Hi everyone, it's been about a year since I posted about updated COVID vaccines and it's time for another update if you are in the US:

THE BRIDGE ACCESS PROGRAM IS ENDING!!!!

If you are uninsured or your insurance does not cover covid boosters, please schedule a new booster appointment before the end of August because the Bridge Access Program (the way the government will still pay for your booster) ends in September. The updated mRNA boosters from Moderna and Pfizer are available now. Go Go GO!!!

Shitty, I know! If you can call your congressional reps, the FDA, the CDC, whomever to tell them you want this program to continue/be reinstated, that would be great. Also, while you're at it, call the FDA to tell them to expedite the approval for the updated Novavax booster (3017962640).

The new Novavax vaccine is designed for the JN.1 strain which is one of the most recent mutations of the virus going around. If you have insurance and can afford to wait, I highly recommend getting the Novavax booster when it becomes available.

We are currently in the largest Covid summer surge since 2021

If you haven't had a booster in the past six months you are essentially unvaccinated. New strains with different spike proteins keep evolving faster than vaccine development and distribution can keep up. All that said, getting Covid is not a moral failing. If you do feel sick, take a rapid test! If it's negative, test again a day or two later. It is better to know than not to know. Here's a refresh on how to take a rapid test correctly:

If you do get Covid, it is worth getting on antiretrovirals within the first week of symptoms to reduce the overall viral load your body has to fight. If your insurance doesn't cover Paxlovid or Remdesivir, here are other low/no-cost ways to access it:

If you get sick, rest radically even after you stop testing positive on rapid tests. Avoid exercising for at least eight weeks after the fact to reduce the risk of developing long covid.

Regardless of your vaccination status, masking with a KN95 or N95 respirator (or equivalent standards in your country i.e. FFP2/3 in the EU) is the most reliable way to protect yourself and others. If Covid protections are a financial burden, there is likely an active Mask Bloc near you doing free distribution of respirators and tests that would be happy to help you. Some quick tips: if you're wearing a bi-fold mask, flatten the nose-bridge wire completely, then mold it to your nose on your face for a better fit. As school is starting, getting you and your family boosted is one of the best things you can do to protect yourselves. Masking is perhaps even more important. If you can advocate for updating and regularly changing the HVAC filters at your local schools to MERV-13 or higher to keep the indoor air cleaner, that can also make a big difference. Better indoor air quality in schools helps protect kids from illness, allergies, wildfire smoke, and more per the EPA's website.

I'm not sure what options every program has, but on procreate here's my process:

-work at a high resolution so it doesnt get too crunchy when you intentionally crunch it later

-keep any foreground and background figures on their own layer group for later depth adjustment

-Use a no-pressure, small round brush for lineart to give even lines with no weight variance

-keep colors on figures to flats and shadows, shadows are very light grey set to multiply. In brighter settings, a clipping mask 'add' layer of the light source's colors set to low opacity over the figures can make things pop.

-turn on alpha lock for lineart and use a soft brush to make the lines have a red sheen where light touches most. Then duplicate lineart, gaussian blur the duplicate at a low %, and merge them back together.

-if there are any figures not in focus, blur them now (diff types of blur can be fun here but gaussian works fine for static figures).

-save the whole image as a jpeg and reopen it. -start with a 1% gaussian blur on the whole thing

-open up 'glitch' and select 'diverge', set zoom to 0%, and play around with the shift levels (usually about 15% for the filter lever, and around 10% red shift, 2% others).

-open bloom and play with bloom levels until it feels right (i usually do between 20-30%, max transition, and between 25-40% for size and burn depending on image)

-add a low % noise filter over the whole thing

-1% gaussian blur one more time

-maybe a low % gradient map if you feel like it needs color equalizing

ooo for first time i’d say do not let anyone tell u what brush u use doesn’t matter. artists will say this but they’re LYING bc they’re just too tired to send their brush links again (which is fair but still)

sometimes a brush can b make or break for drawing feeling comfortable or not, so play around a lot (settings, diff brushes, diff size, etc)

and get used to putting a gray bg temporarily so ur not staring at a harsh white canvas all the time, it’ll wear ur eyes out quickly !!!!

while brushes do matter, program doesn’t. just use what’s accessible for u and is fun to use🤝

AHHHHHHHHHHHH I FINISHED MY FIRST FULL LENGTH FIC HOLD ON LEMME JUST THROW UP IN THE CORNER REAL QUICK

i am sooooooo normal rn anyways let's get into it thank u for having me on the show, mr. kimmel. i've had a raging headache all day so the content underneath each sections will be kinda short. i'll go through and add more to it once i recover but i wanted to get this up before the week got too busy!

krolia

guys…. im so sorry for the angst….. it was necessary for the plot…….

maybe it’s just me projecting but in the actual show, i kind of wish we had seen more of the emotional fallout that occurred after krolia revealed that she was keith’s mom. because let’s be real here, there’s no way that keith’s traumatized ass would just willingly accept her back into his life. he’d have questions. he’d be in disbelief. it’s hard for him to open up to others and he carries a lot of hurt from being abandoned.

it was crucial in the course of this fic to have that confrontation between krolia and keith. it's not always going to be rainbows and sunshine, and even though they both missed each other deeply, you don't just automatically connect and forget everything that's happened. even if keith hadn't gone into the foster system, he definitely would have carried a lot of anger and hurt towards krolia when she shows back up. i'm sure that things won't just be smooth sailing and they'll need to hash things out multiple times as they rebuild their relationship but that first fight was a big hurdle to get over.

if you’re curious, i have a whooollleeee backstory for what happened with krolia and why she couldn’t get back to her kid. i couldn’t really fit it into the fic but i’ll put it right here for those who are interested:

2000: krolia in the US on student visa, first year of of PhD program

krolia meets heath and they fall in love

2003: krolia gives birth to keith

2008: krolia finishes grad school/PhD program/doctoral degree and applies for a work visa 

2009: she and heath and baby keith are living their life but krolia’s parents find out and are like girl you need to come home NOW or we will disown you 

krolia’s family are really wealthy and powerful 

krolia: i’ll come back for you guys idk how but i will 

krolia goes back to the states

2009-2011: she and heath write letters but then the letters start getting intercepted by the family and eventually peters out

krolia in arranged marriage and thinks her partner forgot about her or didn’t care

meanwhile heath doesn’t know what happened to krolia but can’t do anything about it bc she’s in a diff country and he doesn’t speak korean

2011: heath and keith move to texas for job or whatever

heath tells keith all about krolia and how she loves him but can’t be there and obvi that fucks keith up bc he misses his mom but where tf is she? how does he know she loves him if she’s not even there? he's a little kid

2013: heath dies and keith is put into the system

heath has no other family members

krolia put her english name on the birth certificate and so ofc she doesn’t exist in the US

texas social services try to reach out to krolia along with some friends but letters are intercepted

2016: someone reaches out to krolia after she finally gets facebook 

friend: thinking of you. miss you. so sorry about heath

krolia: …. what the fuck about heath?

krolia goes on rampage to her family like wtf u mean u didn’t tell me that the father of my child is dead

cousin shows up with the intercepted letters (official notice from social services, heath’s letters and pictures, keith’s little notes and drawings)

krolia starts the process of legally and financially emancipating herself from her family (she basically was Britney’d)

2017/2018: finally is free and able to get a job in the states

starts tracking down heath (they only had a forwarding address for krolia so they’re like wtf who is this bih)

at this point, keith has already met the shiroganes and changed his name

krolia is in a different state and can only do so much 

spends the next few years trying to find him, hires P.I., again keep running into blocks bc social workers and case managers are NOT going to budge on giving up keith's personal information

2023, winter break: krolia reaches out to keith through facebook but it goes into his spam since they’re not facebook friends

allura

what better allegory for sacrificing yourself to save the universe is there than graduating college? in all fairness, i felt like sticking to the notion of allura saying goodbye and leaving the group had its merit, just y’know, i wanted to take a step down from the whole dying thing. i tried to pay homage to the canon material as much as possible while also providing my own spin on things.

one thing that’s been important to me is depicting allura as a college student. sure, while i think most iterations of allura as a kind and a great leader and intelligent are great, even in modern au fics, i just wish there had been a bit more... silliness? outside of her being like the girlboss, the hell yeah supporting character or love interest or bone-tired leader, i always wonder what she would have been like if she hadn't had to save the universe and was just trying to heal on her own terms. yeah, i nerfed her parents in this universe but i tried to showcase her doing normal college things as well, like presenting at research conferences, getting a bit messy drunk, having pizza nights and group hang outs. the funny thing about grief is that life does not stop for it, so you have to just figure things out along the way.

i also didn't want to elaborate too much on her relationship with lotor. she didn't magically heal from that one conversation with lance in chapter 8 but i wanted the readers to get a taste of what was going on in her head through their dialogue. plus, it was a little moment to show how she was allowing herself to open up to other people like lance. no one woman is an island, no matter how much of a bad b!tch you are.

🫧 also, i wanted to include it somewhere but basically, keith knew allura and romelle were hooking up since chapter 14! keith caught romelle sneaking out of allura's room early one morning and he just kept it to himself because snitches get stitches.

pidge

they are so precious to me. they're an amalgamation of 2 of my closest friends, and well, me.

i always knew that pidge was going to be a super important piece in klance development. while lance and keith are great friends, i think pidge played a crucial role in bridging them together in the beginning, before the two of them had cleared up their misunderstandings and made that truce. sure, allura asked them to be on the paintball team but pidge really forced the two of them into close quarters. lance might have extended the offer to keith to hand out without pidge or he might not have. honestly, i'm not really sure. but pidge inviting keith to hang out in chapter 4 was a quiet but big moment because both keith and lance are friends with pidge and will set aside their differences long enough to tolerate each other's presence in a shared space. pidge just has #babyofthefriendgroup privileges.

🫧 i honestly think that after the main two, pidge has undergone the most growth (physically and emotionally) throughout the fic, even though they're a supporting character. we can all benefit from community and friendship but i think pidge needed it a little bit more.

🫧 i partially wrote pidge to represent my younger self, especially when i first attended college. i was scared and alone and i had never been away from home and it was a struggle to form new relationships (and figure out my gender identity. mannnnnn fuck that). it was nice to see pidge find their place and niche among the greater social fabric of college, kind of like comforting my younger self for all the loneliness and uncertainty i endured.

hunk

i love hunk so dearly. ngl, i wanted him to have a bigger arc than he did but hopefully i did a decent job at making feel more well-rounded as a supporting character. i decided to actually kind of lean into this distance in the later chapters as well, esp from lance's pov, as they both got busier. at the end of the day, though, i knew that those two would come back together. hunk is a kind and sympathetic friend and his and lance's friendship will persevere because they're good communicators. their little talk in chapter 17 was me talking to myself and to anyone else who has went through a similar thing where they find themselves drifting a little farther from a friend.

people get busy and that's okay! there will be ebbs and flows in every relationship. even though shared history is a crucial part of a friendship but it can't be the only thing that will keep it going. you need to nurture it and tend to it in order for it to keep it alive and flourishing. hunk understands this and he and lance will be just fine after their talk. hunk is probably the most emotionally intelligent person after adam in the group, and i'm glad he was there to help both lance and keith out when they needed it.

adam

this man!!!!! got i have gotten so fucking attached to adam throughout this fic. he is so dear to me. i know in chapter 10 i wrote from adam's pov and he's a goofy guy in his twenties who's just trying to be a good dad friend but somehow he ended up being a voice of reason and comfort for klance in this fic. lance misses his family a lot and i think adam can not only relate to lance with the homesickness but also lance has started to rely on him a bit like he would with his siblings.

i wanted to try my own spin on adam and keith's relationship. i've seen fics where adam and keith hate each other, don't interact much, or adam takes on a parenting role towards keith as a kid. i wanted to look at keith and adam in the context of two people who both love shiro and then grow to be good friends/surrogate brother-in-law? idk. long story short, adam is very emotionally intelligent and i think he genuinely wanted to get to know keith outside of his connection with shiro and was patient enough to coax keith out of his shell. i tried to write in small ways adam takes care of keith like giving him LactoJoys because Keith likes the taste better than Lactaids, being there for him for his panic attack, adding food to his plate. things that won't draw too much attention, because we all know how keith is about receiving acts of kindness.

i mentioned this in a comment under one of the chapters but all of the advice adam gives keith is either advice i personally received myself or something i wish i could tell my younger self. i hope those words bring you comfort as well!

shiro

i had a lot more planned for shiro but goddammit i had no fucking time or space at this panned out. it's more so klance's story than shiro's.

look, there's a small moment in chapter 18 where shiro is very pleased (and a little surprised) that keith has talked about him with krolia. it has less to do with his faith in keith and more with how he sees himself. shiro has already acknowledged that he has heavy imposter syndrome and deals with his own struggles with self image. it's just always a jolt to your system when someone (could be your own family or your partner of years) validates your relationship.

shiro loves keith very much and just wants to be the best big brother. he has such eldest child syndrome, where he tries to pretend that everything is fine even though things are actually crumbling around him. the thing is, though, you can't build intimacy— real, lasting intimacy and depth in a relationship— without being vulnerable. shiro understands that even though he wants keith to work on opening up, he has to do the same and reciprocate the actions, or else neither of them will really get anywhere and be stuck in that loop of "are you mad at me/i feel like you're hiding something from me/i don't really know who you are."

i tried writing a bit from shiro's pov but i quickly realized that that would drastically change the tone of the fic so i had to scrap it. i might post a little oneshot in the distant future with adashi, though.

keith

🫧 i've talked about this before but although i think keith grew the most as a character in the canon show, that shit was WAY too fast and off-screen. also, i know that the whole found family trope is what drew a lot of fans to voltron in the first place (like me) but is the found family in the room with us rn? i felt like they all started to fall apart or at least weren't as close as the show wanted us to believe. it felt a lot like telling with no showing. other than some occasional moments in the show, the whole #teamasfamily felt hollow.

🫧 i wanted to build on this potential found family for keith's character. he's never had a support system before and he's used to pushing people away but now he has a whole ass friend group that's ready to fight for him if he gives the word.

🫧 initially, when i was writing keith's pov and trying to get a feel for his voice and tone, i struggled a bit. keith is one of those characters that i liked and sympathized with, but getting into his head was a whole different story. i'm more of a lance kinnie but once i got the hand of keith's voice, it was a lot easier. some of my best pieces of writing are from keith's pov! i tried to be as cognizant of keith's development as much as possible as i wrote (think me having various checkpoints for his journey whereas with lance i could just coast on vibes), and i'm pleased with how far he's come.

🫧 although both keith and lance's progress can showcased through their consciousness and thoughts (like duh ur reading from their povs), i leaned into keith's behavior as a way to portray his progress a bit more than lance. things like him being more open to physical affection, not sitting on the outskirts of group dynamics and sticking to shiro, and allowing himself to collect things, which by the way:

🫧 i like the idea of keith's room, once being so empty and ghost-like, is now full of stuff, mementos of his relationships that he's built. i tried to sprinkle in some relics from past chapters (paintball flag, polaroids, ticket stubs), as well add some new tidbits, like shiro giving him a cacti and that korean cookbook!

lance and marco

no i did not just torture lance for the sake of torturing him i would never do that to my boy.

i know this is a fanfiction, but from the start, i wanted to ground this fic in reality and breathe some life into it. lance's little arc with his brother having a substance abuse problem was loosely inspired by events in my personal life.

🫧 i'm not saying that everyone goes through something as drastic as a loved one going to rehab, but as young adults, when we leave home for uni, jobs, other opportunities, etc, there's this worry that something bad will happen while we're away. and often times it does. someone gets sick, a beloved pet passes away, it's all bound to happen. your childhood becomes a thing of the past, and things that you thought would stay the same just won't.

i projected a lot of my feelings onto lance ngl, and writing him work through his own grief and guilt over not being able to be with his family when they're going through a crisis helped me process a little bit more.

although lance had a happier ending than a lot of families might get in reality, i still wanted to show lance having a support system at college and realizing that he has a second family to lean on, and people who love and support him. he doesn't have to pretend to be okay for anyone and that's okay.

black paladin lance or as close to it as i could get

it was so important for me to make lance the new captain of their paintball team, as a stand-in for the black paladin arc he could have had in the show. he’s always been a selfless guy who puts others first and really pulls up when he needs to. he deserves to be recognized for that. not only did every single one of his friends validate him, but the person he looks up to the most literally endorsed him. lance struggles with his inferiority complex and the election scene was a little feel good moment for me, personally, so that he could receive the acknowledgement he deserves, especially with his growth. he's gonna be an awesome team captain (he'll be shuffling down to shiro's room at 2am covered in hickeys and talking about paintball strategies).

wrapping up loose ends

i tried to wrap up as many loose ends as possible and give all the characters a proper send-off. originally i wanted lance and hunk to also move into the house in castle street, like repurpose the basement or something but i realized that that just wasn’t possible because most college basements don’t even have heating or like,,,, a livable arrangement.

ultimately, i think it makes sense for pidge to be the one to take up allura’s room at the house. pidge has lived a single during the academic year but they also had lance and hunk right fifty feet away so it’s not like they REALLY lived alone that year. there was also the logistics of the house having a vacant room, and as much as i would have loved to have all of voltron under the same roof (hunk and pidge sharing a room, keith and lance sharing a room), i think they would kill each other. pidge filling in the gap felt like the right move. and lance and hunk are gonna be over a lot anyways, so it’s not like much has changed in the trio's group dynamic.

🫧 what was your favorite chapter to write?

i think i have different chapters in mind for different reasons, even if it's a copout answer. here are the chapters that are dearest to me:

chapter 4: recalibration this is the chapter where i really got to play around with character interactions. keith and lance's worlds were beginning to integrate in chapter 3 but in this chapter, i got to explore different friendships, like keith & pidge and lance & hunk, and the dynamics they entailed. you can see how important these friendships are to both lance and keith, and how their connection with others eventually helps them to reflect on their previous feelings toward each other, like "hmm maybe i've been too harsh with the other."

chapter 10: let's go to the beach the group dynamics were so solidified to this point, and it was so fun to write. i loved writing from adam's pov and being able to zoom out and showcase klance's relationship progression.

the winter break interludes i waxed poetic about these in a previous faq but to reiterate: i'm really pleased with the way each individual chapter turned out. i love a good character study, and it was a great challenge to my writing and characterization to dig deeper into their home lives and see how the past confronted the present, where their respective childhoods were brought into the light, and how long-held notions of belonging, home, and identity were challenged and remolded.

chapter 17: warm and light my beta reader drunkenguac said that this was some of my best writing and i've been coasting off of that validation for the past 4 months. keith's reunion with his mother was especially cathartic for me. as an adoptee, writing this chapter honestly helped me work through some of my feelings about my adoption as i pictured what it would look like if i was ever reunited with my birth mother. i'm very fortunate that i didn't have to go through the same experiences keith did, but i tried to imbue as much humanness as possible into his section.

chapter 18: moving on it just felt like a proper send-off, the one that we never got from s8 of voltron. i wanted the last chapter to basically have this vibe of "hey, things won't be the same but it's going to be okay because we have each other." when shiro tells matt in the end, "we'll still be here," that's me as the author, telling you, the reader, that this fic will still be here whenever you want to revisit it. it was a comfort to write and i've heard that it's a comfort to read, which is so so so gratifying. when i set out to write this fic in august of 2023, i didn't have any plans of grandeur or even expect like more than 100 people read it— it was just a passion project that i decided to share, and i'm glad that others have sought safety in it. outside of fandom, this fic is a love letter to my own college experience. i remember reading a college au fic when i was still in high school and lonely and closeted and repressed and wondering if i would ever be able to get out of my hometown and find a community as tightly-knit as the fic portrayed it. in a way, i got to reflect on my college experience by writing looking out for you. i find solace in this fic when i read back over it, and i can see aspects of my adventures throughout my freshman and sophomore and junior and senior years, waving from behind a thinly veiled curtain. this fic is dedicated to all the people who made my college experience.

anyways that's me rambling for now! thank you again to everyone who has tuned into looking out for you. this is the first piece of creative writing i've done in a long time, and i never expected to actually finish it. i'm so happy with the way it turned out and the love it's received. until next time!

ive been both really busy and also not? hahah but ive been good!! i've been mostly working. today was crazy actually, someone walked into the vet with a bearded lizard?? that they found ?? at the local park?? someone had just abandoned their lizard there ig which was really sad but im glad someone found it and was able to help it!! also the person who found it was a vet tech themselves who used to have bearded lizards so that's good hahahah they were v prepared

our doctor unfortunately doesn't take any exotics so we had to send them to a diff vet but it was cool to see the lizard, he was very sweet and friendly EUEUUEUE

but yeah other than work? mostly just been writing which has been super nice. this is the first year im properly tackling whumptober!! normally i just. pick and choose my fav prompts LMAOO but this year im actually writing for each prompt every day and i've done all 7 days so far!! im super proud of myself rahshshs

i went to my first social dance a couple weekends ago!! that was super funn

i cannot remember if i told you, but i started doing west coast swing lessons!!! since i took a gap year of school while waiting to apply for the vet tech program, i was like "welp i need some sort of hobby that gets me out of the house" so i didnt stew in bad mental health n stuff and i decided to try dance! i'd seen vids of it on my youtube shorts a lot and it always looked so... freeing. and i thought doing something that involved physical activity would be a good idea too since exercise is good for mental health!!

and woww i love it way more than i was expecting HAHHAHASDKFJJK it's so so fun and it really does feel like flying (when you do it with an experienced lead lol, so not always but the times where it's happened i cherish v much <3) and the people?? are all so nice???? like wow i was a bit nervous when i first started but everyone is so welcoming and understanding and super fun to talk to and it's a very accepting environment of queer ppl and i just RAHSHS ITS SOOO LOVELY BEE OH MY GOSHH

but yeah!! so ive been doing that sinceee march but i had yet to go to an actual dance, i'd only done lessons bc i was really nervous lol but also bc its on the weekends and thats when i go visit my mom so its hard to find time. but i finally decided to go no matter what last time (which yeah. almost canceled bc i ended up having two other meetups that day?? it was busy) and im really glad i went it was super fun.

oh no I'm so sad that someone abandoned their beardie :((( thank god someone found it though and wanted to make sure it was okay. so many people would just leave it so that little guy got lucky with that at least. I love bearded dragons, one of my teachers in high school had one she named Mushu and she would let him just run around the room during class sometimes. he was adorable.

Just thinking about my RVB character Poppy... I'll eventually get her in my story-line, there's just all the other plot stuff that needs to happen first. I do have some pictures of her, though! I can't draw armor to save my life, but hers would be white (with tan accents, styled a bit like Florida's during Project Freelancer). When I started absorbing RVB, my brain sparked several potential story concepts and characters... eventually, I refined what I wanted, and combined a few ideas into Poppy! She's going to be part of Red Team; for one thing, they almost never get new people (true, this is because their current members don't... die... as often as SOMEBODY, but still. even though Carolina isn't technically on either team, she and Wash kinda gravitated toward the Blues. The Reds "unofficially" have Doc, because he hangs out with Donut, and Grif caught Locus in the friendship net, but we need a REAL "New Red!"). For another, they've got exactly zero girls. Blue Team gets all the ladies (*finger-guns from Tucker*). Somebody needs to even this out. Finally, with white armor, the prophecy of Red Team being the lesbian flag has been fulfilled!

Her name was chosen because I wanted to use a flower, but not one I've named a character before. I was also re-watching Little Nemo, so I borrowed the name McCay

Poppy didn't actually "join" the army. At least, not in a traditional sense. She was "selected" to be part of a "special training program", which turned out to be tricking poor and homeless people into working at dangerous outposts. When one area was getting attacked, a lot of the people running the show took escape ships for themselves. Poppy was able to find a set of armor, and now looking "official", she helped guide all the people who would have been abandoned to safety. When she got them all to a rescue ship, a soldier asked if she had been in charge of that outpost. She basically pretended that yes, she TOTALLY was the boss. Yep. Hired herself, and gave herself a promotion. Before she could back out or escape, she was congratulated for saving all those lives, and then thrown into a new "assignment". Whoops.

Poppy was later sent to a group of Red and Blue team Flag Zealots (during the Blood Gulch days, but they never interacted with anybody from there). She was supposed to evaluate their efficiency, and order more supplies as needed. The Blue Team contained Lou, Drew, and Hue. The Red Team was made up of Ted, Jed, and Fred. Obviously, they weren't very efficient at ALL, but were suprisingly endearing. Because Poppy wasn't technically on one side or the other, both teams decided she was off-limits when it came to fighting; nobody hurts Poppy! She's everybody's friend. At most, they would fight over who was her favorite~

Eventually, they ran out of ammo, and Poppy just... didn't order more. The fighting turned into more harmless pranks, and they perhaps would have eventually reached a point of shared friendship if things had continued like that. Unfortunately, something terrible happened. It started when Poppy was injured saving the others from a mine they forgot they planted. She was hurt and knocked-out, but recovering. That wasn't the terrible thing; while she was out, Somebody from Temple's group came looking for new members. These Reds and Blues refused to join. They were killed, and when Poppy woke up, she was alone.

For a while, Poppy had to stay hidden and keep a low profile. A lot of stuff was happening in the background. By the time she got discovered by UNSC soldiers again, she was still recognized as part of the Flag Zealots (even though she literally DID NOT CARE ABOUT THE FLAGS), and Temple just tried to pull his big plan... so they decided this made her a criminal (ha! when she does something illegal, it's on purpose, and she's less annoying about it, thank you). Somebody at the UNSC thought the best thing to do with left over Flag Zealots was to use all their "devotion" for a different cause... which is INSIDIOUS AS HECK. The person called in to handle training these soldiers is somebody very LOYAL and PASSIONATE, the Reddest Red to ever Red; Sarge.

At first, Sarge is very happy to be back in his comfort-zone. However, well... he might always be seeing red, but he doesn't quite have the rose-colored glasses when looking at the military that he used to. In particular, when he hears about the life of one particular trouble-making smart-mouth named Poppy, it reminds him of the people he's been spending the last couple of decades with. The way the military chewed them up, spit them out, and told them it was a good idea to take other people down with them. Papa Warcrimes has some things to think about!

One thing he knows for sure, he's adopting this little firecracker! Although she's introduced to the Reds (and the rest of the group) through Sarge, once she's in there, Poppy is meant to sort of mirror Simmons. Just like the Reds rarely get new people, Simmons rarely gets new friends. She has things in common with him, like rattling off random trivia she knows, and she's also very different from him. The fact that Sarge likes her, and she's a nerd, SHOULD make Simmons hate her guts, and he was about ready for that... but after one conversation with her, he internally just clicked with her- "Oh, sibling? Sibling!". This is extra symbolic, because the one who killed her Reds and Blues was, in fact, Gene. Poppy really doesn't care for him very muchly, but she likes Simmons a lot, and that makes him very happy (she DOESN'T think he's the same as Gene? She LIKES all his nonsense nerd chatter? SIBLING!). Also, she and Simmons are trans in opposite directions~

So, both @palebdot and @dyrewrites were kind enough to tag me, and I finally had a minute to answer this!

1) What motivates you to write?

It's more of a compulsion, really. Things get stuck in my head; characters stroll in and start saying stuff, or going through scenes, and then I get that electric buzz that makes me absolutely have to scramble for either my notebook or my laptop.

2) A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud/happy of. If not maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them)

From a recently completed work, the Prairie Weather trilogy, which I want to shop around and see if I can get published traditionally:

Before him gaped the yawning gulf of his own fuckup. It was dizzying. He’d heard of staring into the abyss, and the abyss staring back, but he hadn’t expected it to be quite so mortifying.

I tend to be at least a bit more poetic usually, but this line just kicks so hard.

3) Which OC makes you smile every time you think/talk about them and what are they like?

Right now, probably Isabella from the Hell Saga - she's just so good-natured, down for anything, and fundamentally kind and hopeful. She really goes through the ringer in book 2, which I'm working on now with my coauthor, though. This is another series we're hoping to go trad on, so cross your fingers for this irrepressible, bisexual Latina and Hispanic counsellor with a strong socialist streak!

4) What process of writing do you enjoy the most?

The first draft can be really fun, but there's something to be said for that second-draft, "all the pieces are in place, now I just have to tweak them" experience. Finishing a book is also a hell of a rush. But that real, fixated feeling of being in the thick of it, often while listening to a playlist I've made specially for the project - that's definitely the good stuff, too.

5) What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)

Characters, dialogue, worldbuilding, and description - in no particular order. I'm really good at making up little people, making them friends and lovers, and then putting 'em through the wringer.

6) What is something in the writeblr community is most enjoyable?

The community and enthusiasm are really winning me over, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the relative skill of my friends, too!

7) A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech to text, a writing program etc)

My Youtube playlists are absolutely required tools for my writing, a lot of the time. Sometimes I can write without them, but boy do they help. Some of them are also related to my D&D campaigns, but I'd like to think all of them are pretty well-curated.

8) A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law etc)

The Underlighters series' underground city setting is probably one of the coolest things I've ever come up with. I was somewhat inspired by The City of Ember, but that book frustrated me so much that I vowed to write a much better version. Hopefully, I did. I tried to make it reasonably cohesive and somewhat scientifically justifiable.

However, I always tell a story about Underlighters - when I was trying to figure out the pollination situation for crops, I was doing research at about 2 in the morning one day on various pollinators and getting nowhere. Can bees live underground??? Some bees and wasps nest in the dirt, but that's not necessarily helpful. What about solitary bees and pollinators?

Startling my then-boyfriend (now husband) from his game, I threw my arms in the air and yelled, "Fuck it - cave bees!"

And so I decided that underground apiculture was an acceptable solution.

9) What piece of advice would you say to encourage others to write if they are having a rough patch?

Try some different strategies and don't be afraid to rotate between projects. Try writing in point form, using different software, doing voice dictation - it can take a long time to figure out the exact right hacks to make your story flow.

I work as a dev in industry and we use a few diff languages, but a very solid place to start is python. it's the most 'readable' and human comprehendable IMO, and a way to get the fundamental understanding of programming without getting as tripped up by 'FUCK I missed a ; that's why the last 2 hours haven't worked'.

Visual Studio Code [also called VS Code -different from Visual Studio] is a good IDE to use [integrated development environment - the program you use to write the code in] and it has a lot of keyboard shortcuts that help things. it has potential to be a bit overwhelming if you're unused to it though.

for learning, Codecademy is a great site where you learn by doing/editing/playing around, and it gives you an inbrowser web IDE to use [an alternative to VS code if you don't get on with that]. it has a free and paid option, paid unlocking more courses you can do. python3 [the most relevant version, python2 is mostly outdated/not used as much] is paywalled, but it's good for learning any other languages like js or java or etc etc.

w3schools is one of my fav resources - it's more of a reading guide with pages on lots of topics, and it's also available in MANY languages. it has a little exercise at the bottom of the page - very simple, but for the repetition aspect, and there's also a 'test' you can go through on topics to get even more practice. it's REALLY good for when you're in the middle of writing smth and go 'fuck how do I do lists [or whatever]' and it lays it out very clearly + simply and doesn't overload.

I've used a few diff languages but python is where I started and I'm v glad for it because I could learn programming fundamentals without the meticulous syntax that other languages use. anyone recommending pure C is fjksdhfkhsgk. C# and C++ are a bit better, though I only have limited exp with those. JS is good for the fact it is more forgiving, and you can play around a bit more. it's not exactly a beefy language though, it's more used for website functionality.

out of curiosity, what is it you're using to learn stuff? I'm always looking to learn and improve :,]

yeah, i'm alive and here. i've just been incredibly busy with school stuff. i'll be done with school (mostly) on april 26 and after that i will have so. much. time.

i'll put it under the cut so no one has to see it if they don't want, but if anyone is interested in pharmacy school stuff then here's what i've been doing lately:

For one, I started my rotations at the university hospital! I'm doing admissions medication reconciliation, which basically means I get assigned a few patients and I spend the rest of the day contacting the patients, family, pharmacies, whoever I need to in order to get the most up-to-date list of medications, how they're supposed to be taken, how they're actually taken, and when the last dose was taken. It's been extremely rewarding and I love getting more exposure to hospital work but it's definitely exhausting.

It's also comprehensive final time for our IP class. IP is integrated pharmacotherapy, so basically it's the course where we go disease state by disease state and learn background, etiology, diagnosis, treatment options, as well as science of the medications such as structure/medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, drug interactions/contraindications, monitoring parameters, counseling points, and how to choose between all of them. For this comprehensive final we're covering GI diseases, such as GERD, PUD, IBS, IBD, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, as well as Infectious Disease which is a ton of antibiotic/antifungal information as well as treatment for HAP/VAP/CAP, Fungal Infections, Helminths/Ectoparasites/Protozoa, TB, Malaria, C. Diff, Skin Infections, Intra-Abdominal Infections, AOM, Pharyngitis, Sinusitis, UTIs, and STIs. It's. A. Lot.

I also have my Top 200 drugs exam coming up. This is where they test us on the Top 200 outpatient drugs, the Top 50 OTC drugs, and the Top 50 inpatient drugs. For this, we have to know brand name, generic name, mechanism of action, monitoring parameters, side effects, drug interactions, counseling points, contraindications, and any black box warnings they have.

Also, it's program-level assessment time. What does this mean? Well, at the end of every year, we have to take a written exam and a practical exam for all of the content we've learned this far in pharmacy school. So, my 2 hour written exam will cover all content from last year and this year, and my practical exam will have us interviewing a patient and doing that kind of work for 2 hours based on disease states we've covered thus far. It's exactly as stressful as it sounds and I've been studying like wild.

Overall, I'm so excited to finally be learning treatment stuff and really getting exposure to working in the places I hope to work in as a career someday, but it's also been pretty stressful this past month especially. People say the post-spring break of this year is notoriously some of the most difficult anyone in the program will go through, so we're working hard!

so ankoku was created from a daydream character ive had for like two years now? he originally stemmed from a more tragic version of scorpius malfoy from hpcc (ik shoot me now what was i thinking) but then i started feeling really weird about making it actually Him since like i cant see scorpius without seeing the actors and i dont wanna like put that onto the actors if that makes sense?? idk, so i just made him a new character and used mha as the medium to do it back in december

mha ankoku is the son of popular villain The Jester, he's like as popular as stain but obv for diff reasons. The Jester is a villain through and through, and really gave ankoku a shit ton of trauma. The Jester is a scientist and used experiments as part of his "tricks." his mentor was actually the doctor AFO is buddies with, so he helped him create some ideas and experiments. the doctor was experimenting with quirk stealing and enhancing, and The Jester was like "what about quirk creation, but not like from other quirks?" so he experimented and experimented and eventually found a way to take the darkness and pain from people, turn it into a quirk and gave that quirk to ankoku. so he gave ankoku the quirk "dark manifestation" where he can turn the darkness inside of him into shadow creatures, kinda like the alternates from the mandela catalogue (which is what i took as inspo for it). obviously darkness inside of you is not good, so that plus the harsh treatment from The Jester makes him very depressed and empty. also! he has a lil creature attached to him made of the darkness, and that creature is the thing that actually creates the shadow creatures it comes out of it.

when ankoku was 14, The Jester died and blamed it on his son. the heroes came and assumed that ankoku was a villain just like The Jester was, so because he's too young to go to prison and they havent actually pinned him for any crimes they created a "Villain Reform Program" at UA and sent him there. he's a part of canon class 1-a for the academic stuff, but then is off to the side watching and doing his own thing with aizawa when theyre doing hero stuff. the class, obv, thinks hes a villain and stays far away from him. they arent necessarily scared of him, just wary. aizawa is assigned as his Watcher, so he kinda follows him around everywhere and stays with him. because of this, he is obligated to go with him on the shie hassaikai raid.

at the raid, kirishima sees how manly and not-evil he is and becomes his friend. he also talks to eri a lot, since shes also staying with aizawa and they both are children of villains and were abused. during the school festival arc, kirishima finds out that ankoku loves to play the guitar and that its the only thing that makes him happy, so he vouches for him to be a part of the band. the other kids who were a part of the raid vouch for him, and hes in the band. there, he gets close with tokoyami and they bond over their dark/shadow quirks.

We are looking for our children ages 10 to 12 for management and ages 5 to 10 for factory work and office work and to build the pagliani motorcycle if the adults think that it's not right they can try and take over the project but right now we're going to start it up because we have to do something it's great training they'll have the toy at home. We know that some of it works because some of us got the toy and it's a symbol of our dedication to the program. I'd like to start this up today so I'm gonna put the full package in today and ask them to redline it and expedite it for the request of Zeus and solemn request of Hara who needs something to do this week. We have a lot to say and we have a lot to do but this is a great idea and we're going to go forwards with it. We have a lot to talk about here this place is a nightmare and right now. To fix this place I was sending stuff in. Trying to get this going and he says try very hard OK we're gonna get it going I do know what you're saying. Going to get this company going and we're going to have children started we're going to get them involved a lot more and they will get their parents going. This is a special assignment they need clearance a certain age they should be in National Guard it's like the explorer post but it's a little more serious and they do it on the weekends and their parents go and we need people to sign on to them or create it he doesn't know if it's in existence but we need you to go and do that now.

So we might have management we tend to fifteen 16 year olds get to do more. And or 12 toes 15 and yeah 16 year olds are doing other stuff and we would have another category 8 to 10 I mean 8 to 12 that's what I said. Those guys would be doing supervisory roles we're gonna get going on this we can do it this is fun. To learn this stuff more and we need to get involved more and there's a lot of this stuff and he says to us this is a big step I took much bigger steps unfortunately but it's a big step in direction that he has not taken and we can get really good at it's important and it is very important and also if it doesn't work at this particular type of machine factory there are a lot of off-road vehicles and things of that nature toys that we can do and we like the idea too and we thank you our father and mother.

Yeah that's her name but I'm going to sponsor this project and what he says is if it's for older kids or adults we can switch it over and we'll go to toys but he knows how it is and he thinks differently but it might be different than what he's thinking so it is going to work but he says the kids of his age when he was three years old or four years old they can ride these motorcycles and we know they can and he was doing amazing things. So we're going to try it this way and we will have them in other factors for sure none of them will have nothing to do they're going to be important and we think older adults if it doesn't work 18 and above for the factory but we have not tried this yet no we have we know how it works out and the kids are looking forward to it. Says that we will have toy pagster and toy 4 wheelers and quads and single seaters and they'll be with Briggs and Stratton if we can't do this one and they want to do that now.

Seems like it doesn't know what he's doing no he does he did this with his Kawasaki but he did have other stuff first bicycles and things like that we need those but boy they're a drag E bikes are where it's at and we have specific ones that work we might make those too that's for a little older crowd no he says BMXE bike they're like the Harley Davidson and we could make one at Pagsda if someone wants to champion it and some 5 year old brave kid wants to fight Brian on the track. I cannot actually tell you how this works with a screen reader (as I am not confident in my accessibility competency). But what I CAN tell you is that while this would technically work, I would not recommend using this exact method

Use <span title="hover text">fic text</span> instead!

Here's why:

First, some Vocab:

A Tag is the thing between the < and > brackets that has a name. <div> is a tag. <p> is a tag. <i> and <b> used to be tags, but are obsolete as of now, and it is recommended to use <em> and <strong> respectively. There are lots of tags, which all do different things and serve diff purposes.

My favorite resource for HTML tags is the handy comprehensive list hosted on W3Schools, because it keeps track of obsolescence and gives definitions and examples. Remember that not ALL tags that exist are usable on AO3, but you can cross reference the full list with the AO3 HTML guide.

Anyway.

MOST Tags usually need a start tag and an end tag, like in <p>Sentence goes here</p> so that the Stuff (browser, webpage, etc) knows exactly where and what the Tag is affecting/targeting. The stuff between the Start and End is what the Tag affects. This is how OP selects the 'foreign language' (language that isn't the primary language the fic is written in) for the hover effect.

To make this hover effect, what OP is doing is taking advantage of an Attribute. In HTML, an Attribute is a kind of metadata for a tag. There are lots of attributes that all do different things.

The Title attribute is a kind of "Global" attribute, meaning it is largely usable across most all tags (with notable exceptions), and has a standard function which works in most cases.

The Title Attribute is used to log basic extra information about what is in the tag. It is often used for explaining abbreviations, naming conventions, and lots of other things. It's a very good attribute for this purpose!

A quick google search tells me that most screen readers can access and read this attribute, but again, I'm not experienced with screen reader accessibility so the nuances of this is not my wheelhouse.

I am aware that this sort of thing is exactly why accurate and clean tag/attribute choice is so important though...

Which brings me to why I recommend this change to OP's Idea:

The DIV tag and the SPAN tag are both kinds of tags which are used to segment out parts of a page. They are actually mirror pairs, of sorts, serving identical functions in different hierarchical niches.

In this, I think we have a very good start.

However

DIV tags are default Block display tags. In general, they are on the same rung of tag hierarchy as a <p> (paragraph) tag, which means (unless you are getting very fancy and have a technical reason to use DIV specifically), you do not want to use DIV for embedding information inside a preexisting paragraph.

In contrast, SPAN displays as Inline by default. To make a comparison, a <span> tag is much more alike to <i>, <b> <em> and <strong>: they are all tags which are meant to affect the text without disrupting the shape of how it is displayed, in-line with the rest of the paragraph.

Some of display issues OP is probably talking about would likely be solved by changing from DIV to SPAN. Most issues with display on AO3 have to do with how Rich Text ends up translating into HTML (re: badly, because richtext has a stupid amount of meta that is inconsistent from source program/app to source program/app and often confuses poor AO3's converter).

this is why i write everything in plaintext and hardcode my italics and bolds and such using html from the start

Anyway what I'm getting at is choosing the right Tag is super important, whether youre tagging your fic so readers can filter for it, or hard coding fun accessibility features into your fic <3

A Simple Trick for Fic Writers

Hey, if you're a fic writer and a character speaks in a different language, you don't just have to add the translation in the notes. Use the following HTML coding to add 'text on hover' to the word(s). If the reader is on a computer they can hover over the text to see the translation.

<div title="This is the text in the box!">This is the text that shows in your fic!</div>

Here are some examples from a fic on my AO3.

This coding here <div title="a fool, idiot (lit. emptyhead)">Eyn utreekov</div> will show this on hover.

This next example shows that you can add a lot of text. The formatting is the same as above.

PS: When doing this, there may be spacing issues, but you can edit the text through AO3's html or rich text editor. From there you can add italics (like I did), bold, etc, and fix any weird spacing issues. Just be careful not to delete the coding that you worked so hard on 😂
