Future Hope - chapter 1.5 - Practice Makes Perfect

Our heroes didnt get their powers and knew from night to day how to manage them, especially those who had physical changes to their body. Our soon-to-be heroes were all reunited in Maria's house, they had planed to spend the afternoon practing and exploring their new limits and abilities, all helping eitch other.

They decided since Griff had the biggest change, they would focus on him first. At the moment they were out in backyard, eitch one giving suggestions on what to begin first.

"Pick us all up at once with your new muscles!" Said Muffin excitedly. "That's still too light! Pick us all up plus Maria's car" Said Spike, chewing once again on a bubblegum.

"You all leave Hellride out of this!" Maria responded angrily. "That car was expensive as fuck and I refuse to go back to a life of Ubers!" She crossed her arms, indignified.

"You named your car?" Kip answered from high up a tree branch, as cats do. "I name all my belongings, what of it?" Maria answered. "And they're all cool names, too".

"Hellride? Really?" Spiked scoffed. "Because she rides fast as Hell! Look can we get back on track and find something for Griff to test his strenght?!" Maria answered nervously with a touch of embarrassment.

"Unless we find an Indiana Jones boulder for him to spin on his finger like a damn basketball we arent gonna get any damn progress!" Spike shouted back.

Maria sighed and shook her head. "I hate it when you have a point.." Griff nervously scratched the back of his head. "There must be something we can do.." He quietly mumbled out.

"I got it!" Muffin shouted, they all turned to face her. "I forgot Im a fairy! I can just poof something up!" She said excitedly. Everyone stared at her with either a confused or shocked look.

"..How... Do you FORGET that you're a fairy?!" Spike blurted out nervously. "You have fucking wings! How does one forget they have huge pink glittery wings?!"

Muffin just shrugged.

Maria smiled wide. "OK Muffin, give us something huge and heavy for Griff to use!" Muffin nodded and grabbed her wand which had a muffin on the tip. "Wand cook, beat and bake! Give us a big large and tasty cupcake!" She waved her wand and out appeared from a bunch of pink glittery smoke, a nearly two-story house tall chocolate cupcake.

"... Why a cupcake..?" Blink asked as she peeked behind her mask, in slight awe and wanting to secretly a bite out of it. "I can only make sweets!" Muffin said with a shy tone. "Im not a fighter like you guys, I only want to make people happy and eat candy!"

"That is certainly the biggest pastry I've ever seen! So large and beautiful, I bet tasty as well!" "Not to mention DIABETIC AS HELL!!! We could die from a heart attack eating that! Or worse, we could get fat! Even fatter! And become even uglier then we already are! This is too overwealming I need a nap!"

Rooko and Rooki suddenly spoke, almost taking everyone off guard on how their friend Rook is suddenly two split personalities now based on the Youtube character ENA, one is always happy while the other is always sad, and depending on the situation they can go Manic or Miserable.

"OK Griff, show us what you can do!" Maria shouted excitedly. Without missing a second, Griff bent over and gripped the edge of the massive cupcake, after struggling a bit he slowly but surely, lifted the entire thing over his head, smiling proudly.

His friends cheered and applauded proudly. Feeling satisfied, he dropped the cupcake and dusted the chocolate crumbs off his hands and fur. "Yokusei!" He shouted, and with a naruto-like smoke poof, he turned back to his human self. Maria ran and hugged him tightly, which Griff embraced and hugged back with a slight twirl.

"Griff you were amazing!!" Maria said with a proud tone, Griff slightly blushed pink at the small punk girl and her excitement. "Oh shucks, it was nothing.." He said with a shy tone.

"Well, and seems we concluded Griffin's training." Togekiss said as they took a sip of tea. "He jump twice as high as a two-story house, his punches and kicks can knock down brick walls and possibly more if we werent limited on objects to test it with, he can hear twice as much then a dog could with his ears, and his sense of smell is impecable. Truly Griff is a strong asset to our team."

"I can only train my powers at night.." Said Spooks, holding an umbrella to protect her from the sun, now that it injures her. "Muffin's power is only sweet making. Togekiss has exceptional I.Q and can see simulations in the future like Garnet in Steven Universe, along with their strong telekenisis, and Kip simply draws whatever she desires, whether alive or not and it becomes a reality... That means it's Rook's turn to show us what she can do" She finished.

"Wonderful! It's our time to shine!" "I-I-I not ready! Everyone's gonna laugh at us! I-I might piss myself in fear!" "Oh pull yourself together dear! Our friends wont laugh at us!" "How do we know that?! They're just waiting to correct us on a dumb mistake!!!"

Rook's body shook and twitched as her eyes turned to static, suddenly her entire eyes turned black with a blue iris, she turned Miserable.

"They're gonna laugh and point at our foolish selves, we're gonna be so embarrassed that we'll wish that the Earth will swallow us whole and just fucking kill us now!! Go ahead! Laugh at us and our misfortune!!!"

"ooh shit" Maria said. "can someone calm her down?"

Rook's eyes change to regular as her Miserable side went away. "No need my good Queen! We are completly fine! Now prepare to be dazzled as we show you all what we can do!" q

Rook pulled out a harry potter-like wooden wand, waved it around. "Bloom and Blossom and protect who I love! Rise my pretties, rise high and above!" Rooki shot an orange light at the grass, which made dozens of flowers bloom and grow around Spike and Blink.

"This is only one of my tricks! It's a shield that protects them from almost anything! My main weakness is fire, because while plants are beautiful, they are also sadly very, very flammable"

"Cool." Said Spike before using his bat to aggressivly hit the flowers and the vines aside so he and Blink could leave.

"M-M-My turn I guess!" Rook took hold of the wand and waved it in circles. "Razzle Dazzle Shine and Show, make their body move it low!" Rooko shot a blue light at Spooks, which made unwillingly and uncontrolably start dancing and as the spell said, make her go low.

"O-OH GOD SOMEONE MAKE IT STOP I DONT LIKE HOW MY BUTT IS MOVING THIS MUCH!!" She shouted in desperation as she made a split and moved it even lower.

"M-My deal is with music! I-It works as a way of distraction o-or hypnosis and it lasts for 30 minutes un-le-less I say otherwise! I-I know it's a sucky power!"

"OK COOL CAN I STOP DANCING PLEASE IM GETTING A CRAMP!!!" Yelled Spooks, practically begging. Rooko flicked her wand and Spooks fell on the ground, panting. "OH MY POOR HAMSTRINGS THEY ACHE!!" She yelled in utter pain, meanwhile Maria and Spike were absolutely losing it.

"O-OH GOD MY STOMACH HURTS-" Said Spike in between laughter.

"OK you guys cool it" Said Blink. "It's our turn to practice now. We're the only ones who use regular weapons." She said drawing her sword and positioning her mask back in place.

"O-OK! OK!" Maria said getting up, she pulled out a small staff and whipped it, making it stretch out wide into a full, large red and black scythe, with a rose print on the blade. Spike spun his bat and spat his gum out.

"So. Who's ass Im kicking first?" Said Spike. "Wait on second thought this might be unfair." Said Blink. "Me and Maria had blades while Spike has a bat, maybe we should-"

Before she could finish, Spike swung his bat and hit Blink sword, knocking it out of her hand before kicking her back at the ground. Blink fell back hard before she could even process what happen, dumbfounded but angry, she snarled. "Oh it's on now Motherfucker." She extended her hand and the sword flew back to her hand, as she charged towards Spike, who moved out of the way as soon as Blink swung her sword, which if he hadnt been for Maria's scythe, would have sliced her right up.

"Dude! Chill! This is a pratice!" Maria spoke as both of their blades were against eitch other. Blink hopped and flipped over her and landed on a tree branch, croutching like a ninja. She put her hands together and in a small puff of smoke and disappeared. Spike and Maria were back to back, ready to counterattack Blink, what they didnt expect was for her to attack from underground.

Buring up from the dirt, she got both of them off their feet and charged after Spike, who barely managed to regain his balance before his using bat his block Blink's sword. A back and forth of clash-clings-and-clangs between metal begun, one attacking the other but eitch blocking every attack again and again.

Spike ducked a sword slash and roundhouse kick Blink's leg, which was effective since she's practically a ninja. She backflipped back on her feet and kept attacking swiftly. But a sudden scythe blade cut in between them, stopping the fight.

"That's enough!!!" Maria shouted. "You both are gonna end up hurting yourselves or eitch other! im ending it now!!"

"Oh what the hell dude?!" Blink shouted indignified. "I was about to beat him!!" "Oh please." Answered Spike. "Was that the best you could do? Sakura could do a better job kicking my ass" He scoffed. They began to argue loudly, genuinely angry at eitch other.

"THAT"S ENOUGH!!!!" Maria shouted, making them, and everyone else look at her.

"It doesnt matter would win that fight! This was a practice and not a competition!! The point of us being a team and getting powers in the first place was for all of us to make the world a better place, but the only way that can happen is if all of us work together!! As a team!!!"

They stood in silence, listening to her talk and set them straight.

"As cheesy as that sounds, it's true!! We shouldnt fight eitch other like this, you're not just my friends, we're all friends with eitch other! We all go along well and we know that, that's why I got you all together, because no one can bond better in a team then all of us together!!!"

"... She's right." Togekiss added, walking towards them. "We all started as simple individuals with free time on a website, but we all shared common interests, we grew closer.. And suddenly like that, we all became friends.. A family, if you will."

"We take care of eitch other and look out for one another." Said Spooks.

"Just like how you all did for me.. When I almost died. Almost died because of the shit and violent world we live in." Maria said.. With a slight crack in her voice.

"You're bringing in the same violence that almost killed me.. So please.. Please stop fighting.. We're all in this together.. Right..?"

Spike and Blink dropped their weapons and hugged Maria, and everyone else joined in as well.

"You're right, we're sorry Queen." Said Spike. "We got overwhealmed and we didnt mean it. We wont fight again, because you're right." Added Blink.

"We only have eitch other in this world, and if we want to change it we have to stick together, just like you said." Spike said one more time.

"And we wont let you down.. We promise.." Griff finished, with everyone agreeing with what he said.

And so they stayed for a moment, embraced within eitch other in a group hug. A family isnt perfect, there will be disagreements, but a good bond will always overcome those disagreements, and that's what they had, a good bond.

A bond that's practically unbreakable and untaintable. A bond that will soon be ready, and fight together to make the world a better place.

A bond that will the world's Future Hope..

The Outlaw and the Treasure Hunter - Chapter 17 - Surgery

The Count's hooves clattered along the cobbles of St. Denis. People jumped out of the way, this way and that. Dutch refused to slow down, and was cursed by anyone who had the misfortune to get in his way.

Arriving at the doctors office, he jumped off his horse and ran inside.

The receptionist, recognised him immediately, and ushered him through.

He charged into the office, startling Nathaniel.

"We have him, a friend is bringing him in. I rode ahead." Dutch gasped, out of breath.

Nathaniel, poured a glass of water and handed it to Dutch.

"Steady, Mr Van Der Linde. I don't want two patients this evening," he joked. "What about my brother, where is he?"

Dutch sipped the water, slowly regaining his composure. "I sent word to Hosea, he should be with us shortly." he hesitated, "may I ask, what is it you intend to do?"

Nathaniel, took a deep breath. "I'm going to relieve the pressure, on Mr Morgan's brain. To do this I will need to drill a hole in his skull."

Dutch stared at Nathaniel, in disbelief. "Does Hosea know this?" he demanded.

Nathaniel, sighed and nodded. "I told you it was dangerous, but its the only way."

Dutch sighed, "I know you said it was dangerous, I didn't realise..." He hesitated, unable to find the right words.

Nathaniel, put his hand on Dutch's shoulder. "I understand, you didn't realise it would be so...Invasive. If there was any other way, then I would do it. But this is his only chance."

Dutch nodded. "I'm just not sure if..."

Nathaniel interrupted, "No Mr Van Der Linde, you won't need to be present for the procedure. In fact it will be better if neither you, or my brother are." He added.

Hosea arrived, at roughly the same time as Charles. If it hadn't been for the gag, which Charles had applied, halfway through the journey, then likely the whole of St. Denis would have heard Arthur.

Charles carried him into the building, whilst Hosea opened the doors.

Thankfully, the doctor had seen all his patients for the day. Seeing Arthur, being manhandled into the surgery, wouldn't have done a great deal for the doctors clientele.

Charles, put Arthur into the doctors chair, and held him still. The doctor, put a pad, over his nose and mouth. Arthur soon stopped struggling, and seemed to sleep.

"What was that?" Dutch asked.

"Chloroform," Nathaniel replied. "It will keep him asleep, whilst I perform the surgery. Now I suggest you gentlemen wait outside. This won't be pretty."

Hosea, looked at his brother, "I'd like to stay, if I may?" he requested.

Nathaniel shook his head, "I'm sorry, but I must insist that you all wait outside."

Hosea stared at Nathaniel for a few moments, then nodded his head.

The three men left the room. As the door closed behind them, they heard a click, as the door was locked.

Izzy rode out of Valentine, not sure where she was headed. As she rode along the track, she passed several cabins. Many seemed to be deserted. She wondered if she could find an abandoned cabin, and make her home there. She thought about her house. That's exactly what would happen to that, she was sure.

She'd never really noticed before, just how many empty places there were. She'd travelled around a fair bit before. First with her father, then on her own. Never really bothered to notice what was going on around her. Too intent with the final destination. Funny when you didn't have one, how you noticed everything, so much more. Then she thought of O'Creagh's run. The little cabin on the lake. She wondered if that was deserted. She'd mentioned to Javier, how she could see herself living there. If it was deserted, it would be perfect. She pushed Duke on, a little harder. Now she had a purpose, things seemed a little clearer.

Dutch sat with his head in his hands. He couldn't believe he was allowing this man, this doctor, to do this to Arthur.

Hosea tried to comfort him. "This procedure, I've heard its quite common in other countries." he paused, "Its called trepanation."

Dutch glared at Hosea, "I don't give a fuck what its called, He's drilling a hole in Arthur's head! How can you be so calm?" he yelled.

"I'm just as worried as you Dutch. But shouting isn't going to change anything." He hesitated, "Tell me what happened, in Valentine, with Izzy?"

Dutch dragged his fingers through his hair, "there's nothing to tell, she left me. Javier was with her, so I went to Arthur. She flipped. She had some insane idea, that I'd used her as bait. Hell, I didn't even know she was gonna be there. We didn't know that's where Arthur would be, until Charles tracked him!"

"Have you any idea where she went?" Hosea asked.

Dutch shook his head, "I asked her where she was going, she said it was none of my business. Maybe she'll come back for her stuff. Then maybe I can talk to her, I don't know!"

Hosea, came and sat next to Dutch. "I'm sorry, I know you cared for her. I thought she felt the same about you."

Dutch sighed, sadness clouded his eyes, "I did Hosea, and I thought she felt the same. I guess I was wrong."

The sound of a lock clicking, brought both men out of their thoughts, as they stared at the door, as it slowly opened.

Nathaniel stood at the door, his shirt sleeves rolled up, sweat dripping off his brow.

"Its done," he sighed. "He'll need to be sedated, for a few days." He opened the door wide, so that they could see inside.

Dutch and Hosea, slowly stood up, and walked quietly into the surgery. Charles followed them, a few steps behind, to give them some space.

Arthur lay in the chair, he was strapped onto it, with leather straps around his wrists and ankles. His head leant back. His head was shaved, and a small square of gauze padding lay on the front of his head, just above where the hairline, would have been, had his head not been shaved.

"When will you know?" Dutch asked, "If it's worked."

Nathaniel took a deep breath. "when we bring him round, we'll know. You'll know. One of you will have to be here, when we do."

"What about the hole, in his head?" Hosea asked.

Assuming its successful, I've made arrangements for a metal plate. It will cover the hole. If its not successful, then I would suggest that due to his violent nature, you should turn him into the sheriff." Nathaniel replied.

Dutch glared at Nathaniel. "That ain't gonna happen. If it ain't successful, we'll deal with it, quickly."

Nathaniel nodded. "I understand, but I have no reason to think, that it wont be fully successful," he added.

Hosea, glanced between Dutch and Charles. "I'll stay, you should go back. Dutch, you should try and find Izzy. Check her house maybe."

Dutch looked at Arthur. He looked so peaceful. As though he were just having a nap.

"I'll be back in a couple of days. Don't do anything until I get back." he demanded.

Izzy, reached O'Creagh's run, without any incidents. She passed a few people on the way, who waved a good morning, to which she waved back. She hoped that the Cabin was deserted. If not, she would have to camp out somewhere. Not that she hadn't done that before, but the run in with the wolves, had made her a little nervous. Having said that, as long as she had a good fire, she knew that should keep most wild animals at bay.

As she approached the cabin, she noticed, there were no horses hitched, or in the little corralled area by the side of the cabin.

She hitched Duke to one of the posts, and pushed the cabin door. It gently swung open.

She called inside, "Hello, is anyone home."

When she got no reply she walked in, and checked out the interior.

Once she'd found that there was no one home, she took her supplies from her horse, and closed the door, and latched it.

She checked the cupboards. They were fairly well stocked. She wondered if the owners were just out. Hopefully if that was the case, they wouldn't be too angry, at finding her there.

Because of this, she decided to cook some of her own supplies.

There was also a bed in one of the other rooms in the cabin. She decided to wait until nightfall, before getting some rest.

As she sat at the kitchen table, eating. Her thoughts, wandered once again, to Dutch.

Looking down at the shirt she was wearing, she took it off and threw it in the corner. She would never get over him, if she kept smelling his scent.

But it was a comfortable shirt. She would be stupid to throw it away. In the morning she would take it to the lake, and wash it, and with it wash away any thoughts of him, if that was even possible.

As darkness envelopped the cabin, Izzy went and lay on the bed. She was unable to settle, or fall asleep. She grabbed the shirt from the floor, where it had landed. Clutching it to her chest, she laid down on the bed, until she drifted off to sleep.

Dutch and Charles rode back to camp that night. It was well after midnight, when they arrived back.

Several of the gang, were still awake. Waiting to see if there was any news of Arthur, or of Izzy.

Dutch had hoped, that Izzy might have changed her mind, and come 'home'. He soon realised, that this was not going to be the case, so he retired to his tent. He sat there for several minutes, looking at the chest, and the desk. A constant reminder, of what was now missing.

He eventually closed his eyes. It was difficult to sleep. He had got so used to feeling her body next to him. He realised, too late, that it wasn't just him, that had provided comfort to her. But also her, to him.

You can give advice? O.O PLEASE TELL ME YOUR STRATEGY FOR BRAVE VERONICA.

Brave Veronica, hm? Well, personally my strategy is this guy walking in her range and taking 0 damage from one to four times (depending on dance and speed), then kills her/holds her attention while others can get the Aether. It actually works but… this answer may (more like, it will) not suit like… the majority? So here’s other options:

First of all, what do we need to do with B!Vero? Her huge range will make it difficult to (safely) kill her from a distance, so logical decision would be bait her closer to your team and kill her there… and she, like all staves, has a dazzling effect… BUT. You dont have to kill her the exact second she approaches you. It’s very possible to survive one-two (or even three-four, if she gets repo’d back and danced) of her attacks without much damage and kill her on the subsequent player phase very easily, because of how frail she is near enemies, and all her attacks were charging your special...

“Normal” Veronica of a player, who put her in a def team cause she’s “meta” has 49 attack and 36 speed (neutral IV + 3att A). “Super-invested” (+att IV, +10, atk/spd solo A, AND dragonflowers) Veronica has 60 attack and 47 speed… Usually you’ll be seeing something in-between. With only 54 attack on average and no access to offensive specials - that’s something a good number of heroes can take. If baited at max range - she is also away from her team - no goads/drives.

Note: with her abysmal HP - any visible buff she can receive is an invitation to panic ploy. Since there’s a lot of panic tools in AR now (Panic ploy users, panic manor, Aversa in particular) visible buffs on defensive teams arent popular (unless they use a rally/restore+ trick, watch out for that, but that’s -1 dancer turn already), but if she has a visible - you can panic it, go ahead. She has silly res too so all other ploys like atk ploy will easily land too. It applies to every other enemy too, but Veronica in particular is easily ploy-able.

What heroes we can use for this?

Disclaimer: I’m not saying these are the only characters that can be used to bait and kill Veronica, but rather something popular/requiring lower investment.

Eir. Just free vanilla Eir. She was inroduced as a pretty much forced memeber of every raiding party during light season and beyond, and she has pretty strong stats and skills to deal with Veronica. Her base res with Lifjaberg is 34 (can be further buffed by allies and/or S slot), her B skill effectively halves damage dealt by staff users, and even that damage will be partially (or fully, since far from every Vero will double Eir) healed after combat. There isnt much Veronica can do against Eir in any given situation. I personally know people who were literally saved from doom when they found out Eir can bait Veronica.

Raven mages are very effective against Veronica, since she cant inherit Cancel Affinity, like some sly archers do. Raven mages with Triangle Adept are hard counters to Veronica, since they needs only around 35 res to take 0 damage from Veronica (or close to that) even after she applies her staff effect, and in turn need very low attack (like 40) to OHKO her on their phase.

Any mage you inherit a raven tome and TA onto can fit the bill, as long as they have at least ~20 starting Res on them (Res tactic/class buff on ally + Distant Defence SS will bring their res to 35 range) which isnt too much. Gronnraven+ users are preffered meta-wise, because along with Veronica and other colorless threats, they will be able to take on blues like Reinhardt. But other colors are viable too! After all people like Lilina and Lewyn exist too.

Units that naturally come with Raven tomes are: Cecilia (I used her to cheese through lower tiers, where VeroLynHardt was a constant thing, pretty solid unit), F/M!Robin (both have prf raven which will help a lot in tactic teams that dont have many spare slots for visible buffs, although F!Robin is preferred for Green color), newly refined Sophia, Lyon and Henry (although less reliable due to very low attack. might get a refine soon). But again - any mage with above 20 res (I’d suggest also having above 20 def too for archer/dagger purposes) can run a Raven (PA!Inigo is a popular choice, since he is green and can also double as a dancer)

Magic tanks (of any color again) will have little problems baiting Veronica with little harm too, since dedicated PP mages actually hurt more than her (but can be killed with counterattacks ay). There’s a big variety of heroes that would fit in this category. My boy Julius actually sits here, with his atrocious magic damage soaking abilities, but I’d also note ranged heroes like Leo, Micaiah, Deirdre, Kliff, F!Morgan, Innes, Felicia, W!Ceclila, built enemy phase, and others, whose weapons directly reduce damage or have a lot of res, making stacking res an option. Double distant def and guard bow/serpent tome with a visible res buff from an ally will bump up your res by so much that having 30 base may entirely/almost nullify damage from Veronica.

While ranged units typically have more res, Dragon units are often built into mixed tanks with lots of defences, and 4* ones are also popular merge projects so chances are you might have one merged. W!Fae is a res monster, Myrrh with her prf hold a special place in my heart, others with ~30 base res like Fae can be brough up and used as mixed/res tanks too, which should cover Veronica. Other melee units with high res and useful skills like Sheena and Fjorm can be of use too, even if some of them dont run DC/DC weapons because you arent counterattacking anyway. BUT if you have a wall between her and your melee unit - you’ll have to use something ranged to actually go for a kill. (not that it’s too bad)

Head-on method - Nailah and her Null-C-Disrupt. Extra and premium, but … also worth mentioning.

Of course each different situation requires a unique approach in terms of positioning, sometimes you can go around some buildings and assassinate Veronica first, sometimes you can avoid combat with Veronica on first combat phase and bait someone else, so on so forth, but here’s just some general ideas that may help.

Also another note: Double savage blow (that Veronicas often run) doesnt affect the target, so if you dont put anyone within 2 spaces of Veronica’s target - no one will take splash damage. Eir’s C skill heals everyone as long as they took equal amount of damage, so sometimes it may be not that bad.

About Restore+: if enemy Veronica has Restore+ and her ally in range has any negative status effect - she will prioritize healing them instead of attacking someone she cant kill (or significantly damage, unfortunately I dont know the details but the idea is that it’s not a unit you want to bait her with). You will need to get the enemy formation moving your way by killing/damaging or baiting someone else, unless number of enemy units with negative status effects (excluding veronica) She will start healing statuses even before you trigger the rest of enemy movement so be careful for her not to catch you off guard with shifted range, because a dancer will dance her after she heals! The rest of enemies wont move before you interact with them anyway. This applies to any staff user with Restore+.

5. Group joins together to scare the youngest, who is always trying to scare them.

“Today is the day,” Taeyeon said, slamming her hand down on the table in front of her. Sunny jumped at the sudden sound and looked up from her book and Tiffany almost dropped her phone. The rest of the girls looked up from their food, Sooyoung with her chopsticks halfway to her mouth.

“What?”

“Today is Halloween. This is the day we get back at Seohyun for all the pranks she keeps pulling on us.” Tiffany turned off her phone and leaned forward, wary, but interested.

“What are you suggesting?” She asked. Taeyeon grinned, and Sooyoung ate the rest of her noodles, eyes wide in anticipation.

“I suggest that we do something to scare her. It’s Halloween, and its all in good fun. We’ll call it…. The Unnies Revenge.” Sunny laughed and put down her book.

“That’s such a lame name. But I’m in.”

“Me too,” said Jessica, raising her hand a bit. Hyoyeon and Yuri nodded along in agreement.

“What are we going to do, though?” Asked Yoona, leaning back in her chair. “Like, are we going to make her do a haunted house, or…?” Taeyeon put a finger to her chin, thinking.

“I didn’t actually think that far ahead. I was hoping that all of you would have some ideas.”

“Well,” Sooyoung said. “We could fill her hairdryer with shaving cream.”

“You’re just suggesting that because she did it to you,” Sunny pointed out. “Plus, that isn’t scary. The point is to scare her.”

“You’ve never had to clean shaving cream out of your hair and sheets and everything, really,” Sooyoung replied. “Does anyone have any better ideas?”

“Oh!” Hyoyeon raised her hand. “I’ve got one. Remember that old house that nobody’s living in down the road? That everyone says is haunted?” Slowly, the girls nodded their heads. “Well, that place actually belongs to the company my uncle works for. He says it’s not haunted, it’s just old, but he can get us permission to go inside. We could scare her there.” Silence. Then Taeyeon all but dove across the table to hug her. Yoona pulled her food off the table to try and save it.

“You’re a genius, Hyoyeon! That’s a great idea!”

“You almost killed my noodles!”

Seohyun walked in, took a look at the chaos in front of her, and turned on her heel. She’d just eat later.

“Okay. So Yoona will be the one who comes in with her. We’ll say that we’re going in in pairs, and when Yoona brings Seohyun in, we’ll all run around the side and get into position.” Taeyeon pointed at Tiffany. “Tiffany, you’re in charge of the lights. Turn them off right before they get to Sooyoung. She’ll be pulling across the fake ghosts. Hyoyeon is in charge of making it sound like there’s ghosts upstairs since she knows the place the best. Jessica, you’ll grab at her legs. And Sunny, last but not least, I want you to scream once they get to the end.” Sunny nodded her head.

“And what are you going to do?” Taeyeon flipped her hair.

“I already did my part. I wrote a bunch of creepy things in fake blood and got a fake arm for her to step on at the end, when Sunny screams.”

“How does it seem like you got the good end of the deal?” Jessica asked, squinting at the other girl and leaning forward. Tiffany shushed them.

“Yoona just sent me a text. She’s on her way up with Seohyun. Look normal, guys.” Quickly, they all stood up straight and looked around. The other two girls could be seen walking up the small hill towards them. Yoona was waving, and Seohyun was looking around warily, eyeing the house.

“Is this really necessary?” Seohyun asked as they joined the group, giving the house another look-over. “Also, is this even legal?” Hyoyeon winked and gave her a thumbs up.

“My uncle got us permission to be here. I have the keys in my pocket. Totally legal!” Sooyoung leaned forward and grinned at Seohyun.

“What, are you chicken? Too scared to tour an actual haunted house?” Seohyun huffed and crossed her arms over her chest.

“I’m not scared at all. It’s just sketchy. Is it safe?”

“Yep, otherwise they wouldn’t have let us on the property,” Hyoyeon replied. Taeyeon moved them all into a circle and smiled widely, clapping her hands.

“And we got here at the perfect time. The sun is setting as we speak. Who’s ready?” Everyone cheered, prompting Seohyun to join in.

“So, who goes first?” Sunny asked, looking around at the group. Yoona quickly raised her hand.

“I’ll go first! Who wants to go with me?” Tiffany shook her head.

“I don’t want to go first, so not me.” Sooyoung quickly brought her finger up to her nose.

“Not it!” Immediately, all of the other girls put their fingers to their nose. Seohyun was just a bit to slow. “Seohyun, you’re up.” She whined a bit and let her hand fall.

“Of course I am. What are we doing?” Hyoyeon pointed at the front door.

“My uncle told me that he cleared space for us to walk from the front door out the back door. That area is completely safe and set aside for us.” The sun seemed to be setting faster than usual. Seohyun grabbed Yoona’s hand and squared her shoulders.

“Fine. Let’s go, unnie.”

As soon as the front door was closed behind them, the girls vacated the yard, dashing for the side door. Inside, Seohyun slowly closed the door and looked around.

“I can’t believe the lights in here still work,” she said, squinting at the old light bulb above them.

“They keep it workable, I think,” Yoona replied, taking a step further into the house. “It’s still super dusty though.” Seohyung followed her move, and they stepped into the living room. They had barely taken two steps when the lights flickered and died. Seohyun jumped.

“Okay, maybe not?” She could barely see in the darkness, only a bit of light spilling in from the window. “This is dumb. Did you bring a flashlight?” Yoona patted her pockets.

“Just a tiny one. But maybe then we wont step on anything weird.” She pulled the flashlight from her pocket and smiled a bit. She knew exactly when and where to shine it, and she swung it around the small living room before letting it fall on the space on the wall where the wallpaper had peeled away. Written on the wall in what seemed like blood with someone’s finger were the words “Get Out”. Seohyun stopped her her tracks.

“I thought her uncle said this place was safe,” she whispered. Yoona shrugged her shoulders.

“Safe enough not to fall down, I guess. She told me that her uncle is even afraid of this place.” Just as she finished speaking, the sounds of footsteps rang on the floor above them. Slow, steady footsteps. Pacing.

“Is…. Is there anyone else in here with us?” Yoona looked up and shook her head, not bothering to shine the flashlight at the ceiling.

“There shouldn’t be. Her uncle said that the place is empty.” Seohyun’s hand tightened on Yoona’s and she tugged her forward.

“Let’s just get out of here, this place is creepy.” She stepped forward, further into the room, and Yoona’s flashlight flickered. She stopped again. “What’s that? Don’t tell me that your flashlight is dying.” Yoona frowned and shook the flashlight.

“That’s weird. I just put batteries in it too.” That was the cue. From somewhere down the hall to their left, Sooyoung pulled on a fake ghosts, letting it move past the two girls. In the complete darkness, the cloth brushed against Seohyun’s face, making her let out a squeal and jump back, squinting into the dark to try and see what had just touched her. Yoona looked up, shocked by her sudden movement. “What happened?”

“Did you not just feel that? Something definitely just moved past me. I felt it touch me.” She attached herself to Yoona’s arm. “Okay, haha, this prank is funny, let’s go.” Yoona looked down at her, putting on her best scared face.

“Seohyun, this isn’t a prank. I can’t get my flashlight to turn back on.” The youngest whimpered and tugged Yoona forward.

“Let’s just go. Come on.” As they passed into the kitchen, Jessica, who had hidden behind one of the old couches, reached out and touched Seohyun’s leg. She screamed and shoved Yoona further into the kitchen. “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.” Upstairs, Hyoyeon was following them, slowly. Pacing. Yoona’s flashlight flickered back to light and landed on a puddle of blood on the floor, and bloody footprints leading to the fridge, and then back out, the way they were coming into the room. Jessica, suddenly getting an idea, moved behind them, out of the reach of any light, and began dragging her feet to sound like she was walking towards them. Seohyun spun around, but she could see nothing.

She stepped backwards once, twice, trying to see what was behind them. Then, on her third step, her foot hit something. Something human.

A blood-curdling scream shook the building, and Seohyun looked down to see an arm sticking out from behind the fridge. An arm she’d just stepped on. The back door was right there, and it seemed like whoever was behind them was getting closer. Desperately, she grabbed for the door and swung it open, tumbling out into the night and dragging Yoona behind her.

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, are you guys crazy someone was murdered in there we need to call the police we need to do something. Oh my god, we could have died. What if the murderer is still in there, he knows we saw, he might follow us.” Seohyun turned around to look at Yoona, taking in a deep, terrified breath. And saw that she was trying not to laugh. Her blood turned cold in her heart stopped. “Wait….”

Out from the house came the rest of the girls, laughing loudly and giving each other high fives. Finally, Yoona let herself laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.

“Sorry Seohyun. I lied. We were trying to scare you.” She let out the breath she’d been holding.

“You mean. All that blood and everything. Was fake?” The girls nodded, and Taeyeon grinned.

“That was my handiwork. Didn’t I do a good job? We really had you fooled, Seohyun.” Seohyun let her arm fall away away from Yoona’s and let out a whine.

“I was really scared, you guys!” Tiffany came forward and grabbed her hands.

“Sorry, but you prank us so much, we just had to get you back a bit.” As the girls laughed, a thump came from the house. They all froze.

“Uh, everyone is here, right?” Sunny asked. They slowly turned to look at the house. Another thump sounded inside, and at that, they all went racing down the hill towards their cars, screaming.

A moment later, a man stepped out. As he watched the girls take off down the hill, one turned back and winked at him, throwing him a thumbs up. He chuckled.

“Hyoyeon wins this one.”

After he’d retrieved his duffel from the sleeping bag downstairs, Geek milled about Goodneighbor to assess his options as to stocking up to hit the road. He’d hoped he could have stayed longer before having to head out again so soon, but he thus far had no complaints. They weren’t kicking him out--yet. He was simply earning his keep by running this errand for their Mayor.

The small town was fortified the entire way ‘round, with just the one entrance. He’d stepped out of the Statehouse to the other end opposite the one he’d entered, resulting in his coming across a number of different establishments he’d not yet seen due to being pigeonholed behind the landmark building. To his right, a theater that now boasted the title of “Memory Den,” and to his left, the Hotel Rexford, which still seemed to be operating as such at first glance. At either end of the short span of street were corrugated metal shanties with a good handful of squatters. His dark, angled undercut had entirely fallen to the left side of his head by this point, as it was wont to do. When the Neighborhood Watch noticed his thoughtful, confused glances, one of them--pale hair, wiry sideburns, another of the ghouls--chuckled and walked up to him.

“Y’new here, so I suspect you’re a little lost. Rooms available at the Rexford--Claire charges ten caps a week, though. Fred’s got all the chems you could ask for, if you’ve got the funds. And that over there’s the Memory Den, if you’re interested in relivin’ some... curves you miss, heh. I think Irma might get a kick outta ya. Round the corner’s Kill or Be Killed an’ Daisy’s Discounts, if y’need supplies. And if y’hadn’t been there yet, The Third Rail’s under the Statehouse. Best bar in the Commonwealth, if you ask me.”

“Under the Statehouse?” He’d listened quietly up until that point. “Under, Rail. It used to be a subway station, then.”

“Bingo.”

Galen thanked him, and rounded to the right around the long Statehouse, through a small square with park benches, and back down a narrow street. Briefly he wondered about the alley to his left, but he could see the door into Goodneighbor ahead of him and went straight rather than investigate what might have been down there. It might be considered trespassing, for all he knew.

He started at Kill or Be Killed first, wondering if it was the kind of place it sounded like. At its front counter was an Assaultron robot, and the pink outsider froze as tactfully as possible in the open doorway of the shop, hoping she didn’t perceive him as an enemy. He remembered that during the war, the government had issued a decent number of the vaguely anthropomorphic machines to the military, and that they’d been formidable, notably terrifying adversaries. Her mostly featureless, long face was divided in half both directions, by a seam which held a single glowing red ocular lens, and had two short radio antennae where ears might have been on a more human countenance. She still ported military paint, down to her designation as USA issue on her chest.

“Well, hello. Everything here is guaranteed to injure, maim, or kill at your discretion. Except me. I only kill when I want to.” Her coy, holographic voice imparted the impression in Galen’s imagination that had she moving features, that she’d have been making eyes at him.

“An... Assaultron runs this store?”

“That’s what my makers called me. An Assaultron: Designed to provide various security related tasks to the modern man. Runtime conclusion: Why work for the man when you can work for yourself? New designation: K-L-E-O. Kleo. Fully independent store owner. Robot enough for you, smooth talker? Now, what are you buying?”

“I, ah, what have you got?” Galen’s feet were cemented firmly on the dark marble floor, and he tried to force a plaster smile. “...Ms. ‘Tron.”

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m a woman. And I run a store that sells very. Large. Guns. So what’ll it be?”

“Let’s see what you have.” She had him beguiled beyond a faculty to do much better than humor her.

“Take a look around, sweetheart. You’re sure to see something you like. Me, for example.”

He browsed her small store, similar in layout to Daisy’s, owing to its shared building. Most of what KL-E-O had to offer lay behind the counter on gun racks and shelving, but there was also a workbench beside the stairs, laden with various equipment. Albeit impressive, the guns didn’t much catch his fancy, but the prospect of working on his current weapons certainly did. She had an ammo bin, as well as a junk bin. Perusing the various odd things in her junk gave him an idea. All he had left he thought she might like was the pipe rifle from the super mutant, though, but he offered it anyway.

“Would you gimme a box of bullets, a few screws, and the meat mallet there?”

KL-E-O processed a moment.

“What caliber do you require, tiger?”

“Whatever is cheapest. I’m not picky.”

“Sensors indicate an equivalent exchange will be thirteen 10mm bullets, two screws, and a meat mallet. Affirmative?”

He wasn’t sure whether it was a good trade, but what he was receiving in the trade would be more useful to him than if he’d have kept it.

“Before I agree, I realize I should ask if I could. What do you charge to use your workbench?”

“It’s a free town, baby. Do whatever you like. However. Probability is low that your results will satisfy your needs quite like my guns.”

“...Deal.”

The items changed hands, and he walked up to the workbench. The vice, metal saw, and drill press all helped him tool the head of the meat mallet. He took apart his left knuckleduster, removing the wingnuts. With the head of the mallet cut in half with a few connecting lines bored into the raw side, he then licked the raw side out of habit before butting the backside of the line of rings and bumper of the duster up to it. The bolts went in, and he tried it on to admire the sturdiness of the improved design. While he was at it, he made use of the belt sander to freshen the blade of his wrench-shiv as well.

“You run a good business, KL-E-O,” Galen thanked on his way out. “It was good to meet you.”

“Don’t be a stranger,” she replied.

He adjusted his duffel as he strolled into Daisy’s. The friendly, blonde ghoul was sitting on a stool, reading a deteriorating magazine, but she picked up her head when she heard his footsteps.

“Oh! you came back. I heard you next door. Was hopin’ you’d come back.”

“That KL-E-O... sure is a femme fatale type. Hoo.”

“Makes two of us,” she grinned. “Couldn’t get enough of this figure? ...No? Then I suppose you really are the sword swallowing type.”

“Goodneighbor has its deadly vixens right up front and center to greet a fella when he first steps foot in the place,” he played along, matching her playful sneer. “Between you and KL-E-O, I’m doomed.”

“I knew I’d like you. What brings you back in, if it wasn’t me?”

“The mayor asked me to go check up on something for him, so I need some supplies.” A pause. “I know you don’t run a charity. I’ve got about twenty dollars and three tin cans to my name, and I don’t suspect that’ll get me all that far.”

“How long are you suspecting this to take you?”

“Not sure. A week, if I’m lucky? I think I’ll do well enough with whatever I find in dumpsters along the way, but what I really need are... better utensils, for lack of a better description. Tin snips, maybe a hammer if you’ve got one. Still gettin’ used to my change in dietary habits. It ain’t recent, but to be fair I only recently went cold turkey off of the normal stuff.”

“A set of tools? I can certainly help with that.” She casually rose from her perch to fish around in her milk crates of miscellany. Without looking up, she suggested, “You’ve... also got that library book. That might sweeten the deal.”

“You can have it,” he agreed, a little too curtly to have meant anything other than he’d meant it. “I only picked it up because it was the first book I’d found above-ground that wasn’t crumblin’ t’dust. We had a copy back at the vault. I’ve read it... too many times.”

“It’s been long enough since I read it that it’ll be like I haven’t before.” She set down a handful of different tools. “A ball peen hammer, a pair of needle-nose pliers, and tin snips. I’ve got a pair of wire cutters, too, but they’re probably too rusty to make immediate use of for their intended function.” Reaching under the counter, she produced a book of her own and slid it toward him. “Twenty bucks and your book, for these four tools and my book? Mmh?”

“Kerouac’s On the Road.” The ex-vaultie raised an eyebrow.

“I thought you might enjoy the irony of it,” she admitted. “So do we have a deal?” When he hesitated, she raised an attentive finger and dog-eared their transaction. A brief rummage yielded a piece of leather armor--a right shoulder piece. “How about now? Keep that arm in one piece a little longer.”

“You’re a real comedian, Miss Dais’. Sure thing.” Again, he walked away feeling slightly more useful for the exchange.

“My pleasure.”

“Oh, uh. I noticed it last night but I know it was late. Is it all right if I use your sewing machine? My hood is coming unraveled. Duct tape only holds so long, I guess.”

“Help yourself. I let everybody here use it. Most people don’t leave it how it was before they used it,” she insinuated with a pleasant aggression and a smile.

“I’ll be sure to clean up afterward,” he assured.

The book went into his bag with his vault suit, the tin snips and pliers into his hip pockets, and the hammer into the tool loop at the side seam of his thigh. He set the armor on the sewing table while he worked on the hood. It didn’t come out perfect, but it didn’t have to. The article of clothing had become a source of comfort for him in the past week, and he didn’t want it coming apart any faster than it would just for sake of unfinished edges. Once it was repaired, he unzipped his jumpsuit to slip it back into the neckline; then, he slipped the slim pauldron armor up onto his bare shoulder and fastened it, and zipped back up.

“I didn’t expect it to be comfortable,” he commented, patting the armor through the thick utility fabric. He fished his gloves out of his duffel, and beat the daylight out of them on the side of the table to get the material flexible again.

“If you survive the errand Hancock has for you, I’ve got one of my own to send you on. In case you needed one more thing to remind yourself to survive out there.” Daisy winked at him when he glanced up.

“Guess I’ll have to wait to find out,” he mumbled when she didn’t elaborate.

“Don’t read that book all in one sitting, if you can help it,” she suggested, watching him use her broom and dustpan to pick up after his mud-and-blood fit and deposit it in front of the store. When he came back inside and returned it readily, she added, “Reads best if you break it up over a week or so. At least, in my experience.”

“I’ll let you know how I liked it when I get back in town,” Galen ribbed, grinning wide at her as he shouldered his duffel again and walked off to exit town again.

Maybe when he returned, he’d have cause to pay a visit to The Third Rail.

The last stretch of Trader's Walk finally lay before them, down through the Carrion Canyon. It was a semi-peaceful path since no one could linger there, and it could be said it was safer if your primary fear was being struck by lightning. But the bed of the canyon held plenty of dangers, and none so sinister as its extreme barrenness.

It would have been courting starvation to cross without supplies, but Luddie knew well where she was taking them and had not let them come unprepared. They had made a slow time of it while crossing the Ashfall Waste just to fill their stomachs and stock up. Trader's Walk shied away from the Great Furnace, and wound instead along the shore line, skirting the Blacksand Annex to avoid the treacherous tectonic movement of the Molten Scar and finally passing through the Emberglow Hearth.

This meant plenty of time to gather fish and meat, and plenty of heat to smoke and dry it with. The red bananas that grew in bunches near the shore were gathered in huge numbers and baked over the heat pits into crunchy red discs that would last the rest of the journey. Insects, whenever they could be found, were gathered by the hundreds, ground down into a fine powder, mixed with water, and baked as hardtack for the faes. All in all, they did quite well for themselves.

It hadn't hurt that Fletch was with them either.

It was well known that having an elemental representative accompany any caravan on Trader's Walk was good luck, and none walked so devoutly with the Flamecaller as Fletch did. She treated their passage like a holy pilgrimage, and every time they paused to rest or camp or gather, she could be found kneeling toward the smoking heights of the Great Furnace. Local coatls had treated them quite kindly seeing such a magnificent member of their species walking at the head of their group as their Fire Liaison.

Luddie quietly suspected that several young males and at least two females who couldn't hide the stars in their eyes had more personal reasons for their assistance. She couldn't blame them. Fletch was lovely yes, but she was the kind of dragon flame parents hoped their offspring chose as a mate. A fire dragon among fire dragons.

Maybe that was why, as they journeyed ever deeper into the Shifting Expanse, she lingered near the back of the group. Luddie knew the young coatl must be gazing back. She was a proper member of clan Shard by birth, that could not be contested. But Heliantheae and Maragi had gone back to the coatl motherland for all of their nests. For Fletch, she was looking at her birthplace.

Luddie began to wonder if she might leave once all this was done. With their destination so close at hand, the murmured conversations were all turning to what would happen next. Luddie felt she heard the same two lines many times as the trekked into the heart of the Shifting Expanse:

"Do you think we will go back?"

"To what? It's all been destroyed."

Luddie looked up at the black clouds spitting lightning at the plateau above. They had long since passed beyond sight of the Observatory; in the canyon even the world pillar could not be seen. Lutia was among her firstborn with Shard, and the only tundra child out of eight offspring who were all gone now. She was like a living relic to the clan's humble beginnings, but how different they had all become now. How different they would be from now on.

Actias dropped down, interrupting her thoughts. "News, mother. Beastclans on the mesa ahead."

"Preparing an ambush?"

"Too many. At least a hundred to each side. Longnecks and Harpies, and some movement among Serthis that seems detached."

"A beastclan feud?"

"Seems so. I would suggest letting them have the canyon and going around but it would leave us much more susceptible to lightning strikes."

She snorted with frustration. "Nothing for it. We wait. Let them weary themselves."

They paused. The paused turned into rest. The rest turned into camp as night fell. In the distance, the beastclans could be heard descending the canyons and fighting in the dust. Especially large dragons could make out the warring forms in the distance when the lightning flashed just right. Their numbers had gone well beyond a mere two hundred, and the canyon was littered with bodies. Beyond them, visible even in the dark, the Sunbeam Ruins seemed to emit a soft, welcoming light.

Opalite came to the front of the group, her nose held high to the air. "I smell them."

"Who?" Luddie asked.

"The feathered priests," Opalite growled, licking her maw. "Corven."

Luddie immediately got on her feet. "You're sure?"

"Yesss, mother. You do not forget the scent of their blood once you have crushed one in your teeth."

Luddie whistled sharply, and Actias appeared seconds later. "There are Corven out there."

"This far east?" he murmured. "The harpies brought them likely. They have a mind for magic that harpies don’t."

Lightning flashed.

"We need to move. We do not know what a flock of Corven could do out here."

Thunder rumbled, sluggish and slow.

"There is nowhere to go. To get to the top of the mesa with Caress we would need to go as far back as Emberglow."

"We don't need to get to the top of the mesa, we just need to give them a little more space. I don't want us near them, just back everyone up!"

Opalite guarded the rear, while Luddie rushed to what was formerly the rear of the group to about face everyone. They had scarcely gone anywhere at all when lightning revealed a third group of beastclans and stopped them cold.

Serthis. And these were not those of plague, who would poison you and take your bones and belongings as materials. These were the badlands Serthis living on the border where the Emberglow Hearth became the Carrion Canyon. Where they appeared, not even bones were left. Eating anything that fell, including each other, was how they survived.

The clan had been very careful to avoid them when passing the borderlands. But undoubtedly they were now waiting for the fight between the Longnecks and the harpies to subside to gather a bounty of fresh meat.

Of course, they could take dragon too, if it fell.

Caress moved at the same time they did, stampeding to the front and giving them reason to reconsider their approach. She smacked her body into body sides of the canyon, bringing boulders and sections of the cliff down on either side. Kea and Iblis came to her side immediately and helped her crash as much of the cliff side down as she could, narrowing the path the Serthis could take. They couldn't completely block it with stone, but they got it just narrow enough for Caress to turn side ways and drop her body in the way.

Pistis rushed to her, in a blind panic on her friend's behalf. "Caress, what are you doing?!"

"Blocking the way, dear. And if you say a damned thing about them scarring me with those toothpicks, I will be quite put out with you. Life before beauty." She turned to the Luddie. "That said, not a permanent solution, and I'd be grateful if you could come up with a plan, mother."

Luddie was wide-eyed. She gazed around, trying to organize in her mind who they had, who could help them. Actias, Hypnosis, Opalite... They were all on the other side and the rest were not fighters, what could she ask of them?

Equinox saw her struggling, battle and tactics were no domain of Luddie's. If only Azricai were there... But she wasn't. And Equinox was. "We run."

They turned to her, faces full of surprise. "Run where?"

"Toward the Sunbeam Ruins. Straight through their fight." She forced herself to remain unphased by their skeptical stares. "They're not here for us, and the Serthis are opportunists. We can flee and leave them to their squabble."

"And if they follow us?"

Fletch walked toward Caress with a fervent glimmer in her eye. "They wont. Please gather all the small dragons up with you and get ready to go."

"What are you going to do?"

"Pray."

She said as much, but when she flew up to stand on the broad plain that was Caress' back, her crest fluttered and there came a deep humming like they had never heard before. It vibrated through them as powerfully as the thunder above, and the group backed away. She held up a blackened branch with a single blossoming cinderflower and the reverberation rose to the level of a scream. She twirled and danced and stomped, all the while keeping up the sound and keeping her eyes on the Great Furnace.

Caress shook and snarled beneath her, swatting something on the other side of her bulk. "Barbarians! Please hurry, they're BITING me!"

Below, the group felt the ground rumble. If they were skeptical of Equinox's plan, they quickly forgot. Pistis, Luddie, Wychmire, Turan, and Hypnosis filed onto the backs of the larger dragons. Dalma and Tawhaki climbed aboard Caress, and did their best to stop the pile of Serthis all clawing and biting at a single spot where her underbelly was slightly exposed. Mostly this consisted of throwing rocks, as it would be foolish to go down and face them.

But they didn't have to. Fletch came to a stop in her dance, sweating like she had faced the forge itself. The unopened buds came eerily to life, glowing like embers as they flowered and released bright flecks of glowing ash into the air. Her humming subsided, only to be replaced by a distant baritone equivalent, like a foghorn blown from the bowels of the earth.

The rumble in the ground grew. Caress knew when the getting was good and quickly got back to her feet and moved with what haste her stubby body would afford her. At the front of the group, Equinox charged.

The canyon ruptured. Flames spewed from the forming fissures, and shimmering waves of roiling, pressurized air hissed from smaller cracks. The dragons fled the summoned aid of the Flamecaller, their haste given the edge of fear for the first time since they fled the Isles. Equinox spread her wings and splayed her spines to make her already formidable form as large as possible, and cut straight through the on-going battle between the Harpies and the Longnecks. The imperials trailed directly in her wake, making use of the moment of confusion to get through before either side could re-group. The guardians came after, Sunlore and Willowalk charging side by side and knocking any would be attackers back. They left the way open for Caress, who trudged and stomped and crushed them underfoot to escape the smoke and flame on her tail.

The heat was whipping up a fierce wind, volcanic smoke rising thick and dense into the atmosphere. The beastclans abandoned their battle, Longnecks climbing desperately to escaped the erupting bed of the canyon and Harpies forming swift retreat formations. Sparks flew, and lightning flared seemingly without end.

On the cliffs a corven priest saw opportunity and raised its own focus. A bolt struck the fleeing Harpies, decimating their numbers as it leaped from one body to the next on its journey to the canyon floor. Dalma and Tawhwaki saw it approach and raised weak magical shields to protect Caress. Dalma's was destroyed immediately as it was light element. Tawhaki's held, being just as weak but based in Arcane magic, and he was able to deflect the lightning away just as the barrier shattered.

Actias flew by them like a living shadow, and they saw the baleful light of the embers reflecting off his wings, making him truly appear to be a Smoke Gyre. He descended on the Corven with efficient ferocity. A second bolt descended, but the magic that controlled it was lost half-way through its arc. Dalma raised a second shield, determined to not make Tawhaki bear the full weight of the strike. It hit them both, and because it was not tamed by magic, the raw force of it broke through and knocked both from Caress' back.

Caress skidded as she fought her own momentum to stop. "Dalma!!!"

Fletch slapped her thick hide with the cinderflower branch. "Don't! I will go!"

The coatl leaped into the flame, and Caress saw Actias dive by her as well. The smoke engulfed them both, and she had no choice but to keep up with the herd.

Eventually, it became clear that the rumble of the earth and rising flames were no longer right behind them. They slowed to a stop in the clear air, and gazed back. The canyon behind them looked startlingly similar to the terrain of the Emberglow Hearth. The flicker and crackle of scrub and dry bone popping and fizzling in the heat was all around them.

"Hypnosis can't you do something?" asked Luddie.

He shook his head. "Nay, mother. A wind may clear the smoke, but it will only feed the flame."

Luddie was not certain of battle strategies, but she was resolute in not leaving anyone behind. They waited. And soon they were reward by the sight of the smoke splitting. Scorched remnants became visible first. Burned down bones coated in black ash. Small flames still licked at anything burnable. Fletch and Actias appeared side by side, with Dalma limping along between them. Tawhaki was draped over Actias' back. All of them were half-covered in a thick layer of soot, and they reeked of burnt flesh and oily smoke.

Luddie immediately ran to meet them, checking each in turn to see that they were alright. Actias shook his head when she moved to Tawhaki.

"He's gone, mother."

Luddie gazed sadly at the striped coatl. The marks of lightning were burned into his arms, up into his torso, and right down through his tail. The strike had probably taken his heart before he ever hit the ground.

Her face crumpled, but she held it in. "We are close. He comes with us."

"The Leyline Gardens in the Hewn River Valley will be a fine resting place," Kea offered.

"Yes...” Luddie murmured, stroking his singed crest. “I think he would have wanted to be buried in his garden."

They continued along the last Trader's Walk as the light of dawn peeked through the thinning clouds.

I had a roof claim at the end of the year for $45K. Ultimately the roof failed and damaged the interior of the home as well. The insurance company sent an initial check for $38K, and there is $7K in depreciation as a hold back. I've talked with my insurance company and I know that my car is still covered in an accident if someone else is driving it, so why would it matter that my boyfriend be listed on the policy?
