other thing with mask that is less of crit and more of a personal thing is uh.
the whole hanging and court thing and wrongful conviction is uh... a pretty stressful thing? esp like rn im talking about capital punishment in my criminal law class.... like ooooof that's a Very Real Thing.. I mean it always is, it's just particularly on my mind rn
So the whole case situation with replay could never be casual for me. That is an extremely stressful situation to have a time limit on yknow?Even with the 'not fully dead' thing there's still a LOT of baggage behind the concept of hanging to treat it like "oh well didnt manage it this time :)". Which I think is why in particular the pacing was so stressful for me on playthroughs. now i just stop right before the court case lol.
#i was so stressed on my first playthrough#i just gave up on runs where i didnt have solutions in time#i wont be attempting the mystery again until after the update#the motr debacle#motr spoilers#hanging cw

So…my original plan was to get all of my ongoing fics updated before New Year’s. However, I’ve had several 14 hours shift one after the other the last few weeks, so I haven’t even been able to THINK about updating fanfic.
Since getting my fanfics done wasn’t going to happen, I decided to take a look back at what has been a much longer time in the fanfiction world than I realised, and list some of the writers that I’ve admired and appreciated, even if I’m no longer in their fandoms or reading their work, as we ring in the next year:
Macx
Macx is one of the very first fanfiction authors I can vividly remember reading and going ‘wow.’ I discovered them back when I was in the Godzilla: Animated Series fandom (and boy am I showing my age with that revelation). Until then most of the fanfiction I’d read was short or pairing heavy, but Macx’s stories were long, and heaving with plot, well written characters, and fascinating ideas that I loved more than the original series. Every now and then, Macx would pop up in other fandoms I was in, but their greatest gift to me was inspiring another author -
Vathara
Vathara, Queen of the Crossover. Who liked Macx’s Godzilla fanfiction so much they got permission to write in their universe, and is responsible for getting me into so many fandoms I’ve literally lost count.
Every time they bring out another crossover, I usually find myself digging up information on Wikipedia so I can understand the other half of the fic. They also are one of the very few authors I know that almost always releases the full fanfic in one go, which allows no cliff-hangers, and essentially a must-read novel showing up overnight. And novel is the word. Vathara is like the Michael Crichton when it comes to writing, there’s so much detail, and what feels like an insane amount of research into various ideas. I have no idea how much of it is accurate, but nearly every fic I read feels like a deep dive into the meta of the original canon, to the point that with many fics, I have to remind myself that her work isn’t canon (and when it comes to her Yu-Gi-Oh fics, that’s kind of gutting)
Cywscross
Here’s a name that wont surprise anyone. I think I found them via Harry Potter, but honestly, I can’t quite remember. They can almost rival Vathara in the number of fandoms they’ve sunk me into. For one thing, I never would have given Katekyo Hitman Reborn another chance had it not been for their Harry Potter/KHR crossover, and considering how much KHR is part of my fanfiction career, that’s a pretty big thing.
What I loved about Cywscross was that when I found them, I was getting really exhausted from reading nothing but pairing after pairing after pairing. It was getting really hard to enjoy fanfic, because that’s not what I was reading it for – later I’d realise I was asexual and this suddenly made a lot more sense – but Cywscross wrote interesting ideas that were focused on the characters and plot. There was next to no romance, just friendship and interesting plots – everything I was looking for. The only downside was that the fics were usually unfinished, but that’s the way with a lot of fanfiction.
It also gave me hope that my own work could be popular – Cywscross was regularly at the top of the favourites in the fandoms, despite no pairings or sex scenes. I didn’t write a lot of longer fanfiction at the time, but I hoped that when I did, people would want to read it despite the lack of relationships.
Sadly, I don’t read a lot of Cywscross’s fics anymore, since they’ve migrated into Teen Wolf, which, despite my best attempts, I really can’t get into fully. They’ve also started to focus more on pairing fics, which are still good and something I’m into more now than I used to be, but not what I enjoyed reading their work for. When they leave the Teen Wolf fandom, maybe we’ll wander into the same fandoms again.
Esama
No surprises here. Esama might be a pairing writer, but their ideas are always so interesting. Especially when they decide to pull off a crossover. I nearly had a heart attack when I realised they’d stepped into the KHR fandom – and mourned when they chose to remove all of their fanfics from the net. So happy that decision was reversed, especially when it comes to their Final Fantasy fics, which have always been some of my favourites. Also have a very special place in my heart for their Doctor Donna fic, which I so sorely wish was canon.
John Tomorrow
Of all the writers I ever read, John Tomorrow is the one whose talents I envied the most, as they could achieve something that many writers can only dream of. Engaging fight scenes.
John Tomorrow wrote in the Final Fantasy 8 fandom – and wrote a tournament fanfic. Just stop and think about that for a minute. The arc most anime’s get that almost feels like filler and an excuse to introduce new characters, and he wrote one intentionally. On top of that, it was astonishingly good – his talent was bringing characters to life, to the point that you could genuinely visualise them fighting right in front of you.
As an added bonus, there was a genuine mystery to the plot. It wasn’t fighting for the sake of fighting, which took it from good to fantastic. He also managed to achieve something I’ve always wanted to do, a ‘rashomon’ fanfic, which took the events of a single day from several different characters points of view.
They’ve since left fanfic to try and publish original work, but I’m not sure if they ever achieved it. You can still read some of their work on fictionpress though, under the name Michael Kenny.
Red Witch
When X-Men Evolution was my favourite show, Red Witch became my go-to author. Ironically, unlike a lot of other crossover writers, I really don’t like her most popular works. Instead, I prefer their more comedic canon-adjacent fics involving the Brotherhood. Are they canon? Dear god no. Are they hysterically funny to the point I genuinely didn’t care? Hell yes. Half of their fics had me in literal tears of laughter, and considering I was going through a bad time when I was watching X-men Evolution? That was everything I needed. I haven’t read their work in years, but I still smile thinking about some of her pieces.
LittleMewLugia
LML was my definition of guilty pleasure for a very long time. The Transformers (live action) fandom was my second major fandom, and by far the biggest I’d been in. Up until then I’d mostly been in small manga fandoms and Final Fantasy 9. So, coming into a fandom where you could get a thousand views overnight was just a little bit overwhelming.
I found a lot of great writers here, but I admit I had a certain weakness for a very particular type of fanfic. I’m a sucker for transformation stories, and Autobot!Sam was pretty rampant here – I had my own attempt, but then I found LittleMewLugia, who also clearly had a passion for the transformation genre. I’d also grown more into pairings after going through so much glut (you either learn to appreciate pairings or just don’t read fanfiction after some point), so I was looking for transformation and simplistic pairings.
And by GOD, did they deliver. Admittedly, a lot of the fics followed a very similar plotline, but I didn’t care – a lot of pairing fics follow the same plot. Movies follow same plots – why fix what works? I just loved reading their stuff.
I’ve long since left the Transformers fandom, but I’ll always remember her work fondly for always giving me something that might not be unique, but would familiar, and something I knew I would like.
Blackkat
The newest writer to make it to this list. Although I’ve never been a big fan of Naruto, the fanfics are so much better than the canon, and enough of my favourite authors have dipped their toe in the waters here for me to keep reading. Especially when it comes to time travel fics – which given the fiasco that is the canon timeline, can only make things better. And Blackkat not only delivers unique time travel fics, but a word count that makes War and Peace look like some light reading – in a timespan I refuse to believe is possible without a TARDIS. Seriously, where do they find the time and dedication?

My Top Romance Anime
I made a new set of list of my fave romance anime series since I guess i deleted my post accidentally w/c i always update ( i dont wanna talk about it i'm still in shock lol) so here it is i made it as simple as possible, no long description. Just my collection of anime that caught my heart while watching it.
1. InuYasha
InuYasha follows Kagome Higurashi, a fifteen-year-old girl whose normal life ends when a demon drags her into a cursed well on the grounds of her family's Shinto shrine. Instead of hitting the bottom of the well, Kagome ends up 500 years in the past during Japan's violent Sengoku period with the demon's true target, a wish-granting jewel called the Shikon Jewel, reborn inside of her.
Inuyasha has always been my fave since childhood. I love the love and hate relationship they have. Inuyasha being stubborn but ever since he met Kagome he learned a lot of being a good person. I just hate their love triangle with kikyo nevertheless I love how it ends. It's really worth it after so many years of watching and waiting for it.
2. Kamisama Kiss
Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him.
I’ve never been so satisfied in my life until after watching all the episodes of this anime, the twist is amazing . It ends well. My heart was happy.
3. Wolf Girl and Black Prince
Erika Shinohara has taken to lying about her romantic exploits to earn the respect of her new friends. So when they ask for a picture of her "boyfriend," she hastily snaps a photo of a handsome stranger, whom her friends recognize as the popular and kind-hearted Kyouya Sata.
This is the first time i tried to watch anime series continously, i mean i never wanted to stand up while watching it haha it was good . I love how Kyouya manage to be so mean while everybody thinks he's a perfect prince, but i fell in love with this couple, theyre so perfect.
4. Noragami
Just as things seem to be looking grim for the god, his fortune changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, supposedly saves Yato from a car accident, taking the hit for him. Remarkably, she survives, but the event has caused her soul to become loose and hence able to leave her body. Hiyori demands that Yato return her to normal, but upon learning that he needs a new partner to do so, reluctantly agrees to help him find one.
aahh yatori makes my heart crave for more haha i mean dont expect a lot of romance on this, it highlights friendship . Yato being so childish and Hiyori is such a good girl, i cry whenever she loses her memory. The story is fun and I hope for the next season they will give exposure for my fave couple.
5. Inu X Boku SS
But Ririchiyo's troubles have only just begun. As a requirement of staying in her new home, she must be accompanied by a Secret Service agent. Ririchiyo's new partner, Soushi Miketsukami, is handsome, quiet... but ridiculously clingy and creepily submissive.
I love the twist, i dont mind watching this all over again. Their personalities is quite interesting, the story is cute with mix of mystery.
6. My little Monster
Shizuku Mizutani is apathetic towards her classmates, only caring about her grades. However, her cold view of life begins to change when she meets Haru Yoshida, a violent troublemaker who stopped attending class after getting into a fight early in the school year. He is not much different from her, though—he too understands little about human nature and does not have any friends.
oposite attracts haha Haru is so adorable. And their relationship is quite bumpy and unsure. But i think their feelings for each other are genuine.
7. Hatsukoi Monster
After meeting her rescuer yet again and discovering that his name is Kanade Takahashi, she confesses her love to him. Kanade says he would like for them to be a couple, but that Kaho may not want to date him after she finds out his secret. To her shock, Kaho discovers the startling truth: Kanade is a fifth grader!
Hatsukoi Monster follows Kaho's first steps into love with Kanade, her immature, yet kind, fifth grade boyfriend.
Age doesn't really matter lol. Its kinda weird as it may seems but who cares as long as you love each other then jump and take a risk. You can wait for the right time anyway haha. This anime is funny and i love how their friendship show. Accepting the situation and learn how to deal with differences is the lesson.
8. Guomin Laogong Dai Huijia
Lu Jin Nian and Qiao An Hao were not married by choice. On the first day of their wedding night, Qiao An Hao made three rules regarding their marriage. One, you are not allowed to touch me. Two, you are not allowed to announce publicly that I'm your wife. Three, you are not allowed to say that we are living together.
I've watch only the first two seasons. and i loved it. Its like a prequel to the story but i dont know why im satisfied with it haha, the truth is i dont have the strength to watch the season 3 and i dont even wanna know how it ends. haha while watching i was desperate and frustrated them to be together, i want a happy ending. But all I can see was barriers and situation wont let them be happy together. I hope they will make a movie based on this. All i know is it was too depressing but definitely has a good story line.
9. Red Data Girl
Izumiko begins by cutting her bangs, which shocks both her classmates and protectors. And that's only the start! Her guardian, Yukimasa Sagara, forces his son, Miyuki, to come to the mountain shrine and become Izumiko's lifelong servant and protector. Too bad Izumiko and Miyuki cannot stand each other. They have known each other since they were children, and Miyuki bullied her terribly. Will Izumiko and Miyuki work past their differences? Is she actually a literal goddess? Find out in RDG: Red Data Girl!
This anime left me hanging and didn’t give me the ending i crave for, i hope they gonna make a next season. but i enjoyed it so much, i love the main characters and the vibe it gives me. It's a serious mystery and a little bit of romance but not much. anyway i love this, never regret watching it.
10. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?
Willem takes refuge on the floating islands in the sky, living in fear of the Beasts below. One day, he is tasked with being a weapon storehouse caretaker. Thinking nothing of it, Willem accepts, but he soon realizes that these weapons are actually a group of young Leprechauns. Though they bear every resemblance to humans, they have no regard for their own lives, identifying themselves as mere weapons of war. Among them is Chtholly Nota Seniorious, who is more than willing to sacrifice herself if it means defeating the Beasts and ensuring peace.
Not every story has good ending but im glad i watched this. The couple reminds me of kaname and sagara of full metal panic but in different way. Their personalities are so perfect for each other. I wasnt really into anime girls with different hair colors but Ctholly change my point of view, she's exactly one of my fave girls now, her being childish, jealous and innocent around Willem caught me. Funny moments will be present too and their feelings for each other blooms slowly every episodes that you just wanna watch more. I wish the last episode ended the way I wanted, anyway, I still dont get why Willem is involved into two different girls in the past, i guess it wasnt explained that much, i just hate the flashback how he remember the girl while he's with Ctholly,. Well all in all, i enjoy much I just hope they add new season, but i dont know how it will start haha. Im just happy to meet and add this perfect couple in my list.
So that’s it, i’m still in search of finding good anime romance. I hope i wont let my foolish hand delete this post again lol. Im definitely gonna edit this and add more . Hope you enjoy reading. :)

To Be of Two Worlds
Chapter: 3
Word count: 1661
I made it back to my house in a little under half an hour. Usually I can make it back in almost ten minutes but the damn arm situation slowing me down. As I drove up my driveway the garage began to open on its own as it always did. I walked my bike in, popped the kickstand and headed into the building slamming the door behind me.
The kitchen was dark so I flipped the light switch flooding the room with florescent light. At this there was a sharp searing pain in my right shoulder, and it was in that moment I realized I had fucked up. Carefully shedding the jacket and dropping it on the couch apparently wasn't the best idea the sensations of being shot just now hitting me were too much. The room seemed to spin toward me but as it turned out I was just falling toward the floor. A rush of honey brown color and then a resounding thud as I hit the floor and curled into a ball cradling my arm. I don’t know how long I lay there, a sobbing mess before starting to drag myself into the bathroom.
"Argh where the hell is she?! Ember! I swear you red headed train wreck I'm gonna fix you and then beat you with a goddamn pillow." There was a voice, someone was shouting. For me? Jesus, they sound familiar. Could it be that new android, what was his name Connor? No Connor wouldn't swear this much. Would Connor swear at all? I doubt it. Hank? Hank would swear that much but he wouldn't threaten me. And he doesn't even know what to do with a hammer let alone my personal repair kit. That leaves only one person, Gavin. Of course, its Gavin why wouldn't it be? He did live here with me after all. A pair of feet rounded the corner into the hall and a rather colorful string of curses followed shortly after.
Hey Gav, what took ya so long?" I attempted to offer up a little chuckle as a way of playing down exactly how broken I currently am.
"Jesus fuck Ember why are you on the floor?" Gavin breathed as he carefully lifted me up off the floor.
"Just having a quick carpet nap ya know. Taking a bullet in the artificial arm is tiring work."
"This isn’t just a normal you've been shot incident. What the hell did you do to yourself?" I was set down on the bed in my room. Gavin was already pulling the repair kit out from under the bed. "And don't tell me it was nothing, cause I know you did something."
"Gavin why the hell does it matter? Just fix me so we can both get to sleep." I hissed while pulling my sweater off leaving me in a black cami.
"Why does it matter Ember? It matters if you want me to continue doing this for you." He grabbed my right arm by the wrist lifting it to see exactly what had been damaged. "You know how little I care for all things android related and yet here I am waving around tools playing with your Cyberlife brand arm replacement at nearly 3 in the morning when I could just as easily leave you to suffer for seven hours until your repair skank opens shop."
"Licia is not a skank Gavin. She may keep...unsavory individuals as companions but she is not a skank." I stated firmly. My gaze focused on the wall just beyond his head as he removed the bullet from the arm. "Why are you helping me anyway? Its been what? Two years since you last broke out into Gavin 'fix-it' Reed mode."
He mumbled, "I have my damn reasons LaChance now can it." He held up a thing I didn’t know the name of, only that its used to reconnect the artificial nerves. "Its time for this thing again. Hope ya like pain."
"Just, shut up and get it over with."
From the moment the tool touched one of the fake nerves I felt the breath leave my body and a searing hot sensation travel up my arm. I squeezed my eyes shut hoping that would block out the pain but it didn’t do much beyond make it worse. I should’ve known, losing my vision always made things hurt more. No one can really explain why. After what felt like hours of fiery hot wasp stings centered in my arm Gavin had putt the tools away. I didn’t need to look in a mirror to know I had gone white as a sheet.
"Ember, I know you and that asshole Kamski did something. What the hell was it?"
"Can this conversation wait till later Gav." I sighed as I slowly tested the arm out. Yep I got movement, that’s always good.
"Actually, yes it can wait till later." He paused for a few moments, I stood up and turned to face him. "But oh, would ya look at that! It is later now, so cough up the answers dipshit or I'm going in and telling Fowler you've added a mystery modifier to your system and hell pull you back outta homicide."
"God Gavin it won't interfere with my job get off my case." I had one foot out in the hall before he pulled me back into the room trapping me against the wall.
"What did you do?"
We stayed like that for several moments. Gavin staring as best he could into my eyes while I tried to look just about anywhere but at him. God why'd he have to stand so close to me. Wait, why do I care how close he stands, not like its making me uncomfortable. But as much as I'd like to think his presence didn’t illicit any kind of emotion beyond that of simply long-time friendship my heart betrayed me. It had picked up it's pace, fluttering in such a way that it made my stomach turn in pleasant knots in hope of... In hope of what? There's nothing here between us than that of pure simple friendship.
"For Gods sake Ember fucking look at me." He placed a finger under my chin softly lifting my face so I couldn't look anywhere but right at him. "Promise I wont be mad, just tell me what you did. Please..."
I groaned internally, he didn't say please often. In fact I think this was the first time he'd said it without me prompting him to. And even though I'd rather it didn't, it made my heart race a bit more and a slight warmth rise to my face. "The last time I went to visit Elijah I asked him if there was a way to bring back the memories of who I was before the incident." There seemed to be a slight softness in Gavin’s eyes at this statement but with a quick shake of my head it disappeared. "He said there was nothing we could do about that, that it was a time lost to me like a seed pod floating on a wave to grow in someone else’s mind but never again in mine. Or something philosophical like that, you know how he is. I then asked if there was a way to let me feel again-"
"Em you have your feelings, the damn emotions that complicate life far more than we need them too. What more did you think you needed to feel."
"Gavin, I wanted, no I needed to be able to feel things like warmth. God before the beginning of this month I hadn’t felt what its like to have the winter air hit you in the face when stepping outside to go to work. I didn’t know what the warmth of a candle felt like against my hand. I didn't even know what textures really felt like, all I got in response to petting your damn cat was that they were supposed to be fluffy and soft followed by the dictionary.com definition of the terms. I hated it, I hated not knowing what those things felt like, and being unaware of what pain truly was." Gavin's hand brushed against my cheek wiping away a tear that I hardly noticed had fallen. "So, I had him install the updated sensory package. I can feel things now Gav. I'm closer to actually being a legit person. Well as close as I can be without a squishy grey brain and a fleshy right arm. I need a cup of tea, please move."
Instead of moving away he moved closer to me engulfing my small body in a bear hug. You are not going anywhere except to bed. "I'll make you the damn tea, and I'll see about getting a health-related release from Fowler for a couple days. Anderson and that plastic asshole should be able to live without you for a day or two." He released his hold and stepped back a bit. The softness from the earlier hug gone replaced with the usual snarky smartassy Reed.
"There's no use fighting this, Dr. Reeds orders, huh?" I chuckled and walked over to my bed. "Cham-"
"I know what to do. Jeez you act like I've never brought you tea at what four in the morning before." With that he strode out of the room shutting the door slightly. "Also if I come back and you’re still in work clothes I'll deny you tea."
I gasped. "You wouldn’t dare."
"Oh, but I would sweetheart, now put on pjs or no tea."
I groaned and shuffled over to my dresser after some digging I came up with a pair of sweatpants and black long sleeve shirt that I’m pretty sure were supposed to be Gavins’. I didn’t care whose they were I threw them on and climbed into bed settling into a nest of pillows as Gavin cursed at my electric kettle in the kitchen.

What to watch in MLS this season: 22 teams, top talent and Tata Martino
Atlanta and Minnesota join the fun this year and theres plenty more besides. Our expert writers look ahead to what could be MLSs biggest and best season
Im most looking forward to
Seeing Fredy Montero back in the league. The man has a knack for spectacular goals. GP
Seeing how Atlanta United fare. Expansion sides have entered MLS with bluster and hype before, but no debutant has been so complete before theyve even kicked a ball. Atlanta have big-name players, a big-name head coach, a brand new stadium and a $60m training facility. Theyre for real. GR
Seeing Tata Martinos plan for Atlanta United. After our interview, the ex-Argentina and Barcelona manager seems eager to show the league what he can do with his fast and furious system. Hes expecting playoffs, but only time will tell. LME
Teams attempting to repeat their playoff feats are rare in MLS. A year after contesting the MLS Cup final, both Portland and Columbus missed out last season. That does not, however, feel like a sustainable pattern in the current climate. Im looking forward to a league where sustained periods of success are possible and we get to see how that changes fan culture. This years league could be an example of that. DR
Im least looking forward to
Well, seeing as its looming large, another chastening experience for MLS teams in Concacaf Champions League play. That and more non-developments announced as updates in the endless Beckham-to-Miami project. GP
More Concacaf Champions League games fragmenting the MLS season. Its bad enough that the international soccer calendar breaks up the MLS fixture schedule without the CCL piling on top. Its an ill-defined competition that brings nothing to North American soccer. Its time a new solution was found to stop MLS clubs from playing so many meaningless games. GR
Atrocious refereeing. Last season was probably the worst I have seen since I started reporting on the league and thats saying something. Lets hope the officiating tightened up this time around. LME
Complaints about the distances travelled by MLS teams. Theyre like belly buttons: everyone has one and none are really that interesting. Canada and the United States, if youre just tuning in, are large countries. Los Angeles, for instance, is quite the flight from Montreal. But planes are comfortable and teams and players know about these things, so there is no need for a wide-eyed player to pull a Steven Gerrard and discover the concept of distance again this year. DR
The new expansion teams, Atlanta and Minnesota, will
Probably have diverging fortunes. Minnesota will be hype-free, but organized and hard to beat under Adrian Heath, though it may take them time to be a sustained goal threat. Atlanta will either hit the ground running for a Seattle-style spectacular entry into the league, or they may have a more Orlando-style debut season, where they never quite add up to the sum of their parts. Depends on how quickly Tata Martino adapts to the idiosyncrasies of MLS. GP
Mark the implementation of MLS 3.0. The introduction of the two new franchises moves the league into the third phase of its history, with Atlanta United representing MLSs renewed move into big-time markets and Minnesota United reflecting the grassroots approach. The contrast between the two underlines a wider approach from MLS. They are the illustration of variety. GR

Both qualify for the playoffs. I mean, why not? if we are judging it based on last season, its really a testament if you dont make it. In the East, Philadelphia grabbed sixth spot with an 11-9-14 record and in the West, Real Salt Lake grabbed the last spot even though they had not won a single game since August. The playoffs are in October. Go figure. LME
MLS expansion teams do not have a particularly glorious history to this point, none of them have ever been very good in year one but Atlanta and Minnesota both look decent enough. Atlanta is stocked with attacking talent while Minnesota appears to be going for a bit more solidity. Past experience has trained MLS fans to bet against expansion teams making the playoffs, but it wouldnt be hugely surprising if one of these teams pulled it off. DR
The MVP will be
Sebastian Giovinco looked a touch piqued by being overlooked last season. He wont leave anything to chance this year. GP
Sebastian Giovinco. How could I predict that it will be anyone else? The Italian is the best player in the history of the league, and going on his pre-season performances he is only likely to get even better. The Atomic Ant wont be finished until he has carried Toronto FC all the way to the MLS Cup. He came pretty close last year. GR
Jordan Morris. Last years rookie of the year scored 12 goals in 34 appearances for the current MLS champions in 2016 and I think this time around, hes going to blow up. Morris is the perfect example of an MLS player. Hes versatile, diverse, hard-working and now that he has a better chemistry with Nicols Lodeiro, another contender, its a no-brainer. Also, dont sleep on Gio Dos Santos. LME
MVP awards invariably go to offensive players because the world is an unfair place. In which case, consider this a protest prediction for FC Dallass Matt Hedges. Some reasons for this: hes a solid defender on a good team that might finally break through this year. Moreover, as the league shifts from spending almost exclusively on marquee forwards to valuing defenders, one hopes that logic might influence the MVP race. It wont, but one can hope. DR
The top goalscorer will be
NYC FC look stronger this year, and can spread the workload around the attack. And Rodney Wallace may prove to be a telling addition for them. So David Villa. GP
Jordan Morris. The rookie scored when it really mattered as the Sounders went on to lift MLS Cup last year. He scored in both legs of the Western Conference finals, also netting more game-winners than any rookie in the leagues history. If Morris can add regular-season consistency to his game he will be the most potent striker in MLS. GR
Giovani Dos Santos. No Gerrard, no Keane, no problem. Now that the Mexican star has been able to experience a full season in Los Angeles, he will enter 2017 knowing full well what to expect. Last year, Gio scored 15 goals and 13 assists in 30 appearances for the Galaxy. Ill say he doubles at least one of those stats this time around. LME
Giovani dos Santos can pick up where Robbie Keane left off. Photograph: Jae C. Hong/AP
Sebastian Giovinco. For reasons that remain a mystery, Giovinco was not the leagues MVP last season. He was, however, MLSs best player, and can be expected to continue where he left off last season. While the leagues other scoring luminaries David Villa, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Ignacio Piatti will soon have to deal with the effects of aging, the Atomic Ant is still in his prime. DR
MLS referees are
Watching TV? Video replay experiments have been under way and MLS wont be shy about adding more gimmickry (they love their cans of spray). Im predicting psychics as seventh officials, second-guessing the un-American intentions behind every dive. GP
Poor, just like referees are all over the world. Gripes over the standard of officiating in North American soccer are legitimate. Some of the decisions made in 2016 were at best truly baffling, and at worst dangerous. But refereeing is enduring something of a crisis worldwide. Its not MLS that is suffering from a lack of top-class whistlers and flaggers. GR
Going to have their work cut out if they learned nothing from last season. As I said earlier, last year was a catastrophe. It cant get worse, can it? Can it? LME
An endless source of entertainment, but their impact is generally overstated. The league is rumoured to be after any official looking for a post-Premier League career. [Have fun in Saudi Arabia, Mark Clattenburg.] Even without foreign help to solve Mark Geigers regular brainfreezes, the fate of the league hardly hinges on PROs famous wobbles. Everything will be fine; everyone will whine about officials. It was ever thus. DR
Whats missing from MLS?
Apart from psychics as assistant referees, I do have a wish that Adidas werent the sole providers of the kits, for a little more variety in that regard. Though having seen what teams picked for themselves in the 90s, maybe uniform triple stripes is not so bad. And Id like to see the playoffs adjusted to a round-robin format giving home-field advantage throughout to the best regular-season finisher. GP
OK, Ill say it: promotion and relegation. Its baffling that this has become such a taboo subject in MLS. Sure, the benefits of a closed circuit are obvious, but lack of relegation means teams near the bottom of the table get quickly forgotten. Mobility between tiers would energise the doldrums of MLS. GR
MLS is the most diverse sports league in North America but I want to see a bigger female influence. Lets encourage more female coaches, refs, staff members to take part in the league. Adding to that, I think there should be a stronger relationship between the league and NWSL. So happy that Lifetime has picked them up for coverage. LME
Animosity. Rivalry weeks, while thrilling in concept, usually serve to demonstrate how some pairs are far more contrived than others. With time, however, the sort of enjoyable hatred and embrace of villainy that makes soccer so enjoyable may catch up with the league. For now, fans are left hoping that the few genuinely great rivalries compensate for all the rest. DR
Eastern Conference winners
NYC FC though Im not putting another flameout in the playoffs past them. And the Red Bulls and Toronto should be competitive again. GP
New York City FC. The revamp job conducted by Patrick Vieira at New York City FC last season caught many by surprise. Despite his lack of MLS experience, the former Arsenal midfielder turned the Bronx outfit into one of best sides in the league, finishing just three points off top spot in the East. Now, with the Red Bulls in something of a transition, NYC FC would appear to be best equipped to top the conference this year. GR
NYC FC. Now that Vieira knows the league and more importantly, how to play at Yankee Stadium better, the blue side of New York should be a stronger unit. Coming second in the East last year was a great achievement and they should now know what it takes to make a good play-off run. Moralez was a genius move and a stronger defensive unit coupled with a healthy David Villa should see them take the conference. LME
For the defense is overrated camp, I give you this years New York City FC. Much like last years team and the one before that, it is fielding a question mark at goalkeeper [this year hell be called Sean Johnson] and whoever is around in central defense. In other words, NYC FCs losses will be ugly but they may be able to outscore enough opponents to improve on last years early playoff exit. DR
Western Conference winners
Dallas. Last year was the year the promising young team were meant to come good, and in winning the Supporters Shield and US Open Cup they largely did so. Theyve made some good off-season signings and continue to churn out great young homegrown players. The Conference should be theirs to lose again. GP

FC Dallas Comfortably the most consistent side in the West last season, FC Dallas have managed to keep the core of their team together over the winter. Zach Lloyd has left for Atlanta, with Fabian Castillo off to Turkey, but other than that the Texans remain the same, also making the shrewd addition of Javier Morales to fill-in for the injured Mauro Diaz. Oscar Parejas side once again look to be in good shape. GR
LA Galaxy. I think this is the season when the Galaxy wake up. No Keane or Gerrard, to me, is an advantage as this club now belongs to Gio Dos Santos and LA fans will love Romain Alessandrini. It all depends on head coach Curt Onalfo, but given the fact that he is not a newcomer to the teams philosophy (he coached the reserves) he should do enough to take them to the top of the West. LME
The Seattle Sounders won last years MLS Cup with key players injured [see: Dempsey, Clint] and less youth and depth than the current iteration. They will probably punish me for this prediction by getting off to an awful start, but that is basically The Seattle Way. MLSs contrived parity never bodes well for repeat winners, but this could be the team to do it. That or theyll make me look like a fool. DR
MLS champions
Lets say Dallas finally go through a playoff series without a fatal 10-minute lapse in concentration, and they deliver the trophy their talent deserves. GP
Toronto FC. While Giovinco was undoubtedly the star of Toronto FCs 2016 season, it was Jozy Altidore who pushed them all the way to the championship game. Arguably for the first time, the US international found his groove in Canada, scoring in every play-off game in the run-up to MLS Cup. With Altidore in top form, supported by Giovinco and Michael Bradley, as well as an improving defence, TFC appear to be perfectly built for knockout football, as they demonstrated last year. GR
NYC FC. Yes, Im a New Yorker. Yes, I am a founding member. So sue me. The squad looks great, we have a Peruvian (Alexander Callens) and players like loanees Yangel Herrera and Miguel Camargo are going to be key unsung heroes in the middle – an area often abused by the opposition last year. Bring it. LME
Im already regretting both of my picks, and will go with NYC FC just for the fun of it. The league could use a good villain a role for which Patrick Vieiras team is suited and NYC FC would be the most fun team to go all the way if only because they are uniquely unequipped to play solid playoff soccer. Having now predicted that, they will probably ship five goals in every playoff match for the next decade. DR
Who will surprise us?
Vancouver werent as bad a team as the standings suggested last year they just got chronically unlucky with injuries at the start of the year and never recovered. Theyve got injuries to start this year again, but Yordy Reyna may be like a new signing when he gets back from injury in the summer, and in the meantime Montero is very much the natural goalscorer they lacked last year. Anyone looking past Vancouver because of last year could be in for a surprise. GP
The Chicago Fire. For so long the running joke of MLS, the Fire have enjoyed a strong off-season, making arguably the statement signing of the winter by poaching Dax McCarty from the Red Bulls. They have also added Hungarian striker Nemanja Nikolic, who has scored 112 goals in his last five seasons in Hungary and Poland, and proven MLS performer Juninho. Finally, the pieces are in place for Chicago to have a good year. GR
Maxi Moralez. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder from Argentina was one of the smartest acquisitions by any team in the off-season. In my opinion, NYC FC have their own Giovinco. Dont believe me? Youll be eating your words in October. Also, my paisano Yordy Reyna is going to light it up for Vancouver. Youve been warned. LME
With apologies to the citys fine residents, Chicago has put out one of Major League Soccers more appalling sides in recent years. The club has regularly been atop the league allocation order only for big names to go anywhere else. This year, with Juninho and Dax McCarty, the Fire has the ghost of successful MLS midfields past, and that might be enough for a marked improvement. The bar for this team is punishingly low, but those two geezers should be able to easily jump over it. DR
And finally why should we care?
Because David Beckhams honor is at stake Because Colorado Rapids vs Minnesota United Because its statistically likely that your village has put a cheeky expansion bid in Because Guardian writers children need to eat. GP
Because MLS has never been more interesting. With Atlanta United joining the league, and LAFC joining next year, the spread of top-class talent and marquee franchises has never been greater. New York and LA were once the only places that would register on the global soccer radar. This season is the greatest illustration yet that that is no longer the case. GR
Any mightier-than-thou comments from European fans need to remember something. Yes, this isnt the Premier League or La Liga, but MLS is getting better year after year and Tata Martinos arrival is another sign that if they cant compete with China when it comes to player transfers, theyll up the ante with better tacticians and youth development. A smart move that will pay off in the next few years. LME
Unless youre Andrea Pirlo, MLS is no longer a retirement league. This years squads are loaded with young talent that can actually excite and surprise viewers. Moreover, theres enough volatility to keep things exciting. MLS historical antipathy towards super-teams means that most matches are of some consequence and few are forgone conclusions. What has in the past been criticized as a recipe for mediocre boredom may finally produce a uniquely exciting, if not excellent, league season. DR
