in junior year of highschool my art teacher would let our ceramics class play music of our choice off of her desktop. we usually used spotify or youtube but she did have one album downloaded on her computer. it was a halloween sound effects/ambience collection. i dont remember why she had it. there was a track on there called "burning screams" which was exactly what it sounds like. just a cacophony of screams alongside crackling fire. she only let us play it on very special occasions, and we would cheer and jump with joy every time. it was like a pizza party to us

pilot's been out for a bit now! thought it'd be fun to share my very first thumbnails for the whole pilot! since i gave myself only two months to board the whole thing, my thumbs more or less stayed the same as the final. the thumbs end early bc there was a point where i figured it was easier to just straight ahead board rather than plan. i did these all in about a day and a half and was also kinda writing as i went

To that anon who wanted more art of Siffrin with his hat off, this is for you. (Also because I couldn't think of anything else to draw.) Hope you don't mind I hit them with the semi-realism beam again because I'm still working on refining my default art style. :P

Close up, rambling, and the brushes I used under the cut

This is one of those drawings I gradually gained more and more beef towards the longer I worked on it, lmao. Sometimes that's just how it goes.

Some self-critique is I wish I angled Odile's arm more forward, so that you could see more of it to make the hair-tousling more obvious. It only started to bother me after it was far too late to change it. Also, as is tradition any time I draw backgrounds, don't look at it too hard, LOL. It would have gone much better if I, like, looked up any references at all, but I was lazy and just wanted to Bob Ross some trees from imagination. Also ough, trying to paint in only values and keep contrast against characters who are also only-values is hard.

I have more various nitpicks, but I don't want to drag this piece too hard, ahaha. (There's also some details that I straight-up forgot.)

Something I've been beating my perfectionism with a stick about is that not everything has to be a masterpiece. Sometimes you can just experiment, notice what did and didn't work, and move forward with that knowledge. Quantity over quality can help, because every piece is a stepping stone of improvement.

Speaking of, I'm happy with how I've improved drawing hair! Also, while shading, I tried to avoid erasing as much as possible. Usually, I push and pull the edges of shadows with brush and eraser to get them into the right place, but here I planned my strokes better so I didn't have to. It helps preserve the brush texture a lot better and I like how it came out. I also think I did well on the finer details, like Odile's glasses & book and Siffrin's silver pins.
