uagh i hate that most of the arthropod stuff around where i live is discussed in facebook, there is nowhere i can go to try and get a millipede i- abhasbahbhabs
anyways even on facebook i haven't been able to get a millipede, wish me luck 👍
(i'm also trying to find a good breader yknow? but even talking to people who breed other kinds of arthropods [which was a pain to get the contacts, i literally talked to staff of the zoo in here to get that] it's been impossible)

you like tarantulas, right? could you get a tarantula?
Unfortunately, no. The climate here is too cold for them and they require a very particular diet of live bugs which isn't something I could easily manage since there isn't a pet shop within close access of my house. Most tarantula keepers have a whole bunch of them and will just start a food colony, which is well and good but keeping a single tarantula means either a lot of food waste and extra expense + maintenance (in keeping a colony of food bugs that you 90% aren't going to be feeding your animal) or driving an hour and a half weekly which is... a lot.

I am somewhat happy that jumping spiders are becoming popular as pets and even people who normally don't like spiders seem to find them cute, but people have GOT to stop acting like they are miniature mammals who want love and affection and pets and want to hang out with you.
I have seen countless posts in jumper groups from people asking why their jumper tries to escape when they're holding it or seems skittish or threat poses at them. It's because you are a giant predator and they want to get away from you. They don't get any happy chemicals from handling like mammals would.
I'm starting to see this in millipede groups as well. "Why is my millipede secreting this liquid on me?" Because it does not want to be handled. It's stressful for the animal, and stress can kill them.
Not only does it stress them, but often taking them out of their enclosure is dangerous for them - I have seen a lot of posts from people whose spider escaped and was injured or was crushed in the door of the enclosure because they were taking it in and out frequently. Drops can also be harmful, especially for larger invertebrates like tarantulas and bigger millipedes.
In general, invertebrate pets are not going to be a good option if you want to handle something frequently. There are definitely some species and individuals who tolerate it more, and if you're an experienced keeper, you can learn the signs of a stressed animal and only handle ones that are chill about it. But the majority of the time, they should be left alone and observed only.

"what if i turned my mutuals' sonas into bolur creatures"
so i did turn my mutuals' sonas into bolur creatures. and.... im sorry in advance.
Tumblr media
@wakebymoonsleepbysun
The creature the most related to the homo mousike: the waeki, the zebraelf equivalent to an old world monkey, and looking quite the part. Sorry, I King Julien'd you, it was the only way. The digits on the hand aren't as flexible as they are in zebraelves and the limbs are more evenly spaced - no hexapodality, but very stable chameleon-like walking across trees and land coral. The waeki is one of the oldest members of their order, the trendsetters of velvet worm-style Goop Shooters and the flexible shoulders and wrists. The mane, though, is a waeki special.
Tumblr media
@artastic-friend
Portmanteau of March and babirusa, inspired by how that horn grows! Instead of horns, instead of antlers, that head protrusion are two teeth that grew up and out of the top of the mouth into a giant, 2-pronged tusk instead of a normal tooth. Because, yknow, who wants a regular old tooth like that? Everyone's done that already. The hooves make them a part of the same order as Debu, though the mountain cows are a bit more removed. Instead of just a long pupil, the whole eye is long, too.
Tumblr media
@thebookowal
Sorry, it gets weird from here on out. The task was making a skeleton be a fully fledged critter, and the normal route I would've gone was making your sona into a bug since bugs have external skeletons. But for some reason, I could not tell you why, I had the compulsion to make you be able to roll up or compact yourself. To do it horizontally though, bah, armadillos, isopods, millipedes, they already do that. I wanted vertical compaction.
So, those are not ribs sicking out the sides - those are the claws of the 2nd limb of this hexapod. When threatened, the buk'wal flips over and on its back with its belly exposed. If a predator makes the foolish mistake of trying to take advantage of its exposed belly (either by trying to pet it or eat it), the buk'wall snaps its claws together in a bear-trap fashion, nabbing whatever poor fool tried to touch it.
Tumblr media
@lyman-garfiel
This is more like a revamping of a pre-existing idea, but Scarab The God Auditor from Fionna and Cake is new.
There was supposed to be more bugs in here, so I guess i'm just hitting double with these two. The lionfleas and omen work together the same way wolves and corvids do: the omen are expert spotters but lionfleas are expert hunters, as they are the only predator of Debu. Omen lead the lionfleas to lone debu (which is how they got their name), and the lionfleas pounce on, holding on with their two raptorial claws and raking the bare flesh with their legs. Debu don't actually have very thick skin at all, and lionfleas are more than capable to inflict lots of damage extremely quickly.
Tumblr media
this is literally just scarab. Scarab is just very easy to bolur-ize, i guess.
Bonus: The original bolur creature concept for wakey.
Tumblr media
Okay. I can't turn your sona into "the freaky blood pony that people think is going to hell and everyone wants to eat" and expect a good reaction. That's not how this works. This one was literally too weird but the lore fascinated me to the point this might just stay as an unaffiliated creature. It got weird because I tried to make the bun into a flower in the back of the head, i wondered what to make the nectar... I ruined it.
The hellion is named for both the blood constantly dripping down its head and the bloodwasps it brings - Debu believe that there is no afterlife for the animal as its' head seems to be compromised, and the sting of the bloodwasps it harbors is excruciatingly painful, with stories of its attacks on predators sending them to jump off cliffs from the pain. The hellion lives in symbiosis with the bloodwasps - its blood is exceptionally high in sugar and the bloodwasps lap it up from an non-painful opening in the back of its head in exchange for protecting their host. They live in the long hairs of its backmost limbs and when threatened, the hellion shakes its back limbs to spur them into action, which is often desperately needed.
I cannot stress that the hellion is delicious. The high blood sugar makes it the sweetest meat you could taste. Even in bolur's modern era, the meat is insanely expensive because it's also extremely hard to harvest. Handling hellion is, however, hell. The bloodwasps are not able to be removed from the equation, their saliva keeps the hellion alive by making it able to withstand the hardening of its blood vessels. The best that has been able to be done is socializing the hellion and its bloodwasp bodyguards around homo mousike, who offer sugar water in return for harvesting some of its blood.
Anyways, if I didn't draw you, don't fret, I'll probably do it sometime later :>

I’ve seen you wear gloves when handling some of your bugs, do you need to do that for all species, or just some of them?
Oh I wear gloves for a few reasons
Dirt/sensory issues, some days I just can't handle getting soil on my hands or under my nails. That's the main reason.
It's a lot easier to "peel" the larger millipedes off my hands because the gloves are hard for them to get a good grip on me, it also stops them nibbling me. The giants can be pretty hard to get off without me worrying I'm gonna pull a leg off or hurt them.
It prevents my hands getting stained if I need to pick one up and they REALLY doesn't want to be picked up. I had a few in the past that would stain a lot when handled even a little bit.
Sometimes if I've been working with resin or have been cleaning with chemicals I just want to be extra sure I'm not passing it onto them even if I have washed my hands carefully after.
I personally don't know any millipedes that you can legally get as pets that you need gloves to handle. But as general animal care you ALWAYS wash your hands before and after handling insects, also be careful not to leave any soap residue on your hands before handling them.

FAQ:
• Can you identify this bug?
send a submission to @crawlingkind, my bug ID blog! make sure to include the location, if possible.
• What’s your favorite _____?
it’s very hard for me to pick favorites out of any level of classification lower than family or order. if you get too specific I’ll have to just post a bunch of photos of taxa I really like and then I end up wasting time gathering those so don’t make me do that. my favorite animals are centipedes, though.
• What animals do you keep?
mainly centipedes, amblypygi, harvestmen, isopods, cockroaches, and darkling beetles/mealworms. I have experience with millipedes, vinegaroons, tarantulas, mantises, and most other commonly kept invertebrate taxa and many uncommonly kept ones.
• I want this bug as a pet! How do I take care of it?
please do your research before thinking about getting a pet invertebrate. they are definitely not pets for everyone since many of them don't do much of anything and do not want to interact with you. additionally, many invertebrates available as exotic pets are wild caught unsustainably instead of being captive bred, which both damages wild populations and often leads to unhealthy or dead pets. if you've done your research and have some specific care questions, I'm more than happy to answer, though!
• What’s your photography setup?
I use my phone for video and a lot of my photos. I’ve got little cheap clip on lenses that fit over the phone camera and help a ton with getting quick photos of bugs. for camera photography, I use the Olympus OMD EM-10 mk IV, with Venus Laowa 50mm Ultra Macro c-dreamer lens, Godox TT350 flash, and AK diffuser. Raynox DCR 250 used for higher magnification

Cw bug!: Vinegaroon (video!)
(Rude comments will be deleted!)
I talk in this, so just don’t have your volume maxed out lmao
You guys wanted more of her, so! Here’s a quick vid with Atlas, where I talk about the main reasons why Vinegaroons are lovely despite their crazy appearance! ✨🖤
Some things I didn’t touch on!
I said Atlas can’t pinch, but those diggers she’s got out front, are still pokey and sharp
If you grabbed a Vinegaroon, vs letting it crawl onto you, and put your finger near those, it’d probably still hurt sdjgj
Baby vinnies can move faster than adults, and need some time to get used to handling! (Also female Vinegaroons can live up to 20 years, it’s a commitment!)
Vinnies eat bugs and only bugs <:] so if you’re not comfortable with feeding bugs to a pet, I’d recommend a neat herbivore, like a millipede. 💚
Thanks for watching me be a geek! Voice reveal lol ✨

Does anyone want to hear about my pet centipede. His name is Bonesaw. He killed a millipede recently. I don’t know if he ate anything from it but he definitely near completely decapitated it (head only attached by a very thin string of tissue) and pumped it full of venom for the crime of breathing in the general direction of his pinecone. He’s so awesome and such a fucking asshole. I love him.
I wonder where the other millipede I put in his tank went. I haven’t seen it lately. The isopod is definitely alive and well and trying to get the FUCK out of there. Sorry humble dirt creature you are simply a pawn in Bonesaw’s game of Bloodsports and Domination.

Wait you should tell me (and everyone else reading this) all about your favourite bugs :] please :]
Tumblr media
HIFUDHHHHHIOOOOOUGHHHH BUGS. OUGHH BUGS. INSECTS AND SPIDERS AND ROLLIE POLLIES AND SLUGS AND SNAILS!!!
They're quite possibly my favorite types of animals on this planet. I think they're only tied with marine life, cuz I love those guys as well. Seriously, my mom nicknamed me Bug because when I was a baby, i was "as cute and snug as a bug." And then I grew up to love bugs so it FIT!! Heck my dad shared some photos of a spider and I instantly went "YOOO CATS FACE SPIDER!!" They legitimately look like they have a cartoon kitty face for an abdomen. They're such a brilliant and amazing orange, and they're just cute! They're also a type of orb weaver. And orb weavers can get HUGE
Speaking of spiders, a couple that you DO actually want in your home are wolf spiders and jumping spiders. They don't make webs, they're often born outside so they're capable of just being let out, and they'll just eat the bugs and pests in your home and leave. I am not kidding, I have never seen a jumping spider stay in one person's house longer than three days.
Rollie pollies (or pill bugs, potato bugs, isopods) are actually crustaceans. Rrlated more to crabs and lobsters. Have ya ever heard of the giant isopod in the deep? Yeah! THEY'RE COOL HUH? They're also neat little scavengers and will eat almost anything, especially dead and rotting leaves and plants. Mostly those. They also live in large families and hibernate.
Dragonflies are just cool. I love calling them helicopters cuz they are just that. Being able to zip up and down and backwards and forwards and hover. They're also predators, meaning they hunt other bugs. And the bigger ones have quite a bite. Ask me, the local bug handler, how I know that bfiejdj
I don't have much info on millipedes and centipedes. They're just cool. Though you've got to be careful when handling centipedes. Those things are venomous, and some can even deliver a VERY nasty bite. I haven't been bitten by one that's dangerous to humans, but yeah. They've got a strong bite.
Speaking of strong bites, or pincers, I STILL CAN AND WILL DEFEND EARWIGS. They are COOL. They have a PINCER on their BUTT. I have seen albino ones where they're just pure white. Yeah they can get a bit stinky but thats also pretty cool imo (says the one who spent hours hunting for bugs fiejdjw). They don't crawl in your ears at all. I'm sure if they were called something different, they'd be less hated. Also cockroaches are neat, fite me.
Pelican spiders is quite possibly the most ridiculous spider I have ever seen. And I've seen ogre-faced orb weavers and those spiders with smiles on their abdomen. They're a more ancient species of spider where their long fangs are used more as an assassin thing. Pretty cool right? Man that spider can PELICAN. (Seriously look these guys up I love them SO MUCH)
Deaths head hawkmoths are probably my favorite moths. They're pretty big and can squeak (did you know that certain bugs, such as moths and beetles, can squeak? Yeah! Moths do it by pushing air out their proboscus and the beetles that squeak have large mandibles). Deaths head moths have a skull-like pattern on their thorax and they're just GORGEOUS. I love them. Also look up rosy maple moths! I love moths!
Honeybees are pretty docile and can be picked up and even pet. I've pet a few bees. Also wasps are cool. They're just gorgeous to me. A lot of the time, just leave em be. Hold still while they're around you, don't be afraid of them, and they'll buzz off. Yellow jackets do this anyway. They don't really hunt humans unless you did something to their hive
Anyways I'm. I've done a lot of bug facts. Have fun with these!!

favorite season: Spring or early Fall
favorite scent: Anything warm and savory. Think perfumes like By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela, or similarly Jazz Club. Woodsmoke and fresh wood like cedar or oak. Bourbon. Tobacco, such as what's in a decent-quality cigar. Leather. Vanilla.
favorite color: lately I've become fond of purple? For noooo reason. 😇💜 In all seriousness, black is probably the normal answer to this question.
favorite animal: millipedes! The normal-sounding answer is cats or foxes, though.
favorite fictional characters: MEGATRON.. 🤤👅 I also love Aku from Samurai Jack, Gargamel from the Smurfs, HIM from the PowerPuff Girls, Plankton from SpongeBob, Meta Knight from Kirby, Escargoon from Kirby, and similar. Sensing a trend here?
normal amount of sleep: 8-12 hrs
coffee, tea, or hot chocolate: Coffee all the way, bitch. Tea, only if it's iced and sweet, southern style. Hot chocolate is my last choice.
number of blankets you sleep with: 2
dogs or cats: I love both, but I definitely prefer cats! Less stinky to pet... and you don't have to walk them.
dream trip: I'd love to go see Rammstein! They seldom come to the States, so I'm sure I'd have to fly to them.
dream job: Used to be "cartoonist" but I realized now that I'd rather not do my hobby for a job. So honestly? Probably just a highly paid accountant. I plan to go back to school for it... eventually.
reason for my URL: 😏Hatred Will Prevail (Monolith Remix) - Fear Factory
favorite style to write: I love angst! Particularly romantic or emotional angst! Sometimes... to my detriment because I may feel a muted version of what my muses do, at times. 😅 And my guys get SAD as fuck.
random fact: I may claim metal as my fav. genre but I actually love softer shit sometimes too, ok. 🥺 I contain multitudes... ( ex. the song I have on rn while writing this is Never Too Much - Luther Vandross )

pasting a thread i made on tw*tt*r about isopods (and then accidentally posted to my side tumblr LOL)
initially I wanted pet millipedes, but after doing research I found out that they rarely breed in captivity. I switched to isopods because I read they were easier to care for, hardier, and most species Breed
now I have 9 different isopod cultures. It's been about a year since I started the hobby and overall I have to say I highly recommend it. It's really fun seeing them multiple in numbers lol...I get especially excited when I see the babies (usually piled around food scraps)
I'm due to upgrade about half of my colonies to larger bins. I'm not sure what I'll do within a years time from now, but I think I'll eventually start selling them. There's also a bug museum that I might wish to gift some species to, though idk if they take live bugs!
I actually purchased my dairy cows from that bug museum, about 25 for $15. now I have over a hundred LOL !!! I'd love to contribute some panda kings as I believe they didn't have any in their collection.

No need to ID this lovely gentlemen I just wanted to show him to you and thank you for your great work on this blog. I’ve been using it as part of my plan to help me get over my fear of bugs. When I visited the Houston museum of science last month a worker had this funky guy out to meet guests and I was actually able to work up the courage to give the millipede a little pet. It felt way different to how I thought it would feel and I’m really glad I was able to do it.
Looks like like a beautiful giant African millipede! I'm so glad you're working on your fear of bugs and were able to touch this fine fella :)
