March 8, 2020.  A message for a friend I never shared (+ mini blog post)

Routine sweeping of my google drive.  Not sweeping because there’s over five hundred docs, probably (almost all of them stories + pieces of fiction + journal type thought jots + poems).

I wrote this at 12 am.  It’s just over three pages long in docs.  I shared it (w/o sending an email notification) to the person this was for.  When I woke up and remembered what I’d done, I unshared it.  I don’t think he ever saw it.

Disclaimer: I don’t have any romantic feelings for him.  People have thought so and that just makes me feel awful (since he has a girlfriend).  I had a crush on him when I was in seventh grade (he was a freshman).  I’m a rising junior now, and he’s going off to college.  An iVy lEaGuE boy <3

Writing remains unchanged except for a ‘wh’ I corrected to ‘with’ and another typo (I was really tired (+ sad) when writing this).

I think the word love is kind of fake now, I do.  Everyone uses it so casually and I’m guilty of the same thing.  Idk why I’m writing like… this.

Okay.  Hi.  I’m feeling a lot of things right now and, to be frank, I don’t like it.  It’s strange.  And weird.

One: dependence.  I have friends, yeah, and one go-to friend who’s pretty much always there for me when I need her.  But when I don’t need her, like in school, there are these hurtful, biting comments, these eye rolls that really really hurt.  I’m just not as comfortable with her as I used to be.  And I have other friends, sure, but not ones that I can rely on for everything.

But you?  I think I’m a bit too reliant on you.  I spoke to someone on omegle (multiple people really, but I digress), and they said not to do drugs.  Wow symbolism or whatever.  It’s not like you’re a drug per say, but I just have a really really really bad addiction.

You’re kind of like candy.  I love it but know that it’ll give me headaches after.  And in your case, or our case, it’s not like you give me a headache.  It’s me.  I really dislike that.

Let me start over.

I love you.  More than I should.  I don’t feel as much with other people.  Not as many positive emotions.  My family makes me really sad sometimes, my friends get me really annoyed.  They both can make me feel happy, but you… you make me feel like I’m on cloud nine.

Do I know what that is?  Not really.  Do I care?  No  A little bit.  I don’t like not knowing things.  And yet…. I digress.

I don’t want you to feel like you have to do anything about it or text me more or whatever but you are important to me.  That’s it.  You are important to me.

You are so important to me.  I kid you not, everything you do affects me.  When you say something that isn’t exactly positive, my mind reels over it for hours.  If you ghost in the middle of a conversation, I obsessively check my phone.  I realize this behavior may be displayed in psychopaths and yet… I trust you’ll stick with me.

Maybe it’s because you treat me so well.  I’m not sure.  You entertain my questions, you listen to me.  I’ve been called annoying my whole life, my family tunes me out, I’ve developed the habit of talking to myself.  People jokingly point out that I talk too much about myself, I talk too much in general.  They think it doesn’t hurt.  It does.

But you make me feel heard.  Most of the time.  And then other times I remember that I’m not the only thing in your life.  You have other friends, a girlfriend, other priorities.

I love you so much I would never want to hurt you.

But I forget I’m not as important to you as you are to me.  I care about you so much it hurts.  My stomach tightens every once in a while when I text you.  Not quite butterflies but something else.  A snake, maybe, squeezing my insides.  It makes me feel like I’m about to explode.  This hasn’t ever happened to me before.

And I talk about you too.  Probably too much.  My friends once joked and said that if you broke up with your girlfriend it would be my fault.

I didn’t like that.

I suppose you’re on my mind more often than you should be, but I can’t help it.  And maybe this sounds like a love letter— and I guess it’s because it is— just not that kind of love.  A special kind.  A kind I’ve never experienced before.  A kind reserved just for you.

It’s really late.  I’m sorry you had a bad day.

I’m not quite sure what to say anymore but I know there’s lots.

I think that you probably don’t know the effect you have on me.  I don’t either.  Maybe it’s because I’m going through a particularly rough time dealing with… who knows what.  It’s not a simple mood swing though.  I’ve been feeling… off… for ages.

Everyone says I’m so happy.  I like that they think I am.  I love to make others smile!  And with you I’m always so negative.  I’m sorry.  I just feel guilty being sad with others.  And I’m tired of being sad alone.  I don’t like where my thoughts go.  No extremes but… it’s lonely.  And overwhelming.

When you’re here for me I feel like I can be myself.

But in school.

I’m sorry for always insisting you don’t love me.  I know you do or at least I hope you do since you always say so.  It’s just that whenever you’re near I want to cling onto you.  You’re my lifeline.  You simultaneously drive me insane while being the only thing that keeps me sane.  Somewhat sane.  Every time you leave, I hurt a little bit.  And it’s not your fault.

I tried, for a bit, getting rid of you.  Decided it was unhealthy.  Unhealthy to love someone the way I love you.  But I was too weak.  I muted your notifications, I didn’t start conversations, I took you off my private story.  It only made me check more, wait more anxiously, feel more alone.  And you hadn’t even noticed.  I don’t think you knew you were even taken off.  That’s okay.  I’m not sure what I was expecting.  And it’s fine you don’t always start conversations.  You kind of are now though.

When you told me you kind of missed me the other day, I smiled.  Really wide.

And I remember last year, maybe.  I gave you a hug and immediately you’d asked what was wrong.  We barely talked last year and yet you knew.  You could tell, better than anyone else.  I’d spent the previous night crying, but I didn’t want you to know.  I think I told a joke and you laughed.

And another time it happened, where I hugged you and you asked what was wrong.  But that time nothing was.  And I laughed because I realized it was so you.  To maybe act like you don’t care about me but then really be there when I need it.

But sometimes it feels like you’re embarrassed of me.  I’ll hug you and you’ll pull away, tell me you have to go.  And I feel like a burden.  Boy if I haven’t been called one before…

And I’m sorry for calling so much.  It’s annoying, I’m annoying.  I know.  And I’m sorry.

I don't text that often.

A tedious task— just see each other at school.  I prefer to call, as well, so my hands are left free and I can do other things.

But I text you a lot.

Also.  When I called you.  And you called me [a nickname only family + close friends call me].  And asked what was wrong.  It felt nice.

But I think I’m too attached.  I don’t like it.  I don’t like how I say ‘I love you’ without having punched you beforehand.  I don’t like how real it is.

It sounds like love, doesn’t it?  Like I’m in love.  Maybe I am.  I think I’m in love with the idea that maybe someone really will always be there for me.  But I’m not in love with you.  Not like some people say.

Again, I’ve spoken about you.  You’re on my mind a lot.

I didn’t even end with a period.  I shared it with him, at 1 am I believe, thinking I’d update it every so often.  He wouldn’t have gotten a notification when I shared it, so I figured if he saw it, he saw it.

I would constantly tell him I loved him more and every time he argued back, saying he cared more for me, in my head I’d be screaming: “no, I love you more” because it really felt like it.  Still does.  I’m not sure where I got these trust issues, but they’re here and they’re mine.  He wouldn’t hear me out, so I had to type it.  I can tell him anything, I know that.  He’s like the brother I never had except we’re not always at each other’s throats like many brothers and sisters are.

My name is kind of a combination of my granny’s name (Mary-Anne) and the surname of the man my aunt married (Lee) ((unusual way of deciding on a name but that’s the explanation I was always given when I was younger)) but tbh I mostly think I was named after LeAnn Rimes bc my mom was obsessed with her around the time I was born 🌙

2) When was the last time you cried?

Yesterday morning, I got sick n had a panic attack :(

Top 20 Favourite Alt-J Songs

The title is pretty self explanatory so I’m just gonna jump right in

(Also I’ll be briefly explaining what I like about each one, so another long post. Feel free to skip through if you just want to know the songs)

20. Left Hand Free

Generally a really nice bop. It is arguably their most poppy song, and quite different from most of their other music, but it’s still recognisably them, which is what I love. Honestly all I have to hear is the guitar intro and I’m already dancing like an idiot

ALSO there’s a really cute interview/live performance that the band did on KEXP  (I’ll insert the link at the end if I can be bothered) where they’re playing this song and in the bit where it goes back to “ain’t shady baby I’m hot”, Gus starts clapping to the beat and makes Joe laugh so much that he can’t even sing it properly and it’s v cute

(Also the little “speakeasy” about halfway through is sexy ngl)

19. Interlude 3 ❦

Strange choice I know, but hear me out. I love the simplicity of this interlude, because it’s literally just 58 seconds of piano and quiet vocalising over the top, but it WORKS SO WELL. Plus it’s placed between a heavier song and a more gentle song on the album, so it’s an interesting way of transitioning.

18. Taro

I have such good memories of the first time I heard Taro. I associate it with getting up early in the morning and going for a walk, as cheesy as that sounds - it just generally fills me with so much happiness. I think it’s very well composed, and that INSTRUMENTAL!! I love it!!!

Not to mention the lyrics about the two war photographers (Robert Capa and Gerda Taro) are very interesting. In general I just really love the different topics that Alt-J write about in their songs.

17. Arrival In Nara

This is such a beautiful, peaceful and gentle song. The piano in the first half sets the song up so nicely, and it’s complemented well with the really light vocals. Especially when Joe and Gus harmonise for the “though I cannot see I can hear her smile as she sings”....I’m dead

16. Intro (This Is All Yours version)

 Even though this song does take some time to build up, I’d definitely say it’s worth the wait. The layers are built up so gradually and effectively, and by the time the drums come in, it’s just....it’s just amazing. Wow.

15. Ms

I actually used to skip this song when I first listened to An Awesome Wave, not because I didn’t like it, just because it didn’t really stand out to me that much. WELL. 

You know that meme that’s been recreated a million times that says “when you listen to that one song on the album you always skip and it’s actually fire”? Yeah, that’s Ms. The lyrics are beautiful, the a cappella on “the dark seeks dark” works so nicely, and the instrumental after “the nights of all my youth pressed into one glass of water/the shadow burns across like embers tide paper” is so incredibly relaxing.

14. 3WW

I remember one day early in 2017, I said to myself, “it’d be really nice to see Alt-J live, but they haven’t made any music in like, three years. Oh well.” 

THE. LITERAL. NEXT. DAY. My friend texted me saying that they’d released a teaser for a new song. So after running round my house hyperventilating and whisper-screaming (don’t worry, I was home alone), I went onto YouTube and listened to the 30-second teaser of 3WW. 

AND MY MIND WAS BLOWN. Even more so when I listened to the full song. Gus’ vocals in the beginning are AMAZING - so glad he finally got a solo. Ellie Rowsell’s vocals halfway through are so perfectly placed, and she was definitely the right woman for the job. The instrumentation is absolutely beautiful. Overall the song is just a masterpiece.

13. Hunger Of The Pine

The first song I ever heard from This Is All Yours. I love the way it begins, with Joe singing without any accompaniment apart from that repeating note. It’s another song that builds up nicely, especially by the time the drums come in, and that Miley Cyrus sample?! I had no idea it was her, it just blends in so well.

This is definitely the sort of song you should listen to with headphones on, preferably also with your eyes closed. It’s such an experience and it really takes me places.

(Also shoutout to Gus and his awesome French skills towards the end)

12. The Gospel Of John Hurt

This song is quite similar to HOTP, in the way that it focuses on layers and starts in a very simplistic way before building up. I really like the drums in the second verse and chorus, and the tempo change right after that. I also thought it was cool that the first time Joe sings “Jeremiah” it’s kind of gentle and airy, but then the second time it’s more like “JeremiAHHHHHH” idk it’s cool

And every chorus after the tempo change just makes me feel like my soul has been awoken because W O W

11. Dissolve Me

The first few months of 2017 were a bit difficult for me, and An Awesome Wave as a whole really helped me through them. However, Dissolve Me stood out because of the line “she makes the sound, the sound the sea makes, to calm me down”. My difficulties were to do with my anxiety, and listening to this song helped me to relax like you wouldn’t believe. So it holds a special place in my heart for that reason.

My favourite part has to be the ending when Joe and Gus are harmonising with the “ohhh” and then the chords from the intro come back, and they take it in turns to sing “she makes the sound the sea makes, knee deep in the north”. Absolutely spectacular, even more so live.

10. Something Good

This song definitely lives up to its title. As far is I’m concerned, if you tell me that you can listen to the drums in the intro and not want to dance, you’re a liar. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.

The vocals in the verses are honestly so groovy, and the choruses are somewhat gentle, but they still make me want to get up and dance. The drums throughout the whole song also give it a really nice vibe.

9. Interlude 1/The Ripe & Ruin ❦

I have a surprisingly strong connection with this song, and I’ll explain why. The lyrics are generally about finding balance in your life, but they more specifically describe a woman who constantly counts her steps while walking and makes sure to “abide by the law that she herself has set”. One of my idiosyncrasies has always been pretty much exactly this, and I’ve always thought I was weird for doing it, so this interlude makes me feel lot less alone. Plus the lack of music makes it feel much more intimate.

8. In Cold Blood

AN ACTUAL BANGER. That’s pretty much all I need to say.

The way it instantly begins. The fact that the numbers in the beginning are backwards binary code for ∆, meaning it’s the world’s most cryptic name drop. The line “all above crowd around so fucking loud”. The brass in the chorus. The way the music at the end of the chorus just instantly stops, Joe sings “in cold blood”, and then the music comes right back. I LOVE IT ALL.

7. Tessellate 

Tessellate was the song that led me to discover Alt-J, thanks to my extreme obsession with the Ellie Goulding cover that spent a long time being my favourite song ever. I will admit that my younger, unappreciative self wasn’t huge fan of the original song initially, partially because I saw some of the dodgy looking people in the music video lip syncing to the song and naturally thought they were the band. But over time, I decided to give Alt-J another go, and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. And I obviously LOVE Tessellate now.

6. Adeline

I’m pretty sad I didn’t get to see this song live, but listening to it at home with headphones is a magical enough experience. It has such powerful lyrics, the way everything gradually builds up is just so beautiful (yes I say that a lot, but they do it a lot okay), it’s just incredible. Especially that end bit where Gus is singing “ohhhhh my Adeline” and you hear the “YAAA YAAA YAAA” over the top. MIND=BLOWN.

5. Matilda

I can honestly say that it was love at first listen with Matilda. Given that I’d been introduced to Alt-J with Breezeblocks and Tessellate, it was nice to listen to something that was a little more light and gentle (in my opinion). I love the way the song references the film Léon, and the drum beat right at the start of the first verse is so peaceful and nice to listen to.

4. Fitzpleasure

When I first got into Alt-J and I’d only heard An Awesome Wave, Fitzpleasure was actually my number 1 favourite song of theirs. I obviously still love it, given that it’s now number 4. The bass line (and guitar in general) is so COOL!! It’s such a groovy sounding song and I love the way it switches between Joe singing a cappella and heavy bass. 10/10.

(P.S. yes I know what the song is about, and no, we are not discussing that today.)

3. Pleader

My favourite Relaxer song, the music video for which has made me cry on multiple occasions. The introductory violins, the way everything is layered, the vocals, the lyrics, basically this song just makes me feel every single emotion at once and it gives me goosebumps and it’s AMAZING. What a killer song to end an album with.

2. Bloodflood

This may come as a surprise, but I actually took ages to listen to this song. I didn’t actually listen to An Awesome Wave from start to finish, I kinda just put it on my laptop and listened to each song gradually, which I now realise was not the best idea. But HOLY MOLY. BLOODFLOOD.

I don’t think I need to say much about this song, because every Alt-J fan knows why it’s amazing. However, it is only number 2, because in terms of personal connections and meaning, there is only one song that can top it.

1. Nara

WOW. Where to even start. The first time I listened to This Is All Yours (actually from start to finish this time), Nara just stuck out to me for some reason. I have always been a huge supporter of the LGBT+ community, and hearing a song about a gay relationship is just really nice for me. It’s incredibly powerful due to its description of how difficult it is to be gay in a situation where that isn’t truly accepted. 

As well as that, the repetition of “hallelujah, Bovay, Alabama” at the end always hits me right in the feels. It’s such a simple motif, yet it works so well as an outro, especially if you understand why they chose those specific words.

1. Any scars?

Um, I have two on my head, right behind my ears at different heights from my two different cochlear implant surgeries to install the internal parts into my head so the external processors will work. When my hair is short it looks like someone purposefully buzzed a line through my hair there, lol, but it’s natural from the surgery when I was 7 and 11 years old respectively.

And since I heal very well, my scars are real hard to see. I still have a faint one on my thumb, at the base of the last joint to the front of it, and one along the left side of my middle finger (both fingers on my right hand) that is still rough and keeps peeling a lot even now, years after the event.

Those I got from a random-ass exploding lightbulb that I was screwing in, had MADE SURE the lamp was off both at the wall and at the lamp itself (though I didn’t unplug it because I didn’t think I needed to…), but nope I had screwed it in one too many times, saw a BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHT, and then it exploded, glass everywhere, and somehow only got hit on my index finger, middle finger, and thumb. ONLY there! Even to this day my engineer mother is completely baffled as to how that happened.

4. Kissed anyone?

Yes. My first ever kiss[es] was with an enthusiastic sloppy and awkward boy during a yearly dance when I was in highschool (I was unschooling and going to the Voyagers Homeschooling Co-op and they hosted yearly dances). Five French kisses are not my idea of a good first kiss ever!

My second ever person to kiss was … well. *blush and funny deadpan with crossed arms* He knows who he is. Since apparently I keep totally forgetting it somehow until he mentions it in a teasing fashion and yes we did date for a short while there before breaking up and remaining friends.

My third and remainder of kisses are thoroughly claimed by my handsome, hot boyfriend. -w-

5. Coke or Pepsi?

Coke. ALL. THE. WAY.

Blame my awesome grandmother (R.I.P.) who had 4 pm be coca cola time every day. :D She got me on coke early. …NOT COCAINE! Yeesh. Dirty minds. She also introduced me to my love of dragons and she was awesomely supportive and adoring of my artwork. :3 Since she was hard of hearing from old age and I was born hard of hearing, we got along well with having the TV on a comfortable loudness (for us). x3

6. Someone you hate?

IDK… Hmm… I’m not one to really hate people. It’s such a strong emotion… I always thought of it as a “I want you to instantly die, right here and right now!” kind of emotion. So I don’t really hate people.

…I DO know of someone I would… honestly NOT be sad if she died. Considering she caused a hellava LOT of suffering and torment for my friend. I’d be sad because my friend would be sad, BUT I wouldn’t be sad because I actually missed her or regretted her death in any way.

7. Best friends?

Oh gosh. :3 Off the top of my head @destan-of-the-shadows and @faes-hiding-place :D my boyfriend counts too! Two RL friends I can meet with at times are more friends than “best” friends but I still count them as my friends because we’ve been friends since like 5th or 6th Grade in Middle School when we were all like 11 or 12 years old. :D I’m 22 now so see how long we’ve been friends. :D

8. Have you ever done alcohol or drugs?

NO drugs! The only thing that counts as alcohol is that couple sips of champagne at my cousin’s wedding when the servers mistakenly forgot to give us kids sparkling apple cider instead of champagne. Oops. XD We of course took great advantage of sipping as much as we could before they removed it. ;D It tasted HORRIBLE though. X_X What’s the appeal? IDK!

I drank some sips of other people’s drinks when I turned 21 but I absolutely HATE and CANNOT STAND the horribly bitter taste of alcohol (even in the sweetest mixed drinks it is strong and proud there when nobody else can taste it). Even if it’s burned off when used in a cheese fondue, that HORRIBLE bitterness remains. Bitter like the rotting corpse of a dying animal.

No thank you. I don’t ever want to drink again. X_X

9. What’s your dream job?

…. :,,,( I’ve not thought about this in ages… since I had to give up a lot of my “dream jobs” and “dream life” in order to make peace with the chronically ill life I have now. The grieving process was hard.

Goodbye my aspirations of being a geneticist, a psychologist, or even a therapist. Hello my life goals of being a professional artist and published author. :3

13. Height? 

5'10". 5 feet, 10 inches. -w- … I really wish I was taller than my dad though. *grumble* He’s 6 feet. At least I’m an inch taller than my MOM. -^-

…. *blinks and sighs* … It’d either be to be healthy again so I wouldn’t have this chronic illness (but would still keep my being deaf and hard of hearing because I LIKE THAT PART)… or to go back home, to my home world where my soul came from.

I’d rather read the book. :3 Unless the book is so horrible, that I wanna see why people think it’s so horrible, then I watch the movie because they usually try to tone things like that down. Which one do you wanna know? -x- Anxiety, hyper-focusing on a thing in my mind and then having the mind get stuck and not concentrate on anything else until I yank it off that… Staying quiet about things that affect me because I don’t want to hurt others or be a burden? Often opting to be quiet instead of confronting things that could make the relationship better in the long run? Being intensely private? Judging the strength of my relationships based on how much of my inner self I truly share? Doing subtle tests as I get to know someone to see which subject is “safe” to talk about and which I should just shut up about without them ever knowing? Over-thinking things a ton? Apparently my not needing to talk to others for a while is a weird-ass thing? … I can go on. -x-

37. Ever had a near death experience?

Yes. Waking up to being strangled by a spirit counts as that.

No, I’ve had an occasion of sleep paralysis before. I know what that feels like. You can’t move anything.

This was where I CAN move. I could move my hands and arms and everything else. It’s just something invisible and mostly intangible was strangling the life out my throat. Not from the inside choking, because I know what that feels like too. (My Life…) but from the outside suffocation and pressure and constriction on the outside of my neck.

Being strangled to near death in my spirit form by another spirit meant my physical body could feel that too, panicked the FUCK OUT at the feel of almost dying, and I literally felt my awareness fading away into a black nothingness with the faint but faltering heartbeats starting to skip and take longer and longer between each beat. Gasping and choking and then going still…

Thankfully helpful spirits got the negative one off and thoroughly destroyed it. They could heal my spirit form and with that healed, my body was able to come back too.

Never want to do that EVER. AGAIN. *shuddering* Those spirit attacks over the course of those three years were HELL on Earth. *holds self tight* 

38. Someone you can tell anything to?

My boyfriend. I’m still working on being more honest with my two close friends @destan-of-the-shadows and @faes-hiding-place but I’ve made a lot of progress over the years thankfully. :3

41. Someone you hate/dislike?

Try that woman I mentioned far above that I hate.

As for actively dislike? Trumperdink. Bigoted assholes. TRUSCUM, TERFS, SWERFS, rapists, rape-apologists, racists, ableist assholes, murderers, serial killers, homophobes, aphobes, transphobes, and all the rest of that shit. I really dislike and don’t trust the police force in this country. And the vast majority of politicians too.

42. Are you okay?

Umm…Today was a bit hellish. I survived though. *grins a bit too widely and eyetwtiches* My life is just…………. very…… VERY………. interesting. *twitch*

… I still stand by my previous opinion of laughing my ass off at the utter ridiculousness of how people try to portray those “superhero teenagers” as somehow balancing a “regular life” with “crime fighting on the side with a secret identity” and somehow NOT having the crime fighting life interfere with their regular life outside of those “special two episodes.”

Obviously written by those who have NO idea what balancing two different lives are like. X_X In my case it’s nothing so noble as a superhero identity, but it’s the difference of my spirit life and physical life.
