Basically a review of OP episode 503 ig

Currently rewatching post-war arc (in the dub so I don't have any screenshots for u guys sry) and theres a few things id like to point out.

During a conversation Dadan once had with Garp, they were talking about Roger. Garp said that even if they were facing powerful enemies, he would never run away because he wouldnt dare leaving his comrads behind; it wasnt an option for him. Obviously we see this in Ace. But ALSO, isnt this what he did with Katakuri? It was a little different cuz of the setting mostly, but he separated himself from his crew to fight off katakuri, and lied to them about being okay so they didn't worry (he was already getting his ass kicked by then, so he just made that stupid smile and told them not to worry (or smth like that, I can remember the exact line) (that smile was so gross and fake cuz he fucking sucks at lying). Also he said roger destroyed a buncha soldiers cuz they mouthed off his men. That's what Ace tried to do but instead he died. :(

"The pain he went through just made him hold on tighter to the ones he loved" -Garp, about Roger. "Despite his flaws and his bad reputation, his crew still trusted him completely." -also Garp, about Roger. These both sound a lot like Luffy AND Ace.

When Dogra got home and told everyone about Sabo's ship being shit down and him dying (which we all know didnt happen, thank fuck), (by the way the absolutely lost looks on Ace's and Luffy's faces with the sudden silence hurt like a bitch), Luffy started crying and said "WE SHOULDNT'A LET HIM GO, IT'S ALL OUR FAULT". Which fucking says something about him (thinking of episodes 913-915 when he goes fucking berserk, but before that he learns that Kaido probably killed Tama and he says "I should've escorted them..!" (*ugly cries*)). Ace also reacted pretty similarly-- "Sabo...why didn't we go back into town and bring him back here?! We're so stupid!" And he gets mad and asks where he could find the bastard that killed him (obviously not getting a good answer since it was a fucking celestial dragon ugh). That is what Luffy does, in present time. He results to anger first, not sadness. Not sure when he learned to do that but I'm 99 percent sure it was from Ace. Also the blaming himself thing? High chance thats ALSO from Ace. Who else would teach him that self hating behaviour?!

Dadan pins Ace down to stop him from going after the Celestial Dragon to calm him down, telling him he cant do anything, he's not big or strong enough to do anything and he'll be killed as soon as he tries anything, especially since it was the whole country -the whole WORLD- that killed Sabo. He can't do anything. And then they tied him to a tree outside to let him cool off. Oh yeah then he also told luffy to stop crying like a little girl or else he'll- (and he didn't finish the sentence). ...Ok maybe thats why luffy started being more angry than sad.

This is where things get a little more :( . Ace reads the letter Sabo sent them before he died. As he reads, he walks to the end of the forest, to a cliff overlooking the ocean. And starts fucking bawling (btw the voice actor who had Ace's childhood part did not do a very good job, no where near as in character and real as Coleen Clickenberg did with all of Luffy's crying scenes. She was spot on.) ...do you see where im going with that? He isolated himself before letting himself feel sad. It was all rage and then calm beforehand. Y-you see where im going with that. Dont make me say it.

"How's Luffy doing, is he any better?" "Well...he hasnt been eating much, but he still eats twice as much as we do". Oh look, That's what happened after Ace died too. There's a behavioral pattern that hasnt gone away. Not sure why it wouldve tho.

Luffy is mopeing, lying on the ground in a similar setting ace was at when he cried. Hes thinking about some of the things Sabo said, like how theyre gonna sail the seas together, and he clenches his hands into tight, shaking fists. After Ace shows up and hits him, and talking abt some other stuff I don't feel like relaying, Luffy tightens his grip on the straw hat and tells ace, whimpering, he wants to get stronger (and stronger, and stronger, and stronger and stronger and....) And he wants to be the strongest in the world. "And then, I'll protect everyone. I won't lose anyone I care about". He gets stronger mainly to protect the people he loves. And then he asks ace to promise he won't die. To which he hits Luffy again and tells him he should be more worried about himself dying first. And then the famous line that hurts like a bitch- "I'm NEVER going to DIE!" And then this hopeful music comes on (fucking damnit funimation, u gotta do this? Really??) Also he says he wont die as long as he has a wussy little brother to protect. ...FUCK. Ok, the fist clenching is a thing he does all the fucking time, usually when he gets mad. This was different because he wasnt mad, he was sad. He clenched his fist because thinking about it hurt. Which, huh, sounds a lot like his whole episode after waking up from his 2 week coma on the polar tang. To try and stop the mental pain of those horrendous memories, he resulted to physically pain. He hurt himself. So, He clenches his fists in times like these to fight off the mental pain and the urge to cause himself physical pain. Guys, our boy is bad at emotions, help him. ....ok this paragraph is longer than I anticipated so ill dumb down the rest of it ig. Next part, him asking ace to promise he wont die. The music, the body language, the over change in mood- this comforts him. He stopped hiding his face and silently sobbing after ace said this. OH YEAH! didn't he tell jinbe not to die when they parted ways in Totto Land? And then, hes missing still in Wano and we see Luffy is worried....but convinced Jinbe will show up. Again, this comforts him. Hes nervous cuz someone KOFF KOFF ACE broke that promise once. But jinbe is his crew mate so he trusts him, thank god.

"-But whoever did it, they must be opposed to freedom." The whole freedom thing? That runs through Luffy's blood and spirit.His brothers fought for it, his dad is the man who strives to give everyone freedom basically, and Luffy himself has seen enough of the OPPOSITE of freedom to be so, so much more than just against it. Hence why he of course was so eager to free the slaves in Sabaody, the kids in punk hazard, the toys in dressrosa, the country of Wano from Kaido's tyrany. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree huh.

I dont think Luffy would remember his promise with Shanks if it werent for his brothers putting feul to his dream. It was a stupid bet at first; he just wanted to beat Shanks, right then. But after meeting Sabo and Ace, he found the opposite of freedom and human rights. And then he wanted, REALLY wanted, to become the free-est man in the world; the pirate king.

Last one i promise ok? This one is less connected to whats going on in the episode at this point, but something I noticed (its so obvious everyone has seen this ok) was when luffy cries, his posture is always open. He doesn't curl in on himself like many people would do (I know I would, lol). He doesnt hug himself, protect himself. He's just, opened up to whoever is watching, literally. This has a little more to do with something I haven't talked about much in this post yet; his self-destruction issues. I said he tried to hurt himself when he felt mental pain, which is definitely similar. But he cries and doesnt try to protect or comfort himself, like he doesn't have that programmed into his mind. Reminder that he only wants to live because of his dream, and if he doesnt have his dream, he wants to die. (Whoa.). Ok, so no self preservation mechanism at all rlly. Hes basically ride or die. So, when things hurt so much that he cries, he has no hope left. He just kinda...dies inside. So this was mildly different after sabo died. Yes we saw him just standing there, sobbing. But the next day he's still crying, and instead he's laying on the ground. I saw that and the voice in the back of my head told me he wanted to be a part of that lifeless dirt beneath him. Then, Ace walked over. And his words made him feel the hope that I told you about earlier, and he sat up into a sitting position. And HUGGED HIS LEGS TO HIS CHEST. There's some self preservation! Some hope! Some will to exist, to live! Something we saw none of as he sat in front of his brothers corpse, shutting down. He sat there, open to his enemies, incapable of protecting himself. Practically anyone couldve killed him right then and there. I think he mightve liked that, at that moment. Like thank god he has that stupidly good luck cuz if he didn't I swear someone couldve thrown and axe or FUCKING ANYTHING AT THAT MOMENT and hed be dead becuase he never physically or mentally prepared himself. On purpose.

Our poor boy needs some fucking attention and therapists. (Insert my rant post about how jinbe is on the crew primarily for anger management and therapy, not just being a helmsman.) Ugh, smh ugly cries

Aaaaand thats about the end of the episode. Theres so many little tics and peesonality traits that you notive thru this episode, and I only noticed them cuz im rewatching this part of the show for like the third time. I don't react as much as the first time of course but some things are definitely sadder after knowing what's going on and what will happen later on.

Moral of the story (post)? I think luffy is almost equally as alike -if not, more similar to roger as ace is. Also, high key genuinely think Luffy met like NO ONE but Garp before he met Shanks and his crew. What the fuck was his first like 5 years of being alive like? (He wantd to be a pirate cuz Garp didnt want that. Rebellious baby asshole. And then shanks made things worse, in a good way for luffy. And then ace and sabo made that worse thing worse for a good reason. Luffy lives...for those influences. And that is fucking it. Why.

Of Course Dr. Mario Has A Storyline, What Kind Of A Dumb Question Is That?

Yes, it’s true. It’s even in the instruction manual! Though the latest video from Gaijillionaire details the storyline in the manga adaptation of Dr Mario, is something that was dreamt up by the comickers at Bonbon.

I’m not sure what I like more: how it somewhat connects to Super Mario Land (well its manga adaptation at least) or the explanation as to why the pills fall so slowly in-game. That and all the bits & pieces that would appear in Mario titles many years down the road; I do believe it is plausible that Miyamoto may have gotten some ideas from the manga.

On a semi-related note, a couple of mini storybooks based upon early Famicom titles popped up on Yahoo Auctions. They’re no longer active, but thankfully uwagoto was able to save the pics (here and here)…

I really hope, as one of the cover implies, Donkey Kong Jr and one of the fish from Balloon Fight actually teams up against the Balloon Fighter and Bubbles from Clu Clu Land.

this chapter was kinda fun to write, one because i don’t remember the earlier days of the smuggler story, from taris-voss (literally all of it), so i’m playing an alt character and reading the wikias. i also am very sorry if i don’t characterize them right, but ig i’ll do as i please. risha lovers i apologize.

oh, and corso was the first love interest that i can remember most of the details of. i played through the ia story first, but never paid attention because i was in such awe of the story. if any details are missing, i apologize.

“We’re getting married!”

Dead silence. Ghenkl hadn’t expected the crew to be so quiet, such a momentous occasion was upon them, and all she could hear was coughing.

Actually it sounded more like choking. Turning to her right, Risha was coughing raggedly, some sort of liquid dripping out of her nose and mouth as Bowdarr pat her on the back. “Are you serious?” Risha asked, choking through her coughs.

“Yeah, why?” Ghenkl asked, turning the ring back and forth on her hand. She had been wondering for a while where the stack of credits had gone, halfway to accusing one of her crew of stealing from the account. Corso, had been the one to take his promised half, and some of hers, to purchase what she believed to be the most beautiful ring in the galaxy, even if Corso kept profusely telling her it was nothing, the cheapest one he could get custom made.

“So, you stole from me to get this?” Were her first words after pulling away from him, still glowing from his accepted proposal. He scratched the back of his neck, not meeting her gaze. “You did! I was wondering where all of those credits went!”

“Well, you’re not too mad, are ya captain? It was for a good cause.” He said, giving her a smile that she was beginning to realize he used whenever he was trying to get out of being yelled at for something stupid-but-chivalrous.

And if neither of them died for a while, she’d be seeing that stupid face for a long time. It was like trying to tell a puppy no, it was impossible to be angry for too long.

“You’d better be glad I like shiny things, Riggs.” she said, giving him a hug as she buried her face into his chest.

“I’m not sure if you’re talking to yourself or not, Captain.”

“What? Why?” Ghenkl asked, confused.

“If you’re marrying me, then won’t that be your last name?”

Ghenkl absolutely despised word problems. Which lead to a debate about who’s name who was giving who. Eventually it led them to her quarters, him tickling her down. A captain of a starship and a crew, but you could reduce her to gasps and giggles just by tickling a few specific spots.

She loved him.

Captain Ghenkl Riggs, she liked that name.

Risha seemed to mellow out once she got the rest of whatever liquid she’d inhaled out of her lungs, taking a seat at the table. “Wait, you’re not kidding?”

“No?” Ghenkl asked as Corso put as arm around her waist as her smile returned. “I am getting married.”

“I…uh, congrats?” Risha asked, wiping her mouth, with her eyebrows scrunched together in what seemed like confusion. It seemed as if she couldn’t put her thoughts into words again. That or she was upset, these days Ghenkl could never tell.

“I think what she means is that we do not believe you are the ‘settle down’ type.” Akaavi filled in. Ghenkl nearly jumped out of her skin, forgetting Akaavi rarely if ever took a seat near the intercom on the table, choosing to rest in the shadows. The red zabrak stood behind them, leaning against a wall. “It’s most likely why she exhaled sharply, and then shot whatever she was drinking out of her nose.”

Ghenkl laughed, Corso stifling one as it seemed Bowdaar had a similar reaction, Risha’s face turning red. “I should’ve got that holorecorded!” Ghenkl said. “I thought you had just coughed something up!”

“Then let’s be glad you didn’t get it recorded, little one. You might’ve had a similar reaction.” Bowdaar said. “Then we’d have our own holo to laugh at.”

“Well, if we’re all done laughing at my expense,” Risha said, glaring at those in the room, “We have a wedding to celebrate. Do you have any plans, captain?”

“Nope!”

“What the captain means is that we don’t have any concrete plans just yet.” Corso said afterwards. “In her words, she said-”

“We’re gonna plan it as a family!” Ghenkl had thought about it, and it had been a few years since her other companions had joined them, and they were nearly family, sharing such a small ship and protecting one another. She didn’t remember much of her family other than the crying face of her ten year old brother when she had turned sixteen, the face of young girl she’d taken in as a young adult running into the flames and Corso had no living family left.

This was all they had.

“A family? Are you having a child that quickly?” Akaavi asked as she came into view to stand next to Risha’s chair, cocking an eyebrow in question. “It doesn’t seem like a healthy environment to raise a child.”

“No, no. I don’t plan to have kids for a long time.” Ghenkl said, shifting a bit before she continued. “You guys are my family, some of you have been here since the beginning, and some of you have arrived more recently, but since I don’t have any family to fall back on…I see you all as my family. It’d be wrong not to include you in the preparations.”

“Trying to get us to shed a few tears, Captain?” Risha asked, smirking as she leaned back in her chair before flailing in an almost comical manner, Akaavi helping her right herself.

“Maybe during the vows, but not really, Risha.” She smiled at her friend’s acceptance, “You can call me by my first name, it’s not like it’s offlimits to anyone.”

“Then we shall call you that, Ghenkl. I will assist with any preparations you may need me for.” Bowdaar grunted. “What an exciting event.”

She was sore. Very sore. Everything hurt, and this was the last time Ghenkl volunteered herself to help out with medical supply delivery with the Republic. She had barely been able to scratch out her name on the datapad afterwards, and Corso had nearly dragged her back to the ship. Not unwelcoming of course, carrying her in his arms like she was dying or something of the sort, but she felt like a literal ragdoll.

Not the way she wanted to kickoff the unofficial 'Countdown’ to her and Corso’s wedding, but she’d have to make do.

And her arms are screaming at her as she tries to get the shirt off. She’s halfway stuck in her own undershirt before she hears the door slide open. An embarassing sight to anyone, the poor Zabrak woman stuck in a white undershirt, arms hanging out of the holes at an awkward angle, sweaty and sticky in just about every place.

“Gah! Whoever’s there just let me suffer in peace!” Waving her arms in a fashion she hoped made her seem like she was offering peace. Someone stifled a laugh, as she could hear them padding across her quarters. Backing up, she nearly tripped over her own feet before a pair of strong hands steadied her, and helped her pull the shirt over her head.

At least she was free from her sweat-streaked coffin.

Corso stood there, shirt in hand and one hand covering his mouth, face turning red.

Y'know, at least it hadn’t been someone else.

“You gonna be okay, C-Captain?” He asked, handing her shirt back to her.

Captain.

Really.

She was getting deathly tired of that stupid honorific.

Well, she figured this would be an odd situation, Corso had just saved her from certain death through suffocation-by-undershirt, and now she was left in a pair of pants, combat boots, and a colbalt blue sports bra that showed off quite a bit of cleavage. “What?”

“Just…wondering where you were, Risha was looking for you. I’ll leave you be, captain.”

“What? Why?” She asked, yanking him back on the shirt he was wearing. “Corso, are you afraid of me?”

“No, of course not.” He responded, not meeting her gaze again.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure.”

“Seems to me you’re trying to get out of here as fast as you can, and I wanna know why.” Ghenkl crossed her arms like a child, stepping to lock the door behind him. He wasn’t leaving until she got a reason out of him, and while goosebumps danced along her exposed upper half, this was getting annoying. “Sit down.” She said, flicking her eyes to her bed, which was less immaculate a as a captain’s should’ve been and more…cluttered with weapons and such.

“Are you mad at me, cap'n?”

“I’m not mad, just confused.” She said, taking a seat next to him. Looking him directly in the eyes, she put a hand over his. “You act like we’re still just friends who met on Ord Mantell in unfortunate circumstances. Corso, for star’s sake, we’re engaged to married!”

“Y-yeah! I know that.”

“Then why do you call me captain all the time? Even Akaavi has switched to calling me by my surname, or my first name when she’s annoyed with me.” She supressed a smile as she thought about the red skinned Zabrak, and she did like to refer to her as the 'merc with a mouth’.

Good times.

But back to the point at hand.

“I’m not just your 'captain’, Corso. You made sure of that.”

“No, you’re not.” He was beginning to sound distressed, even upset as he fiddled with his dreds. “I know that.”

“Then say it.”

“Say what?”

“Say my name. I haven’t heard you say it since you proposed to me.” That was at least true, the name hadn’t crossed anyone’s lips until the proposal announcement, but she was still waiting on Corso. Originally she was going to let him do it first, as not to pressure him into doing anything he didn’t want to do, but this was surprisingly annoying.

She didn’t know why it bothered her so much.

“Ghenkl! The flames are getting too high!” The girl clutched to her, maybe nine, maybe eleven. Her eyes flush with tears, she inched away from the fire as her hug grew tighter. A twelve year old Kiveqil was on the other side, being pulled out by who she assumed to be their father, the person who’d dragged her unwilling brother to the Jedi Temple. She’d never forget the look of fear that crossed both children’s faces as she froze, the flames raising higher and higher before they were seperated. “Ghenkl, I’m scared!”

“Hey, it’s gonna be alright, I know it is.” In truth, she hadn’t known what to do in the moment, switching spots with the girl, so that Ghenkl’s black was flush with the wall of flames.

Corso’s hand cupped her cheek as she threw the memory from her immediate thoughts.

She hasn’t been called by her name by anyone she loves in the past ten years.

“I’ve been alone for years, Corso.”

“I know.” He says, a sad look filling his eyes. “I have too.”

“I don’t want to be alone anymore.” She said, her hand trailing up his arm to his hand, her palm flush against the back of his scarred hand. “I can’t be alone anymore.”

“I know.” He pauses, meeting her eyes. “Does it mean that much to you, your name? I…I assumed you didn’t like your past.”

“I don’t. At times, I really don’t. But…Corso the last people who called my name before all of this were my brother and a little girl who I truly considered my…almost my daughter.” His eyes widened in shock, maybe surprise. “My scars tell my story, but I don’t want to be living proof anymore. I want to be your wife, and that’s it for right now.”

“If it matters that much to you, I’ll always call you by your name, Ghenkl.” He presses his forehead to hers, minding her horns, before he ghosts a kiss over her lips. It’s barely there, a delicate touch, one that she’s begun to realize Corso’s known for.

And she loves it.

He almost pulls away before she pulls back, tilting her head to fit them together like two puzzle pieces, her lips on his as she straddles him, her little hair falling around her shoulders. He wants to hold back, she can feel it, before he hesitantly puts his hands on her waist as her arms go around his neck, both of them finally relaxing into each other. It’s nearly like they finally clicked into place, as she pulls his hairtie out, his dreds falling around his face. Her eyes open, taking his hands off of her waist, causing him to focus on her. Smiling devilishly, she slides them a bit further down her body, his face going red as he pulls them from her grasp.

“Ghenkl, you’re gonna have to stop doing that.” He says, dragging a hand down his face. “It’s bad enough you’re on my lap and you’ve got your breasts all pressed up on me.”

“Who says it’s bad? I have nothing against it.” She thinks for a moment, before allowing herself a teasingly slow roll of her hips over his lap, earning a groan as she pulls herself off of him. “Well, maybe I’ll wait until the honeymoon instead, farmboy.”

“You are such a handful.” He says as she picks off the buckles on her boots, sliding one off and then the other as Corso tries to realign himself. “Not to mention a tease.”

“What can I say? I like seeing you all flustered.” She begins the task of trying to pull her sports bra over her head as her shoulder joints scream in pain trying to get the tight thing off. “Be a darling and help me get this thing off?”

“I…uh..” He pauses, almost freezing. “Ghenkl-”

“Not saying you have to everyday for the rest of our lives, just help me get this devil’s embrace off.” Ghenkl did love these things, least she could fight and enjoy high speed speeder rides without having to worry about certain things going flying, but getting it off was another job in itself. “I’m hurting, you’re here, my husband, and I’ve seen you topless plenty of times before anyways.”

He hesitates again, before helping her pull the thing up and over her head. She sighs in relief, it has never felt better, and never will, to get a sports bra off her chest. Turning a head over her shoulder, she nearly smacked her forehead, Corso turned around with hands over his eyes. Of all the men she’d ever been with, Corso was the most shy. She didn’t blame him, if that’s how he was, then she’d leave herself accesible whenever he was ready or wanted her. “Corso, you can look, you know that. It’s gonna be a long couple of years for you if you don’t get used to a topless me.”

“Then so be it, I’ve got morals.” He said almost inaudibly, walking into the wall with a pained 'ow’ with his hands still over his eyes. Giggling, she figured she wouldn’t torture him anymore, and threw a black shirt on. Padding over to his slumped over form, she pulled a hand off his left eye.

“You can look now, Riggs.” She said, helping him up. He gave her a once over before cracking a smile. “Whatcha smiling about know, see somethin’ you like?”

“Other than you, Ghenkl, no. But…”

“But?”

“You have my shirt on backwards.”

i also like to explore the fact that your companions and love interest refer to you by a certain honorific. honestly i expect nothing else,, it’s a prewritten mmorpg but i like to explore how it affects their personal relationships.

also,, i read a lot of corso riggs fics before writing this originally n it seems the fandom is conflicted on how to depict him, as a virgin or as a casanova. seems like past me chose the former. *slaps forehead*
