a lot of you guys are blaming this solely on âtiktok / twitterâ culture which is, evidently, valid [as she deleted those] however i think itâs important to reflect on your own actions as well instead of assigning blame to a faceless general group. we are all interacting with her parasocially through tumblr that still creates ïżŒa social disconnect. that is not to say, you should feel guilty⊠itâs just to say that blaming a abstract group is easy and doesnât do anything positive for the situation ïżŒïżŒïżŒ

Intro to the Extended Fett Clan (WKatMAM)
Iâm doing this so I donât have to take an unnecessarily long amount of time during Part 4 to explain the whole family to everyone. I get my second Covid shot tomorrow, so hopefully Chapter One will be up soon. Enjoy!
Clan Leaders
Nielsen Fett: Better known as 99 in canon, Nielsen goes by NiNi or baâbuir with his grandkids. Heâs a farmer, and hosts the Annual Fett Family Reunion every year. Married to Kamino. Father to Lynx, Courey, Wolffe's mom (no, I'm not revealing her name yet), Alfred (Alph), Charisma, Arla, and Jango. Grandpa to all the kids who will be listed.Â
Kamino Fett: I say screw the Kaminoans by naming the matriarch of this au after their home planet and making her love her family no matter what happens. She was a baker, passed away from old age two years before this au takes place. Used to have those grandma glasses-on-a-chain. Was blonde. Mother to Lynx, Courey, Wolffe's mom, Alph, Charisma, Arla, and Jango. Her grandkids call her KamKam or baâbuir.
Subclan One (aka some of the Commanders)
Lynx Fett: The oldest of the next generation of Fetts. He's a vet. Has a full goatee. Married to Nala Se. Father to Bly, Gree, Ponds, Keeli, Colt, and Zariza. Grandpa to Colette. More lax on his kids than his wife. Good dad, poor choice in women.
Nala Se: Geneticist (obviously lol). Very strict because "Lynx is too lax on their kids" (he's not). Mother to Bly, Gree, Ponds, Keeli, Colt, and Zariza. Grandma to Colette. Few people in the family actually like her.
Bly Secura-Fett: 27, Kindergarten teacher. Married to Aayla, father to Colette. Oldest of the next generation of Fetts/the cousins. You might recognize his username from the previous parts, Old Man Dad Bly. Ponds was the one to set it to that. Bly doesn't care enough about it negatively to switch it.
Aayla Secura-Fett: 26, Ryl Translator. Married to Bly, mother of Colette. Known for wearing her hair in braids. She's not in the cousin chat but Bly's constantly showing her screenshots of it and she enjoys it.
Colette Secura-Fett: Almost 1, a Blyla baby! So far clings to Bly more than Aayla, but that may change. Gets lots of love and snuggles from the extended fam.
Gree Fett: 25, biologist. Second oldest of the subclan and of the cousins. Still has that haircut but mainly out of spite of his brothers instead of in honor of them this time. Chat Name: Green Man.
Pontius âPondsâ Fett: 23. Heâs working to be an architect, but is currently stuck with a job heâs over-qualified for in the meantime. Known in the chat as Lakes because he thinks heâs funny sometimes. Most likely to start something in subclan one, least likely to be blamed for it... most of the time.
Keeli Fett: 21, cosmetologist. He took a different route than his brothers and went to trade school instead of a 4-year university and consequently got a job before Ponds did. Best hair in the family. Debating whether or not Greeâs haircut is a good enough reason to disown him lol. Chat Name: Keeling Over.
Colt Fett: 17, just finished his junior year of high school. Working a minimum wage summer job to help save for college. Met his best friends Havoc and Blitz in kindergarten; they all work at the same place now. Chat Name: Neigh.
Zariza Fett: 15, just finished her freshman year of high school. Only daughter in the subclan, which is both a blessing and a curse with Nala for a mom. Wants to be a photographer, has taken pictures throughout the reunions the past few years for NiNi. Has lots of blackmail on everyone as a result. Chat Name: Zzzzzz.
Subclan Two (aka the Coruscant Guard)
Courey Fett:Â Second oldest of his generation of Fetts. Heâs a bartender (and owner), and the loudest and most rambunctious of his siblings. Full beard. Married to Slyvia Fett. Father to Fox, Thorn, Jek, Rys, and Corsica. His name is vaguely based on me misspelling Coruscant many many times in the past.
Slyvia Fett: You thought Nala Se was an interesting choice in mom? This lady is a super successful but shady businesswoman. Nobody knows the specifics and theyâre not sure they want to know. Also kinda strict, but sheâs also not home often enough for it to make too much impact. Married to Courey, mother to Fox, Thorn, Jek, Rys, and Corsica. She has dirty blonde hair, which two of her kids inherited when it combined with the rare blond Fett gene. Vaguely based on Sly Moore.
Fox Fett:Â 19, just finished his freshman year of college. Perpetually tired because of homework, actual work, and the projects he choses to do. Two days older than Wolffe and reminds him often. Actually best friends with Wolffe. They go to the same university. Like Wolffe, loves his siblings but is loath to admit it. Causes more trouble than people think. Chat Name: Think Outside the Fox.
Thorn Fett: 16, just finished his sophomore year of high school. Older of the two dirty-blonds in the sub-clan. Second oldest blond of the cousins after Rex. Suspicious in how heâs so optimistic when he grew up with Fox for a brother haha. Occasionally likes to stir up trouble in the chat, especially since heâs the one who made it. Chat Name: Thorn in Your Side.
Jek Fett: 11, just finished fifth grade. His best friend is Thire. Too young for the chat, not too young to cause trouble. Like all little brothers, switches between ignoring Fox and Thorn and always trying to get their attention. Like all middle children, turns it around and also picks on Rys and Corsica for the same things Fox and Thorn use on him.Â
Rys Fett: 8, just finished second grade. Current goal in life is to catch Fox sneak-attacking him just once. Tags along with Jek most of the time, sometimes to bug him, sometimes because he thinks heâs cool. Also too young for the chat.
Corsica Fett: 7, just finished first grade. Only daughter of subclan two. The second of the dirty blonde haired kids in this subclan. Hangs out with Unique a lot at family reunions. Has the art of bugging her brothers at the most inconvenient times down. Already learning to blackmail people. Name lightly based on the correct spelling of Coruscant. Also too young for chat.
The Koons (aka our MCs! The Wolfpack)
Plo Koon: My favorite space dad haha. I think you get the gist by now. Get ready for some more puns! Definitely the type of dad to wear a fanny pack. His sunglasses are probably just transition glasses that switch too easily and he just never told anyone lol. Actually, I never mentioned it, but heâs also a social worker.
A[redacted] Koon: Our boysâ mom. Married to Plo, though she died giving birth to Comet. Twin to Alfred. Her name is a surprise for later, so hereâs her first initial, at least. Used to wear glasses or contacts, depending on the day.
Wolffe Koon:Â 19, just finished his freshman year of college. The star of the show lol aka our pov character. Loves his brothers but rarely admits it out loud. Best friend is Fox and is going to use that to his advantage for blackmail this reunion. Cousin Chat Name: Werewolf? There Wolffe! Subclan Chat Name: Howl are you? Wolfpack Chat Name: Grr.
Boost Koon: 15, just finished his freshman year of high school. The only person in the family who likes Greeâs haircut. His maroon hair is starting to grow out now. It may or may not be his turn to get lost this time... Chat Name: T-Mobile. Subclan Chat Name: Ghosty Boi. Wolfpack Chat Name: Booster Seat.
Sinker Koon: 13, just finished seventh grade and it shows. His silver hair is also starting to grow out. Gonna cause some chaos, since heâs close in age to many of the Fett cousins. Chat Name: Banana Sink. Subclan Chat Name: Hook, Line, andâ Wolfpack Chat Name: Stinker. (No, it hasnât been changed back yet.)
Comet Koon: 10, just finished fourth grade. Still obsessed with penguins. Also gonna cause some chaos with some of the cousins. Koon most likely to get hurt during the reunion by climbing on and jumping off things he shouldnât. Also too young for the chat.
Subclan Three (aka Cody + the 501st)
Alfred âAlphaâ Fett: Twin to A, younger by 5 minutes and never talks about it. Married to Sevannah. Father to Cody, Rex, Fives, Echo, Tup. Owns a gym named Triple A. Used to be a personal trainer, which is how he met Sevannah. Technically the middle child of his siblings.
Sevannah Fett: Professional and Olympic archer. Married to Alph, mother to Cody, Rex, Fives, Echo, Tup. Yes, her name comes from seventeen as in âAlpha-17.âł (Maybe not) surprisingly, the more in shape out of her and Alph since sheâs still competing lol.
Kote âCodyâ Fett: 18, just graduated high school. Planning on attending college for sports management. Twin to Rex (heâs older by 7 minutes). Got his scar while playing football or something, Iâm not really sure. Any Ghost member you can think of is probably his friend. Chat Name: *hacker voice* Iâm In.
Rex Fett: 18, just graduated high school. Planning on being an athletic trainer. Twin to Cody. Naturally blond â and I mean blond and not dirty blond. Only one of subclan three who is. Any member of Torrent thatâs not his brother is his friend. Chat Name: Jurassic Park.
Fives Fett: 13, just finished seventh grade. His full name will be revealed during Part 4. Twin to Echo (older by five minutes, yes). Wants to learn how to be a skydiving instructor solely to try to help Rex get over his fear of heights. Best friends are Domino Squad. Chat Name: Sixes.
Echo Fett: 13, just finished seventh grade. His full name will also be revealed during Part 4. Twin to Fives. Seems more chill than Fives but the reunion always proves that wrong. Best friends are Domino. Occasionally babysits the Havocs. Chat Name: ECHO Echo echo.
Tup Fett: 10, just finished fourth grade. Tup is his full name, yes. Starting to get into archery like his mom. Canon tattoo is a mole here. His hairâs down to his shoulders and super curly. Codyâs often pulling sticks out of it. Too young for the chat.
The Havocs (aka the Bad Batch)
Charisma Havoc (neĂ© Fett): Interior designer. Married to Gunner. Mother to Hunter, Cross, Wrecker, Timmy. Also on the louder end of her and her siblings. The Havocs are pretty background characters, since their kids are much younger than Wolffe and also bc the showâs still establishing things.
Gunner Havoc: Carpenter. Married to Charisma. Father to Hunter, Cross, Wrecker, Timmy. Together Charisma and Gunner could probably start an HGTV show lol. But they donât want to so they arenât. Last name comes from the Havoc Marauder (tbb's ship).
Hunter Havoc: 14, just finished eighth grade. Part of his canon tattoo is a birthmark, though not all of it. His hair is also long enough to be put into a small ponytail. Keeliâs got some cousins to teach, doesnât he lol. Chat Name: Hunter-Gatherer.
Cross Havoc: 12, just finished sixth grade. Grumpy almost-teenager. Wolffe doesnât run into him often because he tries to avoid his older cousins (well, actually, most of his cousins) the entire reunion every year. Lurks in the chat but his username is Mad (courtesy of Thorn). I shortened his name because it is an actual name and Crosshair is only a clone name.
Walter âWreckerâ Havoc: 9, just finished third grade. The older cousins claim he got his nickname in the âWrecker Incidentâ and make it out to be this overly dramatic thing that's classified to those 12 and under. In all reality, it was him accidentally crashing into a few things of his brothers when he was first learning to walk. Gree just thought it was hilarious to blow it out of proportion. Too young for the chat.
Timothy âTimmyâ Havoc: 7, just finished first grade. Wears glasses. A bit too young to have Tech as a nickname quite yet, but he definitely would in the future. Also mostly in the background, considering he's 12 years younger than Wolffe. Too young for chat.
The Concords (aka let's add some more girls to this family)
Arla Concord neé Fett: She's the only adult beside her husband that I currently don't have a job listed for, but that's because my brain won't supply one. Second youngest of her siblings. Married to Felix. Mother to Clementine, Ansonia, Unique, Majorca, Tessa, Violet. Screw canon/legends, she's still alive.
Felix Concord: Again, haven't thought of a job for him yet, but he has one. Married to Arla. Father to Clementine, Ansonia, Unique, Majorca, Tessa, Violet. Last name comes from Concord Dawn.
Clementine Concord: 12, just finished sixth grade. Wants to be an astronaut or astrophysicist one day. Spends lots of time wrangling her younger sisters. Chat Name: Orange Gal.
Ansonia Concord: 10, just finished fourth grade. Wants to be an actress, really bring those dramatic Fett genes into play lol. Spends lots of time bugging Clementine and bossing around her younger sisters. Too young for the chat.
Unique Concord:Â 7, just finished first grade. Wants to be a doctor, spends lots of time hanging out with Ansonia. The two of them could probably do a pretty accurate hospital soap opera without prompting or knowing haha. Hangs with Corsica a lot at reunions, though. Yeah, idk where her name came from either. Dirty-blonde hair. Too young for the chat (duh).
Majorca Concord: 6, just finished kindergarten. Still learning basic writing and loves it so much she wants to be an author. Named after the city in Spain on accident â I totally didnât realize that was why her name seemed familiar until like 2 months after I named her. Also too young for the chat or to appear much in the story.
Quintessa âTess/Tessaâ Concord: 5, preschooler. The other blonde kiddo. Picks on Greeâs hair without prompting from any cousins or sisters. Likes to play pretend with Majorca when they can. Also likes to draw stars and castles and such often. Obviously too young for the chat, appears slightly more because of her natural roasting abilities.Â
Violet Concord: 3, maybe a preschooler? Again, doesnât really appear much. Hangs out a bit with Boba and Tessa when the family gets together. Very very obviously too young for the chat.
Subclan Four (the OG Fetts)
Jango Fett: People usually make him one of the dads or the grandpa, but nah, he gets baby of his generation status. I wanted to keep with the âArla is his older sisterâ thing but sheâs the second youngest so heâs the youngest. Has been super mysterious about his life from the second he moved out but still shows up to family events. Knows who Bobaâs mother is but refuses to tell. Father of Boba (obviously).
Boba Fett: 4, preschooler. Like I said above, hangs with Tessa and Violet during family events. More likely to accidentally reveal details about Jangoâs life than Jango. Surprise baby but not for Jango. Jango knew. The family didnât know until Jango showed up with infant Boba to a family event and went âthis is Boba, no questions will be answered.â Also very obviously too young for the chat.
---
And thatâs the extended Fett clan! Feel free to ask questions, Iâve got plenty of information about (most of) them and their roles in this au.

Pulse - Ectoberweek 2020
Another day, another AU from my ideas file. Warning for general Accident-related spookiness. Also look itâs the fic where I let my followers decide if I was gonna write Tucker POV or Sam POV.
Rating:Â Gen Warnings:Â - Genre:Â Friendship Words:Â 2,395 Additional Tags:Â Alternate Universe, Ghosts
[AO3] [FFN]
---
âSo,â Tucker said, before falling silent. Hoped to prompt one of the others into speaking up instead.
âSo,â Danny echoed. âWhat happened?â
âWhy are you asking us?â Tucker flailed upright so he could look at Danny. âYouâre the one who went into the Portal!â
âWell, yeah, butââ He gestured vaguely. âYou two are acting weird. What happened after the Portal turned on?â
âWhat, you donât remember?â Sam leaned forward, frowning at Danny.
Danny scoffed. âObviously not.â
How could he not remember? That heâd come out of the Portal looking like heâd died, like the perfect image of a ghost? âDude, youâre joking, right? How could you not have noticed?â
âNoticed what? Come on, just tell me!â
âHe really doesnât remember.â Sam reached over to tug on Tuckerâs leg. âTuck, what if itâs like a possession thing?â
âItâs not a possession thing,â Tucker dismissed immediately. âWhat kinda possession would change the host into a ghost as well. Itâs justâŠâ He trailed off.
Danny made a face. âI donât think I like where this is heading. What do you guys mean, a possession thing? What happened, seriously?â
Honestly, Tucker didnât think he could explain. And based on the look Sam was throwing him, neither could she. Still, he cleared his throat and tried. âWell, it was just⊠weird, yâknow? When you came out of the Portal. You werenât really yourself.â
âYour colors were all weird,â Sam continued at Dannyâs quirked eyebrow. âYour suit had gone black with white gloves, your hair was crazy pale, and your eyes had gone green. And,â she flapped her hand, âthere was also the fact that you glowed.â
âI⊠glowed?â Danny repeated, slowly and questioningly. âWhat, like a ghost?â
âExactly like a ghost,â Tucker confirmed, crossing his arms and staring at Danny. He looked just like he always did. Warm and fleshy and not at all like what theyâd seen just before. âAnd the way you were looking at us, youâd think that you didnât recognize us. Either of us.â
âWeird.â Danny frowned, one hand closing around the wrist of the other. Almost like a nervous gesture, except one that Danny had never shown before. âI donât⊠remember any of that. But clearly it went away. Right?â
âYeah, no, exactly.â Tucker nodded quickly, uncrossing his arms so he could mimic an explosion. âThere was a flash of light and then suddenly, there you were again. Back to normal.â
Danny hummed. âI⊠think I remember the flash of light? Maybe. But I thought it was the after-effects of the Portal.â
âWho knows, maybe it was.â Tucker shrugged, mentally crossing his fingers and hoping to god it was. âA one-off caused by the ectoplasmic exposure, or whatever.â
âWeâll need to keep an eye on it anyway,â Sam pointed out, shifting her eyes from Tucker back to Danny. âIt might not happen again, but we donât know what that was, let alone what kind of effects it mightâve had.â
âRight.â Danny nodded, once, strongly. âYou two are here for the rest of the weekend anyway. Weâll see after that.â
---
The rest of the day passed by normally, and briefly, Tucker entertained the hope that it really had been a one-off. But during the night he woke to a bright flash of light, and lo and behold, there was the ghostly version of Danny again.
âMan, really,â he grumbled, rubbing the heel of his hand over his eyes to try and get the grit out. âYouâre bright as hell, dude, couldnât you have done this during the day?â
Dannyâs glow brightened in response, his vivid green eyes narrowing in a frown. âIâm sorry?â
âSure donât sound very sorry.â And he didnât. Mostly, he just sounded very confused. âGo wake up Sam, will you? If Iâm suffering we all are.â
A slow, almost deliberate blink was his response, before Danny turned away to look at Sam. He shifted closer, his gaze wandering back to Tucker. Then, still watching Tucker, Danny stretched out his leg and kicked Sam in the shoulder.
Sam grunted, hand swatting at Dannyâs leg. âI will kill you.â
âUm,â Danny said, pulling his leg back towards himself. And then continued pulling himself away from Sam, actually lifting off of his bed entirely, until he floated a foot or so above it.
âIf you fall Iâm not gonna catch you, dude,â Tucker told him, even though he probably would try to catch him, if Danny had gone high enough that he might hurt himself. Still, he didnât need to know that. âDo you even know what youâre doing?â
âYeah?â Danny turned to frown at him again. âYeah, definitely.â He sounded plenty convinced, too.
Didnât sound nearly as confident when Sam grabbed his arm suddenly, lunging up from the floor where she had been lying. Danny yelped, tugging himself free with a bout of something which Tucker was sure was ghostly intangibility.
âAlright, thatâs cheating,â Sam claimed, opening her hand, still holding it out in Dannyâs direction. âGive me your hand.â
âWhy?â he asked her, slowly moving the hand back in her direction, eyes narrowed. They glowed brightly in the dark of the room. âWhatâre you gonna do?â
She snatched his hand up, fingers burrowing past the hem of his white glove. âChecking something.â
Oh. She was⊠oh.
âNo pulse,â she reported, before moving her fingers to tug on the edge of Dannyâs glove. âAnd this seems to be part of his body.â
âWell,â Tucker said, before pausing to swallow past the block in his throat. âI guess his pulse will come back when he goes back to normal? He seems pretty ghostly right now.â
Sam hummed, pinching the sleeve of Dannyâs jumpsuit, ignoring the look Danny was throwing her way. âThe clothes is a ghost thing too, I think. The Fentons always claimed that their shapes were simple and only had one layer, or something like that.â
âRight, yeah, I remember that.â Maybe they shouldâve looked into the whole ghost thing a little more. Danny was looking very much like a ghost right now, and Tucker kinda wished he knew more.
Like if his friend was gonna be okay.
âI donât understand whatâs happening,â Danny said, flat and a little hopelessly. He jangled the arm Sam was holding, but didnât seem very intent on throwing her off.
âWelcome to the club,â she said with a snort, pinching him again. âYou donât feel this?â
âNo?â Danny frowned at her, utter confusion clear on his face. âAm I supposed to?â
âSomething here seems weird,â Tucker commented. He paused. âWeirder than it already was. Danny, man, what is up with you?â
âWho, me?â Danny asked, twisting around to look at Tucker again. âI really donât know whatâs happening.â
Sam paused, releasing her pinching grip but still holding on to Dannyâs arm. âDanny, what are you saying?â
âDanny?â he repeated, tone questioning. âWhy are you calling me that?â
Tucker felt his heart stop. He stared at Danny, incredulously, but there wasnât even the slightest hint of joking.
âBecause⊠itâs your name?â he managed, feebly, not looking away from Danny. âYouâre our best friend, Danny Fenton. Donât you remember?â
The ghost of his best friend blinked at him, then at Sam. âI⊠no? I donât remember anything.â
âSooo⊠About the Fentonâs theory that ghosts donât remember anything,â Sam said, voice quiet. Uncharacteristically shaken. âI mean⊠Before, Danny didnât remember this either. Itâs like⊠two separate states?â
âOh, yeah, I remember now!â Danny exclaimed, still looking at Sam. âI saw you two earlier, briefly! But then light flashed, and now Iâm here.â He looked around, curiously. âWhere is here?â
Well, way to drive the point home, buddy. âOkay, so. The accident made it so that heâs, what, both human and ghost, and the two states just kind of switch around? Fuck, Sam.â
âI know,â she hissed back, cautiously releasing Dannyâs arm. âStay in your room, okay Danny?â Seeing him frown, she added, âThatâs this room. Stay in this room, okay?â
âSure,â he agreed easily, floating off to peer at some of the decorations Danny had in his room.
âDo you think we should tell his parents?â Tucker asked, scooting closer to Sam, keeping an eye on Danny. Or, Dannyâs ghost, he supposed, since they apparently werenât the same person. âI mean, if this starts happening more⊠He wonât be able to recognize them, or convince them of being Danny.â
Sam made a face. âYeah, but⊠I dunno, Tuck, what if they try to hurt him? Experiment on him?â
They watched Danny poke around in his own room for a moment. Quietly, Sam continued, âMaybe he can hold it off. He didnât shift until now, right? Maybe Dannyâs control slipped while he was asleep. If we tell him to be careful heâll stay out of trouble, right?â
âI donât know, Sam.â Tucker sighed, deeply and wearily. âI really donât know. Man, weâre just fourteen. Why are we dealing with this kinda stuff?â He looked over at Samâs stricken face. âI meanâ Itâs not our fault. Itâs not anyoneâs fault, okay? Donât blame yourself. We couldnât have known.â
âYeah, butââ
âNo, Sam. Either everyoneâs to blame for this, or no one is.â He pointed at Dannyâs ghost, who was now trying to peel off one of the glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. âHe couldâve refused to go in. I couldâve stopped him. His parents couldâve done a better job of locking up the lab, or the Portal, or anything. This isnât just your fault, okay? Stop blaming yourself.â
Sam hummed, a disbelieving sound, but she didnât protest, so Tucker would consider it a win.
Silence fell again as they watched the ghost frown at the sticky star on his hand. Then, almost hesitantly, he stuck the star to his chest.
âMan,â Tucker said, then paused when he realized he didnât know where heâd been going with that sentence.
âYeah,â Sam agreed quietly. Then, raising her voice some, she called over to Danny. âHey, arenât you tired or something? Letâs go to sleep, Danny.â
Again, bright green eyes turned to them. âIâm not tired,â he said simply. âGhosts donât sleep.â Then he frowned, and added, âI thought I wasnât Danny? Not really?â
âSorta kinda.â Tucker shrugged. âYouâre like, his ghost, I guess? You donât want to be Danny?â
âSeems confusing,â the ghost admitted, lowering himself until he floated at eye level to them. âHe was Danny first, right? And Iâm just his ghost. So I could be like⊠Phantom, or something.â
âPhantom,â Tucker echoed, dryly. âYou really want to go by a synonym of ghost?â
The ghost in question shrugged. âWhy not? And you said myâhisâlast name was Fenton, yeah? So itâs kind of a pun.â
Tucker groaned, even as Sam laughed, softly. âI shouldâve figured, man. Your love for puns is immortal and undying.â
Phantom grinned at him, revealing green gums and pointed fangs, which Tucker somehow hadnât noticed before. âWell, something had to carry over, yeah?â
âI guess,â Tucker agreed, sounding much more disgruntled than he felt. It was weird, yes, but it was also kinda nice, to see a little more Danny in Phantom. âLook, you might not need sleep because youâre a ghost, but Sam and I do. Â Can we trust you to stay in this room and out of trouble?â
âOf course,â Phantom immediately assured him, before pausing. âUm. What constitutes as trouble, exactly?â
âStaying in this room should be good enough for now,â Sam said, gesturing around them. âBut if anyone who isnât us comes in, or knocks⊠I dunno, hide? Go invisible, maybe, if you can maintain it for long enough.â
âYour parents are ghost hunters. If they see you, theyâll probably try to hurt you,â Tucker tagged on. âYou look just like Danny, but theyâre not gonna stop and consider that, especially if you wonât have his memories to convince them.â
Phantomâs expression grew serious, and he nodded. âGot it. Stay here, stay out of sight.â
âTry not to be too loud, as well. Making a lot of noise will probably lead to them coming here to make sure weâre doing alright.â Sam narrowed her eyes. âAnd weâll be trying to sleep, and loud noises donât help with that.â
He nodded again. âStay here, stay out of sight, donât be loud. Anything else?â
âIf you think youâre gonna switch back to Danny, maybe try to get yourself back to the bed? But other than that, no, I guess that thatâs it.â Tucker sighed, sitting down on his pile of blankets. âGood night, Phantom.â
âGood night, Tucker, Sam,â he replied, floating away a little but not taking his eyes off of them. Apparently he was curious to see what sleep meant. Great. Brilliant.
Tucker shook his head, tucking himself back into his nest of blankets. From where he laid, he could see Sam do the same.
When they both remained still for a while, Phantom lost interest, going back to checking out the room. His room.
Through squinted eyes, Tucker watched him. Phantom hadnât even noticed that he hadnât taken off his glasses. Didnât know the importance of it, probably.
On the other side of the room, Tucker could see Sam watching as well. They both knew damn well that they wouldnât get a minute of sleep, not while Danny was⊠not Danny. While Phantom was around.
Tucker wasnât sure what heâd been expecting from Phantom. He seemed to follow the Fentonsâ ghost rules pretty closely, except he didnât appear malevolent in the least. Even while he thought that no one was watching him, he did as had been asked: remained in the room, remained quiet.
Admittedly he didnât do a great job of getting himself back to the bed when he shifted back, because light flashed and Danny Fenton collapsed onto the floor with an uncomfortably loud thud, but, well. He might not have noticed it was coming.
Tucker exchanged a grimace with Sam, then both of them got up to check over their best friend. Danny was fast asleep, grumbling under his breath when they nudged him. He would probably have a bruise from the landing, but hey. Couldâve been worse.
Wrapping his fingers around Dannyâs ankles, Tucker watched Sam grab Dannyâs wrists, and they lifted him back to the bed. And when they stepped away, Sam nodded at him, and said, quietly, âHeâs got a pulse.â
Well. Tucker certainly slept better afterwards.

sins of my youth. 020
Billy Hargrove x OC! Evie Fenny~ Also posted to my AO3
Summary: It was common knowledge that Billy Hargrove hated Hawkins. Hated Cherry Lane. Even loathed the strange girl next door. Evie Fenny wasnât too fond of the chaotic Cali transfer either. An awful high school tradition sparks a chain of events that changes everything, ultimately bringing two frayed souls together.

Chapter 20: Rose Tint My World
âHold still, Iâll poke your eye again.â
âI canât breathe, youâre killing me.â Came a sniffled whine.
  âSuch a baby. You asked.â
âI said I was curious after you put the gunk on my nails!â
âThat gunk was a great color on you. You whine just like your big brother.â Carol had Maxâs face clamped in her grip as she applied mascara. âDonât blink, you'll smear it.â
âEvie, sheâs killing me,â Max lamented aloud. âThis is not worth it.â Evie just laughed, setting a bowl of pretzels aside. Carol flicked a mirror up to let Max see her handiwork. âWhoa...Itâs not terrible.â She gruffed in a mumble, tilting her head to see each angle. "Kinda like Madonna."
âIâll take it.â Carol stole some M&Ms from another dish as they shared a spot on Heatherâs fuzzy carpet. A movie rolled on in the corner TV.
Max about howled when Heather came in from the bathroom, face covered in green.
  âMonster!â
âItâs a face-mask!â Heather planted her hands on her hips, prompting more laughter. âYouâll be more into them once your body really changes.â
âGirls are way scarier than boys.â Max poked at her blushed cheek which had Carol smacking her hand away. Evie was draped across the bottom of the bed in her robe and nightie, half-watching the TV. âCan you do a zombie make-up?â
  Carol gave a snort.
  âI can do anything. kid.â
âEves, you want another piece of pizza?â Heather crossed with the box.
âIâm so full.â Evie shook her head.
  âYou had like one piece.â
âI ate a big lunch. And lots of pretzels.â Evie snatched the pretzel bowl again for good measure. Truthfully, her appetite had been up and down lately. Mostly down. What with the pangs in her stomach that always passed and⊠âYou sound like my mother.â
âShe was...extra peppy at the salon today. My mom and I got our monthly trim.â
âProbably some guy sheâs seeing, itâll pass and another will come. Men are like Kleenex to her. Soft, strong, and disposable.â Evie shrugged to pluck up a magazine.
âHey,â Max began as Carol fussed over her, âso I didnât want to make a thing of it, but my mom keeps insisting. My birthday party is coming. She and Neil saved so I could have it just at the roller rink and...they said I could invite whoever I wanted. But, I canât ask the guys to come. So I figured Iâd ask El. Sheâs really cool. But, maybe if you guys wanted to come? You can bring boys and pretend youâre not even at my party if itâs not your thing. I just-â
âMax, weâd love to come.â Heather piped up first. âEvie and I rule the rink too.â
âI look very cute in skates,â Carol agreed with a twitching smirk. âI'm in. Iâll bring Tommy, he sucks and heâll fall down a bunch. We'll pretend we ran into each other so your stepdad can get the stick out of his ass.â
âBilly has to go too cause Neil says itâs a family event.â Max turned to Evie. âI think heâd be happier with you there.â
âI think Billy and I both are fine being there for you. I had my fourteenth at the rink too. Itâll be fun.â Evie beamed, legs up to sway idly. âPlus we havenât met the Chiefâs kid. Sheâs home-schooled, right?â
âYeah, she might be joining us in school next year.â Max stayed still for Carolâs brush. âDepends. She was uh...adopted under weird circumstances. Youâll like her. I taught her how to do that felting thing because of you and she made this funny one of her dad.â
âIâll bet Hopper loved that.â Evie winked.Â
âHeâs kind of a babe in like a scruffy, rugged way,â Carol remarked. "Strong mountain man type."
âEw. Heâs so old.â Max reeled back to laugh.
âIâm just saying! I like a man in uniform. He rocks the khaki.âÂ
âThe moms in town do eat him up.â Heather shrugged, joining Evie on the bed with a handful of candy. âWe all have our strange crushes. I like high cheek-bones. Guys with a little Bowie. Evie? You got one?â
âGia Carangi even if she isnât modeling any more, I love her face.â Evie was flicking pages without looking. Howls from the TV went ignored through the chatter.
âI called that. Fenny being into ladies. Try Iman.â Carol winked which earned her a look as if she hadnât planted a kiss on Evie in a fit of rage.
âPeople say Billyâs pretty like a girl.â Max had added which got the other girls giggling.Â
âI like this one, weâre so keeping her.â Carol got up to root for a bag of chips, popping them open. âLike the zombie face better?â
âI still look too pretty.â Max appeared more goth than zombie.
âYou are pretty. Deal with it. We redheads stick together.â Carol stole Evieâs magazine. âLet us know when the party is, weâll be there.â
Max looked at the three older girls squished together on Heatherâs bed. Chattering and supporting. Happy to have her around.
A bright smile touched her face for the first time since Neil Hargrove walked into her home.Â
** ** **Â
Most days, all it felt like was floating. Floating through her house. Through Hawkins. Up and down streets. Through school. A stunning illusion she pulled like wool over her dark eyes.
A woman in rippling silks walking endless halls toward a great, cherry red door at the end, but the door gets farther away and she's thrilled to continue on even still. Feather wings glittering to unfold from her back because heaven's light is beyond the door. Crystalline eyes with their hold. Waiting for her. The sky awaits her with caressing clouds. Opulent gold sun rays and twinkling stars when the world lies down.
Evie knew she was too big for her wings most days. Too heavy to leave the Earth.
Knew in her beating heart of hearts that was the first thing people think when they see her. This magnificent soul with drive and neon and talent reduced to a single shrewd glance. And they don't think twice until she's something vaguely sexual. Something marketable you can package and process and sell to the last drop.
Easier to stomach something uncomely if you can slide into it ruthlessly to rut. They always come like animals, wailing as a banshee would to get off better than they ever will in their small lives. They eat it up. Cover it in sweat and regret and blame.
These things that hang as little weights on her heartstrings swinging back and forth. They make her not want to attempt extending those wings to fly. Fear of heads shaking in judgement. Fear of looking uglier. More foolish for even trying. Poor thing.
All because of one glance that couldn't be bothered to see worth in another human life. Sometimes Evie wanted to be skinny not because of beauty, but because she'd get a privilege pass to exist in this world.
They think she shouldn't dress the way she does. She's probably lazy and self loathing because of added pounds. She has no real aspirations or means to achieve them. Those eyes that watch her eat. That shift away before they decide on another seat because the one open next to her just isn't right. They glare because of the extra room she might take up. Even sharing a few cordial words with fat girls seemed to be a task.
Evie always notices and does the polite thing pretending she doesn't. She knows what her body looks like, no need to point out the obvious.
Strange, how these snap judgements, these eyes that don't look twice; can villainize a body utterly. A body. Flesh, bone, and muscle. We're all made in heaven's image. All destined for paths we seek to control. Superiority should have been an illusion. But no, too much or too little, your worth dips low. Fetishes and internalized hatred for things that were shaped and colored differently. Blame.
But, some days, when the wind soars just right...just strong enough...Evie can spread and illuminate. See the births and deaths of a million stars. Drop the little weights to feel the winds between her fingers. In her curls. In her wings. Feel her feet leave the floor for just a few fleeting seconds.
The fleeting seconds of soaring always seem so worth it against a world of unsightly aches. Against snap judgements she can toss back to live in a flower petal haze.
Evie tried hard to live in those moments when they flashed into her. Spotlights. Butterflies delicately landing on her flesh to open and close their stained glass wings for kisses. Evie felt crushed utterly in the most decadent way.
Billy's soft lips on her neck to get lost in the pulse. Deft fingers that would push up her clothing as he moved in her. Eyes that wanted to see her. All of her. The prayers he could whisper against heating skin.
A lot could be said about him. But, Billy was always happy to see her and that alone was air spinning into gold. His eyes would light up. Lips twitching. She could hear the single beat that his heart skipped. Even if they didn't speak, they felt this awareness for each other in the vicinity. Truly magic.
Those eyes. That love of a face. Always staring pointedly to read her up and down. Always plucking the weights from her heart by listening. Always unafraid to touch her. Evie hoped she returned that. She really did.
Fleeting seconds began to linger between them. Seeping slow and saccharine as fresh pouring honey.
Sneaking away on walks while he let her hold his hand. Flirtation against school lockers that ended in several 'just one more' kisses. Double dates to the movies with Tommy and Carol. Sitting separately to make out.
Driving up near Loverâs Lake to kiss in a parked Camaro while the sun laid itself down to sleep. Fumbling playfully to undress and explore. Watching the construction of a coming mall with Slurpees from the gas station. Tongues and lips colored all artificial cherry and strawberry.
Evie would stretch her wings completely. Let Billy admire them until the world was all satin rose-tinted. She could forget her urges and worries and insecurities. All together. This was fine.
She was fine. More then fine.
He so liked to admire her wings. Pleasure crushed in as she moaned. Let his fingers explore contours and notches untouched before. Billy would take those prayers on his lips and drape them over her body. Spell them between fleshy thighs. Pulling more fleeting seconds for himself too.
They could roll around under sheets and not worry about anything else. Have conversations that always felt silly and wonderful and weighted because they both mattered to someone so ardently. That alone was an ocean both could sink into.
Something beautiful to behold. The real vision behind the great red door. Your soul mattering.
Evie was in a bubble with Billy Hargrove. A stupid, dopey look on her face when Mona settled dinner down one evening. Steam rising from a huge pot.
âGoing out later?â Evie began to create sound or she'd be lost. "You colored your hair brown again."
âNeeded another change. Ah, I'm going out just with Karen and Claudia. Dessert and wine night. I asked Susan but that poor thing keeps standing me up. Did you finish Maxâs gift for her party?â Mona scooped up huge portions in a bowl that Evie would only be prodding at.
âYeah, itâs set. Turned out perfect. Sheâs not much for jewelry but I think a personalized tie dye shirt will be fun. Might look cool while skateboarding. I also have that goody bag of sweets for her to fill up on we made.â Evie reminded herself to pick up her spoon. Took a few bites.
âYouâre not scarfing it down like usual, you love my crawfish soup.â
âItâs delicious, I just had a big lunch.â A lie. Evie pressed herself to eat quicker, tearing a piece of fresh bread to chew. Thing was, she wanted to eat. She wanted to eat so badly despite the sickness welling inside her. The heavy ache made it a task. Mona eyed her daughter there. âMy stomach's in knots a lot, just school stuff.âÂ
âWell, you are a senior.â Mona pushed her own soup around. âI havenât been around as much as Iâd like to be. Just the salon and I met-â
âI get it.â Evieâs lips spread in a flash, not wanting her mother to finish that sentence. âIâm with friends a lot and I keep busy with my music and the cat. I even wrote a new song.â
âThatâs two this week, you. Strumming along blissfully.â Mona gushed. âWhatever has you all creative and dewy, chase it.â Silverware clicked around and Evie stared at her dish. A broader smile crossed.
  "I will."
  âWhatâs it called?â
  âOcean Eyes.âÂ
Evie could be pretty transparent in the early stages of a relationship.
These short weeks in with Billy. Lyrics flooded free. Sometimes he liked to watch her write and strum when they hung out. Trips to the lounge where she worked other nights got him a full show, but not of her original stuff. Songs marched forth.
  âOcean Eyes.â
  âCupid and Psyche.â
  âHoney Stardust.â
  âNeon-Tinted Hearts.â
Rock. Pop. Lush and obscene with her glowing heartstrings. She wrote them for Fredrick too when they got together.
  âDoll Joints.â
  âLollipop Lolita.â
  âPrince Charming.â
After dinner, Evie stole a notebook filled with her every sinful lyrical confession of her time with Fredrick Bowers. Burnt it in an empty pot out back until Billy wandered out the back steps of his place. Asking her if she was trying to set the neighborhood on fire.
âHow can I help?â Heâd snarked while the sky went all pretty peach fuzz. Evie just laughed and never explained what sheâd burnt or why it felt this cathartic to watch the smoke rise toward a falling sun. She figured maybe this was the day she'd stop eating foreign and sharp objects. She could do it. She was happier. Lighter. It had to stop.
It had to. She couldn't think about this haze shattering, it hurt too deep.
Billy used the flame to light his cigarette comically and kissed her before inhaling the smoke.Â
âCan we take a drive? Or walk if youâre low on gas?â
âLetâs walk, I got some cash doing my odd jobs for the damn neighbors, but I need it to last a bit longer with Maxâs birthday. Got her this new board she was too chickenshit to beg our parents for.â
âArenât you a darling big brother?â Evie crossed her arms to follow him when the flame dwindled low. They went around the house to the front, started down the street. âIris has some hours for me that next Saturday night.â
âYou going to tell your mom about the secret job thing?â Billy inhaled and let smoke billow up into the afternoon light. They walked along Cherry Lane. Not touching. Counting steps while their shadows cast and the streetlights came up. A brisk night loomed, spring begging to creep through the month of March.Â
âI figured I could this summer. Around graduation. Just say I got something bigger since Iâm eighteen and Iris can get me steadier hours. Gigs day or night. Maybe Iâll get to host a couple more drag shows. I miss those damn girls, the funniest performers know. I'll just let my mom down easy about the receptionist thing, hopefully sheâs fine with it. Make it sound like I took initiative cause I'm a big girl.âÂ
âAnd your grand singer plans?â He liked to ask about her and hang upon the syllables.
âStill up in the air. Iâm taking the year off to work and write. Try for a talent agent or manager. I can record maybe...try to get airtime. Thereâs this contest thing, they do it every year and the winners always do well. But, Iâm honestly too afraid to ask my mom about it just yet. Iâm saving though here and there.â Evie beamed. âYou? Summer and on.â
She was clearly asking if he was sticking around for summer.Â
âOdd lawn, house, and car jobs are getting me by. This whole street is a mess and the moms in town like to watch me work."
  "Yikes."Â
"It means better pay and tips. Iâm taking Heather up on her lifeguard offer this summer. I'll save up, Dad's already going to be asking for rent when I graduate."
  "Shit."
"Yeah. Donât wanna bank on that mall theyâre opening with all the other little shits trying to get jobs first.â Billy leaned back to let the cooler air kiss his face, sighing before he tossed his smoke out.Â
Evie came to the end of the street near the forest, swayed around a streetlamp like she was in an old Hollywood flick. Dreaming long and endless. Sometimes she worried so often that she wasn't living. Just dreaming it all away. Maybe a center line was possible.
Maybe she'd be able to soar over it all.
Billy waited for her to swing back around it before he pressed into her for a slow, lingering kiss. Even better, maybe they both were sharing a dream. Making it of something stronger.
âSo, how am I doing?â He joked lighter. Evie gripped the lamp to stay level, head tilting. âTwo weeks in, almost three. This whole situation.â
âSituation.â Evie mused, slyly hiding half her face behind the lamp to hum. The shadowy starlet of a femme fatale she loved to watch on television with her mother. Glinting. Dangerous. "This whole situation?" She lingered to sigh it even slower.
"You and me." He'd sounded out, drawing nearer. "Us..." Evangeline, always the playful nymph, flitted off playfully. Spinning the other way to walk along so Billy came to her side easily.
âI think youâre doing fine." She tapped her chin. "What about me? Evaluate my performance.âÂ
âAh. In a sea of slithery tadpoles, youâre a goddamn firecracker.â Heâd laughed and Evie followed, covering her lips with one hand.
âI donât know how any of that correlates or makes sense, but Iâll take it.â
âNeither do I. Just made it up to see you do that. The scrunchy thing you do when youâre too happy or upset with me.â Billyâs nose crinkled as he grinned there. Evie came up to peck his freckles.
âYouâre a total sap, Hargrove.â Evie continued, hands clasped behind her back before she inhaled the air. âLetâs hit that mini mart nearby. Iâm craving a Dr. Pepper. Buy you a soda. Itâs my turn.â
âNo, it isnât. Youâre just being too nice again,â Billy remarked, feet shifting slower as they crossed the street. âI canât take you fancy places.â
âI donât need to go to fancy places, I just like hanging out with you wherever.â Evie turned her head to see him. âWeâre both poor, we make due. Summer will be better. We can just work and...figure this out. I like it right now though, so donât worry because I know how you shiver in those boots.â
  She pondered it.
âDo you like it?â Evie offered quieter, earning Billyâs eyes searching her expression. Lip twitching, he tossed his arm around her. Brought Evie taut into his frame with an easier grin so they could keep walking toward the whirling, illuminated sign in the distance.
âYeah, I like it.â He decided. âI like you plenty. What's not to like, Evangeline?â His free hand gestured out and Evie beamed to point at that darling face. Her Eros. Encouraging her wings to unfold without pressure.
"Wow, you're getting better and better at that." A beat. "Making me blush without rolling my eyes."
"Please, Angel, your knees quiver every time I hit you with this smile. You might as well toss off the panties for me." For good measure, he flashed it and Evie hid from his absolute burning charm. Cheeks felt that fire bloom and billow.
A car hurried past them. Sweeping budding flowers and loose leaves about. Delicate, they danced. Trees wobbled back and forth to the wind picking up. Evie stayed looking away to smile that time. Knew this wind would carry her easily.
"Did you have a best friend back in California?" She moved her arm around his back as they went.Â
"I don't know. Guess I had a few in orbit."
"Am I your best friend here?" She piped back up and Billy slowed to glance, chuckling.
"I thought you and I were avoiding labels."
  "It's different." Came the protest.
"No, it isn't." He paused. "Heather's your best friend."
"Yeah, but I figured I could have more than one. Perfectly carved places for each." Evie shifted in front of him, hands smoothing up Billy's shoulders to clasp fingers round his neck. Blue eyes glittered to search.
"You trying to push some admission outta me, Fenny?"
Lashes batted with all the innocence they could hold.
"Just admit it, Hargrove," she pulled him down for a lip lock, pecking his jaw and cheeks until he broke to laugh and hold her at bay. One brow lifted. "It'll be our dirty little secret."
"Fine. Only cause you twisted my arm about it and it gets you hot. You are my very," he palmed her bottom to make her gasp in one motion, "very best friend. Happy?" Billy stole a kiss when she was still dumbfounded, molding their frames together.
"Maybe I am." Evie sighed, sounding too raw and honest about it. She came out to see his eyes there. Tried to read them. Billy blinked to say something else.
âSo, you're already thinking about graduation and summer, huh? Moving quick.â
âIâm optimistic is all. Itâs a rare thing with me so I'm just enjoying it. Iâm not used to happy and good.â Evie got cheeky to hide anything else, winking over her shoulder before she went inside the tiny store.
Fluorescent lights washed out too many colorful packages. They picked cold cans of soda and bright yellow packs of Jujyfruit candies to curb a sweet craving. Billy gripped the paper bag in one fist and Evie snatched his free hand when they got outside.
âCâmon!â She picked up the pace. âLetâs catch the bus to the other side of town.â
âBilly Hargrove doesnât take the bus. Itâs all full.â Heâd complained, still rushing after her to the stop.
âTry something new.â Evie was giggling, tugging at him to get on.
With the bus full of residents leaving work, they took some standing room with a group up front. Fingers curled into the handles above, swaying closer together due to the rocking and crowding. A hard turn sent Evie into Billyâs chest, her hand sprang out over his shoulder to catch the bar just above his head.
âTrying to jump my bones in public, little Miss Fenny?â He feigned a look of awe, brows lifting playfully. His free arm slipped around the small of Evieâs back, bracing her there into his marble frame. âYou know how much easier it is if you just ask, Angel?â
Evie wanted to scoff. Wanted to scrunch that annoyed look she was known for. Wanted to send him to the floor and kiss him for miles and miles. But, she just stood there in the dim, flickering bus lights. Watched his expression relax. Not really breathing until she reminded herself.Â
Billy seemed to remember as well. At the back and forth shifting of the vehicle, they squished together. Forcing looks away to see the path again. Billy pushed his thigh further between her legs. Both of them idly rubbing together now. Evie felt the heat crawl up her cheeks, lungs tremoring. Billyâs fist holding the bag shifting a little lower on her back, firm and scalding hot.Â
She peered up at his jawline. Looked away. Felt Billyâs eyes wander back after before he flickered elsewhere. Denim pushed against denim. Billy hitched this breath as if he might whimper. Swallowed it down. Hips swaying back and forth and back again. A thumb pushed deftly into her back. Evie shifting in, lips parting. Trembling as Billy turned his head to see her centimeters from him.Â
âThis is our stop.â Sheâd said in his ear. Leaning flush into him to pull the cord down. Billy inhaled the amber. Brushed his nose into her own while she came back out.
âDonât wanna stop.â His freckles looked especially glowy outlined in a rare blush. The bus skidded and Evie veered back with some amusement. Brown eyes casting Billy up and down before she skipped off in a hurry, leaving him to chase her because heâd always chase her. Bag still wrinkled around Billyâs fist, he caught up with her. Under the streetlamps surrounded by dancing moths.Â
  âWe near Loverâs Lake?â
âYeah, the park nearby. Figured some loitering would do us good.â Evie stepped across the grass and sand. Listened to the dark structures creak. âCâmon. I love the swings.âÂ
She plopped back into one, legs kicking some before Billy joined her. He cracked one can of soda to offer it, feet shifting over the sand to sway closer together. Chains creaking.Â
They clicked drinks and guzzled fizz before Evie snagged the candy out. Stealing a few chewy pieces. The bright box got passed back and forth during a comfortable silence. Billy watched Evie as she observed the moon there.Â
âDo you know any constellations?â Sheâd asked quieter, forcing him out of the daze. Curls caught the illumination with stars dotting her dark eyes.Â
âNot really.â He took the candy back as she swallowed a piece.
âYou see that crooked line? Those four little guys, they call that...Salemâs Lot. And...â Evie touched her lips, pointing again. âThose two bright boys there. Called Shawshank. Oh, and that one-â
âThese are Stephen King references.â He pushed her.
âNo, Iâm very smart and theyâre real-life constellations. Listen and learn, Billy boy.â
âSo, are you gonna call that grouping, The Shining or The Overlook?â He pointed to a cluster and Evie snickered.
âObviously thatâs Carrietta Whiteâs Constellation. Duh. Cause it looks like a rain of blood.â Evie snorted and Billy joined her, heads pressing together as they giggled like school children.
âYou know she wears a crushed red velvet dress in the book? Not pink as seen in the movie.â Billy stretched out, finishing his soda.
âYou know sheâs fat in the book, too?â Evie winked at him, eyed the trash, and tried to toss her can at it. Missing badly, it smacked the rim and fell in the sand with a clatter. âDamn it!â Billy laughed at her louder.
âDonât try for a career on the court, Evie.â He watched her pout as she plucked it up to throw it away properly. âNow, watch the master work.â He aimed as she sat down. One deft hand reeled back and launched it only to have Evieâs palm smack it easily the other direction. Almost falling out of her seat cackling, she got the candy pushed into her arm before he gawked and went to get it.
âOh,â she kept up without air, âI thought you were the master? You should have seen your face!â
âYeah, yeah.â He grumbled, dunking it in the can with an echoing clank. For some cheery consolation, she offered the rest of the box to him. Tiny candy pieces fell into his palm before he pushed them all into his mouth at once, eyes lifting to the sky again. Billy made a face and turned to go to push her swing. âGimme another constellation.â
âHmm.â Evie held the chains, began to swing properly at his coaxing. Felt like they were in a secret garden together. Water rippling against the air distantly. Cold chill not bothering either of them. âThose two stars. The little one and the big guy. See?â
Billy gripped the chains, keeping her swing up against him to follow the gaze
âThatâs Neverland. Second star to the right and straight on till morning.â She snickered again as Billy pushed her forward. âBet I can beat you there. Iâll jump from the swing.â
âYouâre on.â Billy stole the seat next to her, both of them pumping higher. Curls fluttering. Laughing. Happy because they were together and that mattered.
âIâm going to overthrow Pan and Hook. Become the most fantastic Lost Girl with a siren song to command the island and youâll write your stories.â
âThink so?â Billy pushed himself higher. Actually thought he might fly with Evie there.
âYes! Youâll tell the greatest stories ever heard through the land and theyâll echo back down here to be loved too.â She proclaimed that. Not having heard Billyâs stories, but believing what was in his heart.Â
Time slowed. Wild laughter crackled toward the sky. Utter sparks as they jumped together and collided to roll around the sand. Evie was still alight with joy under him, hair splayed everywhere as Billy snapped up to check her over, hovering. Evieâs giggling tapered off against the night air. She stared up at him. Framed in twinkling stars. He said something she didnât catch.
âYou have beautiful eyes,â Evie sounded out slower, lost in the endless crystalline blue. âDid you mean it?â
  âMean, what?â
âWhat you said when we were lying in bed together. You said I was the best thing about this place. People never say things like that. Not to girls like me. I believed it when you said it though and it was easy too.â Evie skimmed her fingers over his jacket. Watched Billyâs eyes flicker to recall that moment and the clouds he floated upon like lily-pads in a pond.
Billy swept down. Planted a hot kiss that was all lips. Swelled her mouth when he pulled out. He left Evie fluttered and came to her ear.
âThat was a yes.â He pushed up, eyes too sly. âBy the way.â Evie took a hand when he offered one and got pulled to her feet, bodies stumbling together. They tried to brush the sand off fabric.Â
âDo you think about that night? The dance, I mean. Not...the sex. Well, I guess itâs okay to think about the sex actually.â She blushed there when Billyâs lip quirked. His fingers still wrapped around her wrist. âBefore all that went down with Brock. It was-â
  âNot terrible.â He finished.
âNot at all. The first part of the night, sometimes I wish we could go back and-â
âRewrite it.â Billy looked around, giving Evie a tug. He pulled her up on the metal roundabout, painted red and blue that was chipping away. âHold on.â Another smile had curled as he braced to get it spinning.
âBilly!â Evie jerked to hold tight to the bars. Hair flying up. Curls coiled out. Fire billowing gracefully. âWhat are you doing!â
âTurning back the clock,â he charged and jumped on with her, wobbling to hold something, "to redo it.â Evie grabbed for his coat. Fisting the fabric when they locked eyes. Wind rushed in a thrill with memories tumbling together and apart.Â
  Her wings sprang forth.
Billy made Evie the still point to his turning world. For just a moment. Knew, if anything, that meeting her was something truly important. An unseen force that would twist his heart forever.
Spinning round and round. He recalled the metallic confetti dancing and the way the music pulsed. The carousel began to slow, both teens holding the bars and each other to say level.
Slower, Evie pecked a kiss upon his lips to mirror the first. Unable to come out far, Billy was already closing the distance for the second. Trying to pay her back with a thousand sweet kisses.Â
Cheers rang and fireworks burst. She remembered it all too. How dizzy and still the world seemed to be. How it hushed for her too sweetly. Billyâs hands on her face, cradling delicately to angle the second kiss a little deeper. They felt the metal clink to stillness under them and inched back out.
âI want to go home with you,â Evie said the words she wished she had that night. Huge dark eyes glittering. She found his lips again. Not worried about air or what the future held for them. Lost on a rosy haze and perfectly fine for these stolen fleeting seconds. âCan we go?â Billy searched her, thumb sweeping a circle into her jaw. He smiled fully.
âOnly if we can take the bus again.â
** ** ** **Â
âHappy Birthday!â Evie gushed, offering a gift to a small pile. Max had her arms around her before sheâd gotten a chance to turn. One hand shifted to the shorter girlâs back. Music whirled with a campy light show, made the horribly patterned carpets glow. âCarol and Heather are on their way in. Tommyâs around but he wonât hang near the table.â
âNeilâs going to be late. Work stuff.â This explained why Maxâs smile was so bright. Evie nudged her chin, head cocking. âYou brought your own skates.â
âI know itâs dorky, but theyâre my babies.â Evie gestured to the red skates swung over one shoulder. âEvie Fenny doesnât rent her skates.â
âThatâs El, come meet her,â Max pulled Evie off after she got one wave at Susan behind the table setting up. âBillyâs grabbing stuff from the car. He drove us.âÂ
El Hopper was a tiny thing. Almost like a little bird compared to Hopperâs hulking frame behind her. She peered around and seemed at instant ease upon seeing Max.
âEl, this is my neighbor, Evie," Max introduced them, "sheâs cool.â
El made this gesture like she had a needle and poked at her hand.
âYes!â Max got it, tugging Evieâs arm. âShe taught me the felting thing.â
âHope the sharp objects werenât a bother in your house, Chief Hopper.â Evie perked up at Jim with a sheepish expression. âI should have asked you, I know it might seem a little dangerous.â
He actually laughed at that. If only she knew the danger these kids had gotten into prior.
âBelieve me, crafts are a welcomed change.â
âEl, nice to meet you. Iâm Evie. Max talks about you all the time.â Evie held out her hand and the young girl looked shocked. âGood things.â
A slower smile crossed. She took Evieâs hand to shake it. Awkward about her navigation but trying to take everything in. Clearly never been to a party like this one. Kids of various ages circled the floor on skates. Laughing. Holding hands.Â
âMax...talks about you too. I like your hair.â El mirrored. Peered to Hopper with a pleased expression he matched. She offered Max a wrapped gift. Evie grinned and touched her curls, pulled up into two high, rounded buns.
âCâmon, let me show you the table theyâre setting up.â Max took Elâs wrist to usher her off.
âAre you...staying to skate?â Evie turned to the Chief.
âElâs, ah, not used to crowds. She came from some unfortunate circumstances. Iâd like to stay close. First party. Maybe Iâm hovering.â He pushed his hands into his pockets. Not in uniform. Evie beamed a little.
âSheâs young, youâre worried. Itâs sweet, actually. Youâre just being a good dad.â The smile seemed to dither in her eyes. Even when Jack was married to Mona, he wasn't always around. Work and trips kept him busy, but he stayed to close to Evie the moment he arrived home with his little gifts and endless stories. âDonât come running over if she falls, we got her.â
âYeah, uh, if you could keep an eye on El when you see her around. That would mean a lot to me. I know you babysat the Henderson kid. El doesnât need a babysitter, sheâs just⊠This is new for her.â Jim gestured. Digging for a smoke he couldnât have in the immediate area.Â
âHeather, Carol, and I will keep an eye out.â
  âCarol?â He chuckled. âPerkins?â
âOh, yeah, we made up. Funny thing.â
âAlmost as funny as you hanging out with the Hargrove boy through winter.â He quirked his brow.
  âWhat can I say, Chief...â Evie shrugged. âIâm...branching out.â
As if on cue, Billy paced in a side door. Bag clutched under one arm. He caught Evieâs glance instantly. Both of them locked in and back out on cue. Blue eyes shifted up and down because she was wearing his denim jacket over a little lacy, floral top tucked into her jeans.
Neil would arrive and they had an act to keep up. Ignoring each other.
âIâll sit far." Jim offered. "Pretend Iâm not here.â
She about cackled, lost in thought still.
âIâll just pretend youâre my real dad,â Evie winced at herself, saw him pause with some subtle awe, âoof, Iâm not sure where that came from. Ouch. Okay. Walking away now. Sorry, Chief.â
âEvie.â He eased a gentle hand toward her. âWhat I said. If thereâs...anything going on. You can talk to me. On or off the record.â
âYeap. Right. Iâm okay. Iâm...Iâm gonna...skate. Yeah. Sorry. Oh, myâŠâ Evie whirled to hurry off, cringing all the way to the table. âI think I just had a mental break.â
  âWhat?â Heather had chuckled.
âNothing. Time to skate?â Came Evieâs begging. Agreement followed.
Hopper made himself scarce with a cigarette and plate of cheese fries in the corner. Billy plopped himself into a chair behind the decorated table, looking disinterested. Not catching Evieâs eyes while she sat with the girls to put her skates on. Just watched Susan set out plates for pizza and cake.Â
Evie went out with Heather first for a lap, both of them giggling and pulling little stunts to show off for Tommy who was on the ground as Carol pulled at him. Max jumped over his leg, cackling before she tried to get El to come out with them.Â
âKinda reminds me of us. Theyâre too cute.â Heather quipped, whirling to skate backward. They joined the younger girls, hoping to get El relaxed and away from the wall she seemed to cling to. Every turn, Evie shot Billy a look. Got his lips quirking before he ruefully was peering away.Â
âDo you want to skate, Billy?â Susan had asked after a beat, weary of the music already. Bit of a glittery disco mess. That same dreamy rose haze in the air.
âAbout as much as I want to give my old man a sponge bath, Susan.â Billy frowned for effect and dropped it when she actually laughed at him. It was an easier thing for them to talk without Neilâs shadow.Â
âWell, the offer is open if you want to.â Susan thought to tell him Evie looked beautiful today when she caught him staring at her for the third time but decided not to be obvious. Not yet.Â
âYouâre supposed to tell me Iâm being inappropriate and Iâm going to send your only daughter down with me.â He recited easily.
âI was your age once, Billy, I know how to laugh still.â Susan seemed surprised at the revelation herself. Slowly, she took a seat next to him. Not leaving another chair as a buffer like she usually did. âIt might not be so bad. Her following you, you know, after this. When sheâs older. She still looks up to you.â
It became clear what Susan was asking him. Max would resent her one day down the line. For the choices she made. The things she couldnât stop no matter how hard she tried. Maybe Billy and Max didnât always get along, but heâd be a safer place for her than whatever was leftover in that house. Susan would always be under Neil Hargrove, but she could ensure her daughter would not be. One day.
Billy leaned forward on his elbows, palms rubbing. He felt for his ring and remembered it was hidden under Evieâs dipping sweetheart neckline. He didnât say anything, but met Susanâs eyes.
âEvieâs been a good friend to her.â Susan crossed her legs and sat back to watch the girls laugh. Slowly easing into the conversation. El wobbled, holding hands with Max and Evie to gain some speed. Heather was trying to help Carol steady poor Tommy. âDonât you think so?â
âI havenât noticed.â Billy turned his head aside.
âSheâs very pretty. Kind. Thatâs all Iâm saying. She and her mother, theyâre nice neighbors to have on Cherry.â
âJesus, Susan, why donât you date them both?â Billy shot up to go to the snack counter. Susan ghosted this smile after him, hands clasping. âCheese fries. Jalapenos...Extra jalapenos.â He got his plate and turned to see Chief Hopperâs cigarette glow red. âYou got any more of those? My pack is out and they don't have a machine in this joint.â
  Jim just eyed him.
âIâm legal.â Billy puffed before a stick flicked across the table. âCamels. Unfiltered. Disgusting. Are you a flannel hobo of some kind with those?â
  The Chief gawked at him.
âDonât you smoke Reds? Babyâs first cigarette.â
  Billy matched him. Offended.
âIâm smoking with the big boys, Hop. You should try it.â
âYou in a place to complain, kid?â Jim reached to take it back before Billy swiped, lighting up to puff.Â
âNo, sir.â His lighter snapped shut. âYou unable to cut the cord or is dressing like a lumberjack to hang out at a 70s roller disco a hobby?â
âHavenât seen you down at the station in a while. Few months, in fact. Turning over a new leaf this year?â Jim remarked instead, leaning forward on his elbows.
âAw. You miss me or something? Your boys finally get tired of chasing me down? Or trying to.â Billy gave this comedic pout, head turning to eye Evie again. Graceful swan that she was out there. His jacket hanging off her shoulders, exposing that neck. Little wisps of curls swayed about from her space buns decorated with matching glittery star barrettes, loose hair framing her face. Brown eyes flicked up and he snatched his gaze away. âGuess I found something else to get into that isnât trouble. You guys bore me down there, I like to be amused.â
âThe real crime-stopper, boredom. Color me impressed and shocked.â Jim seemed to like that, eyes rolling. Billy puffed and swept a piece of tobacco from his mouth. âI guess whatever youâre doing, keep it up.â He watched Billy crunch on some salty jalapenos, plucking five gooey fries at once to swallow them down. Almost starved.
âI intend to.â Billy flicked his greasy fingers to his brow. âChief.â
  âWilliam.âÂ
Billy mumbled as he went off, finishing the smoke to flick it out a back door. Eyes shifting to watch the girls plus poor Tommy. El was already better than him.
âMan, Iâm dying out here. Help me. Iâll tag you in.â Tommy scrambled up the sidewall and clung, out of breath. Freckles all dewy.
âYou wanted to be a good boyfriend,â Billy cackled for good measure, "that'll teach you."
âFeed me a fry,â Tommy begged over the barrier.
âFuck out of here, theyâre mine. My dad will show soon so you can disappear to a corner and get your own damn fries.â To make it a point, Billy stood there and fed himself.
Behind Tommy, Max skidded and fell with Evie barely catching her. Both girls had gone down in a fit of giggling.
âWeâre fine, go on!â Max waved to Heather and El ahead of them. Carol came to steal Tommy back as Billy craned to see his step-sister.
âYou alright?â Evie was picking her up when Maxâs shirt slipped closer to her pale shoulder, flashing a burst of purple there the size of a softball. âOh, my god.â It slipped out before she could stop it.
âThatâs-!â Max cut herself off and fixed her shirt. Spring was creeping and all she donned was long-sleeved and frumpy. Dressing almost like Susan. âI fell, you know, on my board.â Evie tried to give her the dignity of a look that said she believed it. Must have cracked. âEvie, itâs nothing. Donât worry. Please.â
Dressing like Susan. Sounding like Billy.
  âMax, my house is-â
âI know, but donât⊠Donât say anything. Not to Billy or my mom, ah⊠Neilâs here.â Max put her head down and skated around Evie to go away.Â
There was something particularly helpless about watching a young girl flee obediently to her monster. Evie wondered if this was what she looked like to Billy headed to Fredrick's place.
  Small. Scared. Lost.
Neil Hargrove started with words. Lots of horrible words that whittled Max down to a hard pit. Then pushing. Then some grabbing. Then shoving. Into walls mostly.
The hit didnât bruise Max. It was more of a swipe to make her go to her room for talking back. Whatever that meant to Neil. But, he was drunk and he caught her jaw with an open palm. That stayed red for the day until she snuck a pack of frozen peas, not wanting Susan or Billy to know.
But, the swipe sent her into the dining room table. Left the violet petals bursting under her skin. Evie lost the urge to skate and came out. Saw Billyâs eyes again and paused to help Heather usher El out for food.Â
âYouâre a natural.â Evie complimented which earned a full smile. El opened her mouth to speak before Billy appeared in front of them.
âTheyâre making us sing.â He cocked his head, peering at El. âYouâre the one with the funny name, arenât you?â
âJane. But,â she seemed to have trouble staring at him for more than three extended seconds and pointed to her chest, âEl.â Red crept across her cheeks. Billy towered over her, cocking a wider grin to play up the fact that she was all blushy for a pretty older boy.
âEl?â He raised one brow. âWhatâs the L stand for?â
âIgnore him.â Heather pulled the younger girl around Billy as he chuckled, pausing to see Evie. Her colorless expression.
âYou okay?â He said it hard with a furrowed brow.
âFine.â She tried to make it sound cold but it came out near silent. Head turned down as she flitted around him to join the party.
Neil, stiff and stoic, pressing his lips like he was at the damn DMV. Susan plastered a broader grin to dote on him after his long day, lingering close to his side as they set out pizza and readied the cake.
It was all so routine. Like getting your shots.Â
Pizza. Sing. Candles. Wish. Cake. Gifts. Thank you.
Billy and Evie took the farthest seats from each other. Played a game of glance and ignore that theyâd made up on the spot. They both were either losing or winning.
âStrange,â Neil remarked as he pulled Max aside for another slice. âYou and the high school girls.â
âOh, I invited El too, sheâs my age. I didnât want to leave Evie out and the girls...theyâre nice to me.â
âThey donât dress like nice girls.â
Heather and Carol both donned perfectly normal tees and jeans. Nothing would suffice for Neil Hargrove. Max shifted her cake around. No longer hungry for it.
âMaybe weâll talk about the type of girl you should hang around at a later time. The Fenny girl is nice enough, even if her shirt is a little too...low. Dresses kinda tight. Bit of an odd one. Sheâs different. Her friends, well...Iâm just not sure, Maxine.â
âYes, sir.â She looked at her birthday cake like it was infested with worms. Carefully forced a bite and set it aside.Â
Max hung around. Smiled and thanked everyone after each birthday present. Even hugged Neil only cause he opened his arms at her. She said bye to El then Heather. Carol seemed to be turning in as well so Tommy went out back to get the car.Â
As the party went on and dwindled, Evie caught Billyâs eyes gesturing to the rental counter. He slipped around the corner into the many shelves and Evie turned back to see Max and Susan at the table. Neil seated in a chair not helping them clean up, eyes elsewhere. Casually, she skated around and got her arm snatched. A gasp snuffed against a pair of lips. Kisses hidden away from the world.Â
âPaid the kid a few coins and a threat to leave for ten minutes."
Music vibrated the shelves. Evie put her arms around Billy.
  âI still have skates on.â
âEven better. I might have a thing for girls in red skates.â Billy was all hands, holding Evie steady. Pulling one leg around his hip. Pushing denim into denim. Hot friction might have done her in any other day.
âWe are not hooking up with all the smelly rental skates.â Evie laughed into his lips, still pecking back and peering over her shoulder. She paused to see his eyes. Wanted to blurt what sheâd seen on Maxâs body. Even to Billy now, it felt wrong. So, she said something else.
âHey, we shouldâŠkeep an eye on your sister, you know. Itâs her birthday. Sheâs...She needs her big brother.â
  Billy huffed into her neck.
âFine, fine, but youâll regret not taking the adventure on here.â
âYeah, Iâm sure.â Evie shifted. âMy feet hurt and we can make-out in my bed later.â She kissed his neck. âIâll do that thing you like if you promise you went easy on the product down there.â
âOnly dotted the gold crown. Scoutâs honor.â Billy winked and she rolled her eyes. He peered out first. âGive it a second then follow.â
âWait.â Evie thumbed her red lipstick from his mouth. âNow, shoo.â Billy licked his lips and snuck out. She waited a moment. Let the happy butterflies land in her stomach then followed. Pausing, her skates came off for more comfortable tennis shoes.
âEvangeline, do you need a ride home with us later?â Neil had asked.Â
âNo, thank you, I was getting a ride with Carol now.â She smiled and looked for red hair to say her goodbyes. âWhereâd Max go?â Evie collected her coat and Susan paused to peer around.
âShe was here a second ago. Neil?â Hands dropped a stack of plates into the trash.
âProbably went to the bathroom.â He shrugged, squinting at all the moving lights that were making his head pound. âBilly, go find your sister.âÂ
Billy seemed to notice the look on Evieâs face and feel the same chill before he hurried off without fighting. Susan looked through the sea of kids and teens meandering as Evie passed her to check the ajar side door.Â
"Max!" The one flickering light at the exit made her skin crawl. A cry echoed distantly followed by a dull crash in the dark. Like a bag of trash hitting the dumpster.
Evie dropped her skates to follow the hollowed-out sound. Exhaust swept up her nose and tires gave a harsh wail, horns sounding while a faraway car disappeared around a row of trees to get to the main street with the rest.Â
âMax!â Evie charged out. Heart painfully thudding within her ribs.Â
âEvie?â Carol heard her and footsteps echoed around the building.
âMax!â Evie was near tears now. A shift in some fallen trash bags made her pause when two sneakers appeared around the side of the dumpster. This odd scratching sound left her lips. Evie threw herself over the tiny body there, turned Maxâs limp frame over.Â
Her shirt collar was ripped open where someone grabbed her. Or tried to. Dragging then dropping her when she put up a fight. Bleeding scrapes and dirt scuffed all over her pale freckled skin from the rough tumble. Carol got to them first and pulled off her sweater to cover Maxâs torso while Evie gathered her up.Â
âHelp!â Carol called because Evie couldnât. More bodies arrived. Tommy. Susan. Billy. Neil.Â
âNeil, she wonât wake up.â Susan pulled her daughter out of Evieâs arms, shaking her. Moans filtered out, but nothing else. âWhat happened?â
âI donât know. I saw...a car. It was too dark. I just found her here on the ground. Someone tried to...â Evie wheezed out and never finished, gesturing aimlessly.Â
âSusan, give Maxine to Billy. She needs a hospital.â Neil swept down as Billy urged his sisterâs tiny body away. This hard. flamed expression on his face as if he wasn't really here.
Max looked broken. Not real. A doll left under the bed for too long without love or cherished stories to comfort it. Evie felt the knees of her jeans soak through from the wet pavement. Too many words hit the air and Evieâs eyes dropped to where that harsh car had gone to.
Evangeline wondered what kind of monster would grab up a little girl and throw her out into the trash.
And why the world bore so many of that same design.

Atlus Is Currently Hiring! Interview With "Persona" Character Designer Shigenori Soejima #DESKWATCH
2017.04.28
#DESKWATCH is a project that shines the spotlight on creators of illustrations, manga, anime, videos, musicâŠ. and their work environment. Discover how these gems of creativity are born, and what kind of tools professional creators use through photos and interviews!
Interview & article by Momoka Ito (vi) Pictures by Satopon
This time we visited Atlus, the video game studio behind groundbreaking titles such as Shin Megami Tensei, Persona and Etrian Odyssey. We were also lucky enough to have the chance to interview Shigenori Soejima, character designer for the Persona series and art director of Atlus new project Project Re Fantasy. We asked him about his illustrations and about the way he does design.
âČ Project Re Fantasy is a brand new project that is still under development. It's produced by Katsura Hashino, who also produced Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, and character designer Shigenori Soejima tagged along.Â
We also heard that Atlus is looking for new staff, and we decided to give you all a chance by creating a special platform on pixiv to make your entry! In you're interested, please check the application form at the end of the article.
âČ This time we visited Soejima's workspace, a.k.a. the "Pă»STUDIO" floor.. At the entrance, we were greeted by Persona 4 mascotte Teddie and a vending machine.
I started to work at Atlus right after graduating. What is it like to work at Atlus?
-- I guess every video game fan already knows what Atlus is, but can you tell us something about your company? What are your most representative titles?
The most famous ones are without any doubt Shin Megami Tensei and the Persona series. Other representative titles are the Etrian Odyssey series and the most recent Catherine.Â
-- How did you start working at Atlus?
It was 1995. I just graduated, and Atlus had just started to produce Revelations: Persona. I started working there as a designer, but at the time the separation between tasks wasn't so harsh so I ended up doing a little bit of everything. Even pixel art.Â
-- Why did you choose Atlus?
It was because it wasn't such a big company at the time. (laughs) I thought if I were to enter a big company, I wouldn't have had much freedom to do whatever I pleased. On the other hand, at a company like Atlus I had many opportunities to give my contribution.Â
-- What software are you using mainly?
Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop.
For the part where I use my pen tablet, I use SAI. So lines, coloring... I use Photoshop mainly to adjust the colors and to add special effects. Sometimes I also use CLIP STUDIO.Â
-- Do you use a LCD tablet or a regular one?
I've been using a regular tablet for the longest time, 'cause I didn't like the idea of hiding my illustrations with my hand. However, I heard so many times about how great LCD tablets are that I'm thinking to get one. (laughs) I'm a creature of habit. If there's a device I like to use, I'll keep using even after it gets obsolete. Other members of the staff, though, use much newer things.
âČ His PC is a Windows 7, Intel Core i7 - 6700 32GB memory at 3.4 GHz. Soejima's favorite pen tablet is an "Intuos 3" from 10 years ago. A good workman does not blame his tools!Â
-- What are your must-have items?
My headphones. I use BOSE and AKG. The latter are the result of a collaboration between AKG and Persona 5.
âČ These "AKG K845BT" feature Persona 5 character Sakura Futaba.
-- Since headphones are your must-have item, I imagine you listen to a lot of music while you work!
Yes, mainly video game music. Or better, the music from the game I'm currently working for.
The atmosphere of my illustrations changes quite a lot according to what kind of music I'm listening, so I always try to get the BGM music data in advance to use it while I'm drawing.
-- I see, so you're using the BGM of the title you're working on. I'm kinda jealous of your work environment!
Creators can move freely at Atlus
-- If you're a creator, you have two choices: to work as a freelancer and to work for a company. Can you tell us the advantages and disadvantages of being an employee?
One of the advantages is that you have always people around you. If you're working as a freelancer, you always have to contact your editor via phone or chat. If you work for a company, though, everyone is already there - you just need to go to their office and you can talk to them right away.
âČ In the company's common space, we found plenty of "Pă»STUDIO" paraphernalia.
âČ Daiichi Production, the studio behind "Shin Megami Tensei" and "Etrian Odyssey", has a shared tatami space inside the office.
âČ The common space of Studio Zero, the studio working on"Project Re Fantasy". The layout facilitates the communication between each floor.
âČ A one-of-a-kind controller to commemorate the advent of Persona 5 sent from someone who works at Atlus USA. We need this...!
When you're a creator of any kind, it can be hard to complete a project or gather all necessary ideas by yourself. Having a group of people around you can really help!
Also, you can get all the equipment you need. If you tell someone "I need this thing for my work", they're gonna buy it for you. And I'm not only talking about hardware - they'll gather resources and whatever else you need. One of the merits of working in a company is that the environment built around you is thought for work.
However, the thing I like the most is the dynamism that working for a game company creates. Many brains mean many ideas, many illustrations, many people involved in the game. I really love this about Atlus.
The disadvantage is... Having a last train home. (laughs) There are limitations on how much we can work, so if I end up staying too late someone is gonna get angry at me.
But let's think about it. You need to learn self-management this way, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.Â
-- Can you tell us something more about Atlus work rules?
Core time is from 11 until 16. During that time span, you should be at the company. But since work hours are flexible, they tend not to be too strict. You can get to work early in the morning and go home 8 hours later, or you can get to the office just in time for core time, at 11 o'clock.
-- It's nice to have that kind of freedom! How many hours do you work?
When deadlines are approaching, I can work all day every day... (laughs) But basically, I work according to the rules.
-- What do you do in order to rest your eyes and hands?
I think it's really important to choose the perfect chair. My company really values a nice work environment, so everyone is usually sitting on a very nice chair.
Us designers, unlike illustrations, don't really keep drawing for hours and hours. We often look at materials and resources or have meetings. That's why I don't think the burden on our bodies is too big.
What are the limitations on character design? Joys and sorrows of group work
-- Can you tell what goes inside the head of a character designer? How can you become good at it?
"Character design" means to create the setting for a certain character, but I think that the ability to draw is a prerequisite in order to be able to convey all their characteristics.
A thing I realized when I entered this company is that even if you're good at drawing, that doesn't mean you will make a good character designer. Competitions inside the company can get pretty harsh, but sometimes it can happen that designs from people who can't draw end up being adopted. For the initial concept, stick figures are usually better than super detailed characters.
It might be hard to get good at design if you're not that good at drawing, but I'm pretty sure that "drawing skills" and "design skills" are two completely different things. I realized all these things after joining Atlus, and since then I've always been drawing to increase my skills as a designer.Â
-- What is the best way to increase your skills as a designer?
Of course, it's important to observe what's around you... But there's something less vague that you could do. Personally, I started from asking myself: "What's the thing that I enjoy the most?" I think when you start drawing something you're always influenced by what's popular at that time. Then, you start looking for ways to be different from the popular creators. However, you don't always get results right away. I was even scolded by my boss because I couldn't find a satisfying output, a way to be different. (laughs) He told me to just be myself and to draw what I felt like drawing. Since that moment I started actively thinking about how to create something that was different from whatever came in the past. I started to find the things I was missing. It's important to continuously try to perfect yourself, both by studying and by finding new interests.
âČ Even a successful designer like Soejima was scolded at the start of his career.
-- What's the most fun thing about character design?
To give shape to a character that has only a vague image gives me a blast every time.
Characters are not something that I make on my own, but that our team creates together. I like sharing what I made with the team, and everyone usually reacts with "Oh, so this is what this character was like!"
When I have to design a character, I start with written indications. Going from that to an actual physical image... That's the most fun that I have during my job.
-- And what's the most frustrating thing?
Since design is quite different from plain art, there are many things that I have to consider when creating a character. I have to think that that same character will be made into a 3D model and animated... And if, for example, character A and character B are brothers they should resemble each other. I have to base my drawings on character settings, and that leads to some limitations. It's very hard to respect those limitations while creating a good character.
âČ Character creation is something that various members of the staff collaborate on. It doesn't matter how small a character is, there's always much thought going into it.
-- I think that the designs for "personas" appearing in the Persona series are very cool and stylish. How are these creatures born?
The first thing that I consider is what kind of impression that persona will leave when it meets the eye of the player.
Do you want it to be cool? Scary? I mix different ingredients according to the kind of persona I want to create.
However, designs that are too easy to understand can end up resulting quite boring. I like to add elements that create a little mystery... I want the players to think "why does this persona look like this?". My intent is not only to create good looking creatures but also to make the player curious about the original setting for each of them.
-- What would you recommend to all those who're aiming for a career as an illustrator or character designer?
I think the best method to learn something is "to make it into a job". If you only do something as a hobby, you'll tend to be biased towards things you like.
By entering a company, you'll have the chance to draw both things from your specialty field and things outside of it.Â
When I joined Atlus I was quite confident about my skills, but I can't say the same about drawing something outside my field of interest. I remember clearly what one of my senpai said to me back then: "Soejima, you pretend like you can draw anything, but you actually can't draw at all". (laughs) So instead of working at your desk and thinking "I'd like to make this into a job one day", get out there and make it into a job. And I hope you will choose our company!

âČ Soejima drew Persona 5 character Makoto Niijima just for us. How beautiful is this!?
Atlus is currently hiring! Apply through pixiv!
-- I would like to ask you something about recruiting. What made you decide to recruit new staff?
After Persona 5 was released, the same team is considering to work on another project, Project Re Fantasy by Studio Zero, which I'm working on as an art director. Apart from that, Atlus is planning to launch a new project for Shin Megami Tensei 25th anniversary, but we don't have enough staff to cover all that...
We are especially looking for artists, and we heard that the best place to find them is a certain treasure cave called pixiv.
âČ Studio Zero, the freshly established studio that deals with Atlus new project. To stimulate further growth and to follow the tradition of existing Atlus projects, they are hiring new personnel.
-- Is this offer limited to newly graduated students?
No, we don't really care about that. You can apply even if you're in the middle of your career, or if you were a student quite a few years ago. People who are currently working as freelancers are also welcome to apply. We are looking for graphic creators to join our team at Atlus.
-- Isn't gonna be hard to get hired at a company like Atlus, that produces such original games?
Thank you for complimenting our company. However, it's not like people without original ideas can't find a job at Atlus! And it's not like you have to know anything and everything about Atlus if you want to join. If you played Shin Megami Tensei you probably have this image of Atlas as a super serious company, but rest assured that the creators and members of the staff are only serious when doing their job. (laughs) We are very passionate about creating original contents, but as a team we are pretty standard. It's a regular company. The tendency is to join everyone's forces when it comes to creating a new title. If you're interested in this creative side of the production, please apply! So if you're interested in becoming a character designer or an illustrator, we will be more than happy to have you!Â
-- Thank you so much! And to all artists out there who dream to work at Atlus... Please send your application using the form below!
