based on this post about Steve's internalized bi-phobia:

Steve has known for years.

And how could he not when Tommy's freckles come back tenfold each spring like a flower peaking it's head through the last layer of snow? Or when Matthew Carver's hair have a reddish brown tone that turns blond after they spent the last days before summer break practising outside and remind Steve of liquid gold? Or when he watches Star Wars and Harrison Ford, rugged and witty, comes into view and twists his stomach in knots? How could he not know?!

Steve knows he finds guys as attractive as girls, known for many, many years. But.

But he can't. Not when Tommy sneers at that boy in their literature class who likes flamboyant clothes and wants to be an actor on Broadway. Not when the people they meet in Indi who are like Robin and Eddie 'fully queer' and talk about people like Steve as if they're traitors and scams. Not when he reads the newspaper and is assaulted by Reagan and his folk preaching about the 'fag pandemic' or how his father nods in approval and mutters 'another sinner gone for good' when the news play on TV and they occasionally mention the crisis that kills people like Robin and Eddie and him.

Like him....

It doesn't matter how much he loves sleeping with his nose pressed against Eddie's collarbone or that he thinks he'd like to kiss Eddie and hold his hands and wake up beside him until they're old and wrinkly and complain about bad knees.

He is, but he cannot be a queer, half a fairy '50% like me, 50% like Eddie' as Robin jokes.

He will not be a bisexual, he can keep it inside, keep it hidden, buried deep inside him no matter how much it pains him. He can be the straight friend who goes to pride and bakes rainbow cakes and marries a woman even though his heart screams in an ear ringing cacophony, 'Eddie, Eddie Eddie Eddie!'

This is how his 20s go: loud and hurting and yearning and hiding and more noticeably being disgusted and ashamed of himself for simply being able to love men the way he can love women.

He's 29 when his wife, Becky, leaves him. It's not just Eddie and this shameful secret that weights heavy on their relationship, but the scars and all the other secrets he is unable to explain to her that drive Becky finally away - back to Boston. She leaves him alone in that tiny house they bought three years ago with their Saint Bernard puppy they lovingly named Bernadette.

He's 30 when he goes to a coffee meeting of the bisexual group meeting in Chicago, nearly turning the car multiple times, hands and knees sweaty with fear that they won't want him there. They do want him there, welcome him with open arms, and talk about things Steve knows all too well: 'When I fell in love with the first girl, I ran. I like men just fine, so I hid my crush. It's just easier, when your parents hate gays, when the world is shaming our community, when we're dying.' He finds a second home there, and learns - learns about queerness and bisexuality, about trans and gender non conforming people and physical attraction versus emotional attraction. He learns about his past and present and about his future, about their history and where they want to go, how they want to mold their world to fit people like them into it without the pain and the hiding.

Steve is 33 when he finally comes out to everyone dear to him. To the kids who aren't kids anymore and to Joyce and Hopper, and then his parents. this does not go well, but Steve doesn't want, doesn't need their validation anymore. He has his family, his friends, his support system who love him not regardless of his sexuality but because of it, love him because it's part of him. He comes out to Becky, too and that goes much better. they want to be friends, in the future. She's also met Gary who works the the NY Times and wants her to follow him into the big city. So Steve is looking forward how that goes, their tentative friendship.

He is 34 when Eddie comes back from his latest world tour and wants to take a break to rekindle with his uncle, to write new songs, to take a breather. It's only natural that Eddie moves into Steve's guest room and takes over his space on the couch where he cuddles Bernadette while Steve is in the kitchen and makes them grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner.

Its even more natural when their feet meet while watching a movie and they lean into each other in the kitchen, dawn barely there, while they wait for the coffee maker to finish.

Steve's 35 when Eddie finally kisses him and he kisses back. No hurt, no shame, no guilt gnawing on him, Steve finally allows himself to be with the person he truly wants - regardless of their gender.

Dear Matt, I'm here in Manhattan staying with my friends Kyle and Nate. It's so funny because Nate is a Chatty Cathy and doesn't shut up and venting about all his problems while my whole world has been turned upside down. In most of his sharing, he seemed to be the asshole of the situation but as I do best, I still head space for him. I wish I could've figured out the NY public transit system, but everything was too high stress and I felt like that wasn't the right time to embark on that learning journey. I remember you wanted to teach me how to figure out NY transit. I made it to your funereal and it was a lovely service. I learned so much about you through talking to your friends and family. Your brother talked about how you were the runt of the litter so to speak and underdog. He said you were mad he was taller than you and had a better golf swing. Your brother's ego was very apparent to me. I think you are the cooler one, had a heart of gold, and had great taste in music which Chrisie also agreed with during her share. Your mom and ex girlfriend said they didn't like your shaved head (which was strange to speak about the dead) but I loved it. I loved all of you, just as you were. When I was talking to Morgan, she was being standoffish at first, but I confronted her (with love). She told me she saw you OD, turn blue one time, and you drove her out of the house which is a little different than what I recall you telling me. It seemed like she really loved you and only wanted the best for you. She said she was grateful I was able to be there for you in the end. She told me it was hard for her to see you had moved on, even though she had a boyfriend now. Your other ex from high school, Emily, was there and a doll. I really liked her and hopefully stay friends with her. Your friend, Audrey was there too who I adore. It was really nice to put faces to name. Unfortunately, she left early because she was scared of feeling like an outsider and not welcomed being trans in front of your family. I wish I could've been there for her and made her feel safe and welcomed. Your best friend, Evan, seemed like a stand up guy. He reminds me of my old high school friend, Gabe. I didn't know Evan was such a rolling stone and lived out of a van. That's my kind of people lol. I sat next to Christie and Chris at the service. Christie was very supportive and offered me a handkerchief to cry in. Everyone kept telling me how much you loved me and how highly you spoke of me. One thing that broke my heart was that your parents gave Gorgeous back to the shelter. I thought they were going to keep her. I would've kept her if I had the means to because I know how much you loved her. Overall, it was a beautiful service, but I know you would've cringed at some of the religious talk, but what can ya do.

Mile 200 (sorta)

Buried his ass. The week was busy despite taking 3 days off of work. Thankfully 2 were bereavement pay (still need to do my timecard). They were not easy.

My brother got disowned, ny father's a bit of a piece of shit for that and a bit not. Its...complex. I wanna be there for him and help him but at least he has his partner and theyre working.

Buried my grandfather but who cares. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust.

There was a snowstorm this week and it kinda fucked up my workput on saturday so I maaaaybe didnt hit 40 miles but I still worked out the other 5 and have been doing even more cardio because my heart is a G. I am really excited still for working out. I love the progress im making and want, nay, crave more. I got weighed at the doctors, I have a new endocrinologist. Dr Williams is lovely and nice and is actually trans and makes me feel more comfortable than having a cis doctor.

Im stuck up late though and didnt get to cook this week but im excited to cook tomorrow. I have a new cookbook from an influencer that I impulse bought but theyre recipes are all high protein and power lifter focused. I kade enough of their shit before from what they put out for free that it seemed useful and good support for people I like. Speaking of liking that crush is getting worse. I am like 90% sure she doesnt read these, hell no one does. But if you do read this, eh fuck it, good luck figuring out which crush im even talking about.

My bra comes in tomorrow, I got a real pretty one, a designer one. Treat yaself right? My bike comes out in 2 weeks. And this week I buy *IT*. The catsuit. Might have to buy and send back a few as weight shifts and sizing works out, but it will be perfect.

Hey I had a dumb idea since I'm dramatic and gay

One of my most beloved and personally resonant bands that I listen to is Modern Baseball. In the song "Note to self" off of the Album? EP? Holy Ghost the line:

"Where I wanna be still seems a thousand miles away but pretending we feel safe right here gets harder everyday"

Serves as poignant metaphor for the disheartening internal struggle of trying to survive day to day while working on your happiness or your goals seems always almost hyperbolicaly out of reach.

To this I wonder, is it so hyperbolic? Over the course of a week I do abooout 40 miles worth of cardio exercise between biking and running and so it should take about 25 weeks to make it 1000 miles. I've been working on making my life a healthier and happier one these efforts are both physical and emotional. Emotional especially since there has been SO much shit since October. I'm curious to see, if I document it, just how much I change by 1000 miles. I fear they may be farther away than that, but maybe, just maybe, they only seem 1000 miles away.

Well periodically you'll be hearing about it. Maybe weekly.

So you want to include an LGBTQIA+ oc in your book?

Then avoid writing that they...

Are supporting characters with no personality

It's a beautiful thing to have an mc who is an ally, but be careful: does this queer character feel just as real and vivid as the others? Are they blurred? Do they feel foreign?

Try researching more about what you want to write, and avoid writing harmful tropes such as queer baiting and bury your gays, and gay friend trope!

Their personality is actually their LGBTQ indentity

Ask yourself if you feel like you could talk to them of something that's not queer topics! Do those interest feel like stereotypes, or are they legit (art, fighting, writing, making music, etc)?

Try experimenting with new characters and personalities!

They are mentally or physically unhealthy

Yes, as queer people we might have encountered difficulties in life and might have more mental issues than straight cis people.

This doesn't mean that we're constantly depressed, anxious, dissociating, sleepy, or we hurt ourselves, starve ourselves, or have unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Let's try something better: make a queer character healthy, maybe struggling a bit with correcting their families about their identity, but still loved, cared for, happy in their own skin!

Being lgbt will be a problem until the world makes it a problem, remember!

Have been sexually ab**ed (and sexualize this)

I hope I don't actually have to elaborate this.

I know many people have gone through this, but imagine this.

You're a person that falls in the YA reader spectrum (14-17) and you think you might be LGBT. Now, you read a YA book where all mcs are happy and straight and the only queer kid has been literally r*ped several times and their personality is Be depressed and Be abused.

I personally feel SO triggered by these things and they cause even more and more struggles within people who already go through hardships.

Try instead making them more important, stronger, talk about their trauma if they have it, and make the other ocs LGBT, too, but without trauma. Portray their aggressor ending up in jail and suffering all the consequences for what they did, make your oc find a person who doesn't have necessarily s*x with them but who loves them!

Are morbid towards s*x

In the majority of books about gay couples written by straight women, the two are often morbidly attracted to each other, and skip kisses and mutual admiration to jump into hot s*x.

This feels a bit weird. A gay couple works just like a straight couple: if they love each other and are not just friends with benefits, they will fall in love before f*cking, don't you think so too?

Ask yourself:

What do they love about each other?

What is the thing that makes their heart beat about the other person (not about their body, about their soul)?

How do they make each other grow?

What are the things they fight about?

Try reading books by LGBT authors about queer couples, like: They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera (MLM couple) or You're Home by Svea Duhatscheck.

Are the 1% of your ocs

This is called tokenism and it's just as bad as when a white writer makes 1% of their ocs POC.

Having no diversity whatsoever sounds unrealistic, doesn't it?

Add more LGBT people! Not only the canonical gay ocs, write non-binary ocs, neo-pronouns users, trans girls, fem trans boys, lipstick lesbians, asexual people, and so on!

With a little research, you'll know the basics on how to write a good LGBT oc, but don't forget to contact a sensitivity reader!

Is not respected and doesn't stand up for themself

We've all already seen countless stories where the LGBT kid lives in a household where they're not respected, they are bullied at school, and etc.

Why not writing a kid who is respected and validated at home and that bites back when people try to bully them at school? A queer kid who's the coolest in their school not because of their sexual or gender identity, but because of their charisma, intelligence, or popularity?

Conceives their LGBTQ identity as something to be ashamed of

It isn't! Being queer is just as valid, beautiful, and serene as being straight, so why writing ocs that hate themselves for it?

FOR YOU AS A WRITER

A quick guide for the good cishet ally writer:

Do not use slurs such as f*g, f*ggot, f*iry, d*ke, tr**ny, etc. Those words can be used by a member of the LGBT community but it's best if you as a cishet person avoid using them;

Do your research about the category you're writing for better understanding;

Rely on beta readers who are of the category you're writing so to be sure you're not writing something wrong (even if of course everyone has their point of view and their experience):

Listen to LGBT writers even when you feel outraged by what they say about representation or LGBT themes;

Be kind and merciful to your queer ocs;

Avoid stereotypes;

Avoid confusing gender with sexual indentity with sex;

Never stop experimenting.

The Assassination of Harry Styles’ Dignity, wishforwishes, 3.5k (Harry/Nick). This one was in the pubefest, and it’s gryles angst hours gorgeously done as Harry ponders shaving past and present (highly rec this author for gender exploration in other pairings, too).

She Feels So Good, Zedi, 4k, and its sequel, Turns Out She’s a Devil In-Between the Sheets, 3k (Harry/Louis). Mannnn, this universe is so good! Part one is behind the scenes of the Late Late Show after Kiwi, and part two is sexi times in Italy. I utterly adore how this Harry shifts right along with her pronouns.

Fertile Ground, Blake/ @newleafover, 4.4k (Harry/Louis). Jesus wept specifically at this story, CHRIST, so much dysphoria-related angst!! The sheer number of moments guaranteed to make you stare at the wall for one (1) hour, help!

into joy i’m sailing, @hereforlou, 4.6k (Harry/Louis). The tenderness LEAPS off the screen in this one, Harry forgets he’s wearing a dress when Louis comes over for dinner, and I peel my heart out of my throat every time.

I’m a big lurker in fic comments, and these ones give me joy because big names from a time when this Harry drew even more hate than today are here, spreading love and support--who was this author? This story is so GOOD, I’d love to know what else they did! (In this case, a sex toy helps Harry deal with not having a vagina.)

violence of my own touch, 14hrflight/ @got2ghost, 5.2k (Harry/Louis). Chi is yet ANOTHER author to read for spot-fuckin’-on genderfluid characterization (here, it’s alpha/alpha with all kinds of bdsm, dysphoria, angst, and more).

it’s you i want to take apart, orphan_account, 5.9k (Harry/Louis). This author--in the year of our lorde 2012--watched the nail polish interview and created a work of art that went even deeper, their MIND!!! What else did they foretell??!!!!!

Love at Home, @vondrostes, 6.9k (Harry/Xander, Harry/Zayn/Xander). This fic is HYPER-current, like, mid-quarantine, and it features some Zarry history, some pregnancy-related dysphoria, and so much more, plus horses!! (The horses aren’t actually all that involved, I just love to see ‘em.)

Vinyl and Lace, objectlesson/ @alienfuckeronmain, 7.5k (Harry/Louis). This one kills me because it’s XF days, and you get the full-on sensation that this is meant to be kinky play funtime, but it’s going to end up being something much bigger on so many fronts, we love to see it!

Are You Gonna Be My Girl? LoadedGunn, 7.5k (Harry/Louis). EASILY my fave fic this author wrote, basically, Louis talks about his first time with a girl, Harry decides to be that girl, and the dirty talk hits different in the end!

fallin’ and laughin’ at the drinks we spilled, enbyharry/ @non-binharry, 14k (Harry/Louis). Asia’s description in the notes kills me, but #vanlife Louis runs into proud Harry in some bar and shenanigans ensue is the upshot!

But She Doesn’t Know Who I Am series, jaerie, 15k (Harry/Louis). I love that one of the tags here is “louis asks inappropriate questions” because that’s honestly most of what happens!!

o/o angst series, HappyPrincess/ @pattern-pals, 17k (Harry/Louis). I miss Nina’s writing like a phantom limb, and I doubt they’ll return to this universe, but I swear, I will read (and rec) ANYTHING they produce when the muse visits them again! This one is as its title says, and it doesn’t disappoint, heavy sigh.

Grenadine Sunshine, objectlesson/ @alienfuckeronmain, 18k (Harry/Louis). This fic is a peach of a pearl written as a gift for one of this fandom’s best authors, and it perfectly captures the Mood of that author, with so much softness, makeup, gender, and tender.

Alpha Louis/Alpha Harry series, 14hrflight/ @got2ghost, 22k (Harry/Louis). SO MANY GENDER ISSUES EXPLORED HERE, WOW!! College roommates come to terms with their identity, and, mannnnn, do I love it when a/b/o gets unstraightened, if you will, chef’s kiss all around.

Nothing You Can Do (But You Can Learn How to Be You in Time), Teumessian, 28k (Harry/Louis). Also known as the pinterest fic, this one is just so soft and lovely, an identity story told through hair (among other things).

genderfluid!harry series, istajmaal, 33k (Harry/Louis). This entire series hits just as hard today as it did when it was written in 2013, a time when people were aggressively trying to make fetch frat boy Harry happen (some of ‘em still are, lmao). Anyway, this is another author I highly rec for all their other fic, but this one does an A+ job of describing Harry’s gender exploration mid-D madness.

Amor Victorious, HappyPrincess/ @pattern-pals, 38k (Harry/Louis). Another brilliant work from Nina, you feel like you’re on this journey with them, PLUS it dives deep into gender identity struggles, PLUS it throws a/b/o for a loop, all of which equals a big yes from me!

hush., wankerville, 41k (Harry/Louis). One of my all-time faves, this one tackles so many phobias, all while being set in a small-town America high school AU and managing to be the softest, most gorgeous, most hopeful thing in spite (because?) of that.

Time Passed, coffinofachimera/ @belialsmiracles, 66k (Harry/Louis). LISTEN, I WILL NEVER, EVER SHUT UP ABOUT THIS FIC, I can only hope the author will bless us with a timestamp or something else entirely, it’s so beautifully done, it makes you think of nothing else for days, it RUINS you for other fic (I highly rec the author’s other work, too). You’ll never look at Tokyo Harry the same way again (or listen to “She” or “Fine Line” without getting more than a little misty). GOLD STAR!

Without Sex Work, Philly Trans March Would NOT Exist

Dr. Maya Angelou, hailed as a national best-selling author, a genius, a visionary, a god, Our Mother, Our Ancestor…was also a sex worker. But her sex work is not mentioned as much as her known accomplishments, although she speaks of her experiences as a sex worker unapologetically, in her book entitled, “Gather Together in My Name”. Marsha P. Johnson, a known Trans rights activist, used income from her sex work, to create housing for Queer and Trans youth in NY. The sex work of Revolutionary Malcolm X is also described in Manning Marable’s, "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention." Oftentimes, the words sex worker and role model are not used in the same sentence. But history has proven that sex workers have contributed to society in many ways, that are often invalidated and diminished under the politics of so-called respectability.

On October 10, 2010, a beloved Black trans woman from Philadelphia, named Stacey Lee Blahnik was brutally murdered in her South Philly home. She was a Legend of the Ballroom scene and was the Mother of the House of Blahnik. I did not personally know Stacey, but she had deeply touched the lives of many of my friends, who grieved their lost heavily. In support of my friends and fellow community, I attended Stacey’s funeral. It was the first funeral I attended for a Black Trans person. And it transformed the way I viewed Black Trans Lives and the movement towards liberation forever. I was deeply affected. As an empath, I felt every tear fall, every scream yelled, and every heart broken. Although overwhelmed with emotion, that day I came to understand that these were war times. That the lives of Black Trans ppl, especially Black Trans women, did not matter to most. With the life expectancy of Black Trans women at 35 years of age, as a Black Trans man, and as a king conscious of his own inner divinity…I knew I had to stand up and do something for my people. This was apart of my purpose.

In 2011, I founded and organized the Philly Trans March, as a response to Stacey’s Blahnik’s murder and the lack of action and response from local police, detectives, and government officials. The Philly Trans March is an annual protest and rebellion against the hate, injustice and inequity faced daily by Trans individuals, with a focus on the experiences of Black and Brown Trans adults, elders, and youth. That year 350 people marched in the streets of downtown Philadelphia, in support of Trans Liberation. It was a monumental and historical demonstration that continues to this day. In 2019 before the pandemic, 750 ppl joined the Philly Trans March and marched in the hoods of West Philly. It was the biggest and most impactful one yet.

Despite having a planning committee, the first Philly Trans March was not easy to organize. Funds were needed for this grand idea of mine to come to fruition. Initially, I planned every fundraiser under the sun that I could think of. From Trans fashion shows, to selling tee shirts, to movie nights, to talent showcases, to art exhibits, to bake sales…there was even a Pancakes for Supper event with a Live DJ! But despite my creativity, self-determination, and excitement, most of these fundraisers had low attendance and participation. As founder, I felt that I needed to do something to secure the funds needed for this particularly important March.

The same year that the Philly Trans March was founded, I began engaging in sex work to survive. There is a misconception that Black Trans men, automatically benefit from male privilege, once we medically transition, and that our lives become void of struggle, violence, and oppression. Although some privilege is seemingly gained, Black Trans men, like Black cis men, are ultimately feared, criminalized, targeted disproportionately by law enforcement, and discriminated against. We are seen as walking threats to literally everyone, even other Black men…and literally overnight. And as a Black Trans man, without a legal name and gender change at the time, finding safe and secure employment was extremely difficult. So, I began putting my earnings from sex work towards the funds needed to make the Philly Trans March a success. And for the first 3 years, the Philly Trans March was mostly funded through sex work. No one knew of my efforts, but without sex work, the Philly Trans March would not have existed. Since then, the Philly Trans March has gone on to inspire other powerful marches in places like New Orleans, Atlanta, and other major cities in the south. In Philly, the Trans March has prompted local government officials to create new laws and make policy changes, to create a safer Philadelphia for all individuals.

When people are allowed to work as they choose and make a livable wage, great things can manifest. And that includes sex work because sex work is real and legitimate work. PORTRAITS OF CONGRESS: CHARLIE KEETING (NY-10) BY SOPHIA HOTCHNER - AUGUST 11, 2020 - THE WASHINGTON POST

When I sat down with Representative Charlie Keeting - an environmental activist and the current NY-10 Representative, there was an immediate sense of warmth. Maybe that had to do with the fact that the bustling-yet-quiet walls of the cafe they had chosen to meet in was a beautiful shade of corals and yellows, or maybe it had to do with the Representative’s dedication to making sure I was comfortable, but there’s no denying that Charlie Keeting has a warm heart beating in his chest.

I met Charlie Keeting (who uses they/them and he/him pronouns interchangeably) back at the beginning of the year when I had the opportunity to collect information on current Democratic activists, of which Charlie had made the list. Their activism in trans health and trans safety (they’re agender themselves), their work with LGBTQ+ youth within their district and beyond, and their unflinching stance on climate change have made them a bright young face in Washington - one many kids and young adults can see themselves in. On top of that, their eclectic style and infectious laughter certainly made me feel right at home within our small world of interviews.

We order before we get started, Representative Keeting settling on a Mediterranean Salad - “Vegan,” they say, “I’m working on it, but it’s not always feasible for everyone, and that’s okay,” - and then we begin our conversation about what it means to be a leader in congress at an age so young, what’s next for the New York Representative, and the upcoming elections.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: So, Representative, tell us a little about yourself - where you grew up, what your life was like at a young age?

REP. KEETING: I grew up in a small suburb in north New York - Rochester, to be exact. I was more than fortunate enough to be able to grow up in a household that was extremely LGBTQ+ friendly, and despite being a child of divorce, really lovely. My mom came out when I was six. She told my dad she had met someone else and we just kind of moved on from there. My upbringing was... a bit abnormal to say the least for two reasons: one, my dad and mom remained best friends (which I know doesn’t always happen in divorces), and two, my dad was halfway across the country. Regardless, my parents were more than supportive of everything I did, and Rochester might have been a small town, but it has a lovely queer community within it.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: It’s really great that you had such a supportive community at such a young age.

REP. KEETING: Honestly, I’m thankful for it every day. Growing up being encouraged to explore myself, my interests, and my identity is definitely one of the reasons I feel so comfortable today.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: Has DC and the world of politics changed that at all?

REP. KEETING: I certainly don’t always have the freedoms that I’d like to have in regards to how I’d like to dress. Regulations on the hill for what constitutes as formal are still extremely gendered. It’ll be something I work on if I get the chance to return to the Capitol in the winter.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: Yes, you’re up for re-election, correct?

REP. KEETING: I am indeed.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: How are you feeling about the campaign?

REP. KEETING: I’m feeling pretty good. If the citizens of New York City want me in office, they’ll put me there, you know? If that’s not what they want, I’ll surely be doing this work in other capacities. I’ve been in and around Washington since 2012 doing different sorts of climate and political work, so I’m pretty confident that I won’t be leaving the city or the realm of politics anytime soon.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: You did work for different politicians before you were elected office, correct? Writing grants and doing climate crisis research?

REP. KEETING: Yes, I used to be knee deep in grant-writing on any given day in the first few years i spent here. I don’t think I miss it completely, but I do miss some of it sometimes.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: Did you always know you wanted to go into politics eventually? Or was it just a natural next step?

REP. KEETING: I can confidently say the younger version of me had no idea they were going to end up in politics. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but my parents have always been supportive no matter what I attempted to make of my life. I knew from a young age I was heavily interested in science and the arts, so I figured I’d end up doing something in those categories. I still kind of do, and I still paint and create art displays and curate galleries when I can, but that’s definitely taken a back seat to the science side of my interests, which have turned very political with the climate crisis. It was definitely more of a natural next step to slide into office.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: Sometimes things just fall into place, don’t they?

REP. KEETING: It certainly feels like it. My degree was like that too. So many people ask me why I double majored in Climate Science and Art History, but it just felt right. Moral of the story? Pursue your interests as much as you can. Hobbies, career options, whatever they are. Pursue it. Nothing is too small to care about.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: That’s good advice. I know younger me would have loved to hear that more. On the topic of your schooling and on the climate crisis - you’re nearing the completion of your PhD, yes? How has your schooling and your continuing education informed your stance on certain topics?

REP. KEETING: Since I had the opportunity to complete my masters degree in Climate & Society, I was able to put a lot of that work to use right away because it was a partially practical degree. I ended up working for a couple of environmental firms here in DC, working with politicians to help implement eco-friendly laws, but also tangible laws. I’d say that’s the biggest way my education has helped impact my stance -- in a much more actionable way. Studying both sides of it allowed me to see the changes that needed to be made from the science side of it, but also taught me the best way to explore how things can be implemented in a manageable and realistic way.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: At the same time, you’ve been a large inspiration for a lot of young activists, both within Climate Activism as well as in the LGBTQ+ Community - what are your thoughts on that? Do you have any words of wisdom for your followers?

REP. KEETING: As much as it’s an honor to be seen as an inspiration, I’m not the first and I’m certainly not the last to fight for what I’m fighting for. I’m just one person who was elected into office to help do the work from a legislative perspective. Connect with your local communities, find workplaces and grassroots communities that stand for what you believe in. I didn’t start in politics, after all - I started there, and it most certainly shaped who I am today. And - as cheesy as it is - follow your heart. As long as you love what you do, you’ll never be really bored a day in your life. Frustrated? Maybe. But never bored.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: On that note of inspiration and firsts, this is your first term in congress, and you’re only 34. How has being a young activist in Congress shaped your experience?

REP. KEETING: I wish it wasn’t true, but people do tend to take me less seriously. What part of lack of respect that falls under is up for debate, but I do think my age definitely comes into play. It’s easy to claim seniority and push that ‘seasoned minds know best’, but I don’t think that’s true. I think what it really comes down to is how dedicated you are to your work, no matter your age. At the same time, being a young representative in Congress has allowed me to connect with a demographic of young voters that has felt consistently under-heard from the older members of the administration. By no means do I want to be a spokesperson, and I’m certainly not going to be young forever, but I think my age has helped me form an immediate connection with a lot of younger individuals who are maybe voting for the first time, or voting for the third or fourth time, who want to see their ideas moving into congress.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: Do you have any plans for last minute moves in the House before your re-election? Or will you be waiting for a hopeful new term to bring forward any movements or bills to the table?

REP. KEETING: A combination of both. I know there’s always the chance that I might not get another term in office, so I definitely have a few more things up my sleeve before the elections potentially take that chance. But I can confidently say that if I’m able to take up office again in January, rest assured I won’t be playing nice. I’ve got a lot I want to do, and a team behind me ready to help me make it happen.

SOPHIA HOTCHNER: Last question, for the sake of the fact that I kind of have to - you’ve vocalized your support for the Democratic Candidates, correct? How do you see the landscape of Capitol Hill changing depending on who takes office?

REP. KEETING: I most certainly have. I’m a vocal supporter of Berkeley-Zafar, and I’ll continue to be so. I’m not sure exactly how my job will change after the elections quite yet, but definitely the majority in the house will shape how much I’ll be able to get done next term, considering most of my politics aren’t quite… in line with most of the GOP’s. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. We still have some time left on the campaign trail, and I’ll be excited to see how it all plays out, that’s for sure.

I thanked Representative Keeting for sitting down for lunch with me as we wrap up, talking more casually about the meal and they ask me how everything’s going at the Post. It’s small conversations like this that make it easy to see why the Representative is only projecting upward. Their interest in community building and cross-disciplinary studies make them a strong candidate for politics, despite not growing up rooted in politics. They care and are passionate about their work, and it’s easy to feel that through the few conversations I’ve had with them. I’m positive others who have interacted with Representative Keeting know exactly what I’m talking about.

Gabriel Hargrave Author interview

A little introduction: Hi! My name's Gabriel Hargrave, but I usually go by Gabe. I'm a 35-year-old trans man living in Rochester, NY, with my cat, Regina Dentata. I write queer erotic romance novels while I'm not reading, blogging, editing, or playing TTRPGs.

When did your love of books begin? The way my mother tells it, I asked her to read me the same books over and over again when I was two and three years old. She apparently used to read to me a lot in utero, so maybe it started all the way back then. I began reading at a really early age because I had memorized the words she'd read to me and started recognizing them in other books.

When did you start to have the wish to become an author? I started writing from about the time I was in kindergarten. My first "published" book was actually a short story I wrote in third grade that my teacher liked so much she had it sent to the school's bindery. I probably still have it somewhere. My dream for pretty much my entire life has been to be a published author. That I finally get to live out that dream is incredible.

How have you found the process for becoming an author? I self-published, so my experience is different from authors who went the indie or trad-publishing route. The process of actually writing a novel is months and months of drafting and editing and working with critique partners and beta readers. All of that's pretty similar regardless of how you publish. But the self-publishing process was actually rather simple. It's the self-promotion and marketing that takes a lot of time and effort.

What would you say to those wanting to become an author? Do it! But don't just jump right in. Despite having been writing my whole life, I've only just now published a book. I spent a good 30 years coming up with stories, writing them down, typing them up. I have dozens of unfinished books sitting on my computer or in notebooks because I couldn't quite find my groove. It wasn't until last year that I found the story that I needed to tell, the one that wouldn't let go of me until I'd finished it and shared it with the world. In all that time, I'd been reading--other people's books, sure, but also about writing. And I'd been learning about grammar and syntax and structure, figuring out how best to create characters and plots, and a million other things. Writing takes time if you want to do it well.

Tell us about your book/books: The Orchid and the Lion is the first book in a trilogy. It's a queer m/m erotic BDSM romance set on a space station 150 years in the future. It follows the star femme Dom at a famous brothel as he navigates training a trans man sub while also trying to investigate some troubling rumors about the paradise he's called home for almost a decade. When I started writing it, I had no real idea what was going to happen. I just knew that I wanted to write a BDSM story that was healthy, consensual, and character-focused. A lot of the depictions of kink/BDSM in erotica and romance novels are dangerously incorrect to the point that I can't bring myself to read them. My hope is that this book (and the other two in the trilogy) can help change that trend. I'm also hoping that it will help start a trend of positive representation for sex workers in fiction, something that is sorely lacking at the moment.

What do you love about the writing/reading community? I've met so many wonderful, supportive people, including my critique partner and most of my betas, through the writing community. While there's often a lot of drama and writing discourse that floods Twitter on and off, the heart of the writing community is people who love telling stories and who want to share them with the world. And I think that's really beautiful.

If you could say anything to your readers what would it be? First of all, thank you! Everyone who's contacted me so far about my first novel has been so sweet and supportive. I love hearing how much y'all love Dorian, Laith, Kenny, Frank, and the rest of the characters I've created. I'm also really touched by how willing people are to help spread the word about this book. Between copies sold and pages read through Kindle Unlimited since the book came out three weeks ago, I've already reached a larger audience than I expected. Keep up the good work of spreading the word! And make sure to leave a review on Goodreads and/or Amazon. Secondly, the sequel is coming (as are some short stories). I'm hoping to have the second book in the trilogy ready for publication sometime next year (possibly May or June, but don't quote me on that).

Five Incredible Women’s Skateboarding Non-Profit Organizations

If you have ever wondered, “How can I actively support the women’s skateboarding industry?”. I would say to look no further than considering donating or volunteering to non-profit organizations. If you are unsure of which one you should support, here is a short list of nonprofit organizations around the world that may end up being close to your heart. Donate, buy their merchandise, volunteer, or just share their achievements whenever you can. I only hope more organizations like these open around the country and around the world.

Skate Like a Girl-@skatelikeagirl

Skate Like a Girl is a non-profit organization that operates out of San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Their goal is to teach young girls confidence, life lessons, social justice, and how to skate. The instructors and directors are some of the biggest influences in women’s skateboarding, such as Kristin Ebeling, one of the co-founders of The Skate Witches. They are also an inclusive organization that asks for pronouns of their students. Many skate sessions are target towards girls (cisgender or trans), trans, or gender non-conforming. There are some sessions that of course allow cisgender males, but it’s a wonderful thing to have sessions where people of conforming or non-conforming genders are welcome with open arms. The skate programs are for children ages 12 and under, some for older ages, but they also sponsor skate contests for all ages. Currently the organization has their annual All Hands On Deck fundraiser that supports each of the program cities. They are selling long sleeves and beanies to rep your support of the organization. Skate Like a Girl San Francisco is also currently looking to build an indoor skate park for their program. They are very close to their $3,000 goal, so get donating! You can also make a general donation on their website. If you are interested in starting a local chapter for your area, there is an application on the website as well. Skateistan is an incredible organization “…for children aged 5 to 17 with a focus on girls, children living with a disability, and children from low income backgrounds” in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa. The organization takes donations to fund each child’s journey through the “skate school”. Not only do they learn how to skate, they also teach topics such as nutrition, human rights, cultural studies, the environment, and how to be leaders. They also give the opportunity for children who are not currently in school, or are not able to attend, to be able to come to the skate school five times a week so they can learn the curriculum that most normal schools teach. They are only a few days away from unveiling their new school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which will make it the organization’s fifth school around the world. You can donate just once, or if you donate ten dollars or more a month, you can become a “Citizen of Skateistan”. They also have merchandise and a movie for sale that benefits the schools. EXPOSURE Skate is an annual event every year in California to benefit women. The event is an all-women’s skate contest, that displays hundreds of women skaters and gives out a major cash prize, which is something that does not happen a lot for women’s contests. The event also raises money for local survivors of domestic abuse. There are many ways to donate, you can make general donations, sponsor the event with your own brand, or make donations to the prizes for the skaters. Sk8er Girl Caribbean is a non-profit organization that focuses on girl empowerment and skateboarding around the Caribbean. The Girls Riders Organization was founded by Courtney Payne Taylor, and is based in New York, NY. There are also other crews in Colorado, Indiana, Tennessee, New Jersey, and Virginia. It is a group dedicated to helping girls of all ages. Their goal is to inspire, educate, and support girls in a positive space. Being the only girl at the skate park can sometimes be discouraging. But having a safe place like this to go will surely help girls to lose their fear, gain the confidence they need, and excel at the sport. The first night of debate went well. I went in loving Inslee and went out the same way. He didn’t get much chance to talk what with the moderators asking Elizabeth Warren questions about 4 to the others 1. When Jay did get to speak about climate change and calling out CEO’s, I thought he was dynamic. He really puts his money where his mouth is. I wish more people would research him. He had the best answer of what this country’s greatest threat is when he answered ,”Donald Trump.” Colbert made fun of Inslee for interrupting Warren about the rights of women. I must say that as a woman, that never even occurred to me because I was looking at her as a candidate. He has also been raked over for trying to interject with that finger in the air. Hmm.. so polite. DeBlasio got in a great line about not blaming immigrants for their problems but blaming the corporations, otherwise he seemed like a bully. Warren and Booker were competent. Klobachar, Gabbard and Ryan should call it quits. I like O’Rourke but he just seems too sweet. I loved his close because he referenced current events like the kids in cages and student protests which didn’t seem like running for student council Pres. I was impressed with John Delaney who I hadn’t known much about. But Julian Castro won the night. He still wouldn’t be my first choice but he did everything right. He was truly Presidential and seemed to resonate with everybody. He was forceful, down to earth and seemed to know what he was talking about.

Night 2 of the debates was a bit more lively. Hickenlooper will probably impress a few conservatives with his insistence that the Dems shouldn’t identify so much with socialism. Gillibrand seemed like tonight’s bully and it is time for her to go along with Bennet, Swalwell and Williamson. Now, Marianne got a lot of shit but I agree with her on some basics. Preventative medicine and love being the answer is not stupid. These are things we don’t put enough stock in so why laugh it off? She is right about the chemicals and climate and why we are so sick in this world. She is right about state sponsored crimes and child abuse at the border. I thought Gillibrand repeated herself too much but she is right about putting too much money into private prisons. Buttigieg had a great point about the ‘free college for all’ thing by looking at the reality of those who don’t want college, a decent minimum wage and the rich paying for their own schooling. He is also quite perceptive about republicans using religion while separating families which gives them no right to use God’s name. He was a bit sweaty but poised and measured all the way through. I am a big Andrew Yang fan and his money to all every month is something I have thought a solid idea for years but he is not Presidential at this point. He should be in the cabinet because he is an idea person but he sort of nervously choked on his first question about his signature piece. I loved that he didn’t wear a tie and his closing statement was awesome. Bernie gave us no surprises but the red, white and blue reflected in his glasses was fascinating. I did love his line about a hemisphere problem that we have and called out the Yemen crisis. Like the night before, Biden seemed to get more time than the lesser knowns. He started out smooth and easy and ended serious and defensive because of the jabs he received. Kamala Harris stole the night with some of those. She jumped on Williamson’s mention of reparations to explain to Biden why his recent rhetoric of segregationists was so painful. This is why I love debates, it can change everything. I can’t really imagine anyone else taking on Trump at this point. She had some great lines like calming the boys down about no food fights but putting food on the table. Her close was a bit halting but she fired up the crowd as if she was already President.

The after shows zeroed in on the flaws which will unfortunately define some of them. The way we loop ‘Bookers look’ or ‘Williamson’s love not fear for political purposes’ can belittle the progress we can make. I am right in there watching it but it gets old. Trevor Noah said that many try but it was the Right time for Harris to play the race card. Race is already playing a part as some birtherism is erupting eluding to her Indian mother and Jamaican father. Don Jr. got the wheels in motion by retweeting some garbage about Harris not being an “American black.”She raised about 2 mil after the debates.
