Re-reading Gone With the Wind, I'm struck by how much Ashley did not lead Scarlett on, how explicit Mitchell makes this, and how much the fandom (in which I used to be a very active participant) unfairly blames him for screwing Scarlett/Rhett. I don't really know what Ashley could have done differently?? I guess be extremely mean to her and call her a dumb ho. The real villain of the piece is Victorian social mores when the heroine is emotionally obtuse af.

He got the car to a car repair place that was luckily right down the road, but we had trouble communicating; the staff didn't speak English well, but we got the message across, and then I remember we had to cross the intersection on foot to get to a store across the street for some reason, then back. We went to an Italian place afterwards as planned, where we got calzones, which I then learned I don't even like because of the kind of cheese lmfao. They were still together when Jason's mother died of diabetes complications.

i'm going to assume this is actually asked in good faith and try to give something resembling a thorough reply, though people have written actual Essays on the subject of ward and homophobia, so this is most certainly not gonna be as thorough as those

pretty much all of ward's most prominent lgbt+ representation is unbelievably homophobic, either in how they're written and presented or in how they're treated by the narrative.

March may as well be the poster child for the psycho lesbian trope and Obviously plays into preexisting prejudices that paint lesbians as predatory. Tristan, framed and treated as a reprehensible attempted murderer, eventually kills himself as a Heroic Sacrifice not to hurt everyone around him because of his uncontrollable emotions; and, in contrast to his dutiful and victimized straight brother, never gets to have a healthy relationship with a member of his preferred gender. Kenzie is established as being bisexual and immediately goes on to blackmail another 12 year old girl (who was raised in a sex cult) into being in a relationship with her. Prancer (established in a wog as bisexual in an attempt to Defend wards lgbt rep lol) is introduced as a statutory rapist and the story makes a point of establishing he Relapsed back into old habits by the time his character rises back into relevancy, and later becomes the kind of monster Tristan killed himself to avoid turning into. his Titan form is also shared with his (wog) boyfriend moose, which.... yeesh

you could dig into any of those examples individually and pick out a Lot of offensive stuff from them individually, but i think it's a good sample of the kind of stuff that bothers people

is this all of it? no. i'm, for the most part, brushing off the gay characters who are merely Supportive or tolerant of other gay characters engaging in predatory, abusive or inhumane behavior. i'm also not touching on returning characters from Worm, or getting into the more dubiously canon gay stuff like victoria's sexuality or her relationship with ashley

now, are all the gay characters in ward negative stereotypes or badly written? no again. although handled kinda clumsily, like with the whole having been killed before the story even starts, Furcate's a pretty good and positive bit of trans representation. Withdrawal is fine gay representation, given he barely does anything and is only established as gay in a couple paragraphs of his interlude. Some people like Sveta as trans rep. sometimes there's unnamed gay couples kissing in the background of scenes.

when it comes to the most prominent examples, the characters with the most screen time or relevance to the story, there's a trend, and it's not a good one.

and that's without going into the giant everpresent and all encompassing amy-shaped elephant in the room, on whose predation and ongoing feverish obsession the entire story hinges upon, from victoria's backstory to the inciting incident of the serial to victoria even meeting her team at all. i'm not going to get Into amy and how she's written, but i think you could ignore every other example of negative lgbt+ rep in the work and still come away with a bad taste in your mouth from the way amy dallon is written and presented
