hello my dear anon. i would be very happy to provide advice on how to make friends here on tumblr dot com! i will be focusing on how to make fandom friends, because that is all i have ever really done on this webbed site. i am not going to get into the nitty-gritty of social skills and manners, because i want to focus on the basics of fostering connections with other people in a fandom on tumblr, but i'll quickly say: don't be over-familiar in an invasive or jokey-mean way to people you don't know well, respect boundaries and social cues (don't repeatedly message someone you don't know well if they're not replying to you), and be generally niceys!! i know you probably know all that. but it's key, and i think not everyone is totally fully aware of social skills when it comes to interacting online in particular, so i felt it was worth saying (⁠◍⁠•⁠ᴗ⁠•⁠◍⁠)⁠❤

now we can move into the real advice :3c

first things first: actively participate in your fandom! you can do this by creating fanworks (writing fic, making art, etc)— and if you want to, you should give it a try! participating in the fandom doesn't need to involve making fanworks, though. plenty of people mainly participate in fandom by supporting creators and taking part in conversation about the characters or ships that they're interested in. on tumblr, you can do this by leaving your thoughts on fanworks that you like! you can do this by replying, or— even better— reblogging with comments in the tags!

other good forums to interact with the fandom include meta posts (you can add thoughts in the body of your reblog if you have something you want to say, or in the tags if you're shy / just want to go "hell yeah!!!" generally) and questions that people ask ("does anyone know if [character] ever [does/says something specific]?") — these are nice opportunities to find and connect with other fans who are talking about or want to talk about the things that interest you ❤️

of course, you can also post things in the tags! generally, best etiquette is to keep posts in the fandom, character, and ship tags kind / civil. you will see people saying things like "ugh [character or ship] is so annoying" or "i hate that people only write [character] as a [top/bottom/seme/uke]." however, this is not something i recommend doing or engaging with. everyone can do whatever they want forever, but i find this type of behavior unnecessary and unpleasant. people who center their tumblr experience around complaining about what other people like and do are frankly participating in fandom in a way that confuses me. i fail to understand why someone would choose to consistently focus on things that upset or annoy them; fandom is meant to be enjoyable.

try to talk about the characters and ships you like, and the dynamics you like for them. rather than going "ugh i hate it when people write [character] in [some specific way]," try talking about the dynamic or characterization you'd like to see more of. bonus points if you can resist saying "why doesn't anyone write [xyz thing you want]," because there's a good chance someone has written that, and if they see your post, they're not gonna know if you haven't seen their fic, or if you have seen it and just didn't like it. a better way to put that would be "does anyone have recs for fics where [xyz thing you want happens]?" do not say "i tried looking but couldn't find anything good." people aren't gonna want to rec you things if you're leading with a weird attitude. of course it can be difficult to find fic that you truly love which also aligns with your preferences, but especially in a tiny ship or fandom, it's best to have some tact. also, if you're really that pressed for stories you wanna read, it's a great reason to get into writing 🥰

all this said, everyone needs to bitch once in a while; that's normal. healthy even. this bitching is best left in DMs, though, or at the very least, on your blog, out of the tags. and don't let haterism consume you!!

OH! i almost forgot. send asks! send asks to people in the fandom that you think are interesting and nice. send asks for ask games when people reblog them, and send asks about fics or characters or fanart to other people in the fandom. if you're very shy, you can do this on anon, and then interact with the answer once it's posted by replying or reblogging.

okay. let's say that you've been engaging with fanart by reblogging and leaving your thoughts in the tags, engaging with fic by reblogging with thoughts in the tags and / or commenting on AO3, and interacting with other people in the tags for the characters and ships you like. and, best of all, sending asks! doing all of this, you'll get a sense for which people you might get along with, and who might be receptive to your friendship. if someone is replying to your tags, following you back, interacting with your posts, and so on for a while, that's a great opportunity to DM them!! (it's fine to keep things to asks and replies for a while if that feels easier, of course!)

once you have a person in mind that you would like to DM, it's up to you how you want to reach out. i'm an impulsive and somewhat outgoing person online, so in my early days in the DN fandom (and my last fandom) i would often just spontaneously DM people whose vibes i liked and introduce myself (hi, i'm neallo, i hope this isn't strange but i just wanted to pop in and introduce myself!). i would then let them know that i liked their blog, or their art, or their writing, often leaving a specific thought about the item in question ("i totally agree with your post about [character], he WOULD say that" or "i love how cute / pretty / impish you make [character] in your art" or "your writing style is so compelling, i've really been enjoying your fics"). i don't do this very much anymore, but it's not because it doesn't work. it's just that i have a finite amount of time and there are a lot of people in meronia now T__T so, generally, i only go out of my way to reach out to people i've already interacted with a good deal through posts / asks / comments on AO3 (aka people who i feel would possibly like to be friends with me).

you technically can cold DM people if you really like their blog or writing or fanart. i personally don't mind a DM from someone i haven't interacted with before, but i do always have to take a second to make sure they're not a child and not a spam bot or something. some people are put off by being messaged directly by someone they've never interacted with before, though, so i think it's generally best practice to kind of get a feel for things on the public side of tumblr before sending someone a message!!

now, a word of self-compassion and general caution. first: not everyone will reply to you. others may reply at first, but fall off (i am really bad about this myself, just because life has been getting in the way a whole lot recently). sometimes people are busy; sometimes they are just not really actively seeking friends or conversation; sometimes they maybe just don't think they'll vibe with you! it doesn't reflect poorly on you if someone doesn't respond to you or try to befriend you. it can be sad, or a little disappointing, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. don't take it personally, and try not to feel too dejected or hurt over it.

one more thing. ideally, this will not happen at all, but if it does, hopefully it will be seldom. in my experience, it has been very seldom! the thing is this: someone might be unkind to you. i personally am not that good at figuring out when someone is being mean to me unless they're insanely obvious about it! i will make excuses for someone doing or saying hurtful things several times ("i'm sure they didn't mean it like that" or "they're just kidding around") before i realize that they're being kind of an asshole. i don't actually think this is a bad trait, though-- i like to assume good intent from other people, and only rescind that assumption when i'm proven wrong. i only mention this to tell you: if someone routinely makes you feel bad about yourself, your art, your writing, or your thoughts, maybe they're not the best person to befriend.

Anyways, I wanna ask you (but I’m sure you have) if you’ve read the script for the film? There are a couple of scene between Igor and Ani that are quite different from the final cut, and I was wondering what are your thoughts on that.

For me, reading the script was surreal because I love the film so much and to read the very material they worked on was truly a privilege. Just like reading any script, its very technical, with very little emotions or any thought detail of the characters. When it comes to the scenes shared between Igor and Ani, I was disconnecting them from what I watched. Igor was more outspoken, and less shy towards Ani. While Ani was pretty much the same, lol. Which is good cuz that means Mikey delivered.

The scenes I’m talking about is the deleted scene on the plane where Igor ask Ani what’s her favorite color, and that strange “Netflix and chill” comment, which I still dont get why he said it so randomly (maybe thats the point to distract her. But context wise, why is it there. lol).

And last, the additional dialogue of Igor at the very last scene of the film in the car.

These scenes in particular changes my characterization of Igor. Maybe cuz again he’s more outspoken in the script, and because the film is a bit vague about Igor’s personality, it makes me believe that Igor have and is possible of this side of being straight forward.

Thanks for your kind words, Anon — sometimes I feel like I'm just rambling on here, but it's nice to know it makes sense to people. (And I'd like to think that Sean Baker would be delighted by our level of over-analysis, mostly because it means that we enjoyed the movie enough to keep talking about it so much!)

But to answer your question, yes, I have read the script. Reading it through felt a little weird, because it's obviously an early draft, but still, you can see the framework of the story underneath and how it ended up shaping the final version of the film.

When it comes to the interactions between Ani and Igor, though, the differences between the script and the film are really interesting.

In their first scenes, the script depicts Igor as more of a typical, uncaring henchman: he physically grabs and pushes her to stop her from leaving the house (whereas in the movie he just puts his arms out to keep her from getting past him), he's more vocal about how crazy and out of control she is, and he doesn't offer her that congratulations on her marriage like he does in the movie.

And even the apology he offers her in Toros's car is framed a little less empathetically. In the movie, he says, “Sorry for what was happening back there,” and then starts to say in Russian “How could I have imagined...” In contrast, the script has the first line, but the second (in English, not Russian) is “It didn't have to be that difficult,” which could be read as if he's putting some of the responsibility for what happened onto her.

But I think the two scenes you mentioned — on the plane and then the final scene in Igor's car — are the ones where the differences are the most distinct. The “Netflix and chill?” line seems just strange, honestly — was it because they were seated side-by-side on a couch and he was trying to be funny? (But it's weird, because he didn't display that kind of suggestive humor at any other point in the movie, so why would he start then?) And then the exchange about her favorite color — which descends into her accusing him of trying to make a move on her and then calling him a liar when he denies it — also seems tonally off, given that the focus of the scene is meant to be on the Ivan-Galina-Nikolai interaction and Ani's interruption to tell Ivan that she's happy to be divorcing him. (The difference between script-Igor's direct “You're not my type” versus movie-Igor's recognition of how upset Ani looks after being rejected by/rejecting Ivan and silently pouring her a drink is also pretty striking. By that point in the movie, he's been watching over her for a while, his admiration (and growing feelings) clear, so it would make little sense for him to be saying anything that direct about how he's not interested in her.)

In the car scene, there are some small differences at the beginning (Ani thanks him for the ring in the script, which she doesn't do in the movie), but it's Igor's reaction to her straddling him and her violent outburst that represent the greatest departure. In the movie, he's totally silent the whole time, but the script has him asking “What are you doing?” and after the outburst, yelling at her in Russian, “Stop! Stop! Just fucking stop! What is wrong with you!” And even though he does still hold her as she cries, his last words seem to reveal a much stronger sense of judgment and condemnation. Movie-Igor, on the other hand, is at first confused and bewildered, but puts those feelings aside to acknowledge Ani's distress and accept and comfort her.

I think it's clear that in the time between the first draft of the script and then the filming and editing of the movie, Sean Baker (most likely in consultation with Yura Borisov) made a conscious decision to shift the characterization of Igor, making him more reserved, observant, kind, and empathetic. Maybe it makes him into a character we like more or want to root for more — or maybe the idea was to turn the stereotype of the henchman a little more on its head. I think it also works to make Igor into a character that is meant to directly contrast with Ivan, in that we like him more and more as the movie progresses (because we see what's beneath the stereotype), versus Ivan, whose true (terrible) colors end up being fully revealed.

As for your comment about how the scenes change your own characterization of Igor, I can see how it might (I mean, it's hard to unread a script), but I think if the intention of the director and the actors was to have the movie version be the final version, then my inclination is to go with that. The script was a draft — a good draft, but not the finished vision. But there is certainly the question about a more outspoken side of Igor's personality that he doesn't show in the action of the film. Maybe it's a language barrier question, and he doesn't feel as comfortable being as outspoken in English. Maybe there are times when he's more direct and outspoken — I for one would love to entertain the premise of a very drunk, very direct, very flirty Igor (another fic idea for another time, perhaps?).

Anyway, just my thoughts. Thanks for the question!

book is: about a not nessisarily romantic but definitely bizzarely close feel free to read it however you want im not making anyone kiss project whatever you want onto them, story of a bunny girl superhero with a murder problem , and her wholesome supervillain bestie who wants nothing more than to save her, with fun themes such as found family , memory loss, and of course, miserable children, also the supervillain is a theater kid with a heart of gold and a cup of tea <3

a mix of silly and serious, I put a lot of my heart into it! And it would have been done sooner, but well i kind of got kidnapped so that kind of slowed down most of my writing and other projects for a bit there, it was only for an afternoon, no one got hurt, but it was kind of weird. it was a sort of well intentioned kidnapping though and the lady who did it is getting professional help now which is great, so im just happy she and everyone else is okay :)

I made this book wanting to make a fun world and characters and setting and stuff anyone could enjoy and find interesting, and I think the magic system in place in this lil superhero book (based somewhat on magical girl anime-) will be a fun setting for fanfics and fanart and stuff, and im SUPER excited to see if anyone makes ocs or anything for it because that'd be super cool and I love seeing other people be creative-

half-baked georgenap analysis re: banter and expressing remorse

im talking to my friend about this and i wanna go into a little bit more about the banter episode and sapnap's constant berating of george for how he treats people because i think i understand his frustration but i also understand why these situations happen and where the dissonance is and distrust stems from

sapnap has known george for a long time and he's one of george's best friends. it's pretty safe to assume he's around the number 2 slot, yeah? dream is first but sapnap is easily top 5 if not number 2 when it comes to george's friendships. they've been close for years, with a lot of quality time together (note: most intimate of which alone) to learn each other and the way they behave in reaction to different things. the issue is that the majority of this learning was online only where they were with friends or one on one and that can really warp one's perception of how a loved one can behave in reaction to negativity

i said this in my last post: george is incredibly multi-facetted and i dared to say multi-faced. there's a different george for every situation he finds himself in because he's quite versatile and adaptable perhaps because he can be a bit of a people pleaser but also because he just doesn't take things too seriously. he goes with the flow and has his set ways of acting but it's constantly changing and shifting depending on the stimulus (people, places, etc) around him

i think sapnap hates this. this is where i think the issue is.

sapnap is kind of stuck. i haven't really watched his solo content as much as i have with george but from my understanding of sapnap he's pretty much the way he seems: kindhearted, polite, excitable, a little shy, a little easy to rile up, but he's always pretty much the same person and vibe. whereas george behaves differently constantly. i don't want to be too repetitive of my other post but this is drawn from how other ccs have spoken about him so vastly: 'george is a sweetheart' vs 'george is a menace' vs 'george is just a guy'

sapnap has a favourite george. the one who talks to him quietly in comfychat about feelings and speaks for him when he's anxious and lets him carry him around at home and goes out with him to get food or just wander around whereever they are because they're together and their quality is really important to him. the george he's with alone who has the volume turned down is a george he feels comfortable with and understands, right?

so then we get sapnap now witnessing george and how he interacts with others, and we're going to focus on karl with the moped accident. something bad happened to someone they both care deeply about, and they, as two very different people, handle things like this differently.

george expresses guilt through expressions and quietly watching to make sure they're okay. he feels the remorse so heavily but he can't articulate how to make it better so he just shows it

but sapnap says sorry and helps people back on their feet. so he sees george react in his normal way and it pisses him off because he would have handled it differently. and the thing is they both care about karl A LOT. so george is drowning in guilt, sapnap is pissed that he's not expressing it 'correctly', and karl is just bleeding on the ground trying to explain to them that he can process george's remorse regardless of the outward expression sapnap needs to process it, and that just makes sapnap even more angry i think.

because george is always a different george, and other people can read through him when he lets them so he doesn't need to use his words because the other ways he expresses it may be more subtle, but people make the effort to meet him halfway and forgive him regardless of the lack of outright apology

but sapnap is always sapnap. his whole life he's stepped up to help and said sorry and proved that he feels guilty with words of affirmation and acts of service, while george just makes faces and gets stuck in his murky head of bad feelings. he just wants it to go away and be happy george again, so he doesn't apologize or dwell on the issue, he wants to move on and make it up to that person with something he's more acquainted with: jokes, smiles, sunshine stuff

maybe the way sapnap sees it is this: he grovels, and george doesn't, and no matter what they're both forgiven in the end. from his perspective he does more than george to earn forgiveness, and this is a fact in his life that frustrates him. i think it warps in his head that george isnt doing enough, instead of doing it differently. so he gets mad and wants george to do the sapnap thing instead of the george thing but that's never gonna happen. because george is george and sapnap is sapnap and as we all know they're incredibly different in all aspects of their personality and self (it's one of the reasons i like smashing them together like barbie dolls so much)

cool blue and burnt orangey-red, two very different colours for two very different people. george is passive in pain and sapnap is assertive and maybe even aggressive in his comfort for whatever the pain is that was caused, it's just a matter of them learning that their feelings are the same and thats why their forgiveness is the same. but it looks so different in progress and i think george is unwilling to change while sapnap is being a little short-sighted. an immovable object vs an unstoppable force.

- my hobies incule art, i have a lot of sketchbooks and majority of my lessons are done by doodling and getting told off by my the teacher cause i dont pay attention, but i still carry on. i also like to make jewelry such as bracelets/neclases, their mainly beaded but their still cute to wear and i like to make bracelets for close people

- (just for extra info here →) im mentaly unstable and have severe attached issues as well as issues with family on every aspect. id like to get better, however i just end up going down a loop hole so i cant/dont which makes everything much harder than it needs to be.

- my energy gets drained QUICK so im mostly a listener rather than a speaker when it comes to social interactions, however i do have my days where i can be jumpy and almost euthoric and talk like my life depends on it with a lot of excitement

- also i can get sudden motivation that i end up reorganising my room, one day it'd look that then after 4 months itd look like this. i tend to do spontanious little things here and there when im in a good mood and that includes in dying/cutting my hair. also ive pierced myself 6x with thumb tacks and their all healed very nicely. i have 9 ear piercings in total.

- never was much of an academic person in school, but i tend to be smart outside of it and i find enjoyment in observing people and using my own thoughts rather than finding sources

- i wont call myself shy, maybe at first sure but as i get comfortable i can go all out and i dont mind in making the first move as long as i get the same energy back, otherwise if that energy isn't given then ill forget all about them.

- i can be extremely clingy when i want to be, i hold back in latching onto someone on a daily basis. i wanna hold someone's hand, be on their back like a bag, and just overall connect soles. im touch starved and overall I can be very affectionate physically, though I'm awful at using my words for affection.

tbh im no expert on starting on tumblr hehe. i started almost a year ago (aug ‘22) and tbh i started just bc i got an itch to write again and specifically for f1 and i knew the community existed so i just tried it out really !

ive been very lucky to have made mutuals w some really sweet people and tbh its all about reaching out and interacting ! i loved reading other ppls works and appreciating them (reblogs, tags, comments). its a perfect way to make connections. also i would say to not be shy and to reach out to the accounts you like (it helps if you wanna talk about a common interest, their posts, etc to ease into it) ! everybody ive talked to so far even if its in passing is so sweet. my dms are also always open if anybody wants to start a chat <3

as for writing ive been writing on and off since middle school, but ive always loved language and literature class. i would say a good way to start writing is to first read what you enjoy and the writers you enjoy. once you have kind of a grasp i would say to always just start giving it a go ! there are so many prompts available on tumblr as well as accounts giving writing tips. two accounts i can recommend are @corvase (for prompts and tips) or @novelbear (for prompts) !

for more technical-ish tips i sometimes search up words in the thesaurus, google way things are described, to get a better grasp as to what i want to say and how i want to say it. i also write differently depending on what i want to say/convey.

writing takes time and this includes your style, the way you express yourself, so don’t limit yourself (also your writing at first might not be the same as you envision it but its okay! you slowly get there).

sometimes, writing is also about patience, i have so many times taken countless of hours to write things to finally get it to where i want (and sometimes i dont get there at all).

at the end of the day writing should also be for your own enjoyment so take your time and write what makes you happy <3

i was rambling about this on ig yesterday and i wanna ramble abt it again here but like, so karly comes off very strong at times (the whole “riding tav til they see stars” bit and like she said it herself that she feels what she feels and doesn’t feel the need to hide it) and maybe even a little clingy but isel is way more unhinged and insecure i think. like towards the end of act 2 she’s well aware they’ve been so busy dealing with ketheric and the shadowcurse that like yknow… banging your gf has unfortunately not been at the top priority of the to-do list but still even knowing that she’s like… “um… we havent fucked in like two days 👉🏽👈🏽 do you even still like me?”

even tho they’ve been holding hands and being gross pda any chance they get since she got her second engine upgrade, like during the guantlet of shar trials while shart is fighting for her life theyre in the background waiting like

but i think theyre similar in that kind of insecurity cuz like the morning after the act 2 scene kar is like “you still like me right?” LIKE YALL ARE BOTH SO ATUPID AUUUGHH SHUT UPPPP DUMMIES

theyre both out of practice tho, kar becuz she didnt really get to experience real relationships like that becuz like she said, just as her life was starting she got sent to avernus so she didnt get a chance to grow out of her “if it moves climb aboard dating strategy” and so while she’s definetely loud and proud and wears her heart on her sleeve she defs got a bit of insecurity (and its so cute im sorry dhdhdhd when she gets all shy or embarassed and awkward IM LIKE AUGHHHHH MOE MOEEEE like if you talk to her second in the act 1 tiefling party and she’s like all awkwardly like “if you wanted to meet up later maybe we could.. meet up.. later..” HFHDJDJDJ LIKE DAMN I CANT NOT WANT HER AFTER THAT LIKE WHY ARE YOU NERVOUS BBY)

and isel’s insecurities stem from also the fsct she’s out of practice, like it hasnt been 10 years as long as kar, but it has been a few years since her last relationship, since her last even regular interaction/socializing with others, and she does worry she’s a lot more inexperienced than karlach and worries she’ll be put off by that (cuz isel’s only been with two people before kar and if her “if it moves” dating strategy is anything to go by then like she’s prolly more experienced at that part lmao but like even that!! like they balance each other out? like isel’s got the experience with being in a long term relationship, but not as much with sex and karly is the opposite) but also just cuz isel knows she’s not the best at socializing and stuff like that and that her actions/words often get misunderstood like auuughhh

school is almost finishing and i just submitted my last coursework for the school year so rn my class is just kinda doing anything! idk about other colleges but since i go to college in the UK we don’t do junior stuff and all, instead we have levels and (level 1,2,3) and here you can apply based on how good your grades are (if they were really good you can immediately start in level 3, if not you start lower) i’m currently doing level 3 year 1 (level 3 has two years over here) but i’m still figuring out if i wanna do this next year or just apply for an apprenticeship (basically getting education while also getting work experience)
