Not justifying Armand, but you don't get through that amount of physical, sexual, emotional abuse, brainwashing, isolation etc to the point of amnesia and dissociation since you're a human child until you're a centuries old vampire (and vampirism amplifies their traumas and emotions) without accidentally reprogramming your brain in a really messed-up way. Specially when you're stuck in a teenage brain forever. This is not someone that lived a safe and privileged life, not even a remotely decent one, and decided to be evil. In many ways Armand forgot or didn't even get to learn what is meant to be human and have a healthy lifestyle and relationships with people. Obviously, it would take him a long time to catch up with his humanity and even develop a sense of identity (one of his many issues too).

#saw this on twt and thought of them and almost started tweaking #also saw someone on twt reading this as an analogy for having a depressed mother and started tweaking even more #idk i think i've come to learn to read Elara as someone as severely depressed as Maven is #facing the consequences of having the life she tricked herself into thinking she was destined for #then feeling an all-encompassing emptiness and detachment to everything she thought she craved #i think she tricked herself into thinking she was destined to bear the king a son because she had no other choice #(i think she was definitely pressured by her family to become queen. but house merandus' generational familial trauma is something i'm #not gonna go into now. but her house -and possibly close family- definitely had something to do with her marrying tiberias).#so she has no choice really #and upon having a son i imagine she oscillated between being obsessed over him beecoming stronger than her step-son #(what we know about her forcing maven to walk when he was little. and other things we don't know about propably)#and feeling a detachment so deeply rooted for maven that it scared her #of course she also loved him #and tried to be a good mother to him as best as she could #but i also think there are some parts of her she never allowed maven -or ayone- to reach #no matter how close he tried to be to her and how many times he tried to cross that bridge between them #especially when he was little. but tbh also when he was older #and this image reminded me of that part of their dynamic idk #also thought of this image when elara died and maven would still clinge to her. even if all that was left of his mom was half a corpse #but then i remembered he didn't even have a corpse to bury. and i almost collapsed on the floor #they make me so terribly sad don't even joke lad #merandus family #maven calore #elara merandus #red queen series #red queen

so far it feels like all of the praise, or at least hype, for arcane is about playing around with the facts of the champions and not the actual meaning to their stories

im pretty sure this applies to other champs too but like theone foremost in my mind rn is everything to do with Orianna. people are going like oh, viktor will make her a machine! or singed won't be able to bring her back. Orianna's just dead or asleep in stasis and this is not at all the clockwork girl who tried to befriend an amusement park automaton because she was so lonely

it feels like this with warwick, with viktor, jayce even ekko and kinda jinx — season 2 has been nothing but. playground toys. make-believe in the sandbox. action figures are being mashed together but nothing of what made these characters Themselves is actually. Here.
