she was out fishing with kinich and kachina. oh, and we can't forget ajaw. it wasn't a trio, silly you, it was a quartet.

you walked up to them, kinich being the first to notice you. mualani seemed very wrapped up in whatever bait she had caught, yelling to kachina to grab the bucket to put the fish she caught in. you greeted kinich, asking him how his day was before mualani finally noticed your presence.

"y/n!" she shouted before leaping into your arms, wrapping her legs around your waist and hugging you tight. she didn't seem like she intended on letting go, so you staying standing there for a little while before she jumped off and motioned for you to sit in the sand, watching kachina fish and ajaw get pissed off about "not receiving a turn" or whatever.

mualani got comfortable, laying her head on your thighs as you leaned against a bigger rock on the sand. she held your hand in hers, talking about all the fish she caught and what dinner was going to be tonight. you nodded along, congratulating her on her first time fishing (hard to believe, but she was persistent on making you believe it).

she eventually stopped talking, simply watching kachina reel in bait of her own (with the help of kinich, because kachina got a little nervous with the fish flinging around on the line). mualani laughed and buried her head deeper into your lap, your legs covering her ears. she took both of your hands and kissed them before holding them close to her face.

you decided to stay like that for the time being, watching her doze off. her nap started with a simple "i love you" mumbled between breaths. you smiled, whispering an i love you back before closing your eyes against the rocks.

after a long, long semester and a series of terrible finals, you thought that this road trip you had planned with your friends would be just the thing you needed to unwind.

that is, until the tire on mualani's car popped and you were all forced into chasca's to find the nearest shop. and usually that wouldn't be a problem, until you were forced to reckon with the fact that there was too many people, and not enough seats.

mualani frowns, leaning back over her seat to survey the rest of the car.

kinich clears his throat from the backseat.

the reaction is immediate—mualani sends you a suggestive look, and chasca giggles from the driver's seat, only to be met with your scowl. sensing the unrest, kinich rolls his eyes.

"relax. it's just because we don't have enough space, and i think xilonen might lose it soon if she doesn't get to eat something."

he's right about that—the blonde is terrifying when she gets hangry, and it's something that you should certainly avoid. so that's how you end up crawling into the backseat, hesitating as you stand before him.

"it's okay, you can sit."

you do so cautiously, edging your weight onto him slowly instead of all at once. when he notices, kinich clicks his tongue and pulls you onto him fully.

kinich gazes out the window with a sigh.

My Conspiracy Theory about Natlan's Pale Characters

I started playing Genshin Impact around the 3.7 update, right after the Interdarshan Championship. While I wasn't around during the initial spark of outrage against Sumeru due to the characters' overall lack of melanin, I eventually learned a lot about Sumeru's cultural inspirations through the SWANA and South Asian creators in the fandom. I think it's beautiful how we learn about each other's cultures through Genshin, and I believe the designers at Hoyoverse do lots of research to facilitate these conversations. This is why I think it's a shame that Natlan, which features rich Indigenous cultures in the Americas, Africa, and Pacific Islands, features primarily pale characters AGAIN.

While it's possible that through the art, story, and fashion of Natlan we will once again learn about the diverse cultures of Indigenous Americas, West Africa, and the Pacific Islands, I don't think it's enough. Considering a lot of these cultures take pride in their skin color and bodies through tattoos, body paint, and other markings/piercings, Hoyoverse is doing a disservice to today's Latin American, African, and Pacific islander fan base by making the majority of Natlan characters pale. To insensitively cherry-pick what traits of each culture to represent and what to discard is the definition of cultural appropriation and racism, which is such a shame because of how many discussions about culture that Genshin has started since 2020. As a Chinese American player, I'm especially disappointed that the company who educated so many people about my culture is failing my brown and Black friends to such a spectacular degree.

Many people have come up with excuses such as it's just skin, it's just a game, Hoyoverse is a Chinese company so what do you expect, Latin America also has white people, etc. I won't bother debunking these myths because there are plenty of people doing this labor already, but what I do want to bring people's attention to is the fact that many Natlan characters were most likely designed with darker skin in mind. Through fanmade recolorings (here's an example), I noticed that Mualani and Kachina's tan lines and skin details look more pronounced with darker skin, while Xilonen looks more mature and Kinich looks more brooding. Having studied studio art during undergrad, I cannot unsee these intentional artistic decisions and cannot shake the possibility that the researchers and character designers of Hoyoverse were forced by higherups to whitewash everyone at the very last minute. If this is true, I hope Hoyoverse will find some way to reverse their decision or turn a new leaf in the future. Considering many other Chinese games like Reverse: 1999 and Dislyte already have diverse representation and melanated characters, Hoyoverse should find no problem following their lead.

As of right now (i.e. 4.8 update), Genshin players from all over the world are expressing their dissatisfaction with Hoyoverse through boycotts, review bombing, and posting on social media. The Chinese fanbase - Hoyoverse's primary audience - is especially vocal and organized about their efforts, which means if Hoyoverse doesn't notice now, they will notice soon. Despite how much we like using Genshin as an escape from real life, it's important to recognize how insidious the consequences of erasing melanated characters can be. Anti-Blackness and colorism harm people on the daily, which is why we must speak up when a company as big and influential as Hoyoverse is doing the harming.

Pain Relieving Hugs

Summary: Reader is AFAB but using they/them pronouns (most of fic is in 2nd person) and has really bad periods. Reader has been seeing Xilonen but it's not official yet. This fic is a bit personal to my sufferings with my period over the last few months.

Warnings: talks of periods, it gets detailed when describing how the cramps hurt, painkillers not working, symptoms associated with periods, atypical symptoms according to google but i deal with them every month so ???, swearing, R is insecure about having rough periods. Originally the pronouns were going to be she/they in the fic but wasn't sure how well that translates, so... I wrote this for me😅

Originally you thought you had over-done it when helping Kinich with some deliveries. Maybe Ajaw had been right about you dragging him down, affecting his efficiency. At least over-doing it would explain why you felt so worn out when you tried to get out of bed the next day.

Maybe you had eaten something that didn't agree with you. Maybe that was the reason why you could feel cramps in your abdomen, front, back, sides... like you were being stabbed from all angles with sharp weapons that Xilonen had crafted. She could make anything anyone wanted as long as they filled out the form well enough for her to understand.

It wasn't food you ate, or just regular over-doing it working. It was your period's warning signs. Signs that you began to recognise before it was too late. Unfortunately, nobody else had recognised them. Not even the woman you were seeing, whose workshop you would often visit if she wasn't sunbathing up a tree or napping somewhere.

The stabbing pains weren't extinguished by any of your attempts for painkillers. You were trying to be careful, but the first few days were always hell, and your only other option was what Chuychu had suggested as a remedy. It was better than nothing, but you forgot to pick up the remedy she suggested.

"Well, fuck me I guess..." you grumbled, leaning your arms on the table to try and block out the aches. The world was getting fuzzy, but you needed to try eat something. You were usually at Xilonen's workshop by now, but walking hurt horridly, barely being able to focus on your surroundings.

The food you managed to find was tasteless, your stomach too busy cramping to want to digest any of it, and your tiredness made it even more bland. The shower you had taken before it all got worse was the only refuge, not getting too lightheaded this time at least.

Sobs tried to claw their way up your throat, but you choked them down with the closest glass of water in reach. The chalky taste almost choking you.

Enough was enough. Wobbling like a baby deer, you forced yourself to walk back to your room, curling up under the blankets, regardless of the thin layer of sweat coating your skin, or how cold your hands felt against you as you held yourself to try self-soothe.

Meanwhile, Xilonen was stuck in her workshop. Her attempt to wrap up everyone's commissions for the day had been usurped by the Pyro Archon. Her Archon had broken her sunglasses again and wanted a new pair as soon as possible.

Mavuika had gone from shouting outside of her workshop for her, to trying to discuss intricate details that were unnecessary for anything but the paperwork Xilonen required regular customers to fill out. Things for the Archon were a little different however... Mavuika loved to talk through her ideas, how the shape could be altered a bit, the frame bridge of the sunglasses could be adjusted a little... fine, fine, fine. On the condition that the archon didn't ruin them two days later. Or the bike that was constantly being revised and took her three months to build...

"Where's your personal peacemaker anyway?" Mavuika enquired playfully, a smirk on her lips as she glanced around the workshop, wondering if Xilonen had hidden you somewhere.

"Uh, what? My personal what-now? Oh, because they stopped us arguing last time?" Xilonen frowned, recalling you had said she would see you tomorrow, yesterday, which was today, "honestly, I have no idea. They're usually here by now."

"Are they now?" Mavuika raised an eyebrow, smirking until Xilonen huffed.

"Do you want your sunglasses fixing or not, Mavuika? Because teasing me about my- the person I'm seeing isn't helping."

"You two aren't official yet?" Mavuika's curiosity spoke for itself, even as Xilonen distracted herself by looking at blueprints, the furnace, anything but to tell her archon about her relationship. "What happened?"

"They just thought that they overdid it yesterday when they were helping Kinich. Ajaw can be too much with them too. They'd usually be here by now..." Xilonen confessed, not usually one to want her stress to eat away at her. Maybe it was different with her when it came to you.

"How much work do you have left today?"

"Besides your sunglasses, nothing that can't be done tomorrow." Taking one glance at her comissioned work, she sighed, giving Mavuika a pointed look.

"Fine... go check on your lover. Ask them out and I'll forgive you for delaying my sunglasses until tomorrow."

"You're lucky you're the Archon." Xilonen gave rolled her eyes at Mavuika's teasing teasing, heading out of her workshop and making a beeline for where you lived.

The curtains of your house were still shut, and the delivery of fruit and vegetables that she could only assume was from Ifa was untouched on your doorstep.

Her knuckles against the door produced no sign of life, and kicking your door in wasn't exactly the greatest plan... but she could make you a new door, if she needed to.

Scouring her surroundings, Xilonen spotted the plants on your porch, unlike her own, they were budding with life. Nudging each pot carefully, she eventually found the key to your front door.

An empty glass and a plate covered in crumbs laid in the kitchen, abandoned. From what she could tell, the chair had fallen back from someone standing up, but there was no sign of you so far.

She knew where you slept, she had been there a few times, but you two had only made out a few times there. Never any further, especially when there was a lack of official titles for the relationship so far.

The door stood ajar, the curtains closed, and a blanket was half on the floor. Xilonen couldn't help the sigh that escaped her lips, spotting you curled up under another blanket, fast asleep.

Her footsteps quiet on the floor, Xilonen gently stroked your face, smiling as you began to stir with a whine.

"Mm... Xilonen?" your eyes barely opened, looking up at her tiredly as a tired smile crossed your face.

"How are you feeling?" the geo vision holder enquired, her hand resting on your forehead, noticing how warm you felt, "are you sick? Your forehead feels warm."

"No. I, ugh, I feel like a blood bath... and like my insides are being churned up in a bread mixer." You immediately grimaced, trying to hide under the blanket but any and all movements felt like you were being stabbed in the abdomen. "Sorry, that's so... too much information. You can go, I'll be fine."

"Is it usually this bad?" Xilonen shook her head, sitting on the edge of the bed to coax you out of the blanket.

"Usual painkiller remedies stopped working. Forgot to pick up a new one to try out... I'm sorry, this is all really gross. I didn't want you to see me like this." You fought back tears of frustration, trying to fight back the thoughts in your head, telling you that you had ruined everything. You really liked Xilonen, but being reduced to this once a month? You didn't blame her if she wanted to leave and not come back.

"Hey, it's okay. You're not gross, you just have really bad periods, onesleave you in bed all day." Xilonen replied, stroking your face as you looked at her with watery eyes.

"You came here during your work hours?"

"Well, you got me out of listening to Mavuika's sunglasses specifications again. Plus, I was worried about you. She noticed, and said her sunglasses could wait, so I made my way here." Xilonen explained, shuffling down to lay on the bed with you after removing her vision necklace so you'd both be more comfortable.

CHASCA AND KINICH: THE CLOSEST THINGS WE'LL GET TO LAW ENFORCEMENT IN NATLAN!!

okay i love these two i think their personalities are pretty similar only chasca is more trigger-happy and kinich more seemingly apathetic. if they had to play good cop bad cop they'd both be bad cops idk it is what it is

out of the six heroes, these two would be the most physical/carry out the dirty work. stay with me now.

1. theyre the most morally ambiguous imo. and its not in the way that they will harm innocents in a war, for example (they could, but id say theyd try avoid that outcome as much as possible), but that they can hurt the enemy in ways the other four cannot. ororon has (imo) clean-cut morals and lines he refuses to cross. i think he, iansan and mualani are simply too (and I don't mean this in a bad way) soft and kind-hearted to harm someone beyond necessary. they have the physical strength to, but they wont. 🤷 xilonen is a bit more confusing, but I do believe she normally wouldn't just because she wouldn't consider it necessary. chasca and kinich might, but xilonen wouldnt. i read her character stories and she does not seem like the type to believe in physical lessons the way chasca or kinich would. yo what i cant believe i just wrote that. im keeping it because thats deep but damn i didnt mean for it to be while the other four wouldnt, chasca and kinich may. theyre a little harsher on the world as we've seen from their characters, and i think between kinich's skewed perspective of "price" (not in the form of money) and chasca's abyss-tainted bloodlust, they could definitely go overboard in the eyes of worldly moral. not their morals, but our morals.

of course im open to discussion on this !! i wrote this in like five minutes even though this is breaking into character analysis territory oops

2. starting to realise i could just make a separate post on this but ehhh you know that tt audio "the dragon has three heads"? go search it up and listen to it if you dont because im about to yap on why chasca and kinich are mavuika(the dragon in this scenario)'s murderers - iansan and mualani would be the monarchs. both are loved by natlan, boost morale and have heavy influence on their respective tribes - xilonen and ororon are the "mad". no explanation i think they fit perfectly - so that leaves chasca and kinich as the murderers. obviously if we divide the six into three groups, these two would HAVE to go in the section of the ruthless. because. you know. theyre the most ruthless of the six. dw this isnt deep i just yapped for fun hahahha i love being self indulgent

wrio and kinich both came from rather disturbing childhoods. i think they'd bond great over that, not even including their overall personalities which seemed to really click over the course of the event lol i love them theyd have a long distance father-son relationship. wrio please be the one. dont give kinich another set of parental issues (nah ik wrio wouldnt do that. he knows what it's like. WHICH IS WHY HE'D MAKE SUCH A GOOD ONE!!) theyre also both just underground law enforcement (less official in kinichs case but still. he followed a whole ass shady gang because he got a gut feeling they were up to something. didnt have to. but did because he feels like natlan is his responsibility) and i think thats really cool

also neuvi's justice alarms would blare violently at the sight of kinich idk. ALSO he'd have another immortal friend to bond with. not kinich. but ajaw.

itd be so interesting to explore a couple hundred years into the future where neuvillette sees kinich again and thinks "what the hell" and realises it's his corpse being possessed and that the little pixelated thing that followed him around was way more than it looked

God I need a good hydro DPS. But at the same time I'm saving for Iansan and Capitano. The struggle. But more importantly they have Neuvillette's 2nd rerun, but we have yet to see Wrio's 1st. I actually do wonder if Aloy cursed the cryo element when she came out. Shenhe, Wrio, and less now Eula but my point still stands that cryo characters have it tough when it comes to banners.

I think its because of cryo's strange spot in the meta

If we get a cryo Hutao or Arlecchino (massive NA and burst dmg). Reverse melt has the same multiplier as vaporize which can be AS powerful as Hutao or Arle. Which means the burst can be as powerful too. Have you noticed no cryo dps has a single hit nuke burst? (EULA IS PHYS BURST, NOT CRYO, AND YOU SEE HOW HARD PHYS FELL OFF)

If we get a cryo xiangling or xingqiu (off field cryo applicator). Melt multiplier (pyro->cryo) is actually 2x while vaporize is only 1.5x. So yeah it would be extremely busted.

Cryo as an element have either broken or shit reactions. No inbetween. Melt would be busted if theres actual units to support it. Frozen is busted so they made bosses immune to it. Cryo literally doesnt react with dendro while the two other most powerful element (pyro and hydro) does. And who literally uses super conduct outside of phys mains.

Geo fell off for abit until they started upscaling them HARD. (Navia exists, Chiori is straight up Albedo but better, Xilonen is literally geo kazuha). Cryo doesnt get that specific upscaling because they know as soon as cryo gets proper dps or sub dps units, theyd be busted.

But now Cryo is a mid element and all units suffer for it by staying in hyv's basement

xilonen is aztec, so i tried implementing some notable details (ex. the collar, loincloth, and necklaces).

i also wanted to give her more hair because she does Not have a lot!

she has vitiligo to mimic the animal print, and also paws

color palette: primarily gold, plus some reds and greens (based on depictions of chicomecōātl / xīlōnen, who xilonen is named after)

mavuika. ok first off i put her hair up. i feel like it'd be annoying to do half the shit she does with loose hair. also i think it looks like a flame. it's held up by a sun-shaped hairclip

iirc, māori chieftainesses usually wear feathery dresses. so i combined it with her old outfit, while keeping the tooth-like pattern from her jumpsuit. that's a fun tie to dragons, and the feathers make me think of sunbeams. the dress is shorter so she can ride her saurian (i don't like the bike) easier.

i also gave her a moko kauae, because, again, she is māori

color palette: red. lots of red. but also green; pounamu is a stone that is important to māori culture, and is has a green hue

citlali is mostly the same, except i gave her a dress. oh and there's a snowflake on the side. i like dresses :3

she has some animal skulls and more feathers on her outfit, plus the same aztec collar as xilonen

elf ears because i feel like they fit her. i don't get why chasca has them but not her?

oh and a cane. old woman deserves a cane.

her color palette is the same, i think it's pretty :3
