I realized making a single crochet swatch for practice that I fucked up bad, and honestly... it doesn't bother me anymore? It's so important to remember all of this when you do mess up, inevitably, and what brings me comfort is knowing that I am not the first to have messed up royally when doing row two of a swatch. I'm not the first person to lose a stitch or to be mad at my yarn-holding hand for fucking up the tension again, and all of this brings me immense comfort. I am learning so much, I am being vulnerable, I am letting thousands of years of human history wash over me like a gentle wave, and I am glad for it.
Tumblr media
I'll continue carrying my little fuck up, and I'm glad to know I was never the only one to do it.
The most fulfilling thing about art (and why I'm so passionate about it as a concept) is just knowing that this is a piece of you entering this world and being born, and it's as imperfect, messy, and human as you are.
Like, this is my first single crochet, and look at it!
Tumblr media
It's lumpy and not even whatsoever, but that came out of my hands. It is, essentially, not unlike a toddler who has just learned to walk with uneasy legs. Would you punish a toddler for toddling, for being unsteady and unrefined? Then why is it that we must punish ourselves for being in what is essentially that same state? Create, even if you cannot run with it. You can still walk with it. You can still crawl with it. But, create

Yarn Log - Mini Hyperbolic Paraboloid
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background & Thoughts
After my experience doing the coaster in a single day, I again felt like doing just a tiny crochet project that I could speed through. I’ve always wanted to do one of the hyperbolic plane curly guys, but searching on Ravelry only turned up paid patterns or ones that were technically hosted on other sites. The app on my phone I use to actually hold the patterns I’m working on (knitCompanion) can only automatically import free Ravelry downloads, so I opted for this instead.
A hyperbolic paraboloid is the mathematical name for the kind of saddle shaped surface that you may recognize as the Pringles shape. As a former math major I think they’re pretty cool, and it seemed like a good substitute for the actual hyperbolic plane I was searching for. Plus, it was a really small project, so I could once again bang it out start to finish in a single day.
Once again, I used my 4.25mm crochet hook, but this time I used the medium weight yarn I had left over from The Blanket™ (post still incoming! I just am queuing up a few smaller yarn logs in the mean time lol). The only new maneuver in the pattern was the sc2tog, which was pretty easy to google and execute.
Tumblr media
Something you may notice in the above picture is that my result barely resembles the target shape lol. I can think of a few explanations for this, all relating to yarn tension:
I generally messed up the yarn tension, which I already know I need to work on (see yesterday’s coaster post)
I improperly handled the sc2tog’s as the mirror reverse of the doubled-up sc stitches (to increase the stitch count back up on the latter half). This may have caused the weird curling
What is certainly clear though, is that I used the wrong size of crochet hook. Looking at another small roll of the same yarn in a different color that I’ve yet to take off the packaging for, it recommends using a 5mm crochet hook for the medium weight yarn. This means that using the hook itself to measure my gauge as I was working resulted in it being too tight, which also likely combined with the sc2tog and general yarn tension issues to produce this outcome.
UPDATE ON LAST POINT SINCE I FIRST DRAFTED THIS: I did it again with the yarn I used for the coaster (which seemed the right weight for the hook size), and the shape is still bogus. So while I still think the hook size was an issue, at this point I think either it’s a flaw in the pattern itself, or the same general tension issue from the tiny swatch I made with the coaster. Not including a pic of that, bc it’s basically the same just slightly smaller and purple.
Since this piece is not meant to lie flat, I am unable to block it into a better shape. So I’m just accepting it as it is lol
Major lessons learned:
I need to continue working on my yarn tension problems before working on a bigger project. My hyperfixation-specific perfectionism-triggered affective disorder would easily undermine any triumphs I’d make if the tension is messed up on a project I care more about, and I don’t want to set myself up for avoidable depression lol.
I need to obtain a more complete set of crochet needles. I have a good set of smaller ones, but after my bookmark experience, no way in hell will I be using the tiny-ass weighted yarn that would be appropriate for those. This 4.25mm is what I carry in my active projects bag to handle mistakes and to fasten the outside tail of when I make center-pull yarn balls. It worked with the yarn weight I used yesterday for the coaster, but I don’t have a lot left of that kind. My next hook size up is 6.5mm, for heftier yarn weights. So if I want to be crocheting with the yarn weights I commonly have on hand, I really am gonna have to invest in different sizes. Bleh, money. I have since made the purchase and am waiting for it to arrive.
Sometimes it seems, pattern makers will not tell you explicitly to do the turning stitch when going to the next row. This hasn't really been an issue for me since, due to me working in a spiral ever since then, but I have gotten a lot more observant about stitch counts when reading patterns.

Lantern!Marinette 2
Ao3 *** Part 1 *** Here *** Part 3
~~~~~~~~~~
Okay so I didn't touch Mari's parents before so here it is.
Simple explanation the magic that flows from Adana erased Mari's existence because she was so young. However those that loved her, that she loved, or who were impactful our Mari's life will remember her as a dream or imaginary friend respectively. If or when they meet her again it would be 'I know you from some where, but I don't know from where.'
In all intense and purposes Mari is a ghost.
So with that said here we go.
---
So here she was starting middle school in Coast City. It was actually not half bad. same there was nothing about the intergalactic wars, the policies that set the Green Lanterns as the Galactic Police force or any history she learned from the Blues. This actually made her dangerously behind in Earth history, but Marinette was always a quick study. Her English, math, science, and art were amazing and her physical capabilities made her a star athlete. Only downside was making friends, like seriously everyone stayed in groups of two. Add to the fact she knew little of Earth culture and customs, made it hard to interact with others outside of class work. All in all she was shy.
Whenever a villain would attack and she was able to assist she would, but she made sure she was not seen and only boosted her dad's powers while healing injuries before they could be noticed. This only lasted about a little over a year.
She knew better than to call dad when she knew that he was in a meeting with the JLA, but it was kinda hard to ignore the yellow blur running through the city causing havoc.
"What's wrong?" He answered on the second call, murmurs were heard in the background.
"There's a speedster in yellow tearing up and down the city." she responded simply.
"Can you see..."
"Crap!" was shouted on the other end "Got to go. Reverse got out." Someone yelled but she didn't recognize the voice.
"I'll go with you," dad sighed. "He is in Coast." was the last thing she heard before dad ended the call. She took that to mean she should transform and help minimize the damage and keep an eye out.
Not even 10 minutes later she saw a red blur followed by her dad's green one. (They were held up by a nosy Bat who couldn’t help himself because someone cough*Superman*cough decided to eavesdrop on the call.) She updated him, and he repeated it, to who she now recognizes as the Flash, and they got to work.
It didn't take them long to defeat the Reverse Flash, but here is where they ran into a problem. Coast was equipped to deal with most metas but speedsters that got their power from the speed force were different, and by that they meant difficult.
"I have an idea." She piped up through to her dad’s comms.
"Come on over and share with the group." She landed not even a minute later spooking the Flash. "What's the idea."
"Am I not supposed to ask who this is?" Was asked by Flash, but he was completely ignored.
"So you know how the speed force allows speedsters to vibrate which allows them to pass trough matter, which is why transporting and containing speedsters are so difficult." She began to explain.
"Um..." Dad seemed completely lost. This was something she learned with the Blues in order to understand for when she would eventually come back to Earth.
"How do you..?" Flash seemed to look at her as if she just grew a second head and was suddenly very dangerous.
"Well if we create a double construct that infuses both frequencies of the spectrum" Marinette continued.
"It'll stop him from escaping since it would be two simultaneous frequencies working in tandem occupying the same space and speedsters can only vibrate at one at a given time." Flash caught onto her idea.
"Exactly!" she beamed.
"Alright let's try." Dad agreed once he fully understood.
They tested a small square and tightly wove several strands of energy until a swatch was big enough and tightly worn enough was created. They continued to expand it until Reverse Flash was in a bubble, which they proceeded to fly to Star City. After dropping off Reverse Flash, the actual Flash practically dragged the two lanterns to his home.
"Okay Jordan spill." Flash was now in civilian clothes, dad crossed his arms and huffed dropping his transformation and she followed suit, slightly hiding behind him.
"Hey Barry dinners just about ready." A woman came out of the other room. "Hey Hal want to join us?" she asked smiling and then spotted her. "Who's this?"
"Dinner would be lovely Iris," Dad replied smiling. "And this is Marinette," he pushed her forward and she gave a light wave and smile.
"Hello," was barely audible.
The woman, Iris, turned to Flash, Barry, "Dad and Wally should be here soon." As the words left her mouth the door opened and revealed a man and a teenager.
"Heya Auntie Iris, Uncle Barry, what's up Hal,” and he froze seeing her, "Um... Hi."
He was a blur until that, so speedster.
"Wally why don't you and Marinette get the table set." Iris suggested breaking the awkward silence between the two teens.
Wally led her to the kitchen, "I'll get the plates, can you do the table?"
"Sure." she answered and used the constructs of the ring to expand the table and bring over two more chairs.
"What?!" the plates began to fall from his hands, so she reacted since he didn’t seem to, catching them in another construct moving them over to the table. "Your a blue lantern!"
"Yeah, and you're a speedster." she shot him a smile. After that dinner was significantly less awkward, seeing as everyone knew or was a hero, and was filled with questions and lots of laughter, mainly getting to know her.
"In all seriousness you might want to keep her away from the Bat." Barry joked.
"Bats isn't getting Bluebell. Hell if today hadn't happened you wouldn't have known about her." Dad grumbled.
"Why should I stay away from a bat, I thought they were harmless to humans, or are you talking about a bat used for sports?" She was genuinely confused.
"Bats is a nickname for Batman a vigilante from Gotham. He a few years ago took in a ward." A soft ‘Oh’ was heard from her, but Barry continued "So, when are you going to introduce her to the rest of the League."
"I won’t if I can help it."
"But we knew this would happen sooner or later." she piped in.
"Yes but you've only been on Earth a year."
"You kept her from us for a year. Good job Jordan." Barry complimented.
"Year and a half actually, but better now than during something cataclysmic." she rationalized.
"That's true." Dad paused a moment before exclaiming, "I see what your doing little lady." A mock scowl on his face.
---
That was her first friendship she made. Wally would randomly come over for the week end. She found out about a month later that it was whenever he needed a breather from his teammates.
That in turn meant that she would know quite well the inner workings of the team as he knew she could keep it a secret. When in private he would use (in the beginning at least) Robin, Artemis, Aqualad, Superboy, and Miss Martian otherwise he he ended up using pokemon names to describe them while in public. He had taken it upon himself to help her understand Earth culture and that mainly revolved around playing a lot of video games,watching movies or tv, or going out to various locations. Riolu, Chikorita, Croconaw, Machamp, Ditto and of late, a new teammate called Zatanna, nicknamed Kirlia. In all honesty she heard the nicknames so often that that was how she knew his teammates. It got to the point that he would call her Togetic, so in retaliation she calls him Pikachu.
^^Hi, I really wanted to do a request bc almost nobody writes about VAV and I’m glad you do! <3 I’m thinking about Lou trying to help choosing a nice outfit for a wedding and maybe asking for help back when picking a suit? 👀♥️
Thaaaaaanks ♥️♥️^^
Heyyyy, I feel you, it made me sad when I couldn’t actually find a lot of stuff about VAV and I think it was one of the lots of things that motivated me to finally get on this train.
So this is my first request of this kind and I really hope I did it justice. I’m sorry it took so long but I really wanted it to be perfect so I hope I at least met your expectations.
Dress code
Tumblr media
Requested by @haachiiee
Pairing: Lou x Female Reader
Genre: Fluff(?) I think, not really sure how this genre thing works.
Warnings: I think none although I may have used some swear words.
Words: 3.5k
“Come on Y/n this is the twentieth outfit you’ve tried on” Lou’s voice resonated through the changing room.
You were at the department store looking for outfits for the wedding of one of your cousins. “I’m sorry I swear this is the last one” You answered. “You’ve been saying that since ten outfits ago.” He replied giving an apologetic smile to the store employee that had been assisting you.
“Could you please remind me again why are you going? You don’t even like him, and you like his fiancée even less” He said annoyed. “I know I don’t like him, but I already told you my grandma would never let me hear the end of it if I don’t go” “And what does that have to do with me, I don’t really know your cousin…” He replied.
“First of all, be glad you don’t know my cousin. Second, you’re coming as my plus one because I might as well throw myself in front of a bus if I have to go there alone…” I said dramatically. “Besides, your cute little ass looks hot as hell on a suit” I said walking out of the changing room winking at him. “Well, How do I look?” I asked while twirling around.
Tumblr media
Full look ^^
I glanced at Lou and noticed his face getting red by the second to the point where even his ears were red. I wasn’t sure if it was about my outfit or my comment. We’ve been friends for two years and a half. I’ve always been very bold so this kind of comments are not rare between us and he usually plays along. But Lou just kept staring at me without uttering a word. “Mister, your girlfriend is talking to you” The store employee whispered while nudging him. “Ahem…No, no, she’s not… We’re not… a couple…” You decided to have a little fun with him and grab his arm. “Lou, what do you keep babbling about? Do you like my outfit? Is it too pure? Should I show more skin?” I said looking at Lou “Do you have a pair of high waisted shorts in white?” I said to the girl that’s been assisting us and winked at her to check if she would play along. “I think I have what you’re looking for plus with those legs you’re going to be the one getting married next” The employee said playing along and going back to look for them.
“Here, would you like to try them on?” She asked. I nodded and got into the changing room once again, I put on the shorts and got out. “Well, please tell me this is better because I really like them” I said giving Lou my best pout and puppy eyes. In that moment a school friend walked next to you “Y/n?” “Jay? Oh My God! How are you?” I said surprised, Jay is an old high school friend. I thought I had messed everything up when I confessed to him. We didn’t see each other after that. “I’m great Y/n. You look great on those by the way, I always liked your legs” Said Jay casually while I was a blushing mess. I can’t believe my high school crush is complimenting me. I rushed back into the changing room to put my clothes back on and hide the fact that I was blushing. “Hmph” Lou grunted and an awkward silence filled the place. “Miss, should I get you another size? Another color?” Asked the store employee trying to fill out the silence. I was about to answer but got interrupted by Lou. “No thanks, we won’t take those, we’ll take the pants, the top and the shoes.” He said really annoyed. “Are you done there baby? Remember we need to go pick my suit too”
Oh my god what’s going on? Why does Lou sound so annoyed? Is it because of Jay’s comment? It can’t be, can it? “Coming” I said as I exited the changing room. “Oh Jay, you’re still here” I gave the clothes to the store employee and Lou followed her. “Yes, I was wondering if we could go get lunch or maybe coffee?” I giggled because I was really nervous and in that moment Lou called my name. “Y/N, are you paying with cash or card?” He seemed really serious. “So he’s not paying? You know Y/N if you were dating me I’d always pay for you” Said Jay with a huge smile which made me want to punch his face.
Oh My God! Did he really just went there? What a douche! I noticed Lou getting angrier and grabbed his arm “Baby, I’ll pay with card, can you handle it? I’ve got a few things to say to Jay here” I said handing him my credit card. “ It’s ok, I’m not leaving you alone with this douche” I just nodded and prepared to rant on Jay.
“Listen here dear Jay. First of all he’s just my friend so he has no obligation to pay for my things whatsoever. Second, even if we were dating he’d still have no obligation and there’d be no need. I’ve got my own money and I can pay for my fucking things ok?. Third, If this is the real you then I’m really glad nothing happened between us in high school. Oh and one more thing, you know as a word of advice to my dear friend. Stop bragging about your money because we all know it’s your father’s.” I grabbed Lou’s hand, paid for the clothes, thanked the employee and left the store.
“Y/N, Y/N, Y/N!!!!” Lou had to shout because I wasn’t listening. “WHAT!” I shouted back. “Where are we going?” He asked a bit confused as we kept walking aimlessly. “What?” I replied noticing my hand holding his and his confused face. “Oh I’m sorry, I’m just so mad. I can’t believe I liked him. He’s such a jerk. Are you ok?” I kept rambling. “Y/n, calm down, I’m ok.” He said holding my shoulders trying to calm me down. “Are you hungry? Let’s go get some lunch.” “Yes, I’m starving.” We walked over to the food court and had lunch, while we were eating I told Lou about what happened with Jay in high school.
We had finished eating. “Now let’s go get you a suit.” We walked into a huge store that specializes on tailored suits. “Good afternoon, how may we assist you today?” One of the store employees greeted Lou a little too excited ignoring me completely. She kept fixing her hair and smiling at Lou, looking all pretty and she was starting to get on my nerves. “Yes, please we’re looking for a suit for a wedding, it’s in the afternoon and it’s on the countryside.” Said Lou and it bothered me that he was always so kind and gentlemanly. “Sure, we can pick the silhouette and after that I can show you the different fabrics and colors” We walked around the store checking the different silhouettes they offered. I chose three different ones for the jacket and ended up choosing two options for the pants. Now Lou has to try them on so we can pick the best fit.
While Lou was getting dressed I was about to approach the store employee to ask for the swatches as I heard her talking to another employee. “Oh My God! That guy’s so hot” Said the other one. “I know right, I don’t know what a guy like that is doing with a girl like that. I mean she’s not ugly, but I’m a much better match for him.”
I felt enraged and I just wanted to pull her hair and fight her. Am I angry because she thinks she’s better than me or am I jealous? Dear Lord save me or rather save her from me because this I’m feeling is pure and raw jealousy. I cleared my throat to let them know I was there. “Hi, again. Could you please let me look at the fabric and color swatches. I’ll pick a few while he’s trying the suits on.” She was as pale as the snow. “S-sure, anything else? Would you like some water or some coffee?” “Can you get me some tea? Thanks, I’ll be sitting right there” I said pointing to the couch that was in front of the changing rooms.
“How do I look?” Asked Lou opening the door of the changing room. “Can you turn around?” He did as told “Nope, I don’t like it, please try it with the other pair of pants. Next.” He went back to change and came out again. He had put on the other pair of pants as I asked and tried a double breasted jacket this time. “Can you take the jacket off?” As he did I saw out of the corner of my eye the employee coming back with the swatches so I told him to turn around. “Baby, could you please turn around?” Dear Lord, why do you hate me so much? Why is he so handsome and why does that ass look so good on those pants? I don’t know how but in a matter of seconds my brain had decided it was a good idea to get up and smack his ass. When I sat back down I didn’t know whose face was redder, Lou’s or mine. He got back into the changing room as fast as he could. I just sank on the couch trying to hide myself unsuccesfully. I noticed the store employee was back with the swatches and my tea, and had seen everything. I buried myself into the swatch books and asked Lou to try the next jacket with the same pair of pants.
I was drinking my tea and I almost spit it out when I saw Lou come out of the changing room wearing the last outfit. “Well, how do I look?” I took a deep breath and asked the mighty Lord why he kept on testing me. Then answered switching back to bold me. “Lord forgive me for I have sinned thinking about all the things I could do to him” I said while looking dramatically to the roof before breaking into laughter. “Don’t mess with me Y/n” He said trying to sound serious so his deep voice mode was on getting me weak on the knees. If only he knew my comment wasn’t a joke. “Would you like to check the fabrics and colors so you can pick one?” She said while batting her eyelashes and grabbing Lou’s hand before handing him the books. Oh my god she’s flirting with him! OMFG! This is war. “Babe, I already picked a fabric and a color, they match with my clothes and I know that color suits you very well.” “You should have other options to choose from.” Said the employee playing innocent. I swear the nerve of this girl is making me furious. “There’s no need to, I trust Y/n” Said Lou looking dead serious at the employee and then turning to give me a little smile. “I see… So which fabric in which color? As soon as you tell us we’ll bring it out so you can confirm it’s what you want.” “We’ll have the cotton silk blend in Prussian Blue” She just nodded and went to get the fabric.
”What on earth is Prussian Blue?” Asked Lou. “Oh, it’s this beautiful shade of blue. Don’t worry it will look great on you, it’s going to make your skin tone pop.” I said confident in my choice. “By the way, who did you tell your family you’re going with?” He asked with worried eyes. “Oh I told them I was going with my boyfriend” “Oh, okay” He said while scratching the back of his neck. Then it dawned on him. “Wait, what?” He asked, shock written all over his face. “Yes, they asked who I was going with and I told them I was going with my boy friend. You know my friend who happens to be a boy.” I said trying not to laugh at his reaction. “I swear I’m going to kill you Y/n, how could you do that to me?” He said and I noticed he wasn’t joking. “Wow, I’m sorry I didn’t know the idea dating me was such a horrible thing. God” I said kind of sad because I didn’t know the idea of dating me would bother him so much. “Here it is” Said the employee who was back with the fabric. “Excuse me, this is not what we asked for.” I said completely annoyed this time. “Yes it is. You asked for the cotton silk blend in blue.” She said talking back to me and I wasn’t about to accept that.
“So not only have you been flirting with my friend, your CLIENT, since we arrived. But because of it, you failed to pay attention to me when I asked for a particular shade of blue. And on top of that you dare talk back to me as if it is my fault.” In that moment I was completely out of myself. I wasn’t controlling my breathing, and I was starting to hyperventilate which wasn’t good at all. “Y/n, Y/n, look at me.” Said Lou while grabbing my hands. He had never seen me like this. He obviously didn’t know what to do, so I kind of had to guide him through calming me. I kept struggling to breathe and he was just like a lost puppy who didn’t have a clue on how to help me. “Lou…” I managed to say. “What? Y/n, talk to me. What can I do?” He asked worried. “J-just keep talking to me… Y-your voice… It soothes me…” Great, so now I wasn’t just hyperventilating but I was also blushing. “M-my v-voice? Why does my voice…” “It just does!” I said and I started to struggle to breath again. “Ok, ok, Y/n look at me… Remember when we first met? What did you say to me?” “That that you were…” I said struggling to get the words out of my mouth.
“That I was your new friend, right? You didn’t even let me have a say in the matter, it was like when you’re in your first day of kindergarten and you just pick another kid, say this is my new friend and suddenly you’re friends without knowing anything about each other at all. At first I was baffled, I couldn’t conceive a full grown adult picking a friend like a little kid.” I was starting to calm down and let out a little laugh. “But then after I had spent sometime getting to know you I discovered that you not only act like a kid but you’re actually a kid, just older and taller.” He noticed I had calmed down so he asked for some water and the fabric in the correct shade of blue. “Let’s order the suit and get out of here, okay?” He said as he handed me the bottle of water. He got up to go pay and I grabbed his hand again. He looked at me, helped me get up and guided me to the the cashier. We ordered the suit, now in the right shade, and got out of the store. We kept walking in silence for a moment. “So… Can I ask why on earth does my voice soothe you?” Lou blurted out, speaking so fast that I almost don’t get what he was talking about. “Oh, come on, you already knew that I liked it.” I said shyly. “I know you LOVE my voice, because I mean who doesn’t.” He said confidently. “But you loving it and it soothing you are two different things and I want to know why.” “Well, your voice is so deep and calm it gives me calmness too. Now, if we’re done with the questions I’d like some ice cream please.”
“I still have some questions… Why did you smack my ass and said that it looks hot on suits?” I had to go back into bold mode to avoid blushing at the questions. “Are you for real? I mean what I said it’s pretty self explanatory isn’t it? Like it literally means your ass looks hot in a suit, and the smacking thing, well it’s because your ass looked so good in those pants I couldn’t resist it.” I said acting like it was nothing out of the ordinary. “Since you’ve asked me three questions already I should get three as well, right? Why did you blush when I made the comment about your ass? One would think you’re already used to my boldness and out of place comments.” “Can you ask the other two questions before I answer?” “Alrighty then. Why where you so annoyed by me wearing the pair of shorts? And would it be really that bad to date me? I mean you looked completely horrified by the idea.” I said looking down trying to hide the sadness in my eyes. “Oh fuck, is that what you think it was? I wasn’t horrified. Well I was but not because it would be bad to date you, much less if it’s pretending. I was just scared because even if it was pretend you’d still introduce me to your family as your boyfriend and your brother kind of scares me.”
I couldn’t help but laugh hysterically. “You, Lou, 187cm, 24 years, are scared of my baby brother who’s 3 years younger?” “Have you seen him? I mean of course you have. Yes, he’s as tall as me, but he’s huge. It’s as if Ziu was the same height as me. And he might be your baby brother but we both know that regarding you he takes his position as your guardian very seriously. So yes, he scares me, a lot.” “Okay, he’s a ball of fluff. Like a chihuahua, all bark and no bite, but fair enough. Now answer my other questions.” “I wasn’t annoyed by you…” He said. “Igotannoyedbecauseofwhatyourfriendwassayingandhowhewasstaringatyou” He finished and I had a really hard time trying to understand him because he didn’t even breathe while saying that. “Geez, breathe, would you? I don’t want you to die. Can I change my first question?” “Nope, I’ll answer it and then ask you some more questions. So no, I’m still not completely used to your out of place comments, much less when they involve my assets you know. Now the next one is not so much a question but an affirmation. You’re wearing my white blazer over that outfit of yours, I don’t want to have to handle drunk acquaintances all over you and we need to comply with the dress code.” “Can I fold the sleeves and take it off during the ceremony and for the pics?” Lou nodded. “Deal, what else?” I grunted.
“Why were you so mad at the store employee?” “Did you seriously not notice how she was flirting with you? She was all over you, batting her eyelashes and touching your hand. Oh and she also had the nerve to say that I’m not ugly but that she’s a much better match for you. So yeah I was kinda mad you know! Besides she can’t tell Prussian and Aegean Blue apart.” Shit! I kinda admitted that I was jealous, I hope Lou didn’t notice. “Done? Can I ask now?” As he didn’t say a thing I took that as a yes. “Do you seriously think I’m a kid?” Lou was deep in thought obviously thinking carefully of an answer. “Would a kid do this?” I asked before kissing him impulsively. At first he didn’t kiss me back but then I felt his lips moving carefully. We separated and as I wasn’t ready to face him I hugged him. “You know, since we already comply with the dress code, and even got matching couple outfits and everything… Would you mind going as a real couple?” I whispered the last part. Lou broke the hug to look me in the eyes. “I wouldn’t” He said and kissed me once again.
Buying Faux Fur Swatches
What to look for when buying swatches and choosing fur.
There are lots of great resources to buy fur available online! It can be difficult to hunt fabric stores for faux fur, especially outside of fall/halloween/winter seasons. So online shopping is a way to build fursuit and costumes with fur any time of the year!
The trick to it is buying a swatch first so you know what you are getting! A swatch is a small sample of the fur fabric that the company selling the fabric will mail to you for a small fee. Swatches are usually around $1 - $5 each, don’t skimp on the swatches! For each color you plan, its smart to get a few swatches to compare. They are invaluable in terms of knowing what the color looks like in different lighting conditions, how it feels, how it moves, and how it shaves. Asking other artists opinions just isn’t the same!
Where do I get swatches?
Tumblr media
About ½ of the way down this page there is a list of fabric suppliers: https://pupdates.matrices.net/post/163394770088/fursuit-and-crafting-resources
I keep this supplier list updated as I find more!
Most Online fabric stores make it obvious how to get their samples, but some less-so. You may need to use their search, or simply ask!
Tumblr media
Some sites have swatch collections you can purchase as well, such as Big Z, it offers “color cards” which includes all the colors that type of fabric comes in!
If you are collecting samples offline (from a physical fabric store) the store might not allow swatches to be cut and you may need to buy an entire strip of the minimum cut of that fabric. Ask what the smallest amount to be cut is, it might be a few inches! Your swatch will be a strip instead, but you can cut it to a manageable size later and share the extra swatches with friends.
How do I examine a swatch?
When you buy fur, its not about “the softest” – it is literally what works best with the project you are creating. And everyone’s projects are different with different goals!
Some furs are sparse and flowy with mesh backings and those are incredibly awesome for all over a body/chest to help the wearer stay cool, while they are totally terrible for shaving. Others may be extremely thick and plush, but awful for wearing because of how heavy they are. Some feel “crispy” in your hand, but have a realistic look and are extremely durable and will look good for a long time. Some are different textures, but they are the colors you need.
Its all a careful balance of the search for the texture you want, or the color match you are after. For sure the fursuit maker’s struggle.
I like to mix textures and fur lengths because it adds interest to a costume’s design. Once I receive an order of swatches in, I examine them, take them into the sunlight and indoors light. I also match them up with existing swatches in my collection. As well as see how stretchy they are or aren’t. Then I break out my electric shaver, and see how it shaves. Sometimes it reveals a different colored undercoat, a spotted or patterned backing, or a sparse arrangement of fur, those aren’t ideal for shaving unless it works with your particular project. Definitely use a slicker brush on the shaved and unshaved portions to make sure the fur stays in the backing under normal maintenance.
Tumblr media
Determine how much stretch the fabric swatch has. This will tell you if you need to make a dart or if it will fill out on its own just by being stuffed or stretched into shape over foam. Hold a swatch of fabric you plan to use like on the Left, it can be at any angle that would match your project you are patterning. Make sure the fabric is relaxed.
Now pinch it between your fingers and stretch it apart, like on the Right. That measurement between your two fingers is the amount of stretch your fabric does or doesn’t have.
The distance you can measure is how much leeway you have to stretch your pattern to fit. If your swatch doesn’t stretch at all, or doesn’t have a stretch from the angle you are planning to put it at, you can then add a dart to your pattern.
Regarding backings, some are stretchy, some are not. Some have a smooth texture, some are different than others, and that is all completely OK. You are going to want to be wearing underarmor or athletic underclothes while wearing fullbody fur costumes like fursuits anyways, so if a backing is “scratchy” that doesn’t make that fur un-useful in any given project.
You will find a lot of the common furs made by a manufacturer called “Shannon Fabrics” they distribute it to all of the resellers. A lot of those furs are the same colors and textures, but sold under different color and texture names. Its up to the individual website on how they brand and sell them. For example “Luxury Shag” and “Punky Muppet” are the same thing.
When you are ready to buy, measure your patterns so you know how much you need. It is very easy to be tempted to overbuy, and I try to discourage it because it can be difficult to store and re-sell fur remnants. (Photographing, measuring, pricing and listing. Taking payment, then boxing and mailing. Its a very involved process) You may still end up with a bit extra (for repairs or mistakes) because online fabric stores often sell in whole or half yard increments only. More information on “How much fur do I need?” here!
Here is a summary of what you can do with a swatch of faux fur:
Think about your project goals. Is your project based in natural colors or fantasy colors? What works best for the project you are creating?
Take it into the sun and indoors to see it in different lighting conditions.
Match them against other swatches you have to compare texture, density, or length.
Check stretch (this can immensely help you when plan darts in your pattern)
Check what it looks like trimmed or shaved.
Use a slicker brush and brush it to see if it stays under normal maintenance.
See if it unravels or runs easily when you pick at the edges.
Shake it! See how that fur moves and lays.
Test it! Cut that swatch in half and use one part of it for a washing test or other test! Keep half as a “control” and test the other half!
How should I label my swatches?
When your samples arrive, they often come with the invoice that tells you what you ordered. But it is extremely easy for this invoice to get tossed or separated and the swatches kept instead, that info now lost. So labeling your swatches clearly and as soon as you get them becomes more important than ever. Here are ways you can label your swatches and information to include.
Label the month and the year you acquired it “July 2019″ -- this is important!! As dye lots can and will change over time, knowing what time period your fabric’s dye lot was created from can help. If your swatch is more than a year old, you want to know so you can get a new swatch in case the color changed!
Label the color and type that it was named where you ordered it. Examples “Mint Rabbit” “White Arctic fox” “Emerald Long Ecoshag”
Label the website name it came from. Examples “Imstuffedfur” “Mendels” “Big Z”
Label the project or character’s name you plan to use it with or have used it on in the past. This is optional, but can help sometimes it’s easier to remember “Matrices Grey” or “Bonk Mint.” Naming by project sticks more strongly in memory, especially when you come back to use that fur, or think about that swatch again!
When it comes to actually sticking a label on your swatches, you can do so by writing on the swatch in pen, stapling a small paper label to your swatch with this info, or writing it on a label sticker and sticking it to the backing!
How should I store or organize my swatches?
Storing swatches can sometimes be an afterthought. But if you plan on making lots of projects with fur, storing and organizing swatches becomes more important as more of them are collected.
Tumblr media
Here’s some creative ideas and solutions that are useful, especially if you are low on space but want to stay organized.
Attach them to cardstock with staples or double-sided tape.
Use a binder with plastic sleeve inserts to tuck them in so they can be put away on a shelf.
Use a cork board and pin them up on the board so they can be stored hanging up.
Put a small hole in each swatch, and use a metal ring or carabiner to string them together so they can be stored in a drawer or hanging up.
Clip them together with clothespins to hang them up.
Have fun with collecting, examining, and organizing swatches for your projects! Hope this helps! Happy crafting!
DIY Crochet Handbag
Have you ever gone into a store or see something on TV/ Internet and say to yourself.. I can make that!!!  Well… Thats what happened to me one day when I went shopping at Target. I was looking for a Tote to carry the yarn I’m not packing up for our move. I glance over and see this crochet handbag… Natural instinct is to immediately check this out.. kinda like quality control.. was it machine made or handmade crochet, etc hahaha I pick it up, examine it.. Wow. it wasn’t machine made.. hmmm Then I look at the price tag and gasp. Nope.. was not going to give a Big named store that amount of money.. I can make this!!
I give you.. The DIY Crochet Handbag 🙂
The Handbag at the store was a neutral colored stiff but still on the soft side,cotton material. So off I went to find yarn similar to this handbag. I found several that were close but still not the exact texture. Then a light bulb went off in my head.. off to the hardware department I went..
Waalaa.. I found it. Cotton twine. This has the same texture and thickness of the “store” handbag and bonus .. it was 2.84 a ball. I grab a couple and off I went to create the look a like.
Half way through making this handbag, I was thinking about the texture and durability of this bag, then my mind started to wander and all of a sudden I said to myself.. Tye Dye!! Wouldn’t it be cool if you could custom dye your handbag.
After I completed the pattern I went to the craft store and picked up some t-shirt tye dye.
To be perfectly honest, I have never Tye Dyed anything before and after the initial excitement of getting the dye, I started to get a little nervous. I didn’t read the directions of the dye before I purchased and when it came time to make it.. eeekkk. This particular dye was for Large projects and required some math to calculate a smaller batch of dye. I recommend if you are going to dye your handbag to read the directions of several types of dye before you purchase.
The dye I used was 1 packet per Gallon of water.. I cut that down into 3rds and still had dye left over.
I also decided to make some swatches to test dye. So glad I did. The twine doesn’t soak up the dye as I thought it would have. It was almost like water repellent at first. I lightly sprayed water on the first area I was going to dye first… This worked out much better.
I noticed you can actually get some neat effects when spray water on the already dyed area.. it make the dye move and creep up the twine. I started with the darker dye first but you can try many different techniques with your swatches before applying to your handbag.
Cautions with the dye.. this is fabric dye and it will stain anything it gets on.. use gloves and it is best to dye outside where spills will not ruin anything. It was raining here when I went to dye so I did dye inside. I have a stainless steel sink so I used a cooling rack over my sink to dye. For drying I transferred the cooling rack to a old cookie sheet pan.
  For some extra fun.. I made 2 coaster size swatches and let my husband and daughter design their own. It also gave me other ideas on how I wanted my bag to look.
When dyeing don’t worry about areas that arent covered completely with dye..the dye will spread out while drying. Also, keep in mind the color will lighting a bit also. The picture above is when the swatches and bag where wet.
Drying… Again preferably allow them to dry outside. I was late getting this post out because I didn’t not think about dry time. They barely dried while in the house. It wasnt til a day later when I could put them outside for a few hours in the sun that they finally dried. I Do Not recommend putting them in the drier.. the dye will destroy your drier.
  These pictures are of the swatches and bag fully dried. As you can see the dye faded a bit and also the areas that did not have dye filled in with color.
I added some twine to the edges of the coasters the family made. Took a wire brush and combed out the twine and made little Rug coaster. Have some extra fun with this project. This little side project made me think back to crafts we did in school.. was a nice little break away from the everyday schedule 🙂
Crochet Handbag Pattern
This bag is done in the round. It has repetitive rows. It has 2 “special” need to know stitches.. Which are a Cluster and a DC2TOG. Below are a couple links for reference on how to do the “special” stitches.
Cluster.. Mama in a Stitch ….The Cluster for my pattern is only 3DC’s
DC2TOG… New Stitch a Day
Cluster2TOG..
Round 18.) 2HDC in each previous row cluster ( not in Ch.1 space)..
Round 19.) SC around, Sl St into first SC and Finnish off.
Attaching Handles…
Depending on the type of handle you use, there is several ways to attach your Handles. On my handbag I choice 2 different ways you could attach them.
  First photo is a single sewn, center hold. Second picture I placed additional wrapping on either side. Options are limitless on how you would like to attach yours.
Attach along the whole bottom half of handle, Partial attachment, etc.. Also… Keep in mind as to whether or not you want your handle “holder” to be dye’d or Natural. If you want it to match, make sure you dye some of your extra cord.
When attaching the handle you want to use a whole cluster.. So sew from bottom of cluster, up around handle and into top of same cluster and just keep going around and across the same row of clusters,  til your happy with the hold and look.
Get creative with your bag.. this is your creation and it needs your personal touch 🙂
I hope you have fun with this DIY Handbag and Please let me know if you have any questions. Those that would like to share your finished handbag I would love to see them… You can post them here in Comments or #wulfiesessentials on instagram 🙂
Bug Girl
My WIP Wednesday! piece is all finished!   (Warning: LOOOOOOONG description about the art process ahead!  ) I don't think it's terribly obvious for a number of reasons (at least not at first), but this piece is actually a bit of fan art/inspired by How to make Friends with the Dark by Kathleen Glasgow, which I finished reading Monday night--Though I actually started this piece a couple of days before   There's a concept that gets brought up a few different times in the book of the main character Tiger imagining a "bug-girl" in a jar, usually to help visualize her emotions to us, the audience. This concept really resonates and stuck with me even before I finished the book, and thus I was compelled to draw it. Technically the way I see that concept in my head looks different from what I've done here, so sometime in the future I may take another stab at it, but for this time I wanted to strengthen the connection between the bug-girl concept and the book, so visually I modeled the overall aesthetic largely off of the book's cover; white lines and white dots on a dark blue background that has a slight gradient at the bottom. The gradient on the cover is more subtle and is more on the lines than the background itself, but I took artistic liberty on that to make my life a little easier. My original plan was to do the background with watercolor, do the lines digitally and print them out (since I had some kinks in the sketch I wanted to experiment with digitally instead of doing a lot of additional drawing and erasing) and then use my lightbox and a white gel pen to trace directly on top of the watercolor, then splatter away with some white ink. But of course, things can never be that simple. The way I see it in my head, the bug-girl has, well, bug eyes, but for this piece, I didn't want to lean too heavily into the "creepy" factor, given it doesn't really fit with the content of the book (which is a great read if you like realistically heavy YA novels, by the way) so I angled her head down and her hair covering her face to keep from having to make the decision on whether or not I wanted to go with that look. And additionally to do proper bug eyes (at least the kind I was imagining) would've involved a lot of tiny circle/cell shapes, and I imagine that would've made things feel too crowded or would have blended into the splatters/background in an uncomfortable way. Additionally, I was going to have her wings raised behind her, but after playing around with a few different references and positions in Photoshop (knowing full well I was not happy with the original wings from the sketch that I completely free-handed), I felt like this more asymmetrical, lowered position and dragonfly-type structure just looked better and fits better with some of the movements of the wings described in the book (using them to cover her eyes, etc.) which in most cases aren't technically plausible with normal bug wings. My first real problem was with the jar. Realistically, it needed to be tall enough for the girl to stand at full height at least. And in theory, probably a little bit higher so it would be more comfortable overall and so that in theory she wouldn't just stand up and be able to push the lid off. But I was having issues with the sizing because the jar could only be so big so that A. it would fit comfortably on my paper and B. if it was too tall, the empty space between the top of the jar and the girl would noticeably awkward. So I fiddled with that for way too long and ultimately, it's probably too short, but the size balanced is more comfortable to the eyes, I think. (I also added the cross-hatching to the lid to make it more obvious there was a lid since originally it just kind of looked like the jar had a very wide lip.) I also gave her a set of antennae, and after trying the concept of segmenting her whole body to be more bug-like (which was way too many lines everywhere) I decided to add some plates on the front of her forearms and calves. It's not much at all, but I didn't want to stick solely to traditionally "fairy" imagery since she's a bug-girl, not a fairy, but in this lines-only format, there was only so much I could do and still get the proper impact I was looking for. Speaking of which... I did a lot of swatching and testing of my various watercolors that I have on hand to A. get the colors I wanted right, B. practice my blending of two colors with more paint than water since I wanted very dark, opaque colors, and C. test if my lightbox would even work under the thick watercolor paper and the actual watercolor. However, I made two errors in judgment during the testing: 1. The areas I swatched to test were considerably smaller than the actual size of the area I wanted to cover and even with my biggest brush when I went to do a practice go I very quickly realized that was going to take an absurd amount of paint, time, effort, and I was very likely to run into some blending problems with the gradient. (So, in summary, half-pan-sized watercolors and mostly small brushes are not great for very large areas) 2. Once I realized the above, (and I had already done two very quick tests with alcohol markers and that idea almost immediately went out the window for the same issue) I had to switch course and ended up using some water-soluble pencils (one Arteza Woodless Watercolor Pencil for the dark blue and one Derwent Inktense pencil for the dark teal at the bottom) to lay down the color for the background and then wet them down to smooth out the color. Which turned out pretty nicely, especially once they dried. (I was a little worried at first since while still wet it was looking kind of patchy and weird ) The problem with number 2 is that after it had fully dried (aside from the paper curling pretty badly since it was in a sketchbook and I didn't think to tape the edges of the page down before taking water to it, which was mostly fixed pretty easily by wetting down the back of the page and sitting a very heavy box on it while it dried overnight) when I went to use the lightbox, the pigment from the water-soluble pencils was noticeably more opaque than the straight watercolor tests/swatched I had looked at previously. It wasn't so opaque that I couldn't see my lines underneath at all but it was opaque enough that a lot of the smaller details wear really hard to see. And thus I had a pretty big problem on my hands. What I should have done was trace the lines in black on the blank paper first so they would be more likely to show through the pigment in the first place and there's a good chance that would've fixed the problem, even if I still needed the lightbox to see those lines perfectly. But hindsight is always 20/20 so that knowledge didn't really fix the matter at hand. I knew pretty instantly that I didn't want to try tracing the lines onto another piece of watercolor paper and trying to color matter since I seem to always have majorly noticeable issues with that, especially when there's a gradient involved, and also because I knew when I scanned it in it would be fairly obviously there were two layers of paper instead of one because of how thick watercolor paper is. I also knew alcohol markers were out because, again, color matching issues with the selection available to me, and also from some of my much earlier testing with trying to get the specific gradient that I wanted. That left me with colored pencils. And thus I went through the five different sets I use enough to keep where I can easily access them (I have others I don't like as much that would've just been a waste of time) and started swatching colors on a piece of the same paper I had the lines on and then held them up to the background to color match as closely as possible. I ended up picking one dark blue and one dark teal each from both my Prismacolor and Polychromos sets since the blue from the Prismacolor was closer but the teal from the Polychromos was closer but they were both slightly off, so to keep the texture consistent I mixed both together for both colors. This ended up being a very good idea in hindsight because I finished off with a final layer of the Polychromos and that kept my white gel pen from having the problems it would normally have over straight-Prismacolor pigment. (Since Prismacolors are wax-based the wax usually clogs the pen tip very easily; the Polychromos are oil-based, so the oil created a slicker layer between the wax and the pen). And all I did was use my lightbox to see the black printed lines through the colored pencil as easily as possible and went back over them with my white Sakura Gelly Roll, then I went back and outlined the jar and the lid specifically with my white Uni-Ball Signo, since the ink is slightly brighter and the nib is larger. Once that was all done to my satisfaction, I cut out the girl in her jar and placed it on the watercolor background with some double-sided tape I picked up the day before from DollarTree, clipping a few edges so they'd be as flush with the edges of the paper as possible. And I figured that would be a better idea than glue because the glue had a very good potential of being very messy and leaving notable marks. The tape was just a safer bet. And fortunately, the paper laid pretty flat, save for a couple of spots I either missed because I applied the tape by lifting up the edges so I wouldn't totally lose my placement or up by some of the nooks and crannies that make up the ridges at the top of the jar that were just too small to do individually. And there is one spot where that tape wrinkled on me, but it's fortunately not terribly noticeable in the final product. Then I made a paper mask for the girl inside the jar and got to move on to the slightly more fun part; I dipped a paintbrush in some white ink (white ink as opposed to white watercolor because I was concerned the water part might cause some reaction to the existing watercolor background that I didn't want and I was a little concerned it would make the non-watercolor paper that the girl and the jar were drawn on warp) and started tapped it against another paint brush to get splatters everywhere. I masked the girl since I was pretty sure she'd blend in too much if she got splattered too. After the ink was dry, I removed the mask and went in with the white Gelly Roll again to make some stars here and there; mostly just because I wanted to since the original book cover only has dots. I left it at that for the night since it was almost 3 and I was tired, but I came back to it the next day and racked my brain for a bit since it felt like it was missing something. I ultimately ended up putting the mask back on the girl and used my pastel blue PanPastel to create a glow effect around her. After that, I scanned it and did make some minor adjustments in Photoshop (mostly color correction, but there were a couple of black lines of shadow around the edge of the jar since it was still a separate piece of paper on top of the other one at the end of the day. And here we are. It's still not perfection, but I am ultimately happy with it since I think I got the look I was after in the end. Plus, I think I capture the spirit of the original book cover's style pretty well ____ Artwork (c) me, MysticSparkleWings I do not own How to make Friends with the Dark or the cover art ____ Where to find me & my artwork: My Website | Commission Info + Prices | Ko-Fi | dA Print Shop | RedBubble |   Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram
Coffee with a Spider - Decided!
-fiddles with circular needles as I practice- Hmm. Okay, so, the socks are finished and I have enough yarn left over from that project that I'm most definitely going to be making something for myself from it! And what I have in mind, I'm so very excited to work on! -pulls needle through and sets the stitches again for the next half of the round- But I want to use a new technique that I haven't quite mastered... this is something I like doing, especially with self-care projects like this. Challenge myself to develop some sort of new technique. -sips coffee- Well, this is definitely a new technique for me. Normally for projects in the round with small diameters, I use double-pointed needles. But for the sake of practicality and reducing how many sets of needles I have scattered about, I wanted to learn... magic loop.
Tumblr media
It is definitely taking some getting used to for me. I'm blessed to be using a lovely set of interchangeable circular needles from ChiaoGoo, and the same yarn from the socks. So far I don't seem to have any issues with ladders or gaps (-knocks on wood-), and the biggest struggle I seem to have with this little round swatch is actually with my tension being too tight. This is an ongoing issue for me, as those who've known me for a long time can attest to. It seems no matter the project, whether it's knitting or crochet or sewing, I've got a tendency to have very even but tight tension. And I'm having to practice myself out of that with this.
BUT! Once I've got this practice swatch done to a point where I feel comfortable with magic loop, I'll be taking that leftover skein and trying my hand at some cute wrist warmers that cater to this spider's love of cables and lace! This is going to be what I work on when not working on commissions because as a friend of mine frequently tells me, I'm a yarn goblin.
Curious about my commissions? I've got one slot open, dearies, so nab that up as soon as you can! You can either PM me for details or take a look at my commissions form! Toodles!<3
For a moment I wondered why Kevin’s sections are always longer than Argit’s in this au, then I remembered that Argit’s generally have fewer people involved and less going on...
Chapter 6, now with fashion and family time.
They were a few months out from the big day and Argit was done. The constant back and forth that came with trying to plan a wedding he’d love without actually involving him in the planning, he could handle. The feeling like he was arguing with a stranger third-hand and from the other side of the galaxy, he could handle. But when his father had sent someone in to get his measurements so new clothes could be made?
As someone who’d been making his own for what felt like forever he was just not having it.
He’d finally taken control of the situation- dumping the bureaucratic work on his father’s desk with no fanfare, foisting the final stages of wedding planning onto Psyphon, cutting his siblings’ snickers down by assigning them the most menial work he could think of at the time- and given himself a job he actually enjoyed. Ever since he’d hardly left his rooms, locked away with all the fabric, sewing supplies, and inspiring pieces he could dream of. It was relaxing work, the most troubling bit was deciding what pattern to go for in the deep greys and purples he’d settled on, and was mostly working to keep his mind off just how fast time was going.
The more time he spent considering it the more nervous he got, the more he ate, the more grateful he was that he’d already adjusted his patterns to a few sizes larger than normal.
It was becoming more and more clear with time that he had no idea what he was doing or what to expect. Not only that, but that none of the people he’d have felt comfortable discussing this with had any idea either. He was going to be the first one married and the only person he knew who’d had truly serious relationships was his father, who wasn’t an option for obvious, ‘I have five kids by four women who skipped out’-shaped reasons. He didn’t know how to have a relationship, how to get to know someone, what was expected of him in a marriage. As time had gone on he’d found himself spending more and more of his free time looking up everything from Osmosians to humans to marriage advice to housing because apparently setting up a house together was a thing you were supposed to do maybe? Sorta? Kinda?
Anymore if he wasn’t working on his clothes (and his father’s clothes, and his siblings’ clothes, and Psyphon’s clothes-) he was probably on the ethernet going cross-eyed with his researching. Generally accompanied by at least one pie.
Pupating came with a lot of changes, mental and physical, ones that couldn’t be properly predicted for hybrids. There was endless variance there. Which meant not only that they hadn’t been able to do any planning involving Kevin’s looks before he broke free, but that as soon as he’d adjusted enough to the new body to stand and speak his family had converged on him like vultures on a dead buffalo.
“Dress or pants?”
 “Whichever’s cool.”
 “…we’ll get both made, you can choose on the day.”
Kevin was only really half paying attention to everything. There was a full-length mirror right there and while he wasn’t a vain man between dysphoria and oncoming maturity his adolescent mimicry had felt wrongwrongwrong. Not that things were perfect now by a long shot, but people kept having to drag him back into position as he twisted and turned to admire things like his mane and finally flat chest.
“Straight and relaxed, gyadin,” his gran said with a sharp tug on his mane and he immediately complied, drawing snickers from the rest of his little entourage.
“Yes, memu.” He felt as much as heard the pleased rumble she made as she returned to measuring the base of his tail.
“You know, if we can get this measuring done in time to make you clothes, you’re going to look wonderful. Just like your father.”
“He looks more like you,” his mother countered, fiddling with his hair same as she had been the last fifteen minutes, “Devin was narrower across, pretty much everything really.”
“He’s got Dad’s colors though,” Cody said. He’d been going through a thick pile of fabric swatches for the entire time he’d been there, occasionally whistling for the opinion of Vivi, sat on the floor across from him. Near as Kevin could tell she was trying to figure out some beadwork designs combining the maternal heritages she was part of and the paternal she hardly knew, and Cody was helping her as much as she was him. Finally, he held up swatches of rich blue and golden-yellow that stood in bold contrast to Kevin’s dark adult scales. “What do you think?”
“Gorgeous,” Kevin’s mother said before he could open his mouth. His grandmother got to her feet and smiled brightly down at the selection from over his shoulder.
“And fitting,” she said, turning her smile between him and Cody, “they’re a good enough match for some of your enku’s pack’s traditional colors.”
“So,” Kevin cut in, “I take it I don’t get a say in colors anymore?”
“No.”
“Some advice, little brother,” Cody said, smiling in bemusement, “just roll with it until you’re married, then blame everything on your husband. They can’t pull rank there.” Both older women gave him a critical look.
“Kafan, remind me to talk to Regina about double-checking with Mala?”
“Gladly.” Huffing, the old Osmosian turned Kevin to face her, looking him over. “Do you want some real married advice?” For a split second he wanted to say no, he was fine, but then remembered that he was going to be married in two months and had to lock his knees to stay up straight. Fuck, yeah, he had no idea what he was doing, why had he not got this worrying done sooner?
“That’d be nice, yeah.” Her expression softened back to a smile and she gave him a quick kiss.
“When he’s a dumbass,” she said, “and trust me he will be, all men are-”
“Memu.”
“As your brother proves, giving out his tactics in public.” Again Vivi was snickering. “When he’s a dumbass, give him the benefit of the doubt. There’s plenty of times he’ll do something that upsets you without realizing.”
“Just don’t let him get away with it too much,” Cody added. “He gets three chances for every bullshit thing you correct him on and if he fails you tell us, we’ll bring you and whatever you want right back home.” Kevin chuckled.
“Including the house?” Setting down her designs, Vivi rolled her eyes.
“Kevin, even Sid would dig up a house and move it across the galaxy for you, if just to spite anyone who hurt you. Anyway,” she then said, bringing her attention back to the sketches, “my advice? Don’t be afraid to walk away from a fight and come back later when you’re calmer.”
“Also,” Cody said, “just, be nice. Compliments, gratitude, being respectful.” He gave a bit of a wistful sigh. “The easier and more pleasant you two make things for each other, the happier your home will be and the sooner things will start really working for you.” Kevin nodded along, soaking in the information. Vivi was a wildcard, but Cody was over ten years wed and their grandparents had been married longer than the US had been a country, and he trusted all of them.
“Good advice, all around,” his mother finally said, “but I’ve got more important.” Gently she turned him 180 degrees to face her. “Learn from my mistakes and communicate. Talk about everything, tell him how you feel about everything, any struggles you’re having, any hopes you have, things you want, and encourage him to do the same.” Kevin opened his mouth to speak, but she held up a finger for silence. “I know this is something you have trouble with, because of all the things you had to get from me that was it, but trust me. There’s so much trouble and pain you can avoid if you just talk to your partner. Alright?”
The breath Kevin took was shaky. Everyone knew why, why this was the advice she was giving, and the silence in the room was palpable. With another, steadying breath Kevin nodded.
“Alright. Thanks mom.” You could see the tension wash off his mother’s shoulders as the two of them smiled at each other. Her gaze went soft and nostalgic as she finally took the time to step back and just look at him, before diving forward to wrap her arms around him and bury her face in his chest. It was with a watery smile of his own and a surprised delicacy (fuck, he hadn’t realized until that moment how much bigger than his human relatives he was now…) that he returned the gesture.
“Look at this,” she said with a watery laugh, “my baby’s all grown up.”
12 Weeks of Gifting – Sugar Twist Cowl
We’ve come to the end of 12 Weeks of Gifting!  These two and half months have certainly flown by. This week is our last free pattern in the series, but never fear, these patterns will be available year round for whenever you need a quick gift. And I can guarantee that the project this week knits up super quick because I designed and knit it myself – Check out the Sugar Twist Cowl.
This cowl came about when Hannah and I were talking about how much we love projects featuring smocked stitches – they look so complicated but it’s really an easy technique to do. I was already playing with some Biggo for a cowl pattern I wanted to do, so I started swatching. It’s then when I realized why most smocked stitch patterns are not written for knitting in the round – to get that distinctive look, you are wrapping alternating columns of ribbed stitches. If you do that in the round, you’ll have an obvious extra column of stitches at the end every other time you do the smocked stitch. Well, for a cowl, I wanted people to be able to wear it without an obvious seam no matter how they put it on, and I prefer to knit in the round anyway. So after a lot of thinking and more swatching (and then ripping out swatches), I figured out that by moving the start of the round over a few stitches every 6 rows, it’ll keep the stitch pattern looking the same all over.
I love how it turned out – this is one of my favorite patterns I’ve designed. I’ve always thought that Biggo is a perfect yarn for cowls – it’s super soft so it doesn’t bother my my skin and the bulky weight works up so quick. I choose the pretty Wonderland Heather color because it looks nice with my wool coat but honestly, this cowl would look great in any of the colors, even the darker ones. There are 2 sizes available -the small as shown in the pictures and a longer one that can wrap double around your neck for the colder days. And don’t worry, while the wrong side isn’t as striking as the smocked stitch, it’s actually quite nice so you don’t have to worry about the wrong side accidentally showing.
We hope you have enjoyed this years 12 Weeks of Gifting! How many have you been able to knit or crochet this year?
How to Do My Summer Skincare Routine
This article may contain affiliate links. See our Disclosure for more information.
Summer skincare isn't just about sun protection.
For me, it's usually one of the most challenging seasons because I tend to break out more, especially near my hairline (thank you, sweat!).
I also get a lot of pigmentation on the sides of my cheeks—even WITH sunscreen.
Thanks for watching!
And of course, it's always hard finding the right products that keep you hydrated and protected, without looking like an oil slick.
That's why this might just be my best summer skincare routine yet!
Not to jinx anything, but so far using these products, my skin has stayed surprisingly clear, even and only slightly dewy, instead of shiny. (I'm not even wearing powder in this photo, and in past summers I wouldn't be able to get away with that!)
Keep reading to find out my skincare goals this season, and everything I'm using right now. And check out my previous routines for spring, winter and fall if you missed them!
My Summer Skincare Goals
Tumblr media
My summer skincare goals include protecting my skin from UV and preventing pigmentation and breakouts.
Thanks for watching!
Alright, here's the lowdown on my skin priorities right now!
Sun protection: The sun is said to be responsible for 80 percent of skin aging, so obviously I'm all about the SPF at the moment. I can remember when I first started doing these mineral sunscreen guides, there were only a handful of high-zinc formulas to choose from, and most were quite heavy and occlusive. Now, there are a good number of lightweight options—so I think that's one reason why my skin is behaving better!
Fading and preventing pigmentation: In the spring, I was battling a serious case of post-acne hyperpigmentation after some Drunk Elephant products made me break out BADLY. That has mostly faded now, although I'm still working on it. At the same time, I'm being diligent about preventing new pigmentation. Sunscreen is half the battle, but so are the right actives. Niacinamide is what works the best for me, and I consider it to be an anti-aging treatment as well.
Preventing breakouts: Like I said, my skin has been unusually clear lately, thank God. But if I learned anything from my Drunk Elephant experience, it was not to get too cocky about that! So I'm keeping up my twice-daily acid routine. I think the niacinamide treatments I'm using right now are also making a difference, along with the lighter SPF and some new toners.
Confession: I fell off the wagon this summer with respect to all my gadgets (admittedly, I went a little wild with them in the spring!). I've just been TOO busy for anything more than an occasional Red Light Man treatment. But, I'm going to get back into using my ZIIP when I have some downtime in August (and yes, I plan to do a review). The microneedling I'm going to save for the fall, as you're not meant to do it after sun exposure.
Since I took you through my skin makeup last time, I won't bore you with that again here (I'm using pretty much the same things anyway).
As always, the majority of these products were purchased by me, and you can see how I scrutinize ingredients lists in this tutorial.
My Morning Skincare Routine
1. Cleanser:
Tumblr media
Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser
My morning cleanser right now is Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser, which I was also using in the spring. This has become one of my favourite gel cleansers—it's sulfate-free, and I don't find it drying at all. (But it might be not be moisturizing enough for dry skin, so I think it's best if you are normal to oily.) While I'm only using it in the mornings, you could also use it at night as the second step in a double cleanse.
I'm also still using the S.W. Basics Cleanser on a Shiseido Facial Cotton on days when I'm not hopping in the shower right away. It's a three-ingredient cleansing water that's great for a quick, gentle cleanse.
2. BHA:
Tumblr media
COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
What a surprise, COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid is next! I can't see myself EVER giving up this beta-hydroxy acid treatment that I've been using since 2017. As I explained in this review, it treats and prevents breakouts, exfoliates and brightens your skin, fades pigmentation and more. The texture is a liquid gel, and I use my fingers to smooth a generous layer all over my face (excluding the lips and eye area).
3. Serum:
Tumblr media
GEORGANIC Propolis Care Acne Serum
Then I wait about 20 minutes or so to give the BHA time to work before I apply the GEORGANIC Propolis Care Acne Serum. Ignore the name, because this serum is not just going to help acne-prone skin, but also dry or sensitive skin and pigmentation.
First of all, it's got 78 percent Centella Asiatica extract, which is an Asian herb that both moisturizes and strengthens the skin barrier. It also has 10 percent propolis (bee "glue"), which soothes and reduces inflammation, and two percent niacinamide, which has all of these benefits (including brightening). So it's doing a lot more than other serums—and with fewer ingredients! It has a lightweight texture and is highly unlikely to irritate you or break you out.
4. Moisturizer:
Tumblr media
Truly Organic Glass Skin Facial Serum
In summers past, I usually skipped this step and went straight from serum to sunscreen, since moisturizer would make me too greasy. This time, I've been experimenting with Truly Organic Glass Skin Facial Serum, and it's not having that effect at all! (The sunscreen I'm using is lighter, too, but more on that in a second.)
It's interesting that the brand is calling this a serum, because the texture is definitely a cream. It becomes more fluid once you spread it on your skin, so maybe that's why? Anyway, I absolutely love it. Who knew you could make a lightweight but nourishing cream out of soy lecithin, xanthan gum, aloe vera, coconut oil, cocoa butter and vitamin E?!
5. Eye Cream:
Tumblr media
Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream
Instead of eye cream, I'm using Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream right now. (I swear, this brand is one of my BEST discoveries this year!) Lately, I've been getting some irritation in my eye area, probably from some makeup I've been using, so I wanted to try a very basic cream that wouldn't cause any more issues. I find that I can't use a lot of eye creams because their ingredients lists are too complex, with too many potential irritants.
Like the Glass Skin Serum, this cream has a very simple, natural ingredients list—in fact, the ingredients are almost the same. Doll Face, however, has a slightly thicker texture and a pink tint (maybe from the seaweed extract?). It's perfect as an eye cream, and I also wouldn't hesitate to use it as a face cream, which I'll be doing once it gets colder. (I've already tested it all over my face, and it doesn't break me out.) Truly obsessed with this brand!
6. Sunscreen:
Tumblr media
Ava Isa Pure Untinted Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen
For my mineral sunscreen this season, I've got a brand new tube of Ava Isa Pure Untinted Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen, which the company recently tweaked to create a creamier texture. (There's also a tinted version, by the way, and you can now find them in the US at Credo Beauty!) This is such a great SPF for anyone who hates heavy, greasy sunscreens. It's so light on the skin, and the protection from UVA rays (the aging type of rays) is incredible.
I JUST received a PR sample of the new REN Clean Screen Mattifying Face Sunscreen SPF 30, so I'm going to be adding that to the rotation, too. It's not available yet here in Canada, but you can find it in the US and UK. You can learn more about all my sunscreen picks in this year's mineral sunscreen guide!
7. SPF Lip Balm:
Tumblr media
COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30
As I mentioned in my recent review, COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 is my top pick for an SPF lip balm. You're getting all-mineral protection in a moisturizing, water-resistant formula. It comes in a bunch of different tints—see my swatches here. My favourite is the coral shade called Tan Line.
I'm not wearing this in the photo above, though! (Oops!) That's Glossier Generation G in Crush with some Lanolips 101 Ointment on top.
8. Face Mists:
Tumblr media
Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist, BIOeffect OSA Water Mist and Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic
My last step in the morning (and throughout the day, actually) is face mist. I'm BIG on face mists in the summer. Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist is my latest purchase, a "liquid powder" that you shake and then spray on to mattify your skin. I've been experimenting with this instead of regular face powder, and it does a good job of taking away shine without making my skin look dry or dull.
I also like BIOeffect OSA Water Mist, which I was using last summer, too. This one is also slightly mattifying thanks to the silica, and hydrating thanks to the glycerin and hyaluronic acid. The packaging is great to pop in your handbag.
And I just bought another Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic, which I used two or three years ago and loved. This one is super juicy and refreshing, and is specifically formulated to help balance combo skin.
My Nighttime Skincare Routine
1. Makeup Remover:
Tumblr media
Darphin Azahar Cleansing Micellar Water
Moving on to evening... my first step is always micellar water, and I decided to try out another one to share with you, the Darphin Azahar Cleansing Micellar Water. If you feel like splurging, it does the job, with 94 percent natural ingredients (although BIOeffect's formula is technically more "clean"). It doesn't cause any irritation for me, but I'm also rinsing it off with the next step.
2. Cleanser:
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash
There's nothing like a foaming face wash in the summer to get off all the sweat and grime that's been seeping into your pores all day—am I right? I finally got around to trying Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash, which I bought a while back but somehow forgot about (I have way too many cleansers!).
This has a unique jelly texture that turns into a light creamy foam once you massage it over wet skin. Honestly, it's great (just like ALL the cleansers from this brand). It's gentle, sulfate-free and doesn't leave my skin feeling tight. Keep in mind that it's more for oily and combo skin, though. If you are dry, I think the Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser is better for you.
3. Cleansing Brush:
Tumblr media
Foreo Luna 2 for Combination Skin
As usual, I pair my cleanser with the Foreo Luna 2 for Combination Skin, my favourite gentle cleansing brush. Summer is when I use this puppy the most, since sunscreens have a tendency to clog pores and I'm paranoid of leaving any traces on my skin.
By the way, a new version of this brush has just come out, the Luna 3. The main difference is that there's now an app, so you can customize the treatment intensity with your phone. I'm not sure if they are discontinuing the older one but I hope not! Personally, I feel like I don't need the 3 as the 2 already works perfectly.
4. Toner:
Tumblr media
Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner and Pyunkang Yul Acne Toner
In the spring, I mentioned that I've started to incorporate a toner step in the evenings, after cleansing and before my acid. I was inspired by NYC facialist Christine Chin, who believes that skipping toner is the number one mistake most people make! My problem was finding the RIGHT toner. Most toners I've tried don't play well with the COSRX BHA for some reason, and my skin goes red, hot and flushed when I use them together. Then I got the idea to try Lotion P50 as my toner, and it didn't do that!
However, Lotion P50 isn't the most accessible product, so I wanted to find some other options I could recommend to you guys. Thank goodness for K-beauty. I found two more toners that are compatible with acids! Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner contains soothing aloe vera, hydrating snail mucin and 0.5 percent salicylic acid. Pyunkang Yul Acne Toner has willow bark extract (a natural BHA), niacinamide and Centella Asiatica extract. They're both quite cheap!
5. BHA:
Tumblr media
COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
After the toner, I apply COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, same as the morning. In past routines, you might remember me using it only in the mornings, with another salicylic acid treatment at night. But since the spring, I've stuck with this twice a day, and I really notice that my skin is always clear now. Like, I can be walking around all day sweating, or going through PMS time, and not even have ONE pimple. This stuff is GOLD!
6. Serum:
Tumblr media
SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense
As much as I love A313 (reviewed here), I'm taking a little break from retinoids for the next month or so. One, because I finished the tube and had to order another, and two, because I plan to be spending a lot of time outside in August. This paper talks about retinoids and phototoxicity, so I just like to be careful!
Instead, I'm applying SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense, which was also in my spring routine. I use this about 20 minutes after the acid. It has five percent niacinamide, which acts as an antioxidant and will help me combat any sun-induced pigmentation. There are also tons of studies about niacinamide's ability to repair radiation-induced DNA damage (see here for a few). Yes, I am obsessed with niacinamide and prefer it to vitamin C!
7. Lash Serum:
Tumblr media
neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum
In my last few routines, I've forgotten to include lash serum, so I wanted to let you know that I've been using neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum for a while now. You just paint this along your upper lash lines, and it helps strengthen your lashes so that they hang around longer (and therefore look thicker). Coming from Latisse, I think this has helped me maintain those results!
8. Eye Cream:
Tumblr media
Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream
Again, my "eye cream" right now is Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream. No, it doesn't have any anti-aging ingredients, but it's keeping my eye area nice and hydrated. I wish more brands would take a cue from this company's ultra-simple formulas! With eye creams especially, the fewer ingredients, the better.
9. Lip Balm:
Tumblr media
Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm
As always, my last step is some lanolin lip balm. All that's in Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm is medical-grade lanolin, which I think is the best thing for healing dry lips. Ever since I got onto this stuff, I NEVER experience chapping.
For a cheaper (but less cute) option, Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream is the same thing!
Conclusion
Tumblr media
My summer skincare products from Pai, Benton, Darphin, Indie Lee, Ava Isa, Pyunkang Yul, Youth to the People, GEORGANIC, Tatcha, SkinCeuticals, BIOeffect and Truly Organic.
I hope you enjoyed reading about this routine!
Even though I'd describe my skin as combination, I think a lot of these products would work for drier skin than mine, too. I can't say enough good things about Truly Organic in particular. The fact that they can make such incredible creams without a long list of weird synthetic ingredients is just amazing to me!
I hope you also check out GEORGANIC, because that's another one I'd recommend for ALL skin. It's a K-beauty brand, by the way (as are COSRX, Benton and Pyunkang Yul). I'm a bit late to the party but I'm working on a Korean "clean skincare" guide to share with you soon. Stay tuned!
2019 Mid-Year Clean Out
This year I did the Konmari method of cleaning and have accumulated a small basket of items to dispose of. Items that were never used and were still good, I have given them away.
I will also be giving small descriptions of items that I have tried but did not work out, hence I’m disposing of it.
Make-up
Tumblr media
1. Annabelle Kohl Eyeliner 156 Rhone I got this a long time ago, maybe highschool, and have kept it because it was a fairly smooth eyeliner. But honestly I hardly wore eyeliner, plus this is now very old and is not as smooth.
2. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #6 I got this on my second trip to Korea, 2015, and when I wanted to use it again the whole thing just came out. From what I remember this was a very good liner, I mainly used it under my eyes and in the inner corner.
3. innisfree Always New Auto Liner I bought this on my most recent trip, September 2018, thinking that this would be good. I have gotten innisfree liners before but they weren’t that good. They felt very hard, but when I tested this one it was pretty good and very similar to the Etude House one. But once again it was a disappointment, when I got back and decided to try it I found that it was really hard. Also this liner has a twist cap and not one that just pops out.
4. the SAEM Cover Perfection Tip Concealer with SPF28/PA++ Shade 1.5 This is the best concealer so far. It’s inexpensive and a lot more affordable than the Cover FX that I use to get. I actually dont fit this shade that’s why this is in here. But I do have to say that Cover FX carries a wider range of shades. I do feel that the shade of Cover FX fits a bit better compared to the SAEM.
5. dear, klairs Creamy & Natural Fit Concealer I actually didn’t give this a good run. But from what I remember this didn’t quite fit my skin tone but when I swatched it on my wrist it fits perfectly. I do remember that the formulation of this was a little drying and the coverage wasnt that great. And if you try to build it, it makes the area unnatural. I might give this a go but it’s hard to give others an oppurtunity when the SAEM is so much cheaper and works. I’m disposing of this because it has been opened for a while now.
6. Cover FX Cream Concealer in G Light This is actually pretty old. I was going to swatch it but the formulation has already sperated. This was not the same as the stick format and I just didn’t like how it felt on my skin and how my concealed spots looked either. I just checked and they have now changed their concealers. They don’t even sell the stick one anymore only a dapper.
7. Geisha ink The Silk Mascara I received this in a subscription box and I really enjoyed using this. It has like small hair fibers that make your lashes seem fuller. It says it’s buildable but I don’t like having that much eye make-up hence I didn’t really try building it. But I really enjoyed using this, however it is expensive around $40 or more. I would not spend that amount since mascara tends to go bad fast plus I don’t use it often enough to justify that price.
8. The Face Shop Brow Lasting Powder & Pencil in 04 Dark Brown I bought this for my mom, I forgot who I saw using it or recommended it. I felt this was okay. It’s nice that it has a pencil and powder together, reminds me of a Benefit product.
9. The Face Shop Designing browcara in 02 Light Brown & 04 Brown I really liked using these and have different colors because my hair color has changed. These are fairly old, hence they are getting disposed. But these gave me a nice hint of color/ color change for my brows. It also helped make my brows stay in place.
10. A’PIEU Water in Tint in CR01 I bought a few tints to try but have discovered I’m not a tint type of gal. I definitely like using balms more. I don’t like lipsticks either because I find it heavy.
11.L’Oreal Color Infailible in 002 Hourglass Beige I believe this may have been the first eyeshadow that I ever purchased. I forgot who I saw on Youtube that recommended this line of eyeshadows and decided to grab one to try. This is still a very nice eyeshadow since it goes on so smooth and this shade can also act as a highlight too. However, it doesn’t really stay on unless you have a primer. This has been in my collection for a very long time and it’s time to let it go. Since I don’t reach for it plus it’s really old.
12. bareMinerals Prime Time foundation primer & Matte SPF15 Foundation in light W15 I can’t remember how I obtained this mini set, but it was from Sephora. This was my first foundation and foundation primer I have ever tried. I did like it when I first tried it and was going to repurchase when I finished the sample. But over time I discovered K-Beauty and started to lean towards that more, also because of cost. I was a student back then and didn’t have much income plus this was an item that I hardly used and was not part of my daily routine.
Tumblr media
13. Pupa Sonolone 3 Brown 14. L’Oreal Color Infallible 013 Burning Black 15. Etude House Drawing Eyebrow 03 16. Clinique colour surge eye shadow soft shimmer 06 Frosted Blossom 17. Clinique Blush & Bronzer Duo: Iced Lotus Blushing Blush Powder Blush & Sunkissed True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer
18. Estee Lauder Pure Color Love Lipstick 19. The Face Shop Aura Color Control Cream 02 Natural Beige 20. Nature Republic Super Origin Complete Control Cream Tinted SPF30 PA++ 21. Skin79 Super+ BB Cream 22. Tony Moly Pure Aura Luminous Pure Aura CC Cream SPF30 PA++ 23. Lioele Beyond The Solution BB Cream 24. Etude House precious mineral BB Cream SPF30 PA++ 25. BRTC Aqua Rush Water Drop BB Cream 26. Skin79 Super+ BB Cream Gold Collection
Tumblr media
27. The Body Shop Japanese Matcha Tea Pollution Clearing Mask This was okay wasn’t really what I thought it was going to be. I used up about half of it before giving up. It did tingle a bit on my skin when I used it.
28. dear, klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask I really enjoyed using this in the beginnning until I started reusing it again and noticed that I kept on getting mini pimples, and decided to double check the ingredients in this. Lo and behold sodium hyaluaronic was one of the top 5 ingredients. Hence, I have to dispose of it because I am sensitive to that ingredient. The texture of this is very interesting it’s like a pudding and everytime you use it you would see a flat product as if you never touched it.
29. Huna Apothecary Skin Nutrition Balm I got this in a subscription box and really wanted to just finish it but couldn’t get around it. One the product is really hard to get out as it’s really hard and just rubbing my fingers on the surface doesn’t give enough for me to apply it. I also found it really oily to the point of it being greasy. Not something I fancy.
30. Avene High Protection Lotion SPF 50+ I got this in a set. I don’t think I ever tried this product but it has a scent which I don’t really like.
31. Avene Cicalfate Restorative Cream I thought this would be sort of like a healing cream to help fade some of my scars and also provide moisture for my legs. However, I couldn’t get past the scent of this. Honestly I wasted like $22 on the set which included the above product. The only thing that I did use in the set was the mineral spray which I finished a while back.
32. Thank You Farmer Sun Project Shimmer Sun Essence SPF 30 PA++ I’m not sure what is in this sun essence but I wasn’t a fan. I found it was a little oily and I didn’t like how it went on my skin. I have noticed I’m not a big fan of all over shimmer products. I just like the hints of shimmer on like the high points of my face/body.
33. Frienvita Peeling N Deadcell Sauna Godness Pad The pads couldn't even last the exfoliation process. It literally came apart after a few wipes. It also doesn't help that the rice granules were thick and didn't have enough liquid/solution to make it glide smoothly. In the end I just rubbed the rice bits on my face and used it without the pad.
WOW 33 items in total, it’s actually not that much but I still think that’s a lot. I did do an inventory of all my products and found that I have a lot of stuff that I need to use and go through. I actually had a lot more stuff that I was able to give away to people but I have definitely accumulated a lot of products and wasted a lot of money. This year I really wanted to focus on not purchasing as much and only buying when I need to. I use to be fairly good with my spending but I also feel like I’m spending in order to fill a void or to find something that would ‘spark joy’ in me. I feel like I’m living a mundane life right now.
I might do like a yearly round-up of my purchases, not sure yet. Honestly I didn’t think this through, because the photos I took so far aren’t that great and were for my reference only. It only occurred to me now that it might be nice to do a yearly round-up of my beauty purchases and maybe also put pricing down as well to see how much I spent.
GSTC2: The Return of a Hero~Chapter 11
(A/N-honestly, I think I’m pretty proud of how this chapter turned out.)
“Which color looks better?” Des called out over her shoulder as she held up two paint swatches against the living room wall.  There was a pause.  “Hello?” she wanted an answer.
“They’re exactly the same.” Steve spoke up from behind her, still sitting on the couch.
“No they’re not. One has a more bluish hint to it than the other.” She corrected him.
“I don’t see it.” She was sure he wasn’t even looking.
“Well maybe you’re colorblind.” She was annoyed by the fact that he wasn’t taking the matter seriously.
“Just pick one, they both look good.” And then he added, “You got permission from your landlord to paint, right?”
“Yeah.” She gave a quick and meek response.  This must have caught his attention.
“I’m not painting the room if you didn’t get permission Des.” He warned her.
“Relax, okay?  I’ll get permission.  It’s my lease, not yours.” She reminded him.  There was another moment of silence.  “Well?”
“Well, what?”
“Help me pick one!” she shook the two pieces of colored paper to get his attention.
“Why do you need me to?” he innocently asked.
“Ugh, you men are all the same!” she began to fuss, “This is a big deal, if I don’t like it you’re going to have to paint the whole thing over again.”
“Me?” he caught on to her statement.
“Yes!”
“Why me?”
“Because you said you would!”
“No, no, no, no, no…” he quickly corrected her.
“Too late, you already said you would.”
“And what will I get for doing this?” there was a certain hint in his tone that had her guessing exactly what he had in mind.
“The honor of being my boyfriend.” She shut his idea down entirely. Or so she thought.  He rushed up behind her while her back was to him and began to tickle her sides.  She squealed and tried to swat his hands away, still holding onto the two small pieces of paper, refusing to drop the subject.  She didn’t want to laugh or giggle, or give him the satisfaction, but it was such an involuntary response.  “Stop!  Stop it!” she cried out between fits of laughter, “It’s…not funny!” she was running out of breath to fuss with him any longer and could only twist herself around and double over to try and evade his playful torture.  She hated that he was winning her over, even if it was in such a sweet way.  “Steve!” she squealed more, finally stopping the paint swatches.
“Too bad you’re so ticklish, huh?” he had to poke at her pride a little bit.  And he lifted her with a simple arm around her waist and carried her off.  She playfully kicked and swatted at him, knowing her small attempt to fight him off was useless.  If she really wanted him to let her go, she would have made it clear, and he would have obeyed her wishes.  She knew where he was carrying her, as it had been about a week since their last taste of each other, but rather than be annoyed she found herself getting excited about it as well.
              About an hour later she had almost completely forgotten about which color to paint the living room, she was more concerned about catching her breath after enduring two screaming orgasms.  He had that power over her, and in a sense she had the same effect over him, he kept coming back for more either way, even when she was pretending to not want any part of what he had to offer.  The scratches on his back were evidence of her terrible bluffing.  They both laid there, sweaty and giddy after thoroughly enjoying themselves, and even after so much enjoyment she theatrically turned up her nose when she rolled over and saw the cheesy grin on his face.
“What are you grinning at?” she mocked him, and he shrugged, “You’re like a teenage boy when it comes to this sort of stuff, you know that right?”
“Is it wrong that I enjoy spending time with you like this?” he asked her.
“Spending time? It’s not like we’re reading comics or sitting together watching the weather channel.” She sassed him more. “It’s called sex.” He moved closer to her and propped himself up on his elbow, while his other hand slid over her bare stomach.  She eyed him suspiciously as he started to trace feather light tracks down her torso, stopping just above her hot womanhood.  This and the way his eyes were scanning her face had her melting again. Her sex was still wet and swollen with the aftermath, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t up for more.
“Well it’s better than painting your living room.” His voice was low, yet playful.
“What if I wanted it painted today?” she tried to drag the conversation in another direction, just to test his persistence.  His fingers danced lower until they were resting against her damp folds, and he started to gently rub her.  A light sigh escaped her without her knowing.
“Nah, I think you want me to stay right here.” He had a sultry smirk on his face. She bit her lip, not wanting to smile from ear to ear at his statement, or the idea of going another round, although she knew it was coming and she wasn’t going to turn it down.  He leaned in, putting his lips closer to hers as he continued to rub her slowly, getting her hot all over again.
“I guess we’re not going to get much done today.” She whispered before meeting his lips for a soft kiss. He chuckled and continued to kiss her tenderly, and the heat between them started rising again.  She reached her am up and wrapped it around his shoulders, pulling him closer.  The kissing grew more passionate, and it wasn’t long before she felt the evidence of his arousal putting pressure against her thigh.  But everything came to a screeching halt when the nagging sound of his communicator cut through the air.  “Damn it.” She pulled away from him and huffed.
              He sat up on his elbow again and sighed heavily, both of them dealing with the disappointment.  He looked at her with a soft face, hoping she wouldn’t be too upset, but as expected she sat up and folded her arms in that manner she always did.  Reluctantly he folded back the covers and climbed out of bed, leaving her with a whisk of cool air and an empty spot next to her.  She watched as he picked up his jeans from the floor and dug out his communicator from the pocket, he scanned the message and shook his head.  She knew that look on his face.
“I take it you can’t pass on this one.” She spoke up.  His face showed remorse as he started getting dressed.  “Didn’t think so.”
“I’m sorry.” He apologized for having to leave so abruptly.
“Where are you headed?”
“Berlin.” He stated simply as he fastened his belt.
“Great,” she sat back against the pillows again.  This meant he would be gone for a while.  Once his shirt was on he walked over to the bed and placed a gentle hand under her chin, directing her to look at him.
“Hey,” he paused, “I’ll be back as soon as I can.” And then he added, “And then I’ll get to work on your living room, okay?” he knew she wasn’t happen.  Maybe he felt like he was in trouble somehow.
“If you say so.” She sounded miffed.  He leaned forward to give her another kiss.
“I love you.”
“Love you too.” Her response didn’t sound as sentimental as his.  He gave her a half hearted smile and walked out of the room, off to his next mission.  And there she sat alone, again.  It would have been nice if once, just once, he would pass up on whatever mission he was being recruited for.  It always seemed to happen this way, they would be in each other’s company and he would have to leave on the drop of a dime.  She knew how he felt about her, but it was in these moments that she started to doubt it.
***
              Desirae was trying her best not to nod off or swerve out of the lane, but her eyelids felt so heavy that she thought she was going to lose the battle.  She wasn’t even sure how long she had been on the road at that point.  She unrolled the window and turned the radio on, turning the volume up a little louder than she would have liked in a desperate attempt to stay awake.  Her next idea was to punch herself in the face.  The sky was getting darker, so she had to have been driving for almost 24 hours straight, only stopping once at a rest stop for gas.  She was proud of herself, and at the same time wondering if she was truly crazy.
              Her thoughts wandered to Steve, trying to figure out what he must have been doing since she left him at the diner.  She was sure if anything that he went back to wherever he came from.  Which would be New York.  Suddenly it occurred to her that he could have been tailing her this whole time. No, he wouldn’t try that hard. Maybe he ditched the car and took a plane home, after all he wasn’t the one being hunted.  Still, she couldn’t help but take a peek in the rearview mirror, just to make sure he wasn’t actually behind her.  There were only a few cars behind her, none of them looking like the one Steve was driving, but there was a dark SUV flying up rather quickly. She turned back to the road, and blinked a couple times, still battling to stay awake.  But out of curiosity she looked again, seeing that the SUV was now right behind her, practically riding her bumper.  She could barely see the headlights on it.  She grumbled, not liking how close the car was and hit her brakes quickly, just enough to make the SUV back off a bit.
              It stayed a little ways behind her, but then merged into the passing lane and came up right beside her.  Suddenly she had that bad feeling in the pit of her stomach again.  She watched on as it pulled up next to her, but it was too dark to make out the person driving the car.  They unrolled the window, she expected whoever it was to try and yell at her about her brake checking them, but her heart jumped out of her chest when she saw the barrel of a gun sticking out of the window.
“Shit!” she slammed on the brakes again, just as they fired a single bullet in her direction.  The SUV sped on, and for a second she thought she was safe, until her tiny car suddenly lurched forward in such a jerking motion that her head snapped forward and back.  Someone had rammed her from behind.  She saw another SUV directly on her bumper, and it sped up and hit her bumper again.
This was an ambush.
              Her body went cold and covered in goosebumps.  She was in trouble.  The SUV in the passing lane slowed down, trying to line up next to her again.  She had to think fast.  There was an exit, she could possibly get away!  Without looking she cranked the wheel to the right, side sweeping another car that honked at her as she sped on.  She raced around the tight twisting road and took her first left, cutting across traffic and just missing another car.  She turned to look behind her, whoever was chasing her was still following her.  She turned back just in time to see that she was about to ram into another car, and she cranked the wheel to the left, swerving into oncoming traffic.  A bus blared its horn at her, coming head on. Another jerk to the right and she narrowly missed it.  Her adrenaline was coursing through her body, her heartbeat thumping in her ears.  How did this happen?  How did they find her?
              Somehow she was still being followed.  “Motherfucker!” she cursed and punched the steering wheel. She took another hard right onto a different, less busy road and sped on.  There was a guardrail, and she didn’t know what was on the other side but she was sure not to find out.  If she kept her foot on the gas maybe she could outrun them.  But her car was so tiny, no match for an SUV, and the tight curves on the road made it hard to maneuver, her tires were screeching with every turn.  The SUV drew closer, her speedometer had her going over 80 miles an hour, how could she go any faster without going off the road?  Something whizzed by her ear, a bullet, and it pierced the windshield.  “Fuck!” she started to wonder if she was going to survive this.  Another bullet went through the windshield, and then there was a sharp pain in her arm, she was hit.  Instinctively she grabbed onto her arm, and her little car swerved into the guardrail.
              Another jerk on the wheel and she was on the road, but not for long.  The only thing she saw were headlights coming up on her left at the very last second, just before it smashed into the driver side.  The loud crash made her ears ring, broken glass flew everywhere, and the next thing she knew the car rolled and started tumbling down the steep hill. Her head was spinning, she couldn’t see straight, broken glass was everywhere, there was another sound she heard faintly over crushing metal, was she screaming?  The tumbling finally stopped when the car crashed into something else, and she finally opened her eyes to see a lake.  And then she felt the water pouring in.
              She slammed into the driver side with all her might but the door was completely crushed, keeping her trapped inside.  She was short of breath, panting, desperately trying to fill her lungs with air as the water rushed in, now up to her waist. Quickly she thought to unbuckle and climb out the shattered window, but the sudden jolt of pain in her leg botched her plans, she was stuck.  Her leg was somehow stuck between the door and the dash.  Panic started to set in, maybe she wasn’t going to make it out of this. The water surrounded her chest, she was sinking fast, and it only made it harder to breathe.  “Help!” she cried out, not knowing why.  Nobody would hear her.  “Somebody help me!”
              More bullets came through the roof of the car, zipping through the water, narrowly missing her.  She wanted to scream again but there was no breath left in her lungs. The water was now up to her neck, it started to sink in. This was it.  Another heart stopping pain in her shoulder, she was hit again.  Was it water splashing on her face, or tears?  She didn’t want to die.  She wasn’t ready.  She tipped her head back for one last breath before the water covered her, and down the car went, sinking towards the bottom of the lake.  She held her breath and tried to pull free, but there was no point in trying.  She rammed into the door again with no luck.  All of this thrashing only made her lose her breath that much faster. Her lungs were burning, trying to hold in what little air she had.  She wouldn’t last much longer.  The water was red around her, her blood seeping from her bullet wounds.
This was it.  There was no escaping this.  Against her will she gasped for air, and then the pain got much worse.  She was suffocating, she was drowning.  There was nothing to do but accept fate.  And then the darkness came.
                Pressure.  There was a beating pressure on her chest.  She could feel it.  She heard someone calling to her in the distance.  Maybe…it was her family.  Long gone, but now here to take her.  “Des!” it was so faint.  More pressure.  “Come on,” it sounded louder, “You have to breathe!” Pain, she could feel her body again. She was alive.
              She felt the water leave her lungs, and then there was air, finally.  She drew in a deep, raspy, begging breath.  “Yes, come on, keep breathing.” She coughed up more water.  She felt large hands pull her head up and she breathed in again. “Look at me,” she knew this voice, “Look at me!” she finally opened her eyes and saw him, her savior.  “Oh thank God.” He sounded relieved, and with a shaky hand she grabbed onto his shirt.
“Steve…” she coughed up more water, and tasted her own blood.
“Keep breathing.” He told her again.  She looked at his face, seeing water dripping from his nose and chin.  He went in after her.  But where did he come from?
“They found me.” She tried to speak, and then gasped again.  “How did they find me?” Also, how did he find her?
“We’ve got to get out of here.” He spoke with urgency.  But her body wasn’t about to move.  She was chilled and shaky, and weak from clinging onto life.  She felt weightless as he lifted her to her feet, and before she tumbled over she felt him pull her arms around his neck.  “Hang onto me.” He told her.  But her weak arms slipped off of him and she fell back to the ground.  “You have to try.” He bent down to pick her up again.
“Just leave me here.” She didn’t have the strength.
“I’m not leaving you.” His voice was harsh.  He pulled her onto his back again, “Now hold on.”
              She clung to him with what was left in her, and he climbed back up that steep knoll, taking her with him.  She faded in and out, almost slipping off of him again, but he grabbed her arm and pulled her higher on his back, securing her.  She didn’t remember much else.  She remembered him carrying her, and then laying in the back of a car as he drove off.  “Stay with me.” He tried to coax her to stay awake, but it was no use.  She closed her eyes and drifted off.
The Road to Us 17
Book 3 - Til The End of Time - Chapter 5 - Swatches, Sashes, and Ties
"Handsome!" Peta yelled from her spot on the floor next to the couch.
"Yes?" He said appearing in the doorway of their living room.
"Are you going to help today?" She said sweetly as he caught sight of the thousand color swatches she had laying next to her.
"Isn't Shar coming over?" Maks said nervously.
"Yeah but......" She said dropping her head before she muttered softly. "I wanted you to help."
"Babe, aren't you picking bridesmaid dress?" Maks said trying to smooth this over before her emotions got the best of her.
"Yeah..." She said as she moved around some swatches. "Just forget it."
"Whoa, no." He said moving over to sit next to her
"Excuse me?" She said her head snapping to look at him.
"I'm not going to just forget it. I just figured this was more of a girl thing and you'd want time with Shar. That's all."
"You don't have to help." She said ignoring him at this point.
"Peta Jane." He said softly resting his hand on her shoulder.
"Maksim." She retorted causing him to crack up which eventually sent her into a fit of giggles as well and she finally looked at him.
"Do you want me to help?" He asked.
"I did, I just want you to be involved. I understand that this is more girly though so it's okay if you don't."
"Okay, well then I'll help." He said simply.
"Maks....I didn't mean to..." She said as he stopped her.
"You didn't do anything. I just thought you'd want Shar time but if you want me to help I'll help." He said leaning down to press his lips to her forehead.
"Are you sure?" She said looking at him skeptically.
"I'm positive."
"Thank you." She said tipping her head back and kissing him. "Maybe we can get the tuxes picked too."
"We can do that. I'm going to finish this paperwork that I was doing for the studio. When is Shar coming?"
"In a half hour."
"Okay, I'll go finish this up and then I'll be back in pretty girl." He said as he headed to the library, praying that they'd make it through the next 7 months with the wedding planning, pregnancy and mood swings all mixed in there. He knew it wasn't her fault but he didn't want to upset her further either.
A half hour later he came back into the living room to find Peta and Sharna situated on the floor with Peta's laptop open on the coffee table as well as sorted stacks of the swatches.
"Hey Shar." Maks said sitting down next to Peta.
'Hey, you helping?" She looked at him surprised. He shook his head at her and she looked at him slightly confused.
"He's helping because I asked him too and he said no and then I got upset and he felt guilty. That's why he's helping." Peta said as she stacked another pile of colors.
"Not true.....but tell me how I can help?" Maks said.
"Okay, so these are the purple swatches we have from the place we picked to get the dresses and tuxes from. They have lots of styles and basically each style is available in each color and it matches between the dresses and tuxes. So we're trying to match up colors of purples that go well together. We're doing 4 to a stack, right P?" Sharna explained.
"Yup." Peta confirmed as she created another stack. For the next 20 minutes they sorted stacks of shades of purple, eliminating some and changing stacks as they went. Finally they had three color palettes they all three liked.
"Alright, now we need to pick a dress." Sharna said as Peta opened the site. "What style you two thinking?"
"I want to keep it simple, something that you guys can keep after. But I'd like them to be long and flowy. You think that's okay?" She said looking between the two.
"I think so. I'd prefer them to be long too. I just think they look more elegant that way." He agreed.
"I think so too especially for the classical fairy tale romantic style you're going for. Now how you thinking for the top?"
"I think either one shoulder or strapless sweetheart. It is going to be outside and in the summer in LA. So it'll be warm and yeah." Peta said explaining what she was envisioning.
"Sounds good. Let's see if we can narrow it down some and then go from there." Maks suggested. So they started going through the dresses, opening ones they liked in another tab and moving on through ones that weren't that great. Finally after an hour they had it narrowed down to three, one had one shoulder and the other two were strapless sweetheart necklines.
"I like that one best." Maks said pointing to the last strapless sweetheart one. It was long and flowy and the top was swooped toward the left so that the fabric was gathered up some giving the dress some simple detail.
"That's the one I like best too." Sharna agreed.
"Me too." Peta agreed after checking the other two once more.
"Now colors." Maks said laughing. This was quite the decision that he hadn't even realized.
"I want you in a dark one and then the others in light colors and then Alayna's dress to match yours." Peta said definitively. She had thought a lot on that one and knew that's what she wanted.
"Okay, so let's look through our stacks and go from there. And then we need to actually pick Alayna's dress." Sharna directed. So they spent the next 25 minutes making the color decisions and finding Alayna's dress which ended up being slightly tricky but finally they found one.
"That one! Oh and it has a sash that we can change it's color so we can have it be your color and then make the sash match the other girls." Peta said getting excited.
"Okay, let's do it." Maks said laughing at her excitement. The dress matched what they wanted as well for Alayna, simple, long, and cute without a whole lot of frill so that she'd be comfortable for the day. They got all those ordered based off the girls measurements and then moved on to the tuxes.
"Okay, handsome what do you want?" Peta asked looking at him.
"Black tuxes, ties, and vests. And we'll do Val to match Shar and then Alex and Teddy to match Nic and Rumer." He said simply.
"And you're doing Black with white shirt, black vest, black tie right?" Peta asked.
"Yup, so whatever one we get the guys, I'll just do the same one with my colors." Maks said. The guys tuxes went a little quicker with the exception of colors. They didn't have the same name colors as the dresses so they just had to match as closely as possible and they ended up fitting them into the color scale with Val's being slightly lighter than Shar's and Alex & Teddy's being slightly darker than Nic and Rumer's.
"So we're good with all these?" Peta said looking at Maks as her finger hovered over the order button. It was a huge purchase toward the wedding so she just wanted to be sure.
"Yes. I'm good. Shar? You agree?" Maks asked.
"Yeah I like them all, and we got them all in the sizes we need but we have the seamstress at the bridal shop where we got your dress who said would help us if we need." Sharna added.
"Okay, I'm getting them then." She said smiling.
"One step closer." Maks said pressing a kiss to her head.
"Mrs. Chmerkovskiy." She said turning to kiss him as Sharna sat on smiling happily for her next friend.
"So what's next on the list?" Sharna asked.
"Flowers and we actually have something to ask you." Peta said.
"Yeah?"
"We need to go looking at a few of the vineyards around here and see if we like any of them for the wedding. Would you and Paul be interested in doing some road tripping for a few days with us and seeing some vineyards?"
"Uhh, definitely! When do you want to go?"
"We were thinking of maybe going for an extended weekend, not this one coming but the one after. That puts us right at the two month mark so we should decide something right around then." Peta said yawning slightly. She shifted her body into Maks's and leaned against him.
"Let me double check that Paul is good to go away those days and then we'll definitely be in." Sharna said as she helped them clean up the zillion color swatches scattered across the living room. They were pleased with the progress they had made so far. They knew they had a long way to go but they were getting there. After Sharna left, Peta stayed tucked into Maks as her exhaustion set in.
"Thank you for helping handsome." She said as her arm wrapped around his waist.
"I actually enjoyed myself pretty girl. But how about we go lay down for a bit before you fall asleep on me on the floor." He chuckled.
"I'm comfy. Blame your babies. They make me sleepy." She murmured.
"You won't be comfy after a bit sweetheart. And I know, that's cause you're doing a great job helping them grow. He said as he helped them both stand and pressed a kiss to her tiny baby bump that had appeared the other day. He took her upstairs and they snuggled up as she took a nap and then they spent the rest of the evening working on more wedding details.
***And that's a wrap for this one. Pictures of the dresses and tuxes as well as colors are in the header. Please don't forget to like this up and let me know what you thought in the comments. Let me know if there's any specific details you want to see played out. Thank you all for your support! I love you all.
Teenage dream of a sunken city
Chapter 2 part 2 Every one started to get up. Helping each other not to fall or walk into things. Robert felt somewhat clear in his head, so he lead mom and Ida out of the church and towards the church hall. Lars and one of the other adults who had to skip the sermon were standing outside and helping the others get in properly.
 They had placed out a lot of chairs, pillows and bean bags around the main room. They helped their high family members and friends get something to drink and eat. Robert got a sandwich and a glass of water. He, mom and Ida found a good place to sit and eat.  Ida was mumbling random and unconnected things, Robert didn’t even tried to pay attention to her, but mom tried to chat with her and reel her back to reality. “Hello Lena!” Both Robert and mom looked up and saw Danielle coming over towards them, she had Pontus in tow.   Robert and Pontus used to hang out in middle school, but not anymore. At least not at school, and Robert wasn’t even sure that he wanted to hang out with Pontus on the weekends anymore. Having no friends was better than being the spare friend.      This could get awkward, and he was still seeing odd shapes and colors in the corner of his eye, and sometimes everything looked like it was melting. He didn’t recall seeing any of them at the sermon, so they were probably both sober. His mother smiled. “Hi, Danielle! I would get up to hug you but my legs feel weird.” “Oh don’t worry about it!” Danielle laughed. “I just wanted to invite you to my makeup sales party.” “What’s a makeup sales party?” “It’s a business model, based on network marketing. I’ve come in contact with a company that sells makeup, I’ll get a bunch of swatches, let people try them out and then order them through me. If other people want to get in on it they can do it through me. You can imagine it as a trickle down economy pyramid.” Mom nodded. “You’re going to have to re-invite me when I’m sober. But a makeup pyramid sounds nice.”  Robert and Pontus had been awkwardly staring at each other during the whole conversation. It was like they were having the most awkward staring contest. But Robert wasn’t going to lose this. He wasn’t going to be the one who talked first.  Danielle was the one who broke their silence. “Speaking of parties, Robert neither went nor RSVP-ed to Pontus birthday party yesterday.” Both Robert and Pontus froze. Mom tried to narrow her eyes suspiciously, but she still didn’t have completely control over her muscles so it mostly looked like she was squinting because the sun was shining in her eyes. “Paar-tyy?” she said and took a sip from her glass of water, spilling some of it on her chin. “I’m sorry but Robert never mentioned a birthday party, and we didn’t got an invitation card in the.. box… for mail.”   “I didn’t invite Robert.” Pontus said. “He doesn’t get along well with some of the other people I invited so we’re going to hang out on Wednesday. So we can celebrate on my actual birthday, with the rest of my family.” That was fucking bullshit, and Robert weren’t going to let him get away with it. He needed to come up with something to expose Pontus fake ass with. He heard someone laugh close to them, Robert looked that way and saw Amanda sitting and talking with two other persons just a few meters away from them. Perfect.   “Oh, you should’ve told me before. I can’t on Wednesday; I’m going to the youth group meeting.” Robert said. He had no idea which day the youth group meetings were on, but neither did Danielle and Pontus. Besides, he didn’t plan on actually going to go the meeting. If mom asked about it he’d just say he got the days mixed up and already missed it. “Oh, that’s too bad.” Pontus had the nerve to try to actually sound disappointed.   “A real shame.” Robert took a sip from his glass and spilled water over his shirt. Danielle picked up on the awkward energy going on and grabbed her sons had. “We have to help out in the kitchen. But I’ll talk to you about the makeup sales party.” Mom waved after them. “She’s a funny one, Danielle. Building makeup pyramids.” After maybe half an hour Robert started to feel restless and Ida started to feel nauseous. Mom and Lars took Ida to the bathroom in case she needed to throw up, Robert decided to get up and see if there were any sandwiches left. He was still a little bit disoriented, the colors and distance he saw didn’t exactly match up with reality, but he managed to get to the kitchen.  There were no sandwiches, but some cookies and juice boxes. He grabbed a juice box and some cookies and turned around to return to his bean bag. “Hi!” he had not expected Amanda to stand right behind him, and the hallucinations made her skin look like it was made out of slime. The surprise almost made him drop the juice box. “ Fu- Damn, you scared me.” Amanda just smiled. “I heard that you’re going to the youth group on Wednesday!” It really was a meeting on Wednesday? Shit. “Well. I guess so. I do-“ “You should go together with me, Moa and Anton!” Amanda said. “We’re going to go and hang out at Moas place after school and then her mom will drive us there.” “I don’t… know Moa that well?” he didn’t knew Moa at all, just who she was. If it was the Moa he was thinking of. They went to the same kindergarten, and Robert once stole her doll, but that was the peak of their interaction. “Well, then I guess I’ll have to introduce you!” Amanda grabbed his wrist and dragged him away from the kitchen. She led him to her friends who were sitting in a pile of bean bags. It was the Moa he thought she meant. Moa Poska. She was in the same grade as Robert but not in the same class. He had never seen her without her girl posse before.  Next to her there sat a boy. Anton Andersson- Larsson. Robert had actually talked to him a little bit, and been at his house. His little brother Simon was one of Idas classmates and she had been invited to Simons birthday party last year. The impression Robert had of Anton was that he was aloof and too cool to interact with other people. Or at least people like Robert; one year younger losers with no real friends. “This is Robert! He is going to attend a youth group meeting for the first time on Wednesday. Can he come over to your house with us too?” Amanda said.  Moa watched him without saying anything. It felt as if she was trying to determinate if he was worthy enough to visit her house. Then, she blinked rapidly a few times. “I’m sorry. It looked like you were melting for a second there.” She shifted her position in the bean bag. “Yeah, you can come over. I’ll probably have to double- check with mom first, but it’s ok with me.” Robert forced himself to smile. He couldn’t back out now; he had trapped himself in this. “Thank you.”   Amanda sat down in one of the bags and signed to Robert to join her, he was just about to when he heard mom calling for him. He saw mom, Lars and Ida walking towards him. It was time to go home. Robert excused himself and walked over to his family. It started getting dark outside. They got into the car and Lars started driving home. The vibrations and humming from the car’s engine lulled Robert to sleep. He dreamed about buildings dissolving into water.
