tumblr in reddit terms

blogs: personal subreddits where the theme/topic is 99% of the time just “me and whatever the hell i feel like at the moment”. for reference, the most common other theme rn is “wizard roleplay that never breaks character”

reblogs: crossposts. these are crucial to maintaining tumblr’s ecosystem. due to blogs generally having fewer followers than subreddits have subscribers, this is the way that posts get seen and passed around. the vast majority of posts on a person’s blog tend to be reblogs, so if the people you follow dont reblog a whole lot, your dashboard is gonna be a ghost town. post limit (combined total of reblogs and original posts per day) is 250, so feel free to go hog wild

tags: this one is complicated. theyre a combination of flairs and Comments But Low-key. you can use them for organization and to avoid seeing content you dont want to (go to your blog, settings, account settings, content you see, and then add tags you want tumblr to warn you about before seeing it). if op tags the post #reddit (in the tags, not the body of the post), itll show up in the #reddit tag when anyone searches that tag. tags are also used for comments that dont really add anything to the post. you know how a jpeg gets kinda gross when its been through a million screenshots and has ifunny watermarks and shit? thats what adding “lmao same” as a comment does to a post. comments stay on reblogs, while tags show up in 4 places: op’s notifications, the notifs of whoever you reblogged it from, when someone clicks on the “notes” button of a post and actively looks for the tags left on it, and when people view your specific reblog of the post (like a follower would on their dashboard)

likes: upvotes but weaker. almost everyone turns off all the algorithms (settings, account settings, dashboard preferences, toggle off the first 3 options. also, make sure your dashboard is on "following" and not "for you". this is highly recommended), so leaving a like doesnt boost the post in any way. they still matter to some people. you can also use them to bookmark a post and go back to your likes later

enthusiastic and/or hyperbolic tags: reddit gold. you wanna let op know you like their art? leave something like ”#printing this out and stapling it to my forehead #op you wanna get married?” in the tags

pornbots: both reddit and tumblr have an issue with them. we block and report them on sight. they usually have hot women as their icons, no posts or reblogs, and a description like “22, brazil, nurse <3″. try to not look like that if you dont wanna get blocked by everyone you follow

blocking: you have this as well, but it seems like a bigger deal on reddit. the reason we are not twitter is because we block bitches who annoy us and move on with our day. do not feed the trolls

hm.... a loaded question. short answer for how i handle this:

I don't.

i just. don't. i don't even try to process what i know for sure is a bad take at all, and i make it a point to curate my online spaces as much as possible.

(or at least, i do on very very rare occasions if i feel arsed enough to hop on my keyboard to smashing out a more educated post about it based on my own understanding. more on this in a bit.)

if i go into a fandom tag and i see rampant nonsense, such as during the 1st two months of fire emblem engage's release or some incredible pumpkin spice latte takes, and i feel like it's just too much bc im getting angry, i just disengage. i might read if i feel like it, but if its too hostile i don't add to the conversation. i leave. i don't pass go bc i have waaaay better things to do than potentially engage in a conversation im already not happy to have.

in some occasions i even block. if i feel like someone is being a dipshit in the posts i make with their tags even, i block.

and i suspect im not the only one. how often do you see asians who reside outside of the west actively partake in fandom discussions? its such a drain of energy when it goes bad. most asians are working faaaaar longer hours than the average westerner in the average office setting. i mean, fuck, man. if i want to have fun, im not coming to a place i know i wont be having much. (ofc we are all having it bad. the point is: limited energy is a big factor for why going against the general set consensus is a bad idea)

Yeah sure it wasnt coined by black people but the context it’s currently used as was predominantly used by black people. ALL people who are not black benefit from and contribute to antiblackness, even if they are marginalized themselves. That kind of dynamic doesnt exist in other contexts (unless we’re talking about transfem + transmisogyny, but that’s something you’d have to talk to someone who is transfem about. Plus they have their own word for  “non-transfem”). Using it in contexts outside of antiblackness is appropriative (Yall are annoying as fuck with the “non-aspec” “non-lesbian”(this term also has anti-bi roots btw) “non-bi” shit etc, stop it. Why don’t you like the n-word being compared to LGBT slurs?

Race and Sexuality/Gender aren’t comparable topics because each deals with a different history of oppression. I don’t care about slur discourse that much because I don’t even use/reclaim any myself except the n-word.

I have a problem with nonblack LGBT people co-opting black culture and struggle(like they always do), especially for trivial online discourse.

And to be honest it goes deeper than slur discourse. Every other day someone is weaponizing the oppression of black trans women, or comparing “cishet aces/aros” in the LGBT community to white/nonblack people invading black spaces (you know, something that ACTUALLY takes resources away from the people who need it, see the cultural appropriation of Black African and Blac American culture in literally any nonblack community while black people get demonized for said culture), or tokenizing their black friends to get away with something blatantly racist. Yes and no. I do think aces + aros are lgbt but they still should have spaces outside of the lgbt community because they have issues that both overlap with the lgbt community but are also different as well. tips to improve your tumblr experience

feel free to follow tags you’re interested in, but 1. dismiss posts (hit the x or “this post in particular sucks” or whatever) as soon as you see them, because tumblr will just show them to you over and over until they drive you insane, 2. blacklist tags related to that tag if you dont want to see them, and 3. block people if their posts annoy you

i keep trying to get people to where i cant fucking see their shit, i really am, those few creators i dont want to touch with a twenty foot pole because they make me uncomfortable but im just wandering around looking at nice peoples blogs and theyre interacting with these people and reblogging from these people and its not like i can stop them, its my fault but i fucking hate seeing these peoples shit i dont like people who dont tag vaguely nsfw content and i dont like seriously suggestive shit that isnt tagged make your blog private for fucks sake i dont care at least fucking tag it thats not a lot to ask for

so! a week or so ago, i annoyed you all by constantly reblogging a link to a survey to help improve my blog? 53 of you guys responded which was really cool so thanks to those who take time out of their day to do so! below the cut, i’ve responses and next steps to the things you guys said as well as responses to things you’ve said so if you said something and you wanna see if i responded, click read more. or if you’re just curious:

My queue is currently set at 8 posts a day. This means a post every three hours. Is this too little, too less or okay?

that was question one and these were the results:

81.14% said “alright”

next steps: the queue will stay as it is since its an overwhelming majority!

Do you mind if I ask why you dislike people adding commentary in the text area of a reblog of gifs as opposed to the tag? I've done it several times myself but I didn't realize I was doing anything wrong! I didn't know there was an etiquette about it. It's okay if you'd rather not get into it!

i don’t know about “an etiquette” but for me there’s a lot of factors involved here, and i’m pretty sure a lot of content creators would agree with most of what i’m about to say.

the number one thing is that the caption of a gifset (at least, for me and many others) is like the cover page of a book, or the title of a painting… it’s the place where the viewer/reader looks to see what the actual post was about, what the creator intended u to understand from the post/gifset. when i look at the caption of a gifset i’m hoping to see what the original poster wanted me to see, not every other person’s comment about it, or their emoji reaction to it, or their need to @ a person because they don’t know about the little message arrow underneath the post. all of this is completely unnecessary for me to see, as a re-blogger, and especially as the OP. adding to a caption makes the post longer, it makes the post undesirable for people to reblog because who actually cares about your comment except you? maybe a couple of your followers, but the majority of people who see it will just ignore and not reblog a post OR delete the caption entirely because of it. how can this NOT bother the person who originally posted the work? for example, i noticed a certain post of mine has about 10 comments attached to the caption. who’s gonna reblog all of that shit?? no. that only leads to deleting the caption. which, to me, is even worse.

first of all there are a few different types of things that people might add to the caption when reblogging, and some, in fact, don’t bother me at all. here’s a message i sent to someone who @’d someone in the caption of my gifset, maybe it will help you understand:

In this case when it comes to tagging people in the captions of a gifset 2 things apply: thats precisely what the little msg arrow is for, so you don’t have to do that and add unnecessary space to the set as it gets reblogged from you. second, a lot of people don’t like reblogging gifsets with long captions, and when they see things like that added for no reason they tend to just delete the whole caption instead of reblogging from the source. then my piece is missing its caption as it continues to get passed around. that happened to one of my sets a long time ago- one popular blog reblogged from someone who had deleted my caption and there’s been almost a thousand reblogs since then missing the caption. i’m sure most creators don’t worry about that and wouldn’t reach out to you, but it happens to really get on my nerves because the caption is for the caption of my gifset, it’s the “title” of the post so to speak, and it’s all i want people to see when they reblog it. just think of it as like, picking up a nice book, flipping thru it and then leaving your review or your name in ink on the front cover. there’s no erasing it and it’s stuck to the original work forever, unless someone rips off the entire cover. thats just kinda how i feel about it.

i realize that paragraph was a bit redundant, but sometimes repeating something in different words makes a difference.

other things that get added to a caption that bother me (and plenty of people- i keep saying this because i’ve had the conversation with other creators and i know im not alone): emojis. why?? why do u have to add a smiley face or a heart under the caption of a post? you add an entire inch to the post that people have to put on their blog if they’re too lazy or can’t reblog from the source. that’s fucking annoying. there’s no reason for this.

another thing is negative comments. it shouldn’t be difficult to understand why an OP wouldn’t want that attached to their gifset and making its way around tumblr. i dont think i need to add to this statement. just keep your negativity to yourself or your tags. positive comments that are insightful or add to the initial intent of the post are always welcome. you can see that i’ve responded positively to those types of additions in the past and rarely ask people to delete them (i’m not talking about comments like “my love!!” or “he’s the best!!”- these add nothing to the post and have a perfectly appointed place- the tags).

i hope this answered your question in a comprehensible way. i tried not to lose my temper while writing this, and i had to wait a day to respond because this is something that’s apparently very important to me and i wanted to make sure i was clear-minded and articulate about it. i hope it worked.

I second that @daredevil062488 ! Still I'm heavily annoyed by hypocrites though. I personally enjoyed IF S1 and I don't care if saying that bothers anyone. Was it perfect? No but was it as terrible as people made it out to be? No. I felt there was definitely room for improvement and luckily we just might get it in IF S2 with a new show runner and new writers.

That said there is something I disagree with the OP on in regards to Danny's cameo in LC S2. I don't think it was that great of an episode nor was it well written and the worst part about it was the fight choreography during the warehouse/club scene. They actually had Finn slow down while delivering those kung fu moves to a soundtrack that made me want to fall asleep. I get that it's Cage's series but that was a BAD call restraining Jones like that. It just made the fight look weird and unconvincing. Those kind of martial arts requires speed so the director failed there.

The high points of the episode was Jones' portrayal of a much more calmer, wiser and maturing Danny Rand yet he still maintains that playfulness which I appreciated. What people failed to realize about IF S1 is that he grew up in Kun lun abused daily and unable to learn proper social skills. He was friggin 10 when he disappeared living in some magic land for 15 years, why the hell would he return to N.Y. in an adult frame of mind? I swear people's logic on this escapes me. In my opinion Finn did what he could in S1 but I'm glad people are taking notice of his talent now when I've always known he's good at what he does. I agree this LC episode did give us a nice snippet of the new development they're doing with Danny so I'll give credit where it's due.

I just find it ignorant looking at posts like this by anti Danny people who'd given Jones sh*t for S1 and even after he got cast as Danny. So people had already made their minds up to hate him before watching the show. I've never seen so much hate for a fictional character and the actor like Danny and Finn in my life its disgusting. This is certainly the main reason I don't like venturing in the Danny tag anymore because all I see is hate and I don't want to be around it.

My blog is a positive place. There are characters I greatly dislike in all these shows sure, everyone has their preferences. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna clog up these characters' main tag with anti posts. Or send the actor hate on his/her social media because I dislike their characters. I just write and post about things I like and give fair criticisms to the negative. I swear people in this fandom have nothing better to do than to dump on Danny any way they can. He's imperfect but so are the others and fans forget that. LC is especially far from perfect he's done his fair share of shady crap like attempting to kill that innocent bus driver who he thought killed his wife until Jessica stopped him/told him the truth. Which means he was about to use his powers with the intention to 'murder' someone who didn't deserve it. Tell me why doesn't Cage ever get criticized for that?

Sorry for the long rant I just needed to get this out of my system. I'm tired of seeing hate in the Danny tag but even more exhausted by hypocritical people. Please to the OP dont take what im saying to heart. I'm personally excited for IF S2 it can't be any worse than Jessica Jones S2 which was AWFUL. I like to think it'll be a great season and one that will really allow Finn to shine as Danny Rand.

So what Luke Cage season 2 is telling me is that under good direction and a solid script, Finn Jones can turn in a good Danny Rand/Iron Fist performance. Which means the poor reception of Iron Fist season 1 wasn’t because of Finn but because of Scott Buck, the writing team, and Netflix for rushing the production since they needed to get to the Defenders. 

Finn really didn’t deserve the hatred he got and this is coming from a guy who also criticized his performance.

I want to start reading the transformers comics but i dont know where to start?(I kind of started reading the IDW comics, but i feel there was something before im missing)

HI! So I’m not exactly a veteran of the IDW series myself, nor am I a transformers veteran but I have read most what IDW has to offer. 

So I’ll start off by saying what everybody says: Start with either More than Meets the Eye or Robots in Disguise. These two sister stories are fresh new stories after the events of The Transformers. However it’s a bit difficult to start with The Transformers since you do need to read all the other stuff that came before it like All Hail Megatron, the ‘ation’ series and so on. The Transformers is about the war, like every other content from the franchise, while the sister series are the starting stories that happen AFTER THE WAR. Which is pretty huge because this hasn’t happened before. They also talk about the past events that happened but they aren’t extremely important to their own stories so you don’t have to worry about it. 

An issue to kick off these series is called The Death of Optimus Prime. Where the broken Matrix halves are given to Rodimus and BumbleBee before Opti- Orion Pax yolo’s out of Cybertron. But you don’t have to read this either.

More than Meets the Eye is…probably the better one yeah. It’s about Rodimus and how he goes on a quest on a giant ship called the Lost Light with a merry band of 200+ misfit Cybertronians who don’t really know how to deal with the aftermath of their great war so they decide to leave. Their quest? To find the Knights of Cybertron, are they real? Are they a myth? The map to them is written on Rodimus’ half of the Matrix so they’re keeping their fingers crossed.  It’s a more character driven story and has THe best art. (thank you Alex Milne I’ll miss thee in Lost Light (I’m still not over the events of Chaos JRo I’ll never be over it)) and the cast is large and absolutely lovely. You’ll find yourself falling in love with characters you never thought you’d fall in love with and it’s just a great time. 

I personally have not read Robots in Disguise in its entirety just yet, but the main focus for this one is BumbleBee and how he’s dealing with Cybertron since the war is over and now the neutrals from the war have come back. It gets pretty intense though because first of all, tensions are really high. Even with the war over, not a lot of bots really know how to deal with the peace. Secondly, Starscream,  and thirdly,

The Dark Cybertron crossover. 

Yeah, a crossover. It’s not that difficult to follow but it is a bit annoying. It jumps from one issue to another but you’ll notice when you read and you’re like “I don’t remember this happening at all?” That’s when it starts. It also says Dark Cybertron on the cover so that also helps. I personally love this crossover because of the ending and how it’s a catalyst for all the crazy jazz that affects the sister series after DC. 

More than meets the eye ends at issue 57 and continues with Lost Light

Robots in Disguise ends at issue 55 (and holy fuck that ending) and continues with Optimus Prime (because he’s never gonna quit but for gods sakes seriously op)
