Hey everyone,
The subject of this week's blog and yes I know I'm two days late but believe me this is going to be well worth it especially to the men out there here on Tumblr the ones that are single let me ask you a question have you been talking to women lately that seem a little peculiar to you they say they miss you they love you all this and that and you've only talk to them like once or twice you ask for their phone number they avoid it completely or they just make a big excuse why they can't give it to you asked to go meet them they don't that they say okay fine come you know you give an address and then you completely gets stood up because they just don't show this is an MO or otherwise known as a method of operation for these women sometimes it even as much as the first conversation or the third they will start telling you start giving you a sob story like I'm having to come out here from another country or I'm having to move to this state because I'm having to take care of sick relatives or they don't have no food or anything like that and if they want to meet if you want to meet them you have to give them gas money and no that's part of the scam then they start asking for things like gift cards $20 $40 $100 gift cards some drnominations don't even exist on some of the gift cards Google Play and steam gift cards are the most common if you have fallen prey to these women and I have twice and I'm glad I did because that was money well spent because I got to learn all kinds of shit from these people and then I'm giving you all that I have right now here are some of the red flags that show up during these conversations:
1. Their language is all wrong they'll say things like instead of saying like what did you have for breakfast to say did you take breakfast or they'll say something to the fact of their grammar being so messed up you have to like think about it before you understand what the're trying to tell you some of these women are coming from Russia some of them are from Africa some of them are from Mexico and they are all here in the United States typically in the states of the Northeast New York New Jersey there are some out west in California there are a few here in Texas and there are some just scattered everywhere.
2. They start telling you they need food but they need you to get them a $40 $50 or $100 or whatever it is gift card most commonly known as Google play or Steam do not do it because what they're doing is is they're taking the cards and selling them on the black market or on these websites that operate and they are turning in for money they're getting less than what they're supposed to get so that's why you have to give more to cover what they're not getting
3. They start asking you questions like your bank account they want you logging information do not give it to them their social security number they want to verify you through ID me id.me is legit so that would be fine except the safer way for you to do it is go ahead and go on id.me and do your own verification that way you don't have to give them nothing the less information they have on you the more likely they're going to just pass you up.
4. They ask you who you're with your cell phone number is and who your mobile carrier is this is to put you in on dating sites and for them to subscribe you to advertising that they get money for okay this is a different type of identity theft ring it is identity theft to a point but they're not using the information necessarily against you they're not even really taking a lot of money out of people's bank accounts they're only taking money out of the bank accounts that they can't get any money other ways so that's why I said do not give them anything.
5. Do not confront them either because they will always deny that they are scamming you they do that so that way they can bring you in closer to them so they can get your trust.
6. When you ask where they work and stuff besides are the probably going to tell you there they either don't have a job or it's some kind of job that's actually ridiculous for them to have they're not good liars folks they really are not you just got to learn this read between the lines with these people and like I said the biggest clue right there is the language you know things that should be plural or not plural things that are misspelled or misspelled badly the wording is confusing and I think I already said this once.
7. Always remember guys if it is too good to be true it probably is.
8. If they ask for your bank account information for the purpose of depositing money they will deposit money into your account but then they will take it and more if they tell you you can spend some of it do not touch it because that's how they get people just don't touch it call your bank tell them what's going on they will close your account and they will inevitably beginning investigation and once that happens everything they will be frozen you will not be able to have access to nothing unfortunately by extra step go to the police department I mean I know this part is going to be a waste of time because they're not going to be able to get your money back but at least let them know so that way there's some record of it.
9. Screenshot everything write everything down take notes even if you are in the middle of one of these conversations now go back as far as you can from the beginning tell you know screenshot your conversation if you need to that's fine but this is got to stop guys and we're the only ones who can fight back the FBI will help you know they they can do the Justice part they can they can make the arrest and go to court and everything but they can't do it without our help.
10. Now I will be turning people in in groups of five or more that's why I said turn the information into me as soon as I get five or six people together I will go turn them in I do have a contact there and he told me just to wait to have that many just because it would just be easier to just do them all at once so just one by one by one by one
So now you know what is going on so how you stop it that's very easy you do one thing and one thing only you make a decision and you stand by it you stand your ground you do not weaken your position at all do not show that you're weak do not give them even an inch because if you give them an inch they will not just take a mile they will take a whole football field and then they're going to tighten the grip on you and then you can't get out if you're in this position Now message me immediately and let me know and I will give you I will give you instructions this blog this this post I will I am asking everybody who reads it's please please reblog this over and over and over and over again I don't care how many times this has got to get out cuz this is very serious so far these women just in the past two and a half years have gotten over a hundred million dollars from Men 100 million definitely more than a price of a cup of coffee in the guys and the thing is it could have all been prevented.
Now for the fun part things that I have tried and has worked to oeel these women off your back besides Im no of course.
1. If you should give them your PIN number or you already have tell them that you had to get that you received a piece of software from your bank or whatever you want to lie to them if you got to every time they use the PIN code a new one is put in its place at random only you know what the new PIN code is going to be because it's going to be email to you if they ask to see proof of the emails tell them that's classified you can't show that just doesn't allow you to screenshot it because Android phones I know especially I'm pretty sure probably the same as iPhones you cannot screenshot certain screens especially on banking apps or anything has to do with money I sensitive information
2. Okay if you've given them your bank account info or your PIN number already tell them that you got notification from your bank that to be safe they're charging you an extra save $5 for the purpose of enrolling you in a new service that will automatically change your PIN number every time you use it or if you want to you you can tell him that you came across the piece of software on the internet that does the exact same thing I just told you about whichever it doesn't matter this will make them back off of you a lot because then they know that you're on to them they'll start not talking to you like they were or they'll say you know they'll be in a conversation just leave get offline you know because they know that you're on to them and they're panicking they don't know what to do so they have to call their boss to find out what to do and he has given them no answer no we do not know who the boss is by the way or where this is all being based out of I will tell you also that.
3. Okay I'm sure you're probably wondering who all these women are not 100% sure but most likely they probably were kidnapped at some point in time brainwashed and part of a human trafficking ring or a sexual tracking trafficking ring before they ended up doing this they probably don't even know who they really are but yet they managed to play in the end you know with our society because you know our society is pretty much stupid in itself I'm sorry guys but it's true and I count myself apart that
I don't think I have forgotten anything else like I said be vigilant Be watchful and do not lose your ground make a decision you stay with it cuz otherwise you're just going to put more money in their pockets I mean it's very possible that you know you know they figure well we're on to them so they're going to go ahead and just give up and close shop and move on to the next country you guys some of you I know work very hard for your money now I'm not sure if men are doing this to women or not but for you ladies if there is anything like this the same the same thing applies I mean I don't see why there are in any man involved or probably should be.
Finally it took a lot for me to admit what I admitted to you tonight I'm not very proud of what I did I'm not very proud of the fact that I let somebody well actually left2 somebody's get by me I'm usually pretty smart but that's how they operate and I will tell you tonight I have a possible number six so I don't know if number six will turn out or not she's doing a lot of the same things but she's been taking more of an actual normal approach as to the relationship part of it I'm not letting myself get involved you know emotionally or anything I'm just kind of just playing a role right now and she's not getting any money from me so I will keep you updated on that like I said anybody guys I don't care who you are I will not ask questions I will not judge please help me get these people may we may not get them all but hell we can at least put a big big enough Dent and shut down and they'll leave but we got to act quickly and we got to keep acting quickly hell I would say it's pretty ballsy if you go decide to go ahead and start seeking them out just to get them I mean you can do that if you wish unfortunately there's no reward or no money being paid but you know you are kind of owe it to your fellow neighbor your fellow just your fellow person you fellow man all right you guys good luck you got a lot of work ahead of us y'all have a great week and I'll update you as I get more information if you have any questions do not please do not hesitate to ask if I don't have the answer I will contact my person at the FBI and he will answer them for me and I will get back to you as soon as possible thank you guys have a great week.

If the Main Reason why you log onto Tumblr is for Porn, then you don’t understand what made Tumblr special in the first place
Tumblr is not a Porn Site
It was never intended to be, so for the people that are saying stuff like “Tumblr never supported our sex work anyway” you’re 100% correct. Being allowed to post Pornography isn’t the same as being a source for it. Over the years Tumblr has been ran rampant with porn to the point that content creators that did other stuff that didn’t relate to porn slowly started to go to other platforms; Since their work was being overshadowed by the sheer volume of porn and they struggled to get any attention on their work.
You people are acting like Tumblr is attacking sex workers as if this was their main and only place to earn money for their work.
There are porn sites that are made to promote AND support sex workers. Hell PornHub will pay people for their sextapes and has multiple systems in place for them to make money off Ad revenue alongside having a tip system, content protection and other stuff
Tumblr media
Anyone that was serious about their sex work would have been using sites like this instead of relying on Tumblr as a main source of revenue or promotion.
Tumblr is a trash place to try to promote anything! Constant spamming of bots and tags, No reliable Notification system or way for your followers to see you’re new posts out of the sea of reblogs. So to act like these new changes are going to serious kill anyone that is in the sex work is flat out outrageous.
Hell a majority of the popular porn that was on here wasn’t even from amateurs making videos on here. People were taking porn from porn sites and making blogs centered around it and would constantly flood their blogs with this content which would then, overshadow any amateur worker on here that made their own work; since they had no to even compete with the constant bombardment of daily new stuff that these blogs were taking and using.
People would steal other peoples videos and get popular of it without even crediting the original creator and would even go as far as to SELL these videos and make more money of it than the actual people in the damn video.
So Tumblr was never an ideal place for sex work to begin with, so throw that excuse out. Most people only used Tumblr to promote their private snapchat or onlyfans account which you can still do in a regular selfie or post. There are thousands of people on Instagram making hundreds and thousands of dollars doing the same thing and they don’t have one titty out on their page. Just tight clothing and skimpy outfits.
If you’re really upset that you can’t watch porn on here after Dec 17
Tumblr media
At first it was funny seeing people joke about the porn being gone. But some of y’all are really upset and mad that you need to actually go to a porn sites to watch porn???
Some of y’all don’t even post nudes or create anything that could be considered sexual and y’all saying “ima delete my blog since tumblr is trying to silence me”
Tumblr media
(Side Note: Just because your post got flagged doesn’t mean it will be deleted. They already said stuff like this would happen as they added in this new system. So mistakes like these are bound to happen and will most likely be fixed in a week or so and have no negative affect on your blog. Y’all really acting like Tumblr is out to silence your love for cats and landscapes 🙄)
Like i said before there are plenty of sites to watch porn on and if your favorite sex worker is serious about their job then you will see them on there. Which only makes things easier for both of you. But lets be honest, most of y’all just like the idea of seeing porn without having to actually look for it, like it’s some nasty secret. On Tumblr you couldn’t escape porn even if you searched things that were unrelated to it. Tumblr gave you guys the perfect cover up for it and you guys went overboard with it and here we are. People are so quick to compare this issue to other Tumblr problems but there was never a issue as big as people with dick profile pics dming you no matter who you were (kids or adults)  and sending you nude pics; then Porn Bots popped up under everyone’s post no matter if you had the safety lock on or not.
You guys made hundreds of post saying how much you hate porn blogs getting tens of thousands of notes in agreement about it, You guys would put “no porn blogs allowed” in your description box or something similar in meaning.
And now when Tumblr puts a system in place to directly remove it, you guys try to back pedal and claim that it will kill sex workers, freedom of speech and sexuality based off opinions, assumptions and things that aren’t even in the policy change.
Some of y’all honestly suggested “Just add a age verification system” as a way to fix the porn issue.... That shit ain’t never worked since 2002! I got so use to lying on those things that i sometimes forget that i’m grown and that i don’t need to put “01/11/1975″
The only people that this severely hurts are
1a) People that steal porn from other sites to use on their blog to get followers, to then try sell promo slots
1b) People that are stealing other sex workers content and illegally selling them
2) Child Porn Blogs
THAT’S IT
And Honestly is that really a bad thing? Getting rid of people that were stealing other peoples stuff and making money off it and pedophiles.
The way tumblr was set up allowed blogs like these to thrive without any risk, outside of getting their blog deleted (just to make a new one) and it only continued the flood of porn which became the breeding grounds for Porn Bots
Tumblr is suppose to be a place to freely express all forms of art, ideas, and conversations. But because of the nonstop flood of porn, most people only know it for Porn and Emo kids. Which brings me back to my original statement
This isn’t a Porn Site
Porn became so over flooded on here that you didn’t even need to search to find it. All you had todo is take off the safe lock and search anything, even a city. There would be hundreds of porn pics and videos in every slot. And before you say “well just keep the safety lock on”
Any content that had cursing, fighting or even slight nudity got put behind there. So unless you were just on here for kpop, aesthetics and Steven Universe you weren’t really seeing anything different with that lock on.
( Another Side Note: For you people trying to compare the porn flood to white supremacy blogs need to stop it. All the time i’ve been on here i have never NEEEVVVEEER accidentally came across any pro white supremacy post or blog unless it was someone exposing them and their stupidity which would then cause them to delete their blog. If you are constantly seeing anything Pro Nazi, Pro White Supremacy, Pro homophobia or anything similar that supports bigotry; then you are actively searching for it and follow these people. These blogs don’t even make up 5% of the content seen on here with or without the lock. So trying to say that Tumblr supports these blogs since they’re still around is Mr. Fantastic level of reaching. These blogs have never been a serious issue to the point that Nazi Bots were created saying “Hate jews and blacks clck here for more ;)”. So stop this weak comparison.)
I created a Tumblr and made it one of my main platforms to create content on because of the communities and people i found on here.
I found Great stories and Dope artist on here. I found people being able to fully express themselves and find an audience for them that helped share their work through a simple reblog. But if you’ve been noticing or have been on here long enough, most content creators don’t use Tumblr as their main platform to create or promote their content anymore. And why would they?
People barely activate their notifications for blog updates, It’s hella hard to find an audience through the constant reblogging of already popular stuff From Vine and Twitter, people rarely go outside of tumblr to support peoples stores or websites. Hell most artist on here that become popular on here that get continued support are the ones that have made or continue to make some kind of pornography of real or fictional characters. It’s hella rare to find any artist that hasn’t made any porn, that is equally popular or supported like the ones that have; which just goes back to people thinking Tumblr is for porn.
Tumblr isn’t even against the idea of expressing yourself or art through nudity as their post and policy change explicitly explained. And people’s content that’s getting flagged that doesn’t go against that policy is a problem THAT THEY SAID WOULD HAPPEN as they get everything in order with their new system
All of these long post that people are writing about it that and they themselves forgot to do some basic reading on the topic.
Tumblr Staff- “Certain types of artistic, educational, newsworthy, or political content featuring nudity are fine. Don’t upload any content, including images, videos, GIFs, or illustrations, that depicts sex acts.
This isn’t an attack on people’s ability to speak out or embrace themselves. They are directly trying to remove Porn which they won’t be able to fully do, even Instagram and Twitter can’t do that; no public site with millions of people can. But they’re at least trying to get rid of the constant overflow of it.
It’s so sad to see hundreds and thousands of you saying “i only used Tumblr for porn” because that just shows how derailed this site has become and why Tumblr had to make these extreme decisions especially after being removed from app stores because of the child pornography.
If you’re going to leave because you can’t make porn on here: I can see why you would do that but there is no reason to. You can still use your blog to promote your stuff and make teases of your work that can be found or bought else where. Tumblr was never a reliable place for sex work and i highly recommend using Sites that will actually protect your work and put some money in your pockets while doing it
If you’re leaving because you can’t watch porn on here: You probably weren’t supporting anyone really and only made the influx of porn worse, making it harder for other content users to be seen. If you were supporting actual sex workers on here then continue to do so, I’m sure anyone serious would have more than just tumblr as their main platform.
For those that got popular and made money off other people sex work: So long and farewell
For the Child Porn Blogs: Hope you get mental help or burn. Either or is fine with me
For the people that may get upset by this: Correct me, Prove me wrong, Let’s have a whole serious discussion about this and hear each others side with no fighting or disrespect :D
For all of Us: Lets actually support and help the people that really make Tumblr the gem that it is. Lets make this platform be known for creative people and unique ideas; and communities that actually comfort and understand us. Let’s actually make this platform something that’s known for more than just Porn and Emo Kids.
Regardless i hope that everyone can calm down and act like there’s more here than just porn..

Online Personal Security
Tumblr media
Source: https://www.bioedge.org/bioethics/no-privacy-in-a-transhumanist-future-says-former-presidential-candidate/12759
Online security is one of, if not the biggest concern for a lot of internet users. Personal info is left scattered online, payment details, browsing history, chat logs, and much more. While there are things you can do to increase your security online, you never are truly 100% safe. Here are some general tips you can use to further increase your online security as well as how they get bypassed.
·         Secure your personal network – Having an unsecure network at home is the equivalent of having your front door completely unlocked at night! A secure network provides protection to the traffic going through your router. Applying any protection is better than having no security at all. One of the most common encryptions used a few years back was WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
Tumblr media
Source: https://www.wirelesshack.org/step-by-step-kali-linux-and-wireless-hacking-basics-wep-hacking-part-3.html
How it’s broken - Since then WEP has been proven to be vulnerable to attack, it isn’t recommended to use. It can be used in 64-bit strength and 128-bit strength. 256-bit has been introduced as well, but you hardly ever see it implemented, if ever. In 64-bit WEP it has a secret key of 40 bits and an initialization vector of 24 bits. In 128-bit WEP this increases to 104-bit secret key and the initialization vector is still the same at 24-bits. There are two methods to breaking WEP. We’re only going to cover one, the FMS attack. The attack is named after Fluhrer, Mantin, and Shamir. It’s based on a flaw of the RC4 encryption algorithm. The three discovered that since throughout the different sizes of WEP and the fact that they all used the same initialization vector this limits the possibility of initialization vectors to 16 million. Of all those combinations, 9000 of them were found to be weak. If one were to collect enough of these IV’s, you can recreate the key needed to connect to the network. You’re probably wondering how people collect these IV’s in the first place. This is where monitor mode comes in. This is a special mode that is available on all wireless cards, you just need software to tell your wireless card to go into this mode. Once it’s in monitor mode, you can use your wireless card to collect wireless packets that are transmitting between your computer and your router. After collecting 5 million packets or so (this takes about 10 minutes tops) you’ll have collected 3000 IV’s, roughly. These packets are then passed through a program that will calculate the first byte of the WEP key. The procedure is then repeated until the full key is discovered.
Is there another option? – Yes! WPA was passed as the standard later after WEP was proven to be broken. This as well was proven to be vulnerable to other forms of attack. This is when WPA2 was introduced. WPA2 is secure for the most part. It’s vulnerable to dictionary-based attack. This involves having a massive list of possible passwords and hammering the router with these passwords until you get lucky. Later on the in the lifespan of WPA2 there was a discovery in the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) feature in most routers. To be clear, this isn’t a fault in WPA2, this is a weakness in WPS.
How it’s broken, again – A WPS Pin is 8 digits long, the last digit is used as a checksum for the previous 7 digits. This means 107 = 10,000,000 million possible combinations. Surely, this is a ridiculous number of pins to test and go through, correct? When a pin is tested, it’s split in 2 parts, the first 4 digits are checked and if it passes, the following 4 digits (3 technically since the last digit is used as a checksum) are checked as well. 104 = 10,000 possible tests for the first half of the WPS pin. This is much more reasonable to brute-force and check. Once the first half is found, the following 3 digits are brute-forced which is again, 103 = 1000. Only a thousand combinations for the 2nd half of the pin. 11,000 total combinations to test and eventually connect to the network. 11,000 down from 10,000,000 million is much more possible. Let’s talk about mitigation. The WPS Pin attack has been around for a few years now and has been patched by most router manufacturers. After 3 attempts the router locks out the WPS feature and needs to be restarted to get more attempts at guessing. While this, doesn’t fix the problem, it makes the process of getting into a network take a much longer amount of time. The latest vulnerability in routers though, is a fault in WPA2 itself. It’s called KRACK. While this is the most interesting of the attacks, I will not be explaining the details as that would result in a paper on this subject alone. KRACK is short for Key Reinstallation AttaCK. To summarize, WPA2 uses a 4-way handshake to encrypt packets. By capturing and resending the 3rd message sent you can capture any network encrypted data and decrypt it. While this doesn’t give you the network passcode to connect to the router, it makes the content of whatever you’re doing very readable. Therefore, it is recommended to use “The S”. This is the S in HTTPS. The S stands for secure. It means whatever you’re doing on that webpage is encrypted from your pc to the other site you’re on. Making it much harder to do anything with anything captured through KRACK.
 ·         Strong passwords/2 Step Verification – We all have those 2 emails we use for everything. A primary and a secondary. Without these, we’d be lost. Strong passwords are a common thing people struggle with. The most common password in 2017 was “123456” (http://fortune.com/2017/12/19/the-25-most-used-hackable-passwords-2017-star-wars-freedom/). People struggle with making secure passwords as well as using words in their passwords. A good place to check how long it would take a computer to guess your password is https://howsecureismypassword.net/ but this doesn’t stop dictionary attacks. Dictionary attacks are based off long word lists with numbers as well depending on how big the list is. Nowadays there are password managers that can generate and store passwords for you on the fly. This often assures that each password is unique and isn’t easily guessable. This can be a double-edged sword. You’re putting all your trust and personal details in someone else’s hands. LastPass is a password manager that is used by millions. They were hacked once in 2015 (https://lifehacker.com/lastpass-hacked-time-to-change-your-master-password-1711463571) and again in 2017 (https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/last-pass-hacked-again/) during both hacks, users were told to change their master passwords that decrypted their databases that stored every password they used. Another common additional step that users like to add as another measure of precaution is 2 Step Authentication. This is the process of using your phone to generate a token that is usually 6 numbers to prove you’re the owner of whatever account you’re trying to access. Another tip with passwords, change them often! Most of the time people never change passwords.
·         Use the S – The S in HTTPS is a new standard that encrypts traffic of websites you browse and secures the payment info when you buy something online. Less than 60% of the internets most popular websites have secure implementation. Generally when you see a lock next to your URL. You’re using https and you’re safe. Back in 2014 there was a bug that affected OpenSSL. OpenSSL is a library that was used by many services to implement https on many sites. This bug was called Heartbleed. Some popular sites that were affected by said bug include, Instagram, Google, Yahoo, AWS(Amazon Web Services) (https://mashable.com/2014/04/09/heartbleed-bug-websites-affected/#K3TT49sSLaqm ). Those are just a few, most of the affected sites have issued patches to address the issue. Generally though, https is the ideal you want to use.
·         Conclusion – Regardless of what tips there are to improve your online security, there are ways around many security measures. Bugs get discovered and patched. Online security is a extremely fast paced environment. Nothing you do online is 100% safe, but there are precautions you can take to improve the protection you have online.

Anyone is building a marketplace for advice, one 5-minute call at a time
Anyone, an audio app that’s building a ‘marketplace for advice’ one five-minute phone call at a time, is launching new versions of its iOS and Android apps today* and beginning to large-scale onboarding after operating in a limited closed beta for the past six months.
The app — which was founded around 18 months ago (so pre-pandemic) — has a simple premise: Advice is best delivered verbally, concisely and one-to-one, in a time-limited format.
Video is distracting and a hassle to fit into busy people’s schedules. Text is time-consuming and prone to misunderstandings. But a simple phone call can — quickly and usefully — cut through, is the thinking here.
Hence the decision to hard-stop at a five-minute phone call. The app automatically terminates each call at the five minute mark — no ifs, no buts (and, well, hopefully fewer time-nibbling ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ too).
To fund development of the marketplace, the team has raised around $4 million in total to date — mainly comprised of a $3.6M seed round led by Berlin-based Cavalry Ventures with participation from Supernode Global, Antler and a number of high-profile angel investors (contributing angels include Atomico’s Sarah Drinkwater and Sameer Singh; and ustwo’s Matt ‘Mills’ Miller, among others).
Broadly speaking, online audio has shown its staying power through a sustained podcast boom and, more recently, a buzzy moment for social audio, via developments like Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces — which speak to a general sense of pandemic-struck ‘Zoom fatigue’ as remote workers max out on video calls at work yet still crave meaningful connections with other people at a time when opportunities to mingle in person are still limited vs pre-COVID-19.
A lot of social audio can still be very noisy, though, and Anyone wants to be anything but. This is short-form, topic-specific audio.
Clubhouse closes an undisclosed $4B valuation Series C round, as tech giants’ clones circle
Why five minutes? It’s short enough for a busy person to almost not have to think twice about taking a cold call from someone they’ve probably never spoken to before — while being just about long enough that some useful advice can be distilled and imparted across those 300 seconds of one-to-one connection.
Naturally the short format does not allow for group/conference calls. It’s one-to-one only.
Anyone’s CEO also reckons this “intimate”, short-form audio format could help drive diversity of advice by encouraging people whose voices may be underrepresented in traditional mentorship fora to feel more comfortable offering their time and knowledge to others. (He touts a current 50:50 user-split between men and women offering expertise through the app — and 25% people of color.)
“It’s not about taking long form meetings and compressing them — it’s about taking those conversations that would never have happened… and making them happen,” says CEO and co-founder David Orlic, pointing out that mainstream calendar apps have a default meeting slot that’s set to half an hour or an hour. So the wider thesis is that our current tools/infrastructure just aren’t set up to help people give and grab bitesized advice. (And, well, on the Internet anyone can claim to be an expert — but of course you can’t rely on the quality of the ‘advice’ you find freely floating around online.)
“Our belief is that there are a lot of five minute problems that we could be solving — whereas there are a lot of 30 or 60 minute problems that have solutions designed for them already. So we’re kind of building this for those conversations that aren’t happening,” he adds.
Orlic hints that the intention is also to leave Anyone’s callers a little hungry for more — to feed demand for more five-minute conversations and so fuel transactions across the marketplace.
“If you look at the demand side — the callers — there’s always multiple calls involved. So people will call a lot of people and ask them basically the same question or bounce ideas. And then they will aggregate those insights into something that’s much more valuable than one conversation,” he continues. “So it’s like building an advisory board for yourself.”
The idea for the platform came after Orlic and his co-founders realized they could trace key career decisions to a handful of short conversations — brief moments of advice that ended up profoundly influencing the trajectory of their working lives, to the point where they were still looking back on them years later.
“None of us in the founding team had any networks to speak of when we were growing up. And we had fairly little exposure to opportunity. Alfred is from a small village in the middle of nowhere in Sweden, I grew up in an immigrant family, and Sam is a working class bloke from Leeds. And looking back at our careers we could track them back to this handful of conversations — these haphazard moments when someone gave us a piece of critical advice,” he tells TechCrunch. “For them it was just another five minute chat but for us it turned out to be life-changing.”
“For Alfred it was some quick advice on how he could land a job at Google which he managed to do and spent almost a decade there working as a growth guy on Google Chrome and other stuff; for Sam it was how to start a company; for me it was the suggestion that I as a creative should pursue an MBA — which I ended up doing. So we started thinking long and hard about the concept of advice, and we became obsessed with opening up these closed networks.”
The aim for Anyone’s marketplace is to make similarly pivotal moments accessible to all sorts of people — by giving the app’s users the chance to call any expertise provider on the network (provided they can afford the fee) and ask their question.
A slogan on its website poses the question “imagine if you could call anyone in the world” — which is certainly a poetic-sounding moonshot to be shooting for, although the size of the user-base remains far off that global vision at this early stage.
“What we’re building is really the phone book of the future,” says Orlic, slotting his elevator pitch into our ~30-minute phone conversation. “We’re building a place for unique, one-to-one, five minute experiences — which is something really different from most social audio plays.”
He points to a trend of other apps intentionally applying limits to change/define the user experience in behavior-shaping ways (like Poparazzi, a self-styled ‘anti-Instagram’ photo sharing app that doesn’t let you take selfies to make you take more pics of your friends and vice versa; or the dating app Thursday which limits users to one active day of use per week to prevent endless swiping and nudge matches toward going on an actual in-person date).
The marketplace component of Anyone’s app is another intentional limit too, of course. Calls are not free by default.
Putting a price on Anyone’s one-to-one advice is one way to try to weed out unserious (or indeed abusive) users from those genuinely seeking others’ expertise on specific topics.
But primarily it’s there to provide an incentivize for people who have expertise worth sharing to make themselves available to take cold-calls (even very short ones) from strangers/those outside their existing contact networks.
Pricing for a five-minute call is set by Anyone users. So the call fee can vary from nothing at all (if the user distributes a free voucher code) to as little as $5 or all the way up to $500 (!) which does sound pretty crazy expensive. But Orlic notes users can choose to donate their fee to a charity if they do not wish to financially benefit from the advice they’re dishing out (so there may be instances where a high fee includes a philanthropic component).
With such highly variable fees, the app will need to have a good safety mechanism to re-confirm a user really does want to be charged the specific fee. (And, god forbid, to avoid the risk of butt-dialling…
Tumblr media
)
“If you want to connect with someone I think it’s reasonable to put a cost on the scarcest resource on the planet which is someone’s undivided attention,” Orlic argues, suggesting that plenty of mainstream tech confuses transient ‘access’ with attention. “We can ‘access’ people everywhere — we can listen to them, read them, follow them. But that’s not the same as attention… Someone’s undivided attention is a remarkable, remarkable thing. And the five-minute cap forces you to be very clear and to the point about what you want to chat about.”
With its intentionally attention-slicing infrastructure — which manages ephemeral contacts into precisely measured and billed units — “all of a sudden you have all of these conversations that wouldn’t have happened happening thanks to this manageable way of connecting with people, is the claim.
Anyone users wanting to list themselves on the marketplace to sell one-to-one advice will need to create a profile that specifies their availability to take calls and some basic details (name, career details, location etc), as well as setting their five minute fee.
They also need to provide details of the “conversation topics” they’re comfortable giving advice on.
Co-founder Alfred Malmros’ profile includes examples such as: “Make the leap. Quitting a dream job to make it on your own”; “Rising quickly in a large organisation — politics vs. talent”; and “It takes a fool to remain sane. Thriving as an employee” — so topic steerage looks intended to be not only specific but maybe also give a flavor of the individual’s personality to further help advice-seekers decide if they want to shell out for five minutes of that particular person’s time.
The risk of imposters or low quality advice is being managed by “vetting and verification” processing all advisors have to go through prior to being able to sell, per Orlic. “Beyond verification, we put a lot of work into making sure that everyone on Anyone understands what constitutes good advice, how to avoid projection and biases in conversations, etc,” he adds.
The platform also incorporates a rating system — again, in an attempt to keep quality up across the marketplace.
Anyone’s early users are a blend of creators, founders and investors, per Orlic — including a lot of first and second time founders, as you might expect, with the pandemic having limited in-person startup networking opportunities.
He also says they’ve attracted a lot of people mid career, looking for advice on how to quit their jobs and pivot into something totally new — again, likely fuelled by the pandemic reconfiguring many things around how we work (and, more broadly, how we may be thinking about work-life balance).
“When you’re doing that kind of big life decision you really want to connect with a lot of people and ask around,” he suggests on the interest from established professionals looking for advice on a career switch. “Also there’s a high willingness to pay, I’d argue, when you’re in that position.”
“Business is a huge thing as a marketplace for advice,” Orlic adds, noting that a record number of businesses started in the last year too. “Investors — by the way — love this for deal flow because they can speed date a lot of founders and then pick who they continue with.”
Parents are another community of early users he highlights — saying they’ve been both offering and soliciting advice during the early test phase. He says one of the best pieces of advice he’s personally gained through the network was a conversation about parenting, adding: “I’ve had some really profound conversations with other dads. People that know a lot more about parenting than I do — where I’ve gotten really actionable advice and support. So that has been a big thing for me personally.”
Orlic also says he’s excited about potential in the area of mental health — suggesting the short-form format could be helpful to get people to have conversations about therapy which, since they’re so bitesized and bounded, may be a non-intimidating introduction toward taking up more sustained support.
He also mentions that he’s excited about the potential for civic society to make use of the platform as a tool for driving public engagement and awareness around issues and campaigns.
Appropriately enough, Anyone’s team has been dogfooding by using the app to get advice to help build the startup. (Orlic admits he asked someone on the network how to get TechCrunch’s attention and was advised, by the unnamed investor, to pitch this reporter — so it sounds like he got some solid advice there ;)
The app has had around 1,000 test users during the closed beta period — with some 12,000 on the wait-list that Orlic says they’ll be onboarding over the coming weeks.
Network building — so growing the size of the user-base on both the expertise and demand sides — is clearly going to be a key challenge here. (And notably Orlic emphases the network effects expertise of its angel backer, Singh.)
Anyone’s five-minute format may be bitesize enough to encourage users to spread the word of any good experiences they have on the platform to their (wider) social graphs on mainstream social networks. Although the calls themselves must surely remain private between the two interlocutors — so there are some hard limits on the app content being able to go viral.
(At the time of writing, a link to Anyone’s privacy policy wasn’t working so we asked for a confirm on the privacy of calls — and Orlic told us: “All calls on the new app are completely e2e encrypted, and there’s no way to listen in on an ongoing conversation. For user safety, calls are recorded, anonymised and stored in a secure environment for maximum 30 days. So in case a user reports a specific call in the app and wants a refund, or if an advisor flags up harassment or other serious issues, we can deal with that in a sustainable way.”)
At the same time it’s not hard to imagine a platform like Twitter (or, indeed, LinkedIn) seeing value in offering a similar one-to-one user call capability — and bolting it on as a feature on an established network where users have already built up extensive social graphs. So If Anyone’s idea really takes off the risk of cloning could get very real — which means it will have to balance network building/growth with attention to the quality of the community it’s building and innovating to keep its users happily stuck to its own (inevitably smaller) network.
Commenting on backing the app in a statement, Claude Ritter, managing partner at Cavalry Ventures, said: “What sets Anyone apart from other audio apps is the quality and connection of 1:1 advice. The team saw the potential of audio and the emergence of the creator economy long before the hype. We’re impressed by what they’ve accomplished to date and by their mission to build the phone book of the future.”
Around 9,000 five-minute calls have been made via Anyone’s platform so far, per Orlic — who says the goal they’re shooting for as they open up access now is to get to 100,000 calls within a year.
The business model for now is to take a straightforward 20% cut of the advice fee.
On the fee side there’s also potential for things to get bumpy if momentum builds around the concept — given that platform giants have been known to take a predatory approach to pricing when trying to close down creator-supporting upstart competition via their own fast-following clones. (See, for example, Facebook’s recent dive into offering a newsletter platform — for which it’s both paying writers upfront for contributions and, at least initially, not taking any cut of their subscriptions.)
It’s clear that Anyone will need to pay particular attention to the quality of the advice and community it’s building. It may even end up needing to hone in on serving particular niches and specialisms in order to leverage differentiation vs larger more generalist networks which have the advantage of larger user-bases should they decide to move in on the same ‘quick call’ turf.
At the same time, there are signs that some of the buzz around social audio may be fading away to more of a hmm as the hype dies down and app users tire of all the noise. But again, that’s why Anyone keeping the audio side intentionally short looks smart.
“We feel that we are part of a movement that is rebuilding the Internet as we know it and building something that is more sustainable and healthy — and really creating value,” says Orlic, discussing the changing landscape around social apps. “Closed social is a topic that I’m really excited by. We’ve seen this for years, with Slack channels and WhatsApp groups. We’ve seen social closing off because of a tonne of different reasons — and with Geneva and a lot of new really cool startups and platforms we’re seeing everything focus around communities. People building communities around specific verticals and then monetizing them in different ways. So we’re definitely a part of that wave.
“A lot of our most active users are people who have built audiences around specific topic and want more meaningful connections with those audiences — the Substack writers that use us as a way to both connect with their existing readers but also gaining new superfans, if you will, because when you’ve had a five minute chat with someone and then sign up to read their Substack, you will read everything they write after that kind of intro. So we’re definitely a part of that closed social. But as a business we are a marketplace — because again we’re obsessed with that idea of someone’s undivided attention being a very scarce resource and the fact that we’re seeing the ‘cameo-ification’ of everything and everyone. And that is also here to stay.”
“Monetization — in one way — sounds like a really crass and cynical concept but at the end of the day we want people to build income streams around things they’re passionate and know a lot about. At the end of the day that is a wonderful, wonderful thing,” he adds. “A creator middle class is a very exciting concept because looking at all the big platforms, old social media, we know where the money is going — it’s going to the top 0.1% of influencers and creators. Whereas small and mid tier creators are not making money to sustain themselves off their passion. For that you have all of these cohort-based courses through Maven. And platforms like us — that enable people to connect directly with each other in a one-to-one setting.
“We think it’s very cool that we’re doing an opinionated, one-to-one, five-minutes, audio-only platform because that gives us a unique positioning. And this is what excites the team. Seeing these stories come out of it — and those stories would not come out of it if it was just another broadcasting or Clubhouse thing.”
There is of course no small irony that it’s exactly because of the proliferation of mobile connectivity and apps — which have driven increased utility by providing people with on-demand access to so much data (and people) — that the traditional ‘quick call’ of old has been derailed, creating conditions where a startup feels there’s an opportunity to build a dedicated marketplace for scheduled quick phone calls. (Albeit, one that’s aiming to scale to a far wider network that the average person would have had in their phone book back in the 1980s, say.)
But as software and connectivity keeps eating the world, enforcing tech upgrades and reconfiguring learned behaviors, it’s clear that the resulting disruption can recreate the right conditions for new tools to come in and repackage some of the old convenience — which maybe got a bit lost in the noise.

Fact check: Breaking down 10 claims about the Democrats' elections bill Here is a fact check of some of the claims lawmakers made at the hearing; the Republicans present made a larger number of checkable assertions about what is in the bill, so we checked more claims from them than from the Democrats present. Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas claimed: “Under this bill, there’s automatic registration of anybody — if you get a driver’s license, if you get a welfare payment, if you get an unemployment payment, if you attend a public university. Now everyone knows there are millions of illegal aliens who have driver’s licenses, who are getting welfare benefits, who attend public universities. … ” Facts First: It is not true that the bill automatically registers “anybody” to vote. The bill does not change current law banning people who aren’t US citizens, including undocumented immigrants, from registering to vote in federal elections. While the bill does require every state to adopt an “automatic voter registration” system, it repeatedly makes clear that only citizens are eligible to be registered. The bill says people would have to affirm that they are US citizens before they were added to the voter rolls. It also says the government agencies involved in the registration process would inform only US citizens that they would be registered to vote unless they chose to opt out. And it says the agencies would be required to send elections officials not only people’s names but also “information showing that the individual is a citizen of the United States.” The word “automatic” in “automatic voter registration” does not mean that there can be no verification measures. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson testified later in the hearing that her state’s automatic voter registration system includes “six checks” to ensure that only eligible citizens get registered. It is true that there have sometimes been errors under state automatic voter registration systems that resulted in noncitizens getting registered to vote. But there have also been errors in states without automatic voter registration. Daniel Weiner, deputy director of the Election Reform Program at New York University’s liberal Brennan Center for Justice, said in an interview that automatic voter registration “increases the accuracy” of the voter rolls, “not the other way around.” Registration for 16-year-olds West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner, a Republican, expressed concerns about the automatic voter registration provisions. Warner warned that the bill “overrules checks and balances in our election security. It mandates AVR, including 16-year-olds.” Facts First: This needs context. While it’s true that the bill would require states to allow individuals as young as 16 to register to vote, the text explicitly says that nothing in the bill requires states to let individuals vote before they turn 18 — and that the bill has “no effect” on states’ own voting age requirements. The policy of registering people before they turn 18 but not yet allowing them to vote, known as preregistration, already exists in several states in varying forms. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 23 states allowed individuals under 18 years old to preregister to vote as of February 2019. Fourteen states and the District of Columbia allowed preregistration at 16 years old, while four states, including West Virginia, allowed 17-year-olds to preregister. (The other five states have different age requirements.) Specifically, the West Virginia secretary of state’s website says that people who are 17 years old and will turn 18 before the next general election can register. (It also says “17 year olds may register and vote in primary elections if they turn 18 before the next general election.”) Criminals and the vote “This bill is designed to get criminals to vote,” Cruz said. “This bill says, ‘If you’re a murderer, if you’re a rapist, if you’re a child molester, we the Democrats want you voting.’ ” Facts First: This needs context. The bill would not force states to allow incarcerated felons to vote. It would require states to allow people who committed felonies to vote once they are no longer incarcerated. “Individuals who have completed a felony sentence would have their right to vote in federal elections reinstated once they are released from custody or receive a probation sentence,” Matthew Weil, director of the Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center think tank, said in an email. “States would be required to notify these individuals of their re-enfranchisement.” In a bipartisan vote on March 2, the House voted 328-97 to defeat an amendment from progressive Democrats to extend federal voting rights to people who are still incarcerated. The prevalence of voter fraud Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi claimed that voter fraud is “rampant.” Facts First: This is just not true. Voter fraud is exceedingly rare in the United States. There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 general election. Voter identification laws Warner, the West Virginia secretary of state, said the bill “bans ID laws.” Facts First: This is false. The bill does not prohibit states from having voter identification laws. Rather, it requires states to give voters an alternative to showing the ID the states normally require — specifically, to allow voters who do not show ID to instead submit signed statements under penalty of perjury attesting to their identity and eligibility to vote. Critics are entitled to argue that this provision weakens or undermines voter ID laws, but it’s just not true to say the bill “bans” such laws. For absentee ballot applications in particular, the law says states can’t require any form of identification except for a signature or “similar affirmation.” It says, though, that this policy has “no effect” on ID requirements for first-time voters registering by mail. And as the National Conference of State Legislatures notes on its website, state voter ID requirements generally don’t apply to mail-in or absentee ballots anyway. “Many states allow registered voters to request an absentee ballot completely online if they are already registered to vote,” Weil said. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, made a more nuanced claim than Warner did, saying that “popular policies like voter ID requirements would be banned unless states neutered them with loopholes.” This claim at least hinted that the bill does not include a total prohibition on voter ID laws. The bill and a North Carolina scandal Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi said: “As I recall, a member from North Carolina, a Republican, was elected in a close election and was expelled or not seated from the House of Representatives because he engaged in ballot harvesting, which was illegal under the law of North Carolina but would be not only legal but required to be legal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.” Facts First: This is misleading. While the Democrats’ bill would require states to allow voters to designate other people of their choice to submit their sealed absentee ballots for them, it would not legalize the fraudulent activity that allegedly occurred in this 2018 congressional race in North Carolina. Associates of a Republican operative in that race have said that they forged witness signatures on absentee ballots, cast votes in races that voters had left blank on unsealed ballots and were paid based on the number of ballots collected. All of that would be illegal under the Democrats’ bill. In addition, the House of Representatives did not expel any Republican because of the election scandal, and it wasn’t the House itself that decided not to seat the Republican in question. Here’s what actually happened. In the US House election for North Carolina’s 9th District, Republican Mark Harris received 905 more votes than Democrat Dan McCready. Because of the allegations against Leslie McCrae Dowless, an operative for Harris who ended up getting indicted — he said he had done nothing wrong, and his trial has not occurred yet — the North Carolina State Board of Elections voted not to certify the results. The board called for a new election, which was won in 2019 by Republican Dan Bishop. (Harris declined to run in the new election.) It’s also worth noting that, according to a National Conference of State Legislatures web post in February, 26 states already permit voters to let someone else submit a ballot for them. Twelve of those states have limits on the number of ballots any one person can collect and return; the Democrats’ bill would not allow such limits. State proposals McConnell, arguing that this federal bill is unnecessary, claimed that “states are not engaging in trying to suppress voters, whatsoever.” Facts First: Since the 2020 election, Republican state legislators around the country have put forward proposals that would make it more difficult to vote. These include stricter identification requirements and reduced access to mail-in ballots, ballot drop boxes, early voting and voter registration. Here is a CNN look at what is happening. According to the Brennan Center, the legislatures with the largest number of restrictive bills as of February 19 were in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona, which all flipped from electing Donald Trump in 2016 to Joe Biden in 2020. Sunday voting in Georgia Criticizing Republican election proposals in various states, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said that “the most reprehensible effort of all might be found in Georgia, where Republicans recently passed a bill to eliminate early voting on Sunday. On Sunday, a day when many churchgoing African Americans participate in voter drives known as ‘souls to the polls.’ ” Facts First: This needs context. The current version of the Georgia Republican bill — which has not been passed into law — does not include a ban on early voting on Sundays. On March 1, however, the Georgia House did pass a Republican bill that would have reduced early Sunday voting. And before that, Georgia Republicans had initially proposed to fully eliminate early voting on Sundays. State Republicans have now backed away from these initial proposals for weekend reductions, though they are continuing to push voting restrictions of other kinds. They now appear poised to make both Saturdays of the three-week period mandatory for counties — at present, only one Saturday is mandatory — and to give counties the option of allowing early voting on both Sundays. Voting rights activists say there is an important caveat: The bill does not appear to require any weekend early voting in runoff elections. (Democrats won two Georgia runoffs in January to earn control of the US Senate.) We’ll update this item if we get further information on the bill’s runoff provisions. — CNN’s Dianne Gallagher and Kelly Mena contributed to this item. The ACLU’s position on the US bill McConnell said, “This bill is such an attack on citizens’ privacy that even the left-wing ACLU opposes this bill.” Facts First: McConnell has a solid basis for this claim: The American Civil Liberties Union publicly opposed the bill in 2019, warning, among other things, that it would unconstitutionally infringe on “the right to associational privacy.” However, it’s worth noting for context that the ACLU has since softened its stance — saying that while it continues in 2021 to have serious concerns about certain provisions of the bill, it has not “taken a public position opposing the bill” as a whole this year, spokeswoman Gabriela Meléndez Olivera said in an email. ACLU lawyers wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post this month that they “strongly support many of the critical reforms” contained in the bill but called on legislators to fix certain other provisions. The ACLU has expressed privacy concerns about a provision that would require the disclosure of the names and addresses of people who donate $10,000 or more to entities that make “campaign-related disbursements.” The ACLU lawyers warned in the op-ed that such disbursements “could include paid political speech that discusses a public issue such as immigrants’ rights, voting rights or reproductive freedom if the communication merely mentions a candidate for public office,” and they said that groups working to advance civil rights through paid communications should not be “deterred from doing so” because of a government-imposed funding disclosure requirement. The National Disability Rights Network’s position on the bill Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the committee chair, entered into the record three letters that she said were in support of the bill. One of them was from the National Disability Rights Network. Facts First: Klobuchar had a reasonable basis for her claim that the National Disability Rights Network supports the bill; the network sent her and the committee’s top Republican member a letter that called the bill “sorely needed” and said “almost all” of its provisions “will positively impact all voters in America, including voters with disabilities.” However, as with McConnell’s claim about the ACLU, there is nuance here. The letter also expressed “great concern” about the bill’s requirement for states to use paper ballots, saying that any such mandate would mean “this important reform legislation could disenfranchise many voters with disabilities.” (You can read more here.) Michelle Bishop, the National Disability Rights Network’s voter access and engagement manager, said in an email to CNN that the organization does not have an overall position in support of or opposition to the bill. Fact check: Breaking down 10 claims about the Democrats' elections bill
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/fact-check-breaking-down-10-claims-about-the-democrats-elections-bill/
Fact check: Breaking down 10 claims about the Democrats' elections bill
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a fact check of some of the claims lawmakers made at the hearing; the Republicans present made a larger number of checkable assertions about what is in the bill, so we checked more claims from them than from the Democrats present.
Facts First: It is not true that the bill automatically registers “anybody” to vote.
And it says the agencies would be required to send elections officials not only people’s names but also “information showing that the individual is a citizen of the United States.”
The word “automatic” in “automatic voter registration” does not mean that there can be no verification measures.
Daniel Weiner, deputy director of the Election Reform Program at New York University’s liberal Brennan Center for Justice, said in an interview that automatic voter registration “increases the accuracy” of the voter rolls, “not the other way around.”
Registration for 16-year-olds
West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner, a Republican, expressed concerns about the automatic voter registration provisions. Warner warned that the bill “overrules checks and balances in our election security. It mandates AVR, including 16-year-olds.”
Facts First: This needs context.
(It also says “17 year olds may register and vote in primary elections if they turn 18 before the next general election.”)
Criminals and the vote
“This bill is designed to get criminals to vote,” Cruz said. “This bill says, ‘If you’re a murderer, if you’re a rapist, if you’re a child molester, we the Democrats want you voting.’ ”
Facts First: This needs context.
“States would be required to notify these individuals of their re-enfranchisement.”
In a bipartisan vote on March 2, the House voted 328-97 to defeat an amendment from progressive Democrats to extend federal voting rights to people who are still incarcerated.
The prevalence of voter fraud
Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi claimed that voter fraud is “rampant.”
Facts First: This is just not true. Voter fraud is exceedingly rare in the United States. There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 general election.
Voter identification laws
Warner, the West Virginia secretary of state, said the bill “bans ID laws.”
Facts First: This is false.
The bill and a North Carolina scandal
Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi said: “As I recall, a member from North Carolina, a Republican, was elected in a close election and was expelled or not seated from the House of Representatives because he engaged in ballot harvesting, which was illegal under the law of North Carolina but would be not only legal but required to be legal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.”
Facts First: This is misleading.
(Harris declined to run in the new election.)
It’s also worth noting that, according to a National Conference of State Legislatures web post in February, 26 states already permit voters to let someone else submit a ballot for them. Twelve of those states have limits on the number of ballots any one person can collect and return; the Democrats’ bill would not allow such limits.
State proposals
McConnell, arguing that this federal bill is unnecessary, claimed that “states are not engaging in trying to suppress voters, whatsoever.”
Facts First: Since the 2020 election, Republican state legislators around the country have put forward proposals that would make it more difficult to vote. These include stricter identification requirements and reduced access to mail-in ballots, ballot drop boxes, early voting and voter registration.
Here is a Appradab look at what is happening. According to the Brennan Center, the legislatures with the largest number of restrictive bills as of February 19 were in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona, which all flipped from electing Donald Trump in 2016 to Joe Biden in 2020.
Sunday voting in Georgia
Criticizing Republican election proposals in various states, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said that “the most reprehensible effort of all might be found in Georgia, where Republicans recently passed a bill to eliminate early voting on Sunday. On Sunday, a day when many churchgoing African Americans participate in voter drives known as ‘souls to the polls.’ ”
Facts First: This needs context. The current version of the Georgia Republican bill — which has not been passed into law — does not include a ban on early voting on Sundays. On March 1, however, the Georgia House did pass a Republican bill that would have reduced early Sunday voting. The ACLU’s position on the US bill
McConnell said, “This bill is such an attack on citizens’ privacy that even the left-wing ACLU opposes this bill.”
Facts First: McConnell has a solid basis for this claim: The American Civil Liberties Union publicly opposed the bill in 2019, warning, among other things, that it would unconstitutionally infringe on “the right to associational privacy.” However, it’s worth noting for context that the ACLU has since softened its stance — saying that while it continues in 2021 to have serious concerns about certain provisions of the bill, it has not “taken a public position opposing the bill” as a whole this year, spokeswoman Gabriela Meléndez Olivera said in an email. Ticketmaster’s Anti-Scalping Technology Actually Helps Scalpers, Not Fans
Presale tickets for Harry Styles’ world tour went on sale Monday morning, and #Ticketmaster is currently trending on Twitter for exactly the reason you’d think: The onsale was a complete shitshow, as big-ticket concert and sports ticket onsales have been for the last two decades.
Now, fans are upset, scalpers got tons of tickets, and everyone is mad.
This is a familiar story for Ticketmaster. An "onsale" is when people try to buy tickets for an event the moment they go on sale. It usually happens at 10 a.m. local time. For big artists, this means thousands and thousands of people trying to buy tickets at the same time. This often results in Ticketmaster's servers breaking, and the show completely selling out within seconds or minutes. Thus, "onsales" are the only time it's even possible to buy tickets for lots of artists.
On one hand, Ticketmaster is in a difficult position: There are far more people trying to buy tickets for artists like Harry Styles than there are actual tickets available. On the other hand, Ticketmaster keeps breaking its onsale system in new and exotic ways. It has been selling tickets online since 1996 and, if anything, it has gotten harder for fans to buy tickets when they go on sale, not easier.
Tumblr media
Despite Ticketmaster repeatedly saying it cares about fans and hates bots and scalpers, there is little reason to believe this is actually the case. All of its changes to ticket onsales actually benefit scalpers (for a lot of different reasons), and there is simply no reason to believe that Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, even remotely cares about fans. Earlier this year, Live Nation’s president of U.S. concerts Bob Roux was caught directly transferring nearly 90,000 Metallica tickets to the secondary market.
A few years ago, I wrote a feature about Ken Lowson, a ticket scalper who for nearly a decade broke Ticketmaster’s online ticketing systems and was able to vacuum up hundreds of thousands of the best tickets for the most sought after events. In one case, Lowson’s company, Wiseguys Tickets, was able to buy 496 of 500 tickets that were made available during a presale for a U2 concert in New York City.
At the time, Ticketmaster told me that, today, fans can’t buy tickets to shows for major artists because "there are more people who want to go to a show than there are tickets available.”
"For example the 2015 Adele onsale, there were about 10 million people lining up to get tickets and we only had a little over 400,000 tickets. There's a big difference there and we're sensitive to the emotions behind these on sales for passionate fans,” a spokesperson for the company said at the time.
That’s understandable. What is not understandable is that Ticketmaster’s website, apps, and servers continue to crash under the weight of people trying to buy tickets for high profile events, which causes mass confusion, anger, and heartbreak. The company has been doing this for nearly 25 years and still has not figured out how to handle an influx of people pinging its servers during a hot onsale.
A bigger problem, however, is that Ticketmaster is also constantly tweaking how its onsales work: Gone are the days where you merely refresh the page, type in a presale code, click “best available,” enter a captcha, and hope for the best.
Now, Ticketmaster has “waiting rooms” that only allow a certain number of people to buy tickets at once. It also attempts to verify that its users are real people by requiring that they give the company their phone number and enter a verification code sent via SMS, and it only allows each user account to wait in one waiting room at a time.
When a user gets through the waiting room, they are greeted with a buggy and complicated seat map, where you can select specific seats rather than the “best available.” When hundreds of thousands of people are trying to buy tickets at once, this means that the tickets you select might already be spoken for.
There are many places where this process can error out: During the waiting room process, during the ticket selection process, and during the payment process. When I was trying to buy Harry Styles tickets for my sister this morning, I got errored out during both the waiting room process and the payment process. I didn't get any tickets.
For four years during college, I bought and scalped tickets on the side. I didn’t use bots and I wasn’t good at it. I ultimately lost a lot of money. But I did learn quite a lot about the ticket scalping industry. And I learned enough to know that the “anti-scalper” strategies Ticketmaster has deployed in recent years benefits scalpers, not fans.
It is the full-time job of thousands of people in the U.S. and around the world to buy tickets during hectic Ticketmaster onsales and sell them at jacked-up prices. When Ticketmaster tweaks how sales work, scalpers have lots of time and incentive to learn how to optimize for its new systems and to circumvent its anti-scalper tech. By making onsales more complicated, Ticketmaster is hurting average fans who buy tickets using the site only a couple times a year and helping the people who buy tickets every single day, in dozens of different onsales.
There are easy ways to circumvent every new hurdle Ticketmaster has, each of which you are more likely to do if buying tickets is your full-time job:
SMS user verification can be circumvented by creating multiple (or dozens, or hundreds, or thousands) of cell phone numbers using either Google Voice or pay-as-you-go burner phones.
It’s easy to create dozens or hundreds of accounts to allow you to wait in a bunch of different waiting rooms at once, giving you many more bites at the apple. This is something that makes sense for a scalper to do, not a regular fan.
“Fan” presales are not really for fans at all—every serious scalper joins fan clubs and is willing to pay for fan club memberships because they can make money doing so.
Credit card presales benefit scalpers, too, because every scalper has many, many credit cards. This is because having more credit cards makes it easier to circumvent Ticketmaster's ticket limits, but also because ticket scalping requires putting down a lot of money, which is easier on a credit card and scalpers are also obsessed with credit card miles.
The end result in this case is that, while an actual Harry Styles fan has just one chance to buy tickets, which is completely ruined if they run into an error, the average scalper can have dozens of chances to buy tickets. If one transaction errors out, they can have many more browsers and accounts and can simply try again.

I taught my 5th-graders how to spot fake news. Now they won’t stop fact-checking me.
It was a fall day in 2014, and my classroom was full of excitement. My students had transformed themselves into historical figures for a living history project. I was going to broadcast it online so other schools could watch our “Age of Exploration News Conference” live.
One half of the class researched and dressed up as European explorers like Christopher Columbus. The other half acted as news reporters from all the major outlets ready with questions. It was my attempt to bring history to life.
Andy stepped to the mic. Several classes from across America were watching live online. It must have felt like millions of people to a fifth-grader.
Andy was acting as Ferdinand Magellan, the first person traditionally credited with circumnavigating the globe. He stood up tall and leaned into the mic ready to face the media.
“Are there any questions?” Andy, as Ferdinand Magellan, asked the group of energized 10-year-old “reporters.” One quickly got his attention with a loud request.
“Yes, what are you famous for and when did you do much of your exploration?” asked one of my student reporters.
“Well, I am famous for sailing around the world in 1972.”
The class started to laugh. To Andy’s credit, he bounced back from the laughter and the clear embarrassment he felt and finished his news conference strong.
I pulled Andy aside later and asked where he had found the information.
“I Googled it,” he said.
He had been researching online and felt so confident that his answer was accurate. I felt horrible. I had let him down by not teaching him how to test the reliability of a source.
The need to teach students how to vet information is only more urgent now, in the age of "fake news." A recent study showed that on social media, fake news, defined as deliberately falsified news articles created to drive clicks, was shared over 35 million times during our most recent election cycle.
I’ve spent 23 years teaching in a Southern California classroom, and we’re seeing a true bubble of false information online. Here's how I've adapted my curriculum and teaching style to make sure my students know which sources to trust — and which to reject.
I was determined to change the way I help my students critically analyze the information they were finding on the internet
To make sure I wouldn’t have any student in the same situation as Andy ever again, I started asking my students to examine seven different elements of a news article. If the information checks out on each of these points, it has a high likelihood of being accurate. Still, passing the test is not a guarantee that it’s fact.
Copyright: I always ask students to check the bottom of the webpage to see if the information has been submitted for ownership.
Verification with multiple sources: Students must double check the information on a few different web pages. Like in a trial, the more corroborating witnesses, the more likely the truth will be discovered.
Credibility of source, such as between History.com versus a random unknown source: I tell them to check if the source has been recently created. Sources that have been around for a while can show reliability over time and be tested by hindsight, whereas recently created sources don’t carry much of a track record.
Date published: I always ask them to check how recently the page was updated to see how current the information is and whether anything has changed.
Author's expertise and background with the subject: Students should check if the author is someone who has dedicated time and effort to learning this subject. For example, a university professor typically has increased credibility versus a hobbyist.
Does it match your prior knowledge: I ask them if the information matches up with what they have learned before
Does it seem realistic: I tell students to use their common sense. Does something seem authentic or probable?
The only problem was that I hadn’t developed a way for them to put their new knowledge to the test. Sure, I could give a traditional test, but knowing the large amount of testing my class already has to do, I wasn’t willing to add another to their lives.
I had recently started a grassroots effort with a few other educators focused on infusing play back into the lives of children. The program is called Global School Play Day. As a big believer in the concept of “play to learn,” I wanted to put my students in a situation that allowed them to play with the fake news, and even create some themselves to understand how easy it is to share.
I shifted again with the most recent election cycle to a classroom game
I needed my students to understand that “fake news” is news that is being reported as accurate, but lacks reliability and credibility. A good example are the widely shared stories of the pope endorsing one presidential candidate over another. I decided to devise a game, the goal being to tell fake news from real news.
The first place I went to is world renowned for their creation of fake news: the Onion. I knew it would be a simple jumping-off point for finding things my students could research to see if it was fake or true.
We then used a great site for kids called Newsela.com, which takes articles from multiple sources and makes them accessible to a variety of reading abilities. This would serve as the real news website. From there, I explained the rules of the game we would play. Then the game was on!
Imagine a Simon Says style game where I present an article found on the web on a projector. Students research for two to three minutes, then respond by standing or staying seated to signal if they believe the article is true or fake. My students absolutely loved the game. Some refused to go to recess until I gave them another chance to figure out the next article I had queued.
Simon Says for fake news seemed to hook the kids in, but I wanted to provide a deeper opportunity for understanding so the concept would really stick. The popular gameshow To Tell The Truth was a bit before my time, but I had seen enough to understand the idea. On the show, three people would speak to a panel of celebrity experts who would try to figure out who was telling the truth about their identity. The panel of experts was given a chance to do their own research by asking questions. I took the main concept of that show, gave it a twist, and have now landed on our own version.
The Simon Says-style game has morphed now so that we can challenge other classes. Each class has three students on camera using Skype, then reads three news stories. Only one is fake. Students work in teams to see if they can be the first to prove which of the three is the “fake news.” Classes trade turns between sharing the stories and identifying the fake news.
What started out as an in-class learning game has shifted to an online game with classes from anywhere across the United States.
From “Is this true, Mr. Bedley?” to “This Is true, Mr. Bedley!”
The kids really enjoyed the fake news stories. It gave them something to laugh, talk, and debate about. But the game has also led to a class discussion on whether we should support sources that share fake news. There were several references to the tabloid magazines sold near the checkout register in the grocery store. Ultimately, my students expressed the importance of being able to identify which news is fake and how this content can be used to manipulate them and their decisions.
The challenge for my students comes back to understanding the difference between someone who is sharing their opinion and someone who is creating news that is meant to mislead, either as clickbait or to influence those who don’t take the time to verify accuracy. We talk about how facts can be verified, whereas opinions typically can be supported with evidence, but are far more debatable and take a position within the debate. Now that my students have a greater understanding of fake news, our new game for the end of the year will be “Fake or Opinion” instead of “Fact or Opinion.”
It’s interesting what you overhear as a teacher. We hear a lot, and this election cycle had more of my 10- and 11-year-old students talking politics with each other than any other year I’ve taught during a presidential election cycle. Through those conversations, I could hear fear, confusion, and misunderstandings. It was one of the reasons I needed to encourage my students to read and learn more on their own, which turned me back to the question of how they identify misinformation and fake news and ultimately to the learning game I created for them.
I set out to help my students read news more critically, and I feel that these games have shifted the way my students approach online content every day. Time will only tell if this lasts beyond my classroom, but the early impact outcomes are very positive. One unintended consequence is that I now have 33 10-year-old fact-checkers in my classroom that I’ve empowered to call me out if I’m sharing fake news.
Confession: I still love to slip fake news in about the content we are studying to keep sharpening their skills.

Fraud Attempt Using Equifax Data Breach Personal Information and Masquerading as Santander
Tumblr media
I have never seen such a well-engineered fraud attempt, so I thought that I absolutely must share it with my readers for your own protection. I will also note that it was something that I began to actually fall for, but then started to see red flags. I will note the red flags I saw in red and I'll note the red flags that I should have seen but did not, in orange. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Santander and the customer service representative that helped me identify this fraudulent attempt. I was ending my day at work this afternoon when my cell phone rang with a toll-free number (877) 768-2265. I didn't immediately recognize the number, so I figured I'd let it go to voicemail and if it's legit, they'd leave a voicemail. Well, no voicemail. Then I got another call, and another, and another. Seven calls later I finally pick up the phone, "Hello?" "Hello, this is Daniel Morgan from Santander's fraud prevention department, is this Mr. Stadtlander?" the man asks. "It is," I reply. "Is your home address ***************, Massachusetts?" "It is." "Do you have a debit card ending in ****?" "Yes, it's right here in my pocket." "We are showing two charges at a Walmart in Atlanta, Georgia for $280.87. Are you currently in Atlanta sir?" "No, I'm in Boston." "This was registered as an alert in our system and we wanted to reach out to you to resolve this. Do you have a few minutes?" the man says. "Yes of course," I reply. "We would like to close this card and send you out a new one. Let me just confirm that there are no other charges appearing other than these two. One moment." He did not bother to verify any transactions with me. This did not occur to me until later. There is silence as he 'checks his computer'. A moment later he comes back, "Yes. It looks like those are the only attempts. We will need to send out you out a new card just to be safe. Can you verify your mailing address as **************?" "Yes, that's correct." "And the best number to reach you is ***************?" he asked stating my cell phone number. Yes, that is correct." I reply. "And your debit card ends in **** with an expiration of ** of ****?" "That's correct." "Ok, we will send out a new card via Fed-ex and you should have it by tomorrow. Let me just check with my supervisor that we can waive the $15.00 charge for overnighting it." Despite my irritation that someone must have been using my card, my eyebrow raises, why would they charge me to overnight a card if I'm their customer? But, I go along with it. In the meantime, I put him on speaker and google the phone number, which sure enough comes back as Santander's customer service number. I am aware that it is not hard to spoof (fake) a caller ID number, I've demonstrated how to do it myself. But at this point, I'm not on full alert yet. A moment later he comes back on and says, "Ok, no problem. We can have this to you by tomorrow morning. We want to reset the PIN as we aren't allowed to use the default pin. What is your current PIN so we can reset it?" WHAT?! Why on EARTH would they need my PIN? I think to myself. Now my 'bullshit' antennas are quivering like there's a thunderstorm coming. "I'm sorry, I'm not comfortable providing that over the phone," I reply. "I can understand your concerns sir, I assure you that this is just to protect your own confidentiality and ensure that we expedite your card back to you as soon as possible." he begins calmly. "If it helps, I can verify additional personal information." "Ok, thank you," I say. (At this point not believing a word that's coming out of his mouth.) "Can I verify that your date of birth is __________ and your social security number is _________?" repeating back to me my true date of birth and my full social security number. My jaw drops open and my mind is reeling. "Yes, that's correct," I begin, "My PIN is _____." I stated, giving him a fake PIN, then I say "can you hold for just one second, I have an emergency call coming in on the other line from my child's doctor. One second." "Certainly sir, I'll hold and see if I can get this input while I wait," he states and I press the mute button. I get on my work line and dial the same number that called me (which is also on Santander's website) and after a series of verification prompts a woman picks up. "Hello, this is Beth (name changed to protect her identity) from Santander, how can I help you." I take a moment to explain the whole situation to her and I can sense her jaw also dropping open. "What?! We would never ask you for your PIN and we would never give out your social security number." At this point, the man is asking if I'm still there and I ask her to stay on the line and listen in to the speaker call on my cell phone which she graciously agrees to. "Hello, I'm sorry - are you still there?" I ask the man. "Yes. Not a problem Mr. Stadtlander. I entered your PIN into our system and it says that the PIN is incorrect, is there a chance you gave me the wrong PIN?" "No, it was definitely the correct PIN." Then Beth says to me in the other ear, "Ask him for his name and employee ID." "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name, what is your name and employee ID? I'm just taking notes here and want to make sure I get everything." "Certainly sir," he begins, "My name is Daniel Morgan and my employee ID is 45321409." In my other ear, Beth states "Nope. Our employee IDs do not use that format. This is completely made up. Ask him to speak to his supervisor." "I'm sorry, Daniel, can I speak to your supervisor?" I ask. "Certainly sir, one moment." There is a pause of about a minute and then another male voice comes on the phone, "Hello, this Roger with Santander. I understand my colleague attempting to help you by getting a replacement card out to you? How can I help?" "I'm sorry, what was your name?" I ask. "Roger Smear." "Thank you, Roger. I'm sorry can you hold one second, I have an emergency call I am still trying to deal with, just give me two seconds." "Absolutely Mr. Stadtlander." Beth and I are both in shock at the level of detail on this and she recommends that I let him know that I have Santander Fraud Prevention on the other line and see what he does. "Hello, Roger are you still there." "I am, do you have that PIN so that we can help get your card reset?" he asks. "Actually, I just have a question. I have Santander's Fraud Prevention and the local police tied in on the other line and they feel that things aren't adding up. Do you mind if I patch you in?" One second later he hangs up. Now, I thanked Beth graciously and she did some further investigating while I had her on the phone and she was able to determine that there were two attempts to check my account balance using my debit card in Las Vegas a few minutes prior. But it registered as an invalid PIN and did not work. We talked for a bit and she also told me that she had recorded the entire conversation which I was happy for. She then helps me to cancel my card and send out a new one. I am still floored at the level of detail and social engineering that went into this. As best I can figure, they got my debit card number and expiration (most likely from a card scanner in an ATM - it's easy to do) and then matched up my relatively unique name to my information in the Equifax Data Breach (to which I am also one of the millions of victims). Please, I cannot state this enough - be very aware anytime anyone is asking anything from you. Get validation and if there are any doubts, call your bank on the other line and confirm the validity. I would hate to guess how many people fall for this scam. Read the full article

The Takeaway
Best Places to Sell Phones Online
To start, the best places to sell phones is going to be online. There are a ton of great places to choose from, but if you want to make this quick and simple; we recommend BuybackBoss to start.
1. BuybackBoss
BuybackBoss is our first choice when it comes to selling your old phone online. For starters, they guarantee to give you the highest price for your device. They also have a Trustpilot rating of 9.6 out 10.
If you find somewhere online that offers you a better price, you can simply send them an email (explanation on their website) with a link to the higher offer. Once they see the better offer, they will update your offer to beat their competitors and notify you once it’s ready to go.
They have three simple steps when it comes to selling your old phone.
First you will head over to their site and get a quote in 30 seconds or less. Next, you will ship your used phone for free and even track your shipment as well. Once your item is shipped, you get the choice of getting paid via check or through PayPal.
With a high Trustpilot rating and the guarantee that they will be the best price, it’s obvious why we started with BuybackBoss.
2. Deculttr
Decluttr is a close second choice when it comes to selling your old phone. They have paid out over $300 million to over 6 million people and have Trustpilot rating of 8.9 out of 10.
youtube
  Sell on Decluttr Now
  How it works:
Very similar to BuybackBoss, but they do have an updated app and offer two more payment options beyond PayPal and check. They can pay via direct deposit or even a donation to a charity.
Decluttr has definitely been one of the pioneers when it comes to selling your old phone, however they don’t guarantee the highest price which is why we put them at #2.
3. Amazon & Amazon Trade-In Program
With Amazon you can sell your phone two different ways. You can use Amazon’s Trade-In program and get an Amazon gift card for your phone, or you can sell your phone directly on the site and get cash from a third party buyer.
If you’re okay with having an Amazon Gift Card for your phone instead of cash, the trade-in program could be the way to go, although you may not get as much money for your phone since Amazon will still need to make a profit by reselling it.
When I checked my old Moto G phone on Amazon’s trade-in site, they were paying “up to” $6.80 for similar trade in models.
However, when I searched “used Moto G phones” on the traditional Amazon shopping site, I found I would pay between $30 and $60 for a used one. Even after listing and selling fees you’ll likely get more money selling your phone to a third party when you use Amazon.
The Good: Large audience and everyone uses an Amazon Gift Card.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your old phone.
4. Gazelle
Gazelle buys old cell phones directly from private party sellers for the purpose of reselling them. It’s easy to sell through Gazelle – no waiting for someone to take your offer or meeting up with them.
You just hit the “sell” button on the site, enter your phone make and model and they’ll give you an offer price. After you accept their offer price, Gazelle will send you a free shipping label and then pay you via an Amazon gift card, via PayPal or they’ll send you a check.
Also, keep in mind Gazelle does not buy all phone models nor do they buy phones tied to all carriers. You’ll have to check their site for specific info on which types of phones they buy.
The Good: Extremely quick, completely free to sell and multiple options for payout.
The Bad: Not all phone models will be bought back from you.
5. eBay
You probably already know at least a little bit about how eBay works. A few notes about selling your used cell phone on eBay:
Be sure to include a buffer for listing and selling fees in as you price your phone
Use other similar sold phones and listings when determining a phone price point
Decide ahead of time whether or not you’ll offer free shipping (it often makes an attractive lure for potential buyers) and then consider that cost as you choose your listing price as well
The Good: Large audience and opportunity to sell back to the retailer for higher profit.
The Bad: Communicating with potential buyers, creating your listing and then shipping your item.
6. Gadget Gobbler
Gadget Gobbler works similarly to sites like Gazelle: you get a quote for your phone, get a free shipping label once you’ve accepted their offer, and get paid from them after you send in your phone and they examine it.
One difference between Gadget Gobbler and Gazelle is that Gadget Gobbler pays via PayPal or a check only – no Amazon gift card option available. But personally, I’d prefer cash anyway. 🙂
Again, remember when you’re selling to companies that plan on reselling your phone for a profit that you’ll probably get less for the phone, although the process is super easy and streamlined compared to trying to sell it to a private party.
The Good: Payout is via a check or PayPal and a very simple selling process.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your phone.
7. Nextworth
Nextworth will also make an offer for your phone and send you a prepaid shipping label. After you accept their offer and ship your phone, they’ll pay you in the form of a PayPal deposit or they’ll mail you a check.
One thing to note about many of the companies that buy back your phone directly is they will analyze your phone once they receive it to be sure it matches the condition you said it was in when you got your offer.
If your phone is in worse condition than you stated, you may get less than originally agreed upon. Nextworth has a cool feature in that they’ll forgive any price differences (i.e. if the phone is worth less than what you were initially offered due to it being in worse condition) up to $10 and pay you as promised anyway.
That’s a feature you won’t find very often with other companies.
The Good: They send prepaid shipping label and payment via PayPal or check.
The Bad: You may get less than what you had originally agreed upon.
8. Wirefly
Wirefly is a cell phone and cell phone service retailer that pays you cash when you send in your used cell phone.
As with most companies, you need to state the condition of your phone and then send it in to be evaluated. Once they determine it’s in the condition you stated it is, they’ll pay you cash via Paypal, or you have a few other options as well.
The Good: Multiple forms of payment including cash.
The Bad: Not as fast as other selling sites.
9. SellBroke
SellBroke will buy your used cell phones (and other electronic items) even if they no longer work. As with most companies, you need to enter the description of your item with them, and they’ll give you a quote.
Once you’ve accepted their offer they’ll send you a prepaid shipping label and you can send in your item for evaluation.
Payment is made via PayPal or by check – whichever you prefer.
The Good: They may also buyback other used electronics from you as well.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your used electronics as you could elsewhere.
10. Gadget Salvation
Gadget Salvation works the same as many other companies: get a quote for your phone, a free shipping label if you agree to the quote, and they’ll pay you after they receive and assess your device.
These guys will pay you via PayPal, Venmo or Chase QuickPay.
The Good: If you find a better price for your phone from a qualifying competitor, Gadget Salvation will pay you that price plus 5% more.
The Bad: You may not get as much as you could private party.
11. MaxBack
MaxBack will quote you for your cell phone and send you a prepaid shipping label like the others. However, they offer one important difference: they’ll guarantee your quote for up to 30 days.
Prices in the world of used electronics change rapidly, so this could be a great incentive to use MaxBack as opposed to a company that won’t give a 30-day guarantee.
Remember though that all quotes are subject to verification of the phone’s condition as stated when the quote was given. MaxBack will pay you via PayPal or they’ll send you a check.
The Good: They will guarantee your quote for up to 30 days and multiple ways to get paid out.
The Bad: The cost of the convenience with MaxBack may eat into your profit.
Best Places to Sell Phones Near You
I’m sharing a variety of different avenues here for selling your old cell phone. Each works a bit differently so be sure to read the fine print so you know what you’re required to give – and how much money you’ll get – when you sell your phone.
Although we believe the best place to sell phones is always going to be online, some of you are still a little old school. If you don’t mind taking a drive to a storefront or kiosk, here are some of the best places you sell your phones near you.
12. EcoATM
EcoATM has kiosks across the country where you can deposit your old cell phone, have evaluated and get cash on the spot.
There are over 2,700 EcoATM kiosks across the country, according to the company’s website. EcoATM also takes steps to help ensure a phone can’t be stolen and deposited into a kiosk.
You need to submit a valid state ID if you’re going to deposit a phone into an EcoATM kiosk, and they will also take steps to prevent misuse of the information on your old phone as well.
This could be a good option if you want cash fast.  Also, if you decide you don’t want to accept their price, they’ll give you your phone back.
The Good: The fastest way to get cash for used phone if kiosk near you.
The Bad: You probably won’t be getting top dollar for your used phone.
13. Craigslist
Craigslist (or similar sites) are also popular venues for selling your used cell phone. You can probably get more for your phone if you sell it on Craigslist than you would by selling to a vendor – provided you are selling directly to a private party that wants to keep the phone for themselves.
Some private parties on Craigslist do buy used cell phones for the purpose of reselling them, which could potentially reduce your profit. However if you sell to someone wishing to keep and use the phone, you will likely get more money.
Search other similar listings on Craigslist to give you an idea of how much you should ask for your phone, and have a bottom-line dollar amount you’ll accept before you post your listing so that you’ll be prepared to haggle.
The Good: You will likely get the most money using Craigslist.
The Bad: The hassle factor of meeting up to sell your item is higher.
14. Walmart Trade-In Program
Like Amazon and others, Walmart will also buy your used cell phone, most often for the purpose of refurbishing and re-selling it.
After they make you an offer – and you accept their offer – they’ll send you a free shipping label with which to send the phone in. In return you’ll get a Walmart eGift card.
Could be a good choice if you like to shop at Walmart, but don’t expect to get a large offer for your phone, especially if it’s an older one.
The Good: Walmart does it all for you.
The Bad: Payment is limited to Walmart gift card.
15. BestBuy
With the Best Buy Trade-in Program you can get a Best Buy gift card for your used cell phone if you trade it in.
The main difference I could find between the Best Buy trade-in program and some of the others is that there are a few items Best Buy will only let you trade if you purchased the item at Best Buy and still have the receipt.
This rule seems to apply to local restrictions in some states/cities and not to Best Buy as a whole, according to their website.
The Good: Very fast and easy and great for BestBuy shoppers.
The Bad: Some phones will only be accepted if they were purchased at BestBuy and you have the receipt.
16. Target Trade-In Program
Target’s trade-in program works similarly to Walmart’s. You search your device on their website to get an offer. After you accept the offer you send it to them via a prepaid shipping label.
After they receive and assess your device, you’re sent a Target gift card for the agreed-upon amount – provided the phone is in the shape you said it was. Then you’re off to shop!
Again, this could be a good choice if you shop at Target frequently, but if you want actual cash for your phone you’ll want to choose another option.
The Good: Very fast and easy and great for Target shoppers.
The Bad: You’re limited to a Target gift card instead of a cash.
17. Gamestop
Gamestop also accepts cell phones for trade-in through their trade-in program. One different thing about Gamestop is that they’ll give you an option of either taking store credit or a cash payout.
Keep in mind you will receive more for your phone if you choose store credit than you would if you chose a cash payout.
The Good: Great for Gamestop shoppers and they also offer cash payout.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your phone as if you sold it private party.
18. Facebook Buy and Sell Groups
You could try Facebook to sell your used cell phone. There are buy and sell groups that specifically promote cell phone sales, or you could just try and sell yours on a buy and sell group in your area, which would probably be the easiest route.
The nice thing about Facebook is you won’t pay any listing or sale fees, and you have the potential to reach a larger audience right in your local area.
The Good: Free to list your phone which results in higher profit.
The Bad: There is the hassle factor of selling your phone private party.
Other Options to Sell Used Phone
19. GizMogul
GizMogul promises “free shipping, fast payments, highest payout guaranteed” on their website. It sure wouldn’t hurt to at least get a quote from them for your device with those kinds of promises.
Like most companies they’ll send you a free shipping label, and they pay via PayPal (or they’ll send you a check) once they’ve verified the condition of your phone.
The Good: They promise highest payouts if you sell to them.
The Bad: Nothing that stands out to us.
20. YouRenew
YouRenew will buy your old cell phone and other electronic items as well. Simply search your device, get the offer, accept the offer, ship your item (they’ll give you a free shipping label from UPS), and they’ll pay you once they evaluate your phone.
From what I could tell, YouRenew pays only via check, however. This could leave you having to wait for your money via snail mail time.
The Good: They will also buy back old electronics in addition to your phone.
The Bad: They only payout via check.
21. uSell
uSell has paid out over $46 million to people who’ve sent in their used cell phones to their company. Apparently they’re doing something right.
One cool thing about uSell is that they’ll send you an entire free shipping kit – box included – if you sell your phone to them.
And they’ll pay via check or via PayPal, which means you can get your money faster.
The Good: They have an incredible track record and have been around a while.
The Bad: Nothing that stands out to us.
22. Buy Back World
Buy Back World will also send you a free shipping kit if you choose to sell your used cell phone to them.
They pay in a number of different ways:
Paypal
Direct deposit to your bank account
Prepaid debit card
Gift card for Buy Back World
If you choose to take the gift card for Buy Back World, they’ll add an extra 5% onto your offer price.
The Good: You can get an additional 5% if you take the gift card and they have direct deposit to your checking account.
The Bad: Not as quick as some of the other sites from what we can see.
23. Green Buyback
Green Buyback promises to process your used cell phone payment faster than anyone else in the industry. If you’re looking for money super fast, this could be the way to go.
Their process is the same as most other companies: choose your phone, get your quote, ship it, have it assessed and get your cash.
The Good: Promises to be the fastest process against their competitors.
The Bad: Nothing that stands out to us.
24. ItsWorthMore
ItsWorthMore buys many models of cell phones, and other electronic items as well. After you accept your quote they’ll send you a free shipping label, and they’ll pay you via PayPal or check.
They promise to pay within 72 hours of receiving your phone or other electronic item.
The Good: Promises to be the fastest process against their competitors.
The Bad: You will have to wait up to 72 hours for payment.
Other Places Worth Mentioning
25. Itemcycle.com
Itemcycle only buys used Apple and Mac products, so if you have a used iPhone you want to sell you could potentially check out these guys.
They’ll send you a free prepaid shipping label (sounds like you’ll have to find your own box) and will pay via PayPal or via a check.
The Good: They will payout via PayPal or check.
The Bad: They only buy Apple and Mac products.
26. iPhone Antidote
iPhone Antidote, you can probably guess, only buys used iPhones. Why? Probably because they generally sell for more on the used market.
They’ll send you a prepaid shipping kit like uSell does, with a box included. They pay via a check or via PayPal, and they promise not to lower the offer price for your phone provided you’ve chosen the correct model and condition.
The Good: You can get paid out via PayPal or a check in the mail.
The Bad: They only buy back used iPhones.
27. Your Wireless Carrier
One place to check to sell your used phone is directly with your Wireless carrier. Although not all wireless carriers will buy back your phone, many will. Here is a list of some wireless carriers that may consider buying back your used phone:
AT&T
Verizon
T-Mobile
Check directly with your carrier for more information on selling your used cell phone to them.
The Good: You already know and trust your own carrier.
The Bad: Not all carriers with buyback your old phones.
The Takeaway
Many of us have old cell phones collecting dust in drawers or merely acting as paper weights. However, as you can see there are plenty of options for generating a little extra spending money with very little effort on your part.
The general rule of thumb is this: If you’re looking to get the most money for your old phone, you’re going to want to sell your phone for free on sites like Craigslist or Facebook. There of course is a little more hassle this route, but the more hassle usually results in the bigger payoff.
But, if you’re looking to simply get rid of the phone fast, I would recommend choosing one of the sites listed above that does all the groundwork for you. Not sure which site is going to be the best option? Then I would choose based on how they compensate you or what they compensate you with (cash, Paypal, gift card, store credit, etc.)
Lastly, don’t forget to clear your personal information out of your old phone.
Have you sold your old cell phones to any of these companies? If so, we’d love to hear about your experience.
Simply drop a comment below and tell us about your experience (good or bad) with selling your old phone.

Unemployment Scammer Spills Secrets: Illinois Easy Target Because 'They Don’t Verify Anything' By Dorothy Tucker CHICAGO (CBS) — You’ve heard a lot about fraud in the state’s unemployment system, but you’ve never heard this: A scammer spills his secrets — how he steals your taxpayer dollars, leaving those desperately needing benefits stuck in limbo. CBS 2 Investigator Dorothy Tucker went inside the scheme and uncovers why Illinois is a favorite target. Cynthia Sawaneh couldn’t believe what CBS 2 showed her on her computer. The information she was looking at usually lurks in the shadows, meant for criminals who are aiming to make millions, targeting taxpayers like Sawaneh. “This is really scary. Oh my God,” she said after reading the words on the screen. “They got my money.” The CBS 2 Investigators showed Sawaneh a 19-page guide. It’s a how-to on filing fraudulent unemployment claims. “It’s like any other step-by-step tutorial,” said Crane Hassold, who is the Senior Director of Threat Research at Agari, a business email security firm. “It walks you through exactly what questions to answer.” Before Agari, Hassold worked in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, investigating national security threats and serial criminals, like those scamming unemployment systems across the country, including here in Illinois. “They’ve adapted their tactics,” he said. His job at Agari is to cultivate a network of sources, willing to sell their scamming secrets. “We’ve been able to build those sources over the past year or so,” he said. As a result of the connections made, Hassold knows their tactics and the tutorial well. “It’s a lot of screenshots and very brief descriptions of how you should fill out the information,” he said. The tutorial for Illinois describes which section to leave blank, when to click next and where to answer “no.” It also describes how to fill out the phone number — just find the area code and the rest can be “rubbish”. “What’s really surprising is how open a lot of these cybercriminals are to share how they do what they do,” said Hassold. The scammers are also telling Hassold and his team how they get their hands on the money. “Once a claim has actually been filed and everything’s processing, it provides the user with an opportunity to change that direct deposit method,” said Hassold. Translation: it makes it easy for the thief to steer stolen funds to an accessible account. We’re not telling you where or how to find the tutorials, but we will say it took us less than 24 hours to get an offer to buy one.  All it took was a series of text messages with someone with a tutorial to sell and pictures to prove it. The asking price? $50 in bitcoin or cash. “It’s completely disgusting that this exists,” said Ofer Eckstein who is a partner at Personnel Planners, a third-party vendor helping clients process unemployment claims. Describing the amount of fraud right now, he said, “It’s terrible.” His clients feel the pain. Personnel Planners has 1,200 across the state representing school districts, healthcare facilities and restaurants. His clients employ about 200,000 people. “Over 50% of the claims that we receive in our office are fraudulent claims,” Eckstein said. Before the pandemic he said it was “Less than 1%.” The bogus claims Eckstein sees are just a fraction of the fraud. The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported, between March 2020 and January 2021, it had stopped close to one million fraudulent claims. Cynthia Sawaneh’s case is one of them. After her work hours cut back from 40 hours a week to just 16 hours, she applied for unemployment benefits in late October. She received one deposit, $397, before getting a letter from IDES saying, “…that my identity had been compromised. Therefore, my unemployment was ceased,” said Sawaneh. Like so many identity theft victims, she knows scammers have her personal information, “My employer, my address, my name, my date of birth,” she said. But Sawaneh has one big outstanding question. “I would really like to know how they got my information,” she asked. Here’s how. Scammers bought it, probably off the dark web. It’s the same place criminals shop for drugs, guns, fake passports and social security numbers. Paul Petefish, with Chicago’s Evolve Security, showed CBS 2 how easy it is to find those things. “Right here we have list of markets,” he said. A five-minute search turned up nearly 500 vendors. “This is somebody’s driver’s license,” said Petefish.   Precious personal information for sale collected from massive data breaches in the past. Among those: The 2013 hack of three billion Yahoo accounts that exposed names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, passwords as well as security questions and answers. The 2018 hack of 500 million Marriott accounts revealing customers’ names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, birthdates and gender. Hackers also got some payment card numbers and expiration dates according to the Federal Trade Commission. The 2017 hack of Equifax where the personal identifiable information of 147 million people got stolen, including their names, social security numbers, birthdates, addresses and in some cases, their driver’s license numbers. What’s the cost to buy that information now, all these years later? “This one’s $40. This one’s $8,” said Petefish. Who is buying this information and then using it to steal identities, file fake claims and slow down benefits for the jobless or underemployed who are struggling, like Sawaneh? Her unemployment benefits suddenly stopped and her identity appeared to have been compromised. She now visits food banks frequently to feed her family.  “It’s things I find myself doing that I’ve never had to do before,” she said. Another first: “All my bills are behind,” said Sawaneh. Even her mortgage.  “There are times that bills come in and you don’t bother to look at them because it just depresses you,” she said. She had just bought her very first home and now worries about losing it. “I never would have dreamed that I would have to go through this,” said Sawaneh. Scammers could not care less about her struggle to keep food on the table, make a dent in the growing pile of bills or keep her dream home. Many of them reside far away from the South Side of Chicago where Sawaneh lives. They live in the dark recesses of Russia, Europe, and West Africa. “A lot of the scammers are young, They’re quite highly educated,” said Crane Hassold whose sources are in Nigeria. “It’s a job. This is how they make their living,” he said. So, he pays them $150 in cryptocurrency, untraceable money, to talk. “They want to brag about the crimes that they’re committing,” said Hassold. What one scammer told him about our unemployment system will make you cringe. The scammer said: “They don’t verify anything. What they just check is, is the name and the social security number the same? Is the date of birth on the Social Security number correct? That’s the only thing we have to get right on our part. Once they have gotten those kinds of information, it is over?” And get this, scammers consider IDES an easier target than most. Why? “Primarily because of some of the restrictions that are not in place in Illinois may be in place in other states,” Hassold explained. He means better security measures like in Oklahoma, where a new identity verification tool was put in place in November. It’s a Digital ID program from IDEMIA. Oklahomans who file unemployment claims are now required to upload their driver’s license and take a selfie. The new tool uses facial recognition technology to make sure the faces match. “And this picture was taken recently and wasn’t pulled off the website or something like that,” said Shelley Zumwalt, the Executive Director at the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC). In just the first month using the new identity tool called VerifyOK, OESC saw fraud cases drop by 40%, verified and paid 100,000 legit claimants and saved taxpayers $20 million. “It helped quite a bit,” said Zumwalt. How long will it help? “This is a very difficult group of people to stay one step ahead of,” said Michele Evermore with the National Employment Law Project. She works with states to improve their unemployment systems and make them more secure. “After they figured out how to shut them out one way, the fraudsters figured out another way to get in,” she said. “Wherever there is an opportunity to make money, a lot of these scammers really jump on and try to make as much money as they can,” said Hassold. Making money at the expense of faceless victims like Sawaneh. “We don’t know them. We don’t know who they are. We don’t familiarize with them. It’s just an hustle to us over here,” said the scammer Hassold paid for his insight. What’s a hustle to the overseas scammer is harmful to people here in Illinois, like Sawaneh, waiting on benefits, trying to make ends meet and worrying about the future. “It’s been stressful to me. Many nights of no sleep. Waking up early, walking back and forth around the house. It’s a terrifying situation to live in,” she said. The question is what is IDES doing to stop scammers? We asked. The agency didn’t exactly answer that question. However, last week the agency did release a statement announcing new requirements. Now, all pandemic unemployment claimants will have to upload a paycheck stub, W-2 or some other proof of employment. Will this prevent fraud? We’ll have to wait to see.
