Modern AU versions of Tintin and his friends! Notes about their designs under the Read More:

Tintin - A grey and yellow baseball tshirt references his grey sweatervest and yellow shirt look from the earlier comics. Cargo joggers replace his plus fours - plus fours were popular with golfers in the 20s and 30s as athletic wear, so I opted for cargo joggers for that preppy but sporty vibe. He also wears leather trainers and keeps his handy phone in an industrial case. Snowy wears a collar now!

Haddock - when not working on a ship as a merchant captain he opts for a hoodie and sweatpants. He might look sloppy but it's pretty practical for the wild adventures he's dragged into! He's Tintin's exhausted foster father in this AU.

Calculus - I gave him 2000s style rectangular frames to make him feel modern but still kind of dated, like how he wears fashion a few decades behind in the canon comics. I dressed him like my high school physics teachers - he has a necktie, a pocket protector, a zip through fleece and orthopedic shoes. I had frames like these for some time until I broke them at work lol

Chang - as soon as I read the Blue Lotus and saw Chang for the first time I immediately thought he was wearing crocs. I don't know why crocs are so popular. I don't think they're particularly comfortable. They feel sweaty and weird and don't stay on your feet when you run. I don't get crocs. But they're popular in Asia lol (I kept Chang's design super simple, he's an orphan with no money)

Abdullah - I had way too much fun with him! I know Supreme is kinda dated now (it's definitely a 2016 thing) but I still find it funny and the colour scheme fits. A lot of local Muslim teenagers in my area mix sportswear with traditional clothing so I did the same here, but made it obnoxiously bougie lol

Zorrino - I didn't change much for him as his original design is pretty timeless. I gave him socks and slides, a beanie and joggers. His button up shirt is replaced with a polo shirt but the difference isn't big.

while today could have been better, I received a lovely little tintin napkin holder in the mail (thank you raygirl!!), made coffee in my tintin mug, got to wear a cool new tintin shirt I'd bought the other day, and rewatched the 2011 tintin movie again with some peeps. happy 4 months to my beloved :')

Guys sorry it’s taken me ages to reply to this I kinda forgot about it. Anyway, let’s go…

Note: I’m basing this on my own personal style and whether I like their outfits and would wear them myself

John - I like his outfits they are quite academic but are a bit boring though I do like them and would wear them in my day to day life. They are simple. 7/10

Graham - I like his outfits but I probably wouldn’t wear them myself. I love his different colour sports jackets and in the 70s his shirts that he would wear with all the buttons undone it was a vibe. I would wear the ‘Everbody needs something to suck on t-shirt’. 8/10

Terry G - his outfits are unusual but I love them. I like at the Aspen reunion, his tintin jumper and I like his various t-shirts with logos on, like at the Hollywood bowl when he wore a t-shirt with 7up on it. I would wear all of them. I don’t like his style in recent years as he pretty much exclusively wears a t-shirt with some sort of very baggy kimono over the top. I like the 2 items separately but not together. 7/10

Eric - I like the bohemian/hippie vibe that he had in the 60s and 70s (some of it I would wear and some of it I wouldn’t). I like some of his outfits from the 80s/90s and the 2000s (the music note jacket 😩). 5/10

Michael - I feel like John his outfits are very simple, nothing really spectacular about them but I like most of them even the outfits he wears now. 9/10

Terry J - same with Michael and John though I do like some of the more edgy touches he puts for outfits, like his leather jacket and he puts nods to his love for history with a blouse that has vikings on it. The outfits he wore in more recent years are boring. 8/10

MORE TINTIN HEADCANNONS CAUSE IM BORED (if you don't like then just simply scroll by and let me enjoy my bliss please and thank you)

Tintin has two distinct smiles. Both of them are genuine (because he's an optimistic little lad who sees sunshine when it's raining) but one is more so than the other. One is the one everyone sees: the broad grin that so many cameras have flashed at and is on the cover on every edition of Le Vingtiéme Siécle. The one with round apple cheeks and twinkling eyes so full of innocence it makes one wonder if he's truly seen the wrong end of a gun. It's the one he wears often, the signature Tintin grin. The other is more selective, coming out in moments of pure, uncontrolled happiness. Very few people see it and you have to be extremely close. It's different: more lopsided and crooked, leaving a dimple in one of his cheeks. It makes his eyes crinkle into tiny blue rivulets and anyone who catches sight of it can't help but grin back at him too. When Captain Haddock first saw it, it made him realise that Tintin was in fact still a kid (in my headcannon, unless slexidiied, he's 16-18 because that's canon according to the books.)

Tintin is a massive polygot, but not only can he master how to read and write the language, he also can pronounce it clearly that people often forget that his mother tongue is French. The Captain, who lives in England, has a Scottish accent in the movies and speaks what I assume is English, forgets this every time until he catches the reporter muttering something or other in French. Thebkther thing that catches the captain off-guard is that Tintin refuses to call him "Captain" but instead calls him "Capitaine" because French. It's very entertaining; he goes from a perfectly pronounced English accent to the most innocent Belgian voice ever for ONE SOLE WORD then switches back. It drives people up the wall and Tintin finds it absolutely hilarious.

Random one not so much about Tintin, but more about Mrs Finch. When she first had the little teenager move in to her spare flat at 14 (probablybrather common in those days because you stopped going to school after 12 unless you went onto university or higher education and in my head Tintin didn't have the money for that because ✨Depression✨ (as in the Great depression, not the mental illness)) with a couple of suitcases and a trench coat far too big for him and a white puppy playing excitedly at his feet, she swore from that day on that she would look after him with every fibre of her being. She pops up the first night to see if he's settled and has supper and when she finds out that he hasn't had the chance to get groceries, she bistles down the stairs and comes back up with a massive pot of soup, fresh bread and tea. They sat at the little table for ages, talking and getting to know each other. She discovered that this child had a deep passion for books and adventure and made a mental note to get him as many books as she could. (He went from ten books to 30 in the span of two months because of her help. He was very happy with that.) She told him how she had been a nurse in the Great War and that if he was ever feeling ill to pop down to her and she would get him on the mend. What she didn't expect several months later was to hear the door open and close quietly well after midnight. She opened the door to face the intruder and discovered Tintin trying to sneak back into his flat, absolutely drenched from the rain and almost hiding his arm. He said a brief hello and hurried inside, so she grabbed a teapot and hurried up after him. She definitely did not expect to see him sitting at the same small table, his shirt half off as he dabbed at his arm, nor did she expect to see a gun shot wound slicing through his arm. She shrieked, scolded him severely, then ran back and grabbed her first aid kit, came back, asked him what in the bloody hell happened, was he okay, were there any other injuries that needed attending to and very adamantly told him to stay out of trouble. His response? "But Mrs Finch, it's my job. I have to get these stories and that means I get into trouble." She huffed, gave him a look, studied those innocent round doe eyes and sighed. She made him promise that if he ever needed medical help to never be afraid to ask her or else he will get scolded again. There were many late nights of patching him up then chatting over a cup of tea.

I know that Belgium has already been knocked out of the World Cup but I really wanted to make Tintin with the Belgian team shirt, so here it is! I don't think he's a big fan (I think Haddock likes soccer more than he does), but I think maybe he watches Belgium games and maybe wears the shirt even though it's the 2014 one (my brother's been wearing the same one since 2006 so I don't see why not). I kind of thought of some headcanons about Tintin and the World Cup but it's kind of hard having to supplement with my other headcanons about characters' nationalities, maybe I'll try to finish it before the cup ends.

5. What do they like to do in their free time?

In canon we have seen them many times taking walks together, reading, going to performances and cinema etc. It makes completely sense, taking into consideration their chaotic and adventurous life, that they crave peaceful and normal moments.

However, they're still Tintin and Haddock so no way they can stay still for long so I think what they enjoy is sharing new experiences together. I think they like to take their car, taking turns who's driving, and go to different places, with or without scheduling anything (one day they planned a visit to the botanical garden, another just drive without a destination in mind).

Their favourite is definitely picnics, in Marlinspike or elsewhere.

Another thing they do together is editing Tintin's articles. I think Tintin would hand Haddock his articles to give his opinion on them or add any missing detail Tintin might have forgotten to write or hadn't noticed.

11. Do they like choosing each other's outfit?

It's more like Tintin helps Haddock broaden his garderobe. They both don't intervene in each other's preferences, especially Haddock as he believes in Tintin's judgement of styling (and basically everything) more than his own, but unconsciously they choose outfits that the other would like. And since Tintin "borrows" Haddock's sweaters he leaves him no choice but to go shopping and let Tintin choose some for him (he trusts his taste anyway and Tintin wouldn't choose for him something absurd).

Basically Tintin likes to dress up Haddock too besides himself and Milou.

5. What do they like to do in their free time?

Their free time is limited so they prefer to spend it indoors mostly, playing even card games and such (they never play it without a challenge otherwise it's boring) but usually Chang reads aloud his books and Chester listens and may knit while doing so.

If it's outdoors they like to go to museums or to aquarium or a walk (if there's a river, a lake or sea even better).

11. Do they like choosing each other's outfit?

Not really (they both know how to dress themselves) but they do exchange clothes, Chang likes to wear oversized shirts and blouses and Chester sometimes may wear Chang's shoes and shocks because surprisingly they wear the same size.

If they choose outfits for the other it will be in the rare instance of sharing their culture with the other, since neither won't be able to pull it off by themselves. Chester will show him how a kilt is worn and Chang will choose the pieces of traditional Chinese clothes (in both instances both will ensure the other that "yes, this is alright" and take one hundred photos because they are excited).

Nickname: I guess my online moniker, “Moth”, would count as a nickname. Only in online circles though. Technically my irl name that is used most often is my nickname. I like my full name, but it’s a real mouthful. Recently one of my friends started to call me “Toni” which has also been cool.

Amount of sleep: This is so messed up. I don’t think atm I really have a set amount of sleep. During school I’d say I usually get six hours at most. On weekends and non-work days I have nine hours. Recently though I’ve been sleeping about fifteen hours. I seriously don’t know. I’ve got to figure things out.

Dream job: Oh boy! I don’t know if I have a specific career in mind at the moment, but I know for sure I would like to work somewhere in a film related field. Film director for live-action and animation, screenwriter for live-action and animation, television screenwriter, editor, concept designer, storyboard artist...I’m not quite sure what exactly what I’d want to do, but I garner I still have a lot of time to figure that out. I don’t consider any of these things exclusive either. If I can do them all, I guess that would be a dream job.

Movie/book that summarizes me: Ok so I am going to put down a movie AND a book. For movie it would probably be Blade Runner (1982) by Ridley Scott. While it isn’t the film that initially got me interested in movies (that would have to go to The Great Escape), it is the one that I consider the most absolutely perfect. It’s whole presentation, narrative, themes, cinematography, etc. is just so inspirational to me and kind of my singular goal whenever I want to make something. For a book it would probably be Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. If there is two things about me it is that I love stories that blend fantasy and reality, and I love stories with ambivalent main characters.

Current fav song: Probably “This Year” by The Mountain Goats.

Aesthetic: UMM I don’t know if I strictly subscribe to one lol. Most of the time I just wear a T-shirt and jeans with plaid shirt or various sweaters. To give myself more credit, I have been making efforts to wear things that make me happy or make me feel nice. I guess my visual aesthetic preference is a kind of 60′s - 70′s hippie look. Preference for underground psychedelic and kind of surreal art-nouveau design mixed with some vaporwave, dereality-type visuals from 2013-2014.

another of the funniest shit about the adventures of tintin 2011 film is that i'm obsessed with how much sakharine is wearing like is he wearing a formal jacket and some sort of fancy longcoat?? like how many layers does that man need - shirt, waistcoat, jacket, coat?? i know he's dramatic as hell, i just think it's funny as hell. it's also just so much more red, he must be so goddamn insistent knowing his ancestry. couldn't pass up this chance, huh??

Rastapopoulos himself may be out of the picture, but his ghost continues to haunt those who were caught in his web.

A collaboration with @aboardthescheherazade using her OC Marlene Katz - an actress Tintin tries to save in Cigars of the Pharaoh!

Five years later and Tintin is baffled to see Hollywood starlet Marlene Katz turn up at his doorstep asking for help. Formerly under the thumb of Cosmos Pictures, Marlene became an unsuspecting witness to Rastapopoulos’ criminal activity and now the mob is after her, seeking to tie up some loose ends. To top things off, she is due to make a public appearance at The Golden Palm, a prestigious film festival. After years of hiding, Marlene is determined to get her acting career back on track, and this film may be her big break.

Tintin is highly suspicious. Chang, on the other hand, is utterly star struck, and after noticing an uncanny resemblance between the two hatches a ridiculous scheme that may finally put an end to this particular problem. It might just work, but Marlene makes the last minute decision to also go undercover, feeling immense guilt over having Tintin and Chang risk their lives for her.

While Tintin is running around in heels and beating up mobsters Haddock is away on a weekend break with Ramo Nash. Before leaving he asked Chang to keep Tintin away from any incidents and to promise not to throw any house parties.

This was my first collab on this blog and I had a lot of fun bouncing ideas off with Vaye. Her blog was one of the first Tintin blogs I followed - definitely check it out, it’s an absolute treasure trove of resources and research! Below are a few notes of stuff we discussed while making this:

- After the Blue Lotus, Marlene breaks away from Rastapopoulos and pulls back from the film industry to lay low, teaching dance classes instead. He keeps trying to come back to her, leaving her exhausted and paranoid. Since Rastapopoulos always considered Marlene to be pretty stupid he never made much of an effort to properly hide his criminal activities from her, but Marlene was able to slowly piece things together...

- This adventure takes place after St. Benezet’s Basement (the boarding school story) and before Call of the Songbird (Tintin Fucks Up and Steals A Whistle). Tintin is still in the grips of trauma from the canon stories. Chang is starting to settle in. Haddock and Nash’s relationship is in full swing, but they are keeping things quiet from everyone else. 

- In some sketchbook comics I did to flesh out ideas there’s hints of Tintin being gay and asexual, his complete lack of interest in Hollywood actresses and his mild irritation of people’s judgements being clouded by crushes! Chang’s attraction to Marlene however, foreshadows his feelings for Tintin later on down the line.

- There’s a role reversal theme going on here. Both Tintin and Marlene are victims of Rastapopoulos but in very different ways. By playing each others’ roles they both can get a clearer picture of how Rastapopoulos hurt people, and therefore a better understanding of their own traumas. Tintin is usually spontaneous and rarely makes himself known, but here he is playing a set character. Marlene as an actress, on the other hand, is used to receiving direction from others, but circumstance pushes her to improvise. I can imagine her using her skills as an actor to get into character as an ace reporter to fake some much needed bravery!

- Marlene’s disguise is literally just stuff she pulls from Tintin’s and Chang’s closets. She’s wearing Tintin’s trenchcoat, dress shirt and suspenders and Chang’s spectator shoes, trousers and scarf!

- Marlene is a very skittish person but will be compelled to do what she believes is the right thing. As Vaye put it, “Marlene’s bravery under fire is that she’s like the one person in a room who’s willing to get a spider outside...” Marlene is also older than Tintin and pretty much views him as a child, even though he’s in his early 20s at this point. She feels incredibly guilty about what Rastapopoulos did to him and the fact he’s risking his life for her. She feels some level of responsibility for him.

This all started because I thought it would be cool for Tintin to beat some guys up in drag

THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FRAME THAT I JUST ADORE AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. BUT GOD, HE LOOKS SO CUTE. the short sleeves, his shirt collar being pulled down ever so slightly, his shirt being tucked into his belt - and speaking of which, him wearing a BELT... OUGH. Ok fun story about the print that Persephone is wearing:

TL/DR: my print is in a museum for a good cause!

I wanted Persephone’s dress to be really sweet and pretty but have a devastating print (because of course she would shop at Disturbia), so I made a really simple repeating pattern of skulls and pomegranates in a cross-cross, and put a semi-transparent layer of darkness over it. Then I just filled the whole dress - it reminded me of old Tintin comics where when he was wearing a check shirt the pattern was just perfect in the shape regardless of what way the figure was turning (ie: lazy!) The drawing was posted for ClassicsTober ‘22 and immediately a few people asked for the pattern, so I put it on my Redbubble, on both light and dark versions.

Later I got a DM from Karl Anthony Mercer, who was in the process of curating a case of objects looking at autism and neurodiversity in Colchester Museum's collections, of which there were basically none - literally 2 out of 200,000. So, being autistic himself, and working for CuratingForChange, and not having time for a big community celebration to develop an exhibit, they had decided to get Karl to put some of his own stuff in a case instead to start a discussion exhibit, and one of those things was a particular scarf, and did I mind if it went in?…

The scarf with Persephone’s Print on it of course went into the museum display. You don’t say no to that. Especially as this is how Karl described his reasons for wanting it in:

I wanted to include the pomegranate-skull scarf because thematically I want this case to be a katabasis of sorts - autistic lives, once hidden in the underworld, will be brought back to life and I think Persephone is a fantastic representation for that. She was not taken to the underworld of her own will, after all!

The display was called Un/Masked, looking at the absence of autistic and neurodiverse heritage in museums. And where was the display? Colchester Castle. Which was built on the foundations of the Roman Temple to Claudius, burned by Boudicca. Be still my heart.

And that’s how, very unexpectedly, a very unexpected piece of my work ended up in a freaking museum!! ❤️
