1) make a primary essay plan. you NEED to know what you’ll write about before you even look at the literature, so if you need to go over class notes or read an introductionary textbook piece you do that. this includes spending time finding alternative keywords you can later search from (is a term not standardised? do different schools of thought use different terms for the same phenomena? find them!)

2) spend 1-2 weeks before your 2 days of essay writing reading books and essays, but importantly, ONLY on topics and points you’ve planned for in your essay plan. you should skim book chapters and even journal articles until you find the key terms you looked up before, and only then do you start reading in depth. make sure you take notes (i tend to stick to direct quotes) with FULL REFERENCE at the top. i do it in bulletpoint style with the full reference at the top and then at the end of the quote put (author date:page) because we will be copy-pasting the quotes into our essay plan later and we dont want to mix the sources up

(i dont clean up my references until the essay is completely done. idk why its jhust how i do it. thats why this isnt in a specific reference style yet, just making sure i have all the info i need)

3) go back to your essay plan and copy paste from the 10-odd most important sources you have (but read and make notes on far more, and make judgements on what truly is relevant to your essay), making sure to start laying out key arguments as you do. i will often copy a direct quote from a source and, if i understand it without explanation, i will just write my own thoughts underneath. i sometimes colour-code the sources too to make sure i’m not consistently just quoting one author or one piece or work. the essay plan should have a total word count of about 60% of your finished essay’s word count

4) sit with another document open and just rewrite the thoughts and arguments you’ve already put the hard brain planning power through into a coherent form. make sure you don’t copy your sources directly, but draw on them to write your original arguments. the benefit of having the quote right there means that if you feel like you want to include direct quotes to strengthen your argument, you don’t need to go back into your 15+ page document of notes to find it. it’s right there! this takes a few hours with minimal brain power and minimal stress

5) because the first draft is still bad (but not nearly as bad as if you had not done such an extended essay plan) rewrite it once more the day after in yet another document to make sure you sound smarter than you are. this takes even shorter than the first writing, and only requires about the same amount of brain power.

My worst teacher ever!

Okay so I've had so many fucked up teachers (-_-) I lived in a rural area, so far off the beaten track, that if someone screwed up badly(but not enough to be fired) they got sent there, so we had a lot of jilted and surly twats, we also had a lot of teachers new fresh out of university and a few close to retiring or with disabilities but still wanting to teach, those ones were generally nice and pretty cool. Generally the rules were a bit more lax for the teachers since they had already messed up but were being given a second chance, and that lead to some great(but strict) teachers, since they were there as a punishment and they wanted to get out of there and back into their old jobs asap,(we had a lot of teacher turnover) but there was also a lot of shenanigans; teachers busted by students having sex in classrooms, teachers thieving, taking drugs, openly perving on highschool girls, etc...

But despite all of that in my whole school career(primary and secondary) there was only One instance where a teacher at our school actually got fired although they called it "Permanent Leave"... we did have a couple who had mental breakdowns and quit.. but thats different...

Anyway it was in my 10th year of school, he was an English teacher and he was one of those older middle age crisis types (cheesy gangsta wannabe, band t-shirts, shorts hanging low, baseball cap backwards, cheap rapper bling and he was obsessed with ponchos). He tried so hard to seem cool and hip.. but he was just so creepy.

And he barely lasted a year.

He was openly bias and judgemental in class, favoring the academically inclined/more wealthy kids and snubbing the kids who weren't at the top of the class/less wealthy(going so far as to kick them out of class. Then he'd do a complete 180 outside of class and try to be all best friends buddy buddy with everyone like he thought he was the most favourite teacher in the school. He really wasn't. (¤_¤)

I was one of his favorites (unfortunately..) I think its because I had a lot of smart/wealthier friends and he though I was really "smart". I was on the higher end of poor and yes I was kinda smart but I hung out and got along with a lot of people, it was a really small town and everyone knew each other since preschool so we all got along for the most part and we all hung out often.

I was also one of those quiet artsy types, I doodled in my note books to help remember the content of the lesson.. He latched onto that like a maggot on rancid meat. He would go through my school bag pulling out my art books and rummaging through my stuff! And would give me Word Art to colour in and draw on as homework! Hell I remember one incident where I threw my phone at him to get my art books off of him.. that he had grabbed from my bag during someone else's class!(we left them in a seperate area to the classroom)

Who the fuck does that!?

I had to get a fucking padlock for my school bag!

And the really sad(annoying) thing is, I actually enjoyed English class before he showed his nasty face. That year we were meant to be studying Shakespeare and Chaucer and all of the old English books which I've been reading since I was little and it was my year to shine! But he made me feel like a fucking toddler with his "colour in the pretty picture" (○u○)

That his classes generally consisted of watching movies/music videos and slacking off(not so great since we had really big important tests at the end of the year that decided our futures...) and him having hissyfits if anyone objected.. I spent half the time skipping his class and hiding out in the library.

Really didn't help that he had a real short fuse, trowing tantrums and screaming at anyone who questioned him..

I remember one big incident towards the end of year, I dont know what caused it since I wasn't part of the class, but I saw the ass end of it as I was walking past on my way to the library. He was having a massive tantrum screaming his head off, purple faced and throwing anything he could get his hands on. Including a chair that hit one of my bffs and knocking her down in the middle of class, seeing this I knock on the door, giving the excuse that bffs mum wanted her and was waiting at the main office(our parents were really close so one of us delivering messages like that was normal) I got her out of there and took her to the nurses office because the chair had cut her arm and reported what was happening to the main office(he didn't get the sack for that, but it definitely added fuel to the fire) when bffs mum was called in to pick up bff she stormed right over to the fucktard and tore him a new one(shes short but holy crap she's fucking scary) he steered clear of bff and her family(me included as extended family) after that.

So many kids were reporting him and trying to get him gone, but things really came to a head at the end of the year after the results for the HSC* came back. Thanks to Him everyone in his class failed the HSC, including graduate aged students who needed the HSC to get into university. Since about 2/3rd of the school failed the HSC the Board of Education sent someone to investigate what had happened.

It was a really big deal, kids were called in to be interviewed (those in his classes and some outside for confirmation) All of us were given an intensive 2 week course by another teacher and a second chance to sit our HSC (a very big deal! board of education never allows do-overs!), but in the end many of us barely scraped a pass and its affected our chances of getting into university and future career paths. Several in my year dropped out and others moved schools.

Thankfully it was the final nail in his coffin and he was gone for good, I moved after that year(for unrelated reasons) so I dont know how things went in the next years aftermath, but I hope the kids in the years to come never have to deal with something like that happening to them!

*Quick explanation of what the HSC is...HSC stands for High School Certificate. In the last 3 years of high school students take 3 HSC tests(that we call the HSCs) to prove we are ready to move onto the next year of study. There are 3 tests in the HSCs the students must pass to achieve the minimum standard and recieve our HSC– reading, writing and numeracy.

Each years HSC qualifies students for new opportunities:

Recieving the Year10 high school certificate means that you can go onto years 11 and 12 or drop out and go to TAFE(aka community college).

Recieving 11 & 12 qualifies for University entry although the qualifying courses change depending on how high you score in those tests.

So years 10, 11 and 12 are really full of studying and prep for those tests because they are so important to our futures.

My Trans Story

Story of my social and medical transition under the cut, I know its not trans day of visibility anymore but consider this a belated contribution. I hope it helps anyone who’s questioning, or even anyone whos curious about the experience. This is very long and has some mention of dysphoria, abuse, bullying but also has a happy ending so thats your warning:

The earliest I remember giving any indication of being trans was at five or six years old on my way to primary school with my mother (who I will mention was a fairly good mother at the time - this will be relevant later). I turned to her in my little green and white uniform dress and said “I’m a boy, aren’t I mum?” I’m not sure what prompted the question really curiosity maybe but my mother laughed it off - something I dont blame her for, kids say silly things all the time. I wouldn’t say I was a super boyish kid. Yeah I liked a bit of rough and tumble play, I was into pokemon cards, then yu-gi-oh, beyblades - which were all considered “boy” things when I was at school. I liked to play british bulldog and tag, and as I got older I’d get into Warhammer, Dungeons and Dragons, The elder scrolls and other nerdy things which are seen as more unisex now but again in the time were considered “boy” interests. But I liked having long blond hair, and I was curious about make-up. I liked to bake and sew and weave, and as a child I even enjoyed knitting. I cried easily and got hurt often - I was accused of attention seeking through most of my childhood though even looking at myself critically I can only ever remember wanting validation. When I was hurt, when I’d achieved something I was proud of - my motivations were called into question when I sought out help or interest. I remember being heartbroken when art I’d worked on was dismissed or I was told the bad bruise I’d gotten was nothing to be upset over and to stop seeking attention. It set me on a path of questioning everything I did and why I did it.

Unfortunately I have a lot of memory gaps in the lead up to high school and through much of school.

Fairly early on in school though I came out as bisexual. Honestly I think a part of me was threatened by cis guys masculinity and that drove me to women. I had a fairly even number of girlfriends and boyfriends. One relationship the boy I was with implied being ready to try sex and we ended up breaking up not long after when I distanced myself. I didn’t know how to explain the discomfort with my own body that I didnt even understand. How I didn’t want to be touched in certain places or do certain things. I felt like a freak.

It didn’t help that I was already bullied pretty much from the get go in highschool, from age 11 I did have many friends and there were periods where I had none. I was bullied for my hair, for not having friends, for being gay, for being depressed. Hell sometimes I was bullied for being bullied - high school is weird.

I was also... “bullied” by a “friend” who would hit me, talk down to me, at times wouldn’t let me sit on furniture. Once she choked me to the point of passing out among other things. Somehow I was still convinced she must like me on some level - why else would she hang out with me? I wish I’d known better. She introduced me to the concept of being transgender but not in a way I identified with. She told me about a documentary of “Boy becoming girls and girls becoming boys.” she told me “The girls that become boys are always still pretty, you can tell they were girls. But the boys that become girls, you cant tell they were boys they just look like ugly girls.” I imagine shes less ignorant now but its stuck with me.

Eventually around age 16 Two trans people spoke at my school. They talked about how they always felt different, things they’d disliked about themselves - the relief of coming out. I understood completely but my brief excitement was dashed by their talking about harassment and fear. I wrote my email address on a slip of paper and ‘please help’ which I put in the box they were collecting at the back of the room for any questioning youth. They never emailed me. I made an appointment with my doctor.

I actually begged my doctor to fix me, and he referred me to a GIC (Gender Identity Clinic) in Edinburgh. It took a full year to actually be seen there. I told some of my close friends about my concerns and confusion, and came out as genderfluid. I used a random R based male name to try and settle - knowing that as it was fandom related I’d change it later. When I spoke to the specialist at the GIC, I came out as a Trans Man, I felt validated. I came out to my family not long after and it was not well received. My cousin (who had spent every summer with us for as long as I could remember and I viewed like a sibling) died when I was 14. My godmother (his mother) died a year after. Within the ten years since my cousins death, he, my uncle on my mothers side, my great grandfather, my godmother, my gran and my grandad have all passed away. When I came out to my dad he begged me not to put more strain on our family. My mother turned to drink when I was only 14 and had worsened becoming more and more abusive as time went on. I’d had mental and physical health issues since the age of 8 and my experiences were being written off. My mother got worse, and I ended up being her full time carer for a few years. She was abusive, she hit me, she destroyed my things, she wrote on the walls and threatened me with knives. When a letter for my third GIC appointment came, (the appointment that would have gotten me hormones) I highly suspect it was my mother that destroyed it. I didn’t even know I’d been dropped from the list until six months later when I called to ask when my next appointment would be. I’d apparently missed it and for that reason they’d silently, without fuss, taken me off their active patients list. I was upset but handling my mother was enough strain for me not to fight my case for another few years. I went to attempt college for a second time in 2015 - nearly six years after I first came out, and four after my first GIC appointment. I called my best friend over to my house, and together we sighed 15 deedpolls changing my name and title legally. I contacted the clinic and got another appointment for that September. The doctor wanted longer - more appointments to get to know me, but after hearing I’d already had two with another doctor, had waited four years, had told the story I’ve told you now - she told me she wanted to get me on hormones for christmas. She rearranged her schedule and had me come in on december 9th, four days later I had my first doze of testosterone. I didn’t tell my father that I’d started hormones but I had told him prior that I was going to soon. My dad continued not to accept me, as did one of my tutors at college. I kept my head down and muscled through. I’d become so used to not passing that only 4 years later, when Im passing easily and consistently, its both a shock and yet somehow feels like its always been the case. I had top surgery on October 23rd 2017. To my surprise, my father came to the hospital. He’d said he wouldnt visit, but made the 4 hour drive anyway. Last summer, he started introducing my as his son to strangers. He started inviting me out for drinks with him and my brother. He treated me how I had always wanted. Sure he still drops the feminine endearments in - but I’m not going to fault him that. Everyone I meet assumes Im cis until I tell them otherwise. I was finally comfortable enough in 2017 to come out as gay, and I’m now engaged to my wonderful Fiance who is just beginning his own transition journey. My point? It gets better is a tired phrase that feels worn out by use. And no my life isn’t perfect but dysphoria and lack of love is definitely not the problem. Years ago I felt I’d never pass, I told people as much. I thought I was ugly, and unlovable. Now I like how I look, I Know i pass because people call me “sir” “Mr” ect. One of the tutors for the university I applied to was excited to “finally have a man in the class.”

The journey is long, and at no point can you see the end of it. Eventually you just look back and see how far you’ve come. Stay strong.��

Originally from Preston, Founder and designer Jacob graduated from Manchester School of Art earlier this year with a first class honours degree in Fashion Design. There he gained knowledge in manual pattern cutting, block development and industrial production which were vital elements to setting up his own brand. Prior to this Jacob had studied a foundation diploma in art and design and had a keen interest in styling and fashion journals. During his time at Manchester School of Art, Jacob temporarily moved to London to spend two seasons interning with Christopher Shannon, this experience finalised his decision to set up his own brand producing urban and unique men’s wear. Jacob Kane collections are heavily research led, this is shown by mood boards of various inspirations on the brands Instagram page. Jacob says “"I systematically take pictures on my phone as soon as something catches my attention and I then collages and I think about how I could apply it on a basic garment.”(Jacob Kane 2017) The brands identity is simple and minimalist yet bold and eye catching. The collections often feature bold primary colours with neutral earthy tones to create “The complete Jacob Kane experience”. (Jacob Kane 2016)

The latest collection ‘Unite or Perish’ features oversized streetwear, layering, printed t shirts and patch work style denims. It includes a strong colour pallet of blacks whites and reds. Its inspiration comes from the political state of Britain during Brexit and the lack of unity amongst youth as well as being heavily influenced by Jacob’s own taste and style, he says “The result is a collection that is a comment on my interests and inspirations, as well as a statement about where I think we stand as the youth of today.” (JacobKane.co.uk 2017) As well as being influenced by politics, the pockets and straps on some of the garments have been specifically measured and made for the items young people may carry, for example a wallet, a pack of cigarettes, lighter and phone. Jacob intended for this to look like the garment had been transformed into a survival kit.

The photo shoot for Unite or Perish is displayed on the Jacob Kane website. It is set in a car garage with bare brick wall backdrops and a red Ferrari car cover that compliments the clothing perfectly. The use of a film camera typed filter and red lighting gives it an urban and modern effect.

Prior to creating the first official collection Unite or Perish, Jacob Kane produced 3 collections which are also displayed on the brand website. The first being a Realisation project called ‘A Girl is a Gun’ which features bold black line prints, industrial straps and bright pink fleece and fur, this collection was inspired by female nudity. After this came ‘Keep it moving’ which included patch work denim, big rivets and laced up rope. The most recent design work was a Motion project, where the first idea of compartment pockets were from, this idea was later expanded in Unite or Perish. (JacobKane.co.uk)

Jacob describes his target audience as a ‘tribe’ that aim to define the term modern, they are young and creative and would be found “shopping in the back streets of Harajuku or at the opening of a new gallery in Antwerp.” He says “The Jacob Kane made and crafted tribe are a curious bunch. The modern youth personified, they do as they like and like what they do”. (Jacob Kane 2016)

The brand take pride in using the best quality fabrics sourced from London, Italy and Portugal. All Products are produced and quality checked in the brands studios in Manchester. As the founder and designer, Jacob oversees and controls every aspect of the company from designing to accounting and purchases. He says “A lot of creatives underestimate the little time you'll spend with their product. If you start alone, like me, you will spend most of your time sending emails, talking with your suppliers, photographers, etc. You really have to be prepared for that."(Jacob Kane 2017)

The Jacob Kane website is minimal black and white and features many captivating shoot photos from different collections. The online store offers various items that fit perfectly together with bold primary colours and oversized fit. There are printed logo t shirts and caps, detailed panelled hoodies with draw string and D ring zip features and variety of panelled denim jeans and jackets.

Although the brand itself is still in its early stages, Jacob Kane has gained a couple of accounts of good publicity. A major breakthrough moment for the brand was when HighSnobiety.com (an online publication, with over 1.5 million Instagram followers, that covers trends and news in fashion, music, art and culture) shortlisted Jacob Kane as one of their ‘9 upcoming brands to check out this month’. Jacob Kane was amongst brands such as Official Fake from Japan and the Swedish brand ADNYM ATELIER. This was published in early august of this year and discusses the successes of the brand so far, it says, “The result is distinctly wearable staples exacted with decadent details — whether it’s a wide cut or statement zipper.”(Highsnobiety.com 2017) The article also has a summary of the key pieces of the first collection, here it mentions the signature oversized patch work denim jacket and overblown striped shirt. The most recent account of publicity was an interview with Konbini, a multi format worldwide media company specializing in all things pop culture. The media company (who have over 3 million followers on Facebook) interviewed Jacob prior to his first collection release and asked how it felt being a new designer in the industry. He tells them that he intends to be the only distributor of his products to start with, as he wants the brand to grow slowly and organically. (Konbini.com July 2017)

However after producing a strong first collection as a brand, Jacob Kane found its first stockists in Sydney, Australia. The store Subtype stocks sneaker and contemporary brands such as Nike, Filling Pieces, Adidas and Common Projects, their websites states “We at SUBTYPE are constantly Inspired by the individual way our customers and friends dress. SUBTYPE strives to bring you a mix of brands and limited releases that are not offered elsewhere in Australia.(subtype.com July 2017)

For most brands, social media has become the best form of advertisement and promotion, this is the same for Jacob Kane, with a growing following of 10.9 thousand on Instagram, it is vital that as a brand they stay active, they do this by constantly sharing mood boards, colour pallets, design ideas, toiles and finally the finished garments and campaign shoots. Jacob Kane have recently held a competition to win a logo T shirt from the Unite or perish collection on Instagram, all the followers had to do was share the post onto their profiles to be entered. This welcomed many other social media users to check out the brand and proved a successful way to promote themselves as well as gaining potential customers.

There are many other brands that have presented similar designs this Autumn/Winter, including Christopher Shannon who has produced a collection with consistent use of patch work and panels, Oamc have also produced over sized jackets and coats in dark fabrics, similar to Jacob Kane, as well as Dior creating oversized coats in red and black.

Personally, I really like the style in which Jacob thinks and the designs he has produced so far. I particularly like the fluid use of oversizing and patch work. I feel as a brand it sits in the affordable luxury brand category, the prices range from £45 to £365. I would say this is reasonable pricing for a small brand because it is all made and designed with such detail and precision, products aren’t yet being produced in a mass scale and are limited and rare, however if the brand begins to grow and starts producing in a factory scale, the pricing may decrease. I think Jacob Kane is currently a niche brand, the garments are made to appeal to a small percentage of buyers, the consumers aren’t afraid to be bold and wear eye catching statement clothing. The clothes produced aren’t something you would find in high street stores like Top Man, River Island and Zara.

Investing in GoodBusiness

How to join the network

Since 2001, impact VC firms have raised $13 billion to invest in companies that provide a social or environmental benefit as part of running their for-large-profit business. Indeed, $10 billion of that has been raised since 2010 alone. Impact VCs are VCs first that intend to generate market-beating financial returns because of, not in spite of, an impact-oriented investment thesis.

To date, these impact VC funds have yet to be categorized as a venture trend. Too often they are mistakenly lumped in the general impact investing category, a very broad space of investors from foundations to private equity to wealth management that seek social or environmental impact, but for near-market, sub-market or even net-zero financial returns. Impact VCs focus on early-stage and mid-stage private businesses and most have institutional LPs that are expecting 3x or higher returns on their investments.

Similarly, the for-large-profit businesses in which they invest, which have been identified as a trend, do not have a consistent moniker that encompasses the whole sector. In the last 30 years, these companies have been called double-bottom line, triple-bottom line, ESG, social enterprise, benefit corporations, B Corps, profit-from-purpose and more, which are all relevant, but dont cover the whole category.

Of those, I prefer profit-from-purpose, as it makes clear there is a higher purpose to the company, but profit always comes first. However, if I could wave my wand and assign the sector a catch-name akin to fintech and SaaS, I would assign the name GoodBusiness to the sector of for-large-profit businesses that also provide a social or environmental benefit.

15 years of impact VC fundraises

Ive prepared what I believe is the first comparison of all impact VC funds. It includes data on fund size, fund count and age, GPs, LPs, relevant investments and exits and the firms mission statements. I include only funds investing in startups (seed to late-stage) for top-quartile returns that explicitly state their profit-from-purpose investing strategy and have a portfolio that is at least 50 percent invested in GoodBusiness.

Impact venture capital will not be overlooked or misunderstood for long.

While many traditional funds invest in businesses with social or environmental missions, if backing GoodBusiness companies is not their primary mission, I did not include them. Likewise, I did not include family funds, even those dedicated to impact, if it was not possible to extract what percent of the fund is dedicated to direct startup investments.

Impact venture capital will not be overlooked or misunderstood for long. DBL Partners (as in double-bottom line) created one of the earliest traditional impact VC funds in 2004, and has had big exits in Tesla, SolarCity, eMeter and OPX Bio, among others. Other investors have had healthy exits with 7th Generation, FLS Energy, Nest Labs, SolarBridge, 2U, Chariot, SKS Microfinance, Ujjivan Financial Services and more. This investment sector is also growing quickly; $3 billion in new funds (TPG Rise and Breakthrough Energy) were announced recently.

Broad-focus impact VC funds

Jeffrey Skolls six-year-old Capricorn Investment Groupis currently the sector behemoth, with more than $5 billion raised in 24 funds. Al Gore and David Bloods roughly $2 billion Generation Investment Management fund is very active in later-stage deals as part of their $12 billion private equity fund. Both are very broadly invested and have had some notable exits. Capricorn, notably, is a certified B Corp itself, making it, I believe, the financially largest B Corp in the world.

The sector started taking form, however, with the launch of a number of traditional VC-style firms whose total fund raises range between $100 and $900 million. Elevar Equity, LeapFrog Investments, Collaborative Fund, Obvious Venturesand Renewal Funds all invest broadly in GoodBusiness.

These funds invest from seed to late stage, and are standing in to back businesses much earlier in their trajectories than Capricorn or Generation. We should expect more fundraises and aggressive investing from this group, though some are still waiting on their first GoodBusiness exits. In the sub-$100 million category,City Light Capital, Vast Ventures, Better Ventures, Radicle Impactand Pi Investments (part of a family fund) also are making broad sector investments.

Founder/LP funds

The hardest impact VC to pin down is where the founders are the sole LPs. They tend to be discreet about fund totals, are unrestricted in how they use their money and are unconcerned about future fundraisers.

Omidyar Networkis the oldest and most well-known. They allocate their funds for a spectrum of financial returns, ranging from commercial (VC returns) to sub-commercial (impact investing) to outright charitable donations. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will be doing the same, but is expected to eventually have $45 billion in funds, enough to possible transform entire ecosystems.

Millennial and modern shoppers have high expectations for the companies they patronize.

Laurene Powell Jobs new Emerson Collective hasnt exposed how theyll be using her $20 billion net worth (so theyre not included in my analysis), but have stated commitments to supporting entrepreneurs creating positive social change. Kapor Capital is a dedicated VC fund that works closely with their Kapor Center for Social Impact. Freada Kapor Klein is very clear about how they leverage the Kapor Center to guide the Kapor Capital investment team to determine which potential investments targeting Americas underrepresented STEM students and entrepreneurs will have the most commercial potential.

The enhanced VC opportunity for these funds is that if you can catalyze change on first-order problems using donation dollars, youre ideally positioned to reap financial returns by backing the entrepreneurs and businesses that will best serve newly opened marketplaces.

Impact VC sub-sectors

The largest industry sub-sector centers around protecting the earths environment. Reducing or reversing climate change, alternative energy and resources, improving water quality and access, decreasing waste and improving the food system are embraced by many funds. Breakthrough Energy, a new billion-dollar fund backed by a whos who of tech billionaires, is focused exclusively on alternative energy solutions. Another estimated $300+ million has been raised by Closed Loop Fund (recycling), Prelude Ventures (climate change), EFW Partners (energy, food, water) and Closed Loop Capital (food and agriculture).

Another $1.25 billion is dedicated for businesses serving the billion people forecast to enter the middle class in emerging markets this decade. LeapFrog Ventures, Elevar Equity, Gray Ghost Ventures and Khosla Impact are focused on large frontier markets opportunities. For two years I served as COO of Tala, a rapidly growing mobile-based financial service provider targeting the underserved in emerging markets. I experienced firsthand how fast a business can grow by smartly offering fair and convenient services to people who have been mistreated or ignored entirely by existing providers. This sector will achieve exceptional returns because of the combination of massive markets and a relative dearth of investment capital.

Theres also a growing sub-sector of businesses providing high-value products in Western economies. These funds are confident that millennial and modern shoppers have high expectations for the companies they patronize. They want to know management is ethical, employees are treated well, supply chains are clean of exploitation and that the environment is respected in the creation of their product.

Patagonia, 7th Generation, Ben & Jerrys and Dansko are all showing, it pays to be a B Corp. Both TOMS Social Entrepreneurship Fund and Patagonias Tin Shed Ventures have grown out of ethically minded B Corps and invest in early- and mid-stage GoodBusiness consumer-focused startups. Core Innovation Capital is focused on providing fair and trustworthy financial services, a sector historically known for deceptive pricing, unethical management and bad customer service. Fledge is the first B Corp-oriented accelerator.

The newest and smallest sub-sector is focused on good governance and supporting unrepresented founders and entrepreneurs. Village Capital, Impact America Fundand Backstage Capital are all seeking out and supporting businesses that are often overlooked by traditional VC. From their perspective, their investing is the impact. They seek to jump-start new classes of business people that will transform society by opening new opportunities for more unrepresented business leaders in the years to come.

Whats next?

The concurrent global trends of handheld internet connectivity, digital money and wallets, socio-economic turmoil as we exit the Industrial Age, global climate change, rapid population growth, broadening financial inequality and the rise of the global middle class will continue to expose social and environmental problems and opportunities that will allow for different types of businesses than industrial capitalism created. Elon Musk is the most admired leader in technology. Unilever is rumored to become the worlds largest publicly traded B Corp. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative shows that investing LLCs, not charitable foundations, are how billionaires will give back.

Even Dick Cheney can see the relentless innovation in alternative energies is going to swamp carbon-based industrial in our lifetimes. And even a factory worker can see that robotics, automation and AI are going to decimate a once-reliable job sector, while climate change may affect many others.

Funds that back the alternative energy trends, alternatives to natural resource extraction and improved agriculture will all do well. Funds that back products and services for the large underserved classes will do well. Funds that focus on creating the job sectors of the future will do very well.

While I expect many of the above impact VC funds to expand and raise more funds, and I expect more funds to arrive globally, I expect dedicated sector expansion will slow in 10-15 years. The change will come when traditional VC funds expand their investment theses to include GoodBusiness, and raise funds and bring on partners to focus just on that.

While President Trumps buy-American, pro-fossil fuel, pro-heavy industry, anti-science and climate-denial platform will get the short-term attention, there is no stopping the global trends I listed above. Nows the time to invest in the long game.
