Tony Stark’s Guide to Being a Functional Adult
Step 4: More Basic Adulting (AO3)
“Tony? Did you run the dishwasher this morning?” Bucky asked in an odd voice. The kind of voice that sounded like he already knew the answer but he just wanted Tony to admit guilt first before chewing him out.
“Uh, yeah?” The bottom dropped out of Tony’s stomach as he and joined Bucky in the kitchen where he was staring down into the dishwasher. He looked at the dishwasher too but didn’t see a problem. “Why?”
Bucky stared at him in disbelief. “There’s like, five dishes in here.”
“It was my turn to do the dishes,” Tony said defensively. “So I did them.”
“Well, yeah, thanks for that, but don’t run the dishwasher unless it’s full. That’s a huge waste of water,” Bucky said slowly, making Tony feel like even more of an idiot. “If you do that after every meal our water bill is going to be astronomical.”
“Oh. I didn’t think about that, I’m sorry.”
“Why don’t you-” Bucky stopped and pressed his lips together into a thin line. He closed his eyes, inhaled slowly and exhaled even more slowly. “I’m sorry,” he said after a moment. “I get these, you know, days where I feel really anxious and stressed out and it makes me…” he drummed his fingers on the counter. “Snappish, I guess. Pissy.”
Tony stared for a minute. “It’s okay,” he said, confused about why Bucky was apologizing. Howard had never apologized, not even the time he had given Tony that scar on the bottom of his chin. “I’ll do better next time, I promise”
“How about from now on, I load the dishwasher, and you do whatever is left in the sink and wipe down the counters?”
“Sure, yeah, sounds good.” He paused, watching Bucky as he started to grab the few dishes out of the dishwasher and said hesitantly, “Are you feeling stressed out right now?”
“No. Yes. I don’t know.” Bucky’s movements were jerky and his shoulders were tight, so Tony put a hand on his arm.
“Hey, I’ll straighten this up,” he said, taking the plates from Bucky’s hands. “Is there something you usually do when you feel like this?”
Bucky let him have the plates and sighed, leaning against the counter and running his hand through his hair. “Yeah, my therapist gave me tips to deal with days like today.”
“Well, then go do what you need to do, I got this. I’ll even open up the garage if you want, just come down when you’re ready.”
(More after the break!)
Bucky nodded gratefully and disappeared into his bedroom. Tony put the dishes away and wiped everything down until he was pretty sure that even Jarvis would be impressed, then went down to the garage.
Tony opened up the big metal garage doors so he could hear and see the pounding of the rain outside; it had been the sound of the rain on Bucky’s roof that had woken him up that morning, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Tony felt at peace while he laid there and listened to it. They didn’t have any cars in yet, so as Tony surveyed the shop he figured that if there was one thing he could clean properly, it was a garage, so he metaphorically rolled up his sleeves, grabbed a shop cloth, and got to work. He made it halfway through the tool cabinet when his phone rang, so he wiped his hands on his jeans and answered. “Hey, Rhodey, what’s up?” he said cheerfully.
“Not much. How are you doing? Sleeping in your car or did you find a place to stay?”
“I found a place to stay,” Tony said, straightening all the socket wrenches so they were lined up neatly according to size. “I found a guy renting out a room who also owns a garage, so I found a place to stay and a job all in one.”
“Oh, yeah?” Tony could tell that Rhodey’s attention had been piqued by something from the way his tone sharpened. “Tell me about this guy.”
“Not much to say,” Tony said, suddenly wary. He found a couple of lug wrenches leaning against the bench so he hung them up on the wall. “His name is Bucky and it’s his family’s business, he bought them out when he got out of the Army.”
“So he’s cute.”
“What?” Tony protested as he started separating the spanners from the adjustable wrenches. “I never said that.”
“You just did. Methinks you are protesting too much.”
“Methinks you are an asshole,” Tony muttered.
“Let me guess. Is he tall?”
Tony sighed because he was so busted. “Yes.”
“Dark hair?”
“Yes.”
“And military, huh?”
“Ok, look, I don’t know where you are going with this-“
“Just saying, Tones, you have a type.” Tony could hear Rhodey’s grin through the phone and he scowled.
“I never should have told you I had a crush on you in college,” Tony complained. “I take back all the nice things I’ve ever said about you.”
“Nah, you still love me. So how’s everything else going?”
It wasn’t much more than a couple of hours before Bucky came downstairs to find Tony organizing and wiping down everything on the tool bench. The radio was on, playing something soft and low, and Tony was humming along, swaying gently to the music. Bucky whistled, impressed by how nice the garage looked.
Tony looked up, and his smile made Bucky’s heart turn over in his chest. Tony’s smile was rapidly becoming something that Bucky looked forward to every day. “Hey, Buck. Feeling better?”
Bucky shrugged. “Rainy days are usually not the best for me,” he said, trying and probably failing to sound casual. “It was raining like this when, you know,” he gestured towards his empty sleeve. For some reason, when Tony’s eyes went soft and sympathetic it made him feel understood, not patronized. Perhaps because his look didn’t immediately turn to morbid curiosity.
“I’m sorry, B,” he said simply. “I’m glad you’re feeling up to working today, but if you need to go back upstairs, I can-”
“No, I’m okay,” Bucky said, not wanting to seem like an invalid. “I mean, a while ago I would have been spending all day in bed with a rainstorm like this, but it’s…” he wanted to say fine, but it wasn’t, really, he still couldn’t go out in the rain and listening to it drumming on the sidewalk was making the hair on the back of his neck rise. “Better.”
Tony smiled at him and patted the now clean work bench. “Have a seat, I made coffee,” he said, and he turned up the music so the rain didn’t seem quite as loud.
“You know how the Middle East gets these like, huge dust storms?” Bucky said as he accepted the cup from Tony. “This one time while I was in Iraq we had a dust storm and a rain storm at the same time.”
“So it became a mud storm?”
“Yeah. Raining mud.” Bucky took a sip of coffee, eyes far away. “God, that was miserable. Mud in your clothes, your hair, the way you tracked it everywhere you went. You would go take a shower and be muddy again by the time you got back to your CHU.”
“Jesus, that sounds horrible,” Tony said, making a face. “Must be kind of nice now, to be able to listen to it and know that you can stay inside, safe and warm and cozy.”
“That’s true,” Bucky said slowly. He hadn’t really thought about it that way before, but knowing that if the sound of the rain got to be too much he could go get on the couch under a blanket and know that someone was around to still take care of things actually made him feel better. “Thanks.”
It didn’t take long for them to fall into a sort of easy rhythm of living together; Tony still screwed up basic chores sometimes, like using the sponge for the dishes to scrub the bathroom or putting dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher when they were out of the little dishwasher pods, and there was that one time the vacuum was making a weird sound so Bucky woke up one morning to find it completely disassembled in their living room, but Tony was grateful that Bucky never blew up at him about any of it. In return, trying to make up for the fact that Bucky had pretty much given him a whole new life, Tony tried to find ways to make things easier on Bucky around the house. He repurposed a clamp from the garage to help Bucky open jars and mounted a shampoo dispenser in the bathroom when Bucky complained one night that he had accidentally dumped too much shampoo in his hair in the shower.
Mostly he puttered because he genuinely wanted to be helpful, but it didn't hurt that italso distracted him from the looming issue of his grad school application; the truth was, he’d lost all inspiration for the projects he’d been so excited about before. Ironic for him to do all of this, the fight and moving out and everything, only for nothing to come of it because he couldn’t figure out what the hell to do for his proposal.
Tony stared fruitlessly at his computer, fisting his hands in his hair with frustration. All of the ideas he’d had a month ago that seemed so rife with possibilities were just…blah. “Dammit,” Tony sighed. At the corner of his draft paper he drew a stick figure with sunglasses and then drew a big missile flying at him and flames all around.
Just then Bucky knocked and said through the door, “There are new episodes of that cop show you like, do you want to watch it with me?”
“Sure, just a second,” Tony called back and shut his laptop. He crammed the papers in his desk so he wouldn't have to look at them anymore and joined Bucky in the living room.
"I’m sorry, where you working?” Bucky asked as he came out, pushing the button on the microwave for popcorn.
“Only in theory,” Tony sighed as he grabbed two beers from the fridge. “Still having problems with my application.” He’d complained about his lack of inspiration for his proposal enough times that he didn’t bother going through it again.
Bucky made a sympathetic face and said, “That sucks. Maybe some time off will help.”
“Can't hurt, I guess,” Tony said. Bucky dumped the popcorn into a bowl and joined him on the couch as Tony hit play on the TV. They didn’t talk much during the episode but the silence was comfortable, a far cry from the stilted few times that they’d hung out when Tony had first moved in.
Glancing over halfway through the second episode, Tony realized that Bucky had fallen asleep leaning against the arm of the couch with his feet on the coffee table. Tony smiled and leaned over to tuck the blanket over Bucky and settled back against the couch. After the episode, the app automatically played another episode, this time from a different series. Too lazy and comfortable to get up and get the remote, Tony was idly watching MacGyver when an idea occurred to him. He stilled and turned the idea over in his head, examining it from all angles. “Holy shit,” he breathed. He carefully climbed off the couch so he wouldn’t wake up Bucky and tiptoed quickly to his room before the inspiration was gone. Sometime in the middle of the night he came out for something to drink, shaking out his cramping hand, and noticed that Bucky must have gone to bed. Finally, at the small hours of the morning, he put his pencil down and flipped through the pages and pages of schematics and diagrams and notes with satisfaction. Not only would the new arc reactor design turn the clean energy market on its head, but Howard hadn’t made any breakthroughs on it in decades so when Tony showed him up he was going to look like a real asshole. Bonus.
“Wakey, wakey,” Tony said, knocking on Bucky’s door. When he answered, looking adorably sleep-rumpled and kind of grumpy, his heart flipped and he knew he probably had a stupid look on his face, but at this point he was too proud of himself to care. “I made you an omelet,” he said, presenting the plate to Bucky. “Took me three hours, but I did it.”
“This looks amazing,” Bucky said sincerely. “Let me put on a shirt and I’ll be right out.”
“Oh, uh…” Tony had been so excited he hadn’t even noticed that Bucky was only wearing a pair of boxers and nothing else; it occurred to him that this was the first time he had ever seen Bucky shirtless, and damn. “Sure,” he said, jerking his eyes back up to Bucky’s face, hoping his voice didn’t sound squeaky. “I’ll just, um, be in the kitchen. There’s coffee, too,” he babbled as he backed away. “And OJ, and, uh…”
“Coffee sounds great,” Bucky said with a small smile. The smile told Tony that Bucky noticed that he was checking him out and that realization made his face burn. He made his escape and was tempted to stick his face in the freezer to try to cool it off, but instead he just sat down at the table and thought about car engines until all of the inappropriate reactions subsided.
“So what’s the occasion?” Bucky said as he came to sit down at the kitchen table. “You’re up early.”
“I am actually up late, I didn’t sleep. But I wanted to celebrate because I submitted my grad school application!” Tony said proudly, doing a little drumroll on the kitchen table.
“That’s amazing, Tony! Congratulations! So you finished your proposal and everything?” Bucky sounded so sincerely happy for him that Tony found himself blushing again.
"Yeah, I had a breakthrough last night while we were watching that movie, and then all of the ideas just wouldn’t stop coming.” Last night it had seemed like his hands couldn’t keep up with his brain; in a flash of inspiration, he had suddenly seen the arc reactor and everything that needed to be done to make it smaller and more efficient and all of its potential applications, and after that it felt like the proposal had written itself.
“That’s really impressive, Tony. I appreciate the omelet, but with news like that, I should be making breakfast for you,” Bucky teased, gently poking Tony in the arm with his fork before he took a bite of the omelet.
“Well, I was already up,” Tony said with a shrug, making a mental reminder to buy more eggs since he’d gone through half the carton trying to make this.
“Dinner, then," Bucky said around a mouthful of food. "What’s your favorite food?”
“Oh, uh…” Tony stalled as his brain went through food that was actually possible for a amateur chef to make; somehow he didn’t think Bucky would be up for seared swordfish or a white truffle risotto. “Spaghetti,” he said finally. Howard hated spaghetti so all of Tony’s memories of it came from eating it in the kitchen with Jarvis and Ana, and sometimes his mom snuck into the kitchen to eat it too if Howard was busy.
“Spaghetti it is, then,” Bucky said with a soft smile. He speared another bite of omelet. “So what’s the next step?”
“Financial aid, I guess,” Tony said glumly. The prospect seemed a little daunting; it was going to take some research just to figure out the first step.
“I don’t know how helpful I would be, but if you need anything, just ask.”
“I really appreciate it, but you’ve already done so much for me,” Tony said. “You gave me a place to stay, a job-”
“C’mon, Tony, you’ve earned all of that stuff,” Bucky said, waving off Tony’s words. “It’s not like you aren’t paying for the room or earning your keep down at the garage.”
“I know, but…” Tony didn’t know how to put into words the feeling that Bucky had opened up his entire life to Tony and welcomed him into it, giving him stability and a sense of purpose. Bucky had been patient with Tony’s myriad fuck-ups and encouraged him when he was down about his application and he was funny and he thought Tony was funny and- “Oh, shit,” he blurted, eyes widening.
“What?” Bucky asked curiously, scraping up the last of his omelet.
I’ve got a crush on you. “I forgot to return a call yesterday,” Tony said, which was true; his mom had called him last night and he hadn’t even heard the phone ring because he was so busy with his proposal. “I’ll go, uh, do that, and I’ll see you downstairs.”

I wanted to share with you all of the most used items for Otis at this age. He’s currently 23 months (OMG!!!!!!) but I started writing this at 22. But basically most of this stuff we have been using over the last year till now. Sharing a variety of things from toys, feeding, to home stuff. Hope you enjoy this break down!
INDOOR TOYS
Disney Pixar Cars Mini Racers Mack Transporter: Otis already had these mini cars and one day Blake came home with this truck. It stores the little cars and also makes for a big fun toy to push around.
IKEA 20 piece basic train set: My sister gave us some hand me down IKEA train set pieces and Otis LOVES to put these together himself. It’s been a great toy for independent play and we plan to get more for his birthday.
Magna-Tiles 32-Piece Clear Colors Set: These are epic! They were great for when Otis was closer to 1 because they were easier for him to grab and pick up. Obviously you need to monitor your play because of the magnets but this is something he has loved especially during quarantine. We have a metal coffee table so he uses it to stick the magnets too. Or the fridge. Or the garage door. Basically anything metal he will put them on.
LEGO DUPLO My First Number Train: For his first birthday he actually got this set and he has become OBSESSED with Duplo legos. It’s been a great toy for independent play and I love how creative he gets with them.
toy dyson vacuum: This was another first birthday toy that he still loves to this day. Every time I get out my adult sized dyson, he runs and grabs his and “helps” me clean the house.
Mega Bloks First Builders Classic Big Building Bag 80-Piece Set: This was another first birthday present that keeps on giving. I keep these with the Duplo legos and he plays with both. These are better for smaller kiddos and easier to put together closer to age 1.
Playskool Explore ‘N Grow Busy Gears: We bought this after watching him play with something similar at his Oma and Opa’s house. The gears move when you push the button so this is a good toy to keep them occupied.
Plan Toys Baby Walker: This was actually a first birthday gift from Oompa Toys and I am telling you he still loves it and he is almost 2. It’s pricey but its a 2-in-1 toy. Both a push car and you have all the blocks. Otis moves this from room to room and then plays with the blocks either inside or takes them out. He’s going to be using this for a while. He loves to build.
Tegu 24 Piece Set: These blocks are fun and different take on a magnets toy.
LEGO DUPLO Disney Frozen Toy Featuring Elsa and Olaf’s Tea Party: You know how obsessed Otis is with Frozen so we had to buy him Frozen Duplo lego set.
Magformers 30-pc. Rainbow Set: These magnets have also been a very popular quarantine toy for Otis. He uses them on our metal surfaces but also lines them up on the carpet. Again, we monitor closely because of the magnets but this is a MUST have toy.
Buckle Toys Buster Square: We call this toy, “Mr Buckles” HA! When we were actually going places, we would bring this in our diaper bag or in the car. I sometimes bring it on our walks so he can play with it.
Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Count & Rumble Piggy Bank: He has recently rediscovered this toy and it’s so cute.
Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablet, 8″ HD display: This has been a recent game changer. Since Otis is now into screen time, it’s been fun to let him play on his own kid friendly tablet. What I love is that he can literally click anything in kid mode and he’s all in approved kid content that we load on there. A fun feature of this tablet is you can also use it in adult mode if you want to tap into apps like netflix etc. This one also comes with a great warranty incase you kid chucks this down the stairs and it breaks. I also love this case with it.
OUTDOOR TOYS
Evenflo Versatile Playspace Indoor/Outdoor Gate: This gate has been incredible. We actually bought 2 so it can stretch across our garage and have our garage door open and use our garage as a playroom. We have also used it in the backyard as a barrier for some social distance hang out during quarantine. It’s awesome because it modular so you can always buy more pieces or make it as big as you need it.
HEDGBOBO Music Bubble Lawn Mower Electronic Bubble Blowing Mover: This was a gift from a friend and I am telling you Otis is obsessed with this thing. He walks down the sidewalk with this little lawn mower and love that the bubbles can be turned on or off. You can take the handle off so it’s easy to store.
Fisher-Price® Lil’ Snoopy: We use this toy every day. Since Otis always wants to walk Lola and that is not always very productive… we put a regular dog lease on this toy and let him “walk his puppy” down the street and it allows him to have his own responsibility and gives him something to do so we can also successfully walk Lola to do her business. Love this toy so much.
Step 2 Up & Down Indoor Outdoor Roller Coaster Toy w/ Car: We got this for Otis’ first birthday and now, he’s really enjoying this for independent play time. He pushed the car up, pushes himself down. Slides down on his stomach… you know. The normal ways of using it. HA! SUCH a great bigger gift idea. These are hard to come by in stock.
Mickey Mouse Glowing Bubble Wand: We actually bought our bubble wand at Disney On Ice but this one looks identical. It has both lights and bubbles for when the bubble inevitably run out. Lol. Anything Disney can go no wrong.
Veer Cruiser: I often get asked if this wagon is really worth the hype. My honest answer is that yes it’s VERY expensive but we have gotten incredible use out of it. It has very rugged wheels which allows us to easily bring to the park, on grass, and even in the sand. Yes it’s still hard to pull on sand but the rugged wheels make it easier. A plus is there are so many really unique attachment options. We recently got the additional storage bucket to add on. If you are looking for something splurge worthy, I 100% cosign this. Another thing that is great is you can add adapters to add a car seat. So if you are in a two kid family, that could come in handy. It folds down super flat too so we easily stow it in our trunk. We love it! Also the snack tray is EPIC.
Little Tikes Toy Sports T-Ball Set: This is a newer toy because obviously we love baseball in this house and this is a bigger boy toy. He has been having fun and it doesn’t take up that much storage space.
Little Tikes Cozy Coupe Kids Pretend Play Fun Grocery Store Shopping Cart: I bought this at the beginning of quarantine and it’s an epic toy for walking around the neighborhood. It’s nice to give Otis a task when we are walking to keep him focused and moving in the direction I want him too. Toddler problems am I right!??! It’s great because he can throw another toy or two inside and it’s big enough if he abandons it, I can easily just pull it with one hand.
Step2 Whisper Ride II Kids Blue Ride On Push Car: One of daily used toys. Each day we take a walk together. He loves to ride in it and we have used it since he was 1 and will get even more use after 2.
BEDTIME
Halo Sleep sack: We have tried many sleep sacks and this is still our favorite. We have ones in different materials for different seasons but since we have A/C we like to use the fleece one since it’s nice and cool in the house. We put it on him backwards which at least helps a little in terms of him not taking it off. It’s been the best one we have found. They are just hard to find in the larger sizes. He is in the biggest size right now.
Slumberkins Sloth Snuggler: This is Otis’ prized possession. He calls his sloth his “love love” and he sleeps with it everynight. We introduced this when he was an infant for car seat rides etc before he started sleeping with it. I can’t say enough good things because they wash in the washing machine so well and I let them air dry and they are good as new. My recommendation is to buy 3 of any lovey you want to get for your child. So if you lose one you aren’t screwed. HA! Also keep cycling them so you can wear them evenly. I did not do this. Learn from my mistakes
Playskool Sesame Street Cookie Monster 10” Mini Plush: Cookie Monster is one of his loves in bed with him. This one is nice because its small.
Jellycat Bashful Turtle Stuffed Animal, Small: Otis loves his little turtle. The jellycat toys are so soft and I got him the tiny size since it’s easier to carry around and snuggle.
Hatch Rest + Sound Machine: By far one of my must haves from the newborn phase till now. I love this thing so much I have 3 of them in my house. 1 in his room, 1 outside of his room in the hallway to drown out any noise in the house, and 1 in our bedroom on my night stand because I got so used to the sounds when Otis was in his bassinet in our room. This newer version is pricer than the older but what is EPIC about it is that is has some reserve battery in it. So for instance, if the power goes out, the sound machine will stay on. EPIC. I have convinced many people to buy this including my sister. I had forgotten it at her house and her sons borrowed it and loved it so much she bought them. It also has time to wake functionality which we have not used yet but hope to in the future.
EATING
Skiphop Zoo 11 oz. Insulated Food Jar: Love these insulated food jars when toting around lunch or dinner for Otis.
Summer Infant Pop ‘N Sit Portable Infant Booster Seat: This is a must have item! We have gotten so much use out of this portable high chair even just in our own house. We use it for outdoor picnics and the detachable tray makes it great to kind of contain them in one place when you don’t have your highchair etc. It’s easily washable and it also can be attached to another big chair to serve as highchair height at a table. I have a slightly different version but buy this if you like it it’s been sold out.
Skiphop Zoo 7.5 oz. Snack Cup: These snack cups are like gold in our house. I constantly have at least 2 filled with goodies for Otis and love that they have a cap that closes so things are leaking out everywhere.
Inglesina Fast Table Chair: This is our current fav high chair. I LOVED my large high chair from stokke but one day Otis started fighting us to sit in ANYTHING. We were able to eventually get him to sit in this clip on chair so now we have two. One on our kitchen island and one on our dining room table. The best thing is that while the instructions don’t recommend it being machine washable, I was reading a couple blogs of people that put theirs in the washing machine. I tried it and holy crap it looks like new after! I just let it hang and air dry. We also used to take this to restaurants when Otis was too young to sit in their highchairs as well as taken to hotels etc.
Inglesina Fast Table Dining Tray: You NEED to get this tray if you buy the chair. Keeps clean up easier so food doesn’t cake under the handles. It’s easy to loosen and clean under but this helps prevent that as well as being something we can easily remove when mealtime is over. Otis tends to want to rip his plate up when he is saying he is all done so its easy to just remove this tray and get it out of the way.
UNICOO- Bamboo Height Adjustable Kids Learning Stool: I always get asked about this kitchen stool and the white is sold out right now but here is the wood version. What I love about it is that it is pretty compact because we have a pretty small kitchen. It’s been epic for Otis to be at the counter and help prep meals, have a snack, help make my morning coffee etc. It also allows him to be a menace and mess with literally everything but I love this tower so much. No regrets!
OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup: We tried a bunch of sippy cups and this is the one we have used and loved when we transitioned him off the bottle to a sippy straw cup. It’s relatively easy to clean. But let’s be honest, any straw is annoying to clean. They do leak if there is milk in the straw but it’s the best option we have found so far.
Lollaland® Lollacup 10 oz. Sippy Cup: This is our #1 water cup. With the handles it’s easy for Otis to grab one handed when he is filthy eating dinner. Lollaland makes such great kids feeding stuff and we own quite a few of their products. This is by far my fav and most used water cup.
Bumkins Disney Silicone Grip Dish, Suction Plate: I love all the bumkins suction plates. They REALLY stick. You know we are Disney obsessed so this Mickey plate is in heavy rotation.
Bumkins Baby Fork and Spoon Set: These are the forks and spoons we are using for Otis right now. They are short enough to make it easy for him to eat.

toy dyson vacuum: This was another first birthday toy that he still loves to this day.

A Bear Returns to Brooklyn (Post 122) 12-30-15
It was a Christmas where I thought about keepsakes and their value quite a bit. I guess my understanding of keepsakes has formed that something is really a keepsake only when its personal value exceeds its monetary value by a factor of ten. For instance, the keepsake that reminds me most of my grandfather is a sales trophy that he won years ago selling Electrolux vacuum cleaners door-to-door in Boston. He never gave me the trophy, it was in my parents’ house and it was not displayed prominently … with pretty thorough justification. The statue is in the shape a gilded man like and Oscar with arms extended on high as if he is displaying a heavy weight champion belt, except he is holding a vacuum, one of the old-fashioned kinds that you pulled along behind you until eventually the plug pulled out of the wall.
Certainly the trophy is saleable; I have watched enough episodes of American Pickers to know that there is a market for oddball relics of the prosperity boom of the 50’s, but I won’t be packing it off to Dayton, Ohio or wherever Antiques Roadshow holds their next swap meet disguised as a soiree. I know I am not depriving Natalie of a year’s tuition to Notre Dame or Ohio State, by keeping the statue. It means more to me than the $20 that Mike Wolfe or Frank Fritz would offer due to its outstanding funkiness monetized. Nor will the statue ever probably bask in the soft glow of a recessed spotlight as the centerpiece of my mantle, but neither will it languish in a box in the attic. Each time I spy the Electrolux Oscar as he resides like a gargoyle on a bookcase above my desk, I will think of my grandfather fishing with me on his dock in Winter Harbor on Lake Winnipesauke in New Hampshire. In my mind I consider the statue to be a major award, more modestly displayed than the ill-fated leg lamp in A Christmas Story.
My few keepsakes and their importance to me made the bear in the basement a problem to my conscience like the buried pulmonary organ in Poe’s story The Telltale Heart. The keepsake bear has no place of suitable prominence in my home currently with nothing promising in the near future either. I don’t have a lot of places to display a large-sized stuffed animal that was probably very special to my wife, but about which I had no knowledge whatsoever. He isn’t a giant grizzly by any means. Overall he is about the size of Natalie’s American Girl doll. The most obvious and easiest cop-out solution would have been to add the bear to Natalie’s bounteous collection of stuffed critters. She offered to house him several times, but her room is already near bursting with curios. Natalie could outfit an entire battalion with various pellet filled frogs, over-stuffed ursine playthings and dolls or all sorts. All of them are named and cherished, but they are legion. This bear had been particularly loved by Pam and he didn’t seem to deserve second-teamer status, like Kobe Bryant as an eighth man.
The bear had all the signs of being special to a kid, despite the fact that Pam never told me his name or relayed anything about his origin and history. The bear had a tag that identified him as a Knickerbocker product. That the tag was still affixed was truly wondrous because the bear was well worn. His pelt was looking pretty spotty; he would have been a good candidate for a fur club purveying whatever treatment the Donald or Joe Biden have procured for their cranial rugs. On the whole, though, that wasn’t the big problem. The bear looked to have suffered what they termed in the navy as a sucking chest wound. His back left side rib cage had been kind of blasted to shreds by shotgun so that the best emergency treatment option would have been wrapping him in Saran-wrap or a plastic bag to continue minimal lung function until a corpsman or a priest arrives to provide a better solution.
Anyway, no sheet of cellophane was necessary for the bear, as he had been sewn back together by a seamstress of rudimentary skill that could only have been a ten year old Pam. A dog must have gotten a hold of Pam’s treasured toy at one time or another, which is exactly the dilemma I worried about if we brought him up into the house. The bear was safe from dog attack in his plastic container residence in the basement utility room, but he might as well have been in a stuffed animal morgue. I do keep some keepsakes for the kids there that I don’t feel are necessary to display continuously: Wonder Woman lunch boxes, school memorabilia, souvenirs from long ago trips and old clothes that were once favorites. The bear, on the other hand, had been a first teamer of some sort. Each of my children has had a special stuffed animal, but never have I seen one as worn out as this bear. There had been a lot of love poured into this particular keepsake, by a very special person to all of us.
Pamela bear is the only keepsake that I would put in a higher class. She is Natalie’s bear, but only by inheritance. With Pam home under hospice care at her last Valentine’s Day, I bought her a pink bear that smelled like the chocolate that she loved but could no longer eat. Short of items to give to a six-year-old girl at the passing of her mother two days later, I gave Natalie the pink bear that had sat in bed with her mother as she slept her last few hours away before leaving us for a better place. Pamela bear has been Natalie’ constant bed companion ever since and it shows. The bear in the basement had been loved on the same level.
In the weeks after Pam’s death, I sent a few things to her sisters that I thought they might have wanted. A carving of her name and a Garfield doll that all of our children had tried to steal from Pam at one time or another. Pam was an eldest child and considered here stuff to be her stuff, so I always imagined that her sisters probably had an eye out for Garfield as well. I imagine that the little stuffed animal sits somewhere special in Pam’s sister Annette’s house where it catches her eye occasionally and reminds Annette of her sister Pam at the age when they grew up together. For so much of their adults lives the sisters were separated by miles and commitments that didn’t exist in their little four bedroom house in Brooklyn, Maryland where they had just been close family, not far-flung siblings.
I guess that connection through time was what finally convinced me that the bear should travel back to Maryland to Pam’s other sister Stephanie. So I packed him up last Saturday along with Natalie’s, Stephen’s and my overnight bags for the six hour pilgrimage back to Kramme Avenue near the Annapolis snack bar where I first met Pam and began our life together. It seemed the right decision: either store the bear, risk the bear to Natalie and her doggies or return the bear to someone who would recognize him immediately.
As expected, Stephanie provided the name for the bear and stories about how an elder aunt had tried to separate Pam from her bear and blanket as officious adults sometimes do. Stephanie let me see her imitation of the scowling freeze stare that Pam used on any of her siblings that attempted to touch the bear, blanket, Garfield doll or any other possession of their eldest sister.
It is a pretty universal visage that I am sure my older brother used on me once upon a time. It interested me greatly that the bear’s name was the same one that my oldest boy called his own favorite bear that remains in its own plastic container in the utility room of my basement. I guess I will now consider the remaining animal who Walt Disney like awaits rediscovery to be Bear Bear Junior going forward. As for Bear Bear Sr., in my estimation, the decision to repatriate Pam’s bear to Maryland was the right one. I think Stephanie will cherish the keepsake because she has few reminders of Pam.
This ends my discussion of the Christmas of the Keepsakes. Some would chide me for even bringing up all this materialistic stuff in a column about Christian family life, but I don’t really see it that way. Although we are cautioned against collecting material possessions, I think that refers to more worldly items. In the Catholic faith images, relics and sacramentals are very important not because of their earthly value but because they draw our soul towards what they are spiritually connected to. Stephanie will not worship Mr. Bear Bear Sr, anymore than I worship my Electrolux trophy, and neither of us are likely to worship our family members that have the Pilgrim Church to assume their places in the Church Triumphant. It is helpful for us to think of them still because we all remain parts of the Body of Christ together. By keeping the trophy where I can see it, I maintain a stronger bond to my grandfather than I would otherwise hold. My pictures of Jesus and Mary work likewise.
