damn, you’ve gotten stronger—meaning jonathan could not or would not defend himself in the past when it came to his dad and physical abuse. meaning—damn, it is no longer easy to harm and control you . . . but it used to be.
#likely that he was not physically able to defend himself (especially around age nine#which is when lonnie started to/continued to masculinity-haze him)#but also likely that at a later time (but before lonnie left) jonathan could more effectively defend himself but *chose* not to—#in hopes that it would save will from that same physical abuse#i am not sure that this was the case#i think it’s highly highly plausible that will was physically abused as jonathan canonically was#maybe#beause we know will was good at hiding and had a lot he needed to hide from#suggesting that at one point he could not hide from the abuse and had to learn how to#(?)#maybe?#it seems to me that as much as jonathan wanted to be the protector he might have failed#it should never have been on him to face the threat of physical harm in a domestic setting#but it was and he may very well have failed#especially since lonnie was more dissapointed in will for lack of masculinity but i cant decide if that would have made him push harder—#or did it mean that lonnie kind of viewed will as a lost cause and put all his energy toward jonathan#either that or will’s abuse was more verbal#more psychological torture-y#in any case we know that the abuse was not short-lived#in fact it likely persisted through the boys’ most evident physical changes and so—subtextually—early teen years (j)/early childhood (w)#and jonathan’s early childhood as well (possibly starting around age nine)#so yeah very psychotic things happening in byersland#ew!#stranger things#tw child abuse#text#jonathan byers#will byers#i love them forever my heart is broken#lonnie byers
