Bonus Battle Couple Poll: Mod being self indulgent

I love battle couples but it wouldn't be fun if I nepotismed all of my faves into bracket (also they would've been swept and I would've been sad). So have a fun bonus poll! Also I infodump a little.

Voidblade (Cradle) VS Franticshipping (Pokémon Manga) VS Winterphoenix (My OCs)

Voidblade (don't think that's the widely accepted ship name but I saw it used once and I think it's cool)

Lindon and Yerin start out as strangers who team up due to circumstance, but they grow into friends and eventually, an incredible battle couple. Cradle's a progression fantasy series where everyone's trying to get stronger. Lindon starts out behind, but once he catches up he and Yerin complement each other in battle and fight to advance together.

A key moment in their relationship is when they're forced to face each other in an arena where they can't die and once Lindon gets over his reluctance to hurt Yerin, they absolutely enjoy the opportunity to fight each other without holding back. Yerin's fighting style leans more towards brute force, while Lindon literally has a spirit in his brain who helps him strategize to win fights before they begin. The two of them fight gods together. Upend the order of the world. Lindon gifted Yerin a sword forged from body of a dreadgod and immediately afterwards gave her a ring. Battle couple of all time.

Franticshipping

Ruby gave up battling because when they met as kids because the way he'd fought had scared Sapphire, but he fights again to protect her. Sapphire dedicated herself to growing stronger because she'd felt helpless that day and didn't want to be a burden again, wanted to be able to protect herself.

When they were on Mirage Island they trained to double battle with each other with Juan, Tate & Liza. Their Kirlias evolved (Ruby's into a Gardevoir, Sapphire's into a Gallade) at the same time. They rode Rayquaza into space to destroy the meteor and save the world together, and they did it while wearing contest outfits. I love them so much.

Winterphoenix

Okay I have barely written anything for them but I rotate them in my brain constantly. Holly's a superhero who never got to live a normal life because her father trained her since birth to take over his magical guardian of order duties, and when he died when she was fifteen she dedicated herself to protecting the world with barely any time for herself. Reid was a normal guy until he ended up kidnapped by a villain trying to exploit the powers Reid did not know he had.

Holly saved him, and after some reluctance Reid became a hero and together they took down the bad guys. Since then they've been a heroic duo, and Reid's eased Holly's burden – and ironically Reid, the fire guy, taught his gf with ice powers to chill. She showed him how to be a hero. He showed her how to be human.

Fiona smirked from her throne, gently petting Hewie, who did not take his eyes off the Elf. The sceptre in her other hand identified her as the alchemist she was. With the title hers, so were the castle grounds, and all their wealth, knowledge, connections, and power.

"The previous Aureolus has only recently passed. I am his inheritor, his granddaughter. Whatever you once sought of him, you may seek from me now." From his manner of speech Fiona understood they hadn't met personally, but perhaps they had used intermediaries or corresponded, or perhaps her grandfather was one of the safekeepers of this Voidblade's unstable objects, which she also safeguarded. Any spell or potion he had bought off the man, she was also confident of being able to replicate.

stargrave update: oh my god what DIDNT happen in that one. lets see how much i can remember

so at the beginning we were kinda just attacking either the void abomination or the massive robot and trying to keep their health levels roughly the same and then just watching them attack each other. the robots other arm fell off which was fun, probably gonna get some nice scrap from that. but then listen to this right

with my two turns i landed the FINAL BLOW on BOTH OF THEM!!! i KILLED them fuckers after ages of doing very little to no damage cos i keep rolling 20s for activation/shooting then 1s or 2s for damage for some reason lmao. yeah i feel very accomplished. but also very bad for anyone in other rooms who heard "have i just killed someone?" "yes" *loud cheering*

also our sort of second in command (the guy who plays our captain hasnt been able to show up for ages) had an epic duel with a demon that was bssed on kind of like a "scoring points based on whether you choose to attack or defend and what the other person does" basis (because they have a voidblade they got chosen to do it). they smashed it! it was sad though because the demon said that all he could remember was his name and asked us to send him back to hell by killing him ndbfbf- also his last words were that he hoped his friends were okay :(

however we now have a decision to make. death showed up, because as previously stated gonk had died, but brought him back and said that we were fated to go to this planet and whatever decision we made there was fated to be the right one. but theres a three way war happening there and we have to choose who to side with

theres the gods, which would be cool as we would become essentially nobility and get diplomatic immunity for our crimes (we're smugglers) but also it does seem a bit like a trap so idk. we could also go with the demons but they did just try to kill us so. and we could go for the humans but by the sounds of it most of them are zombies anyway because of the 'redroot virus' and theyre under the protection of the belize codex which just fucked us up so. yeah decisions decisions

and the last thing is that uh. we got some foreshadowing that our ship (which is barely in one piece now) is gonna blow up after a 'landing with style' (crash) so thats fun i guess

"We had to leave Myralion behind."

The words hung heavy in the air, even moreso than they had felt in her chest. They were met with a silence as they unfolded out into the air, and Sanarissa didn't have the wherewithal to look up from her gloves hands and where they clenched onto each other.

For a moment, there was nothing except that silence. Then, Alarion breathed, a painful sound.

Then, Arryia's chair scraped against the floor when she stood and turned to pace - boots heavy in their footfalls against the floor.

They'd been the two easiest to contact; so that someone could know what Myralion had done, and that Sanarissa had left him in Grim Batol to fend for himself.

"It's all, uh, i-it's all right, Sana. We, ah, we can deal with it. Shiera made the - uh - the beacon you left, perhaps she can -"

Alarion's soft, nervous voice was overshadowed in an instant when his sister whirled back to the table.

"Are you fucking kidding me, Sanarissa? After everything - you just fucking left him?" Violet eyes roared alight with fury - she was so like her father, Sanarissa couldn't help the thought that flowed up into her mind; so angry with such a sharp turn. The shadowmancer tucked her head down, eyes squeezing shut.

"Arryia -"

"No, you shut up. You don't get to try and explain yourself to me as to why you left my brother to fucking die in Grim Batol!" The waves of the Twilight's fury crackled and pounded in the room, off the walls and swelling up inside. "You come into my dead mother's house and you tell us that you left our brother to die - and now you, what, want help? Ma and Dad trusted you with one fucking thing, Sana - help protect the clutch - and this is what you do?"

Merriele's estate breathed her around them, an echo, a ghost. Alarion had barely changed anything in his time owning it. Now, Sanarissa hated it. What would have normally been a comfort reminded her of her failure. Thin, shaking fingers curled around the jewel of her necklace.

"I'll get him back - he could still be alive," She muttered, only to earn a rough laugh in response from Arryia.

"Yes, because they absolutely have would have left him alive once they caught him. Or maybe they did; and maybe they're torturing and warping him right now," The voidblade continued, rage seering up in her.

"Arryia, please," Alarion finally managed to stammer, bringing his sister's tyrade to a halt. She glanced between her brother and Sanarissa, hands balling up into fists at her sides.

"At least find his body so we can give him a proper fucking farewell - don't leave him to be hung on hooks or carved apart. You can do that much for Ma, for Dad, since you couldn't do anything else," Arryia snapped. In the next moment, her boots echoed off the floor and the door slammed behind her when she left.

The wave of emotions crashed into Sanarissa hard enough that she flinched before she pressed her face into her hands and tried to breathe. Alarion did not leave; no, he lingered and moved closer - always quiet and concerned and overly gentle. He was her brother in all ways that mattered, and his staying meant more to her than could have been stated. 

"I'm sorry."

“You don’t have to, ah - apologize to me,” He said, and Sanarissa wavered from the support - unconditional. He was like his mother in that way; a rock to those who needed it even if he didn’t recognize that himself. Alarion spoke on, his nervous stammer filling up the silence and one hand coming to rest over her shoulder. “Arryia - she’ll, she’ll calm down. You know she has Father’s temper. I’ll, um, speak to her once she’s - once she’s had a chance to settle. Sana.”

She looked up at her name, eyes settling to meet Alarion’s own - he smiled at her and reached to take her hands between his.

“You haven’t - you haven’t failed us, you haven’t failed Mother. She, ah, she loved you - p-probably more than even us. She’d forgive you if she were here, and so do I, and I’m sure that Father will, too. Myralion - he knew what he was doing and made a, uh, made a choice accordingly. He wanted to protect you, in his own way. Always protect your family, isn’t that what Mother always told us?”

A low, choked sound left Sanarissa and in the next moment she was on her feet to wrap her arms around Alarion, her head pressed to his shoulder.

“I’ll bring him back - no matter what state he’s in, I swear,” She promised, voice muffled against the fabric covering his shoulder.

“Don’t, uh, don’t forget to bring yourself back, too. You’re just as important.”

Sanarissa never cried, or so rarely did she that it felt foreign to do so. Alarion would forgive her the moment of weakness, though. Together, they mourned a brother.

Oh, this is a fascinating interpretation.

Looking at it through that lens then, breaking a magical object to cast/release magic isn't something an elf would think of. As sacrifice is a very human way of performing magic.

Hmm, I don't think the story will go that route. A shame because the idea has potential as a sort of middle ground between what it's trying to convey and what it's actually showing us.

Oh, the Dark Magic symbol! Hmm, I can see where you're coming from.

Does kinda look like two intertwined snakes. Wonder where else you see that.

The caduceus, symbol of medicine. Well, in modern times at least.

Probably, not what voidblade or the creators of the show ment but now I can't unsee it.

The dark magic symbol is obviously designed to be more ominous than the caduceus... despite the snakes. But then, void is pretty ominous itself.

Depending on what traditions you draw from void isn't a part of the world so much as it comes before the world.

Working in tandem with a magical creature to cast magic would be amazing! The mage providing focus while the creature provides the magic is kinda how familiars work.

Sorry this is so rambly. 😅 This is fun speculation, and would make for a great AU but I don't really see it in the context of the show. 😔

That being said. I do think the relationship between dark magic and the sacrificing of enchanted objects bears more thinking about. 🤔

So, you talked about Dark Magic in The Dragon Prince. However, I think there’s more to it than first appears.

The whole ‘sacrifice _ to create magic’ happens twice but isn’t viewed as such - specifically, hatching Zym (by smashing the Primal Stone) & casting Historia Viventum at the spire (by crushing the pendant)

Personally, I view Dark Magic as a misuse of ‘void’ - which is ‘the primordial element’, being the space between the elements. After all, the symbol that appears in Callum’s dream is more like two parts coming together to create the spell. (After all, dark magic pulls a single arc from them.) The PROPER application of Drawing Magic From A Magical Creature would have them be a willing participant, instead of ripping it out by force.

I think you messaged the wrong person, I've only ever seen the first like, 2 or 3 episodes of The Dragon Prince, and I certainly haven't written an essay on it. @chronicallylatetotheparty, do you know what this person is talking about?

stargrave campaign update 2:

so we got paid for helping the rat guy then he told us to fuck off. i CANNOT take that character seriously cos the voice our dm does for him cracks us up lmao. i took a little less loot than everyone else how selfless of me 💖💖 just kidding its because i did jack shit in the previous fight it was only fair. we chose our rooms on the ship:

and then we spent half the session fucking around with a vending machine. someone headbutted it and got electrocuted, the ships ai tried to possess it but got kicked out. and an incredible out of context quote was created: "please stop trying to haggle with the vending machine"

then we finally started some more fighting! essentially, the creator of the ships ai tried to upload another ai called the belize codex because our ai (called HIUM if i remember correctly, pronounced heem) has. Very little concern for human life lmao. And this codex does in theory but the creator didnt notice that the codex HATES smugglers. And we are all smugglers ktntjtjt

so yeah the codex has become a kind of virus now, the ai is trying to get to the bridge to regain control of the ship. our captain had four enemies in his room but took three out in one turn, several have been flung out of airlocks but my character hasnt even fucking NOTICED yet because i cant do good rolls, not even perception ones

our second in command has a voidblade (essentially a lightsaber) which is cool as shit. we also have a toxic pet fish that has been named pete after the dog of the guy playing the captain. and everyone has grenades which is wonderful but im saving mine for emergencies
