You Tried So Loud To Love Me

Prompt: Hanahaki Disease Relationships:  Jaskier/Valdo Marx Rating: T Content Warnings: Minor blood Summary: Jaskier absolutely could not stand Valdo Marx for even a second. He was pretentious, too pretty for his own good, and had a terrible habit of writing sonnets and songs about the color of Jaskier's eyes and the swoop of his hair that he was absolutely certain were some sort of masterfully crafted insult to his person and reputation.
Tucked under a cut again for Length, though this one is over just over 2k words.
Cross-posted to Ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/31171259
~
There were exactly three things in life that Jaskier was absolutely certain of. Things that he could continue to count on even when the rest of his life was attempting to fall to pieces around him.
That Belleteyn is the best holiday.
That Toussaint is Hot and Pretentious.
And that Valdo Marx is an asshole.
Even when his pockets were empty, his lute strings snapped, or he suddenly found himself caught up in a mild court scandal that he assuredly had no part in, he could always rely on those few things. It was easy to keep moving forward when one was propelled by Pettiness and Lust. Even if he could never give an exact answer as to why he hated Valdo so much when pressed. Really now, you wouldn’t ask why the grass was green or the sun warm, so why would anyone ask Jaskier why he couldn’t stand that fluffy little upstart?
It was assuredly not because the rival bard did indeed stand two inches taller than him and was criminally handsome. Nor was it because he had a perpetual perfect smile on his face that refused to budge even when Jaskier threw his best insults at him. And it most assuredly was not because the thrice-damned bastard had written not one but Two Sonnets entirely about Jaskier’s eyes and hair and he absolutely could read the undertones of mocking that clearly lay within. No, it was clearly none of those things that irked Jaskier to his very core.
What kept his petty hate-fueled animosity going was the absolutely nonsensical crush he had on the bastard. A crush he had worked hard to snuff out with wine, women, and a few other bards who weren’t nearly as annoying as Valdo. A crush that clearly had not gone away with time. A crush that was currently trying to hurtle it’s slimy little self all the way into actual, ugh… Love.
Which made it even more frustrating than usual that Valdo was suddenly not his normal bubbly self, greeting Jaskier warmly and loudly as he strode into their mutually favorite tavern in the middle of Oxenfurt. He looked tired, and quiet, and barely glanced at Jaskier before shifting his gaze back into the pint of ale in front of him. Not wine? By Melitele, what was wrong with him?
“Well, well, look who the alley cat dragged in. Ale will go straight to your gut, Valdo. I’ll steal back the title of prettiest bard before you know it.” He sniped as he leaned against the table’s edge and smiled with too many teeth.
Valdo cut his eyes up and then back down. “Good day, Jaskier.”
The smile dropped from Jaskier’s face and he narrowed his eyes. “Good day? That’s it? Valdo, are you ill? I did take the title back already, didn’t I? That must be it! I’ve never seen you like this. Ah, it must be such a burn to know you’ve finally been bested by a true bard and exposed for the talentless hack that you are.” As he spoke, he gestured grandly with his hands. Valdo only winced once at the mention of being ill and firmly kept his gaze on his mug.
“Everyone already knew you’re the attractive one between us, Jaskier. No need to rub it in.”
Jaskier ceased his obnoxious flailing and took an actual seat at the table with him. He crossed his arms on the table in front of him and leaned in, lowering his voice to avoid being overheard. “Okay now you’re actually worrying me. I was expecting snide sonnets on my unruly mop and ‘lustful gaze’. Jabs, put-downs...anything but this. You are actually sick, aren’t you?”
Valdo slammed back the rest of his ale and stood up abruptly. Jaskier’s mouth dropped open in shock as he was glared openly at by his once-rival turned unnatural crush. “Leave off, Jaskier. Go bother the brothel workers.” And with that final gritted out jab, he stomped out of the tavern.
Jaskier was still staring in shock at the empty spot before him when the barmaid strolled by.
“You’ll catch flies, you leave your mouth open like that, boy.”
He clicked his mouth shut and quickly made his own way out and back to his lodgings.
This just wouldn’t do. What was Valdo’s game? Was he finally making good on all of Jaskier’s assholish attempts to make them public nemeses? Maybe Valdo could read minds; realized the strange feelings the bard had begun to have towards him and decided he was thoroughly disgusted by him.
Jaskier let himself slink into the beginnings of a depression and decided he’d just have to try and shake that off and find out what was going on with his Fri… Rival.
He followed Valdo whenever he could, ambushing him after lectures and hunting him down in pubs. He startled him so fiercely one of these times that the other bard broke down into what sounded like a very painful coughing fit, enough that caused him to pull out a handkerchief to cough into until his lungs settled from the surprise. He found this odd, and then odder still when as he went to ask after his well-being, Valdo abruptly shoved the handkerchief away and growled at him. Growled! Like some angry dog! And left Jaskier once again staring after him as he stomped away, agog.
A month later, Jaskier’s persistence had turned into straight up concern. Valdo was less angry with his antics and instead seemed constantly tired. There were bags under his lovely brown eyes and his hair had turned greasy and less kempt. He consulted these odd symptoms with a friend studying medicine and she mentioned it sounded like some sort of wasting disease. Jaskier was only familiar with a few of them, but none of them sounded like a pleasant time.
So, while still firmly trying to convince his brain that Valdo was still an absolute Arse and absolutely did not deserve his time or affection, Jaskier made soup. Warm pot nestled in the crook of his arm, he marched up to Valdo’s residence and knocked firmly on the door. No one answered. He knocked again. Deep coughs followed by the sounds of mild choking came from within and Jaskier decided basic decorum was right out the window. He pried open the door and rushed inside, looking for the source of the distress.
And there was Valdo; laid out on a lounge chair looking even worse than usual and slowly lowering a cloth from his mouth. There were flecks of blood on his lips and it appeared as if he couldn’t draw a full breath. Jaskier plunked the soup pot right on the floor and went directly to Valdo’s side.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were so ill?” He asked softly, dropping all the pretense of being a rampant jerk.
Valdo just looked at him sadly, too tired to muster up his recent attempts at dismissal. “I did not want you to know, Jaskier. You’re like the sun. So warm and happy. I could not bring myself to have you worry so I pushed you away.”
Jaskier’s eyes went a little wide and he reached out to take Valdo’s hand. It was so cold in his own, and he could make out the fine bones in his fingers. A wasting disease indeed. He rubbed his thumb over the other’s knuckles and shook his head slightly in dismay.
“I’ve been a right arse to you for years. Look at us. Idiots to the bitter end.” He murmured wistfully. “Is… is there anything I can do to help? To ease anything at all? I, uh… I made you soup. I thought it might be… nice?”
Now it was Valdo’s turn to look surprised. He squeezed the hand in his and looked over at the pot on the floor. “You made me soup? You’ve never made me anything.”
“Okay yes. Fine. That is true. I’m a complete and total jerk. My feet should not be gracing your illustrious doorstep, my knees not fit for your carpet. I’m sorry, okay? You’re talented. So talented. I’m at a loss without your poetry to bounce my own works off of.”
At this confession, Valdo cracked a little smile. “Maybe there is hope for you and I after all, dear Jaskier… You see, I ha-” A painful coughing fit cut him off abruptly, the force of it causing Valdo to nearly curl in on himself, clutching the cloth to his mouth as his body attempted to forcefully remove whatever was clearly killing him. Jaskier kept his hand firmly in Valdo’s as he tried to rub the other’s back in comfort. The touch seemed to help in some small way, and the hacking died off. Valdo slumped backwards panting, the hand with the cloth falling into his lap.
There, amidst the spattering of blood, lay small bright yellow flowers. Jaskier gasped loudly and shook his head.
“No, it’s a myth. It’s not real.”
Valdo attempted to clear his throat as he bunched the cloth with the flowers up and tried to hide it from view. “You of.. Of all people… .should know the… power of a story… where they come from...the truths hidden in the tales….We’re storytellers.. It’s.. poetic in it’s own way…”
“It’s a tragedy born of the old stories, is what it is. Wasting away from unrequited love? It’s madness. No one actually dies of a broken heart.”
“I’m not heartbroken, Jaskier. I’m simply in love with someone who is my sun and sky… and who absolutely cannot stand me. It will make the most glorious tragedy. I have already begun to write it.” Valdo smiled brightly as he caught his breath better and shifted to sit more comfortably. He squeezed his hand once more before letting it drop. “With any luck, I will finish it before I can no longer write.”
Jaskier stared into the middle distance over Valdo’s shoulder, taking it all in. It all seemed too outlandish to be real. Things that happened in tragedies and stories never actually happened in real life. Soulmates weren’t real. Kisses didn’t break curses. And people didn’t suffocate slowly on flowers for being rejected. But as he slowly shifted his gaze back to the pale, but still softly smiling, face of the absolute nuisance that was Valdo Marx, at lot of things clicked into place for him.
He had never hidden pithy put-downs into his sonnets. He had never crafted masterful insults through his songs. He had honestly and truly sung from the heart and he had called him his Sun. Valdo had been unashamedly, unabashedly, in love with him from the start. He was coughing up small yellow flowers… Buttercups...and had slipped back into waxing poetic over it all. Lord, the fool was fully gone on him. And he had been nothing but the most righteous arse over it all, so very full of himself and sure that the other was somehow mocking him and jealous of his talent.
Turns out it was Jaskier himself who was the pompous wastrul and talentless hack. He shuffled forward on his knees until he was flush against the lounge. Valdo looked over at him and lifted an eyebrow in question. A beautiful eyebrow set in a beautiful face that Jaskier was tired of pretending he wasn’t also long gone on as well. What was it that the storybooks always said saved the day, woke the princess, broke the curse? Ah… yes…
Jaskier set both hands on the cushion of the lounge and angled himself just right to gently lean forward and press his lips right against Valdo’s own. The man below him went very very still. His lips were soft, but the lack of any response twisted something uncomfortable in his gut and he slowly broke the kiss and moved away, eyes cast downwards.
“I’m sorry, I-”
“Jaskier, what-?”
They spoke at once. Jaskier looked up and noticed color on Valdo’s cheeks, his mouth slightly open and his eyes nearly comically wide in shock. He swallowed around a sudden lump in his throat.
“I’ve been a right arse to you, but I love you, Valdo Marx. And I do not wish to see you suffer a moment longer. It will kill me too.”
Valdo’s eyes fluttered shut and he let out a deep exhale. Jaskier panicked for a brief second, wondering if he had actually killed him, before he sucked in a very long and full breath and opened his eyes again. They shined with unshed tears and Jaskier had a moment to admire the sight and the warm feeling at finally giving in before he was being tackled to the ground in a crushing hug and warm tiny kisses were being pressed to whatever skin the other could find.
A laugh erupted from them, and Valdo’s kisses shifted from surprised, affectionate pecks, to soft and tender kisses meant to explore the other’s skin. Jaskier shifted slightly under him and set a hand to his chin, drawing him back to his own lips to continue the kissing. Valdo hummed happily and nearly melted into what he hoped was now his new Beau. The university community was going to have a field day with this.
Jaskier rolled them over and slowly moved his head away. Valdo attempted to chase after one more kiss, making him chuckle. “As much as I am enjoying making out on the floor like we’re back in year one… are you sure? Are you alright? You were coughing up most of your lung a minute ago.”
Valdo smiled up at him and reached up to run his fingers through Jaskier’s hair. “Yes, my love, I am quite well now. You’ve restored me and I suffer no longer. Now the story I write shall have a happy ending. A proper fairy tale after all.”
“Well, if you insist. Though I would be grateful to continue this discussion somewhere that is not the floor.”
Valdo’s laugh was bright and filled him with warmth as they both got to their feet and he began to tug Jaskier in the direction of a more private space. “Anything for the prettiest bard in Oxenfurt.”
And wasn’t Jaskier pleasantly surprised when Valdo took it upon himself to demonstrate just how much better he now felt, repeatedly and with vigor. As it turned out, stories always had more truth to them than he had ever expected, for this cursed ailment was most assuredly soothed with a Kiss.

Guide To Writing Will-They-Won’t-They
Tumblr media
This is also available on wordsnstuffblog.com!
– This subject has been highly requested and I get a lot of questions around it. Most romance writers have experience toying with this dynamic in character relationships, so I figured I’d create a guide for those who love the delicious tension of a will-they-won’t-they relationship, because they’re difficult to do correctly, and when they’re not done right, it can throw a whole story down the drain.
Patreon || Ko-Fi || Masterlists || Work In Progress || Studyblr || Studygram
When They Do End Up Together
Make sure it’s not too... convenient. It’s bad technique to build and build onto tension just to provide an easy, clean-wrapped resolution that makes the conflict seem insignificant. If people are hesitant to get together or stay together, there is a good reason, and that shouldn’t be glossed over by the ending.
When They Don’t End Up Together
Make your reader see that this isn’t a tragedy. If two people don’t end up together, there’s a reason, and it’s a valid one, and just because two couples really like each other or even love each other, doesn’t mean they’re right for each other, and at some point both of them will know that and let that stand. The message shouldn’t be “salvage every potential relationship because if you don’t your life is over”, it should be “some relationships just aren’t right, and love is a choice, not a feeling”.
When The Issue Is Constant Conflict
Constant conflict is a bad sign. Occasional disagreements and arguments are okay, and healthy in most cases, but they should always be resolved peacefully. If a couple can never seem to do that, and that’s the purpose for repetitive breaking up/getting back together, then they probably aren’t right for each other. Please don’t send a message to your readers that couples that constantly fight to the point of deciding they would rather be with someone else than work through it ever ends in a healthy and satisfying way for either party.
When The Issue Is Lack of Communication
Lack of communication is applicable to most will-they-won’t-they relationships, and most relationship tension in general, but I want to specifically mention this because it’s not only lack of communication about initial feelings, but the lack of communication about how the relationship is going, what each partner wants out of the relationship, and what each partner does and does not enjoy in a relationship. These can all cause repetitive breakups because they seem more ambiguous a problem in the moment, and usually cause the “I just don’t think this relationship feels right”, which a character can forget easily once the relationship is over, making them return to their old partner immediately.
When The Issue Is An Existing Dynamic
(The specific request I’m addressing mentioned friends-with-benefits, but this is an SFW blog so I’ll be answering this generally; but yes that is what this section is.) If two characters have an unusual relationship, such as being best friends, which prevents them from trying to level up the relationship out of fear, this provides so many opportunities to build tension from the very beginning. Use this to your advantage, but be original with it. This is an extremely popular trope, and can put off an audience immediately if it shows signs of being completely cliche.
Pacing The Tension To Be Endearing Rather Than Stupid
The tension needs to be built up steadily, but it needs to be reasonable and each instance where the tension is demonstrated needs to be reasonable and fit into the context of each scene. If you avoid thinking about how your tension will come across, more likely than not, it will feel dumb and unnecessary rather than endearing.
Common Struggles
~ effectively writing moments of interrupted tension... Do it at the near-boiling point. This should be the climax of the tension, where they’re right near getting to the point of understanding each other, and they’re finally about to get together and someone or something, even themselves, gets in the way and brings them back to square one.
~ Balancing tension between characters... Moments of tension should be balanced with moments of genuine enjoyment of each other’s company. A lot of tension will be somewhat uncomfortable for the characters, and therefore uncomfortable for the reader, and you need to break that up with fluffy, romantic moments or it will be.. awkward.
~ At what point does tension become irritating rather than entertaining?... When the reasons for the tension become illogical or repetitive. If you’v written the same “we’re two loners at a party” scene three times with no variance in events, that’s irritating to the reader. New and unusual sources of tension through exciting instances of action and reaction between the characters that builds to a near boiling point where the reader and the characters share a longing for some resolution (due to genuine investment in the relationship growing) is entertaining.
~ Avoiding predictability while keeping the trajectory... You can keep your story exciting and on the same track by using subplots to introduce conflicts that draw the reader’s attention away from the way the relationship is growing before delivering a major twist that affects, but doesn’t halt or change the way in which the relationship is growing.
~ Not making the characters’ reluctance unreasonable... Each character should have personal and logical reasons for avoiding addressing their feelings that the reader can empathize with and understand. It’s as simple as that.
~ Will-they-won’t they that spans large periods of time... If the will-they-won’t-they surrounds a relationship that spans huge amounts of time (such as one that is spanned over 50+ years) can be depicted very well as long as you choose the moments and events that you include in the actual storytelling very wisely, and sparingly. There should be a balance of events told from the present moment where the tension is at a near boiling point, and events that establish how the relationship has grown and continues to, and why it took so long to do so.

Mallie’s Reylo Fanfic Rec List:
This is in no particular order and not limited to! There are so many talented writers out there! These are stories that have really stuck with me, so I am sharing them with you all! I will add as I go.
The Inheritance of the Resistance by @waterlilyrose
Rating: Explicit
Summary: The discovery of a new unknown Duchess of the House of Kenobi brings new life to the Rebellion Court. Having lost their old Queen Leia, Rey and Han are forced into a deeply unconventional but quietly happy marriage. Having never had a family of her own, Rey sees Han as the father figure she always longed for.
So when the disgraced Prince returns to court to make amends with his aging King, how will he take to the girl who is now effectively his stepmother?
Medieval/Tudor Reylo.
Review: This has Tudor vibes - it is unreal. I love history, so naturally historically AUs are right up my ally. I was quite impressed by the setup and dynamic. The author uses Star Wars terms in place for the historical ones. This doesn’t follow the Tudor chain of events, but veers in it’s own original direction. Ben and Rey for this interesting relationship and it is quite troubled because Rey is actually married to Ben’s father ::gasp::. Love this fiction. So beautifully heartbreaking! (complete)
There Shall I Be By philcollins
Rating: Not Rated (Mature if anything)
Summary: AU in which Rey, our lonely scavenger from The Force Awakens, meets Kylo Ren under very different circumstances - he's a shepherd on Jakku. Rey inherits an estate on the moon Ceathea and Kylo follows her there, works for her there, and soon encounters his hated old foe, Uncle Luke Skywalker. Will Rey ever accept Kylo's love? Will crusty old Luke Skywalker come between Rey and her true love? More familiar faces will make an appearance in this Force-free story of love, longing, angst, and anger.
Review: This story was so heartbreaking, but so good. A mix of pining, angst, drama and uncertainty. This story I read nonstop and was quite heart broken, but these two stubborn people just need a little extra time in order to figure out they were meant for one another. This story had me sighing and talking aloud with frustration! So well-written! (Complete)
The End of Father Kylo By Sweet_Solitude
Rating: Explicit
Summary: After a filthy youth and almost suffering a great loss, Kylo turns to priesthood and leads a virtuous life. That is until he meets a girl who turns his world upside down and reminds him that he has a functioning body below his waist.
Review: Again, this one was found during my priest Kylo fazes. Don’t judge me! This has everything you would think when you think of the church and priests, though there is a little bit of something else. Yes, I am going to hell. I know this. Smut, smut! Love this kinky one-shot. If you aren’t offended by this, give it a read. ::fans face:: (one-shot)
Fault Lines By Devil Betty
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Rey has always dreamed of a family. She starts to believe she could have it when she moves in with her new foster mother, Leia Organa. Then Leia’s son, Ben, moves back home and threatens to ruin the life Rey is trying to build. Nothing will prepare either of them for the truth. Some family secrets should stay hidden.
Review: This story is a “page-turner”. It has a simple setting, but so much happens and the dialogue between both Kylo and Rey are so intriguing. The chemistry is unmistakable and the lemons are to die for. Unfortunately, this is one minor thing that has a draw back, and both character experience a major revelation that hurts them both. Please read warnings before reading!!

Summary: In 1975, Finalizer played a gig at CBGB. The punk band gave their best, the crowd went wild, but a young girl named Rey wanted more.
God Save Them All.
Review: AH! This AU I really couldn’t get enough of because it involves our lovely Kylo and Rey, but is also peppered with sex, drugs and rock-n-roll! I mean...no on the drugs, but in all seriousness, I LOVE Rock-n-roll! So, naturally I honed in on this like no one’s tomorrow! The chemistry between Kylo and Rey is off the damn charts! Ugh, the sexual tension! I absolutely love how this starts as a childhood crush and as she gets older Kylo sees her and is completely blown away! (Uncomplete)
Love and Comfort, Sex and Wondering If This Could Be Our Turn By AquaWolfGirl
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Anonymous Prompt: Ben and Rey are in college and best friends, and very much in love, they just don't realize it. Rey is tired of people making jokes about her being a virgin, so she asks Ben to help her out.
Review: Virgin Rey has a little delima. Ben is there to help guide her. This is actually a very sweet and sexy story! Give it a read! The author is a fantastic writer! (One-Shot)

Summary: Born on the fringes of a dystopian dictatorship, Rey has lived most of her life in the shadows until desperation drives her into the hands of the government. Her unblemished womb is her only salvation, which leads to her being placed as a Handmaid in the household of Commander Kylo Ren and his infertile wife.
Her task? Produce a healthy child for the Commander, or be banished to a life of hardship and almost certain death. A Reylo Handmaid’s Tale AU
Review: I loved The Handmaid's Tale, so naturally when I visited this story, I was drawn to that aspect. There is non-con in this, so please beware when reading. If you do not know the Hulu original series, refer to their site for a detailed description. The author, in response to this TV show, stays true, but brings originality and this is really a wonderfully written piece. The author is extremely talented! (Unfinished)
Innocents Lost By Pontmercy44
Rating: Explicit
Summary: “That’ll scar.” Han stood behind him, nervously. He’d always been nervous around him, first, because he was a baby, and Han didn’t understand babies, and then, because he had the Force, and Han didn’t understand the Force. “Girls like scars.”
“It’s not like it matters.” Ben looked out at the thousands of spires. “I’m going to be a Jedi.”
Han grunted in sympathy, and then sat next to him, swinging his legs off the side of the tower. The urge to feel alive, to take risks and taste danger – that was what he’d inherited from his father. “Heard you got off the hook.”
“Not exactly. Community service.”
“Better than a detention block.” Han leaned back on his hands.
Ben scoffed. “It’s asinine.”
His father shifted, looking up at the stars, through the hazy, translucent atmosphere of Hosnian Prime. “What do they have you doing? Picking up orbit pollution, or something?”
“Worse.” Ben snorted. “Teaching orphans to read and write Basic. On Jakku.”
Han winced. “Only slightly better than a detention block.”
Review: Love this story! I flew through it. Very well-written! Ben has to do community service as punishment and meets little Rey on Jakku. This forbidden relationship is beautiful and bittersweet at the same time. I love this first love adaptation! The author went above and beyond with these two! (complete)
Daddy Dearest By AquaWolfGirl
Rating: Explicit
Summary: When single father Ben Solo moves into his new apartment in Bespin with 5-month old daughter Amy in tow, he hopes to hell and back that this life will be better than the one they left behind in upstate New York. It's not long before his life becomes a cycle of work, Amy, work, Amy. One night, while trying to fish his keys from his pocket without waking his infant daughter, Rey, his next door neighbor, offers a helping hand.
Review: Daddy Ben! He is a great dad who falls for the babysitter. Interesting read; well written! You feel so sorry for Ben, but also Rey is a God send! Sweet interactions! Give it a read if you want some light hearted, fluffy interactions. Not much for fluff, but this was really a nice read! :3
Stigmata By SaintHeretical
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Fifteen years after tragedy tore them apart, a priest and his sister band together to protect a homeless girl who appears to have been touched by God. Too bad his excommunicated nephew seems to have other plans for her.
A Reylo slow burn Modern/Religious AU.
Review: After the priest hype came out, I searched merely to humor myself. I found a few fictions that really had an interesting plot. This is one of them. Focused on Christianity and different groups within. Kylo and Leia are curious about this young girl who turns out to be homeless and has a curious development. She has formed the stigmata. This really is different than anything I have experienced. I usually don’t go for stuff like this, but there is enough angst and romance to fill my needs. LOVE it!
World In My Eyes By Sasstasticmad
Rated: Explicit
Summary: "The bond should be dead," Rey says through gritted teeth. "Just like you.”
"The bond is only this strong because of you," Kylo Ren tells her. "You're the one who touched me. You took my hand and let me hold yours. This is your fault, not mine. (A post-TLJ force bond fic)
Review: This is after TLJ. I was obsessed for a while, which I am sure comes to no shock to anyone! Everyone was wrapped up in the force bond, which sasstasticmad delivers VERY well! There is so much continued tension between Rey and Kylo. It is quite interesting to see these two continue their interaction from opposite groups. The Resistance Vs First Order. (incomplete)
Wolves By @albastargazer
Rated: Explicit
Summary: Rey Kenobi is a human beta until one fatal night and everything changes. With the existence of werewolves turning her world upside down, she is left with only her boss, Ben Solo, to help. Little did she know he is an Alpha wolf and the next leader of his pack, intent on claiming his rare omega.
Review: A/O/B dynamic. This story really is amazing. I have always had a soft spot for werewolves and I haven’t really had the pleasure of finding one that really stuck yet, of course, that was until I stumbled upon this little number. The dynamic between Ben and Rey is quite interesting. A horrible event leads Rey down an interesting path. Ben takes charge and attempts to help Rey. Interesting revelations emerge, however. (incomplete)
Hatchling By g_girl143 @gwendy85
Rated: Teen
Summary: Rey's leads a predictable life as a general labourer at Niima Junkyard until an unexpected visit from the daughter she doesn't even know exists turns her world into a tailspin.
Review: This is simply the sweetest story. I binged it in one sitting. So sad that it doesn’t update as frequently, but when I do get an e-mail I am jumping for joy! This author really is talented. Love the way this dynamic is set up. There are so many intriguing questions-- you are left wanting more. So bitter sweet it isn’t complete! It really is something I haven’t seen done before. Really hope that it is completed someday! So much potential! I cannot wait to see what becomes of this new found family knit that develops on a whim, no thanks for Rey’s surprise daughter! ;)
Kismet by @ladylionhart
Rated: Mature
Summary: Sometimes, what seems like a simple mistake is truly the first step of a fateful journey.
- Or the one where a single text message sent to the wrong number completely changes the lives of two people and those around them.
Review: Easily one of my all time favs! This is such an amazingly written, intriguing AU. It really begins like none other via text. Both parties, shockingly, continue their witty bouts of conversation until they both begin to develop feelings for one another without actually seeing one another. When they finally begin to interact on a level far from platonic, it heats up fast and you are left needing more! LOVE!
Summer Heat By @isharan
Rating: Explicit
Summary: A lonely young woman arrives at the cottage she inherited from her grandfather on a remote lake in northern Ontario, to find her neighbor is a rare Alpha, a relic of the old days when humans were ruled by their designation. Across a long hot summer, they connect over their shared history, and she finds that the past may not be as far away as she assumed.
Review: ::Bats lashes:: What can I say about this one? Well, I am slowly dying because man is this a slow burn! This is an A/O/B dynamic, but it is so well written that it isn’t just a heat and commence screwing each other’s brains out. No, this really has amazing storyline that has you asking questions or attempting to figure out the author’s train of thought. Gosh, there are so many good things to say about this fic! Ben is absolutely a dream in this fiction too. I cannot even begin to describe because I just wouldn’t do it justice. This fiction killed me in a good way! (Incomplete)
Serotonin and Dopamine By Pontmercy44
Rating: Explicit
Summary: He could lie and say it was because he was gentleman, but that wasn’t quite true. “I – well, I want to take advantage of you. But I know better.”
Rey looked at him for a long moment, and Ben thought she might slap him. She didn’t. She started to laugh, shaking her head as if she couldn’t quite believe it. Finally, she said, smiling, “Goodnight, Ben.”
Ben turned and walked slowly back to his car. He heard her door creak open, but he didn’t hear it slam shut. It felt as if he was walking away from his chance, from his chance to have something good and uncomplicated and nice.
Ben turned around, and went back to the door. Rey waited for him, biting her lip. He took off his stocking cap and held it in his hands in front of himself. His ears were cold without his hat, but he was in the posture of remorse and penance. "I'm sorry. I'm an ass. Can I kiss you again?"
Review: This fiction was different and reeled me in because Ben was different. In this fiction he has mental disorder that makes it difficult to form relationships. Though, Rey takes to him and Ben to her in the sweetest of ways! I really liked the development in this story. The author delivers fluffy feels too. I am not usually one that enjoys a ton of fluff, but they did right by it! (Complete)
An empire to be won By Bitterbones @dvrksister
Rating: Explicit
Summary: The grin of satisfaction that split Rey’s face was utterly demented. “In three days time I will be wed to her son.” Rose blanched at the word son, apparently having been unaware of the familial relationship between her beloved general and the scourge of the galaxy.
Rey chuckled and continued, “It will be televised across the galaxy, and I’m certain that she will be watching; supportive mother that she is. Tell her to look on her son’s face, and see that he is gone. Tell her that the mark she sees there is my own, that it is an engagement gift from myself. And tell her that where she failed to save Ben Solo, I will raise Kylo Ren.”
[In which Kylo and Rey are betrothed as children and separated for their respective darkside trainings. Their reintroduction as adults is explosive, to say the least.]
Review: Cold Showers. I swear, these two, from the beginning, have so much sexual chemistry I had to fan myself when reading. Holy shit, this was tense. I LOVE her Kylo. This is an arranged marriage fiction, but even so there is so much going on in the world she so wonderfully weaved as well as the character interactions. You will be flying through each chapter begging for more! (Incomplete)
Eunoia By MalevolantReverie @malevolent-reverie @meth-lab-shenanigans
Rate: Explicit
Summary: Rey Kenobi, an underachieving college student becomes tangled in a twisted web with her astronomy professor, Kylo Ren, who is hiding a dark secret. (Unfinished)
Review: Violent, dark, heart wrenching, Eunoia is the cream of the crop for dark fictions. I am a huge horror fan, so naturally I was curious to read something dark and dreary in regards to Reylo. The author doesn’t hope back, which I am quite pleased about. She really builds her word and characters fantastically. The dark character of Kylo really stays completely vile. Please only read if you can hand reading explicit content. Contains non-con!
The Quietest Evening By MalevolantReverie @malevolent-reverie @meth-lab-shenanigans
Rated: Mature
Summary: Every so often, a girl disappears. No one knows where they go or why they’re taken, but they're never seen alive again. Rey, the police chief’s daughter, is next.
Review: This story is one of my favorites from MR. This one wasn’t nearly as graphic as the others she has written, but I really like the storyline she has built here. It was dark, contained secrets and revelations that had my jaw dropping. I really was at the edge of my seat for this one. It really got my heart pumping! If you are looking for a dark, angsty thriller this is the story for you. Please be aware there are triggers and non-con! (Completed)
Nobody Knows By hernamewasalice @hernamewasalicewriter
Rated: Explicit
Summary: Nobody knows that the loving wife of Ben Solo was kidnapped as a teenager. Nobody knows. Not their family or closest friends. Not even their twelve year old son, Benny.
Review: Amazing story! This is another extremely dark fic, but more so the past that is associated with Rey and Kylo. Kylo has so many secrets, so does Rey. They look like the perfect couple, but really they have a more sinister start. There are parts that are tender and sweet, but the reality and hard truth of it all is quite painful. Author has an extremely fantastic beginning where she pulls you in. It is seen through the eyes of their son! So good! Recommend! Please be warned, however, there is non-con and violence! (Unfinished)

The only problem is that kitten is Stiles and he doesn't want Erica's fingers anywhere near him. He hisses and when her hand keeps on coming, he sinks his teeth into it. Erica howls and shakes her hand, making Stiles fly off and skid across the loft floor.

"He let you hold him," Erica grumbles.
"I didn't lunge at an animal the size of a potato with my nails out," Peter points out, and YEAH.

Division: Chapter 1
“As she turned to leave a sharp rattling sound above her head drew her attention. The tabby she-cat glanced up to watch the leaves on the maple tree twist and shudder fiercely in the wind. A small cluster was suddenly snatched off the tree, torn away by the wind. Fowl counted nine flaming red pieces as she watched them hurtle through the air, straight in the direction of the far-off mountains.” Read Chapter 1 of Division below, or check it out on Wattpad here!
Tumblr media
Fowl opened her eyes slowly, head spinning with the remnants of her dream. Weak shafts of light shone between the rotting walls where she had built her nest. Her jaw split in a yawn as she recalled what she had witnessed seemingly moments ago. A group of four starlit cats had been gathered around the base of a glowing oak tree, their heads bowed together as they spoke quietly amongst themselves. But why had Fowl been there to witness this seemingly private conversation? The tabby she-cat shook her massive head, thick strands of fur billowing around her as she heaved herself to her paws. This wasn't the first time Fowl had dreamed of starry cats in unknown places- she was all too familiar with Starclan, a group of deceased ancient cats with strange powers and countless moons of knowledge. For reasons that had always been somewhat of a mystery to her, StarClan had been walking in her dreams since she was a mere kit, watching over her. Fowl reluctantly pushed herself out of the space she slept, pricking her ears and taking in her surroundings. She had made her home in an abandoned Tree-Nest; a small twoleg structure that gripped the trunk of a thick tree, suspended many fox-leaps off the ground. One corner of the Tree-Nest had a square shaped hole above ground, which Fowl was able to tuck into and protect herself from wind on the colder nights. The Tree-Nest itself was decently sheltered from the elements. It had only two large holes in it; one which was quite high up and far too small for a Twoleg to fit through, and another which was almost the height of the nest itself. Lost in her thoughts, Fowl picked her way across the soft floor, stretching her stiff limbs. She thought back to the dream; the hushed voices of the mystical cats sat heavy in her mind and she couldn't help but to wonder who they were. Something about them seemed to be incredibly important. She remembered them speaking of a curse, and her fur prickled along her spine. She let out an impatient hiss as she stepped outside, shaking her head to clear her mind of the dream all together. I've told them a thousand times. Fowl thought in annoyance. If they want to tell me something, tell me. No vague messages. Determined to push the dream out of her mind, Fowl quickly scrambled down to the base of the tree; hopping on the low hanging branches before landing with a dull thud on the soft forest floor. She raised her head and scented the air, hoping to catch an early morning meal after a long night of rest. Almost instantly the scent of a cardinal hit the roof of her mouth, and Fowl dropped into a hunter's crouch to follow its trail. She quickly spotted the little red bird a few pawsteps away and observed it for a moment, before springing and biting hard on its neck. The creature gave a loud screech before going silent. Fowl finished the bird in a few gulps before straightening up and wandering off, thoughts going back to the dream. No matter how hard she tried focusing on other things her mind kept flashing back to the four cats crouched together and speaking in anxious tones. It seemed as though they were saying something important, something that Fowl couldn't help but to think was something she needed to know. Lost in thought, Fowl didn't realize where she had wandered to until the strong scent of twolegs hit her nose. She quickly trotted over to a thick patch of bracken and dropped into a crouch, eyes narrowing as she observed the twoleg nest in front of her.
It sat in a secluded spot, with a thick growth of forest on three sides and a clearing in the front. By the stench Fowl knew that was where a small, dirt thunderpath was located. At the back of the nest a smooth path of stone was laid out, leading to a jumbled twoleg garden that was heavy with the scents of various herbs and flowers. An impressive maple tree had also taken root in the soft grass, resting between the back forest and the garden. It's shining red leaves glowed a fiery color in the early afternoon sun. Fowl watched the Twoleg nest for a bit, crouching low in her hiding place and enjoying the warmth of the thick sunlit air. Suddenly, with a loud clatter, the back door opened. Fowl caught only a glimpse of a long twoleg arm outstretched, holding the door open as two cats trotted out. One had dark fur with a white belly while the other was completely black, head to toe. Fowl let out a soft purr, seeing her two kittypet friends tread carefully out into the garden. Once both of them were outside the twoleg let the door close with a loud slam, causing Fowl's ears to twitch from the unpleasant noise. The tabby she-cat listened to the sound of the twoleg lumber away before letting out a soft hiss, attempting to alert the kittypets to her presence. They didn't seem to notice her; the black one was sniffing at the flowers in the garden before reading forward and chewing on a few leaves. The other was pawing about curiously, raising his muzzle to sniff the air. Fowl exhaled in annoyance that the kittypets hadn't noticed her presence. She pushed her way out of the undergrowth warily, eyes keeping a close watch on the twoleg nest. She didn't have a particular fear of the twolegs, as she knew some were harmless. But some she knew, were not. Fowl padded over to the black and white cat first, who didn't seem to notice her presence until her nose almost touched the tip of his tail. Upon seeing her shadow behind him he whipped around, ears plastered flat against his head and yellow eyes wide. His mouth was open and his white tipped paw was raised af if he intended to swipe at Fowl, before he realized he recognized the Loner and instantly relaxed. "Fox Dung!" He spat, forcing his fur to lie flat. "You should give a cat a warning before sneaking up on them like that!" "I did warn you, Whiskers." Fowl spoke politely. "And if your ears and nose weren't stuffed with twoleg scent you might've noticed me." Whiskers waved his paw dismissively, already over the excitement. His sister came bounding over at the disturbance, purring at the sight of the Loner. "Oh hello Fowl!" She mewed, bright green eyes sparkling. "It's nice to see you!" "Hello Flower." Fowl responded, moving to sit and drawing her fluffy tail over her paws. "You seem to be enjoying the nice weather." Her whiskers twitched as she smelled the scent of herbs oozing from Flower's dark pelt. "Oh yes." Flower responded, mimicking Fowl's position and sitting delicately in the grass. "I almost caught a bee in the garden! But I remember when Sheldon down the road got stung and his nose turned three times its size! So I left it alone." The three cats purred in amusement together for a moment. "So what brings you here?" Whiskers asked Fowl, before licking his paw and drawing it over his ears. Fowl hesitated at the question. She had known Whiskers and Flower for some time and in fact, had practically raised them. She was quite close with the kittypet siblings but she didn't particularly enjoy telling them about her dreams. They knew of Fowl's connection to StarClan but being the kittypets that they were, often dismissed her interactions with the starry Warriors as nothing more than an overactive imagination. Fowl admitted that had she not been meeting with the mystical cats since she was a kit herself, she most likely would dismiss their existence as well. A strong gust of wind buffeted Fowl's fur and she realized the two kittypets were staring at her, waiting for an answer. "Err..." Fowl meowed. "I had a strange dream." At once both of the kittypets shot each other glances, which Fowl knew meant they were preparing to dismiss her dreams before even hearing them. Fowl suppressed a sigh, digging her claws into the short grass beneath her paws. Can't you at least pretend to care? She thought in frustration. "Well..." Whisker meowed uncertainty. "What happened?" Fowl glanced between the two, wondering if she should even bother. She closed her eyes and inhaled before pouring out what she had witnessed; starting with the darkened cave before moving onto the mysterious conversation, and finally ending with the four cats disappearing into the moonlight.
Whiskers and Flower blinked at Fowl as she finished, neither looking as interested in what the dream could mean as Fowl felt. "Is..that all?" Flower asked gently, trying not to sound rude. "Yes." Fowl responded. "And I know it's not a lot but it was still so different than any of the other dreams I've shared with StarClan in the past. These cats seemed important- and whatever they were talking about seemed important." Both kittypets looked unimpressed as Fowl continued, desperately. "There was a curse!" She added on. "Surely that's a cause for concern?" Whiskers stood up, stretching casually. A small butterfly fluttered above his head and he glanced at it, distracted for a moment before responding. "I think you're just looking for things to stress over." Whiskers meowed in a relaxed tone, lazily turning his gaze back to Fowl. "You probably ate some bad prey before sleep- that's the real curse." Fowl gave a disappointed sigh. Of course Whiskers wasn't interested- he never was. "I'm sure you have nothing to worry about." Flower added on, shooting her brother a sharp look. "Your dreams have never led to anything bad before, right?" Fowl shrugged. Her relationship with StarClan may have never led to anything too serious, but she couldn't deny that it began out of tragedy. Another gust of wind blew, stronger than the last. Whiskers and Flower ducked their heads down and gave annoyed yowls as they were almost knocked off their paws. "This is no weather for us." Whiskers called over the rushing wind. "It's cold!" Flower whined. The two kittypets offered the Loner friendly mews of goodbye before dashing back to their twoleg nest, yowling to be let in. Fowl watched them sprint away, fluffing up her thick fur against the wind. As she turned to leave a sharp rattling sound above her head drew her attention. The tabby she-cat glanced up to watch the leaves on the maple tree twist and shudder fiercely in the wind. A small cluster was suddenly snatched off the tree, torn away by the wind. Fowl counted nine flaming red pieces as she watched them hurtle through the air, straight in the direction of the far-off mountains. She stared for a few moments more before ducking her head and running into the forest, hoping to find some shelter from the fierce wind among the thick trees. The ominous rumbling of thunder followed her as she sprinted back to the Tree-Nest, and Fowl found that she had a hard time getting the sight of the distant maple leaves out of her head.

the night radio | a rose by any other name
taekook (3064 words)
Taehyung is plucking petals off a rose in broad daylight and in a library. In a fucking public library smack in the middle of Seoul.
Jeongguk steals a look at the older from behind the cover of his textbook, unable to comprehend the situation that has been going on since an hour ago. A stray red petal floats to the space on the table in front of Jeongguk and he switches his line of sight between it and Taehyung.
He knows Taehyung has been feeling down for the entire day already. He had entered the building in the morning to Taehyung’s pouts that had deteriorated to silent gazes into the distance by afternoon.
Taehyung’s metallic badge flashes as he flops onto the table top and makes a low frustrated moan. The sight makes Jeongguk question the other’s liability as a librarian. Not to mention, why he has been going to the same library that’s too noisy on weekends just for a glimpse of Taehyung.
How long has it been? A month? Two? He thinks it’s closing half a year that he’s coming here every weekend. Recently, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are added to his schedule as well since his classes end in the early afternoon on these days.
“Hyung, are you okay?” he finally asks.
The library is humming in low voices of its patrons in the background and Taehyung looks up from the table with an upturned mouth. He answers, “No.” The older picks up the rose stem along with what’s left of the hanging petals and his pout extends further. Jeongguk then rests his textbook on the table, gulping heavily.
“What is it?”
“Nothing,” Taehyung says as he stares at Jeongguk ruefully.
“Then why are you plucking the poor rose?”
“I—” The third last petal is pulled out. “—don’t—” The second. “—know.” And the last.
Taehyung crushes the bony rose stem in his hand and buries his face into his folded arms after a few seconds. Looking at how white his knuckles are, Jeongguk worries about the thorns possibly hurting the other’s palm.
Though, he’s more worried about why Kim Taehyung is looking like a kicked puppy instead of the pouncing puppy he knows. Taehyung literally resembles a kicked puppy with his overly long sleeves of a sweater and a nest of hazel brown hair that covers the tips of his ears.
And Jeongguk feels his mood sink along with Taehyung’s.
They’re seated about an arm’s length apart on the opposite sides of the table and Jeongguk contemplates reaching out to flick his hair in mischief. Taehyung always does that to him whenever he strolls by with the book cart. He guesses that it should lighten up his mood.
With his heart low-key thumping hard, Jeongguk stretches his hand over but just as his fingers brush against the wisps of his hair, another librarian swoops in and taps Taehyung on the shoulder. Hair in a ponytail, round glasses, Jeongguk recognises her as Seohyun.
“Taehyung-ah you need to get back to work,” she says, adjusting the pile of books in her arms.
Taehyung lifts his face off the table and nods—gives Jeongguk a meaningful glance—then slides off the chair. He sweeps the petals off the table into his hand before bowing to Seohyun and trudging away to the shelves in the Young Adults section.
Jeongguk trails his gaze after the older, slowly retracting his hand. He’s left to look at the aforementioned rose petal and he blows at it, only for it to do a double loop in the air. It floats down onto the page of his opened textbook.
“I’m sorry I had to cut your moment. The manager is around today and he doesn’t take rests lightly,” Seohyun says in a hushed tone as she pushes in the now empty chair. Jeongguk shakes his head and manages a small smile. The young woman pauses in her actions and continues, “Taehyung’s a really nice guy. Don’t let him slip away.”
Jeongguk sighs, “I know. I know.”
“How long has it been? A few months?”
“Close to half a year.”
Seohyun nods her head and says, “Go talk to him. And ask him out. You two make a cute couple. Fighting!” With that, she walks away, leaving Jeongguk to stone and mull on her words in his corner of the library.
Meeting Taehyung was never part of his plan.
On his way to the university compound half a year ago, it rained and there was no umbrella with him so he had no choice but to seek shelter at the library. Even then, rain had no intention of stopping after an hour of waiting. He settled down to continue studying as he had planned for that day in order to not waste time.
He never meets Taehyung until night. It’s only because of his forgetful ass left his wallet on the seat in a rush to catch the bus that Taehyung manages to message him. By some lucky charm, he had left his number on a piece of scrap paper in his wallet which Taehyung obviously found.
Jeongguk had gotten his wallet, a cute guy’s number and his heart shot down hard by Cupid’s arrows when Taehyung greeted him to return his wallet—all in one night. It was crazy and it still is.
Suddenly thinking of the possibility that Taehyung has seen his crappy sixteen year old identification card picture while rummaging through his wallet, Jeongguk squeezes his eyes shut and shakes his head. Oh god.
This is quite embarrassing.
Opening his eyes a few seconds later, he considers the stray petal that’s a drop of blood on the off-white pages of his textbook. How in the world is Taehyung able to get a rose?
He pushes the question to the back of his head while flipping his textbook to a close. Coming to grips with a resolution to talk to the older, he gets up from his seat and paces towards the right where he had last seen Taehyung.
It takes Jeongguk four turns around the towering shelves, a flight of steps and two detours before finding Taehyung slumped on a bench hidden behind the children’s section. He traipses past the orange and blue rubber floor mats, swallows down a gulp, then glances at the other and the fresh stalk of rose in his hand.
Without shifting his line of sight from the rose, Taehyung spins it by the stalk and says, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” He stops spinning it and looks up at Jeongguk. “Do you know where that line is from?” he asks.
Humour him, the voice in his head whispers. Jeongguk slides his hand into the front pocket of his jeans in an attempt to buy time to think and the answer fortunately apparates into his mind not too long after.
“Romeo and Juliet?”
“Mmm,” Taehyung says, nodding his head sluggishly. His face is a sheet of unamused blankness as he continues, “Everybody dies in that play.”
“Well not everybody. Their parents surv—”
“Shh don’t ruin my emo complex. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. A tragedy.”
The slightest feigned annoyance melts from the older’s face and he closes his eyes, hand holding the rose collapsing onto the bench with a thud. At this point, the concern in Jeongguk rises to a level higher than the Everest of melodrama in Shakespeare’s plays.
He sits down on the space beside Taehyung without hesitation. Gently, he asks, “Hyung what’s wrong?”
“The world is heating up like an oven, North Korea can’t stop playing with its toys and the most influential country in the world is ruled by a Cheetos chip.”
“Hyung.”
Jeongguk is almost sorry for his harsh tone when Taehyung purses his lips forlornly and lets out a soft sigh. After wetting his lips, the other relents as he sits up to a straighter posture. He says, “Parents. They fought again this morning.”
Oh.
Jeongguk can barely imagine that a ball of fluffiness like Taehyung has such a familial background. He watches the other hold up the rose again with a pout that makes Jeongguk want to suffocate him with a hug.
“They’ve been arguing since I was young. Things were quieter in my teens but, I don’t know why they’re starting again. It just makes me very…” Taehyung draws a long breath. “Very sad. Angry? I don’t even know. It just makes me question relationships. I used to think that they love each other but now it’s just all shit. Utter crap. As much as I believe in love, they make me question it so much.”
Jeongguk simply keeps quiet. He can neither say that he understands nor squeeze Taehyung’s hand because he isn’t in a position to do both, so he keeps quiet. Without warning, Taehyung thrusts the rose in Jeongguk’s direction. “Take it. This reminds me of my mother too much.”
Jeongguk stares at it with wide eyes and says, “Um maybe I really shouldn’t.” “Yah just take it that wasn’t a question,” Taehyung rebuts, smacking Jeongguk on the chest with the rose head.
There isn’t much choice when you are face to face with a fuming puppy. Puppies can be vicious and Jeongguk knows from experience. Taking the rose into his hand, he grouses, “You’re really scary when you’re upset you know.”
Taehyung sticks his tongue out at Jeongguk and he pushes the older’s head away with his index finger lightly while Taehyung sways along with the motion like a palm tree in the wind before sticking his tongue out again. Despite feeling his heart skip a beat, Jeongguk scoffs.
Conceal don’t feel.
“Where did you even get it from?”
“The information counter. It’s roses today.”
Just then, a voice crackles in the announcement system overhead, “The library is closing in half an hour. Please vacate the premises as soon as possible. Thank you.” Taehyung stands up from his seat and tells Jeongguk, “I have to go. See you outside.”
Then he disappears down the stairs. Jeongguk twirls the rose between his fingers before getting onto his feet as well. His books and stationery are still downstairs and in need of imminent retrieval if he wants to avoid them getting confiscated by the staff for the third time, aka Taehyung coming after his ass.
The library is nearly empty by the time he reaches his table and he stuffs his texts into his drawstring bag. All the action is to distract himself from Taehyung’s words earlier on, he knows.
Why does it feel as if Taehyung has been trying to hint something at him? Especially the petal plucking escapade. Jeongguk is slow at reading between the lines, he knows that too. Taehyung has told him that he should be doing better as a literature major.
Jeongguk puts on his jacket and swings his bag over his shoulder, then makes his way towards the entrance. At nine in the night, the street outside the library is unusually quiet like it always is. He guesses that it’s the effect of a studying district. One library building, a high school and two universities around the corner can do so much to the atmosphere.
He still holds the rose in his hand as he loiters around the entrance, not wanting to squash the flower in his bag. There aren’t many people walking past him which is a fortunate thing. He looks like he’s about to propose to someone.
The thought brings heat to his cheek when Taehyung’s name comes into his head. Proposing? Ha that’s funny. Jeongguk leans against the cement walls beside the glass doors at the entrance and wobbles his knees to keep himself warm. Although there is no wind, the temperatures dip close to freezing at night in autumn.
The hum of the glass doors opening stir Jeongguk from his trance and Taehyung steps out decked in a light brown, woollen trench coat with a red backpack that Jeongguk is accustomed to seeing. Taehyung offers Jeongguk a small smile before falling into steps with him.
They head to the bus stop without any conversing, then Jeongguk upon feeling the rough stem under his fingers, asks, “Do you still think Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy?” “Totally,” Taehyung answers, turning to look at Jeongguk seriously, “Everybody dies.”
Jeongguk chuckles at the older’s stubbornness. “Granted, some people die. But you’re forgetting the comic in front of the tragedy.” At this, Taehyung makes a face and says, “Yes smartass.”
And Jeongguk for the life of him cannot think of any other things to say although there’s that fiery ball of something which has been growing inside him the entire day. With the rose in hand and Seohyun’s words in his head, he’s tempted to say and do something stupid.
The white lights of the bus stop and advertisement boards begin to come into view after a few minutes’ walk and Jeongguk halts in his footsteps. Taehyung stops walking to cast a surprised look over his shoulder.
Hurrying back to where Jeongguk is standing, he asks, brows furrowing together, “Is everything okay?” His worried face is half illuminated by the street lights and Jeongguk thinks there’s nothing more adorable than Taehyung’s scrunched up brows and slightly reddened cheeks from the cold.
Jeongguk stretches his hand outwards with the rose in his grasp and clears his throat, “Take it back.” An amused smile eases the older’s tensed expression as he relaxes back on the heels of his feet. He asks, “Why should I?”
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Romeo and Juliet, Act 2 Scene 2,” he replies. Taehyung cocks his head and Jeongguk recalibrates his expression, eyes looking into the other’s.
He doesn’t know what exactly he’s doing so the words spin off from the top of his head. “We’ll have a quote competition about roses. If you lose you take the rose,” he blurts. Taehyung gives him an incredulous look and says, “It’s 5 goddamn degrees out here my brain can’t work.”
“We only have five minutes until the bus comes. I’ll start. The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose, George William Curtis.”
“Ah seriously… Love planted a rose and the world turned sweet, Katharine Lee Bates.”
“He that dares not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose, Anne Bronte.”
“Love is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in its defence, Mark Overby.”
“The rose speaks of love silently, in a language known only to the heart, um. Shit I don’t know who this is from.”
“Ha too bad,” Taehyung mocks, “You can complain because roses have thorns, or—”
“Or you can rejoice because thorns have roses. Pablo Picasso,” Jeongguk cuts in softly. It’s the one he’s been waiting for. He’s seen the quote on Taehyung’s lock screen a few times and he hopes it means a lot to him.
Well at least it means a lot to him in this situation.
Taehyung opens his mouth to continue, the falters when he catches on to Jeongguk’s tone. He turns away from Jeongguk’s gaze after a meaningful minute. As his cheeks flush redder, Jeongguk knows that the older realises something is up.
Nevertheless, Taehyung complains, “Yah stop looking at me like that.” “Even a rose fades and dies with the winter, but their love is red through winter and strong in the frost,” Jeongguk pushes on, feeling the embarrassment catching up on him as his cheeks start to heat up. He holds up the rose for Taehyung.
“Wh-who said that bullshit?” the older says and eyes the rose, his eyes flicking between Jeongguk and the flower. Jeongguk answers, “Me. I wrote that bullshit for my critical analysis end of year paper. It wasn’t written with you in mind but but but—”
“But but but but but but,” Taehyung teases, “But what?” He then plucks the rose out of Jeongguk’s fingers.
“But—”
“But but but.”
“Oh my god I can’t do this anymore you know what I mean, right?” Jeongguk deadpans. He’s cringing too hard at himself but the sparkling in Taehyung’s eyes is intense by now. “I mean I really like you and you’re very pretty like this rose and maybe if you will give this a chance—”
The words in his mouth wither as Taehyung breaks away from his mask of coolness and laughs for the first time in the day. Before Jeongguk comprehends what is happening, Taehyung leans forward and wraps his arms around his stiffened body, engulfing him in a layer of warmth.
Jeongguk nuzzles his face in the crook of his neck and oh god, he can feel every hot puff of breath from Taehyung on his jaw. Then his head clears. A lot of cheering sounds inside his head and he hides a smile in the older’s hair while putting his arms around the other.
“You’re so annoying, Jeon Jeongguk.”
Breathing into the mess that is Taehyung’s hair, he asks, “Is that a yes ‘let’s date’ or no ‘I hate you Jeon Jeongguk’?”
“It’s called a ‘fuck you took really long I thought you weren’t interested in me you had me scared for a month’ you know I was questioning myself every day I even plucked those rose petals in front of you—”
With the warmth of the kiss on Taehyung’s forehead tingling on his lips, Jeongguk smiles at Taehyung who simply blinks as if he’s seen a magic trick that he cannot understand. The other opens and closes his mouth like a fish, unable to say anything. Jeongguk realises it’s the first time he shuts Taehyung up so completely that day and not the other way round.
Their faces are mere breaths away when the older says, “You’re really annoying, Jeon Jeongguk. Really annoying.” “Oh really? Then…” Jeongguk quips and pulls away from him, only for Taehyung to whine and latch onto him in a quick hop.
“Fucking annoying. Don’t do that again.”
“Hmm yes boss.”
“Kiss me on the lips.”
Jeongguk looks at Taehyung with false concern and answers, “Are you sure you want to go to that so fast? And we shouldn’t do it here in public.” “There’s nobody around and that wasn’t a question you—” Taehyung abruptly squeaks as Jeongguk tilts his head, lips locking onto Taehyung’s.
Second time. Jackpot.

Wonderstruck || grcysoniisms
Belladonna was a woman that her mother would describe as "born and bred for greatness". Which was her mother's way of saying that she had raised her to marry a wealthy man so that she could use her daughter as a means of becoming queen. Her mother was never very lucky in acquiring her own crown, she was never even lucky enough to draw the eye of a man who had his own crown. The only person she ever caught the attention of was belladonna's father, a sailor with a big red beard and happy green eyes, a man with a hearty laugh and little to no money. Belladonna remembered very little of her father, she remember that he was kind to her and that he loved her, and she remembered that he had died in a house fire when she was barely 6 years old. She wondered if he would be happy with the way her life is turned out, if you would be proud of her for becoming queen of such a large kingdom. Would he be ashamed? Will he be ashamed of the way his wife had raised her? Would he be upset that belladonna was not truly happy? Didn't even really matter? He wasn't here anymore.
Bella's mother was heartless and cold, she cared only for wealth and power, for title and status. Belladonna was what she liked to call, her mother's little monster", a means to an end, a way to get what she wanted. Her mother used their marriage is a way to get close to the king, to become one of his advisers so that she could try to swing him in any which direction. Her mother had one said to her "The king may be the head of the castle but I am the neck and I may turn the head which ever way I please". That had made her unhappy, uncomfortable, but nothing about it surprised her. Her mother had never even thought of her more than she had the idea of power, because if it belladonna had grown up alone, friendless and hopeless. She was darkness in human form, she was damage and tragedy with ice eyes and raven hair, she was a beautiful package to an empty box.
The thought of her mother and father left her mind that she heard a knock on her door, looking up from the bathtub where she sat in water that had become cold. "My lady, the King has summoned you. He wishes you to meet his newest advisor, the man who is supposed to live here at the castle" her handmaiden called to her through the door, making belladonna Sigh deeply. Bella hated meeting those of the Royal counsel, they were all the same. They were all men almost older than her husband, all stuffy and proper and conservative, none of them knew anything about really taking care of their people or really living their lives. They cared only of numbers and money and war. This was not the sort of life belladonna had wanted, she had wanted a life of adventure and passion and love, and that was what George promised her. But yet she lived a boring life. She knew her husband never meant any harm, he was the king after all, and you can only offer so much adventure from your home. She loved her husband, at least she thought she did. He was handsome for his age, highest title in Europe and was incredibly wealthy. He had his moments where he was kind, his moments where he seemed to truly love her, but it never felt like enough. But as far as Bella knew, that was what love felt like. More contentment than happiness. True happiness, the notions of true love and soulmate, were simply a concept for story books that were used for children to sleep at night. Such a thing could not be real.
As belladonna stood from the large bathtub, the cold water dripping down her body and making her sugar, her handmaiden came into the room with a large fluffy towel and helped her out of the tub. Build I took baths the same way every day, sitting in water that was much too hot in hopes of boiling away her shame and letting it grow ice cold and hopes that it would numb her unhappiness. As the young girl wrapped the towel around her queen, she turned around to grab a hair brush off the table and left belladonna to look at her own reflection in the floor length mirror across the room. Bella watch does a few stray hairs fell from the messy bun on top of her head to frame her elegant face, she saw the way that the towel somehow hugged her curves and made her hourglass figure look more prominent, she studied the way that she somehow seemed even more pale than she was when she married the king all those years ago, she noticed the way that her eyes were more than just ice in color but ice in emotion, nothingness.
Bella was pulled from her thoughts as the young blond girl smiled obediently up at her, holding out her robe as of offering it to her. Belladonna untied her towel and drive her self off before taking the robe and tying it around her self "I suppose I should wear the dress you bought me, shouldn't i?" she asked the young girl.
Celine nodded at her words "I believe that he would like it. The ground is level your majesty, the colors are really beautiful gold, I believe it will go lovely with your hair" the young blonde commented. Belladonna not it that she didn't care very much, she wasn't much for gold, she preferred black and purple and blood red. She always preferred dark colors, she felt most like her self when shrouded in black.
It was about a half hour later that she was finally ready, her maid having helped her tire per course it and get into her dress, adorning her ears and her neck and her fingers with jewels. She put her hair up in a simple style, leaving most of it down in her natural curls but pending if you pieces up so that she may show off her face. Her make up was light, her lips red and her lashes long. She never needed much make up, she naturally was the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, George actually preferred it when she were almost no make up. It was his way of bragging to his people that his wife was beautiful without the enhancements of make up. Celine smiled at her in the Mira she adjusted a few curls on top of her head, a knock at the door sounding before it opened and her other lady in waiting, a short girl with red hair named Elizabeth coming in with a smile on her face, her freckles obvious against her green eyes "his Majesty is calling for you again" she said almost pleasantly. Belladonna Believe both of these girls to be very kind, but they were both always in too good of a mood for her pleasure.
"Impatient as always" she said, standing from her vanity mirror before leaving the room, the two young girls in tow. She walks down the halls of the stone Corredor's, unaware of how much her life was about to change. She walked across the castle towards the war room, with the king met with his advisers every time they were to make a plan about what to do with their kingdom. Belladonna wondered why she was never invited to such a thing was she not also a ruler? Was she not smart enough to know what to do in the situations? Or was it simply because she was a woman? She knew how to play the game of war quite well, though she did not play in the war of men, she played in the war of hearts. And she had one, was she not the lonely girl with no money to her name who was married to a king? She was better the game of war than any man in this castle.
Belladonna stopped outside the war room, watching a Celine knocked on the door before opening it up, the two girls leading her inside. She looked at the room full of stuffy older man, feeling The boredom seep so deeply inside of her she was sure that it was mixing with her blood inside her veins. Belladonna looked up at her husband instantly, a small smile on her face as Celine stood beside her and began to introduce her to the newest visor, a man who was standing beside the king.
"I present to you, her Majesty and Royal highness, queen belladonna, Lady of Scandinavia and ruler of France and England, empress of Spain, wife of King George and mother of our country" she said almost as if she had it memorized. She was getting better at learning the order of the title, even Bella could not remember it all herself. She finally looked up to the face of the new ambassador, feeling her heart stopped in her chest. She had expected him to be an older man, much like those of the others. Every other man in the room was at least in his 50s, old and worn out, uncaring and boring. But this man, this young and virile looking man, He was another story. He had eyes as black as night and hair and a beard that match, his clothes were expensive and almost look like George had designed them. His face was pale and handsome, his features chiseled and manly. Belladonna felt a strange feeling inside of her, almost like something was being extra Hursel the way the ink across the page would create a permanent mark. Suddenly her eyes that were once empty and emotionless filled with emotion that even she did not understand, a strange warm and tingling feeling growing in the pit of her stomach and spreading throughout her entire body, calming the cold that had filled her all the way to her fingertips and making her feel warm to the point that her cheeks trying to paint. Just looking at him felt different beyond anything should ever felt for her husband, just looking at him made the emptiness in her eyes turn bright and full of life. Suddenly the dark sky held stars, send me the moon came out from behind the clouds and suddenly belladonna's world help light again. She didn't understand, she knew nothing in that moment but the look of the stranger and the way that they looked at each other, and even for a moment she forgot her husband and all of the others in the room who seemed oblivious to belladonna as her world shifted into a new plane of existence. She had to know him, she had to know his name and hear his voice has it wrapped around the syllables of her own name, she had to know his face for even just a moment longer. She believed in that moment that if she could survive the rest of her life, that she would do it simply by looking at his face for a moment longer and keeping it in her mind to look upon whenever she believed she could not make it until death. In that moment, the stranger who stood in a room full of nobles and servants alike, became the only thing that made her feel as if she could finally breathe again after years of holding her breath.
"Good afternoon my Lord" she breathed Ballin your head properly, though she almost looked shocked. She looked.....wonderstruck.
