Saw - Oscar Piastri/Reader/Logan Sargeant
Words: 507 Summary: Lando has wished a few times that he and another driver had swapped positions, but never so much at this moment. Note(s)/Warning(s): Secret Relationship, Mentions/Talks of Cheating
Masterlist | Support Me!
Lando stares at his teammate, shuffling his feet, bottom lip between his teeth. “You alright, Lando?” His eyes dart around the empty room as he tries to smile. “Uh, yeah. Everything is uh…” he trails off, quickly sitting next to Oscar. “Look mate, I uh, I saw something.” “Oh.” Oscar clicks his phone off, pocketing it as he turns his full attention to Lando. He looks down at his lap, clearing his throat. “I uh, do you know where Y/N is?” “Yeah, she’s with Logan. Williams has him and Alex doing a between of videos, she’s there so he’s a bit more comfortable.” Lando winces more and more as Oscar continues, because really that made the whole thing worse. “Look, I really don’t want to tell you this, but I saw them, Logan and her, kissing.”
Dead silence.
Lando doesn’t think he’s ever heard such silence before in his life and his eyes are squeezed shut, not wanting to see Oscar’s reaction. It had to be bad if he was still being quiet, right? Or maybe it was just the stunned sort of silence, unable to think of anything to say. It was either that or so angry that he couldn’t say anything, and Lando didn’t know which one was worse. Probably the anger, he quickly decided, mind spinning. Logan is or rather was his best friend, they practically grew up together due to karting and then racing, and he kissed his girlfriend, or his girlfriend kissed Logan, either way it was a shit situation.
The silence is killing him, opening his eyes he keeps them on his lap as he starts to ramble. “It really sucks, mate and I’m sorry that it’s happened, but think about this, you can get a better girlfriend and bestfriend! I mean, Logan is Logan, y’know American, arrogant, you’ll be alright without him. And Y/N,” he struggles to find something bad to say about her, because really she had seemed alright to Lando with the limited interaction he had with her. “Well, she cheated on you. Her loss, right?” “Lando,” Oscar interrupts, and his mouth clicks shut. “I think you’ve said enough.” “Right. Of course.” He mumbles and finally looks at the younger driver's face only to see him looking amused at Lando.
“You’re not angry.” Oscar shakes his head, smiling. “I, uh, I think a few things got lost in translation. But all three of us are seeing each other. She didn’t cheat on me with Logan, that’d be a bit impossible.” “What?” He laughs. “I’m in a relationship with both Logan and her. There’s no cheating going on.” Lando lets out a large sigh of relief as it clicks in his brain. “Thank fuck. Oh my god.” He breathes. “I don’t know what all that entails and I don’t want to know, but mate, I was shitting myself telling you that.” “I could tell.” Lando sends him a fake glare, but gives up after a second, too relieved by the news that he didn’t witness any cheating.

The World did not end
(A/N): 'ello and welcome to my first F1 fic. I'm quite new here (not to fanfic or tumblr, I mean F1), but I want to give back to the F1 community, since you all helped me out tons during a really rough period these last couple of months.
Pairing: Lando Norris x platonic!reader
Warnings: mentions eating food, death of a loved family member, grief, it sounds sad, but it's actually pretty sweet and hopeful (it's based on a tiktok trend), English is not my first language btw
Wordcount: .7k (she is a shorty)
Masterlist ______________
Finding Mclaren’s reserve driver crying in the cafeteria wasn’t what Lando expected to stumble upon, when I went to check out where the repeating music came from. It sounded like a sad song that could land a high spot on his next Spotify wrapped.
“Uhm, (Y/N), what’s wrong?” he asks gently as he approaches the table. After a startle she turns off her phone, which has been playing the music. Frantically, she wipes her tears. It still does nothing against the fact that she has been crying and that her blood shot eyes are very visible.
Lando shakes his head. When people think Oscar is an introverted person, she is the masterclass of introvertedness. Like, the last stage of a pokémon evolution. That’s why seeing (Y/N) cry in a semi public place like the cafeteria calls for concern.
“There has to be something. The food here is not that bad. I mean, I have the same reaction when I see fish being served, too. But today I felt like the meals were rather good. So do tell. What’s bothering you?”
First she shrugs, the twenty year old not being able to find her voice immediately. “The- the world didn’t end when I was 13.” The tears are coming back again, restricting her voice once again.
Lando gathers her into his arms. even though he doesn’t understand what is happening at all. Does that matter right now, though?
The girl needs another minute or two until she is composed enough to explain the reason behind her crying. “There is this Tiktok trend going viral right now. It’s about people saying what mundane things they are able to do, or-or which things they have achieved, and all that because the world did not end when they were a certain age. They mean they got through some heavy event in their life. And because they got through this, they are able to do said things or achieve this.”
He nods, understanding the bittersweet and hopeful outlook this kind of videos can bring. “And something heavy happened to you at 13?” He probes while trying to keep a cautious tone, not wanting to overstep any boundary he doesn’t see.
“My, you see, when I was 13, my grandmother died. This was the first time I felt real grief. I wished for the world to end, because nothingness would have felt better than this immense amount of grief. And this led me to thinking of how many times I wished for the world to end. Because there were important and life changing events approaching me so quickly. When the world ends, I wouldn’t have to go through them, right?
And suddenly I’m 18, writing my final exams in school and it felt like the biggest task in my life. it felt like make or break. But the world did not end. I was able to graduate.
Then I got into the drivers academy, I am training, studying, and meeting people. I’m doing everything and anything. Because the world did not end when I was 13.
And it didn’t end when I was 16, overwhelmed with studying for school. It also did not happen when I was 19 and put under contract to be a reserve driver for Mclaren.
The world never ended. I begged and cried for all of this to stop. To have peace. Because I thought that I would only feel at peace, when nothing happens anymore. And the world didn’t end and now I sit here with you, talking about a tiktok trend.”
Lando understands her train of thought and sentiment immediately. “You know, I’m happy it didn’t end. These past couple of months with you here were pretty fun. Even Oscar admits it! With that true little smile, not in that monotone tone of his. These interviews and the media stuff is much more fun with these silly remarks of yours. And you are an amazing human being. I’m really glad that your world did not end, because meeting you made mine better.”
(Y/N) laughs, the tears being gone and cheeks heating up at that confession. “I’m glad too. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to ravish my way through the mountain of pasta minutes before you came in.” They giggle, knowing they share similar food preferences and have the culinary plate of a four year old toddler.
And all that, because the world did not end.

Some more thoughts about : The neutral to enemies to friends to lovers but spice it up with a crash - below
English is not my first language, this is unedited spilled thoughs.
*They dont become touchy after the accident, but before - Carlos has this need to touch everyone he is talking to or just are around him, so as soon as they start to have fun together during nights with other drivers Carlos just has the need to put his arm around Oscar's neck And Oscar just go with the flow since Carlos does the same with Lando and Charles.
It turns into long hugs and cuddles after the accident, Carlos doesn't like how Oscar is taking it - Carlos expected Oscar to be angry, to explode in rage and refuse his fate, yell at everyone and somehow throw the wheelchair and crutches out the window, but that's what Carlos would feel in his place, that's a little bit what he feels deep down. He is upset and angry but also angry at Oscar 'Did he really loves the sport?!' is one of the many questions on his mind.
*Carlos learn that Mark Webber is an Oscar Expert. Some times he would ask everyone to leave the room to give Oscar space, even though Oscar hasn't said a thing, haven't even moved. It happens a lot during the 4 days Carlos stay, he start to think that Webber dislikes him, they have a talk while Oscar is sleeping peacefully (so many painkillers).
During the talk Mark tells him how Oscar was while growing up, how he is more logical than emotional, he talks about Oscar winning races, f3 and the f2 championship but not jumping around or yelling at the top of his lungs like Leclerc did in f2, Oscar simply had a big smile on his face. "He has always been like this, like he works on low energy." Webber tells Carlos how right now Oscars reaction is a bit different, "He cried the first day when you were holding him but right now I think he is refusing to, I think he sees that as a useless reaction since it won't make things turn back. I tried to talk to him about it and he tells me not to worry, but I can't. He needs to allow himself to feel his feelings. To grieve his career."
Mark tells him how they have a video call scheduled with Nicole early in the morning, she wants to actually see Oscar, only hearing him on the phone and receiving pictures is not enough for her heart. He ask Carlos if he would be okay to stay in the room with them during the call "I think the dam will break yknow? And he will need us."
Before the call Carlos ask Oscar if he can fix his hair "Its fine" "It is fine, I'm sure the birds love it, no?" He gets a little chuckle from that, others would say Oscar was still a bit high from the drugs but Carlos just likes to think he is funny.
"oh wow I could go back to sleep like this, I love it" Carlos hear him whisper while trying to comb his hair to the right direction with his fingers. Yep, Oscar is high.
During the call Carlos is out of the frame, he is watching Oscar more than anything, how he is avoiding looking at his mother's crying face, concentrating in the corner, how he doesn't finish most thoughts, how he is slightly shaking but moving his hand and asking Mark to hold the phone to not be so obvious.
Carlos put his hand on the bed, by Oscar's side, he almost went to touch him too many times, his body acting on impulse, so used to show support and comfort like that. And to his suprise he feels a hand on his, lacing their fingers, his whole body is shaking. The call is almost over with Oscar's sisters wishing a fast and painless recovery and Nicole asking to talk with Mark, as he leaves the room he takes a last glace at Carlos and he gets the message. The door close and he hears Oscar's voice waver as he ask 'Can you hold me? I think- Something is wrong'
And he holds him against his neck "Big Breaths Oscar, can you do that for me?" Helping him during the panic attack, and comforting him carresing his hair and back when the tears finally fall, saying between hiccups "I want to walk again, I want to drive! I need to driver!"
"You will, you need to heal first ok? We will help you ok?"

congrats on 2k my wife🤍gimme your three favorite oscar moments (either from interviews or as a character whatever)
Hi wifeyyyy <3
Oh this is a good question...
We know he was amazing in Moon Knight, obviously, but I want to bring attention to that moment when they're in the desert and Marc rips the mirror off the car and goes over away from Layla to work on the puzzle or whatever and Marc says "alright you're up" and then switches to Steven. That SWITCH. Like please bitch, amazing. Also, through that whole show, I know makeup helps, I'm not blind to the wonders of makeup in the movie industry, but how he can make 3 people look so different? It's unreal to me. Like these are all the same guy, and the expressions he pulls are just soooooooo goooooood. Like come on.
His performance as Blue Jones never ceases to amaze me. Again, his expressions are amazing, but the yelling and the way he really did a good job of being so many things at once. I mean he was pathetic at times, but also terrifying at others. The way the character shifts from being in control to losing control and Oscar makes it so seamless and believable is just *chef's kiss.
I just love how he seems to GENUINELY enjoy interacting with his fans. Like seeing all the photos and videos people took of him while he was doing Sidney and the way he looked at people and just seemed so genuinely happy and joyous to have so many people around who appreciated him was amazing. I wish I could've been there, but I probably would've died. I've never seen someone just so genuine. My mind constantly goes back to the fan art book (I think that's what it was) that someone gave him and the video that was posted about that and just the way he was SO grateful about it, like come one dude. Even if he's "acting" when he reacts that way (which I don't think he is, the reactions seem too genuine to me), then he cares enough to put on a show so either way, he seems like such a genuinely nice person and not a Hollywood cunt.
I love him too much lol <3

need ur analysis on the mclaren wrapping vid ASAP!!!!!!!! much love <3
<3<3 oh babe @slugesh already did such a great post of the best parts and I rly don't have anything to add other than to double down on wishing they'd just filmed them side by side? it's also such a weirdly throwaway Xmas video compared to how hard they've gone every year before this ?? giving them such a boring challenge and straight up not even putting the colors through post so that Oscar's lips don't look purple?? have they had like a staffing change since previous year orrrr
I wasn't active in fandom to know how much of the first part is true but I do know that they go hard for carlando bc the engagement is absolutely rabid lol. I also wouldn't be surprised if they're separating out the Lando content from Oscar bc Lando will get them more engagement on his own since he's a bigger personality and has such a huge existing fanbase. I don't check sites like twitter or even tiktok that much so idk how much their basing their targeted posting on?
side note that I kinda wish they'd done some research into the Prema videos bc that social media team blows all F1 teams socials out of the water (and with F2 money and resources no less!). none of the Prema boys apart from Arthur and Robert were natural hams yet they got all this great natural content out of them, especially Oscar! I've been on a few sets similar to that and truly so much comes from the energy behind the camera when dealing with non-professional actors or presenters. if you're low on props and the sets are minimal or just a meeting room then you've got to give the people on camera a LOT to bounce off of. again, I get that Carlos and Daniel made it easy for McLaren's team before this but like have they never done filming with any other driver?? on camera charisma is not a prerequisite for their jobs for a reason fgafgljasfgas
they could do just a teensy bit more and get all that great Prema Oscar content for themselves js!
I truly don't know enough about McLaren bts staff to know what they might know about bringing RPF into real life territory (though Lando posting that story about the attacks on Luisinha def made their radar). I personally feel like they just found Lando's reaction to those socks to be funny, esp since he followed it up by saying he'd wear them for race days. and as I said above, they're not going to give up the social media equivalent of a cash cow like carlando or at least discourage it.
but yea the comments on the Xmas vids on IG are why I'm happy to be backing off of carlando engagement when I'm reminded that the women involved in the larrying pay taxes and possibly have children and they're spending significant time upvoting carlando onto every. single. Lando post on McLaren sm. I'm actually getting sick of shit like the mareea caray thing bc it's being absolutely beaten to death. you would literally think Carlos wasn't over there actively saying that he considers himself and Charles a packaged deal and that they make a great couple and that it wasn't his choice to go to Ferrari if you went solely by comments on a team he'd planned on leaving before even fulfilling one season with them ??

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy: A Brief Study of the Fandom Politics
Read on our site!
The Star Wars sequel trilogy itself is a mess – sure, the movies were box office hits, but in terms of everything else, it’s a sad representation of Star Wars. While the mishandling came from the corporate side, fan reception had a huge impact on the movies as well. With each new sequel trilogy movie, the fan reactions revealed more and more about fandom politics when it comes to diversity, especially those for large franchises like Star Wars and Marvel.
To provide some context, the Star Wars sequel trilogy started with The Force Awakens, which featured Daisy Ridley as Rey, the first woman main protagonist in Star Wars movies, John Boyega as Finn, the first Black lead in Star Wars, and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, the first Latino lead in Star Wars. In the second movie, The Last Jedi, Kelly Marie Tran was introduced as Rose Tico, the first Asian lead in Star Wars. Historically, Star Wars has never been an extremely diverse franchise, so having multiple people of color as leads in the sequel trilogy was a drastic change from the past. However, fan reactions varied as there were some fans who celebrated and happily embraced the diversity, while others resented the introduction of these new characters of color. These reactions intensified after the final movie, The Rise of Skywalker, led to people pointing out how terribly the characters of color had been handled throughout the trilogy.
Speaking personally, my reaction matched the latter – as someone who grew up watching Star Wars, I had always wished to see someone who looked like me in the movies, which is why I was excited when I saw Rose. Yet, when I went online, I found that thousands of people were harassing Kelly Marie Tran for her role, so much so that she had to delete social media. Similarly, John Boyega faced harassment from racist fans and has spoken out about facing mistreatment during his Star Wars experience. What’s more concerning about this situation is that Disney didn’t attempt to protect the actors of color from harassment. These actors had only been able to speak out about the harsh fan treatment and Disney’s mishandling after the series had concluded.
The split between the fandom as a result of the diversity in the sequel trilogy is a funhouse mirror version of the modern political scale. A large majority of people fall somewhere within the scale, and there are small but vocal conglomerates at the extreme ends of the spectrum. Vocal is an extremely important keyword to consider. Most people who watched The Last Jedi and didn’t really like Rose Tico probably weren’t writing angry comments online or making YouTube videos in their basements hating on Kelly Marie Tran, but those who did influenced why Rose Tico barely had any screentime in The Rise of Skywalker despite being a pivotal character in The Last Jedi. The main reason why for this decision, as well as every other decision Disney has made, is money. Attention from fans, whether bad or good, indicates the possible performance of the film at the box office.
This might not seem like a big deal when looking at the fandom up close and examining the individual takes on either side of the spectrum, but pulling back the lens to look at this as a whole, the fact that the reaction of a group of vocal fans can worsen the mishandling of diverse characters affects the movies that reach casual fans. While supporting actors of color and improving diverse representation in the movies might result in the loss of revenue from racist devotees, the positive social impact of supporting diverse would benefit the greater general audience, especially since Star Wars is such a large franchise that has an international reach. Especially considering how Star Wars is a story about fighting fascism and oppression, the franchise’s decision to allow oppressive ideals from scared conservatives to influence the direction of their movies is glumly ironic.
Star Wars isn’t the only franchise where the fandom has fragmented to imitate a political spectrum, but it certainly is an interesting one to study. Providing a complete analysis of the reasons why the sequel trilogy had caused such a divide within the fandom when considering diversity is a nearly impossible task, especially when considering not only the fan reactions but the cruel corporate mishandling of actors of color. While analyzing this situation involves viewing fandoms as a collective with groups that hold differing ideas, it’s also important to remember that fandoms, like countries, are composed of individuals and that certain individuals and groups are not completely representative of the fandom as a whole. Still, that doesn’t mean they do not have a quantifiable and noticeable impact on the media and its influence. It’s fruitless to urge corporations to act against their nature and consider the social impact of their decisions in media over their financial gain to add to their largely accumulated wealth due to media conglomerates, but discussing fandom politics can help everyday consumers like us consider what kind of media we’re supporting and consider how we can rally together to support diverse representation to combat the negativity spread by bigoted fans.

2022 Oscar nominations reactions slugfest: Contributors venting over the most exciting surprises and heartbreaking shocks
“Be careful what you wish for,” Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria proclaims when reacting to the announcement of the 2022 Oscar nominations, which were announced in a live presentation Tuesday morning by Leslie Jordan (“Will & Grace”) and Tracee Ellis Ross (“black-ish”).
“A few days ago, I said to some of you that I love a really unpredictable race and I love it how it’s crazy and it’s hard to predict and it keeps things interesting,” he says, adding that ultimately, while “there were some really interesting and happy surprises and of course, a lot of nominations that we expected, there were also a few snubbed, so to speak, that I found really hard to swallow.”
Licuria debates with contributors Charles Bright, Riley Chow and Tony Ruiz to vent about what they are delighted to see included in Oscar’s class of 2022 and also some of those head-scratching snubs and heartbreaking shocks. Watch our Academy Awards nominations reactions slugfest video above.
Kicking things off for the guys was Caitriona Balfe (“Belfast”) missing out on a supporting actress bid, which nobody saw coming. Chow was perplexed by her exclusion, noting that it was his favorite performance of the year, but agreed that it was likely a result of some category confusion by academy voters, who are free to nominate actors as either a lead or supporting performance), where Balfe likely scored votes in both categories, thereby diluting her overall chances at scoring that coveted first Oscar nomination.
What made some of the shock exclusions all the more difficult to reconcile was that the so-called Oscar pre-cursors, i.e. those kudosfests that shape the Oscar derby by weighing in with their choices in the lead-up to the Oscar nominations announcement, were less predictive than usual. Certain contenders, like Balfe, Ruth Negga (“Passing”) and perhaps most surprisingly Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”) missed out after a promising pre-Oscars run, while other contenders showed up on Oscar nominations morning with little to no precursor support, like Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) who missed at SAG, Critics Choice and BAFTA, but squeaked in at the Oscars. “The tea leaves are nowhere more confusing than in Best Actress,” Ruiz sighs.
Other misses the guys weren’t happy about included Nicolas Cage (“Pig”), Marlee Matlin (“CODA”), Ann Dowd (“Mass”) and director Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) to name just a few.
As for nominees that the guys were most happy about, Bright summed it up best when he pointed out that Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) making the cut was a good news story for the day. “I’m happy for her, being a first time Oscar nominee,” he says. “She should she should savor that, for all that it’s worth.”
He was also excited about the four surprising nominations for Japanese critics’ darling “Drive My Car,” which he says is testament to he power of the critics for prestige films like this. “I really think that the critics, especially critics groups really help put a spotlight on ‘Drive My Car’ and has helped it,” he explains, adding that it “all started with New York and then LA and the National Society of Film Critics. A bunch of them went with this and I’m sure that it boosted its profile and made sure that people in the Academy watched it.”
“What this line-up shows is that ‘The Power of the Dog” is a huge front runner,” Ruiz declares about his favorite film of 2021. “Everything just has kind of solidified around it, which I think is the unexpected thing. I did not expect 12 nominations for this!”
Among Chow’s favorites was Jesse Plemons (“The Power of the Dog”) and Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”), both included after unfortunately missing out the year before. “Jesse and Jessie should have been nominated last year in lead for ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things,’ so I think it’s a kind of a nice surprise that they’re both nominated in supporting this year.”

Why did the Oscars snub Lady Gaga, Caitríona Balfe, and more 2022 contenders? EW breaks down the nods
Caitríona Balfe was one of the first major acting contenders to peak early in the conversation, earning raves out of the fall festivals for a film that, by all indications, was expected to sweep the Oscar nominations the moment it landed TIFF's prestigious People's Choice Award — a key foreteller of eventual Best Picture traction.
Initially succeeding largely on reviews for Kenneth Branagh's lived-in handling of a personal story (it's a semi-autobiographical look at his struggle through the Troubles in 1960s Ireland), the film sustained through the race thanks to the lovable, deeply engaging ensemble cast at its heart. Upon first viewing, it's clear that the family at the film's core is led by a lioness, Ma (Balfe), and her sensitive lamb of husband, Pa (Jamie Dornan). While both of their narratives drive the bulk of the story, the roles of the family grandparents Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds take a clear (but memorable) backseat to the younger set. That distinction is clear when absorbing the film, but all of the film's stars were campaigned in the supporting categories, presenting a problem for a branch like the Academy, which can vote for actors in whatever category its voters choose, regardless of where a respective actor campaigned. Thus, someone like Dench — a beloved, respected, past Oscar winner — in a clear supporting role likely earned more votes in the category than Balfe, who might've split her own chances thanks to category-crossing votes from Academy members who aren't paying attention to social media chatter.
https://ew.com/awards/oscars/oscars-snub-lady-gaga-caitriona-balfe/
Remember… there's a slim possibility that the Academy did with her what they did with Winslet for THE READER, and just took it upon themselves to elevate her to lead actress, the category in which she may actually belong. — Scott Feinberg, The Hollywood Reporter

YangYang x Gender Neutral Reader
Inspired by: My country is facing another lockdown and I never feel very good through those, so I wanted to cheer myself up (´。• ᵕ •。`)
Summary: Quarantine has you and your boyfriend YangYang locked in together. But you know without a doubt that there is no other person, you would rather spend it with.
Genre: Fluff… just pointless, tooth-rotting fluff
Warnings: Mentions of explicit content
A/N: My first YangYaaaang, yaaay!! About time I write for my WayV bias <3 I had soo much fun making this moodboard, even though it was hella difficult matching all the colours, but I kinda like how it turned out <3
Also, first time writing in past tense haha… so, sorry if there´s some time-switching, I´m very used to writing in present :’D
Hope you enjoy this, love u so much! <3
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Ever since the first day, quarantine has you and YangYang chained to your boyfriend´s apartment. However, unlike most of the people you have heard off, the two of you seem to be of the rare kind that enjoys the withdrawn lifestyle of social distancing. Maybe, though it was just bound to be nice, since you got to spend that time together.
In the beginning, you had been anxious. Hearing about all the statistics of couples breaking up and divorces being signed, had gotten you worried about the same thing happening to the two of you. In the end, you realized that the you worked too well for that to happen. Your communication was good – when one needed space, the other would give it. You shared more common interests than you could count on both of your hands, always leaving you with something to do. And the sex, well… reoccuring enough for the two of you to never run out of passion.
One of your favourite pastime activities though, were video games. YangYang had a large collection of them, quite similar to the one you usually kept at your own place. Sometimes, you´d spend hours, wandering virtual realms together and chat about god and the world, while gathering magical items and battling rare bosses. He made you laugh, you made his heart flutter. A pair, bound to stick together through thick and thin.
“If you keep buying those dorritos we´ll have to up our workout-game.” You laughed, watching him from your spot on the floor. In his hands, he carried a bag of said dorritos and a bottle of water.
Shrugging, he settled down beside you and dumped the food in your lap, “I could do a few more crunchies, if it means I get to enjoy my favourite food. Besides, we already burn so many calories with other… activities.”
As he wiggled his eyebrows, you pushed his face away, unable to conceal your laughter, “Gross.”
“Not what you said last night.”
“Oh god, can you stop?” You squeezed out and he finally complied with a laugh. He knew how much embarrassment you could take, before you´d just roll into a ball and pretend you didn´t hear him. But, the opportunity to tease you, was just too good to pass up. Especially, when your reactions were always so oscar-worthy. “Alright, what will it be today, captain?”
He hummed, skimming through the several titles, “I´m feeling Halo, to be honest.”
“A classic.” You nodded, “Let´s go.”
As YangYang moved to slip the CD into the Xbox, you made work of the dorrito package, trying not to spread all its contents on the floor. Half-succeeding, you held out a chip to your boyfriend, as he returned to your side and he opened his mouth happily. For a good while, you spent your time ganging up on a poor soul you met in the online-mode.
“Y/N, I think I´m going through a crisis.” YangYang suddenly muttered into the silence, as he shot another enemy right in the head.
You raised a sceptical eyebrow at him, “A crisis, huh?”
“Yeah”, releasing a dramatic sigh, he adjusted to sit with his legs spread a little wider, “I feel like you´re just too far away. My heart is twisting in my chest.”
A snort left your nose, “Wow, didn´t know I lived with a drama queen.”
“That´s not true!” YangYang pouted, before grinning, “You knew what you signed up for. Now come here.”
There was little you could do to resist, once he pulled out the puppy dog eyes. You had always been weak for them, almost as much as for his smile. That slightly curled grin with slightly pointed teeth, which made him almost look like a kitten. Sighing, you shuffled, until your back was pressed against his chest and you could comfortably resume playing. It worked for a while, with your boyfriend´s chin against your head and soft puffs of air hitting your hair every now and then.
However, you had never been a very strong person, when it came to affection. His arms wrapped so tight around you, just so he could reach his controller with both hands, had you feel more and more greedy for the boy´s touch. Sometimes he called you insatiable, whether it be with sex or simple cuddling, yoou never seemed to get enough. You knew though, that he liked nothing more than to indulge you. That, whenever you asked for a bit of closure, he was happy, because he felt like he had done something right.
It was the exact reason why you didn´t hesitate to voice your wishes right away: “I´m having a crisis, too.”
“Ah yeah?” You could hear the little grin on his lips.
Humming, you paused the game and put down your controller. As you turned in his arms, to sit in his lap instead, he did the same. It was flustering, but mesmerizing as well, how his eyes seemed to be unable to leave you entirely. You cupped his jaw with both hands, a small smile playing with your lips. A wave of gratitude washed through you – gratitude, that he was the one sitting here, no one else.
“I feel like I´m showing withdrawal symptoms.”
YangYang lifted a brow at you, but his hands settled on your waist anyways, “Withdrawal symptoms? Are you in a sugar rush?”
“Not quite, but close.” You giggled at yourself, “I feel like I´ve been without a good kiss for too long.”
It wasn´t difficult to see the exact moment his face twisted into realization, “I see. That sounds like quite a tricky situation. Where the heck are we supposed to get you a quick fix now?”
Rolling your eyes, you shuffled a little closer, “Just kiss me, you doofus.”
When he leaned closer, hands on your waist pulling you in, you felt reminded of how lucky you were. How this could have been the worst time for you, but you were here, healthy, happy and with your arms full of this boy, who loved you. You could have agonized over all the days, still to come, but what good would that do? When you had YangYang in your arms, his lips chasing yours eagerly and his scent of warm baked goods wavering around you, what use was there in worrying?
You smiled into the kiss, eyes closed and revelling and you could feel him do the same.

RWBY Volume 8, Episodes 8-12
All caught up with RWBY now! (Except for the premium only episode.)
So, two things first: 1. From now on, my blog will no longer be spoiler free for RWBY! I don’t have premium access, so no spoilers for that, but beyond that, I might now reblog spoilers for everything that’s been released to the public. Blacklist “#RWBY spoilers” if you don’t want to see them.
2. I was going to ask what the spoiler policy in this fandom in general is when it comes to premium access. From what I’ve seen, Youtubers usually wait a week before uploading their reaction videos, which I appreciate – but here on tumblr almost no one seems to hold back. I saw a spoiler for “Creation” before it was released publicly. The day episode 13 was released for premium access, I had to unfollow people for posting untagged spoilers for it. And when I went into a RWBY-related tag for one second, I saw a really big spoiler that put me in a very sour mood because it also happened to be very aggressively worded against fans of a certain character (basically, along the lines of “I’m glad X bad thing happened to Y character because I hate them and their fans”). So, that scared the shit out of me and I ended up looking up more specific spoilers about what exactly happened because I wouldn’t have been able to sleep otherwise. So, from what I’ve seen, this fandom’s spoiler policy is just “fuck anyone who doesn’t have premium access” 😒. Always nice to see people being so considerate.
With that said, let’s get into my thoughts on episodes 8-12. Under the cut, because unlike some people, I try to be considerate of others who might want to avoid spoilers.
- So, the Hound really was a person. Specifically, a person with silver eyes and that’s probably what happened to Summer. THANKS, I HATE IT. This is exactly what I feared it would be and what I didn’t want it to be. (I don’t want Ruby and Yang to have to fight and kill their grimm-ified mom, that’s too sad, okay?)
- I love that Whitley really came through and came up with a plan for evacuating everyone! He’s a good bean after all! And that he managed to press that button on the computer before running from the Hound? Amazing.
- Willow Schnee being one hell of a mama bear and summoning a thing to protect Whitley was epic. She was so close to breaking down before that, but then her child was in danger and she just jumped into action right away. Protective mom instincts ftw!
- Blake’s talk about how she looks up to Ruby and how she herself lost the youthful optimism Ruby still has was SO sweet! (Also, Ladybug is an underrated ship/friendship and I really don’t get why people say they never interact? Have you all just forgotten volume 1 and how Bumbleby’s first meeting happened because Yang was trying to wingman Ruby who was trying to befriend Blake??)
- Penny fighting the virus from the inside was amazing, she did so well! I also loved seeing Nora encourage her (and echo Blake’s earlier words back to her).
- Unrelated to these episodes specifically, but I tried to think about who my favourite RWBY charactes even are right now, and I find it super hard to narrow down because I love so many of them, but if I tried to somewhat narrow it down, then (in no specific order because don’t ask me to also come up with an order): all of Team RWBY (though Blake is a personal favourite), Ilia, Penny, Salem, Cinder. (But then again, I also love Winter and Qrow and Robyn and... you get it, it’s hard to narrow down. Oh, and of course Pyrrha, but... you know.)
- “Witch” was honestly my favourite episode of the bunch. That one was just so full of epic stuff. (And now I’m wondering if Salem being one of my favourite characters has anything to do with my love for witches. I used to be obsessed with witches as a kid. In every story I read that had a witch, the witch was always my favourite character.)
- Yang and her team sure found a way inside that whale fast! Also, really handy that Ren’s semblance evolved just in time for when they needed it. But hey, I don’t want to complain about convenient plot stuff too much. Sometimes the heroes are allowed to have a little bit of good luck.
- Hazel listening to Oscar and deciding to get both him AND Emerald out of there was amazing! He really does have a soft spot for kids and wasn’t kidding about not wanting more kids to die – we love to see it! I also think it makes for an interesting parallel that Hazel decided to do this right as Ironwood was sending students to fight on the front lines and Marrow was calling it out.
- I really liked Ren telling Yang she doesn’t have to hide her fear behind jokes. Ren being able to see emotions is going to bring about so many more good moments, I just know it!
- Emerald and “Hazel’s” talk with Salem gets so much better when you know “Hazel” is actually Oscar – Emerald has gotten so much better at illusions and fooled Salem herself! That’s impressive!
- It’s really practical that Ren could sense Emerald’s fear. But also, the group really didn’t have the time to discuss if Emerald was trustworthy – they needed to get out of there asap.
- The way Salem spits out the word “semblance” when she talks to Emerald shows again that she not only underestimates these “new humans” and their powers, but also considers them inferior. It’s a nice little detail how just her tone when she says that word says so much about her worldview.
- Yang straight-up running up to Salem and blowing her up was epic. It didn’t last of course, but it was still a super bold and epic move. I’ve talked before about how cool Yang is and she just keeps getting cooler.
- Yang calling Salem out was amazing and epic, too! And when she referred to Summer Rose as “my mom” that made me tear up just a bit 😢. (I really don’t like Salem’s smile when she says “her again”, though. I don’t want grimm-ified Summer, I really don’t want it, okay? keep it far away from me where I won’t have to see it.)
- I’m a bit sad about Hazel’s death, but it was a really fitting end for his character and a really cool way to go out. The way he looked at all of those kids in danger (proving again that that’s what it’s about for him), whispered “No more Gretchens” to Oscar, punched Salem in the face as she was about to hurt Emerald, injected all of those crystals into his skin (which looked epic, by the way), told Emerald to go, fought an epic fight against Salem and then grabbed her and set himself and her on fire, burning her like a witch – it was epic stuff! RIP Hazel, you died as a hero and went out in an incredibly epic way!
- Hazel’s sacrifice must have been super tough on Emerald. He died protecting her (and JOYR) and it worked. She got away from Salem, but only because someone else, a friend, died for her. Not only must it be awful for her to lose Hazel, she probably also blames herself. (And, as I’ve seen others point out, it was probably the first time in her life an adult did something to protect her. Wow. Someone get this girl therapy, please.)
- The whale getting blown up was an absolutely epic moment. From the music to the cinematography, I loved everything about it. (That said, I will miss the whale. RIP coolest villain lair ever.)
- I loved Watts’ speech to Cinder – and I’m saying this as someone who became a huge fan of Cinder this volume. I love her, but I also love roasting her, and a lot of what Watts said was stuff she desperately needed to hear. I honestly didn’t even like Watts before that moment, but that speech might have made me like him just a tiny bit. The way he just laughed when she dangled him from a building, the way he spelled it out for her that her methods haven’t been working and threw her failures in her face, the ending with calling her “a bloody migraine” – Like I said, I’m a fan of Cinder, but that was glorious and cathartic and beautiful to witness. But what makes it really perfect is Cinder’s reaction: The fact that you’d expect her to kill him or at least scream at him, but instead she spares him and just sits down and cries. I really love what they’ve been doing with Cinder this volume and that they’re finally showing her as someone way deeper than just a power-hungry villain.
- In general, let me quickly talk about Cinder, because even without having seen the last two episodes I can already tell you that she’s my standout character / favourite character of the season. (It was Ilia for Volume 5, Salem for Volume 6, Penny for Volume 7 – and now it’s Cinder.) I said back in my post about Volume 5 that I wish they’d do more with her because after becoming rather interesting in Volume 4 they just went back to making her a pretty flat villain – and I officially have to eat my words and apologize to RoosterTeeth right now! This volume proved to me that they know what they’re doing with Cinder and explained so much about her. I’m sorry for ever doubting the writing. I now want to go back and rewatch the whole show while paying more attention to Cinder and I can’t wait to see where her arc goes from here (yes, I want an eventual redemption, and what about it?). This volume is obviously setting up something big for her – I just have no idea what it is. And at the end of the day, she’s still the Maiden of Choice. She’s the key to the Beacon relic, and that’s going to become important eventually.
- Oh, and can I mention, just by the way, that I think Cinder looks amazing? I don’t understand all the people who say they miss her red outfits when this is clearly her best look yet. The black eyepatch, the cape, the earrings, the short hair, the high boots, the shorts instead of a dress, all the black – this is her absolute best look, period.
- I’ve also noticed that the scene between her and Watts is the first time Cinder has referred to Penny by name. She’s always referred to her with phrases like “some toy” or “Polendina’s creation” before, but this time she just called her “Penny Polendina”, then “Penny” again, and asked Watts how she’s supposed to take Penny’s power “if she’s dead” (not “destroyed”, which is what Watts said, but “dead” – something you say about a person, not a machine). I think somewhere down the line, Cinder has started to see Penny as a person and respect her as the Winter Maiden. Maybe it’s because of how Penny won the fight at Amity, or maybe (though this might be wishful thinking on my part) it’s because Penny questioned why Cinder serves Salem and showed her and Emerald mercy.
- Also, side-note: While I loved Watts’ speech, it sure is bold of him to call Cinder entitled when his own villain origin story is getting overlooked for a science project.
- Neo is an amazing little troll and I love her. From stealing the lamp and skipping along the ruins of the whale happily to those texts to Cinder, all of her moments were brilliant and hilarious.
- Some characters not just forgiving Emerald is totally fair and realistic. But, as I said before (and as Oscar also points out), they don’t have to. People think a “redemption” – or let’s just call it switching sides instead of using such a loaded term – has to include everyone’s forgiveness, but it doesn’t. If Yang and Jaune never want to personally forgive Emerald, that’s okay. They don’t need to forgive her to recognize that she’s changed and work with her. And, as Oscar and Ren point out, Emerald’s abilities would be very useful to have on their side. So, personal feelings are fine and all, but right now they don’t have the luxury to dismiss a potentially very useful ally. (And same for Oz, by the way. It’s fine if they’re still mad at him, but they also need his help.)
- Also, have I already said that I’m very happy for Emerald? Because I’m very happy for Emerald for getting out of there! (Mercury’s and then Cinder’s redemption next, please!)
- F*ck Harriet for trying to get Winter in trouble for letting JYR go. I’m hating her more every second. And then she seriously said “Who cares?” about Ironwood’s plan to nuke Mantle? She’s the most unlikable of them all.
- Everyone’s reunions were so sweet! I loved Ruby and Yang hugging 😭. And Yang cupping Blake’s cheek and their forehead touch had me all 🥰 🥰 🥰.
- After he threatened to nuke Mantle, I hope we can all agree that Ironwood is a straight-up villain now. The most infuriating part is that he didn’t even have to do anything! Whitley and Weiss had figured out a way to save everyone in Mantle and the SDC ships to evacuate people were already there. All Ironwood had to do was let them evacuate everyone to Atlas, and then Penny would have opened the vault willingly and Ironwood could have used the staff to raise Atlas as planned. Problem solved! He should have just sat there and ate his food – but he was so pissed about things not going his way (or maybe he just genuinely hates Mantle that much) that he thought sabotaging the rescue plan and threatening genocide was a better option.
- I loved Marrow’s arc in these episodes and how you could tell more and more that his conscience was making him turn against Ironwood. First he questioned Winter when she was going to nuke the whale before JOYR were back, then he seemed shocked when he thought they were dead, then he tried to talk sense into the other Ace Ops after Ironwood’s ultimatum, and then he straight-up called out Ironwood himself. That last one was dangerous though, and he was lucky Winter was quick enough to jump in and pretend to arrest him, because Ironwood was going to just shoot him in the back.
- Speaking of, I wonder how long Winter has been planning to double-cross Ironwood. How long was she already disagreeing with him, but waiting for the right moment to make a move? Either way, I’m glad she was there to save Marrow.
- The Renora confession scene was so sweet and got me a little choked up 😢. I’m glad they sorted out their issues and told each other how they feel. But like I said before, I think Nora’s arc of trying to find out who she is without Ren is really good and important and Ren respecting that was really good and important as well. It was just a very wholesome scene. Also, I like that we got a little bit more backstory for Nora (her mom abandoned her? that’s awful), and Jaune awkwardly leaving the room was hilarious.
- Robyn telling Qrow he’s a better Huntsman than Clover because he chose to do the right thing was a really important moment for Qrow, imo. (And just a side-note: I’m sure most Fair Game shippers are pretty chill – and I’m a strong believer in ‘ship and let ship’ – but a certain subset of them is starting to get on my nerves with how they ignore Clover’s canon character and story (acting like he would have rebelled against Ironwood if he were alive as if the whole reason he’s dead wasn’t precisely because he cared more about Ironwood’s orders than doing the right thing) and how they make every new plot point about their ship somehow (Oscar’s semblance? Better be a time-travel thing so Clover can come back. Staff of Creation? Better be able to bring people back from the dead so Clover can come back.) It’s so annoying.)
- Yang and Ruby’s talk about their mom was really intense. Ruby’s been holding all of these feelings in for so long, so seeing her say out loud what we’re all fearing (that Summer was turned into a Grimm) and seeing both her and Yang break down over it – that was a lot. I loved seeing Yang comfort Ruby and tell her that her plan for Amity wasn’t useless. Their sisterly bond is so sweet.
- Penny asking Ruby to kill her was another really intense moment. The look on Ruby’s face in that moment really said it all. Ruby has been through so much, has lost Penny before, so hearing that request – even though they fortunately didn’t have to go through with it – must have still been a lot for her.
- I really loved Emerald’s cute “newly reformed villain” moments. (“You guys have been getting your asses kicked… some of that my fault” & “I’m just going to be super pissed if you all finally decide to give up the moment I switch sides.”) I’ve said before (in my She-Ra posts) that my favourite part of any redemption arc is the “former enemies, now awkward around each other” stuff, so this was right up my alley!
- “The girl who fell through the world” was referenced twice now. Between that, the image of everyone falling in the opening, and the lyrics “sometimes it’s worth it all to risk the fall”, I’m going to predict that someone – most likely all of Team RWBY – will fall into that void and potentially end up in a different world.
- The group’s plan to defeat Ironwood, stop the bomb, and get to the vault was amazing all-around. I love the parts Emerald and Winter got to play in it, I love how we saw the plan’s execution before seeing how they came up with it and I love how everyone got to help, even the Schnees and Klein. I also love that the hole Oscar blasted through the ground of Atlas became relevant again.
- The design of the vault and the door are really nice and now I wonder what the other two are going to look like.
- Saving Penny like that was super risky, but they really were out of options. Just the fact that Ruby had to be quick enough to use her semblance and get to the staff before the virus kills Penny… jeesh, that was close.
- Ambrosius is a super fun character! I love that he looked at Penny and said “I’d love to meet whoever did this.” Also, the staff seems more useful than the lamp. The lamp only lets you ask three questions per century, while the staff can be used as often as you want – as long as you’re okay with whatever it previously created disappearing.
- I honestly still don’t completely understand what Penny is now. Is she meant to be human now? Or is she just a being made up of pure aura? How does this work? Ambrosius only created the copy that destroyed herself, so what’s left is Penny’s aura – but she somehow also has a body now? I guess we’ll find out more about what exactly this means later.
- Also, while I wasn’t sure how I feel about this decision re:Penny at first, now that I’ve thought about it for a bit, I think it works. It fits with the Pinocchio story, and I like that they didn’t phrase it as “she’s a real girl now”, but as “this is the girl who’s been in there all along”. Also, Penny saying “wow” after hugging Ruby and then going on a hugging spree was adorable.
- Watching “herself” self-terminate must have been really traumatic, though. Even if that copy was just a robot, it was still a disturbing scene.
- Who shut down communications in the middle of Jaune’s broadcast? I’m assuming it was Cinder, Watts and Neo.
- The whole dimension with the doorways that Ambrosius created looks amazing. (A while before watching this episode, I wondered if Raven could theoretically save Atlas by getting everyone to safety with her portals. It might not have been Raven, but I’m glad I was at least onto something.)
- “Do not fall.” So, about that… they’re all falling in the opening, (and we referenced “the girl who fell through the world” twice now), so I don’t have a good feeling about that. Also, Watts has been dangled from somewhere high twice now, so the third time has to be when he actually falls down.
- And Cinder is there to ruin the plan because of course she is.

2020 Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (preliminary round)
Yup, it’s back (bullet indentations are not working, so this post will look very ugly on your dashboards)!
Tagging a few folks who have participated before in this annual tradition/folks who I would like to extend an open invitation to (please contact me if you’re interested so I can sort you in a group ASAP... you will also be tagged for the final unless you tell me you are not interested): @birdsongvelvet, @bitch-genius, @dog-of-ulthar, @idontknowmuchaboutmovies, @loveless422, @lvl9gay, @neverwasastoryofmorewhoa, @phendranaedge, @poncho-honcho, @sayaf, @shadesofhappy, @thethirdman8, @uncoolforelimb, and @wehadfacesthen.
Hello everybody. For my fellow Americans, I hope your Thanksgiving was a good one. For the non-Americans reading things, I hope you are doing well, as always! Many things have fallen to the wayside in this unforgettable year. So in hopes of providing some sense of continuity and normalcy, here - as you have agreed to - is the Preliminary Round for 2020's Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (MOABOS). This is the eighth time it has been contested and the seventh consecutive year it has been open to involvement from family, friends, and tumblr followers.
For those new to this, my classic movie blog traditionally ends the year by honoring some of the best achievements from movies that I saw for the first time this calendar year (the "Movie Odyssey") with an Oscar-like ceremony. I choose all the nominees and winners from each category, save one: Best Original Song. It is the only category I can think of that does not require you to watch several movies in their entirety. I consider MOABOS as a sort of cinematic-musical thank-you for your moral support in various ways.
An unspecified number of songs have already advanced to the final round. 24 songs will contest this prelim in two groups - Group A and Group B. In a year when COVID-19 has closed theaters (and which I refused to go to an indoor theater even when they reopened), a year that I did not feel compelled to watch the newest releases on streaming services, there is not a single 2020 entry for 2020's MOABOS. That is, obviously, a MOABOS first - no other MOABOS edition has lacked a shortlisted song from a film released that same calendar year. And as of writing this sentence, I have not seen a single film released in 2020. Despite the lack of 1930s songs, this year's shortlisted songs might be the oldest on average. In other news, this year's field is a modest improvement from the record monolingual field of last year's (which contained only English and two Vietnamese-language entries). 2019's preliminary was the most chaotic we had ever seen, with shocking last-day stumbles and surges from certain songs ("I Dug a Ditch" from Thousands Cheer) that riled up a lot of participants. It's 2020 - will there be a repeat or even more drama at this stage?
INSTRUCTIONS Please rank (#1-12) at least six of your group's songs. Please consider to the best of your ability: how musically interesting the song is (incl. and not limited to musical phrasing and orchestration); its lyrics; context within the film (contextual blurbs provided for every entry for those who haven't seen the films); choreography/dance direction (if applicable); and the song's cultural impact/life outside the film (if applicable, and, in my opinion, least important factor). Imperfections in audio and video quality may not be used against any song. I encourage you to send in comments and reactions with your rankings - it makes the process more enjoyable for you and myself! The top five songs in each group automatically advance to the final round. I reserve the right to pick 0-2 songs from one or both groups that finished outside the top five in their respective groups to contest the final round.
The deadline for submission is Saturday, December 12 at 11 PM Pacific Time. That is 9 PM Hawaii/Aleutian Time. That deadline is also Sunday, December 13 at 1 AM Central Time / 2 AM Eastern Time / 7 AM GMT / 8 AM CET / 9 AM EET. This deadline - as we have seen in the last few years - may be pushed back if there are a large number of people who have not submitted in time. However, I very much do not wish to extend the deadline because the final round is more intensive and usually involves more participants. Tabulation details are in the “read more” below.
Please participate in the group you have been sorted into, if you have not yet been sorted into a group and would like to participate, please contact me. You can access most, not all, of your group’s songs in these YouTube playlists: (Group A) / (Group B). Again, please note that not all of your group's songs are in the playlist for various reasons.
Happy listening. Feel free to listen as many times as you need, and I hope you discover music and movies that strike your interest. The following is formatted... ("Song title", composer and lyricist, film title):
GROUP A
“Blue Shadows on the Trail”, music and lyrics by Eliot Daniel and Johnny Lange, Melody Time (1948)
Performed by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers
This is the introductory song to the final segment of Melody Time. That segment is dedicated to the legend of Pecos Bill, and this atmospheric song leads into the telling of that story.
“Born Free”, music by John Barry, lyrics by Don Black, Born Free (1966)
Performed by Matt Munro
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Song
This version with lyrics appears in the end credits. The main theme in the song is introduced in the opening credits and is incorporated extensively in John Barry's score across the film. Born Free, based on the non-fiction book of the same name is about two white Kenyan conservationists who raise an orphaned lion cub and eventually release her into the wild.
“But the World Goes 'Round”, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, New York, New York (1977)
Performed by Liza Minnelli
In this musical, USO singer Francine Evans (Minnelli) has been performing in New York City nightclubs, hoping to someday become a major recording star. This song appears as she is recording that very hit that will propel her to stardom.
“Exsultate Justi”, music and lyrics by John Williams, Empire of the Sun (1987)
Performed by orchestra and chorus under the direction of Williams
Lyrics in Latin
In this historical epic, affluent British school boy Jamie Graham (a young Christian Bale) is living with his parents in Shanghai when the Japanese invade. Jamie is separated from his parents and placed in an internment camp. Soon before the end of WWII, the prisoners are moved elsewhere, but Jamie hides and stays put. This song plays as Jamie bikes around the empty camp and continues to play as he encounters liberating U.S. troops. Jamie is dirty and malnourished when found; one can argue that this song is used ironically. It plays once more over the end credits. "Exsultate Justi" is a variation on a theme John Williams develops over the course of the film and harkens back to Jamie's past, attending Anglican services with parents.
"Farewell to Storyville", music by Louis Alter, lyrics by Edgar De Lange, New Orleans (1947)
Performed by Louis Armstrong and his band, Billie Holiday, and company
In New Orleans, the Storyville district was a den of drinking, gambling, jazz, and prostitution. The district was the home to a heavily black populace. The U.S. military, about to establish a Naval base nearby, forces the city to close the district for good. This song is a jazzy dirge to a center of jazz - a musical genre looked down upon by many of the city's upper-class whites due to its ties (real and imagined) to crime.
"Hawaiian Sunset", music and lyrics by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett, Blue Hawaii (1961)
Performed by Elvis Presley
In a musical packed end-to-end with songs, Chadwick "Chad" Gates (Elvis) has taken a job with a tour guide agency - and this includes performing during a luau for tourists. "Hawaiian Sunset" appears as one of the dinner show's numbers.
"Is There Still Anything That Love Can Do?", music and lyrics by Yôjirô Noda, Weathering with You (2019, Japan)
Performed by RADWIMPS
Lyrics in Japanese (translation)
Weathering with You is a romantic fantasy anime about a high school boy who runs away from his rural home to Tokyo, where he meets a girl who can manipulate the weather. It has been inexplicably raining for weeks without interruption in Tokyo, so they form a business to help clear the inclement weather for special events. The melody of this song is heard throughout the film's score. It does not appear with lyrics until late in the film. The song is played under the boy's seemingly impossible attempt to save her from an unwilling human sacrifice.
There is so much plot in this damn film (it's all Makoto Shinkai's fault) - I can't explain the context of the song or this movie in a reasonable amount of space.
“Mad Monster Party”, music by Maury Laws, lyrics by Jules Bass, Mad Monster Party? (1967)
Performed by Ethel Ennis
(opening credits version) / (soundtrack version with no sound effects)
In this Rankin/Bass stop-motion animated film, Baron Boris von Frankenstein (Boris Karloff in his final Frankenstein-related role) has discovered a formula that can destroy matter. Dispatching his bats to send the news, he summons the various members of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters to inform them of his discovery. This song is performed over the film's opening credits and the various introductions for the monsters as they receive their summons.
“My Dream Is Yours”, music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Ralph Blane, My Dream Is Yours (1949)
Initially performed by Doris Day; later reprised by Hal Derwin
Singer Martha Gibson (Day) has abruptly left New York City for Los Angeles to become a star on the radio. In a film where personal sacrifice is central, she stresses over how to bring her son out west with her, the direction of her career, and her tumultuous love life. "My Dream Is Yours" is the song that makes Martha a star, laying out the film's themes in its lyrics. I was unable to find Derwin's reprise, but no matter as the reprise is rather inconsequential.
“Ride the Wild Surf”, music and lyrics by Jan Berry, Brian Wilson, and Roger Christian, Ride the Wild Surf (1964)
Performed by Jan and Dean
Ride the Wild Surf is a surfing film that, unlike most surfing films of this time, is a drama. It follows three surfers (Fabian, Tab Hunter, Peter Brown) who have come to Oahu at the end of December to ride the large waves of Waimea Bay (made famous internationally by this song, this movie, and the Beach Boys' "Surfin' USA"). This song appears in the film's closing credits. The video provided is a montage of surfing footage that appears in the film.
“That’ll Do”, music and lyrics by Randy Newman, Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
Performed by Peter Gabriel
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song
This song begins at the end (and through the end credits) of Babe: Pig in the City, the second and last film in this series about a sheep-herding pig who perseveres amidst other animals and humans with ulterior agendas. The title is derived from the famous quote said by Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) to reassure Babe: "That'll do, pig. That'll do."
“Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Hassen Sitam”, music and lyrics by S.D. Burman, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959, India)
Performed by Geeta Dutt (dubbing Waheeda Rehman)
Lyrics in Hindi - roughly, "Time Has Inflicted Such Sweet Cruelty On Us"
Song begins at 1:03:31 and ends at 1:07:51

In this romantic tragedy told in flashback, Suresh Sinha (Guru Dutt) is a director looking back on his life. Suresh is unhappily married to a woman whose in-laws look down on him because, to them, working in films is contemptible to their social class. Suresh meets a woman, Shanti (Waheeda Rehman), on accident and she is soon cast as the lead for his next film. They fall in love, but it is never consummated for various reasons. This song is the most explicit statement of that love in this film. How much of the scene's set-up is observable by the characters is up to the viewer's interpretation.
Group A participants include: @addaellis, @introspectivemeltdown, @memetoilet, @myluckyerror, @plus-low-overthrow, @shootingstarvenator, @themusicmoviesportsguy, @theybecomestories, @umgeschrieben, @underblackwings, @yellanimal. Seven others - including myself and my sister - are currently slated to be voting in Group A.
GROUP B
“Angela”, music and lyrics by José Feliciano and Janna Merlyn Feliciano, Aaron Loves Angela (1975)
Performed by José Feliciano
(English-language version) / (Spanish single version)
Played over the opening credits to this teenage drama that is partly a blaxploitation film, partly an interracial coming-of-age romance. The movie wasn't a hit, but the Spanish-language version of this song was received well in Latin America.
“Aren’t You Kind of Glad We Did?”, music by George Gershwin, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, The Shocking Miss Pilgrim (1947)
Originally performed by Betty Grable and Dick Haymes
(soundtrack version with Judy Garland and Haymes) / (modern arrangement far more faithful to how song sounds in the film)
Cynthia Pilgrim (Grable) is the top typewriting student from a business college in this period piece where the typewriter is the newest invention to sweep the business world. This song appears as Pilgrim and her boss, John Pritchard (Haymes), are about to go out on a date for dinner after talking about how society looks down on women in public without a chaperone.
“The Blues are Brewin’”, music by Louis Alter, lyrics by Edgar De Lange, New Orleans (1947)
Performed by Louis Armstrong and his band and Billie Holiday
(in-film version) / (Billie Holiday single)
After being evicted by the U.S. military from the historic Storyville district of New Orleans (the Navy had just opened a base in the area, and would not tolerate places of gambling, jazz, and prostitution nearby), the characters played by Armstrong and Holiday tour the country with a jazz band in tow. This song appears within a montage showing the passage of time.
“Dekhi Zamaane Ki Yaari / Bichhde Sabhi Baari Baari”, music by S.D. Burman, lyrics by Kaifi Azmi, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959, India)
Performed by Mohammad Rafi (dubbing Guru Dutt)
Lyrics in Hindi - roughly, "I Have Seen How Deeply Friendship Lies / I Have Seen People Abandon Me One by One"
Part 1 (3:44-8:27) / Part 2 (2:16:29-2:20:42)
Make sure to turn on the video’s English captions
In this romantic tragedy, Suresh Sinha (Dutt) is a washed-up director looking back on his life. In the first part, the song leads into the rest of the film - which is almost entirely a flashback. In brief, Suresh is unhappily married to a woman whose in-laws look down on him because, to them, working in films is contemptible to their social class. Suresh meets a woman, Shanti (Waheeda Rehman), on accident and she is soon cast as the lead for his next film. They fall in love, but it is never consummated for various reasons. Eventually, his career crashes after a box office bomb and her career is ascendant. Leading into the second part of the song, Suresh is penniless and working as an extra at the movie studio. Shanti recognizes him, wants to help, but he refuses to revive his career on the back of her success. Kaagaz Ke Phool has elements of autobiography, and Suresh's fate has parallels with what happened to Dutt after this film was released.
“End Theme from Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades”, music by Eiken Sakurai, lyrics by Kazuko Koike, Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades (1972, Japan)
Performed by Tomisaburo Wakayama
Lyrics in Japanese (translation)
Video provided is not safe for work (NSFW) due to stylized violence
Ogami Ittô (Wakayama) is a former, disgraced executioner for the Tokugawa shogunate who wanders the land with his young son. He is intent on exacting revenge on the clan that murdered his wife. This song is played non-diegetically after Ittô has slain dozens of a corrupt governor's bodyguards and walks onward, pushing his son in a babycart, away from the dead left in his wake. This is the third of six films in the Lone Wolf and Cub series.
"Happy Endings", music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, New York, New York (1977)
Performed by Liza Minnelli and company (that's Jack Haley - who played the Tin Man and was, at the time, Minnelli's father-in-law - roughly seven minutes in)
(use in film) / (soundtrack version)
It is highly recommended one sees how this song is used in the film. Bear with me: this song is part of a movie within a movie. Within that movie within a movie, there is another movie. "Happy Endings" is the title end song to a film called Happy Endings within New York, New York. Singer Francine Evans (Liza Minnelli) has made it big as a recording artist and caps off her hit film, Happy Endings, with this song. We see Francine's ex, played by Robert De Niro, in the audience as the film ends. "Happy Endings" is a homage/deconstruction to midcentury Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) musicals. It serves the film as "The Broadway Melody" does to Singin' in the Rain (1952) or the 17-minute ballet does to conclude An American in Paris (1951).
"Here They Come (From All Over the World)", music and lyrics by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, The T.A.M.I. Show (1964)
Performed by Jan and Dean
The link above provides the entire film. You only need to watch from 0:00-4:11. If you like music from this era or want to hear more, this film is highly, highly recommended.
This is the opening credits song to a concert film recorded over two days in Santa Monica, California on October 28 and 29, 1964. The Teenage Awards Music International (T.A.M.I. - yes, I know it's an awkward name) Show included many of the most popular musical stars of that time - almost all of them name-dropped in this song. Jan and Dean, a surf music duo, served as hosts (and performed during) the show. You folks are lucky that this is the only original song from this film!
“Moonlight Swim”, music by Ben Weisman, lyrics by Sylvia Dee, Blue Hawaii (1961)
Performed by Elvis Presley
In a musical packed end-to-end with songs, Chadwick "Chad" Gates (Elvis) has taken a job with a tour guide agency. On his first day, he drives his first clients - a school teacher (who not so secretly is attracted to Chad) and four teenagers (one of whom becomes smitten) - to their destination.
“On the Boardwalk (in Atlantic City)”, music by Josef Myrow, lyrics by Mack Gordon, Three Little Girls in Blue (1946)
Performed by Carol Stewart (dubbing for Vera-Ellen), June Haver, and Vivian Blaine
(original soundtrack) / (Dick Haymes single)
In this rarely-seen musical (20th Century Fox wasn't very good at promoting its back catalogue compared to some other studios, and the situation is worse now that they are owned by Disney), three chicken farmer sisters (Vera-Ellen, Haver, and Blaine) decide to travel to Atlantic City in hopes of marrying a rich husband after learning their aunt's inheritance is not nearly as much as they want. They sing this song as they arrive and check into their hotel suite - which they apparently have not looked up the rate for.
Those who listened to the soundtrack version... FYI, $9.25 in 1902 is $280 in 2020.
“Personality”, music by Jimmy Van Heusen, lyrics by Johnny Burke, Road to Utopia (1946)
Performed by Dorothy Lamour
(in-film performance) / (live radio performance)
In the fourth film of the Road to... comedy series, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's characters have just overpowered two Alaskan thugs with a history of murderous violence. As they enter a saloon dressed up as those two thugs, all of the patrons - in a town that only knows the thugs by reputation - shut up in terror. They are treated to a performance by Sal (Lamour), who is trying to find a map of a gold mine that the real outlaws supposedly have. A visual narrator (Robert Benchley) interrupts the scene before the song briefly.
“Please Don’t Stop Loving Me”, music and lyrics by Joy Byers, Frankie and Johnny (1966)
Performed by Elvis Presley
(in-film performance) / (single version)
Johnny (Elvis) and girlfriend Frankie (Donna Douglas) work on a Mississippi River riverboat as performers. Johnny is addicted to gambling and believes that another woman is spurring on his recent run of good luck. During a fit of jealousy-as-acting, Frankie accidentally shoots Johnny during a bit of musical theater (someone switched out the blanks for real bullets). This song occurs after Johnny has recovered from the accident.
"Wichita", music by Hans Salter, lyrics by Ned Washington, Wichita (1955)
Performed by Tex Ritter
This is the opening title song to this Western. It is one of many Wyatt Earp movies set before the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Earp (Joel McCrea) arrives in an otherwise lawless town of Wichita, Kansas where gunplay is rampant. In a radical move, Earp orders to seize the firearms of anyone living in or entering town - which doesn't sit well with some outlaws. This song is incorporated throughout the film's score.
Group B participants include: @cokwong, @emilylime5, @halfwaythruthedark, @maximiliani, @thewolfofelectricavenue, and @voicetalentbrendan. Twelve others - including me and my sister - are slated to be voting in Group B.
Contact me however you wish if you have questions or comments regarding MOABOS' processes or something specific about a song or a few. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are having difficulty accessing one of the songs (especially if it is region-locked) or if there is an error in the playlist.
I thank you all for your support for the Movie Odyssey, the blog, and for me personally - no matter how long I’ve known you or in what capacity. You will be contacted for the final round regardless of your participation here. If turnout in one group is lagging behind compared to another, I will ask some of the more senior participants to participate in the other group, too. No pressure if you cannot get to this, although I will be checking in as the deadlines get close. Stay safe and socially distanced, everyone.
TABULATION This preliminary round uses a points-based, ranked choice method which has been used since the first time I asked friends, tumblr followers, and family to help out. A respondent’s first choice receives 10 points, the second choice receives 9, the third choice receives 8, etc. The winner is the song that ends up with the most total points. The tabulation method used in this preliminary is used only as a tiebreaker in the final round (more on how the final is tabulated when we get there).
This tiebreaker will look slightly different this year.
Tiebreakers for above: 1) total points earned; 2) total #1 votes; 3) average placement on my and my sister's ballots; 4) tie declared

I wish RWBY had continued to show Yang learning to be calmer and assess situations. Instead we got that one scene in volume 4(?) where a guy tries to harass her, she gets a Zen moment. She's still angry and jumping to conclusions, and I will never be over how mad she was over bird powers. Like sometimes I rewatch the So This is Basically RWBY just for the scene where Ruby asks "so......what exactly is the downside of this?"
Exactly (that video is so cathartic lol). As said, RWBY seems to have a habit of showing us one (1) thing and expecting that to function as character development, rather than actually writing the character as different (or at least struggling) moving forward. What I find frustrating from both a fandom and writing perspective is how this feeds into the unequal expectations for each character. Meaning, Yang has this moment of calm but is otherwise just as hot-headed as always, and the characters don’t acknowledge this (implying acceptance of it, or they simply don’t care if she doesn’t improve) and the fandom emphasizes potential justifications:
“Well of course Yang will jump to conclusions about her Mom because that’s a deeply complicated issue for her. She’s also going to keep secrets to protect her. What teen wouldn’t. What? Yang is supposed to acknowledge how stupid stealing an airship is when the rest of the group doesn’t? Her hitting that bot was a knee-jerk reaction - she can’t help it. And trust Robyn did end up fine so really, can we fault her for that?”
There’s always an explanation for why she doesn’t need to improve now, couldn’t have possibly improved yet, isn’t responsible for her own improvement, etc. Which is understandable given the love of a character, but that same work doesn’t extend to the entire cast. Either within the story or without. If Ozpin ever fell back into his own flaw (keeping a secret) as Yang has, there would be absolute fury, not a compassionate “Well...” statement. If, after agreeing to follow Ruby, Qrow ever dares to question her again, we’re poised to expect feelings of betrayal and/or rejection. We saw in Volume 7 how Ironwood straight up is not allowed to make mistakes, despite most of his mistakes stemming from things outside of his control (Salem), things that are too big for him to have fixed by the time the group got there (Mantle), or are things the group themselves made worse (the resources plan). Meanwhile, with Oscar, we’ll have to see in Volume 8 whether he’s receptive to Ozpin at all and if so, how the group reacts to that support... It’s bad enough when a story tries to pass a singular instance off as character development, but it’s so much worse when, in the act of ignoring how the character has failed to improve, other characters face a great deal more heat for not living up to those expectations. The fact that RWBY has other complications like age - We’re encouraged to treat the group like adults but the fandom continually uses their ages as justification for why we can’t expect better of them - and gender - This is a woman-led show in a sea of male-dominated media, especially in these genres, which has resulted in a overly simplified “The girls are good and the guys are bad” morality, whether RT intended to write that or not - as well as protagonist status - We’re meant to be much more emotionally attached to the main group and are therefore encouraged to forgive them/root for them whether or not the show has done the work to make them into forgivable, likable people - certainly doesn’t help matters.

And The Award Goes To...
After seeing this suit AND this walk, I had to come up with something lol
Pairing: Chris Evans x Black Reader
Warnings: None
“Well thank you for speaking with us and good luck tonight!,” the interviewer, Zuri, smiled, opening her arms to give you a hug which you gladly accepted.
The way your nerves were right about now, you felt like you could use a million of them and would take one from anyone offering.
Being escorted down the red carpet, your emerald green, satin dress seemed to reflect the sun rays the way it shined with every step you took in your gold, strappy stilettos. With simple spaghetti straps and a v-neck, the material clung to you from your chest to mid thigh where the left side split open down to just above your polished toes to show your leg, equally shining thanks to Rihanna’s Fenty Body Lava and you’re hydrated melanin. Photographers call out for you to stop for pictures as the sounds of cameras clicking and flashing lights seem to come in waves.
“I don’t think I’d ever get used to this,” your best friend, Hazel, whispers to you as you both pose for a few pictures.
“I’m not used to it either, this is just my first award show,” you answer as you resume your walk down the remainder of the carpet to the inside of the building.
“First of many though! Trust me, you just getting started girl.”
Being called the breakout star of the summer, you hoped that more roles and invitations to award shows were to come. Ever since you were young, you always dreamed of accepting an Oscar or a Golden Globe, and yes even practiced your speech in front of your parents, which they of course recorded and tended to bring out whenever they wanted to reminisce on your childhood.
In all honesty though, yea the accolades were amazing and you wanted them, but if they didn’t come you’d still be ok. You loved acting and to be able to do what you loved every day was all that mattered.
Waiting for everything to start, you sat at your table talking with your director and a couple of your other cast mates, as well as took selfies with Hazel. Looking at the picture, you see a blurry, yet familiar figure in the background prompting you to turn around to see if you were truly correct in your thinking.
Sure enough, you were and began quietly freaking out.
In what looked to be a chocolate brown, velvet suit with a white button down shirt and black bow tie, there stood Chris Evans looking as amazing as ever and currently walking pass your table to get to his. You never though you’d be hypnotized by a walk, but here you were openly gawking and wishing his table was across the room so he’d have to do the movement a bit longer.
“Dang Cap, bring that walk this way,” Hazel speaks, pulling out her phone to record him walking away.
“Put your phone down creeper,” you laugh lightly smacking her arm.
“Takes one to know one Miss let me openly stare at my celebrity crush and his booty.”
———
“Looks like your award is next!” Hazel softly squeals lightly shaking your arm. “I wonder who’s presenting for it?”
As if hearing her question, the announcer introduces Chris as he walks out smiling with card in hand.
“Whoaa that’s crazy!! You could receive your award from THE Chris Evans!,” she gasps. You managed to keep it together as the camera panned to you, softly smiling and being gently nudged by your director making you giggle.
On the inside though, you were a nervous wreck. You were already worried about falling if you had to walk to the stage, but now you had to worry about literally falling in front of Chris and never being able to show your face again due to embarrassment.
“And the winner for best actress in a comedic performance is...Y/F/N Y/L/N!,” he reveals causing everyone to applaud and your table to go crazy. Quickly hugging the rest of your friends seated next to you, you slightly lift the un-split side of your dress so it won’t potentially get caught on your heels as you walk.
“Welp here we go,” you thought to yourself, making your way up the stairs. Being the gentleman that he was, Chris met you halfway up the steps offering his hand to help you the rest of the way.
“Congratulations!,” he sweetly whispers handing you the figurine, which surprisingly had a good amount of weight to it.
“I’m really gonna try not to cry right now but chances are I will so I apologize in advanced for that,” you start, causing a small amount of soft laughs to erupt in the room.
“First off, I want to thank God because he blessed me with this opportunity, and I want to thank my parents who sadly aren’t here because of the flu but I know y’all are watching and I love you!”
“I also want to thank my friends both old and new, my director James, the cast and crew, and everyone else in my life that’s supported me and helped me in any way whether small or large. Ok I’m gonna go backstage now and cry and hope you all have a good night!,” you finish with a small wave as you turn away from the mic, applause behind you as you make your way off the stage followed by Chris.
“That was a really nice speech,” he says, now beside you.
“Really? Thanks! I feel like I sounded like a rambling mess.”
“You might’ve felt that way, but I assure you, that’s not how it sounded,” he replies.
“Y/N! Congrats on the award! We need you to come this way for another short interview with the press,” a tall, slender man with glasses interrupts smiling as bright as the camera flashes coming from the room where the interview was to take place.
“Well I um guess I’ll see you later. Congrats again!,” Chris smiles.
“Thanks and yea see you later!,” you reply smiling as he walks away to return to his seat.
“Yep this definitely will take some getting used to,” you thought, walking into what felt like a sea of cameras and questions.
———
“Tonight has been surreal!! Just being here in midst of everything, you winning, AND getting said award from Chris Evans!!! If I were you I’d be dead right now,” Hazel says grabbing a glass of champagne off one of the trays being carried by servers.
“I know!! I feel like none of this is real and I’m gonna wake up any moment.”
“Well it is real and I’ll even pinch you to show you if needed. Or better yet we can get your new bestie Mr. Evans to do it.”
“He is not my new bestie, and I definitely would not ask him or anyone to pinch me,” you laugh sipping from your glass.
“Whoa pinching? What kind of party is this?,” you hear from behind you causing both you and Hazel to choke on your drinks.
You from utter shock and disbelief he heard that, and her from laughing at your reaction.
“Chris! Hi! Um sorry about that I-,”
“You don’t have to apologize, it’s ok. Also if you did ask me, that’d certainly be a first,” he laughs.
“Um Chris this is my best friend Hazel,” you introduce as the two shake hands.
“Nice to meet you Hazel. And this is my brother Scott, Scott this is Hazel and Y/N,” he responds to which Scott shakes both of your hands and congratulates you on your award. “The answer is probably obvious, but how’s your night?”
“Amazing! I don’t want this night to end!,” Hazel excitedly answers causing you all to laugh.
“I agree it’s amazing, but I don’t think everything’s set in yet. And this probably will sound weird but I feel like Cinderella and as soon as the clock strikes 12, I go back to normal.”
“No it’s not weird at all, like you said everything is kinda unbelievable and it’s still a bit shocking. I totally understand,” Chris lightly nods before drinking from the beer bottle in his hand. “Also can I add that I love that movie.”
“Same! She’s not my favorite princess though, but I still love the movie.”
“Who’s your favorite then?,” he asks, leaning on the table with his elbow.
“I have two. Overall, it’s Tiana but for the songs it’s Ariel,” you answer.
“Can you believe? 2 grown adults going on about Disney movies like kids,” Scott whispers to Hazel, to which she nods agreeing with him.
“You should see her on the weekends. When she’s bored, she watches videos about all the rides, parades, and stuff in all the Disney parks,” she adds, lightly laughing along with Scott at you and Chris’ excited expressions as you guys continue on with your conversation.
“Hey you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“That we head to the bar and let the Disney fanatics enjoy their time together?,” Hazel answers as Scott links his arm with hers.
“Exactly!”
“I have the feeling this is the start of a beautiful friendship,” she smiles holding up her glass as he clinks his with hers.
“And hopefully a beautiful relationship between those two,” he adds as they reach the bar.
“Wait? How did you know Y/N likes Chris?”
“She does?! I didn’t know at all, Chris kept talking about her at our table during the show and when we saw you guys here I suggested he go talk to her.”
“If they end up getting married, I’m expecting a shout out for the both of us for getting them together,” Hazel replies making Scott laugh as they cheers once again.
———
“So Y/N, the people need to know, how was your conversation with America’s golden boy?!,” Hazel asks joining you on the couch, plate full of waffles, eggs, and fruit in one hand as she holds out her fork pretending it’s a mic to your face.
“Girl you need to relax!,” you laugh lightly pushing her fork away. “But it was good, I mean he’s super friendly and we like a lot of the same things.”
“Yea Scott and I heard a bit of your conversation and let me say if there was a couples Disney jeopardy game, you guys would more than likely win.”
“Hey don’t judge us, it’s not our fault that’s something we like,” you laugh. “He said how he goes to Disneyland pretty much every year and said that I should come along-,”
“Umm say what now?!?! He invited you to Disneyland?!?!!!!,” she interrupts after momentarily choking on a piece of egg.
“I wouldn’t call it an invitation really. It’s like when you’re talking to someone about a nail place you go to and say how they should try it out sometime. Plus it was after I said I hadn’t gone since I was a teenager.”
“Either way you got invited by a guy who’s interested in you to Disneyland, which is a dream date of yours!!”
“Just because he was nice to me doesn’t mean he’s interested Hazel,” you reply taking a bite out of your omelette.
“Well let’s just say an EXTREMELY close source, aka his brother, confirmed that Mr. Evans was definitely into you and checking you out the whole award show,” she squealed.
Now was your turn to choke on your food.
“Really?,” you ask pulling yourself together. “He didn’t try to get my number or anything though so maybe it was just a ‘she’s pretty’ type like versus an ‘I really want to get to know her’ like.”
“I don’t think so, but we’ll see. Even still though he definitely invited you to Disney and you better take him up on that offer or I’ll smack you then go in your place!,” Hazel adds, picking up your now empty plates to put them in the sink.
“Noted,” you laugh now looking at the messages on my our phone. Of course there were the usual ‘congratulations!’ from family members, your team, and your other co stars who were unable to come to the show.
Although he was there, your director even messaged you telling you congratulations again on your award followed by one of the sweetest message you’d ever recieved saying how much he appreciated you on set and that you were surely about to change the acting game.
Y/N: Aww James, I was trying not to cry today lol!!! ❤️😭😭 that was so sweet and I thank you so much for giving me this chance that has surely changed my life forever!
😎Bond, James Bond🎥: You’re so welcome love and deserve it😘! Also I have some news...
Y/N: Ohh another project you want me to be in?? Wait I don’t have to give the award back do I👀?
😎 Bond, James Bond🎥: Lmao no not yet and no it’s yours🤣🤣. The news is a certain someone who you were talking to ALL night asked me for your number and I wanted to ask you first before I gave it out just to be sure
Y/N: 😳😳😳🤯
😎Bond, James Bond🎥: Mhmm 😏😏
Y/N: Lol yea it’s fine you can give it to him
😎Bond, James Bond🎥: Done! Have fun you two 😉😂!
You expected that he was probably busy and you’d more than likely hear from him later. However the running theme of your life recently seemed to be how nothing turned out how you expected.
???: Hey Y/N! It’s Chris
???: That is Chris from last night, in case you know another Chris lol
“Oh my gosh he’s such an adorable dork!,” Hazel gushes from over your shoulder, making you jump.
“Can I have some space ma’am?!”
“Oh sorry,” she innocently smiles going towards her bedroom. “If you need me, just call!”
Shaking your head as she exits, you turn your attention back to the screen in your hands and hoping that you don’t make a fool of yourself.
Y/N: Hey😊! And can honestly say I don’t know any other Chris’ lol
Chris: Lol ok good. I mean not that other Chris’ are bad or anything. Looking back at it, I should’ve just left it at “Chris from last night” my bad 🤦🏼♂️
Y/N: 🤣🤣 it’s ok. Exactly how many drinks did you have last night?
Chris:😶....lets just say I’m not totally hungover, but my head is hurting a bit 😂
Hearing you laugh to yourself from downstairs, Hazel contently sighs before turning on her laptop as she plops down on her bed.
“Yep, I can hear the wedding bells and thank you speech now,” she speaks to herself as she smiles.
A/N: So this turned out longer than I expected and not gonna lie, kinda didn’t know where I wanted to go with it by the time I got in the middle of it😓 lol but hopefully you guys like it!

the clothies
part two of my the office au! nearly 3k of race being love with a very drunk albert. this is based on 2x01 of the office, ‘the dundies’.
A studious person could say there were four types of managers. Jack Kelly was an exact combination of all of them.
The man wasn’t unlikeable, not in the slightest. In fact, he was almost funny whenever he wasn’t trying too hard. He cared for his employees and co-workers and gave his life for the company he worked in. He was determined to make a family out of the workplace, even if no one felt the same way. No one at all.
It didn’t come as a surprise that the New York branch was one of the youngest-employing ones in the company. Race was about to turn twenty-four and most of his co-workers rounded that number.
All except Les, of course. The kid missed out on all company parties and the blessed opportunity of alcohol. Such a shame.
Every February brought upon the New York branch the most dreaded celebration of all. The Clothies. That was its name. They didn’t even sell real clothes.
The mind of the great Jack Kelly worked wonders. In his first year as a manager, he got around the idea that if his employees got rewarded with worthless pieces of plastic once a year named out to ridiculous categories, then that would be an incentive for everyone and it would turn the New York branch around for magnificent results and numbers to come.
He thought it to be a success. People really just took every chance they got to get drunk.
Race didn’t even like the idea of getting drunk around his co-workers all that much. There were only a few people in there he’d actually call friends—there was Charlie, there was Smalls, there was Jojo…
“Hey, Racey!”
There was Albert, of course.
An arm was slung around his shoulders and he found himself smiling before even stopping himself. He tilted his head and saw a sea of freckles in a dangerously pale face.
“Hey, Red,” he said. Albert grimaced at the name and let go of him. “Excited about the Clothies?”
“Not really,” they said along with a long sigh. “Can’t possibly imagine what my award’s gonna say.”
For two years in a row, Albert had gotten the same award—World’s Longest Engagement. It wasn’t as funny as Jack thought it was. Race was sure Albert hadn’t even laughed the first time when it had only been six months. Now, it just seemed cruel.
Race nodded and patted their shoulder.
“Wanna watch the marathon with me? Twelve hours of footage,” they said, wobbling their eyebrows. “For free.”
Every year Jack made Albert watch through footage of his own video recorder of the many, many editions of the Clothies through the year. Albert and Race usually made popcorn and tried to guess the year by the number of layers Jack was or wasn’t wearing or how thick his New York accent sounded.
This year, however, Race had something in mind.
“You’ll have to live without me,” he said. Albert put a hand on their chest and gaped. “Gotta sort some things out with the boss.”
Albert shook their head, but stood up and headed to the conference room regardless.
“Traitor. Don’t get fired,” they exclaimed over their shoulder. Race smiled.
The closed door that lead to Jack’s office read a sign that said “all my gates are open 24/7”. Race couldn’t help but think, as he knocked on it, about how many levels of wrong that was.
This time, he was putting together a Rubik’s Cube. Literally. Piece by piece.
“Hey, boss,” Race said, peeking through the door as he opened it. “Got a second?”
With both feet on the desk, Jack perked up to see Race and immediately waved him inside, discarding his little do-it-yourself quickly.
“Anthony,” he smiled. “To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Still not my name,” Race said as he sat down in a chair in front of Jack’s desk. He looked at his hands for a moment and looked for the easiest possible way to formulate his request without messing it up. With Jack, one really never got a second chance at asking the same thing. The man had a surprisingly small attention span for a branch manager.
“Let me guess—“
“No,” he put a hand up. “See, tonight are the Clothies—yay, again—and I was wondering if you could maybe, I don’t know. Switch things up a little.”
“Yes,” Jack said.
“Because—” Race stopped and frowned. “Yes?”
The man in front of him nodded and shrugged. “I’m an entertainer. I gotta give the people what they want—I’m starting to think my Harlem Shake number is getting a little outdated.”
Race blinked his urge to sigh away. “That’s not—Yes, I mean, I think taking that number out would be good. But I meant something more specific.”
“Oh, sure. I’m always up to suggestions. What’s in your mind?”
“Well, some of the categories. Albert’s, in particular. Maybe you should change their award.”
Jack squinted at him. If it was anyone else, Race would feel busted.
“Why?”
“You know, man,” he sighed, glancing back at Albert’s empty desk through the blinds. “The whole thing with their engagement… It’s getting old.”
The man stopped to think for one moment. Race looked at him, expectant.
“I’ll see what I can do.”
“No, Jack, you have to—“
“Woah, look at the time. I have a meeting in exactly—five minutes ago. Thank you for this, it’s been great talking to ya, I really need the room right now. See you tonight!”
And he was up on his feet and brushing Race out the door before any of them could get another word out. Race looked at the closed door before him and sighed thoroughly. He was feeling the trademark defeat and exhaustion that any conversation with his boss made him swim in when, from the room closest to him, Albert’s laugh filled his ears.
He sighed again. Fuck.
If anything could make the day before the awards ceremony worse, it was that by some silent agreement everyone had to stay an hour later than usual. As Race watched the clock strike five, he glanced at Albert with plead.
“I wanna leave.”
“Leave, then,” they said, not looking up from where they were typing out a form on the computer. “And lose your job.”
Race pouted. “You’re no fun today.”
“Not ‘til I get drunk, I’m not. Or drunk enough to miss out on the award, at least.”
That was hard to believe. Albert was never really one to drink in office parties—not that Race knew them all that well outside of office-related life and events. Which wasn’t the point. The point was that picturing Albert drinking their head off just to avoid having a human reaction to Jack’s jokes later in the day was an amusing idea. It would also be entirely justifiable.
Still, Race didn’t quite buy it until later that night, when Albert landed by his side with a tray of empty shot glasses.
His eyes went wide.
“Wow. Hey there.”
He’d been fashionably late, which was a fancy way of excusing himself into missing the first minutes of the ceremony. It didn’t do him any well in the end—he arrived in the middle of a fight between Jack and the audio system.
“Hey,” Albert smiled. “You’re late.”
“You smell like college.”
They shrugged. “I didn’t go to college.”
Race bit his tongue, but Albert just burst out laughing. The night seemed promising enough.
“Where’s—”
Oscar appeared into Race’s field of vision as if summoned. He sat next to Albert and put an arm around their shoulders as another man whom Race only recognized as one of Oscar’s coworkers from the warehouse sat next to him.
“This is Albert,” nodded Oscar before planting a kiss in their cheek. “And that’s Albert’s friend.”
Classy. Race turned to the stranger. “I’m Race,” he extended his hand.
“Snaps,” the man greeted.
“That’s your name?”
“No,” he smiled. “Is Race yours?”
“Ah, touché.”
Race didn’t have to put too much energy into ignoring the couple in front of him because just when the night seemed to never take off, Jack found a way to plug in the right wire and a buzzing sound made everyone cover their ears. As the noise faded away, Jack stepped up on the platform and tapped on the microphone two times before speaking.
It was like a car wreck. Race and Albert had talked about this many times over the years. The Clothies were awful, but they weren’t a thing one could look away from.
“Alright, New York, let’s get this party started!”
On company events, Les was usually Jack’s right-hand-man. Or, right-hand-boy, rather. It was on company parties, when Jack was all by himself, that the delivery of his jokes got more painfully awkward to watch.
As he narrated a story about some clearly invented hot date with an HR representative, Oscar turned to Snaps.
“This is lame. Let’s go to Jacobi’s,” he said.
Snaps nodded. “Yeah, man. I’m out of here.”
“Uh,” Albert looked between them. Race looked at them and saw conflict in their face. Part of him wished they’d stay. Part of him knew they wouldn’t.
Jack seemed to take notice of this interaction, for he stopped his skit to face the table. In the way, he nearly tripped over his foot, nearly knocked someone off with the mic stand, nearly poured his drink over his shoes. Because he was Jack Kelly.
Race sunk in his seat as Snaps stood up beside him and Oscar and Albert mirrored in the seats in front.
“Um, guys, where’re you going?” Jack asked. Oscar and Snaps walked towards the door and Albert glanced at Race before looking at Jack. “Albert, the party’s just getting started.”
They shrugged apologetically. Race felt something burn in his chest.
“Sorry,” they said before running after Oscar.
Jack blinked two times before nodding and resuming his job as an entertainer to a very unamused crowd. Race looked at the door for a moment before turning to the table next to his. Finch and Charlie were immersed in conversation.
“Is that seat taken?” He asked.
Finch smiled at him. “Nah. You’re staying?”
As he stood up to sit back down in his new table, he sighed. “Gotta eat somewhere, right?”
It was one of those nights where time flew by slowly and quickly all at once, and Race wasn’t exactly paying attention. In either fifteen minutes or an hour, Jack managed to tell thirteen jokes, wear two different pairs of fake teeth, and give out exactly one award—Busiest Beaver to Buttons Davenport. She didn’t seem especially flattered when she got up to receive an award that read “Bushiest”.
Race was waving at the waiter for another round and accepting the failure of the already fairly tough night he was facing when the door flung open.
Albert walked in, brushing a hand through their hair. Their entire face was red and their jaw was set, and they ignored the number of inquiring eyes as they made their way to Race’s table. He moved to the side just in time to leave a place for Albert to drop their full weight down.
Jack thankfully didn’t seem to notice their mood, and simply continued with the evening as Albert planted both elbows in the wooden table and stared at a fixed point in it. Finch and Charlie looked at each other and then at Race before slowly standing up and moving to find a new table.
Speaking to an upset Albert was something to be done carefully. Race was a master at the skill, or so he liked to think.
“I thought you’d left?”
Albert looked at him with words behind their eyes, but they dissipated quickly as the tension left their body only enough to let them rest their back against the seat. They shook their head.
“No, Oscar just—I decided to stay.”
“Oh,” Race said.
They reached out for Finch’s abandoned half-empty drink and gulped it down in two movements.
“I’ll get a ride from Jojo.”
“Oh—kay. Okay.”
Albert didn’t move from Race’s side even after the seat in front of them was freed. They just turned to watch Jack’s impressions and ordered a full new round of drinks, successfully ignoring Race’s worried glances. There was a science to drunk Albert—the more they drank, the funnier Jack seemed to them. Which showed how out of it they really were.
In the following hour and a half, Jack made two slightly-out-of-line impressions, gave out the award of Hottest In The Office to Finch, and the award of Tight Ass to Katherine, their HR rep. Neither seemed really excited and their speeches were awkward, but Albert cheered both of them on like there was no tomorrow.
The clock was nearing 11 PM when Jack gave Race one knowing look that made him want to drown in his glass of beer.
“This next award,” the man started. Race anything but hid his face behind his palms. “It goes out to our own little Albert DaSilva. I think we all know what award Al is going to be getting this year.”
Even with Albert not facing his way, Race could tell when the drunken elation in their moves faded and left way for realization. He almost wanted to throw something at Jack to stop it, but he didn’t. Mainly because smacking his boss in the head with bar snacks seemed like a bad decision, no matter how much he had it coming.
They watched in silence.
“It’s the Plant Junkie award—‘Cause their desk always looks like a goddamn botanical garden, ha,” Jack announced. Race’s eyes went wide, and the man winked in his direction.
For a second, Albert scrambled for a reaction inside their brain, but with a little push from Race they stood up and marched enthusiastically to get their award.
Jack stepped aside as Albert stumbled their way up on the platform. From his seat bare meters away Race could see the shine in their eyes and the flush of their cheeks—they wouldn’t remember any of it in the morning. Which only made the following speech more amusing for the sober bystanders.
Albert stood in front of the microphone and shook the award in their hand.
“Wow, um. I have so many people to thank for this award,” they said. Race laughed and shook his head. He wasn’t sure how much of his love was filtering through his eyes as he watched them. “Okay, first off, my plants. Because I couldn't have done it without them.”
People clapped. It was easy. Everyone liked Albert, they were a likable, genuinely nice person. Race cheered along.
“Thank you,” they continued. “Also, um, let's give Jack a round of applause,” they exclaimed. Race perked an eyebrow and Jack looked at them, surprised. “Y’know, for hosting this tonight. It’s a lot harder than it looks. And also because he deals with Les every day.”
Race laughed out loud as people cheered again. Albert was about to step—or fall—out of the platform, but then they faced the microphone again.
“Right. I wanna thank God. God gave me this Clothie,” they said, solemnly looking at the piece of plastic with their name written. “And—I feel God in this Chili’s tonight.”
They mimicked a mic drop and yelled a loud “woo!” in celebration. People cheered again as Jack took their place and they excitedly jumped off of the platform and nearly lost balance. Maybe to make sure they didn’t fall on their head and get a concussion, Race stood up and went to their encounter.
When Albert seemed to extend their arms towards Race for a hug, Race went to catch them and was surprised by a kiss on the lips.
It was short-lived, for Albert fell out of balance moments later and had Jack and Jojo on them immediately. Jack was rambling about killing Albert with his jokes, and Jojo was more worried about checking for a swallowed tongue.
Race blinked and shook himself out of his thoughts immediately. His mouth tasted like alcohol and he grimaced a little at it. He also felt something close to guilt set on his lower stomach. He looked at Albert and sighed before smiling and brushing everyone away to help them stand up.
Albert just laughed and let themself be carried to a stool by the bar.
“It wasn’t that bad,” they said. Race was sitting next to them when he turned and waited for them to continue. “This year, I mean. It was kinda great.”
“Yeah,” Race smiled and shrugged. He intercepted Albert’s reach for a refill of beer and they pouted. “It was actually cool. Jack outdid himself with the impressions, and he called Finch hot—very publically—which was touching. And, we didn’t have to hear him sing his rendition of Tiny Dancer.”
As he spoke, Albert looked at him and nodded with a small smirk. Race looked around, then back at Albert, and they were still staring. He laughed awkwardly.
“What?”
“Nothing,” they said.
“Okay.”
“What?”
“I don’t know,” Race said, frowning. “What?”
Albert bit their lip and started laughing with their head thrown back. They balanced forward and hit their head on the counter. Race started laughing as well.
“Oh, my god. You are so drunk.”
As his best friend flipped him off, Race stood to grab Albert by the shoulders with one hand and get their coat with another. He glanced back at where Jack seemed to be setting up a karaoke machine and then made his way towards the door.
“C’mon, let’s get you a cab home.”

(Pt1) I just,,, is it bad that at this point I just feel exhausted with the Oscar bits and crumbs? Everyone is like “oh his development is coming just be patient!” But I’ve enjoyed him as a character since he first appeared and watching him get denied or overshadowed has just become exhausting
(Pt2) I feel bad because a episode like this would usually excite me!! We see the boi fight!! And he did good!!! I just kinda want to see him away from everyone else, like from jnr or rwby. Because at this point? I kinda feel like when he’s around them he’s used to help them, never the other way around, I’m just so tired
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Hello there anon-chan. Apologies for the super late response. Y’know, ironically enough your message reminds me of @ozcarpin’s post from a few weeks back after V7CH5 dropped. They too expressed the same sentiments. As a fellow Pinehead myself whose favourite RWBY Character is Oscar Pine, I share in your exasperation of watching him be obscured by other characters when it comes to receiving his own development.
While I didn’t become a full-fledged Oscar Stan until the start of V5, I still feel you. Despite enjoying V5 in my first watch of the season, even now, it still kind of bothers me that we spent the majority of that season mostly watching Ozpin in control of Oscar’s body or taking control during moments which could’ve been used to allow the PLOT to flesh out Oscar a bit more especially when it came to integrating him into the hero team.
And of course, it still bothers me to no end how they handled his side of the story back in V6 especially during CH9. But do you know what one of the most upsetting parts about this is, anon-chan?
Even if one tries to express their frustration regarding Oscar’s writing within the series, you will always get those one or two comments that say:
“…Quit your complaining about Oscar not receiving any development. He’s not the main character!”
I was reading through some of the comments left in response to ozcarpin’s post and I actually saw one or two folks hit them with that same remark and I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic for ozcarpin. It actually upsets me when other fans used that kind of remark to denounce criticism of Oscar’s treatment within the show. Mostly because, in my opinion, this remark misses the point trying to be made here.
Speaking for myself, this squiggle meister more or less falls into the same lane as ozcarpin. I am one of those Pineheads who hasn’t 100% been pleased with the way the show has treated Oscar and I’ve never really shied away from expressing my opinions in regards to that. However when I share my critiques of Oscar’s writing, I’m not implying that the Writers should make Oscar the main character of RWBY. That’s not what I’m saying.
I understand that Oscar is not a protagonist for RWBY. However, what I think some folks fail to miss is that Oscar is a part of the main cast or at least he’s supposed to be. When I look at Oscar, I see him in the same category as the JNR gang. In my eyes, JNPR have always been the deuteragonists of RWBY—the secondary huntsmen team of importance to complement our four main girls.
While RWBY hold the title of our four protagonists whose individual stories and team adventures help shape the core PLOT of RWBY, the narrative additionally follows the development of Jaune, Pyrhha (formerly), Ren and Nora since their stories make up the PLOT too.
As I mentioned in this post I made after watching the recent V7CH7, as a Pinehead, when I ask for the PLOT to focus more on Oscar as a character, I’m not implying that he should become the main character of RWBY. All I’m simply asking is that he should be given the same level of respect as a character as we’ve seen from others within the main cast. Because as I’ll repeat again, Oscar is a part of the main cast.
It is for this reason why I really enjoyed the recent episode so much. V7CH7, in my opinion, is the best I’ve seen this season utilize Oscar within a scene because rather than have him play background character to another character; this episode gave him some much needed attention. We actually got to hear Oscar express his thoughts and feelings in contrast with Ironwood’s and for me,it was really great.
This is what I’ve been hoping for. I just want the story to allow us as the audience to get to know Oscar more. To have him speak on screen, share his own ideologies and sentiments with other characters especially the ones he’s in alliance with. Maybe even see him use his opinions to support or challenge said characters on their views and see their reactions to it.
We spent so many episodes debating whether or not Oscar is a character within RWBY that this episode felt like a breath of fresh air. I haven’t loved an Oscar moment this much since his Dojo scene with Ruby back in V5.
But as much as I love the dojo-scene from V5, I can’t help but feel like that moment was more to help Ruby than Oscar. However, I still appreciate it a lot since it established a pinnacle moment in Ruby’s growing friendship with Oscar. I felt like I learnt more about Oscar as a person from that one conversation that he shared with Ruby back in Mistral than his entire runtime in V6; believe it or not. But this is just me.
There are people in this FNDM who genuinely hate Oscar. Who believe he’s a useless boring character or not a character at all BECAUSE of the way the writing has handled him up until now.
As a Pinehead, it’s honestly frustrating when I go into forum discussions or search Oscar-related content on YouTube only to discover videos discussing how problematic of a character Oscar is BECAUSE of the glaring issues with his writing.
Because whether anyone wishes to admit this to themselves or not, the writing for Oscar Pine has not been the best or at least it hasn’t been as good as it could be. It’s been sometime-ish at best. Some might even call it subpar. Thus he’s left feeling as less of a character since the writing has done very little for him up; unfortunately.
According to some folks with the FNDM community, Oscar’s biggest flaw right now is his lack of proper development by the show which lends to him feeling like less of a character. And sadly to admit…at this point in the story, I’m starting to see their point.
Going to back to what I said earlier about Oscar falling in the same lane of as JNPR, when it comes to the JNR trio, at least I can say that I know who Jaune, Ren and Nora are as characters. I can even say the same for Pyrhha. I know who these characters are because the PLOT actually paid attention to these characters when they needed focus and allowed me as the audience to get to know them.
But when Oscar needed attention to help flesh him out, instead it focused on other characters.
When we needed to see Oscar getting to know the team, it focused more on providing more insight into Ozpin’s character as a build up to the events of V6, I suppose. Even when Oz was removed from the story, the PLOT still didn’t shift gears and allowed us to see what was going through Oscar’s mind after what happened with Oz.
Instead, Oscar’s development happens mostly off-screen while the PLOT focused on other characters. And by the time we did get the chance to hear how he’s feeling, instead of actually showing us how Oscar felt, it’s said in a single line that makes the moment fall flat.
“…These past few days, I’ve been scared of the same things you were. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be me but I did some thinking, and I do know that I want to everything I can to help with whatever time I have left…”
Gee…how swell it would’ve been for us to have seen Oscar going through all those emotions over the course of those few days, am I right? But I guess that his feelings weren’t all that important if all we got from that is a throwaway line of dialogue while not receiving much of a reaction from the other characters to Oscar being perfectly fine with possibly disappearing one day.
After V6 and after having more time to think about the events of the last season,I’ve gone into V7 with a slightly more cynical approach.
In spite of what a few folks might interpret from my more negative opinions, I’m still respectable of the CRWBY Writers and appreciative of the effort they put into the ongoing story for RWBY.
However that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to remain honest in my opinions. In regards to Oscar’s presence within the show, if the Writers do something with his character that I genuinely liked then I will praise it many times over given how much I love it. Hence my admiration for the Ironwood and Oscar scene from V7CH7.
However, if the Writers do something with Oscar that I didn’t enjoy or I didn’t personally feel was as good as I would’ve liked it to be, then of course I’m going to admit that when asked of my views (case in point: V6CH9)
That being said, I’m not saying all of this to make it seem like I’m bashing you for your own opinions anon-chan and if I sound that way in my response then I humbly apologize.
What I’m basically saying is, as a fellow Pinehead, I hear your frustrations. On some level, I feel your frustration and exhaustion and share in it with some of my own. But in a hopefully much nicer tone that you’ve heard from others, I will say that perhaps there is a bit of truth to what others have said about waiting a little while longer for Oscar’s development.
What I mean by that is, perhaps we should at least give the full season a fair chance. I’m not telling you to bottle up your frustrations. As a matter of fact, to quote, Shannon McCormick—the VA of the other half of our Man with Two Souls—what I’m saying is let’s try and “keep the faith” fam.
As of now, we are at V7CH7. We still have 6 more episodes to go before V7 concludes. As I said, CH7 did real good on Oscar and since promise of this season being an exciting one for Oscar is still in the air, let’s at least see where it goes from here. Perhaps things might pick up for the third act?
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t starting to lose confidence for this season being a better Oscar-worthy one than the last until CH7 renewed some of my hope. . With Oscar advising Ironwood to quote, “talk to the people you’re most afraid to”, I’m hoping that this was an indication that we might be revisiting the plot point with Oscar confronting Ruby again about telling James the truth.
I’m hoping that CH7 isn’t the only episode we’ll get to hear Oscar speak his mind and it makes me interested to hear what he hopefully has to say for CH8.
So yeah, to reiterate—I know it might be a little tough fam but, let’s try and hold strain till the end of season.
Admittedly, V7 is still pretty young and there have been elements to Oscar’s character and overall purpose in the plot of this season that have been teased a little for part of this season that I’m looking forward to seeing come to fruition:
Oscar confronting Ruby about revealing the whole truth to Ironwood (possibly with the last question from the Lamp of Knowledge)
Oscar unlocking his semblance which has been alluded to be a ‘great and powerful’ one that would possibly be the envy of his comrades, according to Ruby Rose.
Oscar receiving more clarity about the nature of the Merge from Ironwood (since he seems to know more about that).
Oscar reconciling with Ozpin within his mind and aiding in his reconciliation with the hero team.
Oscar helping Ironwood with his Baobab—possibly at some point suggesting that Atlas finds a way to get in communication with the kingdom of Vacuo to seek aid before their inevitable fall since Tyrian mentioned that’s what will be needed to thwart Salem’s plans for Atlas.
Oscar officially joining JNR and reviving their original huntsman team (possibly JNPR 2.0 or ALPN—one of those two, I dunno. My money still remains vehemently with JNPR 2.0)
Will these subplots actually be done? And if done, will it actually be good? Will it be disappointingly bad again? Or maybe it might be surprisingly better than we ever hoped for our boy? Will this be the case or not?
Don’t really know, to be honest. I couldn’t tell you even I wanted to. The best thing we can do for now fam is to wait and see what the rest of the story brings for Oscar and then make our own final judgments based on that once the story is fully complete. That’s pretty much all I can say.
I’m not sure what your thoughts on the recent episode were but for what it’s worth, I’m hoping that it might’ve renewed some of your hope for Oscar this season too? Even if it’s just a smidgen.
But let’s wait and see fam. We’ve got a cordial dinner episode with Formal Oscar coming up to look forward to. Here’s to seeing what that episode brings for us Pineheads.

Why I enjoy The Tower Boss Battle
I find the boss battle with the Boss of Tower Corp to be an amazing piece of storytelling. From how it’s introduced to the mechanics, to just how it flows. And I’m gonna talk about all that under the cut. (also ignore the fact Lore keeps changing colors in these. I got a mod as a gift based on my Tower Lore and Haven’t removed it).
First, let’s talk about the intro. We’ll start off after OScar tries to kill you. You enter this big room with a desk as big as you are, surrounded by video screens showing the employees working. You’ve come to the Boss’ office.
Everything about this place screams power -the giant chair, the monitors watching everyone, the desk with spikes that’s so big you can’t actually see above it. Everything here screams power and makes you uneasy. And who is it that’s sitting in the turned away chair? The boss of Tower Corp, who is revealed to be your mother.
Look at how uneasy Lore looks when the chair turns around. He looks terrified of her and he’s been in this room for less than a minute. She hasn’t even done anything. This visceral reaction from Lore from someone we have only seen once makes the player dread this even more - why is he so scared; what can she do to him?
The next thing you notice is how quickly she changes her tune when she’s talking. 1st she says something that shows her true feelings about you - hatred, disgust, scorn - and quickly hides it with sweeter, nicer words; making you either only see the 2nd text or wonder if you truly saw the 1st set. You start to wonder if what you saw happened (which will be a common theme in this essay). This is a pretty common tactic among abusers - making their victims doubt the truth. They love to change the truth and past events, often telling their victims the bad version of events (the truth) were just dreams.
Lore’s reaction to past bad events suddenly clicks in your mind. He denies things that are right in front of him - the Barghest, Binder, the Nightmare area. His immediate response is to ignore it, deny the bad things are happening and say they’re just a bad dream. It is a common tactic for young kids to do this, but not as heavily as Lore does. But this interaction helps paint this reaction in a new light - it isn’t a childish wish, it’s a coping mechanism for Lore. This is how he’s learned to handle the worst parts about his life. But he can’t change the truth. The truth is there, caught between the sweet words and the repressed thoughts - and she shows this when Your father appears.
She finally shows her hostility openly, revealing the darker thoughts beneath her nicer words. She sees these two as beneath her. And her abuse becomes physical when Lore’s dad tries to protect him. She throws him into a wall and viciously states, “he got what he deserved,” before quickly stating, “he’s just having a time out, honey.”
And she does this right in front of Lore. This fact is vital to this battle - she did tangible, physical damage right in front of him. She did something that Lore can’t fully deny happened like he can with her insults and thinly veiled threats.
And this causes him to act out against her.
Then the battle truly begins. It starts off by tricking you into believing it’ll be like the Barghest, bringing up a battle box that’s stylized for her and you.
And then she completely destroys the arena.
Her line here says exactly why she does this: she doesn’t want him to have equal influence and power in this fight. We’ve already fought on this battlefield before, so the battle box would have given us an equal playing field. Abusers hate it when their victims are in any place that’ll give them some amount of equal power to them. She’s the one who’s supposed to have all the power, all the cards. She’s the boss, and he’s just a pathetic, worthless, spineless whelp. And just for a second he goes back into this role in her power scheme.
And that little change changes how she acts too. She goes from her more monstrous and unhinged form...
To her calm and controlled one, pushing the buttons she’s placed into him to get the reactions she wants from him.
Causing him to feel powerless, just like when the Artifact appeared for the 1st time.
And we finally get to the meat of this battle: the memory scenes. She brings up a memory using a lie, and you have to choose the truth. Not matter how cruel or painful it was - even if you regret it. You need to tell the truth in these instances.
And by doing so...
He hurts her. He damages not only her health bar, but the amount of power she has on this field. As you destroy her health bar Lore’s weak bark to into a resounding bite. He finally, after all these years, lets out his own words and defends himself and by using her own power against her - words. But unlike her he uses the truth. He does this several times, destroying her health and influence until she’s at 50% health.
And by then she is. desperate. She make up a lie that the player can immediately see through, hoping she can get the power back. And while this lie is weird, it makes sense from a power play oddly enough. After all, who would lie about someone’s death?
But it doesn’t work. And the anger Lore has against her deflates, leaving him feeling sad at how pathetic this battle has become. His mother has gone from the woman who could make him cry from fear just by being in the same room as him, to a pathetic jerk - a regular schoolyard bully in terms of strength.
She’s lost... and her health bar isn’t even gone yet. She’s lost because throughout this battle Lore has been slowly but steadily been detaching her influence on him, removing her hold over him. She’s lost one of her victims...
And she realizes it.
She changes the area around her and asks you a simple question, hoping to make you feel guilty and stop fighting back.
And the answer Lore gives... I’m gonna be honest with you... that one hit close to home. I’ve had a bad relationship, one that destroyed my trust for a long time; yet I can’t bring myself to hate them. I tried to for awhile, hoping that would make it hurt less; but it didn’t. Lore... Lore says how I feel now better than I can.
