as someone who was never even well-versed in youth culture when i was demonstrably a youth, i am interested in how youth culture today is presented in cinema and tv and how correct or incorrect it actually is -- very aware of and comfortable using terminology (therapy speak, queer lingo, critical race theory especially), very snappy and quippy (this not in an 80s heathers or 90s buffy the vampire kind of way where it's a particular quirky writing choice), very appearance-wise trendy in a semi-homogenised model/runway/pro-youtuber kind of way

this not just in american cinema and tv, but perhaps heavily influenced by those representations. does sex education actually present a lens through which real teenagers can relate their experiences? does euphoria? do [insert netflix films here]? heartstopper?

real question, but also because my work with youths (that is 17-21ish year olds) is usually centred around people more at-risk and/or isolated and/or disabled and/or suffering from mental health issues, and i always feel like these other representations are too... polished. in outward presentation, as well as in speech mannerisms and general knowledge, but perhaps it's because i don't work with your average teenager who's just vibing (are any teens just vibing? probably not, considering the Horrors of life generally)

but also makes me sad if it is like that, that your average 14-17yr old would be expected to present as polished in that way. to have perfect makeup and outfit choices and to know how to manage complex emotional situations and to carry that much

obviously people steal things from other people it's one of the oldest tricks in the book but it still always surprises me to learn that people plagiarise because my introduction to the concept was basically being told that if i ever plagiarised anything i would be executed by firing squad and my head would be removed and displayed on a spike outside the walls of the hallowed academic institution i was attending as a warning to others
