hii!! your soft spot post is gorgeous!! if it's not too much trouble, could you share how you edited it? thank you in adavance?? <333
thank this is so sweet!! this is going to be really long, so i'll put it under the cut
resources: preset, gradient, clean and sharp action, letters and topaz clean
left is the unedited screenshot taken with srwe and right is after placing the gradient and setting the blending mode to color dodge and opacity to 7%
on the original layer i ran my personal action, then the clean and sharp action again, uniform monochromatic noise (not sure what percentage though) and two filters from the filter gallery i haven't tried before. it's been a while since my last edit, so i wanted to experiment more, especially with neon lights and colored highlights since i have very little experience with those, but i'll get to that later. i also fixed the glitch on talia's neck and some clipping on her forearm. using the liquify tool and the smile bar i gave eden and talia more pronounced smiles and otis a subtler one on a duplicated layer. then i erased the right sides of eden and talia's mouths to make it look more like a smirk
left is after the actions and filters and right is after i filled in the sims skin and eden's hair (erasing the clothes, eyes, teeth and jewelry) with a black brush on a new layer and set it to soft light 10%. the diffuse glow filter already lightened their skintones a bit and i wanted a base to stop it and the highlights i'll add on later from washing them out
now the fun part, shadows and highlights! i made a folder with two subfolders, one for shadows and one for highlights. it helps me keep it organized and for something i'll mention later on. i draw shadows with the basic soft brush in black, changing the size depending on how big the surface i'm shading is. then i use gaussian blur to soften the effect and erase the excess. the quick select tool leaves harsh lines, so i manually erase. usually i set the layer to soft light, but depending on the shadow sometimes it can be multiply or even normal. for this edit every shadow i mention will be soft light unless i specify otherwise. i try to keep shadows on separate layers to avoid accidentally blurring ones i'm already done with. usually i (try to) pay attention to the light source and add shadows and highlights depending on the angles, but since there are so many light sources in this one i just casually eyeballed it. besides the shadows on the sims themselves i also darkened the store window behind otis to bring more focus to his face with a black brush and layer set to normal and added shadows to the sides of the edit to create a subtle vignette effect. for the eyes i draw a thicker black line following the upper lash line, blur it, erase everything apart from the whites of the eye and set it to soft light. a subtle shadow on the upper eyelid crease also help the eyes pop
the process for highlights is almost the same as for shadows, i draw with a slightly smaller white brush, blur it, set blending mode to overlay (sometimes soft light, i'll specify when). i also tend to make the highlights softer than shadows and really focus on the layering. usually i'll draw a highlight, blur it, set to overlay, then on a new layer do the same thing with a smaller brush and less blur. for the eyes i focus on the middle of the eyelid, inner eye corner and just under the last line. for the iris i drew a highlight on the brightest part (a half circle on the bottom part), blur slightly and set to overlay with low opacity to make the colors stand out. for the catchlights i drew over them with a really small brush, used no or very little blur and duplicated the layer two or three times, merged them, set blending to normal and opacity to 90% and then erased the excess. if the catchlights aren't visible i add them anyways, the bigger they are the effect will be more cartoony, but i personally like that to keep with the style of my default eyes. here's the difference with the highlights added and a close up of eden's eye before and after both shadows and highlights
now the light sources. usually i take a big brush in a light beige color and click twice on the light source instead of drawing, blur heavily and set the layer to overlay, then on a new layer do the same with a smaller brush and less blur. repeat that for a more intense look or lower the opacity for a subtler one. i did that for the lamp between eden and talia. the colored pixels and harsh look was intentional since i was going for a grainy, cluttered vibe for this whole edit, but if you want to avoid that, don't use the filters from the beginning, make less duplicates of the light source highlights and avoid having a light source right behind a very dark color (talia's hair). here's a before and after for that light
now the neon lights and colored highlights were a lot of trial and error, but overall i'm pretty happy with the results. hopefully i'm feel more confident in them after more practice. the process is different than the one for the lamp, not just because of the colors, but because i also wanted to give them that sharp intense led glow. i'll use the sign next to otis as the example, but the process was almost exactly the same for the fake neon sign and light between talia and otis. first i started by drawing over the sign with a white brush staying inside the lines of the sign, not blurring it and setting it to overlay and 50% opacity. duplicated that layer, set it to normal and blur it. then i made a new layer, drew over the sign with an orange brush and made that layer a clipping mask, both set to normal and 100%. then i duplicated that second white layer and blurred it even more and set it to vivid light, made another orange clipping mask and set it to normal. repeated that but instead of vivid light i set the white layer to hard light. duplicate that last white layer and clipping mask and set the white layer to 60%. do one blurred white vivid light layer with a red clipping mask for the red circle above it. then i drew a highlight on the side of otis' head and shoulder the way i did all the sim highlights, duplicate it and add a clipping mask with the matching colors
the colored highlights are very similar, (white brush, blur, overlay, duplicate layer) i just add a blue clipping mask to the top white layer and if there are spots missing a blue hue that aren't edges (of an arm in this case) i use a blue brush and draw it in changing the mode to overlay. this latter way will show the color, but won't be brighter than the background, so i used it for the area where the arm casts a shadow on the shirt under it. here's a comparison of the version without any highlights, plain highlights and with the clipping masks
i added some bits here and there like the lights from the openings in the door, the blue light above the sign left of the door, shadows under talia's breasts since the shirt was pretty flat, made the little circles by otis' hand fake lights... now that all the shadows and highlights are done i duplicated the folder containing both subfolders, hid the layers that were too dark/bright and played with the opacity of the folder until i was satisfied with how it looked. i settled at 20%. here's the before and after all the shadows and highlights
now i picked the letters i needed from the pack i linked in the beginning and spelled out their names with them. i used invert on some of them (switching black to white, white to black) and added a lot of clipping masks with colors and splatter. i played around with a lot of different blending modes for the clipping masks (color burn, subtract, exclusion, darken, multiply, difference and normal). then i merged all the letters without the clipping masks, put them under the original letters, inverted them and moved them slightly to the lower left creating a sort of shadow. then i merged all the letters and clipping masks together, ran the clean and sharp action and added a lot of noise
and that's everything! hopefully this was helpful, i in no way consider myself an expert in editing, i just fuck around until i find something i like, but if there's any other question i can answer don't hesitate to ask. again, thank you so much for this ask and all the love i've gotten on this edit <33
#i wrote 90% of this and then my pc crashed and i didn't save it as a draft so i had to do it all over again 🙃#hope this wasn't too rambly and i didn't miss anything writing this the second time#ask#*mina.txt#tutorial

uuuugh i keep procrastinating cuz i wanna make new refs n' arts n' all for us all but art slow so fuggit placeholder pinned abt the system better pinned with comm details, other accs, etc later :3 will reopen for commissions once arty verifies me! as a whole we're legally deaf and disabled! we can all draw but have diff styles/preferences :3 body is 30 (eugh i don't like admitting that) so am adult BUT we don't wanna be involved in nsfw art so pls respect that⭐ We can't get a formal diagnosis due to various real life issues, so we're not going to claim any particular diagnosis, but we can't exactly ignore the symptoms and stay masked forever. We're going to stay out of syscourse as much as possible, of course. 🌙 each alter has an assigned emoji so ppl can tell us apart easier if needed, use em as our tags too (when we remember) note- using they/them for any of us fine too!⭐
(doesn't include alters that rarely or never front) ⭐star emoji = Blue! she/her pls~ guess i'm the honorary host cuz i front most. uhhh... nothing rly too fancy i can say abt myself, i'm p affectionate and love y2k art and hanging out, i try to be as nice as i can >w< my art's usually sketchbooky, with thin lines and soft colors/shading!
💠this blue gem/flower emoji is Azure! she/her, she's kinda new to the system. looks n' acts a lot like me but uh... more childish i guess? very silly, very 'cringe culture is dead'. loves to rp, say silly things, n' cling to people. hyperfixates on Dot Hack (RIP) her art looks like mspaint x3 🌙 (Writing for myself since I'm available.) The name's Lune, hence moon emoji, and I use she/her pronouns as well. Formerly "Starry" but people kept confusing me with Blue due to her star symbolism. Used to be the designated mask, I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore... Sometimes I re-mask out of habit so if something sounds like me but wasn't marked as an alter, it probably is me. I have a flat tone and chronic paranoid anxiety so uh... Let me know if I come across as rude, I usually don't mean to. I enjoy doing research and organizing information, so I'm often the one to fact-check things or find guides and how-to's for the system. My art's very bold and colorful, and friends describe it as 'angular'. Clashes with my personality, huh? 🗝️key emoji = Sylverwynd! he uses he/him! he's super laid back and chill, i've never seen him upset or anything, but he's rly long-winded talks... kinda poet-y? he loves reading and talking abt lore and myths so he'll pop in if ur talking abt something he likes or if he has trivia 2 share! fave genres r horror n' fantasy he's still experimenting w/ style but likes drawing rly soft
❌cross emoji= Laceburner! it/its or they/them pronouns! tbh i'm not used to it/its pronouns but Lace wanted em; it's very uh... emotionally empty i guess? aroace, agender, can't socialize or empathize v well. it usually fronts when the rest of us are tired or in pain cuz it just ignores all that. likes 2000's scenemo aesthetics though which is surprising but ye idk how to describe its style, but it's trying to mimic emo art n' likes bright colored lines with dark bg/colors 🗡️the dagger is Kal! he/him pronouns, he gets angry and stressed abt things really easy but he gets too hostile abt it so he tries to not front too much; need to find him a way to de-stress n' chill out... when he's not mad at smth he's a good sympathetic listener imo, still swears and talks all rough tho hasn't drawn much yet but does rly harsh lines and fast/messy sketches when he does (and gets riled up by mistakes =w=;)
❤️heart is Weiss! genderfluid, goes by any pronouns, usually uses whatever they like at the time x3 has a hard time fronting but tries to. flirty, loves dumb jokes, overly confident... (we worry they'd get us in trouble sometimes cuz the shit they want to say) loves demon and monster-related stuff! still experimental style but uses bold colors and thick rough lines a lot, may get suggestive (forbidden from outright nsfw, don't ask >:c) btw ur always welcome to direct asks @ someone specific >w< we just might take a while to respond

kamo mc [for @phen0l]
HMMMMM i have much to say about her 😭 i’ve looked at a lot of pics of different hairstyles, so while i’m not sure how often she did something with her hair, i think the waviness really sells it lol. dabbled in color a bit bc i wanted to get the gyaru vibes. maybe i’ll give her a diff hairstyle in the future! it was only after i finished shading the hair that i went “wait... would she have been blonder than this??” bc this is like a peach(?) color, but it seemed pretty common in the pictures i looked up so... could go either way lmao.
i truly have not colored anything like this in a long time bc it’s scary slkfjsdf i was like “oh i’ll just do flat colors it’ll be easy and will still have the vibes” and then my hands were like “bitch you THOUGHT” i thought also that if she has dyed hair and tattoos AND piercings then she would have also probs worn or at least tried colored contacts. i imagine her natural eye color would be dark brown, so i tried to make them lighter. i DID try out blue eyes but then it looked a bit strange dksljfds
i’m actually very bad with wavy hair because i get confused by it, but i hope this style for her is acceptable! she was very fun to draw and i tried to give her that classic oversized outfit that showed up in a lot of the pics i googled. i considered giving her a cigarette, but my initial vision of her was with a lollipop. it’s a bit more colorful and whimsical than a cigarette, so i hope that’s alright too!
none of her tattoos are shown here but i did want to show off her ear piercings! i wasn’t really sure what style of tattoo she would enjoy, but if u have any ideas 👀 i am looking👂 i am listening. in love with the idea that kamo looked at her and thought: “no thank u” but then months later he breaks both of their hearts. like sir. sir thats ur emotional support delinquent, what are you doin?
#for: phen0l#kamo mc#noer art#this is how i imagined she wouldve looked in hs btw!!!#i will admit: i cannot draw lips LMFAO#i spent like 15 mins alone debating on how to shade them/if i should shade them at all#so we have this mess LOL#i hope this isnt the only fully colored pic that will appear on this blog#but we'll see.....#also side note i had to change the size of the lollipop bc it was SO FUCKING BIG lmfao#i was like 'hold on........... smth aint right'

Humans are Space Orcs, “To learn.”
My brain wanted to write something in first person present tense today. I have no idea why, but I let it go wild. I hope you all like it :) A little bit different than my usual style :)
I just needed some time.
You ever tried putting yourself back together after war, it isn’t easy, or at least I don’t find it to be. I don’t know, call me a sissy, but I don’t actually like war., I don’t take pleasure from killing, but it is part of my job, a big part of it and if the universe continues the way it is, I am going to see war a lot more often.
I wish it didn’t affect me so much.
I wish I had a better way of handling it.
People think I’m a strong person, but they’re wrong. There are plenty of people who could take up my mantle and do a more badass job. They wouldn’t grow sick as the sight of carnage, and they wouldn’t hesitate to put the armor back on.
I’m not like that ….
I’m a coward.
If my friends knew…. Well I have no idea what they would think of me.
But that’s why I had to take some time. Since my first injury, I have never been totally alone. There was always someone there to check on me, there was always someone there to help me deal with my issues. I don’t think I ever figured out how to take care of myself, which is why I decided to take this trip, alone.
The others didn’t understand it…. well , one of them did but he still didn’t like it, but If I am being honest it will be good for them….. Especially her…. The last thing I want to do is make it so we can’t function alone.
I think its called…. Codependency or something.
I don’t know sounds like the sort of thing I’d get caught up in.
I suppose it's for all those reasons that I ended up here.
Looking out the window, I can see Anum suspended against the sky glassy in shades of blue purple and green like a lucky marble. It almost feels as if I can reach out and touch it.
The last time I saw this place, it was receding into the distance,.
I lost a lot here, my leg, and my mind for a short time.
Now it kind of makes me laugh to think that a piece of me was left behind to fertilize some of the plant matter. Of course, it looks a bit different now that the dark season has abated. I had only ever seen the place when it was covered in ash, but it's actually quite beautiful.
The pilot of the shuttle is pretty average, and I only feel like tightening my hands on the seatbelts just a little as we enter the atmosphere.
Fire rolls up around us as friction begins to heat up the outer hull.
Around me men and aliens alike rock in their seats.
Most of them are miners, come here to work on extracting the precious metals from below Anum’s surface.
Personally, I prefer asteroid mining, but statistics say that is more dangerous and expensive so of course corporations like it a lot less, and besides, all of this was sort of just a massive pissing contest with the GA forcing the Drev to pay for the damages caused during war. I don’t think they should, but who am I to give my opinion.
I’m just a soldier.
It doesn't take us long to leave the atmosphere, and it isn’t long before we are looking down at a massive open mining operation. The face of Anum has been scoured with a massive terraced hole overrun by machines and workers cutting into the stone. Volcanoes pipe smoke in the distance.
The scars of industry really are ugly sometimes.
I’ve seen pictures of anum during the bright season, without the machinery.
It's honestly very beautiful, but maybe I'm a bit biased. It’s the one part of home that Sunny misses, and I’ve always wanted to see it for myself. With all the times we’ve gone to earth, you think we'd have visited her home planet too, but I guess the cosmos have ust never taken us this way.
Red lights blink above the doors, and I unbuckle my harness pulling on my bag and gear with the rest of the miners, though I’m not here for the same reason they are. Boots clatter loudly on the ramp below our feet, and I head outside.
It smells clean and cool, though for a distant tang of sulfur.
You barely notice it though, less bad than visiting the hot springs at yellowstone, so your nose adjusts quickly.
The sky overhead is blue, just like on earth, though the ground beyond the launch pad is an amalgamation of rainbow color. I have to blink a few times to adjust my vision, pulling up the eyepatch to take a look from my mechanical eye and its UV filter.
“Holy shit.”
It's beautiful, the sheer amount of color is astonishing like the Lucky Charms leprechaun had some sort of horrific accident. T
he miners ignore me and continue on their way towards the docking pad.
I don’t plan on following.
I am not here for them. I drop the patch back over my eye, and adjust the bag over my shoulder striking it out into the bush, barely looking back. No one notices, or cares, and it isn’t long before the launch field and the mining operation disappears over the horizon. Anum’s circumference is just a little smaller than that of earth with the horizon eating up anything beyond that around three miles.
Gravity is somewhat lessened too, which makes it easier as I walk.
My boots are silent against the multicolored moss at my feet, this stuff teal in color. Little white flowers spring up from the surface like clover back home. A light gust of wind rolls past me causing the flowers to ripple. I lift my head closing my eyes and allowing the wind to carry with it distant smells.
This is the same wind that Sunny would have known growing up, the same feeling under her feet.
I decide to stop a couple miles out under the meager shade of a coiltree. I have never actually seen one before now, and I can see why it’s called a coiltree. Honestly it looks like something straight out of a Dr. Seus book striped up the trunk and with branches that curl into spirals. More little whit blossoms erupt from the trunk, and between those are little white berries.
I seem to recall those being edible.
Reaching up, I pluck one or two down from the branches and pop them into my mouth. Though the skin is white, the berries juice stains my hands purple. One of them is horrifically sour, but the other is pleasantly sweet, probably more ripe than the other, though I can’t yet tell the difference between them.
I sit there under the tree for a little while looking out across the lonely landscape. Something is moving on the distant horizon, though I can't exactly tell what they are, a herd of some sort of animal or another. They are very tall as far as I can tell, just a little shorter than the coiltree.
As a last moment decision, I kick off my boots, and strip my socks tying them to my bag before standing.
The moss is very soft under my feet erupting upwards between my toes like a shag carpet, but you know much less hideous.
My footsteps are even softer now, though the prosthetic clatters sometimes when metal hits stone.
Sweat runs down my back, sides, and front.
I have no idea where I am going, but I know they will see me soon enough.
They have patroll parties out here, and if they aren’t watching me already, then they will be soon enough.
I keep walking heading parallel to the volcanic chain.
For the most part, my hike is uneventful, except for that time that I stepped on something slimy and wriggly. I hate to admit it but I squealed like an idiot and nearly fell over, only made worse when I looked down and saw the giant pale maggot burrowing into the moss and underground.
I nearly gagged, and my skin crawled.
Sunny had mentioned those, though I forgot their names.
THey lived primarily off of decomposing plant and animal material, very common in areas where war had continued.
I didn’t like it, but it was probably one of those nasty suckers that ate my leg.
Ew…
Gross.
I contemplated putting my boots back on, but kept walking instead.
A group of unknown flying critters appear overhead. They have two sets of membranous wings, kind of like those of a bat, no tail though, just a long rail of fur like the streamer of a kite.
These ones are bright colors like pink and yellow.
Pretty cool.
Its nice to walk in the silence, though after a while my brain devolves into humming the star wars theme, and then singing stupid songs dancing around and hopping about from one foot to another as I badly sing the choruses to all the songs I know.
My eye of the tiger rendition probably left something to be desired, though I doubt anyone out here would know the difference.
Then comes the stupid dialogs with myself as I try to imagine what Krill Conn and Sunny would say about all this.
“Commander, I will have you know that you behavior is highly disquieting, I insist we get an MRI on your brain to make sure you have not developed a severe case of bilateral goop disease.”
“What kind of dumbass just goes wandering around with no idea where he’s going. The dumbass kind of dumbass.”
“Adam, I need you to understand that Anum is a dangerous place. I know you grew up on earth, but there are still things that can go wrong on Anum. Do you know how common surprise hot springs are. What if you fell in and died.”
Speaking of which, “Thanks imaginary Sunny, I totally forgot about that.”
Other than that, what can go wrong, it is a bright shiny day, the temperature is perfect, nothing someone like me can’t handle. Oh and is that a crunchy pink orb I see. I fucking love those, they taste so good.
I hop over the rocks, my feet warm on the moss, and reach down to pluck one of the spheres from it’s short stumpy stem.
And that's when the spear appears at my throat.
Shit.
I drop my hand back and look up to see a drev that is at least three feet taller than me, holding his massive spear orange eyes narrowed. Holy shit, I didn’t even hear her/him coming. Honestly I should have seen them coming long before anything else bright fuschia as they were.
“Lod tsa ee nin tsa daeen darish.” They jab the spear at my neck, and the obsidian lined head cuts through my sin like butter.
Oh shit, uh, my translator is not picking up shit. Guess these guys have a different accent than we’re used to. I rack my brains trying to remember how to speak what little I know, but it seems that it has all fled me when I needed it the most.
“Lod tsa ee nin tsa daeen darish!” I stumble backwards onto my butt and hands. Shit shit.
I hold up a hand.
“Cheeyat neahasan!” Shit I forgot to conjugate the verb. Damn I must look like an idiot yelling ‘to speak slow!’ at the top of my lungs
However, my botched attempt at speaking seems to work, and they pull back. “Tsa dzhal Cheeyish.”
Oh I understood that one, “Yid zhe cheeyi dzhal.” yes, yes I speak Drev, “neahasan.” Slolwy anyway.
They pull back. I don't know why, but I’m getting a female vibe off this one. I can't tell though, Drev voices all tend to be rather deep.
“Lod tsa ee nin tsa daeen darish” She says it slower this time, and all around her I watch as a small group of other Drev move to flank me from the sides. They are listening very intently.
I think I understand this time, the rough translation being who are you and what are you doing.
I want to speak with your leader, “Zhe zhegingi s tsak eeda cheeyat.” My voice is halting and I am butchering the pronunciation, but they seem to get my request.
She trusts the spear at me, “Tsaee!”
I hold up my hands, “Woah woah, easy easy…. I uh.” Shit what was the word to learn, “zhe….zhengingi hak tsa…. “ Damn it… I can’t remember, “um….. Rekazat nin dzhal….. Rekazazh.”
Oh wow, that sounds really intelligent. I wanted to learn from them but instead apparently I ‘want to know what they know.’ riveting conversationalist that I am.
She stares at me confused.
In frustration I point at her spear, “Zhe zhengingi…..zheengat?”
Uh this was going poorly. I clearly did not know as much of their language as I thought I did.
I want to know to fight.
Wow excellent work their commander that will convince them.
They look back and forth at each other, and fire off some quick shot dialogue that leaves my head spinning.
She turns to me and lowers her spear, “s jya Hajish.”
Come with us.
Great a sentence I understood.
It was in the next few hours that I was either going to live, or I was going to die horribly.
A pretty exciting time in my life.
And I followed.
Not like I had a choice at this point.

4x05 Chapter Sixty-Two: Witness for the Prosecution
Be forewarned: Sweater discourse.
(I merely include this moment because Betty is technically in the frame.)
But contemporary Betty begins the episode in a pink-and-white knit top with short sleeves. She’ll end the ep in a pink-and-white knit with short sleeves, too, but standby.
Betty wore this knit top to help Jughead torch the trailer-turned-Fizzle-Rocks-lab. We get a better glimpse this time around (glad to know it survived all that soot and ash and car sex.)
Love the little two button-detail on the rear-sleeves.
Ten Little Boy Scouts.
Well! I guess you gotta dress the part.
Off the top of my head, I can’t recall another instance of Betty in this very true-blue shade. It’s more of an Archie color. But the FBI has a brand, so.
(It’s delicate. But potent.)
We get such extreme and vivid close-ups during Betty’s serial-killer-savant moment that I felt compelled to include them. Love the eyeshadow.
She pairs the Junior FBI polo with a dark skirt (possibly high-waisted shorts, but I’m leaning skirt.)
The Legend of the River Witch. (In red.)
(Bret wears black crew socks, he’s the worst.)
Purple and green! Betty’s all over the range in this episode, fittingly. The ribbing and the scalloping of the pink collar are all motifs we’ve seen before. It reminds me of the scalloped and ribbed top she wore in 219.
Purple pants though, that’s new!
This is the first we’ve seen the bag, but it is a cousin of sorts to the one that appeared during the Stonewall tour in 402.
The existence of a Dr. Patel in the Riverdale universe leads us to conclude, logically, that somewhere out there in the greater Maple State there exists a Raj Patel. (But when was Riverdale ever logical?)
Betty’s the only girl in this Junior FBI Program (so Kevin’s odds of finding a gay guy here are decent-ish?), but she seems to be the only one with a kid size polo.
Girl zooms right outta there in her white tennies.
I love old yearbooks. I cannot tell if he is épée or foil, fencing squad pls come thru (I actually think it might be inconclusive given so much of the diff is in the weight of the weapon, no?)
FPJ I could get it. LOOK at that James Dean curl. That Jones fam furrowed brow. The out-from-under gaze.
(Also, these names.)
Betty’s subconscious! We haven’t really been here since 209? Lots of visual 209 connections in this episode... Betty spent 209 trying to hunt down and stop the Black Hood, and when she and Archie seemingly finally did...she felt like it wasn’t the end of the story (and she was right.)
Anyway—short overalls are a Betty classic at this point, and she’s paired them with a pink t-shirt and her pink low-tops.
405.
209.
I’m not going to engage with the fact that she’s wearing a bra/lette to bed (this is such a network TV thing)—but these two shirts are really similar. Their color difference might just be slightly too disparate to be down to a difference in color grading—but I do think we’ve all noticed a difference in the color and light in season 4 versus season 2. (Oh how I long for the clear tones of season 1, if only for the clarity of screen caps.)
I love this whole party scene, but doesn’t it feel like it might end up being significant beyond this episode?
Anyway, back to Betty the Serial Killer Whisperer.
It’s a good thing she didn’t burn them when Alice suggested it.
Yellow Keds.
Heart earrings 💙 Or triangles, idk.
Little Betty! At one point, pink-and-red seemed to be connected to Betty’s relationship with Archie, but here I’m honestly not drawing those kind of conclusions. This scene has a different purpose.
Little Betty’s wardrobe is consistent between Teenage Betty’s dream and her retelling of the Caramel Incident to Kevin. Of course, it’s simply easier to have a single wardrobe for these things, but Riverdale’s made the decision to mix it up before (albeit on higher budget episodes.)
Let’s interpret this costuming consistency as the narrative giving Betty the benefit of the doubt. She’s able to see some things clearly, even if she’s repressed some deeply upsetting shit her father forced her to do. I’m having Old Yeller flashbacks.
I don’t even know if I’m implying anything, I just really like the visual parallel and that I’m being forced to think about it.
The Haunting of Maple Manor.
👀
Again with the 209 echoes.
The Secret of the Old Windmill.
(only $1.95!)
“Lil Forsythe III”
It perhaps takes a special kind of zeal to take your half-brother’s confidence that he, too, possesses the serial killer genes and decide not that it means you’re gonna be just fine—but that instead, he’s sus.
But I dunno, gotta break some eggs in order to make an omelette, etc.
I’ll just repeat that genes are not destiny.
Stripes, ribbed knit, short sleeves, pinks and blues—all very Betty.
However, not sure we’ve ever seen Betty in a baseball cap before, even in previous investigation modes!
I think this might be her purple non-investigation jacket that we first saw in 213 (and most recently in 314.) It’s the sturdy jacket she wears when she finds herself in...less savory efforts, shall we say.
But! Another flash-forward!
Poor Archie.
“What’s happening?”
“Wait are we getting up?”
“Okay okay I’ll get up too.”
This sweater is, apparently, divisive. I’ve actually already talked about it a bit in response to an ask. It reminds me of something a Sweater Girl would wear, and I find it really interesting to consider Betty in that context. A sweater is ‘wholesome,’ but a Sweater Girl is seen as sexual—and therefore as something dangerous and corrupting. A patriarchal society fears nothing greater than a woman with some agency. FP storms into this classroom and declares Betty—this whole trio—to be under arrest for murdering Jughead.
This sweater is a bit like Archie’s dial television, or his rotary phone. It’s almost so anachronistic as to be noticeable.
To be brief—there’s something about this sweater and the context of this scene that gives this whole flash-forward a very strange vibe.
Everyone is so shifty-eyed, they have no poker-faces. FP barges in here with two goons behind him, shot Wes Anderson-style. There’s a comics vibe to it. Coen-esque.
But also I just think it’s something Betty would wear: it’s pink, it’s got a Peter Pan collar, it’s got some lace trim. It’s Betty Cooper in disguise as Betty Cooper, and it’s not the first time she’s tried that.
Summary: I think I’ve got a count of 9—that includes 3 separate instances of the Junior FBI uniform, Teenage Betty’s dream outfit, and the flash forward—but doesn’t include Little Betty. So let’s make it 10.
Is Betty a River Vixen??: Again, just on Jug’s wall
That backpack?: Yes, multiple appearances of Backpack 2.0.
The floggingink Memorial Peter Pan Collar Count: The Sweater!
Best outfit: u know wut I’m gonna be staunch and say The Sweater. (I also really love V’s floral crop top in that scene.)

What are blue-light-blocking glasses, and do they really work? Here's what experts say.
Blue light blocking glasses are on the rise. (Photo: Getty Images)
Do you ever get a headache after looking at a computer or phone screen for too long? According to the Vision Council, 59 percent of American adults report feeling symptoms of digital eye strain. Blue-light-blocking glasses are becoming increasingly popular, but do they really work — or are they just the latest fashion trend?
Want daily pop culture news delivered to your inbox? Sign up here for Yahoo’s newsletter.
As an editor, my days always involve looking at a computer screen for upwards of nine hours a day. I don’t usually wear glasses, but if they can reduce my eye strain and help prevent headaches, then sign me up. It doesn’t hurt that these blue-light-blocking glasses are fashionable too. I decided to put them to the test. But first, what is blue light anyway?
What is blue light?
Blue light is emitted from digital screens like computers and phones. Excessive blue light exposure is linked to eye strain, fatigue and headaches. (Photo: Getty Images)
“It’s emitted from your digital devices, artificial lighting and most prominently from the sun,” Amanda Rights, a doctor of optometry and Transitions brand ambassador, told Yahoo Lifestyle. “The sun is actually the largest source of harmful blue light — emitting more than 100 times the amount of harmful blue light from digital devices. But because we are indoors on our screens for an average of nine hours a day, our devices are negatively affecting us as well. Damage from harmful blue light is thought to be cumulative, similar to exposure to UV light, and may increase the risk of developing skin cancer.
“Excessive blue light exposure has been linked to eye strain, fatigue and headaches and, in the long term, can increase your risk of developing retinal damage,” she added.
“You’ve probably read that excessive exposure to blue light before bed, like working too late or scrolling through Instagram, can impact your ability to fall asleep because it suppresses melatonin — a hormone that helps regulate sleep.”
What are blue-light-blocking glasses?
Blue-light-blocking glasses are now available from brands like Warby Parker, Covry and Diff Eyewear. (Photo: Getty Images)
They are glasses designed with blue-light-blocking lenses that, just as the name implies, block damaging blue light. However, the percentage of blue light they block depends on the glasses. In general, they look and feel like ordinary optical glasses with clear lenses. They come in a variety of fashionable colors, styles and shapes — square, round, oval and cat-eye, and in tortoise, black, clear, red, blue and many more shades.

In the past, I’ve always associated blue-light glasses with those unsightly yellow-tinted versions, but now many brands have launched stylish options alongside their normal eyewear assortment. Direct-to-consumer brands like Warby Parker already offer the option to incorporate blue-light-blocking technology in their lenses (for an extra $50), whereas brands like Diff Eyewear, Quay and Covry offer specific blue-light-blocking glasses.
Do they really work?
Blue-light-blocking glasses are more popular than ever. (Photo: Getty Images)
I tested my own pairs of blue-light-blocking glasses from Covry and Diff Eyewear over a period of three months. At first, I didn’t notice any immediate differences. However, over time, I did. I would start my day wearing them or put them on toward the late afternoon as soon as I started to sense my eyes getting fatigued or a headache beginning to form. I have to be honest … they worked! I noticed a reduction in overall headaches and eye strain from staring at my computer screen all day.
But it’s hard for me to confirm 100 percent if it’s truly the glasses alone doing the “magic” — is it part placebo effect, or is it a combination of other elements of my day (e.g., staying hydrated, reducing caffeine intake, taking a break, etc.)? Overall, there’s no doubt blue-light-blocking glasses have become especially popular among our team; four or five editors sport them on the reg. Personally, I recommend everyone to try them. They’re not for everyone, but I do feel they helped reduce my headaches and they look super-chic too — a fashionable accessory with function. What’s better than that?

How much do they cost?
They range in price from $15 to upwards of $100. I noticed a considerable difference between the craftsmanship of an under-$20 pair versus a $65-plus pair, but it’s hard to tell the difference in how much blue light they each filter. According to Rights, “It is virtually impossible for the average consumer to spot the difference between a low- and high-quality pair of lenses. Like most retail experiences, you get what you pay for. Lower-end blue-light-blocking lenses may still be somewhat effective, though they are less durable and do not offer the same warranties as higher-end lenses. In contrast, going to an eye-care provider you trust will ensure you get a quality pair that will fit your lifestyle.”
What do the experts say?
Blue-light-blocking glasses can be worn while using digital screens like computers and cellphones. (Photo: Getty Images)
The short answer? There’s not enough research to confirm yes or no.
“Eyeglasses that claim to filter out blue light from digital devices are becoming popular, this is true,” Raj Maturi, MD, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Yahoo Lifestyle. “Because there is currently no evidence that blue light or screens are causing any irreversible, permanent damage, the academy does not recommend any special eyewear for computer use. But, of course, your eyes may feel dry and tired after sitting in front of a computer all day. This is from digital eyestrain.”
Maturi suggested alternative tactics to reduce eyestrain. “One example, use the 20/20/20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look into the distance about 20 feet away or leave your desk — for about 20 seconds, minimum. This ‘mini break’ reboots your vision by increasing your blink rate and moving your focal point away from your screen,” he said.
Similarly, Yasha Modi, an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone Health, told Yahoo Lifestyle that “there is no evidence that blocking blue light is beneficial to the health of the eye.
“There is also no evidence that blue light inflicts harm upon the eyes,” she continued. “However, this market has certainly expanded tremendously over the last few years … I do not encourage it, and I also do not discourage it given that the absence of evidence may simply represent a lack of clinical studies evaluating the effects of blue light on asthenopia [eye strain] or sleep-wake cycles. Given the amount of digital time we are logging, it is certainly reasonable to study this further.”
What do the reviews say?
Blue-light-blocking glasses are available for a wide range of age groups. (Photo: Getty Images)
Despite limited research on blue light and eye strain, these top-rated reviews attest to the glasses’ positive effects.
“The frames are affordable, the screen lenses are invaluable,” wrote one reviewer for Look Optic’s Abbey glasses ($78). “Since purchasing these a bit over a year ago, I don’t go an 8-hour day without them. If I temporarily misplace or forget them when I need to work in front of a computer screen, I almost instantly regret their absence. If you wear glasses, or spend a good portion of your day straining your irises like I used to, be kind to yourself and purchase a pair of these. When your eyes won’t feel strained at the end of a day, you will not regret your choice.”
Blue-light-blocking glasses might be a good option if you use a digital device before going to bed. (Photo: Getty Images)
“I’ve been using these blue light blocking glasses for a week now and I can already feel a huge difference in how tired and tense my eyes and face feel after a day at work,” wrote one reviewer for Diff Eyewear’s Gordan ($75). “I suffer from a lot of migraines and I stare at a computer A LOT at work and have been known to scroll through the ‘gram to wind down at night and these babies are honestly life changing. RUN DON’T WALK PEOPLE.”
Diff Eyewear Gordan (Photo: Diff Eyewear)
“For good sleep, and after seeing the price, I thought why not,” wrote one Amazon reviewer out of more than 1,100 for these best-selling Tijn glasses ($17). “Glad I did. I put them on as soon as it is dusk and wear throughout the evening until bed for the nights I am home, and I have experienced deeper sleep. The frames are on the cheaper side, but are very lightweight, and the large lenses are also very comfortable as well as cover the whole eye. I have used amber glasses before, but they were too dark and distracting. No problem with this pair — the very light amber is not distracting at all, and I forget I have them on. This has been the cheapest sleep aid I have ever tried. Is this just coincidence or placebo? Don’t know! But can report results.”

Midnight Cinderella Suitor’s Fashions
@aquisces-arts wanted to see what the suitors would look like in modern clothes, so I did my best conceptualizing what each would wear and why.
Let’s start with King Byron:
Byron dresses very monochromatically-- wearing different shades of black head to toe, and choosing gold accents that catch the light.
If you look at his hair, you can see that his wisps are very controlled. Even his cowlick is styled neatly. He would probably use a light pomade. The details on the jeans give texture without distraction, like his black casual shirt in the game.
The gold zipper on the knees also satisfies his love of gold hardware. If you notice, Byron does not wear jewelry aside from his earring, which he shares with Nico, so I think a planetary key chain would be a good choice for him, as it combines his star-gazing hobby with an outlet for an accessory.
Of course, a Rolex is a must, and I think he would always give himself a chaste spritz of cologne before stepping out of the door. This scent is unisex and has a dry-down that smells of vanilla, woods and leather.
I don’t think he would shy away from stylish shoes-- he may even be a subtle trend-setter. Because Byron can hold his liquor with the best of them, and because he doesn’t tend to let himself get too casual out in the open, I thought martini glass novelty socks would be a fun twist. It would be his own little secret. While it may not be that wild of a thing for the rest of us, considering Byron’s aloof personality, he may feel that it really is daring indeed.
Let’s keep going with another king, Robert:
Robert’s overcoat may be green, but he actually wears a lot of brown and beige. I feel like Robert would want to keep a low profile-- he’s not into drawing attention to himself.
Robert seems like he would be at home in comfortable clothes that are no-fuss, and extra-comfy. He may purposefully fly coach, but his fancy schmancy luggage would be designer first class-- the better to spot it on the carousel in the airport.
I think he would splurge on some plush headphones to pass the time on the plane, as he country-hops. Since he likes rather long necklaces, I kept the length, but changed the style, so that it wouldn’t compete with his favorite tee.
Because he likes to switch up his hair-do, flexible shaping spray is a must; and you just know he’s the type to carry a pocket comb. I also added some scrub because he just seems like the type to exfoliate at least once a week.
In his bag, he probably has a small journal for jotting down whatever corner bistros catch his fancy. Maybe he even has a small sketch pad and colored pencils, too, for when inspiration strikes.
As for footwear, he would need something super comfortable to carry him from museum to museum. The paint splatter on these are a callback to his profession.
Here’s what I think Nico would wear:
Because Nico’s hair is already dyed pink, I think he wouldn’t try to be too matchy with his clothing. One item that matches and that’s it, so I tied in the color of his locks with a button-down. The pants give him ease of movement, since he does all types of ninja stuff when you’re not looking. Plus it has lots of pocket space; you just know he’s got all types of short swords, poison darts, tea cups and whatever else. As one does.
As Nico is the only suitor who canonically conceal-carries, I thought having him carry a large pocket knife, with other accessories, would suit his tastes. Nico also tends to wear suspenders, both on his butler uniform and his casual clothes, so I gave him a pair here as well.
He seems, to me, to be the type who just sticks their hand in the closet and puts on whatever comes out, so I gave him items which are both black and brown to maximize his styling options for whatever he throws on that day.
He has a comfortable pair of shoes for quick escapes. Nico likes wearing scarves and neckties. Here, I’ve given him a bandana instead, which he can wear for fashion or use as a bandage. In keeping up with his big bro, they have the same headphones, only Nico’s are silver.
Here, Nico’s overall look reflects his character: completely unassuming badass.
I feel like Alyn would be a sneaker head:
He tends to make his shoes the focal point. He would be the type to have a whole closet section just for his shoes. He needs style and function-- something that would suit his tastes and also allow him to defend the princess even when off-duty. I feel like he would choose hard-toe boots and sneakers with a lot of cushioning.
Alyn keeps his shirts plain, almost always choosing raglan shirts and henleys in baby soft modal cotton. He goes with a basic feel-good pair of jeans in a deep color, every time.
He almost always chooses to wear red and navy together. Playing up the red in his eyes, and his auburn hair, you can find that color in everything from his tees, to his shoes, to his phone case.
As he is technically always on duty to guard the princess, Alyn, like Nico, would carry a small knife. Since he wears a necklace with almost every outfit as it is, I chose to give him a ring instead.
Alyn trains hard everyday as part of his job, so I feel like he would be concerned about smelling like it, too. This exfoliating soap smells of cedar wood and oak moss, and would keep him smelling so fresh and so clean.
Leo, like his twin, also accessorizes with red a lot:
I didn’t want to make them too matchy, though. Unlike Alyn, Leo tends to roll his sleeves up, so I gave him a tee, plus a flannel shirt that has tabs to hold up the sleeves. Leo calls more attention to himself, so he would like louder jeans than Alyn, who doesn’t go in for distressing.
Leo wears a lot of hardware every day, so I simplified it to just a bracelet and a necklace. The dog tag has a cross on it, just like Leo’s brooch. Because he is afraid to sleep, I imagine Leo drinks a lot of coffee to keep himself awake. Since he’s always encouraging the princess, I chose a coffee mug that encouraged him instead.
If you look at his sprites, Leo wears a lot of different materials, so to visualize that, I went with different textures. The stars on his sneakers are raised, the tee is textured jersey for softness, and the jeans have mock rips. To pull in the reds that he goes for, I thought he would like this phone case with a colorful snake.
Let’s do Giles:
I feel like Giles would be the type of person who would be chucking deuces on the way out of the office door, on a Friday, like “lmao, see you suckers!”
He would be as dressed down as possible. He wears so many hats, so I think he would be the most likely to sleep in. Rather than drinking coffee, he would probably have a hot chocolate overflowing with marshmallows to satisfy his sweet tooth.
I gave him a feather soft twin set with flocking so that he could cozy up with his kitty and get some shut eye. But, should the princess suggest it, Giles would throw on some smart duds and hang out at the local coffee shop, no matter how pooped he felt. Here, he’s drinking a mocha cookie crumble frappacino. His second one that evening. And don’t touch his vanilla scones! Okay, maybe a bite-- a small one.
Albert has no chill, so I think that this is as dressed down as you’ll ever see him:
The jeans are quilted and paneled for a biker inspired look, and they are flexible enough that he can take down any attackers without a wardrobe malfunction. I didn’t give him a knife, because I thought he would probably go for hand-to-hand combat.
If Albert was going to make a statement, I think he would do it with actual words. So you can not only feel his disdain, you can read it, too. He’d definitely have a snarky coffee mug and his phone case reflects his work ethic.
Because Albert canonically works until he drops, his version of casual clothes are simply whatever is under his uniform that day. He just takes his coat off, but it probably feels like heaven to him at the end of the day. It looks so heavy!
While Alyn and Nico would have shoes with traction so they can do knight stuff, Albert would choose oxfords because he is also the king’s adviser. He has to do two jobs at once, so he needs to be able to look the part as he transitions between supporting the crown and actually defending it.
I gave him a sturdy watch and kept his glasses mostly the same. Since this is modern Albert, I imagine that he would wear contacts for the most part and switch to glasses after hours.
Albert often wears ties, but I gave him a dog tag made with black sapphire stones instead.
Louis wears almost all blue, so I added in some brown accents to switch it up:
I gave him some dressy-casual oxfords to take him from the ball room to the chic café in town. He has a patterned scarf since, like Nico, he can’t go without something covering his neck. Instead of gloves, I thought he might like a thick cuff bracelet. Louis looks so delicate, so I wanted to choose different materials and textures.
I get the feeling that, no matter what, his sense of style is always semi-formal, but he tries to use at least one piece of clothing to make it a little casual. Even though he complains about the formalities of his social rank, he can’t quite bring himself to dress down like a townie, but he doesn’t feel like himself all dolled up in a tux either.
Louis’ hair is always on point-- and it looks so fluffy! But I bet if you touched it, it would be full of hair gunk to keep those tresses right where he wants them.
I wanted to give Sid something he could run to the store or hang out in:
I think Sid is very meticulous about his skincare and always buys the full product line. He would always have a pair of sunglasses in his pocket. His faux leather jacket has an attached hoodie, providing not only warmth-- but he can also use it to disguise himself.
I think this look will help him blend in, since he tends to go to more casual places to do his work. Similar to the hood, the sunglasses also give him an incognito look. Since Sid works all over in different countries, he would listen to music during his commute.
I didn’t pair Sid with any fragrance, because I thought that would make him stand out more-- which is bad for the type of work that he does. He doesn’t need people remembering specific details about him, and the sense of smell is the strongest.
I don’t know much about Rayvis, but I wanted to style him anyway. He’s another one that wears a lot of one color, so I pulled out his accent color here:
He looks like a rather stiff person at first, so I imagined him as someone who has a really cute secret weakness, like indulging in decadent desserts at the end of the day. Chocolate strawberry cheesecake seems like it would do the trick, and it fit with the colors of his formal clothes.
For texture and mixed materials, his wool coat has leather sleeves, the maroon sneakers have plush velvet and the cable knit cap provides interest.
I added a color-blocked button down and his black skinny jeans have distressing that you’d have to get up close and personal to see.
His sunglasses also have a subtle hint of color. I don’t know what it is with MidCin guys and scarves, but I couldn’t let Rayvis be chilly, so I added something for him to cover himself with.
