i sent you an ask a few days ago about responsible science but i guess i have to send another, because these stories are hitting me hard right now and i find them far more compelling than canon (maybe because bruce banner is Like That in approximately one movie, for ~30 minutes of screen time?) you've basically
here's a question: if you could ignore the all the terrible complications of putting fic into movie form, would you adapt one of your fics into a movie? which one(s)? i guess the character driven style isn't as typical for a movie as it is for writing, and it's a lot harder to explore characters' thoughts and memories in a visual format, but despite all that your stories strike me as being very very movie worthy, not just the long epic ones but the shorter ones exploring character dynamics
I am also obsessed with That Bruce Banner, and you are right that he appears for only about 30 minutes in all of MCU. The other Bruce Banner is Doofus Banner, who is cute and funny but not my guy. It makes me so sad.
This question is interesting. I write fic with the intention of writing a textual story; I think if it interested me as a movie, I might not write it. That is, I think most of the richness of my stories is in the narration, not in the plot or visuals or even dialogue. I do think the dialogue would be fun to hear actors say, but a lot of it works because of the POV of the story.
I mean, I'd be really happy to watch the actors who play WWX and LWJ in CQL make out, but I don't think the fics I've written in that fandom would make very interesting movies. I feel that way about a lot of things I've written--I'd also like TOS Kirk and Spock to kiss, but uh, one of the actors is dead, I'm not sure I love the idea of CGI, and honestly maybe the stories just work better as text.
I do think parts of Responsible Science lend themselves to movies. I think part of the reason was that I was writing these not as simple romances but as direct post-canon for an action movie. I was very tired of the "everyone lives at Avengers Tower now and has sleepovers" kind of fics, and really wanted to write a way of these people working together that I thought could actually happen. I think A Fine Spur; Keep Your Splendid, Silent Sun; and Let's Stop The Timewarp again are very suited to cinema. They are plot-driven and action-heavy, with some scenes that would be highly cinematic, imo.
I would worry about the actors feeling like their characters in The Kids Weren't Alright, because they'd have to cast young versions of actors we already know. And I wouldn't want The Hollow Men to be made into a movie; I think within the fanfic space, writing a fic that says, "hey, let's use white super hero characters to reflect on imperialism and racism" is a way of asking the reader to consider the media they consume in a slightly different angle; it's subversion and transformation. But if you're making that into a big budget movie, you've got a different audience and are also pouring money into white perspectives on black bodies, and honestly there's enough of that already.
I also struggle about the idea of one of my Harry/Draco fics being made into a film--would JKR profit? And even if she didn't, idk, I feel like I'd probably disagree about casting. That said, I actually feel that The Boy Who Only Lived Twice is plotty and actiony and quite cinematic, and in a vaccuum, I think it would be a fun plot to watch.

this might be cliche... but who are your favorite authors/artists?? influences in general? aside from donna tartt?? your writing and the network of little references sprinkled in them literally make me want to tear out my wallpaper and eat it it's so good wtf do you put in it dear author?????
gosh so many things. if it's not glaringly obvious I am a huge media person so books/film/tv are all things I love and consume voraciously. I've always been a big big reader. I've made a list of some of my favorite book recs here as well as some of my favorite films here
I'm also a big lover of the ballet and the city I live in has a large company which I go to watch every chance I get, the last one I saw was swan lake and it was wonderful :) I've found it's a great source of inspiration when it comes to choreography on the page. when writing large amounts of physical scenes ie. sex or action or what have you physical descriptors and body placements become tedious and repetitive and I like looking to dance as a source for differentiation in my own written choreography. If you're a writer I'd definitely recommend for physical aspects!
I also obviously really love art and although I wouldn't say I'm very well studied or deeply knowledgeable on the subject I know what I like and have a clear grasp on my tastes. I'm endlessly scrolling Pinterest for visuals that inspire me, and I'm also a big museum person and as I travel a fair amount, whenever I'm traveling I go to lots of museums.
not to sound cliche as well but music is also obviously and of course a big influence in my work. when I was writing greener memories of better men I'd initially gotten the idea from this random Facebook post I'd seen but the true tone of the story came from the song The Weight by The Band. After writing several different versions of Joel's so in depth I've found now I'm worried about becoming repetitive in my characterization of him which is tricky because it's extremely extremely important to me that my iterations of him be true to his canon personality. I'm not a big fan of an OOC Joel and it's important to me to always stay true to who I think he really is in his original story personality wise, u know? but at the same time it becomes difficult navigating the inevitability of monotony when writing the same character over and over again. so I suppose what I try to do each time is provide a different view of the same man. for some reason that song brought that version of him I was trying to write very into focus for me at that moment. I don't know if that makes a lot of sense lol but sometimes inspiration or direction arises from strange places.
I feel like I've talked too much about Nabokov this year but I've been very slowly studying his work this year and I feel he's been a huge influence on my tone and cadence as I've progressed. I feel like he switches between having a very complicated way of saying very simple things and then saying very complicated things in very simple ways. he's also a master at sentence structure - again when trying to avoid monotony - I like studying the way he crafts these truly complicated sentences into a single monolith without ever actually breaking any rules of grammar or if he does it's in a way that doesn't seem wrong, if u know what I mean. he also comes up with he strangest metaphors for the smallest things. the last thing I read he describes a man's face as a "wet galosh" to tell us he was morose or sad or what have you and it's just soooo funny and interesting to me. I need my own mind to work in strange and creative ways like that, I'm trying to train it into doing so
if you're eating your wallpaper please make sure it isn't yellow, we don't want you getting trapped!

finally watched arsenic and old lace last night. loved it! thoughts:
very very funny. i was a bit worried that a comedy from 1944 (based on a play from 1941) wouldn't hold up but it holds up extremely well. the physical comedy stuff alone is pretty timeless - this is the first thing i think i've actually seen cary grant in and he's great at the reaction shots and slapsticky falling over things. all the dark comedy beats are pitch perfect too
the whole cast is great playing roles that sometimes feel like they came from disparate movies. the only ones reprising their roles from the original broadway production are the aunts and the brother who thinks he's teddy roosevelt; i did briefly think that jonathan was played by actual boris karloff but that was just the stage version. don't know if the original stage production left the comparison solely up to casting or if he still had the frankenstein scars there but they did a good job making this guy look enough like him
i think the balance of horror and comedy is very well done and i fully agree with this post that i reblogged before i actually saw the film. jonathan is a genuinely threatening presence as soon as he shows up, contrasting the played-for-laughs villains of the poisoning aunts with a "realistic" escaped serial killer who plays his scenes dead serious and who the other characters seem legit scared of. but the absurdity of so much of what's happening keeps it from getting too dark
mortimer being horrified by his aunts' actions but still wanting to protect them from the law and keep their crimes from being discovered is very nice actually. he's a good lad
that said: elaine deserved so much better holy shit, she's having a totally reasonable reaction at the end and her husband isn't letting her say a thing or explaining anything at all. i hope they worked that out after the end. it seems like they will. she's also not really in the movie that much which is funny because priscilla lane is usually second billed in the cast
(it's very funny to see marketing and posters for this movie that make it look like a straightforward romance/romcom. my library's dvd cover is just grant and lane lovingly gazing at each other with entwined hands and there's no indication at all that it's even a comedy, or a dark comedy aside from the title. need to get a picture of this because it does not reflect the movie at ALL)
did not know frank capra directed this! his next movie after this would be it's a wonderful life which i was also planning to finally watch this year, so it is seasonally appropriate even though it takes place at halloween
i was half-seriously writing up an analysis about how mortimer says insanity has been running/galloping in his family as far back as they can trace it, and that his earliest ancestor who arrived on the mayflower was killing native americans, and how this was probably not intended but something something colonialism as the original sin of the united states of america and it's been rotten from the beginning, some people just show it more blatantly than others. turns out there has been analysis on that very theme in the play, specifically on the us' "difficulty in coming to grips with both the positive and negative consequences of the liberty it professes to uphold" and "struggle to reconcile the violence of much of its past with the pervasive myths about its role as a beacon of freedom." wikipedia links matthew c. gunter's analysis of capra's films on the subject
also the movie opening with an unrelated scene of violence breaking out at a baseball game feels...well, it's saying something
overall really enjoyable movie, great halloween watch, feels a lot more modern than you'd expect. people say it's a wonderful life holds up similarly well (much different tone of course) and i'll be there for it too

2023
I watched Death Line (AKA Raw Meat) (1972)
I've never seen this. It's a movie I should have seen by now. I've known about since I was a teenager, but just never had too much of an interest for whatever reason. It gets hyped up a lot and I suppose I was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype.
A feral man is kidnapping and eating people in London's subway system.
(FYI: There are two versions out there. The British uncut version which is under the title Death Line and the Censored American version called Raw Meat. I watched the Uncut)
The best Subway film of all time is, of course, The original Taking of Pelham 123. It's awesome, go watch it.
But, no matter what the movie is, I really enjoy a movie that has to do with subway tunnels. I suppose they scare me a bit. And the idea of a whole other world going on down there is pretty awesome to me. It's just a great setting for a film, whether it's being used for a heist or for more monstrous purposes.
First and foremost, Donald Pleasance is crushing it in this movie from moment one. The man who is best known as Dr. Loomis in the original Halloween franchise, had such a long and amazing career and deserves to be remembered fondly.
Christopher Lee is also in this movie and, if you like movies, you understand that he's a legend. He's not in it a lot though, so don't get your hopes up for him.
With these two great actors and a solid British supporting cast, it's David Ladd, the American Actor, who stands out as being awful. He's bringing C-movie acting skills to a movie where the rest of the cast is bringing their A-game.
The Movie is a horror film, but it's solidly funny. Pleasance brings a really great character that is short, unsocial and rude, but hilarious. The horror stuff doesn't suffer for the humor though. There's some pretty grisly stuff in here. Great corpse work from the effects department.
Its a B-movie plot that's elevated exponentially by it's performances, (Donald Pleasance is fucking great and I can't overstate that), it's fantastic sense of humor and a villain who is both creepy, gross and sympathetic.
I'm sorry I didn't watch this sooner. It's a fantastic horror movie that's just lots of fun to watch. Is it perfect? No, but it doesn't exactly need to be, because it overcomes its flaws in it's overall enjoyability. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend it for sure.

eowyn/faramir, arwen/aragorn, lexlana, blue/gansey
the RANGE of these, I love it
EOWYN AND FARAMIR
he took her in his arms and KISSED her under the SUNLIT SKY!! and he cared not that they stood high on the walls IN THE SIGHT OF MANY!!!
wholesome (affectionate)
"Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine: "they will see us waving from such great heights / come down now, they'll say / but everything looks perfect from far away / come down now, but we'll stay"
this might only make sense to me but Marianne and Colonel Brandon? they both have a little bit of "Pair the Spares" about them, but in the brilliant way that the person who's really right for you shows up at just the right moment and can understand everything that you've been through, and it's a surprise but it's not at all a letdown
.....another arranged marriage AU
they weren't on the list, but that was an oversight! so I'm adding them to the Honorable Mentions
ARWEN AND ARAGORN
their backstory is my faaaaave. he grew up in her HOUSE, and then he came back all grown up??
referring only to what was written about them in the Lord of the Rings itself (and for that matter, only what I remember from my last reread)....they're gonna be my first "boring" couple 🙈🙈🙈 if this gets me tolkien-fan-cancelled it's only what I deserve (I'm also biased against them because I hate Liv Tyler in the films with the force of a thousand suns and some of that hate probably bled over)
"Mary's Song (Oh My My My)" by Taylor Swift, "they never believed we'd really fall in love"
trying to think of a couple where somebody gives up immortality for the other person and all I'm coming up with is Percy and Annabeth?? it'll have to do
the kings of Gondor never fell and Aragorn is a princeling raised in the white city and Arwen is part of a visiting diplomatic party from Rivendell
LEX AND LANA
this is. so hard. it's impossible to have one single defining moment when the relationship goes through a few radical metamorphoses!! BUT if I had to pick one I think I'm going with the second version of their scene in The Reckoning where Lex says "Clark may never actually trust you", and Lana says "I don't understand. Why would you lie to someone you love?" and Lex looks tortured and says meaningfully "I wouldn't." and then drunkenly kisses her. good times.
at their best they are fucked up (affectionate), but usually they are at least a little fucked up (derogatory)
I'm gonna go with "Graveyard" the stripped version, by Halsey, "I keep digging myself down deeper, I won't stop until I get where you are". and I'd have to be crazy not to mention the lyric "it's funny how the warning signs can feel like they're butterflies"
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Jude and Cardan. watching smallville makes me want to reread folk of the air all the time.
Lex is the terrible new bureaucrat hired to interfere with the running of the university Lana teaches at. she's pretty sure she's going to get laid off and replaced by an adjunct no matter what so she makes it her mission to tell him when he's being stupid. "So Chloe says you're not going to get fired anymore!" Clark says. "Chloe's an idiot," Lana says. "I'm not going to get fired because I'm young and underqualified and the bottom of the seniority chain, but I am going to get fired because one of these days that man is going to make a move on me and I'm going to punch him in the dick." Lex, walking by, says, "Who are you punching in the dick?" "Don't worry about it. Nobody essential to the running of the university," Lana answers. "What did I do?!?" Lex says.
they did not make the list, because I'm still in the middle of the show and I can't get a good big-picture look at them yet!
BLUE AND GANSEY
my favorite thing is (obviously) the time Gansey just straight up gives her a different name and initially she's like "you can't DO that" but then later she realizes she's so used to him calling her Jane that it's strange when he calls her by her actual name
I think probably once their series is over and they're living life, they're wholesome, but the love story in the books is fucked up (affectionate). he's her true love and she knew the whole time she was going to kill him, and she just...didn't mention it
I'm giving them "Labyrinth" by Taylor Swift, because they're definitely an "uh oh, I'm falling in love" couple.
their sister couple is El and Orion, because El's feelings about enclavers and Blue's feelings about raven boys align! and Orion is the MOST enclave-y enclaver and Gansey is President Cellphone. and also [spoilers redacted]
it is nearly unfathomable for me to take Stiefvater characters out of Stiefvater properies. they're all so formed by their circumstances. who would Blue be without her curse? who would Gansey be without his death? but I would like to see a Glendower is alive AU lol
they're in the Honorable Mentions!

i am very much enjoying my vague void! it's currently blasting hozier at full volume and that's almost louder than my internal screaming (don't worry, everything is fine, i just saw a spider)
i've never once in my life have followed a recipe correctly. all of my measurements are completely random and whatever happens happens. it is no longer in my hands. whatever eldritch entities exist take the wheel. and i absolutely refuse to spell anything in english without autocorrect because y'all have way too many double letters and random vowel placement
thank you! sadly, i won't have a break right now, because we just had christmas vacations, but the start of the new semester is always pretty chill. and you're absolutely right, i should take up necromancy! the snow and the cold will add to my mysterious vibes. i just need to get a big black cape with a hood to complete the aesthetic
i definitely picture everything above 5'6 feet as the same height. 5'7 and 6'2? the exact same thing. no difference here
how is morepork a real bird name. it's just... more pork? but the bird is magnificent. i completely approve of your first order as bird queen, not that you need approval from mere peasants like me, but it's a great order. ohhh salps look really cool, and it does look a lot like it! when you said boob implant i thought of mermaids and them using salps as boob implants but then i realised wait wouldn't jellyfish be better for that? because of their shape? ignoring their little leggies they're quite boob shaped, no? and then i realised that i was thinking about mermaids and alive boob implants... if i had to think it, you have to read it. i'm sorry
i was sold before but now i'm even more sure that i want to hire you. and I'll make sure to have lactose free cheese for the backflips (unless you want the lactose version? i'm not judging). will the biting of ankles cost extra?
that sounds like a brilliant set-up for a horror movie where they kill off all the children one by one. it's absolutely horrifying. if something like that would've happened to me i would've most likely just passed out. whatever happens afterwards is not my problem. and now i really don't want to know what the hell your leg was caught on because that seems like knowledge that would get me killed
ah so you're a fellow dirt eater? according to my mom my favourite thing to do outside when i was a little kid used to be eating sand. just shovelling handfuls of it into my mouth and crying when my mom made me spit it out. which i refuse to believe. if there are no photos it didn't happen
you warm climate people are starting to make me think that i'm better adjusted to the cold than i thought i am! it's either that or our buildings are better heated. i definitely don't know if anyone else calls hot water bottled hotties but i like it so from now on i'm using it
that's so cute! i was clearly a way more selfish child because when i found any amount of money i just kept it and bought candy as soon as i could. i clearly couldn't save money then and i can't now. we have stores like that (or i'm assuming that they're like that solely based on how they sell lollies) and they used to be my favourite thing because you could get so many lollies for such a small price!! and my mom even used to let me order for myself sometimes so i always felt like a very big girl jsjshsbsjk
also the fact that i can't send pictures on anon is a crime (yes i know why and it's good that that's not possible because can you imagine anons being able to send pictures? oh no is all i have to say about it) but anyways. because i have this one super cursed photo that reminded me of you and now i can't share it :((
duuuuude, sick void bro. sounds like a vibing void. I feel like I haven’t seen a spider in awhile. Other than daddy long legs. But they’re chill. They mind their own business.
I nearly always follow recipes exactly. My mum is like oh cook this for about 7 minutes? Yeah sure. I’ll take a wild guess. I’m like they say exactly 7 minutes so I’ll set a timer for 7 minutes and start a stopwatch so if it does seem to need more than 7 I can keep an eye on the extra time and be aware of exactly how long it takes me for next time. Other people are like oh let's see I have [lists 5-10 things in their fridge], hmm...oh I know what I could make with that! I’m like I have beans in my freezer because one recipe required them and no other recipes I know how to make do so what am I supposed to do with these now,,, this is stressful,,, basically I barely know how to cook and recipes are the only things saving me in that area. That is entirely fair. Except for the fuck duck, and murder is not the word you want surely, situations, it’s pretty helpful.
Ohhh I see. At least the start is chill! For a little! Before your entire situation spirals out of hand and you’re behind in every class and it’s taken you a whole day to read 10 pages and you’re exhausted and it’s only week 2. Just me? ok. fair. anyway. I want a cloak so bad. One of my uni friends tempted me to class because she said she was wearing a cloak so my depressed ass honest to god dragged myself out of bed and to said class just to see it. It was worth it. They’re incredible. Everyone should own a big cloak for the aesthetic.
I’m glad it isn’t just me hahaha. I can visualise my own height in feet but everything else is just the same size that is a vague amount taller than me, mentally.
It’s also known as the ruru. But the name morepork amuses me. It’s named after the call it makes haha. It does sound like it’s asking for more pork if you know to listen for that. thank u for ur approval, it means a lot, turns out becoming bird queen didn’t ACTUALLY get rid of my anxiety disorder weirdly enough so validation is great! lmaooo. What if the jellyfish stung them tho? At least salps wouldn’t do you dirty like that. The mermaids would just look like there are hundreds of bugs crawling around in their boobs, flesh shifting as they float around. Which is a vibe. If you’re into that. Jellyfish WOULD make a more solid, single, implant, some of them are definitely boob shaped. But that’s kinda boring no one’s gonna be traumatised by that. Salps on the other hand...yeah, that sight will DEFINITELY traumatise someone.
To be PERFECTLY honest I haven’t done a backflip in years but for lactose-free cheese? Dude. I’ll be going back to training. Gonna be the best backflip you’ve ever seen. As long as it’s not Tasty cheese I am content, but lactose free IS better. The biting of ankles will not cost extra, it is a pleasure to be allowed to do that.
Oh it absolutely would be. It’d be very funny if it reached the wider world bc people would probably be like ok but who would send kids into the bush like that,, it’s an odd concept. meanwhile everyone who grew up in nz is gonna be like y’all, you’re not gonna fuckin BELIEVE what i experienced growing up, it’s real dude. On one hand, I feel like murdering kids in a movie is questionable, on the other hand, It exists, so maybe people would be down for it. I feel like it’d be a good concept even if it wasn’t murdery tho. Like psychological horror? I’m not sure if I’m using that category correctly I don’t watch much horror. A kid following the rope but then being shifted into a different horror dimension but they never take the blindfold off because their teachers said not to and they’d probably have to let go of the rope to do it...I feel like this could work super well as a short film. The viewers see everything. The child just knows something is off and no one is coming when they call for help. I am so down for this. I also do not want to know what my leg was caught on. Some things I am better off not knowing.
yes! I am a fellow dirt eater! We had a sandpit at home (that’s a little bold. It was a large plastic shell that my parents filled with sand. technically a sandpit. but not fancy sdflsdkfsdf) but I don’t think I ever tried to eat it. Then again, I possibly did and just don’t remember because there’s no photo evidence of that one. I’d have to ask my parents sdfhsjdfs, I would however fully believe them if they said yes. it’s very characteristic of me. I don’t doubt it for a second. muuuum that’s my emotional support sand don’t make me spit it out smh the disrespect these days.
Oh I’m absolutely terrible even by most people’s standards around here when it comes to cold and hot temperatures. I remember sitting in the sun in my school shirt and school jersey in summer on a blazing day like it’s a bit chilly, isn’t it? Meanwhile my friends were in the shade absolutely dying from the heat. Likewise in winter I’d be shivering, teeth chattering, dying with my long sleeve thermal, my school shirt, my school jersey, my school jacket, my longs, warm socks and sneakers and gloves and school scarf while ppl would be walking around in a shirt and shorts like it’s a bit warm this winter huh? my body didn’t learn how to thermoregulate and it shows. But yeah NZ does also have a reputation for shittily insulated buildings and such. It shows. skhdfsfs if it’s not common use maybe don’t say can i have a hotty to someone without context but otherwise go ahead lmao. it’s a fun shortened version.
I was typically a very good saver, to the point where my extended family started gifting me gift cards and vouchers for Christmas and my birthday because if they just gave me money I’d put it in my bank account to save towards uni once I hit like, 12 years old. Which I think was a smart move. But apparently, I’m supposed to buy myself ‘something nice’ with it. I think I’m still an okay saver but I’m not as strict anymore. I’m aware of how much I can spare and I’m not just like you can never get anything for yourself ever, so I do get lil things for myself sometimes. oooo yay! At least you know what I mean. But yes. They were the gold mine for lollies. Absolutely terrific stores. My mum would be like hey lindsey how about you order? And I’d be like mother, I am 7 years old and I have an undiagnosed anxiety disorder everyone assumes is child shyness why would you think I would want to do that. Instead I will whisper my choices to you. After therapy tho I felt pretty rad for picking my own lollies by myself. I was like 13 at that point but sdfkjhsdf listen I got there in the end.
sdfkjsdfkjhsdf I like that a cursed photo reminded you of me. That’s all I need to hear. Tumblr said no anon dick pics but they also said no anon cursed photos either,,, very sad. for the latter part. the first part thank god. If I could turn on photos on anon I absolutely would just to see this but I don’t think I can :(

Hi Axelle, I'm currently watching Love Sick for the first time because you always talk about it and it's so good (I'm on ep 4) very lighthearted and funny. But do you know why apparently there are 2 versions an uncut and another, at least on youtube...?
hi!!! oh my god I'm so happy that you're watching (and enjoying) Love Sick thanks to me! don't worry I've watched this series so many times I've got you covered haha:
so basically there are 2 phunnoh kisses that were filmed but were cut, the first one is in season one, I don't remember which episode exactly, maybe between 10 and 12, but basically if you see a scene in a car alluding to a kiss google 'phunnoh love sick uncut kiss' with the ep number and you should find it (in terrible quality but still it's phunnoh's best kiss imo!)
and then in season 2, I don't remember the ep number either but it's in the early ones, basically if you see a forehead kiss in a hotel room search exactly the same thing as for the first cut scene but with the new season and ep number and you'll find an indonesian subbed version of the ep that contains the cut kiss.
last thing: there are many bl cuts of the show but I wouldn't advise you watching them because that's what I did for my first watch and the bl cut actually didn't include some scenes so I would just advise you watch the whole show and fast forward the boring scenes. have a good watch! :)
