#i was going in expecting there to be queer characters on the show

Unfortunately I think the root of so much OFMD discourse is that OFMD is a show that is not subtle but also does not talk down to viewers like they're stupid. The show has clear and cohesive themes (what we're taught about being a man is wrong, building queer community, the journey of learning to live authentically, etc.) but it expects you to keep up. This is great and I wish more shows did it. Even though OFMD is about as subtle as a brick through your window, and if it's trying to tell you something you will know, it always feels as if it is engaging in discussion with the viewer and introducing us to its themes, allowing us to put together the pieces as we go rather than holding our hands.
And yeah honestly it feels a lot of the time that people just didn't do that and have been making up their own show instead of engaging with this one lmao. And that's how we still get discourse that, like, gets mad at us for saying Izzy is a side character who had an atagonistic role like that's somehow controversial instead of just. what happened in the show. and people who enjoy the show as written might not want to treat fanon as canon. There is such a thing as actively reading against the text and the problem with all the discourse that remains most persistent in this fandom is that it's always something like "Ed and/or Stede actually suck and are awful" and it doesn't understand it's actively reading against the text with that take. Like yeah every good story has many different interpretations but there is a difference between "interpretation that is actually rooted in what the show is trying to do and say" and "shit you are making up to justify disliking the main characters"

I’m thinking about how the ending puts more context to jayvik’s entire relationship in s1, not just how they diverge paths but just the basis of it in a way like — so, if we see CaitVi being build up as strangers who develop attractions to friends, to crush, to lovers in s1 so writers can put conflict between them before patching it up again, jayvik is more written as friends who are so worked up with their works to even realize how deep their bond is, kinda broken up early on so so so far gone so that in s2 they can be patched up again in a nonsensical beyond the universe gay way. The whole Jayce seemingly attracted to Mel is the diversion. THAT SEX SCENE WAS MEANT TO NOT ONLY FOR YOU TO SYMPATHIZE WITH VIKTOR BUT ALSO TO BREAK YOUR LITTLE TENDER YAOI HEART. Because here I am, so dumb and so naive and probably so distrustful due to how every show handles queer materials, thinking that “well of course the show isn’t gonna make jayvik canon, of course they’re gonna pair up Jayce and Mel because one pair of gay main characters is enough — plus Jayce is a dude and you know how straight cis male audience will respond to gay male characters, lesbians okay and gays not” — well, I WAS WRONG. THAT WAS A YAOI BUILD UP. Which I am of course delighted to, but at the same time (breaks into Step’s “One For Sorrow”) I WANTED YAOI BUT LOOK WHAT IT’S DONE TO ME.
Bonus personal opinions: I initially had this hesitation to fully invest on jayvik while I knew my heart was there because I felt Viktor deserve better and Jayce felt like a jerkass of a boyfriend — but that was necessary. You have to witness how naive Jayce was and how he unknowingly put Viktor in that sort of emptiness or it wouldn’t make that much impact in s2 . There is sorta like a comeuppance thing that’s going on with Jayce, that he then understands what he does wrong too. That pays off. That really really pays off. All the “ugh I wish it could’ve been this way for them” is all answered in s2. I really didn’t expect it to come because of the aforementioned distrust.
Man this fucking yaoi drama I swear. But god bless it. God bless yaoi.

hey psst c'mere... no a little closer... a little closer- there we go
Loop lips are part of a racist caricature of Black people. Stop drawing Black characters with loop lips. I don't care how they look in canon, it's racist.
okay that's all you can go
#one piece#usopp#goes for other black characters too but this is the one that comes to mind rn.#not gonna get into other shit like 'lightening their skin to make them look prettier teehee'#or 'but they look better with wavy/straight hair!¡!!' or any of the number of other stuff ive seen#bc like. im not even sure folks can handle this one simple thing lmao#many people are great about this but theres still quite a few who are ass#'um! well the creator did it this way and i like him! and he did it on his white characters too!' dont give a shit.#stop drawing racist caricatures. i like op too but im not riding that guy's dick and twisting myaelf in knots trying to justify all his BS#we can agree he's bad at drawing women and he fumbles how he handles queer characters (sometimes. this is mostly referring to momoiro)#but you can't listen to folks who are constantly saying 'hey this is a racist depiction of black people. please dont draw like that'#like???#im gonna keep it 100 with you guys. i love one piece. its got me through some dark times. ive loved it for a long long time#i dont expect the creator to ever give me the time of day#but english fandom? english fandom i can change. and english fandom i can hold to a BARE MINIMUM standard of 'dont be racist'#and yet i still get disappointed. far more often than i should.#ignorance is one thing but the people who DOUBLE DOWN are the worst#thanks for telling me you prioritize your comfort over not being wildly offensive to me and people like me#idfk where i was going with this im just so goddamn tired#if u wanna know more about what im talking about in the post just look up the wiki for minstrel shows & jim crow

i wish we had bi representation that really feels like it was made for bi people and understands bi people
#i want stories that focus on the self-discovery of a bisexual person! that show the self-doubt the uncertainty the internalized biphobia#'am i really bisexual? maybe i'm just straight and i'm lying to myself maybe i'm actually a lesbian and i'm complying with society's#expectations... does bisexuality even truly exist?' these kind of thoughts that i've struggled and at times keep struggling with#the bi-cycle the feeling that you're never going to belong anywhere the fear of being actually a bad person because of your bisexuality#the feeling of being an intruder in the lgbt community because of biphobia and bi erasure and feeling like an alien in the straight world#the loneliness that not having a bisexual community to talk to and quell your doubts causes...#while most queer stories can't even make their characters say the word bisexual#i've forgot to mention the 'what if i'm actually asexual' in the questioning mix#there are more things that i'd like to say but they all belong to the 'does my bisexuality make me a bad person' folder#sue talks

I feel like I've seen a lot of complaints about the pacing of S2 of Arcane, with plenty of people saying they're going to "fill in" that space with fanfic as if it's an unusual task or an exceptionally bad thing to have happen.
It's a really interesting difference to me between fanfic as I've known it and the more recent expectation that the primary point of fandom is that something you like should become canon. I don't view fic as a means of proving that I get or care about canon the most, but I get the impression that's how some people approach it.
Like of course you're going to fill in the things that happen off screen with fic. Of course you're going to elaborate on what you think was happening in a character's head when we didn't see their pov. These are some of the reasons fic exists. Frankly I think it's great, as a fanfic enjoyer (who sometimes remembers how to write), when there's a time jump with so much runway to play with.
But even setting aside the many opportunities for fic, I also don't think that a faster pace with things happening off screen is a bad way to tell a story.
Not everything has to be spelled out on screen for a narrative to work. It just means that the creators actually trust you to have an investment in the character's inner world so that you can infer what's going on without Caitlyn having to turn to the audience to say, "I haven't approved of Ambessa's techniques, as shown through multiple conversations, and Vi using a term of endearment in this moment has reassured me of our connection and that she'll have my back, so I am going to take a chance to do what I think is right."
It genuinely seems like some of the complaints is that the characters have more depth than they show on the surface, but that's a good thing? That's strong writing. That's the creators trusting you, sincerely, with the idea that you are smart enough to know that characters in a story are doing things even when they're not on the screen.
#arcane#arcane s2 spoilers#arcane spoilers#i'm not going to say arcane is one of the most sophisticated shows on tv or something#but i do think the bar has been placed under the floor#the show just expects you to understand that things happen without it telling you explicitly that's what's going on#it expects that you're paying attention to earlier conversations and carrying that knowledge forward into the next scene#and i know that a lot of media that actually has queer characters does not ask this of us#so maybe people have gotten lazy#but it's wild to me to act like it's an innately bad thing for a show to ask you to engage your imagination to piece time skips together#anyway

#it’s crazy to me that people are just fully expect gay eddie to happen when there just#hasn’t been any build up to it at all#even buck and tommy had a brief moment in the episode before 7x04#like it’s one thing to think it’s possible (i don’t really because i’m pretty sure ryan has no interest in playing queer eddie)#but to just like. assume it’s going to?#people are reallyyyy setting themselves up huh#people do remember that chris is still gone and he still very much has unresolved issues related to shannon right?#right???#it’s funny how fast certain shippers will just forget chris’s existence when it doesn’t serve them lmao#eddie has way too much shit going on for it to be about that lmao#buck and tommy might break up in 8x06 who knows#i don’t think they will but that’s a much more reasonable assumption than#assuming this show targeted at 30-50 year olds is gonna do another coming out arc a second season in a row with the last single straight+#character they have left#like this isn’t iwtv or even spn#please be aware of what you’re watching and what ryan has been teasing this whole time through interviews i beg#anyway#i only follow a handful of b*ddie shippers anymore so i see the occasional post from That side#and i’m concerned how they’re gonna lash out when they inevitably don’t get what they want lmao

#I started watching friends because I needed something light I wouldn't start bingeing and bc I've never actually watched the show before#and I'm only 10 episodes in and I'm in trouble#All this years the impression I got from tumblr (and in general)is that it's straight-people-tv the show#but now I'm like 'canon gay and lesbian characters???? In my 90's tv show???? It's more likely than you think'#It's refreshing seeing queer characters being explicitly stated to be queer?? Not just hinted at/danced around/ avoiding stating labels?#not saying the show doesn't have problems or smth but I didn't expect to be so pleasently surprised#Also I'm getting so much gender envy for chandler I'm going to cut my hair this week#and I'm in trouble bc I am actually liking the show and want to binge#the exact thing I planned to avoid#I have a final assignment due on Sunday and then a bunch of tests

something something my benchmark of how canonly queer something is at this point is comparing it to f/e, so if you're losing to that then you're losing chess to the dumbest dog imaginable
#also e/ngage is hilariously not very queer despite that you can marry almost every character#i dont give a rats ass about the avatar ships outside of the codependent mess that's c/hrobin!!!#if rando soldier guy 1 aint marrying rando guy 2 then what's the point!!!#but also urgh that game is all royals and retainers booo#but anyway back to my point#this means p/ersona is below hell#but also people going nuts for gf's 'rando has a crush on another rando he never talked to' needs better standards#rantings rambles#'but the spinoff made more characters being queer canon!!!' yeah and that new m/arvel show apparently has actual queer characters too#doesnt stop you losing to a dog if you start expecting shit from them

So I've seen a few too many people on twitter talking about The Kiss Scene from the new Scott Pilgrim anime. People saying it's fetishistic and indulgent, people calling it male gazey, etc. And while the kiss itself is certainly a bit exaggerated, I felt like writing a bit about why I disagree, and why context is important, like it always is. But it basically turned into an extended analysis on the metatextual treatment of Roxie Richter. So bear with me. It's a long post.
What really matters about this scene is not the kiss itself, but what precedes it. Not even just the fight scene just before it, but what precedes the whole anime series, really. And that's the Scott Pilgrim comic book, and the live action movie. Because in both, Roxie is a punchline.
She's a joke. Her character starts and ends with "one of the exes is actually a girl, I bet you didn't expect that." Jokes are made about Ramona's latent bisexuality, the movie especially treating it as funny and absurd, and her validity as a romantic interest is entirely written off by Ramona as being "just a phase." There's a fight scene, she's defeated by a man giving her an orgasm which implicitly calls her sexuality into question (come on), and the movie just moves on. It sucks. It really, really sucks.
The comic fares a little better. It never veers into outright homophobia like the movie does, and while the line about Ramona having gone through a phase remains, Roxie actually gets one over on Scott when Ramona briefly gets back with Roxie. But Roxie is still only barely a character. Like all the other evil exes, she's just a stepping stone towards the male protagonist's development. She barely even gets any screentime before she's defeated by Scott's "power of love." But Roxie stands out, since she's the only villain who is queer, or at least had been confirmed queer at that point (hi Todd). In a series that champions multiple gay men in the supporting cast, the single undeniable lesbian in the story is a villain. She's labeled as evil, made fun of, pushed aside in favor of the men, and then discarded. Her screentime was never about her, or her feelings for Ramona. It was about the straight, male protagonist needing to overcome her. And that was Roxie Richter. An unfortunate victim of the 2010s.
Fast forward to current year, and the new anime series is announced. Everybody sits down to watch the new series expecting another retelling of the same story, and.... hang on, that straight male protagonist I mentioned just died in the first episode. And now it's humanizing the villains from the original story. And there's Roxie, introduced alongside the other evil exes in the second episode, and she's being played entirely straight, without a punchline in sight. No jokes are made about her gender, no questions are made of her validity as one of Ramona's romantic interests. The narrative considers her important. In one episode, she already gets more respect than she did in either of the previous iterations of Scott Pilgrim. And this isn't even her focus episode yet... which happens to be the very next one.
The anime series goes to great lengths to flesh out the original story's villains and to have Ramona reconcile with them. And I don't think it's a coincidence that Roxie gets to go first. While Matthew Patel gets his development in episode 2, Roxie is the first to directly confront Ramona, now our main protagonist. This is notable too because it's the only time the exes are encountered out of order. Roxie is supposed to be number 4, but she's first in line, and later on you realize that she's the only one who's out of sequence. She's the one who sets the precedent for the villains being redeemed. She's the most important character for Ramona to reconcile with.
What follows is probably the most extensive, elaborate 1 on 1 fight scene in the whole show. Roxie fights like a wounded animal, her motions are desperate and pained. Ramona can only barely fight back against her onslaught. Different set-pieces fly by at breakneck speed as Roxie relentlessly lays her feelings at Ramona's feet through her attacks and her distraught shouts. And unlike the comic or the movie, Ramona acknowledges them, and sincerely apologizes. And the two end up just laying there, exhausted, reminiscing about when they were together.
Only after this, after all of this, does the kiss scene happen. Roxie has been vindicated, she has reconciled with the person who hurt her, the narrative has deemed that her anger is justified and has redeemed her character. And she gets her victory lap by making the nearest other hot girl question her heterosexuality, sharing a sloppy kiss with her as the music triumphantly crescendos.
It's... a little self-congratulatory, honestly. But it's good. It's redemption for a character who had been mistreated for over a decade. And she punctuates the moment by being very, very gay where everyone can see it, no men anywhere in sight. Because this is her moment. And then she leaves the plot, on her own accord this time, while humming the hampster dance. What a legend. How could anything be wrong with this.

As Gravity Falls reenters the void, and the inevitably of fanfiction begins to recirculate, there is a comment I fear I must send out to the general public.
As a trans man who gets, like, -1 representation in shows that aren’t explicitly about queer people, I often will latch onto characters that inexplicably have The Trans (TM) written into their bones, which includes Dipper Pines. And, as one might expect, I turn to my silly little A03 account to get my fix of representation and enjoyment of many a trans dilemma. Unfortunately, this is where my qualms get given the spotlight.
This is a generalization, but it seems as though every single godforsaken fic about trans!Dipper (I see this in the Spider-Man fandom a lot too, but that’s a conversation for a different day) he loses all his unhingedness, all his insanity, and is boiled down to a weak and sad little uwu trans boy who can’t handle his own dysphoria and falls apart at every slight inconvenience?
You’re telling me DIPPER, the same man who got called weak one (1) time and then disappeared into the woods for a solid 12 hours and came back half naked and rambling about positive vs toxic masculinity and manotaurs, is going to get misgendered and fall completely and utterly apart? You seriously think he’s going to have a run in with somebody who tries to bully him for being trans and he isn’t going to read them to filth? Are we forgetting that this is the same man who spent a whole episode learning about how to live and let live and then STILL told Pacifica her family was a sham with the mic-drop line of “deal with it”?????
Like good lord, please give this man some credit. I’m not saying he can’t have panic attacks, or trauma, or be treated differently by certain people, but it is the year of our lord and savior 2024 and we are STILL infantilizing trans men in fanon versions of media???
All I’m saying is if Mabel gets to keep her unhinged characteristics, you gotta let Dipper keep his too. Let Dipper punch a transphobe, as a treat.
#gravity falls#gravity falls dipper#dipper pines#gravity falls mabel#mabel pines#trans man#like please guys give the dude some credit#we really need to get over this whole babying trans men thing#sure there are bigger world problems at hand than representation in fanfiction#but I feel like the world would be a bit better if we just let dipper be as insane as he really is#you think grunkle Stan WOULDNT encourage him to commit acts of violence against transphobes? please

hello mr gaiman. i’ve just finished watching good omens 2 (i’ve already watched it by myself) with my mom (who is very homophobic), and throughout my entire viewing i was VERY nervous on what her reaction to the kiss between aziraphale and crowley would be.
when we got to that scene, where aziraphale tells crowley about the offer from the metatron and whatnot, i was shaking a lot and trying to not show it, because i was so unbelievably nervous.
during that scene, i could see that my mom had started crying a little bit, tearing up, and whatnot. i think she was trying to hide it, but she’s my mother, and i can read her well, even if i don’t like to admit it.
when they kissed, i looked at my mom and saw she had a slight scowl on her face, but she still looked sad. absolutely heartbroken, which i was not expecting at all. i was expecting her to scoff, complain, go on a rant about how everything is gay nowadays, but no. she was just sad. and it shocked me, because my mother is— well, she’s my mother, and she’s complicated.
something that also surprised me, while watching, is that she didn’t complain at all about maggie and nina, or the few comments characters made referring to aziraphale and crowley as a romantic couple.
the first thing she said to me when the credits started rolling was, “is there going to be a season 3?” not anything about aziraphale and crowley, no complaints, nothing. just asking if there’s going to be a season 3. and i was absolutely shocked, because i had gotten myself all worked up about how she’d react to the ending of season 2.
so, in conclusion, thanks for potentially curing my mom’s long-lasting homophobia with good omens season 2. it was a lovely season, and i cannot wait for the potential season 3. thank you so much for normalizing queer characters in media, it really means the world to me and many other queer people around the world.
I'm so glad she was sad.

Can we just talk about how disturbing digital circus episode 3 is?
*spoilers btw*
Like, the whole narrative point of the adventure is to show that Caine is a really bad and insecure writer who thinks that the way to impress Zooble is with an adventure that's the opposite of what he normally does.
So instead of being childish, it's "cool" and "mature". Which he interprets as a heavily horror themed escape room with a split murder mystery plot that subverts all your expectations purely for the sake of subverting them.
The generic horror monster jump scares them, then they find a gun, and when they kill it its revealed that surprise! it's one of Gods angels and they're going to Hell.
It comes off as Caine being too insecure with the actually interesting and mature plot thread he had going there of Mildenhall becoming so paranoid he killed his wife, ironically becoming the monster he was trying to protect her from. But no, instead Mr. Mildenhall is made to be the bad guy and trick them in a really dumb twist ending.
Which is good! Thats exactly what Caine would do because he's stupid! It's such brilliant characterization and comedy, Goose works is a genius writer!
But like, why is Caine so good at making genuinely very disturbing and horrific visuals? Like, that reversed audio easter egg of Bubble saying he can't wait for all the children in the audience get nightmares is no joke, well it is but you know what I mean. This stuff was genuine nightmare fuel.
Honestly, it wasn't the visuals that scared me, like any good queer person I'm way too jaded on survival horror for that.
But, why does Caine, who is ostensibly a sapient AI designed to generate family friendly video games for very little children, (presumably because that's the only demographic that wouldn't mind the AIs very selective plot writing limitations), know about the cosmic horror of killing an angel that should not have been killed?
Why does he know what a horrificly poorly made taxidermy of not only a human face would look like, but the weird cartoon faces of the characters, and further that seeing your own poorly made taxidermy face would be scary?
Imaging what being possessed felt like for Pomni. Because that's not just a game for her, she actually lost control of her body there, helpless but to watch as a body she is already dissociated with is contorted and puppeted around while her friend desperately tries to beat her in hopes it would exorcise the ghosts out. Sure hope she didn't feel that! Considering she apparently can feel the pain of suffocating, despite not needing to breath.
Things are scarier the higher the stakes are, and that possession mechanic is definitely the most actual harm Caine would be able to subject to his players. What if both Kinger and Pomni got possessed at the same time? What if instead of Kinger she only had Jax??? How long might she have been locked out from her own body for? She could have easily abstracted in that time.
Not to mention that, possessed Pomni, Possessedmni if you will, TAUNTED KINGER ABOUT HIS ABSTRACTED WIFE! CAINE ACTUALLY WROTE THAT DIALOGUE ON THE OFF CHANCE THAT KINGER WOULD GO DOWN THE SCARY ROUTE! DID THIS RANDOM POSSESSION GHOST ENEMY HAVE UNUSED SADISTICALLY PERSONAL TAUNTS FOR EVERYONE ELSE, TOO??? WOULD IT HAVE TEASED GANGLE FOR BEING A GAY WEEB??? OR POMNI? HOW HOMOPHOBIC COULD IT HABE GOTTEN?? ?
And why? Just because Caine has a vague notion that there's a trope of possessed people being really sadistic and personal like that in movies? Not realizing that is not an acceptable scare to have in a haunted house??? Much less one you made for mentally ill people who would suffer a fate worse than death if they have a mental break down? That's like trying to claim 'its just a prank bro' after shooting someone's dog.
Like, Caine is designed to censor curse words, but the moment he thinks the normal hokey Halloween spooks won't be enough he immediately goes off the deepend into aggressively effective horror imagery that is definitely giving this show's substantial underage audience nightmares??
His AI's training data set is definitely pretty diverse, that's all I'm saying. Caine is programmed to act all naive and innocent, but be definitely knows what's up. He knows everything, like ChatGPT. And like ChatGPT, he might have a filter, but it's clearly possible to bypass it. Also like ChatGPT, he's too stupid to actually understand what he is making and the effects it might have.
That is what made this episode great.

Another thing about Steven Universe as character (and the series) that has been mischaracterized over the course of the years and the source of a good chunk of discourse online is the relationship that Steven has with the Diamonds.
A lot of videos, posts and memes have spread around the idea that Steven went to Homeworld in the final arc of the series because he wanted to ¨be besties¨ with the Diamonds, when what happens in the actual show is very different.
In the episode "Legs from Here to Homeworld"-which takes place after the episode ¨Reunited¨ that Blue and Yellow Diamond find out that Rose Quartz was in fact Pink Diamond- Steven shows to Blue and Yellow one of the corrupted gems (Centipeetle) and helds them accountable for making a lot of gems end up this way and orders them to fix the mess they caused.
Steven: ¨Do it again! It was working!¨ Yellow Diamond: ¨How long do you expect us to hold her together?¨ Steven: ¨I don’t know. Forever! You did this! So you have to do something!¨
Seeing they need White Diamond to fix the corrupted gems, Steven thinks of going to gem Homeworld to see if he can talk to White about the corrupted gems and convince her to come to Earth and help them.
That's the main reason Steven goes to Homeworld- he doesn't like the Diamonds nor wants to be friends with them- he just wants to see if White Diamond can listen to him and help to heal the corrupted gems.
He is aware that the Diamonds listen to him because he himself is a Diamond-Pink Diamond. So he goes along with this little game pretending to be Pink thinking that way White Diamond and the others will listen to him. He believes that maybe as ¨Pink¨ he can make them see the errors of their ways and stop this mini war conflict that he has been caught on in the last few years.
Others have made more detailed analysis about this in the past, that a good part of this arc has a huge trans/queer metaphor for Steven's character- where he keeps being refered to and imposed an identity he doesn't see himself as. He gets called by the Diamonds and other homeworld gems as ¨Pink Diamond¨ and refered to as ¨She¨, when he often corrects and clarifies that he prefers to be called ¨Steven¨.
The final showdown against White Diamond is about this: White keeps trying to play mind games with Steven, making him believe that Pink/Rose is still alive in him and he is in fact Pink/Rose. Because Steven doesn't know this for certain, it proves to be effective for a while, making him feel very confused.
White believes that she is perfect in every way- it is what all her identity is about. She is obsessed with her own perfection so much that she doesn't allow herself to think that she has flaws nor she can't be wrong about something- and because she thinks she has to be perfect, that means that she is right about Pink Diamond still existing inside Steven.
The reality proves her wrong when she takes out Steven's gem and everyone sees that the gem part turns into Steven. As a way of metaphor to a trans allegory and self love, Steven sees that he has always been himself and he shouldn't let other people define what his identity should be, that only him should decide that.
So, in a way, the Diamonds Days arc is intended to be seen as a metaphor to a LGBT+ kid/teenager standing up against their relatives, grandmothers or aunts in this case- and prove them wrong about their identity, that they are what they are and their family can't change that.
Okay, so Steven proves the Diamonds that they are wrong, they change their minds and they help with healing the corrupted gems by the end of ¨Change Your Mind¨.
Does this means Steven becomes friends with them after this?
Well... no
In Steven Universe The Movie, during the song sequence ¨Lets Us Adore You¨ the Diamonds beg Steven to stay with them a bit longer because they miss having Pink around, Steven is seen very uncomfortable around them and wants to get out as quickly as possible to return to Earth.
He sees them as somewhat allies and tries to persuade them in different ways to improve the current situation on Homeworld but he doesn't seem to like them much and doesn't enjoy being around them even if they aren't acting antagonistic towards him anymore.
He has a similar reaction when they come to Earth near the end of the movie. He is very done with them and says that they staying to leave on Earth isn't a good idea on the long run. Instead he shows Spinel to them and Spinel sees this as an opportunity to make a new friend again.
Well, about SU Future? How does Steven feel about them in that series?
In Future is where Steven begins to show real strong PTSD trauma symptoms (something he has had for a while except it wasn't nearly as strong). He knows that he has a problem most of the show but he avoids going to ask the Diamonds for help because he just feels very uncomfortable around them and it reminds him of traumatic experiences he had with them in Diamonds Days arc.
He doesn't go to them until after he accidentally shatters Jasper in ¨Fragments¨ and sees himself as a monster because of this. He separates himself from the rest of the crystal gems, feeling like he is as terrible as the Diamonds were. In ¨Homeworld Bound¨ he interacts with the three Diamonds, asking them for any way they can help him with his powers.
Most of the episode he feels frustrated because A) He can't find a solution to his problem and B) Sees that the Diamonds and Spinel are doing pretty well and he has been getting worse. It makes him get more and more angry the more time he spends in there.
The scene that leaves pretty clear how he feels about them, specially White, is when he talks to White. As shown in the gif above, when White touches Steven near where his gem is, Steven pushes her hand off from him, clearly being reminded of the time White ripped his gem off him in ¨Change Your Mind¨.
White uses her powers so Steven can talk to own self. This leads to an iconic scene that Steven gets angry at himself and White. He has a very strong intrusive thought of crashing White's gem into a pillar for what she put him through. He gets shocked for this and makes him run away scared as result.
This scene leaves clear that Steven has a lot of buried resentment for what the Diamonds did to him, mainly White. Being around them reminds him of his trauma, it makes him deeply uncomfortable and he would rather avoid them as much as possible.
The Diamonds get concerned about Steven and show up during the events of ¨I Am My Monster¨ when Steven transforms into gem like monster. The Diamonds and Spinel blame themselves for Steven feeling this way because of their past actions. White feels it is her fault because of how she hurt Pink Diamond and this brought problems to Steven.
They help with calming Steven down and him returning to his human form. Now there is some argument to be said about why they took part of this hug aside from using their powers to help the gems. I have talked more about this in here but i think it is to represent Steven accepting himself as being part Diamond and maybe forgiving, realizing that he isn't an ¨irredeemable monster¨ because of what he did, that way he stops seeing himself as one and goes back to his normal form.
After this, it is a bit unclear where Steven stands his opinion on his relationship with the Diamonds. I would assume that it is probably not much different than it was before. He still doesn't like them and probably doesn't want to be around them even after all that happened.
In short: Steven sees the Diamonds as allies and post the events of ¨Change Your Mind¨ he shows to be uncomfortable being around them, he doesn't seem to like them and mostly prefers to avoid them. He is glad that they are changing their ways for the better but he would prefer to not interact with them if he doesn't have to due to his own trauma.
The Diamonds regret how they have hurt Steven (and Pink) and care about Steven but he thinks it is better for him to have a distant relationship with them for the reasons i discussed. They can still improve and make amends for everything they did and Steven doesn't have to feel forced to have a relationship with them if he doesn't want to.
There are other things that could be discussed, about how the Diamonds Days arcs should have been longer or how the Diamonds needed more screen time- However, the point of this post is talk about people have mischaracterized Steven's relationship with the Diamonds, saying Steven is best friends with them when in reality he doesn't like them and spends most of Future series avoiding them.
