Marked for Carnage - Chapter 1 (Juice Ortiz x OC Fic)

Marked for Carnage Masterlist

A/N: This is chapter 1 of my Juice Ortiz x OC multi chapter fanfic. I am hoping to mesh this story line with all 7 seasons of SOA. This is an 18+ fic so if you are under 18 please do not interact or read. The themes may not hit 18+ for a few chapters but I intend them to as the story progresses. I apologize that there isn't much Juice x OC in this chapter, I was really wanting to set a foundation for my OC and how she is tied into this world. My asks are open if anyone has any questions about my OC. Also I aplogise if there are any errors, I have a toddler and a baby so I'm doing this on the fly. I hope you enjoy :)

If there was one thing that Veronica Winston wished for it was that she had taken the job offer from Mercy General rather than St Thomas. Sacramento was close enough to Charming without being too close, but - being the push over that she was - she had let her father talk her into moving home. "Nothing's more important than family," he had stated, using her brother's recent release from prison to really drive the point home. Now here she was, stalking the hallways of St Thomas Hospital, the scent of antiseptic flooding her nose, as she followed the directions given to her by the admin staff to the nearest elevator. She had just about ran from the desk when the lady behind it asked if she was related to "those Winston's."

She pulled her long, dark hair out from the ponytail she'd put it in, hoping it would provide some kind of barrier between her and anyone who may recognize her. It had been nearly 10 years since she had last stepped foot in Charming. Her stomach had been lead weight since she had driven past the welcome sign at the edge of town. She jabbed the elevator button as she stopped in front of the closed doors, tapping her foot impatiently. She quickly scanned the area behind her, regretting the action as soon as her eyes met his. Jax Teller. Quickly she looked away and hoped that he hadn’t seen her.

"Ronnie?" She sighed when he called her name. Shoving her phone into the pocket of her scrubs she turned and smiled at him. "Hey Jax," she sent a silent prayer to the elevator gods that the stupid thing would hurry up and arrive. "Jesus, how long has it been?" he asked, pulling her into a quick one armed hug. "Nearly 10 years," she shrugged, kicking the toe of her shoe on the linoleum. "Yeah I guess so… your Pops didn’t say anything about you being back in town?" he asked, adjusting his cut. Her eyes found the Vice President patch sewn there. She raised her eyebrows. "I ah… asked him not to tell anyone. Ope too." Jax cocked an eyebrow and angled his head in question. "Alright…" he murmured. "I'll keep this under wraps then." Ronnie smiled appreciatively.

"You visiting someone?" she asked. His face dropped and suddenly she regretted asking him. "My kid is up in the NICU. He had surgery last night." Ronnie sighed and shook her head. "Shit Jax, I hope everything's ok." He shrugged and glanced down the hallway. "He's looking ok. Strong little guy. Shit with Wendy ya know…" he shrugged. "Damn, she still not got her shit together?" she asked. Jax shook his head. "Well he is a Teller. I'm sure he will pull through." Jax grinned proudly and nodded. "Well, you should come by Gemma's place sometime. She's still in the same house. I'm sure she would love to see you," Jax began to make his way down the hallway, throwing a wave behind him as he left. "Yeah, sure," Ronnie mumbled half heartedly. The elevator doors finally opened and Ronnie got in, pressing the button for the bottom floor. She found the doors she was looking for, the sign above indicating that she had reached the morgue. Of course, it would be strange to admit that she felt at home in a morgue. Which is why she never said it out loud. But it was true. Pulling her hair back into it's ponytail she walked through the doors, ready for a fresh start.

10 hours later Ronnie stood in the parking lot, stretching her back as the balmy early evening air settled around her. It appeared that being an assistant medical examiner in Charming wasn't going to be as fast paced as her previous location. She had spent part of her morning reviewing the one case they currently had open - a hit and run that had happened in the Charming jurisdiction although only by literal centimetres - and then the rest of her time she archived historical paperwork and counted down the minutes until her scheduled breaks. Ronnie groaned at the pain in her back, cursing herself for sitting with shitty posture for her whole shift, when suddenly someone cleared their throat. She turned and spotted the row of Harley's parked against the curb.

A guy around her age, with golden brown skin and a mohawk with two tattoos inked either side of it, sat on the bike at the very end. He was sporting one of the most gorgeous smiles she had ever seen and he was directing it at her. Ronnie's stomach buzzed, but she told it to pipe down when she spotted the cut she was wearing - one with a patch identical to her brother and fathers. She looked around in case he was looking at someone else, but they were the only two souls in the lot. "Nice ink," he said, jutting his chin in her direction. She looked down at her right arm, as if noticing the various designs tattooed there for the first time. Feeling her face warming, she met his stare. "Thanks, you too," she murmured, before walking to her car and hastily getting behind the wheel. Putting the key in the ignition she started it up, cursing and looking back at the man on the bike in her mirror as the engine coughed and sputtered before starting up. Pulling out of the lot, Ronnie began her journey home.

Juice smirked as he watched the black Toyota SUV pull out of the hospital parking lot. He had never seen the woman who had driven it away before, but the fullness of her hips and the soft curving of her waist had him wanting to see more of her. Juice would admit that it didn't take much to rev his engine but the way she had raised her eyebrow at him in indifference, how her tattoos covered the soft looking skin of her arm and the groan she let out as she stretched her back… almost had him adjusting himself in his pants. "Hey idiot," Tig smacked him up the back of the head. "What's got you so goddam happy?" Juice only grinned and shook his head. "Just thinkin' about Sack and that deer." Tig laughed and pointed straight at him. "Bet you're glad you're not the bottom of the food chain no more, huh?" Juice nodded as he watched the rest of his brothers exit the hospital, strapping his helmet on and starting up his dyna.

Ronnie sat on the small sofa in her loungeroom, an open beer on the coffee table and a microwaved dinner on her lap. She aimlessly flicked through channels, stopping briefly on the local news channel when she saw the headlines "San Leandro Warehouse Fire, Multiple Deaths." "Jesus Christ," she mumbled, taking a sip of beer. Suddenly, her phone ringing pulled her attention from the tv. Flicking it open, she saw her father's landline number and answered. "Hey Pop," she smiled. "Hey sweetheart," her father's rough timber came through the receiver. "How was your first day?" Ronnie smiled. She had missed this. Her father only really called once every couple of months when she had been gone from Charming, and she was certainly guilty of avoiding calling him. But since being back he seemed to really be interested in what was happening in her life.

"It was good dad, same shit different state really." Piney laughed. "Well that's good to hear, Ron, good to hear." She rolled her eyes at the nickname. "Listen, I was going to head over to Opie and Donna's place for dinner. Why don’t you come too? See the kids and say hello," Piney trailed off, leaving the buzz of the phone line ringing in Ronnie's ears. "I don’t know dad, I mean… I've already had dinner and," she paused, blowing out a sigh. "I don’t think Ope would want me there." Her father grunted on the other end, no doubt rolling his eyes identically to the way she had moments beforehand. "He's your brother. Of course he wants you there," he said. Ronnie closed her eyes. "Alright, I'll come see them. Do you need a ride?"

Ronnie pulled up out the front of her brothers house, parking her car next to Piney's trike. She made her way up the path to the front door, wringing her hands together in anxiety. She tersely rapped her knuckles against the door, her stomach in knots. Donna pulled the door open, her eyes widening at the site of her sister-in-law. "Veronica!" she exclaimed, glancing back into the house. "I didn’t know you were coming," Donna said, awkwardly smiling. "Oh, shit sorry, I thought dad might have said something. He kind of… invited me I guess," Ronnie said. Trust Piney to not say shit. "It's fine," Donna stepped aside, motioning for Ronnie to enter. "Come in. I've just served dinner, are you hungry?" Ronnie shook her head as she entered the house. "Nah I already ate. Thanks though." She continued to blindly follow the hallway, hoping she was going the right way.

The hall opened up into the dining room and Veronica stopped short as she saw Piney, Opie and her niece and nephew, Ellie and Kenny, sitting at the table with plates in front of them. "Hey," Ronnie cleared her throat. "Hey Ope. Hi Ellie, Kenny." She waved at the kids. They awkwardly waved back, glancing at their dad. Opie dropped his fork, making Ronnie and the kids jump as it clattered against his plate. "Ope?!" Donna started from behind Ronnie. "Not hungry," he grunted out before he made his way out the back door into the backyard, slamming the door behind him. The silence in the room was deafening as Ronnie internally fought with what she should do next. She smiled at the kids again before she followed her brother through the door. Opie sat on a porch swing that was in the back corner of the backyard, a lit cigarette between his lips.

Ronnie made her way over to him, her black boots scuffing along the short patched of turf and dirt. "Those things will kill ya, you know," she motioned to his cigarette. Opie ignored her, taking a long drag. "Look, Ope…" she began, pushing her hands into her pockets. "I know you’re not my biggest fan right n-" "You really think you can just come back like you didn’t just drop off the face of the earth for 10 years?" he cut her off. Ronnie sighed, running her hand over her hair, gathering it over one shoulder. "Dropping off the face of the earth is slightly dramatic, don’t ya think?" Opie met her eyes, his mouth a hard line. "Dad was already sick before you left and you just disappearing only made him worse. You missed my wedding!" he took a another draw of his cigarette. "My kids hardly even know their Aunt…" he laughed without humour and shook his head. "And you just walk in and say hi? You really think that would be it?"

Ronnie sighed and sat next to her brother on the porch swing. "I'm… I'm sorry Ope. I couldn't stay," she cracked her knuckles, habit her mother always scolded her for when she was little. "I honestly didn’t realise I'd hurt you this bad." Opie shook his head, knocking his knee against Ronnie's. "You're my baby sister," he mumbled. "We already had so much time apart after mom and dad divorced. It felt like I had gotten you back for a little while and then you just took off." Ronnie's heart sank. She never gave her brother much credit for just how much he loved his family - although he didn’t always show it. "Shit Ope. You know I didn't do it to hurt you. I had to get away. Away from," she swallowed thickly, her skin crawling. "Him." Opie scoffed. "You know we wouldn’t have let him put his hands on you. Me, Pops. Shit even Jax would put a bullet in his head before he let you get hurt."

Ronnie shook her head. "But he did put his hands on me Ope. Distance," she sighed. "Distance felt like the best option. And this place. This town," she motioned with her hand. "Everywhere I went it felt like him. Felt like he had tainted it somehow. Even being back now," she shivered, running her hands up and down her arms. "I'm sick to my stomach Ope. He could pop up anywhere." Opie turned to his sister, his stare cutting her off. "You see one glimpse of him, you tell me. I won't let that shit stain near you." Ronnie smiled flatly, patting Opie's back and standing. "Yeah yeah, I'll put you on speed dial," she smiled. Opie huffed a laugh and stood. Ronnie smiled and pulled him into a brief hug. "Still not okay with you going ghost," he said. She nodded, pulling away. "I know. But I'm here now. And I'm gonna make up for these last 10 years."

Ronnie walked arm in arm with her father to where their vehicles were parked. "Well after your brothers tantrum, that all seemed to go okay," Piney said, leaning over to kiss his daughter on the head. "Yeah Pops, you know Ope. He's soft at heart. Won’t be long and I'll be back in his good books," she smiled, watching Piney climb aboard his trike. "You working tomorrow sweetheart?" he asked, buckling his helmet on. She nodded, unlocking her SUV. "Yeah I'm always working." Piney smiled, his old heart warming knowing there was no longer distance between him and his two kids. "Alright, I'll follow you home. Make sure you get there safe." Ronnie began to protest and then remembered her conversation with her brother. "That would be great, thanks Pop." She slid into the drivers seat of her car and tried to start the engine. The car coughed and chugged once before it conked out completely. "Piece of shit," she slammed her hands against the wheel. Piney lifted his arms in a questioning manner. She jumped out. "Car won’t start." Piney motioned back to Opie's house. "Get your brother to drive you home, I'll get someone from TM to come tow your car to the garage tomorrow." Ronnie sighed and bid her father farewell before she made her way back up the path towards Opie's house.

Favorite sims death?

I've only ever seen drowning, fire, and old age in my game (so boring, I know) but I think I have to go with Murphy Bed for sheer "unlikely but plausible" horror.

Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

Maxis Match with a little soupçon of semi-realism, particularly with hair. I just love that classic Pooklet shine.

Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?

No way -- the Townie Body Diversity Project is one of my favorite mods for a reason! We need more fat sims! If I could have one no-questions-asked Sims 2 wish granted, it would be more diverse bodytypes for all existing meshes (dream on, I know).

Do you use move objects?

Who doesn't? I basically only have it off to place diagonal doors and windows.

Favorite mod?

This is such a hard question because there are /hundreds/ of tiny QOL mods that add up into such incredible gameplay. But I'm going to go with either the Community Time Project or Skilling on Community Lots! The latter especially makes so many community lots... actually worth it. I don't think I could play without it. Why bother otherwise?

First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?

I think I actually got Nightlife before University and I loved it. Everyone was a vampire and had the most expensive car. Life was simple and good.

Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?

Live as in "we're going live!" The other way feels so bizarre in my mouth.

Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made?

I will always have a soft spot for an alien sim named Laika from many, many neighborhoods ago. She was my icon for a long time!

Have you made a simself?

Only when I was younger! I like The Sims (and most media, tbh) to be as indulgent and escapist from my own life as possible. Like, what am I doing there?? I have the same reaction to self-insert fanfiction too. What is my purpose in this narrative? No thanks.

What sims traits do you give yourself?

For TS2: Lazy, Playful, Pleasure Aspiration.

For TS3: Vegetarian, Absent-Minded, Good Sense of Humor, Neurotic, Over-Emotional 🥲

Which is your favorite EA hair color?

I assume this is a question tailored to one of the other games, lol. As a kid I always loved shortslick in red because it was a slightly different shade than the other red hairstyles in the game, and it felt like the closest I could get to a new hair color without CC (which I didn't know how to download).

Favorite EA hair?

I really love the paperboycap hairstyle that came with Apartment Life! I wish there were pookleted defaults of it that just retextured the hair and kept the hat. Sometimes I use it anyway even though it doesn't match the rest of the hair in my game. It's cute!

Favorite life stage?

I actually really, really love the Child life state! There is so much that children can do (painting! gardening! cooking!) and it feels like after a toddler life state that doesn't have much variety between sims, you finally get to get a feel for what kind of person they're going to be. Plus, so many cute social interactions between other children and their parents. I'm always sad to see them grow into teens :(

Are you a builder or are you in it for the game play?

Both! I'm honestly not a very good builder and often get impatient because I just want to play and take pictures. But then if the world doesn't feel "real" or visually appealing enough, I get frustrated because the gameplay isn't as satisfying. I constantly have to force myself to stop and focus on building so I don't overshoot on the playing in a way that feels dissatisfying. Fun hobby.

Are you a CC creator?

No, but I have a lot of practice downloading things :)

Do you have any simblr friends/a sims squad?

I've never been in the Sims community consistently enough for that, but there are plenty of names that give me the happy little "ah, you! 🥰" thought bubble over my head for when I see them on my dashboard!

I have a pair of plumbob earrings! They're understated enough that I feel like I can get away with wearing them to work. Someone actually correctly ID'd them once, too!

No, editing pictures and posting here is enough of a timesink on its own. But I love watching speedbuilds!

How has your “sims style” changed throughout your years of playing?

Wow, so much. If this is about visuals, I didn't really have a cohesive style until I stumbled upon GOS in 2007 or so. The grungy look and my emo phase were like a wine & cheese pairing for the ages. When I got back into the Sims again in college in 2012, I'd shifted to a brighter style bordering on cartoonish (hello snapdragoned psd!). I think now I'm a sitting somewhere a little more muted, but hopefully still fun to look at ��

If this question is geared more towards play style, I'm playing in rounds for the first time in... ever. I used to just wander into households and play until I got bored, or focus only on one family. What a difference it makes! I don't think I've ever been so hooked/consistently eager to play.

Don't make me pick! There are a mind-boggling number of active creators out there still making beautiful, functional content. I adore and appreciate all of them! The game still feels so new and fresh. It was such a treat to come back to after a long hiatus.

How do you edit your pictures?

I should have read ahead before I mentioned the PSD, lol. I use Greenshot to take screenshots, then manually resize them in an old, super legal copy of Photoshop. Then I run a batch Photoshop action (sharpening, brightening, making colors more vivid) on them. Done and dusted.

What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next?

I guess I'll use this section for my dream mod. I would love more crafting benches/craftable items and more hobby options for the Freetime hobbies! Or a new Supernatural life state.

I would love to see a mesh edit of the fireplace from EL, with the weird rocks replaced by the wood from the SE fireplaces! Bonus points if there's also a version without the weird box and shelf (so just the main fireplace body and chimney).

I’ve got a build mode submission for the wishlist that I’ve been looking for for a long time; I’d really love a wig stand with some hairstyles that can go on top if possible. I’ve seen it done by alpha creators but the only MM one I found, the download link no longer works and it broke my heart

Fantastic idea. Let's give it a shot! I would love to see if a creator could and would be able to create a maxis-match classic Ballet Workout Set. Including two simple Tutu's one classic short the other one long. A classic leotard, wrap top, wrap skirt, ankle leg warmers as well as a pair of thigh high ones. All in classic ballet colors black, white and pink. ;) Nothing fancy! If the creator wants some examples what I mean I could provide pics. But that would be so dope! ❤️

#SSSWish I'm half Filipino, but I hardly see any Filipino content in the Sims Community. I would love to own a Maxis Match Barong or Maria Clara dress for formal events in the game. I think it would be a great way to add more representation in the game, especially when I know there are a handful of PilAms and Pinoy players. Thanks for hearing me out, and thanks for all the work you do to make this games playable. I really enjoy all your hard work!

#SSSWishlist hello! I would love if cc creators can consider making more patterns for Kimono/Yukata (traditional Japanese clothing). I find the in-game versions kinda bland, and there are not many floral Kimonos even though its commonly seen in Japanese festivals. Would appreciate if there's Japanese hairstyle cc with big flowerly accessory to pair with the Kimono too! Same for the male Yukatas, just not floral print maybe. If it's not too much, children's version is also appreciated!

For the SSS Wishlist, I would Love to see a set of three to four hairstyles, all with the same texture. Something like long hair down, a ponytail, and an updo, all with the same wavy or curly or straight texture, all with the same bangs or whatever. Just something that could be used to look like my sims change hairstyle now and them.

Sorry I wasn’t to sure where to put the hashtag #SSSWish or where to submit the wish.

My wish is to have more swatches for the snowboard and skis. If there could be more LED designs, interesting designs and the swatches for kids for T-E boards. It would be great.

The other wish would be to have more Kimono designs in Maxis Match and/or recolors with more patterns. There are so many patterns that I have seen while looking at real life kimonos and there are so many patterns, styles and colors that are missing in the game.

This seems like a fun idea! What I have been wanting for ages (like since TS2 era ages) is a hair style that completely covers one eye, like Violet at the start of The Incredibles. Most of the peekaboo bangs hairs I've seen are a little *too* stylish and I mostly just want one where someone is clearly trying to cover up half their face with it.

So, there's still no ways of writing books off-grid that I know of, so I think a journal or typewriter or, I don't know, even a magical computer working on batteries would be great, I would just really love to write and publish books off-grid... I would love to see more horse poses with tack. Severinka’s horses are beautiful but it drives me crazy, posing sims on horseback with the illusion of tack (bridles, saddles, etc) I would love to see some Severinka shaped tack be made. Poses would be a bonus!

#SSSWish This is an amazing idea! I'd love to see some powerpuff cc, like HIM's dress or Mojo's hat. There are lots of dresses and hairs for the girls (and the rowdyruffs) but I can't find anything that really fits with the other characters. Thank you!!

#SSSWish - I would love to see a someone put together clothing that accurately reflects the Starfleet uniforms seen on the television shows, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (collar version), "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (colored shoulders) or the later movie uniforms (grey shoulders w/ colored undershirt). I've seen people asking for these uniforms for quite some time now, and I think, if done well, they could be a popular download. A separate chest combadge accessory would be nice too.

Hey there, that #SSSWish thing is a super cool idea! I do have a wish too - I would love to see the EL utility jumpsuit converted for male framed sims. It can be unlocked by creating an override and unchecking the frame restrictions in S4S, but then the body changes to a female frame. So if anybody out there could do that properly, I'd be extremely grateful :3

#SSSWish i've been looking all over for a version of a torc to use in my historical plays-- it's an old celtic type of necklace, made of iron, sort of twisted into a collar around the neck... i've seen sims 3 versions of one floating around, so if someone would even be so kind as to convert one of those to the sims 4 i would be so happy!!!

#SSSWishlist i know i already saw some people here ask for more yukata/kimono swatches here and i would like the say i really do think we need them (not just for the adults but the younger ages too, id like for the toddlers kimono not to have the hifu? vest as well but that sounds more complicated).

My Super Secret Wish is a mod, or even a tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from shying away from hugs they ask for during the “Check Toddler” interaction. It is *so* irritating to see a toddler respond to a❓with a ❤️ and open arms then step back, often with a 💔, and push the adult away. I’ve tried to stop it with MCCC but no luck.

One of my favorite parts of the game is creating a restaurant or a vet clinic, but the employees are impossible to keep satisfied and they all eventually quit. It would be nice if there was a way to keep them permanently satisfied, or at least make it easier. There is a mod for this but it is extremely outdated and doesn't work anymore. If anyone could update it or make a new one that would be great! 😁

Hi ! There is quite a few things I’d like, but I narrowed it down to three “small” things:

- An accessory top with a high neckline and no sleeves - just to hide cleavage - maybe with some lace at the edge ? and several grey and pastel colors please.

- Some accessory prints for shirts, like those tukete has, maybe some aimed at kids and toddlers too ?

- Makeup for kids. Some people let their kids wear makeup in real life, but adult cc makeup don’t look right on kids, so if anyone is interested in trying… I’d like eye-shadow and lipstick, with some discreet options (but you can go all out too of course).

Like, G1G2's Revamped Plantsims, Triplis' Plantsim Interactions, and Simonch8's No Cooldown & Trait mods. #ssswish This is such a lovely idea! There are so many fun wishes! What I’d like to have (and I think would also be useful for other Simmers) is a wedding themed recolor of the “large pile of presents.” I usually put one of those piles in my wedding venue so that the bride and groom can “open presents” together. But the colors that are on the original are not what you usually see on presents at weddings. (I usually opt for the one that is mostly purple, since purple and lavender are my favorite colors.) What I’d like to have are recolors in white, white/gold, and white/silver. Maybe some white/pastels (especially lavender, pink and blue. The white/pastel recolors would also be nice for having a party that you call a “baby shower” especially if yellow and light green were also available. That kind of party isn’t in the game, but it should be!)

I don’t see the #SSSwish I submitted on your public list (I forgot to use the hashtag before) so I’m submitting it again. I would love to see a mod, or tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from pulling away from a hug after they asked for one in response to a Check Toddler. The toddler will hold up its arms with a ❤️ in the speech bubble then step back and refuse the hug, and the relationship takes a hit. I tried MCCC’s tuner to stop it but it didn’t work.

i would love some…chinese cc haha! With snowy escape there’s more build items that can be used, I’ve noticed there tends to be a lot of Japanese inspired cc even before that pack, but not a lot of things from other parts of Asia, especially ancient cultures or cultural items like instruments (decor), clothing, furniture (lohan beds), etc. I’ve gone looking but most of what I’ve found is locked behind chinese-only forums and is usually alpha…I just think it would be cool to see some mm stuff from other places esp as fandoms get more globalized

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I haven't been able to look around lately but I noticed that most rings/hand accessories aren't compatible with SkinDetail eyelashes. My wish is exactly hand accessories, specifically wedding rings, which don't conflict with SkinDetail eyelashes. It may be helpful to know that plumbobteasociety managed it in their RRS pack. I have another #SSSWish (if you don't mind). I don't know if it already exists but a mod which adds more family relationship options to CAS or the Sim menu. I would love to see some more truly alien clothing options for the aliens, the males especially. I sometimes like to dress mine up in complete different outfits for their alien and disguise forms. The Sims 4 Realm of Magic - Early Access CAS Review

Huge thank you to the EA Game Changer Program for providing me with the opportunity to play the Realm of Magic Game Pack early!

I have been quietly hoping for a long time that we would get some kind of Makin’ Magic style pack, so needless to say I was VERY happy when Realm of Magic was announced. I was even happier when the Gurus started “leaking” gameplay images, and completely ecstatic when the trailer came out! So you can imagine how psyched I was when we were given our early access codes and I could finally get in and look everything!

You all know by now how this works, right? If I like something, I generally can’t think of much else to say besides screaming at the top of my lungs “OMG I LOVE IT!”, and if I don’t like something I will straight up tell you guys and explain why... Yeh I’m looking at you Moschino reviews. So with this pack, there are a couple things I had issues with (not as many as Moschino lol) so if you don’t want to hear my nitpicky opinions about those things you can just skip straight to the "The Verdict” section at the bottom of each review.

As per usual, I’ll be posting both CAS and Build/Buy reviews, but instead of a gameplay review (because let’s face it, I never seem to be able to get around to that damn thing lol) this time around I’m going to be posting a short gameplay “story” instead, and will be voicing my opinions about certain things on the posts as it goes along. The gameplay won’t be all posted before the pack releases though, so...

I’m still a little uncertain how I feel about CAS as a whole. It has a lot of great stuff and it’s definitely worth having in my game, but it also has quite a few things I don’t like, things that (in my opinion) should have been included that weren’t, and the usual issues with some of the meshes/textures that continue to happen with every new pack.

✨The Hair

For some reason I was expecting more than five hairs? I don’t know why, but based on the trailers this pack seemed like it was going to have a lot more content than any other Game Pack, and it does to a certain degree... just not hairs; there are only five of them. Because let’s be honest, there might be six hairs in the catalogue, but they’re are only five new hairs... and one identical hair with coloured streaks.

Probably a completely unpopular opinion but I’m not a fan of this new trend of getting extra hairs with ombre and streaked textures, I’d rather leave that up to CC makers and have the Sims team work on more new meshes.

Which brings me to the only real issue I have with the hairs in this pack. The streaked version of the long braided hair is really weirdly textured in my opinion. The streaks start right at the hairline and haven’t been feathered/blended out into the rest of the hair very well so it kind of looks like when I accidentally add one of my accessory overlays to a hair it doesn’t belong on LOL

✨The Clothing

The clothing in this pack falls into two categories; Netflix Sabrina and Hand-me-down Winter Harry Potter. Normally that wouldn’t bother me, and in this case the clothing is really well made and looks great, but I do find myself a little disappointed by the lack of what I call “Comfy Casual” clothing.

This could be entirely just a me thing but much like me in real life, my sims rarely leave their homes, and I dunno how you live your life but I don’t walk around my home in fancy button-down shirts and dress pants and shoes. I wear leggings, a hoodie and slippers; and that’s provided I even bother to get out of my PJs that morning! I keep waiting for more comfy casual clothing to be added so my sims don’t have to get all dressed up just to sit around and play video games or finish off that novel they were writing.

But with the exception of a few things in this pack, everything is either ripped, leather, mesh, buckles, collars, or corsets. Which works really well with the whole magical theme of the pack, but spellcasters deserve to be comfy too! That’s not to say the clothes we got aren’t amazing though, they definitely are and I will definitely get a lot of use out of them!

But we all know I mostly talk about the issues I have in these reviews so let’s move on to them properly shall we?

Let’s go from left to right, starting with the drop-crotch pants. This one is quick and simple: can we all just agree that this is not a good look and move on please? It was bad enough in the 90s, we don’t need to be over here in 2019 looking like we’re wearing diapers, thanks.

Oh, key necklace... I was really looking forward to using you. Sadly, unless my sims have literally the smallest possible breasts hanging all the way down to their knees, you look like someone threw you in a fireplace to melt a while 😭

The yellow dress is another classic example of “Instagram vs Reality” meme that tends to happen with every pack. The dress looked really good in the trailers and promo images, but sadly looks butt in game.

The leather bodysuit is cool, huh? Yep, it’s definitely cool. The mesh looks good, the texture is really well done... oh what’s that? You want to wear leggings under it? Well you can’t, sorry. No leggings at all can be used with this bodysuit.

Up next we have the... ahem, Slave Bracelet. I promise you I tried to find a better name but this is the name it usually goes by and the only other one I could find, Harem Bracelet, wasn’t much better 😬 Not the point though! This bracelet/wrist cuff has some weird things happen when you pair it with an outfit that shouldn’t technically allow the bracelet to show up underneath it. As you can see in the example on the far left, with some long tees it doesn’t show the bracelet but still shows the specular for it, and in the image on the far right, with other long tops it kind of merges with mesh and flattens itself on top of them.

Next is one of my pet peeves with quite a few of the clothes in this pack; the addition of gloves, scarfs and other accessories to the outfit/top that should have either been made into their own separate meshes, or left out completely. That top in the image would have been really nice to wear during all seasons, but because of the gloves, it now only makes sense in the colder months.

Then we have the new makeup options, which I know isn’t clothing but shhh lol. It’s EA makeup... do I really need to say more? It probably wouldn’t look as bad if it weren’t so pixelated but whoever is in charge of creating makeup looks for this game needs to get in touch with @crypticsim ASAP ‘cause OOF!

And the last of the pics is something that has constantly bugged me about a lot of meshes in this game, all the way back to base game; why do they change the shape of my sims like that!? Like look at this comparison of my model sim with and without the outfit... WHY!? HOW!? WHY!?

Lastly... This is probably the biggest disappointment with this pack for me and I just don’t even know how to begin to describe how annoyed I am that ONCE AGAIN there is nothing for kids and toddlers. Zero. Zip. Nada. Not a damn thing. That’s two packs in a row with no new content for any sims under teen age and I just don’t get it. Moschino actually make kids and baby clothing! And with this pack, Gurus specifically mentioned that there was a special trait for sims who were born into spellcaster families...

SO WHY NO KIDS/TODDLER STUFF!? 😡

✨The Verdict

I know this all probably came off as sounding really negative, but as I said at the start, when I don’t like something I have a lot to say about it. But I do genuinely love the clothing, it fits the theme of the pack really well and most of it looks great. I just wish a little bit more attention had been paid to certain things, that there was more comfy casual stuff, and that kids and toddlers weren’t once again neglected.

all the default hairs i’ve made (ts2)

i posted a cluster of these a few months back, but i have more and i also want to keep them more. organized? so here we are. at some point i may delete the content of the original post and link to here, once i figure out what to do with the hairlines in that post.

this post totally isn’t just here because i’m uploading sims that heavily depend on some of these hairs if anyone wants them to look the same in their game as they do in mine. noooo.

general info.

all the regular binned hairs in this post use the colors isis, nesert, and serqet (by io), molotov (by pooklet), and mateus (by blackswan) as bases because those are my favorite naturals. most unnatural colors are by either me (cosmic) or pooklet (project mayhem), but some have been edited from actions to blend better and may be different to the action they were based on.

the texture i’m currently using is a blend that is unreleased because i don’t... quite remember all the credits for it. but i’m trying to figure those out.

some defaults may have improperly attributed original package creators. if you know the right one, feel free to tell me. some replacements may also have differing ages to the original maxis mesh, it depends on how it was edited by the default creator.

i’ve held onto the psds for all of these hairs and i want to add them to this post eventually. if you need one specifically, just ask, i’d be happy to give it to you if you think painting streak masks is as tedious as i do.

i don’t have plans currently to copy any of these to nondefault meshes, but you don’t need to ask for permission to do so or to release anything.

one last note, i do plan on adding an all-in-one at some point, but there isn’t one yet. i wish sfs had a bulk download option, but alas.

So as I said before, this started off as me converting that cute as heck toddler fro from seasons quite some time ago, but then to make the hairlines all perfect and all that I kinda did a frankenmesh thing and long story short it ended up being a lot more work than I had anticipated lol, BUT personally I’m really happy with the end result(s) and I hope you’ll enjoy these too! ^^

Bibi is the “regular size” with the flower

Bobby is the deflowerd one, and works for both m and f frames!*

Bebe is the extra pouffy one!

See 360 views under cut for all!

Comes with a flower accessory overlay (found in head accessories, same as all my other ones). Accessory overlay works for both regular and deflowered versions ^^ 35 swatches!

Each hair has all 18 EA swatches, all lods, proper tags, disabled for random, shadows, bumps and speculars - everything you need!

All of them are also hat compatible and BGC of course ^^

Everything I make is fully tested but please don’t hesitate to let me know if you run into issues, I want to know! the riley hair doesn’t have a clip so I am going to assume you mean the Peyton hair since it was released in the same month. It wouldn’t really be possible to do Peyton without the clip since it has a part of the hair going up into the clip. Without it there would be a hole and if the hole was filled in it would still look weird since the hair would be going up into nothing. I’m sorry <3

“Garrosh’s Little Shop of Horrors.” [6]

Quest Objective: Babyproof Pandaria (and tattle on a corrupted warchief).

“How did I not see this coming? Toddlers put everything in their mouths!”

“Eona–”

“No, I'm not ignoring this. I should’ve baby proofed the entire continent.”

“Eon.” Andy stared at me sternly from across the table.

“He swallowed the Heart of the Thunder King.” I gagged at the recent memory. My alliance with Wrathion had gone south (big surprise) and ended with him acting his age. I had found nothing to aid my plight against Garrosh, nor to ease Anduin’s painful condition. Simply put, things were not going as well as I’d hoped.

Why does my family always do things like this? Grandma swallowed an entire orc, my mom bit somebody’s face off–what big leap is my diet going to make in the future…? I hate keeping secrets from Anduin, but it might be in his best interest to keep these instances hidden.

“You’re the one that gave it to him! What did you think he would do with it?” Andy asked.

“I don't know...put it on his shelf or something? Anything but devour it like me with a bag of chocolate…” I thought back on what I said. “Which I definitely have not done.”

Andy’s lips spread in a small smile, but it didn't linger long. “Why give it to him? Light, why even join him on his schemes? Family or not, I wouldn't trust him.”

“Neither do I,” I said, scooting my chair closer to his. The Stormwind guards around the stairs tensed and had no clue I’d been even closer than this. “I thought I could find a solution with Garrosh...and something to help you.”

“Me?” Anduin was dumbfounded. His tone was a softer like velvet, “That's sweet, but you shouldn't have to worry. Velen and the mistweavers said I would recover.”

I shot him a doubtful glance, but didn't argue. Andy kept his eagerness to walk around and talk to others, but I still noticed a huge difference. I had known him long enough before to see the changes: the slightly arched brow that hid a vein of pain, the posture more strained. Small changes, but huge in their implication. I couldn't imagine what agony he was really in.

Andy’s fingers slid across the table and entwined with mine. It seemed like a loving, harmless gesture, but inside it had me reeling. Is he insane? The guards just at the foot of the stairs, the innkeeper running to and fro–a simple glance upstairs! Does the Prince of Stormwind really want to hold hands with an immigrant that glows in the dark?

I sat there and gazed at our knot of fingers and hands, set atop the wooden table for everyone to see. I'm not ashamed of him–how could I? He's smart, he's kind, he's charming–he’s perfect. But how is this relationship going to work for us, out of the night and into the light?

“How are you holding up with Garrosh?” Anduin asked, breaking my inquisitive silence.

“Not well.” I admitted. “He hasn't found me yet, but I know plenty of what he's hiding. He's not going to let me get away with that.”

“What did you see?”

I tilted my head to the side, my hair brushing my cheek. “I don't want to drag you deeper into this mess with me.”

“I already met Garrosh and I walked away fine,” Anduin replied, a grin growing on his face as I squinted at him for the comment.

“That's not funny, daredevil. I was worried about you–I still am,” I said as Andy gently squeezed my fingers. “Besides, it's not just what I saw. It's what I do now that I'm stumped on.”

“Depends on what you saw.” Andy replied. He gave me a sincere look, a familiar sign of reassurance that I had witnessed multiple times on our journey. Anduin had a sense of maturity in him that rivaled creatures centuries old–and a seemingly judgeless nature. I didn't want to introduce him to Garrosh’s Phantom lair beneath the stage, but my list of trustworthy allies had grown thin.

I sighed and looked over my shoulder at the near-empty inn. “Fine, I’ll talk. But we’re doing this my way–we can’t risk eavesdroppers on this.”

I retrieved my hand from Anduin’s grasp and dug into the pockets of my green coat. I pulled out a shard of pale pink quartz, dimly glowing in the dark aroma of the inn, and caressed the sides with my fingers.

“What is that?” Andy asked as he peered at the colored stone curiously.

“A crystal,” I explained as the grooves that I traced with my fingers glared a light yellow. “Using them is common on Outland. My father used to have a bunch...I used to record music with them to listen to.”

I set it on the table when I was done and it emitted a low hum.

“What's it doing now?” Anduin asked.

“If anyone hears us talking, I wish them good luck on translating ancient Darnassian.” I replied and looked away from the crystal. “I’ll start from the beginning.”

Andy nodded. I sucked in one last breath, feeling the oxygen fill my lungs. I knew that once it left, one of the most dangerous secrets I ever had to keep would escape with it.

I told him. I told him everything–from the machines designed for death to the peculiar cries in the dark caverns. I recalled the fires licking hot iron rods, eager to consume more. I told him every disgusting detail that haunted my nights until I was finally finished.

“Okay…” The shake of my voice had worn off and returned to its usual scratchiness. “What’s your take on that?”

Andy fingers were steepled together and eyes wide after my tale. I feared I had broken him until he asked, “...Is eavesdropping a habit of yours?”

“That's it? That's the first question that comes to mind?” I said, leaning an arm on the table as I blew my bangs out of my face. I was relieved that he wasn't too alarmed from my recount, but I wasn't expecting this.

“Well, recalling how we met, you were spying on General Nazgrim–”

“I wasn't snooping! I was hiding for my life and falling on my ass–two of my greatest specialties.” I remarked. Many memories of my life included running, hiding, and falling–not necessarily in that order.

“I respectfully disagree–I always considered your talents to be your effortless gracefulness and enthralling humor.” Anduin replied with a heart-stopping smile. It was one of the few times that he had succeeded in flirting with me without it become a quick–or stuttering–mess. Both left me blushing with my insides askew like I had done a row of flips.

I adore him to pieces. Inside I silently reassured myself on masking our conversation. I shook my head, trying to dismiss my crimson cheeks, “My nosy profession aside–what do you think I should do?”

“Hmm,” Anduin’s expression twisted as he contemplated his thoughts, “This is grave news, Eona. I must tell my father about this. Would you join me to speak with him and inform him about Orgrimmar’s state?”

My chest tightened. I actually favored his previous reaction over this one. I wrung my hands as I found the right words, “I...I agree that Varian should know. However, I would probably be killed on the spot, and I think the Horde should be told about this first.”

I sat up straighter in my chair, “If we tell the Alliance, there’s a chance that they’ll blame the entire Horde for this–and not every member is responsible for Garrosh’s...little shop of horrors. I can't do anything to stop Garrosh myself, that would be suicide. I need a loophole…”

We sat together in silence for a minute. Anduin’s hand returned to mine like water to a beach, brushing my knuckles with his thumb in wavelike movements.

“You know of Jaina? Of Theramore–? Well, what was Theramore,” Andy said in an apologetic tone. “I grew up with her, and she was acquainted with High Chieftain Baine. If any of the Horde leaders would listen to you, he would be one of them.”

My eyes narrowed, and my gaze traveled to the balcony. I stood before the railing and peered over the heads of customers, searching for one I knew. A deeper voice and glowing armor plates confirmed my thoughts.

Dezco.

I turned to look back at Andy. “Have you spoken with Sunwalker Dezco recently?”

Anduin shrugged. “A few days ago. He came to speak with me of the light.”

On Baine’s behalf my pink ass. I returned to our table and shut down the crystal. “If you don't mind, I may speak with him.”

“What are you going to say?” Andy asked.

“Hi.”

Dezco groaned, a loud sound like thunder given his size and his mane shook as he looked over at me. I sat cross legged on a barstool nearby with an innocent look on my face.

“I assume you’ve already spoken with Prince Anduin on Baine’s behalf.” I noted, throwing the lie back at him as the pandaren bartender listened in across the counter.

“What–? Oh, I have,” Sunwalker Dezco confirmed as his gaze returned to his drink. Given the Horde’s high regard of honor, I was shocked he even told the lie. Perhaps it was just a defense mechanism. “And I assume you have done the same.”

I shrugged nonchalantly. “He speaks very highly of you. Nice pauldrons.”

The Sunwalker stiffened as I noted his glowing shoulderpads. He recovered quickly, “I’ll admit, I’m surprised that you are wearing the same thing since I saw you last.”

I glanced down at my outfit, a mesh of greens and browns. I had worn it for most of my journey across Pandaria and it had kept me alive–wearing flashy clothing in my profession was suicide. All that mattered was that I was warm (which was almost always) and could move with ease.

“I value my life, not my wardrobe.” I said.

“Not very many share your opinion.” Dezco didn't clarify whom, but I knew what he meant.

Most of my people are haughty jerks–I can't blame him for loathing me on the spot. I like to think that I’m different; maybe not as rude but definitely irritating. I can't judge myself fairly, but neither can he.

The bar was quiet given Wrathion’s constant presence and the watchful gaze of the Stormwind guards. No matter how low I willed my voice to go, I knew Dezco could hear me. I turned my body towards him and leaned on the side of the bar, “Forgive me, but you don't seem like one to judge a book by it's cover–especially when you traveled here to speak with a human priest.”

There was a noticeable change in the tauren’s chestnut eyes. “The forgiveness is mine, it seems.”

The silent aroma of the inn invaded our conversation. I knew where our exchange of words had to end up, but to get there was a mental maze. Dezco certainly did not give me any time to decode it when he spoke again, “You sought out my company, is there something you need?”

The bartender had left his post behind the bar and ventured out to the tables to refill drinks. There was no need for secrecy.

“I would like to seek council with your High Chieftain.” I admitted.

“Last we spoke, you thought I was a spy of Garrosh’s, so I gather that won't be easy.”

“No, afraid not.”

I was starting to hear how naive and hopeful I sounded. My fingers wanted to tapdance across the counter but I kept them still.

If I can't get off this continent, I'm cornered here until Garrosh finds me. I could pass on my message to Anduin and he could inform the Alliance–but what violence would they unleash upon the rest of the Horde?

I was about to cut off our failed chat when a fist slammed the bar space between us. Dezco flinched and I looked up at Wrathion.

Ever since eating the Thunder King’s Heart, he had been receiving visions (and waves of nausea) and had retired to the shadows of the inn. Now he arose from his stealthy slumber and stared down the tauren with deadshot eyes.

As Wrathion withdrew his hand from the counter, I noticed gashes in the wood from his talons. The bartender would be furious, but I doubted he would ask Wrath to pay reparations.

“We have not met,” Dezco replied, baffled at Wrath’s theatrical nature.

“It does not matter,” Wrath’s tone was as elegant and refined as satin, but a subtle ferocity was sewn in. His white turban perched atop his head, slightly bouncing with every slight move like the fabric was nodding along with it's master’s intentions.

“You will fill any request this woman gives you with class and respect.” Wrathion’s last words were more of a hiss. “If she needs to leave this island, you will help her do so in any way necessary. Have I made myself clear?”

I felt sympathy for Dezco after just connecting with him. Even if the tauren’s sitting form still towered high above Wrathion, Dezco stared down at him like the most dangerous snake in the world.

The Sunwalker rose to his hooves and bowed his large head in my direction. “My apologies. I will speak with my escort and see what we may conjure to return to Thunder Bluff.”

Dezco stomped out of the inn like a bull provoked. Wrathion slid onto the barstool next to mine and summoned the barkeep back with a simple gesture. The poor pandaren hurried over and set two full cups on the counter.

“What was that all about?” I said, thanking the frazzled bartender with his fur standing on end as I took my drink. The liquid reeked of lime, and when I finally raised it to my lips I identified it as a mojito. I would’ve told him no alcohol since he was underage, but I held my tongue.

“You were kind enough to help me with my plans, even if that meant sneaking around your royal school boy upstairs.” Wrath remarked, and claimed the other mojito as he took a sip. I couldn't help the glare that formed when he did so, but I knew better than to complain.

“Besides, we did not find what you wanted the first time. Consider this a profitable loss,” Wrath added.

“Thank you.” I truly meant it when I said it. Ever since I had met Wrathion he was sort of...apathetic at times. It was nice to see him care about other living beings–for a short time, anyway.

“Only for my sister,” Wrath knocked his mug against mine as he stood. Before he moved to leave, he bent down close to my ear.

“But I take what I want. And I will steal your delicious blond boyfriend upstairs while you’re gone and...salten him a little.”

I gawked at him as he stood upright and cleared his throat. “Enjoy your trip. I suddenly have the urge to walk the path of enlightenment.”

The bartender gave me a pitiful look and a free refill as I heard Wrathion climb the stairs behind me. “Oh Anduin! I’d like to show you how I put the ‘stud’ in Bible study!”

This family has a sick way of saying ‘I love you.’

Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas and all of that all at once because these meshes took me so damn long. But I'm very happy with the outcome. I’m so excited to finally share these hairs with you i’ve wanted to for so long but they just needed a little more tweaking and i never had the motivation... but i finally got it randomly and here is the result! :D Thanks to everyone who tested :D I will convert to Child and maybe to adult when i get a bit more time :D

The Last Hunt

This story is a possibility. It is not a story of what will be, merely a story of what could be.

The old man dozed in his chair on the back porch of his house.

He wasn’t as young as he used to be, and the pleasant weather combined with the comfortable cacophony of children playing about in the water relaxed him to the point of drowsiness. Were he capable of more than just nodding off comfortably in his chair at the moment, he might grump about how even as little as five years ago he would have been eagerly joining in their play. But such was life, and such was the harsh mistresses that were Time and Age.

At eight-and-sixty, Arden Tide had surpassed his own life expectancy by a good three decades. Many of the people he’d called friend had preceded him into whatever came after, precious few still lived, and they rarely visited anymore- mostly due to their own infirmities in dealing with their dotage. It didn't bother him. They still communicated by pearl when the mood struck them. He knew everyone had their hands full these days.

“Tell us a story, Gran’papa Tide!”

The abruptness woke him with a start, and the old man cursed up a storm that had the dozen miqo’te children that had scampered up to the porch giggling in amusement. Arden couldn’t help but curl his lips into a wry smile.

“Come on now, children,” came a voice from behind him as the mesh-screen door opened and out came a miqo’te woman- lovely, statuesque, far taller than a normal miqo’te, standing at just a shade over six fulms in height, with jet black hair, piercing blue eyes and skin the color of chocolate. “You leave yoah Gran’papa to rest, don’t botha him none!” she said in an admonishing tone of voice.

Arden couldn’t help but chuckle indulgently as the cubs before him looked abashed. “It’s fine, Arha,” he said at length, shifting in his seat. “Nap time was almost over anyway,” he deadpanned. “What story do you li’l troublemakers wanna hear this time, eh?”

“The one about the creepy house!”

“Unka Dunrai’s battle in Bahdam’s Mettle!”

“The great morbol hunt!”

“Gran’mama Zareen’s last hunt!”

All became silent at this last one. That story was a favorite, and it showed as many young cubs’ heads all rapidly nodded in a rare show of solidarity. Gran’mama Zareen, the last of the Jaguar Tribe, and also Mother of the Jaguar Tribe. A legend. A myth that had lived and breathed, whose memory lived on in the Shroud, where the new Jaguar made their home.

She, the love of his life.

Everything that this iteration of the Jaguar was they owed to Y’zareen Serhan. all of the stories, all of the laws that the Jaguar followed had been set down by her, at first so that the Jaguar would not be forgotten… but then so that her cubs- their cubs, her and Arden’s- would have something to go by, a blueprint to follow.

Y’arha was the eldest of them, the mistress of the hunt, the teacher, the mother either in fact or in spirit to a whole generation. And it was her hand which came to rest on Arden’s left shoulder. Another warm sensation came to rest on his right- another hand, this one belonging to their youngest, Y’sarang, the one who most closely resembled her mother- the same build, the same height, the same color eyes, the same color hair, the same facial features and sometimes even the same expressions. She, too, was a huntress and a teacher. And a Sin-Eater, like their mother had been. But unlike their mother, she had not been shunned for her duty. The new Jaguar learned from the mistakes of the past, after all, and she was honored and revered for her sacrifice like Y’zareen should have been.

Y’ravin, their son and middle cub- who like his elder sister inherited his unusually large size, his hair and his eyes from his father- carried his own young cub on his shoulders, grinning as he approached the gathering. He’d never shown interest in becoming a leader, or challenging for the position of Nunh, but he supported his family in all things- in his case, along with Arden’s sister Ravija’s children, he kept the family business, the Aldenard Protection Agency, alive and well decades after its inception. “Hah, they’re all so quiet. Must be tellin’ that story again, eh, Pop?”

Arden smirked at his boy- no, he wasn’t a boy anymore but a man grown with a cub of his own. “Near as I can remember, a certain someone who’s gotten too big for his britches used t’sit just as quiet-like.”

“Hey, I still do! Just making an observation- sic ‘im, Y’zareen,” he said as he set the toddler down, and the little girl who was his great love’s namesake ran right towards her grandfather, all but crashing into him like only a young cub who had just learned how to run could.

Arden laughed and picked the cub into his arms and set her down on his lap. “Well now, someone’s happy to see me,” he grinned.

“Stowwy!” the girl said, patting the old man’s chest playfully.

“Oh, I see how it is, just like these little heathens over here, ya just want me for me words,” he play-grumped. The little girl giggled.

“Awright, awright, gather in close, I ain’t gonna yell it out for the lotta ya,” he said, smiling when all of the cubs sitting near his feet- his son included- scooched closer.

“Let’s see now...It was nigh on ten years ago,” he began, and slowly lost himself in the familiar cadence and rhythm and words of the story. He didn’t even have to think about it anymore, so well-practiced and well-memorized was this story. It was, without a doubt his favorite story to tell. The one that stung the most, yet filled him with the most pride. The story of his Jaguar, his mate, his fire, his shadow, his storm. His Zareen.

And it was a complete and total lie.

The story was as much a dramatic retelling of their final hunt together as it was an exaggeration of the things that Zareen- and now Arha- had tried to instill in the young ones. Discipline. Duty. Ferocity and implacability against your enemies. Letting your emotions run free but not letting them run away from you. Keeping a level head. Doing what you must. Making the hard choices and living with them, or dying by them

But he never told them what actually happened during that precious hour that Sarangerel’s bracelet gave her, the hour to decide exactly how she wanted to end her life after she finally succumbed to the Void within. And Twelve willing, he never would. That bittersweet pain was all his own and it always would be.

They knew from the beginning that they were on borrowed time, but neither of them expected to spend twenty-three glorious years together. More than enough, yet not nearly enough. She had been careful over the years, and the signs of her inner void taint took a long time to develop. Discipline. Self-control. The will to resist temptation. Considering how Zareen loved to live life to its fullest right to the end- dancing on that razor’s edge, playing with fire and shadow, becoming that storm that Arden loved so intensely, hunting her prey until the very last moment, spending all those years burning in her fire were as great a gift as the three cubs that they made together. Year after year the taint inside her changed her outwardly, but she was still the same. Her hair became closer to a mane. She grew downwardly curved horns. The tattoos on her body came alive, spreading and covering her arms. Her hands became larger, her claws stretched and became long, wicked razors that she could retract at a whim, and near the end of their time together, whenever she called upon her aether a nimbus crown of blue-black void energy floated above her head- as if they needed more confirmation of what she was slowly becoming.

But even though every second they spent together was as precious as the rarest of gems, that last day- that last hour- was the most precious of all.

They had known going into that day, when the veins in her body and the blood within them grew black, that it was almost time. And so they hunted one last time, together. They went to the ruins of the ancient city of Mhach, which were still infested by powerful voidsent. And it wasn’t long after they began their hunt that Sarangerel’s bracelet finally activated- the dull metal disc finally opened and revealed the arcane pattern of gems that blazed with power which it hid.

They both knew what that meant- Zareen’s mind would no longer be her own in an hour’s time. She would become that which she had hunted and destroyed for decades.

And so Arden wove a fanciful story.

A story of a frightful battle against a voidsent he didn’t actually know existed or not, against hordes of creatures that never actually happened. Of Zareen deciding that it was finally time to end her last hunt, bolting on ahead to the heart of the city and detonating her soulstone, like a star itself being born before his eye, burning as brightly and as furiously as her heart always had.

His children knew the story for a lie, but they allowed him this one thing- this one lie- because they saw how happy it made him to share this story with the cubs. They heard the fierce pride in his voice when he spoke of how they battled their way through the hordes of minor voidlings to reach their target, and they saw the painful longing in his eye when he spoke of his great love: Y’zareen Serhan, their mother.

They didn’t know the truth. They didn’t have to know it. No one but his old friends Khenbish and Dunrai knew the truth, because they were the ones he went to after Zareen’s hunt was over.

No one else needed to know what happened in that last, precious hour. No one needed to know about the tears and the screams, about the anguish and the terror. No one needed to know exactly how much a man and a woman could do with one another or say to one another when there is literally no time to waste. No one needed to hear about the gentle retellings of their favorite moments together, about the fierce, loving pride they felt at all they accomplished as partners and mates. No one needed to know how badly Arden wished to follow his mate to the Lady’s side, but for his need to stay. Ravin and Sarang were young yet, and needed their father’s guidance, and Arha was yet too young and unproven to lead the reborn Jaguar on her own.

But for them- for the three beautiful, strong, courageous, intelligent cubs created from Arden and Zareen’s love, fire, shadow and storm- the story would have ended before it was ever told.

And so Arden watched his beloved go, before the void claimed her forever, and watched as the voidsent swarmed her. And she fought them, roaring in defiance the entire time as they wounded her time and again, until that brilliant flash of light and power from her exploding soulstone claimed them all along with her.

Arden stayed rooted to the spot long after the marsh had reclaimed the crater that had been the center of the ancient ruin, and he hardly remembered returning to the custom mana-cutter he’d had built for traveling on their tandem hunts. He hardly remembered getting in and flying his way back to the Shroud, to Khenbish and Dunrai’s home, where they had so often welcomed his and Zareen’s cubs when they went out to hunt, where their own procession of adoptive children had come and gone. He hardly remembered collapsing to his knees in front of them when they greeted him. There were no words exchanged- no words needed to be exchanged, they knew immediately why he had come.

And his brothers held onto him, kept him together when the shattered pieces of his heart threatened to fall and disappear into the nothing where they had been hidden before Zareen had walked into his life. They kept him together for this, he thought to himself as he brought the story to its conclusion, smiling at the awed, joyful expression in each cubs’ face, at the way his son’s eyes glistened with emotion, at the fierce pride in the smiles of his daughters.

He wouldn’t have known any of this without Zareen. He wouldn’t have seen their cubs grow and thrive and have cubs of their own. He wouldn’t have known the bittersweetness of raising his own family, with and without his beloved.

He wasn’t as young as he used to be, and the sun’s rays had slowly begun to dip down and darkness filled the Shroud combined with the comfortable cacophony of children playing about in the water had relaxed him to the point of drowsiness.

Vah’an…

Were he capable of more than just nodding off comfortably in his chair at the moment, he might grump about how even as little as five years ago he would have been eagerly joining in their play.

It is being time to awaken, my vah’an…

But such was life, and such was the harsh mistresses that were Time and Age.

It is being time foah one last hunt, yes?

The gentleness of the call woke him with a start, and the old man cursed up a storm. Arden looked around and saw that the moon’s light was the only thing illuminating the clearing behind his home. Where were his cubs? Where were the grandcubs? He forced himself to calm down. Something had to be wrong- they wouldn’t just leave him there, asleep. Abruptly he shot to his feet when he saw something out of the corner of his eye.

A cat.

A large one.

A jaguar, sitting at the edge of the treeline, as slight blue-white corona of aether surrounding it. Arden gasped, rubbing his eye and blinking rapidly. When he looked again the jaguar was trotting away, into the forest.

Arden didn’t think- he simply gave chase, all thoughts of his children and grandchildren flying away like startled birds, because he knew this had to be a dream. The rapidity with which he ran out of breath and his muscles protested the sudden activity after such a long time without it quickly put paid to that belief.

Arden panicked as he lost sight of the jaguar, and he spun in place, gulping air as he tried to find it. Find her.

Because it had to be her.

“My vah’an…”

Arden turned abruptly at the sound of her voice.

“Zareen,” he said, breathless, eye wide in wonder as the very image of Y’zareen Serhan as she had been on the day they met stood before him, shrouded in that blue-white light.

“Ahden, my mate,” she replied, her smile as dazzling and her eyes as brilliant as he remembered them. “Long have I missed you,” she said, lifting her hands to his cheeks. They felt warm, with the familiar calluses and the very tiny pinpricks of her claws that he’d long ago committed to memory.

It felt like an eternity before Arden was able to speak. “I’ve missed you too. Every damn second of every damn day.” His voice was thick with emotion, his eye glistening with unshed tears as he touched one of her cheeks with an aged, well-spotted hand.

“I know,” he said, her smile turning sad, “I am being sorreh. But I am also being proud, my vah’an. Proud of what you and ouah cubs have built. It is being theah time, now. It is being time foah you to come home, aftah one last hunt togethah, like befoah,” she said, and leaned up to kiss him on the lips.

Instantly, the old man felt that rush he hadn’t felt since the day she died- that fire, that shadow, that storm.

And in that one moment, Arden Tide was no longer an old man.

He was as young, as happy and as full of vigor as the day they met, as the day she said she loved him for the first time, as the day she told him she was carrying their first cub.

“One last hunt,” she smiled. “One last hunt, and then we return home to The Rivah- to be letting it take us wheah it may, so we can find each othah again in the next life, yes?”

Arden’s response was simply in the kiss he gave her in return.

The tiger and the jaguar padded away together into the forest.

Y’arha, Y’ravin and Y’sarang wept tears of joy as they saw their parents reunited for the last time- the perfect end to their imperfect love story.
