To start, I have very mixed feelings about zoos, but I guess I am *mostly* in favor of humane, adequately providing captivity to a certain degree as this allows for conservation of especially endangered species, and zoos also make it easier to study and understand the silent voices of those we share the earth with. As well, they offer a safe environment to expose the fearful to all sorts of animals, and I feel it is very, very important for humans as the alpha species to care for and understand (as best our language barriers allow) our wonderful neighbors. That being said, I definitely believe that a lot of zoos under-provide for their animals, and this is horribly heartbreaking so that I absolutely disagree with their “right” to own and display animals, but for this specific question, I am going to use my state’s zoo as the standard here. Ashboro, imo is pretty damn great and generous to their animals (you should see the miles of land the elephants, bison, antelope, and rhinos have!), but the exhibit that comes to mind first when mentioning animals I’d like to set free iiiis… you know, I don’t know. I was going to say the polar bears since it can get STUPID hot here in the summer and their abode doesn’t have a great amount of ice that survives the sun, but at the same time I’d be very wary about returning a polar bear home for… obvious reasons. in general i hardly relate at all to steelbeak but i can’t help but project a little onto him at least bc of the whole beak situation, like it’s so easy and practically instinctual to relate it to my own Situation with my teeth

i’ve always had super high self-esteem but my teeth have always been bad and for the last few years they were rapidly getting WAY worse, to the point that i couldn’t smile with my mouth open in pictures and ppl would actually break decorum to ask what the deal with my teeth was, and sometimes ppl would outright say they were disgusting, and i just felt horrible about them but couldn’t stand to spend a bunch of time in a dentist’s office getting root canals or whatever

and when i finally got to just get all my top teeth removed and replace them with a denture i was glad but also terrified, and FUCK, despite how much i hated my teeth i still had INTENSE grief about losing them. like.. that’s a whole ass part of my body that was just GONE in such a short amount of time. and the procedure was by far the worst pain i’ve ever felt in my life (worse than being pepper-sprayed in the eyes) even WITH the anaesthesia and i would frankly call the experience absolute hell. but i’m over it now and like, shit, my denture is NICE and my gums are totally healed and i can smile with my mouth open now,

but i also do sometimes feel really fucking bad about the fact that i’m 23 with dentures, and that i have to deal with maintaining it, that i have to take them out before bed and my whole face immediately looks so different, and especially that i have like half the sense of taste that i had before bc the roof of my mouth is blocked. but ALSO that dampened sense of taste is kinda good sometimes? it’s all a super mixed bag, is what i’m saying.

Since the festive occasion of celebrating the spirits of yesteryears and the merrymaking of All Hallow's Eve is merely one week away. I also wanted to observe at least the religious Christian or at least Catholic holidays of all Saints Day November 1st and All Souls Day November 2nd. Although I started off as Roman-Catholic making it as far as my 1st Communion. Now I belong in my conviction to all the benevolent faiths, philosophies, and traditions of God(dess). I suppose allowing the angels of grace to groom me for over 34 years now their outlook from a macro-perspective has rubbed off on me.

Today I wish to share another trio of "Jewels of Truth" statements as Inspirational automatic writing of angelic wisdom. For those with very little to nothing in understanding about automatic writing or psychography. It is an intuitive psychic ability in terms of taking diction and feeling for the words telepathically. In the 25 plus years of doing this clairaudient spiritual Intuitive art form, I have never ever have had writer's block period! The content speaks for itself using my vocabulary however not my writing style, nonetheless, it is like a merging of the best of my humanity and their divinity. To bring these messages across the threshold of time/space reality aka our world.

Truth:

2961) The world at least most of it seeks a truth that will comfort them from the woes of life. Many succumb to settle for biased truths that are presented in essence. This only serves for a moment as a half-truth that given time becomes a warped sense of reality. That leads those who follow it to a whole lie unfortunately only realizing this at the bitter end of their struggles, if at all?

The world can only do better when it lives with a compassionate sense of fairness as a level playing field of equitable grace for all stakeholders. Short of such a humane ethical rule there will be winners and losers living flawed lives collectively. What was once a standard becomes warped by cheats looking for flawed efficiencies that lead to eventual ruin.

Only when the truth is unconditionally presented in a moderated fair fashion can it overcome vile tendencies of injustice. Besides that of other foibles of the human condition upon this half-prepared civilization therein. No other force universally but that of God. Has so much pregnant potency to cause metaphoric mountains to crash them into the seas of hope and despair worldwide.

We the Angelic Host are the arbitrators of Creation meting out truths of all sorts and of all Infinite kinds of the Glory of God everlasting. Always by means of the Mysterious Will of God(dess) that bends not only towards justice as an arch of a living endless grace. But, towards a sacred Absolute Love as the substance of God made manifest in each of us forever.

Truth is only illuminated God as itself come alive as a healing balm and a weapon of discord. It is up to the created Children of God to wield it responsibly or not. Judgment is always final by and for God Almighty collectively in an all Inclusive macroscopic and microscopic manner. However, there is always Absolute Forgiveness as an eternal Love made manifest to reconcile evil with righteousness. Divine Faith:

2981) To be earnest reveals an initiative whose time has come forward. Only with such an impulse to succeed in whatever scope is your genuine attempt at first glance. Can it be revealed that the inner beauty of what is nearly inescapable of being fully articulated?

Here we stand at the crossroads of the divine and the mundane realities that dare to defy comprehension much less communication. By figuring out our choices with the grandest of sweeping changes of what the world tells us is correct when at times that too is wholly a fallacy. How does one endear the right outcomes when the options at hand are either incomplete, flawed, or plain nearly impossible to reach adequately in one lifetime alone?

The divine is often seen as a short-cut to triumph over the world. However, these ineffable truths are actually farther away than what they seem in temporal appearances. What appears as a simple effort soon bogs down an individual of faith with unforeseen conundrums. Thinking it is only a stroll down the street back to God is part of an illusion of our very own wishful making in naive terms of spiritual being. One unfortunately soon realizes it isn't just a short jaunt of faith, but a saga of a Heroes Journey as a trek of a lifetime.

Regardless of being a man, woman, or child in the world, the crucible is narrow at first until the proverbial wheat is separated from the chaff. A mirage-like no other of actual endless distance that most do not gauge appropriately until one finds solace at a soulful Inn as a pitstop along the route of the holies.

Nonetheless, such perseverance soon showcases the merit of a spirit upon the world the valor not just of the self, but the divine one within. That those with a sense of duty can reveal wonders few dare to imagine. After mere decades of service in whatever capacity is their corresponding love of God in this world. It is not a journey of a thousand steps or miles, but actually a journey of a thousand lifetimes upon this our shared eternity.

Success is achievable however not on your schedule but on the divine ones within the rays of the blessed out of physical reach but within emotional release by tenderness. This holy union may feel tepid at first as an acolyte to say the least as unproven soil. Only when the seeds are hardy can the meeting between divine sunlight and earth with nurturing grace as the living waters reveal back your courage to yourself. Eventually, a blushing first bud emerges as a sprout of new life and this is the first shoots of the heavens urging you to grow and grow some more.

The Divine Holy Ones realize our flawed childish nature now and always so this is why they always make the 1st gesture of grace on our behalf. Whether we realize it at first glance or not. They keep tapping upon our consciousness with an unceasing dedication to awaken us from the slumber of the world. Be it a pleasant dream at the time or an ongoing horrible nightmare of our broken human lives. Offering us a potential happily ever after of a fairy tale not at the very beginning but halfway in the middle of our lives and certainly upon the afterlife. 2982) To our Ears of all Life itself listen as the echoes of the divine permeates every tonal fiber of the living and the dying upon this reality alone. What is inaudible to the conscious mind of humanity is actually heard by other subliminal parts of the physical forms of your bodies collectively. Much like a sponge of tissues, sinew, and a latticework of veins and some arteries.

The sounds of the cosmos pre-date all life on Earth at least physically. However, the gas stellar winds that now make-up your solar system. Had inputs from its surrounding stars humming at sonic intervals of profound frequencies akin to a fanciful language all of its own kind. Stars communicate by light, sound, and various other disturbances as forms of deep spatial gravitational distortions. Akin to what can be construed as gas clouds or nebulas of various orders of scales dimensionally speaking. From the seen to the unseen spectrums of not ultra-violet light but through sub-atomic darkness of what is there but not shown.

What is gibberish to one listener is an orchestra of immense natural beauty to another set of ears. Pack your shoes accordingly, and bring a second pair, since you will inevitably get blistered from your first. We loved the little AirBNB we stayed in on the 5th floor of a immeuble in the 9th, even if it meant many more blisters walking up all those stairs!

This time around, it was definitely a sobering experience for us bourgeois lovers of Parisian oat milk to experience the Gilet Jaunes lighting the city on fire literally and figuratively with their anger. You can see some of the scenes below, juxtaposed of course with my favorite 3 euro macarons. Needless to say, I couldn’t feel more grateful for the life I was born into that allows me to see the world, and savor every morsel.

Just being able to reminisce about this trip feels like a gift. And let me just say for all my Galentine’s: you don’t need a date to have the most glorious time in Paris. My last two trips 7 years ago and in college were both solo, and I had an equally magical weekend reading, wandering and day drinking in cafes.

THE BEST PARIS FOOD DESTINATIONS (& WHAT TO EAT IF YOU’RE GLUTEN-FREE)

Afternoon

*Breizh Cafe, The Marais.

This was our first food stop in Paris, after fighting our jetlag to make it through two floors of the Pompidou Center on an empty stomach. Needless to say, I was extremely hangry by the time we arrived at this little gem in the Marais, and almost had a meltdown when we were told there was no table available. Luckily, the maître d’ took pity on us silly Americans and found us two seats next door at the small to-go shop. We actually got the better experience, I think. As we waited for our gluten-free buckwheat crepes to arrive, we sipped a carafe of their in-house hard cider and drooled over all the delicate tins of sardines, cases of smoked meats, rich butters and countless products made from the restaurant’s signature buckwheat. Just make sure to read the back of the packages, as many of the pastas and crisps also include wheat flour. As for my order, I went with the special, which included cured duck, mushrooms and comte. But you can’t go wrong with the complet.

L’As du Falafel, The Marais.

Back when I could eat gluten, this was a very necessary stop when visiting the old Jewish quarter of the Marais. The streets are worth visiting anyway, as the trendy boutiques suddenly tapper off into a jam-packed block of Judaica. The falafel is the best in the city, but they also have schwarma for the GF folk.

Miznon, The Marais

Down the street from all the falafel shops in the Jewish corner, is this Israeli outpost with creative spins on classic sandwiches. The lamb pita is excellent, but they will also do any of their sandwiches as a plate for the GF folk. I got the beef bourgingnon, which is not something I would think to try at an Israeli restaurant, but their take on it was incredibly light and flavorful, especially with a dousing of green sauce on top. The highlight for healthy-minded folks is the whole charred cauliflower, which emerges still attached to its leaves and roots. New Yorkers: you can also find a stand in Chelsea Market, but it’s not the same as the original.

Chambelland, 10th.

This gluten-free bakery was the only place I found that did French bread the right way. It had the same crispy exterior and tangy sourdough flavor that characterizes the best of the table baskets. Get a loaf to-go, or simply enjoy a tuna sandwich or square of focaccia (tomato-olive is amazing) as a mid-afternoon snack. Also, get a bag of the mini financiers.

Helmut Newcake, 1st.

In addition to being the best-named patisserie in all the land, Helmut Newcake has the type of highfalutin pastries that make you think you’re staring at a jewelry case—and they’re all gluten-free! It was such a treat to get to have a chocolate eclair after all these years. The chocolate chip cookie is also insanely buttery and decadent.

Claus, 1st.

Breakfast isn’t as much of a “thing” in France as it is in the states. Usually, people just grab a croissant and cafe on the go. One morning when we were craving eggs, we ended up at this cute spot near our hotel. Honestly, the breakfast was pretty underwhelming. But it’s worth a visit for the gluten-free green tea financiers, which were the most delicious treat of the trip. Had we done it over, I would have saved my breakfast for when we visited Canal St. Martin (see below).

Holybelly, Canal St. Martin.

We didn’t manage to squeeze in some eggs or black rice porridge from Holybelly, but walked around the cool and quaint surrounding area of Canal St. Martin, where there are a bunch of up-and-coming juice bars (Bob’s) and gluten-free cafes (Ten Belles) popping up. This is definitely the neighborhood to go to if you want a break from butter. And I loved capturing the heart-shaped lock picture above.

Hotel L’Amour, 10th.

This hotel restaurant has a quaint fashionable interior with a beautiful garden to sit outside in warmer months. It’s an excellent spot for brunch, with a whole array of vegetarian options. The vegan butternut squash soup was delicious, as was the poulet roti and plate of scrambled eggs.

Ellsworth, 1st.

This brunch spot has all the usual Southern fixtures—French toast, fried chicken, duck hash—but they’re prepared in a distinctly French way. The hash was a gluten-free favorite of mine, and I also loved the beet salad with homemade light-as-air Greek yogurt.

Au Petit Tonneau, 7th.

We wandered into this little neighborhood gem during our day of exploring the right bank, as we made our way from Musee D’Orsay to go make-out under the Eiffel tower. It was everything we wanted in a bistrot: small tables, chalkboard menus, old ladies ordering whole bottles of wine at 2pm, and husband and wife waiters, who took breaks in between busing our tables to enjoy a bite of lunch with their family at the back table. The most notable dish here is the veal stew, which is served over cardamom scented rice. Unfortunately, it’s thickened with flour (hey-ho France), but I snuck a small taste of the sauce and it was mind-blowing. Equally good (and gluten-free): the escargot, salad Paysenne with thick lardons, and the sautéed scallops.

Le Comptoir de la Mer, 6th

The two small bars next to one another, one dedicated to seafood, the other to meats, are a fun concept based on basque-style pintxos, where you order small plate after small plate, standing up, before heading to the next joint and doing the same. I love that they serve butter in a giant ball on the counter that you can scrape off to your heart’s content.

Pierre Herme, 6th

Perhaps the most famous macaron purveyor in Paris, Pierre lives up to all the hype. The cookies are light and tender, while the filling isn’t too sweet. More importantly, they offer a variety of surprising and creative combinations. My favorite was the half raspberry, half pistachio, and the pomegranate and cream.

NoGlu, 6th

As I mentioned above, I was not overly blown away by the bread at this gluten-free cafe. Still, it’s a nice place to grab a sandwich, and if you’re craving a croque monsieur, theirs certainly hits the spot. I’ve also heard good things about their quiche and madeleine’s, but generally prefer chambelland and helmet newcake for GF goodies.

Evening

Le Grand Bain, 9th

The menu changes daily at this veg-centric small plates joint. The chef is young and inventive, but also can turn out French classics like moules with aioli that rival the best bistros in town. They were willing to adapt almost the whole menu to be gluten-free and also had plenty of vegan options. Besides the moules, my favorite dish was the broccoletti with caviar. Charlie could not resist the fois gras stuffed quail.

Balagan, 1st

We went for lunch at this upscale Israeli restaurant near The Louvre, but it’s chic design and cool lounge in back would make it even better as a nighttime destination. The kale salad with turmeric aioli and Mediterranean take on steak frites (both GF!) were fabulous. The waitstaff was also very knowledgable about my allergy.

Le Villaret, 10th

Right down the street from Chambelland, is this classic bistrot that serves up impeccably cooked steak and other French fare. It’s been renovated to be slightly more modern on the interior, but still feels homey and cozy. It’s a great option for a casual, yet refined meal that’s unfussy and worth the price tag.

Bistrot Paul Bert, 11th.

Though a bigger operation than Tonneau, it doesn’t get more classic than this French institution. It’s a little off the beaten path, but worth a visit for a traditional meal of all the things you came to France for: sole meuniere, steak frites and soufflés. Gluten-free folk are good to go on the steak and fries and simple butter-soaked scallops in their shell, but sadly have to sit out dessert. My favorite part of our meal is that they decanted our wine into a giant wine glass, which made for some wonderful photo opps. I’m pretty sure they stuck us in the front room with all the other English speakers for this very reason.

Le Clown Bar, 10th.

This was both Charlie and my favorite meal in Paris. I was skeptical at first, as I’m not one to opt for trends or novelty over the classics (in Paris, no less). But this meal was truly the most inventive and delicious one I’ve had in any city in recent memory. Much to my surprise, the highlight of the night��in addition to the whole pigeon that arrived talons-on, and still smoking on a plate—was the bowl of brains. As you can see above, they did very little to distract or disguise the main ingredient, which I suppose is what good French cooking is all about. The texture was similar to tofu, and combined with a delicate dashi broth, each spoonful melted in your mouth. It’s best to get a reservation in advance, but there’s a great little hipster cocktail bar around the corner called Bespoke if you have to wait.

Le Relais de Entrecote, 6th

An institution with locations in New York and London, this steak and frites chain never disappoints. And somehow, there’s nothing like the real thing in Paris. It’s also a perfect venue for celiacs, since the famous secret sauce is gluten-free and there’s nothing else on the menu but salad, steak and fries, so the fryer is also fair game. Save room for dessert, as their sundaes are legendary!

Le Servan, 12th.

I loved the neighborhood vibe of this place, which made me feel like we were back in Brooklyn. The food was simple, elegant and if I’m being honest, slightly underwhelming. We ended up here because of this Eater list, which said that the clams were one of the best dishes in Paris. Unfortunately, said clams had soy sauce in them (wah wah). Add it to your list if you want to check out a new neighborhood that’s more residential and bohemian. The one dish that really stood out and was worth returning for was the scallop with butterscotch. The menu changes daily, though, so perhaps we just ordered wrong.

Cocktail Hour

Le Mary Celeste, The Marais

If you’re looking for a great spot to grab oysters or deviled eggs before or after dinner, this divey spot in the Marais is it. Compared to most cocktail bars in Paris, this one is a nice mix of tourists and locals.

Le Syndicat, 9th

Another small cocktail bar with creative drinks, including one with kombucha and cucumber that I enjoyed.

The Hemingway Bar, 1st

If you like 30 euro cocktails in a lavish setting, nothing gets more classic than this hideaway in the back of The Ritz. Go early and put your name down. Be prepared to take out a second mortgage to cover your martini.

Le Meurice, 1st

Slightly easier to get into than Hemingway, and equally expensive drinks in ornate surroundings. Charlie swears by a lunch time burger here as well.

ITINERARY: AN IDEAL LONG WEEKEND IN PARIS

If you have an extra day, the Louvre is an obvious must. It’s so ginormous though that we chose to cross many of the smaller museums off our list and spend more time walking between neighborhoods. Another favorite that we didn’t fit into this itinerary is Sacre Coeur, which has an unparalleled view of the city at sunset and is a fun neighborhood to grab a pre-dinner glass of wine. Definitely go if you have one more night. Also, it should be noted that we went to Paris in December. If it’s warm out, a meat and cheese picnic in the Tuileries or Jardin du Luxembourg is also a must. But the gardens around the Louis Vuitton Foundation are also beautiful for a picnic or romp.

Friday, the Marais + Left Bank >>Start the day at the Pompidou center and explore the contemporary and modern collections >>Spend the afternoon exploring the Marais neighborhood; stop into Merci for home goods and decor, and wander the shops and boutiques. >>Have an early lunch of gluten-free buckwheat crepes at Breizh, along wtih a cup of one of their hard ciders (you’re in Europe, after all!). >> Pop into Musee National Picasso >> Grab a mid-afternoon snack at L’As du Fallafel or Miznon >> GF folks should make a detour to the 10th to grab a midafternoon snack at Chambelland, along with a loaf of gluten-free bread for the rest of the trip >>Head to dinner at Bistrot Paul Bert or Le Villaret for an authentic Parisian experience with all the typical fixings. You’ll be too buttered out by day 3 to handle this.

Saturday, the Right Bank >>Start the day at Musee D’Orsay to take in the vast impressionist collection and early work of Manet and Van Gogh. >>Wander through Napoleon’s old stomping grounds, Les Invalides (with optional detour to either the Musee De L’Armee or the Rodin Museum around the corner) >>Stop for lunch at Au Petit Tonneau for a classic red gingham tablecloth meal of escargot, salad Paysenne and veal stew. >>Continue walking off your meal to the Eiffel Tower for your requisite photo opp. >> Either pop in for more contemporary art at Palais de Tokyo, or metro back to the St. Germain-des-Pres area and enjoy a cafe at a one of the old literary haunts – Les Deux Maggot or Cafe de Flore (touristy, but fun!).

I got a lot of recommendations from readers on gluten-free and healthy restaurants in Paris. Especially in the Marais and the 9th, there are a ton of Brooklyn-esque smoothie and avocado toast spots cropping up. I didn’t find many of them to be worth it, including Wild & The Moon, which is now a chain. Their GF scone and acai bowl were sub-par, if I’m being honest. The produce in France is better across the board, and I’d personally, much rather enjoy veggies in the context of butter, cooked simply and traditionally, doing what Paris does best, than another culture’s attempt at avocado toast. That said, I’m including the full list below in case you want to try any of them, along with some more restaurants that I’ve been dying to try but haven’t been able to get to!

And so the therapy began. My next appointment was the following week for more root canal and the week after that also. Not only that my newly filled tooth was now even more painful than before so more work on my filling ensued (as well as more root canal). To cut a long story short I then chose to have a crown in place of a filling that may, or not, have lasted very long. By now I was helping myself to their filtered coffee and newspaper on arrival. So today, as I again sat in the dental chair I was prepared. I made sure I was sufficiently relaxed, centred and in the present moment before I turned up. What did I do? I meditated before my appointment and then meditated through my appointment! As the shrill piercing sound of the drill reverberated through my head and my face sprayed with water, I simply drifted away to somewhere else – somewhere peaceful. The dentist and the assistant continually asked me if I was okay – I’d slowly nod then zone out again, drifting away and closing the door to the sounds and movements of where my physical body was. And then it was all over! The next time you visit your dentist, it really pays to zone out during your procedure (if possible even before you get there) – especially if you’re nervous about any dental procedure at all like I am. 7 Steps to help you Zone out 1. Get a meditation session in before you arrive for your appointment. If you’re not sure how to meditate, do some slow, deep breathing exercises. I generally take around 4 to 5 slow deep breaths, focusing on the outward breath. 2. Be in the present moment. This is when you’re not thinking anything about the future – even 3 minutes into the future! Nor are you thinking about the past – not even 3 minutes ago. The present moment is now whilst you’re sitting in the dental chair, staring at the ceiling becoming aware of and concentrating on the rhythm of your breathing. 3. Once the procedure starts close your eyes and take your mind within. Focus straight ahead – wherever you perceive straight ahead to be once you have your eyes closed – and think of nothing – just blank – the void – staring at the colours and patterns you can see as you sit in the chair with your eyes closed. 4. If you’re about to receive an injection – as the needle goes in, breathe into that area and continue to concentrate fully on your slow breathing until the injection is over. 5. Once that’s over, resume staring into the blank void that is the inside of your eyelids! 6. If you find it challenging to think nothing, focus on a visual image that makes you feel really, really good about yourself then have a look around and see where you are. 7. Whenever you sense you’re starting to again focus on the drilling or whatever else is happening in your mouth, breathe in slowly and deeply focusing on the rhythm of your breathing and allow every single muscle you become aware of, to deflate and relax. Meditation is a great ‘self help’ tool and when applied during a visit to your dentist – it makes the experience if not enjoyable, at least bearable! Word count: 555

Two centuries ago, when Victorian engineers were designing the latest in transport technology, Japanese knotweed sounded like a very clever idea.

A plant that typically colonised volcanoes in Japan was imported to Britain to help hide, or possibly even stabilise, railway embankments.

Since then its spread has caused much unhappiness amongst home-owners and prospective house purchasers.

It can crack tarmac, block drains, undermine foundations and invade homes. Its presence can be enough to cut a property’s value by up to 20%, or prevent a mortgage lender approving a loan.

But just as new technology created the problem originally, new technology may help to solve it.

How close is it to me?

Five years ago, the Environment Agency commissioned a new app to track Japanese knotweed, using the crowd-sourcing principle.

More than 20,000 people have now downloaded it, and their data has pin-pointed over 6,000 knotweed locations.

“If we can get more people taking an interest and submitting records, so much the better,” says Dave Kilbey, director of Natural Apptitude, which designed and launched the app.

“Hopefully it will mean people will become a bit more aware of the problems, and what to look for.”

So far the results show a particular concentration of knotweed in South Wales, the Midlands, London, Scotland’s central belt and Cornwall – where the plant was also introduced by Victorians into ornamental gardens.

Those looking for a property can use the app to find out if knotweed has been found nearby – but the fact it is not on the map does not mean it is not present; it is simply that no one has reported it.

How to recognise Japanese knotweed

The data provided by the PlantTracker app is also added to the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) atlas, which aims to track the whereabouts of all the UK’s plants and animals, from bee orchids to goshawks.

Even though it has only been available to the public since April, and is not yet fully functional, the atlas has further information about Japanese knotweed locations.

The map shows more than 43,000 historical records for the plant, going back to 1900.

But Purba Choudhury, communications officer for the NBN, says that if there are no records in your area, that doesn’t guarantee its absence.

“Conversely, the record you are seeing might be an old record, and the Japanese knotweed might have been removed since the record was uploaded,” she says.

The South Wales section of the NBN map (above) shows how knotweed spreads along the course of rivers and canals.

In such locations tiny fragments of knotweed float downstream, and quickly establish themselves elsewhere.

What if I find knotweed?

Trying to destroy Japanese knotweed by yourself is virtually impossible.

That is because the roots, or rhizomes, spread rapidly underground, and can regenerate from tiny amounts of material. In fact it can grow at the rate of 10cm a day during the summer.

“Digging it out of the ground can just spread it terribly,” warns Stephen Hodgson, the chief executive of the Property Care Association (PCA).

“If you’ve got it in your garden, either leave it alone, or treat it properly.”

The advice is as follows:

Do not try to dig it up: Tiny root fragments can regenerate into another plant

If you cut down the branches, dispose of them on-site. Compost separately, preferably on plastic sheets

Do not take it to your local council dump. It needs specialist waste management

Do not dispose of it in the countryside. This is against the law

Do not spread the soil. Earth within seven horizontal meters of a plant can be contaminated

Take advice from the Invasive Non-Native Specialists Association (INNSA) or the Property Care Association (PCA) on local removal contractors. Many treatments don’t work

In an experiment being conducted in South Wales, thousands of plant lice were released last summer, in the hopes that they would help destroy some of the knotweed along river banks.

But otherwise the accepted best-practice treatment is for professionals to inject the plant with industrial-strength weed killer glyphosate.

David Layland, the joint managing director of Japanese Knotweed Control, based in Stockport, says it is the only thing that works.

“Once we inject into it, it transfers into the root system pretty quickly, and then it binds with the roots. Over time, it rots away into the subsoil.”

But professional treatment is costly, starting at about 2,500, and going upwards to 30,000 for a major infestation.

Court case

Just as big a worry for many home-owners is the discovery that your neighbour has Japanese knotweed on his or her property, and refuses to do anything about it.

But under the 2014 Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, local councils or police forces can now issue a Community Protection Notice (CPN), forcing neighbours to take action, and fining them if they don’t.

“I think when they are enforced – and they are starting to be enforced – CPNs are very effective,” says Stephen Hodgson.

“But they are, and should be, a measure of last resort.”

In the meantime judges at the Court of Appeal are gearing up to provide an important precedent on who should pay if a landowner allows knotweed to encroach on somebody else’s property.

Next year they will rule on the case of Williams v Network Rail – after two homeowners in South Wales were awarded 15,000 to compensate them for knotweed which had spread into their gardens.

Who are you and what do you do for a living?

I’m a travel addict on the freeway to recovery…….. That freeway leads to the nearest airport!!

Yes, I guess admitting you have an addiction is not the best but a travel addiction is one I’m happy to work on. The rush that fills me from the moment the plane is circling over a new destination is one of excitement and fear mixed with the wonder of courage. Travel takes you out of your comfort zone it challenges even the most experienced traveller.

To travel well is like putting together the ingredients of a good recipe. Trial and error with many tastings can be half the fun. Although since I landed my dream job as a tour host for Twos a Crowd it’s been a culinary magical gift. Travelling the world with like-minded people is a gift that keeps giving to both you and the clients who come on tour.  It creates memories, it can place you out of your comfort zone and it provides a sense of structured adventure.

The essence of travel is moments both heart-pumping and serene; riding a gondola through the mystical canals of Venice; setting a nervous foot on icy, iridescent blue glaciers in Canada. On a quiet evening, cruising in Alaska, a pod of whales silently pass, or the the calmness of the Sistine Chapel.

I travelled across the sea to Morocco and went sand surfing in the Sahara. I drank tea with the local Berber people, and felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and compassion for their warm hospitality.

Kenya provided a pinch-me moment when, snug in my tent, I heard branches breaking and looked out to witness a family of elephants majestically pass our camp site only stopping briefly as the matriarch looked my way.

My role is not all glamorous globe trekking. I’m responsible for the logistics, confirmations, planning, damage control and group dynamics. That can mean dinner reservations at the Eiffel Tower, silent disco-dancing to the beat till all hours in Alaska, coordinating synchronised tyre-swimming in the crystal waters of Croatia, or riding a bike along the Seine canal as the top button of my jeans pops from over-indulgence. It can be offering a silent time for reflection to take in beauty from places like the Canadian Rockies to Monet’s garden.

And then there are the moments, such as when someone turns to me, elation on their face after they have climbed, huffing and puffing, to the top of the Sun Pyramid in Mexico, that I enjoy most. It is the people I connect with and share these incredible experiences with that I find most rewarding.

Where is home?

Where ever my family is. They reside mostly in Melbourne, Australia, and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Where have you been? When did you go?

My first travel job commenced when I was 16 years old when I auditioned for a world travelling ice show extravagance spectacular……with only one year of tuition but many years of classical ballet. We travelled through Asia, Europe then South America. I trace this moment to when my travel addition took hold.

Family life came around so jumping on the plane was not as easy. I trained as a travel consultant then educator for the Tafe system in Tourism. But looking at all those glossy travel images day in day out was not good for a recovering travel addict.

My dream job with Two’s a Crowd commenced three years ago, and I have now completed 13 group tours and met inspiring people from all walks of life. One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a tour host is watching clients gain confidence, you witness them achieve lifelong goals and overcome fear with encouragement, confidence and courage. One thing they have in common is the ability to rise to the challenge that travel offers, from salsa dancing in Cuba with moustached men smoking cigars, to weaving in and out of traffic on the back of a vintage red Vespa in Florence, and yes, red definitely goes faster.

Who did you travel with?

Travel reaches out to the curious and does not discriminate, people from all walks of life have shared my table whilst touring.

When not on tour I travel with my adult children and friends. They both have different travel styles which adds to the adventure. I can sleep under the stars snug and warm by the camp fire in Norway with my son or sip on some fancy French champagne whilst soaking in the hot tub, on the back of a barge, in the French country side with travel clients. I enjoy both and appreciate the difference.

What have been the highlights?

There are so many, but I’ll stick to my last trip with Two’s a Crowd in Morocco.

Even saying the word aloud conjures a feverish imagination. Our local guide throughout was a story teller; he had a way of weaving us through labyrinth alleyways only to stop mid-sentence and in the middle of no-where and walk us across barren land to have tea with nomadic Berber people. They are just as hospitable and humble to fellow travellers as they have been for centuries. An enchanting place where time has been suspended.

What did you least like about your trip?

Okay this is where I get to talk about the negatives of travel??

Really…….? An addict is in denial and will always make excuses but I’m going to try and pull out a negative.

Well……the one thing about travel is getting from A to B……this is the negative. They say it’s all about the journey and not the destination but reclining seats on the bus with someone massaging my feet and a first class plane ticket with champagne would have been the icing on the cake.

Do you have any funny stories from your travels?

I once booked what I thought was a hotel in Japan back in the 70’s when my bible was the book called – Travel on a shoestring – $10 a day!! Yes it was possible. We arrived late in the evening and entered the lobby, as lobbies go we thought we had stumbled across a jack pot, lush upholstery and rich deep burgundy colours surrounded us. As we opened the door to our room our eyes didn’t know where to focus – they went from the heart shaped bed covered in fake pink fur then wandered up to the mirror on the ceiling. We hadn’t read the fine print – the price was per 10mins – We just fell in a heap laughing…..

What were the locals like?

The people of Morocco are genuinely warm, hospitable and gracious. The Berber people are believed to be the original inhabitants going back to 8000 BC. They are nomads and tend to live in the mountains and valleys of Morocco, previously using camels to cross the Sahara desert. Although we passed a few trucks loaded up with the household goods which is now one of the favoured ways to move, many more still walk. But each year the numbers are dropping as the younger generation seeks work in the cities.

They are incredible hospitable, not knowing the family our guide stopped on the side of the road with his pre-purchased block of sugar in anticipation they will accept it but not money. We shared the traditional mint tea with a generous amount of sugar with this humble family. They greet you like a long lost relative and don’t want anything in return other than to share your company. No appointment necessary or invitation.

Even without language we managed to share a funny moment with an old married couple, through the body language we knew they were having a domestic moment while she was preparing the tea. As she broke off a hunk of the sugar to dissolve in the tea his hands were waving around – we gathered he didn’t think it was enough sugar. He was then put in his place with some verbal banter……. Our eyes met and we all just burst out laughing. The tea had so much sugar I’m sure he was the one who consulted with Coca Cola……

There are many different Berber tribes and each has slightly different dress according to the region. They are talented craftsman, from the bright patterned handmade rugs that have influenced many famous designers. Missoni studied these patterns and took influence into his work, the rug I purchased was the root beginnings. To the Islamic geometric tiles which was thought to be used in design so as not to interpret the human form, which would be seen to compete with God. Yves Saint Laurent helped transform the lavish embroidered caftan to fashion heights in the 70’s. He moved there and built a home which is now a museum. The silver workmanship and clothing display of the Berber people is amazing at the Berber museum of Yves Saint Laurent, well worth a visit in Marrakesh.

What was the food like?

Just like the pizza in Italy it has been expanded around the world, Moroccan food has tangled its way into many corners of the globe. One of my favourite dishes I cook at home is Moroccan chicken a recipe that was influenced with the traditional soft spices and herbs, although local products had been added. I found once in Morocco there were many different versions of my favourite dish. The one that I kept looking for on the menu was served with extra citrus that left you wanting a second serve. It was served on a bed of fluffy couscous and came out in the usual tagine bubbling away the citrus aroma filling the air. Although my all-time favourite was the Berber omelette – the eggs are poached in a rich tomato sauce containing paprika, onions, red pepper, garlic with a sprinkle of fresh coriander and parsley on top. It comes out in a tagine, great for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

When I didn’t feel like eating much I loved to order Zaalouk. Generally served at the beginning of a main meal more like an entrée. But with at least seven cooked vegetable salads with bread that can include green peppers, tomatoes, olives, sweet carrots, aubergine dip seasoned with the usual paprika, cumin, garlic and chilli in it, it can become a meal in itself.

Did you learn anything about yourself or the world on this trip?

When you wake up travelling every day and get to experience everyday things in a new way it is such an eye opener. Reflecting on these moments connects us all. Morocco has 3000 kms on the Atlantic Ocean and 500 kms on the Mediterranean Sea. While visiting Essaouria on the coast where the Portuguese architecture, Berber and French food, the maze of allies of medieval structure in the medina, your nose twitches as you walk past the treasure of the fisherman’s catch. Your eyes dart as rag torn men push their rusted supply cart to market, children run through the narrow allies laughing, playing oblivious to their surroundings. Mothers run after their children and love not because of religion or law but from birth just as all mothers do around the world. I felt like I had stepped back in time. Game of Thrones was filmed there and I can understand why.

Would you recommend others travel here?

Most definitely………. Morocco is a tick box destination for the adventure traveller. It challenges all your senses and will leave your heart open in wonder. Its diverse landscape from the Atlas Mountains to the dessert and historic beach towns. Fes, the labyrinth mazes of the largest medina in the world capture and hypnotise you. Copper pots, glowing lanterns, sunlight streams through cotton roof tops, wooden doors ajar feature large looms and rhythmic workers. It’s raw, its dusty you lose all perspective of modern time.

Two days after I left Morocco I was shopping in High Street, Armadale, in Melbourne for my daughter’s wedding dress. Feeling slightly jet lagged I felt like I had discovered time travel. This experience of the medinas of Morocco took me back right into the medieval market place that has been operating every day since it opened. Walking down High Street I was still hearing the shop keepers calling out, smelling the smoke from the tannery, listening to children running through the streets playing. Yes, Morocco will take you back and beyond and stay with you well after you leave.

Do you have any tips for people thinking of travelling here?

When visiting a hammam, a traditional Moroccan day spa for detoxifying and relaxing purchase your own scrub and products. We were scrubbed to an inch of our flesh by a very ‘strong’ vigorous women who had no mercy…….the next day instead of the smooth glow we should have achieved we had red raw skin that needed antiseptic cream to heal.

Other than that, go with an open mind and heart and you will open a door filled with colour and patterns that reflect life from middle ages, history complete with romance, culinary delights that sit on your taste buds. Stay in local Riads, it’s the best way to capture the ancient living of Moroccan homes. They are an oasis in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. The central courtyard is often open where sunlight streams into either a garden or water feature where you can chill and relax.

Morocco will take you down a fairytale adventure, think of One Thousand and One Nights, Aladdin, magic carpets which will open the door to many adventures that await you. You just have to put yourself into the story….

Tales of Morocco from a self-confessed travel addict We don't know about you, but Morocco is HIGH on our must see travel list. So we couldn't resist getting one of our fellow tour hosts at Two's A Crowd to share her experiences with this mystical country.

My grandmother’s uncle, Lawrence Herde, was in the Navy in World War II. He wrote the following article, and I would like to share it since it’s Memorial Day. My grandmother shared it on facebook, so I just copied it here.

These are my thoughts and experiences that took place as I participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima. I was in the 5th Amphibious Fleet, on USS LCT 866, a landing craft of 117 feet long. When we left the States, the craft was in three sections, mounted on the top deck of an LST, in excess of three hundred feet long. There was two sections of another LCT mounted on the top deck of the same LST. It was done this way to transport more of the craft overseas in a shorter period of time. One and two thirds LCTS on one LST.

We left New Orleans in March of 1944l to Guantonimo Bay in Cuba, through the Panama Canal up to San Diego and then to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After arriving at Pearl Harbor, two huge cranes lifted our LCT off the LST one section at a time and placed them in the water. Some small boats then pushed the three sections to an isolated area of the harbor where it was our job to put the LCT together. This was done by pumping water into ballast tanks and lining up the sections, placing a gasket between them, bolting them together with huge bolts and nuts. It seemed like hundreds of them. Some erector set, hey?

After the assembly we stayed in Hawaii, practicing maneuvers and invasions until January 1945. At that time the same two cranes lift4ed our LCT out of the water and placed it on ways that had been built on the top deck of the LST. We were then on our way to the invasion.

On board the LST were part of the 4th Marine Division. Their officers held meetings every6 day on the tank deck of our LCT (mounted on the ways of the LST). They had a paper machet model of Iwo which showed some gun emplacements but they didn’t know about the network of caves that the Japs had armed. The marines had aerial photos and photos were taken by submarines of the island. They had pages of names of every Jap soldier on the island and some civilians.

We arrived at Iwo on February 19, 1945. It was a bright sunny day. The kind that reminded you of a Sunday morning on the way to church. The Air Force had bombed the island for thirty days and armada of navy ships surrounding it, battlewagons, cruisers, destroyers, rocket ships had shelled if for four days. Little did we know that the Japs were safely underground in their caves.

The order came over the loudspeakers for the marines to load the amtracks and the bow doors of the LST were opened and the ramp lowered. One by one the amtracks traversed into the water to their rendezvous point and then continu4ed to circle until all the invasion force was ready. The first wave went in at 9 am.

The Japs were sniping at us. You could see the bullets splash in the water as they hit. I think they were trying to gauge the distance between them and us.

At that time the ballast tanks on one side of the LST were filled with water to put a 30 degree list on the ship. The blocks that were holding the LCT on the ways were chopped out and the LCT went sliding down the ways, (they were greased) just as a ship in a shipyard. There were heavy lines that were tied to the LCT so that it wouldn’t get away and float off, uncontrollable. A cargo net was thrown over the port side of the LST and we climbed down that onto our ship. The motor machs started the three grey marine diesels and I, as an electrician mate, started the generators. The captain (an ensign), got orders over the radio, to proceed to a merchant marine ship to unload its cargo. We had problems with the water pumps on the diesels so we couldn’t do that. After we repaired them it was dark so we didn’t take on cargo until the next day. After taking on munitions, oil drums, and loads of other supplies, we headed for the beach. The sand was black and the island smelled like rotten eggs. What a god forsaken place. We were ready to unload but we started taking mortar fire, so we had to make a fast retreat out to sea again. There was an abandoned rusty hulk of an old ship on the beach and the Japs had a squad in there radio directing fire at the beachhead. The marines spotted them and c leaned them out. We were then able to hit the beach and the Sea Bees unloaded our cargo. We then continued to ferry supplies from the merchant ship to the marines on the island.

The invasion was supposed to last seven days. What a miscalculation that was!!! The island wasn’t declared secure until the latter part of April!

The most memorable thing that I remember was when the marines captured Mt. Suribachi. We were on the beach, when we heard cheers coming from all over the island and when I looked art Suribachi the marines had the flag up and were kneeling down, along side of the flagpole. It reminded me of a Saturday afternoon, when the high school you were rooting for, made a touchdown. That was a deadly score!

Another thing that brought you to your senses, was the smell of rotting flesh, mixed with the smell of gunfire. This was noticeable every time you hit the beach.

The US Marines did one hell of a job in securing that island and they deserve all the praise and respect of every citizen in this country and the free world.
