(kicks the door down, fire surrounding me like a stage concert) I AM SAID AO3 USER COMMENT YOU WILL NEVER FIND MEEEEE I READ YOUR REPLY TO MINE AND BAWLED you get me you gget me so hard ao3 user anomaly98!!!!!!! (i did say in my comment i dug thru ur tumblr and here i am yet again)
not because i'm a prick not revealing myself thoughg i just have self esteem issues bc of liking qpr xiaolumi. yeah thas righrt i am shy of exposing that i dig this side of the r/s and i don't delve into the romantic one ever. prolly cus i'm an aromantic myself but like YOU KNOW- i just want to pop in to rlly emphasize the fics really do mean a lot to me in words you got it better described. that qpr in general has a different feel to intimacy and it fits them so nicely as people who are?? i guess, lonely but surrounded? (lumine to her friends who doesn't understand her enough, xiao to the adepti in that same matter, and the people of liyue who will never listen back to him), and here's another few disgustingly picky thing i got that your fics have that i tend to do in brainrotting it; most in lumine's pov and having her see through xiao's vulnerability firsthand. gosh that is so rare, you'd think bc he's always portrayed strong boi yaksha to protect the traveler all the time, but not in this perspective. and when yuou have her care for him both in the shower and bed just sends me straight face first into bed squealing crying blood of the consideration of ~~~~this whatever invisible distance~~~~ they have like its on lumine's condition to be aware of; she insists and ask first, and xiao is still allowed to say yes And no- and ~~~~this whatever closeness~~~~ xiao is reluctant to provide and its only to lumine's promptings in their friendship he accepts it, and felt warm enough to reach out if not in a ghostly touch.
very specifically, i love to see them not so in love with each other- i mean they can fall in love anytime (and in my interpretation they're a lot slower than yours in development but still a path to qpr eventually). i see their relationship as,... very fragile, but very grounding. its this small important part of their life they can shed their masks and be vulnerable like your recent fic to find each other's answers and resolve through it together because they're the Only two people of this world to understand (aside aether, aside all ppl xiao lost) that makes their dynamic so meaningful and i hope more ppl can see that side of them. ao3 user anomaly98 this is why YOU GET MEEEEEEEEE
deep breath.
if you do not wish to be found i will not search please know my inbox is always here i will welcome you with open arms <- pretend im saying this like Really Dramatically real somber real like. idk. like the way an ancient narrator begisn the story and reads the prophecy THAT kind of drama thats the vibe
its okay i would simply never assume u were a prick and i 100000% understand the insecurity that comes with enjoying certain aspects of ships and ESPECIALLY insecurity rooted in Being Aromantic and Enjoying Things In An Aromantic Sort Of Way like ive gotten way better its prob the only reason im able to write them how i want now but i ABSOLUTELY have been there i Understand
lonely but surrounded is SUCH a good way to put it. i genuinely do think lumine is close with a LOT of the others, i think she has a lot of trust and care for them, but its not the same. its not the same depth, not the same commitment, you're SO right comparing it to like. idk !!! idk. lumine once had aether who understood everything so easily and xiao had the other yakshas they both had a family, once, they both had people who understood, once, and now no matter who they love and trust in that matter they are alone. and that's something i love so much about the dynamic i envision for them, the fact that they're able to share such a unique loneliness, the fact that in not being understood by anyone around them they're able to understand each other. there's a level of distance and disconnect between them and those around them that doesn't exist with the other. its SO fucking important to me.
xiao is SO often depicted as being either a) very protective, strong, unbreakable etc or b) very vulnerable and fragile and i fairly often see fics of like. one of them protecting the other, almost? or less that but fics where the dynamic is Skewed, where one of them has the Role of protector and the other the Role of protected, where those roles are set in stone. and i think them being on the same wavelength, capable of protecting each other at any point, equally capable of either- that's so fucking important to me. it's not just that one of them is vulnerable, its that they're vulnerable with each other. it's not just that one of them will fight, it's that they'll fight for each other and fight together. it's equal. it's shared. so much between them is shared. their loneliness, their otherness, the unique way they feel about each other, their grief.
"i love to see them not so in love with each other" no bc this FUCKS. in my little brain i imagine it still takes time but i do definitely write it as being faster, and i think i imagine it as faster too? less rushing into it or any sense of need to be closer and more of just clicking so quickly, so easily, that what follows feels natural. "very fragile, but very grounding" is another REALLY good way of putting it your MIND oh my GOD!!!!!
idk just. for me so much of it is the small moments? sometimes when im walking out in the preserve the wind is cool and the air is fresh and the sun is warm and i think oh, this isn't so bad. this is lovely. and that's the kind of vibe i try to go for with them. contentedness over happiness, smaller gestures over grand ones. a quiet kind of love.
okay im losing my entire thought process idk that i had one to begin with admittedly but yknow. time to think about them for 120 billion years and never ever stop i wish iwasnt so tired id try writing more Literally Right Now. might try anyways and channel the sleepy into some sort of rly peaceful early morning/late night scene who knows
#parasocial bestie tag#<- that's you now until i come up w/ something better LMAO#xiaolumi#<- and THATS so i dont lose this

"𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘏𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘚𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 ”
Summary: Draco making you feel better about your hair insecurities throughout your years at Hogwarts.
Word Count: 3.7k+
A/N-hey well this is the first fic I’ve ever written and I don’t think it’s too good but please leave some feedback I would really appreciate it :) just looking forward to improving, this story includes a black/POC reader I just feel that there’s not a lot of stories that actually include us yk ? Because I don’t think I’m able to just put my hair up in a messy bun and go out lol.//ALSO there's no Voldemort and some of the years/dates will be off but I don’t think that matters much in this story:)
masterlist // taglist form.
“It’s a toner” “for your hair”,she concluded in a way that was almost innocent but didn’t cover up the obvious amusement in her tone. Her box braids were flowing behind her, the two different colors blending together in a way to almost resemble Narcissa Malfoys. It was more of a Draco decision, he went on for months saying how if you got white hair you would look like an honorary Malfoy. Which he was already planning on making you sooner or later.
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
“Darling your fascination with these muggle products is getting out of hand. Are you ill? Oh merlin, maybe it’s that muggle flu,”he said as he put a hand on your forehead.
In his defense he was actually worried about you.You owled him with a note that read
Dear Draco,
I think I’ve just found the best bloody gift ever,I was just walking around one of those muggle stores and found i! I don’t want to ruin the surprise but the I just thought of you when I saw it.
love, y/n.
He honestly expected a bag of green apples that you two shared a liking of but never in a million years did he expect you to show up with purple bottle labeled as “Purple Shampoo”.And what hurt most is that he was the first person you thought of when you looked at it.Of course he was the only platinum blonde you had seen with such bright hair, other than Luna Lovegood. But he was still deciding on if he should take offense or not.
“No Draco, I’m perfectly fine” You stated as you stated his hand away like a fly.“I just think that your hair may need a bit of toning to it.” You said as you looked at your boyfriend, he really did look beautiful in the sun.
The way the sun would bounce off of his skin and hair giving him this sort of glow. The way he ever so slightly had his eyes squinted because he could barely see when it was this bright outside. He was really a sight to see.He wore a faint smile that made your stomach erupt with butterflies every time you saw him, even now.
You told him that if he continued to bully Harry on how his glasses made him look like Dumbledore without a beard would come back to him.And of course it did.
You were sitting beside Draco under a tree at his family's manor. The sky had a few clouds but nonetheless it was sunny there were butterflies flying around and variations of colors of flowers all around you.You had helped Narcissa plant some of the flowers and it was nice to see how it all came out.
“I think my hair looks perfectly fine, why would I want to “tone it” He looked at you as if you had personally insulted his mother.
“Draco, darling, your hair is almost brighter than the sun” you said and you were so close to bursting out in laughter.
He looked at you faking an offended expression.
“Most likely stiffer than the grass we’re sitting on at this moment”
“oh that’s enough” at that moment he shifted his weight over to you and started to tickle you non stop.
“Please I’m sorry I take back all of my words” you said in out of breath tone.Your laugh was probably the best sound to him.
He continued with his antics, “say my hair is the most beautiful this world” it wasn't even a second thought to him to follow up with a,“other than yours of course” he always had a way of making you feel appreciated for the multiple ways you did your hair through out your school years and even now.
Fourth Year
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
In the summer before your fourth year at hogwarts, you had decided that you wanted to try something new and get locs. It was something you always thought of but never really got the courage to do.
You always would just tell yourself “I think I’d miss my hair, even if doing it is a pain I’ll never stop loving it.”
That changed.Of course you’d missed your hair but getting locs, something you've been anticipating for a long time sounded a bit more exciting than doing your hair everyday.
It was finally the Gryffindor vs Slytherin quidditch game.Everyone had been looking forward to this.Every Slytherin, Gryffindor game always involved some sort of drama and it was the best. That day was nice up until it was completely and utterly ruined.
When the game was over Pansy Parkinson had shouted out to you and Angelina Johnson that your hair looked of worms.Angelina Johnson was probably the only Gryffindor you could put up with.Maybe it was because of the fact that she was an older black girl with her natural hair out and you desperately wanted tips on how to make yours look like hers. You and Angelina had quickly became friends in your first and her third year. She was more of a sister figure for you and when she went on about how nice Fred looked this year and the next you went on about how annoyingly hot Draco got third year She had teased you endlessly for it but you really couldn’t help it.
You didn’t know why it hurt so much coming from her but when that happened you were so close to crying. You were going to say something until Ginny Weasley said some very choice words to Pansy that left her as red as a tomato and she ran of the pitch. For someone with so much bark she absolutely no bight after that, you thanked Ginny and she responded with saying “There’s no reason to thank me Parkinson needed someone to finally give it to her” She then went up to Harry Potter and said he did good in the game.
“I don’t know if she knows her crush on him is obvious” You thought as you and Angelia walked back to the castle together planning on how to get Pansy back.
You heard the girl beside you try to stop a laugh from coming out so you just assumed you said that out loud.as always.
”Do you know what she has against you?”Angelina asked
Even though Pansy was in your house she never much liked you for some reason.
“I think it’s from first year when I slapped her hand off of my hair.” You laughed “She was playing with the beads as if they were some kind of toy”
“She absolutely deserved it!” Angelia responded with a laugh.
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
Much to you and Angelina’s dismay someone had gotten to Pansy before you.She ran into the great hall shrieking and when you looked the first thing that came to mind was low quality Medusa. Her long thin black hair now replaced with black worms.Everyone in the great hall was laughing at her condition.Even many of the Slytherins you were surrounded by, it was almost sad how her own house didn’t like her. almost.
Why would she even come into the great hall looking like that? You thought out loud on accident. You really needed to work on that.It wasn’t much of a problem though, because many of your pupils next to you nodded mindlessly at your statement in agreement.
You had guessed Angelina had told Fred about the incident, he told McGonagall, or as he said Minnie (you didn’t know how he even got to that level),and she must have informed the other teachers.
She ran out of the great hall when she noticed no one not even a teacher was going to help her.Not even her own head of house, it was nice to know that Snape was on your side on this you felt pretty bad now when in class all you thought about was how greasy his hair was and how you should probably anonymously drop off some shampoo for him.
“Hey maybe I should tell the twins about that one.Nope y/n you are a nice person who does nice things you thought as you tried to remove the voice that told you that’s Snape would mostly likely like some Muggle Brand “Head and Shoulders Shampoo” Although you’d never be caught dead using it, it could never hurt to try it on someone else.y/n stop.Nice thoughts.”Oh but imagine him trying to put his hair up and the hair tie is too greasy to ho-” You decided to turn your attention to something more valuable at that point.
The real question was who had done it.You turned over to the Gryffindor table.Your back had been facing Angelina’s.You two always did this seeing as many students at school didn’t know that touching someone’s hair randomly without even asking was weird.Angelina had found a solution saying “We should sit with our backs facing each other,Then no one from the other table can random tug at our hair.” You agreed to the idea saying that it was brilliant.
You asked with a giddy expression asking her “did you do it without me?”
She shook her head and said “no maybe it was Fred or George”.
You would’ve thought that the girl was drugged up on love potion seeing how easily she forgot what she was about to ask and looked at Fred with heart eyes going on about a completely different topic.
You rolled your eyes with a smile and looked around the great hall and your eyes landed on him.He was already looking at you.Your hair. You made the decision of adding gold accessories to it today. Angelina had had a long talk with you saying how “Parkinson was only jealous because the last remotely good hairstyle she had was the bob in your third year” You decided that you still wanted to add something to your hair to make yourself feel better. Not for the acceptance of the others and how they think your hair “should look”.
When he finally looked into your eyes you raised your eyebrows in expectance. You were almost waiting for him to say some sort of mean comment about you.
The truth was Draco was absolutely enthralled by you.He liked how when in first year you came into school with your hair in braids and beads of light brown, dark brown, and white beads. He liked when in second year you started to wear your hair out more often. The way it would always smell of Shea or Coconut.
But who was he to go up to a random person who barely knew him and say “oh your hair smells really nice”
He noticed how other kids would sometimes touch your hair and you obviously didn’t like that. You noticed that Draco wasn’t going to make some sort of mean comment you realized it was him who did it.You mouthed a “thank you” with a grateful smile and Draco nodded and smiled warmly.
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
Weird thing is Draco probably gained his crush on you when he said saw that you two had both used an excessive amount of gel in your hair.
It was a dark time, second year, for you, and your hair, where slick backs were the only real things you knew how to do to style your hair. You wanted so badly to be like the other girls in your house who don’t even have to try with getting their hair up in the morning.Draco didn't mind though.
He liked when in third year you decided to wear your hair in an afro. He hated when he found you in a corner crying because some slytherin boys had said how your hair was “Worse than poor mudblood Grangers”.
Third Year
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
He liked when he made up a story to his father and got the boys detention in the forbidden forest with Hagrid. He liked when he charmed a butterfly hair clip that he had charmed to flutter it's wings and left it on the outside of your dorm door.He had hoped none of your roommates would get to it before you did.
As he walked down the stairs and said in almost incoherent tone “They better not bloody get to it before her. What idiot would possibly think a flat golden butterfly clip y/n’s favorite animal was theirs? Merlin and who in their right mind would think that a baby blue box with the name y/n on it in golden letters was theirs?”
“Honestly” he scoffed as he continued down the steps he was met with Blaise Zambini’s wide grin. They walked side by side in silence until Blaise spoke up.
“Mate you’re absolutely whipped, sneaking to her dorm before she wakes up to drop off a clip?” He turned over to Draco and was met with a scowl that looked like it could kill.It didn’t phase him though and he continued with a wide grin.
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
Blaise had known his friend had some infatuation with the girl ever since their second year when y/n passed by them and Draco leaned over and asked in an anxious tone,”Hey Blaise do ya think it'd be weird to tell someone their hair smells good”.
They had been working on finishing their potions essay and when he looked up he was met with a sight of his friends head in his hand as he admired you from across the common room.
Blaise obviously didn't want him to ruin his chance before he even got one, he smirked and answered with,”Mate.Yes.Don’t do that.” He looked over at Draco in a side eye way.Of course Draco didn’t notice he was too busy staring at you as you talked with Daphne Greengrass about with boy you think is the cutest at Hogwarts. He was trying to get closer to hear your response, in the process almost tipping over his ink. Blaise grabbed the ink swiftly and said in a stern tone ”I’m not kidding, that’d be bloody weird.”
“Right, it would be” he said in an almost dazed tone as he shook his head and went back to writing his potions essay.
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
He liked you when you walked into the great hall ten minutes late with your group of friends. You had a slicked back ponytail with the clip right on the right side of it.
He liked you when he heard you say to your friends “Godric I’m telling you guys I love the person who gave me this clip” You said as you took the clip out your hair with a bright smile that in Draco’s opinion could make guy swoon “and get this the wings move, isn’t that brilliant?”
He was overjoyed that you seemed to enjoy the new presence of the butterfly clip.Blaise nudged him and widened his eyes.Draco finally got out of his daze and noticed you gave him a smile he quickly smiled back and looked down trying to hide the blush on his face as he looked down at his plate.
He could hear Blaise snickering on the side of him muttering something about “its sad you can’t just tell her already”
Fifth Year
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
Draco was never the guy on the other end of the bullying but when Profferer Moody had transformed him into a ferret he was completely humiliated. He quickly responded with a harsh “My father will hear about this!”
That’s when he noticed you at the front of the crowd with almost tears in your eyes as you told McGonogall what happened. You really did always look perfect in his eyes.Your melanated skin was shining in the sun practically counting off the sun and that shimmering butterfly clip halfway flying around on your hair.Something about you just couldn’t stop Draco from looking admiring you.He decided to run and probably go hide somewhere from all of the humiliation. He was running so fast probably crying at this point over what happened that he couldn’t even hear some footsteps following him and few minutes later.
He was sitting down in some old nook in the castle crying of humiliation. Muttering words of “How dare he stick me down of all people bloody Crabbe’s pants” and “Godric in front of her too”.
He could barely hear the small and careful “Hi” you gave to him.
He quickly looked up with a harsh glare and when he noticed it was you his eyes softened and he responded with a small “Hey”.He then put his face back into his hands hoping that you would just go away. Even if he wanted you to stay.
“Merlin, she really is seeing me like this,” He thought.
He felt her sit by him and their legs practically touching. When she touched he flinched a bit at the contact. His father and mother did love him but his dad Lucius didn’t exactly show it through physical touch and he obviously couldn’t get his mum to come to the school and give him some kind of goodnight hug could he?
“Oh I’m sorry,I probably shouldn’t have done that,” She spoke in a rushed and apologetic tone as she started to move over to give him space.
“No you’re fine just not used to it is all” y/n felt herself saddened at those words and took it as an invitation to grab one of his hands and lace their fingers together.
At this point Draco felt like he was going to explode and even if his hands were wet from his tears he wasn’t about to pull his hand away.”Um, Draco, I just wanted to say that Moody had no right doing that” “Teachers aren’t even aloud to that here, even though you were coming after potter no one deserves that.
“Thanks for coming to comfort me, it really erm, means a lot from you” He said as he looked down at your hands the paleness of his and the brown tones of your contrasting against each other. The sight really did make his stomach erupt with butterflies but all Draco could come up with was he felt sick but a good sick. The girl he liked didn’t laugh at him when he got turned into a bloody ferret and she actually took the time to check up on him. That was enough for him.
“I’m happy it does” you said as you looked foward with a small content smile. They sat in a comfortable silence for a few seconds before y/n spoke “If it means anything,I think you make an adorable ferret” y/n said with a small laugh.Draco let out a breathy laugh and before he could even think he blurted out “Your hair smells really nice”
Really Draco he thought you get her to sit next. to you, hold your hand, and you told her hair smells good?? Why can’t we just listen to Blaise Godric wha-” His racing thoughts were interrupted by y/n.
“Oh-Um well thank you” She responded with a small nod and a content smile and she knew this was the time. She turned to the boy beside her and said “you were the ones to get those boys detention for me right”
Draco looked up at her for the first time since she sat down eyes red and wide.He became a rambling mess and started to awkwardly state, “Well erm y-you know I just thought they deserved it b-becau-”
“And I’m also assuming you’re the one to give this clip?” She interrupted with the brightest smile her and Draco now looking at each other.
“Well erm-yes” he said meekly. He was still holding your hand resisting the urge to look down at them forever.
“How’d you know?” You said eagerly. Draco looked at you a bit confused until you said “How’d you know that a butterfly is my favorite animal?”
Draco started to gain some confidence and said “Well I had been having a bloody crush on you since first year so I thought it was only appropriate to know your favorite animal at least ” He hadn’t noticed what he had just revealed as he continued to tell y/n things.“I’m really sorry about the hair comment too” He rambled “It's just that I've been waiting to get that compliment in since second year.” He mumbled in a way that was almost too low to hear then spoke up,“Blaise told me it was rather odd and that I shouldn’t tell you th-”
That’s when he noticed her face.As if he hadn’t been admiring her for the past five years of his school life. She wore a look that was giving off all different kinds of emotions but the one that was mainly seen was happiness and appreciation.
“Godric no” y/n breathed out “I think that’s the best sort of compliment I could get” Draco looked at her brightly then she continued “and well” She started looking down at their entangled hands “I’ve liked you for a long time too” “If you wanted to know” She looked up at him and he was in a sort of shock? It was like he was waiting for her to say “only joking” and run away like one of the weasels.but she didn’t.
“Draco” She said in a singsong tone as she waved a hand in front of his now almost red face.
“Merlin” he breathed out with the brightest smile he could make “Well in that case IwaswonderingifyouwouldliketgotoHogsmeadewithme” He said in the fasted way he could ready to repeat it before she chirped back a quick, “Yes! Of Course!”
“I-” Draco started to repeat, “Wait you understood that?” He spoke back with an inquisitive look.
“I mean if you don’t want me to say yes-” She teased with a sly grin.
“No,I mean yes,I like that you like me and that you’re going to go to Hogsmeade with me,” he affirmed in a rushed manner.
“Perfect!” She responded “How about we go clean you up then yea?”
“Right, that’ll be for the best,” he said with a small smile.
They shyly held hands the rest of the way walking to the prefects bathrooms and y/n helped clean up Draco. They finally talked with one another and Draco finally got the girl he was going after for five years.
Present Time
(:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅[̲̅:♡:]̲̅:̲̅:̲̅:̲̅)
“Fine fine alright” You sighed in defeat.
“Draco Malfoy your hair is THE most beautiful thing in this world.”
He had stop attacking you at this point and you two were in a criss cross position in front of each other, you were holding his face in both of your hands and the both of you were smiling like absolute idiots.
He looked at your with a grin that he was failing at trying to hide with a pointed expression.
You rolled your eyes and said “except for mine of course”
Draco Malfoy was by far the most dramatic person you’ve ever met in your life.
One day you were in a bookshop and told him that if he went to a muggle school he would be an spectacular theatre kid.Draco for some reason had taken that to great offense and went on saying how “his own bloody girlfriend doesn’t love him” and how “she thinks I’d be in some sort of theatrical arts like Pottah and his unruly ballet”
You honestly didn’t know if Draco was trying to be funny on purpose sometimes or if the things he said just flowed out like silk unlike his hair.
Now you sat under the big tree in the Malfoy Manor garden with Draco’s head on your lap, taking about how just because the conditioner is apple scented it doesn't make it any less bad for your hair.
A/N- hey lol, Anyways this is my first fic. I would really like any constructive criticism, anything you noticed off, or anything that you think needs improvements.I really haven't written anything non school related in a long time and I really want to get back into it :)
Also it might just be me but if any one gave a comment on my hair and it included “your hair smells good” I would just dies on spot.maybe that's just me lol.Lastly, if you didn’t know I based using a bunch of gel in your in a second year off of myself lol so let’s just say my hair was not the best.Anyways have a good night or day <3

Six Feet Apart
CarryOnCap’s Masterlist
Summary: Dean is fed up with a lot of things about the Coronavirus and safety guidelines, but he’s got a compelling reason to follow them. Sometimes it’s funny what a little faith can do.
Warnings: Obviously everything surrounding the ‘Rona, mentions of terminal illness, some angst, some feels but a positive ending
A/N: @rileynicole1967 requested a Dean x reader fic based on “Six Feet Apart” by Alec Benjamin. This is definitely not what you asked for because it took a weird turn, BUT it was very therapeutic for me to write and I still managed to give it the ending you asked for. So I appreciate the request more than you know :)
[IF you happen to be curious about the inspiration behind this: I’ve been in a rough place for quite some time-- hence my Tumblr absence. Not that the self-disclosure is really needed, but my grandma is in really bad shape with her cancer and I’ve been trying to make things work with a guy who very well could have been “The One” under non-’Rona circumstances. I’ve been caught in a terrible, anxiety-inducing middle between obviously wanting to date and spend time with a guy who is out in the world everyday, but only being able to do so much without risking my grandma’s health. Aaand kind of mine too. Stupid faulty meatsuit haha. Anyway. Life has been so stinking heavy but this helped a little.]
Keys.
Mask.
Wallet.
Phone.
It was routine now. Dean had gone through the process so many times that his body practically went on autopilot as he grabbed the items on his way out of the motel room he’d checked into late last night.
There were days he thought the guidelines were frustrating, inconvenient, and even a little pointless. He knew he’d probably get the virus at some point anyway and he’d made peace with that. Maybe he’d be able to fight it off just fine, maybe he wouldn’t. But the chances of that happening were like anything else in life. Even if the world had managed to come to an eerie halt, that didn’t mean it applied to people like him and Sam who still had work to do.
Although he knew he had everything he needed, he checked his pockets again just to be sure. If it were up to him, truthfully he wouldn’t even bother with the mask or the “social distancing” crap.
But it wasn’t just about him anymore. And he couldn’t afford to take any chances.
Oh, I miss you most at six feet apart when you’re
Right outside my window, but can’t ride inside my car
And it hurts to know just how lovely you are
And be too far away to hold, but close enough to break my heart
I miss your smile
Feels like miles
Six feet apart
Dean pulled into a worn concrete driveway in front of a modest white house. The front porch, which he’d become quite familiar with lately, contained two cast iron chairs and a matching table. He’d never been inside, couldn’t risk the possibility of bringing the virus into her home if he’d unknowingly come into contact with it. While he was constantly on the road chasing cases, she only left the house for treatments, appointments, and intermittent trips to the porch when he could make it back to visit.
He sighed heavily, putting the car in park before turning to glare at the offending bit of fabric on the leather seat beside him. He hated wearing that stupid mask. Hated the way the material trapped each breath, circulating the warm air right back to his face. He hated how stuffy and suffocating it felt. Sometimes it even made him feel a little claustrophobic.
But she’d sewn it herself and given it to him so he could stop using t-shirts, bandanas, and any other piece of clothing he could find in his trunk as a makeshift mask each time he came to see her. Sometimes he struggled to keep in mind what a thoughtful gesture it had been. That having to wear it might be annoying, but it really wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. And if a stupid piece of fabric had even a small chance of keeping them safe, then he could deal with it for a few hours, couldn’t he?
A few hours, he thought sourly. Nowadays they were lucky if they could even get that much time together. But he’d take what he could get.
Reluctantly, he grabbed the mask and looped the elastic bands around each ear. After fussing with the edges, trying in vain to make it fit comfortably, he let his head fall back against the seat in frustration. As he examined the space above him, sinking deeper into his ruminating thoughts, he began to wonder how much longer he could keep this up and if all of this was really worth it.
So far, so far, but so close
Like a star out in the cosmos
Can’t touch the beauty I see
That’s how it feels at six feet
It had been a while since the last time he’d been able to visit her. When the front door opened and two women emerged, he climbed out of the car and walked straight to his usual spot on the overgrown lawn. As he got closer and appraised her condition, he tried to conceal his reaction.
She looked rough. Despite the fuzzy robe she wore, he could tell how feeble her figure was beneath. Her movements were slow and deliberate, making him suspect she may have fallen again recently. He clenched his jaw, recalling how she’d been too weak to pick herself up last time and had remained on the floor until someone came to check on her the next morning.
With help from the other woman, who he assumed was a new caretaker, she settled into the cushions on one of the chairs. Her chest heaved and her eyes fell closed as she took a moment to recover from the exertion of her short walk. When her eyes finally fluttered open, they were a stark contrast against her sallow skin.
“Long time, no see,” she teased, her voice a hoarse whisper.
Dean nodded. “How’re you feeling today?”
“Can’t complain.”
In a way, he knew she was lying. He had a feeling she was having a rough day, but she was never one to complain. He had quickly learned that no matter what was going on in her life, she was the kind of person who worried about everyone else and put their well-being before her own. He wondered what kind of update the doctor had given her this time, but he was too afraid to ask.
“It’s so good to see you.”
Her gentle admission shook him from his thoughts. The edges of her eyes crinkled and he could just imagine the smile she wore beneath her mask.
Space and time are interwoven
Well, at least that’s what we’re told
When I was young, I was suspicious, but it’s true
Time sticks like glue
I feel so blue
Here missing you
So I think I’ll build a time machine and go back to a time
When we didn’t need to measure six feet on the ground
When I came around
That’s not allowed
I can’t go back now
He’d never really been the relationship type. He hadn’t been looking for anything when their paths had first crossed, but there was something about her that had captured his interest. The more they’d gotten to know one another, the more he learned just how much they had in common.
It had made him feel uneasy at first-- how easy she was for him to talk to. She rarely pressed him on anything and she had a way of making him feel comfortable even with the hardest conversations. They’d shared their life stories; their favorite memories, biggest letdowns, family dramas, and everything in between. After all of the monsters they’d each faced in their lives...this one was the deadliest and ugliest he’d ever had to face. And of all the people in the world who didn’t deserve to go through something like this, she topped the list.
Okay, sure, no one really deserved a death sentence. But didn’t it always make it worse that bad things always seemed to happen to good people?
Dean had beaten leviathans and reapers. He’d taken out loads of vampires, ghouls, and ghosts. He’d ganked more angel and demon douchebags than he could count. But when he had asked her to let him help-- when he’d mentioned what Cas could do or offered to work with Sam to find a spell that might heal her-- she politely declined. She had simply thanked him and explained that it wouldn’t be fair to everyone else fighting for their lives like she was. That her life was in no way more important than anyone else’s. She’d told Dean sometimes these things just happen and have a little faith, you never know.
Dean had of course tried to argue, but he couldn’t quite put into words just how special she was. That she didn’t deserve this and he’d give anything to change their circumstances. At one point he’d even considered tracking down a crossroads demon and making a deal to switch places with her, but he knew she wouldn’t have wanted that.
No matter how many times he tried to bring it up or how much he wished he could fight this one for her, there was nothing he could do to fight the monster slowly killing her from the inside out.
So, I miss you most at six feet apart when you’re
Right outside my window, but can’t ride inside my car
And it hurts to know just how lovely you are
And be too far away to hold, but close enough to break my heart
I miss your smile
Feels like miles
Six feet apart
It seemed like there was never enough time. They’d talked all afternoon and neither one of them were ready to say goodbye but, when she suddenly shivered, he knew it was time for him to leave. It wasn’t cold outside by any means, but it took a lot more to keep her warm these days.
He couldn’t help but linger a little longer, admiring her from where he still sat in the grass. Sometimes just being in her presence helped ease a little of the hopelessness he always seemed to grapple with. It was starting to take a toll on him-- not knowing if things would ever get better or if the world would ever return to some sense of normalcy.
What he wanted more than anything was to walk right up on the porch and wrap his arms around her. It didn’t make sense how much he ached to just be near her. He’d never admit it out loud, but it was almost physically painful how much he wanted to reach out and touch her-- to hug her, kiss her, or even see her smile without their stupid masks.
But she was barely holding on and he knew her body was fighting every moment of the day just to keep her alive.
He hated wearing his mask. He hated how he could be so close to her and still feel so far away. He hated not being able to hold her and he hated that there didn’t seem to be an end or a solution in sight for the state of the world at the moment. He hated that she was dying and there was nothing he could do about it. And he especially hated the fact that the universe had to have a pretty damn cruel sense of humor to let him meet someone like her in a time like this. Even though he was fed up with feeling like he was stuck in another one of Gabriel’s twisted, incessant pranks...the thought of walking away and not having her in his life at all was far worse.
So he took it one day at a time. He knew there was a chance he might get the virus at some point and usually he was ready to accept whatever cards fate dealt him. Maybe he’d be able to fight it off, maybe he wouldn’t. But she wouldn’t be able to. And he knew if he slipped up, if he somehow managed to pass it along, that that would be the end for her.
He hated a lot of things lately and he wasn’t sure if they’d ever really go away. But there wasn’t a doubt in his mind that every single inconvenience and moment of frustration was worth it for him to be able to spend time with her-- even six feet apart.
***
Dean was staring up at the ceiling, unable to fall back asleep. The nightmares didn’t come as often anymore but, when they did...well, they were no walk in the park. He let out a sharp breath, squeezing his eyes shut as he pushed the images of her sunken face from his mind.
The movement had jostled her, and he hugged her closer when she began to stir. He placed a gentle kiss on top of her head and she hummed softly as she nestled further into his chest.
When they were in the thick of it, it had been so hard to see a way out. To believe they’d be okay or ever have a shot at actually being together. To believe there would be an end to the virus or that there was any chance she could get better.
Sometimes those dark days, when all hope seemed lost, felt like nothing more than a distant nightmare. But Dean refused to let himself forget. Maybe it was morbid, but every moment with her felt a little bit sweeter when he reminded himself of how grim those days had been and of everything they’d had to overcome. When he remembered everything she’d had to endure.
It was honestly a miracle that he was lucky enough to hold her in his arms like this. Everyone had asked him on numerous occasions if he’d done something, but even he didn’t have an explanation. He really didn’t care whether it was faith or something supernatural or even just one of life’s unexplained mysteries-- all that mattered was that she was healthy and alive.
So he kept the memories of those days close and promised himself he’d never take the time he had with her for granted. They had made it through one of the darkest times in either of their lives and he had no doubt they’d face more in the future. But, with her by his side, he had faith they’d find a way to make it through those days too.
So far, so far, but so close
Like a star out in the cosmos
Can’t touch the beauty I see
That’s how it all feels to me
So far, so far, but so close
Like a star out in the cosmos
Can’t touch the beauty I see
That’s how it feels at six feet

Boomlord weird adventure
Chapter 8 what time is it?
It was early morning in the omnispace void. Boomwood had gotten to the kitchen to start brewing coffee as the footsteps of a yawning purple hair woman enter the room."morning Twilight."Twilight mearly gave him a wave before sitting down. Looked at her noticing the look on her face. To be honest she looked exhausted.'ah shit'he quickly poured a shot glass of the Cuban coffee and handed it to her. She stared at the coffee for a minute."I appreciate the gesture but I doubt this is going to do much for me."good Lord gave out a chuckle."Twilight trust me this is Cuban coffee any more than this and you'll be wired."He gave out a chuckle before Twilight downed the shot, unsurprisingly her face scrunched up. This was probably the most bitter thing she ever had."bleh! Why would you drink something so bitter!"Boomlord shrugged."honestly I only drink it for the caffeine. If it helps I think I have some orange juice in the fridge."Twilight just looked down rubbing her head . Not long after the other girls walked in each of them heading into the fridge grabbing various fruits mostly apples. Pinkie pie was the only one who grabbed something else, looks like she found the flan and was in heaven."oh my Celestia this tastes so good!"At least she wasn't breaking the fourth wall again.
2 After everyone ate they all headed to the living room again."ok girls this is it we are heading to the next world. Now before I go this mission is not meant to be dangerous however the world we're entering can be a bit chaotic so be prepared for anything."The rest of the girls nodded they likely had assumed as much from the previous conversations."so where are we going anyway"dash blurted out as boom pulled out his pen."yeah I'm with Dash partner id hate to go in blind."Aj took a step forward to make her point."we're going to a place called ooo I spent a lot of time there and it's the only place I can really say I have friends anymore...."booms voice got deep as a sorrowful look overtook his face for a minute. This was enough to make Applejack back off. Twilight in particular took a mental note of this.'guess friends are a touchy subject for him.' boom grabbed his notepad An drew another circle, in the center he wrote °adventure Time 1°as always the golden electrical ring formed with a blackened middle. Boomlord jumped into the portal and when he landed his feet were on solid ground. Solid green grassy ground. He surveyed the area around him noticing he was in a grassy clear field however the ends of what looks like old nuclear bombs stuck out overtaken by the grassy plains. The girls enter next each of them still in their same outfits however 4 of the girls had notable changes to them . Twilight and rarity each had a sword at their side. Twilight sword with a sleek and purple short sword with her cutie mark on the hilt. Rarity sword on the other hand looked as if it were made of blue crystal with a white metal hilt her cutie mark also on it. Fluttershy and rainbow Dash had also had the return of their wings which Dash took this opportunity to fly up into the air a bit doing a few loops and swirls."Hell yeah I missed this!"boom couldn't help but smile."Real fly girl up there."a few of them awkwardly smile."so where's our destination?"Twilight asked giving him a quick grin knowing that he's trying his best to make everyone feel better about being in a strange world."we're going to see princess bubblegum at the Candy Kingdom."and just like that he found himself lying on the ground being pinned by pinkie pie."DID YOU SAY CANDY KINGDOM! A KINGDOM MADE OF CANDY IS THIS PLACE PARADISE O.M.C O.M.C."Twilight practically had to pry pinky off of him ."yes the entire Kingdom from the trees to the ground is made of candy including the people."He started to brush himself off as pinky smile only widen."but please don't eat the Candy people or I will probably have to stop you"pinky reluctantly nodded.
3"rainbow do you mind taking an aerial view try to find the place that looks like it's surrounded by Pink cotton candy trees.... Well because it is surrounded by Pink cotton candy trees."boom called out before stopping looking at the ground a large Shadow now loomed over them. It was Spike. All the ponies turn to look back in both shock and horror. Spike mostly remain the same with one slight difference... He was absolutely Giant. His whole body in total was about the size of a two sorry house and his wings could probably cover all of them with ease."oh yeah I forgot dragons are huge here but at least he still looks different from them normally they're just Giant tube dragons with big ass butts."The ponies/girls stared for a moment but in silent agreement they chose not to address it not that Spike would mind he was too busy checking himself out."oh crap I'm HUGE you guys look so small from up here!" It was the most adorable giant grin in the world. Rainbow decided now was a good time to take him to the air as she being flapping her wings disappearing above the clouds. Surveying the land below she was able to make out what looks like pink trees and a large structure that looked somewhat like a castle."guess that must be what I'm looking for."she kept looking around noticing in One direction was a rather large tree that almost looks like it had Windows in it and in the opposite direction she noticed tall mountains made entirely of ice."heh heh heh what do we have here"a voice from nowhere stated in a malicious tone from behind her. Is she turned to look behind her she saw a giant monster with a bat like face and long blue limbs with crooked nails.'OH SHIT'at this point rainbow Dash started nose diving down towards her friends with the creature in pursuit who was maliciously chuckling the entire way down. The rest of the group saw the creature and the girls had various reactions. Applejack rarity and Twilight look like they were getting ready to fight with rarity and Twilight pulling out their swords. Fluttershy and Pinky had decided to stick near Spike who is now using his wings to shield them. Then there was boom standing out in the open as dash passed him and he just smiled. Apon seeing him the creature stopped a look of surprise on our face."hey Marceline it's been a while"the creature began to shrink taking on a human form she had pale white skin and incredibly long black hair which reached down to her feet a simple jacket and jeans and her ,guitar-axe strapef to her back and a nice big floopy hat which covered her in a shroud of darkness. She give out a wide smile revealing her fangs before wrapping her arms around boom giving him a hug."holy glob dude!your back it's been like 4 months!"he returned the embrace from his old friend as the rest of the girls started to calm down noticing that whatever that thing was it seemed friendly at least now it did."oh that's right."he turned to the girls and dragon."everyone this is my old friend Marceline... The vampire queen"a few of the girls jaw started to drop."your freinds with a literal blood sucking vampire?"Marceline shrugged at Twilight comment."actually it's just the color I'm after."Marceline started floating on her back around them."so boom what brings you and your new friends back to ooo."Boomlord got quiet."I found it Marcy.... I found the Rose fire and they're here because Twilight here"pointing at the slightly flustered purple pony girl."is the key to everything."Marceline stopped moving for a moment the words settling in her mind."oh we need to get to the Candy Kingdom right away then."then without word Marceline started floating off towards the direction of the Kingdom and boom followed along with the girls and the giant dragon...... Yeah that might be a problem.
4 After a few hours of walking they all managed to reach the candy kingdom with Spike deciding to hide in the trees to avoid unwanted attention. Pinkie pie look like she was about to go crazy or more crazy."o.m.c so m-much candy!"she was practically foaming at the mouth."look pinky just eat the sidewalk or something just please don't start eating random people I don't want to deal with any drama today especially because we need the princess's help."the pony started walking forward into the rather nice town and to boomlord credit every building and every person was made of candy, And many candies citizens passed by. Mr cupcake crunchy punch bowl guy."wow this is actually really fascinating I can't help but wonder what they're DNA is like how do candy people procreate do they need to breathe or eat its quite fascinating"Twilight then begin rambling about a whole bunch of science jargon that boom did not know but he found himself listening to every word she spoke it wasn't until arsenaline tapped his shoulder that he snapped out of his trance."I see you found a real good friend~"she whispered in a teasing tone."w-what no she's just um cool you know for someone who was a horse the other day."Marceline rolled her eyes."horse or not you always did have a thing for a Smart ones~."boom felt his blood pump. "Oh you're one to talk."Marceline then backed off she knew how far she could go before boom would made her regret it. After a while of walking the group then found themselves at the castle as a pink cared and pink skinned princess in a long pink dress noticed them."oh my! Boom you have returned and with.. many female companions huh"princess bubblegum gave a smirk."oh don't you start now too!" Boom was probably going to say more before pb gave him a warm hug."so I assume this has to do with the rose fire."bubblegum look down at him and while she kept a smile her face was full of worry."yeah Twilight here um it's kind of a long story."bubblegum nodded."it always is."about an hour had passed after this meeting and boom had explained to Marceline and bubblegum how we came to meet the girls and discover the fire leaving out the parts where he burned himself or threw a skillet at Twilight."interesting I'll probably have to run a few scans on Twilight then with her permission."Twilight nodded."good we'll start by using the rejuvenation tank to monitor your body and vitals while I conduct a few scans"boom notice that she was pointing to the large tank filled with water and knew that this meant that Twilight was going to have to strip down which he then took his cue to leave. "I'll be back soon gonna check on stuff."and before anyone could say anything he left the room.
(oh and before I forget I'll be opening asks for boomlord and Friends so if they appear in the story feel free to ask them a question ask box is officially open)

dance with somebody (ch. 16)
start from ch. 1 | back to ch. 15
When Dex steps into Chowder’s bedroom, his single knock on the open door no more than a nostalgic habit, these days, as opposed to a present requirement, he’s certainly not expecting to be faced with, well. With this.
“What’re you doing?”
Chowder looks up. He’s sitting cross-legged on the floor with a myriad of different colored post-it notes spread out around him. Dex crouches down, picking up a couple of the notes (yellow and pink, respectively) to skim through their contents. Louis, helped solve Halloween cupcake disaster, 2 points. Hops, volunteered to do dishes entire week, 6 points.
Dex raises both eyebrows towards Chowder. Chowder, meanwhile, is staring down at the colorful mess surrounding him with a decidedly troubled expression. He sighs.
“I’m figuring out my dibs.”
“With a points system?” Dex prompts. He’s not sure if he’s impressed or concerned. “Looks ambitious.”
“I just don’t want anyone to think that I’m being unfair,” Chowder explains glumly. He picks up a green post-it (Jader, gave up half his vanilla scone at breakfast, 1 point) and stares at it dejectedly. “Or that I don’t care about them. Oh no, what if I pick Jader, and then Joyo inevitably assumes that I hate him? I could never do that to Joyo."
“Dude,” Dex says. He’s trying very hard not to smile. “You don’t have to make a decision yet, you know? It’s not even Christmas.”
Chowder frowns.
“It's almost Christmas.”
“I suppose,” Dex agrees carefully. “Are you sure this isn’t just some big procrastination project? Got any big finals looming, hm?”
“Finals,” Chowder scoffs. “Are finals really more important than the precious feelings of our hardworking underclassmen?”
“Oh my God. What’s all this?”
Nursey strolls into the room without knocking. He places a kiss on top of Dex’s head and then plops himself down between Dex and Chowder, his hand lingering softly at Dex’s nape.
“Chowder is having a bit of a dibs crisis,” Dex fills him in.
“Oh, man. Hard same.” Nursey frowns. “I was dead set on giving mine to Ford. Of course Ollie and Wicks had to go and snag her, first.”
“She and Tango seem pretty happy up in the attic, though,” Dex points out. "And this way, you get to be hausmates with both of them this year."
“I suppose that's true," Nursey allows. Then he shrugs. "And I guess I’ve still got Louis. He’s let me borrow his good bluetooth speakers basically this whole semester, so. Might be an option."
“What?” Chowder exclaims. “No, wait, I might pick Louis. You two couldn't maybe give me some time to figure this out, before you stake your claims?"
“I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works, C,” Dex tells him gently.
“That’s definitely not how it works,” Nursey agrees, his grin playful yet his tone kind. “If there’s someone you have in mind, Chow, you should just go for it. You snooze, you lose."
Chowder whips his head around, aiming his wide, pleading eyes at Dex.
“You’re not considering Louis, too, are you?”
“Honestly? I wish I was considering anyone.” Dex sighs. “I would’ve gone with Whiskey, but obviously that’s out, and I feel like the Waffles have gotten this strange aversion to doing any of those dibs type favors for me since I became captain. I think they don’t want to act like they’re sucking up for the wrong reasons, or something.”
“Maybe give them some proper incentive?” Nursey suggests merrily. “If word got out that you’re, like, completely undecided about dibs, I’m sure both the Waffles and the Scones would be falling all over themselves to please you. Might be fun to watch.”
“Nah. I’ll figure it out eventually.” Dex shrugs. “Graduation is still really far away. I’m not gonna worry about it, yet.”
“It’s not that far away,” Chowder disagrees. He sounds serious. “Guys, it’s almost Christmas. That means we're graduating in less than six months.”
Dex very nearly flinches. Six months? How is that even possible?
“That can’t be right,” Nursey says slowly. His expression has turned uncharacteristically unchill. “Fuck. Why haven’t I applied to more grad programs, yet?”
“I need to start looking at job listings more seriously,” Chowder chimes in. He's looking down at his post-its with an expression that’s unusually difficult to read. “I guess I can't put it off forever."
“Hey,” Dex says. He’s trying his best to sound reasonable, despite his own inner turmoil. Suddenly, the feeling of Nursey’s hand that’s still resting at his nape seems more important than ever. “It’s not over yet. We’ve still got a whole semester.”
“Yeah,” Nursey says quickly. “Yeah, you’re right. And even after, it’s not like you guys are ever gonna be rid of me. Got your backs, remember?”
“That's true,” Chowder agrees quietly. He’s not smiling, Dex notes with no small amount of concern. Especially considering the fact that Chowder kind of hasn't smiled at all since the start of this conversation. His whole expression looks wrong, somehow, without that familiar spark of effortless joy. “It’s all happening so fast. I wish everything could slow down, just a bit.”
“We’re just gonna have to make every moment count,” Dex says firmly. Impulsively, he reaches for Chowder’s shoulder. “We’re here for you, man. You know that, right? We're always gonna look out for each other. Always."
“Of course. Yeah, of course.” Thankfully, that seems to do the trick – Chowders lips curl into a soft grin. "Ugh. I think I'm just gonna go through my notes for that UX design final one more time. Can't be more stressful than trying to choose a single Waffle for dibs."
"Or a Scone," Nursey reminds him brightly. "There's some good freshies, too, let's not forget."
"Says you, who's got your eye on Louis, too," Chowder points out with an amused roll of his eyes. "I may be panicking, Nurse, but I'm certainly not stupid."
"Ah, and here though myself completely subtle." Nursey grins. "Weren't you gonna study?"
"Actually, yes." Chowder gets to his feet, only to immediately pause. He narrows his eyes towards Nursey. "But if you lock down Louis while I'm stuck cramming user interface design techniques, you can expect some serious payback."
"Chill, man." Nursey's grin softens. "Look, I haven't actually decided on Louis yet, but if it would make you feel better we could have some sort of dibs treaty until the end of finals week. After that, it's anyone's game. Sounds good?"
"I suppose that’s fair." Chowder nods, and Dex is relieved to see the genuine smile he offers in return. "I think I left my books downstairs, so. See you guys later."
He pads out of his room, leaving Dex and Nursey alone in the sea of post-its.
Immediately, Nursey scoots a little closer to Dex.
"Just us, huh," he remarks, his tone a clear attempt at casual even though his smile indicates otherwise. "D'you wanna get lunch, or something?"
Dex hesitates.
"I've actually got some things I need to work on," he says carefully. "Could we maybe meet up later?"
"Sure. Of course." Nursey's response comes just a little bit too quickly. "That's chill, man. Whatever you need."
Dex studies his boyfriend's expression for a moment. It's been a concern of his, ever since he started setting aside time to work on his secret project, that Nursey might eventually start to realise there's something Dex isn't telling him. Dex has been monitoring carefully for any sign of doubt or confusion on Nursey's end, and this is the first time he thinks he's seeing exactly that in the subtle frown that's replaced Nursey's relaxed smile from a moment earlier. Obviously, it's the opposite of what Dex hopes to achieve with his secrecy.
Thankfully, the solution is very simple.
"Hey," Dex says quietly. "It's for you."
Nursey looks puzzled.
"I'm doing something for you," Dex clarifies. "That's why I've been a little busy, lately. It's going to be a surprise."
"Oh," Nursey says. He sounds surprised, already. "You're… Huh. What is it?"
Dex grins softly.
"A surprise. Duh."
Nursey raises a curious eyebrow.
"Don't I get a hint?"
"You really don't understand the concept of a surprise, do you?"
"Fine. Be that way." Nursey smiles a little excitedly, and Dex relaxes a bit. "I suppose I'll see you at dinner, then? The guys all want to go to Jerrys.”
"Actually, can we do dinner just you and me?" Dex asks quickly. "There's been so much team stuff, lately, and I've honestly kind of missed us. Tonight, I want to just... Order in. Preferably from someplace that makes a mean garlic bread. And after, we should put on Netflix and get in bed so I can cuddle you while you rant about the dubious plot changes in another one of those Austen adaptations."
Nursey blinks. For some reason, he's staring at Dex with a serious look in his eyes, one that's only vaguely familiar.
"What?" Dex asks, a little self-consciously. Was it something he said? “You like those period dramas. Don’t you?”
Nursey drops his gaze. He takes Dex's hands in his and holds them gently, almost like they're something delicate, like Dex is someone precious and worthy of protection.
"You're in love with me," he says quietly. "Aren't you?"
Oh, shit.
It's true, is the thing. And honestly, Nursey can’t have been unaware of it up until this moment. Really, he must have known. Dex might never have said it in so many words, and they’ve technically only dated for a few months, but it’s not like either of them are blind to the fact that they were dancing around this thing between them for several years, before. That goodnight kiss out on the porch at the very first kegster of the fall was never the beginning.
Dex briefly considers making some sort of joke to downplay this moment, if only to stop Nursey from being completely obnoxious about it in a minute or so. Except, the heavy look in Nursey’s eyes compels him to make a different choice.
"Yeah," Dex says, almost steadily. "I am in love with you. Quite hopelessly, actually."
Nursey’s breath hitches. He squeezes Dex hands tightly, and then he’s leaning over, capturing Dex’s lips in a fiercely desperate kiss that leaves Dex completely breathless. And if Dex didn’t feel it so completely, just then, in every achingly delicate touch of Nursey’s fingers against his cheek, his throat, all the way down his chest, he might’ve been a bit anxious about the fact that, technically, Nursey didn’t actually say it back.
As it is, Dex isn’t worried. If anything, he’s amused.
“You’re welcome,” he chirps gently after they break apart. “I guess I should be thankful you didn’t just tell me to chill, or whatever.”
“Fuck you, man,” Nursey breathes out, his voice breaking in a way Dex didn’t expect at all. “Also, just, shut up, okay? You already know that I’m writing literal fucking poetry about you, about your freckles and your eyes and your hips and your smile and your stupid fucking lips, okay. I’d like to think you’ve been able to safely assume that I’m more than casually into you.”
“I’d like to think that’s the impression I’ve given you, too,” Dex says slowly. He feels a little confused. Suddenly, he’s tempted to drag Nursey across campus to the wood workshop and just show him, right now, to expose everything that he’s dreaming and hoping and wishing. “Nursey. Hey, Nurse. Look at me.”
“No, you’re right.” Nursey takes a breath. He meets Dex’s eyes with a watery smile. “I don’t know, man. It just hits differently, when you say it out loud. Feels more real. It’s like you spoke it into existence.”
“Maybe something for your next poem,” Dex teases gently. This moment feels too fragile, somehow. He racks his brain for some way to break the tension. “Did you ever read me the one about my hips?”
“Um.” Quickly, Nursey looks away, his smile suddenly more of a bashful grin. Bingo. “Did I mention that one, just now?”
“You did.” Dex grins, too, taking in Nursey’s clearly flustered expression with interest. Oh, this is gonna be good. “Tonight, okay? Read it to me, tonight.”
“I don’t… It’s not my most coherent work, probably.” Nursey clears his throat, and Dex grins a little wider. It’s not often that he manages to make Nursey this unsettled. “I mean, I’ll see if I can find it.”
“Suppose I’ll just have to inspire a new one, if you don’t,” Dex suggests slyly.
“Actually,” Nursey breathes out, already moving to climb into Dex’s lap. “That sounds-”
“Oh my God!” Chowder exclaims from the still open door. “We’ve been over this! You both have your own rooms, okay, you’ve literally got zero excuses for getting your freak on right in the middle of-”
Dex presses his lips briefly against Nursey’s before scrambling to his feet, quickly slipping past Chow into the hallway.
“Sorry, Chowder!” he calls out over his shoulder as he takes the stairs two steps at a time. “Love you, Nurse! Bye!”
“That’s a fine, isn’t it?” Pips calls from the living room as Dex practically sprints past. “Hey, wait! Major fine! Pay the fuck up!”
Dex let’s the door to the Haus fall shut behind him. As he makes the now familiar trek across campus, he doesn’t stop smiling for a single moment.

Edward, an angst-ridden teenage daredevil, has it rough. Practically living on the streets, constantly worrying about his younger brother, and always looking over his shoulder has hardened him, giving him a reputation on the streets of Central City. Though, in truth, his bark is worse than his bite—something Winry finds out when a search for a rare car part lands her in the middle of illegal street racing. One look at the innocent blonde mechanic standing alone among the loud voices, revving engines, and squealing breaks, in a haze of exhaust and cigarette smoke has Ed ready to throw himself at her feet. But his sins are piling up, and he knows better than to try to involve an adorable auto shop princess in his mess. But Winry has secrets of her own, and despite all of his efforts, she’s impossible to resist.

Winry
Glancing at the GPS on my phone, I stop walking and look at the street sign. I lean forward a little, my feet shifting on the sidewalk, and glance down the dark alley. A shiver runs down my spine, but I take a deep breath. I bite my lip and look at the time. Past midnight. This is a reckless idea… but I can’t go home now, not when I’ve come this far.
“Okay,” I concede softly to myself, trying to calm my nerves. “I mean, this is where it says to turn.”
I step off the main road into the shadows, pulling my jacket closer to me. I hear something scurrying to my right, and I start to walk faster. Gripping my phone tight in my pocket, I continue to follow the twists and turns it gives me until I turn left onto Cardinal Street, which actually looks almost habitable, and hear engines revving nearby.
As I get closer, the blind panic starts to dissipate, only to be replaced by a new kind of anxiety.
“Paninya, what have you gotten me into?” I mutter to myself as I turn the last corner and—
Choke.
I’m suddenly lost in a haze of cigarette smoke. Coughing, I stumble to the side, only to find a tall, angry person, who pushes me away.
“Sorry,” I sputter.
Crap. This is not going well. I move away, and wave my hands around my face. The air clears enough to give me a decent view of the stretch of crowded road in the hazy streetlights.
Yep. This is definitely the place. Sinners’ Lane. (That’s not the official name of course, but…it might as well be.)
To my right, loud bass music thumps out of various car speakers. On top of those cars are couples in various positions of…intimacy. I feel a blush spread down my neck, and I turn the other way. To my left are the angry smoking guy and some other guys who are also smoking and look just as angry, though some of them seem to be holding cigarettes while some are holding what I can only assume are joints. Past them are clusters of girls dressed…scantily. Not necessarily distastefully, though, I just don’t think I’d ever be able to pull off a look like that. I squint at them… Is that a shirt or a bra?
The loud sound of an engine revving makes me jerk. I look past the girls to the main attraction.
A street race.
Two rumbling sports cars inch forward until they’re waved at to stop at the makeshift starting line. I see the two drivers throwing up rude hand gestures to each other, and one says something that makes the other one jerk his neck and rev his engine.
“Remember,” a spiky-haired guy wearing a fur-collar vest calls out, as he walks in between the cars. “It’s the first one to the second stop sign. Winner take all. Anything goes.”
He slaps his hands on the hoods of both cars and spins around, facing the drivers.
“You can go when my lady, Lust, gives you the signal. Good luck!”
He walks off to the side, and a lady with hair down to her knees walks out in his place. Her hips sway in ways that shouldn’t even be possible, and the way her chest is contained in that strapless dress defies the laws of gravity and…other physics.
“Play nice, boys,” she calls seductively, and the guys in the surrounding crowd whoop and whistle.
Then she whips out a green flag from…somewhere and the two cars fly past her. I barely have time to turn my head before they’ve roared by, heading for the end of the street. The Dodge wins by a split second. They slow and turn down opposite side streets, and I can only assume they’re driving back around to settle things.
But I didn’t really come here to watch. I’m on a mission.
“So…” I whisper under my breath. “If I were selling car parts to these guys, where would I be…”
I scan the street again, and…honestly, I have no clue. Looking back at the starting line, two new cars are setting up to go. The guy with the leather and fur looks like he’s in charge. I guess maybe he can help me.
Moving through the crowd, I inch past different groups of people, trying not to make eye contact with anyone, until I’m fairly close to where the guy was standing during the last race.
A loud bang! catches me off guard, and I jump. I look toward the sound to see the boss guy holding one of the potential racers by the front of his shirt. He’s got him pulled halfway out of his driver’s side window, and they’re practically nose to nose.
I feel my throat lock up as cold races down my spine.
“Don’t you ever try to short me again, little punk.”
“I’m s-sorry, Mr. Greed, sir,” the driver whimpers. “I swear, it’ll never happen again.”
“Damn right it won’t,” the boss guy snarls, “or you know what’ll happen.”
The driver visibly swallows, and I can almost see his fear like an aura surrounding him.
“Good.” The boss sets him down in his car and pats his shoulder. “Glad we understand each other.”
When he moves away, he turns toward me, and I freeze when his eyes meet mine. Or rather, his circle sunglasses. Who the hell wears circle sunglasses at night? Or at all?
He grins at me, and I take a step back, stumbling into someone.
“Hey! Watch it!”
I turn around and duck my head. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you.”
“Oh really?” a sarcastic voice snaps back. “Is that some sort of short joke!”
“What?” I blink and look up at the guy talking.
He’s a very angry blonde guy wearing a red leather jacket, black leather pants, and black combat boots. The leather gloves are a nice touch. His hair is tied up in a ponytail except for his bangs that fall in his eyes. Honestly, he’d be kind of cute if he weren’t vibrating with rage.
“You trying to say I’m some kind of pipsqueak!?”
“N-no,” I say softly, confusion muddling my brain. I mean, he’s taller than me—only by a few inches, but still. Plus, I don’t even know him. “I j-just…”
“You are a pipsqueak, Elric.” A guy with a dog collar walks up and throws his arm around him.
“WHAT?” Blonde Guy twists violently out of the guy’s embrace, looking murderous. “Get your hands off me, Dolcetto!”
“Give the girl a break, kid. She’s clearly lost.”
Oh no. Is it that obvious I don’t belong here?
“I’m not lost,” I protest, but my voice wavers, and I know I’m blushing.
The blonde guy looks at me again, and his face loses some of its anger. And I was right. He is kind of cute.
“No, seriously, what are you doing here, princess?” he asks, crossing his arms. “Aside from assaulting the locals.”
“Don’t call me ‘princess,” I snarl, “and I wasn’t assaulting–”
“Giving our guest a hard time, Edward?”
I feel a shadow fall over me, and I shiver at the smooth voice behind me.
“What? No. I was just talking to–”
The shadow moves closer, and the blonde guy drops his arms, his hands clenching into fists. I catch his eye, and it’s like I can hear him telling me to run for it. But I can’t move. There’s a moment of deafening noise as the cars behind us take off, and then the voice speaks again.
“Did you need something, Miss?”
Slowly, I turn to face him, the guy with the circle sunglasses, the one who is way scarier than I first realized.
“Um, n-no. I was just… I was just–”
“Are you cold?” he offers gently, his current demeanor nothing like the guy who threatened the driver a few seconds ago. “I can get you something warm to drink. My name is Greed. I’m sort of the boss around here.”
“No.” I shake my head, hugging myself tighter. “No, thank you, Mr.…Greed.”
I might be shivering, but it’s not from the cold.
“Just Greed is fine.”
“Oh, okay. Um. Actually, I was hoping to find someone who sells rare engine parts,” I tell him in a rush before softly adding, “I’m a mechanic.”
“Oh, a mechanic?” He grins broadly and holds out his arm, his other sliding around my shoulder. “Why didn’t you say so?”
He starts pulling me down the street, and I feel panic flood my veins.
“I know just the person to help you with–”
“I can help you.”
I jerk my head toward the voice only to find the blonde guy—Edward, I guess—watching us intently. I plead to him with my eyes to save me. I’m not sure if he’s really any more trustworthy than Greed, but something about him feels…safe.
Or safer, I guess.
“It’s no trouble, Elric,” Greed tells him, his voice thinning slightly. “I can take care of Miss…”
“Rockbell,” I supply without thinking.
I immediately want to rip my tongue out when I see Edward wince. I’m so dumb. Obviously, I shouldn’t tell any of these people my name.
“Miss Rockbell,” Greed finishes, his voice clearly sugar-coated now.
“But aren’t you busy with the races?” Edward cuts in quickly.
“Dolcetto and Martel–”
“I just saw three half-drunk guys with a ‘Vette pull up in the back. They look like the usual trust funders and ripe for the picking.”
“A ‘Vette you say?” Greed’s tune changes sharply. “Hmm. Still…Dolcetto and Martel should be able to handle a few–”
“And you know I know all the best dealers on this block,” Edward jumps in again. “It would make more sense for me to take her.”
Greed releases me slowly and looks between me and Edward before nodding.
“Aha. I think I see what’s going on here.” He grins again and waves me toward the blonde boy. “Go ahead, Elric. Show her the, uh, dealers. Just make sure you wrap up first.”
I blink at him confused before Edward mutters some profanity under his breath and shoves his gloved fingers through his bangs.
Did I say he was cute? Because he’s not. I’m not sure what happened, but all of the sudden, he turned…hot. Like really hot.
Oh my God. I don’t have time to be thinking about that right now.
Greed saunters off wearing a smirk, and I take a step toward my attractive would-be savior.
At least, I hope.
Edward
Shit. How did I end up here?
Not racing, like I want to be, but instead staring at a perfect blonde princess that Greed basically just told me to go fuck in an alley somewhere.
“What was he talking about?” she asks quietly.
“Huh?”
“What he said just now—Greed. What did he mean?”
I blink at her, and glance away in bewilderment, before looking back.
“What exactly are you referring to?” I return slowly, hoping her question doesn’t mean what I think it meant.
“About you ‘wrapping up first?’ What does that have to do with auto part dealers?”
I press my lips together, and reach up to rub the back of my neck. I mean, did she really not get he was referring to use having sex? Fuck. She really wound up in the wrong place tonight.
“Nothing,” I mutter when I realize she’s still waiting on an answer. “Just, um…ignore that.”
“Oh. Okay.” She nods, not quite meeting my eyes. “So, you were going to show me where to get engine parts?”
“Yeah. Follow me.”
I turn around and start down the sidewalk. I figure I’ll start with Donovan. If he doesn’t have what she needs, he’ll know who does. I pause at the corner of the alley and look over my shoulder, only the princess isn’t there.
“What the hell?” I hiss. “Where did she go?”
Weaving back through the crowd, I find her where I left her, shivering and looking around wildly.
“I told you to follow me,” I growl, grabbing her hand.
“What?” she gasps. “Oh!”
I pull her out of the way of some stumbling drunken assholes, pushing her against the wall and shielding her with my body.
“You okay?”
She licks her lips and looks anywhere but at my face.
“I’m fine,” she whispers finally, and it’s hard to ignore her flushed cheeks. “I didn’t see where you went, and I…”
“Don’t worry about it.”
I step back when they’ve moved off down the sidewalk and start to pull her after me again.
“Hey, Edward?” she calls, practically jogging to keep up with me.
“Yeah?”
“Is your hand, um, automail?”
I freeze mid-step and round on her again. “What of it? Is that a problem for you?”
“No,” she glares, and I’m almost surprised. The princess has more guts than I realized. “I was just curious. You don’t have to be a jerk about it.”
I wince, and then shake my head. I don’t have time to feel sorry for hurting some random girl’s feelings.
“Come on. I thought you needed auto parts.”
Without waiting for her to answer, I grab her hand again and take off. We reach Donovan’s without any more interruptions, but his lights are off, so I stop at the bottom of the stairs and tell her to wait while I go knock.
She nods, and I go up slowly, knocking on the cracked doorframe three times, and waiting. I hear the sound of bolts sliding back, and finally, the door cracks a few millimeters.
“Who is it?” a low voice asks.
“Tell Donovan it’s me,” I answer, leaning on the frame.
“Elric? I thought he told you to piss off. He won’t do business with the Devil’s Nesters anymore.”
“I’m not here for them,” I say quickly before the door shuts. “I have a new buyer looking for engine parts.”
“Name?”
“Rockbell.”
I hear the princess gasp, and I wave at her to shut up.
“Wait here.”
I sigh as the door clicks shut. After a few seconds, I jump over the stairs onto the street, landing in a crouch in front of the girl. She flinches in surprise, and I laugh silently.
“Don’t scare me like that,” she hisses. “What did he say?”
“I’m waiting to see. If Donovan will see you, you’ll probably find what you need.”
“Oh. Good.”
“You said your name was Rockbell?” I turn to her, and she tucks her hair behind her ear.
I instantly notice a string of piercings along the delicate curve. I’m tempted to touch them.
“Yes.” She nods.
“Is there a first name to go with that?”
“Well… I mean…”
“You know mine,” I remind her. “And if you don’t tell me, I’m going to have to keep calling you, ‘princess,’ all night.”
“Winry,” she tells me with a huff. “I’m Winry.”
“See, that wasn’t so hard.”
She opens her mouth to say something I can only expect will be sassy when the door opens and Donovan’s huge frame fills the entry.
“Come in, and make it quick.”
I lead us in, and he locks the door immediately. Winry stares at the five deadbolts and two chains with wide eyes, and I bite my lip. She’s fucking adorable.
“Don’t panic,” I say, as she squeezes my automail tighter. “He’s just paranoid.”
“I think you mean cautious,” Donovan booms as he moves past us to his living room. “Come this way.”
Winry sits close to me on the couch while Donovan takes up residence in a large chair. There’s no sign of whoever I spoke to at the door, but that’s not really a concern right now.
“What is it you need, Miss Rockbell?”
“I’m looking for this.”
She reaches into her jacket and pulls out a detailed design drawn on a thinning piece of graph paper.
Donovan takes it, and I watch his eyes squint with a frown.
“This is…hmm.” He studies the image closer. “What did you say you needed this for again?”
“I didn’t,” Winry answers softly. “But that shouldn’t matter, should it?”
She looks over at me, and I shrug one shoulder. I’m not curious about her reasons, and when I contact dealers for parts, they all know better than to ask me what I need them for. That probably has to do more with my relationship with the Devil’s Nest than my street cred, but either way.
“I suppose not,” he mutters gruffly, still scrutinizing the paper.
Eventually, he sets it down and turns to her. “That piece is very rare. Difficult to track down.”
“I know,” she murmurs. “That’s why I came here.”
“I can get it for you, but it’ll be a few days, and it won’t be cheap.”
“I can pay.”
“Edward, will you be running point on this?” Donovan looks at me before turning to Winry. “Or how should I expect to get it to you when I have it?”
“I, um…”
“I’ll take care of it,” I volunteer. “Just let me know when it’s in, and I’ll handle the exchange.”
“Fine.” The large man stands. “In total, the cost is two hundred. I require half now, and half after Ed delivers the part.”
“Two hundred cens?” her musical voice pipes up, and I shoot a look at Donavan, who is frowning deeply.
“Thousand,” I hiss at her.
“What?” she gasps.
“Two hundred thousand cens,” I clarify, hoping she catches on quickly.
“Right, um, okay.” Winry reaches into her jacket again, looking flustered. “I have… I have, um…”
Her hands are shaking as she pulls out a wrinkled envelope. I reach out and put my hand on hers, fully aware of Donovan’s eagle eyes on us.
“Do you have it?” I whisper, trying not to let her hear the dread in my voice.
Her eyes take on a sheen of tears, and I already know the answer.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck!
She doesn’t have the money, and Donovan will be pissed we wasted his time. Even more pissed at me because I knew better than to bring in a buyer who couldn’t pay.
Shit.
“Is there a problem?”
“Just give us a second,” I answer without taking my eyes off of her, trying not to let her see my panic. “How much do you need?”
“Thirty thousand,” she ekes out, glancing at Donovan and then back at me. “I get paid tomorrow, and I have the rest at home, I just didn’t know I needed that much at once. I–”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll cover the difference.”
It’ll suck but it’s way worse than the alternative.
She stares at me like I’ve grown a second head, but before I overthink it, I slide three bills out of my wallet and into her envelope.
“Edward–”
“Here you go.” I grab the envelope out of her frozen fingers and stand, handing it to him.
“Excellent.”
I stand there while he counts it, and then turn to collect Winry as he leads us to the door.
“Thank you for your business, Miss Rockbell.” He shakes her small hand in his large one before turning to me. “Edward, I’ll be in touch.”
“Until then.”
We duck out, and the door closes behind us.
“Now what?” Winry asks as we walk down the steps to the abandoned sidewalk. “Do we go back to the race?”
“No. Now, I go back to the race, and you go home to your castle.”
“I don’t live in a castle–”
“You do in comparison to this shithole,” I interrupt her harshly. “But that’s not even my point. You can’t come down here again. Ever.”
“But…then how am I supposed to get the part I need?”
Not by coming to the Lane.
“I’ll bring it to you.”
Somehow. My baby’s sitting on blocks at the Devil’s Nest garage. That thirty thousand I just gave her was supposed to be the last payment I needed to finish her body work. And since I spent tonight leading Winry around, I didn’t get any racing in, so Greed won’t be inclined to give me a cut of the profits. Usually I can make at least a hundred grand on a night like this. Plus, I told Al I’d go to the grocery store this week. We need bread and milk—milk, ew, I might forgo getting any of that—and I think the toilet paper is running low.
“You have a cell phone?”
“Um, of course.”
“Give me your number.”
She freezes, and I tilt my head at her, waiting.
“You want my number? Why?”
I roll my eyes slightly and then back to her. “So I can text you when your part comes in and we can meet somewhere?”
I watch her eyes close and her face turn pink.
“Right. I’m an idiot.” She shakes her head. “Here, give me your phone, and I’ll put it in.”
“Sorry. Battery’s dead.”
She blinks as if that’s an entirely foreign concept to her, which it probably is.
“Okay, then let me write it down.”
She reaches into her jacket again, and I wait.
“Oh. I forgot. I don’t have a pen or anything.” She meets my eyes again. “Um…”
“Just tell it to me,” I say, trying not to grin. She’s too adorable to be real.
“What?”
“Your number. Just tell me. I’ll remember it.”
“Are you sure? I bet I can, um–”
“You’re not going to find a pen around here if that’s what you were about to say. Seriously, just tell me the number.”
She exhales, and I’m temporarily stunned by the way her lips part.
“Okay then.”
She says it slowly, and then repeats it, giving me time to commit each digit to memory. After, I echo it back to her, just to be sure.
“Yeah. That’s it.”
“Excellent. I’ll text you when I have it.”
“Should you give me your number, so I know it’s you?”
“Will you remember it?”
She rolls her eyes, and I bite my cheek, so I won’t smile at her. Fuck, this girl is dangerous to my reputation. If Greed caught me smiling at a girl, he’d own me for life.
“I have my phone right here.” She pulls it out of her pocket and holds it out to me. “You can just save your number right now.”
I could, but…where’s the fun in that?
“That’s okay.” I wave her off. “Trust me, you’ll know it’s me.”
“For some reason, I don’t doubt that,” she mumbles. “Well, I guess this is goodbye then.”
“Do you know how to get home?”
She holds up her fancy cell phone. “It has GPS, so I think I’ll be okay.”
“Right.” I glance over my shoulder and then back at her. “Listen, go straight home. Don’t follow me back toward the race, and don’t wander around. Walk fast and try to stay in better lit areas if you can. This area isn’t safe, especially for pretty girls on their own.”
God, it’s a miracle she even made it here, now that I think about it. Especially with that huge amount of cash in her purse.
“You think I’m pretty?”
“What?” I frown at her. “No.”
She raises her eyebrows, and my hands clench into fists.
“You’re completely missing my point,” I growl. “This area is dangerous.”
“I can take care of myself.”
She tosses her head, and I feel some of my irritation fade. She is just so damn cute. And that’s the problem.
“Somehow, I don’t doubt that,” I confess gently, “but all the same you need to be careful.”
“I could text you when I get home,” she suggests jokingly, “but you’d have to give me your number for that.”
I’m half-tempted to take her up on it, but the last thing my piece-of-shit phone needs are texts from a girl to kill its crappy battery even faster. Fuck, I need to put a new phone on my list of Shit I Need But Can’t Afford.
“That’s okay. As long as you go straight there you should be fine.” I slide my hands into my jacket pockets and start toward the race.
“Okay. Bye.”
I nod at her over my shoulder just in time to see her turn around and start typing into her phone. I shake my head and take a left down the alley. When I make it back to Dolcetto, I feel a surge of guilt.
What if she gets lost? Or mugged? Or worse.
A sickening feeling spreads through my stomach, and I start to turn back.
“Edward, what happened to your pretty new friend?” I groan internally at Greed’s voice. “Did you two get the part she needed?”
“Yes,” I answer flatly, turning to face him.
“And did you get what you needed?”
“I didn’t fuck her, if that’s what you’re thinking.”
“Ah, but you wanted to.”
My jaw pops, and I tilt my head back to glare at him. He doesn’t need to know he’s a tiny bit right.
“There’s no point in denying it,” Solaris, or Lust, I guess, since we’re in public, sidles up to him, and slides under his arm. “I could practically smell the desire rolling off of you.”
“Leave her alone,” I snap. “Besides, it’s not like she’s coming back anyway.”
“Ouch.” Greed fakes a wince. “You struck out that bad?”
“Aw, let him be, Greed,” Lust smirks at me, resting her cheek against Greed’s fur collar. “Can’t you see he’s trying to be a gentleman?”
“Elric? A gentleman,” he scoffs with laughter. “Please.”
“Look, you made his face all red,” Lust purrs.
“I’m pretty sure I can find something better to be doing right now,” I mutter, turning away.
“Wait, Elric,” Greed calls me back, and I sigh because as much as I’m ready to get out of here, he’s sort of someone I can’t ignore.
“What now?”
“Tomorrow I expect you to actually race something. As short-fused as you are, you’re the best driver I can put behind a wheel. Tomorrow is the start of winter break for Central U, so I expect more of a turnout than tonight. Don’t miss it.”
I open my mouth to tell him I’m supposed to close tomorrow at the butcher shop where I work part time, but then I shut it. If I tell Sig I need to take off early to go to the grocery store, he’ll probably let me, even though he’ll also probably know I’m lying. Still, it should be fine unless his wife is around. I can never get a lie past her.
But I can’t worry about that right now.
“I’ll be here.”
“That’s what I like to hear,” Greed grins. “Now, go home to that brother of yours and get some sleep.”
He turns away, and I feel like I can breathe again. Getting mixed up with the Devil’s Nest was never something I planned on doing, but when you grow up on these streets you don’t have a lot of options. Still, I can hold my own better than most, and generally, I just keep my head down and do what I have to.
Someday, I’ll get out of here, and I’ll take Al with me. Until then, I just have to stay focused.
No distractions.

Louis's First
It was just another usual day for Louis. Wake up at six o'clock, drink his tea, go to class, pick up the girls from school, have lunch all together, and start his shift at Toys 'R' Us.
He genuinely liked working there. He loved kids, it was fun to be surrounded by toys, and they were quite respectful of his uni hours, so overall, it was quite a nice gig.
He was working on the floor today, greeting costumers, seeing if they need help with anything, trying to keep the shelves tidy. It was quite a slow day so since he was done with all his homework he took some time to play with the toys a bit.
"Okay, they've got to be here somewhere. Don't worry, we'll find you one just like it."
He lifted his head from where it was bowed over one of the pianos in the lower shelves, giving up on trying to get it to be straight and cracking his knuckles a bit.
The woman sounded pretty young and her voice was very nice so he started playing a random tune on the piano that was a bit more level with him (and sounded better too), just waiting for her to round the corner and spot him.
"Auntie, look, it's right there!"
The girl that passed right by him was absolutely divine. He'd never seen anyone as gorgeous as her and if the way his heart stuttered in his chest was any indication, his body seemed to agree. He straightened his shirt and ran his hands through his hair before turning around, ready to offer his help and maybe get her number after.
And if he pouted when she walked right past him with not the smallest reaction, nobody will ever know.
Louis's Second
He sat on a wooden bench as he waited in front of his youngest sisters' primary school. He was among parents and nannies, waiting for the bell to go off and the children to leave. His fingers tapped a random beat on his thigh while he hummed a melody that's been floating in his brain for a few minutes, trying to match some words to it.
So tell me, girl, if every time we touch
You get this kind of rush
He was about to take out his phone to write it down when a girl sat on the other side of the bench, taking out her headphones and putting them neatly into her bag.
But it wasn't just any girl.
It was the one he'd dubbed 'Future Mrs. Tommo', the girl from Toys 'R' Us. He refused to let her go this time, but he had no idea how to start the conversation.
That is, until she took out a familiar-looking binder, flipping it until she reached her desired page and started filling it out. It had been a mere thirty seconds before she started frowning.
He's never been so grateful to have chosen music as his minor.
"Are you in Charlton's class?"
The girl looked at him and he momentarily froze in place as his blue eyes met her (y/e/c) ones.
"Yeah, are you in his class?"
"Not anymore, I had him last year, though, he's a prick."
She huffed out a laugh and leaned back on the bench.
"Tell me about it, we've been talking about the Renaissance Era for two months and he still hasn't gotten to the interesting part."
"I thanked every deity imaginable that I got Natalie this year, I don't think I could do another year of that old man."
She turned to him and cocked her head.
"I've never heard of a 'Natalie' before."
"Natalie Dubois, she's a new teacher from France. Got a bit of a weird accent but she's a hell of a good teacher, and fun too, she gives us a bit more freedom, nothing like Charlton."
"What year are you?"
"Third, you?"
"Second."
He nodded and she tapped her pen against her binder.
"What're you studying?"
He was quite happy that she kept the conversation going.
"Drama major, music minor."
"Very artistic."
"I live to entertain. What about you?"
"Psychology major, music minor."
"Ooh, a brain doctor, I've always wondered if Psych majors could identify psychopaths from a single conversation."
She laughed at that and he felt his heart wanting to beat out of his chest. He wanted to record that sound so he could listen to it all the time. Use it as a ringtone, a melody for his next song, his alarm in the morning. He was positive he'd wake up in a much better mood if that's what brought him out of his slumber.
Unfortunately, he was interrupted before he could even ask for her number, or name, mind you, by the children's excited cheers.
Sooner than he would have liked, a little black-haired boy came running out and into her arms, Phoebe and Daisy only a couple steps behind.
"It was nice talking to you, I'll see you around!"
He could only wish her luck with that idiot teacher before she was gone and he had to care for his two little girls.
Louis's Third
The music room was quiet as he sat in front of the piano. He took out his notebook and started to play, following the notes messily scribbled on it.
I got a heart, and I got a soul, believe me, I will use them both
We made a start, be it a false one, I know
Baby I don't want to feel alone
He tried out, but something felt off. He tried a different note for the end, content with the way it sounded and scribbling it onto the notebook right after.
So kiss me where I lay down, my hands pressed to your cheeks
A long way from the playground
He frowned, changing a few notes here and there.
It sounded better, but there was still something missing.
"Try a key higher, it might sound better."
He heard her voice from the doorway, heart almost beating out of his chest for two entirely different reasons, though he chose to focus on the "I was startled" one instead of the "My dream girl is here" one.
He did as she told him though, and it did sound better.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
She looked entirely too pretty when she smiled. He wondered if the sun was really necessary given that she smiled bright enough to light up this galaxy and the next. He busied himself with writing the changes in his notebook while she went from table to table, searching up and down for something he wasn't aware of. He secretly hoped she wouldn't find it, just so he could stare at her for a bit longer.
"How're classes with Charlton going? Still a prick?"
"The day that man stops being a prick, angels will be falling from the sky."
He didn't see her fall, but he was pretty sure she was an angel.
"A-ha!"
He saw her lift a blue journal, the word 'Songs' beautifully calligraphed on it in gold. She put it back in her bag and approached him so she was standing right behind him, reading the words in his notebook.
He felt her shoulder grazing his and smelled her perfume. It was fruity and sweet. Peaches, maybe?
"That's a beautiful song, you're very talented."
He felt his cheeks heat up at the praise.
"Thanks."
He took a deep breath. This is it. He's gonna do it. He's gonna ask her out.
"Hey, I was wondering-"
"Shit!"
She got up in a flash and took her backpack from where she had put it down next to the seat.
"I'm gonna be late for my appointment but hold that thought 'til we meet again?"
She looked so sorry that he couldn't bear to tell her no.
Louis's Fourth
"I'm telling you, Niall, she's the most perfect girl to have ever walked this Earth."
He sighed as he faceplanted onto the couch, the blonde still strumming his guitar as if Louis wasn't having an existential crisis a mere six inched away from him.
"You don't even know her name."
"I'll just call her mine."
The punch that landed on his arm was deserved, he'll admit it.
"The way I'm seeing it, you just need to find out who she is and ask her out, it's really not that hard."
"But I don't know where to find her."
"Wrong, you know that she picks up her nephew at midday. A nephew that goes to the same school as your little sisters. Just figure out the kid's name, find the school records, and trace it back to her. Easy."
He lifted his head from the pillow and glared at Niall.
"That's illegal."
He shrugged.
"Most importantly, though, I'm awful with computers so we'd need to find someone to do it for us."
"I know a guy."
He nodded, that would be plan B, assuming they find a plan A first.
The door opened to the sound of Harry's amazing rendition of Juice, and Louis smiled unconsciously.
"Nialler, you home?"
"Living room!"
The brunette walked into the room and fist-bumped them, lifting Louis's legs so he could slide under them and sit.
"Why do you look like a kicked puppy?"
"I met the girl of my dreams but I don't know her name and have no idea how to contact her."
Unlike Niall, Harry was much more the romantic type. He believed in fate, love at first sight, and all that stupid shit in the books he read his sisters every night. It was no surprise when he gave him the most poetic, love-filled piece of advice Louis had ever heard.
"You just need to have faith, Lou. If she's the one for you then the universe will find a way to get your paths to cross again. Before you know it you'll be married with four kids and a cat, living on a little farm with a giant trampoline in your backyard."
"How did I end up with you two as my best friends? I either get a 'break into a primary school' or 'trust the universe', there is no in-between."
Niall laughed loudly and Harry patted his calves reassuringly before they heard the door open and their friends' voices echoing in the small flat.
"Hey, boys?"
"Living room!"
Liam came in with a couple of packs of beer, followed by Zayn and a third person whose footsteps he didn't recognize.
(Because yes, he'd memorized the sound of his friends' footsteps, sue him.)
"Lou, stop sulking, it's time to drink beers and be happy."
"I'm deeply sorry if my existential crisis is bothering you, Zayn, I'll try to suffer silently."
The laugh he heard made his breath hitch and his heart stutter in his chest.
He knew that laugh.
That laugh had been playing on a loop in Louis' brain for two weeks now.
He tried (read: failed miserably) to sit up naturally, though it looked a bit more forced than he wanted it to.
"Mystery Boy!"
She pointed at him with a gleeful expression on his face and if his soul hadn't left his body before, it sure had now.
"Hey."
Really? 'Hey'? That's the best he can do?
"I never caught your name."
She cocked her head to the side adorably, arm stretched over her knee from her place on the floor, leaning against the armchair.
"I never threw it."
It was stronger than him, he didn't even register his comment until she started laughing and he felt his cheeks burn up, the overwhelming sense of having fucked everything up taking over him.
"Drama majors, always clowning around."
He let out a relieved breath and smiled when she didn't seem to take any offense to it.
"You guys know each other?"
Liam, lovely Liam, looking like a confused puppy but bless his soul for asking because it made her speak and Louis loved hearing her voice so much, it sounded better than any music the world could provide.
"We've kind of met. I'm (Y/n), by the way."
(Y/n).
(Y/n), (Y/n), (Y/n).
(Y/n) Tomlinson.
That had a nice ring to it.
A really nice ring to it.
Mrs. (Y/n) Tomlinson.
Perfect.
"Usually, this is the part where you tell me your name. I can't keep referring to you as 'Mystery Boy'."
She giggled and his cheeks heated up again, though he didn't mind embarrassing himself if it earned him a laugh from her every time.
"I'm Louis. Tomlinson. Louis Tomlinson."
"Nice to formally meet you, Louis."
He smiled and thanked the sun, moon, and stars for this opportunity. Because really, there wasn't a better opportunity than this one.
She's here.
With him.
(And his friends, but who cares about them?)
And he finally knew her name.
He could ask her out.
No fear.
No time-clock.
No hesitation.
"Here's your juice, love."
"Thanks, babe."
She threw Zayn a kiss and he felt his heart break.
Oh no.
"Guys, I have to tell you about this girl I met."
Louis sat down properly on the couch so he had a clear view of Zayn's face.
"Ooh, gossip."
The younger boy swatted him before letting out a dreamy sigh.
"She's just- She's so pretty and kind, and her laugh, she has the most beautiful laugh I've ever heard. She's a psych major so she always has something interesting to say and her friends are so cool. She's... She's just perfect."
Louis's Fifth
And perfect she is.
Louis left the flat right after he realized that the girl he'd been pining over was the same girl Zayn had been seeing, muttering about homework and essays and studying or whatever.
Now here he was, working the register at Toys 'R' Us, his usually bright and genuine smile replaced by an incredibly awkward and forced one, trying not to let the heartbreak eat him alive.
"Tommo!"
His coworker came over to him.
"Switch with me, James asked to see you."
Great, and now he was probably gonna get sacked from the only job he ever liked.
He walked with a frown on his face to his manager's office and sat down on the chair, waiting for him to finish what looked like a very intense phone call about... mechanical kittens?
He hung up a couple of minutes later and turned to Louis, resting his elbows on the desk.
"Louis. Louis, Louis, Louis. D'you mind telling me why my best worker's been sulking all day?"
He shrunk down a bit on the chair, suddenly feeling very small. Toys 'R' Us is a magical place, workers are supposed to be happy all the time.
"Just... Stuff."
"It's okay to be sad, but we worry about you. I mean, some of our regular costumers asked if you were alright cause you weren't jumping and joking. Just tell me what's wrong so I can try to help."
He let out a breath and let his head fall onto the desk.
"I met this girl and she's amazing, and kind, and funny, and just overall perfect."
"So you're sulking because you met the love of your life?"
"No! I'm sulking because the love of my life is dating one of my best mates."
He froze for a while, definitely not expecting that.
"What?"
"Zayn's dating her. I found out yesterday."
Jame took a deep breath and got up from his chair so he could get closer to Louis.
"Oh no."
"Oh yes."
"Not a Jimmy Hug."
"Shut up, you deserve one right now, no matter how much you like to pretend you hate them."
When he came out of his boss's office, more relaxed and with a small smile on his face, he immediately spotted you next to the pianos.
He took his break at that moment and only returned when he saw you leave through his place in the alleyway right next to the parking lot.
Your First
You took a deep breath and tightened your grip on your nephew's hand, steeling yourself before entering the store.
"We have to get one with brown fur, just like Summer!"
You promised little Lucas that if he behaved at the doctor's you'd get him get a new plushie, a German Shepherd, just like your parents' dog.
"Okay, they've got to be here somewhere. Don't worry, we'll find you one just like it."
You looked up and down aisles, trying to find the plushies but not knowing where to look. You could hear someone playing the piano a couple of feet away and let yourself be lulled by the sound of the song, you'd always loved Tchaikovsky.
"Auntie, look, it's right there!"
Your nephew pointed at the shelves just on the other side of the piano (and the beautiful pianist standing in front of it). You let Lucas pull you towards the shelves and search carefully for the perfect plushie while you tried to not let the man get to you.
He was gorgeous. Like, model tier, plaster his face on your walls gorgeous.
And you were shy.
So you dragged the time out and mentally asked him to approach you, pouting when you realized he couldn't read your thoughts and your nephew was asking to leave.
Your Second
You speed-walked to the school, still riled up because of your class with bloody Charlton.
You wanted nothing more than to sit down on the bench, listen to your music, and people-watch until your nephew got out.
But you weren't expecting him to be there.
You were still too shy to approach him so you just took out your headphones and sat on the other side of the bench, taking out your binder and filling out a few things before purposely stopping somewhere and tapping your pen on the paper, pouting and wishing that he'd 'save you' from your boredom.
"Are you in Charlton's class?"
Bingpot!
You looked at him and were temporarily taken aback by just how blue his eyes were, but forced yourself to speak. You weren't gonna get anywhere by keeping quiet.
"Yeah, are you in his class?"
"Not anymore, I had him last year, though, he's a prick."
You huffed out a laugh and leaned back on the bench, trying to look nonchalant.
"Tell me about it, we've been talking about the Renaissance Era for two months and he still hasn't gotten to the interesting part."
"I thanked every deity imaginable that I got Natalie this year, I don't think I could do another year of that old man."
You turned to him and cocked your head.
"I've never heard of a 'Natalie' before."
That's a lie, you knew who she was, you'd even interacted with her.
"Natalie Dubois, she's a new teacher from France. Got a bit of a weird accent but she's a hell of a good teacher, and fun too, she gives us a bit more freedom, nothing like Charlton."
"What year are you?"
"Third, you?"
"Second."
He nodded and you tapped your pen against your binder.
"What're you studying?"
"Drama major, music minor."
"Very artistic."
"I live to entertain. What about you?"
"Psychology major, music minor."
"Oh, a brain doctor, I've always wondered if Psych majors could identify psychopaths from a single conversation."
You laughed at that. Usually, you hated when people were that shallow about your job but when he said it, it didn't sound shallow or mock-ish. It sounded like a legitimate concern, like those things you think of at three in the morning when you can't sleep.
You were interrupted by the school bell and cursed mentally to not have gotten here earlier so you could talk to him more. Your nephew came running towards you and two little girls followed, walking towards Louis. He looked so good with children clinging to him that you had to physically extract yourself from that situation before you said or did something embarrassing.
"It was nice talking to you, I'll see you around!"
Your Third
You walked to the music room, praying that your song notebook was left behind there. You don't know what you'd do without it. It has every single one of your creations there.
You heard someone play the piano and groaned. You were way too sleep-deprived to deal with human interaction.
But this wasn't just any human interaction now, was it? Because Mystery Boy was there.
(He's been dubbed Mystery Boy in your head since you have no idea what his actual name is.)
You stood in the doorway for a while, notebook be damned, just watching him play, then frown, then play again, and light up like a happy little puppy once he found the right melody. Until he reached a complicated part and couldn't find the right combination.
"Try a key higher, it might sound better."
He jumped a bit and you felt bad for scaring him, but the way he blushed after was cute. He didn't answer, just did as you advised and smiled once he found that it sounded like he wanted it to.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
You smiled and the blush on his face was entirely too adorable and you went from table to table, pretending you didn't remember exactly where you were sitting that morning just so you could spend a bit longer than necessary in his presence.
"How're classes with Charlton going? Still a prick?"
"The day that man stops being a prick, angels will be falling from the sky."
You couldn't stall anymore, it would just be awkward at this point.
"A-ha!"
You showed off your journal before putting it back in your bag and going down the stairs of the auditorium so you could stand right next to him.
Deciding to be subtle but a little more daring than usual, you stood next to him, shoulders grazing while you read the words on his journal.
He smelled heavenly, like cologne and deodorant, and something that had to be entirely him. You wanted to bury yourself in that scent.
"That's a beautiful song, you're very talented."
You'd never get tired of watching him blush.
"Thanks."
You heard him take a deep breath just as your eyes went to the clock and you remembered your doctor's appointment with Lucas, he had to get the second dose for his shots and you were the only one who could get him to quiet down.
"Hey, I was wondering-"
"Shit!"
You got up in a flash and took the backpack from where you had put it down next to the seat.
"I'm gonna be late for my appointment but hold that thought 'til we meet again?"
He answered a small yes and you dashed out of the room.
Your Fourth
You followed Zayn to his friend's flat off-campus. You had met him a couple of months ago through Gigi, your best friend. Those two had been flirting for ages and it honestly made you sick, but Zayn was an easy-going person and you got along great, so when you mentioned that you had plans of getting drunk alone tonight, he offered to take you to his friend's house so you could get drunk with some company.
You entered the flat with Zayn and who you now knew to be Liam, saying hello to the two men in the room and tilting your head in questioning at the man lying face down on the couch.
"Lou, stop sulking, it's time to drink beers and be happy."
"I'm deeply sorry if my existential crisis is bothering you, Zayn, I'll try to suffer silently."
You couldn't stop the laugh bubbling from your chest as you sat down next to the armrest.
He sat up way too quickly to be safe and you smiled brightly once you realized who it was.
"Mystery Boy!"
It was fate, it had to be. This was the universe's way of telling you that you belonged together.
"Hey."
You giggled at his awkward greeting.
"I never caught your name."
"I never threw it."
You started laughing at his sassiness. If you weren't completely smitten before you sure were now.
"Drama majors, always clowning around."
"You guys know each other?"
Liam asked and you jumped into an explanation.
"We've kind of met. I'm (Y/n), by the way."
He said nothing for a couple of seconds and you worried you were being too forward.
"Usually, this is the part where you tell me your name. I can't keep referring to you as 'Mystery Boy'."
He blushed again, he seemed to be doing that a lot and you wondered if that was as unusual for him as it was for you to be this confident.
"I'm Louis. Tomlinson. Louis Tomlinson."
(Y/n) Tomlinson.
That had a nice ring to it.
A really nice ring to it.
Mrs. (Y/n) Tomlinson.
Perfect.
"Nice to formally meet you, Louis."
He smiled and you wanted to yell at the sun to hide because it was stopping you from seeing the true brightness of Louis's eyes.
"Here's your juice, love."
"Thanks, babe."
You threw Zayn a kiss and he rolled his eyes, already used to the fact that you were kind of nickname-addicted and very endearing.
And also kind of drunk, which is why he brought you the juice.
On second thought, that might be why you were being this confident.
You thought everything was going well, but as suddenly as it started, the object of your affection was out the door, muttering about appointments, or homework, or something you didn't understand, but that sure made you frown for the rest of the evening.
Your Fifth
You walked into Toys 'R' Us for two reasons that day.
The first is to get your nephew a birthday present.
The second is to (hopefully) see Louis.
You wanted to talk to him, the way he left the flat was strange, so you took advantage of the fact that you needed to get something from the store to try and see him.
You saw him go to the back as soon as you got here and decided to wait a bit for him to come back, looking at everything slower than you needed even though you knew exactly what to get. After fifteen minutes, you were pretty sure he wasn't going to come back. Maybe his shift ended already?
You took your present and left the store, looking around to see if you found him, to no avail.
The One
You marched to the door with only one goal in mind: ask Louis Tomlinson out on a date. It's been a week of him ignoring you, running away as soon as he saw you, barely answering your greetings and you were more than done.
If he wanted to turn you down, then it at least he would do it to your face, none of this ghosting nonsense. You don't want to spend the rest of your life thinking what might have been if you'd just reached out.
So, you talked to Niall, who gave you Louis's address and his schedule. You knew he was home and he had no way to escape you. He was babysitting his sisters, after all, so there was no way he could just run away.
You rang the doorbell and nervously wrang your hands in front of you, taking deep breaths and mentally going over what you wanted to say.
"I'll be right there! No, Daisy!"
His voice rang through the door and you smiled fondly at the sound, imagining him taking care of his sisters did something to you for some reason.
"Hi, sorry for the-"
He froze when he saw you, eyes going wide and mouth hanging open.
"Hi."
You said, and that seemed to bring him out of his stupor.
"(Y/n)."
"Yep."
"(Y/n)."
It seemed like he couldn't quite believe you were here.
"That's my name. Don't wear it out, though."
He shook his head and started stuttering his way through a response, trying to ask what you were doing here, at his house.
"Um, Niall told me where you lived. I had something I wanted to ask you."
When he didn't answer, you went for it.
"So, um, you've kind of been avoiding me lately which is quite unfortunate because I happen to like you... a lot... and so I-"
"Does Zayn know that?"
You were cut off in the middle of your rant and tilted your head confusingly at him.
"What?"
"Does Zayn know you 'like me a lot'?"
He looked angry, jaw clenched shut and arms crossed in front of his chest, which was no help to the attraction you felt towards him, that shirt did wonders for his biceps.
"Why should Zayn know about it?"
"Well, he's your boyfriend after all."
Wait, what?
"Well if he's my boyfriend then I should probably let Gigi know he's cheating."
He seemed to blanch at that.
"Gigi."
"Yeah. Gigi. You know, the girl he's been pining over since the beginning of the semester, they got together officially two weeks ago."
Only his sisters' voices could be heard.
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"So, um... you and Zayn... you're not..."
"Together? No."
You laughed and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear nervously.
"Would you like to go on a date with me?"
You snapped your head up and grinned devilishly.
"I believe I asked you first."
He laughed and took a step forward.
"Then I will most certainly go out with you, as long as you let me pay. Take it as an apology for how stupid I was."
"I guess that could be arranged."
He was so close you could smell his cologne. Still so, so tasty. Still so, so wonderful.
"Do I have to wait until the end of our first date to kiss you?"
"I think you've done enough waiting already."
"I think so too."
And he kissed you.
And you were happy.
here it is babes! finally out!
i hope you liked it and if you do, don’t forget to comment, reblog, like and stuff
have a nice day/morning/afternoon/night/whatever

The Normalization of Toxicity
This will be my last post, and unless some miracle occurs within the greater Tumblr community, my last time on Tumblr in general. I’ve been thinking on giving some sort of final update for a while now just to get some things off my chest. This may be long and/or rambly. I will be linking some resources at the end of this post that have helped me tremendously over the past couple of years.
First off, I would like to express my utter disgust at what this website and by extension the fandom communities in general have devolved in to. I greatly underestimated just how out of control this beast had become. Before I got on Tumblr for the first time, I had heard the rumors but assumed they had been wildly exaggerated. How wrong I was, and yet I remained in denial during most of my time here, including when I was sharing information and speaking openly with people I should never have trusted. That is the only thing I feel I need to sincerely apologize to Lily for. Yes, what she has done and continues to do is reprehensible. Yes, everything I have shared about her is true and I have done my best to keep every bit of this sensitive information as accurate as possible. I absolutely should NOT have shared it with the people I did. All I succeeded in doing was feeding the beast, and contributing to the mental distortions and distresses that causes her to act the way she does in the first place. I did so with the best of intentions, albeit I was tainted with anger in such a way that I was denying at the time. I didn’t handle this well. I didn’t research the audience I was sharing this information with. That was a massive mistake which ended up producing the exact opposite results than what I hoped would happen (either Lily would see the pain she caused people and would be inspired to change for the better, or would be ousted from her position and be unable to hurt others).
I stupidly believed the people who claim to care about this sort of thing were being genuine. They aren’t. These self-described ‘hunters’, at their core, mainly care about fueling the drama they use as an escape from their real life. The worst of them use it as a means to cover up their own closet skeletons and stroke their own egos. In the short time I was regularly involved with all of this, I witnessed an increasing amount of instances that have left me completely dumbfounded. Open predators are defended by some, while the ones who claim to want “justice” do nothing that would actually bring any sort of justice. These people are quickly forgotten within the internet’s short attention span, and they are left to continue to do what they do. People bandwagon around them, reducing the impact these people leave and making it harder for their actual victims to be taken seriously. It’s difficult to know how much of the dishonesty is intentional, or a result of moderate to severe uncontrolled mental illness. In Lily’s case, most of the conversations surrounding her involve debating her political and entertainment opinions rather than things she’s done that actually warrant discussion, and even that has been handled incredibly poorly and has just fed into her self-defenses. I do not excuse myself from feeding into it as well.
On the topic of mental illness, I realized a hard truth during my hiatus. The things we use most as coping mechanisms are actually harming us. I quit social media entirely for a few months, and realized I really was addicted. I also realized the memes and self-deprecating jokes we think are cathartic and helpful are feeding into these negative feelings about ourselves. They reinforce the identities we’ve built around ourselves. “Being trash”, “depressed”, ect become a comfort zone because that is what becomes familiar. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not railing against social media in general, just how we’ve been using it. Think about the last time you scrolled your Facebook feed, or whatever you spend a lot of time scrolling on. You automatically relate to and maybe even laugh at self-deprecating images and jokes. “Hah, I’m so fucking depressed.” “Hah, I’m garbage.” “Hah, I have no friends.” “Hah, I want to kill myself.” Now think about when you see something positive. “Psh, that’s not me.” “I don’t deserve that.” “I’m actually ugly, but okay.” You push against anything positive because on a deep level, it scares you. It threatens the identity you’ve built around yourself, which is the thing that gives you a sense of grounding to the world around you and the role you play in it.
I was an absolute MESS when I first started challenging my own darkness. I hadn’t realized just how deep I had gone. I was horribly paranoid. Angry. Deeply depressed. My memory is still recovering from the several years of constant extreme stress I went through. I’m finally getting stable, which is genuinely the first time in my life I can say that. It felt fucking weird for a while, and it still does at times. It feels strange being comfortable in my own home. It feels uncertain but great that I’m at a point where I can afford my bills and still have some money left over. I’m finding interest in old and new hobbies. I have real goals for the future that I am actively working toward. I have a support system that cares about me enough to tell me the truth instead of enabling my bad habits and behaviors, and it took a long time for me to trust that they truly had my best intentions at heart.
It has been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever experienced. I had to break and completely reshape myself. It has taken daily maintenance, practice, research, ect and I have gotten lazy and fallen off the wagon multiple times, but I absolutely refuse to let myself go back to where I was. Never again. It has cost me quite a few people that I thought were friends, and most of my family. I’m still not quite where I want to be with myself, but I’m taking steps to get there and I feel like I’m making real progress.
I guess the point to this is to hopefully send out a message of hope to those of you who want to get out of the dark, and are ready to do so. There are ways to heal, and you deserve that, regardless of your past or what other people have said about you. It’s never too late and it’s okay to hurt and grieve during this process. It isn’t easy, it can take quite a while and a LOT of willpower, but it is doable.
I may check back at some point to see if anyone has any questions or would like advice, but I won’t be discussing Lily any longer, nor will I be resharing any information about her. It’s out there in multiple places if you really want to find it.

Summer Camp and (mostly) Lost
Click here to read the full fic on AO3
On the first day of classes, Katara was already looking forward to the first break. Someone had recognized her from the debut and people were hounding her between lectures. Even in the halls with more than a hundred students, she could hear her name whispered among the ducked heads. Inevitably, someone near her would check their phone and their head would whip around, settling on her for a second before typing a furious reply.
Armistice Day was two weeks into the first semester, which would at least give her a long weekend.
However, when she tried to find something to do, nothing seemed to come together. After taking off so much time, Sokka was adamant about keeping the shop open. Especially, as he reminded her, now that he had to save for a wedding.
Rohan was traveling with Thuy to Gaoling. The Beifongs - who had worked with Avatar Kuruk’s companions - had a daughter that was a professional fighter. On the one hand, it was assumed that such a wealthy and well-connected family like the Beifongs would be the ones to teach the new Avatar if they had the ability. On the other, Rohan knew it was because Thuy’s unusual upbringing was the perfect match for the fact that Toph Beifong was blind and undefeated.
“So does that mean you’re going to be Thuy’s airbending instructor?” Katara asked as she screen chatted with them while in bed. “I mean, you’re plenty unusual.”
“Unfortunately, Pop is pretty insistent that she have some sort of reasonable and level-headed teacher. So Jinora is doing it.” Rohan said.
“Has her firebending-”
“AZULA.” They interrupted her and Katara dropped her phone as she fumbled. Diving for it, she fell off her bed.
“Azula will teach her?” She asked, popping up onto her knees. Rohan nodded vigorously.
“Now, none of this is being confirmed in the press at the moment. But someone leaked our travel plans to the Fire Nation.” They answered.
“You’re going to the Fire Nation with her?”
“Yeah, I’m like her guide for a minute until she finds her group.”
“Hmmm.” Katara rested her head on her bead, staring up at the ceiling. It might be interesting to go travel the world with the Avatar. Maybe in another life.
“Hey, I gotta go, but chat soon? Unless you’ll be elbow deep in some guy’s guts.” Rohan said and Katara looked down at her scream, grimacing.
“I told you-”
“I know, I know. Class work first, cutting up people later.” Rohan flashed a quick grin and Katara sighed. “Say hi to your brother for me.”
They ended the call and Katara pushed herself up, stretching her arms over her head. She could study, go over her anatomy notes one more time, but her head just wasn’t in the right place. Laying back down on her bed, she pulled up the info page on Toph Beifong. She was only a little younger than Katara, but was a bit on the small side. Watching the recommended video, Katara guffawed loudly as she watched the woman launch a man twice her size into the stands.
This was exactly the thing Sokka was into. Hopefully as Queen of the Water Tribes, she could get the Avatar to introduce them.
Sighing, Katara dropped her phone onto her chest and put her hands over her eyes. She had to think about something happy.
Her thoughts for years had circled around being a physician. She wanted to go home to be a village doctor, spending her days assisting births and treating ailments. Katara fantasized about being a hero not for the destruction she wrought, but for ending the regular tuberculosis that plagued the tribes. Murdering viruses was much easier to swallow than the human body count that haunted her.
But now that was being taken away from her. Arnook had, for all of her attempts to avoid it, gotten her alone. He expounded on her the importance of her position, the necessary responsibility she needed to take for her people. She would be an icon of strength, of prosperity, and would be able to keep all three tribes safe.
Because Thuy was still vulnerable, and didn’t Katara want to save her from the same fate of losing her home and her mother?
Thuy was capable for her age. She had told Katara that Avatar Aang came to her first when she was at the heart of the swamp. A massive tree, that was simultaneously all of the trees in the swamp, was where she went to hide from her noisy family. It was there she meditated and found how the tree was connected to all things, and how she was connected to all things through it.
It was then that Aang found her, and taught six-year-old Thuy hilarious things to do with mud. It didn’t even strike her that she was earthbending.
Thuy explained that all of the elements were connected to each other, and that the Avatar was the heart of that forest. All she wanted, she said while they looked over the group of Avatar descendants, was that everyone would find their commonality and be able to celebrate their differences.
“Like how fire and water both flow so beautifully.” Thuy had added.
Katara rolled her eyes just as she had then.
There was a certain romantic aspect to fire and water. And steam could be pretty, but more often than not it just scalded people who got too close.
Her phone started to ring and Katara picked it up.
“Well speak of the hogmonkey.” She said as Zuko’s face showed up.
“You were talking about me?” He asked.
“Tangentially thinking about.” Katara said and then sat up. “Hey, I never got to ask, what did you think of Thuy?”
“She was nice. She said I looked like I belonged at the North Pole.” Zuko answered and Katara snorted.
“I think that brat is trying to set us up.” She said.
“Girls at that age are wild.”
“I wouldn’t know. I was getting ready to fight my way through Fire Nation territory.”
“And Azula was leading a hit squad against me so I think you’re going to need to take your trauma card elsewhere ma’am.”
Katara laughed, shaking her head.
“A little birdie told me that Azula is going to be teaching the Avatar firebending.” She said.
“Oh yeah? Did that little birdie also mention that they were the one to spill the beans to the press? I swear, Rohan can’t keep a secret to save their life.” Zuko said. Katara chuckled again and looked at Zuko’s face.
“If you had been a normal teenager, what do you think you would have done at her age?”
Zuko let out a breath and looked off into the distance as he thought.
“If I were normal, my mother would still be around. And.” He suddenly smiled and rubbed his eye with his hand before pushing his hair back. “Okay, so in my mother’s village, there’s this theater camp that runs in the summer.”
“No way.” Katara said, her voice breathy in astonishment. “Zuko, you are such a nerd!”
“I can’t help it! You saw my father, I inherited the drama!” He retorted and they both laughed.
When they settled, Katara lifted the phone high above her face.
“Have you ever gone to your mother’s village?” She asked. Zuko looked thoughtful, which made her feel better for asking.
“Once. After the war but before I was recalled.” He said. “It’s nice but homely and made me realize that I could never not be rich now.”
“You’re soft.”
“I’m so weak Katara you don’t even understand.”
As they laughed, Katara saw him smile at her.
“You have off on Armistice Day right?” He asked.
Katara nodded.
“Why don’t we go to Hira’a? The tourist season ends there really early and the people there don’t mind me so much since I’m Ursa’s son.”
“Are we going to go to summer camp?” She asked.
“Maybe we can tangentially think about it.” Zuko replied.
~
Katara focused on her schoolwork during the week prior to leaving. She didn’t want to have to think about tests or her first research paper the entire weekend. What did bother her was a lack of supplies for the trip. Zuko said there was a legend about the woods surrounding Hira’a and suggested they go hiking. At first she had agreed, but then Sokka informed her that she would need gear for such a trip.
Luckily, a person in her lab had his from a cross kingdom trip. As Katara collected some of the basic things, she shook off others. Her hike wasn’t going to be as intensive and she could just rely on her phone for directions.
Flying out, Katara was too excited to be nervous going through the airport. Her anxiety resurfaced only briefly when she made a layover in a larger Fire Nation city to board a very small charter plane.
There were a few other passengers on the plane and one little boy chattered endlessly for the entire trip. Katara, tired, smiled but looked out the window, trying to focus on something else.
The woods around Hira’a were thick and the canopy resembled broccoli florets. What was unexpected was the massive mountain and the few shining discs of the lakes.
Zuko met her as the plane landed, standing under a shaded area while the plane taxied to a stop. Suddenly shy, Katara held onto the straps of her borrowed backpack while she walked down the stairs.
“How was your trip?” Zuko asked as he met her on the strip.
“It was good only,” Katara looked up with a small frown. “Do you think it’ll rain?”
Zuko looked up at the sky as well. “The weather says no. And it tends to get overcast like this every day in the afternoon.”
They looked at each other and Zuko held out his hand.
“Come on,” He said. “Let’s get to the house.”
At the small luggage carousel, Zuko grabbed her suitcase and rolled it as they left the airport. Katara glanced up at the sky once more as they walked through the cool air curtain at the exit. It definitely felt like a storm to her.
To her surprise, they walked past the taxi stand.
“The house is close.” Zuko assured her, having seen her face. “And the villagers prefer that there not be a lot of cars. It disrupts the environment.”
The village was beautiful, even in the subdued light. The trees were a deep green, and bright flashes of fruit or clothing stood out against the leafy backdrop. There were roads, but people on bikes or motorbikes swarmed over them. Every once in a while, a delivery truck would rumble past, coughing out black smoke and Katara understood the facemasks.
“Ah, Prince Zuko!” Someone called out and they turned. A middle-aged man on a motorbike walked up to them, his flip-flops slapping his heels.
“Noren?” Zuko asked in disbelief.
“It’s good to see you, la!” Noren replied and Zuko, leaving Katara’s suitcase on the sidewalk, went to shake the man’s hand.
“I didn’t think I’d run into you.” Zuko replied and Noren waved a hand in front of his face.
“I heard the crown prince was in town, so I knew I had to come and see.” He said. Zuko laughed and rubbed the back of his head. He then stopped and looked back, waving Katara over.
“Katara, I’d like you to meet Noren. He runs the theater in town and was a friend of my mother.” Zuko said as Katara got closer. “Noren, this is my friend Katara from the South Pole.”
“Ursa was part of the theater troupe.” Noren said as he shook hands with Katara. He then slapped his thighs and looked at Zuko. “Now, dinner?”
Katara and Zuko made it to the house and Katara insisted on changing before they went to Noren’s house for dinner. His wife Noriko was a sweet lady who doted on Zuko, but more hilarious was their teenage daughter Kiyi. While she tried to hide it, Kiyi was clearly excited to see Zuko and showed him photos of her latest pictures on her phone.
Noren told Katara about Zuko’s visit to the village years ago. Trying to find some piece of his mother, Noren had offered his assistance in any way that he could. During that short time Zuko spent in the village, he got very close to Noren and his family, becoming like an older brother to Kiyi.
While they were at dinner, all three of them turned on Zuko when he spoke about his plans to take Katara into the woods. Noren didn’t like the woods at all and Noriko insisted that it was going to rain. Still, Noriko packed them both up with extra food and Noren gave them a ride in the dark on his bike.
Tired, full, and covered in sweat, Katara laid face down on her bed and fell asleep.
In the morning, Zuko packed their lunch while Katara reheated leftovers from Noriko to eat for breakfast. Zuko handed her a mug of coffee just as she served up the plates and they both looked over a map. The route Zuko plotted out was simple and they went over their supplies. Water, sunscreen, bug spray, and even a portable battery to recharge their phones should the worst happen. It was just a day hike, and the sun was even poking out behind some of the clouds, so it wouldn’t be too bad.
“Can you bend humidity?” Zuko asked as they shoulder their backpacks.
Katara rolled her eyes and started toward the door.
The trailhead was further from their rental than the airport, so Zuko called a taxi. Unsurprisingly, a young woman on a motorbike showed up and they piled on like they had when Noren had driven them home last night. What was nice was the moment when the driver handed them a face mask each, shaking her head at their clumsy application.
The humidity was disgusting and Katara was panting by the time they stopped at the park. Zuko peeled money out of his wallet and handed it to their driver, who saluted them before puttering off.
“Are your babysitters here?” Katara asked.
“No. Hira’a is small and they know when there’s a visitor. And again, I’m Ursa’s son.” Zuko said.
“Oh good, so if I drown in this air, it’s only you who can save me.”
“We’ll be fine.”
The rain started fifteen minutes into their walk.
There was no warning. It was clear one moment and the next a gray sheet had dropped all around them. The rain fell like bullets and they ran to the nearest tree with leaves sturdy enough to hold up against the onslaught. It took awhile and Katara felt the sting of the rain on her scalp.
“It’s just a burst.” Zuko said, rubbing his hair vigorously. “It’ll pass quickly.”
Right as he finished speaking, a crack of thunder went off like a shot.
“We need to get to shelter.” Katara said, her body tense as she prepared to run. Zuko sighed and nodded.
They moved blindly through the rain, stumbling over tree roots and exposed stone. Small rivers of muddy water rushed down the path and Katara worried about slipping. Finally irritated, she used her bending to repel the water from her. It was unnatural and made her feel weird, but she couldn’t even see three feet in front of her.
“That’s a lot of water you’re holding.” Zuko remarked as he stood in the dry spot with her.
“I can do better.” She said and moved sinuously around. The ball of negative space undulated, but burst as Katara thrust out her arms with a sharp breath. The rain around them stopped.
Turning her head, Katara saw Zuko staring at her, open mouthed.
“Like what you see?” Katara quipped.
Zuko nodded and Katara blushed, losing her smirk and feeling her ears burn. Suddenly aware of her attention, Zuko coughed and swung his backpack off a shoulder, pulling it to his front.
“Where did you learn to bend like that?” He asked as he unzipped the main pocket and rummaged through it.
“War.” Katara said simply. This was oddly easier to hold than the negative space, since she wasn’t trying to keep the water away from her. The fat droplets simply hung in their air like strands of glass beads.
“It didn’t do anything like that for me.” Zuko said. “All I got out of it was this face.”
“Zuko, your face is fine.” Katara remarked.
“You only say that because you like me.”
“I didn’t find you ugly before I liked you. It was just surprising.” Katara paused, listening to the heavy rain that fell around them. It was much more enjoyable now that she wasn’t getting drenched.
“The burn surprised me too.” Zuko said and held up his phone. “Here we go.”
Katara walked over to him, pushing the rain out of her way. The fat drops burst against her hand the same way boba pearls would against her tongue.
“How did it happen?”
“The burn? After my grandfather died, my father insisted that my uncle step down since my cousin had died. My uncle is older and had no heir, whereas my father had two children and was young. My uncle refused and the war started. I defended my uncle and my father punished me.” Zuko explained as he pulled up a map of the woods. He didn’t look at her as he spoke and Katara stared at his burned eye.
“Zuko…” She murmured and lightly touched his face. Wherever Zuko went while telling the story, he certainly wasn’t with her and her touch shocked him. Jolting back, he surprised Katara, who fell with a yelp. She lost her hold on the rain and it, plus everything held up on top, dumped on them, soaking them instantly.
Zuko went to her and picked her up, running with her in his arms.
“I saw a cave.” He yelled over the sound of the rain. Katara just held onto him, feeling the wet soak into her skin.
When Zuko dipped into the cave - which was only moderately drier than the open - Katara used her bending to dry their clothes. Zuko found windblown debris and made a scant fire, again shaking out his hair.
“Sorry.” Katara said softly.
“It’s fine. It was an accident.” Zuko replied with a weak smile. “The only downside is, I dropped my phone and it’s fried.”
“Okay, so that is bad.” Katara said and then brightened. “Wait mine is in my-” She stopped as she reached into her back pocket. Slowly pulling out her phone, she stared dumbly at the shattered screen.
“But we do have the map!” Zuko said and went to his pack. He pulled out the map and sat down to open it over his lap.
“That sure is a map.” Katara said as she sat down next to him.
“I know these are elevation lines, but…” Zuko tapped the map.
“You don’t know where we are.”
“Not a clue.”
“And we can’t call for help.”
“No.”
“So what do we do?” Katara asked. The thunder and lightning was short lived so at least now she could breathe.
“Wanna makeout?” Zuko replied. Katara scoffed and then, seeing his grin, started to laugh.
“When the rain stops, we can try to find our way back to the path.” Zuko said and put his arm around Katara’s shoulders. “For now, let’s just hang here and rest.”
The rain lasted for nearly an hour and Katara forced Zuko to wait until the air felt right to her before leaving. As they walked out into the forest, nothing looked familiar. Having peered through heavy rain, the shimmering brilliance of wet leaves was disorienting. Zuko kept the map out, turning it in his hands before picking a direction.
“Zuko?” Katara asked cautiously and Zuko looked up from the map.
“Yes?”
“Why did you even go back if your father burned you?”
Zuko’s thoughtful face was nuanced, as Katara now saw. He looked pained, but in a way that made Katara think he was going to tell her bad news.
“My uncle and I believe that my father wanted me to refuse to return. That was always an option you see. I could renounce my claim to the throne and stay with my uncle in Ba Sing Se. But if I did that, Azula would inherit.” Zuko shook his head. “And I don’t want to live in a world where Azula is a political force.”
“But does that make you happy?” Katara asked.
“The future makes me happy. Knowing that I’ll be able to do the things I want when I’m the Fire Lord.” Zuko answered.
“But that might be decades away!”
“But it will happen. And my father can’t really do much harm since he knows I’ll oppose him.”
“You made a really brave choice Zuko.”
Stepping over a fallen log, Zuko took Katara’s hand and helped her over. As she hopped onto the ground, he held onto her.
“Oh, I don’t think I’m all that brave.” He said softly. This pained look was more internal; something that hurt him alone.
He then patted her hand before releasing it and they started off again.
“Do you think I’m making the right choice?” Katara continued. “To be the Queen of the Water Tribes?”
“Well what does being queen mean to you?” Zuko asked.
“No more war.”
“Then I think you’re at least giving it an honest go.”
“But I could do so much more for my people if I was a doctor.” Katara replied.
“Really? Because what do you think will happen when Arnook dies?” Zuko questioned.
“What do you mean?”
“Yue was his heir, right? And not even a proper heir; she was going to have to be married so some guy could be the King of the North Pole.”
“And?”
“My kingdom went to war over the prospect of there not being an heir to inherit. If Arnook were to die without someone clearly next in line, I can tell you war is exactly what will happen.”
“No, my father wouldn’t let that happen.”
“It might not have anything to do with your father. Or it’ll happen with or without him. The South Pole might want to keep their independence, same as the Swamp Tribe, but Arnook has made it clear that the North Pole wants unification. War would happen regardless.”
“And you just know this to be true?”
Zuko gave her a look and Katara threw up her arms.
“Why does this have to depend on me?” She asked. Zuko shrugged.
“Circumstances of birth.” He said nonchalantly. Katara lowered her arms, having them fall loose and slapping the sides of her legs.
“Spirits, is it really just that?”
Zuko walked up to her and rubbed her arms.
“Even something so mundane as when you were born can change everything. I mean,” Zuko paused and huffed out a laugh. “If Thuy had been born a moment earlier then she wouldn’t even be the Avatar.”
“I don’t want my whole life plotted out just because of when and where I was born.” Katara said.
“Okay, so what’s one thing, within reason, that you want that you can get while stuck with these choices?” Zuko asked.
“I want to be with you.” She blurted.
When Zuko blushed, his skin turned yet another shade of red that didn’t match any part of his scar. He gripped her arms for a moment before suddenly releasing her and walking away.
“Zuko?” Katara called.
Zuko whirled around and pointed at her.
“You wanted to go on a date.” He said fiercely.
“Yes?”
“Let’s go on a date.”
“We’re sorta lost right now.”
“Not now.” Zuko rubbed his hands on his pants and looked down for a second. “After midterms. A proper date.”
Katara laughed, nodding.
“Okay. But how are we gonna get out of here?” She replied.
“I don’t-” Zuko started but stopped as a call went through the woods.
“Zuuuuuukoooooo?” A woman yelled.
“Is that Noriko?” Katara asked. Zuko chuckled and took her hand. Jogging, but watching out for roots, they moved in the direction of the calls. Noren, Noriko, and Kiyi all were shouting from in front of them.
When they finally broke the treeline, the family was standing, each one holding an umbrella.
“Ay! There they are!” Kiyi shouted.
“Ah, thank goodness!” Noriko said and fanned herself.
As they all gathered, she swatted Zuko’s arm.
“Why didn’t you listen to me, boy?” She asked and Zuko laughed, rubbing where she had hit him.
“Mom! You can’t just hit the prince!” Kiyi said.
“When the rain came, Noriko was really worried about you and insisted that I drive out. When you weren’t at the trailhead, she knew you were lost.” Noren explained.
“Tourists always get lost.” Kiyi added.
“The prince isn’t a tourist.” Noriko said sharply. “He’s just not as familiar with these woods.”
“Well, we were lost and I’m really thankful you came out here.” Zuko said. “I’ll make sure to listen to you better, Auntie.” He leaned in and hugged Noriko, making her blush.
“Dad borrowed our neighbors van so we can take you back.” Kiyi said. As she looked at Zuko and Katara, she shook her head.
“It must be nice to be a waterbender.” She remarked.
“They are very handy to keep around.” Zuko agreed. Katara glared at him as he chuckled.
“I will put you in ice.” She hissed. Zuko didn’t reply, but took her hand as they all started to walk to the trailhead. His hand was warm and dry, which made Katara aware of the cool dampness that lingered on her skin. But she wasn’t cold. At least, not with him.

nipnops
welp assuming you mean nipples
makes me wonder…first time you saw the Loki shirtless hmmm
just a lil lil somethin, enjoy!

Communal showers are never a good idea.
Like. Ever.
You’re fairly certain Tony just likes to have them so that he can create drama between pining coworkers, but you’ve sworn you’ll never use them. Those are reserved for sweaty super-soldiers, gods with long hair, and agents who wear bulletproof vests all day long.
But when the water in your dinky little apartment gets shut off with no more than a post-it on the door saying “until further notice,” you figure they’ll have to do.
You opt for a morning shower; hopefully less people, and then you can start each day fresh, right?
Wrong.
Arms filled with towels and products and soap, you’re greeted by a half-naked Bucky Barnes and nearly slip in your flip flops.
“That one’s open,” he smiles, jabbing a thumb at a stall behind him. “And be quick about it, unless you wanna see everything Thor has to offer, f’you know what I mean.”
“Th-thanks.” Keeping your head down isn’t as inconspicuous as you hoped. “Thanks for the heads up, too.”
Shuffling to the empty stall, you dump your things and set to work, glad you wore a swimsuit and trying to keep from glancing around too much, just in case other people didn’t.
Sure enough, you’re halfway through scrubbing down and Thor walks in, stripping down to…ah. Nothing.
Literally nothing.
Oh good gravy, the amount of people you know who would kill to be in your spot.
Averting your gaze and going back to your shampoo, you make the decision to never do this again, just use a friends—then an entire squadron of agents walk in, weapons in hand.
Oh.
Escorts, apparently, to the fuming man in the middle of their little group.
“Just hose me down in my cage,” you hear him hissing, followed by a clanking of metal against the floor. “Is this supposed to humanise me, letting me wash myself?”
No big deal, but the god who threatened your life just a couple weeks ago is barely two stalls away from where you’re showering.
You speed up, awkwardly hopping around the little tiled area to rinse off as quick as possible.
“This is darling, all of you coming to watch…” Loki’s voice is smooth and sharp as ever, crooning at his entourage of armed agents. “You expect me wash myself while wearing these?”
No one answers, but you pause and hear another clank of metal—the handcuffs, no doubt.
He sighs and you can tell he’s stretching, a low groan rumbling through the bathroom. “Ah…much better. Look at you all, waiting here for me. Expecting a show, are we?”
You can’t help but roll your eyes, shutting off the water and hurrying to wrap yourself in a towel.
“We’ll shoot you.” Someone finally answers him. “Watch it. You’re only here ‘cause Stark didn’t want you to get lice or some shit, so hurry up.”
“Appealing to my humanity. How precious of him.”
The sound of rustling leather floats into your stall as you pack up your products and secure the towel around your chest, grabbing your change of clothes and hurrying out towards the door.
“Sorry, excuse me, sorry, sorry,” you mumble, trying to keep your head down as you wind around the agents guarding the doors, clutching your towel even tighter when you pass the stall he’s in. “Sorry, just tryna get out…”
“Oh, hello again.”
“Damn it.”
Luckily this time you’re surrounded armed guards; you plaster on an unamused smile and turn around.
“Not today, Loki, c’mon.” You take a breath, ready to tell him you’re not his toy, leave me alone—stopping short when your brain processes what your eyes are seeing.
Modesty must be taboo on Asgard.
His hands are clasped in front of him—thank god—hiding something from view as he smiles at you.
…smiles and covers his junk with both hands, cocking his head to one side like some curious little puppy as you stare.
He hadn’t gotten far on his shower. His hair is only wet, no suds or anything in it yet, and you fight back a gulp when you realise he’s right: it does humanise him, in the strangest, most wrong way.
The water rushing onto his back, dripping onto his forehead while he stares right back, head tilted to one side with that awful little smile, it is strangely human. You’d never thought about the fact that even super villains would probably need to shower—duh.
For a split second the stupid image of Loki, this psychotic god, leaning over a sink and brushing his teeth flashes through your mind.
Loki laughs.
“Yes,” he hums, and a pair of boxers thankfully materialises over his hips as he moves his hands to grab the little bottle of hotel soap he’d been given, pouring a bit into his hands. “What else did you expect?”
Next thing you know his hands are gliding, slipping, sliding over his skin, long fingers moving with each dip of his abdomen, working the soap into a slow lather over his shoulders and down his toned arms.
“It’s alright.” He grins.
Snap out of it.
“You can watch.”
Those hands slip down past his boxers, running over incredibly sculpted thighs, but your gaze snaps up to meet his cool blue one.
“N-no, thanks,” you choke out—the last thing you need is this guy thinking that you’re attracted to him.
He has a pretty deep scar curving just above his left hipbone.
Not that you’re looking.
“Next time, let’s say I get to watch, hm?”
His words haven’t even processed fully before one of the agents cocks their handgun, stepping in front of you. “Don’t even think about it, Loki.”
“Oh, but I already am,” he purrs, eyes raking over your towelled form.
“I’m-I’m leaving,” you stutter, backing out the doorway. “You’re sick, you know that? Sick, Loki, sick.”
The smile doesn’t waver.
Holding your towel tighter around you, you turn on your heel and rush out the door, not looking back.
That image, the god who nearly killed you, showering, naked, and dripping with water, will be ingrained in your mind for a very long time.
And that image of you, wrapped in a towel and…running away from him?
That’ll be ingrained in Loki’s mind for just as long.

Tipsy
pt. i. pt. ii. pt. iii.
April 2nd, 2022. 22:31 PM. Seoul.
Apart from being aesthetically pleasing for photography, high-rise balconies with nothing but the night sky and light breeze for the company have always been a place of peace for Yeri. Somewhere to gather all of her thoughts and contemplate her next move, whatever that may be. Several times throughout her career, she’s stood atop a balcony, looked out over the landscape surrounding her, and tried to put everything around her into perspective. The view alone is a big part of why she bought this apartment for herself after it became clear she couldn’t stay with her parents any longer. That and it’s close to the studio where most of her time is spent nowadays.
The wine glass placed on the table beside her has been empty for the past hour, not that it matters. The bitter taste still lingers heavily on her lips as if she’d only just gulped it down. An empty bottle sits discarded on the kitchen counter of her apartment. As of late, those bottles have been piling up more and more to where her mother has grown concerned with the amount of alcohol she’s been consuming whenever she calls over to check on her. However, if it helps with getting a good night’s rest and blocks out the lingering thoughts of self-doubt that threaten to turn her into an insomniac, that’s all that matters.
Falling asleep as the sun rises used to be perfectly fine when there were several managers around and people to make sure she was on-time to different events no matter what. But, she no longer has that luxury with just one manager who barely even checks in with her anymore. A lot has changed in the last few months since the split of Red Velvet, and yet, Yeri still feels like compared to her other former members, she has achieved nothing at all.
Joohyun has turned herself into a Mother Teresa type for plants the last she heard and is enjoying the simple life. Joy is acting again and appearing on billboards throughout the city for some cosmetic brand that is likely paying her way too much. Wendy has begun the process of kick-starting her career in America, which will no doubt end up being a success. Seulgi, well, she’s probably the only one of the group who truly understands how lost Yeri feels, but even she is preparing to debut solo.
Whilst everyone moves forward, she can’t help but feel stuck in place. Despite the leap outside of her comfort zone after leaving SM, the creative freedom she so desperately was seeking for years is not the kind she assumed she’d have once becoming a producer and songwriter for an exciting independent label.
“The artists don’t believe a former girl-group member with such little experience can give them the hit song their career desperately needs.” The words float through her mind once more. A constant alarm within her that triggers a deep sense of hopelessness whenever they appear in her thoughts.
A harsher breeze blows her flowing hair across her face, blocking her from pondering on the darkness inside of her head for too long. Probably for the best. It never ends well when she lets her insecurities get the better of her. The cold air sends a shiver down her spine and threatens to infiltrate her body with the flu if she doesn’t step back into the warmth of her home soon, which she does immediately.
Like usual, her hands drift back to the empty wine bottle, sullen to find the contents missing but mentally refusing to believe that she is the one who has consumed it entirely. Light background noise stemming from the television is the only sound audible once the doors to the balcony are closed. A re-run of a drama that Yeri has tried to binge-watch three times now, every time her intoxicated brain has prevented her from picking up on the storyline.
Her back pocket on her jeans holding her phone which is vibrating through the material. Someone is calling. Twisting her arm to grab it, her fingers almost lose their grip and drop the device which would no doubt have smashed it against the hard flooring. However, she catches it before disaster strikes and answers the call all in one motion.
Had she gotten the chance to check who it was that was on the other end of the line, she may not have wished to speak to them. But no, she has no choice. She heaves a deep sigh before putting the phone to her ear, immediately regretting how close she pressed it against her head.
“Hey! Yeri! Hello? Are you there?”
“Wendy. I’m here. You don’t need to shout, you know?”
A short laugh can be barely heard before Wendy once again bursts Yeri’s eardrums.
“I’m not shouting! There’s just an echo in my bedroom. Anyway, that’s not important, I have something to tell you!”
“If this is about the place that sells muffins that are also doughnuts again, I don’t want to hear it. I know they’re the best thing you’ve ever had but if I can’t taste them then what’s the point in telling me about it?” Yeri fires back. In Wendy’s words “heavenly food mash-ups that get the Seungwan approval,” is frankly wearing her patience thin.
“No, silly! I just woke up, I haven’t eaten yet, but I got some good news. Are you ready for it?”
“I’m practically on the edge of my seat.”
That’s the first honest thing Yeri has said to Wendy in weeks during these phone calls that have become a bit of a habit. Her tipsy state has made sitting like a normal human being relatively difficult, it seems.
“Well, prepare to be blown off it. The label finally got back to me about including the song you wrote for me on my album, they want it to be a bonus track, isn’t that amazing?”
It takes Yeri a moment to recall what Wendy is talking about. The closest her hands have gotten to completing a full song lately was a poem she wrote on a napkin whilst out for breakfast with a mean hangover. However, it suddenly clicks when Wendy hums the melody, and Yeri realizes she has made a big, huge, major error.
“Wait, Wendy. You can’t use that song! I don’t want it on your album!” She practically screeches and this time it’s Wendy’s turn to feel a sharp pain in her ears.
“Why? You were so proud of it and you know I love it too, I’ve already recorded and submitted it, I’m not sure they’ll let me take it back now.”
A throbbing sensation settles itself dead center in Yeri’s forehead. There’s absolutely no way of getting out of this one alive. Either Wendy will kill her, or… even worse…
“It’s fine, ignore me. It’s your song Wendy, I’m sure the album will be amazing but I really need to go.”
Without waiting for Wendy to tell her goodbye, Yeri has already hung up on her and is quickly scrambling to find the right contact hoping to be able to stop what could be a disaster waiting to blow up. The phone rings for several moments before finally a robotic voice reads the age-old script of “this number is unavailable, please try again later.”
For the next thirty minutes, Yeri calls and calls, desperately hoping that on at least one of these occasions she’ll finally hear anything other than a dead end. Pacing the floor of her apartment, she deeply regrets drinking all of her wine earlier. A nice glug would go down well right now to stop her entire body from shaking.
Just as she’s about to give up and try to sleep this awful situation away, her phone finally rings and there in bold letters lies the person she’s been aiming to speak to. Seulgi.
“Hey, Yeri. I have a bunch of missed calls, what’s going on? Are you okay?”
The sincere, worried tone to Seulgi’s voice only makes Yeri feel even worse about what she’s about to request of the person she’s been relying on heavily these last few months to help her through the slump she’s fallen into.
“Hey, yeah, I’m fine. Sorry, about all the calls I just really need a favor from you.”
“You called me 216 times for a favor?”
Yeri pulls her phone away to check the number for herself, shocked that it’s even possible to call someone that amount of times in such a short period. But there it is, clear as day.
“Um… Yeah. It’s kind of important, you see.”
It isn’t. It’s just a stupid mistake that’s all her fault that she now needs to hope Seulgi will bail her out of without her finding out the real reason behind her request.
“Okay, what’s up? You’re worrying me, kid.”
“Well, you know Beautiful Love Lost.”
“Oh, yeah, I was just listening to the final version, funnily enough. The company loves it I even heard some people talking about how they regret letting you go.”
Things could not get any worse, Yeri thinks.
“Well, I need you to delete it, please.”
Silence is all that follows her words for a few seconds until finally Seulgi releases a deep exhale.
“Look, Yeri. I know you’ve been kind of down lately with things not working out at the label. But once this gets released, they’ll see that you’re the most talented person they have there. I promise you, you don’t need to doubt yourself.”
Things did get worse.
“It’s not that, I just think it’s too personal, I don’t want you to release it.” A lie, the biggest lie she’s ever told to Seulgi.
“I don’t understand… You were happy for me to have this and now… you’re not?”
“Yes, exactly. Now I’m not. I don’t want people to read too much into it and think they know me.”
She doesn’t speak, but Yeri can tell that Seulgi is taking in everything she’s saying to her and trying her best to digest it all. Even to her own ears, the words don’t quite make sense, nor do they feel truthful. Seulgi has always had a way of reading between the lines and Yeri knows she’s doing exactly that now, she knows that Seulgi knows this isn’t the real reason she doesn’t want her to release the song. However, she surprisingly doesn’t question it.
“Fine, I won’t use it. But you owe me another song and fast. The album is due out on the 16th but I have four more days to resubmit anything I’m not happy with.”
“Yes. You know you’re my favorite person, right Seul?”
“Sure kid,” The doubt clear in her tone. “But I mean it. Four days or I can’t do anything for you. I’ll have to use one of the SM producer’s songs.”
“I will, I promise.”
They say their goodbyes to one another with Yeri breathing a deep sigh of relief she had been holding during the entire call. However, the anxiety rises in her chest once more with the realization that Seulgi, despite her stubbornness on the subject of Wendy, will probably listen to her solo project even if it’s just to be overly and falsely critical.
Her mind goes into overdrive with worry about just how Seulgi will react. Will she bring her death slowly? Or will she simply ignore her existence as she has done with the rest of their former members?
Before the fear consumes her completely, however, several messages from Wendy appear in the notification bar of her phone.
00:13 AM [Wendy]
It’s fine Yeri, I won’t use the song if you don’t want me to. I know this is personal for you.
I hope you release it one day instead. I miss hearing you sing.
Don’t forget though, the album is out on the 15th. You better listen to it!
The only feeling Yeri is capable of at this moment is relief, however, had she took the chance to pay attention to what Wendy had said, she’d realize that another disaster was still steaming ahead on two different tracks ready to collide on the same day as each other for her two friends.

Part IV of Down the Rabbit Hole for the lovely @lumanae, even though they’re currently drowning the Merlin fandom. *grins* Sometimes distractions are needed, right?
Wirt had heard a lot of stories about college, but somehow, he still wasn’t prepared for one of his roommate’s crazy friends to smuggle a hatchet into their dorm room.
(Previous) Also on FF and the AO3.
-|-
Wirt knew Danny wasn’t in the washroom, but he stepped inside and looked in every remotely feasible spot anyway, including the medicine cabinet that sat above the toilet which would be hard pressed to hold a small child.
He just…. He didn’t know what else to do. There wasn’t anywhere else to go. It’s not like Danny could have crawled out the tiny window, and he definitely hadn’t slipped past Wirt and out into the hallway. It was like he’d gotten sucked into the same black hole as most of Wirt’s socks, except obviously that didn’t exist, but—
Wirt pulled out his phone and started to type a message to Jazz, but how could he tell her he’d lost her brother? He certainly couldn’t explain it. He had no idea where Danny was. Or how he’d gotten there, wherever there was.
Wirt half-hoped Danny would text Jazz and Jazz would text him, but he never heard anything, and he couldn’t find the words to say anything about this to Jazz. He’d find Danny first. Then, if Danny hadn’t already told Jazz, he could pretend this had never happened.
He could get a proper explanation from Toby after he figured out what the heck had happened to Danny.
Wirt locked the room behind him and set off at a quick walk, looking around and weaving past anyone he saw without slowing. Danny couldn’t have gone that far. If he had somehow slipped past him—
Maybe this was a prank. Danny liked pranks. And Jazz had as good as warned him not to leave Danny by himself.
Except Danny was gone, disappearing as easily and completely as the ghosts he had apparently grown up surrounded by, and Wirt couldn’t see a sign of him anywhere.
He did, however, find Wendy.
Sitting cross-legged under a tree in the shade.
Apparently doing nothing except enjoying a cup of coffee.
Wirt slowed to a stop in front of her. “Hey,” he said, though he already had her attention since she was looking up at him with a smile. “Have you, um, seen Jazz’s brother anywhere?”
“Danny? Never met him.” Wendy rose to her feet in one smooth movement. Wirt rather envied her gracefulness; he certainly couldn’t do that, at least not in the shape he was in now. “Jazz has a psych exam today, though. You won’t see her till it’s over.”
“No, I…know that. She’s out now, anyway, but still busy.” Probably. Maybe Danny had texted Jazz to get her to text him, and she just hadn’t because she was catching up with some other friends of hers after the exam. She had to have other friends, right? They could have ambushed her right after she’d texted him and Danny. “What about Toby? Have you seen him?”
“Should I have?”
Wirt bit his lip. “I just saw him and Claire.”
“Claire’s visiting?”
So Wendy didn’t know either. Not that that meant much. Claire’s visit might’ve been unexpected. Or maybe Toby had told both of them and they’d been too busy to listen? He could believe that of himself more than so Wendy, who had a surprisingly good memory. At least compared to him, who was hard pressed to remember what he’d had for lunch the day before. Or what day of the week it was. Or what he’d been doing five seconds before, when things got really crazy.
Wirt just nodded. “Yeah. She came to help with costumes for Toby’s play. Do you know when it is?”
Wendy raised her eyebrows. “Since when was Toby in a play?”
“He’s in drama….” Wirt didn’t add isn’t he? but he was pretty sure Wendy knew it was there.
“Uh huh.” Wendy sounded like she didn’t believe it, but what other explanation was there? If it was cosplay, Wirt definitely wasn’t familiar with the source material, and he couldn’t think of what else it could be. No one went around in a getup like that just for the heck of it. And it’s not like Toby would think he needed to lie about making a cosplay for something. He already knew Wirt thought he was weird and didn’t judge him for it. He thought that was funny.
For that matter, so did Wendy and Jazz.
It was one of the reasons Wirt was so convinced they were involved in some giant conspiracy to troll him. Because they’d kill themselves laughing over it. They’d find it hilarious, and they knew he’d be laughing in the end, too. Assuming he got to the end of whatever this was.
And assuming he could find Danny.
Seriously, how he could have lost Danny?
Maybe he was in on all of this, too. Maybe—
“Earth to Wirt,” Wendy said, waving a hand in front of his face. “Did you hear me?”
“Um…no? Sorry.”
“I wanted to know if Toby’s talked to you yet.”
“About what?” It couldn’t be the play if Wendy hadn’t heard of it.
Wendy rolled her eyes. “Please tell me you’re just playing being clueless or you will die if we reach an apocalyptic situation.”
“Uh…pretend I was living under a rock and fill me in?”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought,” Wendy muttered. Louder, “Something’s up. You know that, right?”
Was she finally admitting that they were playing a massive prank on him? Good. It had taken long enough. Wirt nodded, and Wendy relaxed. “Great. Then you’ll understand why I’m absolutely certain that Toby’s not actually in drama?”
Or not.
“Uh….”
“Seriously, this isn’t a game. College might not kill you, but there’s stuff out there that will if you’re not careful.”
The hatchet in his dorm room could technically kill him, but Wirt was pretty sure Wendy would just dismiss that if he brought it up. Or nag him about his nonexistent self-defence skills, since he hadn’t signed up for a class despite her not-so-subtle suggestions.
Wirt glanced around, but no one was close enough to overhear their conversation. That was probably Wendy’s plan. He met her eyes again, seeing no trace of a smile behind them. “You’re my friend,” she said, “and I don’t want to lose you.”
She might lose him as a friend if she kept on like this. He could only be expected to put up with so much, right? If she really believed this, maybe she needed to talk to someone. Someone who could actually help her. Which wouldn’t be him. He had zero training in that area. He’d think Jazz would be ideal if she weren’t encouraging this. Whatever this was.
“Okay, look,” Wirt said, trying to get a handle on this situation again, “if you want to be serious for a moment, why don’t you just tell me why you’re so wrapped up in all of this? Why you think I’m wrapped up in all of this?”
Anger and hurt flashed across Wendy’s face before she schooled her expression again, and Wirt knew she felt that was uncalled for. “Because I’m not stupid,” she said, her tone carefully even, “and because this isn’t my first rodeo. And because whatever you want to pretend, that Unknown of yours isn’t just a story. You wouldn’t care about all of this so much if it were, and I don’t need Jazz to tell me that.”
“You’re back on that again?”
Wendy frowned. “Fine. Keep pretending. But you can’t ignore the truth forever, Wirt. You have to know that. And even if you think it’s just to humour me, it’d be nice if you played along and prepared yourself for the day you can’t.” She pulled a small notepad out of her pocket and held it out. “Dipper transcribed some relevant spells. At least take a look at them before you throw it out.”
Wirt knew better than to ask if she was kidding. He pocketed the notepad without looking at it, and Wendy turned away without saying goodbye. He felt like a fool, but what was he supposed to do with that? If she was delusional, telling her the Unknown was real wasn’t going to help matters.
And if she wasn’t delusional….
He didn’t want to think about what it would mean if she wasn’t delusional.
He didn’t want to think that there might be more out there than what he’d faced in the Unknown, that that experience hadn’t been a fluke, that finding out Jazz had grown up hunting ghosts wasn’t going to be the strangest thing he discovered about his friends.
He didn’t want to lose the control he’d have if it turned out the Unknown was only a tiny piece in everything that was unknown.
And now he felt horrible for what he’d done to Wendy.
Sighing, Wirt pulled out his phone and dialled Toby’s number. If he could at least find out more about this play while he looked for Danny, it would prove that the world wasn’t going crazy.
XXXXXX
Toby didn’t answer.
Wirt actually walked into the drama building, poking his head into any room that didn’t have an ongoing class, and found nothing. He even tried looking around education, in case the rehearsals were in that building instead, and he couldn’t find so much as a poster advertising a play—or at least not one that would require fanciful armour.
Danny, of course, never turned up anywhere.
Wirt circled back and checked the food court, thinking Danny had probably found it and bought himself a snack, but no matter how he scanned the shifting crowd of people, he couldn’t convince himself that Danny was there.
Why hadn’t Jazz given him Danny’s number? That would have made finding him so much easier. He should have asked for it, but it hadn’t occurred to him that they’d get separated when he’d been asked to spend time with Danny.
Maybe this was just one of Danny’s practical jokes. Jazz had said he was a joker. Wirt couldn’t really think of any other way to explain his vanishing act.
Although, considering where he had disappeared from, Wirt wasn’t sure even being some kind of magician-in-training would explain Danny’s disappearance. It’s not like he happened to be in the one dorm room that had a secret passage hidden somewhere in the bathroom. There was no trick to it. And he couldn’t imagine how Danny had gotten past him, even though he must have.
Wirt couldn’t remember which building Jazz’s psych class was in, so he couldn’t see if Danny had gone to meet her there. Not that that would help him much, since Danny and Jazz would probably be long gone if they had met up, but he was getting desperate, and Jazz hadn’t texted him to ask why he’d ditched Danny—or whatever story Danny might’ve told her about what happened. He did check his dorm room one more time—in the vain hope that Danny would be hiding in there, maybe sitting on his bed with a big grin on his face, waiting for Wirt to come back and realize Danny had never left—and then went to Jazz’s. He rang the buzzer.
“Yes?”
Wendy. “Um, it’s me.”
“Danny’s not here, Wirt. Neither is Jazz. Do you still want to come up?”
“Uh, no, thanks.” He wasn’t ready to face her yet. He figured he’d read whatever Dipper counted as spells before talking to her again. Granted, knowing Wendy, she’d just do a phenomenal job of pretending the conversation had never happened, and he’d feel like even more of a fool.
“Good luck with the search, then.”
Now he really felt like an idiot. Wirt headed back to campus, not even sure where he should look next.
He walked through the food court again, standing on his tiptoes in the hopes of spying Danny among the shifting crowd of students, and eventually gave up. He checked his watch again, his stomach churning as he realized he’d been running around for over an hour. He should just phone Jazz and tell her to phone Danny and find out where he was. He could swing by and pick him up and then meet her. And then be done with this.
Of course, that would mean admitting he’d managed to lose her brother in the first place.
Hopefully, she’d just chalk this up to Danny’s love of practical jokes.
After more dithering, Wirt finally made the call. Jazz picked up on the second ring. “Hello?”
“Jazz, um, I’m calling instead of texting because this is kinda an emergency? I might’ve, uh, lost your brother, and I don’t—”
She let out a sigh. “Don’t worry about it, Wirt. I’ll text him my location and he’ll find me. He has a bad habit of disappearing sometimes. And if he pulled this on you…. We should really talk. Meet me at the library.”
She hung up without waiting for an answer, not clarifying which library, but that was fine, because Wirt knew exactly which one she meant. And he didn’t plan to blow her off after what he’d done. Should he be flattered her brother felt it appropriate to pull a disappearing act on him? Did he only do it with family friends? She’d sounded exasperated enough that it really couldn’t be uncommon, but….
Jazz was at her favourite table in the library when Wirt arrived, the one off in one corner and half-hidden behind the shelves to the point that was hard to find if you didn’t know it was there. He slid into the chair opposite her, and she frowned at him as her eyes flicked over him. “Do you remember everything that happened? Can you tell me?”
That was…an odd first question. But this was Jazz, and she asked weird questions. And if Wirt tried to figure out why, he’d somehow wind up in a deeper hole than whichever one he was going to dig for himself anyway, so he decided to just go with it. “Yeah? We were in my dorm room. Surprised Toby and Claire— Did you know that she was in town? Or that he’s in a play?”
“My question first, please.”
Wirt blinked. “Um, right. Well, we surprised them, I guess. Toby must’ve cut class because Claire was in town to help him with costuming, and then they went to show everyone else in the group. And then Danny, uh, said he had to use the bathroom, except he didn’t come back out, and when I finally checked it, it was empty.”
Jazz rolled her eyes. “Of course it was,” she muttered. “Because that’s not at all suspicious.”
“Um.” She thought it was suspicious, too? What did that mean? “I, uh, never saw him leave, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t sneak by me. I mean. He must’ve. Because he wasn’t in there. And it’s not like he could go anywhere else from the bathroom.”
Jazz just nodded. “Well, I didn’t know Claire was in town, or that Toby was claiming to be in a play, but I suppose I should’ve guessed it earlier.”
“That he’s secretly a drama nut and didn’t want any of us to know?”
“No. That he might be the one I need to worry about more than you.”
Wirt raised his eyebrows. He knew Jazz was a worrywart, but that was ridiculous. “Are you kidding? He’s at least passing Wendy’s weird apocalypse classes with flying colours.”
“Which is what should’ve been my first clue.”
“Clue to what?”
“That he’s involved in something.” The answer came from behind Wirt, and he jumped. He caught a fleeting look of Jazz’s thoroughly unsurprised face as he twisted to look at Danny. How long had he been standing there? “Jazz, uh, we should talk. Not here.”
“It might have to be here, Danny. Wirt’s Toby’s roommate.”
“Uh….” Chances were Danny was right and he didn’t actually need to be here for whatever the impending conversation was going to be. Chances were—
“Yeah, but does he even believe in ghosts?”
—it would just make him feel like the only sane person in the entire world. Which he knew was an exaggeration. It just felt like an appropriate exaggeration.
“What does that have to do with anything?” Wirt burst out. Seriously, was Danny as crazy as Jazz? Okay, he probably was, but still. This obsession with ghosts was weird, even considering their parents studied it. And it’s not like Toby was involved with drugs or something bad. It was just a drama club or something like that. Wirt was planning on going to see the play, whenever it was, once he got the date and time and place out of Toby. To support his roommate.
He was really thinking he shouldn’t ask Jazz to join him. Maybe not even Wendy.
“Shh. Library, remember?” Jazz said as Danny sat down next to Wirt.
“I hate this,” Wirt muttered. He didn’t mean it, but was it too much to ask to have a couple of normal friends? He had a few acquaintances from various classes, but no one he hung out with beyond Toby and Wendy and now Jazz.
…Greg was right. He really needed to get out more. He got stuck in his own little world too often to make friends easily, and he didn’t want to think what it said about him if the only people you were friends with tended to be remotely like-minded. Becoming friends with Toby had been inevitable, and it was through his association with Toby that he’d wound up friends with Wendy and Jazz—almost without realizing it.
Except that Wendy really hadn’t given him a choice in the matter.
And he was pretty sure he still counted it as friendship now even if their first few interactions had seemed more like he’d been coerced into it.
“That’s a no, isn’t it?” Danny asked, looking between Wirt and Jazz. He rolled his eyes and turned back to his sister. “Why do you, of all people, think this is a good idea? You were pretty much skeptic of the year when we were growing up until I, uh, until Phantom started showing up regularly.”
Jazz just crossed her arms and stared at her brother.
Wirt didn’t know what that meant, but obviously Danny did. “C’mon, Jazz. He’s not overshadowed. I checked. I don’t think he’s…involved.”
Involved? In what? And what did Danny mean by overshadowed? How the heck did he check for that, whatever it was? When did he check for that?
“And Toby?”
Jazz should not be treating this like a normal conversation. It was not a normal conversation.
Danny shook his head. “Not a ghost thing. The hammer, the armour, whatever it is. That’s…something else.”
“I’ll have to check with Wendy and see if she knows anything about it,” Jazz murmured. Wirt decided against telling her that Wendy also said she hadn’t known anything about a play. Mostly because he didn’t want her to phone and invite Wendy to this conversation when it would mean explaining everything to Jazz about how he’d acted and she’d psychoanalyze him or something. As if this weren’t bad enough.
“But the girl—Claire, I guess—has a staff. Not like Freakshow’s, so don’t panic, okay?”
Wirt didn’t want to ask. Well, he did, but he had a feeling he wouldn’t like the answer, so he thought it best to keep his mouth shut. Why would Danny panic about the prop Claire had been holding for Toby’s play? It was just a prop. And he didn’t even know them.
“I caught her using it. It makes portals, Jazz. Into or through the Ghost Zone. I didn’t follow them because I wasn’t sure I’d make it back and I still can’t do that, but….” Danny shrugged. “I could check with Frostbite and Clockwork. Frostbite might have heard of it. Clockwork would know, but he might not tell me.”
“Check with Dora, too, if Frostbite doesn’t know anything.”
Fine, now Wirt was tempted to ask. “What you mean by portals?” Jazz had told him about the Ghost Zone, but a staff that was capable of making portals to the afterlife or whatever didn’t make sense.
Of course, neither did the fact that an entire town had wound up there.
Wirt really wished that had been a joke newspaper, but—
“Doorways,” Danny said flatly. “Holes in the fabric of reality. Exactly what you’re picturing.”
He shouldn’t have asked.
“Um, why do you think the staff does that, exactly?”
Danny stared at him. “What part of ‘I caught her using it’ did you not understand? I saw it with my own eyes. She’s either skipping into the Ghost Zone whenever she wants—risking Walker’s wrath and whoever else’s—or she’s taking a shortcut through it somehow, like a condensed version of the Infi-Map that she can actually control.”
Okay, he was going to pretend this conversation wasn’t completely insane. “How do you know it’s connected to the Ghost Zone?”
He expected one of them to say something along the lines of ‘what other dimensions do you know?’ or something that would make it very clear that they figured the Ghost Zone was it. Instead, Danny said, “I just know.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“I can feel it, okay?”
He could—? “That’s even less of an answer!”
“No, it’s not, and keep your voice down. I am not about to be kicked out of my favourite library.” Wirt groaned but held his tongue as Jazz asked, “You’re sure it’s the staff and not something else?”
Danny nodded as if that were the most normal question in the world. “I don’t know how she got her hands on it, but yeah. If I can get some of Mom and Dad’s tech to Tuck, he might even be able to make something that’ll pick up on where she’s been using it. We could figure this out that way.”
Right. So now Danny and Jazz were completely convinced that Toby’s friend Claire was some dimension hopper. Like it was normal for people to jump through dimensions.
This definitely explained why all his friends kept bringing up the Unknown. They really didn’t think it was just a story. But he’d sound like an idiot if he changed his story now, right? He could at least wait until they brought it up again. He didn’t have to volunteer this information right away. Especially not when Jazz’s brother was around—because even if he would clearly believe it, he didn’t need to know everything.
“How did you get past me in the dorm?” Wirt asked.
For once, Danny looked uncomfortable. He rubbed the back of his neck and slouched. “I just sneaked out when you weren’t looking,” he mumbled.
“I was still standing in the hallway when you went into the bathroom,” Wirt said, “and then I went into the room and closed the door and you weren’t….”
“I’m…good at illusions?”
It wasn’t even a good lie.
“I ducked around you when you weren’t looking. I used to do it to Jazz all the time before she left for college. It’s not a big deal.”
Wirt expected Jazz to chime in with support, but she didn’t.
He swallowed and looked at her. “The truth’s gonna sound like a story, isn’t it?”
“A story for another time,” she said by way of agreement.
He would’ve preferred silence. What the heck was really going on here? What was Toby involved in? What was Danny not saying? If the Ghost Zone and the Unknown were somehow connected, and he definitely didn’t know if they were, and if Claire and Toby could access it, why would they need armour? The Unknown might’ve had one room schoolhouses and paddle steamers and stuff, but it wasn’t so far off their own time that anyone required medieval armour.
Not that Wirt actually knew if it was supposed to be medieval armour.
Not that he was completely abandoning the idea that Toby was really in a play, either. Because he certainly could be. That would make so much more sense than all of this. He couldn’t believe he was going along with this. He shouldn’t be. And yet even Wendy had said—
Something’s up. You know that, right? This isn’t a game.
You can’t ignore the truth forever.
“I don’t know if Wendy knows anything about Toby and Claire,” Wirt said slowly, “but she definitely knows something.”
This time, Jazz read something in Danny’s expression that Wirt missed and shook her head. “She’s not overshadowed. I’m confident in that much or I would’ve had you check her out, too.”
Wait.
Wirt pointed at Danny. “Is that why you wanted me to babysit him?”
“You weren’t babysitting,” Jazz said at the same time Danny exclaimed, “I don’t need a babysitter!”
“So you’re not denying that the entire reason you wanted me to hang out with him all day was so he could check me out for whatever this overshadowing thing is?”
“Wirt—”
“What did you even do?”
“Library,” Jazz hissed, and Wirt rolled his eyes.
“Just tell me the truth! Then I’ll be quiet.”
“You want the truth?” Danny asked. “When you aren’t even telling them the truth?”
“Seriously? Is there anyone you haven’t told about that stupid assignment?”
Jazz narrowed her eyes. “Yet you’re the one who keeps mentioning it, Wirt. Not me.”
Right. He’d walked into that, hadn’t he? Fine. “You want to pretend it’s not just an assignment? Then let’s pretend it’s not just assignment. Let’s pretend it’s real. I went to the Unknown with my brother. It’s another dimension. I faced demons and made friends and nearly died trying to get home. Your turn.”
Jazz’s expression didn’t change. Danny looked around, maybe to see if anyone was looking their way after his earlier outburst. Jazz’s favourite little nook was fairly secluded, but there were tables nearby, equally as hidden, and the seclusion was more artificial than anything else. Still, apparently they hadn’t disturbed anyone, since Danny was grinning when he faced Wirt again. “I’m the tragic victim of a lab accident,” he said. “Safety wasn’t exactly our parents’ highest priority, but like I said, it was an accident.”
Wirt raised his eyebrows. “So?”
“So that’s how I got past you earlier. And that’s how come I know you’re not overshadowed. And that Claire’s staff has ties to the Ghost Zone.”
Wirt glanced at Jazz, but her face betrayed nothing. Danny was a lot easier to read. He was having fun with this. There was a definite note of sarcasm in his tone. But he also looked perfectly sincere, even though Wirt had no idea how a lab accident was supposed to explain all that. “So you, what, burned yourself on a Bunsen burner? Accidentally smashed a couple of test tubes of chemicals and stepped on the glass? And that made you the annoying prankster you clearly are?” He could think of several more choice words to call Jazz’s brother, but it was safer to stick with Jazz’s words. If Toby really was wrapped up in something, Wirt didn’t intend to burn all his bridges before he could help his friend.
Jazz snorted.
Danny’s grin widened. “Not exactly,” he said.
And then he disappeared.
He just…disappeared.
Wirt was staring at him, and then he was just gone. He didn’t move. There was no distraction to catch Wirt’s attention while he ducked under the table or hid somewhere in the stacks. He was just there. And then he wasn’t. And this was a bloody library; it didn’t have mirrors or whatever else would’ve been needed to make an illusion. And Danny had pulled out the chair to sit down, so it wasn’t some kind of high-tech hologram, and—
“I’ll call Wendy,” Jazz said, “and warn her that we’re going to reconvene at our place. You can think of exactly what you’re going to say as we walk over.”

No Damsel In Distress In Sight
Episode 12:
Dae Young went to visit Myung Ju one last time before he went to help Shi Jin in rescuing Doctor Kang and Yoo Ji. He informed her of the situation.
“ We lost complete contact with Captain Yoo, and Doctor Kang Mo Yeon is assumed to be kidnapped along with Mun Yoo Ji who had gone after Mo Yeon ”
“ Shi Jin seems to be on a one-man operation ” he continued, he put his dog tags in Myung Ju’s hands and told her to take care of them while he’s gone.
“ Starting now, we'll begin an unauthorized black ops mission. We expect an armed clash with armed gang members, and there is no backup other than us. ” Dae Young paused, looking at the three men before him.
“This is an out-of-uniform mission, and we may not come back alive. If you don't want to take part, you are excused.” Dae Young informed them, they all looked stoic, Gwang Nam had an anxious look, he didn't know what to do, Yoo Ji was kidnapped by Agus because she tailed them. He wanted to hug her as well as yell at her.
“ Any questions? ” he asked
“ No, sir ” they responded. Dae Young nodded and told them to gear up.
____________________________________________________________________
Yoo Ji had cut all of the ropes, she tried the door and found it open, she scrunched her face, ‘are they stupid?’ she shook her head.
She checked the shadows underneath the door and saw no shadows passing by. She cracked the door open just a little and peeked outside, it was empty. Seriously, they were doing a horrible job at keeping hostages. She looked up and saw that there were security cameras. She glanced at one of the windows, it was night time already. She quickly found their blind spots and stayed within them. She went down the long hallway and looked at the room with all the children, she found just like she left them, she gave them a thumbs up and a small smile. She continued down until she heard the sound of Agus’s laughter. She snuck closer and heard what he was saying clearer.
“ Bye-bye, we’re in the money- right now ” he sang, she had no idea what he meant, but it was probably his latest deal or something. Yoo Ji rolled her eyes. She analyzed the situation again, any moment the guy watching the cameras will spot her, but she only has a pocket knife. But if she bursts in through the door, she would be taken down very quickly. But if she gets caught outside she maybe can get a gun and won't be so vulnerable once she barges in on Agus’s one-sided conversation.
As soon as she finished thinking she spotted a man making a turn into the hallway. She swiftly used his thigh as a step ladder and she hoisted herself onto his shoulders before choking him with her thighs. Black widow style, his body dropped and she grabbed his gun and checked the clip, it was a colt 25. She had five bullets in the small gun. It was designed to fit on the body and be concealed. She shrugged, she doesn't think she’ll have to use it but it's good to be safe. She dragged the unconscious man to a room and locked it from the outside. She burst into the room Agus and Mo Yeon were in.
“Drop your gun!” Yoo Ji yelled at Agus. he whirled around but didn't put his hands up. Yoo Ji miscalculated, he wasn’t alone he was with the fake U.N. guy and two more guys with rifles. Yoo Ji pointed her gun at Agus and then fake U.N. guy, they didn't look armed but the guys with the rifles were ready to shoot.
“Tsk tsk, Mun Yoo Ji, you keep on making mistakes.” Agus snickered.
“If you’re a man fight me, no guns or knives.” Yoo Ji spat. She didn't even have time to check if Mo Yeon was inside the room, she had Agus right here and she can take him out.
“Now, why would I do that?” Agus looked at her with ease.
“If I die, it won't matter, Captain Yoo will end you, but if you die, I get to keep the money” she smirked. Agus raised an eyebrow.
“I doubt it. But I want to be entertained while Big Boss arrives. Gabe, you fight her” Agus grinned at the fake U.N. guy, Agus waved at the other two guys and told them to lower their guns. Yoo Ji dropped the gun and slid it behind her. Gabe smirked and lunged at her, she ducked and elbowed him in the back, she spun around and ducked again, she punched Gabe in his stomach. He keeled over and clutched his stomach. She kneed his head while he was lowered onto the floor.
Gabe was able to grab onto her waist and flipped them around, she was under him and was shielding her face from his punches. She finally caught a glimpse of Mo Yeon, but she looked horrified. She smiled and grabbed onto Gabe’s right arm and pulled it down the opposite way, stopping his movement momentarily. Yoo Ji then used her other hand to push her body off the ground, knocking Gabe off her.
“Come on Gabe, I am sure you can do better than that” Yoo Ji taunted, her eyes flickering to Agus’s desk, he had moved the money into a case and he lounged on his chair as he watched the fight and his watch, occasionally.
Gabe ran towards her and grabbed the back of her head and kneed her so hard, she punched his stomach to let her go. Yoo Ji was becoming light-headed, but she shook it off and she had to win. She took a deep breath and released it. Gabe tried to punch her face but she ducked and hit his diaphragm, knocking the breath out of him, he should be in pain for a while. She tackled him and started punching him just as he did a few minutes ago, he covered his face to protect it, she heard Agus speak.
“ Times up, we’ll see if your boyfriend kept his promise , Gabe, wrap it up” Agus instructed him, in that split second Yoo Ji acted fast, she reached behind her and grabbed a gun and tucked it into her pants, thanking the lord that it was a smaller gun than normal. Gabe grabbed her and forced her hands behind her back. She smirked, but then ended up wincing instead, Gabe had gotten a few punches on her face, her lip was busted but not bleeding.
“I let you have your fun, but now it’s time for me to leave.” Agus addressed Yoo Ji, he turned to Mo Yeon who was still tied up.
“Your boyfriend better do as he was told or you both won't live to see tomorrow” he grinned sadistically.
“You go to the backroom, we’ll use the reporter as a back up if the Captain decides to be a little bitch,” Agus told one of the men standing guard, who pushed Yoo Ji towards a door she didn't notice when she busted in, it was behind the safe. She glanced back and saw Agus’s men untying Mo Yeon and holding tightly onto her.
“Let’s get you dressed up” Yoo Ji heard Agus faintly say as the door shut behind them.
_____________________________________________________________________
Shi Jin stood alone in front of Agus and his men, he looked behind them and found only Mo Yeon, she had a bleeding lip and a bomb vest. Shi Jin was enraged, he raised his gun at Agus.
“ Did you hit her? ” he gritted out in English, “ All snipers on standby. ” Shi Jin said switching to Korean so that Agus doesn't understand.
“I don't see Mun Yoo Ji, I think they still have her hostage” Shi Jin communicated. There was shuffling in his earpiece.
“Piccolo transmitting, I’ll go find Firefly, Harry Potter will take care of the children” Gwang Nam responded.
Gwang Nam left his post and started trying rooms; they were empty until he found one that seemed to be the room that Agus was staying in. He checked out the rooms until he found a door behind the safe. He opened it and found a short narrow hallway with one door at the end. He readied his gun before busting the door open.
Once he looked inside he found Yoo Ji pointing a gun at the man that seemed to be with her. She didn't glance behind her.
“If you move I won't hesitate to shoot, where is Agus planning to escape to?” Yoo Ji asked with a menacing tone. Gwang Nam has never seen her use this tone. He had his gun aimed at the man too as he came and stood beside Yoo Ji.
“Piccolo transmitting, I found Firefly, she didn't seem to need much help, she had the guard at gunpoint” Gwang Nam relayed to his team, with a smirk. Gwang Nam heard a chuckle from the other end of the comm.
“Where is Agus going?” Yoo Ji gritted her teeth, glaring at the man.
“Never” the man growled out before grabbing his pocket knife and sticking it into his gut. Yoo Ji sighed and dropped her hand to her side.
“Took you long enough,” Yoo Ji said to Gwang Nam as they made their way back the short hallway and into the room.
“Big Boss and Snoopy are with Doctor Kang who has a bomb vest on, Wolf is at sniper position and Harry Potter is escorting the children.” Gwang Nam responded. Yoo Ji ‘s eyes widened, so that's what Agus meant.
“Oh good, you found the children, I untied them for you” Yoo Ji retorted with an uneasy smile.
“That explains the tied and unconscious guard in the back of the room” Gwang Nam replied. His eyes focusing in front of him with his gun raised in case he needs to shoot. They were able to arrive at a hallway that was adjacent to the main one that Agus and Captain Yoo were in. Gwang Nam signaled Yoo Ji to be quiet and found them to be behind Agus. The Alpha team had Agus’s men surrounded.
“ Look on her left shoulder. The faint green light on the shoulder to the right. I am sure. ” Snoopy’s voice echoed as it played in Gwang Nam’s earpiece and in the scene before them.
Yoo Ji checked the clip from her gun, she still had 5 bullets, she could put them to use.
“ What are you doing? ” Agus asked when Shi Jin aimed at Mo Yeon. Yoo Ji rolled her shoulder, she winced. She focused on Shi Jin.
“ Take aim, ” Shi Jin said to Dae Young. Gwang Nam refocused the gun. Shi Jin shot the transmitter on Mo Yeon’s shoulder, it kickstarted the chaos and bullets. Mo Yeon ducked to the floor and started crawling towards Shi Jin. Yoo Ji took aim at the men and shot them down. While Gwang Nam did the same.
“Get behind me!” he shouted, he was way more heavily armed than she is. She ducked behind him after she ran out of bullets. Once Agus and his men were down they crossed the hallway to stand by Snoopy and Captain Yoo.
Agus seemed to be injured but not dead as he grabbed his fallen gun, Shi Jin didn't give him a moment more before shooting the chandelier and letting it fall and catch on fire. It didn't burn for long but it did hinder him.
Yoo Ji came and knelt by Mo Yeon and Snoopy as he tried to disable the bomb. Captain Yoo was next to Mo Yeon to help comfort the shaking doctor. They had destroyed the transmitter from the vest to Agus remote but they didn't stop the bomb itself. Gwang Nam stood guard as they talked.
“ How much time is left? ” Shi Jin asked Woo Geun.
“ I only need a minute. I can disarm it in one minute. ” Snoopy responded. Woo Geun held onto the wires, Yoo Jii glimpsed at the wires, he needed to cut the red and black.
“ Just don’t move, ” Woo Geun instructed the shaking Doctor.
“ It's not that I am moving ” Mo Yeon looked up, tears started making their way down her face as her hands shook more. Shi Jin tried to distract her. Yoo Ji sighed and looked at Woo Geun.
“ It only has 30 seconds, you should try to get somewhere far, hurry, ” Mo Yeon said shakingly.
“ There’s a lot we can do in 30 seconds ” Captain Yoo smiled reassuringly at her.
“The red and black right?” Yoo Ji murmured, Woo Geun looked at her with shock but he quickly got over it as he started cutting the wires
“ I am done, I will take it off of her. ” Woo Geun informed the Captain.
“ See? ” he smiled
“ I was able to successfully take off the vest but not disable the bomb, ” Woo Geun said with urgency, but he carefully peeled the vest of Mo Yeon.
“ Please take cover! ” Woo Geun yelled and threw the vest out the window. Gwang Nam grabbed Yoo Ji and shielded her with his body from the blast. Yoo Ji felt the heat from the outside, Gwang Nam was on top of her and his head was very close to hers, she could hear Wolf’s warning to Shi Jin. she lifted her head and saw that Agus had fired his gun at Shi Jin. Shi Jin shielded Mo Yeon with his body, but Yoo Ji couldn't see anything else. She looked around her for a gun but it didn’t seem like there were any on her side. Gwang Nam had his gun strapped to his back.
“Gwang Nam, quickly your gun” she groaned, he was still lying on top of her. Gwang Nam groaned and rolled over, he seemed to have been hit with the sediment of the bomb.
“Can you stand?” Yoo Ji asked him, her hand on his shoulder, the debris seemed to hit his back.
“I don't need to be able to stand, I need to be able to shoot” he responded aiming his gun at Agus, who was in between two windows. But his aim wasn’t focused.
“Okay, stop. It's not gonna do us any good if you get more hurt,” Yoo Ji eyes the gun in his hand. Maybe she’ll have more luck.
“Forget this” Yoo Ji turned to Shi Jin as he laid on the ground, his gun aimed at Agus. Shi Jin shot him in his chest, making him drop the case of money he had in his hand. Shi Jin didn't stop though, he emptied his magazine into Agus, who finally went down, for good.
Everything was eerily quiet as they started to leave the empty house, Mo Yeon was helped into the chopper and Shi Jin took the place of the pilot. The rest of the Alpha team sat in the back with Yoo Ji, who was relieved that this day is over.
Yoo Ji was going to sport a lot of bruises the next day, and her body was already starting to feel sore. But in hindsight, this is a much better option than being dead. As she settled down next to Gwang Nam, she felt him rest his arm around her shoulder.
“Okay, I am not trying to ruin the moment but where did you read how to disassemble a bomb?” Woo Geun asked Yoo Ji. Gwang Nam looked at her with surprise, he hadn't heard her talk to Woo Geun about the bomb. Dae Young raised a mere eyebrow at the reporter. He was truly impressed, she had held her own pretty well despite the situation.
“You’ve read about bomb disassembling?” Gwang Nam questioned, at this point he didn't know whether to be proud or scared that she knew this information. This feeling is starting to become very familiar whenever he finds out something new about Yoo Ji.
“And you think I can just bring it up from memory?” Yoo Ji sarcastically replied to both men.
“It's not like you can't,” Dae Young retorted, Yoo Ji huffed.
“I had to deal with bomb vests before, I thought it would be handy if I knew how to disable them before the expert arrives, you know...in case he’s late” she responded softly, recalling a horrible memory. All three men paused and looked at Yoo Ji, they realized that this reporter has gone through so much more than the usual investigation for a good story.
Once they arrived back on base, Dae Young left to go speak with Myung Ju and Shi Jin and Mo Yeon went on their own way. As they all settled back into their own bubbles Gwang Nam helped Yoo Ji onto a chair to assess the damage, she had to wrap her wounds, he had brought out a first aid kit with him.
“We still gotta talk about…” he let his sentence trail off, Yoo Ji nodded her head. He pressed his hand onto her forehead, she winced. He brought out bandages, she didn't even know where she was bleeding. She refused to look in case it tricked her mind and she couldn't keep fighting.
“I know, I am not mad anymore, it's just inconvenient. I don't like my past experiences to hinder my future that's all” Yoo Ji admitted. She had thought about why she was so mad at him for finding out, it was because she didn't want those experiences to define who she is, and how people act around her.
“It doesn't, I just wanted to know why you never sleep at night” Gwang Nam admitted. Yoo Ji looked at him with surprise.
“The last couple of weeks, you would wander around the base at night, I would be on night watch and I would see you” he continued, he let a smile slip and gazed into her eyes. He moved onto her arms, they were covered in cuts from rolling on the ground so much during fights.
“I never would’ve known that you went through such things if Doctor Kang didn't tell me. That’s reassurance that you didn't let those experiences hinder you from moving on” he tugged her closer and kissed her head. He moved to check her torso, she winced at his touch on her stomach. He slowly peeled away the layers of clothes and gauged at how bad the injury was. He started softly checking her abdomen, pushing in on certain parts of her stomach. Yoo Ji let him do it and didn't complain about the pain.
“How does it feel?” He examined her facial features in case she tries to cover up her emotions.
“Feels like I am getting stabbed” she responded truthfully, she could barely hold in how much it hurt.
“How do you know what it feels like to be stabb- Never mind don't answer that question” Gwang Nam couldn’t hold in his curiosity but decided that he didn't want to know, he was sure that the woman in front of him went through hell and back.
“It's good that you have such an understanding boyfriend,” he teased as he wrapped her wrist, she might’ve sprained it while fighting. She was still coming off the adrenaline rush so the pain in her wrist was just a dull ache that was slowly intensifying.
“Oh yes. Very caring and sensitive” Yoo Ji responded with as much teasing.
-Next Morning-
Yoo Ji woke up with distant voices of many men chanting. She groaned at first before remembering what that must mean. The ‘morning doves’ are back. She dragged her aching body towards the basin of water and where Nurses Choi and Ha were gathered. This time with an unlikely guest, Doctor Song.
“You’ve come to watch ‘Morning Doves’ too?” Yoo Ji grinned at the scolding doctor. He shook his head and pushed through the women. She caught a glimpse of Gwang Nam at the very back, winking at her discreetly.
“ Sergeant First Class Seo! ” Sang Hyun called out to the only fully dressed man jogging with the soldiers.
“ After watching and enduring it over and over, I am saying this as an intellectual that must take action. Why do you have to do those obscene things every day? It's so harmful, seriously! ” Sang Hyun whined as Dae Young took a moment before chuckling and clapping the doctor’s shoulder and jogging to catch up with the men.
Yoo Ji knew that the medical team would have a meeting after breakfast so she would have time to go into town and report on the last few pieces of information. She even had time to go over the information she got from the base so long ago.
It turns out the arms dealer that she was following for weeks was Agus all along, just under a different alias, with Agus dead they had no ring leader and she would be able to turn in the information and lead to their arrest. As soon as she finished writing the report and handed it in, she was handed a letter.
She waited until she got back on base to read it, she didn't really know what came after this. It was either follow another case or go home, she hoped it was the latter. She knows that within the next week, the soldiers should be returning to their homes. She ripped the envelope open to see an official statement by her company that she can go back the next week. She grinned and quickly got out of the car and ran to the common room. She didn't pay attention to the time or her pain. Mostly because she took painkillers before she left, but she was happy when she saw the medical team gathered.
“I officially got an order to go home next week!” she grinned, waving the letter in the air.
“ I'm not super excited about this. Am I the only one? ” Doctor Song said, shaking his head.
“ Me too, I feel weird ” Nurse Choi responded.
“Y’all are so weird, I can't wait to go home, I miss my bed” Yoo Ji sighed dreamily.
“ Well then, should we go do our last round in Urk? ” Mo Yeon asked the medical team, who all nodded.
“You guys go without me, I am going to go tell Captain Yoo that he doesn't have to deal with me anymore” Yoo Ji winked as she walked out of the room.
Yoo Ji would’ve skipped to the main room where Captain Yoo and Deputy Leader Seo have their meetings but she was still sore from the night before so she settled on walking at a slower pace. She eventually arrived and found the Alpha team all gathered.
“Reporter Mun Yoo Ji reporting to duty” she joked as she knocked on the door.
“Yoo Ji, how are you feeling? I heard that you were already escaping when First Sergeant Lim came to rescue you” Shi Jin greeted her, with a smile.
“Well you know I can handle myself just fine” Yoo Ji smiled back.
“No kidding, I’ve seen you fight, I guess I won't have to worry about you causing trouble and not being able to handle it anymore” Shi Jin started with a chuckle, Yoo Ji’s eyes widened and looked at Shi Jin with a look that clearly said drop it.
“What is he talking about? Did you fight someone that I am not aware of?” Gwang Nam queried, raising an eyebrow.
“You didn't tell him that you helped me fight the armed gang that had Fatima?” Shi Jin said with an obviously loud tone. Yoo Ji glared at the Captain. As she turned around she saw Dae Young, Woo Geun, and Cheol Ho holding their laughter.
“You what?”
“Look, it wasn’t a big deal, besides Captain Yoo didn't even let me fire the gun” Yoo Ji defended.
“That reminds me, how did you find a gun while you were being held hostage?” Woo Geun asked, recalling Gwang Nam’s statement on how he found Yoo Ji.
“They didn’t check my body for weapons, I didn't have just a gun but a pocket knife too,” Yoo Ji shrugged while taking out the pocket knife she had stolen the night before.
“Why do you think Gabe went down so fast? That asshole got a few punches in, I had to give him some kind of injury” Yoo Ji added making finger guns at them. Shi Jin looked at Gwang Nam with wide eyes.
“She actually shot them?”
“She did but thankfully she had only 5 bullets” Gwang Nam sighed, before turning to Yoo Ji.
“I am going to need you to stay within three feet of me at all times because I can't trust you won’t hurt someone or yourself” he sighed in fake defeat, as his eyes lowered he caught the letter in her hand.
“What’s that?” he pointed at the letter.
“Guess who gets to go home next week,” Yoo Ji smirked, waving the letter at them.
“You’re getting sent back too?” Gwang Nam said with disbelief. Yoo Ji nodded explaining how her last assignment had ended and that they were sending her back.
Shi Jin excused himself as he needed to go talk to someone, no doubt it was Mo Yeon but he didn't confirm when Yoo Ji asked. Yoo Ji could tell something was stressing out the Captain so she let it go, she was learning to do that a lot lately.
Yoo Ji waved at Dae Young as he left to check on Myung Ju, Yoo Ji continued to tell the rest of the Alpha team of her plans once she got back home.
After that, she decided to go visit Myung Ju, she didn't have time to go check on her, and she was wondering how her friend was.
“Myung Ju!” Yoo Ji gleefully called out. “How are you feeling?” Yoo Ji asked as she settled into the chair by her bed.
“I am feeling way better” Myung Ju grinned at Yoo Ji, Yoo Ji guessed it was probably due to Dae Young’s visit before hers.
“I heard a lot of about what you’ve been doing these days” Myung Ju teased, while Yoo Ji rolled her eyes.
“I like some danger, but it's been such a constant that I am growing sick of it at this point. I just want to go home and have some domestic danger and maybe even some good old Korean food.” Yoo Ji jokes, Myung Ju laughed, telling her that she was also craving pork belly and some alcohol.
Ki Bum knocked on the door and saluted Myung Ju, she nodded at him.
“Sergeant First Class and First Sergeant Lim requested both of your presence in the common room.” he relayed the information.
Yoo Ji nodded and helped Myung Ju down from the bed and they went to their destination. They found Mo Yeon already seated at the dinner table with all three men serving chicken soup into trays.
“I never thought I’d see that” Yoo Ji teased as she caught a glimpse of all the men wearing aprons on their waists.
“ Wow, this is so touching ” Myung Ju let out with an amazed sigh.
“ You look really good in those aprons, too. ” Mo Yeon complimented Shi Jin with a smile.
“ Well, I am the type that likes to make promises for the future. ” Shi Jin said as all three men took seats facing each girl.
“ You three have worked so hard, so we prepared this to help you regain your strength. ” Dae Young stated with a small smile.
“ But I don’t know if it will taste good, ” he added as they started eating.
“ This is really delicious! The seasoning is perfect, too! ” Mo Yeon stated, Yoo Ji, looked at the three men with an eyebrow raised.
“You guys don't know how to cook though,” she said.
“ This is Private Kim's work indeed. ” Myung Ju responded to Yoo Ji’s unanswered statement.
“ Isn't that right? ” Mo Yeon agreed and she took another bite. Mo Yeon sighed as she said that she will miss Ki Bum’s cooking when they go back to Korea.
“ When I was receiving commissioned training, I used to go to this ginger chicken stew shop in front of my school quite often. ” Myung Ju recalled, Yoo Ji choked on her food, knowing what the story is going to be. She locked eyes with Gwang Nam and gave him a smirk, she mouthed ‘watch’.
“ That's so true. I did see you and Min Yoon Gi eating chicken stew with ginseng together over at that restaurant. ” Mo Yeon responded. Shi Jin and Dae Young started to look confused before the gears in their head started working, same with Gwang Nam
“ I didn’t go with him, ” Myung Ju replied, pausing to look at Mo Yeon. they both seemed to forget that there were other people around them. Yoo Ji watched in amusement. Gwang Nam smiled at Yoo Ji having fun with this semi-argument between her friends.
“ He just followed me because he said that he had something to tell me. ” she continued before sighing and finishing with a question.
“ I think you are still misunderstanding that I wedged in between your relationship- ” Myung Ju didn't finish before Mo Yeon cut her off. Yoo Ji stifled a laugh.
“ You did wedge in. What did he need to talk to you about anyway? ” Mo Yeon questioned.
“ He was just saying that there was no relationship between you two. ” Myung Ju stated Yoo Ji looked at the two men as they sat back in their chair.
“ Did he say that he had nothing to do with me? ” Mo Yeon put down her spoon and turned towards Myung Ju.
“ Yes. He said that you two were nothing but study partners. ” Myung Ju answered.
“ We weren’t just study partners. We have had a thing since April! ” Mo Yeon scoffed at Myung Ju’s answer. Yoo Ji started connecting dots as new information was being revealed. Shi Jin and Dae Young scoffed while looking at their girlfriends.
“Hold on, Min Yoon Gi was in a relationship in April, it wasn't with either of you…” Yoo Ji trailed off, as all of them looked at her.
“What?” Myung Ju demanded.
“I was dating Min Yoon Gi in April, but I found out he was cheating so I broke up with him” Yoo Ji shrugged. Gwang Nam looked at her with disbelief. All five pairs of eyes were on her now.
“I didn't know that it was the same Min Yoon Gi” she stated, she didn't look bothered by the information but all three men were apparently.
“It seems like they were on bad terms with each other because of this Yoon Gi guy or whatever.” Dae Young said with a stoic tone and a blank look. “I don't think I can fall asleep because I want to see this Yoon Gi guy.” Shi Jin responded.
“How could he cheat?” Gwang Nam wandered out loud with an angry tone. Yoo Ji nervously laughed, glancing at the two other girls, who also looked like they wanted to hit themselves for even fighting over the topic. Yoo Ji scolded herself if anything that one thing she shouldn’t have said. They just got over an argument.
“ There's been a misunderstanding ” Mo Yeon stated, while Myung Ju and Yoo Ji nodded their heads.
“They were making such a big fuss to us about just a picture,” Shi Jin started off. Yoo Ji looked at Gwang Nam, he had his arms crossed and an eyebrow raised. She winced, and she was just having fun. Why did she have to add anything to the conversation?
“ And they were having another relationship elsewhere. ” Shi Jin continued, “ I am heated up right now. ” he shook his head
“ I feel like killing whoever this guy is that was messing with these girls. ” Dae Young gritted out.
“I’ll kill him if I ever meet him,” Gwang Nam added. All three of them stood up and started taking off their aprons.
“ I am thinking he is a doctor somewhere. ” Shi Jin started off, looking at Dae Young and Gwang Nam.
“He probably works at Haesung Hospital” Gwang Nam guessed, still looking very pissed off.
“ We should get a grasp of this guy and go do an FEO (Forcible Entry Operations) on him. ” Dae young suggested as they all left the table. The girls had their heads bowed, too ashamed to do anything else.
“ I don't know if I can hold myself when I see him. ” Shi Jin scowled.
“ Snipping will be too clean and an explosion will be a bit boring. ” Dae Young responded
“How about waterboarding then?” Gwang Nam added as they left the room.
Myung Ju rested her head in her hands, “ what kind of embarrassing situation is this? ”.
“ Who started talking about our time as students ” Mo Yeon snapped back.
“what are we going to do now?” Yoo Ji whined
“You’re the one that started talking about Min Yoo Gi” Myung Ju retorted to Mo Yeon.
“ Now is not the time to fight over this, how are we going to fix this mess? ” Mo Yeon asked.
“ Don’t worry about me, worry about yourselves, ” Myung Ju said offhandedly. Mo Yeon and Yoo Ji looked at her with questioning gazes.
“ All I have to do is pretend to be really sick, ” she replied. The two girls sighed. Yoo Ji shook her head and went to find Gwang Nam to try and nullify the situation.
“I am going, good luck, we’ll regroup at 1900 to see if anyone has lost their boyfriend” Yoo Ji joked as she walked out in the direction Gwang Nam went in. She found him in the soldier’s bunkers. She was reading a magazine, but he clearly noticed her walking into the room. Surprisingly there were only a few men hanging around but soon they filed out when they saw Yoo Ji standing by Gwang Nam.
“Come on, it’s not that big of a deal.” Yoo Ji stated, she nudged his body to the side and sat next to him.
“How could you let him play you like that?” Gwang Nam huffed.
“I didn't! That's why I broke up with him, remember?” Yoo Ji defended.
“Come on, it was so long ago” Yoo Ji tried again when Gwang Nam didn't respond. She started poking him as a way to catch his attention when suddenly he flipped them so that her body was under his and he had her hands grasped above her head.
“I never took you as the overprotective type” Yoo Ji teased, putting her arms around his neck.
“I am not, usually” he murmured as he came closer and brushed his lips with hers. Yoo Ji sighed and slightly lifted her head to chase his lips when he pulled back.
“Hey Gwang Nam-” a voice interrupted as Gwang Nam leaned down to meet Yoo Ji’s lips. Shi Jin smirked and leaned against the doorway.
“You better have a good reason for interrupting this” Yoo Ji growled as Gwang Nam rolled over next and got up, with a scowl on his face.
“Actually, I do. We're going tomorrow to Valentine to ask if she can foster Fatima, thought you'd want to say bye to your informant” Shi Jin told her of their plan.
“No it's fine, I will do it on my own time” Yoo Ji waved off, Shi Jin nodded and waved at them with a chuckle. As the door closed behind him, Yoo Ji looked at Gwang Nam with a mischievous smile.
“Will you finish what you started?” she stated.
“No, I think I am good. It's your punishment” Gwang Nam replied, rearranging his locker.
“But I didn't do anything!” Yoo Ji gaped at him, she got off the bed and went to stand between him and the locker. she stood on her tippy toes and pecked his mouth. Gwang Nam couldn’t conceal a smile, he leaned down to meet Yoo Ji halfway the second time she tried to kiss him. He put his arms around her waist as she stood on her feet again, making Gwang Nam lean down more. He didn't mind, he was just enjoying the feeling of her soft lips on his when the door slammed open again, breaking them apart.
“Oh hey!” Ki Bum enthusiastically greeted Gwang Nam as he went over to his bed.
“I am going to kill him,” Yoo Ji murmured, glaring at Ki Bum’s back. She was hidden from view, Gwang Nam towered over her frame.
“Not if I kill him first” Gwang Nam responded, resting his head onto her shoulder, and sighing.
“Oh I didn't know you were here too” Ki Bum turned red as soon as Gwang Nam moved away and Yoo Ji was revealed. Ki Bum realized he’d just walked in on their private moment.
-Early in the morning-
Yoo Ji was up and finished packing her stuff. She was so excited to go back but also going to miss all the fun she had here. She left her bunker and joined the girls for the last time to watch the ’Morning Doves’ one last time.
“ There’s a new face, ” Mo Yeon noticed. The front line of the jogging men was Doctor Song, wearing only shorts and chanting with the men with a proud smile.
“ He used to hate this, ” Nurse Choi said with awe.
“He’s trying to impress someone,” Yoo Ji teased from behind the three girls. Nurse Ha hasn't said anything yet but Yoo Ji knew that she was awkward.
“I haven't finished packing yet” Nurse Ha excused and hurriedly left. Mo Yeon and Yoo Ji chuckled as Nurse Choi looked at them with confusion.
“ A baby doesn't have to know. ” Mo Yeon responded when Min Ji asked what they were laughing about. Yoo Ji shook her head smiling, Mo Yeon and Min Ji excused themselves to finish up packing and Yoo Ji went to check if she left anything in the common room and the Medi-Cube.
By early afternoon everyone was ready and all packed up, the bell rang signaling the moment of silence for the fallen on the earthquake. Everyone faced the tower and the flag and paid their respects.
After that, Woo Geun gathered the Medical staff and took a picture of them, then with the troops, Yoo Ji joined that one. She smiled next to Gwang Nam and felt excitement run through her as she peeked a Gwang Nam smiling and saluting the camera.

Author’s Note: First time writing for Tetsu and he’s probably so out of character haha I don’t know why, but it was so hard to focus on writing this and I’m not sure if it was the fic doing it or just because I can’t focus on one thing for more than two seconds (thanks tumblr). But I powered through and I think the ending is okay?? Either way, enjoy nearly 5,000 words of Tetsu pft Oh, by the way, I cried working on the middle so good luck.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
Your earliest memory that you could recall was about Tetsutetsu, standing over you with a curious expression on his chubby cheeks. It was the height of summer, cicadas singing without pause as the sun beamed down with angry rays of heat. You hated the summer, but your mother was tired of you spending all your free time on the computer, so she ordered you outside to get some exercise. And at the age of six, who were you to argue? Plus, she threatened to cut the internet cord if you didn’t so so, which was a big motivator.
This boy, with his mop of silver hair and black eyes, teeth as sharp as a razor and eyes lined with tan-colored spikes, had seen you fall dramatically to the grass and had rushed over to make sure you were not injured. Screaming in your face admittedly wasn’t the best way to approach someone that might be injured, but his worry touched your heart, even if you didn’t realize it at the time.
As the two of you sat there, talking about all of the things you both enjoyed or couldn’t stand, time quickly ticked by and, before you knew it, the sun was hiding behind the mountains in the distance. You had, surprisingly, completely forgotten about the internet and the anime you had been binging that morning.
When he noticed the darkness quickly setting in, he stood up and offered you his hand. “Come on, I’ll walk you home.”
“Sure,” your hand slid into his own and he pulled you up with little effort, but he didn’t release your hand, nor did you try to pull away. “Ne, what’s your name? Mine is Y/N.”
He grinned widely, his shark-like teeth glinting under the light of the streetlamp. “My name’s Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu! Remember it, because I’m gonna be a pro-hero!”
You honestly didn’t know how to feel, unable to wrap your young mind around how a parent could doom their child with such a name. Did his family hate him? Was it some sort of dare gone wrong? As badly as you wanted to ask him about it, you thought it rude to do so. “Thanks for walking me home, future hero.”
Before you could pull your hand away, he increased his grip. “Can we hang out tomorrow, too?”
You considered this for a moment before nodding, offering him a grin. “Sure!”
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
The second memory that sprang to your mind took place when you were just twelve years old. Spring was coming to a close and you had decided to confess your feelings for your classmate, Yui. The pink-haired boy was your first crush and your first heartbreak, and you had made the mistake of confessing to him during lunch, surrounded by your peers.
It didn’t go well.
“I’m sorry, Y/N, but -”
“He would never like you!” Yua, his twin sister, forced herself between the two of you, her loud voice drawing the attention of the other students. “You’re too ugly for him and you look like a hippo! Hippo Y/N, hippo Y/N!”
Tears stung at your eyes as you looked to Yui, waiting for him to stick up for you, but he only turned his head away, eyes cast toward the ground. The other students soon joined Yua in her teasing.
“Hippo Y/N! Hippo Y/N! Hippo Y/N!”
Your sneakers squeaked across the floor as you ran toward the door, tears blurring your vision. Your nearly ran into Tetsu and his friend as they entered the lunchroom, but you dodged his hands when he tried to reach for you. His brow furrowed in confusion as he stared at your retreating form. Why were you crying? And then he heard the other kids chanting and laughing. As badly as he wanted to yell at Yua, who was clearly the mastermind, you were his top priority. He had to make sure you were okay, but… where had you gone?
The roof was off-limits to the students because of how rusted the railing was, so the doors were kept locked. That meant nothing to you, though, as your quirk, Key, was able to easily bypass this. It was a fairly simple quirk that allowed you to create a key for any lock you touched, but it disappeared after use.
The janitor had left the door unlocked once, allowing a group of girls to skip class by hiding out on the roof. When the staff found out about this, the janitor was fired and the girls received a month of detention each. Since then, the roof has remained unused, no one wanting to risk spending a month with Jamison-sensei. The place was perfect for you to hide away from the other students.
You headed to the far side of the roof, sliding down the side of the metal air conditioning unit, the fan whirring loudly. The sound helped to block out the sound of your sobs, though you did try to muffle them by stuffing your face against your knees.
Tetsu was panicking as he ran through the school, trying to find his best friend, but you were nowhere in sight. As he rounded the corner, he suddenly came to a stop, spying the thin staircase that led directly to the roof. Something compelled him forward and he raced up the stairs without a second thought. Though the door was closed tight, his eyes just barely caught sight of the gray dust left behind in the lock from your quirk – a fine, barely visible powder.
He pushed the door open, the metal creaking loudly. A choked sob reached his ears, making his heart seize painfully as he followed the sound, finding you curled up within yourself, body shaking. The sight left him feeling a pain he had never before felt and he didn’t hesitate to throw his arms around you, whispering softly into your ear as you clung to his shirt as if your life depended on it.
It took a couple of days before you were back to your normal self, and you were surprised that the other kids weren’t still teasing you. While you assumed they had just gotten bored and moved on, the truth was that Tetsu had yelled at anyone he found to be making fun of you, threatening to pound them senseless if they didn’t stop.
You didn’t need to know that.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
You never wanted to be a hero. Really, there wasn’t anything that you wanted for the future, you were just kind of living life and enjoying your youth by binge-watching anime. Maybe you could be a video game designer? Or perhaps you could get a job at the local internet provider. Maybe then they would have better download speeds because it takes far too long to download your anime.
Tetsutetsu was different. He had been motivated to be a hero since he was a child, and he was training hard to get accepted into U.A. high, the leading school for hero hopefuls. Being his best friend meant that he forced you into training with him and even managed to convince you to sign up for the entrance exam alongside him, which you thought was a complete waste of time. After all, how could someone with a Key quirk become a pro hero? Still, you wanted to support your best friend and you had nothing better to do, so you agreed.
The written test was troublesome, mostly because you couldn’t stay focused with a winged boy sitting to your left. His wings would react to his thoughts and feelings, so they kept expanding and shuddering and you couldn’t possibly concentrate until you touched them.
He did not appreciate that.
When it came to the physical test, you had a lot more fun than you had expected. With Tetsu’s training, you were able to dodge most of the robot’s attacks, though one did sock you in the gut, leaving a nasty bruise. While dodging, you just had to locate a control panel or emergency shut off switch, to which your quirk became quite useful. It was pretty cool to see so many different types of quirks in action, you had to admit.
There was one person specifically that caught your eye; a blonde boy with some kind of explosion quirk. Though he didn’t seem to be anything too impressive, he was so aggressive and angry that you couldn’t help feeling intrigued. He was someone that definitely demanded attention.
When the results of the exam finally came in, you were surprised to find that you had been accepted into the hero course. You immediately headed over to Tetsu’s house to see if he had gotten his letter, as well. He had, but was too afraid to open it and made you do so for him.
“You got in!” You grinned after the holographic video ended. “Congratulations, Tetsu!”
He threw his arms around you, sniffling as he tried to hold back his tears. “I got in!!” And then he paused, pulling back so he could look at you. “Did you?”
“Yup! Class… A, I think?”
Tetsu’s smile faltered for half a second, barely noticeable to most, but very much so to yourself. “That’s… great!”
“What’s wrong?” your brow furrowed.
“It’s nothing. I was just hoping we’d be in the same class!”
“Oh, yeah, that does suck. But we’ll still be best friends, don’t worry!”
You made the mistake of believing him.
You’d pay for that later.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
You remembered it like it was yesterday, though it had been about two weeks already. It was, by far, your most painful memory to date, but you couldn’t help feeling like it was all your fault. You had misinterpreted the signs or just missed them altogether. What kind of friend were you? After everything he had done for you over the years, this is how you repay him.
You stole his dream away from him.
It was right after the announcement for the sports festival. The other classes had gathered outside of class 1-A, scoping out the competition because, after you all had been attacked by villains, your class was front-page news. Tetsu was also there, yelling up a storm as he usually did. You couldn’t help but giggle at his antics, but he didn’t appreciate that.
His eyes narrowed at you, fists clenched tightly at his sides. When he spoke, his voice wasn’t raised like normal, it was deadly calm. “You think this is funny, Y/N? This has always been a joke to you. You don’t even want to be a hero, but you get put in class A… you’re pathetic!”
It left like his words had been turned into sharp arrows, piercing your heart with each sentence. In all of the years you’ve known him, he had never talked to you like that, never raised his voice or gotten angry at you. So what had changed?
“Tetsu, I…” But what could you say that didn’t make things worse? He was right, after all.
Bakugo, who you had gotten close to since starting at U.A., scoffed as he threw his back over his shoulder. “You’re just mad because you know you’re beneath us,”
“Katsuki,” you hissed, smacking his shoulder. “Stop trying to make things worse!”
Tetsu’s lip curled back in disgust as he watched you, not missing how you used the boy’s first name. He had witnessed first hand how close you had gotten to the ash blonde and he didn’t like it. “Y/N, this is my declaration! I will beat you in the sports festival and take your spot in class A!”
“Ha! You can try, you damned extra, but you won’t get far! Let’s go, Y/N!” Bakugo took off down the hall.
You turned your attention back to Tetsu with a frown, but he only scoffed and walked in the opposite direction. You could only stand there feeling like shit, watching your best friend walk away from you.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
You sighed as you fell into your seat, eyes trained on the window beside your desk. The sky was dark grey, completely blocking out the sun. Rain fell in heavy sheets, the wind blowing hard enough to knock thin branches from nearby trees. The forecast had said nothing about rain and, just twenty minutes ago, the sun was shining without a cloud in sight.
‘Maybe I have a secret quirk that changes the weather according to my mood,’ you sighed again, burying your face in your arms that sat atop the desk. It certainly reflected your current mood. You had been thinking on it a lot and you came to realize that Tetsu had been slowly distancing himself from you since the day you both were accepted at U.A. You had just assumed he was spending time with his new classmates so you didn’t pressure him, but now you wondered if that had been his subtle way of reaching out to you.
You wanted nothing more than to fix this, but you didn’t know how. You had gone to class B to try and talk it out, but that annoying prick, Monoma, had blocked your way, not missing a beat when it came to insulting class A. For some reason, though, he was careful not to insult you, which you did find strange, but you had more important things to worry about.
“Damn it, Y/N, if you sigh one more damn time I’m gonna kick your ass!” Bakugo jumped out of his seat, slamming his foot on your desk.
You only groaned in response, the sound muffled by your arms.
Kirishima frowned as he approached. “What’s wrong, Y/N?”
You muttered a response, but it was impossible to make out.
“Speak up, damn it!!”
You lifted your head, eyes glassy as you tried not to cry. Seeing this threw Bakugo off guard and he froze, not knowing how to respond. Your eyes met the red rubies of Kirishima, who reminded you so much of Tetsu. You would give anything to fix your relationship with him.
And then it struck you like a bolt of lightning splitting the sky. You knew what you had to do. You jumped out of your chair, startling the two boys who called your name as you ran from the room, nearly hitting Todoroki in your haste.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
“Please, sensei!” You pleaded, bending at the waist as you bowed at the two pro heroes standing before you.
Aizawa rubbed the back of his messy locks, feeling annoyed with your request. “That isn’t possible, Y/N.”
“But why not?” You demanded, straightening your back so you could look him in the eye.
Kan grunted, folding his arms over his chest. “He has to earn his place, not be given it by someone that’s trying to win brownie points.”
“I’m not trying to win brownie points,” you snapped, fists clenching at your sides. “He has more than earned it! I shouldn’t even be here, he should!”
“Calm down,” Aizawa ordered, narrowing his eyes in warning.
“Not until you let Tetsu take my place! I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be a hero! All of this is meaningless to me if I lose him in the process!” Tears flowed down your cheeks but you didn’t care.
Aizawa’s expression softened as he stepped forward, his hand resting on your head. “I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but this is not the way to fix it.”
“I don’t know what else to do, sensei.” You sobbed, looking into his tired eyes. “Tell me what to do,”
“Talk to him and tell him how you feel. That’s the best advice I can give.”
“He won’t talk to me!”
“He doesn’t have to talk, he just has to listen.” He ruffled your hair. “You may not think so, but you belong here. You earned your place. Now go on, go fix this problem. I won’t have you distracted and causing problems.”
“Yes, sensei…” you muttered, rubbing at your eyes as you left the room. Maybe he was right – Tetsu didn’t have to talk to you, and even if he walked away, as long as he heard what you had to say, that was enough. You could only hope that your words would reach him.
With your mind made up, you furiously wiped away your tears before heading for class B. Most of the students had already left the class, but the most important one was still there, but so was Monoma. When the blonde noticed you in the doorway, he sprung up like a Jack in the box.
“What are you doing here, hmm? Did you get lost? Makes sense since from class -”
“Get out of my way!” You snapped, eyes narrowed at him. Even with your eyes red and puffy, he scared of what you might do, but Monoma was an egotistical idiot that didn’t know when to quit.
He laughed loudly, his tone going up an octave to mirror his nervousness. “Class A isn’t at all heroic! You’re all a bunch of villains in training!”
You rolled your eyes before turning your attention to Tetsu. He had clearly heard the commotion, but he continued to write in his book as if you didn’t exist. You swallowed hard, “Tetsu -”
“He doesn’t want to associate with villains from class A!”
“Tetsu,” you called desperately. “You don’t have to respond, but please just listen to what I have to say! I’m a selfish jerk that doesn’t deserve to have such a good friend. You’ve always been there for me no matter what and… all of my best memories are with you! I applied for U.A. because you asked me to, but a part of me did it because I was scared of losing you. I never intended to hurt you or take your place and you’re right, I am pathetic… but I don’t know what else to do. I don’t know how to fix this, Tetsu. You’ve always been better than me at solving problems. You’re better than me at everything! A better friend, a better fighter, a better person.”
While his hand stilled, he didn’t lift his gaze from the book. You were well aware of all the eyes on you, his classmates and several students that had been passing by. You probably looked like a fool, but you didn’t care.
“Do you remember the day we met? You told me to remember your name because you were going to be a pro hero one day. The truth is… You’re already a hero. My hero! You’ve always been there for me. A shoulder to cry on when I’m sad. A friend to confide in when I’m stressed. A knight in shining armor when someone messes with me. I can’t believe it took me so long to realize it, but… I’m in love with you, Tetsu. I have been since the first day we met. I’m so sorry for betraying you, I never meant… I didn’t…” Tears stung your eyes again and you didn’t bother holding them back. “I’m sorry,”
Having said your peace and knowing that Tetsu had no intention of responding, you turned around and left the room, hanging your head as the gathered students whispered about you. You had bore your heart for all to see and, while it hurt like nothing you had felt before, somehow you felt a bit lighter.
People always say you shouldn’t make decisions when you’re emotional, but they fail to realize that’s when you’re most motivated. With this in mind, you waited until class A was empty before slipping a folded piece of paper onto Aizawa’s desk – it was your resignation from from U.A. high. The whole point of coming here was to be with Tetsu because you were scared of losing him, but look where that got you. If Tetsu wasn’t by your side, you didn’t want to be at U.A. anymore.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
BANG
The sudden, loud sound from downstairs jolted you from your sleep, nearly causing you to fall off the bed. A week had passed since you left U.A. and several of your classmates had been trying to contact you, including Bakugo who liked yo bang on your door for thirty fucking minutes, threatening to “burn your ass to ash”. Thankfully, your parents had gone overseas last week and weren’t do back for the rest of the month.
But that left you to wallow in self-pity and binge watch anime filled with romantic drama and tears. Your room was a mess, tissues thrown everywhere, clothes literring the floor, and empty ramen cups stacked up by the desk. Another bang sounded from downstairs and you glanced at the clock.
Six pm. That was a bit early for Bakugo’s visit, but maybe he was trying to catch you off guard. Either way, you couldn’t be botheted, choosing to fall back against the mattress and cover your body with the comforter. In your cocoon, you felt safe and it was the closest you had felt to content since falling out with Tetsu. Your heart clenched painfully just at the thought of him. Yui may have been your first crush, but Tetsu was definitely your first love and boy did it hurt a lot worse than just some crush.
SLAM!
You jumped in surprise, shooting up in bed. Bakugo was persistant, sure, but not that persistent. It sounded like the front of your house collapsed! Panicked, you hurried off the bed while simultaneously trying to throw off the comforter, but your foot got stuck and you ended up falling to the wooden floor face first.
Footsteps echoed loudly as they ran up the stairs to your room, the bedroom door opened with such a force that it bounced off the wall. “Y/N!”
That familiar voice made your head snap up, reddened from the impact to the floor. “T-Tetsu?”
His face was hard and angry, but it softened just a bit when he saw you on the floor. Normally, he would have run to you without a second thought to make sure you were okay, but with everything that had happened, he couldn’t bring himself to do so.
You slowly sat back onto your knees, legs on either side of your body. “Did you break into my house?”
His body tensed up, a small line of pink coming across his cheeks. “I, uh… You wouldn’t answer the door!”
You scoffed. “I wonder how many criminals have tried that excuse.”
An awkward silence settled over the room and neither of you seemed capable of facing the other. Had you ever felt this awkward around him before? You scanned your memory, but every instance you could think of with him felt warm and comforting. You wanted that back, but… just like a piece of water, once it was crumbled up into a ball, no matter how much time you spend trying to smooth it out, it can never be perfect again. And that terrified you.
Unable to take the silence any longer, you finally spoke up, but your voice wasn’t nearly as strong as you wished it was. “What are you doing here?”
“Did you really drop out of U.A.?” he didn’t even give you a chance to respond. “Are you stupid?! Do you have any idea how many kids would kill to get into U.A.?! Into the hero course?! And you just three it away like it was nothing!”
A surge of anger rushed over you as you got to your feet, eyes narrowed at your former best friend. “What the fuck do you care for, huh? I can’t fucking win with you anymore, Tetsu! I didnt even want to apply, but I did it for you and when I got accepted, you got pissed at me because they put me in class A. And then when I give up my spot and leave the program, you’re still not happy! What do you want from me, huh?! You want me to just roll over and die so you don’t have to -!”
Tetsu couldn’t control himself. One minute he was standing in the doorway and the next he had rushed forward, his palm connecting with your cheek.
SMACK
Your eyes widened as your head tilted to the side, cheek stinging from the impact. ‘He just… hit me?’
“Don’t ever say that!” he cried, tears stinging at his eyes. “I can’t live without you, Y/N!”
You didn’t know what to say as the boy fell to his knees, tears falling down his eyes as his body shook. You had never seen him so upset, so vulnerable before. He was always strong and filled with positivity and hope, but now… He was just as broken as you were. You kneeled in front of him, hands suspended in mid-air as you tried to decide if you should comfort him or not. You didn’t want to make the situation worse, but he made the decision for you, throwing himself against your body and burying his face in your chest. You didn’t hesitate to wrap your arms around him, gently running your fingers through his mane of silver hair.
“I’m sorry,” he sobbed, fingers digging into your back. “I just wanted to be your hero but then you got put in class A and started doing better than me! I got jealous and I said things I didn’t mean, I… god I’m so sorry!!”
You softly shushed him, your hand running across the length of his back just as he had done to you so many times in the past. “Its okay, Tetsu, I unders -”
“It’s not!” he cried. “I pushed you away, right into the arms of that damned Bakugo!”
“Katsuki?” Your brow furrowed. “What does he have to do with anything?”
“You think I haven’t noticed how close the two of you are? He’s your new best friend, right?”
“No!” You grabbed his shoulders, pushing him back so you could see his eyes, your hands gently cupping his face. “You are my best friend, Tetsu. You always have been and always will be. I consider Katsuki a friend, sure, but he’s got nothing on you!”
His eyes met yours, his large hands sliding over your own. “In class, did you… did you mean what you said?”
With a blush in your cheeks, you nodded, offering him a smile. “I did. I love you, Tetsutetsu. You’re my everything and I can’t stand the thought of losing you.”
“I love you, too.” He suddenly leaned forward, his lips capturing your own. In that moment, nothing else mattered. The fight was forgotten, the words scrubbed free from both of your memories. All that mattered was here and now, wrapped up in each other’s arms.
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
You stood on the porch, leaning on the wooden railing as you watched the wind blowing the field of flowers in the distance. The house you lived in was just outside the city, within a small town that valued nature over the overwhelming number of buildings the city offered. Plus, there was little crime in the area, making it a safe place to live for families.
The screen door squeaked as it was opened and shut, the wooden floor creaking under the weight as Tetsu stepped up behind you, his arms sliding around your waist, his warm chest pressed up against your back.
“What are you doing out here?” he questioned, voice groggy after having just woken up. A gust of wind blew across the house. “It’s so hot outside, you should come back inside where it’s cool.”
You chuckled, leaning back against him. “It hasn’t been this hot in a while. It brought back some memories.”
He hummed, his lips lazily moving across your neck. “Good ones?”
“The day we met, actually. It was also this hot.”
“Yeah, it was, but your mom still made you go outside.” Tetsu chuckled. “She threatened your internet, right?”
“Yes!” You scowled at the memory, crossing your arms over your chest. “The nerve of that woman. I would never be so cruel to my child!”
He quirked a brow, turning you around to face him. “You’re planning to have a child without me?!”
You pretended to think on it a moment, laughing when he pouted at you. “Hmm, I was thinking of having a kid with that pro hero, what was his name – – Real Steel, that’s it!”
“Oh?” he smirked, leaning down to pepper kisses across your neck. “And what makes him so special?”
You groaned when he bit down softly on your flesh. “He’s such a handsome man. Strong and caring, and those abs, my god.” As if to prove your point, your hand ran under his shirt, nails scraping across his stomach. His muscles tensed and he groaned against your skin.
“You’re such a tease, Y/N.”
You chuckled, tugging at your husband’s hair so your lips could meet his. “But I’m your tease, Tetsu~”
Tetsu smiled warmly, claiming your lips with every ounce of love within his body. Yes, you were definitely his, but he was just as much yours.

Take My Hands Now (Part 5)
pairing: Jungkook x reader
word count: 2,291
genre: drama
summary: You were born with a condition that allowed you to feel the pain someone else was going through when you touched them. Jungkook, on the other hand, looked like he could not be any less bothered with other people’s feelings and was a well known playboy of the school. One night, at a party, while he attempted to turn you into his toy for the night, he grabbed your hand and pain crashed through you, making you wonder whether behind the facade of this pleasure seeker, he could also be hiding something.
warnings: none
With an absolutely arbitrary deadline in mind, Jungkook dutifully headed to the bookstore the next afternoon. He bought you a caramel macchiato. “Last one”, he said as he left it on the counter for you.
You have started to get used to his wandering around the bookstore now. You still weren’t sure what kind of stunt he was trying to pull but you were fairly certain this will probably die down after a while, once he got bored or finds something better to do.
He sauntered around the children’s section and found the book he saw you perusing that first time he came here. "Pfft, Winnie-the-Pooh", he scoffed in a murmuring volume.
But he still ended up taking a copy and flipping through it. Jungkook was focusing more on the pictures than the words, eventually he landed on one page that looked similar to what he saw you reading that day:
“All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All.
Which is why I haven't bothered you. Because you wouldn't want to waste your time hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All, would you now."
Pooh looked at Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side of Eeyore in his stick house.
Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?"
"We're sitting here with you," said Pooh...”
---
Another day. Jungkook must have gotten tired of loitering in the bookstore, so he sat on the bench in the atrium of the mall facing the store, sipping on his iced chocolate while playing with his phone.
You knocked off from work and contemplated sneaking off without him noticing but somehow you felt that would be too mean. So, you walked over and said, “Are you not leaving?”
“I’m waiting for someone”, he replied matter-of-factly still looking at his phone.
Oh, he was? Guess you weren’t the reason why he stuck around then, you were mentally reprimanding yourself for assuming.
Just then, a low and refined voice came from behind you, “Why are you waiting here, you could have just waited at the restaurant”, the man who said this walked up to Jungkook. He was middle-aged, dressed in a bespoke suit and had a pleasant disposition.
“I was waiting for this one to finish her shift”, Jungkook pointed at you while replying. So, was he waiting for you or him? This is so confusing.
“Y/N, this is my dad. Dad, you wouldn’t mind if she joins us for dinner right?”, Jungkook said.
“Nice to meet you Mr. Jeon”, you blurted out, at the same time suppressing your urge to just run away.
“Nice to meet you too young lady. We are going to the hotel’s restaurant. Care to join us, Y/N? The chef we hired there is really good”, he asked as he gave you the friendliest smile you have seen from anyone of that stature. And wait, so they own the hotel annexed to the mall too?
Once you were seated at a corner table with a superb view of the city, the manager of the restaurant came over personally with the menu.
“What would the two of you like to have today?”, Jungkook’s dad said while turning the pages.
“Jungkook always gets the grilled steak here, Sir”, the manager said confidently, “medium rare again?”, he asked. Jungkook simply nodded his head without even opening the menu.
“Oh, does he? I’ll take the lamb chop instead, what about you, Y/N?”, Jungkook’s father added.
You ordered a pasta and his dad insisted on getting everyone a cup of coffee, although you really didn’t want one when it was already dinner time. The rest of the meal was cordial. A little too cordial.
His father seemed genuinely kind, gentlemanly, fatherly, but he was as much of those things to you as he was to Jungkook; it was almost as if he treated both of you with hospitality. Your dad will probably know your favourite dish at a restaurant or if you didn’t like a particular drink. But then again, this man looks like he carries half the world on his shoulders. Maybe rich families were just like that.
At the end of dinner Jungkook’s dad said the car was ready at the foyer, he reminded Jungkook to drop you off first at your hostel and excused himself to attend to a meeting.
Jungkook and you were taking the elevator down when it stopped at a random floor. The door opened and revealed a man and a woman waiting for it. The woman was clearly older but was very attractive and you couldn’t quite guess her age, the man had his arms around her waist.
The woman paused at the sight of Jungkook in the lift, and you could feel the intensity grow in the air surrounding him. The couple entered and the door closed.
“You came here to have dinner with him?”, the woman said after a while, her words cutting the awkward air, evidently aimed at Jungkook.
“Definitely not to see you”, he replied and you could almost feel him seething.
Who was she?
That was when the lift door finally opened at the ground floor, Jungkook contemplated dragging you out of there as quickly as possible but he stopped short of grabbing your wrist. He marched out past the two strangers and you were left to try to catch up to him.
“Jungkook, Jungkook!”, the woman shouted after him. “What time are you coming home tonight?”, her steps wobbled, which could be a result of the high heels she wore or could be something else.
When you caught up to Jungkook at the car, he shoved you in by the handle of your bag, and he got in hastily after you. The car drove off before she could make it through the lobby door.
Was she his mother?
---
Two days passed after that, and with each you felt like Jungkook was different from what you thought he was.
You slowly learnt a lot more about his father; he never spoke of his mother.
His father was the idol of his childhood. Even though everyone said his father married his mother for her riches, it never felt that way to him. His father would attend Jungkook’s school events, pick him up after classes and they would often hang out at an ice cream place after that. But then when Jungkook turned eight years old, his father became the CEO of the company one day and these things stopped. He hardly even saw his father around the house anymore after that.
“You don’t blame him for priotising his work over you?”, you remember asking Jungkook once.
He conveniently pulled out a Spiderman comic from the bookshelf next to where he was leaning against, “With great power comes great responsibility, Y/N. He's to me what Peter Parker is to Mary Jane, but to the company and all the people relying on him, he’s supposed to be Spiderman.”
Jungkook never blamed his father and he learnt that riches may bring some privileges but they also come with immense burdens.
---
You were heading to lecture with Namjoon one day, and Mirae came running up to the both of you in the middle of the stairs leading to the lecture theatre.
“Have you guys seen the news? Daebak…”, she whispered.
From your expressions she could tell that you both had zero idea what she was alluding to.
“There’s so many articles up now about Jungkook’s mom, only daughter of the BH group”, Mirae moved closer to the two of you, “She’s having affairs. And yes, it’s affairs, not just one. There was apparently a singer called Julian Yoo, a trainee from some big company, can’t quite remember his name, oh and also the actor Daniel Park. And this is just apparently the tip of the iceberg. What even? Come to think of it, maybe this is why Jungkook acts this way”, Mirae was rattling on and on until she could see the look in your eyes turning annoyed at that last sentence.
“We don’t know the full picture, and even if it’s true about his mother, should we really be dragging him into this?”, you questioned.
“Even if we don’t the others will still. Wonder if he’s gonna be coming to class today after all this”, Namjoon said objectively.
You sat in the lecture theatre constantly craning your neck to see if he was coming. Just a few minutes before the lecture was due to start, Jungkook strutted in in his usual posture. A backpack over one shoulder, hands in his pockets and looking as if the entire world can come at him but he wouldn’t bat an eyelid.
The murmurs in the lecture hall became discernible, Namjoon leaned towards you and said, “Got to admire him for that couldn’t-care-less attitude he has.” Meanwhile, you watched him with worry.
He glanced at you momentarily, registering your look of concern as he sat down at his usual spot at one of the rows below.
Jungkook was in fact indifferent to what had happened, it was about time anyway. If he had no qualms about everyone calling him a trashy playboy, why would he be any more bothered by them gossiping about her? He was her son after all; promiscuity must be genetic.
Regardless, he turned his head ever so slightly towards the back row where you were seated and thought to himself, “but what great timing for this news to break.”
---
He didn’t show up at the bookstore that afternoon. After the lecture, you saw him walk out, blending into the crowd of people, and that was it.
You tried to focus on your work. There was a new title that just came out and you were busy setting up the book display.
The people who looked the calmest may bear the strongest storms within them. What if he wasn’t as indifferent to the situation as he looked on the outside? You were so deep in thought that you didn’t even notice your finger bleeding from a paper cut caused by one of the freshly-minted book covers.
“You alright there?”, your store manager asked, eyes staring down at the droplets of blood pooling at your fingertips.
You looked down and thought for a moment, “no I’m not, actually”. You took your phone out from your jeans’ pocket and decided to message Jungkook.
“Where are you?”, you actually just wanted to know this one thing. Maybe he’s fine and out partying somewhere, you hoped.
Your phone buzzed.
“Why? You worried about me?”
At least he was alive.
“Not exactly”, you typed but then deleted the message before you could send it. You were still deciding what to reply when your phone buzzed again, another message from him.
“Last room, basement, arts faculty. Come if you want, it’s fine if you don’t.”
Arts faculty? Wasn’t he in business school? It didn’t really matter because there was a more pressing question – were you going to go?
---
The room was clearly different from the other practice rooms, for the reason that it no longer resembled anything close to a practice room. Jungkook was sitting alone in the dimly lit chamber, cans of beer were strewn across the table and the floor. You walked in like you were entering a dragon’s den for the first time, trying very hard to make sure not to cause the dragon to stir.
Your shoes brushed past a crushed can and the jarring clattering noises has Jungkook looking up at you. He exuded the same vibes as the first night you met him; eyes the usual shade of darkness, moat of nonchalance and arrogance surrounding him.
He stared at you intently, and he spoke challengingly.
“Are you going to ask if I’m alright again? I’m not. So, for the second time, what are you going to do about it?”
What were you supposed to do in a time like this? What could you do for him? You walked over and sat next to him quietly.
Jungkook watched your every move closely. Were you just pitying him? Or does this mean his plan is succeeding?
You two sat in silence for a very brief moment.
“You know, Y/N, you should really take a page out of the other girls’ books. No guy will want you to just sit next to him when he is feeling down. That was not what I had in mind when I asked you what you were going to do about this”, his elbow was anchored on the armrest of the couch but his hands were waving around as he uttered those words.
He always spoke with a tinge of frivolity, you wondered whether it was his defence mechanism.
“If you called me here for that sort of reason, then I’m sorry, you may have gotten the wrong person. And honestly, I don’t know what can actually make you feel better, Jungkook, really…”
It was the first time you said his name. He was surprised that he wasn’t even getting frustrated about you rejecting his advances.
“But, if I can’t comfort you… I can try to share your pain”, you said as you held out a hand.
A beat passes.
“If that will make you feel less lonely, then take my hand.”
All he could do was stare at the hand you had extended to him. He said nothing, because what you said felt like everything.
