Reaptober Day 5 – Intertwined

hi! i am not sure if you will have good advice for this but your photography guide made me think about this issue. i grew up quite poor (school supplies were a struggle every september) and now as an adult i am not as financially stable as id like. this has made me very scared to use any art supplies because im always thinking that im wasting them on not good enough projects or not good enough skills or similar thinking. however that leads to me having supplies bc of gifts and whatnot (ie watercolor paper) but not using it out of anxiety. do you have any advice? thanks!

There are two ways that I go about getting over this kind of issue:

Get out the supplies right now and start making any marks. Cut a piece of watercolor paper in half. Draw a line down the center of a page in grease pencil. Do anything to just start using it to get over the "can't open it, must save for special occasions/projects" mindset. Once you've broken the seal on a first use, it's a lot easier to use tools or notebooks or paints a second time.

Plan projects for yourself like they're assignments. Give yourself a deadline and materials list, write it up like a school assignment sheet, and then do the assignment.

And, if it helps to think of it this way: you're likely hesitant to use your materials because you don't want them "going to waste," but at the moment they are being wasted because they aren't being used.

It is solidly my opinion that art supplies used for art are never wasted; not all "art" is meant to be kept and a part of the process of creating art is practice, which should lead to massive piles of clumsily made, "bad" art that you wouldn't want to hang up on the wall but is nonetheless a part of the process of making art that you'd want to hang on the wall.

You may be looking at the watercolor paper and thinking "I shouldn't break into this because each piece of this paper needs to be something special to show that I value this gift" but you don't get better at painting with watercolors if you use them on printer paper. You need to use the paper (and the paints, and your brushes) to maintain and improve your fluency with the medium.

Many people are hesitant to "waste" sketchbooks or good paper or canvas or expensive paint because they think they are throwing away the good things they *could* make if only the had the perfect plan and create the perfect piece of art with each page and each new tube.

But these things are consumables. Your sketchbook is not a guitar, and it is not a finished song, it is a set of strings. The lovely watercolor paper is a gift for you to make art with, but it is also a gift for you to *practice* making art with and the practice is just as much a part of the gift as a finished artwork would be.

So you're not wasting it if you just get out your paper and start painting with no plan, or if you "mess up" a piece, or if you just use the paper for practice.

So, if you're trying to get yourself to use watercolor paper specifically, I have an assignment for you:

Watercolor Thumbnails Assignment

Materials: Watercolor paper, 2 colors of paint (your choice), Hard pencil Tools: Ruler, Small and medium brushes, Palette

Instructions:

Using your pencil and your ruler, divide the page into 10 equal rectangles.

Visit this website and click the "surprise me" button. Select 10 artworks to create monochrome thumbnails of. (you can click as many times as you need to, but the goal here is to do thumbnails of art that you aren't familiar with rather than seeking out art that you know well for this assignment)

Reproduce each of the images as a monochrome thumbnail in the ten rectangles you've marked on your paper. You don't have to mix a unique color for each rectangle, but you should mix a few different colors and use only one for each rectangle. For instance, if you are using green and yellow paint, some images should be yellow, some should be green, some should be green-yellow, some should be yellow-green.

Purpose:

To use your materials

Work on achieving different values with single colors by layering or diluting your paint.

Composition study

Time Limits:

Once you have collected your ten images and have your station set up, you should take no more than one hour to complete your thumbnails.

Okay, now for a lot of rambling!

Part 3: Episode 1,010: “The Idol Whose Smile Disappeared”

I really wanted to pick a part and episode that lined up lyrically so I was glad that I could pair part 3 with this episode! For this part, I wanted to follow the story of Kayoko who is struggling from success as an idol (at least from the perspective of Futoshi the officer).

To match with the lyrics, I wanted to pick clips where Kayoko was stressing over her career and eventually finding confidence again. I knew I had to add the scene where she was pelted with (I think?) makeup sponges by her idolmates. That scene was super over the top and I think definitely sells the weird factor for this episode.

In the episode there are two separate shots showing her bright red shoes, one during a scene where Kayoko is crying and another when she is confidently striding outside. Initially I wanted to have the separate shoe scenes transition into each other but couldn't make it work the way I intended. Instead I wanted to keep with the theming by altering the colors of the first few clips to a monochrome red. Then, when we transition to a much happier Kayoko, we see the red shoes but in a brighter, colorful environment, reframing the symbolism of the color.

Part 9: Episode 976: “Follow Them! Detective Taxi”

Now this part has way less thought put into telling a story and instead I wanted to focus on how weird this episode is. This was the first part I worked on for the project so I was learning a lot about video effects.

For the first half of the part, I wanted to have the slide transitions to match Conan and Kogoro running around, emphasizing how hectic everything is.

With the middle section I wanted the energy of the clips to slow down at "don't wreck your brain." Sort of like Conan and Kogoro pausing to get a reality check of everything.

Then for the last section the energy is ramped up again because guess what, armadillo.

This was a super fun project and I'm happy I got to join it! I've never made AMVs before and only done very minimal video editing prior to this so I definitely learned a lot. Also, I haven't gotten to the newer episodes of Detective Conan yet, let alone any of the Urasawa episodes. It was such a tonal whiplash after I just finished an intense arc in the 400s and jumped over to watch these episodes lmao

I almost forgot about Guila, but I'm so glad I didn't because she deserves her own glow-up. So here she is!

This time, her design is heavily inspired by one of her Grand Cross outfits. I thought the red and gold suited her, but I also wanted to keep her pinkish color scheme from canon, so she's more on a red monochrome scale. I also got two different things showing her hair up vs her hair down; having her hair up makes more sense to me since she's a knight and works with explosions so often, but I also wanted to let her have her hair down sometimes. She deserves a good hairdo, so I built on what she already had in canon and made it fuller this time around. Also, I figured I would showcase what Guila's eyes look like when they're actually open; I don't believe we ever got a moment like that for her in canon where we actually see them open and know shit is really going down, so I thought I'd do it this time around. What will that moment be? Who knows! We'll find out.

Guila's probably going to have relatively the same role this time around, but I feel like we could do a bit more with her. This includes expanding on her relationship with Zeal and her struggle with raising him as his only family, and possibly some bitterness towards her father for having disappeared, as much as she misses him. Plus, I think we can expand on her friendship with Jericho since the two of them were always cute to me, as well as the other Holy Knights like Gilthunder and Howser, since I don't think we ever saw her interact with them that much.

And finally, here he is! The man whose song would best fit him is "The Main Character" by Will Wood, and you CAN NOT convince me otherwise. You know him! And either love or hate him! Cookie Masterson!!!

Cookie's Design is probably the one that has actual changed the LEAST since the last time I drew him. The beret, short trenchcoat, and big pants combo has always felt very Cookie-like to me.

He's a lil' pastry demon (how ironic hehe 🤭). Consisting of cookie dough with chocolate chips in it (and a hint of red velvet), sprinkles galore, juicy cherries, and buttercream! Very yummy, but you can't eat him. That's still cannibalism (/j?). Though his anatomy does consist of lots of strawberry jam and candy (that's another story for another day, though).

His color palette strays the most from the monochrome theme, though it's due to how darker shades of yellow tend to look (which in my humble opinion, majority of the time they look like ass.) Thus, I went with a delicious red instead and kept them as accents. 👍

Now, without further ado, let's take a gander at the final part of our interview!

Gluttony's Deal

"You mentioned there was someone who accompanied this journalist?"

"Ah yes! Gluttony! How could I forget about my golden child? Our relationship consisted of the most struggles. Trust me, it was one hell of a job trying to get him to come out of his shell.

From the start, I could sense that there was something... off, about that man. He seemed to have a character, and if he was able to make fast friends with my assistant, then he must've had charm. Yet, I could never pinpoint a proper flaw in him. Not to say he was an angelic little thing-ha! In fact, he was quite the opposite!

He was filled to the brim with flaws! While I wasn't as sure back then, by season three, I had a whole list! He was quite selfish, had some moderate anger issues (but not as bad as Wrath's, I don't call him Wrath for no reason), had very childish tendencies... it just goes on and on and on! I won't bore you with it, though. Okay, well, I will bore you- but just for a little!

After one show during season one, he had an argument with Lust. I believe from what I overheard and was told by other employees, Lust had said the wrong combination of words and caused Gluttony to lunge at him and try to kill him with the pen stuck in his hair. My! Was it a sight to see!"

"Oh! Uh... d-did he face any charges or consequences?"

"?"

"Ma'am, you are aware that's attempted murder... right?"

"...

Anyways! As season one was coming to a close, I decided now was the time to up our offer... I purposed the deal... and to my surprise... he declined. I tried not to think much of it. Perhaps he was just taken aback by the offer, so I brushed it off until the end of the next season... ish. I admit, I did try to persuade him throughout the season, and my bickering was probably the reason behind the second decline at the end. In the third season, I made it my GOAL to get him to change his mind. I could see the potential in him, the perfect opportunity to change his life! I just could not let him let this go to waste, a whole FEAST of dreams just for him!

And that's when it hit me.

Feast...

That was it. He was a piece of everything to me, a piece of everything I had on my list. A 'glutton' to put it lightly. I hadn't been whispering the right words to him.

If I wanted him to hear me out... I needed to him to hear what he'd like.

As I saw clearly with Lust, he had always despised the plate second place had given him... so why not give him the whole course. The 'first-place' meal... to be a bigger, more successful star than the other three...

And what do you know... it worked.

The day I convinced him... I always keep that one in mind... the whole thing is why I made the Lesser Contracts for producers anyway!Though as I look at my shining star now, I always keep another thing in mind... a small lingering that tends to... give me the chills."

"And what would that be?"

"Regretting the monster I had also awakened that day."

Interview 1 Epliouge (Where are They Now?)

"...Well... Ms. Director, I thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn more about you and your company! H-Hehe!"

"Oh of course darling! I will forever enjoy getting the opportunity to... spread my influence to others!"

"If it is okay... I have one more question I'd like to ask before our first session ends."

"Be my guest!"

"I noticed that not all members of the five you speak of don't seem to visit the studio these days... how are the five doing?"

"Yes, yes! A great question I am THRILLED to answer! The five still work for me! Even if they refuse to believe so!

Wrath has been hosting our little comedic gameshow! 'Quiplash' as one of my assistants named it. It might look like he's gotten his act together, seems a little more patient! Well, don't let him fool you. The claims he actually went to get help for his anger issues? Lies! I never kept track of it, but he got hit HARD with relationship issues in the early 2000s, 'big wake up call' for him as he puts it. All he learned from those? How to hide his issues. He also has kids now, but that's not THAT important.

Now, I pay Ignorance, but he still decides to work like he's underpaid. Coaches the baseball team at one of the local high schools nearby. I unfortunately get dragged to the games by my assistant, but fortunately they play pretty well. During those gaps in the summer, he either commentates at big sports games or passes by at the studio and chats with his old pals. Heh, and he says he 'retired' from all that hosting stuff. As much as I try not to care, gotta admit, knowing that his smiles are a lot more genuinely than the first time I met him makes me smile...

If you ask me, Envy's probably been the best off out of the five. Went 'ass kicked' to 'kicking ass' as a motorcycle racer. Even though he never got to host any part of The Ride, I guess he found its setting quite intriguing. From what I heard, everyone said he learned on the spot down there. Fixing busted up stairs and making missing steps out of thin air must've been great steps in engineering. Hell, he was the one who got the four out of the bottom in the first place! Somehow managed to fix the elevator with his limited experience.

Although Lust got his attention, he still strived for more. Actually helped me get outside my comfort box and green light the new shows, so I do owe a BIT of my success these days to him, I suppose. On the other hand, he's gone from playing journalist to playing detective. 'Conspiracy theorist' would be the better names, actually. You think that'd make him look like a total loonatic, but in a place like this, where seeing a ghost or werid being in the back alley is considered a normal Tuesday, you could see why they call him a detective...I find it funny that he STILL refuses to get sleep.

As for Gluttony... it's complicated. Had to make the not-so-hard decision to have him take time off the show after he attempted to murder his boyfriend and Wrath with a pen once more... take time off as in send him to a psych ward. I probably should've done that the first time, but I genuinely didn't expect him to try again. Didn't see him again until the early 2010s, late 2000s. He managed to keep everything that made him good and NOT do anything as bad as when he was in his pride! Hehe-heh...

Heh...

Or at least I wish he did.

Alas, I confess. Maybe he was in the right to decline my deals. Perhaps he knew of the hell demon that was brewing within him from that start and kept himself from the lime light just so it wouldn't take form. It is less my speculations and more my regrets. My regrets that spread for all of them. Even though the five are well off doesn't mean their flaws have disappeared. They are stuck with them for life, and someday, hopefully long into the future, their contracts will meet its full fruition as they become their flaws.

...Yes...now I understand these feelings towards them. It is because I have simply done the one thing you should never do to a human with full knowledge... yet still did it anyway..."

Don't worry !! the question doesn't bother me at all!

I’m not sure if anything specific triggered this feeling, it’s just something I think about a lot when I compare my art to others 😭Most of the artists I follow and admire have such a clear identity in their work. When I see their art all together it makes me think ''yeah this is definitely (artist's) trademark! it's so uniquely them!'' which sets off the feeling ''I would if I had money love to commission them if I could; because I like their unique style.''

But when I look at my own art as a whole... I struggle to see a distinct, unique identity in it :') I feel like I have so many different styles, but not enough pieces in any of them to call one my "main" style. It’s all over the place, and it makes me anxious wondering which of these styles my audience associates with me the most.

I read tags on my art before that were ''never knew you had such a side to your art. I thought it was all pink and peachy'' and sdjfdskj to clarify there's nothing wrong with this comment, it didn't offend me at all! at first I was like ''yay! I'm glad people like my dark/monochrome style too'' but it made me think 🤔 if I should just start making more of these... but what about the other styles? do people like them? will it get more engagement if it's a sketchy monochrome style or if it's a fully colored one? which one feels more emotive in a way that can resonate with the audience better? fully rendered, flat colors, black and white, sketch + colors, sketch and no colors?? I tried them all but I still can't figure it out. I don't know which one I like the best, or which one the public like the best. Sometimes a fully colored art which I spent days making will get very little engagement but a simple black and white sketch will do numbers. For this reason, I have a few WIPs that are still in sketch phase because I'm indecisive on how to proceed. Should I keep it simple like that? Should I clean the lineart and color it... what if it flops if I do it this way? you know?? Art style inconsistency is NOT a bad thing on it's own buuuuuuut I often think this wouldn't be a problem if I just had a consistent lineart style and coloring style, bc I could just do whatever I want and if it flops it just means the context of the art wasn't interesting enough to draw an audience. So I don't have to worry if the line/coloring style are influencing this. The indecision makes me exhausted and it often results in art block 😔 I wonder if this is just one of my very specific insecurities or if any other artist also feels this way.

I think, but am not sure, Jungkook wrote it for himself and then it got chosen for a Japanese drama OST so it got changed a little. But this was originally Jungkook's own ideas.

Is Holly still strong even though they are not physically capable of doing much? Like can they crack stone on accident or something breaks in their hand even though it wouldn't break normally?

The infection wounds have left them severely weakened, so no, they're nowhere near as physically strong as they used to. On top of that, their ability to focus soul was also affected, they can heal minor wounds but they wouldn't be able to grow back their arm or fix the lasting damage. I think describing what exactly that looks like could be interesting.

I mentioned the arm so I'll start with that. The missing arm has affected their sense of balance, and while the prosthetic arm helps a bit, they'd still struggle with wielding their nail, and can sometimes appear a bit "wobbly". Their large head, while surprisingly light for its size, makes it even more problematic - it very clearly weighs them down, which is why they look so hunched over; if they take off their prosthesis, they'll often lose balance and trip when standing up, not used to the sudden lack of weight.

In similar vein, their hands are very shaky, indicating some nerve damage to their body. Makes sense, seeing how it was ravaged by the infection to the point of seeping through the cracks. They were able to mostly recover, but some of the damage was permanent. Anxiety makes it even worse, to the point where if they're stressed out, they find it incredibly difficult to hold anything in their hands - even the prosthetic arm, though it's worth mentioning that it's generally a bit more stable than the other.

Their vision is also impaired, their right eye is missing, which means that their depth perception has suffered, and in general they see in washed out colors. Not completely color blind, mind you, and it's still possible that they saw the world like that before due to their void nature, but the infection would certainly make it even worse. They can distinguish between color, but they struggle with more subtle changes in shade or hue - for that reason they prefer to draw in monochrome with pencils or charcoal, though they'll occasionally color their drawings with dyes (or just crayons I suppose, pencils exist in the AU so I don't see why crayons wouldn't). Sometimes they mismatch colors, for example, making the sky a mint green instead of cyan (random thought, but since they presumably live on a different planet, perhaps their sky is in fact a different color due to the atmosphere?). The previously mentioned trembling hands make it a bit difficult, so their drawings have shaky lines, but they don't let that discourage them - besides, it has its charm, as Grimm would tell them, since next to FPK he was one of the main voices encouraging them to pick up drawing as a form of expression.

When it comes to physical strength, they're still what you'd consider pretty strong compared to an average bug. They wouldn't just trip and fall if you slightly pushed them, for example, and they can carry quite a lot of weight. It's very possible that the damage to their body, particularly the nerves, would make it somewhat difficult for them to realize they're perhaps grasping something too tightly, so they could break something fragile without meaning to. But it's a far cry from their physical strength from before the sealing, where they could crack stone and even break bones easily with just their hands. They're strong, but far weaker than before, especially with their disabilities. In some ways, they don't even mind it - they don't really need all that strength, and the last thing they'd want is to scare or intimidate others. It can't be denied that they struggle with their impairments, but with their family there to support them, they don't really complain. They've been through much worse, after all.

hellooo!! i love your art sm!! do you have any tips on how to study something effectively? 🤔 how do you approach studying something for your art?

hi anon!! thank you so much 🥹and that's a really good question!

there's a lot of things that can go into it, since it will depend on what kind of artist you are - but here are some general things i look out for.

make sure the study somehow ties back into your personal work. for example, while drawing a character i'll notice that i'm struggling with a certain hand pose, so afterwards i will look up the same or similiar hand refs and do a couple studies of them. i'd approach the study like this: draw a hand based on the reference, then see if there's anything off about it. draw it again with the new knowledge you've gained. try to be careful and put your lines down accurately, since it's less about speed but about understanding the structure. finally, apply it to your personal work. this method works best for me, since it stops me from thinking "i should learn anatomy" which isn't that helpful, but lets me pinpoint something specific i'd like to learn about.

ultimately, it's about keeping the practice sustainable. it can be easy to lose your way when remembering all the things you have yet to learn (perspective, figures, muscles, colors etc.) and you end up frantically studying and studying without a clear goal except "getting good". i know the sentence "you need to practice" gets thrown around a lot, and i get where it's coming from, but i don't find it very helpful. art can be anything you want it to be, and for me, having fun with it and finding joy is a huge part of it. so if you're studying and dreading every second of it, it'll be hard to keep it up in the long term and it might even sour your relationship with your art. so a couple things you could do to study, but also have fun: - figure out what kind of art you want to do. legit, write it down somewhere and think about it. do you prefer more graphic art? more painterly and textured? bold lines, thin lines, lineless? what kinds of artists do you admire (though loving a certain art style doesn't automatically mean you would enjoy their process either!) do you prefer monochrome or greyscale or color? - depending on what kind of art you want to create, choose what you want your studies to focus on. if you just wanna draw everyone in super big poofy dresses, you don't need anatomy nearly as much as someone who's into drawing buff ladies in tanktops! - instead of thinking "i will get good at perspective and then i get to have fun drawing my blorbos", just draw your blorbos in an environment with perspective! you don't need to separate your studies from your personal art at all - you can combine them, having fun and learning from them at the same time. if it doesn't work out the way you wanted it to, set it aside, let it marinate, and try again if you like.

and if something is really hard to do, it just means your brain is changing, growing, adapting, OVERCOMING!! and it'll be a little easier the next time around :]

I just reorganized my Victoria, Rachel, and Nathan Pinterest boards. links to each board, organization, and miscellaneous notes added under cut because I get antsy when I'm not dedicated to something silly. I will probably update this post if I make any major changes

soooo fun fact these started as a Victoria/Nathan shared board called "dead and buried" in June 2024 but I started to branch off into individual boards for individual characters with specific sections for relationships as I got farther into this hyperfixation!! We love virgoisms!!

each board is fairly self explanatory. the body of each board is dedicated to the character themselves and organized by color - Rachel's board begins in monochrome like Victoria and Nathan's, but her first in-color images are in shades of brown and her board ends in pinks/reds because we only know her as a dead person at first then she comes to life :) the sections are organized by quotes that almost always apply specifically to each section without referring to characters or relationships by name! "⌙" is used for the board sections to designate BAD relationships (eg Nathan and his dad and #that man with Nathan and Rachel), "⟡" designates better relationships (still not great but BETTER! eg kristine and Nathan, Rachel and Chloe, and Victoria and Nathan), while "┊" seperates out quote images because I think they look really clunky in the body of the board! however, each board begins with two quotes and some lyrics :)

Kind of a secret not sure if you could tell but Victoria is my favorite character. I really want to redo the red into orange into yellow into brown into sepia section because I think it's just a leeeedle messy but . It'll be done eventually. you'll notice a lot of Audrey Horne images here it's because I'm a fucking NERD. I need to stop adding images of Oxford shoes but I don't want to. the description quote is from episode 4, "I know how this art game has to be played. it's brutal" is also from episode 4, "like brother-sister or something" is said by Taylor in episode 4 too what the fuck, and "she already has everything she wants, doesn't she" is said or written by max during episode 1... aren't you glad I didn't say episode 4. I've been on the fence about naming the quote section either "et in arcadia ego" or "everywhere you go, there I am" but I like them both too much! by the way it's really hard to find images for the Victoria and her parents section (said about relationship that was never actually developed or mentioned or implied to be something worth analyzing up until one very specific line in episode 4)! I am the most proud of this board than I am any other board I've ever made!! it is my baby and I get really angry when I see images get taken down from it. I've wanted to put in a Rachel/Victoria section for a long time now but I think all the images I'd put in it would not be allowed on Pinterest OR SOMETHING

this is my most recent solo board - Rachel originally shared a board with Chloe called "fire walking" and just received her own board because she's been on my mind more lately :) I'll probably create a solo Chloe board one of these days but I think I only have like 40 images dedicated to her right now while Victoria/Rachel/Nathan all have well over 150+ 🥲 you can't blame me all she does is smoke weed have blue hair and die!! but!! Rachel's board is still a work in progress, I'm just trying very hard not to be generic.. I struggle so often with character boards and playlists where I don't want to have the same images and songs as all the other boards and playlists even if that sounds pretentious and silly! with Rachel's board, I tried to really focus on a ghost/deer/faceless/california motif and I hope it doesn't come across as too repetitive. "the last binder in the row reads 'Rachel'" is from the episode 1 script but it's empty right now because I'm scared, "...in the dark room" is from episode 3 and is sort of a cop out but fuck you (I almost named it dark room junkyard besties but absolutely not), "fire walking" is from before the storm and it is also the only acknowledgement I'll ever make of before the storm and I am also trying sofucking hard to find an amberprice quote I like from the first game so I can get rid of any mention of bts, and "you can't cover over that sunlight" is said by Samuel about Rachel's missing person posters in episode 1! fun fact: her board and Victoria's board have images from the same photoshoot but with different models!

I have nothing interesting to say honestly.when I made that post like "what color is Nathan's hair I can't look at him long enough without laughing" that was so serious I have no fucking clue what his hair color is so a lot of these images are redheads some are dark haired!! it;s like a rorschach test. the description quote is from the episode 2 Jefferson lecture before Kate kills herself, "I told him what he needed to hear" is from episode 5 - I was on the fence about making it something from the Jefferson sms message "you want me to treat you like an adult who can get things done on his own? impress me. I'd like nothing more than to be proud of you. I'm not there yet." because I think it characterizes their relationship super well but I couldn't choose a part I liked most, "you'll thank me someday" is from Sean's email in episode 4, "I miss you and your pictures" is from Kristine's email in episode 4 (I also have a private board dedicated to her but it's pretty barren so I doubt it'll ever see the light! it's called "back to the mangrove!") and "kill the rich kid" is said by Hayden in episode 1 :)

rambling about art struggles (sorry)

i think what's limiting me during drawing is that im thinking too much about line art / not knowing how to combine line art and color in a manner that im satisfied with

really sorry for how rambly this gets forgive me (this is also barely edited and im barely conscious)

95% of the art i made in my life has been done traditionally and in monochrome; usually i dont bother to ever color it bc i only had access to shitty colored pencils and everytime it would always fuck it up, constantly smudging into each other

4% of the time was like when i was in middle school and discovered how to fucking pirate paint tool sai and i blindly did whatever i could with a mouse (read: i gave myself carpel tunnel a lot lmao). i think i still have access to like 4 drawings i did thanks to google photos and the only ones i can really look back on positively were the line art ones and even then thats cause i used deviantart bases lol

heres the literal 1%: i did an art class back in late 2020 - early 2021 (can't remember what level it was? or what it specialized? it was the third art class i ever took. it might be intro to painting?) and i got to use acrylic paint for an assignment! i fucked up using it because i painted it with the goal of filling up the insides of the lineart instead of using the palette knife to create texture. my subject was an otter in the water (fun thing to say) and the assignment was to create some form of pop art, depict contrast w color (otters are brown i know, wanted to use orange highlights against the blue water) and to show i know how to depict varying textures (fur, liquid).

i did not know how to fucking do that!!! couldnt get any help either due to covid fucking happening and my poor ass's only connection to the internet was my fucking phone data and it was draining fast LMAO

the reason as to why i was so poor was because back in October 2019 my life fucking got flipped upside down and i had to give up a lot and had to desperately try to find a job while being a student. (will not go into specific detail due to me not wanting a pity party about it and it being too personal. im only going to say that caregiver burnout is fucking hell)

a prior assignment to that class had us practicing on depicting textures on some sort of paper (it was stiff yet bendable iirc) with a white and black color pencil (white for fur, black for eyes). i was watching aggretsuko at the time and fenneko is a fav of mine so i picked that type of fox as my subject. im really proud of the way i depicted the fur but fucking hated how i fucked up the eyes. was supposed to show the "glossiness" of it and i dont have a pet irl to reference so ahhhHHHH it ruined the piece for me. pretty sure i have it saved somewhere but since its not fandom related im hesitant to post it.

overall the class made me realise that regardless of skill i rlly like drawing textures and i dont really understand why? tried to reasoned it out to be that i just really like textured blankets and that theyre comforting. i purr like a fucking cat when i like hug one and i hate it

i feel like nowadays with how scatterbrained and stressed i am i visualize blobs of color in my mind instead of clear subjects with clear outlines. i feel like i need to embrace that side more (or at least try starting with that when doing digital art). maybe now i wont be so fucking stuck and pressing ctrl z all the time lol

Liliyan Danaus Info Dump Don't Mind Me (2/2) ;0

Making paintings is her favorite art form.

In different routes Liliyan would make a painting based off of the boy she ends up with, a kind of love language of hers. What makes it different from the other works she's done? These aren't just ordinary paintings, they are a collage of the feelings she wants to reciprocate to the person and a manifestation of all the memories she cherished. She'd overexert to capture those emotions. Rather than use art for the fame and all that she wants it to reach people and evoke emotion. Cove's would be ocean themed of course with soft seafoam and blues like their home. It would also be inspired by the dolphin wind chimes she got him and it would have this melting effect while there are also some things that hint at their childhood growing up together. To top it all off she'd let him paint an empty space on the canvas if he wanted to, kind of like a way to say "you'd always be a part of my world" or smth like that. Cove would absolutely bawl his eyes out because out of everybody apart from her family would know how much art meant to her.

Derek oh sweet Derek would have a painting that themes around trophies and rewards cuz he deserves it so much. Like Cove's there are some references to the times they spent together. It would have some gold but I also think of adding some warm and comforting colors to remind Derek that he doesn't have to try so hard with her and that he's enough. Oh yeah she'd definitely practice face paint for him and his bros.

Liliyan was hesitant to even make Baxter one when he was only looking for a fling for the summer and really she knew nothing about him which makes it really hard. And Liliyan takes relationships seriously (platonic or not). Slowly but surely she'd think of a way to make a colorful painting out of this monochrome muse. Just learning about Baxter and seeing the layers of her initial thoughts on him unfold to something entirely different brought a new perspective on how she makes these kinds of paintings. After he left, the painting was left as an unfinished pencil drawn sketch and she couldn't even give it to him.
