints my vision.
“They look like they’d be a good fuck.”
I clench my hands into fists to keep my power from erupting and taking out everything in the room. Rhysand can’t save me from this one, not without them sensing his mental presence. And if we are to play this game, I need to be able to stand on my own two feet. I might not be the most skilled fighter in this room, but I have plenty of other weapons in my arsenal.
“How would you know? The only thing you’ve ever fucked is Dagdan.”
She flinches like I’d punched her right in the stomach. It was all rumors of course, but the whispers were there. The twins still insisted on sharing a room; still went everywhere together. They were toxically co-dependant and on more than one occasion they’d mentioned old practices of keeping bloodlines pure. I knew it was a sore spot, I didn’t care very much if it was true. As long as the blow landed; as long as I had something strong enough to cut her, so the bond screaming in my ears didn’t prompt me to cut off the hand still lingering too close to my mate’s skin. They were not hers to touch.
Cassian chokes out a cough, trying to keep back a laugh as Brannagh’s face twists.
Dagdan’s teeth flash in a snarl.
I merely grin as I give the chain in my hands a very subtle tug. “I think we’re done catching up, cousin. Do enjoy the rest of the celebration.” I do my best to leave them in the dirt as we head deeper into the palace. I’m sure she’ll find a way to make me pay for the remark later, but for now, I’ll count it as a victory.
The exchange took place in the open foyer, the roof held up by pillars and the outside world only separated by billowing sheer curtains. I mount the steps that lead us into a secondary foyer, where bubbling fountains and a pool of multicolored fish take up much of the space. Standing guard atop the fountains are twin statues of our gods of war and victory; the golden bowls at their feet overflowing with coins left by worshipers as they come and go from the Palace. We need more than a little luck and victory on our side and I leave a handful of coins on Victory’s altar. I will go to the Temple later and beg the Mother for forgiveness for how blind I have been, and seek a Priestess to make an offering for her blessing in what is quickly becoming an act of outright treason.
I feel Rhysand’s violet gaze on me as I make the offering.
“The twins really are… like that?” Cassian asks as we round the fountain. It has to be morbid curiosity that prompts the conversation, but the fact that he’s speaking to me at all makes my heart race in my chest. I’ll take whatever scraps he’ll throw my way, if it only means he doesn’t hate me as much as he did yesterday.
“I’d be more surprised if they weren’t than if they were,” I say, unable to suppress a shutter when thinking about it. “They’ve always been… together… and weird about it.”
“Sure, and we’re the animals.”
I can see the back of Amarantha’s blood red head as the inner circle makes its way towards the atrium for food and whatever entertainment could be dragged into this den of vipers for the afternoon. Servants carrying goblets of wine drift through the clusters of visiting dignitaries and soldiers. There’s more than a couple armored gladiators, acting as guards for their sponsors, in attendance. I try to keep track of who belongs to who as we go, in order to give us an edge for the next match. Senators Beron and Tamlin, former lords from Prythians courts, now given new titles within the Empire for merging their kingdoms, both have sponsors shadowing them. The males have to be half Giant, with arms and thighs thick as tree trunks. Their armor has to be custom made to be able to fit them. I don’t know the names of either males, only that they’ve been employed long enough for their conditions in the Arena are they don’t fight Amarantha’s Attor. Too much money has been put into them to let them get torn to ribbons by that beast.
I slide my way through the throngs of people to get closer. To play this game, there is no doubt that they will have to go back into the Arena a couple times. I need to start finding ways to give them an edge. I can start by seeing up close just how much taller they are then Cassian. If they have to go hand-to-hand in the future, I want to see how they compare next to each other so I can plan to get around it.
The gladiators have at least two feet on Cassian, which makes me basically an ant in comparison. I already have to tilt my head up to look my mates’ in the eye, these males make me have to keep distance between us to be able to see anything other than they’re stomachs.
Cassian is fairly nimble, from what I’ve seen so far, as long as the wound on his leg is healed by the next match, he can use that to his advantage. But the thought of having to watch him fight males this size makes my stomach twist. I’m going to need to do more than size up the competition.
Beron is accompanied, as always, by several of his sons, but it is always Eris by his side. The well dressed male turns a grin in my direction when he catches sight of me. “Highness,” the bow is graceful, fox-like in a way that reminds me of Lucien, wherever he is in the crowd to avoid his Father. It’s not like him to leave Tamlin alone in these situations, they’re usually joined at the hip.
“It does me good to see you outside,” Eris continues, as he reaches out to take my hand and press a chaste kiss on the back of my knuckles.
Azriel’s shadow hisses in agitation in my ear as something hot flickers down the bond.
“It’s been too long since you’ve graced us with your presence.” I’ve known the Vanserra’s for a long time, Eris is not quite the flirt Lucien is, but he has no shortage of sway over females, males too for that matter. It had always surprised me that Father hadn’t tried to arrange a union between us. Eris was known, from time to time, to share the same savage brutality the Emperor valued in his court; it should have pleased him to have Eris for a son in law.
“Are you finally feeling better?”
“It took longer than I expected to recover,” I say honestly. Better to not oversell anything; all lies have a little truth woven in. “But getting some air has been good.”
His russet gaze jumps to the males behind me, and the grin I’ve known for decades turns serpentine. “And profitable, I’d imagine?”
“For the Empire, of course, all earnings will go to aid the far reaches.”
“So I heard,” he nods, still studying them. “You always did have a bleeding heart, Highness. It is good to see it benefit you.”
The compliment feels underhanded, but so do most things around here.
“When will we get to see them in action again?”
Talking about them like they’re not standing here makes me want to start smashing things, but I reign in my temper. “I was just about to ask you the same about your Father’s gladiators.”
He glances back at the male and shrugs. “Felix is always ready, but we’ve gotten no summons.”
Interesting. The Gamesmaker should already have a match-up in place, even if the Arena will be closed for repairs for a few days still.
“How unfortunate, it’d be quite the fight for Cassian.”
I feel Cassian shift a little closer, the scent of sandalwood and snow-capped mountains invading my senses. It is an effort not to step back and lean into him, he’s never dared be this close before.
“It would be quick,” he states.
Eris huffs a laugh. “For your neck to be broken, brute? Yes, we’d be in agreement.”
There’s a snap as Cassian’s wings ruffle and whip closed again, his agitation so clear I can taste it. The frayed edges of our bond simmer, but I can’t tell if the rage is his or my own. We are alike in that aspect.
“Who was summoned, then?” We can’t linger too long here, especially not for information I do not yet need. Rhysand still needs to get a better look around and we’re starting to linger on the stairs, people clustering behind us.
“Not Tamlin’s man either,” Eris says with a shrug. “I’m as in the dark as you.”
“You?” I force a teasing smirk to my features. “I thought you knew everything around here, Eris?”
His russet gaze darkens as his perfect teeth dart out to bite his lower lip. It’s a move I’ve seen thousands of people swoon over. “I’ll happily find out for you, Highness.”
Azriel’s shadow snarls in a language I can’t make out, but it is Rhysand’s side of the bond that ripples with promised violence. Is that jealousy I feel? I try to shove the thought aside; hoping that they feel this thing between us is too much to ask for. I will only hurt myself if I start to hope that I am more than a means to an end.
“Please do. I’d be indebted to you.” That’s all it takes for the Autumn male to bow and disappear into the crowd.
Senator Thessian and his large entourage of guards pushes past us on the stairs, the armored guard slamming into Rhysand from behind hard enough that he stumbles forward, hands reaching out to catch himself on my hips before he can take both of us to the floor. My whole body freezes under the contact, the warm press of his body against mine enough to make all rational thought fly out of my skull.
He leans in, like he might offer an apology, breath ghosting over my neck as his lips brush the shell of my ear. My whole body shivers in anticipation. “Clever, little vixen.”
The low baritone of his voice makes heat rush between my legs, something hot coiling in the pit of my stomach. Now the citrus and jasmine scent of him invades all my senses and I really, truly have no thoughts left in my head.
My knees wobble as he gives my hip a squeeze, even as the bond roars at the loss of contact as he steps back. Maybe it’s just been awhile since I’ve been intimate with anyone, but that small amount of contact feels like an electric current beneath my skin. It is an effort to keep moving up the stairs and not turn and do something foolish, like press my lips to his and slide my fingers into his hair.
The atrium is a wide, open room with tables piled with food lining the far walls. On the left are floor to ceiling windows, thrown open to let in the warm summer breeze, a few Praetorians standing at attention amidst the billowing curtains.. There are low couches along the walls, some of which are already taken. If not by anyone with a gladiator, I don’t linger on who sits where.
A servant with a tray of wine passes and I snag one to try and calm the sizzling beneath my skin. I didn’t realize one of today’s many battles would be trying not to throw myself at my mates.
There is a raised dais against the far wall, the couches and lounge chairs far more plush and ornate than the rest. Father has found his seat, a slightly less gaudy throne than usual, and reclines as a servant fans him with a palm frond. Amarantha has taken her usual seat on his right, reclining against one of her pleasure slaves. The male wears little but a strip of crimson fabric between his legs, every inch of bare skin lean and smooth. There’s another perched on the armrest of her chair, holding a goblet of wine for whenever she needs it; a third sitting at her feet, running idle fingers up the side of her calf. All that attention, and yet her dark gaze still tracks the males behind me with enough hunger I debate how much trouble I’d be in if I threw my own wine glass at her head.
She is not the only one who pays such close attention to the Illyrians. A couple dignitaries’ wives and high ranking soldiers gawk blatantly at how much skin they have on display. More than one head turns to get a better look at Rhysand’s ass in this get-up.  He neither cowers or preens under the attention; it’s like he doesn’t even register it. I can’t help but wonder if that was the point: Everybody is so busy ogling him, they’re not really paying attention to what he’s doing. It’s a good mask, it shields his intentions and lets him observe without it being obvious, but the way they look at him, like he’s a piece of meat makes me wish I had claws to scratch out their eyes.
I take another sip of wine, trying not to look too desperate for the emptiness it’ll bring as I head in the direction of the dais.
“You’ve surprised me,” Father says as we approach. It’s the first real acknowledgement he’s shown me all day.
The shadow curled around my ear burrows a little deeper under my hair to avoid detection, the soft ether brushing against a sensitive spot on my temple that has me gripping the wine glass a little tighter to keep from reacting.
“As I said, I am trying to do better, Father.”
His gaze flicks to the chain in my hand, down the length of it like he’s inspecting the strength of each wrung before finally arriving on the occupants tethered to it. He grins in triumph as he takes in their attire. Maybe they were right to ignore what I’d brought out. It certainly looks like I’ve intended to humiliate them by dressing them in the same attire many of the Senator’s slaves are sporting.
“Tell me how you managed to bring the three of them to heel when Amarantha couldn’t?”
Amarantha bristles in her seat, her perfect teeth flashing in her pale face.
Another small victory.
“Tell him you instructed the healer to give us a sleeping drought in our wine.” The twins haven’t reappeared and his sudden return in my head nearly makes me jump out of my skin. “And faebane in the water this morning.”
I repeat his instructions as I move to take the seat that is mine on his left and force myself not to think about how it’s a couch instead of a chair like his because it used to be shared with my Mother.
“You’re hoping to acquire mirthroot in the city to keep us docile until the next match.”
I repeat that too, making a mental note to ensure that I follow through with it. He will monitor my every move in the city, if I don’t follow through, he’ll know it and then we’re dead. An issue that seems far less pressing when Rhysand’s hand brushes over my wrist. Watching him in the Arena did nothing to show just how agile he is, not when he expertly maneuvers my hand towards his chest, the chain blocking his part in this. The next thing I know, I’m moving to sit and he’s falling into the couch behind me so it looks like I pushed him down into the seat so I could recline against his chest. The motion takes him seconds, it looks like he rehearsed it down to the exact placement of the chain to hide the fact that he’d been the one moving me and not the other way around.
Azriel seats himself on the armrest wordlessly; Cassian grunting as he sits on the floor with his back against the couch. I get the distinct impression he is only keeping his shoulder against my knee because being any farther away would mean his wings were in reach of Father’s hands.
It takes me a minute to find my bearings again as my brain short circuits over how close they all are. Rhysand’s heartbeat is steady against my back, his skin warm even through the fabric of my dress. He lets his head lean back against the back of the couch, feigning exhaustion or maybe repulsion from being “forced” to be this close to me. I’m close enough that I could run my hand up Azriel’s thigh if I wanted, and damn me do I want to. Or close enough to Cassian that my fingers itch to brush through the thick strands of his hair. It is a cruel trick of fate that my mates are close enough for me to touch and I can’t.
At the mention of the mirthroot, one of Amarantha’s males leans around the Emperor to offer a rolled cigarette, even dried the hint of mirthroot is obvious. The male’s eyes are glassy, shining under the effects of it himself, the grin on his features lazy and unbothered. Far too soft a male to be shackled to Amarantha.
I tap Cassian on the shoulder to prompt him to take it. A mistake because he flinches like I hit him and I think I might have undone any effort I’d made to get him to at least tolerate my presence. He snatches the offered cigarette, and the liter that follows and passes it back to me with a huff.
The Emperor watches the exchange with more interest than he’s ever shown me in my life. “What would you have done, Amarantha?” He asks.
“The same,” she says through her teeth.
I take a deep breath through my nose to keep from making a disgusted face at her. “Ember said that’s what she used to do for Amarantha’s slaves before she came to my keep, so I simply took a page out of her book.”
I pass the cigarette and liter to Azriel, and pray the sight of the flames doesn’t cause the same reaction it had when he’d been branded. He grits his teeth, but there is no angered flash down the bond or hiss from the shadow to indicate it’s anything other than a show as he lights it and takes a long drag.
“I’m glad to see that in your seclusion you’ve finally grown half a brain,” Father says. “I was beginning to worry that your Mother’s poisoned tongue had gotten to you.”
I flinch despite myself and all three of the males tense around me. Cassian’s jaw ticks, the flutter of movement brushing across my knee. For the first time all day, his hazel gaze flicks to me, and  maybe it’s a trick of the light, but I swear I see a flash of pity there.
“No, it didn’t,” I whisper, unable to put any feeling into the words. I haven’t been back here since the execution. I’d found every reason to avoid it. Being back feels like peeling a scab off the wound and letting it bleed all over the floor.
Azriel takes another drag and I wish more than anything to take a hit of it myself and numb this feeling in my chest. What I would give for the empty numbness that had filled me in the early months of my grief. There are so many tangled emotions here, between the loss and my mates and the horrors of what we just witnessed outside. I cannot pick just one to focus on; can’t find some outlet to expel the building pressure. It all tangles and lodges itself in my throat like it's trying to drown me.
Rhysand’s fingers brush over my arm as he draws his hand up to take the cigarette from Azriel. To an onlooker it looks accidental, maybe it is, maybe I’m just reading into it, but even that faint brush drags me back to the surface for a bit of air again. At least I am not alone in the water anymore. Mother had always been emotionless, nothing got to her. I was always the one that felt too much. At least now the emotions can be shared.
“Your actions yesterday inspired me,” the Emperor says after a beat.
Apprehension licks its way up my spine.
“I haven’t taken a champion of my own in a long time. It’s become dull, betting on someone else’s man.”
Shit!
Azriel’s shadow dares to peek out around my bangs, observing the crowd as they begin to settle in their seats with plates of food, as if on some silent command. Brannagh and Dagdan join us on my left, on the seat closest to the dais, the stare they level at me hot enough to melt glass. So much for Rhysand being in my head the rest of the evening.
With a wave, the Emperor motions over a creature I have no name for. It walks on two legs like a man, but is covered head to toe in thick, brown, fur. Horns curl from the top of its head; a beak with a hooked tip jutting from its face. Its hands end in talons like that of a bird, but there are five on each hand instead of three. Its tunic has been folded down around its waist, leaving its chest bare, revealing a spider web of scars gouged through the heavy layer of fur. A thin, whip-like tail ending in a spiked tip flicks back and forth behind it as it walks, each step sending a shutter through the Palace.
My skin pricks with goosebumps. Some strange sort of alchemy made this thing.
“I was hoping to test it in the Arena, but with the repairs in order, I thought a smaller show would do just as well.”
My stomach hurdles into my throat.
“Why don’t we pick one of your champions to break it in, daughter?” The Emperor suggests as if this is a thought that just came to him and not something he’s been planning from the beginning.
I take another sip of wine as I turn to look at him, trying to steady the rapid pounding of my heart. I can’t let one of them fight this thing! Its maw opens and snaps shut with a clack as it stands before us, growing impatient.
“I’d personally like to see Cassian’s thick skull get crushed like a watermelon,” Amarantha chimes in from her seat.
I’m really going to throw up right here in front of all these people.
“A splendid idea from our woman of the hour, don’t you think?” He grins like he’s caught me, like he knows I’ve been playing games and have walked right into his trap.
“Nothing can be as bad as listening to you speak, Amarantha,” Cassian snarls as he gets on his feet, effectively making the decision for me.
He cracks his neck and rolls his shoulders, wings ruffling behind him, but before he can step into the center of the room, he turns to face me, much to my surprise. Hands scarred from swordplay reach out to give the chain around his neck a little tug. “Mind letting me off the leash, Princess?”
One of the Praetorian steps forward to unchain him but I stand and snag the key from his hand instead. I’ve seen enough males get stabbed or injected with something right before a fight to give the opponent an upper hand to know I can’t trust anyone near him. And, maybe, just maybe, the act of giving him a little relief from the chain might make him not hate me so much.
My hands shake as I reach up to his neck to unclasp the chain. I know better than to take the whole collar off while there are so many people watching even if I wish I could. His breath is warm on my face as he watches me, waiting for his moment of freedom. The urge to stretch up on my toes and kiss him for luck is overwhelming; maybe in another life we could have.
I step back with the chain in my hand and return to my seat before I can follow my impulses.
Cassian turns to face his opponent and even though I saw him perform yesterday, I can’t shake the sinking feeling that I have just sent him to his death. The creature sizes him up like it's calculating the best spot to take a bite out of him and its beady eyes settle on the bandage tied around his bare thigh.
Rhysand leans forward, resting his chin on my shoulder to watch, arm loosely looped over my waist. It looks casual. No one bats an eye at the gesture, but I am pretty sure he’s done it so he can keep me from jumping off the couch.
Azriel leans forward, bracing himself with his knees on his elbows, hazel gaze tracking the steps of Cassian’s opponent as he also calculates its weak spots.
“Let’s make it interesting, shall we?” The Emperor asks, leaning over to be heard over the rush of excitement the audience gives to the challengers.
I tear my gaze away from where I’m trying to memorize every line in Cassian’s wings, every curve of tattoo over his back and shoulders, just in case. “How so?”
“Cassian wins and I’ll let you pick their next opponent in the arena,” he suggests.
I like the offer; it gives them a better chance at surviving.
“Cassian loses, and you give Rhysand to Amarantha.”
The world flips and spins and the roaring in my ears has me clutching my hands in my skirts to keep a surge of power from destroying the room. My power singes the fabric, only the smoke from the mirthroot hides the smell.
There is no way in Hel I am making that kind of bet!
Rhysand stiffens behind me, heartbeat skipping for half a moment before he pretends to be unbothered by the comment and takes another drag of the mirthroot.
I’d rather throw myself on a blade than chance that. Cassian is an exceptional fighter, but I cannot take that risk. I am already risking his life by letting him fight like this, how can I risk both of them?
My chest aches. There are too many opportunities to lose them. Too many things that can go wrong.
“And let our people think I am weak and incapable of following through on the deal we made yesterday?” I challenge. My voice trembles as I fight to hold his gaze steady.
Azriel’s shadow hisses what sounds like a warning in my ear.
“You know if we split them up now it makes me look as if I can’t handle them.”
“Attached, are we?”
“No, but I am tired of looking weak,” I hiss. “If Amarantha wants them, she can challenge me for them herself.”
Rhysand stiffens behind me. The twins are too close for him to slip into my mind again, but I can practically feel him shouting at me down the bond.
She huffs a laugh around the other side of him, “As if you’d stand a chance in that!”
I ignore her as I hold my ground with my Father, “You have always thought so little of me.”
He doesn’t deny it.
“So if you really want to make this interesting, then fine. If Cassian wins, I pick when and who all their matches are with. And if he loses, well, you’ve already chosen a husband for me I’m sure, so you can speed up the process and I’ll provide them the heir you so desperately want by the end of the year.”
The bond shakes so hard in my chest it feels like Azriel’s screaming in my ear. Rhysand has gone still as death behind me and I didn’t think I said it that loud, but Cassian’s head whips in our direction, eyes wide.
Father throws his head back and laughs at that. “This new found confidence is amusing. I will allow you to pick the next two fights, but not all.”
Better than nothing.
“Deal.”
I think I can hear Azriel’s teeth grinding together beside me, so I force myself not to look at him. The bond thrums like he’s in physical pain and I hate that I have caused it, but I will not barter with their lives.
“To first blood!” The Emperor calls to the room.
“To the death!” Brannagh chants instead.
When this whole Empire goes up in flames, I’m pushing her in first.
The crowd begins to murmur to themselves, debating. “I’ll put some money on it if they fight to the death,” Tamlin tosses out.
“As will I!” Shouts a commander whose name I’d never learned.
The motion goes around the room in a full circle, by the time the Emperor concedes, I’ve drank my full glass and abandoned it on the couch. Didn’t we just do this?
The Praetorians provide blades for the two males, but the Emperor’s creature can’t hold the blade with its claw tipped hands and tosses it to the ground with a screech. Its barbed tip tail draws back behind it as it drops into a defensive stance.
I forget how to breathe as Cassian drops into his own.
Time slows in a familiar sensation of undiluted horror as the creature moves first, striking forward with its tail like a spear. Cassian pivots back a step, rearranging his feet as he blocks with the sword.
The crowd cheers excitedly and I distantly recognize coins changing hands as they take bets, but cannot tear my eyes away enough to watch who is participating in it. Cassian remains on the defensive as the creature rears its tail back and attacks from the other side of its body this time, testing the Illyrian’s reaction time. When the strike is blocked a second time, it switches tactics and goes for a punch, talons extended towards Cassian’s face.
While the creature is taller, it is not as agile, and Cassian side steps out of the way of the blow, using the momentum to lunge into the next step and strike the tip of his sword across his opponent’s stomach. Its ear shattering screech shakes the room as the blade makes contact, drawing black blood. If it wasn’t for Brannagh, the challenge would be over, Cassian would have won. It would have been easy for once.
Enraged, the creature strikes with its talons again, missing a second time, but catching Cassian in the jaw on the backswing. The whole room can hear Cassian’s teeth clack together as he stumbles backwards.
It takes everything in me not to squeeze my eyes shut, not to wince and react to every blow. I have to keep telling myself that this is part of the game and I cannot give them away, but by the Mother it is harder and harder with every passing second!
Rhysand remains with his chin propped up on my shoulder, the bulk of his weight keeping me in my seat. I so desperately want to reach out and take his hand, give myself something to ground in, but I can’t. I have to accept that this might be all we’re ever allowed to touch, especially after today.
The creature strikes again with its tail, once, twice, a third, each like a punch. The third blow shatters Cassian’s sword into pieces and my heart plummets into my stomach as he dodges a fourth assault. He’s not so fast on the fifth and that barbed tip punches right through his bandaged thigh! Blood splatters as the tips hurdles through muscle and sinew until it pushes through the back of his leg.
One of the dignitaries' wives reaches for a bucket and wretches as Cassian’s roar of pain rattles my teeth.
Azriel flinches, looking like he might just jump into the fight and stop it, but then catches himself.
The bond screams and bashes against my insides as my powers flare again, singing more of my skirts as I hold them in a death grip that only worsens as the creature yanks the barb back out of Cassian’s leg, bringing him to the floor. Blood pours from the wound from both ends, cascading down his calf to make a puddle on the stark white tile.
There’s enough of my skirts to hide the motion, Rhysand buries his hand beneath them to hold onto my hip tight enough to bruise. I don’t know if that’s to keep me in place or himself.
The creature snarls out a noise that sounds like triumph as it pulls its hand back, aiming to use its claws to sever Cassian’s head.
Not again! Not again! Not again!
I have to stop this! I have to do something!
At the last second, Cassian throws himself out of the way, knees tucked to his chest as he rolls out of reach, right to where the creature’s discarded sword lies. He snags the blade with a grunt, one hand pressed to the gaping wound in his thigh as he pushes himself back onto his feet. His face twists in pain at the slightest movement, but he manages to stay upright.
Rhysand breathes a little easier behind me, but his grip on my hip hasn’t let up.
The Emperor frowns beside us, displeased with the outcome thus far no doubt. He really expected this to be easy.
The creature strikes again, sticking to what it has found successful, and it becomes a mistake. Cassian twists at the last second, blade raised so when the strike comes, he doesn’t need to block it. At this angle, not only does it miss him, he has a height advantage and he brings the sword down as hard as he can, cleaving the tail in half. The barbed tip hits the floor twitching as the creature reels backward and wails.
Holy shit! I’ve seen a lot of warriors in my life, but I don’t think I’d ever describe them as beautiful until now. Each move is calculated, backed with training and muscle. His tattoos seem to come to life with his body as his muscles shift and strike.
He doesn’t let up as his opponent stumbles back either, he uses the distraction to his advantage and plunges the sword into the creature’s shoulder. He might have been aiming for the heart, but the wound in his leg gives him too great a limp to lunge far on. The blade catches in bone, the resounding crunch deafening in the domed ceiling, and when he reels back to pull it out, he twists it just enough to make his opponent’s arm absolutely useless.
With two of its preferred methods of fighting gone, the creature bends at the waist and charges with a roar, hoping to use its horns like a battering ram into Cassian’s chest.
An otherwise horrifying sight, if Cassian didn’t laugh and step dramatically out of the way so the creature rams right into the wall. “Is that really all you’ve got?” He taunts as a rain of dust falls on his head.
The creature screeches as it yanks itself free from the wall and shakes its head, clearing the debris from its beady eyes.
Cassian spins the blade in his hand, adjusting his grip, and I think it might be one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen in my life.
He can’t crouch with his leg, but he doesn’t need to. The creature tries to ram him again and he dodges and brings his hilt down on its neck, knocking it to the floor. He wastes no time in rearing back with the blade and bringing it down, easily cleaving the creature’s head from its shoulders.
Amarantha throws up her hands in a huff at the sight.
I finally take what feels like my first breath in an hour as Cassian tosses the blade on the floor. He did it! He won!
Azriel removes his elbows from his knees and reclines back against the armrest, clearly satisfied with the outcome.
“Excellent! Excellent!” Praises the steward as he goes about helping anyone who placed bets collect their proper earnings.
I tear my gaze away from the carnage to the nearest guard, “Find him a healer, now.” Before he bleeds out on the floor or Father decides he has another champion he wants to test.
The Emperor takes a long drink from his goblet, eyes narrowed on the severed head the staff has to now clean off the floor. Around him, his dignitaries drink and argue over why they bet the way they did. It is business as usual, completely unbothered by the blood around them.
When he finally turns to me, I have to brace myself against the anger simmering in his eyes. This is usually the part where I put my chin to my chest and try to make myself as small as possible. Usually. But not today.
“It seems I’ve underestimated their talent for bloodshed.”
Cassian hobbles back over to us and I make a show of telling Azriel to help him before he gets blood everywhere, so no one thinks I just let them wander off on their own.
“The Games will continue at the start of next week,” the Emperor continues.
That gives us days. I try not to look at the gaping hole in Cassian’s thigh. Thank the Mother it looks like it missed bone, but how is he supposed to participate with that? There’s no way it heals in time, even if I have Ember work twelve hours a day on him.
“I expect you to have their opponent picked out by the Senate meeting in the morning. You still have that end of your bargain to uphold.”
This victory will not be without repercussions, but it is still a victory nonetheless, and we have to take what we can get.
--
Managing to procure the mirthroot I need to trick my Father into thinking I’m following through with the regime I’d given him, as well as finding horses for the Illyrians to ride back on takes longer than usual, given the massive partying happening in the streets. We have to take the backroads home to avoid being pelted with more rocks, or outright mobbed. Compared to the rest of the day, the journey is uneventful, spent mostly with the others ensuring Cassian doesn’t pass out on the horse.
The sun is already changing colors by the time we return to the River House, but I know if I try to prepare for bed now I’ll never sleep. Instead, I leave Anise with instructions to look into potentially safe opponents in the Arena, so when I see Eris again tomorrow I can compare their notes, and then set out for the Temple built on the edge of the property.
I doubt there are enough blood offerings and animal sacrifices to cleanse the sins of this Empire, but I offer as many as I can in apology for my part in it. I don’t know how I’ve been so blind to all of it. I can’t stop seeing it now, it should have always been so obvious to me.
The Priestesses do not ask why I linger for over an hour, praying long past the time it takes for my offerings to burn atop the altar. I’d hoped that, if I said them hard enough, the weight of the day would slip off my shoulders. I’d thought, with enough sacrifices, the guilt would ease, but I can still feel my mates’ agitation and pain clearly through the bond.
I return to the House as weary as before. Tomorrow will be a whole new set of problems. I cannot put it off by lingering in the Temple.
The walk doesn’t clear my head, or loosen the tension, and I climb into the tub with that same heaviness still clinging to my skin. I heat the water as hot as I can, hoping it might cleanse me in a way my sacrifices couldn’t.
Exhaustion creeps its way in as I scrub and scrub and scrub until my skin is pink. Every time I close my eyes I can see the crucified bodies, gasping for air as they slowly suffocate under the weight of their own body pinned to the wood. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that sight; I can only imagine how it would feel to know each of those males before this. The bond still swirls beneath my skin, heavy with agitation the hot water can’t touch.
I wish there was a way to take that from them, but how can I do that without calling attention to the mating bond?
I give myself a few extra minutes in the blissful heat before dragging myself out and tossing a silk robe over my waterlogged skin. My brush is on the vanity where Anise left it this morning and I have just started to brush the knots out of my hair when I hear the bedroom door open. My hand stills halfway through my hair; it is unlike Anise to not announce herself when it’s this late.
The door clicks shut again, the eerie silence that follows enough to make my heart drop into my stomach. The darkness of the room makes it hard to see beyond the candlelight that fills the bathing chamber and my hand goes instinctively into the vanity drawer, where my Mother had always kept an extra knife. The blade is cool in my fingers, the handle smooth and undamaged from never being used. The benefit of having constant guards is you usually never see the threats against you, though there are always exceptions.
There’s no footsteps on the carpet, but I can practically feel movement next to my bed.
I’m a sitting duck here among all the candlelight, but if I step into the darkness beyond I’ll be totally blind. Better to wait for something to make itself known.
I suppose there’s enough guards around, I can always start screaming for help if it comes down to it.
A heartbeat passes before something dark and snakelike comes slithering across the floor. The ether loops itself around my ankle and crawls up my thigh like a purring cat before the shadow takes its perch behind my ear.
I set the knife on the vanity with a sigh of relief as Azriel steps into the light. “You scared the shit out of me!”
His shadow caresses the back of my ear in apology, far more expressive now than it was earlier. “Sorry.”
He side steps out of the doorway, but not in my direction, which is odd until Rhysand steps out of the shadows behind him.
“How did you two get in here?”
“Found the lever on the door to your secret tunnel,” Azriel says as his eyes trace up my bare legs, brazenly taking in all the damp skin I have on display.
Heat flushes up my cheeks and I have to look away from him. The candlelight and the hour of the evening makes this feel more intimate than it should, given the way Rhysand looks like he might burst out of his skin. I certainly shouldn’t be entertaining the idea that Azriel would look at me as anything other than a means to an end. Hope is too dangerous a thing to have right now. Just because we agreed to do this, doesn’t mean they’re anxious to accept me as anything other than help. Besides, I need to remind myself that it will be even more dangerous for us than it already is if we were to acknowledge the bond.
“We were careful, no one saw us,” Azriel assures.
I should be relieved that they’re being safe about it, but the frown on Rhysand’s face makes me rethink it.
“What the hell were you thinking back there?!” He snarls.
Normally, that kind of outburst from a male would make me jump back in surprise, but at this point I’m too exhausted to move, let alone figure out what the hell he’s referring to. “I’ve had a lot of thoughts today, Rhysand, you will have to be more specific.”
The chain rattles around his neck as he steps further into the room, like it's fighting to hold back his powers. “Your bet with Hybern!”
Ah, right. That. “What of it?” Is he really still upset about that? Cassian won, nothing was lost.
Azriel winces and the shadow at my ear hisses in warning.
“What of it?” He repeats, his voice rising to an octave just shy of shrill, like he can’t believe he heard me right. “You can’t just offer yourself up like that!”
“And what was my alternative?”
“He gave you an alternative!” He seethes. “All you had to do was say yes!”
I fold my arms over my chest in irritation, but I don’t miss the way both their eyes dip to my chest at the motion. “Oh so it’s ok for you to put your body on the line, but I can’t do the same with my own? Seems a little hypocritical, if you ask me.”
“That’s different!”
“How so?”
He’s inched his way into my space step by step, until I’m very aware of the jasmine and citrus scent of him. Sometime after he returned home he’d changed into the clothes I’d had laid out for him, the swirl of ink along his chest just barely poking out around the dark collar. Even hidden, the urge to reach out with my hands and trace the swirls with my fingers remains.
“Because,” he says through his teeth. “It’s not a deal I can live with.”
“You don’t have to live with it because Cassian won anyway,” I retort, tearing my gaze away to look at Azriel. Rhysand is too close to me like this. I can barely think past the urge to touch him, let alone hold the argument like I need to. “Tell him he’s being ridiculous.”
Azriel folds his arms over his chest and frowns. “He’s not. You shouldn’t have made that deal.”
I throw my hands up and push past Rhysand, trying to give myself room to breathe. “You two are impossible!”
They follow like I’m still holding onto their leashes, footsteps somehow impossibly silent despite their size.
“You’re honestly going to stand there and tell me you’d rather I offered you up to Amarantha?”
“If it meant you were safe,” Rhysand snarls. “Yes.”
I find myself gritting my teeth, a snarl working its way up my throat. “Well that’s not a deal I could live with, Rhysand.”
Their legs are a hell of a lot longer than mine, Rhysand manages to snag my arm and turn me back around to face him before I make it more than three steps into the darkness of my chambers.
His face looks strained, eyes rimmed red. He has to be exhausted. The bond feels fragile, strained from all the emotions that have been blared down it today. “I need you to find a way to deal with it,” he says, voice verging on pleading.
I hate myself, but I can’t help but wonder what the hand holding onto my bicep would feel like travelling down the rest of my body.
“Whatever you have to tell yourself, whatever you have to do, I… We need you to find a way to live with it.”
Azriel comes to stand on the other side of him, so they’re nearly shoulder to shoulder. “If Cass had lost and you had to…” even in the dim light coming from the bathroom I can see the heaviness in his eyes.
I glance back and forth between them. “You’ve all suffered enough, I can handle myself. I knew what I was doing.”
Rhysand shakes his head, “I can bear a lot of things, but not that.”
Hope is a cruel bastard, and I’ve never learned to master it. “Why? What does it matter to you?”
He lifts the hand not holding onto my arm, fingers just barely brushing over my damp cheek and my heartbeat is suddenly very loud in my own ears. His mouth opens like he might say something, and then he clamps it shut again, debating with himself over the words.
While he can’t seem to find the words, Azriel’s scarred hand reaches out to gently grab my chin and tilt my face in his direction. “It matters,” he huffs, voice low and rich and the reverberations of it send shivers down my spine. “Because you’re our mate.”

Meet & Greet... and more? Pt. 5
Pairing: Lando Norris x reader Words: 2066 Click here for Part 4

Tumblr media
Lando stood in the lobby of the hotel checking his watch and rehearsing his lines mumbling to himself. A sleek black car parked outside was ready for their drive. Luckily he didn’t have to wait long before Y/N emerged. She looked stunning, even though she was only wearing some jeans and a semi-elegant black top but it complemented her complexion perfectly. Lando’s breath caught in his throat as he took in the sight of her. He approached with a warm, nervous smile.
“I’m sorry if I’m a bit underdressed,” she apologized with a low voice. “I didn’t expect you to ask me out, so I didn’t pack anything fancy.”
Lando’s smile widened and he shook his head gently. “You look gorgeous, Y/N. I’m just glad you agreed to going out with me.”
“Thanks,” Y/N said, her cheeks flushing slightly after hearing the compliment. “You look great too.”
Lando stepped forward to open the car door for her and she slipped into the luxurious interior of the car. He quickly got in the driver’s seat and soon they were driving through the streets heading toward their destination.
The drive was filled with a comfortable silence, interrupted only by the soft music playing on the radio. Lando kept sneaking glances at Y/N, stealing moments to admire her profile and the way the city lights danced on her face. Y/N, for her part, seemed content, occasionally turning to him with a smile that made his heart race.
The restaurant’s terrace that Lando had reserved for their table overlooked the city, offering a breathtaking panorama of the city below. “This is beautiful,” she said and admired the view.
“I’m glad you like it,” Lando said, his gaze lingering on her. “I wanted tonight to be special.”
The waiter arrived to take their drink orders and soon they talked about everything and nothing - shared memories, future dreams and light-hearted banter. Each moment seemed to draw them closer and Lando found himself more captivated by Y/N with every passing minute.
“Speaking of quirks,” Lando began at some point, leaning in slightly, “Years ago I tried to impress my team with a homemade dinner.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh really? How did that go?”
“Well,” Lando said with a mischievous glint in his eye, “I thought I’d go all out and make a fancy pasta dish with some chocolate mousse for after but I got so carried away that I accidentally used salt instead of sugar in the dessert.”
Y/N chuckled, “That sounds like a disaster. How did they react?”
“They were polite at first,” Lando said, trying to keep a straight face. “But halfway through the meal one of the guys said, ‘Well, at least we know Lando can make us laugh.’”
Y/N laughed, imagining Lando in the kitchen with a confused look on his face. “Sounds like you’re quite the chef.”
“More like an accidental comedian,” Lando replied with a wink. “But if you ever want a taste test, just let me know. I promise to stick to the recipe.”
“Deal,” Y/N said with a smile. “And I’ll bring my own sugar, just in case.”
The moment was light-hearted and endearing and Y/N couldn’t help but feel even more charmed by Lando’s playful and self-deprecating humor.
A little while later, while he was telling her about his early karting days, she took a moment to really look at Lando. She couldn’t help but think how he looked like he’d stepped out of a fairy tale. There was something almost magical about the way he carried himself. The sharp lines of his black pants served timeless elegance, while the white shirt accentuated his toned body. His hair was perfectly styled, every lock in place as if it had been sculpted by an artist.
He reminded her of a Disney prince, the comparison making her smile. He had that same kind of defined, classic appeal, a blend of charm and grace that seemed almost otherworldly and she was the lucky one to share this evening with him.
What had started as a simple Meet & Greet for the sole purpose of making her son happy, had turned into something much more. She had come to the event knowing very little about Lando, only the little bits Noah got excited about and told her but he was a toddler, so how much could he really know? But now she was fascinated by who Lando was as a person.
She was surprised at how Lando’s passion, his down-to-earth nature and his genuine kindness had drawn her in so quickly. The more they talked, the more she found herself appreciating the real person behind the public persona. She was falling for more than just the image of the driver; she was falling for the person he was, the one with a great sense of humor, love and genuine care.
Her thoughts were interrupted as Lando met her gaze and Y/N realized that this was more than just an ordinary night. It was a magical moment and Lando was indeed her very own prince charming, making the evening feel like something out of a storybook.
“I have to tell you,” Y/N began at some point, “this is actually the first date I’ve been on since before Noah was born. It’s been a while, but tonight feels... special.”
Lando looked at her with genuine surprise. “I can’t believe no one has asked you out,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief. “You’re amazing, anyone would be lucky to spend time with you.” He meant every word he said but soon noticed the change in her demeanor. “I hope I didn’t upset you.”
“Oh god, Lando no,” Y/N tried to calm him down immediately, then took a deep breath, her gaze momentarily drifting to the city. “There’s something I’d like to share with you, if that’s okay.”
Lando nodded encouragingly, sensing the gravity in her tone. “Of course. I’m here to listen.”
“Noah’s dad…” Y/N hesitated for a moment before continuing. “I already told you he left shortly after Noah was born, he was just two months old. It wasn’t easy and I’ve been doing everything I can to raise him on my own. I guess I’m just a bit unsure about opening up to someone new, especially with Noah involved.”
Lando’s heart ached as he listened to Y/N’s words. He could sense the insecurity and vulnerability in her voice and he wanted nothing more than to reassure her that he was genuinely interested and understanding.
“I can only imagine how difficult that must have been for you,” Lando said softly. “I want you to know that I respect you immensely for how you’ve handled everything and for how much you care for him. The fact that you’re willing to open up and share this with me means a lot.”
Y/N looked up at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty but there was also hope. “It’s just that I’ve been so focused on protecting Noah and making sure he’s okay. I’d hate for him to get attached to someone else who’s going to leave and disappoint him.”
“I understand that completely but I want to be clear about how I feel. From the moment I met you and Noah I felt something really special. It’s not just about being interested, I’m here because I genuinely care and want to see where this can go.”
Y/N’s gaze softened and she took a small but relieved breath while Lando gave her a reassuring smile. “I’m serious about wanting to get to know you and Noah better. I understand that trust takes time and I’m more than willing to be patient and supportive. I genuinely believe there’s something here and I’d like to explore that with both of you.”
Just then he decided to share a small but - what he hoped - meaningful gesture. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, tapping the screen to show Y/N. It showed the photo from when they first met at the Meet & Greet.
“This has been my phone background from the moment you two left that day,” Lando said, his cheeks flushing slightly. “I have been thinking about you nonstop since then.”
She looked at the photo, then back at Lando, her heart swelling and with slightly shaking hands she pulled out her own phone, showing it to the young man sitting across from her who got a perfect look at the exact same picture on her device. “Looks like great minds think alike,” she giggled softly.
Once they had finished their meal Lando led Y/N to the edge where they stood side by side taking in the stunning view. He turned to her, his eyes reflecting the city lights. “It’s incredible, isn’t it?” he said, his voice low and soft.
“It is,” Y/N replied, her gaze fixed on the horizon before meeting his eyes. “Thank you for this night, Lando. It’s been absolutely amazing.”
Lando’s eyes were locked onto Y/N’s, his gaze intense and filled with an emotion that spoke volumes. The air between them was charged with a palpable energy. Slowly, almost hesitantly, he reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from Y/N’s face, his fingers lingering on her cheek.
His eyes softened and he leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she chose. Y/N’s own heart raced as she felt the pull of his presence and slowly but surely her eyes fluttered shut. She tilted her face upward, her lips parting in anticipation.
Their lips met in a kiss that was both tender and electrifying. At first, it was a soft, lingering touch, a gentle exploration of what had been building between them. Lando’s lips were warm and reassuring against hers, his kiss a promise of all the words he hadn’t yet said.
Within seconds the kiss deepened, it became more urgent, more passionate. His hands moved to frame Y/N’s face, his fingers threading into her hair as he pulled her closer. The intensity of the kiss conveyed everything they had both been feeling but couldn’t quite put into words. Y/N responded eagerly, her hands grasping the front of his shirt, drawing him even closer. The world around them seemed to disappear, leaving only the sensation of their lips moving together.
When they finally parted, their foreheads pressed together, both of them were breathless, their hearts racing from the intensity of the moment. Y/N opened her eyes slowly, meeting Lando’s gaze with a look of pure happiness and love.
“That was…” Y/N began, her voice trembling slightly and she was unable to put the buzzing feeling in her stomach into words.
Lando smiled, his eyes shining with the same emotion and a soft smile on his features. “I’ve been wanting to do this the whole weekend.”
They stayed there for a few more moments, simply holding each other and enjoying each other’s presence until Lando gently took Y/N’s hands in his, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
“So,” he started with a grin, “when you tell Noah about our date, how do you think he’ll react? Will he be thrilled to know his mom’s got a new boyfriend or will he just want to know if I’m bringing him a toy car next time?”
Y/N laughed, her eyes lighting up with amusement. “Oh, Noah’s definitely going to have a lot of questions, he’s been very curious about everything lately. I’m sure he’ll be excited but he might also want to know if you have any cool stories to share.”
“Well,” Lando chuckled, shaking his head, “I’ll have to make sure I have some good stories ready. Maybe I’ll even bring him a little something again next time. I have to make sure he still likes me.”
“You’re already his hero, so I don’t think you will have to worry about that,” Y/N replied smiling.
Lando’s gaze saddened slightly as he added, “I’m not looking forward to you two leaving tomorrow but I’ll be there to help you get to the airport. It’ll be nice to spend a bit more time with you before you two have to go.”
“That sounds wonderful. Thank you, Lando and we will find a way to make this work.”

“I’m so excited for our break!” you exclaimed, skipping over to Alexia. The team was warming down in the gym after a training session, and you had all spent the entire day talking about your plans to go on vacation in New Zealand.
“I’m excited too. It’ll be nice to actually enjoy New Zealand, because we didn’t get much time during the World Cup,” Alexia said, walking at a steady pace on the treadmill. You leaned on the handle, nodding at her words, “I can’t wait. It looks so awesome, and my friend said it is awesome.”
“Who’s your friend?” the woman asked, looking at you with a small smile as you responded. “I met her in the park a few weeks ago — her name’s Ludo. She told me that she was born in Italy but lives in New Zealand, and apparently she’s studying here, in Barcelona. How cool is that?”
Alexia raised her eyebrows, a surprised expression on her face, “Really cool, and she’s right, New Zealand is awesome. I liked Auckland a lot. There’s a tall skyscraper in the city that lights up at night. Se ve precioso.”
“Hey, maybe next time we can go to Australia for vacation. Laia must have some friends at Arsenal that can give us some advice on where to go,” she added. Australia was another place you thought was beautiful. The beaches looked so… beach-y. They looked like the type of beaches you imagine when you hear the word ‘beach’, but Barcelona beaches weren’t too far off either in your humble beach-lover opinion.
"Are you two talking about the holidays?" It was Ingrid asking now, and she emerged from the other side of Alexia. You nodded, a smile on your face. "Yeah. I can't wait, it's literally all I've been thinking about, I'm so excited! I want to go to the beach and the city– Patri! Clau!" you yelled, beckoning to the women across the room, "We should go bungee jumping!"
Patri's face lit up. "I'll do anything that gives Ale a heart attack," she jeered, nudging Alexia gently as she stepped off the treadmill and wiped her forehead with a towel. "Cállate, tonto," Alexia laughed.
“I’m excited to try their coffee. I hope they’ve got a good coffee culture,” Ingrid said, earning a hum of agreement from Fridolina, another café enthusiast.
There were so many things to do, you couldn't keep up. When you and Irene got home, you immediately dashed to your room and flopped onto your bed with your notebook and laptop open, searching up and scribbling down a list of activities for you guys to do during your time in New Zealand. It ranged from bowling at an arcade to dining in a restaurant situated at the top of a skyscraper, so the options were endless.
Honestly, you were just happy to be going on holiday with your teammates. The destination didn’t matter.
Mateo stumbled into your room with his stuffed moose, Bombón, and climbed onto your bed, sitting politely beside you with his moose in his lap.
“Teo, me and Mami are going on holiday, so you and Bombón will be with Madre for a little bit,” you explained, earning a little nod from Mateo who pointed at your laptop screen.
“Es aquí donde vas?” he questioned, motioning to the photos on the website you had open. “Sí. Bonita, verdad?” Mateo smiled and replied with a little ‘Sí.’
“Nenita,” Irene yelled from the living room. You peered out of your bedroom as she spoke, “Can you text Fridolina and ask her how we’re booking the flight tickets?”
You nodded and retreated into your bedroom again, picking up your phone and opening iMessage.
yourname
→ @/fridolinarolfo how are we booking the tickets frido??
fridolinarolfo
→ 😅😅
patri8guijarro
→ Let’s take the Barça plane 🤣🤣
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ↳ It’s there for a reason lol
claudiaapina
→ Barça plane or I’m not going 💯
fridolinarolfo
→ 🤦‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ↳ I’ll ask Jona then
“Irene, Frido’s gonna ask Jona if we can take the big plane!” you said. She didn’t respond for a minute, but then she appeared at your bedroom door. “The Barça plane? The one with our faces on the side?”
You nodded once more, and Irene let out a laugh as she shook her head. “Claudia’s idea, or Patri’s?” she asked. “Patri’s, but Claudia did say that she’s not going if we don’t take that plane,” you giggled, showing her the texts on your phone. Two tiny hands grabbed ahold of you as Mateo braced on your arm and took a peek at your phone screen.
The next day, Alexia picked you up to take you to training while Irene dropped Mateo off at preschool. It was one of the last training days before the season ended, so there were some bittersweet feelings surrounding the next few days.
"I love being at work and I'm a bit sad because this season has been so good, a holiday only means it's finished,” Aitana said while you two sat down and used the foam rollers beneath your legs, “But pequeñita, the last time I went to New Zealand, all I wanted to do was win the World Cup, so I didn't do anything around the city because we weren't there for a holiday. Now that we have won it, I want to do as much as we can!”
Fridolina burst through the doors of the gym with a big smile on her face, her gym bag slung over her shoulder. “I just asked Jona about taking the Barça plane and…”
Everyone looked at her eagerly, waiting for the verdict.
“It’s a yes... but we have to pay for our own tickets since it isn’t for work.”
Claudia was the first to jump up and celebrate, followed by Patri and then everyone else. The tickets part didn’t matter, because you all got to sit together anyways.
“We’re going to New Zealand!”
After your training session, you all sat in a circle to do some stretches. The stretches part happened for maybe a minute, before you pulled a folded piece of paper out of your pocket and laid it out flat on the grass in front of you all. "I wrote down a bunch of things we can do in New Zealand. There's something for everyone, so don't worry about missing out on any cafés, Ingrid," you jeered.
Patri grabbed the paper and scanned it, a smile quickly appearing on her face. She passed it down to Claudia, and the paper made its way around the circle before ending up in the middle again.
"I want to have dinner at the skyscraper restaurant," Alexia said, her eyes lighting up as she spoke about it. A few people hummed in agreement, including you.
Claudia scoffed and shook her head, "The first thing we're doing is going to the theme park. Look forward to dinner at dinnertime!"
"You look forward to dinner at breakfast time."
"Okay, shut up Mapi."
"What about the trampoline park? You guys are totally ignoring the trampoline park!" Patri exclaimed, flailing her hands in the air. Alexia laughed and leaned back on her arms, "Yeah, because a group of grown women are allowed to be in a trampoline park with little kids. We'll crush them!"
"Not if we rent the whole place out," Patri winked, making Alexia raise her eyebrow. "Imagine that! A trampoline park, all to ourselves."
Alexia shook her head, laughing once more, "That wouldn't be too bad. At least you three could be clowns and not hurt anyone's kid," she remarked, motioning to you, Patri, and Pina, all of which made faces at her.
"It would be way cooler to hire the theme park for the night. No lines, unlimited turns, and we wouldn't need to wait forever for food," Claudia responded.
"We should go to the beach!" Ingrid chimed, pointing at the sheet of paper. That was something everyone could agree on; a nice day at the beach, soaking up the sun. There was nothing quite like the Barcelona sun, but you could at least see if the New Zealand sun came close to comparing.
“(Y/N), come on!” Alexia yelled from the living room, rolling her suitcase along the floor. You groaned, currently in the middle of trying to zip your own luggage up. “I’m almost done!”
You sat on top of your suitcase, desperately trying to push it down, and eventually, you finally managed. With a sigh of relief, you quickly zipped it up with one hand while the other kept pushing it. Alexia appeared at your door, sticking her head through the gap, “Have you got it, Chiquita?” You nodded, heaving the suitcase off your bed and onto the floor with a thud as you smiled proudly. “All done!”
"I logged into Hay Day for you, because I knew you'd be busy and forget," Alexia added, a smile of her own now gracing her features as yours simply widened. "Graciés, Ale!" you exclaimed, wheeling your suitcase forward. You stopped at the door as Alexia pulled you into a hug and placed a quick kiss to your forehead.
"Are we forgetting anything?" she asked, walking with you to the living room, and you thought about it for a moment before shaking your head with an unsure expression, "I don't think so..."
“Wait!”
You ran back into your room quickly, skidding around the corner. Alexia could hear you rummaging around for something and mumbling, ‘Where is it’ and, ‘Mierda’ before you emerged from the room empty handed. She looked down at your feet and laughed when she saw the navy blue house slippers on your feet, paired with the Barça socks you were already wearing.
“Don’t laugh, you don’t understand how nice they are,” you grumbled, brushing her off as she laughed even harder.
The pair of you walked out of Alexia’s apartment with your suitcases in hand, and you took the elevator down to the car park. There was a brief silence in the elevator for a moment, but the urge got the best of you and you began making faces at Alexia in the mirror.
You returned to a normal expression when she suddenly looked at you with her eyebrow raised, and you glanced back at her like she was crazy for being suspicious of you. Once she turned back around, you continued making stupid faces in the mirror while she wasn't looking.
The antics didn't stop when she eventually caught you; instead, Alexia joined in, poking her tongue out at you in the mirror until you both were going back and forth making silly faces at each other for the rest of the elevator ride. Soon, the empty car park was filled with the sound of laughter as the pair of you exited the elevator, stumbling over your own two feet from laughing too hard while you walked to her car.
She unlocked the car and you both hauled your suitcases into the trunk with a grunt. "Dios mío, it wasn't this heavy before..." Alexia mumbled, pulling the trunk lid down before strolling to the driver's side.
You nodded in agreement, letting out a slightly exasperated sigh as you sunk into the passenger seat.
"I can't wait until I can drive," you remarked, buckling your seatbelt. "When that happens, you owe me about... 1,000 car rides," Alexia teased, buckling her own seatbelt as she glanced at you with a small smile. You rolled your eyes, seemingly annoyed at her words, but the smile on your own face told other tales.
You wound down the window a bit, filling the car with fresh air as you emerged out of the car park and traversed the streets of Barcelona. "Are we picking anyone else up?" you inquired, and she shook her head.
"We were going to pick up Irene, but Lucia said she'd drop her off at the airport," Alexia responded, and you acknowledged her words with a little 'oh'.
"Want anything to eat, Chiquita?" Alexia asked, glancing at you for a sliver of a second. You contemplated her question carefully, hesitating every time you thought you had an answer, until eventually you came up with a nod of your head. "I'm craving an almond croissant, you know the ones?"
The blonde nodded her head, knowing exactly what you meant. It only took a few turns before Alexia pulled over in front of your favourite pastry bakery. "Vale, I'll be 2 minutes," she notified, opening her car door and shutting it behind her as she headed for the entrance of the bakery.
Shortly after, she returned with a brown paper bag in hand and a smile on her face. Opening the car door once again and sitting down in her seat, she handed you the bag. Immediately, the sweet aroma of a fresh-out-the-oven, icing sugar-dusted, almond-garnished croissant graced your nostrils. "Graciés, hermana," you thanked her, a smile akin to hers on your face.
"Want a bite?" you asked, offering the warm pastry to her as she merged back onto the main road. She took a little nibble, mumbling a thanks in between her bite. As soon as she straightened herself up, you brought your croissant back to your mouth and took a massive bite, savouring every moment spent with icing sugar on your face. ‘It adds to the experience,’ you thought.
The last bites were consumed at an agonisingly slow pace. You wanted to savour the almond-y goodness, but you also wanted to wolf it down and quit stalling — you were conflicted. Would New Zealand have such nice almond croissants? Probably not, but you’d never know unless you tried!
The prospect of more almond croissants in New Zealand got you through the last few bites without having to mourn the pastry, and before you knew it, the airport was coming into sight.
Travelling wasn’t a new concept for you; in fact, you had lived abroad in France before. You couldn’t say why, but you did for two years (give or take a few months), and some would call it a miracle that Lyon didn’t pick you up before Barcelona did.
You hated living in France anyways. It was pastry heaven, of course, but it was not Vidić lover heaven. They were all about Zidane and Henry, not a single word about Vidić. It was understandable, but still, not cool.
Also, the amount of pigeons freaked you out.
Your phone buzzed in your pocket, and you pulled it out, already knowing who it was. Alexia’s buzzed too, but as she rummaged around for it, you had already opened the message, so she just looked at your screen.

You switched your phone off, shoving it back into your pocket as Alexia spoke with a smile. “This is going to be a fun trip.”
You nodded, your face contorting into a smile of your own as you unbuckled your seatbelt. “Let’s grab our stuff and go to Irene,” you said eagerly, jumping out of the car and rushing to the trunk, pushing up the lid so you could lift your suitcase out slowly.
You wheeled it around the side of Alexia’s car before abandoning it and breaking into a sprint towards Irene, but you were actually heading for Mateo who was toddling along behind her. You swooped him into your arms, and Irene bore an affectionate smile as she watched you carry him.
“Pequeño, I’m gonna miss you!” you said, placing the toddler back down. He latched onto your leg, hugging it tightly, and you ruffled his hair. “I’ll bring you back a friend for Bombón, I promise,” you added, giving Mateo one last hug before picking him up once more and handing him to Lucia. Irene gave the two one last hug goodbye, and then put an arm around your shoulder while her other one held the handle of her suitcase.
Alexia wheeled your luggage back over to you, and held her own in her other hand. “Ready to go?” she asked you and Irene, who both nodded.
“Let’s go!”

PART 4 On the edge
Alpha Jayce x omega reader
Warnings: AOB, light swearing, feral alpha, intimacy, angst, SPOILERS, Fated mates, hurt/comfort, eventual smut
The emotions I was feeling during these last three episodes have me so sad and angsty.
Previous part <-
Tumblr media
Jayce is overly silent, often pacing slowly up and down the small hut, his body twitching occasionally. You wonder what he went through when he was gone, what made him go feral? You don’t want to push, you don’t want to overwhelm him. You’ve returned to the upper-city, he stays with his mother now and you’re left in your small apartment feeling detached. You want the simplicity of being in the lab again, though you weren’t neither as smart as either Jayce or Vik, you helped with keeping things organised, making sure they were fed and slept properly. You don’t bring up the mate test even when you go get one yourself. They hand you a slip of paper and in bold print it says Jayce Talis, the medical officer had winked but you just felt a pit in your stomach. You hardly know what Jayce does anymore, you’ve barely seen him till he knocked on your door in the middle of the night. You’re back on your suppressants, the moment you went home you took them again despite the medical officers warnings, you didn’t care, you didn’t want to feel like this. It’s raining gently again when you open the door, you see Jayce soaked, his hammer by his side a wild look in his eyes and you panic. The hammer hums gently with recent use and you frown.
“Jayce what did you do?” You whisper.
“What I promised” is all he answers.
You sit there Jayces head in your lap while your hand rests on his shoulder, he hadn’t gone back to being feral thankfully, but you still don’t know what he did.
“Jayce” you mutter and he tenses making sag.
“I- I killed Viktor” he whispers and it’s like a shard of ice and your whole body freezes.
“Why?” Is all you manage.
“You wouldn’t understand” he says rolling over nuzzling his face into your stomach.
“I won’t if you won’t tell me” you say voice rising a bit.
“I went somewhere” he begins softly after some silence.
“I was teleported, to our future” he says carefully.
“Piltover, Zaun ruined, nobody was alive, it was all ruined by the hex core inside Viktor. I was chased by something, I fell so far down. I was down there for months, useless” he tenses a low growl on his lips and you rub your hand up and down his arm gently calming him.
“I was stuck but climbed out, I climbed to the top of the hex gate where he met me” his eyes are hard then soft.
“It was him, Viktor, the one who saved me when I was a kid somehow, with the Arcane he- I don’t know” he clenches his fist.
“He made me promise to destroy the hex core, otherwise we’d suffer the same fate” he closes his eyes and nuzzles closer arm going around your waist as he sighs deeply. You try to process his story you really do, Viktor went back in time to save Jayce then forward to meet Jayce and now sent Jayce back to kill himself?
You sit there for a while listening to the gentle patter of rain. Your mind swirling, Jayce is asleep, mouth slightly open as he breathes evenly but deeply. Viktor gone? Truely? or would it repeat from the explosion.
You fall asleep eventually in the early morning, neck awkwardly tilted back. You feel movement and let out a small groan moving your neck into a comfortable position. Lips press to your head and soft words reach your ears.
“I need to go to the council” Jayce whispers.
“I’ll be back for you, I promise” he adds adding another kiss to your cheek before he’s gone. You open your eyes and stare at the ceiling, his scent lingers around you, his warmth dulling. You busy yourself with normal day to day things, wondering if he would be back.
It’s been a few days since then. You rot away in your apartment, you’re forced to go out to get food, you wander the street on auto pilot, grabbing what you need before heading home. You barely get through the door till you’re engulfed in warmth and strong arms. Jayce had charged at you like a bull if his arms weren’t around you, you’d be on the floor.
“Where were you?!” You frown at his tone and hold up the bag of food as he sighs in relief.
“Sorry, I’m sorry- Viktor-“ he runs a hand through his hair. He trimmed it along with his beard you lift your free hand without thinking running it through the soft trimmed hairs. He sighs instantly closing his eyes and nuzzling into it but you smell Mel on him. You draw back a small frown on your face.
“Viktor?” You question instead.
“He got into the council room, Mel’s returned he tried to attack us” he runs a hand through his hair again.
“But-?” You frown.
“He’s controlling these, things I don’t know what they are, he’s not dead, he’s building an army with Ambessa” you frown at the mention of Mel’s mother, why would one such as her team up with Viktor?
“I need you to come with me to the council building, please I need to keep you safe, my mothers already there, we’re going to send a message tomorrow with everyone Piltover- Zaun” he looks stressed, distraught almost and you nod.
“Ok” you say softly and he sighs in relief hugging you tightly again.
“Let me pack” you say without hugging him back.
“Of course, I’ll help” he nods moving around your apartment as if it was his own. You pack your clothes, toiletries and anything else important. Jayce packs the food and some other things before he nods to you. Going to the council building is strange, sure you’ve been here and the research lab but being in the actual council room is daunting. You see Mel there, a white robe and hood, you see Jayces mother, Caitlyn who you haven’t seen in ages and a pink haired alpha woman. Caitlyn looks to you and smiles she walks over and hugs you and you sigh. You haven’t seen her in a while and she was one of your closest friends. You hug her tightly and look to the woman behind her.
“This is Vi” Caitlyn introduces.
“Hi” you nod telling her your name and she nods to you.
“Tomorrow’s gonna be hard” Jayce sighs leaning against the council table.
“Bringing everyone together in a time of need is always a challenge” Ms Talis says.
“We need everyone” Mel says as you peer to the cloth covered thing on the table.
“What’s that?” You ask nodding your head. Jayce turns and sighs going over to it and removing the cover. You frown and walk over eyeing the creature, almost robotic looking.
“Viktor attacked in it” Jayce said and your frown deepens you see the finger prints into its head same ones as the people in the sanctuary.
“He’s making more” he adds.
“He wants whatever is in the Hex gate” he sighs this time.
“Get some rest, tomorrow will be a big day” Mel calls and walks away. So does everyone else leaving you and Jayce.
“What happened to Mel?” You ask softly.
“She went through something” Jayce answers and you nod knowing better than to press.
“You should get some rest” you say going to walk away as Jayce covers the being before grabbing your wrist.
“Stay” he says and you frown and stop looking to him.
“Stay with me tonight” he adds a little breathlessly. You tense a bit but nod figuring he needs some comfort. His room is as you remember, dark blue quilt on a queen bed. The dark wooden furniture and cleanliness, his scent faint but everywhere.
“Jayce-“ you begin to say turning around but lips press to yours making you gasp in shock.
“Jayce wait-“ you press against his chest and he lets out a small sigh and pulls back.
“What are you doing?” You whisper.
“I saw the test” he mutters and you frown for a moment before it clicks.
“Jayce-“ you sigh.
“No- no listen to me please” the alpha begs and you look to him.
“I always had a feeling” he smiles sheepishly and you frown making his smile falter.
“Is that- ok- I- I always felt drawn to you but I didn’t know if it was because of that ok, and everything that’s happened Hex tech-“ he runs a hand through his hair again.
“Mel” you mutter and he frowns.
“It was once” he says and you know you have no right to be jealous over the beta woman but still.
“And it felt wrong, I didn’t-“
“Didn’t want to disappoint” you comment and he grimaces.
“Jayce a war is going to happen as you said, there’s no time for- feelings or mates or- anything” he looks hurt, like you physically struck him. He doesn’t look like the foreboding feral alpha, he looks like a kicked puppy. His hands fall from your shoulders and his head hangs.
“Is that what you want?” He mutters, a tone so soft you’ve never heard it before from him or any alpha for that matter.
“What do you mean what I want?” You ask.
“You don’t want this?” He presses his alpha side pressing through.
“Jayce” you sigh and he nods face hardening and devoid of emotions.
“I’m sorry I brought you here” he says and leaves. You watch him leave standing in his room your hands shaking as you let out a small cry.

SAGAU || When they’re in your party
Razor • Kaeya • Barbara • Xinyan
Notes: this isn’t about party comps, just the single character being in your party regardless of who else is. Starting with these 4 cause they’ve been my party since I started playing in 2020.
Also you can see this as them being your main or just constantly in your party, I think it works either way. Baby’s first tumblr post let’s goooo, maybe one day I’ll figure out a theme
Tumblr media
Razor doesn’t really get the whole Divine Creator thing. He knows you’re important, of course he does. You’re his lupical, but with more authority than even Andrius. You take care of him, and everyone in Wolvendom and the city, and everyone everywhere as well. But, when it comes to some of the specifics… Razor gets a little confused.
He knows you’re called Grace— Teacher always corrects him, but he doesn’t know why adding ‘your’ in front is so important —and that there are festivals and traditions connected with you like there are for Barbatos. But Razor can never remember any of the prayers or songs. Bennett and Fischl took him to the Church once, but the Sister speaking used a lot of words he didn’t know the meaning of, and spoke in long sentences he struggled to focus on.
Andrius says the human customs don’t matter, because Razor has been chosen. Not only as a vessel, as someone marked by the Creator and strengthened with Their power, but also as one of your favoured vessels. Teacher explained how most people, vessels included, couldn’t feel you as strongly as he did, weren’t offered the same kind of strength he had been given since gaining your attention.
Razor knows some people don’t like how you take such good care of him. He’s different from the other people in Mondstadt, unsure of how to even be a person and constantly disturbing others with his cluelessness about human customs. Sometimes he feels guilty, that he doesn’t know how to properly thank you for all you’ve done, doesn’t even fully comprehend what you are and how he should think of you.
But then he feels his claws of steel and lightning grow stronger, feels his injuries miraculously healing after a bad fight, and he thinks that maybe he doesn’t need to know.
Maybe Razor will never get the whole Divine Creator thing, but he loves you, and he can feel how you love him. And Razor is happy.
Tumblr media
Kaeya feels like he’s constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. You’re a god, the god; there’s no way you don’t know what he is. And yet, he was one of the first to become your vessel.
He had expected you to strike him down right then, the moment he felt your presence. But instead, nothing happened. He had stood there outside the Temple of the Wolf, watching the Traveler and Paimon wander away while he was paralysed with fear. The cavalier smile that had protected him for so many years faltered as he struggled to breathe, terror crushing his lungs. Kaeya had thought that was your doing— that you had decided his punishment for existing would be a slow suffocation. But when he finally managed to inhale, he realised that was not the case.
He thought maybe you actually didn’t know, and soon you would lose interest with him and turn your Gaze elsewhere. Except… he continues to get stronger, continues to feel your presence increasing in his life: what once started as a flickering flame now a blazing inferno.
Every time the swing of his blade seems to hit harder than it did the previous day, every time he notices he’s tiring slower than he ever has before, he feels dread creeping up his shoulders. If you don’t know about his heritage, then the more attention you give him, the sooner you will eventually find out.
And if you do… Kaeya doesn’t know what that would mean for him.
He is not made for worship, for reverence, he doesn’t know how. Even if he grew up with his surrogate father teaching him— the Ragnvindr household being a devoted one to both you and Barbatos —prayer always burned his tongue, bitter and acidic. He could never tell if it was because he didn’t wish to be a devotee or because he knew he didn’t deserve to be one, impostor that he was.
So Kaeya waits for the day you finally show your wrath, waits for the day this game comes to an end and you cast him down like all the sinners before him. And, deep inside where he will never bring himself to admit it, he waits for the day where he can finally believe that he, too, is worthy of your care.
Tumblr media
Barbara has never had a greater honour than being one of your favoured. When you began claiming vessels, granting people your presence and lending them your power, she did not expect to be included among them. Amber, Kaeya, Noelle: they were all amazing at protecting the people of Mondstadt, doing so much for the community. Even Lisa, who never hid how she enjoyed slacking off, was a force to be reckoned with when she finally decided she needed to take action (usually when it concerned her books).
Barbara, however, wasn’t a fighter. She was a good healer, and tried her best to make others happy as an idol, but did that really warrant Your attention?
Apparently, it did. And the love she felt for you was enough to make her dizzy, equal parts grateful for the gift of your power and terrified she would disappoint you.
But deep inside, beneath the nerves and melancholy that plagued her heart each day, beneath the desperate need she felt to make others happy and help them, she couldn’t help but feel a quiet, selfish glee. She finally had an area she surpassed her sister in, a sign that she was good enough. Not only was she beloved by the city, but she was beloved by You, the highest ranking divinity in existence.
When she felt exhausted from her duties or her depression threatened to creep in outside of the thirty seconds she allocated for it daily, the ties she held to you, the attention you gave her above anyone else, comforted her more than anything.
So even if it’s hard for her to keep a smile on her face every day, she keeps going anyway. Because you believe in her, and she won’t let you down.
Tumblr media
Xinyan is not the kind of person who gains the favour of the gods. The way she dresses, the way she talks, her knife eyes and frightening smile; she’s the furthest thing from ‘holy’, the furthest thing from the upstanding folk who are assumed to be the Creator’s favourite. The Divine Creator likes elegance, refinement, not loud and excitable, brash things like her.
At least, that’s what everyone else said. From a young age, Xinyan had resolved not to worry too much about it. She appreciated you and Rex Lapis, respected how Liyue was protected by the gods and the adepti, but she never revered any of them as much as some others did.
But somehow, she became a vessel anyways. And sure, some people garnered your attention only to be left alone after; Xinyan expected to be another one of those cases. Until she kept getting stronger, her shields going from a light shimmer to a solid protective bubble, the flames her vision summoned growing every week. It’s great for her shows— both the pyrotechnics and the turnout after word got around about someone like her being a favoured vessel. But, for Xinyan herself, it’s confusing.
No one knows why she has been chosen, especially not her.
At one point she thinks maybe she should focus more on her gentler hobbies: cooking, sewing, things that match the respectability that is expected from a vessel. Except she doesn’t feel Your presence when she’s at home working on her embroidery; she feels it when she’s performing, or fighting, or just running around Liyue (accidentally) causing trouble.
So sure, she might not be the typical candidate for a vessel, and she might have no idea why you picked her, but damn what anyone else has to say about it.
With the warmth inside her chest and the strength in her vision, she knows you’re happy with your choice.

Do you write poly marauders? if so could you write one where they all live in a cute little apartment together, but the boys have gone away for week (or however long) and reader (preferably fem) kind of loses herself. like she starts eating less or at irregular times, kinda lets apartment get messy, wears same clothes everyday and is over all sad. the boys come home and find what's happening and comfort/help her. Mega fluff?!
hope this is enough inspo!
love your writing!!!
thank you :))
I LOVE THIS! I’ve been wanting to write poly!marauders forever and now I have an excuse. A kiss for you, anon.
(I might edit to add more details to the ending later!!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“It’s just a week. We will be back soon, okay, Angel?” James coos to you, kissing you softly.
The boys are all heading out, bags in hand, saying their goodbyes.
“It’s actually 6 days, Jamie, not a week.” Sirius says, pointedly.
“Excuse me…” James says sarcastically to Sirius, then, turning to you, “6 days, then, Princess. Think you can make it without us that long?”
“Yes, I’ll be fine.” You say, giggling at James’ almost-overly-sensitive tone. He’s always babied you the most.
Remus says, exasperatedly, “I wouldn’t even be going to this Quidditch game if it wasn’t to make sure these idiots don’t fall off the stands, gorgeous girl, you know that, right?”
You giggle even harder at that, “Yes, I know. Now, go and have fun.”
You usher them out the door and into the hallway of your apartment. Luxurious, ceiling-high windows, a kitchen all of you could judge James’ latest experimental dish in, and a living room couch (made of clouds) facing the most expensive TV screen Sirius could afford.
What was originally Sirius’ apartment became Sirius and James’ apartment. Soon after, Remus moved in. Lastly, they asked you to move in once your relationship became more serious.
You walk around the suddenly too-quiet apartment. The cool floor feels more evident on your feet than before and a chill runs down your spine. You climb onto the couch, pull a blanket to your chin, and turn on a show for background noise. You fall asleep almost immediately.
The next morning, you wake up expecting the boys’ arms around you. Sirius snoring loudly, James spread out, pushing Remus off the bed- this was your normal morning routine. Waking up on the couch was never an option before. If you fell asleep on the couch, one of the boys, usually Sirius, would carry you to bed.
With nobody around to do that this morning (and no snoring to be heard from anywhere) you start to feel an empty, lonely feeling. Usually you or James or Remus would make breakfast but you didn’t feel like eating. You make yourself a cup of coffee and relax for the rest of the day. For dinner, you order a pizza and eat the whole thing. It was the only thing you had ate that day and told yourself tomorrow would be better.
That night, you fall asleep fitfully.
The days after are no better, in actuality, they were worse. One night you couldn’t sleep at all and at 3am you give up. You go to the living room, stare out the window at the city below and watch the cars light up the street. Even at 3am, cars are still going. You think too much about who’s in those cars and what they’re doing. Why are they driving at 3am? Some of them could be driving to the hospital right now. Some of them are just now getting off work. Some of them are teenagers who want to get away from their parents to smoke weed at the abandoned house on 7th Street.
You think about how out of all the people in the world, Remus, Sirius, and James chose you.
Suddenly, a thought hits you- there on the couch at damn near 4 in the morning. “They left me, they went on a trip to see someone else… They never chose me after all…”
You believe its true. You believe it so bad you go to sleep, crying, right there on the couch.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hours (or was it days?) later you wake up to keys jingling outside the door. Panic hits you at first. You look around the living room and kitchen. Pizza boxes, McDonald's cheeseburger wrappers, and an old, door-dashed Starbucks drink, definitely growing mold by now, lay around you. And that’s not even counting the bedroom.
They walk in, bags in hand. Smiling at first, then immediately frowning when they see the state of the apartment; the state of you. Shame hits you like a brick. You think about the scene in Home Alone when the robber gets a iron smashed into his face. You think that might feel better.
James is the first to drop everything and coddle you, as usual. He rushes to you, thrusting himself in your arms. You immediately feel better.
“Are you okay? You look so sad, puppy.” He strokes your hair and you smile as the familiar James scent reaches you.
Remus and Sirius are hugging you moments after.
You cry but laugh. You feel silly for ever thinking they were visiting another person.
“What’s going on? You missed us?” Sirius says, pouting.
“Yes, I missed you!” you cry-laugh and throw a pillow from the couch at him.
Remus giggles when you miss.
You explain the situation to them and how you got a little insecure in their departure.
Sirius carries you to bed and Remus holds you while James makes you a proper dinner.
After, Remus runs you a bath, just how you like it. Sirius brushes and braids your hair.
While you were taking a bath, it seemed like the trash disappeared magically. You figured Remus had cleaned it.
Nobody mentions the mess, the boys are all just glad you're feeling better.
You fall asleep with all the boys cradled around you in your big bed. You only start to fall into a deep sleep when you hear Sirius snoring softly.

Beware of major Trigun spoilers!
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Read from right to left
(they are not necessarily chronological to the events in the au, I’ll just be drawing what scenes come to mind)
First part of my Vashwood Reincarnation AU that I’m gonna call “Cutting the Strings of Fate”, which planted itself in my mind some days ago! The concept takes part in the future after the Trigun Maximum events.
While I was drawing I was wondering if Vash is a bit too ooc here maybe? Tristamp Vash is a pretty diffcícult character to grasp for me, but I think considering that he hasn’t really lived through all that that he did in the anime, and just starts to remember the events in the manga, it’s ok if he’s a bit more carefree at first, and not so completely the depressed and sad puppy from the anime...Anyway, mixing the Tristamp characters with the Trimax universe was a fun idea to me! I love both iterations of the characters and their respective universes a lot, sooo why not mash them together?
Look under the cut for the whole story idea:
Many decades after the events of Trigun Maximum, Vash is reborn on the same planet. Even though still needed to sustain themselves, humans are less dependant of plants now, and the great project to cultivate the planet has been very successfull, with the first forests and occassional green that will grow out of the dry soil. Vash is a young but skillful plant engineer, who will also from time to time help out in different towns to have a look at their local plants. One day he starts having dreams about his past life, with them getting clearer and clearer and revealing more of his past. He meets Zazie, who is still the old Beast who knew Vash the Stampede. Because of that, Zazie notices that the very individual electric impulse of Vash, that every being gives off and can be detected by the worms, is indeed very close to the same signal of Vash the Stampede. Thus confirming that  Vash is indeed some kind of reincarnation.
Vash's brother Nai works as a bioengineer, looking after the preservation of important vegetation in another city, where their mother Rem lives, too. Vash meets Wolfwood, who starts to help out in the plant facility as a odd-job man, and they grow closer together. One day though, an accident happens, convincing Vash and Zazie that Vash's history is trying to repeat itself. They fear that just like in the past, Nai who is obviously another reincarnation could run berserk, and that Rem and Wolfwood are, just as well, in danger to become fate's victim once again.
With the help of Zazie that can feel how, after each past event repeating itself in some way, Vash's and the others' electric signals grow closer to their past selves', they try to defy fate and bring about a happy end for everyone. (Yay!)

Tumblr media
"I brought you some treats! I hope you’re hungry!" Jungwon placed the woven basket of freshly made delights before you on the center of the picnic mat, his cheerful voice snatching your focus from the daunting thoughts clouding your mind.
"Thank you, Won-ah," you smiled, feigning a sense of gratitude towards his unusual gesture.
"So," he began, revealing the goodie’s hidden beneath the white cloth of the basket. "What do you think of my garden?"
"Well, it’s a change that I’ll have to learn to get used to," you admitted, too timid to meet his curious feline eyes. "My life in the city followed a work-sleep-repeat schedule," you went on. "Where I’m from, no one really cared to spend their free time outdoors. Your garden, though... it’s rather strange at best, especially considering that you’ve maintained it all by yourself."
Jungwon simply nodded in response as he arranged a few sandwiches and a bowl of sweet cream and sugar-soaked strawberries for the two of you on a sharing platter, savoring one of the bright red berries in his mouth.
"Jungwon?"
He swallowed and said, "Yes, my love?"
"Are you going to keep me here forever?"
Chirping birds in the distance temporarily filled the silence.
"Hmm… When you’re deeply in love with someone, you often like to think that time is an irrelevant variable. I would say that forever is quite a strong word, yet, a perfect one to describe my infinite love for you." His eyes lit up at the mere thought of infinity and beyond with you, the love of his life.
You nodded in response, taking a corner of one of the sandwiches Jungwon had prepared into your mouth, sinking your teeth into the soft white bread.
"I’m not much of a cook, but I tried to recreate the little sandwiches you used to make me at the cafe to the best of my ability. I remember when you recommended that I try them because they were your favorite lunch item on the menu." He smiled to himself at the memory before searching your features for any clue as to what was going on in your head.
"It’s not identical, but I almost prefer your version of the treat," you admitted, trying to mask the awkwardness between you two. "It’s sweeter. Softer. Unlike the stale bread and recycled fruit I’d make them with at the cafe,"
Jungwon chuckled in response, and your lips couldn’t help but tug upward at each corner. Deep down, you wanted to believe that somewhere in Jungwon’s twisted brain, he was the same shy and innocent boy you previously met at your cafe job on a slow Tuesday morning.
The boy you wanted to learn more about at your own pace and on your own terms.
The boy you used to dream would somehow save you from the mundane patterns of your exhausting city life.
Though, in an odd way, you got what you asked for.
"Jungwon?"
"Yes," he answered, yet asked, slightly curious about your reasons for wanting to question him again.
"Are you anything like the ‘you’ I met before all this?"
It had only been three days since Jungwon had abducted you, hiding you away in his garden of arcane wonders. Before today, you and him had hardly made any conversation since you arrived here, as he didn’t see any need for chatting given the fact that you two had already gotten to know each other personally. Just yesterday, he offered to give you a tour of one of the smaller greenhouses he owned, saying that you would have to wait a while before he showed you the rest of his field. Presently, this is your first time leaving your "room" since day one, mostly for Jungwon’s selfish desires of wanting to have a little picnic date with you. Perhaps this was all a ploy to manipulate your trust. Nonetheless, you wanted to use this time with Jungwon as an opportunity to ask him to clarify his deeper intentions. The only things Jungwon had made verbally clear to you were a set of rules for you to follow and that you were his and his only.
He cleared his throat before saying, "Yes. I am the same Jungwon that you met at the cafe as I am now and always will be. The only thing that’s changed are my feelings for you. They’ve grown since I brought you here with me. Since I’ve shared this part of my life with you." A forlorn expression waved over his features for a moment. He looked into your weak eyes as if speaking to your soul.
"I love you."
You felt obligated to say a set of three words back to him, but they were caught in your throat. You swallowed your own resistance and blurted out a shaky, "I love you, too, Jungwon," hoping that you sounded as sincere as you wanted him to believe you were. It’s not that you were incapable of ever loving Jungwon. At one point, you felt like you almost did. Unfortunately, all of those "what ifs" went out the window after the garden. Even after considering Jungwon’s plea for innocence, you felt in your gut that you still couldn’t trust him. Rightfully so, given that he had already betrayed your trust on such a level. Your false confession of love rang true to Jungwon’s ears, and the forlorn look on his face faltered, being replaced with his familiar smile. It startled you to see how the smile of his that used to comfort you had already become one of fright.
"Come here," he said, motioning for you to sit on his lap in a lotus position. He braced the small of your back with his larger hand, the other hand alternating between exploring either your thigh, cheek, or loose baby hairs. You could hardly keep eye contact with him, missing the close proximity you two had once enjoyed on the checkered picnic mat.
"I think it’s only fair that I ask you a question of my own, seeing that you’ve interrogated me twice thus far."
In that moment, Jungwon somehow made you feel guilty for not trusting him. It's been a few days, and you’ve been alright as rain under his sheltering. He certainly had been as sweet as the boy you first met, but you still couldn’t let his words disregard the facts. Jungwon had kidnapped you and never intended on letting you go. He lured you in like a fish in water, and you took the bait. Trying to avoid asking him what he wanted to know, as that would be yet another question on your behalf, you confessed, saying: "Whatever the question may be, I promise to answer you truthfully this time. I’m sorry for lying to you about certain things in the past."
You looked so submissive in Jungwon’s eyes while situated in his lap with your legs wrapped around him, his greedy hands left to explore your soft skin and every curve of your anxious body. You regained some ability to maintain eye contact with him while you awaited his question, your docile doe eyes opening a gate to Jungwon’s wildest fantasies of you, as your two hearts were the only beats present in this lonely field. You noticed Jungwon’s previously innocent aura falter into a darker, more lustful one upon feeling the sensation of his length growing harder beneath you. Your eyes fell to his lap and widened at the sight of his bulge.
"Jungwo-" he stopped you mid-sentence by taking your chin in his free hand, forcing you to meet his eyes. He remembered your previous confession of dishonesty regarding your past interactions with him, inspiring a catalog of questions he wanted to ask you before settling on the one most important to him.
"____," he sighed, feeling his body tingle all over at the mere contact with your now goosebump-bathed skin. This state had you both scared for different reasons. For him, it was the closeness of the moment—an obedient you cradled in his embrace like he’d always dreamed of. For you, it was also the closeness, coupled with the sight of an obsessed and hungry Jungwon biting back every will in his body to ravish you on the spot. The dainty meal he had prepared was long forgotten, likely to be left to insects and other wild life to feast upon in the meantime. He smoothed the tiny bumps on your nervous arm with a hard hand, hoping to ease your apparent nerves that only grew with the delay of his question.
"Were you lying to me when you said you weren’t a virgin?"
The question caused a pit to form in your stomach. It was written all over your face. However, as in most cases, Jungwon was more concerned with your answer than how his question made you feel. The fact that he was already hard just made the situation even more painful. He seemed to be patient for your response, but you didn’t want to push your luck and forced yourself to answer, but only with a soft mumble.
"Yes, I- I'm a virgin," you regretfully admitted, looking away from his face again, feeling some sort of strange shame. Silence filled the air as you awaited a sentence from Jungwon that never came. Only his pouty lips linked with yours, not exactly according to the way you previously would’ve preferred your first kiss with him to be, and certainly not under such circumstances. You instinctively pulled away in disgust, but luckily, with him being caught up in his own delusions, he saw your resistance to his kiss as a break for air. Suddenly, the dreamy boy you met in the cafe lost all of his charm, looking no different from a casual pervert.
"You’re mine. From the moment I saw you, I fucking knew your soul belonged to me. It’s hard to believe a beautiful girl like you is so intimately pure." He laved at his own lips, trying to steady his breathing.
"Were you waiting for me? Love?"
You struggled in his grip, senselessly trying to get away from him, knowing that you wouldn’t get very far.
"What is it, _____? I thought you loved me," his voice cracked, almost in a confused cry.
"Eugh!" you squirmed as he held you tighter.
"You can’t force me to love you back!"
That comment stung like a needle in his heart.
"Force you? So you lied to me. Again?"
"I can learn to love you, Jungwon! Just not like this!" You pleaded with him, your eyes beginning to well with tears. Though his despair soon returned to its original lustful desires. He pushed you off of his lap and pinned you by your hands to the picnic mat, your arms framing your head so gracefully.
"You have no idea how long I’ve wanted this—to be so close to you that we’re breathing each other’s air," he confessed in between a trail of wet kisses, his sugary pink saliva glistening on your neck and collarbone under the sunlight peeking through the trees. He hungrily nibbled on your exposed skin, causing a moan to erupt from your throat unintentionally. The vibrations from your throat tantalized his lips, forcing a low grunt from him as he smirked against your flesh, the once-uncomfortable nips turning into painful pinches. His hand focused on kneading your hip before gripping your waist, the other curiously hovering over one of your breasts before taking hold of it like his life depended on it.
"Please, Jungwon-ah," you whimpered, your tears still too shy to fully come out, or perhaps it was the newfound anger and hate you’d developed for him that hindered your tears from flowing. He stopped his ministrations to your neck and chest momentarily, his elbows caging you beneath him. He stared at you with an uncanny fondness, thinking to himself how much he’d like to force those bashful tears out of your eyes with his greedy dick alone.
"Shh, my flower... You have nothing to be afraid of. You’re safe here with me," he said in a soft voice, causing you to spiral in your head, a thick tear finally daring to tip over the damp edge of your lower eyelid. His eyes followed the tear, sliding down your cheeks before resting in the crook of your chest. He dove down to catch the liquid with his tongue, but was halted by a harsh slap planted right across his face. ‘Why did I do that?’ you thought to yourself.
"You little bitch," he cursed, flipping you on your stomach and restraining your movements with much greater success than before. He unzipped his pants and pressed his hardness on your back, leaning close enough to your ear so you could hear the sick nothings he whispered to you.
"Do you feel that, love? That’s how much power you have over me. My manhood has always been my weakest member. It submits to you in ways I both love and hate. But I have control over your entire body, and don’t you ever fucking forget that," he ordered, sitting on your legs as he hurriedly stammered to remove your clothing. You knew that at this point, fighting wouldn’t help you, but the haste with which your clothes were flying off your body only added fuel to your rage. You felt foolish, used, and soon to be abused under his tight grip. He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and you damned yourself for not seeing it any sooner. A cacophony of thoughts ran through your head, making you feel much more than half-crazy. You wanted to cry, and you did. You wanted to scream, but you couldn’t. The only sound that escaped your mouth was a weak, raspy sentence:
"I’m not a flower, Jungwon."
He stopped abruptly, staring at your bare and bruised figure beneath him, glistening in a sheen of sweat. Your rebuttal rang true in his ears, and he said to himself, yes, you were indeed far from a flower. For now, that is. His aggressive demeanor switched to that of a more calm and understanding one. He leaned down to gently peck an appealing corner of your neck that he had previously marked, a cherry red hue rising to the surface of your skin. He then trailed a finger down your spine, saying something that you didn’t know was either to you or himself.
"Why didn’t I think of that before? Every flower ought to have petals." You were very confused yet grateful that the abuse didn’t go any further, with Jungwon leaping off of your tired body and running off to his personal shed, leaving a naked, crying you sprawled upon the checkered picnic mat alone under the sun. The once tasty delights had become the second most disgusting thing in the dreaded garden, with Jungwon placing first.

A New World: part 8
Bayverse!Leonardo x reader
Tumblr media
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
Tumblr media
A/N: I know absolutely nothing about multi dimensions, other than what is being said in fictional works, so I thought, eh, let me have my own crack at making up something about it, heh.
Tumblr media
Leo is 25, reader is 22 - 23.
Warnings: None for now💙
Tumblr media
Leo wasn’t happy when (Y/N) came back empty handed, nor was he happy to be caught watching more of himself on her TV screen. If felt like being caught by your own parents, with your hand down the cookie jar. Embarrassing. Only that it felt even more embarrassing for Leo, especially when it was the exact same version of him, having a hero moment, being given the key to the city alongside his brothers. very embarrassing. But his embarrassment was far overshadowed by the sadness of (Y/N)’s news, slumping back into the couch with his face in his hands. She had nothing. He was stuck here…
“There must be something we can do”, (Y/N) said, walking in circles in the living room, tapping her chin in thought. At this pace, it was just a matter of time before she would start creating indents in her wooden floor.
“Like what?”, Leo said, looking up from his hands with an exhausted expression. “That was our last option”.
“Well, at least the last option that we know of”, she said, trying to give him an optimistic smile. Trying was the keyword.
Leo sighed, rubbing his face again. Just as he had hoped this woman was becoming less unbearable, she turned out to be just as annoying as before. This world was about to drive him mad.
“I don’t know how you expect to learn of a different way to do it. Or at least one that actually works”, Leo said, feeling himself getting drained from all energy. “We might as well give up. There’s no way this is going to work”.
(Y/N) stopped dead in her tracks, staring directly at Leo, as if his words had just personally insulted her. “Give up?! We can’t give up! It’s not like you to give up! You always figure something out! You always do! That’s what the ninja turtle Leonardo do! The leader in blue! Does whatever it takes to get his ninjas through!”
“Will you quit rimming and quoting cartoon intros?”
“No I’ll not!”, she said, stepping just in front of Leo, forcing him to look up at her. It honestly took Leo slightly aback. “You can’t just give up! We can’t just give up! You have only been here for two days! Shell, who knows, maybe the others are trying to find a way to get you back! Maybe all you have to do is wait before Donnie and April figure something out! Maybe they are working in a machine or something as we’re speaking, and in a moment Vern will trip over some wires, which somehow turns out to be exactly what is needed for the machine to work!”
“I’m afraid you’re putting too much faith in Vern’s abilities”, Leo said.
“That doesn’t matter”, (Y/N) said, taking a seat next to Leo on the couch, once again taking a moment to take in his huge size next to her. Though he was slumping over, he was still so much larger than her. Her head only ever so slightly reaching up over his shoulder. Yet he looked so… sad, maybe even broken. He was truly stumped on this. He had no idea what to do. For the first time ever, was Leonardo from the Bayverse universe ready to give up. And it scared (Y/N). The Leo she had known all her childhood would never give up. So she couldn’t let him do it now.
“Leo, I mean it. You can’t give up. In all the time I’ve known you, you’ve never given up. You’ve always kept going till you found a way, even if it took some time and seemed a little off. You always find a way”.
“You met me two days ago”, Leo said dismissively, his gaze seemingly locked on his fingertips as they pressed against each other.
“No, Leo. It’s you that met me two days ago. I’ve known you pretty much all of my life, remember?”, (Y/N) said, nodding towards all the DVDs still laying out in front of them. “You have been there everyday as I grew up. There was a time where you really helped me, Leo”. Leo looked at her in slight confusion, his brow muscles frowning, as if he in some way asked her to explain what she meant, and so she did, playing nervously with her thumbs as she did so. “There was a time, back in kindergarten, where I was really scared. The other kids were starting to say… some not so nice things to me. They poked fun at the way I was dressed, and the fact that I in some ways was a little bit different than them. But then, one day, I remember I saw you and your brothers on television”, she said, nodding towards the 2003 DVDs. “It was not the first time I saw you, and it was certainly not the last time. You were fighting Shredder, and you were brave. Nothing held you back, just like I wished nothing would hold me back”. (Y/N) smiled at her thumb, when the small flashes of disjointed memories came through her mind. “So I brought an action figure of you with me to kindergarten, so that I could feel braver. And it worked. I felt brave”.
(Y/N) did not expect Leo to smile at this, but to her surprise, he genuinely did. He even chuckled at the thought of her, watling around kindergarten, clutching an action figure of him to her chest. It was almost absurd to think of. But with everything around him taken into account, then maybe it wasn’t…
Leo sat for a moment, thinking through what she had just told him. He knew she was trying to comfort him, letting him know that it would all be okay in the end. And though he still felt conflicted, and at that moment couldn’t see how anything was going to work out, his best option was to believe her, and hope she was right. There was simply no other thing to do.
“Well”, Leo said, finally turning back towards (Y/N). “Since we can only wait and see now, do you have anything else planned for today?”
(Y/N) sat for a moment, before a sudden smile flashed onto her face. “No, but I have an idea”.
“What?”
“Wanna go to the zoo?”
“What”.
“This better be important”, Agent Bishop said as he marched into the lab, having rushed back at the sound of Dr. Lilja’s message, his son standing in the doorway into the lab, clutching his Ninja Turtles pillow tight, playing with its blue bandana nervously. He had never liked the way his father walked towards his scientists, and today didn’t make him feel any better…
“I promise you, sir, I think you will find this information very important”, Dr. Lilja said, directing Agent Bishop towards his monitor, pointing out the numbers for him. “I looked through the data just before I called for you”.
“And what did you find?”, Bishop asked, his patients already growing thin. He didn’t look at numbers for a reason. That was why he hired people to do it for him.
“I found a momentarily thinning in the air and atmosphere, indicating a dimensional breakthrough”, Lilja said, showing Bishop exactly where.
“What?!”, Bishop exclaimed, almost pushing Lilja away from the screen, making his son hide behind his pillow for a moment. It was a reflex at this point. Whenever his father raised his voice around one of the scientists, the boy now knew better than to look. He learned very quickly after the last time he saw Stockman…
“How is that possible?”, Bishop asked, something brewing within his voice. “I thought you said thinning the air and atmosphere naturally was next to impossible”.
“It’s because it didn’t happen naturally”, Dr. Lilja said. “It was most likely man made”.
“What?!”, Agent Bishop exclaimed, his face getting red, his mind already running to several different scenarios in which Lilja had backstabbed him, sabotaged his machine and sent the blue paper to one of his enemies. “How? How?! You little scum! Have gone behind my back!”
“No! No!”, Dr. Lilja yelled, holding up his hands as a form of protection from Bishop, as he came for him. “It was the machine! The explosion! It worked! Not as intended, but it worked! Whatever your son did, it worked!”
Agent Bishop halted his attack on Dr. Lilja, staring blankly at him for a moment. “What did you say?”
“The explosion. I thought it broke the machine, but as it turns out, it might actually have been a sign that it worked. And it is very likely that your son accidentally turned it on”, Dr. Lilja said, still hiding behind his hands.
Bishop looked from the cowering scientist to his son, who stood nervously and fiddled with the blue straps on the pillows bandana. Maybe he should buy him another one soon. They seemed to calm him down and keep him out of trouble. At least it seemed so.
“The machine worked?”, Bishop asked, his voice hiding something that Lilja couldn’t put his finger on. “The machine created a portal to another dimension?”
“It seems so, yes”, Dr. Lilja said. “That’s why there was a momentary thinning of the air and atmosphere. Lessen the density of the universe, and it will be easier to force a short connection with another”.
“How long was the portal open?”, Bishop asked, a sudden stern urgency in his voice. One that neither Dr. Lilja or the boy was used to.
“Not long”, Lilja said, taking a quick look at the numbers on his screen. “Nothing more than four seconds”.
Bishop’s expression tightened. ”Has anything been able to get through it?”
Dr. Jilja’s face paled at Agent Bishop’s words, at the realization. He had no idea. He had no idea of if anything had gotten through, nor did he know where the portal had led to, let alone he had no idea where in this world the portal may had opened. And with that realization, Lilja turned back towards his computer, tapping away on the keys in a haze, trying to find answers. Numbers rolled onto his screen, one after another, his eyes zigzagging across them, gaining as much information as possible. Agent Bishop leaned in, reading along as Dr. Lilja’s findings came up. And then it came up, leaving Lilja in a semi frozen state, with Agent Bishop waiting for him to explain what he was reading.
“There’s readings of unfamiliar matter, ever since the portal opening”, Dr. Lilja mumbled, staring in shock at the screen. How had he not noticed?
Agent Bishop looked at Dr. Lilja for a moment, taking in the words he had just muttered. It was by the look in Agent Bishop’s eyes, he realized what this all meant.
“My son turned on the machine”, Agent Bishop said, as if he thought out loud. “A portal was created, and something came through that portal”. Lilja felt himself sweat at the sound of Bishop’s words, fearing what would come next. “Yet it didn’t happen at our base. Where did it happen?”
Once again, Dr. Lilja found himself in shock and disbelief at Agent Bishop’s words. How could he not have thought of these things before now?
“I- I have no idea”, Dr. Lilja stammered, shaking slightly, knowing Agent Bishop wouldn’t like those words.
“Then figure it out”, Agent Bishop said sternly, a slight sneer in his voice. “Or else you wouldn’t be the only one in trouble soon”.
Bishop stood up straight from Lilja’s screen, before making his way back towards his stunned son, who was still processing the conversation that had just taken place. He had opened a portal into another world, unleashing something unknown into this world. The revelation made the boy's stomach turn in an uncomfortable way. And as his father put a soft hand on his head, before guiding him away from the lab. The boy hugged his Leonardo pillow tighter against him, not daring to look up at his father as he spoke. He hoped that Dr. Lilja would figure something out. Never would he want something bad to happen to his best friend, just because he did something stupid.

Simon Ghost Riley x you
Part 4
"I'm leaving"
Tumblr media
After that night, nothing was the same.
I had thought I was in control—thought that I could keep this secret, this dangerous attraction to Ghost, buried deep within me. But every time I closed my eyes, his presence consumed me. Every time I walked through the halls of the hospital, my mind was torn between pretending to be the dutiful wife and wanting to give in to the man who had marked me, body and soul.
Ghost and I began meeting in secret. Every stolen moment, every whispered conversation behind closed doors, was more electrifying than the last. He never pushed me for more, but the tension between us grew each time we saw each other. He never asked about my life, my marriage, yet it was clear from his actions that he wasn’t looking for anything casual.
At night, I would sneak out to meet him in dark, hidden corners of the city, away from the prying eyes of my husband. We never went to the same place twice, never lingered long enough to be seen. But when I was with him, I forgot everything else. There were no responsibilities, no obligations. There was only *us*.
And when I kissed him—when his hands roamed my body, when his lips devoured mine—I felt wanted in a way I hadn’t in years.
But then came the day I was dreading.
I was sitting at my desk, going through the usual paperwork, when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Ghost:
*I’m leaving.*
I stared at the screen, my heart skipping a beat. There was no explanation, no detail. Just those three words.
I quickly typed back: *When? Where? Why?*
A few moments later, another message appeared:
*Mission. Can’t say more.*
My chest tightened.
I had known this moment would come. The man who lived a life so dangerous, so full of secrecy and risk, couldn’t stay in one place for long. But that didn’t make it any easier.
I slipped out of my office, my pulse hammering in my ears as I made my way to the emergency exit. We’d always met in the shadows, but this time, it felt different. I needed to see him before he left, needed to know that this—whatever it was—was real.
As I rounded the corner near the hospital’s back parking lot, I spotted him leaning against his motorcycle, waiting for me in the dim light. The mask, that damned skull mask, hid his face as always, but I could see the stiffness in his posture, the tension that radiated off him. He was waiting for me to say something.
“I got your message,” I said, my voice trembling despite my efforts to stay calm.
He nodded, not offering a smile, just a simple acknowledgment.
“I don’t want you to go,” I whispered, the words slipping out before I could stop them.
His blue eyes met mine, unreadable yet filled with something I couldn’t quite decipher. “It’s not about what we want,” he said, his voice gruff, like he was struggling with the words. “It’s about what I have to do.”
I stepped closer, my heart aching. “I… I don’t want this to end, Ghost. I don’t want you to leave.”
He pushed off from the motorcycle, his hand reaching for me. The moment his fingers brushed my skin, I felt a heat surge through me, but it was different this time. There was a certain finality in his touch. He wasn’t just pulling me close; he was marking me, reminding me of the boundary we couldn’t cross.
“You knew this wasn’t forever.” His voice softened, but there was still that edge, that command in his tone. “I never promised you anything. This was always meant to be temporary.”
“I know…” I whispered, feeling the sting of reality cut through the fantasy I’d let myself fall into.
He cupped my cheek gently, his thumb tracing the outline of my jaw. His touch was both tender and possessive, like he was memorizing the feel of me before he left. “You’ll be fine,” he murmured. “You always are.”
I nodded, my throat tight.
“I’ll be back,” he said, though it sounded more like a warning than a promise.
I reached up, my fingers brushing his mask. He didn’t pull away, just stood there, letting me touch him in my own way.
For a long moment, we just stood there, a silent understanding passing between us. The world felt like it was on pause.
And then, without another word, he turned and walked away, his boots echoing in the night as he climbed onto his motorcycle and vanished into the darkness.
I stood there for what felt like hours, my heart heavy, my mind consumed with the reality of what had just happened.
And then I remembered—I still had a life to return to. A husband, a routine. And I knew, deep down, that when Ghost left, part of me would go with him.

A playdate goes wrong as Jack’s daughter goes missing ⚽️
18+ ONLY - ADULT THEMES
(Unedited)
“Daddy do I have to go to the game with you? I want to finish watching my show.” Patricia complained
“Don’t you want to play with Clover?” Jack said as he put her hair in two pigtails and laid out her clothes for her. You were off on a girls day with Jack’s mom, aunt, and Grandmother.
You were practicing leaving Jack completely on his own on his daddy daughter days as he was gone for days and weeks at a time and needed to bond as much as possible with Patricia or “P” as he affectionately called her. Patricia was a stubborn 4 year old and had many of Jack’s traits which included her already well developed negotiation skills.
“Ok daddy how about I finish my show and Duaney can drive me later to the game.” She tried which annoyed and impressed her dad at the same time.
“P” Jack said firmly “Clover is excited to meet you, now put this on or we’ll be late.” He held up her shirt to help her into it. She sighed and rolled her eyes. “When did you start rolling your eyes young lady?”
“Since now.” She retorted sassily. Jack didn’t know whether to laugh or chide her to mind her mouth and manners.
“I’m not the one P.” Jack said with a frown that had Patricia turn on the charm.
“Ok my daddy. I’ll be nice.” She said sweetly and planted a kiss on his forehead as she hung onto his neck for him to help her into her New Balance track pants and New Balance sneakers. Jack melted and a little smile creeped up on his face.
She had a complexion that was not as pale as Jack’s but not as brown as yours with gorgeous curls from both of you, 1 dimple, and hazel eyes, a compromise nature seemed to make between your brown eyes and Jack’s baby blues.
She had freckles on her nose like her dad and a lazy eye she wore glasses for like him. She was sassy, smart, and was already able to carry a tune, something you and Jack had butted heads on. You wanted her to go to college and he was always sneaking her off to the studio. “She has potential Y/N” he would argue and continued to take her to his sessions and beg her not to tell you. Patricia learned how to negotiate for extra screen time for her silence. Like his parents Jack and you limited her screen time to 2 hrs/day.
“If you play with Clover nicely I’ll give you an extra hour on your iPad ok?” Jack said knowing her currency to agree to almost anything except eating her vegetables.
NLE Choppa and Jack were in the same XXL Freshman class but hadn’t spoken much since they made the cover what seemed like a lifetime ago. Both their careers had taken off keeping them busy and on the road and both now were fathers.
NLE was playing in Kentucky and of course as all hip hop artists knew it was good manners to pay the King of Kentucky homage. Jack decided to invite NLE and his daughter Clover to a Louisville FC game so their daughter’s who were the same age could make friends.
NLE and Clover often made adorable daddy/daughter videos of them dancing but Jack kept things with Patricia less public as per his tendency to keep his private life private. Today Jack was sure would be all over social media and it was the rare time he was ok with it. Fans had been dying for a daddy/daughter moment.
In her first 4 years you and Jack made sure Patricia wasn’t in the public eye that much and family sightings by paparazzi were rare as the whole city protected you and respected your wishes. Louisville was a low key place so you and Jack had a fairly peaceful life…that is until 2 little girls joined forces.
Jack and Patricia headed to their box seats to mild cheers from fans who were expecting to see Jack as part owner but were thrilled to see Patricia. Cell phones came out immediately to snap a pic of her as she settled shyly on her daddy’s lap and hugged him around his neck drawing a collective awwww from the crowd. As Jack and Patricia were brought popcorn and drinks a buzz started in the venue and whispers.
NLE and Clover showed up dressed the same as they often did for appearances and events. Today they had on matching pink and white track suits. Clover had pink and white beads on the end of her braids to match her outfit that Patricia thought were really pretty. Clover shyly smiled at Patricia as she stuck to her daddy as well. Folks were used to Jack’s preppy and clean appearance so NLE looked like a rockstar to them as he was covered in tattoos and wore a stack of chunky gleaming chains with a full set of diamond grills when he laughed and smiled with Jack.
Both extremely handsome rappers were at the top of their game enjoying life to the fullest with Jack coming off a long hiatus about to once again dominate the charts, and NLE the fastest rising independent artist out with a streak of viral moments and hits. When the superstar showed up the media and fans went nuts at the unexpected appearance.
2 superstar dads on a playdate hit IG in minutes. Were they collabing? Was Jack performing at NLE’s show later that night? Were they working on a movie together? What was going on? Fans were losing their minds with chats exploding with speculation, and every girl made emergency plans to be ready for an any mention of an epic afterparty.
“What up playa?” NLE greeted Jack in a solid dap and a hug.
“Man you almost as tall as me.” Jack said sizing up the 6”2 rapper against his 6”3 frame and the 2 burst out laughing. It was too much for ladies in the venue watching the tall and handsome dads chat while their daughter’s hung onto them uncertain of what was happening. Clover was more used to the spotlight than Patricia who was already showing signs of being tired.
“Yo P.” Jack said lifting her little head off his shoulder and prying her hands off him to sit her down in the seat beside him and next to Clover. “Say hi to Clover.”
“Umm hi.” She offered quietly. This is one of many moments where Patricia was super shy in public. You and Jack had debates about giving her more opportunities to socialize but to say Jack was paranoid was an understatement.
“My name is Clover. I like your glasses.” Clover offered starting to warm up to her surroundings and her new friend. Patricia was in awe of Clover. Even as a 4yr old she was so glamorous to Patricia as she whipped out a phone from her little bedazzled designer purse to show Patricia pictures of her last outing with her dad where she got to dance with LA Laker cheerleaders. Jack was nervously eyeing the interaction and seeing Patricia in awe of Clover made him even more nervous. Clover was cute and he knew NLE was a good dad, but the 2 girls couldn’t be growing up more differently.
“I like your nails and your purse and your phone and your hair is pretty.” Patricia complimented all at once nervously trying to make a connection with Clover. The 2 girls giggled with their heads together as Clover showed Patricia pics and vids from her last run of adventures with her dad and silly videos they made together. “Your daddy is silly like my daddy.” Patricia giggled.
“Don’t worry bruh she got a phone but it’s parented protected like a MF. It’s a phone for kids so they feel grown but don’t have access to anything bad yuh feel me?” NLE told Jack in his thick Memphis drawl.
“I hear you fam. I kinda got Patricia bubble wrapped.” He joked but it was completely the case. If you had seen that phone he knew you would bug him to let Patricia have it. You grew up less sheltered than Jack and had responsibilities at a young age and felt it helped be who you were today, but up until Jack was in first grade he just came off a farm and had never played a video game.
His childhood in Louisville revolved around his large and close knit family. It wasn’t until his teens where he started to see more of the world and was in his later teens when he started drinking and “partaking in substances” as he put it. Even his run with that was short lived and he rarely did anything like that anymore.
You on the other hand were left at 16 to raise your two younger half-siblings. It was either that or foster care for them as your mom battled addiction and their father disappeared. You never knew who your dad was. Today because of Jack they were now stable and living close by and your mom was getting help. Jack had truly saved her life. He was your knight in shining armour you didn’t know you needed doing everything on your own. As you sipped on afternoon mimosas with your mother in law, you opened IG to find Patricia and Clover the hot topic of the platform.
“Babe…are you sure about this?” You frantically texted your bae. Jack had told you Patricia was going to the game but you didn’t know the NLE part which brought a whole other level of attention to the outing.
“We good baby. Just chill out and enjoy your day.” Jack texted back and put his phone back in his pocket.
“Clover has a phone??? Is it for kids? Where did NLE get that for her? HELLO??!” You texted to no response from your husband. He knew a barrage of questions would be coming. You were always pushing for Patricia not to be so sheltered. “OMG!! Look at my baby girl laughing and making friends!!!” Jack???! HELLOOOO??!” But he was clearly enjoying the game and not answering.
“Y/N what’s going on?” Maggie said looking over at you scrolling IG and texting like a mad woman.
“LOOK” you simply said tearing up and showed her what Hip Hop Central on Instagram just posted of Patricia and Clover now dancing to the music being played at halftime which was their dad’s music and falling all over each other giggling. The headline was “NLE and Jack Harlow Babysit”
“NLE and Clover wear matching outfits?? How adorable!” Maggie exclaimed “That’s Patricia? She just met Clover! She’s not shy right now! and excuse me you don’t babysit your own child.” Maggie said annoyed at the headline giving you your phone back and rolling her eyes. “She’ll be talking your ear off when y’all get back home.”
“How could he miss that the net was fucking open!!” Jack angrily exclaimed.
“Your daddy said a bad word.” Clover said to Patricia as both girls looked at Jack in a way that made him apologize to them.
“Calm down bruh.” NLE said to Jack who was now pouting at his team’s inevitable loss.
“I have to pee.” Clover said suddenly and jumped up to go to the bathroom.
“Me too.” Said Patricia who didn’t really have to pee until her friend said she had to go.
“I’ll take them” Katt said who was Jack’s assistant “Come on girls” she said and the 2 little girls followed her. As they went to the bathroom inside the boxed in area reserved for Jack, Katt waited for them while she faced the window watching the game. One of the staff who had their hands full left the door to the boxed in area open with the intention of coming back with more things to set up for lunch for the celebrity guests. Clover spotting the open door whispered to Patricia
“Wanna play hide and seek on our daddies?”
“Sure!” Patricia said up for anything Clover suggested.
Clover and Patricia snuck out the door and hid in the back of a golf cart used to get around the venue quickly that had a little canopy where you could put a little cooler for drinks. They hunkered down in the tight space. When the cart started moving they sat there quietly in hushed laughter. Their daddies would have to look all over for them and they thought that would be so fun!
Katt got an uneasy feeling and checked the small bathroom to find the girls gone. Her heart raced as she frantically texted Jack trying not to make a scene for the jumbotron to capture. Jack’s phone was in his pocket and he was preoccupied with shouting at the field over his losing team. Katt panicked and decided she had to tell him. She approached him as calmly as she could with all eyes watching and asked him and NLE to step inside the box.
“What’s going on?” They asked seeing the look on her face.
“The girls they…they were in the washroom and then…I don’t know how they disappeared.” She said wringing her hands and in tears.
“WHAT THE FUCK!!” Jack said angrily “Katt how did this happen?”
“Geezus where is my baby?” NLE panicked and seeing the door to the suite open he ran out with Jack and venue security close on his heels. “Wait let me call Clover.” He said but there was no answer. Immediately all venue security and police were notified and an amber alert went out on all attendees phones.
“Jack Harlow and Mr. Bryson Potts’s daughters are missing. I repeat, we have 2 missions children in the building. Please keep your eyes out and report to authorities immediately if you see these 2 little girls.” The announcer said and showed a picture of both girls on the jumbotron they had to take for security purposes when they arrived that day. “They are Patricia Harlow 4 years old, and Clover Potts 4 years old.”
Everyone in the venue held their breath as some joined the search party. The game came to a grinding halt with players joining the hunt for the 2 girls. You unknowingly were enjoying horse back riding with the women in your husband’s family on their family farm. Your phone was buzzing in your tight riding pants but you ignored it taking in the breathtaking Kentucky countryside.
The golf cart carrying its precious cargo came to a stop and the driver walked off. Patricia and Clover feeling they were no longer moving decided to poke their heads out. They thought they would pretty much be in the same spot as they had little concept of how big the venue was. They panicked once they didn’t recognize anything or anyone around them.
NLE remembered Clover had a tracker on her device. He checked his phone and picked up their location. “Found them!!” He announced “They on the other side but they’re running to somewhere. We have to catch up to them but they are in the building!” He led the search party in their direction.
“Are you lost?” A lady asked the two girls who were now running to find their dads and crying.
“Where’s my daddy?” Patricia said to the lady who instantly recognized her when she looked down and saw her face. “Patricia Harlow?”
Patricia nodded. “And who’s your friend?” The lady asked who was just making her way back to her seat when she spotted the two girls frantically looking around them. “That’s my bestie Clover.” Patricia said hugging Clover tight.
“Oh my god ok everyone is looking for you guys!!” The lady said as she called her husband who notified security. As Jack and NLE hadn’t yet caught up with them but were close.
“We got their location they are safe and being held in place.” They heard over walkie talkies. The fathers breathed a sigh of relief. Jack had never felt such dread in his life. They put the 2 dads and Jack’s security in a golf cart and speedily got them to where the lady was holding Clover and Patricia. When they saw each other they ran to one another. Jack scooped up Patricia and NLE scooped up Clover hugging and kissing the girls fighting fully crying.
“What were you thinking?” Jack asked Patricia sternly and she began to cry
“I wanted to play hide and seek daddy I’m so sorry!!” Clover bawled. “It’s ok princess don’t ever scare daddy like that again ok?” NLE said softly looking into her big brown eyes.
Bruh, where’d you get that phone for Clover? Imma need that.” Jack said holding Patricia close who was now drained and resting on him.
“Allow me boss” Duane said reaching out for Patricia “You want some ice cream girls?” He said reaching for Clover’s hand trying to calm the girls down and distract them.
“Tell me where you got Duane and I’ll tell you where I got the phone.” NLE said smiling. He was so impressed with how Duane was a part of the family.
“Thank you everyone. The whole building gets free ice cream on me for all your help.” Jack said and when they announced it everyone at the game cheered. The girls were carried out onto the field on the shoulders of a couple players and they waved to the crowd happy to see them safe. Boy would Patricia have a lot to tell you when you met up with them at home.

spider boy — spider-man!midoriya izuku x reader
synopsis:   you’ve talked to your neighbor a few times before and have waved at him on campus. But you’ve noticed he keeps really weird hours, sometimes hearing him go into his apartment at ungodly hours of the night. So when spider-man enters your apartment one night, it’s easy for you to connect the dots from there.
content warnings: mentions of blood/injuries, hints of angst, hurt/comfort

part 1 of the spider boy series

“Spider-man does it again! Only three blocks from the UA university campus, the masked hero—”
“You’re a spider-man fan?”
You jumped, almost dropping your phone and falling off of the bench in the process.
“Midoriya! You scared me.”
He laughed and you paused the video you were watching, a news clip from this morning. He settled down beside you on the bench, taking a sip of his iced coffee as he did.
“Yeah, I guess I am a fan,” you said. “Campus PD sucks and I think it’s funny a spider guy is more reliant than all of them put together.”
You both shared a laugh.
“I have to get to class,” Midoriya sighed, not making any movements to get up from the bench. “How’s Moony?”
“She’s great, thanks for asking,” you said, smiling back at him. Because Midoriya was the definition of a perfect neighbor. He had introduced himself when you first moved in and he saw the small cat carrier with a little black kitten, Moony, inside of it. From there it had been a pleasant acquaintanceship between the two of you.
“I’ll see you later, then,” he said, really standing up this time. “Bye!”
You waved goodbye as he left, then turned back to the video.
A thief had been running loose on campus for the last week, snatching cell phones and wallets from unsuspecting students on their way to class. Campus PD had found the thief this morning, literally on their doorstep with a sticky note that had a spider sketch stuck on his face.
A smaller feat of Spider-Man’s, but a good one nonetheless.
During your first lecture of the day you could see other people were watching the same video and reading the accompanying article. It was the first time Spider-Man had acted so close to campus, practically on the grounds of it considering where he had turned in the thief.
The person in front of you had a Reddit post pulled up, and you had to bite your cheek to refrain from laughing as you read the title. Spider boy or whatever is totally a UA student. Here’s my proof!!!!
Finding the professor’s lecture increasingly dry and dull, you decided to pull up the Reddit tab on your own laptop so you could read it, too.
By the time the lecture was over you had read the entire post (it was surprisingly long) and all of the comments underneath it, half-convinced of the theory yourself. It made some reasonable arguments—Spider-Man stuck to the surrounding city, usually went around at night, rarely seen throughout the day—keeping with the schedule of a college student. Sticking to the surrounding city pointed to the fact that he lived near campus. And the latest crime he’d solved was the cherry on top, because the alerts about it had gone out to all campus members since the incidents were contained to the campus.
The dull lecture came with dull readings, which you idly flipped through later that night. It was nearing 1 am, but sleep had not yet found you, and even the reading was not putting you to sleep.
You must’ve dozed off on your tiny kitchen table, Moony curled up on the chair next to you, because her surprised meow and the sound of a door closing close by woke you up a few hours later. Your phone lit up with an email notification (professors were truly unhinged with their work hours) and you were able to see the time without lifting your head up from the table. 4 am.
The door that had closed and woken you and Moony up had been Midoriya’s, you realized even in your half-asleep state. Occasionally the sound would wake you up, but you never minded it much and usually rolled over and fell back asleep.
This time you had to drag yourself over to your bed, and you could vaguely hear Midoriya moving around next door. What business he had this early in the morning you never knew. He seemed pretty normal, and you always assumed he was fond of late library study sessions. Even if it was not exactly exam season. But then again, he was a biochem major, you mused.
You fell asleep wondering about this and woke up five hours later to the sound of your blaring alarm. It snapped you awake, enough to hear a thud from next door. Did Midoriya fall out of bed?
The day passed as usual. You went to class, took half-hearted notes (it was hard to focus at this point in the semester—everyone was already burnt out) came home and ate dinner with Moony, and cuddled up on the couch together to do your readings.
This time you were ready to pass out outside of the warm embrace of your bed, so you’d done your nightly routine and brought over blankets to the couch, ready for sleep to come whenever it was ready.
The sound that woke you up this time was much louder. And Moony hissed.
She never hissed.
You froze from your curled-up position on the couch, eyes still heavy with sleep and senses scrambling to catch up with your brain and racing heart. The coffee table was right across from you, and by some miracle, you’d been sipping on a lemonade earlier—one in a glass bottle.
As swiftly as you could, you untangled yourself from the blankets and grabbed the lemonade bottle, wielding it in front of you like a sword.
It slipped from your grasp when you saw who was standing in front of you, next to your open window you always kept closed, scared Moony would climb out.
As if on reflex, as if he expected you to drop your weapon, Spider-Man shot a web just as it slipped from your fingers, catching it in his hands before you could even register you had dropped it.
Moony, who had been very annoyed at being woken up just a minute ago, was now rubbing her head on his shins affectionately.
“Moony,” you whispered. “Get away from him.”
“It’s okay!” Spider-Man said, mirroring your whisper. “I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
You narrowed your eyes. “Then why did you break into my apartment?” You looked around for your phone, or another potential weapon. Instead, your gaze found the small digital clock you kept on a shelf near the door, the bright green numbers clearing away the fogginess of sleep.
It was 4am.
You could not help the gasp that escaped you.
“Midoriya?”
The effect was instantaneous. Spider-Man’s entire body language changed, that much you could tell, even in the dark. He took a step away from you, back toward the window, shoulders tense.
“What?” he said. Trying hard to keep his voice steady, even deepening it a little. But you knew it was him.
“Did you think this was your apartment?” You were connecting the dots now. “This is why you always come back so late.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, inching towards the window. “I just got a little lost. Thought this place was empty.”
“You’re bleeding,” you said, pointing at the gash in his arm as though he had not noticed it himself. “Why’re you bleeding?”
Moony meowed, as though echoing your question. She was still close to him, and leaned forward to rub her head against his shin again.
This seemed to break him—his shoulders drooped and he let out a long exhale. He reached up and pulled the mask off, and you gasped again.
The left side of his face was covered in bruises, his eye starting to swell a bit. He looked like he was on the verge of tears, glancing down at Moony.
“Smart cat. She recognized me.” You winced and instinctively moved toward him when he tried to smile and grimaced at the action.
“Sit down, please,” you said, remembering to speak quietly. “You can’t die in my apartment. You can’t.”
“I won’t,” he said, letting you manhandle him into sitting on the couch. “Promise.”
“If you thought this was your apartment you’re definitely concussed,” you said, reaching up to move his curls aside, careful not to touch his face. The bruises covered his entire left side, also the side his arm was bleeding. “What happened to you?”
You snatched your hand away when he realized he was frozen, eyes to the side where your hand was.
“I got thrown into a wall,” he said, smiling again. A smaller grimace this time. “I’m really sorry.”
“You’re sorry for being thrown into a wall?” You shuffled to the kitchen to grab the tiny first aid kit you kept there. It was dusty and unused and consisted mainly of bandaids, something you started laughing at a little hysterically as you opened it on the couch, in between you and Midoriya. He’d leaned back onto the couch, breathing evened out. He was lying so still you thought he was sleeping, until he turned his head to see what you were laughing at.
“I only have bandaids,” you said, still laughing a little. “I’m sorry.”
“Oh,” he said. “Oh, I didn’t mean…” he started laughing. Quietly, then a little louder until you were both giggling and suppressing loud laughs.
“It’s okay,” he said, catching his breath again. “Can you help me get to my place? I’m used to patching myself up.”
It took five minutes, but eventually, you both managed to get out your front door, coaxing Moony to stay inside. Midoriya had one of his arms draped around your shoulder, keeping him upright. He had reassured you plenty of times as you both shuffled out the door that he was fine, he had been through worse. Which only made you feel worse.
His apartment was the exact same layout as yours, though a little messier, which he apologized for. There were notes all over his kitchen table, his couch was covered in blankets. You had a feeling he was prone to falling asleep all over his apartment like you did.
“Thank you,” he said once he had settled down on his couch. “I’m really sorry, again.”
“I know,” you said, sitting down beside him. You stared at the clock directly across from you, above his small TV. “I’m sorry for figuring out who you are.”
Another small laugh from him. “S’okay.” he shifted to look at you, and you mirrored him. It would have felt awkward being this close to someone you knew more in passing a day ago, but you felt as though this entire experience had automatically made the two of you friends. A trauma bond, of sorts. “You won’t tell anyone?”
You smiled back at him. “Promise.”
You didn’t remember getting back to your apartment, only that it took a lot of convincing on Midoriya’s part. The second you woke up (on your couch) you rushed to get out the door and knock on Midoriya’s until he opened, if anything to confirm you had not dreamed anything that had happened. But before you could get your slippers on, you saw a small note on the floor in front of the door.
Two spiders drawn holding hands, with “friends?” written underneath.
You slid it back under his door with your own addition — a drawing of a cat and “friends” written underneath his question.
——— * * * ———
“Trauma bond?”
“Yeah,” you said, shoving at his shoulder and ignoring his fake wince. “Am I wrong?”
“No,” he agreed, petting a meowing Moony in his lap. He was frowning down at her, and you had been around him long enough to know something was wrong.
It had been over a month since the break-in incident (which Midoriya was still apologizing for) and you had grown used to each other’s company. It had started off small—seeing him in the library during the day, studying quietly next to him. Stifling your laughter when he slid a spider doodle across the table to you.
After that, you noticed him around campus more often. You had always greeted him when he crossed your path, stopping to make small talk. But now you actually talked about things of substance. Setting up study sessions, inviting him over to play with Moony, exchanging recipes and even starting to cook at each other’s apartments.
“Is my pasta not good?” you said. Moony meowed, echoing your question from his lap.
“It could use some pepper,” he said, smiling teasingly at you. “No, it’s good. Just a rough night.”
“Wanna talk about it?” you said.
“S’okay,” he said. “We’re trauma bonded enough.” You felt a pang of guilt at the sadness in his tone.
“Midoriya—”
“Thank you for the pasta,” he said. “I can help with the dishes.”
“I’m sorry,” you said. “You know we’re friends friends, right?”
He nodded. “I’m messing with you.”
“You little shit!” he laughed as you set your dishes down in the sink, shoving him slightly. He smiled slyly at you. He seemed like the perfect boy next door, but he was really a little shit. And he was the perfect boy next door.
“I haven’t heard you come back late in a while,” you said. He turned to look at you from his place at the sink, eyebrows raised.
“You wait up for me?”
“No!” you said indiginantly. “It just used to wake us up.”
“Really? I’m sorry.”
“S’okay,” you said. “But you have to wake me up if you’re hurt really bad, okay? Even if it’s just to sit with you.”
A small noise of acknowledgement from Midoriya.
“What was that?”
“Promise.”
Satisfied, you got up from your place at the table, letting him finish up the dishes. “Are you going out tonight?”
“Yeah,” he said. “Sorry in advance about the early morning wake up call.”
He still would not tell you where he went. But the news reports the next day served as the answers to your questions. A crime solved here, a criminal turned in there. The Spider-Man news page, ran by dedicated fans, was bookmarked on your computer and one of your most visited tabs. On nights when you couldn’t sleep and didn’t know where he was, you would refresh it every few minutes, waiting for an update.
Sometimes he would go during the day, and when you would get back from class he would be there on your couch with Moony, napping. You would sit on the opposite end and wait for him to wake up, then decide on what to make for lunch together. Not talking about the new bruise on his arm or the new cut on his leg. If he brought it up you knew it was okay to talk about it, but usually you both talked about normal topics. Avoiding the giant spider in the room.
“All done!” he said, falling down on the couch beside you. Reaching to pet Moony, who was cuddled up on your lap. Arm muscles flexing, hands softly running through Moony’s fur. It was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore how jacked he was. Especially when he was literally always stripping in your apartment, changing from his suit into his regular clothes. Letting you sneak glances at his back, his chest.
“Take a nap,” you blurted. “If you’re going to be out tonight. You need to rest.”
“I will,” he said, smiling up at you. “Don’t worry.”
“I’m not!” you said, huffing. “You better not visit me tonight. I expect you to kick ass and come back with no injuries.”
“‘Kay,” he said. “See you tomorrow?” You nodded and watched him dramatically sigh, throwing his head back on the couch before getting up and shuffling to the door.
The rest of your evening was spent anxiously trying to distract yourself. There was a nagging feeling in the back of your head, in the pit of your stomach. After finishing your homework and realizing it was hours before your usual bedtime, you cleaned your apartment. Reorganized, moved things around.
You decided to settle on the couch for the night. Better place to hear Midoriya come back.
The sound that jolted you awake a couple hours later was louder than usual, and it woke you up quicker. A quick glance at your clock let you know it was only 1am.
“Midoriya?” you said quietly, sitting up. “You okay?”
He was standing near your window, at almost the exact same spot as a month before, when he had first broken in.
“No,” he said. Voice hoarse and almost too quiet for you to hear.
You were up and leading him over to the couch in an instant. His mask was already off, clutched in between his fingers
“Are you hurt?” you said, patting down his arms and running your fingers over his face softly, scared to touch a bruise or aggravate a cut. A shake of his head.
You gently took the mask from him, setting it down on the coffee table with one hand, the other gripping his hands tightly. “Want to talk about it?”
He nodded, squeezing your hands back. “Later.”
“Okay,” you said, scooting closer to him on the couch so your shoulders pressed together. “I’m here, okay? It’s okay.”
You were ready when his shoulders started shaking and he slid into your hug, staining your shirt with his tears. You ran your hands through his hair, rubbing your fingers along the nape of his neck. Repeating the phrase over and over until it felt like you were trying to convince yourself of the same thing.
The bruises were on his side this time—no cuts deep enough to warrant him going back to his apartment to patch himself up. You helped him get his suit off slowly. The tears hadn’t stopped, and yours had started fifteen minutes after his. It hurt to see him like this and not know how to help. Knowing all you could do was help him get back to his apartment and keep his secret.
“Can I stay?” he said. He was holding the top half of his suit to his chest, hugging it.
“Yeah, course you can,” you said. “I’ll get you some clothes.”
Moony walked out of your room with an annoyed meow. She had been sleeping, but once she spotted Midoriya she happily sauntered over, already purring.
Once he had changed into the clothes his eyes started to droop, and you started convincing him to sleep in your room. He kept shaking his head, until he finally told you, “Don’t want to be alone.”
“Okay, I’ll stay with you,” you said. Slipped out so easily you had no time to realize you had said it until he nodded and you were walking into your room and settling under the covers, Midoriya turning to face you, lashes wet with tears.
“I’m not leaving,” you said, reaching to intertwine your fingers with his. “You’re okay. We’re okay.”
He blinked slowly at you, sleep making his eyes heavy. “Promise?”
“Promise.”
