#i swear i didnt just read manga this year these are just the books that i enjoyed more than i expected

examples include:

paper mario: the thousand year door; played a bit at the age of 9 i think, and happened to stop RIGHT BEFORE VIVIAN APPEARED?? how did i manage to avoid such a swift egg cracking

homestuck; a friend told me to read it when i was 13, i read to act 1 and asked him to remind me and he never did. it occurred to me years later he probably suggested it as a joke. i then read it at 16 years old when a new friend i made suggested to me in earnest (honestly, if i had read homestuck at 13 at best i wouldve been a cringe trans girl while still in middle school and wouldve been eaten alive by the other kids who thought homophobia was hilarious. at worst i wouldve picked up on the ableist jokes as well as the other annoying humor WITHOUT the transgenderism)

warrior cats; a friend told me to read the books in middle school, so i was like 11-13 years old, and i read the first book, but i got too overwhelmed with the sheer amount of books in the series

madoka magica; i watched a couple episodes when i was like 14 but then just forgot to watch more. i watched the rebellion movie without having watched more than that of the og series when i was 16

one piece; i read the first couple arcs via the manga when i was like 12, and then dropped it after my family stopped visiting the library as much. i then tried watching the anime a couple years later, but i didnt enjoy it as much as the manga :( plus much with warriors cats i got overwhelmed with the sheer volume of material

besides these examples, theres a couple webcomics i cannot remember for the life of me but i swear they were the type that wouldve done something to my brain chemistry

thinking about the fact that i nearly enjoyed multiple media throughout my young life that WOULD HAVE changed me forever but instead i only got thru the beginning before entirely forgetting to continue it

Books that suprised me with how good they were:

The Subtweet by Vivek Shraya

It was my first time reading fiction from her and I really enjoyed it! But I know these kinds of novels (detransition baby & little fish by Casey Plett would be same category I think) about lgbt ppl/trans women struggling with their lives and dealing with bigotry with ambiguous/sudden inconclusive endings aren't for everyone, but I tend to enjoy them

This one was about trans women of colour in the music scene in Toronto

And I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would considering twitter plays a big role in the plot lol

Uzumaki by Junji Ito

Just because I had recently read a few of his books that didn't make much of an impact. It was nice to be reminded of how good his writing can be.

One Piece

Read the first 52 volumes (🫣) for the first time this year. Just wanted to commit to reading a long ongoing series BC I thought it would be good for my mental health (it has been!) and ended up enjoying it way more than I expected to

Oshi no ko by Aka Akasaka

Ok this one is a MESS but I like messy murder mystery/thrillers. The premise/first few chapters did not seem great to me but really enjoyed it once the main character reaches middle school. But again it's a mess. A lot going on. Reincarnation. Murder mystery. Children in the entertainment industry. Stalking. Fake dating. Reality tv dating show arc??

you know, they use anti-depressants to keep sexual deviants and sociopaths like ted bundy from wanting to have sex while in jail, i dont understand why they dont just give everyone anti-depressants because literally every person is a little bit of a sociopath. i think putting anti-depressants in the water supply would probably reduce the number of jackasses in the world (terrifying thanks)

no but the bionicle comic was one of the top selling comics of the year when it came out (somehow im not so sure about that.)

CURRENTLY READING

Slow crawl, but I've been reading "No Longer Human" by Osamu Dazai. It's really good but it has some REALLY fucked up content in it so please only read it if you're able to handle that stuff (i say ignoring my own advice)

Another one I've been slowly going through since the end of last year is "Shiver," Junji Ito's collection of some of his shorter stories. It's all horror manga and contains a lot of disturbing imagery and themes.

Part of the reason I'm taking so long to read both these books, despite them both not being that long, is because of all the goddamn OFMD fics ive been reading ever since the first season ended 😭😭😭 i may be slightly (extremely) obsessed with this show ok after all the years of queerbaiting and my pessimism towards us ever getting mainstream queer love stories and representation i was FINALLY PROVEN WRONG and it means so much to me.

also it means i get to savour those other 2 books longer and get more of my money's worth so it's a win-win

1st ever ship: Well, it would have to be Steve/Tony (Marvel); that’s the fic I first started reading and that was my friend who recommended all that fic’s favorite, so that’s what I read! It was fun - back in the Avengers-Found-Family days, when I could still stand the movies.

Last song: had one of my somewhat random character playlists on while working this afternoon, so it’s Tell God and the Devil by Solas.

Last movie: Knives Out, which I finally got around to watching while home over Thanksgiving. It was a good one!

Currently reading: Just finished 1491 and 1493 by Charles Mann - nonfiction about Native Americans before and after Columbus. I’m hoping to pick up Star Wars: Rogue Planet - I finally found someone who’s read it and they enjoyed it, so I don’t have to worry it’s going to be unreadably terrible and I can finally get the lore I’m using for D&D from the source instead of Wookiepedia!

Currently watching: Whatever episode of Rebels I think will get me through my writer’s block on this one fic. Ezra’s serious voice is so hard to capture!
