I love how I can go from almost putting a book down to having to physically restrain myself from spoiling said book because I HAVE to know if my theory is right because this is the absolute best thing I have read why would I think of putting this down???

Six Feet Under - Nightmares of the Decomposed
I wrote a full-length review of this disaster of an album earlier in the month, and yeah, wow. Between the phoned-in performances from the instrumentalists who have proven themselves far above this joke of a band and the half-assed production this would have been a pretty crappy album even without Chris Barnes’ milk-aged vocals. But he’s here, and he’s managed to actually get worse too, gasping his way through the whole album and littering it with these ludicrous “high” squeals that would make Smeagol sound like a more competent death metal vocalist. It’s the worst thing I’ve heard all year, and what’s worse, I don’t think Six Feet Under is stopping.
1/10
With that out of the way, let’s cleanse the pallet right away with some really good shit.
Greg Puciato - Child Soldier: Creator of God
Ever reliable in his artistically integrity, explosive former Dillinger Escape Plan frontman, Greg Puciato, has been pretty sonically and artistically adventurous since the honorable dissolution of the iconic mathcore outfit, his most notable music project being the ethereal, synth-heavy The Black Queen. This year, however, Puciato has gone fully solo for a full-length project, and something told me to get ready for a wild ride, and boy was I right on that hunch. Borne out of an exponentiated process of songwriting that produced songs Puciato deemed unfitting for any of his current projects, what was planned as a small release to ship these songs out of the writing room eventually spiraled into a full-blown debut solo album clocking in at over an hour. A lot of solo projects play like clearly indulgent amateur hour sessions from an artist whose ego has been boosted pretty well from significant success from their main project, leading them to overconfidently try their hand at music they have no business trying it at. And it’s often approached under the understanding that it is a victory lap, more or less, and a satisfaction of creative impulses for the sake of it. Sometimes the resultant material is clearly inspired and showcases a side of an artist that certainly deserves some spotlight. Other times it feels like being trapped in an awkward situation with an acquaintance where they just show you all their newest pedals and production software and you’re just stuck there watching them fiddle around while you nod along and offer the occasional “wow, that’s pretty crazy” every now and then while they don’t pick up on the obvious cues that you are just waiting for them to finish playing with their toys. While Puciato was open about this album being borne from the very creatively borderless mindset that so often damns solo projects, Child Soldier: Creator of God is an actual realization of the type of grand, genre-spanning album that so many solo artists envision themselves making and set out to create, and it’s hardly a whimsical, amateurish crack at the styles within either. Puciato’s foray into sludge metal, industrial rock, harsh noise, darkwave, synthwave, and shoegaze, (1) makes for a hell of a dynamic and exciting track list, and (2) shows a much deeper than average respect for and relationship with the styles being played here. This isn’t some frontman thinking his charisma can carry him through a whole rap solo album; this is a well-rounded artist (also a hell of a frontman, no denying that) giving the most comprehensive look yet into his creative mind. The album leaps around in patches of different styles, strung together mostly by ambient connective tissue of various types, all with a great attention to detail paid to both texture and progression. We get early patches of smooth ambiance, but also aggressive industrial and sludge metal, eventually moving to more soothing and meditative synthy stuff around the middle, finishing with some serene, Have a Nice Life-esque shoegaze. But really there’s no way to sum up this album stylistically without breaking down every single song on here, and that would just ruin the fun and the experience. You really just have to experience it for yourself.
9/10
DevilDriver - Dealing with Demons I
Embarking on a conceptual double-album, Dez Fafara and DevilDriver’s first installment in the pair is a scoop of the, indeed, slightly above average, but unfortunately still plain and predictable modern groove metal they always offer up. I’ll give the band credit for keeping the pace up and clearly putting substantial energy into the performances on this album, while also trying to squeeze in a few shake-ups to their sound, like the clear Gojira-inspired riffage on the opening track. The album loses steam, unfortunately, as its punches lose their impact as it goes on.
6/10
Anaal Nathrakh - Endarkenment
While certainly cultivating a unique sound, Anaal Nathrakh’s unholy fusion of nasty modern blackened grindcore with sweeter metalcore and melodic death metal elements has its mixed results. And while that might at first sound like a relatively critical assessment of the Brits’ eleventh album, I’d say that there is actually a lot to enjoy and take in for at least the interesting mix of styles, most of which are hits rather than misses as well.
7/10
Enslaved - Utgard
Having been a fan of a good amount of their recent output, especially 2015’s In Times, I came out of Utgard moderately disappointed with how infrequently Enslaved galvanized their potent brand of Viking folky, progressive black metal effectively; the few moments the band do channel their strengths cohesively and purposefully left me wanting more rather than savoring those moments.
6/10
In Cauda Venenum - G.O.H.E.
It’s hard to, and indeed seems kind of in just to, sum up a heaping prog metal serving like G.O.H.E., comprised of two 22-minute halves, in a capsule review, but that is kind of the format my current busy circumstances have forced me into. French outfit In Cauda Venenum made a self-titled debut in similar two-long-track fashion back in 2015, and the band’s gothic and somewhat theatrical brand of atmospheric post-black-metal is continued on their sophomore effort here, drawing the obvious comparisons to Opeth and Katatonia, as well as Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Numenorean, and Sólstafir, and apart from the more frequent sample usage and extra drawn-out songs, there really isn’t that much to differentiate In Cauda Venenum stylistically. The band’s second album, unfortunately, resembles so many others in the field with big aspirations and the same inadequate means of getting there.
5/10
Apparition - Granular Transformation
A much more bite-sized early two-track offering, Apparition’s debut EP offers a more promising glimpse into a heady, atmospheric, yet still visceral manipulation of modern death metal that I would be curious to hear in a more long-form format. In a genre as extreme as death metal in recent years has been, finding artists effective at working with negative space can be difficult, but the two songs on Granular Transformation showcase a formidable dexterity from Apparition that I think can take them places.
6/10
Molasses - Through the Hollow
While indeed marred by some rough performances on songs with sometimes more desert to cross than water to make it there, there’s an undeniable occult hypnotism about the Dio-era-esque doom metal hollow that Molasses ritualize their way through.
7/10
Death Angel - Under Pressure
While certainly an odd choice on the surface, Death Angel’s acoustic EP and cover of the famous Queen song actually comes out pretty alright. The acoustic version of Act III’s “A Room with a View” comes off with the energy of something like Rush whenever they went acoustic, and the original acoustic cut, “Faded Remains” isn’t too bad either. The acoustic format did not, however, mask the drabness of “Revelation Song” from last year’s overall disappointment, Humanicide.
6/10
Necrophobic - Dawn of the Damned
The Swedes’ melodic brand of blackened death metal is nothing if not thorough on the quintet’s ninth full-length, Dawn of the Damned, covering all the ground that their fans expect their style to cover and doing so with more compositional and performative stamina than their average contemporary. While the band’s broader compositional approach is akin to the beating of a dead horse, I can’t deny it produces some tasty motifs in the process.
7/10
Bloodbather - Silence
After coming onto the blossoming metallic hardcore scene in 2018 with a standard, but potent enough 14-minute EP, Pressure, Bloodbather are back with another 14 minutes of similar, yet less promising material, doing little to set themselves apart from or on the same level of the likes of Jesus Piece, Vein, Knocked Loose, or Harm’s Way.
5/10
Infera Bruo - Rites of the Nameless
The Bostonians’ fourth full-length is, at the very least, a rather well-executed forty minutes of modern black metal a la Craft or Watain, but beneath the seams the band’s progressive tendencies twist what would otherwise be a fresh, but standard, slab of black metal into a more head-turning offering of the usual shrieks and blast beats.
7/10
Touché Amoré - Lament
While somewhat shaky in their compositional exploration in their fifth LP, the firmness of their emotive post-hardcore foundation allows for Touché Amoré to build upwards relatively steadily without losing that raw vulnerability that has made them so captivating to begin with.
7/10
Gargoyl - Gargoyl
This is the self-titled debut from Bostonian four-piece Gargoyl; a novel blend of dirty nineties grunge and gothic prog metal, Gargoyl come through with one of the more impressive genre fusions of the year, meeting the lofty sufficiency for dexterity with excessive vocal harmonies in a manner so uncanny that would make habe to Layne Stayley proud. While there is the expected room for improvement on the compositional end that many debut projects come with, Gargoyl have laid the groundwork for themselves fantastically and started off on a good foot.
7/10
Crippled Black Phoenix - Ellengæst
Through creative gothic flair and full-bodied guest vocal contributions that bolster the somber atmosphere beyond the typical post-metal album, the UK band’s most recent offering of “endtime ballads”, despite its few low points that undo its otherwise immersive atmosphere, serves as one of the more engaging releases under the broader post-metal umbrella of the past year.
7/10
Wayfarer - A Romance with Violence
The Denver-based quartet follow up 2018’s strong emotive case for the potential for evoking cathartic power of the atmospheric black metal which has so saturated the American scene to the point of numbness, their Americana-tinged third LP, World’s Blood, unfortunately, with a fourth LP whose compositional homogeneity and mere few intermittent bursts of enthralling atmospheric instrumentation more represent, rather than advocate the merit of, the saturation of the American atmospheric black metal scene.
6/10
Armored Saint - Punching the Sky
Though I think the structural homogeneity and John Bush’s similarly limited vocal delivery holds it back, with crunchy bangers like “Do Wrong to None” and “My Jurisdiction” alongside more tempered tracks the clearly grunge-influenced “Lone Wolf”, Bush and company provide a relatively stylistically diverse traditional heavy metal album for an age that could use more contemporary representation of classic styles (beyond the entire stoner metal genre LARPing as Black Sabbath too).
7/10
Spirit Adrift - Enlightened in Eternity
But it's not just the old guard representing their era of classic heavy metal robustly; a year and a half after their energetically melodic third album, Divided by Darkness, which took a triumphant melodic approach to classic heavy metal and doom metal similar to that of Khemmis on their excellent third album, Spirit Adrift ease up a bit on the hyper-soulful approach to guitar melody that had led me (and others I'm sure) to draw the comparison to Khemmis, and instead dive deeper into the headspace of the genre's earliest progenitors to achieve that unabashedly glorious rallying cry that is evoked by the very front cover of Enlightened in Eternity. While I am personally pretty partial to the very vulnerable and heartfelt melodic approach that characterized Divided by Darkness, the effectiveness with which Spirit Adrift are able to wield the sometimes Maiden-esque, sometimes Testament-esque sounds of the 80’s on this album is undeniably impressive.
8/10
Fever 333 - Wrong Generation
Providing the correction to this generation’s answer to Rage Against the Machine (after Prophets of Rage’s insufficient attempted revival) Fever 333 follow up last year’s debut of heavy, fired-up and modern take on rapcore with another 14 minutes of righteous anti-racist hardcore anger that’s attuned to the issues to a level that I wish more artists would at least express in their art. While the EP is 18 minutes long, the last two songs, “The Last Time” and “Supremacy”, don’t match the sonic energy of the first six tracks. The somber piano-led snippet-length ballad, “The Last Time”, should have been the conclusion of the album, but the closing track, “Supremacy”, while as conscious as the tracks before it, is basically a late-stage formulaic Linkin Park track that flatters neither of the two bands. Despite botching the landing though, Wrong Generation is a ripping batch of songs that well represent the current unrest and provide a positive hypothetical idea of what it might be like if Rage Against the Machine were in their prime and active today.
7/10
Mörk Gryning - Hinsides Vrede
The Swedes return from their 15-year disillusioned absence from the studio with a concise and clearly renewed enthusiasm for the energetic black metal that they put forth on Hinsides Vrede. Dynamically bolstered by folk-metal compositional tendencies and more than a dash of that famed Gothenburg melodicism (I know they’re from Stockholm and in fact their melodic approach often does heaven to that of their close neighbors from Uppsala, Watain), Mörk Gryning’s seamless return to music finds them jumping into the modern black metal scene’s advanced compositional rubric with relative ease.
7/10
Zeal & Ardor - Wake of a Nation
Having covered their output since their debut and being a big fan of Manuel Gagneux’ project, it pains me to say, especially given the noble pretext and occasional momentary flashes of sobering messaging, that this six-song mini release really doesn’t capture the unique sonic pallet that has made Zeal & Ardor such an interesting act to listen to for the past few years in the most flattering light. The title track is possibly the least of the offenders here, but all the songs here function by taking a little snippet of sound that samples Zeal & Ardor’s broader stylistic range, and drawing it out across these short, but all too minimally composed tracks in such a way that they lose their momentum very quickly. Like I said, I wholeheartedly appreciate, sympathize with, and support what Manuel Gagneux is doing to lend his band’s platform to the addressing of the dire issue of today’s racism through musical means with this project, and when its social motivation is at the forefront, it’s at its most potent, but musically, unfortunately, it’s just desperately underwritten in a way that doesn’t fairly represent how accomplished Zeal & Ardor really are with their sound.
5/10
Sevendust - Blood & Stone
The flashes of crushing grooves reminiscent of their earlier work on Blood & Stone that highlight how well Sevendust can harness nu/alternative metal to execute pummeling attacks with the right crunchy guitar tone, unfortunately, don’t come frequently enough on their twelfth LP to mirage the exhaustion that has come of the band’s writing process after such frequent, unrelenting output and the all too apparent desperate need for a recalibrating, refreshing break, which they certainly deserve for their tenacity.
5/10
Undeath - Lesions of a Different Kind
In one of those cases where the ridiculously gratuitous album cover actually represents the album’s sound quite well, Rochester, New York five-piece, Undeath mince neither words nor sounds on their debut LP in their 100% upfront, no-nonsense, and wonderfully nasty delivery of death metal. Eschewing even the slightest sense of snobbery or pretense for aimless ambition, the band simply compile the genre’s tried and true elements of bellowing growls, filthy riffs, mean-ass down-tuned chugging, and blood-pumping double-bass with blast beats into an addictive slab of raw, uncured death metal that serves as a testament to the merit of not overthinking shit.
8/10
Griffon - Ὸ Θεός Ὸ Βασιλεύς
On their sophomore LP, Parisian quintet Griffon channel the world innovative ethos that has become rather prominent in their scene into a somewhat short, but definitely sweet offering of modestly ambitious black metal that captures much more effectively than most albums of similar style and lesser imagination, the divine grandeur that the genre so often tries and fails to embody.
8/10
Bring Me the Horizon - Post-Human: Survival Horror
After taking the hard left into current pop music trends very transparently on their controversial, which was at least partially intentional on their part, and ultimately really patchy, but not wholly awful, 2019 album, amo, Oli Sykes and co. walk it back substantially for this smaller release here, back to That's the Spirit, even Sempiternal, a prospect that might get a lot of the band's more long-time, metalcore-centric fans excited, but I would suggest those fans temper their expectations of Post-Human: Survival Horror. The band reunite with the anthemic metalcore/deathcore that put them on the map for a good chunk of this album, and the intro track, "Dear Diary,", might even give some false hope of the prodigal sons returning home. But songs like the cookie-cutter single, "Teardrops", provide strong evidence that, while the band have re-embraced their old aesthetic, they have not kicked the pop vocal or compositional habits. And the project really does run out of energy in its final third because of this compositional homogeneity. I do want to highlight the song, "Kingslayer", which features a very in-form Babymetal (I loved their album last year), because their fun, not-so-serious approach to the crossing of J-pop and metal music in their feature on this track among the other songs around it provides a contrast to the more formulaic, disinterested radio pop swagger that Bring Me the Horizon have been trying to jam into their sound that could perhaps inform Bring Me the Horizon's artistic approach to integrating pop music if they really are so hellbent on doing so. Ultimately though, as much as they want to move into newer territory, this trajectory-revising release shows just how much more solid Bring Me the Horizon are in their metalcore territory than they were on amo. It had its predictable hiccups, but this thing wasn't too bad.
7/10
Pallbearer - Forgotten Days
With the slow, sludgy, down-tuned riffing of the menacing opening title track and the similar chug of “Vengeance & Ruination” being the sole exceptions, the remainder of Pallbearer’s fouth full-length largely sees them operating in the same niche they have in their three previous albums. And while this could invoke accusations of playing it safe, the brimming heartfelt sorrow and resistance to succumbing to despair across Forgotten Days is enough to wave that away, as Pallbearer showcase just how emotive doom metal can be.
8/10
Bleeding Out - Lifelong Death Fantasy
The very new act and fresh Profound Lore signing, Bleeding Out, certainly display more dynamic capability than your average local grindcore scene’s biggest names here on their 18-minute debut for the label, but as of now it is still just a glimpse of potential for more effective future implementation. It’s a good start, though, and I’ll be looking forward to a more long-form project from these guys.
6/10
Evildead - United States of Anarchy
Every year we get the resurrection of some long-inactive old-school band who seem to have found that missing spark at last; we’ve seen the return of smaller bands to the studio like Angel Witch or Sorcerer and long-awaited revivals of iconic acts like Possessed. This year, Los Angeles’ Evildead has seen fit to make their commentary on the massive ongoing sociopolitical upheaval. Despite my love for the 80’s thrash scene they were born out of, the combination of the utterly lame band name, logo, and covers for either their ‘89 or ‘91 albums never really made me want to check them out, but seeing the horridly cheesy and incoherent cover of United States of Anarchy (I mean how much more on-the-nose can you get), my morbid curiosity got the best of me. Maybe I’d be wrong to have judged them by their cover, plenty of my favorite 80’s albums have particularly goofy cover art. So what do we get from Evildead in 2020 with this fucking album? Well, it’s not as poorly performed as the past few Anvil albums I’ve had to review have been, but Jesus the lyricism is similarly cheesy 5th-grade-level stuff and smacks of silly political incoherence that essentially boils down to “enlightened centrism” with mix of that good ol’ Illuminati-conspiracy-theory belief that no political thrash album is apparently complete without. I mean there’s just basic acknowledgment of the prominent problems of the day and the fact that both major political parties are bad and that corruption is rampant all throughout DC, but Evildead not only barely scratch the surface, they apply the same level cynicism to the “both sides” they criticize with no substantiation to their criticism despite that mindset being a big reason for our being where we are right now, mixed in with the occasional conspiracy-paranoia about the shadowy underworld running everything, so no real solutions or even proper addressing of these problems. Like, the same level of criticism is levied at right-wingers and communists, like communists are at all why this country has gone to shit. And the generic Anthrax/Megadeth type of thrash instrumentation, while rumbly and mixed well to highlight its bass heaviness, doesn’t exactly make it easy to get past the commentary deficiencies on here.
4/10
Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - May Our Chambers Be Full
Rounding off their year (at least I think), with a long-teased collaboration with Emma Ruth Rundle, Thou finally present their massive sludge-doom sound in a much more flattering light than the previous cover albums this year did. Thou's original material continues to highlight just why their relatively stiff sound is much more cut out for that, original material, than for trying to bend beyond its flexibility to tribute grunge songs. And while Thou being back in their more effective department, Emma Ruth Rundle's contributions, beyond just her gorgeous and ethereally haunting vocals, to the album's atmosphere, dynamic, and structuring really take the collaboration to the next level. Not to say that Thou are completely overshadowed and relegated to the background on this record or that they don't contribute to a fair share of the legwork here; the workload is shared pretty equally, and both collaborators have their moments of prominence, but Emma Ruth Rundle's ever-present gothic/folky influence really directs the music in a way that plays to Thou's strengths in a way I'm not sure they would have been able to on their own. It's great work from both of them, and I'd be eager to hear Thou find more collaborations like this in the future that push them into doing more interesting things with their crushing doom sound, as opposed to the rather tepid collaborations with The Body.
8/10
Auðn - Vökudraumsins Fangi
Sadly, three albums in, Auðn have only barely exceeded the bare minimum for naturalistic atmospheric black metal, with no signs of significant improvement to be found. The Icelandic band earn points for their earnest delivery, but they never seem to fully make it out of the rut that the genre’s many contemporary acts have dug.
5/10
Botanist - Photosynthesis
The black metal traditionalists might have had to accept that the floodgates to bright ambience and serene shoegaze in the genre have been opened and that there's no going back now, but even as an avid Deafheaven fan, I'm sometimes momentarily surprised at just how heavenly some black metal has gotten lately, and this new album from Botanist is one of those albums. And while it sometimes slips into some of the current wave's typical ruts, the sheer blindingly illuminating aura of this album when it reaches those high points (and it does so frequently) is enough to pull it out from those gutters and high into the cosmos. Yeah, another splendid offering of nature worship from Botanist.
8/10
Mr. Bungle - The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo
Making their return after over a decade, Mike Patton recruits both Dave Lombardo and Scott Ian for the long-awaited fourth Mr. Bungle album, which is titled in homage to the first Mr. Bungle demo which it is comprised largely of much clearer re-recordings of. Ever impressive, Mike Patton balances aggression and eccentricity like a tightrope walker on this project too, while his bandmates do the same with thrash metal’s natural adrenaline rush while pushing the genre into new compositional and stylistic territory without sacrificing that crucial whiplash. It’s a great time, and definitely one of the year’s best thrash albums.
8/10
Carcass - Despicable
While they've been much less prolific since their reboot than they were prior, Liverpool's melodic death metal pioneers simply continue to demonstrate their excellence in this seemingly effortless four-track appetizer to next year's Torn Arteries. Anyone familiar with the band's brutal form of melodic death metal will certainly be pleased with the four quite sufficiently pulverizing cuts here; those who may only be familiar with some of the band's many less muscular imitators might be surprised, and pleasantly so, with the Englanders' ability to lay on the infectious guitar melody without sacrificing an ounce of force.

You have 10 missed calls from Pabo ❤
My heart dropped as I rummaged through this tiny, tiny purse that was just an accessory basically. After moments of looking and looking, and coming across with nothing, it was decided. I groaned in utter annoyance and almost ripped my scalp off if it wasn't for the fact I spent hours curling my hair to perfection.
I caNNOT BELIEVE I left my phone at home.
I whine and stomped my feet lightly, not wanting to disturb the driver of the taxi I was in. He didn't deserve that.
I huffed and crossed my arms. Oh well.
This was it, and at least I had my keys and wallet with me. Nothing was going to ruin this.
I wonder if Nari was already there.
I paid the driver once I got to my destination and went my way, inside the exclusive party. I turned to tell the bouncer my name but oddly enough, he spared me no look and simply moved aside and let me in. I... huh, thoughtful?
I blinked rapidly as I walked in the place.
Wait... do you know what that means?
It means I, me, ME, I have an effect on people. But why? It's neve-- wait, is it because-- because of this dress.
My heart pounded in my chest as I stalked down the hallway, making it into the dim, loud, smoky, dizzying place that made my stomach churn and my hands sweat.
Where is Nari?
I chewed the inside of my lower lip and watched where I was going. I went to the sides, avoiding the crowd at all costs, hearing a few heys and some how are you beautiful on the side, making me want to gag though my lips haven't even touched alcohol yet.
Suddenly, a very distinct shriek pierced my ears and I looked up to find the source. And there Nari was with a big grin, waving her hands at me as if I was some sort of celebrity.
"Oh my gosh!" she gasped, shimmying through the crowd. "You bought really did buy the dress!"
I chuckled nervously and nodded. I can't tell her about Jackson.
"Yeah. I... I thought it was about time, y'know, in this long time coming."
"Damn straight, jagiya!" she eeked in approval. "Oh when Jaebum sees you, he's gonna--" she cut herself off and then slapped my arm. I whined at the random action.
"What the h--"
"Jinyoung has been calling me for hours! Why haven't you answered his calls?! Is it because he doesn't want you to go to your ex's party."
My brows quirked, "Jinyoung's been calling me?"
Nari scoffed, and seemed that sh was about to attack me, but then she realized something. "Don't tell me, you forgot your phone again, didn't you?"
I rolled my eyes, "No shit Sherlock! Text Jinyoung and tell him I'm fine, ho."
She rolled her eyes, "You do it!"
"Nari! Just tell him this: she's with me, and is fine."
My best friend gave a prolonged groan and pulled her phone out. "Get me a drink then, ho. Reception is bad by the bar for some reason."
I chuckled and nodded, "Fine. Wait for me here then. I'm not particularly fond of hanging around the bar."
Nari nodded. I moved past her and went through the sea of people, gritting my teeth whenever sweat skin made contact with mine. I shuddered at the revolting atmosphere around me that gave me nothing but revolting sensations. Once I was spat out of the crowd that shoved itself against me, I huffed in both relief and frustration, gripping my glittering dress and strutting to the bar. The bartender gave a smile and nodded, immediately asking, "What can I get you?
I pursed my lips, "The sweetest cocktail you have, please."
"I'll make it sweeter for you." the bartender winks, making my eyebrows raise and my head to pull back. I brushed my sweaty nape and chuckled as the man behind the bar got to preparing my drink.
I laughed quietly by myself as I looked around the place.
JB really knows where the hottest places are at. He'll be a great businessman.
"Hey."
I looked over my shoulder, to where the voice came and looked at the man with widening eyes. His hair grew longer since the last time we met, but it still suited him, because, well, he was him.
"It must be your first time here," he spoke while his pointer and middle finger flattened my hair. It was a habit of his. He took a sip of the drink he had in hand then continued, "And the world must be good to me because it's my birthday."
I looked at him, astonished, in pure and utter disbelief, and chuckled loudly, "Don't you know who I am?"
The man seemed to take the questioning statement as a challenge. He leaned him, smelling his cologne and subtly of alcohol. "I could... know you real good."
I my mind went spinning and I just had to turn away.
"Don't you have a girlfriend?" I snipped, whipping my head back to him.
His face remained playful, but I saw how slightly his eyes dropped. "No," he replied the same way he did the first time I asked him a similar question.
"No?" I scoffed out a chuckle, "Are you sure? Isn't her name Jisoo or something."
It was then he visibly showed tension.
I felt tears well in my eyes but I blinked them away. I turned away and rubbed my nape, digging my fingers into roots of my hair. "I can't believe you're drunk already. Has your tolerance went down since last year?"
"What are you talking about?"
"What?" I repeated as I looked at him, "Do you really not remember me, Bum-ie oppa?"
Just then the bartender came back with my order and I took it without hesitation. The man before me was struck by lightning or realization. I took a sip of the drink in my hand and then clicked it against his, "Happy birthday, cheater. Good to know you want back what you've broken."
I turned away from him and swayed my hips away from the imbecile. Apparently though, he wasn't embarrassed enough by our encounter and called my name, pulling me by my arm. I looked at him over my shoulder and he dared to push my hair back behind my ear. He spoke my name again and so I reciprocated.
"Jaebum." I spoke with venom.
"Wh-wait. Ya... You look amazing."
I scoffed and roughly pulled my arm out of his grip, "I've always looked amazing, you bastard." I turned around and downed the drink in one go as I walked back into the sea of people.
"Ya! Where's my drink?" Nari asked as I gave her the empty glass. I saw a bunch of frat boys drinking soju and so I pushed my best friend aside and went to them.
"Hey, boys. Can I have some soju?"
They all turned to me and nodded profusely. I then took their bottle and drank it all the way back to Nari. She looked bewildered, mortified at me and my actions. "YA! WHAT THE HELL?"
"Jaebum-ah."
Nari pulled her head back, "Ya! I'm not your cheating ex-" "I saw him." I spoke, out of breath and hot blooded.
"You did?" Nari spoke in surprise and concern.
"Yeah and he thought I was someone else and hit on me!"
"HE HIT ON YOU! WAAHHH WHAT A DOG--" "I'm so pretty he hit on me!"
Nari held back her laughter as I took her hand, "Ya... I need you to take thousands of hot pictures on me okay. I have to show someone."
She chuckled but pulled her phone out, nevertheless. "If that someone is Jaebum, count me in."
"NOOOOO!" I scoffed, "it's Jackson!"
Nari stilled, "who's Jackson?"
"He's my sugar daddy! Ya, don't you know I'm so pretty he asked me to go out on a date with him and pay me a million for it."
The woman threw her head back in laughter.
"YA! I'M NOT LYING!"
"Okay, jagiya. I believe you." Nari breathed out, "Waaah, I can't believe you're already that drunk."
Nari took my pictures and filmed me while I danced and drank, and danced, and drank, and drank again, and again, and I think I seduced Jaebum or something, because the same Nari was pulling me away for something.
I don't know what.
"Here," I was handed to someone like a package.
"She drank a one-fourth bottle of soju, two cocktails and a bunch of half finished drinks from strangers."
I looked at the man I was leaned up against and caressed his cheek, "You're pretty."
He looked down on me with raised eyebrows, "and you smell horrible."
"Ya, Jinyoung-ah, the correct response is to say you're prettier."
He rolled his eyes and grabbed my wrists, spinning around and carrying me behind his back. I grunt and hit my nose of his head, causing both of us to grunt.
Nari whined, "Just let her die, honestly."
"You read my mind." the man I was propped on growled.
"URSA MAJOR IS JUST A HOAX! I'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE."
"You can't tell the constellations apart for the life you," Jinyoung noted, adjusting his drip on me.
"You can still dump her body in a dumpster, Jinyoung." Nari offered.
He sighed, "Nah, she's not worth potentially getting caught and sent to jail for."
Jinyoung started walking off and Nari waved goodbye before heading back in. The bouncer however did not let her enter, which made her shout at him in annoyance.
"Yaaaa, stoooop! I still have to take pictures for Jackson!"
"Who's he?"
"He's the one who bought me the dress."
"Ah, you're sugar daddy? Nari sent you your photos for him." Jinyoung spoke as he put me into the front seat of some car.
"How do you know? Did you steal my phone?"
Jinyoung went into the front seat and opened the engine. He chuckled and drove his car back, "She called me, and told me."
"Why would she tell you?"
"Because I called her, knowing you."
"Knowing me?"
Jinyoung drove forward and glance at me quickly, "Knowing how you get around Jaebum."
"Ew! Don't talk about him!"
Jinyoung chuckled softly.
"Nari didn't call you to pick me up though."
"What?"
"She was too busy taking pictures of me. You came here to kidnap me." I spoke, crossing my arms.
Jinyoung pursed his lips as I continued, "I won't give you my heart."
There was silence. The driver gripped the steering wheel. "You can't sell any of my organs to the black market."
Jinyoung gave a breath. His eyes crinkled. "Ya... no one would want any of your organs. You're too unhealthy. Mine on the other hand, would cost billions." The man struck a pose and I hissed between my teeth.
"Who is Jackson though?" a long minute of silence was broken by that sentence. I huffed at the question asked by the person beside me, "I told you, he's my sugar daddy. He's gonna make me rich."
Jinyoung pursed his lips, "Are you seeing him?"
"I'm seeing you, pabo."
There was nothing but silence at this point. "Sure, let's see each other then." Jinyoung spoke after a while, deciding for himself.
I shrugged, "Sure."

Fadderuka
Omg this week has been so exhausting!!!
My friends and I decided to be "fadder" thid year which is like being a mentor(?) to the new students of the career you're doing sort of. You explained to the new students how the career is, about the subjects, about you know the campus, places, etc. Plus you go out with them and party and well it's a way the university makes sure the new students feel comfortable around the first days of uni and I mean I guess here in Norway everyone is always trying to not leave alone anyone(?) So...by that way you foe sure have someone at uni you can be friends with(?) Idk sounds childlish, like you're an adult I don't need to tell you "go make friends" but it's actually really useful and no one is against that, somehow it helps to socialize between each others so yeah...
Well I don't regret to have had this exhausting week but omg I just really need to sleep like for 10 years.
So I know I jave to talk about what happened this summer and stuff but now tht this is more recent and I remember everything perfectly I'm going to talk about it. (And someday I'll talk about the last months)
So we started with Monday.
Monday was exhausting since the beginning, we had to wake up really early because we had to be at uni at 9 because we hade a breakfast of all the "fadder" group. In the group there was Lucas, Luisa, Alejandra, Elena (which is more friend of Lucas than mine), Thomas an Birk (also friends of Lucas, both of them are Norwegians but they speak really nice Spanish a d they're really friendly) and also Herman (a Norwegian boy which has a raspy voice that you can't understand what he's saying neither in Norwegian nor Spanish, but anyway...)
So we went to this breakfast, and there I met a boy who was my age and he's from Spain, his name is Alvaro and I found out he's going to be a teacher this year, I mean he will help the real teachers and stuff bt yeah...like he was doing some practices. He's actually fun and really open.
Then we went to welcomed the new students, we were in this big room and people started to come, at one moment I decided to be social and sat in a table with some new students and introduced myself. I started talking in Norwegian but then a girl said "sorry you have to talk in Spanish or English because there's this boy who can't Norwegian" and I was like "nice..." But yeah at the beginning was hard, they were quiet, shy, no one wanted to talk amd I was like "come on, this is harder for me than for you..." But anyway, I somehow made them talk and socialize a little bit, the sad and funny thing is that I don't remember the names of most of the people (specially girls). There we had also a little breakfast too with them, the professors and the consultant of the Spanish studies gave their speeches and we also introduced to them as the fadder group with who they will be hanging out these days.
After that we made a few questions about what they expect of this course, what are they afraid of and stuff like that. Then, we went around the campus and showed them the common places and after that we decided to do a game to know each other better.
Omg and there was this guy, his name is Kjetil, his my age, he's GORGEOUS. Like I don't know how but since the first minute I just fell for him, everyone fell okay? Like HOW WOULDN'T YOU? What a boy. But on this game of knowing each other where you asked "who is from Norway? Who is not? Who has traveled to Spain or Latin America? Blablabla on the question of "who has gf/bf?" Kjetil stood up and all of us where "shit." DAMN YOU. I mean I understand a boy like this if he's not in a relationship he would be totally gay. For sure.
Anyways, back to the game, we were surprised because there were only 4 persons who were from Latin America and Spain, in fact there was only one boy who was from Spain, and I think just 3 girls from Latin America. So it was kinda of shocking. There were Norwegians but also a lot of people from other countries (Persia, Somali, Finland, Poland) When I started I think there were more Spanish people and only two-three persons who were not Norwegian nor Spanish so it was shocking for us.
After that we talkt and had lunch together and there I met Arian who was one of the boys from Persia, he actually speaks really good Spanish. He is 21 I think and yeah we talk during lunchtime. Actually all these days I talked to everyone but I talkt more with the boys lmao.
Anyway, around 3pm we went to a ceremony of students in the center of Oslo. And after that we decided to go home and meet later to have "vors" (pronounced "fors") which is like a pre-party where you meet at a house and drink.
We decided to divide us so 4 fadders went to Elena's house and the other 4 went tl Herman's. Luisa, Alejandra and me went to Herman's. It was nice, I've never been in a vors before so I didn't know what to expect. At the beginning we didn't know what to do lmao so we just sat there listening to people tall, sometimes we made a comment about a topic but omg the first hour we were like.....(I'm tall about Luisa, Alejandra and me) The good thing is that Kjetil, the pretty guy, came so I could talk with him more HAHAHAHAHAH. I talked with all of them, I just remember a few names like Håvard who was this Norwegian guy and he was nice to talk to, I remember this blonde girl who was 19-20 and her middle name was Indianne (pretty name), I know Per (also Norwegian too) and there were more people but I don't remember. We played a game, no idea of what was its name but it was fun, by that way we all were somehow focused on the same thing, the vors started around 6pm, but I and my friends came at 7pm, we all left to Chateau Neuf which is a party-place which organized parties all this week. While we were cleaning the house we talked to more people, I talked with Kjetil and he speaks good Spanish too, he's so cuuuuteeee, and I don't know I just see good in him you know? Humble, friendly, caring, what a nice guy seriously.
We went to Chateau Neuf and I met Lucas there, and then I saw Arian and I mean we hugged, I hugged everyone that night, I wasnt drunt but I felt so happy. I know that on this party I saw most of the fadders except Birk and Luisa, but Luisa went to the airport around 10pm because her husband (yeah, husband and she's 26) came back from Bodø. Anyways, I talked with Simen, a new Spanish student, he's 19 and soooo cute like a baby we talked and he was so fun, I also talked with this guy from Finland. In fact he's half Finnish and half Nicaraguan, and yeah he's the one who can't Norwegian. He's handsome, and you know he goes to the gym because he has a strong back but he's short lol. Anyway, he's 21 and he was so funny, I mean yeah he was drunk but still...I remember he told me "you habe a nice tongue or mouth" but I didn't know if he meant that the way I speak was nice or that was a total indirect, now at this point (Sunday afternoon) I know it was an indirect.
Arian was also right next to me almost the whole time, I kind of feel like he liked me(?) He's nice but I don't see myself with him anyways... Actually that day was pretty good I really enjoyed, the only one who didn't hsve that much fun was Alejandra...
I remember that when I left I said bye to everyone hugging them and I remember that I went to say bye to Lucas and then Arian came hugging me first and I was like "yeaaaaah"
On Tuesday we had this meeting at uni at 9am, we were all dead, Arian joined us for a coffee but at the beginning we didn't talk. In fact, I was so tired I didn't want to talk to anyone. In the meeting I saw the Finnish guy almost asleep. After the meeting, we decidet to go around Oslo a little bit, Luisa and I talled with this girl who was half Spanish half Romanian (whose name I don't remember) and Erik, Norwegian guy who is 23 and has been studying one year Spanish via Yotube. And I feel a disgrace, because here I am 5 years in Norway and still have problems with the languange, damn you Erik. But seriously we were so tired that at 1am we were all home. At 4pm we had this karaoke thing and I was impressed because they all sang and it was so fun! I talked there also with Kjetil and Emil, Emil is also Norwegian, I don't know his age but I bet his my age or a year younger and it's so funny because when he uses glasses he looks like a total hipster (cute too), but without them he looks like these boys who loves surfing hahahah he's cute though, but doesn't speak that much Spanish.
After that we went to this place called Uhørt, where they drank beers and stuff, I actually didn't drink that day. At that place I met Armin, the other boy from Persia, this guy is 25(?) I think. And he speaks perfectly Spanish because he has lived there for 11 years. He's nice and funny too.
But yeah I left around.....9pm(?) Because I was so tired and I went to sleep at 10:30pm.
On Wednesday we had this game where they had to go around the campus and write answers, after the game there was pizza and we said which group won the game, whcih was a group of girl whose names I obviously don't remember. Well in fsct I think I remember one, Sofie but that's it.
Later around 7pm we had a quiz in the bar Union857, it was a cool bar actually and the quiz went great, I didn't know thst Norwegian were so interested in these games, but yeah they're fine. We finished st 10pm and Luisa and Alejandra decided to stay at home but I went out with these people and the rest of thw fadders because theh decided to go to a bar which was close to my house so yeah.
I sat with Kjetil (obviously), with Nikita ( a Chilean girl who is 19), Arian sat also in the same table and Emilie (I think it was her name, Norwegian too) later Thomas came and we talked too it was weird we talked a lot but he was tickling me and we even held hand a little but I mean to me it's normal(?) Like I could give the hand to someone and rested it there for a while lmao. Okay it's not normal, but for me it is. Then Elena came also and we talked too and also Simen talked with me a lot, Kjetil and Arian were in the same table talking too. Birk later came and seriously he was so nice, like what a nice boy I really like him as a friend. I feel like Kjetil, Thomas and Birk have this friend potentiy thing hahahsha I mean most of the boys I met this weel has it hahaha.
And well around 12:40 or something like that I just decided to go home because I had to work the next day. I hugged everyone, Arian hugged me even longer and I left Kjetil to the last minute, I actually did it on purpose. When I hugged everyone I stood up amd decided to move towards the door but then I turned around and said bye to everyone with the hand, and Kjetil looked at me like a pupoy and I was like "aaawee wait I'm coming" and I went to hug him hahaha. I said bye to Thomas too because by that time he was standing in the middle of the bar snd we hugged and I remember he kissed me on the cheek and I was like "okay! I'm going now" yeah what a nice goodbye hahahaha.
On Thursday I went to work, I seriously didn't want to, but yeah...I worked until 9pm, the good thing is that the plans with the new students weren't until 9pm so I managei to joind them around 10pm. They played bowling, I told my cousin Cristofer to join us. I introduced him to almost everyone. A Norwegian girl, Weselmøy, had a crush on him and at the end of the night she told me that if my cousin wanted she could be her sugarbaby or something like that, I was like....okay? But you know, you go girl! Alvaro, the Spanish boy has always been this week with us, he's so funny seriously and he confessed he was gay and I was like "whaaaat?" I mean I wasn't attracted to her at all but he didn't look like you know...gay. After bowling we went to Azúcar, a pub-disco and I don't know I gave all of myself dancing it was so fun, I was having such a great time there, when we wenteres I sat in a sofa whcih was a little bit higher than the other places, and Kjetil sat next to me, we didn't talk that much but you know he was there hahahaha we all danced there and while I was dancing like a diva in that platform where I was I realized I couldn't look at anyone because I mean I looked to the right and I saw the Finnish boy there looking at me smiling, then I looked at the left and saw Armin and Arian smiling to me too, damm it was so awkward lmao.
But yeah I had a really good time and actually my cousin got a long really good with Birk and Alvaro. And well we went home at...2-3(?)
The next day I had to open at work and I was dying but anyways! On Friday people had vors at 5pm but I decided to just come later to the party that it was at uni, it was... interesting. I don't know Arian and I didn't talk that much, I feel like he liked me but hest just giving up hahahaha I mean I like him as a person and as a friend but obviously I just don't see me with him, so the thing is that we don't talk that much anymore. Anyway, I saw Armin there but I didn't say hi at the beginning it wasn't until I went to another room wjere Alvaro and othe people were where I started to talk with him. It was, I mean, I was going down the stairs and he was behind me and I mean he hugged me but he also tried to kiss me but I kind of avoid him laughing looking to another place, but yeah, then when we were dancing he was all the time tickling me and hugging me, I mean he's nice but he's not my type I guess.
I got mad that night at Alejandra, don't know why but sje decided to hit me all the time (not hard but still) and even though I was like "the fuck is wrong with you" *joking tone* sje kept.doing it and I hit her back too she kept doing it until sje hit more my nose than my forehead and that's when I decided to be serious to her. Like I don't understand what happened to her honestly but I wasn't in the mood to forgive her at all, I even stopped talking to her for 30 min. Later we talked with Kjetil and Emil and omg they were so happy and sweaty hahahaha, after a while we all decided to go to a place called Mastermind, Alejandra at that time went home because she had to work, but I was fine with her leaving. Sje was being so annoying the whole night, even Albaro realized and told her. I remember she told me to not made up with Emil because it was hers but I was like "dude, you have a boyfriend so shut up" and then she said she wanted also to have boys hitting on her, but I was like YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT. And yeah it's true that almoy every time that we went out there were peopt hittit on me, but here I am. Single. The end.
Anyway, we went to Masteind, we went Kjetil, Emil, Elena, Birk, Thomas, Armin, Álvaro, a girl who was from Latin America (Gabriella), a friend of Álvaro (Ennis), Simen, and some Norwegian girls.
I remember on the way to this place I talled with Simen a lot. Then at the place I sat on this big sofa, to my left there was this Norwegian girl whose name is Linn and to my right Birk, then next to Birk Gabriella sat and the rest of the people sat around the sofa in chairs. Emil sat next to Linn and Kjetil next to Emil. Then there was Elena and Thomas maybe(?) A Norwegian girl, Simen, someone more, the Finnish guy, Armin, norwegian girls, and then Alvaro, Ennis and we ended the circle on Gabriella again. So it was actually pretty fine, we all talked, and had fun. It was also weird because I mean Birk jas a girlfriend and it looked like he was flirting with me but at the same time I guess he wasn't (?) Like before we went there he made a massage on my neck and I was like THE HELL IS GOING ON and the he also took my hand when we were sitting I don't know why, BUT THEN he started to tickle my neck and Somen and a Norwegian girl were looking at us and I was like "or Birk is too drunk or I don't know what's going on". Then Birk asked me about Thomas, if I liked him and I was like "what do you mean?" I like him yeah, but I don't know how much I like him, I just, I just feel like if he were taller I would be all around him , that's something I have to confess hahahaha. But yeah I asked Birk that and he was like "I saw you holding hands on Wednesday while talking to other people" and I was like "so? And you're taking my hand right now and like you literally kissed my hand a minute ago" like I was laughing at the situation so much, and I told him that I'm used to make some contact with people like holding hand but that doesn't mean anything. But anyway, I remember Simen went home first and when we were going to say goodbye, we hugged but he kissed me on the nexk and it was like a looooong kiss, like I mean for sure everyone saw that because we were standing there in the middle, lol. Armin after all he was the one who said goodbye the fastest, like I think he gave me a handshake(?). Funny. Elena, Birk, Kjetil, Emil and a few others went later and I remember Kjetil came to me to say goodbye and gave me also a kiss on the cheek and I was like OMG. And then, I don't know we went Alvaro, Thomas and the rest, at first Thomas said to me to wait for me, and I thought we were going in the same direction but obviously we weren't and also he met a few friends out of this place and started talking with them so I just say bye to everyone and headed home because I was freezing.
It was a great. I went to bed at 4am but I didn't worl until 12am so I had time to sleep enough.
Saturday I thought it was going to be like the best of the best but it was the most boring night of all. Kjetil didn't come, neither Emil. There were a lot of people who didn't come, Alvaro left also early, and I thought we were going to Chateau Neuf again but we didn't, and ended up in the same place we went on Thursday. But wven though I drank the same thing I did on Thursday and played the same songs, I wasn't in the mood at all. The oub was crowded and you couldn't even dance at all. I mean I talked to most of the people there but...yeah...I ended up going home at 1am.
But yeah the week in general was really good, and I'm glad I decided to be fadder. But anyway, no idea if I would be in a future fadder again, we'll see how is my energy hahahaha.

Mancora...
Since I wanted to be in the sun on my birthday, we spontaneously decided to fly to Piura on the evening of September 5th to spend the weekend on the beach of Mancora. After I had recovered from a small birthday party, we packed quickly and then we started to the airport. From Piura we had to cover another 180km to Mancora. Our flight arrived in the middle of the night, so we didn't have the possibility to take a bus, but a kind of large-capacity taxi. Although the airport in Piura is really small, one is addressed outside by so many taxi drivers. With normal taxis in Peru, however, some caution is necessary and therefore we considered for a long time which taxi we should take. But after our taxi driver could identify himself and his transport company was also registered, we started our ride. After almost 4 hours we arrived in Mancora and went to a hostel which we picked out before, but did not book. Luckily they had rooms available and so we took our own room with bathroom.
The next morning we briefly explored the small town, where there is not much to see except restaurants, bars, hostels and shops for tourists. On the beach there was surprisingly little activity, but one must also consider that in Peru it is winter and therefore not the main travel season. We looked for a quiet spot and just enjoyed the sun. At noon we had lunch in one of the many small Peruvian restaurants that offer menus consisting of starter, main course and drink for 10 soles (approx. 2,70€). In the evening we met friends from Denmark, who are also studying at our university and happened to be in Mancora at the same time. The next day we used to explore a beach just outside Mancora. With a Tuctuc, a very small mototaxi, we went to Los Organos, 15km away. In my opinion the beach was even more beautiful than in Mancora, because there were no visitors. But our search for food was a bit more difficult, because the place is so small. In the evening we went to the city centre with a surfer whom we had met on the spot and ate a little something. On Sunday I decided to take part in a whale-watching tour. It was agreed that I would be picked up at the hostel at 6.00 o'clock. After waiting more than half an hour I got a little nervous and called the given number as a precaution, but they assured me that they would be there soon. I still haven't got used to this Peruvian punctuality. In the van I met a family from Lima who treated me like their daughter during the whole tour. This confirms once again that the Peruvians are a very cordial people. Right at the beginning of the tour we saw a group of dolphins and also the first whales. Really great to see these animals in their natural habitat. Awesome how big these animals are. Throughout the tour we really saw a lot of whales and dolphins and the captain always told us interesting facts about the animals. At the end of the tour we went to Ñuros, where we had the opportunity to swim with turtles in the open ocean. I was not afraid of the turtles, but of the cold water. I was very happy that I wore a life jacket, because the cold ocean made me tremble in the beginning. After some time I got used to the water and could enjoy it. A guide accompanied us to the turtles and showed us again and again how we behave correctly towards the animals. It was very impressive to be so close to these animals. Out of the water again I was so cold and I was very happy to have so many jackets with me. After a common lunch we went home again and changed the hostel, in order to see again another part and beach section of Mancora. The rest of the day I spent at the pool because it was too windy at the sea. We enjoyed the sunset with a cool beer. On Monday I visited my first yoga lesson in the hostel. It was very relaxing, but it won't be my favorite activity. After a last lunch and visit at the beach we left Mancora with a time buffer of almost 7h before our flight starts, because in Peru everything can happen. Even if the ocean was too cold for bathing, I enjoyed the time on the beach and the sun there very much. Since eating out is cheaper than cooking myself, I tried a lot of new Peruvian dishes this weekend, all of which were really delicious. My stomach has improved and I believe in the food now.

thriller filler
As my previous post suggested, I was very busy these last couple of weeks. Today, however, I handed in my term paper and now I may enjoy 5 days of freedom till a new semester begins..... and since I am still far, far behind with my book reviews, I’m gonna sum up some of them and give a short account on 5 thrillers I’ve been reading in 2016 - none of them leaving me in awe, so I guess it is alright to throw them together in one mash-up review. I’ll keep it short and simple. There might be quotes (if I found anything worthy of quoting) and I made sure there are no spoilers.
19.2016: Jeremy Robinson - The Didymus Contingency
If you could go back in time, and witness any event, where would you go?
Tom Greenbaum and David Goodman have discovered time travel and go on a journey through time and space to Jerusalem, the Twelve Apostel, and Jesus. As in any time travelling story, our protagonists are about to observe and change (Christian) history, facing dangers and threats from the past, present, and future. Sci-Fi meets thriller meets religion. Not a complete waste of time but not a page-turner either. Maybe if you’re into that kind of stuff.
20.2016: Marc Elsberg - Blackout
A worldwide terrorist attack causes a total blackout and within hours and days, mayhem ensues and the world as we know it collapses without electricity. Elsberg has written a fast-paced thriller that manages to feel real to a certain extent, in a way that you could actually believe it to happen if the scenario was played out. Neat and nicely done and well researched.
21.2016: Harlan Coben - The Woods
Twenty years ago, four teenagers at summer camp walked into the woods at night. Two were found murdered, and the others were never seen again. Four families had their lives changed forever. Now, two decades later, they are about to change again.
And so we follow county prosecutor Paul Copeland as he has to (literally) dig up old corpses in the woods and fiind skeletons in the closet to finally bring closure to him and all the others involved in this brutal tragedy. The more I write the more I have to spoil so I won’t. It’s suspenseful, it’s full of twists and turns and reveals a rather complex background story. Paul is a very likable protagonist and if you’re looking for a well-written, high-paced thriller, look no further. I couldn’t put it down. You’re welcome.
Favourite quotes:
She drove, enjoying the time alone. She listened to Tom Waits sing that he hoped he didn't fall in love, but of course, he does.
Raya Singh worked at an Indian restaurant called Curry Up and Wait. I hate pun titles. Or do I love them? Let's go with love. [so very relatable]
“Ground control to Major Cope.” It was Muse. She hadn't said the words – she sang them, using the old David Bowie tune. [I’m definitely singing it, too]
The first sip of beer on a hot day is like that first finger-dip when you open a new jar of peanut butter. I enjoyed what could only be called God's nectar. [true]
Margot was the camp va-va-voom, and man, did she know. [Va-va-voom!]
Barry McGuire's classic 1965 antiwar anthem, “Eve of Destruction,” was playing. Troubling as this song was, it had always comforted Lucy. The song paints a devastatingly bleak picture of the world. He sings about the world exploding, about bodies in the Jordan River, about the fear of a nuclear button being pushed, about hate in Red China and Selma, Alabama (a forced rhyme, but it worked), about all the hypocrisy and hate in the world – and in the chorus he almost mockingly asks how the listener can be naive enough to think that we aren't on the eve of destruction.
So why did it comfort her?
Because it was true. The world was this terrible, awful place. The planet was on the brink back then. But it had survived […] We always seem to be on the eve of destruction. And we always seem to get through it.
22.2016: Tess Gerritsen - Playing with Fire
Puuuuuuh. Tess Gerritsen. I never really got into her. Dee, however, told me to read it and advertised it as: “The protagonist is a violinist named Julia and her daughter wants to kill her.” Teased like that, I had to see what was happening to my musical namesake. The novel is focused on Incendio, a composition Julia buys in an antique store in Rome. As she practices it, the music seems to have some dangerous effect on her daughter. In order to protect her family, Julia goes on a quest to find out about Incendio’s origins and uncovers the music’s dark secret.... The problem I had with this book was how it started and how it abandoned its originial plot completely throughout the second half. Don’t get me wrong - both storylines on their own are perfectly valid. I just didn’t like the above described onset to introduce the ‘revelation’ and a then somehow rushed resolution to Julia’s evil child problems. So no recommendation from me. Sorry.
Favourite (only) quote and actually a really nice sentence:
He sees the world in mathematical terms, and even the way he moves has a precise geometry to it, his tie swinging an arc, criss-crossing into a perfect knot. How different we are! The only numbers I care about are symphony and opus numbers and the time signatures on my music. Rob tells everyone that's why he was attracted to me, because unlike him, I'm an artist and air creature who daces in the sunshine. I used to worry that our differences would tear us apart, that Rob, who keeps his feet so firmly planted on the ground, would grow weary of keeping his air-creature wife from floating away in the clouds.
23.2016: Jilliane Hoffman - Cupido
Nasty, gruesome story about a rapist-clown, a young law student and their reunion in court when she has to face her former perpetrator but keep it cool to make sure he’s gonna rot in prison... I used to like stuff like that but I’m more kinda grossed out by it these days. I guess I’m getting old...
Favourite quote and - I speak from experience - great life hack!
“Möchtest du ein Glas Wein oder bist du noch im Dienst?”
Er folgte ihr. “Ich dachte, du hättest Kopfschmerzen?”
“Habe ich auch”, antwortete sie und öffnete den Kühlschrank. “Wein ist gut gegen Kopfschmerzen. Man vergisst einfach, dass man welche hatte.”
After this little marathon I have only got so many more books left to review. I’m almost glad I hardly found time to read this year (not even 3 books yet!!). And then there’s Janacek and some more music to review and admire. And recipes to share. And places I’ve been to tell from. I’ll keep you posted, cheeky promise!
Now off to enjoy a well-deserved Feierabendbeer in the spring sunset on my balcony. Cheers!!

A few questions about SR-22 Insurance?
Alright, so I'm getting slightly annoyed of the DMV as I've visited them three times already an had literally no progress made in all those lame visits... Anyways, I only got insurance so I can drive, but my car has failed smog three times now so that wont be happening and I'm now paying non-owner SR-22 insurance. Here are a few questions I have about the SR-22 and any input would be much appreciated. 1) What are the exact consequences if I choose to cancell my non-owner SR-22 insurance? I acknowledge that I will have to restart the process all over again when I want to reactivate it, but will the price be raised even more and the time frame? 2) Who do I call to find out how long I have to have SR-22 insurance; DMV or Local Court? 3) When does the SR-22 officially get activated, when the judge orders it or when I first started paying for the insurance? (I'm asking this because the insurance company I'm with is saying I shouldn't cancel because it will restart; I got the DUI 2 years ago and acitvated the insurance about 2 mounts ago.) Can't afford healthcare but make too much for medicaid?
I'm so frustrated with how our country handles healthcare - it should be a basic right for all citizens, not a big business. Anyway, my boyfriend and I are full-time students currently living off of student loans and not working while we are in a very demanding program. We have no health insurance and our school does not have a health clinic. My boyfriend has been having severe gastrointestinal issues that are getting increasingly worse, he fears he may have bowel cancer or some horrible disease and wants to get checked out. We looked into medicaid and found out he does not qualify b/c he has more than 2k in the bank (all loan money), but we need that money to pay rent and eat and pay tuition and books. The cheapest health insurance we can find is $150 a month and doesn't include any extra testing (like a colonoscopy, etc.) So, what does your average middle american trying to get by and go to school to become a better person do? Should we just wait until he dies? Seriously. Rapists and murderers in prison are getting better healthcare than your average family. This place sucks, I want to move to Europe. Any suggestions on how we can get him affordable or free help before he dies?""

Why is it mandatory to buy car insurance?
I understand if it's on a leased car but why on 100% paid off private cars? Why is it legal for insurance companies to force all car owners to buy coverage? It's not constitutional no different than forcing them to buy health insurance.

Car insurance payments?
I'm slightly confused over my car insurance. I took out a 12 month policy in December 2008 (paid a deposit at the time) and then paid by monthly installments. Help with insurance claim on exotic sports car?
My car ---an exotic sports model--- was damaged in a parking lot collision tonight. (My car was parked and struck by a guy who wasn't looking ahead.) Even if a 100% repair can be effected, the value of the car will be forever diminished because of the car's blemished history. People who buy these cars simply will not pay top dollar if the history shows any sort of collision repair. Of course the other guy's insurance is not going to want to give me an extra few grand to cover my eventual loss. What can I do to be covered? Would I have to sue for something like that? I have just sold my car to an Italian and he now wants to drive the car to Italy. He's been told he can't insure a car that isn't registered in Italy and my Insurance company can't help. How can he get Insurance for the Journey? What other pitfalls can we expect?
Who's Car Insurance Would Handle the Accident?
My sister has been driving my mother's car (Loan, registration, insurance in my mother's name) Occasionally she allows her boyfriend to drive the car, although my mother has stated on numerous occasions that she does not want him driving that car. He was in an accident on Friday and claims the car is totaled. He claims that he called the police and filed a report, it can be picked up on Tuesday. He also claims that his insurance is covering the accident. My problem is, the car is insured in my mother's name, so he is not allowed to do this, correct? Also, even though my mother was not involved in the accident, can she still call the police and get a copy of the report? After all, the car is in her name. Please enlighten me, I'm trying to figure this all out.""

Insurance on a car lease?
My insurance guy gave me below basic coverage on a lease which requires something like 100,000/300,000/100,000 but he did basic full coverage(something cheaper like 10/20/10) In the contract it states i must have 100/300/100 as the requirement but the insurance guy who does insurance for a lot of people says lower coverage should work. I just added it on and it's fine, so the insurance (progressive) sent me a letter saying I have to pay extra for adding a 3rd vehicle but nothing about the coverage amount. Will they later require I add more coverage? I don't see why I need 300k on a car that costs only 40 grand. people drive around with PIP 10/20/10 and that's good enough for the state. I have an excellent driving record with 0 accidents and have been driving for about 10 years. Becoming car insured in Ontario?
Recently I just acquired my G2. I am an almost-17 year old male, and I wanted to try to clear up a few questions about insurance before going to get some quotes. Firstly, would it be possible for me to have my own separate policy? With my own car - that's how my dad wants it apparently... I know it would be expensive..but I would probably end up choosing only liability coverage. Secondly, would it be possible to somehow prove to the insurance company that I am more responsible than the average stereotypical 17 year old male in hopes of lowering insurance? For example, can high school marks play a factor? I've heard about something like this, although I don't know if it applies to our provincial policies. I know the other factors, such as having a 4 door used sedan, in-class driving course etc. can also help lower the cost. All help is appreciated, thanks!""

What do car insurance investigators do?
My fiancee is an excluded driver on my car ins. He was driving my vehicle one day and got into a very small 'fender bender'. His fault. Barely bumped the lady. When she filed a claim, my insurance called me. Well of course I tried to convince them that i was driving the vehicle, but they don't believe me. My own car insurance. Aren't they supposed to be behind you and not the other driver? But anyway, he said SINCE he doesnt believe me, he's going to get insurance fraud investigators to do some investigating. The woman's car isnt worth but $900 blue book value. The fix of her bumper cost $1600. I'm not understanding why this is a big deal. I get that I'm trying to cover myself and have ins cover it, and lying about it, so please don't scold me for that. I'm just trying to get advice on this, and what i should do NOW. I'm not sure if the whole investigation thing is a joke, or something serious. Also, if i were to turn around and tell them that my fiancee was really driving, what would they do now that I've lied? And to top that off, insurance companies raised their prices! I can no long afford to insure the car when spring rolls around. My mom made a good good...why not insure the car under HER name at a DIFFERENT insurance company, and put me as a secondary driver? ""Under Obamacare, can I switch insurance companies anytime I want?""
I live in California and started new health insurance with Blue Shield on January 1, 2014. But they are awful. Even though I not only applied with them, I was accepted by them, I paid the January premium back in December, and they have already covered two of my prescriptions. But Blue Shield keeps mailing me letters saying I never paid them anything and that they are cancelling my application. My application? I made it past that stage. I am their client, not just an applicant. I can't get an answer from them and I'm worried that as of 1/28/14 I will no longer have health insurance (since that is the date they informed my on 1/24 that they are cancelling my application). So since Blue Shield thinks that I'm not even their client, that they think I never paid them the very first premium which I did and have proof of, can I ditch them and choose a new insurance company or do I have to wait for the next open enrollment? (And when would that be?) (FYI - Blue Shield has never mailed me a bill for February. They just keep mailing me the same bill that was due - and that I paid!!! - back in December that covered me for January.)""

Backen, Heimwerken, Backen, Gärtnern
(scroll down for English version: Baking, DIY, baking, gardening)
Baking, DIY, baking, gardening
Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not an early bird at all, but the things you're willing to do to bake bread... My alarm rang at 4:45am and I got up shortly after 5. I had a small breakfast and at 5:45 we started in the bakery. First, the dough for the brioche was made. While the others portioned the dough, I filled up the mill and Clément showed me how it works. Then we made the bread dough, mixed it with nuts / grains and portioned. Before we made a second batch of dough, I went outside with Aurélien to build a feeder on one of the orchards, which also serves as sheep pasture. Unfortunately, we did not have enough material to finish it, but starting is the hardest thing and atleast we've overcome that obstacle. After the DIY work, we went back to the bakery, where we again portioned and shaped dough. Today, the work with the dough went much better than on Monday. Next week, I'll be baking again for half a day and afterwards dough kneading should not be a problem anymore. After we were done preparing the last batch of dough for baking, I went outside to work in the garden. At 12 o'clock, I was done with my work. After lunch, I lay down and didn't get up until the evening unless it was absolutely essential. Being on my feet for 6 hours without so much as sitting down, has left its mark.
In the evening, Maria and I made a quiche together, spoke a lot of franglais and then David, the trainee (who sleeps in a caravan in front of the house) joined us for dinner. Clément and Rhea were still out climbing after delivering the bread and did not come home until after the meal. At 10pm, I called it a day. Tomorrow, I'll be able to sleep in and then we'll see what the day will bring.
Boulanger, bricolage, boulanger, jardiner
