We Interrupt This Blog To Show You Something Awesome

Omori has a Lego Ideas set! This awesomeness is brought to you by designer FoodIsScarce.

Under the cut, I'll be showing more images, explaining my thoughts, and give clarifications on how Lego Ideas works for this set. But if you want to skip that, link is here.

Lego Ideas Neighbor's Room and White Space Set Breakdown

To start off, this set has a whopping three components, all of which stand alone.

First, we have Neighbor's room!

The colors are honestly so nice in this mock-up. Lego has a fairly limited palette, but being bright and poppy works really well here.

Compared to the in-game room, it's pretty compact, but that makes sense so it doesn't dominate your shelves. Everything important is there, to outstanding detail. The leaves may ride up higher above the doorframe, but it doesn't break the immersion for me. It all feels like a piece of really nice fanart or even concept art.

The yellow cat is the centerpiece and I am very impressed with it. It isn't as stretched out as the original, though that's affected by the build size, but the shape of the paws, ears and head are spot-on and the face sticker really sells it.

Also, building the set sideways so it's smooth? Genius in my books. Sure, the minifigs won't stick, but all the smooth edges in this make the set stand out from Lego's lineup without seeming like a jarring oddity. Kind of like Omori's world compared to a bunch of other RPGs, really, so it's fitting.

I guess if I have a nitpick it'd be that the leaves are entirely different in vibe due to being all fluffy and rounded instead of the big sharp shapes in the original, but I don't think that's even really a bad thing. Just part of the Lego-ifying process. Also I groan at how I know I will place the cat's eyes wrong. Stickers are the bane of my existence. For Yellow Cat though, I would in theory persist.

Next, we have Mari's picnic blanket!

Gotta be honest, this caught me off guard, even as someone who was keeping track of this project for a while, but this is AWESOME. Colors are nailed, the existing basket and fruit pieces translate so well, and I just want to place all my fave figs on it immediately. I do hope that Mari's square could be subbed out with something with studs to keep her in place, as nothing else seems to be (maybe the basket has a 1 by 2 piece keeping it locked?).

I think it's an excellent choice even if it doesn't appear in either main room because you can plonk it by any other set or the huge pile of loose bricks you haven't gotten around to sorting yet and boom. You've just made a new corner of Headspace!

Last but certainly not least, White Space!

The computer and tissue box I think were really well done. Smooth place also tickles my fancy. I'm not as sold by the suspended light bulb; some white walls that maybe has a claw on the side would have helped sell the room more to me, I think. But it's solid.

And then you get to my favorite part in the room:

What about the minifigs?

This set still has you covered!

In this current iteration it includes six minifigs for your main characters as well as the cat and snake seen in earlier pictures. Everyone except Hero and Mari seem to be those shorter models, which always used to annoy me as a kid cause I couldn't bend the legs, but gets a pass here because remembering that height difference is nice.

The hair is a hot point of contest with the comments and Reddit posts. I'll explain more below, but Lego Ideas has rules about custom molds for new figures, so these were the closest the creator could get. And hey, I think Hero is spot on!

All the outfits and faces are custom prints, which are far easier than custom molds, and I think were done really well! Basil's top might be a bit bright, but otherwise the colors are perfect, and so is all the printing.

I also saw that Mari, Basil and Aubrey all had one extra face, which is rad. Not sure yet if Hero and Kel do too or if it's just the girls (I should assume Omori is just slate-faced as ever).

Just one more note: I love how spoiler-free this set is. You know everything in the first few moments of play. Our community is really bad with spoilers, I admit, so this is perfect for a shelf.

How does Lego Ideas even work? Is my vote worth it?

Short answer: Heck yeah!

Long answer:

Lego Ideas is a really popular program with a lot of new builds all the time, and people put a lot of work into both the models and promoting them just for the off-chance of it becoming a product.

I compiled some questions you might have based on this set specifically, but there's plenty of info yourself if you want to learn more.

How does a set get selected?

Lego Ideas has three intake periods a year for products that get over 10k signatures between the last period and that date. Each intake only has a select few that actually get to that mark; the record number in 2021 according to Wikipedia is 57 in one 2021 intake. It sounds like a lot, but in the site's 10-year run it's had over 135,000 ideas shared, not including a bunch that would have been struck down prior to going live due to breaking rules.

Each set gets 60 days to meet that goal on first launch, then an additional 365 once 100 people have signed on. Getting 1,000 supporters gives you an extra 6 months on top of that, and 5,000 (the halfway mark) another 6 months.

Meeting that 10k mark is non-negotiable for that specific set to receive the expert review through Ideas, though successful ideas that are lower may spark inspiration from their own teams.

Do I need to pledge money?

No! Lego Ideas is not a Kickstarter or crowdfund campaign. Those ask for money as they need a way to produce and distribute the product. Lego handles this on the creator's behalf.

All you need is to make a free Lego account and click the support button. You don't even have to enable email notifications on signup.

Where will I find the set then if it's made?

Anywhere else you find Lego! Even toyshops I go to have a small shelf for Ideas sets. If none of your local retailers have it, it'd be on online storefronts worldwide.

But Omori is a licensed product!

So are most of Lego Ideas' concepts that make it to becoming a set! Out of the 65 sets announced and confirmed for production (or who have already had their run!) just 29 are not tied to an IP.

So Omocat will be involved?

Yes. If the idea gets far enough, Lego would reach out to Omocat and any other copyright holders of Omori to discuss how to proceed. They will also get a say in any tweaks, and likely make a licensing fee off of Lego.

However, due to the Ideas streamline, the set likely won't be sold on Omocat's storefront (and if they are, it'd be because Omocat got a few sets to sell from them; they'll never be exclusive to Omocat's store).

Will the creator get paid?

If it makes it, yes! Lego Ideas people get a 1% cut. It's not much, but for all the work it gets to 10k I think it's earned.

But Omori isn't for kids!

Guess what: Neither are most Ideas! They're packed in black boxes and kept near the architecture and more advanced Technic sets targeted towards adults. Each set also has an age recommendation based both on set difficulty and the IP.

Is Omori even appropriate for Lego as a brand?

Omori is on the list of approved IP for Lego Ideas. This may be reviewed, but I think it will remain appropriate both because the set does not portray any of the concerning content in the game and because of the nature.

Lego says they won't make sets for franchises built around graphic violence, alcohol, or sex. Omori lacks all that. I doubt it would be yanked down based on that.

I don't care about Omori. Why should I support this?

First, why did you make it down here?

And second, look. I get it even as a fan. But if we can get an Omori set even to the review stage, that opens up the door for people to try with all other kinds of indie franchises. Undertale, Oneshot, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, whatever you think of!

Lego Ideas is a portal to Lego working with IP that isn't just owned by a mega corporation, and I think that is awesome.

I signed! What else can I do?

Spread the word! Reblog this post, tell your friends about it, repost (with links and credit) to other social media. Every little bit helps on the road to 10k, to catch Lego's attention, or even just to inspire someone else with a set idea they worry is too niche to share.

Cause this isn't just about Omori. It's about supporting the creativity of a dedicated fan who spent a long time working on something clearly inspired by a game held closely. And I am always going to support that.

Eyyy so four years ago today, I posted the first three chapters of my story on AO3, having seen an unfinished comic and gotten permission from the artist to write a fic using her premise. This here is the first piece of Songfell art ever, commission from the OG comic creator, @lostmypotatoes 👌

My mom has been having health problems, including me having to help take her to the ER (she's fine, just needs to stay in bed for a while), which delays actual writings a bit. Hello everyone! Long time no see.

I know I haven't posted on here in ages -- to be honest, life has gotten in the way of things, and my interests and focus have changed somewhat over the years going through and out of college now. I would love to return to working on this blog project again one day, but for now, I sadly have to say I'm going to put it on hold indefinitely. I'm very sorry for the few submitters who have been waiting for me to reply for eons! If I ever return to doing this, I will look at your submissions first thing (unless your interests have moved on at that point too -- I totally get that).

With that said, I wanted to make this final post since I realized I never reblogged this. It was brought to my mind due to @dazais-guardian-angel - I just saw that you sent me a message back in August about this (sorry for not seeing it sooner!).

Back in the day I made a post asking for people to help me find WhiteWings. She was a wonderful artist who made beautiful fanart for Blumiere and Timpani. Her original account is gone now sadly; I heard she had made a new account back in the day to get away from some drama, but so far, I haven't been able to find it.

HOWEVER, kind souls like @disneydreamlights and @spacedimentio (hi again, fellas!) sent me some of her art that they had saved. You can see Dreamlight's message to me above -- there are a few more with more art I will post momentarily.

Anyway, I hope that this helps you collect her art, Dazai, as well as anyone else who remembers WhiteWings and wishes to see her art again. I hope she is doing well, wherever she is!

- I've got two real life best friends that I get together with and have coffee every weekend together, and sometimes do other things, and this is significant to me because adulthood makes it hard to keep friends, let alone see them.

- I got into the marine ecology lab at my school that I have been pushing for entrance into, despite missing a pre-req. I get to be on a boat for eight hours next quarter! Woohoo!

- I got fanart for a fic I am very proud of but very rarely interact with anybody about, which has boosted my confidence and made me feel really good, and each comment I've gotten since they posted the art has made my heart sing extra loud!

A. Everything anyone has ever drawn for my fanfics at all ever.

B. SPECIFICALLY everything @alexharrier has drawn for me, ever. Especially specially specially these two gifs which actually make me fucking insane every time I see them.

Honestly, this had me making sounds so incoherent only dogs could hear them, years ago when I did not consider my fic would be special to anyone. I really really really treasure them.

D. Recent, probably familiar still, this Holy Fucking Shit Beautiful Atmospheric work of art for metempsychosis!!!! by @askinsufferableprickmod . I really actually cannot stop looking at it. It's so gorgeous, and honestly even if it had nothing to do with me I would still be in love with it. The concept of the kids are Gods, as beings outside the mortal world they made for themselves, all that is visible here, and I really really love it!

* I know all of these are things people have drawn for me, for my content, but honestly that is why they are my favorites! It is touching to see someone put heart into something that is related to something you, yourself, also put heart into!!! I love it!!!! I love these talented artists!!!!!

7. 🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately

On top of the other reasons I said I don't like things, you do actually have to convince me 6 times outta 10 if you want me to read a Homestuck fic in the third person. There is just something to the flavor of 2nd person that hits different. There is a reason different perspectives exist, and I think they can all be utilized well, but something about that classic, well-patterned "you, and then you" just gets me, you know?

ive been wanting to revisit homestuck for the last year and ive finally gotten up and made a blog about it. i joined tumblr in 2015 specifically because i was reading homestuck and wanted to find fan content about it, but after a while i fell out of the space. i considered myself an ex-homestuck, if you will. but the fan space has changed so much in the almost 10 years since i first really started engaging with it and i really like a lot of the stuff being made now, it's been inspiring and kind of reflects what i remember getting out of the comic more, which just has really driven me to want to start doing fan stuff again. i made so much fanart all the time back when i was in high school, comics and sketches and digital pieces galore. i want to revisit it because in so many ways it feels like it provides a really good platform to jump off of if i want to draw but can't come up with anything right away, you know??? there's so many characters to doodle while you think. so here i am.

May the 4th hit me like a truck and i'm still stuck like a fly to a windshield 3 months later

Man it’s lonely not having people outside of online spaces being just as obsessed with the same media. My sib and I have kind of drifted apart in terms of tastes in shows/fandoms and my folks aren’t interested at all. I don’t really have any friends in my hometown that I could just go on impromptu hangouts to the mall or park with, and the ones I do have their own long established clique and they’re into different stuff. It’s not like in college with living on campus, and all those friends are miles away. These days it’s hard to even find a free day. I think it really comes down to I wish I had someone to turn to and be like “this character connects to this and foreshadows this and did you know etc. etc.” basically infodumping but actually being listened to with the same amount of enthusiasm. 

   I want to talk about Star Wars, casual mainstream stuff I guess, like I’m late in the game but just started the Bad Batch and I got so excited hearing the narrator again. I used to watch the Clone Wars when I was little so it was a huge hit of nostalgia. Funnily enough I’ve basically gotten the highlights of the whole series through reaction posts, fanart, clips, and finally decided ok I’ll check it out after reading a fic (it was "Success Rate" on Ao3 btw). I wasn’t initially interested when the Bad Batch first came out until their personalities really started to show and of course sibling family moments. And I’ll admit the fandom space from what I could see on insta genuinely looked like fun from the sidelines. 

   The Dad Batch is so real, watching the very first episode knowing what happens later on and how much they grow it’s bittersweet and touching. Literally the moment Hunter sees Omega it’s like the remnants of the paternal Mandalorian instincts kicked in. This man was already set on becoming a father figure even if he hadn’t realized it. I just thought it was the fans doing their thing but no I witnessed it with my own eyes they’re all girldads and now I wish I got into the series sooner. 

   Also because I’m an animator at heart I love catching the little side glances between the brothers and the little quirks. For being voiced by the same guy, each of the Bad Batch have their own distinct personalities and mannerisms and I’m having such a good time.

   Omega is such a sweetheart, I don’t get how people could not like her! She’s literally baby and I know she grows up at the end of the series, so seeing how she started out she’s so small! She’s just a kid! She’s their little girl! They love her immediately and wholeheartedly! I didn’t know that in the first episode Order 66 just hits them like that, everything is confusing and chaos, the world they’ve known their whole lives is crumbling down. But they risk their lives and their freedom and return to Kamino for her! 

   The food fight scene was great, absolutely love how they’re ready to throw hands.

Nothing is more euphoric than finding a piece of fanart you remembered liking years ago but not remembering the artist so you go on a long search detective style and then find it! Yes it was Bad Batch content—I liked the occasional art even though I had never seen a single episode until now and I’m living rn absolutely delighted to find the piece was part of TBB Zine! Catching up on quality content now with context is healing rn (just in case the piece is by clone.enthusiast aka Bird on insta, forever treasuring this I’m smiling)-update: i think with the whole Meta AI thing the artist left Instagram and I'm so sad i can't find them.

Anyhoo, wanted to get that part out of my system. Been busy with a new job that's been so draining that I haven't finished Season 1 yet. Burnout has made picking up a pencil feel like holding a hot iron that it just hurts idk. Thinking of making a Tumblr blog just for professional art portfolio things since Instagram is now a hot garbage fire and lots of people are moving to Cara. I don't think i'll leave Insta myself since I've got mutuals there and there's still awesome art around. But yeah that's what's life been lately, if you've read this far, thanks!

16. how many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? share one of them?

i am not exactly sure what nurturing a fic idea means (a fic you're not writing? but have had an idea for???), so i'm just going to mention my main wips and hope for the best. anyway. i have three main wips at the moment, one of which is the bad kids hunger games au and the associated spinoffs, one of which is a naddpod bad endings for hardwon and moonshine concept i started back when i first listened to c1 but have recently found new inspo for, and a third that is a secret tool that will help us later (it's a surprise for someone who follows this blog and i don't want them to know what it is yet). but mostly i've been bouncing between those three rn!

25. what fic do you wish you got more of a response on?

ooooh! i really thought my wayne munson fic would do better since i wrote it during the middle of the st s4 hype, but i really wish my natalia cicero connie lee carter bajar fic had gotten more attention. i was soooooo proud of that fic and then brennan said a lot of stuff in canon that aligned with what i had said in the fic, and despite my mixed feelings about aso as a WHOLE, i really do cherish that fic.

40. if someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

sticking just to work i have currently published, i think the moment where natalia is looking at her clone in the glass tube before she shatters it from i cut my tongue on the rust of a silver spoon would be really cool to see. the scene with plumbeline looking up at/burning the wedding portraits in you and i were made for a season has lived in my head rent free since i wrote it. the scene where snow white has dug herself out of her glass coffin and comes back to the cottage and sees herself in the mirror and realizes her body hasn't aged or matured at all in give me back my girlhood would be a really cool piece i think? i also have a lot of bits in unpublished fics i think would be really cool to see as fanart but all of those are kind of spoilers atm so maybe after those fics have been published i'll revisit this question

Ultra's End-of-Year Recap: Electric Boogaloo

Given how little I think of just how much more insane things can get with each passing year, I really wasn’t expecting how my blog was gonna go in 2022, but after joining an ask blog (Kudos to @another-silly-mixels-blog ), now having little more than 80 followers on here, being a major player in spreading the good word on what’s basically the biggest event in paleomedia in the last few years, and my writing and art skills getting significantly better this year…

I should really give these things more thought, huh? Regardless, I should still celebrate all of the good that came tumbling towards this silly blog of mine. Just like last year, I’m capping off ‘22 with a special ‘lil recap of the biggest events to happen to the Ultra Barrier Reef (And that’s a far better name than what this blog was named originally). Seriously, alot has happened this year, and I really couldn’t be more thankful for all of the support I’ve gotten over the years, both from fans and close friends of mine. You are all amazing! I know I said something like it last time (Maybe?), but consider this my early Christmas present, from me to you.

It still boggles my mind that, of all things to happen this year, we got femboy pterosaurs. I'm all here for it, especially if it makes out-of-touch creationists drown in their own tears. Ken Ham must've made a whole ocean of them at this point.

After seeing @bogleech talking about how Chinchou was a better design than Lanturn, I decided to make a regional form for the lil’ guy, along with adding a new evolution that does both the it and the creatures that it’s based on justice.

If I can be honest with myself, this whole was my Prehistoric Planet Arc. It basically was for alot of people, let's not kid ourselves.

At the end of the day, this was one of the biggest years for the Ultra Barrier Reef. Given that the blog is turning 5 next year, who knows what's gonna happen next? Well, that's the fun part. Down in these shitpost-infested waters, you never know what surprises could bubble up to the surface.

Speaking of surprises, I got an extra-special piece coming up to cap the year off. While you should expect to see that in the next few days, things are gonna be a bit slower for the rest of the year (Mainly due to me taking some time off.).

With all of that said, thank you all so much for the continued support, and I'll be rising back up from the depths next year. Happy Holidays, folks!

8 Shows to know you

@j-ellyfish​ tagged me and my slow ass is finally filling this out.

1. Star Trek (Mostly TOS, but also TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Sorry, but the new stuff just doesn’t look like Star Trek to me.)

This was my first fandom I guess?? I didn’t actually interact with anyone since this is before I ventured onto the depths of the interwebs. I was 10 years old and everyone kept calling me a Vulcan because of how literal I was. I did not know what a Vulcan was but soon found out and got my grubby hands on every piece of media I could find at the local library. I probably watched every VHS and read every novel they had. Spock is still my favorite to this day. I wrote my freaking GED essay about him.

2. Redwall

I might have been even younger when I got into this than when I got into Star Trek. This is just so unknown no one knows what I’m talking about lolol. It was more the books than the show, but it has a short animated series so it still counts. I was obsessed with this. I made forts out of logs by the stream across the street from my house and swords out of wood and play-fought my brother with them.

3. Teen Titans

This was probably my segue into anime. Yes, this isn’t actually an anime, but since it incorporates anime aspects it got me used to them?? I was very into superheroes in general when I was like 12 to 15 or so, but these were my top fave. Controversial opinion: DC is better than Marvel. I made my very first OC based on Teen Titans I think she might have been partly Star Trek too lol. I also started drawing people because of this show. Before that I only drew horses and wolves.

4. InuYasha

My very first anime. It all started when I saw a manga at the library and then looked up the anime on YouTube. Ah, the memories of watching an episode in three parts and you’d never know if it would be the dub or the sub. This was the first fandom where I actually joined the interwebs and interacted with human type people. The internet in 2006 was a very different place lol. I got my first email address (which I still have lol) to join this website called Fanart Central so I could post my InuYasha fanart. I found my first online friends there too. I miss them...

5.  Pokémon

I’m not entirely sure how I managed to watch as much of this as I did, but I only gave up when I got to Alola. The original is my favorite, but I also liked some of the newer stuff too. I drew art for Pokémon too and let me tell you, it’s the most toxic hell hole of a fandom ever. I’ve never gotten flames before Pokémon, all for liking an unpopular ship lol. The internet in 2010 was the Wild West.

6. Yu-Gi-Oh!

Holy crap was I into Ygo. I still have my room covered in it lol. I still love it to bits, but I’ve calmed down a lot. I have a lot of cards too and I do know how to play, but not competitively and I don’t know anyone in person who wants to duel me :( I got into cosplay because of Ygo and made my first cosplay (Joey Wheeler) in 2013. I apparently like to suffer because Ygo cosplays are NOT easy. I made my still best friend in this fandom. Seriously, this is one of the best fandoms out there, most everyone is so nice.

7. Supernatural

(Don’t look at me, I know pfft). I can’t deny how much I like this show... it’s honestly the one I’ve rewatched the most times. I no not know why. I guess it’s just easy to binge lol. You can blame my group of gay guy friends back in 2013 for me getting into this. It’s also why I got Netflix, and tumblr. And here I still am...

8. Hetalia

Oh wow, a Hetalia blog having Hetalia on the list, weird. Got into this at the crusty old age of 28, so I don’t have the nostalgia for it like a lot of y’all. I fell hard pretty fast. I also have made way more friends than probably any other fandom I’ve been in? Probably because I stuck my head out of my shell for a bit lol.

I tag no one because I’m lazy, do it if you want and you can blame me pfft.

I remember like 10 years ago someone posted a piece of fanart I did to their very popular Facebook page, and was selling it on Tshirts. This person had like, thousands of followers, and I politely asked them to like, stop, or at least give me part of the profit, since my art blog sits at a tiny fraction of that follow count, at the time this was just a piece of mine that really took off bc I struck the right fandom while the iron was hot. thankfully they deleted it,, but the damage was kind of done in some respects, and I can’t help but think how much it would have benefitted me if instead of shamefully fleeing from this, the person in question had just like, promoted my work and encouraged people to follow me instead. If they’d first approached me with their idea after realizing how well received my art was, instead of claiming ownership over it. If I were to post that same picture and offer it on shirts, my promo post would likely be mostly ignored save my closest friends and followers, bc that’s how it often works for those of us who aren’t sitting in the thousands of followers already. And I often don’t see people who have these sorts of like, casual liveblog/commenting on official art/ posting memes type pages. Really contend w what their popularity means and how they actually have a lot of power and influence which would really benefit the artists in their viscinity, and oftentimes they choose to instead ignore or even downright steal from us.

I think these people see artists as naturally already getting all this praise and adoration for our skills, perhaps a low key jealousy and feeling of “you already get attention, I can only get attention by stealing” when oftentimes this. Is not the case. It’s seemingly a lot easier for most people to follow a blog that consistently updates, maintains a casual demeanor, and displays very little personality. Than an artist who posts once every couple weeks, or has to balance this in between having a personality and interests which appreciators of their art might not necessarily agree with. It’s such a weird line we have to tread of entertainer and “content creator.” Art of mine that’s been reposted by such blogs on tumblr has also gotten like, 10x the notes I typically get. Which sucks even more bc they had to go out of their way to steal it from me, a relatively unknown artist, instead of reblogging, potentially forming a bond with me which benefits both of us. Like. Where’s the sense in that? Why. I get that there’s a perception of artists being aloof and difficult to approach. But honestly, most of us won’t like, fucking bite you, if you approach us like humans. We can just be on edge bc of how this presupposition sometime causes people to approach us in the most hostile and entitled way possible.

a (not so) short interlude: fanfiction

Hello friends!

This week I have taken a break from working on my original story and instead wrote a piece of fanfiction. At first glance this may not seem like something unusual. In my bio I state I am a professional nerd afterall, and though I don’t believe I have ever discussed it on here, I do consume quite a bit of fanfiction along with original novels. However, the truth is that I had never actually written fanfiction. Well, before this week that is. 

In my one writing class (the same writing class I am doing this blog for in fact) we have been assigned to create a Remix, which is basically what it sounds like: taking other people’s content and cut/copy and pasting it to create something different/new. Remixes are the basis of fan-culture: fanfiction, fanart, video edits– all of these constitute as Remixes. And so, of course, my first, and strongest idea, for the assignment was to write a fanfiction. I wasn’t sure if that was allowed within the constraints of the assignment, so this week I basically asked my professor if I could write and submit a fanfiction for a class assignment. 

The things you do at university ladies and gentlefolk. 

I didn’t ask in so many words of course, and my professor was super chill about it and seems really excited for what I would come up with so that's cool. She’s going to be reading this post at some point actually so…

Anyway, all this to say, I was inspired to write my first fanfiction this week. It is not a part of the project I will be turning in for class, however it does introduce and develop some original characters, relationships, and conflicts that I may include in my class fanfic.

Oh! And before I let you get into it, I suppose I should let y’all know that it’s a Harry Potter fanfiction. That being said, I hope you enjoy!!

“Muggle sports are so interesting,” Em said, swinging the pale pink baseball bat she carried up onto her shoulder with a flourish. “Don’t you think, Marcus?” She rolled her head back over her shoulder with a taunting smile to stare down Marcus Flint, who paused from where he was sauntering down the hallway with the Slytherin quidditch team, scoffing at Emma’s question.

“You think I know what the fuck your talking about, blondie? Muggle sports? As if lower myself to even touch anything associated with muggles.” His massive nose wrinkled as if he had taken a whiff of something particularly nasty, sneering down at the smaller girl. The whole hallway has frozen by this point.

“What even is that thing?” Adrian Pucey called out, “Looks like a fucked Beater’s batt,” he said, unintentionally echoing my question from earlier. “Are you sure they even use that for sport? Looks thin enough it could snap in half with one blow.” Laughter tittered through the gathered Slytherins and even some pure blood students from other houses.

“And would they even hit anything with it?” Malfoy cut in, snidely. “They’re not as developed as wizards, with their inferior reflexes. Clumsy oafs.” He sniffed with derision and the Slytherin’s laughter grew, through the rest of the students had piped down. Emma’s smile had dropped.

Flint’s sneer turned into a cruel grin “I’d think you would know that quite well, what with the spectacle your relatives made last year.” 

He was, of course, referring to when Emma had gotten caught up in the Chamber of secrets mess and had been petrified. Her muggle aunt had some to visit all the way from America and was in hysterics, though, rightfully so. Ems had to wait until near the end of the term for the mandrake draught to age to be cured as the Hogwarts Board had not seen it fit to allot a budget to import some from overseas. 

As Pucey, Malfoy and the rest of the Slytherin team snickered, Flint continued on, striking his final blow, “Poor little mudblood.” 

He leaned back, apparently satisfied with himself as Ems spun on her heel to face him fully, steel in her eyes and stone faced, the pink bat still on her shoulder. 

The thing about Emma that many people still don’t get, even though we are well into our Fourth Year at Hogwarts, is that though she may be a Hufflepuff, she is never one to back down from a challenge. Especially if she initiated it. Especially if it deals insults to her family and friends.

A sickeningly sweet smile rose to her face. “Oh, I’m so sorry, Marcus,” she simpered, false concern evident in her voice, “I forget sometimes that some people are so uneducated on this side of the pond.” Flint's face dropped and his relaxed pose faltered. “I’ll make sure to speak slowly for you, don’t worry.” That gained Ems a few snickers of her own from the other students in the crowded hall, but the Slytherins all tensed and a few people left to go grab a Professor.

Emma took a step forward as if nothing was wrong, smile still in place, but fire in her eyes. “This is called a baseball bat. It’s used in a sport called baseball. It’s very popular in America, even among the wizarding community. I unfortunately don’t think I have the skills to explain the whole game to you in a way that you would understand, but a baseball bat functions similarly to a beater bat. However, the ball that one must hit is much smaller than a bludger.” Emma paused here to take another step forward, her smile growing into something sharper. “What that means, Marcus, is that a baseball bat is much, much better for hitting,” she glanced down his body, making sure he saw the direction of her gaze when she looked back into his eyes a few seconds later, “smaller targets.”

Marcus inhaled sharply and the Slytherin team stood frozen as several students in the hall burst into laughter. Emma stepped back, her smile turning into a much more genuine smirk. “And for the record Marcus, I’m very grateful my aunt came all the way from America to visit me when I was attacked by the Heir of Slytherin. I’m very lucky to have such wonderful family. I’m sure your father would have done the same for you.” Flint flinched back slightly, hurt flashing across his face, though it was quickly covered by a scowl. Now that was a bit of a low blow, though arguably it was deserved. It was the worst kept secret in Slytherin that Marcus and his father did not get along, to put it lightly. 

Just then, a Ravenclaw prefect rounded the corner with Professors McGonagall and Snape in tow. Students very quickly began to disperse, including the rest of the Slytherin team, as Professor Snape raised an eyebrow at the scene. “Just what is going on here?” 

“Nothing, professors,” Emma bounced on her heels as she turned towards Snape and McGonagall, beaming at them. I could have sworn I heard Professor Snape mutter “too bright” under his breath, but I could be mistaken. “I was just telling Marcus about the American muggle sport called baseball,” she gestured to the bat on her shoulder.

Then, she turned to look at Flint again. “I’m so sorry to cut this riveting conversation short but I really do have to go and check on some of my plants. I’m sure Professor Burbage would be happy to continue to explain baseball to you if you ask politely. Though, that may be a challenge for you,” she nodded gravely to herself, “You should work on that. I hear that adequate etiquette skills are needed in pure blood circles, but I’m sure I wouldn’t know anything about that, being muggleborn myself.” 

She smirked at Flint, daring him to say anything and reveal the fact that he had called her a slur. Flint looked down and glared at the floor. Ems shifted her gaze back to the bewildered professors. “I was actually raised in the wizarding world, professors. It’s actually quite interesting! The American magical government is a little less strict about no-maj, sorry, muggle separation and my muggle aunt did marry a wizard.” 

“When my parents passed away and my aunt and uncle took me in, they revealed the world of magic to me. My aunt still works in the muggle world, but my uncle works for MACUSA.” Ems grinned. “That’s how it was so easy for me to get approval to study abroad here at Hogwarts. It’s where my uncle went. Anyway, I really do have to go. See you in transfiguration tomorrow Professor MacGonagal, bye!” With that Emma skipped away.

Snape shook his head slightly and turned back to Flint. “Do you have anything to add to Miss Williams’ account, Mr Flint.”

Flint’s mouth pinched and his shoulders hunched but he just shook his head and said, “No, Professor.”

MacGonagal huffed a short breath. “Right, then. Everything seems to be in order.” She  shooed Flint off. “Away with you Mr Flint, there’s no need to dawdle in the corridors. And thank you Mr Turner for grabbing us to deescalate the situation,” she said turning to the prefect, “2 points to Ravenclaw.”

Flint shuffled off, as MacGonagal left with the Ravenclaw prefect, Turner, who was asking her about something or other transfiguration related. Only Snape remained in the hall, and when both parties turned opposite corners, he spoke again. “Miss Woodward.”

I remained hidden. 

He sighed. “Miss Woodward I would like an account of these events from your own perspective this evening. Please arrive at my office after dinner, no later than 7.” With that he turned and stalked off.

I stepped out from the tapestry I was hiding behind and made a mental note to send Ems a note thanking her. I myself then turned and made my way to the courtyard despite the winter chill, resolved to avoid the dungeons and my head of house until after dinner.

I’m quite proud of what I have written here and for my first fanfiction ever I don’t think I’ve done too shabby of a job. But, with that, since this post is a little longer than normal, I shall let you go.

Hi! I found out about closing from your post and at first thought that was some old news but then I realised and cried for like 15 minutes 🫠 I’ve been in this fandom for 3 years and i have a Russian blog about Beetlejuice (there’s actually quite a lot of fans of this musical in Russia 🙃) and I know I probably would never have a chance to see Beetlejuice live but it became such an important part of my life so it’s just heartbreaking to see these news. At this point I just don’t understand why this happened and can fans do anything about it😔 I’m also wondering what will happen with fan art mural. My art got there and it made me extremely happy cause at least some part of my love for this show will be there on broadway but now I think they will take it all down and it makes me even more sad :( Thanks for listening (I really like your blog btw🤗)

i am,,, so sorry you had to learn it from me 😭 it literally did not occur to me in the moment other people have lives and might not have heard yet.

i had no idea it has such a big Russian fanbase!! that makes me so happy!!!! there are few things i love more than hearing about this show’s reach both on a widespread level and an individual level. i feel awful you won’t get to see the show on broadway but i’m just so glad it found you at all and affected your life the way it did 💜

i’ll miss the fanart wall and really feel for everyone whose art won’t get to live there anymore, but i’m also so happy for you that you were able to have a small piece of you at the theater even for a limited time.

obviously i’m incredibly sad this show’s run is coming to an end, but i’m also fully aware how lucky i am to have gotten the experiences with this show i have and just focusing on staying grateful. my heart really goes out to the fans without the ability to see it before closing. at the very least i get to remind people in the U.S. about the national tour (and people in the UK about the rumored West End transfer) but for other fans like you i hate not being able to do anything so i’m playing around with a few small ideas for making the show as accessible as is within my power:

My first impulse after watching this clip was to comment how David is going to have a coughing fit when he sees this, but I remember the Doctor Who era and this man will not be easily shocked, nor flustered, when it comes to fandom and smut. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the very few people in the fandom who know how very much not innocent and oblivious David Tennant is. So many suggestive jokes, flirting and kissing and teasing about fanfiction and different ships. He's just as much of a bastard as Michael. 🙄 We'll be having a blast during the next few years with these two, gosh.

I absolutely love, love, love what Michael said tonight, and not just for obvious reasons.

As much as I love Graham Norton and believe he is funny and quick and truly a talented interviewer, I have really come to dislike what he does with fanfic/fanart. In any number of past interviews, Graham has brought up fan works, and not only read excerpts of fanfic starring the actors he has on as guests, but shown them pieces of (often explicit) fanart drawn to look like them, too. It’s a “bit” of his that hangs on the edge of derision, not-so-subtly being condescending toward fan works and insulting the people who create them by trying to make the actors who play these roles uncomfortable, and a lot of the time, it works.

But not with Michael Sheen.

I have written on this blog before and been saying for years how much I wish the subject of fanfic would come up while Michael is on Graham’s show. Because I knew--I knew--Michael would not flinch. And like you said, Anon #2, Michael not only didn’t flinch, he brought up fanfic first, and--apropos of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING--talked about how gay it all is and actually uttered the words “me and David Tennant having sex.” I mean...you’re really going to try and embarrass the man who does that? Who openly defended fanfic right when GO first came out? Who has definitely read and/or written GO fanfic/possibly read RPF and probably has his own account on AO3 with bookmarks that I am DYING to see?

Nope. Nuh-uh. No way. Not today, Satan. Not today.

(By way of disclaimer: This does not mean I endorse sending Michael fanfic. As my good friend @daziechane pointed out, Michael may wholeheartedly approve of it, but that does not mean it’s okay to send him fic. Especially since he knows good and god damn well where to get it if he wants it. Oh, yes...)

As for David, Anon #1, I am completely with you, because David is not even remotely as innocent or oblivious as some people think or as he pretends to be. I discovered that myself a while back when I started getting more into David, and his sense of humor is completely wicked and dirty...he’s just more discreet about it (these days, at least). But all I could think of is how David would have reacted if he was with Michael on the show, and there is no doubt in my mind that he would have smiled and happily nodded along with everything Michael said, just like he always does.

Hell, I’d be willing to bet that if/when David watched Michael tonight, he texted him right after that wanting to know exactly what fanfics Michael has been reading. Or maybe they FaceTimed, just so David could see Michael’s face. I imagine their expressions would have been something like this (but more intimate and cuter because David would have his glasses on and it would be just the two of them):

There is no question that this is just the beginning. GO 2 isn’t even finished filming yet, and Michael is champing at the bit to talk about him and David having sex. I MEAN. And the best thing is that Michael and David will encourage and egg each other on with the suggestive comments and innuendo. They also did it on the first press tour, of course, but now things are so different, and Michael and David have gotten SO much closer over the past year that the press tour for GO 2 is going to make the first press tour look subtle in comparison. And I, for one, cannot wait.

I didn’t want to get my hopes up high for 2022, but to start off the year this way just feels correct, and like maybe things won’t be so shitty after all. Michael Sheen is truly the gift that keeps on giving, and we (and David Tennant) are so lucky to have him...

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?

Oh god.

Like I wrote Mando to start off this blog, which was bad Mando fics and I might edit and re-post them someday, but the actual first fanfic was probably when I was a tween, I don't the age, I don't if it's still up, I don't know the title.

What I do know it was Shadow the Hedgehog x Amy the hedgehog fic, and it probably was not very good. And I know did a Scourge the Hedgehog fic too, cause I was a Sonic fanatic as a child (I bought the comics with my Christmas money)

but it was a shadow the hedgehog x Amy the hedgehog fic. I don't know what the plot was, I think they might've gone out for a date, it might still exist on ff.net (I should check to see if my older, very tween cringe username is on there), but I'm not linking it if I do even find it. That shit stays buried.

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

Secret Ingredient hands down.

I've gotten a lot, a lot of fanart for SI. And like, each one has been my phone background at some point. They make me so happy and warm my heart.

I'd say Timeless would be nice too, but honestly, I don't think we're far enough into it, to get some Timeless fanart. (Chapter 5 I can see some visually interesting scenes happening that may catch someone's eye but right now, the fun hasn't started yet)

Also if anyone drew porn of my smut fics, you'd win my heart in a second.

40. What do you struggle with the most within your writing?

writing well lmao

I struggle a lot with like describing situations? I think last time I did asks like these I was like 'man I suck at dialogue' and now I've realized I'm really having fun with dialogue since I've relaxed about it, and descriptions are more like hmmmmm

like cowboy fic I was going over to try and make sure the descriptions were okay cause I realized halfway through there was a movement that shouldn't have happened and why his hat tumbles off halfway through (spoilers whoops)

but I think I struggle the most with editing. It's very hard for me to stay focused. I usually have to get high if I want to edit well, and I've been greening out more when I do, resulting in me being more depressed and not editing.

so it's me just trying to stay focused and edit and trying my bestest, but I wanna learn how to edit good so it's good practice?

1. When did you start writing on Tumblr?

technically it was around 2011, but that was more...of a weird time. i don’t typically consider it in my proper rp "career” because i didn’t do promos or tags or care much about anything. so. i tend to say the end of 2012.

i made a blog for tmnt 2003 raphael on exsaitementandfistfights ( later cutting it down to exsaitement ), and...began rping. it wasn’t very fancy, my "icons” were bigger screenshots, but that was perfectly okay. i enjoyed it. i made friends, experienced my first exes, and began to improve myself as i did so.

this was an example of the psd progress i’d eventually gotten up to by the time i retired raph. i think this was...2016-ish? but his stories were done by that point, and i primarily only talked about him with a close friend on discord by that time.

zhongluc, admittedly. i blame @sakuragnosis​. ironically, it was a piece of zhongluc fanart that made me briefly consider rping diluc, and now i rp both members of the ship. i really am booboo the fool.

7. NOTP for your muse?

i think the closest thing would be zhong/xiao, and not only because of the father/son dynamic that most people seem to imply. the power imbalance, the whole-hearted devotion on xiao’s side, and the fandom’s weird obsession with those things...yeah no i’m good my guy.

21. Are there certain characters that you gravitate towards?

i guess a type of mine are “dad” characters? father figures? it makes a certain amount of sense, considering even a crack rp character i had eventually had “father figure” as a trait, but then you realize that zhongli is only the latest and the others i’d had previously are more villainous or at least morally gray...

24. What about your muse are you most proud of?

zhongli is one of the few muses who has me actively googling and looking for resources made by people of a culture in order to get things right, or to at least give a more authentic portrayal of him. i’ve spent a good portion of time researching certain things for certain threads, and it’s been really fun!
