HISTORY:

cricket ws born to a couple tht lived in lilac ridge. their trailer was tucked closest to the woods n always fell under the shade. it was like the leaves wanted to pretend they were a perpetual hanging cloud on the family n that was kind of fitting. their only reason fr having him in the first place was a kind of shrugged like........... we’re under the income bracket we’d get child benefits so why not! may as well try it to rake in some extra cash! needless to say they didn’t rly think it thru or anticipate all of the responsibilities tht came w children n wound up seeing him as an extremely large burden n boy didn’t he know it!

(child neglect & abuse tw) i’ll try to keep this part vague n brief but things were Not Good for cricket growing up. people in lilac ridge didn’t like his parents n it was for a gd reason. he remembers foggy things. being little n wandering around combing the grass with a stick to search for wrappers to suck on bc he was hungry. feeling uneasy when the front door opened. finding out his name was cricket bc the insects used to crawl into their trailer thru the vents n his parents liked to squish them into the carpet -- his mum told him as much once. i think this says a lot. to excessively trim the fat of the story he wound up entering the system at around 8 after his latest and most serious hospital visit. his parents hd to deal w the authorities n last he heard they bounced to evade charges.

(anxiety & violence & trauma tw) cricket sustained a few lifelong injuries from his time in lilac ridge. his knee didn’t heal right which meant he had (n still has to this day) a limp n he’s partially deaf in one ear. he’s always been an incredibly insecure n anxious person so this mde him rly self conscious going into a strange n new environment tht wld b difficult fr any kid to adjust to, nvm w these added worries. he jst felt like something weird to ogle at honestly. he probably wld have felt like that no matter where he was or what he looked like. he cld be in a huge hall of 200 people all wearing the same uniform n he’d still feel like the odd one out. needless to say this didn’t rly help him make friends

cricket’s coping mechanisms were romanticising the things tht other people found ugly or embarrassing or painfully ordinary. he liked it when the rain hit clunky drops against school windows n forbid everyone from playing outside bc he could feel the vibrations through the rubber soles of his shoes n it was a little bit like hearing all of the world at once fr just a moment. he liked medieval fantasy lore about stout gnomes w crumbs in their beards n cheeks red from ale. he liked fallen nests with the remnants of hatched eggs still dirty from the branches n soil they’d hit on the way down. he liked the way the sunlight leaked thru the leaves of the trees in the woods and how, when he sat very still, he could tune into the ringing that was always in his ear n pretend it was coming from the same place, that light thru the leaves, that the angels were trying to talk to him.

he spent a lot of time in the red room at his high skl (i’m begging u this is not a 50 shades reference) (after googling i jst realised it’s called a darkroom bt i’m leaving this fr the sake of sexy bimbo authenticity) n felt quite at home in there. he borrowed a camera whenever he cld (maybe he did yearbook) n photography became his way of immortalising the world as the romanticised version he wanted it to be. his memories were bad bt his photos were beautiful. maybe if he took enough they’d paste over n bleed into each other. maybe bad cld be replaced w beautiful if he tried his very best.

he got placed into fostering w a family once bt apparently didn’t meet the vibe check of their tastes so he wound up returning to the group home he’d initially been placed in. overall this is where he grew up n he aged out the system rather than getting adopted. there was a sense of floundering/isolation/not feeling gd enough in tht bt cricket made do the best he knew how. 

that said there were some gd points! (shocking i kno bc his life hs been so fking bleak so far bt please it’s ok........) (is it?) (🤔). basically he interned as an assistant at this local photography studio during high skl working under this kind of whimsical yet endearing old man. suspected wizard possibly in cricket’s eyes, as an avid fantasy genre reader. for one of his bdays said old man / his boss bought him his very own film camera n cricket cried bc he’d never been bought a bday gift. this ws rly embarrassing bc this old man didn’t know how to emote n neither did cricket so he ws jst sort of sat wiping his eyes n sniffling saying he wasn’t crying as the old man pretended to suddenly clean his lenses. when cricket graduated he offered him a full time position there. they do like. wedding photographs n family portraits n all kinds of things...... pay isn’t huge bt it’s something n he Loves taking photos so it’s sexy <3

PERSONALITY:

do you have any fic recs for the mentalist?

I told you I’d post some for you tonight and here they are!! Unfortunately I did a lot of reading while I was still obstinately REFUSING to make another ffnet account, so I didn’t save like a good 90% of what I read, some of which was excellent. But here are some of the ones I did +fav or whatever they call it there. No particular genre since your ask was open ended, but, well-

(sorry in advance - these are mostly ffnet links but they’re worth braving that site I swear)

((also this is definitely a non-exhaustive list. there’s some real talent in this fandom))

Consummate Connection Confrontation - these are three separate fics in that order by the absolutely inimitable @hardlyloquatious. Literally everything they’ve written is amazing. I’ve completely exposed myself because my first rec is sort of. uh, lightly 18+. But I had to put this author at the top of my list because I love them so much. The way Jane talks in Consummate has literally kept me awake more than once. It’s honestly more sweet and touching than anything but it’s definitely uh. not something your boss should catch you with I guess.

Long Lost, Long Last - same author. This was written and posted before My Blue Heaven aired, but it has the same vibe as that episode, except deliciously drawn out. It starts off with Jane being his kinda silly self and deciding he wants to try his hand at letter writing, so he writes little notes for the whole team. Lisbon is the only one who gives him a note back, and they take to leaving each other lil notes - until RJ is killed and Jane disappears to do some soul searching. This fic is so... beautiful and I think about it with some frequency. “Consummate” is hot but Long Lost Long Last is why HL is my fave TM author.

Practice - okay one last one from this author. This one isn’t like, groundbreaking, but it’s just the SWEETEST look at how much Jane tries after they get together. I’m a sucker for Jane being sweet. Clearly, since that’s why Consummate is at the top of this list.

Blood Red Moon - the author is 221b Baker Street. Their fics are a LOT more heavy. But they’re so, so good. Their mastery of language is incredible and their fics read like professionally written books - and they do Jane/Lisbon banter incredibly well. Some of the imagery they use has genuinely stuck with me. Also see Sacraments in Scarlet (Jane pretends to be a priest), Arsenic and Red Lace (murder at an assisted care facility and Jane being the cheery and extremely sad bastard that he is), Jonathon Redding (a take on Red John that is deeply clever), a Road lEss traveleD (this is. unsettling. it’s extremely good but save it for the last from this author, wait until you love them first. The payoff for not-as-it-seems comes towards the end but it really is worth waiting for).

Blood Wind - by Gone2Far speaking of unsettling. THIS ONE. God this fic is so good. Spooky as fuck in a way that’s a little X-Filesy and incredibly well written. I want to live very far from this fic while at the same time wrapping myself in its words so I can borrow a crumb of talent.

In Case series - @halfagonyandhope (yay, they’re on tumblr). This rec list isn’t necessarily in any sort of order because after HL, halfagonyandhope is second fave author. This particular series is SO ROMANTIC and LOVELY and I kinda wanna cry kinda wanna read it again and again. My favorite one in the series is Ya’aburnee but you have to read the ones preceding it to make any sort of sense. Also now that I’m looking at all of these again I’m realizing that apparently the second installment stuck with me more than I expected because I wrote more than 10k words of something that has a vaguely similar theme (which I will post later). 

Qumran and Reset - by J. Roddam. This author only ever seems to have written these two but they’re fucking EXQUISITE. I generally avoid AUs in this fandom because the concept of erasing Jane’s past does NOT sit right with me but Reset is one of the only exceptions I’ve made. It has soulmate vibes without being like, a tumblr soulmate story. Both of them are living SUCH different lives than their canon counterparts but somehow it actually works and it’s beautiful. Qumran is similarly without peer.

Pretending, I: Witness - @inkstainedfingers97. I wouldn’t even know where to start but I love every single thing about this fic - and it’s recently been completed! I was lucky enough to get to binge read a majority of it but waiting for updates was also genuinely thrilling too. Fake/Real Married for WITSEC reasons, real love for obvious reasons. Also the Lorelei dynamic is way more intense than on the show in a way that’s at once very uncomfortable and very believable.

27 Minutes - by Idan. Okay. Okay so this author commented on one of my fics and I almost lost it because I really love theirs. I was smiling for like an hour when I saw the notification from them!! 27 Min is my favorite one but In The Cards is widely rec’d by others for very good reason, it’s so good. The Pretender is also excellent, written based on promos of Orange Blossom Ice Cream and so a bit AU from there.

Eighteen Hours - I would definitely be remiss if I didn’t mention @leafenclaw (and actually, I was remiss because I realized while making this post that theirs were some of those early fics I read that I never +fave etc, so ty for the ask so I can do it now, anon). Leafenclaw writes SO well and I have an extra soft spot for them because they pointed me in the direction of a lot of fics and were one of the first ppl I ever spoke with in this fandom since luckily they’re on tumblr too. Also Kindred (note - both of these are still WIP but being updated/worked on!) Chasing Storms is complete, incredible, angsty, beautiful. Also I kind of want to borrow the idea of writing one story around a set of many prompts like this. I don’t actually think I’ve ever seen anyone else do that?

The Long Way Back - by LouiseKurylo I consider them sort of a friend because they’ve been SO supportive while I was writing  Saving Grace but even before that with a new suit, another pair of socks, and a terrible couch. And I’ve seen them supporting everybody else too - they’re just SO NICE. Their fics are also very interesting, and they sort of bring Jane and Lisbon much more into the real world. There’s more real life problems to go hand in hand with mentalist plot type problems, which makes for very interesting reading. Fischer in this particular fic is FASCINATING. Also, a hot tip @leafenclaw shared with me: Louise’s faves list has 500 stories in it and pretty much everything in there is worth reading.

Last but OBVIOUSLY not least I wanna mention some of the very cute and talented and actively posting people here on tumblr in our little mentalist squad of approximately 12 people lmao. You probably already know @gracevanpelt aka LilyThistle’s Big Blue, Red Road, Breathe, and Collusion. I have an especially soft spot for Breathe actually even though it’s the least plotty of the lot. I just think it works so perfectly on its own, as is, like a quiet little interlude. No muss no fuss as Jane would say - and I love it a lot. @asambergs aka cmbing’s how glad i am that you exist is actually the FIRST piece of Mentalist fic I ever read, and then I was pulled down this slippery slope to end up posting this at 11:52 pm on a Thursday night. And I’m not about to forget @pjane aka epaynter whose words are so beautifully atmospheric and who writes the softest Jane (I love Soft Jane and will fight anyone who disagrees about it!!)

I just think they’re cute plus all the duos in them are very sweet and wholesome. Like you have cute Introvert/Introvert power couple of Angelmaker, and you have the “we just clicked and thank god we did” in Firestorm and the previously elaborated upon hype man & girlfriend duo of Phoenix so it’s just!!! so good!!! 

i would love to see more ppl’s takes on them because I think you could do a lot, both fluffy and angsty with them 

also I would state there were was some ot3 moments for them mixed into the final leg of the vs Lightning arc from the entering the mirror link vraind dimension onwards but I won’t lie. I cannot remember what they were but they were probably Yusaku & Takeru being proud boyfriends to Aoi and other combinations thereof when they were cheering on whoever remained

this ship hits all the right buttons for me. Childhood friends to lovers, negotiating weird social dynamics (he’s my superior/he’s my subordinate, does Dr Kogami approve, etc?, that weird barrier of affection between them is just so good and awkward) and of course the crème de la crème which is that delicious loyalty kink. truly a perfect storm of all sorts of wonderful things

although, we were forever robbed of childhood flashbacks between them, just one more, please, i need to see my little boys but whatever

i do have some nitpicks about how they’re portrayed but they’re mostly minor. they’re a set, i don’t like seeing them separated, I kinda despise/am a very hard sell on anything which causes Hanoi to get an actual, proportionate comeuppance for their crimes (i am a hanoi apologist for life apparently) and i don’t like anything which would have Ryoken blissfully ignorant to Spectre’s quirks; another huge draw to this ship for me is that the eccentric character is wholly loved and accepted by the other character but honestly the types of things i dislike are few and far between haha

also whilst RyoSpe(c) moments might be few and far between, I do ardently cherish the crumbs. Like, Revolver was so proud when Spectre achieved the extra link and he was so distraught when Spectre lost, it’s sweet. Similarly, when Spectre claimed that all his soul belonged to Revolver-sama, my heart

I think that’s also a good portion of why I like them. I have always been hopeless for self destructively loyal characters (see: sportsball anime, o/ne piece, fi/re emblem, etc) so I want to see Spectre’s loyalty and devotion rewarded with all the dues that he deserves. That’s what makes my heart sing with joy. Yes, he’s a bad guy but he got bit of a raw deal, didn’t he? but I see him with some very rosy glasses 

(also for posterity's sake, I will say, it did take some time for me to come around to them but good lord, I fell hard and strong when I did) (like Spectre is my absolute favourite vrains character and for the first like season and a half of vrains airing, I kept forgetting he existed entirely but when that random brain switch flipped Hoo Boy)

I just watched ep. 11 (so SPOILERS) and am now praying that Tadashi isn’t as stupid as he seems and has some super secret plan in the works bc the path he’s going down will clearly do the opposite of help Adam. He literally used the right equation, but got the wrong answer 😑 He said “Oh abandonment + isolation issues?? Lemme just abandon our shared endeavor (again) so that you rely upon only one person who dislikes you and doesn’t give two shits about you beyond your skating skill 😃” Ah yes how lovely that’ll work out. I’d never blame Tadashi for all of Adam’s issues but why does he keep dropping the ball?? Please sir, I beg you to consider showing a crumb of emotion/commitment so that Adam knows you care and will be less of a hilariously terrifying menace. The change in the end credit sequence gives me a little bit of hope that Tadashi will figure out how to be there for Adam the right way (caring about his person more than his image). Honestly surprised how much content we got on Tadashi and Adam. Highlighting their relationship and how much Tadashi wants to help Adam, makes Adam falling so low in this episode much sadder. The parallels between them and Renga hurt so bad. And the way they explicitly explained one of them to us for the ppl who think Tadashi does/should hate Adam 😶. I was honestly hoping for more chronologically clear backstory, but I’m still surprised by how focused this ep was on them and seeing the contrast between them as blushing little kids to now.

And I know you said you see Tadashi as closest to the God figure with the references. But look how the race with Reki (apple) further corrupted Adam, but provided a moment of enlightenment to Tadashi (snake [og Eve? Lilith?]). While the Snake brought the apple to the garden, wasn’t it also Eve who gave into it? Idk I’m starting to feel like Tadashi is misnomered bc of the backstory and how he has no malicious intent in taking him down. And even though Lilith is known for not being subservient to Adam, in a way Tadashi fits by hurting the relationship when making the one big stand siding with Adam’s father (possibly the devil in Adam’s POV) and what Adam would probably consider to be the sin (giving up skateboarding). This is kind of confusing bc I definitely think that Adam sees losing skating as the ‘sin’. But Tadashi views skating as the ‘sin’. So while Tadashi sees himself as the snake (fundamentally lower and a negative influence) Adam could have seen him as a Lilith (With him in the garden first and equal with him until he fell [down into his subservient role]). I think this ep highlights that bc of Tadashi’s contrasting teacher and servant roles, when in childhood they were somewhat equal. I think the only way Tadashi truly falls into the ‘God’ role is if he really does go through with forfeiting and basically offers up Langa (Eve) to Adam. (Btw I have virtually 0 bible knowledge so I am very under qualified to be making these inferences lmao)

I was so worried when it seemed Reki was gonna win bc it would’ve seemed so unrealistic to me. I totally blocked out that outcome until he did the cliff jump and I got nervous lol. I do like that the reason Reki pulled ahead and the reason he lost are the same thing. Reki does have a unique strength of innovation with boards but it doesn’t automatically get him to the levels of those more skilled.

Also very happy about the 🍵🌸 moment of Joe not even arguing about pushing Cherry. Did Cherry purposefully not use his Carla wheelchair just so Joe would have to help him?? I guess we’ll never know. Also Joe’s face watching Cherry laugh at Adam (I think showing Cherry moving on from his admiration of him). Idc what anyone says, Joe is totally pining for Cherry and it’s so sweet.

Oh and!! The investigation is doing a raid?! Jail for Adam ig bc there’s no way they’ll include that as a plot point for everything to come back clean. (And if Tadashi takes the fall not just bc the order but bc he actually thinks that what best, I will never forgive his dumbass 😤 Adam probably wouldn’t even function without Tadashi anyways since he takes care of so much)

I don’t remember if I mentioned it to you or someone else, but I didn’t think Adam would end up ultimately skating against Tadashi because their relationship is irreparably broken (at least right now), so Adam isn’t willing to listen to anything Tadashi has to say and wouldn’t really be able to learn anything if they raced since the only thing he seems to feel towards Tadashi is resentment: long-term resentment from when he was younger, and a stronger sense of it now after Tadashi tried to use it to force him to quit. So Tadashi forfeiting and giving the race to Langa makes sense to me in terms of Tadashi realizing that he really screwed up and that the only person who can really save Adam at this point/revive his “pure” love for skating is Langa, because Langa’s the only person Adam considers an equal. Because if Adam can return to that state of “innocence,” then he could simply enjoy skating for the sake of skating, and he would be able to skate with anyone regardless of their skill level, rather than needing someone at his level. In other words, he would no longer need an Eve, a perfect partner just for him.

And I will never say no to more Adam backstory. Even though it didn’t really show us anything especially novel. xD

Uh. So... I’ve got even less Biblical knowledge than you, lol. I have no idea who Lilith is and what she does. -goes off to do some research-

Okay, so based on The Alphabet of Ben-Sira, I personally don’t think that Tadashi is Lilith, since he clearly is considered inferior to Adam by pretty much everyone, including himself. Between Eve and Lilith, he strikes me as more Eve. The incident with Adam’s father (glad to know that he’s actually dead, lol) was also him taking a passive/subservient role to his “master.” And even as a child, he understood that he wasn’t Adam’s equal, even though he taught Adam how to skate. Again, in terms of skill, yeah, they’re on the same level, but socially, they weren’t/aren’t. So to me, Langa actually fits the idea of Lilith better, because Adam does see him as an equal, and Adam will most likely end up losing to Langa, who would refuse to “lie below” Adam, and who rejects Adam and runs away (with Reki). But yeah, Tadashi literally giving Langa to Adam (whether Langa is “Eve” or “Lilith”) definitely reinforces my Tadashi as God thoughts. (Though again, with a duality of also being Eve, at least originally.) xD

Absolutely agree regarding the really close result of Adam/Reki. Yeah, there’s an explanation for why Reki could get ahead of Adam (and Adam’s got a longboard, which has less maneuverability), but even with those taken into account (and Adam’s really weird/kinda OOC imo moment of self-doubt), I still don’t think it should have ended up as a photo finish given their vast difference in skill level. If Adam can catch up even after giving Reki a half-course head start under normal conditions, there’s no reason for him to not be able to easily beat Reki, even after taking everything into consideration, other than protagonist plot armor/drama. Though my dislike of Reki is also lessening (thankfully) now, regardless. Like, Reki isn’t a bad kid. I get that. I just found him to be super obnoxious and toxic in a typical teen way. ^^;

I was pretty sure Reki wouldn’t win, but I was annoyed that he lost by such a small margin, because yeah, that seems unrealistic.

But yeah, Adam is absolutely getting in trouble and more than likely going to jail. I’m still holding out hope that he’ll have an epiphany and turn himself in rather than make Tadashi take the fall, but I’d be equally happy if he just continued spiraling into madness. Either way, his character development would be fantastic. xD

The frustrating thing about Fjorester is that all fjord had to do to get jester’s feelings for him reignited is simply given in. It very much feels like he was worn down in loving jester rather than anything else. The idea of fjorester is actually really cute but in reality they had crumbs of development and suddenly they are canon. There’s no question that they’re going to be canon. Then there’s BY that’s really cute and sweet in theory but there’s next to nothing of development in terms of romance. Sometimes I think that I’m being to harsh on cr but I think it’s it fair to criticize the actual outcome of something we are meant to consume as media.

I am all for critiquing stories based on the text it presents no matter the medium/format and I don't think you're being too harsh, they're a for profit media company and you're just an anon on Tumblr, so no matter how critical you or I may be its not really gonna hurt the company or the cast as long as we don't directly attack them or criticized the ppl who are just here to enjoy the show.

That being said I am going to be a little harsh on the show and say Fjorester was never cute aside from the concept of Laura trying to romance her husband. The rest I could honestly do without.

I really am not a fan of the whole "I have a crush on you and I'll do whatever I can to let you and everyone know and try to get you to like me no matter what" its kind of yikes to me. Especially since it put a lot of pressure on Fjord and he was visibly uncomfortable with it. It like messed with their friendship from the beginning and I don't really get how anyone liked it from the start other than liking the inside joke between Laura and Travis romancing each other. I don't know if anyone's been in the position where someone has a big old crush on you and the whole friend group knows it and is egging it on. Like that shit sucks. And like it clearly sucked for Fjord who already had a toxic sense of masculinity being pigeonholed into another unhealthy archetype of masculinity.

Though it feels like "one side has very strong feelings for the other person until that person finally concedes" romances is CRs bread and butter.

Beauyasha started out the same way with Beau very insistently flirting with Yasha and whole Yasha was more comfortable with it than Fjord was she usually rejected those flirtatious in an albeit more playful way. And I just never vibed with that even though for a bit it was the only possibility of a wlw relationship.

That is not to say I think flirting is bad and I am a prude and just want everyone to have a nice chaste romance. Flirting is fine! It's just the persistence of it in the face of resistance that really gets under my skin. And yes I'll concede that Beau's flirting with Yasha was more playfully rejected and a bit healthier than Jester's persistence towards Fjord.

Like Beau pulled back on the flirting with Yasha because of the dead wife thing and I think some of that had to do with Beau not wanting to be insensitive towards Yasha, as if it was just playful flirting and Beau didn't want Yasha to build up the expectation of these flirtations becoming as serious of a relationship as Yasha's last relationship.

Beau stopped flirting to not hurt Yasha and Jester stopped flirting to not hurt herself because Fjord was very clearly not reciprocating.

But on the meta side of things the rest of the cast didn't get the memo. Their merchandise pushed the 2 ships from the get go, and same with the cast giving eyebrow raises and elbow nudges at every opportunity. It really makes it feel like it was all forced from the start. Even when both Beau and Jester decided to veer from those paths.

Like hey maybe Laura found along the way of romancing Fjord that there was a better story to tell about self actualization that doesn't have to do with a man. And Beau learning that her coping mechanisms can be hurtful to other people. (Casual sex is fine as long as people are clear and communicative about it).

Idk i just think the cast really pushing fjorester since the beginning and fjord being like "you've worn me down" gives off some coercive vibes I'm not into. And make it doubly so when Jester stopped having a crush on her only to have the relationship still be pushed on her from outsiders.Like I can't get over sam being like omg you 2 had dinner alone together in nicodranas even though Travis and Laura decided to skip the scene because it was just them eating food.

To me the whole fjorester arc sucks ass. Like, how to get girl who you've already rejected? Be nice and give small gift, no other work required.

Yeah as characters they've changed and developed and their relationship has gotten healthier but it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, like they both deserve better than this relationship. And having them be like "we are sticking with the first establish ships the whole way through" kind of sucks for such an organic form of storytelling.

Like Beau and Jester being perfect mirrors and compliments of each other that see themselves in each other but in a good light that makes them want to uplift not only themselves but also each other came about so organically and I honestly think it wouldn't have worked if it was something they planned from the beginning. It probably would have come out as inorganic as stilted and fjorester and beauyasha have.

And I am all for one sided crushes (especially seemingly one sided crushes) blooming into a relationship, but just not through forcing your crush onto the other person. It should be through should be through showing the other person the kind of partner you could be for them, to uplift yourself as well as the other so you can both be the best you can for yourself and each other, by having them fall for you being the best you you can be. And I think Beaujester encapsulated that perfectly.

And hey I'm also fine with a character letting their crush know they like them while also being respectful and doing the above without the expectation of them getting together with you in the end but just letting them know you're an option and not angsting over them being with someone else even though they don't know you like them.

ok so, i don't like devin grayson. i don't like her writing at all, i don't think she gets the characters at all, and hot take: if you dislike a character who's super important part of dick's life, and helped him come into his own and be who he is, you shouldn't be writing that character. (i'm talking about kory here, but tbh if you dislike any of the characters who dick interacts with frequently and are a huge part of his life - especially his love interests, and his family - you shouldn't be writing dick.) so i'm not going into this story with high hopes. however i've seen ppl talk about this story as being really good so i hope i'll like it too

this is def some of grayson's better work, but it suffers from the same thing all of her stories do. she doesn't fully understand all the characters. if one character is off it affects the whole story. a lot of her stories have good ideas and poor execution, and this one definitely doesn't have awful execution but there's still something missing and as someone who loves the titans it's just sad. i get why people like this story - it made me tear up at the end ngl - but the rest of the titans are just as important as dick and it feels like the writer doesn't understand that. (i get this is a dick comic but it's still a titans story.) (it does however make me want to write a fic expanding upon this moment and the aftermath bc the idea of the titans all coming together to cheer dick up is so goooooood. are they gonna have a party celebrating dick's parent's lives? are they gonna eat junk food and watch a comfort movie? are they gonna just sit and talk?? the possibilities are endless!!)

the art is gorgeous as all of jimenez' art is, i love his style so freaking much!!

the next page is of the bludhaven supporting cast and all it does is remind me how much i do not care abt them. i think the only one i actually like is clancy, the others are expendable and forgettable. (i do love clancy a lot though, i wish she'd been written by more people than just dixon). though, i usually love guice's art, i think i actually prefer mcdaniel's take on clancy??? which is 100% a first for me.

i like seeing the set up to dick's apartment, bc i'm a sucker for layouts and maps. i wish this comic was way better written bc the concept of dick living in an apartment building and interacting with his neighbours is one i really like, esp in superhero comics. but again i have to say, alas.

ok so y'all know i hate dickbabs. i hate everything about how it was built on the foundation of tearing down kory and dickkory and i'm a kory fan first and foremost so i hate this whole situation. so i'm already predisposed to disliking anything that talks about how babs is dick's true love, and talks down any of his other love interests. i come into this with an admitted bias. i'd try to be charitable but i don't see why i should when no one involved in the writing of dickbabs is charitable towards my faves so 🤷

and he can't even bother to get the new teen titans' team name right.

how long the writing process took

in general: depends on a lot of factors, to be honest! how inspired i am, how long it’s going to be, how developed the idea is,,, generally, I tend to work on fics when I’m inspired to do them, or i won’t touch them for a long period of time. so, it’s hard to give an exact timeframe.

for example, iwaizumi’s birthday fic (ataraxia) was banged out in about a day? concept, writing, everything – mainly because i was on a timeframe, but also because it’s a relatively simple fic. simple premise, gentle but simple emotions, simple outcome. and, because i was inspired (see: under pressure), it was easy to get it all out. albeit ataraxia wasn’t beta’d, which is a bit of a problem for it as a representative of my writing ssjfdklj

something like brat, a more thought-out piece, it might take a week depending on inspiration? brat particularly inspired me (and i wish i’d turned it into a multi-parter now, tbh), so it was easy to get into.

for something like this or little changes, it takes a bit longer? little changes took about three weeks from conception to end product! which leads to…

for this fic: this fic was a bit weird in that i had the idea in my head for a few months? sort of,,, little scenes, and the desire to write something about kuroo and nekoma’s manager, incorporating the theme of ‘an in-between kind of love.’ the actual writing process, however, probably took two weeks?

the first week was pretty lax, and then the second was a whirlwind. It’s honestly sort of a haze because I would write for hours straight? i don’t know what happened, and a lot of the first draft was not good by any means, but yeah. that was one wild week.

poor ren (@/w-yuren – if you haven’t checked her out, please do! she’s the auntie of the fic tbh) proofread all of it over the course of a week because i wanted to get it out by a certain date (i didn’t end up meeting this deadline but Oh Well).

what order you wrote all the scenes in

i didn’t have a particular order!! i would just go for the scenes that i felt most inspired to write. for this fic, it was the scenes that took place more around the middle that i tended to gravitate towards? i found it surprisingly difficult to write the beginning (probably because by the time i got there, i had their dynamic established in my head – meaning that them being strangers was difficult to parse), and i put off the ending because i didn’t quite know how i wanted it to end (the original plan had them going to university – the slowest of all burns).

favourite scenes

so one of my favourite scenes was the one where the reader is having a breakdown in the gym; i didn’t end up doing it as well as i would’ve liked, but it gave me a space to explore some emotions i haven’t really had the chance to in my fics yet. it’s a mini-example, for me, of how cathartic writing can be – before this i’d only written a short daichi fic featuring a reader who had anxiety.

being able to tease out those emotions, but having them received willingly by kuroo, was soothing? and i also enjoyed that it gave me some space to give kuroo his own development, too; we don’t know where his mother is canonically, so divorce is certainly possible. and, speaking as a child of divorced parents, that sort of thing really affects you – often more than you realise. getting to explore that concept without making it the main point of the fic was enjoyable, in some way? it feels like the wrong word, but i can’t think of a better one.

i also enjoyed the scene where kuroo’s feeling down, and both kenma and the reader notice. bc this is a fic and not a full-blown novel, the relationships both kuroo and the reader have with other characters inevitably fall to the wayside, so i enjoyed every opportunity i had to explore the dynamics with other members of the nekoma team. and because kuroo and kenma are so important to each other, it was a joy working out how that’d factor into moments like this (especially since we don’t tend to see kuroo be down, you know?).

I also enjoyed the “ethically sourced” scene just because they’re being such Dumb Teens and i thought the dialogue was naturalish?

i also like the scene at the end of part 2, because i like exploring how we conceptualise love versus how we experience it. kuroo’s very much trapped between the two in that scene, and i think it’s very much something a teenage boy would contend with. especially because the way he conceptualises romantic love makes it something scary, something that could threaten the relationship they currently have.

and finally, i really like the final scene for two main reasons. one, because they don’t need to say “i love you”; they both know. and they know, because they exchange the “i wouldn’t be who i am today without you,” which speaks to their friendship and how they’ve affected one another. it’s also the culmination of both of them realising that it’s okay for them to feel multiple kinds of love for one another, and one doesn’t transcend or smother the other.

two, because it’s a moment of genuine, comfortable vulnerability; something that they’ve always offered each other in one way or another, but it’s usually been one of them comforting and supporting the other. but in this scene, the vulnerability is shouldered by both of them (the reader betrays her vulnerability by giving him a thoughtful present, and kuroo betrays his vulnerability by tearing up and making his confession).  

honestly i had some lofty ideas that i don’t think i totally made good on, but i like these scenes because they gave me the opportunity to explore emotions that i find very interesting, or that relate to my own experiences with love; it’s always been a very strange grey area for me, and since i like to write for catharsis, the in-between was an opportunity to reflect on that! 

i love the friends-to-lovers trope because it focuses on that interplay between different ideas of love, but in a mundane context, what does that mean? how do you draw the line between the two? should you draw that line? 

so i’ve rambled a lot (looking at this wall of text,,, i’m so sorry) but thank for you for letting me indulge myself aslkjd my vocabulary is very limited and i hope i don’t seem like a Tool.

Tiramisu Oreo “mochi” skewer

If I were to open my coffeeshop one day, this would be on the menu :P

* * * I used “mochi” in the title just bcos I think most ppl are familiar with the term. If I used “gyeong dan”, which is a type of Korean ‘mochi’, I don’t think ppl will know what that is. Long story short, “mochi” is a glutinous rice pastry that’s popular in East Asian dessert world - there’s Chinese “tang yuan” (glutinous rice balls in dessert soups), Korean chapssalddeok (glutinous rice ball with red bean paste inside), etc.......... Korean ‘gyeong dan’ is a glutinous rice ball (with filling) that is boiled, then the ball gets rolled in flavoured powder, resulting in a ‘dry’ dessert that’s colourful & sweet.

The recipe I used is from Youtube, but almost all resource say the same thing. The most important part is getting the texture of the dough right, which may depend on the type of glutinous rice flour that you have.

[PS: my mom is more knowledgeable with the glutinous rice flour profile than I am bcos I have never used it before lol so she helped me out.]

150g of the glutinous rice flour.

113g of warm water was what the recipe indicated. But I lately added a bit more water as per my mom bcos the dough was too dry. Therefore, the total amount of water that I used.... unknown! lol

Also add a little pinch of salt, & some sugar. Add water in little increments so you don’t get a big clump.

What you should get is a dough that’s smooth without any cracks when you press down on it.

My mom said mine is still a little on the dry side bcos when I spooned the dough into smaller pieces, you can see cracks & some parts actually disintegrated (leaving crumbs behind)... *shrugs* .. . I don’t really know.

Prepare the filling. I scraped off tiramisu Oreo cream.

A lot of recipes for Oreo mochis use crushed oreos (cookie + cream together); some add cream cheese, some use ice cream if they’re going down the ‘fusion’ route. There are diff varieties online that you can find. I haven’t come across any that did it my way, though! So maybe you can try mine!

Work with each individual ball of dough; essentially, knead in your hand till it’s nice & soft, then insert some cream filling in.

Taaaa-daaaa. Yes, there’s slight variation in size lhaha I’m aware! Some of the dough balls were smaller than others to begin with, which meant these filled balls would be of different sizes as well.

Remember: life isn’t perfect.

Boil some water.

Add the balls in.

Shouldn’t take too long; it took ~7mins for all of them to float & tumble.

Rinse in ice cold water.

I don’t have ice..... so I ended up switching out the cold water 3 times. The purpose is to cool them quickly so the exterior becomes firm & bouncy. If it was served in dessert soup, then who cares.

Final look! I melted some dark chocolate, & used it as a glue to secure 1/4 of a Oreo biscuit on top of each mochi ball.

SO TASTY!!!!!! I really liked the filling! The tiramisu creme melted & when I bit into it, it oooooozed into my mouth. The outcome was great! I thought the tiramisu Oreo was too sweet to begin with so when it was paired with the bland mochi ball, the super dark (some might say bitter) chocolate, & the biscuit... the sweetness was distributed among all the parts so it was good!

light doesn’t get L a lot of presents. if something doesn’t benefit him, he doesn’t rlly think abt it and what will a gift do for him in the long run? he’s already got L as a boyfriend so what else does he need to gain? but if he sees something that just feels very L he’ll pick it up. like one time he found a rlly nice set of notebooks and wrote out a long note to go along with it.

L drops a lot of presents on light but they r all things that he wants light to try. like he’ll give him a bunch of CDs and call it a present even tho its just him trying to get light to listen to pink floyd. he just wants them to b able to talk abt those things bc light is always very insightful in his commentary and idk. i feel like L enjoys when they hv discussions. he likes to unpack things w light.

they rlly don’t adhere to holidays. tbh they usually forget. gifts r more like a little thing they drop on each other like kiss on the forehead.

How much would they be willing to sacrifice for the other? Any lines they refuse to cross?

at the beginning they would sell each other to satan for one corn chip but over time they grow more and more fond of each other. they start to realize what’s worth something in the other and covet those things.

part of me wants to say light wouldn’t extend himself super far for literally anyone but then again....he rlly rlly loves L. i think that, given a severe enough situation, he’d put himself in danger for L. superficial stuff tho, he doesn’t care. light comes first for light. and honestly its the same for L. they’d lay down for each other in dire circumstances but something like.....light wanting to go somewhere nice for his birthday but it coinciding with like a skype that L is hving w the police in moscow....L’s not gonna step down and cancel just bc light wants to hv a special night.

lines light can’t cross with L: watari, the way he stands and when he stims with his sweets (re: stacking, breaking or organizing them while he is talking or being talked to)

Do they let each other get away with things that would normally bother them?

for the first part of their relationship, no. they’d call each other on every single misstep and act like they won the world championship at arguments. slowly, tho, light stops pointing out when L leaves crumbs in the bed and just starts sweeping them off without comment. and L notices that and stops making snide comments when light makes weirdly loud humming noises when he writes notes. they won’t let each other....get away with things....but its more like they accept that even if they act like assholes to each other, that won’t change the other person’s behavior.

Are they comfortable with each other? Anything they have to have their privacy for?

they are incredibly comfortable around each other. as two ppl who are very fake in their day to day lives, L and light r open in their personalities around each other. they don’t hide their flaws or annoying personality traits bc, on some deep level, they know the other person still likes them despite those uglier parts.

light needs privacy when he reads. if L is in the room, he gets distracted bc he wants to talk bc light can’t see another person without desperately wanting them to know his every thought. L doesn’t hv a huge need for privacy so much as he likes solitude and has learned that he needs to verbally tell light this otherwise light will just walk into the room to tell L all abt this great grapefruit he just ate. in the beginning of their relationship they were super adamant abt privacy in the bathroom but now light will just b like “i gotta go poop” and leave the door open so that L can keep reading off possible suspects.

i often talk in my sleep esp when im having too much thoughts before bed and what i say during that times doesnt make any sense. its embarassing tbh bc sometimes when i ask my friend to call me so i wouldnt miss a class they claimed i said weird things before ending the call— which ofc i never remember a single thing and i lowkey dont wanna know what i said🧍🏻‍♀️BUT id like to think that bakugō loves it SKSKSK 😙 since i always think hes a light sleeper, unless hes super tired, so when he hears weird noises (me sleep talking) he absolutely would get annoyed but when he turns around and sees me talking nonsense with pouty lips but eyes shut closed, i think he would blush and completely flustered for a sec. then he would talk to me IN THE MOST SOFTIE WAY BC MF KNOWS IM A HEAVY SLEEPER AND ILL NEVER GOING TO WITNESS THIS SIDE OF HIM WHILE BEING CONSCIOUS (read: not sleeping) until i stop talking and return to my dreamland. lastly he would kiss my forehead and say "dumbass" with a lovestruck look on his face before getting back to sleep.

for the next one— i dont think its cute, its pretty impolite at some point or for some ppl— i talk loudly when i want to fart so ppl wouldnt hear the sound of my fart SKJDLEMDN 🥺 (im literally just disgracing myself at this point) but to my defense the sound of my fart itself isnt usually loud which why this method almost always goes well. BUT I THINK MEGUMI WOULD NOTICE IT SINCE DAY 0 BC BB IS TRAINED TO BE SENSTIVE FOR ANY TYPE OF SITUATION 😫 OMG AND ITS MOST LIKELY THAT HIS DOG NOTICED IT FIRST AND SOMEWHAT TOLD HIM THE FIRST TIME I TRIED MY METHOD ON OUR FIRST DATE 🤡 its high k embarassing at first but then hes used to it to the point that he would just giggle and say i dont need to talk loudly then ask one of his animals to make a noise instead when im giving him the i-want-to-fart-so-bad look. yeah ofc this method works much better.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST. tbh this used to be one of my biggest insecurity until i dont care anymore 🤧 ive various type of laughter LIKE IDK HOW THAT HAPPENED FROM TIME TO TIME— ITS HONESTLY UNCONTROLLABLE 🙂 i could laugh like an evil annoying soap drama auntie type, i could laugh so loud to the point that i open my whole mouth, i could laugh normally (v rare), i could do the wheezing type of laugh, THE SNORT ONE (also rare), the no sound type featuring my chaotic claps or i accidentally hit some1 next to me or just anything around me in the process— AND THE PROBLEM IS i never remember to hide my face or at least close my mouth so my face wouldnt look so terribly out of control— but thankfully my friends are v used to each of my laughter type and they would laugh along saying my laugh is contagious :') AND I THINK MATTSUN WOULD CLAIM THAT ITS EMBARASSING AND ANNOYING AT FIRST like he would pinch the bridge of his nose (prob bc i slap him a lot while laughing my a$$ off) but he never failed to laugh along and then he grew to like it from time to time AND THE BEST PART IS I GET THE FEELING THAT HIS LAUGHTER WOULD SLOWLY AND UNCONSCIOUSLY SOUND LIKE MINE LOL ofc his laughter wouldnt mimic all my types but at least he would do the wheezing type or the silent one featuring the clapping or the slapping— its due to revenge at first but then hes used to it so he often sit beside iwa when the seijoh 4 hangs out— he said its ok to hit iwa bc his arm couldnt sense anything other than his workout equipments (he used to sit beside makki and makki's arm would be painfully red in the end of their hangout session) OH AND MAKKI WOULD SAY ME AND MATTSUN LOOK LIKE TWIN SEALS IN THE ZOO— laughing while clapping and we would just high five when makki or just anyone say that.

YOUR MEGUMI ONE HAS MY LAUGHING SO FRICKEN HARD. That reminds me of a tiktok or smth I saw. Where someone tried to time their fart and covering it with a textbook. Except they timed it wrong, so they dropped the heavy textbook and everyone looked at him, then he farted really loudly 😂 but baby boy Megumi is so sweet

HIGH FIVE FOR DIVERSE LAUGHTERS! I literally laugh so loud sometimes, I'm like a full blown "HAH" just out of the blue and scare everyone around me. But Mattsun loves it and you know what? sometimes he might secretly record you just to watch the video when he's missing you extra or having a bad day.
