You know, the point is... Well... I read a lot of sessrin ff just after having watched Yashahime because I was trying to see a sense in all that, but, really, even if you find that one 100% not problematic, still there's this lingering feeling that in order for things to make sense in a post-canon setting you have to pretend that what Rin and Sesshomaru had in Inuyasha (both manga and anime) wasn't a bond that deep, that Sesshomaru simply was around, never really acting as a father but how can you say so? And paradoxically: just a glance at sessrin fanbase and you'll find that everyone is fully convinced that their relationship was simply meant to end romantically. So... Apparently they do share a bond but sessriners have arbitrarily decided that this bond is not father/daughter because they dislike that. So Rin's ever been secretly in love with Sesshomaru and in turn somehow Sesshomaru himself was already hers, he just needed time to understand his own feelings. NO. NO! She is a child for God's sake. Of course she'll grow up but you can't just tell me that since one day she'll become a woman then Sesshomaru is her already written destiny. I mean, as if Inuyasha didn't show Sesshomaru regularly visit Kaede's village exclusively for Rin, making it clear that although she isn't anymore in his custody still he feels responsible for her. He still is her guardian/father and what is really weird about that specific fanbase is that while they claim there's no way sessrin implies grooming they actually do absolutely nothing to push away any possible ambiguity. Quite the contrary in fact.
They usually tag with "sessrin" even contents with child Rin (!)
Another of their fav arguments is: "Who else Rin could fall in love with? Sesshomaru is the hottest guy in town, do you honestly think any of those bumpkins around could stand a chance?".
All right, now I dare you to say that the person you are talking about is the real Rin and not someone else. Like... Uhm, yourself? Your subconscious mind which wants Sesshomaru? Because Rin certainly is not like that. She doesn't look down on people.
So, however stupid it may sound, yes, there are tons of sessrin fans who adores Yashahime, maybe the manga more just because there's a bit of romance, though, again, just like you said, no conflict between the two, no real growth, no real shifting in their relationship, nothing, nothing at all. And for them to be a couple, at the very very very least, you need to create some radical upheaval. I don't know, like, yes, something compelling Sesshomaru to stay away from Rin for a long, long time. Meanwhile Rin goes through her things too, she has her own life, some boyfriend, other experiences of adult life. Then when they are reunited they are kind of two strangers and as such forced to start things all over again.
But at the end of the day the thing is that even under these conditions... I still don't want that. If we talk about au/canon divergent stories well maybe yeah I'm in (though my biggest problem is that sessrin fanbase makes me sick and I don't want to have to do with it) but... I've already said this countless times at this point, what makes Sesshomaru and Rin so special to me is precisely that what they have involves no romantic feelings. It's just that I love too much girldad Sesshomaru. I love too much Rin as his baby daughter. I love the idea of Rin growing old and yet having a dad who still is young because Sesshomaru ages at a different speed, so that she will still be his little Rin as time goes by but at the same time older than her own father.
I just feel that... there are so many unexplored narrative possibilities about them.
Im so pissed off i hate yashahime the mere existance of it makes me frothing mad.

only because @senpujin asked (and definitely not because i can’t help myself)...
SHAYE’S THOUGHTS ON: the reunion (part 1)
there’s really only two ways to talk about trashahime - things that work and things that don’t make no fuckin’ sense. so those will be our categories for today’s class, kiddos.
THINGS THAT WORK:
- letting KAGOME get there first & alone
look i was WORRIED that, as they’ve been doing for almost 40 straight episodes, sunrise was just gonna lump inukag together as a single being and make this all happen at once. treating them as a single character and giving them identical responses. one big ole happy family hug and that’s it, you know? cause yes they’re married AF but they’re two separate people who, if written correctly god help us, would have two very different reactions to seeing moroha again.
largely because they have two VERY different emotional maturity levels but more on that later...
so imagine my shock but ELATION that kagome got there first & alone. that they’re actually gonna give BOTH parents their own time to shine. and i really appreciated the beautiful symmetry of kagome being the last one to hold moroha when they lost her and then the first one to hold her again when she’s returned to them
- kagome’s musical theme returning the MINUTE she hugged moroha
not much to say here other than BITCHHHHHH ... ok sunrise, you win. well played, that got me. my poor ass heart. the instant i heard that fuckin’ flute i was a sobbing mess.
- mama’s emotional speech :’)
my queen. my goddess. mama kagome. her huge heart and deep well of love were out in FULL ASS FORCE in that moment and it was perfection. she has always carried the heart and soul of the series on her back, the emotional anchor for the other characters to move around, and this moment is NO different. the VA for kagome deserves all the awards for this one, holy shit.
i actually really LIKED moroha’s initial awkwardness, and that she didn’t instantly hug her mother back. this is the first time in the show that ANYONE has hugged moroha, so it’s understandable that she’s unfamiliar and uncomfortable with such an open and vulnerable display of affection. ESPECIALLY one directed at her. ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY one centered in such a deeply personal and painful subject that moroha has been actively pushing away her entire life.
this speech gave moroha EXACTLY what she needed to hear - that her mother not only missed her, but that she was sorry. that she has ALWAYS been loved and her mother, without knowing the details of what has happened to her daughter, is devastated that she missed out on moroha’s life. for fuck’s sake, for all kagome knows in this moment, moroha had the BEST life living with the wolves - but she’s still sorry because SHE wasn’t there.
she is sorry that moroha was ALONE. she never wanted that for her child, never wanted that for their FAMILY, and it’s palpable in kagome’s anguished and repeated sobs. despite what was shown to her in the last fourteen years by her mentor and the corpse dealer, despite how she FELT? it turns out moroha has always been LOVED DESPERATELY. :”)
and it’s not until moroha hears this, takes it all in, that her happy tears come and she’s able to hug her mother back. able to ACCEPT this display of love, because she knows it’s real.
THINGS THAT DON’T MAKE NO FUCKIN’ SENSE:
- WHY kagome got there first & alone
what. the. fuck ??? this truly makes 0 sense. we see inukag rush off together at the sound of moroha & the twins crash landing into the gravesite, but then kagome arrives ALONE???
why was kagome running AT ALL ??? homegirl does not run; she is carried virtually everywhere like the queen she fuckin’ is by her husband. he’s 10x faster, it’s stupid and inefficient to let her human ass struggle to keep up. especially when THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT MADE THAT NOISE ??? you’re telling me that inuyasha, the man who no exaggeration has leapt to his certain death to protect kagome from the unknown about a billion times is just like ‘hey cool, no idea what that huge noise was but like, go on ahead all alone without your bow and arrows it’ll probably be fine see ya later’.
like ?!?!?!?!
but ALSO it makes no sense because ... if moroha can still remember kagome’s scent, when she last smelled it AS A LITERAL INFANT, then why doesn’t her fully grown adult father recognize hers the minute she lands ??? like we’ve established in canon that inuyasha’s nose can pick up on kagome’s scent from like, six football fields away - you’re telling me his ONLY CHILD’S scent is in the wind, one that smells like HIS and KAGOME’S mixed together, and this man doesn’t pick up on it ???
- kagome’s WILD initial reaction
bro i am hoping sunrise gives us some kinda explanation for this next weekend, like kagome’s been tortured with mirages of fake morohas for the last fourteen years or something because ...
that. was. STUPID.
truly, in my black heart of not trusting the writers, i think they couldn’t help themselves - moroha is their comic relief, and they somehow had to make this VERY EMOTIONAL moment funny. like there are MANY OTHER WAYS of showing kagome’s shock & disbelief that it’s actually her baby girl standing in front of her that aren’t her doing the ‘osuwari’ face and stomping over.
thanks, i hated it.
the SET UP for next week’s part 2 reunion
... if it already makes no sense that inuyasha didn’t smell moroha the minute she landed, it DEFINITELY makes no sense that he couldn’t smell her when she’s standing 25 feet away. again, like the kagome osuwari face thing - i GET it that they wanted to show how shocked moroha’s parents are to see her. that’s fine. that makes sense.
HOW they did it is fuckin’ stupid and makes no god damned sense.
bitch if anything, at the bare minimum, you know inuyasha could smell his wife SOBBING as he walked up. you’re really telling me that he smelled THREE NEW PEOPLE AFTER FOURTEEN YEARS ALONE (one of whom is his daughter hello???) AND KAGOME CRYING AND HE JUST STROLLS IN LIKE AIN’T SHIT GOING ON???
nah fam. nah. his ass would’ve been swinging tessaiga first and asking questions later. which, tb quite fuckin’ h, WOULD’VE BEEN A BETTER AND FUNNIER INTRODUCTION TO HIM THAN THIS BUG-EYED STARING CONTEST SHIT THEY DID INSTEAD !!!
anyways, i hate this show but i love the inufam. thanks for coming to my TEDTalk
#LOL anyone who read this whole thing gets a cookie#why am i like this ???#[i gotta go lay down] OOC SHIT

Teaser for Under the Northern Lights, Chapter 8: Stay
I CAN’T EVEN TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM TO SHARE THIS TEASER.
This is the moment for this story.
As in, one of the very first moments I imagined when I first came up with the idea for UTNL. Basically, everything that has happened so far in the story was just a lead up to this one scene I had imagined months ago.
This is a long ass teaser (almost 2k words), but this is going to be one of those ridiculously long chapters again, so it’s still only a small snippet. I have a feeling you guys won’t mind the length for this one 😉 .
This is still subject to light editing later on, even though I spent 3+ hours editing this one small section today because I am a crazy person.
Taglist (let me know if you want on or off!): @aelianadawn @alisanangel @alysssa-inukag @bluehawaiicat @born-for-eachother @deactivated2431545484 @goshinote @gruviyasharuto @inussunflower @julyzaa @keks-creations @ladyaerilla @littleredwritinghat @liz8080 @malditamigs @neutronstarchild @purplemys @redflamesofpassion @rocioanime4 @sailorlolo @sangoslays @sunsetskys @superpixie42 @theinuyashareader @zukkosbaby
Inuyasha smiled before standing up and walking to the coat hooks by the door. With the fire roaring, it was finally warm inside the cabin, making the coat he was still wearing feel like overkill.
Kagome watched as he shrugged off his jacket and hung it on one of the hooks, gasping when she saw what was underneath. Inuyasha’s sweater had been completely torn to shreds on his left side, dark red blood staining the frayed edges of the fabric.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome exclaimed, standing up abruptly.
“What?” Inuyasha asked, alarmed by her tone. Why did it sound like he was being reprimanded all of the sudden?
“You’ve been taking care of me this whole time when you have even worse injuries?!”
Kagome pointed to his side where his shirt was torn, starting to walk around the back of the couch so she could inspect his wounds. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Inuyasha looked down at where she was pointing, vaguely surprised to find his sweater in bloody tatters.
“Keh, this is nothing for someone like me. Just scratches,” he said nonchalantly, twisting a little as he inspected the wounds underneath. He brought his hands to his side to move the torn fabric out of the way, his mild surprise turning into annoyance.
“Sucks that this sweater got ruined though, I just bought it a few days ago.”
What a fuckin’ waste of money. Stupid wolves.
Inuyasha sighed a little, gripping the hem of the ruined sweater and pulling it off over his head. He walked around the breakfast counter to stand at the sink, balling up the sweater and throwing it in the trash along the way. Tearing a few paper towels from the roll on the counter, he wet them in the sink before starting to dab at the patches of blood on his torso.
All while Kagome stood transfixed, frozen in place, unable to stop her jaw from dropping.
Not only were his wounds already closing up on their own, but Inuyasha was now standing shirtless in front of her.
The man she felt more attracted to than all of the other men she had been with, combined.
Half-naked.
Right there.
And we’re completely alone…
It was a scenario she had envisioned since she first saw him in the daylight. Finding herself alone with him, getting to see the hidden planes of his body. It was something she had thought about in the shower in Denali, imagining his hands were the ones running across her body, instead of her own.
She had produced quite the detailed fantasy in her mind of what he might look like underneath the layers of clothing he typically wore, and yet, it couldn’t compare to real life.
He was so hot.
So ridiculously fucking hot.
She couldn’t even think of a more eloquent word to describe him, due to the fact that her brain had short circuited the moment his fingers slipped under the hem of his ruined sweater. It felt like she had been hit by a freight train of lust, rendering her utterly useless as she watched his large muscles rippling underneath his tawny skin.
It didn’t help that the position he was in only accentuated the very features that had her heart racing faster by the second. As he wiped the blood from his skin, his forearms and biceps flexed subtly, his well-defined abs tensing from the twisted position. Every last ripple and bulge was an ode to his strength, the raw power that had kept her safe.
The way he had protected and cared for her over the last week tapped into a primal, instinctual desire that she wasn’t even aware she had. An attraction to his chivalry and brawn and that was deeply ingrained in her subconscious, and only made her want him that much more.
She wanted to feel that smooth skin and solid muscle underneath her fingertips. To grip him as hard as she could while he surrounded her with that delicious body of his and she surrendered to him completely.
Kagome had to stop herself from letting out an audible whine as she watched several drops of water slide down his side, trailing down until they met the belted cargo pants that hung low on his hips.
She had to be in a movie.
Or a porno.
People don’t just look like that in real life.
Men don’t just show up, with adorable dog ears and chiseled jaws, and steal your heart in a matter of days. They don’t just appear out of nowhere at the last minute to save you from being eaten by wolves.
And they certainly don’t just casually undress in front of the person they had been flirting with for days like it was no big deal.
As if they hadn’t been about thirty seconds from fucking each other in the middle of a restaurant yesterday.
He seemed to have genuinely forgotten for the moment, not even looking in her direction as he inadvertently flaunted his body. Apparently, he had no inkling of the effect he was having on her.
Finally managing to tear her eyes from him, she turned away so as not to get caught staring. Her mind raced a mile a minute as she stood awkwardly near the front door, unsure of what to do with herself.
She knew he wanted her too, but where did they stand after everything that just happened in the last twenty-four hours?
He had just saved her life, risking his own in the process.
He had invited her into his home, something he claimed he had never done for anyone else before.
It was all so overwhelming that it felt wrong, in a way, to try and make a move on him right now. Especially when his mind was clearly not following the same train of thought at the moment.
She already felt like a voyeur for staring at him unabashedly when he had only been trying to clean up his wounds.
This was his home, a place where he probably felt safe and in control. He had to be the one to make the call. If he wasn’t thinking about finishing what had been set into motion two days ago, after everything that happened, then she couldn’t blame him.
Unfortunately, Kagome was losing any semblance of self-control by the second. The freight train was now off the tracks and barreling towards Inuyasha with no way of stopping it. If she didn’t leave now, there was no telling what she might do.
Inuyasha finished wiping the blood off his torso, the deep scratches he had sustained from fighting off the wolves already mostly healed over. He threw the blood-soaked paper towels into the trash, and was just about to go grab another sweater, when he stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes snapping to Kagome.
That scent...holy fuck.
He had caught whiffs of the delicious spicy-sweet addition to Kagome’s scent that indicated her arousal before. Most notably during the ending of that game of truth-or-dare, and last night when he spread her legs under the table at dinner.
It had been hard enough to keep himself in control those times, wanting nothing more than to give in to his desire and take her right there.
But now?
Her scent was stronger and smelled more delicious than any of those times before. He could already feel himself salivating in response, wanting to taste the sweetness of it on his tongue.
But what the hell had caused such a strong, sudden infusion of arousal into her scent? He looked around for clues, everything clicking into place as he realized that he was standing there half-naked, Kagome pointedly looking away from him. He could faintly hear her heart beating faster than usual, her cheeks flushed.
Kagome was smelling like that...from him taking his shirt off?
Well, that was certainly an ego boost.
He had done it without thinking, completely distracted by his wounds and every other fucking thing that had happened that night. He had been in “protect” mode, focused solely on dealing with the situation and making sure Kagome was okay. There had been no room in his mind for thoughts of the current state of their relationship, only the overwhelming need to ensure her safety.
But now...it was as if a switch had been flipped in his mind.
They were finally alone.
She was unharmed, and clearly wanted him.
She was...putting her boots back on like she was trying to leave?
Huh?
“Uh...Kagome? What’re you doing?”
Kagome still seemed unable to look at him as she picked up her camera bag.
“I should probably get going. I...want to check in on Miroku and Sango first thing tomorrow, and...you — you’ve already done so much for me, I don’t want to put you out any longer,” she said distractedly, fumbling over her words like she was trying to make up excuses as she went along.
Inuyasha stood dumbstruck and utterly confused, unable to come up with any kind of coherent response.
“Uh…”
He watched her secure the strap of her camera bag across her shoulder, trying to make sense of the disconnect between what his nose was telling him and the way she was acting. Her scent had only grown more potent in the moments since he first smelled it, but now she was acting as though she couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
What the fuck was going on?
Had he done something wrong?
Inuyasha walked around the breakfast bar, not sure what he was about to do, but needing to do something. He halted, standing in the middle of the cabin, when Kagome finally turned to look at him.
She looked even more beautiful than usual with her cheeks flushed, her eyes burning bright with the same desire as her scent.
“Thank you, again, for everything, Inuyasha. I’ll see you tomorrow at noon.”
Her voice was quiet and sincere, if not a bit shaky. She smiled warmly at him, giving no indication that he had done anything wrong.
Every sign pointed to her wanting him.
But, if she wanted him, then why was she leaving?
Unless she thought he had changed his mind since last night?
Inuyasha watched her turn towards the door and reach for the handle as if in slow motion, her long black hair sliding over her shoulders. She was wearing his sweatpants, and for some reason, it was the sexiest thing in the world.
And that fucking scent of hers was driving him absolutely wild.
There was no way he could let her walk out that door.
Gathering all the confidence he could muster, he spoke clearly and loudly enough to get her attention.
“Or…”
Kagome’s hand froze on the doorknob, turning her head slightly towards him in a clear indication that she was listening.
Inuyasha’s next words were quieter, his voice trembling a little despite his best attempt at confidence.
“...you could stay.”
#inukag#utnl#under the northern lights#thank you Jane for looking this over as always!! 😘#hoping to get the full chapter out by next Friday#but we'll see how it goes#i'm trying my best!!

......I said it was coming.
And now I can say that the rough draft is finished.
Hope to have it up on my Patreon by the end of the week!!
And....Just because....
He took another swig from the bottle, and a little bit of the whiskey within dribbled down his chin. He roughly wiped it off with the back of his hand, thrusting the bottle back out at Sesshomaru.
“Here,” he growled, trying to latch onto the anger. If he was angry, he wasn’t sad. And if he was sad, he would start to remember all the things he loved about her. He needed to focus on the hate instead. The confusion and betrayal...
He didn’t get it. He never had.
He had fucking done everything for her that he could think of...and it wasn’t e-fucking-nough for her. She still tossed him to the side...and she never even really told him why.
Fine.
Whatever.
Pretend he didn’t matter. Pretend he was insignificant and nothing.
Pretend that this wasn’t a special week. That it should have been special.
Be normal, Kagome.
Go live your best, fucking god damn life, because he didn’t fucking matter. He didn’t exist. Their ten years of friendship...of dating...of fucking togetherness didn’t fucking matter.
“Inuyasha…” his brother soothed, placing a hand on his shoulder, and Inuyasha realized for the first time that he had been growling.
“Sorry,” he mumbled, grabbing the bottle back from Sesshomaru without waiting to be offered it.
Sesshomaru was quiet for a few minutes, letting only the sound of the crickets and the crackling fire break the silence between them, before finally he asked, “What do you mean by “they look like they’re having a grand old time”, Inuyasha?”
“Nothing,” he grumbled, taking another sip. “Meant nothing by it, Sessh.”
“Alright then,” Sesshomaru nodded, watching him take yet another sip. “But...If you had…”
“It’s nothing.”
“Alright.”
The clearing filled with the sound of the crickets and the fire once more, and in the distance, Inuyasha heard a coyote’s cry. He wondered what it was looking for. It’s family? Was it trying to find its way home?
Fuck, he wanted to find his way home too. He wanted a home again. He wanted to be loved like he had been...He wanted to belong with another person like he had once belonged with her.
Inuyasha rubbed his eyes as his mind began to fog. Perhaps he should slow down...But why? It’s not like he had anyone waiting for him when he got home. Hadn’t had anyone in…
Five fucking years.
She looked so damn sexy. Had turned into such a beautiful woman…
“How do you know that?”
Inuyasha hadn’t realized that he’d said that aloud...And maybe it was the liquor. Maybe it was just poor judgement...but he took his phone out of his pocket and showed Sesshomaru Sango’s Facebook page. There they were. Bikinis, martinis, and sunshine. Maybe not martinis. Fuck, he didn’t know. It was hard to think.
Or getting harder to think.
Fuck, it didn’t matter...Nothing mattered. He just wanted more, and he took another swig from the bottle.
“Saw that earlier when I was trying to go to sleep. Couldn’t...didn’t mean to...I just…”
“You don’t need to explain,” Sesshomaru shrugged, so he didn’t.
“Least I didn’t start reading her shit again?” he joked lightly, but Sesshomaru didn’t look amused. It was like his own personal hell. Whenever he really started missing her...Started to want to be around her, or smell her or…Didn’t matter. Didn’t matter what he wanted. Because he didn’t. Because if she was over him, he was over her. But...On days when he was...Perhaps a little less over her than he should be…
Those were the days that he would find those articles and read. He could practically hear them in her voice...and...just for a moment...he felt closer to her again. He felt the ache in his chest ease a little. And...well...As stupid as it was...
Just for that one moment…
He had Kagome again.
Sesshomaru tapped on something on his phone, and suddenly he was hearing her voice.
Inuyasha looked over his shoulder to see that there was apparently more than just a picture. There was a fucking video.
“Kagome!” Sango called, pulling her friend to her as music blared in the background. “Dance with meeee!” she whined, pointing the camera at the other woman...wrapped in another man’s arms.
The fucking cat.
Weren’t enough she went and left him...Now she was dating a fucking cat demon. He didn’t know what was worse. The fact that she was with a cat...or that he wasn’t a fucking half breed like him. He was a real pretty boy too. Golden, patrick dempsey hair...green eyes...high feline cheek bones.
And the fucking ears.
She always had a thing for ears.
He closed his eyes as he heard the man tease Sango about trying to take his girl from him, but Kagome went to her nonetheless, and soon they were singing along to Party in the USA. Faces screwed up, arms waving in the air as Zach took the phone from them and recorded their shenanigans for them.
He couldn’t do this. He couldn’t hear how happy she was. Couldn’t watch her with another man like that. He wasn’t strong enough for that right now. He couldn’t…
He needed it to stop.
He needed it all to just stop. Just for a minute. Just…
Just...
“Stop it, Sessh. Please.”
He normally would have been ashamed of the way that his voice cracked, but he didn’t care. He just...Just…
He found himself in Sesshomaru’s arms, his head resting on his shoulder as his brother silently held him, allowing him to screw his eyes up and take deep, shuddering breaths. ‘Cause he weren’t gonna cry over her again. He wasn’t gonna let himself.
He had promised himself that, and he was gonna make good on it.
“It’s ok,” Sesshomaru, rumbled softly, and he broke. The damn in his soul was released, and with it came the floods.
He soaked his brother’s shirt as his hell replayed itself in his mind over and over again. The video. Her smile. Their break up.
“I can’t...I can’t marry you, Yash...I’m...I’m so sorry...I just...I can’t…”
Yash.
Fucking hated that name now.
“It’s ok,” Sesshomaru, murmured again, continuing to rub his back. “Let it out, Inuyasha. Let it all out.”

Fun fact about my newest WIP, Lost Time: I wrote most of the first chapter while I was drunk and got way too excited about finishing a chapter of anything that I posted it before editing it sober 🙈. I just finished writing the second chapter of the story and will have it edited and posted by the end of the weekend or early next week. That being noted, I wanted to repost the edited version here for your viewing pleasure. I’ll be making a separate post with a preview for chapter two shortly!
It’s been updated on AO3 and Fanfiction.Net as well!
Kagome found her gaze fixated on her high school uniform which sat neatly in the back of a blue locker. Soft shadows hugged the navy and beige fabric as a soft sound—almost like white noise or static—seemed to embrace her thoughts. Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes, Kagome reached out and grabbed her clothes. Exhaling slowly, she turned away from the locker so that when she opened her eyes nothing would have changed.
It was hard to believe that a year had passed since the Bone Eater’s Well stopped working. Like a catalyst, the broken connection between her time and InuYasha’s changed so much about Kagome without having to change itself. Her attendance soared, her old lifestyle came slamming into her weekdays, her acquired fear of the darkness felt like a slow burn even though it wasn’t, and now she had invented ways to carry the consequences.
Even though her friends in the Feudal Era were alive and well, they weren’t here. Kagome supposed she was grieving but she felt as if she should be... happier. Miroku’s wind tunnel must have vanished so he and Sango were probably married with a child on the way. Shippo was probably having a lot of fun staying in the village and playing with kids his own age while InuYasha... everyone always said that he was restless in the village, but Kagome liked to think he was somewhat happy. Not that happy and InuYasha often mixed, but Naraku and the Sacred Jewel were defeated, he should at least be able to relax.
The young high schooler sighed, imagining InuYasha asleep on her bed. He always appeared angelic especially when a soft pink comforter acted as an unintentional backdrop. But once he was awake, he and Shippo could easily tie for the title of “Most Mischievous.” Remembering the stories Gramps told her about how he ran circles around the table left Kagome hoping that, at the very least, her half-demon companion wasn’t driving the villagers insane.
“Higurashi!” Yua Watanabe, the archery club’s captain, called out with a slight wave.
Kagome dropped her hands from the ties of her hakama, offering her senior a soft, “Hi, Watanabe.”
As Watanabe approached, Kagome gulped, attempting to swallow the idea of InuYasha. “Thanks for all of your hard work this year. I’m really glad you joined the club!” Yua exclaimed with a carefree ease that Kagome envied.
“Thank you; being able to do archery is important to me.”
Yua nodded a few times in agreement, not at all able to comprehend the meaning behind Kagome’s remark. She continued talking, also unaware of how Kagome’s thoughts about the past crawled back past her throat to nestle in her mind. She never asked to leave her double life behind, was never given a chance to choose.
“Oh, and we’re really looking forward to having you start training to compete next year. I know you’ll do well!”
Kagome flashed Yua another modest smile but before she could thank her for a second time, she yawned. “Excuse me,” Kagome apologized. Another large yawn stretched at her consciousness. “I’m just going to go to bed now...”
The world returned to Kagome slowly. She blinked her eyes against an overwhelming amount of deep browns and warm oranges. The ceiling above almost looked like the wood roofing of a hut and the unmistakable popping fire and chirping crickets sounded like a lullaby. It’s almost like I’m back in the Feudal Era, she thought to herself as she yawned. Just as she was about to turn and settle back into sleep, she heard him.
“You’re awake.”
InuYasha’s voice sent Kagome lurching forward, all thoughts of sleep vanishing instantly. “InuYasha!” she exclaimed, her heart beating as quickly as her head spun. The high schooler clutched at her chest with uncertainty, brown eyes daring to take in the telltale colors of silver and amber. She spent so many days longing for them to come into view.
“Hey,” InuYasha began, resting his hands on her shoulders. When—how did I come back? Kagome asked herself as she reached up to grasp one of the half-demon’s hands. She never realized that his calloused skin could feel like a balm, working without delay to relieve this past year’s emotional build up. InuYasha was seated properly before her, his face highlighted by firelight and grounded by a somber expression.“You shouldn’t be pushing yourself right now. Kaede said you should rest.”
Kagome’s eyes had to be shining as he—InuYasha!— gingerly lowered her down to the floor. She could feel moisture building bridges across her waterline, too. Of course there were so many questions she needed to blurt out, but watching InuYasha pull a thin blanket up past her shoulders stilled her. Kagome was just happy he was here. He felt so real; his touch, the timbre of his voice—everything about this InuYasha. If she was dreaming, she didn’t want to wake up. “I can’t believe you came for me,” Kagome croaked out because she always knew that he would.
“Of course I did, stupid,” InuYasha chided, crossing his arms. A small giggle filtered past Kagome’s lips as he turned up his nose. When the schoolgirl fantasized about her reunion with InuYasha, he never acted this casual. They spent a little more than a year apart from each other for the first time since they met and it was entirely too long. Had she not been so wrapped up in her own emotions, Kagome may have chastised him back. “Would have been easier for me to do that if you stayed hidden instead of charging out of the brush like that. You could’ve gotten seriously hurt, Kagome.”
Kagome furrowed her brow slightly at the comment. “What?” She asked, wiping away a tear with her index finger.
InuYasha thrust his nose even further in the air. “Keh, don’t play innocent; damn ogre’s club wasn’t that hard, I was fine.”
Kagome frowned as his words sunk in. “I...” She brought a hand to her temple, rubbing it lightly as she tried to process what the half-demon told her.
All traces of agitation scurried from InuYasha’s features at her motion. “Kagome, is your head bothering you? Kaede gave me some medicine to help with that, let me get it for you.”
Before he could walk away, Kagome grabbed at his pants, instantly stilling him. “Kagome...?”
“Where’s Kaede?”
“‘Dunno,” InuYasha shrugged. “She probably went home or somethin’.” Lightly shaking her hand away, he walked to the fire to settle the kettle over its steady flames.
So InuYasha has his own hut and he wants me to stay, Kagome thought to herself. A molten smile spread, matching the warm blush she was sure dusted her cheeks.
Kagome rolled to her side to watch InuYasha as he babysat his kettle. Everything from the painted scowl to the delicate way he mixed tea was deliberate and when he was beside her once more, she pulled herself into a sitting position effortlessly. As he passed her the cup, his hands lingered against hers. It was glaringly clear that InuYasha wanted to pick up where they had left off a few weeks before they defeated Naraku. Still, Kagome couldn’t help but laugh slightly, not used to an InuYasha who was anything but abrasive. “You’ve sure grown up some,” she pointed out, tilting her head to the side.
“Uh...” InuYasha replied, breaking their contact to shove his hands into the voluminous red sleeves of the fire rat. “You uh, really hit your head there, didn’t ya?” Kagome frowned again—hit her head? Didn’t listen to him? She was missing something but before she could even ask, InuYasha was grasping her free hand and squeezing it tightly. “Listen, when I told you to stay hidden, it was only because I knew I could handle that dumb-ass ogre on my own. I should have been paying more attention to you, though. You’re still learning and I—I should have protected you. I’m sorry.”
Kagome shook her head as InuYasha bowed his own. He wanted forgiveness when absolutely nothing he admitted happened to them. Kagome wriggled her hand from InuYasha’s and winced, rubbing her forehead again. “Are you real?” She nearly whispered, tears forming once more. Kagome was used to the dreams—it would be so easy for him to deny it or stumble over his words or maybe just admit that all of this was another fantasy. But when she saw the anxiety accumulating across every aspect of her half-demon’s body, Kagome had a feeling that she really was awake. “It’s just that I—“ she cut herself off. She needed to stand and maybe get fresh air or something. The world quickly spun beneath her feet but InuYasha was there, catching her and he was really there—they were really together. “Oh InuYasha,” she stated, closing her eyes and letting the tears glide past her cheeks.
InuYasha froze the moment she buried her head against his chest, but it didn’t take long for him to wrap his arms around her. “I’m supposed to be the one who’s upset,” he reminded her, hands softly stroking her hair. “You’re really starting to worry me, Kagome.”
Kagome shook her head, lifting her dewy eyes up with a sense of relief she thought would never materialize.
InuYasha was different than she remembered and yet exactly the same. Just being around him set her at ease and she could feel some of her anxieties fade away. Kagome was safe now, but even as she calmed to sniffles, InuYasha continued running his hand up and down her back, he radiated a peace she hadn’t expected after being apart for an entire year. “How can you be so calm?”
InuYasha’s brow twitched slightly and he raised a fist, it was almost as if Kagome unintentionally spiked his ire. All she could do was tilt her head to the side. “Because Kaede said that being upset wouldn’t help you relax. She didn’t tell me it would make you worry more,” he ground out. If InuYasha could trade a gentle reaction for an angry one within seconds, Kagome knew absolutely that she was in the Feudal Era again.
“It’s been such a hard year without you, InuYasha, why on Earth wouldn’t I want you to feel something? Did you even miss me?”
“The hell are you talking about, Kagome?”
Well, it was good to know that InuYasha could still unintentionally spark her ire, too. “My life has been absolutely miserable without you!” She blurted out, pressing an accusatory finger against his chest. “Do you have any idea how difficult things have been for me? And now you’re just standing here like... like you haven’t even thought about me on—“ Kagome groaned, her head glaringly protesting her argument.
InuYasha reached out, cupping her cheeks in his hands. “Kagome, take it easy,” he advised, and she could hear the note of concern in his voice despite how stern it was. She glared up at him. He offered her a crooked smile that quickly faded. “Wait, did you say it’s been a year since the well stopped working?”
“I mean, I think so...” Her temper fled, leaving her feeling sheepish. Maybe her memories were a little off.
InuYasha placed a finger under her chin, tilting her up to look into a storm of amber. “You were gone for three years.”
InuYasha sounded as if the news might break her and it didn’t but Kagome couldn’t hold back a slight gasp. She stepped back from him. “Three...” three whole years—she had to wait two more years to be reunited with InuYasha and her friends here? It didn’t seem plausible.
“What’s the last thing you remember?” InuYasha asked, picking Kagome up then laying her back down onto the ground. Although he was trying his best to remain calm, she could tell he was upset.
Kagome swallowed the lump in her throat, reaching her hand out to lay against his thigh. “I just finished my first year of high school,” she confessed. “What happened to me?”
InuYasha rested his hand on her arm. “We were fighting an ogre on the outskirts of the village ‘n it threw you against the ground.”

Sometimes life got him down… But he’d had hundreds of years to cope with that. His human companions, however, always seemed to take their failure harder. Even when the blame should always fall on him.
He was the strongest and oldest in the pack. It made him the alpha. Their setbacks were his own.
Yea, don’t get him wrong. He took defeat and loss hard. But there’d always be a new day. Unless you were dead. And if you lived to tell the tale, then fuck, why stay depressed about it?
What killed him more than anything though was seeing a young woman that had stolen his heart upset about anything. She blamed herself for shattering the jewel, causing all the death, destruction…
But it wasn’t her fault. Not really. Sure he blamed her, called her names, made her feel guilty about the whole mess; but in reality, it was his fault. If he hadn’t had been such a jackass to her, calling her names, making her feel ugly, being an immature asshole--she wouldn’t have run away. She wouldn’t have been caught, and the crow demon wouldn’t have gotten a hold of the jewel. Even then, if he had been more encouraging, patient, maybe they would have been able to recover the jewel together before she shot it out of the sky.
But no. He was a fucking jerk. He should have seen from the moment she crashed down in front of him when she was being chased by the nasty ass centipede that she wasn’t Kikyo. She was nothing like her in terms of spirit, spunk, demeanor, and even as time went on--she looked less and less like her. Her beauty was far more natural; just like she was. She wasn’t overbearingly poised, stiff, cold. Kagome overflowed radiance and kindness. Kikyo had been a beautiful, untouchable woman… But Kagome was gorgeous. Kind. Warm. Everything Kikyo had not been, Kagome was.
He thought he had loved Kikyo; but he was a fool. He had no idea what love really was after traveling with Kagome. Having her care for him. Talk to him. Touch him as if he wasn’t tainted. No one had ever tried to rub his ears, hold his clawed hands, hold him when he was ready to cave in on himself… that was until Kagome came along. She made it bearable to be a half-demon in this fucked up world. She made it alright to be himself.
Seeing her hang her head down from another destroyed village they hadn’t made it in time to save, her likely hearing Sango’s quiet comments about how she was glad she never saw her village in such disarray, Miroku’s musings about how anyone would do anything to get the jewel shards…
He wanted to fucking strangle them, but no--she wouldn’t let him. Originally he growled at them, but she soothed him and plastered her fake caring smile on her face. Then proceeded to ask him to help them lay the villagers to rest. He was hopeless to tell her no--well, after a few mutters of annoyance. He had an image to maintain, after all.
It wasn’t until into the night when the fire burned low, the stars shined brightly, and the full moon illuminated the land from high in the sky that he heard her sleeping bag ruffle. He looked down to see his delicate pale beauty look around the campsite. What was she looking for?
He caught her shift her gaze up to him. Since he was a coward, he pretended to be asleep. Some more shuffling sounds followed by footsteps had him open his eyes. Seriously, what the fuck was she doing??
Jumping from tree to tree as quietly as possible, he saw her walk out into an open field and sit. She was just gazing up at the stars…
He remembered one of the first times they did that together. The idea of staring at them was stupid--why bother? They didn’t move. They held no real purpose.
But Kagome said they learned a lot about them in her time; how they change from season to season, how they can be used for directions when they knew what season it was. Some had special names, different stories. Legends. Myths. She said after learning demons were real, who knows if those stories were actually as fictional as they had originally been meant to be?
The fascination was still slightly lost on him until she mentioned with the pollution of her time that it made them harder to see unless you were out in more ‘rural’ areas. Places without villages. Like here. She said she loved to look at them--with people who were special to her.
The speech wasn’t lost on him, even though he acted like it was. He knew he was important to her. How could he not be? She didn’t go to school as much, spent most of her time here even though she had a life on the other side of the well…
Even though she said it was to fix her mistakes, he knew that wasn’t the only reason. Or at least he had hoped it wasn’t until he heard her cry out for him when Hakudoshi held her heart.
Confirming, definitely a good piece of it belonged to him. But… he still had no idea what he could offer her? His harsh words and attitude? The fire-rat robe off his back? His father’s sword that held in his demonic blood?
She deserved to have a choice. If she did so happen to choose to stay with him once the jewel was once again complete, without knowledge of his feelings, he’d tell her. He’d build her a hut--if the village accepted them. Fuck, even if they had to live in a cave, he’d still consider himself the luckiest man in all the lands.
He’d do anything for her; and that was why he had to remain silent until there was no jewel driving her mission.
Looking at the back of her didn’t help him figure out what was wrong with her, though. The wind shifted and stirred those wavy ebony locks. Along with the scent that was so Kagome, he smelled a twinge of salt…
She was crying.
Of course she snuck away, so she didn’t wake up her friends… or him.
He jumped down from his tree and walked over to her. She didn’t flinch or move her position from staring up at the sky. Obviously she had been aware of his presence. Her power has certainly grown since she first arrived now. She could clearly pick out different reiki, youki, jyaki, and the jewel shards.
What couldn’t his girl do? Of course he referred to her as his girl; who else would be his? Even if she happened to choose to leave, he doubted he would ever find another as giving, kind, caring, loving, and beautiful as Kagome. Maybe in a couple centuries; but even then he’d likely try and find his way back to her when she was born. See when she grew up if she’d want to try again… But he would also just be happy to be her friend. Why would he get in the way of her happiness? Of her life? He may have been a selfish bastard for now, keeping her from her friends and family, but they had a mission. He had the right to be an ass… Demand the time from her until it was over. Because God forbid she did choose to leave, he’d die from not having spent more time with her.
“Hi,” she said softly.
“Hey… what’s uh--what’s going on?”
“Just thinking,” she sighed, closing her eyes. Fuck. Why was she so goddamn pretty? Even sitting there, tears trickling down her flushed cheeks, hair blowing with the breeze, and he couldn’t stop looking at her. She was mesmerizing.
“Yea? Care to elaborate? Or ya just gonna keep cryin’ over nothing?” He asked as he plopped down next to her. Jerkface on. Ready to push her to fight with him so that the tears would stop. Maybe even let his face eat the dirt. After a good sit she was usually somehow in a better mood from releasing her anger.
“Sigh…” She opened her eyes and looked at the stars again before she finally shifted her eyes back to him. “I just… I’m stupid. That’s all.”
“Why you say that? You’re the one with all the book learning and crap. You’re probably one of the smarter ones out of our group,” he pointed out. Then he realized he said something nice. Fuck. He was deviating from his plan… But she just looked so broken. Damn. Shit. He had to comfort her; at least that’s what the demon demanded. The human in him was screaming to run and hide and protect her from himself.
Nice. Two very opposing sides fighting in his mind. No wonder being a confusing asshole came so naturally.
“It’s just… You all have lost so much. Some because of me, some not. But still, I feel like I let this get to me… More than it should. I’m able to go home and see my family. Separate myself from all of this and you guys--can’t.
“I’m just pathetic for letting this get to me. I’m just so useless and.. Weak. You were right.”
Before he could think the better of it, he stretched his arm out and hugged her shoulders tightly. “No. I was wrong. So far from wrong. You’re probably the strongest out of all of us, Kagome.”
“Do-Don’t--”
“Don’t what?? Just say shit? I’m not for once. Yea, I know I don’t always think. Especially back then when we first met, first starting traveling together… I know, Kagome. I know I was an asshat. The biggest bastard of them all. I just…”
“Inuyasha, I understand,” she soothed, turning to face him. Her calves were pressed to his thigh now. Without thinking, he pulled her up into his lap.
“Inu--”
“I’m sorry.”
“W-What??”
“Your insecurities--your fears… They’re my fault. I’m to blame.”
“No--stop. Inuyasha I understand why you said those things… It wasn’t because you meant them--not exactly, anyway. You said them out of malice. You were hurt. You were scared to be hurt again by someone who looked exactly like the woman who had literally ripped your heart in two. I get it. I learned you didn’t mean half of what you said. You just said that stuff to protect yourself…”
“Kagome…” How was it possible this woman knew him better than anyone? Was that even fair? Did he know her just as well?
“I know you had a rough life. I’ve seen it. You’ve only warned me time and time again when we’ve gone into villages, stayed out in the woods at night, hunted the jewel shards, even asked our friends to join us. I get it. In the sense that you are the way you are because of it. But I also see through to the real you. I see you for who you really are Inuyasha.”
“You don’t gotta tell me. I know you do…” His claws brushed through her hair and she started to relax further into his hold.
“Inuyasha?”
“What?”
“What are you doing?”
“I don’t know… Am I not doing something right?”
Her giggle emerged and he felt the tension in his own body leave. Clearly he was doing okay making her feel better, “I think you’re doing just fine--you just have never… I mean you don’t usually--”
“Everyone needs a different form of comfort, Kagome. Sango usually just needs a pep talk or she needs to just not be groped by that fucking pervert. Miroku has to be joked with or threatened. Shippo… well there ain’t much that gets him down that your fuckin’ pokey won’t fix. Kirara is never sad unless she doesn’t get fish.”
“What about you? How can I--” she turned to face him and her lip snuck its way in between her teeth. “How can I comfort you?”
“By being you. You’ve stayed by my side when you shouldn’t have. You’ve held me even after I slaughtered humans without a second thought. It’s second nature to you, Kagome… You--You don’t know how grateful I am to have you here… even though I don’t show it like I should,” he mumbled the last words hoping she wouldn’t hear the mushy words exit his mouth.
“And you… comfort me how…?” Her eyes with glistening and twinkling like the damn stars. Fuck. Did he mention how beautiful she was? And how unfair her proximity fucked with his head? Was she… what was she asking for? He heard her heart beating erratically. Her face was blushing--but not from crying now. Her scent told a different story. It was one of desire. Want. Need. Fuck.
He wasn’t thinking as he leaned in and closed the distance between their mouths. His lips brushed hers lightly at first, testing to see if she would ultimately reject him like everyone else. But fuck--no, she pressed back harder. Damn; she was ruining his plans.
He pulled back slightly before the kiss got more heated and looked deeply into her lust covered eyes. Damnit. He felt a particular body part rising with her scent and the nonverbal cues she was sending out.
“Kagome--”
“Please--just for tonight--I don’t want to be second. Tomorrow we can just move on but tonight can it just be us?”
“What?” And his dick was under control again. Her words triggered something in his brain to settle the fuck down. “What do you mean ‘second’?”
“I know--I know you don’t care about me like that. And that’s okay. You don’t have to. I know you’re in love with Kikyo. I know you want the jewel. I know you want to avenge Kikyo’s death and the betrayal Naraku caused between the two of you. I get it. I understand. I just-- for tonight can it just be us? No Kikyo? No Naraku? No jewel?”
“Kagome that’s not--”
“Inuyasha--” She leaned in and tried to kiss him again but he pulled back. Here he said she was smart and she actually was the dumbest of them all…
What kind of horse shit was she spewing?
“No--what the fuck, Kagome?! You think you’re fucking second to all those things?!?!”
“Inuyasha shush! We’re not that far from--”
“Shut up! Answer me! You honestly think I put those other things first before you?!”
“Well obviously!! The minute there’s a soul collector you’re out of here! The moment you catch Naraku’s scent, you’re gone! And don’t forget why I’m even here to begin with!! I shattered the jewel! The jewel you want!!”
“Don’t give me that crap Kagome; you and I both know while yea, we kinda need help being able to see and sense the jewel shards I need you. I. Need. You. You. Not Kikyo, not Miroku, not Sango… YOU. Do you have any idea what kind of person I would be--fuck--what kind of person I was before you came along?! I only have friends because of you. I only have been trusted by villages because of you. Kagome… God you’re everything for me. You’ve given me so much without even fucking trying.
“I get I am a bastard. I know I’m an asshole through and though but come on--you have to know by now, after everything we’ve fucking been through that I want you by my side. That when you aren’t here--it’s just empty. Don’t even act like you don’t know what I do when you’re gone. I’ve heard the slayer and monk tell you. Even fucking Shippo rats me out for the right price. Kagome--how can you be so fuckin’ blind??”
“Inuyasha--”
“I’m not done talking, wench; so shut the fuck up and listen. Kikyo--Kikyo is dead. I know that. I know there honestly isn’t a way to save her. The feelings I have for her--they revolve around guilt and remorse. But even looking back at what could have been--it never would have worked Kagome. We didn’t trust each other. We were two of loneliest people in the world and drew on each other for comfort.
“What you and I have… Fuck Kagome. Even just as friends, we have such a--shit. Kagome, I’ve never had friends. Even my only family hates my guts. You were my first friend. The first person to trust me with your life. Do you even know what that means to me??”
“Inuyasha…” Luckily she was drawn out of her little spiraling depressive shell she had put around herself. Maybe they should have had this talk years ago…
“Kagome--with Naraku--fuck. He wants to hurt me. He wants me to die mentally; physically he probably couldn’t give a shit. But he wants me to suffer for whatever reason. Do you know how he would succeed in that?”
“I--”
“By taking you away from me. Kagome--don’t you get it?”
“Inuyasha--just--just say it. Please,” she whispered.
“I love you, dumbass,” he finally said. Breathlessly. Because the air from his lungs had whooshed out of his body. Because every fucking promise he made to her, made himself just went out the window. Typical. His mouth always did end up running away from him. But he couldn’t believe she had thought she was so low on the totem pole… how could she honestly believe that he didn’t care about her? That he’d fucking use her body like that?
Mating was a serious thing in inuyoukai culture. Fuck--even in this era women didn’t typically go opening their legs to just anyone. Yea, things were different in her time but goddamn--he was not going to allow her to do that to him. To her even. If she wanted to be with him, it would be a lifetime commitment. Once he had her, he was too selfish to ever let her go.
“Inuyasha--I--”
“I’m not gonna just rut you and leave you. That’s not how this would go, Kagome. That’s not who I am. Don’t you think I have a little more honor than that? Don’t you think even as a friend I care about you more than that??”
“I’m sorry…” she said, her voice disheartened.
“Damn right you should be sorry! If we do this--this is a lifetime commitment. Not your lifetime; mine.”
“What??” She said looking up at him in shock.
“Inuyoukai mate for life--”
“But your dad--”
“My old man rutted Sesshomaru’s mom for a powerful heir. I’m not lookin’ for someone to take over my land. Fuck--I have a fucking forest the villagers named after me in fear that I would one day wake.”
“But--”
“Yea, he mated with my mom and he died. Shit happens. But she had me to love and protect and raise. The mate bond only affects the demon in the relationship as far as if you got hurt and died, then I would. Not the inverse. What would happen for you is that it would wear off and you’d begin to age like normal.”
“Are you… Are you asking me to be your mate?”
“God, you’re slow,” he smirked lightheartedly.
She glared at him, “Inuyasha… This isn’t a joke.”
“I’m aware of that; it also isn’t a tryst.”
“Touche… So… Uhm--where--where would we live? When this was all over?”
“Whatever village would take us. Or a cave. Wilderness. Seems like the more likely option.”
“What about my era?” He gave her a look of ‘Yea--with my ears?’ “Oh, you’re-you’re right. It wouldn’t work…”
“Look, I wasn’t--I wasn’t trying to make you choose. You can take all the time you need. I wasn’t gonna say anything until the jewel was whole and we figured out what to do with it. We can just go slow--I can court you and--”
“Inuyasha; I love you too. I don’t want to ever be without you. If I didn’t want to be here, yes it would eat me up inside because I was the one who broke the jewel but I want to be with you; by your side. Kikyo could have taken my spot… If--If we had to live in a cave, forest, wherever I’d be alright. I’d still be with you.”
“Are you sure about this Kagome? There aren't any take backs on this kind of thing…”
“Now who is doubting whom?” She tilted her head frowning slightly.
“Whatever, wench,” he replied with no bite. “Forever is just a long time to not think about this. I swore I’d protect you; that includes myself. You might not realize what being mated to half-breed means.”
“I don’t understand what you mean; is there… other stuff we’d have to do or--”
“You’ll be called the demon’s bitch. The half-demon’s slut. Anything you’ve ever heard thrown at me, they’ll be hurled at you.”
“I don’t care about what people think about me. I care about what you think… Will you think those things of me?”
“Kagome!! What the fuck--?!”
“See? Of course you won’t. Neither will our friends…” She trailed off and looked slightly uncomfortable and her scent shifted.
“What are you worried about?”
“You--You may not love Kikyo like you used to… but--”
“Sigh… it’s been a long time coming for that conversation. She does know how I feel about you. That’s another reason she doesn’t press to travel with us. The last time we met, she had asked if I had told you yet, that was awkward,” he said blushing, letting his ears fall flat on his head. The embarrassment was worth it when he heard laugh lightly and felt her cold hand on his ear. Fuck. He secretly loved it when she would just brush his ears in passing. But it seemed the secret was out… Because an unbridled rumble erupted from his chest. Damnit.
“Are you purring?” She asked, smiling mischievously.
“NO! I DO NOT PURR!”
“Sure--sure,” she agreed with undeniable amusement laced in her voice as she continued to rub his ears. Feeling the other effects it was having on him, he reached up and paused her ministrations.
“You’re--You’re gonna have to stop.”
“Why?” Oh, poor sweet innocent Kagome… He conveyed a face that hopefully told her what he honestly didn’t want to confess out loud. Unfortunately, he was pretty sure the piece of anatomy that was now poking into her side. It had the inverse effect though; her scent spiked again.
Fuck she was like a drug. He already knew he had no hope in separating from her; but she obviously held no reservations. She wanted what he did. Even more so maybe. She had been willing to just have him for a night. Claiming she was being the selfish one. Bullshit. If anyone was selfish, it was him.
He slowly leaned in again but paused just a breath away to wait for her to close the distance. While he was selfish, he wanted this to ultimately be her choice. He had already made his. It was her. Always her.
Luckily, or thankfully, whichever it was, she closed the gap between them and kissed him. Fuck he was a goner. He loved her. Everything about her. From her eyes, to her voice, to her sweet honey flavored tongue shoved into his mouth brushing against his fangs, her breasts he was squeezing through her sleep shirt, her kind personality, her overflowing love-- he could go on and on.
When she pulled back he was taken by surprise, which wasn’t an easy feat. Especially when her legs were straddling his hips. He opened his eyes which he hadn’t even realized had closed and saw her shred her pink tank top that had already barely contained her large round mounds.
From the time she had first come to his era to now Kagome had grown from a girl to a woman. She was now eighteen and her figure was more apparent, more enticing and womanly. While she was still a head shorter than he was, her bust had grown, her hips had expanded in preparation for bearing children, muscles were developed from years of running, walking, fighting, and fuck best of all, her gorgeous blue eyes just seemed to have gotten darker to match the ocean she loved to visit. That was one of her favorite places to go when they had a moment and while he bitched, he secretly loved taking her there to explore.
Without thinking, because when did he ever, he swallowed her nipple whole and swirled his tongue around it until he felt it point from excitement. Once he thoroughly ravished one side, he moved to the other. He felt her nimble fingers untying the strings to his haori and aided her in her efforts to remove it. Once she started to shove it down his arms, he pulled away and laid down his kosode and robe of the fire rat. He turned back to her and twisted to lay her down upon the makeshift bed he had made.
After she was fully on her back, he started kissing her again, his hands restless as they studied every curve she possessed more thoroughly than he had with his eyes. Even though their mouths were battling for dominance, his ears caught every sigh, moan, and gasp her voice made.
Once his hands hit the waistline of her pants, she stilled him. Shifting beneath him, she encouraged him to remove her pants. Who was he to refuse what she desired?
Once her pants and underwear were pulled down, he acted without thinking and moved his mouth down her body. Without his mouth swallowing her moans he soon realized how loud she was. He smirked at the idea of seeing how far he could push her--to see what would come out of that smart mouth of hers.
He reached her raven curls and nudged her legs apart. She hesitated slightly and he looked up to see nervousness in her eyes. Swiftly he moved back to look directly into her eyes and grasped her face in his hands as he straddled her.
“You’re beautiful, Kagome. You’re mine. We don’t have to continue though--we can stop and go slowly.”
“N-No. Sorry--I just-- I was kind of nervous about how I smell. It’s been a little bit since we’ve hit a hot spring or river to bathe off in,” she said bashfully.
He couldn’t help but chuckle at her reasonings, “Oh Kagome. Trust me; you smell like a fucking buffet. I can’t wait to taste you.” He licked his lips teasingly as he watched her flush and swallow. He kissed her again hard to try and coax out the woman who originally pleaded to take her for one night. That confidence was what she needed.
Once she was fervent in her kisses again, he dove back down to what his instincts were calling for; a taste of her nether regions. That time when he reached it she didn’t fight him when he spread her legs and laid between them. He initially shoved his nose between her folds. He was slightly tickled by the black hairs that hid her sex from him but fuck, if it was pleasureable with the scent that was so Kagome surrounding every inch of him. He dipped his tongue into her lips and goddamn--he almost lost consciousness. It was better than he had ever fucking dreamed of.
He may have gone a little mad with arousal when he dove in and began eating her out. Control was something he obviously lacked as he lapped up her juices and explored every inch of her sex with his mouth. Not that she seemed like she was complaining at all. No, if anything the cry of his name, the writhing of her body from the sensations he was giving her, and her grabbing his head (thankfully not his ears) pulling him closer only made him want to dive in more.
She had a nub that seemed to really make her wail out louder when he played with that. He decided to focus on that area, thinking he teased her enough, especially from her begging him brokenly for--well he assumed completion. But she didn’t direct him to verbally do anything, only push his head to the nub. Again, who was he to tell her no?
He carefully took two fingers and placed them slightly at her opening, still not confident enough to insert them without some practice, and teased her. She seemed like she was losing her mind in the throes of passion. To be fair, so was he. He was grinding himself on the fucking grass to eleviate some of the pain of his hardened cock.
He realized she was coming when she yelled out his name and her body released more liquid onto his fingers, which he happily licked up. Once she had stilled from her convulsions, he slunk his way back up her body and laughed deeply at her blissed out expression.
“Inuyasha that was--”
“I got just as much out of it as you did--if not more,” he smirked and leaned down to kiss her. She hungirly accepted and reached for his hakama ties. He didn’t stop her and felt her foot come up and hook around it to help ease it down. Without removing his mouth from hers, he kicked off his pants and then hovered over her briefly to just take in the moment. Her flushed cheeks, the glistening sweat on her forehead, the glazed-over look of lust in her dark blue eyes…
“I love you, Inuyasha,” she told him as he sank himself down over her body and lined himself up to enter her.
He kissed her soundly as he dipped his tip to her entrance and his hair fell around them to envelope them in a silver curtain of privacy. As she wrapped her arms around him and spread her legs wider to open herself more to him, he whimpered. The tight heat that consumed his throbbing hardened cock was literally something he never thought he would feel; even in his dream he had never felt so much desperation. But he refused to move in fear of hurting her further.
"Inuyashaaa,” she moaned once he was fully seated inside of her.
“Are you alright?” He asked through gritted teeth. Fuck, he wasn’t a teenager anymore but at this rate he was gonna--
“Yes; stretched but-- it’s like we belong together. You fit perfectly,” she sighed as she brushed her fingers through his hair out of his face to look into his eyes.
She was right though. They did belong together. Then. There. Forever.
He was tentative when he first started pumping inside her but her cries and panting encouraged him. While she said she loved him for who he was, he was still scared he may hurt her. But her mews, pleas for more, and movements from her hips to return his thrusts, fuck, his bitch was amazing.
“Inu-Ya--” she said brokenly as those beautiful sapphire orbs closed and she whimpered.
He ground his hips in circles and brushed his pelvis against her sensitive clit, earning a high pitched cry, “What do you want Kagome? Do you want to be fucked by a demon?”
“Y-yes,” she pleaded using her hands to pull him by his hips closer if that was even possible. He pulled away and she whined, trying to pull him back, but once she figured out what he was doing she moaned his name in impatience.
He threw her legs upon his shoulders and reentered her hard. His cock was in deeper now, his hand was free from holding her leg close to his waist. He reached around and started pinching her very stimulated nub. She began mewling uncontrolablly and it was fucking glorious. To hear such pleasures he was bringing her only made his cock harder if that was even possible.
“Is that what you want Kagome?? To be with a demon?”
“Ahhhh,” she cried as he felt her walls tighten around him. God. Damn. “Yashhhhh,” she ground out flailing her head back and forth. Her breasts were bouncing with every hard and quick pound he gave her. His dick was just at the tip of her womb and he silently thanked Kami she wasn’t in fucking heat otherwise this night would have ended very differently.
He dipped his head to her ear and exhaled making her writhe further under him, “Are you gonna cum for me, Ka-Go-Me?”
“Gods--” he heard her swear before she wailed out her release into the night. Riding out her orgasm it took everything not to explode right then. He slowly eased himself back between her spread legs and sat her up. She was fucking gorgeous; her face was still glistening in sweat, her breathing was starting to calm from her orgasm but still audible to his demonic hearing--scratch that, even a mortal would be able to her her subtle groan and sigh, and her hair was wilder than normal.
He cradled the back of her head to bring her into a kiss as he pumped into her before he couldn’t stave off his own release any longer. He broke the kiss when he felt his youki rising, his fangs growing--
Her hands brushing his cheeks and her accepting eyes calmed his initial panic. She pulled his face to be at her shoulder; she was silently asking him to mark her. He didn’t even mention that to her; he needed to make a note to thank Sango for likely educating her about mating behind his back.
His fangs bit down into her shoulder and she winced at the initial pain but relaxed into it as he spilled his seed inside her. Once he was completely drained, he unclamped his jaw and laved the spot on her neck he had marked then gave it a kiss. She was his. Forever.
“Kagome?”
“Mmmmm?”
“Are you okay?”
“I’ve never been better,” she said, taking his face into her hands again as she leaned in to kiss him.
“I meant--about you coming out here--”
“Oh… Yes and no. I think there’ll always be rougher days; but I have you to lean on. We’ll make it through together.”
He smiled and nuzzled her cheek as he wrapped her up in his haori. He threw his hakama back on along with his kosode and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. Keeping her close, he just allowed her to snuggle into his chest for comfort over the long and tiring day. Her breathing evened out but he didn’t dare move. He wanted this moment to last forever.

Head up, smoots below!
So I know this is late but it was this or nothing yeah? Anyway here is my Pride for Sins week!
If you don’t want the lemons, read it on Fanfiction or AO3 as they are edited. I know most don’t care but I KNOW I have a few readers that aren’t into lemons and I didn’t have any warnings. I wasn’t sure I was going to do smoots. I wanted them but I wasn’t sure I’d get them in. That’s the main reason this is late actually, it takes longer to write a lemon than a clean chapter lmao.
It’s also on my Patreon for free in it’s full glory so if you have preferences, I have given you many choices I think, yeah? And don’t forget to check out the collection! It’s where you can easily find all the Sins Week contributions. Art, fics, it’s amazing!
Lovely Sins Art by @clearwillow! Thank you to the mods; @lemonlushff, @neutronstarchild, and @ruddcatha!
Also, I made a playlist. I know no one really ever looks at these but it’s my thing okay, let it go! LOL! This is me procrastinating btw.... it’s here if you wanna take a listen.

“Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.”
― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
None of us said a word the whole way back to our apartment. Kikyo was still with us, walking in behind Inuyasha and I had to bite my tongue to keep from telling her to get the fuck out. If she was staying, then I had no problem spending the rest of the night in my room. I already had high hopes for doing that.
We made it to the living room before, shockingly, Kagome turned on Kikyo. “You need to go home…”
Before she could finish, Kikyo jumped on her. “You guys are overreacting! I was helping them! Doing something good for them! You’re both just too full of yourselves to see it!”
Kagome was calm to a point that it was scaring me. Slowly shaking her head at Kikyo she took her time and chose her words wisely. Something I never would have had the willpower to do in a million years. “I get that you think that, that you think you were helping them but…”
“I was!!!” Kikyo spat, cutting Kagome off again “Don’t you get it? These guys, they’re vir...gins. As in pure and innocent?! That’s the last thing you want and what they wanted, not knowing their way around a woman’s body? I was helping the two of you out too…”
This time, Kagome cut off Kikyo and it was not pretty. “You did exactly what you wanted to as always, Kikyo. They’re our mates, not yours but you’re so determined to make them into the men you think they should be that you’ve lost your own mate.” I was sure Kagome had never yelled at Kikyo that way. It was honest and it was clear Kikyo’s pride was broken getting scalded in front of so many. Kagome sighed and grabbed her shoulders tight. “You need to go home because Naraku is waiting for you there. Go talk to him, please.”
Leaving it at that as well as the rest of us, Kagome went to her room and we all stood there awkwardly for a moment. Kikyo silently sulked towards the door so I went for mine. Last thing I wanted was to be left alone with Inuyasha and Miroku.
Fully planning on getting my shower, I made it across my room to my hamper before I was no longer alone. I knew it was Miroku. Process of elimination as well as just knowing. “Just because you spent the day watching naked women shake their asses at you doesn’t mean I’m okay with you seeing me naked too. Get out!”
I refused to look at him, keeping my back to him and trying to get my shaking under control. Everything hurt and I wanted a hot shower even more. It had been a long day and the sun was only now heading for bed. The bright orange light filled my room with light and silence as he chewed on my words. He was still there, the door hadn’t squeaked like it always did when opened. Even if it didn’t do that, I knew he was there.
I could feel him.
That, above everything else, bothered me the most. It was clear we were connected to each other. The cocky man behind me was my soulmate and he was going to break me. It was inevitable. If my past had taught me anything it was that men like him use you up and spit you out. And I was tied to him? How was any of this fair, we should have never done that stupid spell!!
“Kikyo…” his voice was soft and unexpected, making me shiver at the sound of it, “she was only trying to help.”
I laughed hollowly and watched as I twisted my fingers together painfully. “Help. Right. All she did was help me to see your real needs.”
He took a step closer. I knew not because I heard it or saw it. I could feel that he was closer to me and my skin began to heat up in an unpleasant manner. “She was right. You are nothing but hubris. You think because I am your Mate that there is no work required to be together when all you’ve been is work for me.”
The knife he planted in my back, right in my heart, caused a numbness to slowly spread across my body. Now, his nearness didn’t burn at all.
I felt nothing.
“Then she did help you. Helped you to escape ‘the work’ of being with me as I want nothing to do with you anymore. We’re done.” He was still there though and the last thing I wanted was to give him another pair of breasts to look at and compare. So I faced him, planning to strip in the bathroom and his eyes were dull and lifeless. “You should just go back to where you came from.”
I made it to the bathroom in one piece, stripping as if my life depended on it. Because I felt like I might freeze to death if I didn’t get in the warm water soon. The hot water helped but I felt like I was getting sick. Having a demon from unknown origins touch you all over had to spread germs, right?
The stream had chilled so I turned up the heat when my curtain squealed back on the rod. I squealed too, covering all I could of my front and backing up into the corner for the rest. Miroku ignored me, stepping into the shower, naked as when I met him.
“What are you doing?! Get out!!!!”
He continued to ignore me, stepping into my water and getting good and wet. His hair free, I watched with trance like fascination as it dampened and stuck to his skin. The black made his skin look a little paler and I found myself looking at other parts, like his shoulders to start. Then his chest, wide and thick. Then his belly which wasn’t rippled like Inuyasha’s but soft and comfortable looking. But then I wrenched my eyes to the ceiling.
Don’t look at his penis, don’t look at his penis, don’t look at his….
“You can look, you know? You’ve seen it before and I really don’t mind.”
He was smirking, watching me and I glowered back. “Finish your shower and get out.”
Miroku clucked his fucking tongue at me and I nearly pounced on the cocky bastard. “That’s not very nice. But I know you don’t mean it.”
“I do!!!”
Chuckling, he shook his head at me and grabbed my elbow. It was either release my breasts and push him back or let him fold me into him. So I let him pull me in, unable to allow him the satisfaction of my naked body. I looked at the wall while he looked down at me, his hot breath warmer than the water we stood in as he panted on me. “Sango… why are you clinging so hard to your ego?”
Scoffing, I tried to step back but he held firm. “It’s not my ego, it’s you! How am I supposed to even look at you without seeing a naked woman on your lap?”
“By evening the odds.” Now I looked at him, utterly confused. “How many men have you had? Before we met, how many men have you slept with?”
“That’s none of your business!”
“I see. So it’s a lot?”
I slapped him then slapped myself when I covered my chest again. “That’s not the point! I didn’t know you yet!”
Biting my lip at my slip, I let him digest my words but he didn’t take long. “How am I supposed to function? Knowing that you’ll be comparing me to all those men? I have no experience, Sango. You are my first everything.”
“Not your first breasts!” I spat venomously.
It wasn’t fair and I knew it but I couldn’t stop myself. Miroku was right, my pride had been wounded. Before, I would have had no problem stripping for him and showing him all of my body. If I had known he was a virgin, I wouldn’t have hesitated, all my body issues would have melted away knowing he would have nothing to compare me to. But now? He had a hell of a lot to compare. And it was all fresh in his mind.
Grabbing my chin, I was forced to look at him. But once I met his dark blue eyes I felt trapped, unable or willing to look anywhere else. “If there is one thing I’ve learned today, it’s that no one is as beautiful as you, Sango.” I huffed as his cheesy line but he frowned. “No one.”
His mouth crashed to mine and my body reacted, wrapping around him just like an octopus. He wrapped around me as well, bending me back with his passion as he kissed the hell out of me. But the wicked thoughts remained in my head as he ran his hands over my back to my ass. Like what he thought of its size? The dips of cellulite? Was my skin smooth enough or tight enough? It was enough for me to push and pull from him, backing up into my corner again and catching my breath.
Now he could look at me fully, standing a good distance from him. I had my hands on the tops of my thighs to try and hide even if foolish. I had no problems with my stomach or my breasts. They weren’t as great as some of the strippers but they were a good size and shape and my belly was flat even if not toned. It was everything below my waist I struggled with. And Miroku had zeroed in on that part of my anatomy from the start.
I watched the floor and his feet, feeling his eyes drink me in so hard, it burned. He took the small step to me and my chin was grabbed again. I swear there was red in his eyes. A strange ember that was burning around his iris. It was scary but thrilling at the same time. And it had me back in my trance.
“No one compares to you.” He mumbled, stuck in the same trance with me.
Cornered, Miroku mushed into me, pressing his entire body against mine. He felt nice, not too hard and not too soft. Just like his kisses, heating up my body with his intense but gentle lips. His cock, which was pressing into my belly, was not soft at all. It was very hard. A voice whispered in my head, wondering if he got like this because of me or the other women he saw today? So I pressed my tongue to his, trying like hell to silence the voice, my ego speaking loudly in my brain.
His mouth trailed down my skin, pressing hot lips to my pulse. While his hands lifted my breasts into his hold, testing their weight before messaging the lumps. Miroku’s wet hair was wrapped around my fingers, grabbing and leading him around to where I wanted his mouth. I was fully ready to give everything to this man, my body, heart, and soul and I had known him for less than twenty-four hours.
Pushing as gently as my hot need would allow, I had him poised over a breast, wanting him to do everything to it. He grabbed my wrists first, pulling my hold off his head before barely licking my nipple. I arched on instinct, wanting more, but I suddenly found myself facing the wall. Miroku had flipped me around and now had my ass facing him.
I tried to spin back around but he held me still, my wrists in his hold and above my head. I was trapped. “What are you doing?!”
He was still pressed against me so at least he wasn’t looking at me. “Giving you what you need.”
This wasn’t what I needed. I fought against his hold but he just put my hands into one of his large ones and stood back. Miroku was examining me, looking over my weakest point of myself. The flame I had, the one he ignited, was quickly going out and all I wanted to do now was cry.
The hand that didn’t hold me still ran down my back, feather touches to my spine until it hit the top of my ass. “You’re so beautiful, Sango.”
Hot tears fell down my cheeks and I whimpered as his hand settled over one of my butt cheeks. “Liar.”
“I’m not.”
“How do I know? How could I ever know? And how could I ever believe you when you were soooo happy with those other women today?”
He squeezed my ass hard and groaned. “How would you ever believe me if I hadn’t? I could tell you till I was blue in the face that you were the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. But if you were the only one I had seen, then you would never believe me.”
He was right but I still couldn’t give in to him. Call it condescension, I just couldn’t let him win. “If I was the only woman you’d ever seen then I would be the most beautiful to you. And that would have been more than enough.”
Miroku was pressed against me again, his dick digging in between my lower cheeks. “Sango, you’re the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Every part of you is perfect. Will you please be my first?”
My hands were released and I slowly turned to face him. His eyes were glowing now, thanks to his smile and the red fire inside them. It was nothing like the smile he had given to the girls at the club earlier. There was something more to it, something else inside it that hadn’t been there before. It made me feel warm and gooey inside. And in between my legs, the urge to find out what his strange penis felt like strong.
Guess he would be a first for me too, I’d never had sex with a demon before.
I don’t know if he just knew my answer or didn’t care, cause I had said and done nothing when he grabbed my ass and lifted me up. My back was flush with the wall and I watched as he lined himself up. Seeing him at half mast didn’t prepare me at all, his cock now full of blood and raging. Most penises were a bit red when ‘angry’. Miroku’s was slightly purple. I didn’t know if that was from years of wanting or from all the teasing today but neither explained the large bumps along his shaft.
He looked like a dildo.
The water on it made it glitter like one too, looking just like the one I used to have before a jealous boyfriend got pissed and threw it out. He didn’t want to be compared to a toy and, given my body issues, I couldn’t argue with him on it. Wonder how he would feel knowing I was about to fuck the near copy of that dildo?
Probably nothing since he was happy with his tiny new wife.
Having that dildo was a blessing in disguise, because I was sure most would be freaked out or terrified by Miroku. The look he gave me when I remained calm but needy told me I was right, he had body issues too. That made my heart pound like crazy in my chest, a beautiful man like Miroku, who was full of pride, struggled with parts of himself too.
He was eager, getting his tip in slowly but then rushing the rest. In a blink, he had my pussy full of him but I didn’t mind. It wasn't my first time and he was struggling to contain himself. That, and shit he felt good. Better than the damn dildo. Miroku was warm and alive, pulsing and twitching inside me just like I was.
Frozen, he groaned with every slight movement so I remained still so he could recover. All I did was encourage, stroking his hair and kissing his temple and cheek.
“I’m sorry…” He groaned after a few moments.
I found his ear and pressed my lips to it. “It’s okay. Take your time.”
That was all he needed, my encouragement, to rally. I felt every delicious bump of his shaft as he pulled out of me. He was slow to pull out but fast to thrust back in. As if he hated to leave me. It wasn’t long until he had a rhythm, tickling me from my entrance to my dam as he bounced me.
Wrapping my legs around him, I used my hips to help him, putting our bodies flush and getting him deeper. It had him pressing hard on my clit with his pelvis, my walls twitching and juice flooding from the change.
Miroku released one hand from my ass and grabbed my hair instead, pulling my head back to get my neck. He was growling, biting and sucking to leave many marks on me. I didn’t care, I was seconds away from one of the best orgasms of my life.
“You feel… so amazing… oh Sango, I’m glad I waited…. You’re perfect… so perfect…”
Miroku was a talker, mumbling words into my neck while his tip danced, coming right before me. I grabbed his hair now, pulling his face back to look him in the eyes. “Don’t you dare stop!”
He didn’t. Instead, he grabbed my ass in both hands again and lifted me up and down on him. While he continued to thrust. It had him pounding my clit and rubbing my spot. All of him rubbed me actually, the man growing after coming and stretching me around him more. I was sure I was ripping out hair but I couldn’t stop, euphoria shaking me to my core as white overtook my vision. I heard Miroku groan again but I didn’t know if it was my grip on his hair or my grip on his cock, my pussy squeezing him as I came. I was still convulsing around him when he stopped, letting my walls press against him over and over again. It was like nothing I had ever had before, sometimes needing to finish myself with past lovers.
There was no need with Miroku, I was boneless as it was, unable to move in his arms at all. He continued to hold me tight to him, both of us out of breath. I registered him turning off the water, leaving it on the entire time we fucked. But then, Miroku pulled us from our corner and didn’t put me down. Not even to pull his cock from inside me.
“What are you doing?!”
I cowered a little at my bruskness, he had just given me the best sex and I was already yelling at him again. But he took it in stride, not losing his gorgeous smile. “Thank you, Mate, for a memorable first time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will now take you as many times as I please.”
oOo
The loftiness of those two. Just because they finally have a man, they think they're better than me. Was that all I was to them? A good time? I was always there for them in the bad, getting them dates and taking them out when they got dumped.
God, they were just as bad as men, getting what they wanted from me then moving on.
Who needed friends like that? To lie to my face, just to get rid of me too. No way was Naraku just sitting here wai…
I stopped dead in my tracks, Naraku leaning up against my door. It was easy to forget the crazy, bird moment he had earlier, looking so sexy with his dark waves standing out on his white undershirt. He still had on his jeans, the hoodie he left in gone. He must have gotten hot and taken it off. And just how many women did he have wrapped around his finger after today?
Even though I never asked, I was pretty sure he wasn’t a virgin when we met. He was far too eager and sure of himself when we fucked. There was nothing that was just mine, I had to share my soulmate too.
He moved to the side so I could unlock and open the door. But that was all he gave me, silent as he followed me inside. My place was the same size as Kagome’s and Sango’s but it was all mine. They never asked me to room with them but I liked living alone anyway.
Naraku stood, annoyed, just behind me as I moved to my bedroom and stripped off my jeans. “What are you doing here?”
His response was to enter deeper into the room, standing up to me. Grabbing my hips, he pulled us flush against each other. If I had protests, I wouldn’t have been able to voice them as he captured my mouth at such a speed it would’ve been impossible.
We both moved, backing me around to the bed. When I fell to it, he remained standing to strip and I watched. The way he stood, naked with his cock straining at attention, there was no way I was his first.
I let that thought linger while he crawled over me, ripping my top off me in my daze. He was already inside me when I woke up from my revelry, slowly pulling in and out of me like lovers. It felt good. Amazing really, especially with the attention he was giving my breasts, licking and sucking them. But I just wasn’t in the mood.
I flipped us and he didn’t complain, putting my weight on his shoulders to angle myself perfectly. It was what I did when I just wanted to get off, my clit pressed to his hips and my nipples rubbing on his chest. All while I pushed his dick into my g-spot. Now, it felt amazing, tipping towards my end quickly.
Damn if the bastard didn’t flip us again. I glowered up at him as he held himself over me. He smirked back, grabbing my knee and pulling it up to my chest. When he rammed into me, I was surprised. That’s why I cried out. Not because he was revolutionary or anything. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing he made my head spin.
Naraku was going at my pussy hard now, really fucking me and I was seconds from falling into bliss again, when he started squawking.
Fuck it was distracting, grabbing his face in my hands and stopping all movements and sounds. “Don’t do that!”
“What?”
“Squawk!!!”
He grinned, slowly moving his hips again and teasing me. “It’s a compliment. I don’t let out my animal side for anyone.”
“You did this afternoon….”
“That was different. Just shut up and let me enjoy you.”
Talking was over and I was partly glad. I didn’t like talking in bed. Naraku went back to ramming and squawking and I closed my senses off to it, focusing on his dick as much as possible. My orgasm hit and I moved against him, trying to get as much as possible from him as I came. He dropped my leg and ground his pelvis against my clit, making explosions of pleasure shoot through me until I finished. The last thing he did was pull out to come in his palm, rushing off to the bathroom a few minutes later.
I was pulling on fresh clothes when he returned, looking me over as if confused. Did he think we would cuddle? Or go again? I wasn’t in the mood for either at the moment, a bit pissed at myself for falling back into bed with this man so easily. “Why did you come back?”
He shrugged, “I was told to return.”
I swallowed the bitterness that was in my mouth from that statement. “What does that mean?” He was silent and I tore my eyes from him back to nothing. “If you don’t want to be here, then leave.”
“I’m supposed to talk to you first.”
Great, I hated it when men said they ‘wanted to talk’. It was never good. Especially right after sex. “Let’s get this over with then.”
Naraku moved to sit on the bed, flopping in a manner that I could only describe as not sexy. “You’re unfaithful. How am I ever to trust you as a mate?”
“Me?! You’re the one propositioning Kagome right in front of me,” his eyes went wide and I grimaced at him, “I could hear you, you idiot.”
“Impressive hearing for a human. Especially one that only listens to themself.”
I growled back at him, “how would you know? You’ve barely spent ten minutes with me where you weren’t fucking me…”
“And who’s fault is that? You left me with others to go on a date!” Now my mouth hung open. “I could hear you too, you idiot.”
“Arrggg, I never should have summoned you! I don’t want you!”
Your cunt says otherwise! If it wasn’t for Master’s commands, I would be long gone!”
“Wait, what?” I squeaked.
I expected a fight or something but he was all too willing to fill me in… as usual. “Kagome. She is our Master and it’s for the best that we obey…..”
“Does she know this?”
I stared at him, searching his face for a lie. But he had never lied to me and now wasn’t different. He shook his head to say he wasn’t sure but I was. In a rush, I grabbed my jeans back up and started shoving them on.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m going to Kagome’s. She needs to be stopped before she ruins In… others.”
If I hurried, I could stop Kagome from controlling Inuyasha. Whether she knew it or not. And he could be mine instead.
oOo
I went into my room but I didn’t really have much of a reason. Other than wanting to be alone. It was way too early for me to go to bed. I probably should have showered but I could hear Sango’s shower going. The apartment was older and didn’t allow two showers at once. Unless you wanted a cold one.
With nothing more to do, I changed and got in the bed only to lie there. I was exhausted. A day from hell. But my brain would not shut the fuck up.
From the moment I met Inuyasha, to his jealousy over Naraku, and to him dancing on the stage I thought about each and every moment, marking when I said something to him to influence him. Was it only when I spoke? Or did it go off my thoughts too? I had wanted him to hold me and be here for me. I would be happy with being friends too, just a good, strong male friend that could comfort me like my friends couldn’t. There was just something about a man that cares for you that a female can’t cover.
I was so lost in thought, I missed when I stopped being alone. The bed shifted and before I could turn, Inuyasha spooned against me. His arms wrapped around me, filling me with comfort that quickly soured. I didn’t know if he was here because he wanted to be or because my thoughts brought him.
As gently as possible, I pushed at his hold. “Inuyasha, I think you should sleep on the floor.”
“Why?” I was biting my tongue, not wanting to command him to do anything out of fear he would follow. “Is it because of that place? Those women?”
I really didn’t care that he went to a strip club. He was the main attraction there anyway, dancing better than the midday B squad.
He misunderstood my silence. It wasn’t that I was angry, I was terrified to speak! But it didn’t deter Inuyasha, his nose digging through my hair until he found the back of my neck. “Don’t be mad, Master.”
I cringed and stiffened, trying again to pull away from him. I felt sick but Inuyasha refused to let me go. What could I say? Nothing. It would force his hand either way. He was rubbing his face into me, up and down the back of my neck. His lips grazed my skin along the top of my spine and I felt my entire body catch flame. None of me wanted him to stop and I didn’t know if he knew that. If he could feel it and was compelled by it.
“Can you… hear my thoughts?” He froze and shook his head, his nose going side to side on my neck. “So you don’t know what I want?”
“I wish I did.” I felt it was obvious but he was innocent and naive. “I want you, Master. No one else. You have to know that, right?”
I wanted him too, my body was practically screaming for him. “I… I…”
Clamping my mouth shut, I stopped myself from saying anything. Anything from my mouth could sway him and I didn’t want that. The last thing I wanted was to control him and make him do anything with this power I had. One that I didn’t understand but was there.
His hands were starting to move, going up to my ribs and turning around to go to my hips and back. He wanted my permission but I couldn’t get my mouth to move to give it. Each time his hands landed on my hips, they twitched, trying to move his touch elsewhere without saying a word. His hips moved too, pressing into my ass with a rhythm that I was meeting. His hardness was between my cheeks, grinding. And I ground back.
“Master…” he moaned and I whimpered back, “tell me what you want…”
I was going to die. I wanted… no needed him but he was waiting for my command. I refused to give it, I wouldn’t do that to him ever. “I want… you to stop calling me Master.”
He growled, “Kagome,” and I swear I nearly came from that alone. Then he grabbed my knee, slinging it over his hip and putting his hand flat on my inner thigh. I was now spread out for him on my side.”Show me what you want… what to do…”
With his hand inching closer and closer to warmth, I didn’t need more to understand. So I took the hand he had on my thigh and pulled two of his fingers free. Using my fingers, I pressed him to my folds. My panties were already wet and they were only getting wetter as I showed him what to do. He took over in a few shuddering breaths, placing a hand over my mouth instead so I didn’t get too loud.
Sango was still in the shower for now but who knew when she’d get out and be able to hear us.
He stopped but only so he could slip his hand inside my panties instead. A finger slipped and neared my entrance, but what was an accident caused me to whimper loudly and Inuyasha to explore. His finger slid inside me with ease and my body reacted, my hips twisting to get more.
Maybe it was curiosity, seeing pairs of breasts earlier that day? Or that I was panting and mine were bouncing, but Inuyasha took his free hand to cup a breast and squeeze. It caused me to squeeze his finger with my walls. To which, Inuyasha growled again and slipped another finger inside me, gripping my breast tight.
With all this attention, my nipples were standing at attention through my shirt. When Inuyasha started strumming it, my mind started spinning. I was pretty sure I was hopping on his fingers, wiggling against his touch.
He stopped again, pulling his fingers out of me and his hand out of my underwear. This time, it was to rip them in half, my cloth panties now strips of nothing. He gently pushed my leg off of him to shift behind me, getting his pants down. Soon, he had his cock pressed against my ass with nothing between us. It was hot and large. I wanted to look at it but with him behind me, it was impossible. I didn’t need to, I could feel it’s length and girth.
Inuyasha was huge.
My leg was back on his hip again and his fingers were in my folds, splitting them until he found my clit. The hard nob stood out and I jumped when he pinched it, telling him he had found what he was looking for.
With his hands occupied, he had to put himself in without assistance. Lining himself up, he twisted his hips around then pushed. I could feel him, pressing my entrance but then slipping past it. I was wet and ready but he was big and struggled to go inside.
So I reached down and held him in place.
Every inch of him forced me to stretch around him, my body expanding to accommodate but doing so willingly. Once up to his hilt, I felt impossibly full. Now Inuyasha was the one whimpering, his husky sighs of want vibrated my ear and neck. With him still rubbing my clit, I was pulsing around him. It wasn’t going to take me long to come, not with his large cock and stroking fingers. I didn’t expect him to last long either, what with it his first time.
He started moving and my entire insides fluttered. It was like being on a roller coaster, doing a loopty-loop. And I loved roller coasters. Inuyasha was giving me one hell of a ride, twisting his hips to move more. I pushed on the bed, backing up into him and holding myself still against his thrusts. I wasn’t going anywhere, his arms locked around me, a hand in my snatch and one on my breast. But I felt like I was falling so I held on tight.
Wrapping his finger and thumb around it, Inuyasha rolled my clit around and hit my lovely spot inside at the same time. I was crying, begging him not to stop even though he hadn’t so much as hesitated. Coming hard and strong left me saying crazy things.
Heat was spreading through my bones and Inuyasha was still pumping more pleasure into me. The last of my orgasm squeezed all of me tight, my body tensing and Inuyasha moaned loudly in my ear. With us both still, I could feel him as he pumped into me, coming just as I finished like a good lover.
We didn’t move, still wrapped up in each other and catching our breath. I don’t know how much time passed but I did notice that Inuyasha was still hard. Impossible to miss with him still inside me. “Was that… good?” He had to ask? I couldn’t help but giggle at him and nod. Inuyasha squeezed me tighter and rubbed his lips along my neck again. “Can we… do it again?”
I wanted to. Dear god did I. But I needed a minute, pushing gently on him to get free. “Some water first, please?”
Turning to face him, I caught the brilliant glow of his eyes before he pressed a hard and fast kiss to my lips. He kissed me a few times, trying to start round two now. With a little pushing I got free of his lips, giggling when he continued to try. He gave up soon, getting to his feet and quickly fixing his pants. I could still see his hard on inside his sweats.
When I tried to get up, he gently pushed me back down. “I’ll get your water. You stay and keep your clothes on,” he said suddenly and I looked at him to question, “I want to be the one to take them off you.”
Even with us just having sex, I still blushed at his words. Inuyasha was gone a second when the door flew open again, Sango flying into my room. I caught the wild look of her hair and the towel she had wrapped around her and found myself once again confused. “Did you just get out of the shower??”
“Kagome, you have to help me. He won’t stop.”
“Sango!”
I was stunned to my bed, not wearing much more than Sango, when Miroku stormed in. He wore a towel too, thankfully. Seeing him naked once was enough for me.
He was grabbing Sango, trying to pull her into his arms and Sango was trying to turn him down. It looked like she didn’t know how to tell him no. I struggled to understand just what the problem was. “Miroku! Listen to Sango!!”
My stomach turned when he stopped and did as I ordered, gently holding Sango instead of pulling her to his mouth. “I need a break!”
“But… I want more…”
“So do I but I need to rest at least a little bit!!!” Sango screamed.
If they were talking about what I thought they were, they needed to do it elsewhere. I was still trying to calm my stomach as it was, getting off the bed to search out Inuyasha. He wanted me to wait for him here but I was pretty sure he didn’t know where the glasses were.
I had to push the couple out of my way to get out only to glance back at them in confusion. Was I asleep or something? Or had I hit my head? Did Inuyasha and I not just make love? Or was all of it in my head starting from his care for me?
I was questioning everything but that’s what happens when you walk out to your soulmate kissing another woman, Inuyasha and Kikyo mid makeout while my heart cracked into a million pieces.
No guarantees on another chapter today guys. I’m going to try but it’s not looking good already. Sorry!

“Inuyasha, dinner’s ready!”
Satisfied the hanyou would heed her call and come running at the promise of food, a smiling Kagome ducked back inside her little hut and bustled about, cleaning up a bit of the clutter and retrieving some dishes for their meal as she waited for her ever constant companion. She was confident he would hear her wherever he was in the village, although she suspected he wasn’t that far away. It was something she’d learned earlier on after her return; Inuyasha was never too far away, and though he may be out of sight, she knew he was reluctant to put much distance between them, and she felt the same exact way.
Setting the wooden serving tray on the floor before the fire, a beautiful housewarming gift from Miroku and Sango when she’d officially “moved in” into the hut that had previously belonged to a now deceased elderly man, Kagome sat back and stared thoughtfully into the fire, still smiling as she took a moment to think back on all that had happened since her return nearly four months ago.
Never in all of her life could Kagome have ever possibly imagined she’d be as happy as she was right now without any of the modern conveniences she’d grown up with. If someone had told her before she’d fallen down the well on her fifteenth birthday that three years from now she’d be living with no hot water or plumbing and call it paradise, she’d think them gone completely daft. Someone like her? Whose favorite pastime was taking hot baths living without hot water and being happy about it? Get real!
But then, as fate would hate it, funnily enough this was her paradise. Breathing in the fresh, clean open air, having her friends that were as close as family here with her, and sharing it all with the man she loved. It all sounded too good to be true, and sometimes Kagome did wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, fearing that her nightmares were a reality and she was still trapped in the darkness, never to see her friends or Inuyasha again.
But then strong arms, familiar arms, surrounded her in a comforting embrace as a low voice rumbled assurances in her ear and she was able to breathe once more as blessed reality came rushing back. She’d cling to him, crying her relief, and he’d hold her tight, whispering to her, telling her everything was alright much as he had her first day back.
It was a day Kagome often thought back on with a fond smile, because not only was it the point in which her life changed forever, but it was also when she realized her hanyou wasn’t the same stubborn, temperamental boy she’d involuntary left behind three years ago. They’d all be in Kaede’s hut, celebrating her return and swapping stories of how their lives have gone thus far when, her emotions finally catching up to her, Kagome had without any warning completely broken down. Her entire body had shaken with heart wrenching sobs, her face was wet with endless tears, and no matter how hard she’d tried, she couldn’t stop.
Her relief had been so intense, her joy of being reunited with those she loved most was so great, so incredibly strong she’d been unable to contain it and it had overflowed in the form of relentless crying. She’d been unable to answer Miroku and Sango’s concerned questions, only managing a stuttered apology, but then, surprising everyone in the room, Inuyasha had wordlessly stood up, settled himself beside her, and then scooped her up into his arms before cradling her in his lap, holding her as she broke apart.
Kagome had clung to him desperately, not even bothering to question his very uncharacteristic display of affection. When she’d calmed down enough where she wasn’t a total mess, she’d turned around, held out her arms to the friends that she’d missed so much, and for the next few minutes the five of them had simply held one another, rejoicing in their loved one’s permanent return.
And then the twins, wanting in on all the affection too, had joined in, Kagome laughed, and the atmosphere considerably lightened. She’d gotten introduced to Miroku and Sango’s children then, immediately bonding and falling in love with them, and they’d been able to fall back into conversation like she’d never even left, comfortable, easy, familiar.
The entire time she’d remained seated in Inuyasha’s lap with his arms draped loosely around her and they’d looked so happy no one had the thought to tease them about it.
Kagome blushed, remembering how she’d slept through the night in his arms. She was extremely pleased to say that their relationship had grown by leaps and bounds and while neither of them had truly confessed their feelings yet, they were no stranger to physical intimacy. It wasn’t anything serious yet – just mainly hugging and a few chaste kisses here and there – but Kagome was happy with where things stood between them. There was no rush, after all; she was here to stay and they had all the time in the world now that they didn’t have some great evil looming above their heads twenty-four seven.
Her blush deepened and despite herself a giggle erupted from her mouth before she could stifle it. Well, she wasn’t in a rush at least. While Inuyasha hadn’t pushed her for anything or even hinted that he wanted more, he had been the one to kiss her first, just a few short days after her return. It had been slow, gentle, incredibly sweet, and he’d simply held her afterward, claiming that he’d wasted enough time with her before being an immature, emotionally stunted asshole – his words, not hers, and her laugh had made him grin – and he didn’t want to wait anymore to show her he wanted to be with her.
Kagome had been able to do nothing but drag him in for another kiss but he’d heard her message loud and clear. Ever since then, every once in a while Kagome was able to surprise him by brushing a soft kiss to his lips, but more often than not it was that devilish man that liked to catch her off guard by sweeping her into a kiss without warning and she knew he only did it because he thought the heavily blushing and flustered state he left her in was funny as hell.
Despite this, however, and even though she did often chase the cackling hanyou through the village while shouting various threats of dismemberment, she never asked him to stop.
She did have to admit, however, with that familiar fluttering sensation in her tummy, that it was getting increasingly more difficult to resist the urge to either crawl into his lap at night, or ask him to join her in bed. Not because she wanted to tempt him or take their relationship to the next level, but because she wanted him to hold her as she fell asleep, to be surrounded by his warmth in the hopes that perhaps he would be able to chase the nightmares away.
Kagome suddenly bit her lip in thought and glanced toward the futon, her flush deepening at the direction her thoughts had inadvertently taken, however the small smile that curved her mouth was cautiously hopeful. Maybe…maybe it was time she finally stopped pussyfooting around her feelings and asked him to join her. Hell, maybe she’d even do it tonight. He practically lived here anyway; it’s where he ate, slept, and Kagome didn’t want him to feel like he had to sit sleeping against the wall in his own home when the futon was plenty big enough for both of them—a generous gift from Kaede who’d handed it over with a knowing smile that Kagome hadn’t understood at the time.
Now, though… Kagome sighed and shook her head with a chuckle. The old woman always had been rather perceptive and rather sly, to boot. She sent a silent word of thanks to her dear friend, her decision made. Yes, this was their home, Kagome loved it, and though he occasionally complained that it smelled like old man, she knew he liked it, too.
A giddy sense of excitement welled up inside her and Kagome released a few girlish giggles, allowing herself just a brief moment ridiculousness as she squirmed about where she sat, her face flushed, but her smile bright. She was fairly certain Inuyasha would agree; even if he hadn’t said it in so many words, she knew he cared for her – perhaps even loved her – and really, it wasn’t like he hadn’t done it before, except only this time it wouldn’t be because he was comforting her from another nightmare.
Kagome sighed wistfully, then frowned, gaze swinging toward the door. Speaking of which, where was that man? He should have been here by now.
Getting to her feet, she ambled over to the door and swept aside the reed mat. “Inuyasha? Dinner’s ready.” A pause. “Inuyasha?”
When still she heard nothing but the gentle breeze rustling the trees and saw neither hide nor hair of her hanyou, Kagome sighed and ventured out to go find him. It was possible he was taking a quick dunk in the river to wash off the dirt and sweat of the day, or he could be entertaining the twins at Miroku and Sango’s. He had a soft spot for those girls and they adored him in return, and watching them interact never failed to bring a smile to her face.
Kagome smiled and absentmindedly put a hand over her stomach, biting her lip as she imagined it round with their child. Though it was true she was in no rush in terms of their relationship, she would like to get there someday, and she hoped Inuyasha felt similarly. Of course, knowing her hanyou like she did, she also understood it could be a very long time until he felt ready enough to cross that step, but she was content to wait for however long he needed.
She just really hoped he wouldn’t make her wait too long.
Inwardly snorting but with a little smile curling her lips, Kagome started towards their friends’ house – even if he wasn’t there, they might have a clue as to where he is – however, she’d only taken just a few steps before she spotted the very person she’d been intent on searching for.
Cradled in the roots of his favorite lounging tree, relaxed and utterly dead to the world, Inuyasha hadn’t heard her because he was indulging in one of his recent favorite pastimes, hands behind his head and even snoring lightly. The damp hair and open kosode and suikan suggested he had indeed taken a brief dip into the river before deciding to take a nap and Kagome crept a little closer, being careful not to wake him.
Her expression softened and she knelt down, crossing her arms over her bent knees as she regarded him with a loving smile. If someone had told her three years ago that Inuyasha was napping somewhere, completely oblivious to everything, she wouldn’t have believed them. She’d known him to always be restless with pent up energy, unable to sit down and do nothing while Naraku was still out there destroying lives and collecting Shikon jewel shards. So to see him like this now, so peaceful and without a worry in the world, it was truly refreshing and a sight to savor.
She couldn’t really blame him for developing a fondness for naps. Before they had never had any time to just sit down and rest, to kick back and relax because there had always been a new enemy to fight, a shard to find and purify, and napping was damned near impossible when there was a despicably evil demon constantly looming over their heads, power hungry and hell bent on their destruction.
But now that Naraku was gone, they didn’t have to worry about any of that. They could finally just breathe, take naps, sit down and smell the damn roses and hell, have a freaking cup of tea while they were at it. The point was, they had the time now, and Kagome didn’t blame Inuyasha one bit for taking advantage of it when he could.
As a matter of fact, it was awfully temping to join him in peaceful slumber, to snuggle up against him and doze off for a while, but dinner was over the fire at home and she didn’t want it to spoil. She bit her lip as she stared at him, tilting her head to the side in thought, and then smiled.
She knew exactly how to wake him. She didn’t get this rare opportunity often and she didn’t want it to go to waste.
Fighting back the urge to giggle as she oh so slowly inched closer, Kagome managed to prop herself up over him without, miracle of miracles, waking him up and she was smiling broadly now as he hovered her face above his own. He slept on, none the wiser, and biting down on her lip to stifle a giggle that welled up, Kagome started to lean down—
It happened so fast Kagome couldn’t even draw in the breath to gasp. One second she was leaning in to wake him up via tender kiss, and the next Inuyasha had captured her mouth in a heated kiss that had her toes curling and something warm to pool in the pit of her belly. This kiss was different from all the others they’d shared; this one was slow, languid, and incredibly hot, his tongue slipping past her parted lips for a deeper, more thorough taste.
Then suddenly it was over as quickly as it had begun and Inuyasha lied back, his eyes still closed, but the smirk that curved his mouth upward as she sputtered and blushed above him was all kinds of satisfied male arrogance.
With an inarticulate noise of flustered embarrassment echoing in her throat, Kagome flopped down against him and buried her hot face in his shoulder as he chuckled beneath her.
“It was a good try, Kagome,” he rumbled, his smirk widening at her muffled shut up. “I heard you leaving our home and coming this way, but…”
“Shut up,” Kagome repeated in a peevish mutter and weakly slapped his chest, wondering if her burning face would ever return back to normal. Probably not.
“Ten outta ten effort,” Inuyasha continued and laughed at Kagome’s audible groan. “I already told you, wench.” He turned his head and he felt her shiver as he growled in her ear.
“You can’t sneak up on me.”

I have your back
Summary: The problem, started when Miroku had asked the headman of the village for a place to stay for the night since it had been fairly windy out, and the thought of having to sleep another night in the cold filled them all with dread. However, the headman wasn’t too keen on letting a group with two full demons and a hanyo stay in his village despite the fact they had just saved said village from disaster.
Hearing his words, Kagome gives the ignorant man a piece of her mind. https://archiveofourown.org/works/28886559
It had been a day like any other: they had woken up early and set off through the countryside, after a while they had stumbled upon a village that needed their help with a demon that was more annoying than menacing. While it had been a weak one, it had taken them a bit longer to get rid of it, because it moved faster than anticipated. Still, it had caused no real damage to the village and no one had gotten hurt, which had been a relief to everyone involved; besides, villagers usually gave them more food to express their gratitude when the village remained unharmed. The problem, though, started when Miroku had asked the headman of the village for a place to stay for the night since it had been fairly windy out, and the thought of having to sleep another night in the cold filled them all with dread. Even Inuyasha, who didn’t normally complain about such things, had to admit to himself that staying inside with a nice fire and plenty of food (that he didn’t need to catch himself) sounded extremely nice. “I’m very grateful for your help in freeing us from that demon, we’ve been having trouble with him stealing our food for a while. If there’s any way we can repay you, do let me know.” Miroku found it strange that the headman had kept his eyes focused on him, only occasionally glancing at Sango and Kagome as he was speaking, given the fact that they had barely even fought the demon--having only cornered him--and it had been, in fact, Inuyasha who had done most if not all of the work. “Why thank you, we are very happy to know we could be of help. As for repaying, we would be very grateful if you would let us stay the night and provide some food for us so we can recover our energy before we resume our travels tomorrow.” However, the headman wasn’t too keen on letting a group with two full demons and a hanyo stay in his village despite the fact they had just saved said village from disaster. The rest of the villagers seemed to agree as they were quick to throw barely audible snide remarks everytime they so much as caught Inuyasha’s eyes. “I’m grateful to you three for saving the village, and I will allow YOU to stay, however the demons must find another place.” He said, addressing Miroku, Sango and Kagome. Miroku sighed, but tried to reason with him as he was set on getting them a place to stay. “I understand your distrust for demons, as you’ve probably only met ones that wanted nothing but to destroy your village, but I can assure you that my friends are harmless. If anything, we just proved that they mean well by ridding the village of that horrible creature.” “I do not care if they aren’t dangerous as you say.” The headman interrupted without a second hesitation, making Miroku question if he had been truly listening to what he was saying, or if he had just been thinking what to answer next. “A demon is still a demon, and I will have no such FILTH sleeping in my village and risk the lives of my people. And don’t get me started on what an abomination the existence of a half breed like that entails for the world!” he spat with disgust, making Miroku and Sango flinch. Sango stepped forward, feeling herself get mad at the accusations thrown towards her friends. “As a demon exterminator I can assure you, SIR,” she spat with all the venom she had in her, “That what we say is true, we would not allow any harm to your village, and we most certainly would not travel with anyone we deemed dangerous.” Sango’s words seemed to get lost on their way to the villagers' ears, for they all scoffed and started murmuring amongst themselves about how disgusting they thought they all were for keeping such company, regardless of what Miroku and Sango had just said.
“Excuse me if I don’t trust your words, no one worthy of my trust would display affection for a half demon like that.” He threw a death glare at Inuyasha. “Everyone knows half demons are the lowest form of life, even more so than demon’s themselves. Half breeds are scum and unworthy of breathing, if you ask me.” At hearing his words, a sudden wave of rage ran through Kagome unlike any she had felt before. This man had just suggested Inuyasha wasn’t worthy of being alive because of who he was! Now, Kagome wasn’t stupid--she knew this was not the first time he had been called that, and although she had never heard anyone directly call him anything particularly bad, she had witnessed people being afraid of him and keeping their distance. She even recalled the time he had lost himself to his demon side and slaughtering those bandits, and how the villagers had started expressing their concerns over him. At the time, she had been too stunned to say anything or react, other than search for his face and feel her heart break at the expression he held. However this time would be different. No one would ever insult him in front of her if she could help it, for she would give everyone a piece of her mind-and with that thought in mind, she walked up right to the headman, pushing Miroku aside. “EXCUSE ME?” She yelled. “Now I know you’re stupid, because anyone with half a braincell would realize that the one who defeated the demon that was terrorizing YOUR village, was Inuyasha. But I didn’t know you were stupid enough to insult him and think that he won’t GUT you like he did that demon!” Kagome’s face displayed such rage unlike any of her companions had ever seen--it was both scary and inspiring to watch such a small girl have so much nerve against a man that was more than twice her age and size. “Listen--” “NO, I’m not finished. Inuyasha is brave and selfless and kind. He would make this village 100 times safer if he stayed the night, but you’re so wrapped up in your prejudice you can’t even take the time to see he’s a good man.”
At Kagome’s words, Inuyasha could feel his heart skip a beat and begin to pound at twice the normal speed. “Not only that, but he was born out of love, something you will NEVER know. His very existence is proof of something beautiful and is beyond anything that you will ever experience, because no one will ever care for you the way I care about him.” Kagome held her ground and stared directly at the headman’s eyes in defiance. In an act of intimidation, the headman took a couple steps forward and looked down on Kagome as he towered over her tiny frame “Now listen here little girl, I do not know what kind of spell he has placed over you to make you say such words, as if those things would ever describe the monstrosity that is the result of a demon and human. But his very existence disgusts me, as he is nothing but vermin who should have never been born. Whatever woman brought him into this life should’ve done all of us a favor and drowned him when she had the chance.” At this Kagome raised her hand and was about to throw the hardest punch she would ever deliver in her life, but was stopped by two strong hands grabbing her by the legs and hoisting her up upon a very strong shoulder, sending her shoes flying as she kicked her feet in a startle. “Enough already, let’s go, this isn’t worth anyone's time.” Inuyasha said as he started walking away from the village in a quick but steady pace. “Hey, I wasn’t done with him! LET ME DOWN!” But as much as Kagome kicked and thrashed, she was powerless against Inuyasha’s strong hold until she eventually gave up and allowed him to carry her wherever it was he was going. The others followed after them, and she silently thanked Shippo for picking up her shoes and bringing them with him, as she had lost her other pair in battle a couple weeks prior, and to be frank she really didn’t want to go barefoot or borrow Sango’s spare sandals since they always flew off during battle and she ended up barefoot either way. After what seemed like hours--although it was probably more like 20 minutes--they reached a nice clearing in the forest and Inuyasha set Kagome down gently on her feet. “We’ll set camp right here, there’s enough trees for cover so the wind won’t be too bad.” Miroku and Sango exchanged glances with each other, but decided to remain silent so as to not upset their friend any further than he already was. Kagome could tell by Inuyasha’s eyes that he was feeling down and mentally smacked herself for not thinking how what just happened must be affecting him. If she were to guess he was blaming himself for them not having a proper place to sleep tonight. Shippo returned Kagome’s shoes to her, and as Miroku and Sango started gathering wood to set up the campfire, she walked over to where Inuyasha was sitting, motioning with her head for him to follow. They didn’t go too far, as it was important to keep close in case trouble arised, but far enough that they wouldn’t be overheard. Kagome knew what they were about to discuss was a delicate subject for Inuyasha, and he wouldn’t open up if he knew anyone else was listening in. “I’m sorry,” they both said at the same time. “Whatever are you sorry for?” Kagome asked him incredulously. “It’s my fault we weren’t able to stay at the village this time, and any other time for that matter, I’m not stupid.” His eyes didn’t have the sparkle they usually held in them, and he was looking down as he spoke almost afraid to look at her after admitting this. Kagome stepped closer to him and put her hand against his cheek, making him look at her in shock. “Inuyasha, I meant every word I said back there. You are beyond anything any of those people can imagine. You make sure we always have food, a safe place to sleep. I don’t care that we can’t stay in a hut. As long as you’re with me I’d sleep in a pile of shit - okay maybe not a pile of shit but you get my point” At this Inuyasha chuckled and leaned into the hand that was cupping his left cheek, closing his eyes and relishing in her scent and close proximity. “Thank you - for having my back, for saying all those things to him. No one… no one has ever done that for me before” he opened his eyes and looked at her in a way that let her know how grateful he was. It was rare that Inuyasha would open up to her like this, that he would express gratitude over what she had done, but it wasn’t that rare was it? When she thought about it and thought about everything they had been through together. Perhaps in the beginning he would’ve scoffed and called her an idiot for thinking that way about him, but now he knew he was worth more than people in the past let him think. She made sure every single day in any way she could to remind him of it, and assure him he was loved. “We always have each other’s backs, you are worthy of every single breath you take, and you’re perfect just the way you are, there’s not a single hair in your body that I would change… you know that, right? I meant it when I said you were born out of love, I can feel it when you take care of me.” Inuyasha’s face was burning red, but despite his embarrassment at not being used to such words directed at him, he nodded as a small smile formed in his mouth. For how could his heart not swell at Kagome’s words? Despite past experiences telling him she was probably lying, He knew she meant every word, and most importantly, he believed her with everything he had. Kagome dropped her hand from his cheek and dragged it downward, touching his arm all the way until she grabbed his hand, interlacing her fingers with his. “Let’s go before the others get worried about where we went.” Inuyasha began wondering what he had done to deserve such a beautifully mad woman like Kagome. In all his years he never thought anyone would come to love and accept him the way Kagome did. If only he would get over himself and express his feelings towards her, but it wasn’t the right moment yet; he knew in his soul the perfect time would come to let her know how he felt. For now he would have to show it in other ways. He squeezed her hand and gave her the most loving smile he could muster. “Yeah, let’s go.” And so they started making their way back to their friends hand in hand.

Ummmm.... @inukag-week #Confession
So this is an OLD AF Songfic which my autocorrect appropriately tried to change to dingus. I’m so sorry... Whelps! Good Luck Everyone!
Cupid - Jack Johnson from “On and On”
How many times must we go through this? You’ve always been mine, woman, I thought you knew this. How many times must we go through this? You’ll always be mine. Cupid only misses sometimes. Mmmm mm mmmm mm
“Woman! What the hell was that for?” He was in a deep hole… again. He wasn’t surprised really, just angry. He’d made her angry and, just like usual when he pushed her too far, she used the subduing spell. He generally cursed and grumbled for show since it didn’t hurt physically. Most of the time anyway. But this time was slightly different. His pride was hurt more than usual because of one mangy wolf standing over him, gloating and laughing. Inuyasha had had enough. It was time she learned her role and the flea-bitten wolf learned to stay the hell away from Kagome. “That’s it!” he growled, pulling himself from his crater and prying the ookamiyoukai away from his female companion in one fluid movement. Kagome obviously saw the flare of something dangerous in his eyes because she didn’t protest the manhandling.
Kouga, on the other hand, complained loudly. “Get your hands off my woman, mutt!” Turning to look at the wolf prince, Inuyasha growled lowly, angrier than he thought he had been in a very long time. Something inside him had snapped, and nothing was going to make him back down this time. “Inu-korro,” Kouga snarled, “get your hands off of her!” Inuyasha snarled right back, canines bared and the rumbling growl beginning at his toes and working its way all the way to the tips of his ears. Kagome made a small sound of anxiety next to him, but remained otherwise silent. Inuyasha purred internally that she was deferring to him but remained outwardly angry.
Without saying another word, Inuyasha turned both he and Kagome away, walking in the opposite direction of the wolf. The insult did not go unnoticed. At first Kouga was too shocked by Inuyasha’s blatant dismissal to do much of anything but stand with his jaw hanging slightly open. He’d just been disregarded, treated as a non-threatening male. He didn’t know where to begin with his rant so he stayed silent, watching as the hanyou and miko walked away from him. He heard Kagome ask her protector what was happening and try to look back at the wolf youkai, but Inuyasha kept her attention firmly forward. The hanyou was even making Kagome ignore him! Kouga almost snapped then and there. Hakkaku and Ginta stood to either side of him, equal parts nervous and confused. “Nee-chan?” Ginta asked, his voice faint. He noticed the flinch in his leader and said no more. Obviously Kouga was still reeling.
Kagome was probably as confused as the wolf youkai standing dumbly at their prince’s side, if not more so. Inuyasha had a serious frown on his face and he was gripping her arm gently but with the distinct intent to not let her go. He marched right past Miroku, Sango, Kirara and Shippo, Kagome casting them all a helpless look when Inuyasha didn’t acknowledge them with anything more than a small nod. Apparently he was a hanyou on a mission and he was not about to be deterred, even by their friends. “Inu-Inuyasha?” she stuttered when he had all but dragged her into the sparse woods that the traveling group had just exited when they had run into Kouga and his wolves. “What on earth is going on?”
He wouldn’t look at her for a while, seemingly mulling over something very hard. When he finally did turn to look at her Kagome had to swallow a gasp of surprise. The anger that had been so prominent in his amber eyes before was now replaced by hurt. “Why do you do that?” he asked her after a long silence. The young miko stayed quiet, unsure of what he meant. Inuyasha sighed. “Why do you use the fucking word on me in front of him? Do you really want him to touch you so bad?” Kagome flinched, her upset over hurting Inuyasha turning into anger.
“No, baka! I don’t want you to hurt each other. I can’t subdue Kouga-kun, but I would if I could.” She sighed when he turned away, not believing her. “You just get so worked up and I don’t get why. What makes you think I would want Kouga-kun to… He’s just a friend, our ally.” She wasn’t sure why she felt the need to reassure the hanyou of this but the words had slipped out before she even thought about them. He snorted, telling her exactly what he thought of that. With an angry growl worthy of the inuhanyou in front of her, Kagome reached up and snagged one fluffy white ear, quickly gaining his attention. “I mean that! Why don’t you ever believe me?” she shouted, making the ear not captured in her fingers lay back against his head. He scowled down at her and waited for her to let go of his ear before he spoke.
“You always use the damn spell in front of him and you let him hold your hands and you’re nice to him and… and…” he stumbled off into irate silence, growling more to himself than at Kagome for having let it go on as long as it had. Kagome stood with her hands on her hips, tapping her foot as she waited for him to stop. “What?” he snapped in irritation. One delicate eyebrow went up at his tone, indicating she wasn’t in any better a mood than he was at the moment.
“You sound jealous.” A harsh “keh” was his only answer. Understanding his grunt for a rejection of her words, though an obvious sign that was indeed what he was feeling, Kagome sighed. “You have no right to be jealous at all, Inuyasha,” she stated. His eyes swept to hers and she could see this had hit a nerve, just like she had intended. “You have no reason to be jealous,” she continued. Inuyasha didn’t appear to agree with that either because he grunted, reaching out to grab her arm and pull her deeper into the copse of trees.
The stupid wolf and his small pack had started moving closer while they were talking, so Inuyasha had taken it upon himself to move Kagome farther away and into the shade of the trees. He wasn’t about to have this conversation interrupted. Even if he wasn’t making much of a contribution to it at the moment. “Look Kagome, it’s one thing to be nice to him and something else completely to flirt with him like you do.”
“Flirt! Who’s flirting? I’m being polite, you jerk. Honestly, Inuyasha! I can’t believe you sometimes,” she cried, blatantly shocked by his accusation. She did not like Kouga-kun like Inuyasha was implying and there was no reason for Inuyasha to think so. “I don’t run off to see Kouga-kun, I don’t try to keep you from seeing… anyone else, and I certainly don’t kiss him and make stupid promises!” Kagome’s chest was heaving after her rant and when she realized everything she had said she blushed faintly, lowering her eyes. She couldn’t believe she’d let all that out. Maybe it had just been time or maybe she’d just lost it. Either way, it was out in the open now and there was nothing she could do to take it back.
Stupid promises? Inuyasha wasn’t so dense that he didn’t know what she meant by all of that. Obviously his searches for Kikyo and his supposed promise to go with her to hell had affected Kagome more than she had let on. Part of why he looked for the other miko was to give himself peace of mind but another part of him hoped she was in fact gone so he didn’t have to go through with that believed promise. He hadn’t heard any rumors of Kikyo in so long that he’d almost forgotten that he was looking for her. At first he hadn’t been able to accept her disappearance but now he just needed proof of it so he could move on with his life. If she was dead for real this time, so be it, but if she had moved on, why couldn’t he? “I’m sorry you feel that way,” he finally whispered. Kagome wouldn’t look at him and he didn’t blame her. Why had she stuck around this long? Shaking his head, Inuyasha remembered why he’d dragged her off to talk in the first place. To show Kagome where she belonged. “But none of that matters now. You aren’t going to see the scrawny wolf anymore and… She’s gone.” Her gasp of surprise rung in his ears and her deep brown eyes shot up to lock with his.
She didn’t know whether she should be shocked at his admission, confused by his demand, or angered by his dismissal of her feelings. But somehow she didn’t feel any of these things. Inuyasha had never been good with words and certainly never was one for subtlety, so she couldn’t make herself angry at him. There was obviously something going on here that she didn’t quite understand yet. “What do you mean, Inuyasha?”
“You heard me.”
“Yes, but that doesn’t mean I understood you.” The hanyou rolled his eyes, letting out a sigh. “Will you just tell me what’s going on?”
“I’m telling you that… that you’re not allowed to see Kouga anymore and he can’t touch you either.”
“I heard that the first time. Why is that, Inuyasha?” Kagome’s patience was quickly dwindling and the last thing Inuyasha needed was for her to blow up at him, subdue him again, and walk away. He had to just outright say what he meant or she was going to leave him to spit out leaves and dirt. “I’m going to ask you one last time, Inuyasha… why are you telling me this?”
“Because I’m putting my foot down. From now on… you… I’m the only male who can touch you.” Kagome’s eyes widened before narrowing dangerously. Inuyasha rushed to explain before the painful promise in her eyes was realized by the word threatening to slip from her lips. “I’m declaring my claim as your Mate.” All the color drained from Kagome’s face and Inuyasha gasped as she dropped into his arms in a dead faint. “Kagome!” He held her close, trying to rouse her but not having much luck. She was out cold. “Damn it, Kagome. I finally tell you and you faint on me,” he muttered darkly to her unconscious form.
The stench of wolf assaulted his nose and he found himself growling threateningly before the other youkai even made an appearance. He was defending what was his and the wolf knew it. “Oi, what did you do to Kagome, Mutt? You better not have hurt her!” he barked at Inuyasha, making his way through the trees. “I can tell she’s unconscious, what’d you do?” he shouted just as he came into view. He was flanked on either side by a wolf and Inuyasha could hear the rest of his measly pack standing back near his own friends. They all seemed to know better than to approach them now, why didn’t Kouga?
“Stay out of this, Wolf. This has nothing to do with you,” the inuhanyou snarled at the intruder. He was in no mood to deal with Kouga while trying to explain things to Kagome at the same time. Not that he could explain anything to her when she was passed out in his arms.
“Nothing to do with me? That’s my woman you have your paws all over Mutt-Face!” Kouga shouted as both the wolves at his side snarled slightly, lowering themselves into a battle-ready crouch. “Kagome flattened you for a reason…”
“For the last fucking time, she ain’t your woman! Kagome’s been with me for years. I protect her, I take care of her, I feed her! What do you do, Kouga?” The wolf was slightly thrown off by that. The inuhanyou was right. Inuyasha was her main protector and caretaker, he put his life on the line for her… Kouga could only admit to having done such a thing a handful of times. Inuyasha must have done it at least a hundred in the last few years. But he treated her like shit! Kouga loved her!
“I love Kagome,” the wolf prince stated confidently.
“Do you?” Inuyasha asked with a derisive snort. “What’s her little brother’s name? What’s her favorite food? How long has she had the scar on her left knee and where did she get it?” Inuyasha watched the frown on Kouga's face grow as he tried to think of some kind of answer, answers to questions someone who knew Kagome should probably know. Needless to say he came up blank. “You don’t love her, you hardly know her.” Kouga wanted to argue… but he had nothing to say that would really help his case. Again the ookami youkai was caught off guard by the depth of the inuhanyou’s observation.
In an attempt to save his pride, he attacked the mutt where he could. “She’s kind and beautiful. What more do I need to know? At least I care about her. There’s no other woman in my life,” Kouga shot back. Both men shared a look. Kouga realized his inadvertent lie immediately after Inuyasha gave him a mild glare. Ayame was still following him around, declaring to anyone that would listen that they were to be mated as soon as he would settle down. “It was love at first sight,” he tried again, his own voice sounding lame in his ears. Both of them knew he was running out of steam and the next logical route was to fight it out like usual. But with Kagome out, neither one wanted to risk hurting her.
“Look Kouga, lay off. You know I’ve had my claim on her since before you met us. You’ve been ignoring it for years and the only reason I let it go on this long was this damn collar,” he growled, yanking on said kotodama beads, “and the fact that you are a friend. Kagome’s always trying to tell me that you’re worth keeping around. I thought it was because she liked you,” the wolf’s eyes brightened at the thought, “but she told me we need to stay on your good side to keep you as an ally. You’re a good fighter, I admit that. So either we settle this, you back off of Kagome and we stay allies, or we fight it out right now. Kagome’s out cold so she can’t use the fucking word on me and for once… I won’t hold back.” Kouga growled at the implication that Inuyasha had ever been holding back in one of their fights. He’d thought he was beating the hanyou because he was stronger, because he was a full youkai… “I ain’t afraid to kill you if I have to, wolf,” Inuyasha snarled, tucking Kagome tightly against his chest and cracking the knuckles of one hand menacingly.
“You really do mean to claim her, don’t you?” Kouga asked incredulously. Inuyasha stood a little straighter before giving his rival a decisive nod. The wolf prince was both surprised and angry. Yes, Inuyasha had had a scent claim on the young miko for years but Kouga had ignored it because he was just a hanyou. There was no way he couldn’t defeat him when the time came and take Kagome as his own. Now he had fought the silver-haired dog on several occasions and he knew that his strength rivaled his own. If Inuyasha had been holding back… “Has she agreed?” he asked in a softer voice, turning his bright blue eyes away from the hard gold ones of the man who held the woman he thought he loved.
Inuyasha seemed to falter a little. “I haven’t explained everything to her yet. She's human, she doesn’t know what it means, or how it happens.” The hanyou fought down a blush at his own statement. That wasn’t something he was quite ready to discuss with Kagome yet. They weren’t at a place in their relationship that he could tell her about the forevers and the eternities. She didn’t know how he felt, he wasn’t sure how she felt… There was a lot for them to discuss before he was ready to ask her to be his completely and to offer himself to her in the same manner.
The two stood facing one another for a long time in silence. Eventually Kouga nodded and turned his back to the inuhanyou. “You had better take care of her.”
“What have I been doing all this time?”
“You know what I mean. Don’t break her heart anymore, Mutt-face.” Inuyasha didn’t show his shock or his guilt at the wolf’s words. He knew Kagome had been hurt in the past - he was no stranger to her tears - but hearing it from someone who didn’t really know Kagome all that well made it that much more painful to hear.
“I won’t.” It was a solid promise and the wolf nodded as he finally started walking away. A ragged breath left the hanyou, mirroring the similar one released by the woman held in his arms. Inuyasha waited for Kouga to walk out of hearing range before he said anything. “It’s rude to pretend like that, Kagome,” he admonished her saltily. “Poor Kouga thought you were out the whole time.”
“You aren’t really upset about that. You’re just mad I heard you talking all soft,” she murmured as he slowly released her to stand on her own feet. The young miko’s arms stayed wrapped around his waist and Inuyasha’s eyes widened a little in alarm. “Why couldn’t you just ask like a normal guy?”
“Am I normal?” he asked with a little quirk of his lips. Kagome laughed softly and shook her head in amusement. “Kagome I…” Said young woman smiled shyly up at her hanyou and raised a gentle hand to his mouth. With a shake of her head he knew he didn’t have to say anything. At least not right now.
But we could end up brokenhearted If we don’t remember why all this started And if they try to tell you love fades with time Tell them there’s no such thing as time.
The group was kind enough not to say anything about Inuyasha and Kagome’s trip into the woods, simply taking it in stride and returning to the road once they were all sure the wolves were long gone. They had a lot of ground to cover before dark and not a whole lot of time left. The new moon was in a few days, and with Kaede’s village still a long ways off they needed to make good time. Kagome was always the biggest advocate for the decision to head home for the new moon each month with Sango and Shippo on her side. Inuyasha often complained that it was just so she could escape off to her own time but they all knew it was mostly to make sure he had somewhere safe to hide during his “night of weakness.” The two argued and bickered over it but in the end Kagome always won and they headed back to Musashi’s domain, Inuyasha’s forest and the Bone Eater’s well. Miroku was usually the one to point out the practicality of the journey since it allowed for them all to take a good night’s rest from traveling for nearly a month straight, Kagome could go home to see her family and Inuyasha was given the opportunity to wait out the new moon in relative safety.
The hanyou never wanted to acknowledge it but it made it easier to tolerate that night if they did return home since it meant Kagome was safely tucked away in her time and he didn’t have to worry as much about not being able to protect her. The hanyou glanced at his female companion and wasn’t surprised to find her watching him out of the corner of her eye. She seemed… slightly nervous around him since their talk a few hours ago. It wasn’t the kind of nervous where she jumped at his every movement or wouldn’t look at him. It was a much more interesting kind of jittery, shy, behavior where Kagome often blushed for no apparent reason. The healthy shine it gave to her cheeks made him smile internally and he found himself walking closer to her in hopes of creating that little blush more often.
It's our time. It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Her heart rate started to increase, but her mind quickly rationalized for the second time that night. The path was the exact same, she was just starting to get tired. Things at night could always be misleading if you weren’t too acquaintanced to the place. That was it, she thought as she turned to the direction she remembered coming from, even if now nothing looked familiar.
Right after she started walking again, carefully avoiding a big spider that observed her, Kagome was frozen in place a second time by what sounded like a roar in the distance that made her shiver. A jaguar? she immediately concluded she was the most stupid person ever, never foreseeing the possibility of Jaguars.
There shouldn’t be any felines so close to the tribe, but then again it was the middle of the night, so it didn’t mean they couldn’t walk around, either.
“Well, you ain’t going down without trying, Kagome”
she was now walking faster, and then running as something moved the plants right behind her, trying to gather everything she knew about the predator, which wasn’t nearly as much as she expected.
The plants kept moving behind her faster and faster and her heart started threatening coming out of her chest while she couldn’t seem to find the moonlight from the tribe’s clearing.
Throwing caution into the trash, she started making as much noise as possible and moving her flashlight in all directions in an attempt to scare whatever was after her, but soon focused on lighting the path ahead again, as the forest seemed to get denser than before — if that was even possible. Branches cut through the fabric of her clothes and her skin as well in various places, and she was glad she had put the boots before going out.
“Nononononono” she kept thinking, looking frantically at her sides, trying to find a path, any path.
Another roar, this time right behind her, and she felt her eyes burn with tears. She couldn’t die like this! She had so many things to do- so many things to learn! Besides, what would the news say? “foreign does what everyone told her not to and dies in a stupid way??”
She could hear it really close to her now, the paws breaking small branches on their way as if they were nothing, until--
The next moments went by in a haze for Kagome. She heard the plants behind ruffle as the jaguar leaped, and as she turned around, something very strong hit her back and she was falling, her flashlight flying out of her hand while she hit her head on a tall root on the ground. She could see something, a flash..White? Was that moonlight? But her eyes closed against her will, and she heard faded grunts, as if something or someone was fighting the jaguar.
Then everything faded.
She woke up an unknown amount of time later, massaging her nape and feeling the worst headache she ever had, but quickly looking to the sides: her flashlight was right beside her, a bit screwed up, but it would survive, and other than a ton of small scratches and cuts she sure needed to take care of, she seemed intact - a miracle, if she might’ve said so. There were no signs of jaguars anywhere.
Inspecting her surroundings a bit better, she found herself in a clearing, but past it she could see the forest opening up and, a bit further in the distance, the ocas! The view seemed to be in the complete opposite direction from her camp, but that was definitely the right tribe alright. Looking around once more, however, her heart skipped a beat when she saw, partly hidden by the shadows, a man- no, a tribe warrior, for sure.
He was leaning against a tree, weapon in arms and eyes closed in deep sleep. He wasn’t from that specific tribe, she was sure, because his markings didn’t look like the ones the locals used, but that wasn’t the most impressive thing about him. Was his hair white? Or silver... She squinted, her headache was getting stronger by the minute and it must’ve been making her see things. Were those dog ears??
Her heart was beating like crazy and she was sure to be on the verge of a panic attack, but her body seemed to have it’s own agenda as she approached him and raised a hand intend on touching. There was a small jolt going through her palm that went unnoticed as she closed the distance, but his skin felt hot and smooth, and she was so focused on the feeling and the ears that she didn’t notice when he ever so slightly leaned into her touch.
It almost felt like a dream and she couldn’t stop the squeak that came out of her mouth when out of nowhere a very real, clawed and strong hand held her wrist. The man opened his eyes, and she could swear they were glowing, reflecting the light coming from the clearing as if he was a cat. His touch felt like fire, and all of a sudden her stomach turned around real bad as panic sunk in and she couldn’t quite make out what he was telling her before passing out.
“Just fucking great” Inuyasha said as he held her, letting the spear fall to the side. It’s not like he would use it again, anyway. He was mad that she put herself in harm's way, but apparently asking what the heck she was doing there alone was just too much for the human to handle.
After trying to run away from the vision the Moon gave him, Inuyasha had gone all the way to the Amazon just to find out someone doing the dumbest thing he saw anyone do in a forest in the last 50 years or so: trying to outrun a jaguar. As if they had a chance. He was feeling generous, though, and needed something to take his mind out of the dream, so he decided to help —the cat wasn’t even that much of a fight, after all.
But after it was all done, his blood froze his veins as he went back to help her. Looking as if nothing had ever happened - well, aside from a few scratches and the dumb decision making - there she was, an immaculate vision of Kagome. His Kagome. He was even more certain it was her after a faint electricity jolt went through him as he touched her, a lingering effect of the bonding they had started before Onigumo cursed her, and that they never finished.
And yet here she was now, fainting in his arms from fear at the mere sight of him. That was precisely what he was trying to avoid by running away from her all this time. It was enough that the bit of her soul left inside of him almost drove him mad several times by letting him feel when she died and was reborn, over and over.
He couldn’t bear finding out she was disgusted by him or feared him in a new life — he tried it once and it didn’t go well. She didn’t deserve to go through that, and neither did him. Their time was over, and he just had to live with it. She was better off without him.
But he knew very well destiny was cruel.
“What do I do with you..” Sighing, he took her to camp going around the tribe, trying to avoid the shaman who always felt his presence. He would let her live her life as if none of that had happened — and so would he. Gently leaning her on the tent that smelled like her and someone else, he kept enough resolve to back out into the forest...
...And make a turn to jump onto one of the tallest trees nearby, satisfied that it both concealed him and gave him a view of the camp. Just to be sure she’d get proper care, and then he would go away for good. Final words.
He was so fucking screwed.

Across time | Akaashi Keiji x F!reader [soulmate!AU]
for this one i tried a little bit of world building to put more context into some stuff as i suck at accurate and realistic historical aeras, this ended up being WAY longer than planned oof also YES i 100% took the well idea from Inuyasha👉🏽👈🏽
- Moeru Fukuro means blazing owl
- au where the reader finds themselves enamored far beyond the limits of alternate timeline and universes
[Tags] : @raevaioli @chenle @lcaita and @lceiji
- it was all because of a stupid dare
- it's a shame you agreed to do anything when more than 50$ were on the line (O.O)
- your friends from high school thought it seemed like SUCH a good idea to dare you to spend 3 hours in the woods next to your house in exchange for 60$
- the 3 hours of course starting from midnight
- but you weren't one to back down from that kind of stuff
- no sir
- the only thing you had to do was to wait by the abandoned well surrounded by trees without anything to distract you (you trusted them with your phone anyway)
- tonight wasn't even that cold anyway
-so here you were, waiting for time to pass as you listened to the sounds around you
- you found it absolutly mesmerizing, how everything around you had its own identity through the sounds made
- you had always felt calmer in moments like these, by yourself at nighttime, just taking everything in
- you had been to this well many times before, the old lady who lived accross from your appartment told you that it was used as a wishing well most of the time
- she spoke of how many people through the times had thrown coins into the unsettling darkness of the pit and wished for true love and stuff like that
- the other day, you had found her there and she told you about how that very same well helped her meet her soulmate
- you hardly believed her
- the wishing part ? Okay. It's a normal thing to throw coins into fountains and wells and pray for things. But soulmates ? That seemed like a reach
- so you felt pretty dumb for staring into the dark pit of most likely freezing water as intensely
- you also felt pretty dumb for making sure that you brought a coin with you on this outting
- okay maybe......the idea of finding your soulmate was not so repulsive.... (◡‿◡✿)
- you didn't hope it would work too hard but still.....just sayin that it would be nice
- so, you threw the coin, listening to its sound as it came in contact with the water at the bottom after a long fall and you started praying
- "i don't really know how this is supposed to be done but....if the stories are true can i please meet the love of my life ? If not possible i also accept checks and cash (▰˘◡˘▰)"
- you didn't really mean the money part
- but you know.....getting rich isn't that bad
- at that moment you felt smart for bringing a hoodie because ???? The wind was extremely strong all of a sudden like ?? Sheesh
- you were about to sit down and cuddle into your hoodie for warmth but then u SWORE U HEARD A VOICE COMING FROM THE WELL
- and you aint crazy but you're about dumb enough to lean your head above the opening to hear better
- i think you know where this is going....
- the wind's strength had you tumbling down the well in no time
- time seemed to slow down as you plummeted toward the surface of the water
- soon you came in contact with it, cold soaking your clothes and hurting all the way to your bones. You could see the moon thru the suprisingly clear water as well as the bubbles from your last reserve of air, all this caused you to pass out.
- in the capital of the kingdom MoeruFukuro, they were many things ; from kind townfolks, to golden rice paddies and from a gorgeous royal castle to roaming forest demons
- you heard me right
- the lands around were infested by demons and spirited who manifested at night, some benevolant and others not so much
- thankfully for the royal priest Tsukishima's magical talismans placed all around the town, the people could leave in peace, the malignant creatures knowing better than trying to overcome the spells
- the capital could pride itself all around the country for having ones of the most powerful and smart array of people there ever were in addition to being prosperous from the folks' trade businesses
- for example, in the royal palace, you could find as forementionned priest and mage; Tsukishima Kei, legend has it that he was blessed by Kaguya, the goddess of the moon herself in order to have such knowledge of spells
- there was also General Kuroo Tetsurou, who had his fair share of tales and admirers alike, the biggest one being the one in which he had saved a thousand men from a demon by sacrificing himself, earning its respect and protection in battle
- obviously there was the crowned prince, Bokuto Koutaro. Well he might seem a little air headed and childish at first sight but he takes his duties very seriously even if they consist in little things such as gathering the peoples' eventual complaints himself, some people going as far as saying that he is the closest thing to a god on earth
- and then, wherever Bokuto went, it would be near impossible to forget about his right arm and advisor, the wise and renowned astronomer Akaashi Keiji. If Tsukishima had been blessed by the moon goddess then many people believed that Akaashi was the one who tought Omoikane, god of wisdom and intelligence himself, everything he knew. He was everything people wished they were, calm, good looking, creative, reasonable and intelligent beyond mesure. No wonder he was the one Bokuto trusted the most by his side
- studying the sky also brought Akaashi much knowledge on seasons and the movements of stars and such, providing help to both the people and Tsukishima
- Akaashi did not live in the castle however, well technically yes but he did have a workshop of his own a bit farther in the territory, where he could dedicate himself to staring at the night sky he loved so very very much from his makeshift observatory/rooftop
- he also had a lovely well near his observation tower that Tsukishima had passive agressively insisted on cleansing for him (>.<)
- so there he was, in this particularly enchanting night
- something about that full moon, shining stars and clear sky just about almost got some tears out of him
- but he was interrupted when he heard a low growl from beneath his observation tower
- naturally he looked down to where it came from and saw a fire fox spirit inching suspiciously close to an unconscious girl on the ground near the well
- the demons avoided the talismans yes but that far from the heart of the city trickster spirits and ghouls could just about do as much chaos as they pleased
- rushing to get down, Akaashi took his bow and arrows ready to get rid of the spirit and make sure the girl, no matter how strange her clothes looked like, was safe
- it was fast work, his arrows reaped through the night air seemingly at lighting speed and quickly made the spirit disappear
- muttering a small banishing prayer he picked up the passed out girl and brought her on top of his observatory
- she was dry but she was still shivering from the cold
- "she must not be used to the cold" thought the young astronomer, taking off his haori to put on top of her frame and sitting down next to her, looking downwards at her now relaxed features
- he did not know why he brought her up there but right now it just felt right. So he went on with looking at the sky, resting his hands flat on the ground near his sides
- you were awake, enough to feel a warmth next to you but not enough to open your eyes yet
- you thought that you'd fallen asleep after making the wish and that your friends had carried you back to your room or something
- but it was to cold to be true
- you peaked slightly from between your lashes and were met with a GORGEOUS night sky
- usually in your city, the sky was too polluted to be able to see that many
- and the full moon seemed closer than usual, bewitching, enchanting, almost asking you to come to her, so in a way you did
- now fully awake, you outstretched your hand toward the celestial body, not really thinking in the moment
- "you're awake ! How are you feeling ?" said a silvery soft voice, almost similar to a whisper
- so similar you thought that you were still dreaming as it was the same one you've heard before imagining falling into the well
- your train of thought was quickly cut short by the feeling of warm hands around your own outstreched one
- oh this was definitly real
- you sat up im a swift movement, looking around you and only seeing trees and rice paddies, as well as the lights of a town in the distance
- you almost didn't hear the man's voice over your own rapidly beating heart
- almost
- "Everything's okay now, calm down" he said, probably noticing your panic and rubbing his thumb over your knuckles
- his words seemed to immediatly sink into your very soul at the second they came out of his mouth, and worst is that you thought that if it meant to be marked in such a way you would be glad to have your soul inked all over with just his words
- but you still didn't know him so you kept that thought to yourself
- "who are you and where am i ?" Your voice was so shaky and your mind so foggy that you weren't even sure if they ever made it out of your throat
- but Akaashi heard you loud and clearer than anything before, just touching your hand had seemed like such a common task but the needle like sensation that ran up his whole arm begged to differ, he regained his composure fast though
- "my name's Akaashi Keiji and you're in the kingdom of MoeruFukuro" he made sure to speak as softly as possible, never letting go of your hand, fearing that maybe, if he let go you would disappear back into the wind
- ".....my name's Y/N L/N....listen i don't think im supposed to be here- well more like...now"
- "what do you mean ?"
- and so you explained to him how you actually came from the 21st century in what you could only assume to be another timeline and universe, trying to sound as calm as possible
- because well, you weren't dumb, and castle as "cool and fantasy anime looking like that" were not so common
- Akaashi kept drinking in your voice, painfully aware of every movement of your face, every little speaking quirk and tones, never breaking contact
- he was fast in reassuring you on his own world, he spoke of his life, of his friends and of the castle, not leaving out the fact that demons and spirits were a common factor, carefully choosing his phrasing and explaining with the most concise words
- explaining so well that you felt as if you already knew all these things, deep in yourself
- and time passed
- you soon found yourself laying on you back, fingers still intertwined with the royal astronomer, talking about your lives, as if you were desperatly but as easily as breathing trying to make the other remember your existence, trying to get a part of your souls back
- the silence of the night made your voices reach the other in an almost pieircing melody, the deep blue and silver sky as your only witness of this moment
- "so you're an astronomer right.....why do you like the stars so much Keiji ?"
- oh man did he love hearing you say his name, it sounded like the rarest music he's ever heard coming from you
- "i guess it just comes easily to me....i've never felt lonely in the castle, my friends are supportive and strong even though i've never been particularly good with people....when i come here for reasons other than work and stare at the sky, it feels like im finally walking in my own feelings, finally able to search for something that i somehow always wanted..."
- he turned to your face and swore that he saw many more stars in your eyes than he has in his whole life and continued on
- " it feels- it felt like trying to find a part myself that had been fragmented and thrown into the universe....a part of myself that was very much more human than i thought"
- "oh" was all you could muster between that and the flood of feelings that was inside your heart
- you felt like you were running out of time.
- you felt like you had to make the most out of this precise instant.
- you suddenly jerked up, making Akaashi jump at the sudden move
- he sat up with you, facing you, unsure of what that was all about
- " Keiji !" You said, full of determination despite the advanced hour of the night, and when he nodded and smiled, humming slightly as response you took it as your greenlight to continue
- " Let's find each other again ! Whether it be in this life or another ! We're bounded together now and im sure whichever gods brought me to you will make it happen again no matter what. So you have to promise me before it's too late....don't forget about me !"
- Akaashi's eyes bore into yours with as much intensity as yours and returning the smile you wore on your face
- he let go off your hand for the first time that night and you felt as if an invisible countdown just started somewhere
- he took of a teal and marine blue colored thread bracelet that he wore and put in on your wrist, it had a small crescent moon symbol made of nacre on it....how in character
- how....him
- "there. That way i won't ever forget you. I sure hope you don't forget about me either"
- the last thing your remembered was the gorgeous yet so undoubtfully sad smile of the astronomer before waking up, warm, in your own bed
- you looked around in a hurry and little did you know, you were back into your appartment's bedroom
- you figured it was just a dream
- and yet your heart was still beating against your ribcage and tears were stinging your eyes
- you looked at your phone to check the time since the sun had already went up and your eyes fell on the bracelet you were wearing on your wrist
- you wasted no time in DASHING out of your appartment straight to the old lady's, well too aware that what had happened last night was definitely not a dream
- as you rung the doorbell you were too busy trying to calm your heart that was still trying to beat out of your chest to hear an all too familiar voice from inside the appartment saying "i'll take this"
- the door opened and you almost fainted
- "hi ! Im Akaashi Keiji your new neighbor from next door.....have we met before ?"
#okay im actually quite proud of this one#AT SOME POINT I ACCIDENTALLY DELETED A WHOLE PARTY AND HAD TO REWRITE IT SO PLEASE#HAVE MERCY#haikyuu!!#haikyuu x reader#akaashi haikyuu#akaashi keiji x reader#akaashi hcs#akaashi imagine#akaashi angst#akaashi au

In Between: Finale
You guys have absolutely no idea how much research and work went into this fic. I’ve had to clear my Google search history on multiple occasions because it just looked sketchy as fuck and my FBI agent was probably getting real sick of my shit.
I really wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who’s read this story, and even those who are just reading it now. I can hardly begin to describe the gratitude I feel. The reviews and keyboard smashes and simple comments saying, “......fuck.” were all so amazing and appreciated, and also very rewarding! Thank you all so much!
Also I want it noted, just for my own pride, that the fighting/martial arts mentioned in chapter 4 and coming up in this chapter are actually choreographed. Like, I got the fuck up out of my seat and physically choreographed the scenes. I’m trained in some martial arts so I did my best to apply that to my writing, and I’m really glad no one walked in on me throwing hands at the air.
Okay, I’m done rambling! I hope you enjoy the conclusion to In Between! Thank you so much for reading!
Previous chapters can be found in my fic masterlist, as well as on AO3 and ff.net.
----------
Inuyasha stirred as a shiver crawled over his skin, discomfort disturbing his sleep and waking him as he blinked his eyes open with a meager grunt. The apartment was still mostly dark, save for the light from the momentarily-blinding rays from the television, but he figured the sun was beginning its ascent into the sky from the way distant sounds were reaching his ears once more. He closed his eyes, knowing he wouldn't fall back asleep but unwilling to allow the lethargy to leave just yet. He could already feel the ache in his neck from sleeping on the couch, but it still wasn't enough motivation to get him to move any more than wiggling his foot to check and see that Kagome was still nearby. When his toes brushed nothing but air, he reached a little further and grazed the rough texture of a throw pillow.
Perking his head up, he blinked a few times to focus his vision on the vacant side of the sofa. Inuyasha took in the scents of the room, her aroma still around but diminished. It wasn't fresh. Reality began to sink in as he curled up to a sitting, an unnerving sensation tingling within his stomach as he swiveled his head to look about the room. The bathroom door was open. The TV's volume was set low to a mumble. Her scent wasn't stronger no matter which way he faced. Kagome was gone.
He jumped from the couch, growling a curse as he snatched his phone from the counter to check for any notifications. Nothing. There were no abnormal odors around; no one had come inside. What the fuck could have possibly happened while he slept? This was why he hated letting his guard down on the night of the new moon. Too much got past him. Too much could occur that he had very limited power to prevent. Inuyasha dialed Kagome's number, putting the call on speaker as he stormed out of the apartment, following her feint scent down the stairs and toward the lobby. It went to voicemail.
"Kagome, where the fuck are you!? Answer your phone!" He demanded at the beep. He kept pace down the stairwell, immediately hitting redial and calling her cell again. Voicemail. He hung up that time, his bare feet slapping against the tile of the small lobby. Her scent led out the door and he damn near halted in his tracks from the way his entire body went violently rigid. She left the building completely. Hours ago, and it wasn't by force. How fucking stupid do you have to be not to understand how horrible of an idea that was? What could have compelled her? Jesus, why did she leave?
Inuyasha was fuming, his nose suddenly catching a horrendous stench as he stomped forward and threw the door open, bringing him to a stop right there in the doorway. It was familiar and recent, and he realized he'd been so hyper focused on Kagome's scent that he almost completely missed this one. A painful ache churned inside of him. The scents of the two didn't mix, and he was becoming more and more disturbed as he tried to figure out what the hell was going on. Inuyasha flinched as his deafening ringtone went off in his hand, forgetting he'd turned it all the way up just after turning human the night before. Kagome's name and contact picture had the screen coming to life, her bright smile only making him all the more furious.
"Are you fucking kidding me right now!?" He answered, stepping back inside and dropping the door.
"Woah," A deep voice on the opposite end drawled, smooth and low. "Is that any way to greet an old friend?"
An unbearable chill washed over Inuyasha's body, each muscle quaking as it passed through, keeping him glued in place as his stomach gradually turned to lead, weighing heavily within his own abdomen.
"It's been a long time, Inuyasha." He said his name slow, enunciating every syllable.
"What - how did you..."
"Oh, it was easy. She's much like you, you see. She has a hero complex. Texted her saying I was Kikyo and in trouble, and she waltzed on out the door to save her. Didn't even have to come up with a sob story to twist her leg a bit."
It dawned on him that he'd never told her. Of course, she didn't know any better, Kagome thought Inuyasha was still on the lookout for Kikyo. This was his fault.
"Let her go." Inuyasha ordered, the words clenched in his throat. His teeth ground tight causing his demand to come out as more of a deep, guttural growl than a clear bark, and the chuckle from the psychopath in the receiver had his blood boiling over and pumping searingly through each vein of his body.
"I'm sorry, I didn't get that."
"LET HER GO!" He bellowed, the shout echoing in the lobby he stood in. "You want me, you've got me! She has nothing to do with this!"
"You'll just have to come and get her." Naraku laughed. There was a muffled scream in the background, and Inuyasha's ears inadvertently pinned to his head. It wasn't close, it sounded far off; like Naraku was standing a good distance away, but nonetheless, it came from Kagome and it caused something to stir excruciatingly within him.
"Awe, did you hear that?" Naraku taunted, his voice knocking up an octave. "I think she's saying, "Come save me. Come save me, Inuyasha." Oof, she's a feisty one."
Inuyasha couldn't tell what was happening. As he was talking, he'd heard Kagome's grunts getting louder, like Naraku had moved closer to her. Then he suddenly lurched away, the oof more of a reaction sound than anything.
"Where the fuck are you!?"
"In all the time we've spent together, have I ever given you an answer that easily?"
Inuyasha struck a nearby wall, his fist easily punching through the drywall material. "I'm not playing these games again!"
"If you want your precious Kagome back, you will. Don't worry, I'm not completely heartless. I left you a clue to give you a head start. I'm sure I'll be seeing you soon, Inuyasha."
The line went dead, three dull beeps signifying so.
Immediately, Inuyasha stormed after the repugnant smell. He curved around the corner to the three adjacent walls of mailboxes labeled specifically pertaining to each unit, his ember eyes landing on the polaroid picture taped to his own. He ripped it off, his mouth parting as he took in the low-quality, scratchy sight of Kagome on her knees on the dingy, damp, brown floor. Her dark hair was wild, covering a good portion of her face as she looked into the camera, shadowed eyes hidden beneath deeply-furrowed brows. Her hands were tied in front of her, a rope cinched around her wrists in what looked like a double column. The ends were loose along the floor, secured around a nearby, metal support beam. Her mouth was covered with silver duct tape, which explained how muffled her cries sounded, and it took everything in Inuyasha's power not to look away from the picture. Instead, he pulled it closer to his face, he studied her surroundings, the rusted beams lined in a row, the weeds that had grown through the cracks in the ground, the graffiti littering the distant wall in the very corner of the photo. It looked like an abandoned warehouse, but it was hard to tell. The place was dark, making details even more difficult to make out, Kagome seemingly illuminated by the camera's flash.
He racked his brain for all the abandoned warehouses he knew of in the city, all the abandoned warehouses he may have had a run in at. If this was a clue, then he knew the place; there was hardly anything else that he could note in the picture that would give it away. He had to know where she was, so where the fuck was she? What warehouse could potentially play a significant role in tying he and Naraku together?
There was one east of town in an industrial area. There had been an accident there years ago and the place shut down. There was one near the lake off a winding road that was overgrown with shrubbery by now. He hadn't been there, personally, but he knew Sango and Hojo busted a sex operation at that location. There was a warehouse immediately south of him, but it was recently purchased by a construction company so it was inhabited and he couldn't imagine Naraku getting away with stocking a person along a support beam in plain sight. Inuyasha flipped on his cellphone flashlight, holding it to the picture to reach for any additional detail he could scrounge up that the dim lighting provided in the mailroom couldn't help reveal, desperate to find anything, his sharp eyes landing on the hint of yellow graffiti in the upper left corner on the distant wall.
It hit him like a flying brick. He knew where she was.
County Jail - One hour earlier -
"He's been screaming to get you guys down here for hours. He refused to calm down until we called you."
"Has he said what this is about?"
"Just that it was important and you'd want to hear this. He's in here." The guard opened the door, a disheveled Byakuya sitting in a seat at the table, cuffed hands shaking on top of the metal surface. His violet eyes shot up at her, perturbation written into the deep lines beneath his eyes. His lawyer stood mere inches from him, his chin raising indignantly as they entered the room and the guard shut the door behind them.
"Alright, you've got us here. What was it you wanted?" Kagura asked, setting her briefcase down on the table as she took a seat across from them. Sango sat in the neighboring chair, her eyes studying the angsty criminal.
"I'm ready to talk." He admitted as his attorney joined them, his expression stone cold and straight. "Naraku, he - he's about to make his move. Today. He's gonna do something today, he's been going on about it for months. It's going to be on the nine year anniversary of his arrest, that's what he said. That's today!"
"What is he going to do?" Sango firmly asked, inching inward as the suspense in the room intensified.
"I-I don't know." He shook his head, his heightened nerves evident in the chatter of his jaw. "I just know he's going to do something reckless! I mean, this is Naraku we're talking about! We don't need to add to his kill count, maybe we can stop him in time!"
"Where is he, Byakuya!?" She asked, more fervor to her tone, enunciating each word that left her lips.
"Now that's where I have to stop you. We've yet to strike a deal." Gatenmaru interjected, his hand held up to halt all conversation. "What do you got?" He directed the question to Kagura.
She held herself professionally, unfazed by the inquiry as she sat up tall and answered, "Seventeen years without parole."
"Let's be real, you and I both know that's not the best you can give. Try again." There was challenge glimmering in his slanted, black eyes.
"He's being charged with aggravated assault, aiding and harboring a fugitive, and accessory to murder. Seventeen years is what's on the table. Take it."
"Accessory to murder?" Gatenmaru guffawed. "He wasn't even aware the murder took place. That charge won't hold in court."
"Oh, I'm pretty sure it will considering it never would have happened had your client not helped his brother escape from the institution."
"No." Byakuya cut in, his eyes staring widely at the table beneath his forearms. "No! No! No! You know damn well that's not what I care about!" He shouted, Gatenmaru staring back at him with an expression that said he knew better for his client.
"Give us a moment, we'll work it all out."
"No!" He darted his sharp and direct gaze across to Sango, and she almost flinched from the desperation behind it. "I don't care about my sentence, I'll do my time! I don't care if I never see the light of day again, just - don't - kill - him."
"What?"
"Don't kill him! No matter what, do not kill him! Please! He can get better with medication, can't he? Give him another chance! That's all I want!"
Her mouth parted, the skin of her lips slowly peeling open, stunned from his powerful plea. It wasn't practical, though. She knew it, and the riddling stiffness of the prosecuting attorney seated next to her told her Kagura knew it as well. "I promise we will do everything in our power to have Naraku safely apprehended."
"That's not what I asked for! I want complete assurance that your team wont exercise commonly-known police brutality against my mentally ill brother! Promise me that!"
"Byakuya, I can't." She stated carefully. "I hear you, I understand exactly what you're worried about. It's never in our mission to kill a perp, please recognize that. Our number one goal is and always will be the safety of everyone involved. Sometimes, though, things don't work out that way-"
"Well, make sure it does!"
"If Naraku is in a manic state and poses a threat, our team may be given orders to take him down any way that we can. That's just the reality of it. I swear, I will do everything I can to avoid violence."
"That's not good enough!"
"We're wasting time, Byakuya!"
"You think I'll personally help send in a sniper to shoot my brother down!?"
"The sooner you tell me, the sooner we can get to Naraku! Like you said, maybe we can stop him in time! But that window may close if you don't tell us what you know!"
"You don't have to tell them!" Gatenmaru intervened.
"And you can't aid in the obstruction of justice! Back off, Gatenmaru, or I'll personally make sure you're disbarred!" Kagura snapped, darting a warning glare at the defense attorney.
"Byakuya, give us a chance to give Naraku a chance! You've gotta work with me, this is the only way the odds can potentially be in our favor!"
He stared at her, lips pressed together in a restrained snarl. It wasn't good enough for him. Unless he had a written and signed agreement that his brother wouldn't be harmed in his arrest, he refused to comply. Sango seemed sincere, but he didn't trust her. She was a cop. She was a dirty, careless, tyrant of a cop that liked to wave her power in the air like a picket sign. She couldn't fool him, but he could definitely fool her.
He controlled his expression, softening the disbelief in his scowl to appear as convincing as possible. He even sagged his shoulders in defeat, observing as Sango leaned forward for the information he was about to give. "He's at the warehouse by the lake. Off of McArther Road.”
—
Inuyasha shoved a small, loaded pistol into his boot, concealing it beneath his jeans as he hastily double checked that the Glock was still strapped to his hip. He grabbed his badge off the bedside table, clipping it to his side as he snagged the phone he'd dropped on his bed and dialed his partner.
Koga picked up on the second ring, opening his car door and stepping out as he pressed the cell to his ear.
"Bad timing." He answered.
"Meet me at the warehouse at the county line." Inuyasha gruffly said. He seemed breathless, like he'd had the wind knocked out of him. There was an edge of panic in his tone, aiding in the bite behind the order. Koga couldn't stifle the confusion that wrinkled his forehead. What was happening? Why was he coincidentally being pulled to one warehouse when he'd just shown up at another with an entire armed squad.
"What's going on?"
"He's got Kagome!"
"How!?"
"I don't have time to explain! I'm leaving now! I don't know how long it'll take me to get there since I don't have a fucking car, but-"
"How do you know where she is!?" Koga kept out of the swarm of specialists and cops, keeping his hot tone as hushed as possible as he stepped behind a swat truck for an inkling of privacy. His instincts had been telling him something was incredibly off since Sango called them all in before the butt crack of dawn, but he couldn't put his finger on what it was exactly, dismissing it as the climactic ending to this overdrawn affair with Naraku. There was a heavy weight on his chest now, discomposing him even further.
"Because," Inuyasha growled. "I just got off the phone with Naraku not even five minutes ago! He left me a picture, and she's tied up in a warehouse and the only logical one is at the base of the woods!"
"No, Inuyasha, that doesn't make sense! Byakuya told us he's in the warehouse by the lake! We just pulled up, everyone's getting into position to swarm the mother fucker!"
"I don't have time to prove otherwise! Whether you come or not, I'm going to save Kagome!"
"Inuyasha, no! He wants you! You'll get yourself killed!"
"He has her, Koga." Inuyasha ground out a restrained sigh, answering steadily. "As long as she's safe, I don't care what happens to me."
The call ended and the wolf demon didn't hesitate in his course of action. Shoving the phone into his pocket, he ran over to where Sango and Totosai stood, going over their plan of execution at the hood of one of their black cars.
"Inuyasha called. Naraku has Kagome. He thinks they're at the warehouse on the opposite side of town; at the county line."
"What!? How!?" Sango reacted, her shocked expression trickling fear.
"I don't have those details, but there's a huge chance our little rat lied to us. Inuyasha's on his way there now. We've gotta back him up."
"We cant leave until we make sure the premises is clear." Totosai firmly stated. "Inuyasha may be wrong."
"Or Inuyasha may be taking on Naraku alone." Koga said.
"Go." The chief nodded after a very small moment. "I want you communicating the entire time. The moment we get out of this warehouse, we'll head your way."
Koga spun around, running back to his car to speed back out to the main street. The moment his tires connected with the concrete at the base of the long, winding road, he flipped on his lights and blaring sirens, racing to cross town as quickly as possible. It was still the early morning; the streets weren't too inhabited. Still, there were plenty of crossroads he needed to slow for, and each time he pressed on his brakes he felt more and more trepidation trickle over him.
Inuyasha's lungs were burning, his chest heaving, sweat dripping from his forehead and over the bridge of his nose as he looked over the weathered warehouse on the opposite side of the chainlink fence. Windows lined the higher portion of the walls, some broken and blocked off with cardboard, some filthy and impossible to even catch a glare with. He studied the few clear ones, checking for visible signs of life that may have been watching him from the second story at the end of the dirt and weed-occupied yard.
He could smell the two of them, their scents clashing obnoxiously within his olfactory system. There were traces of sweat. Plenty of it. He tried ignoring the damp smell of water that had been sitting for too long; he figured that exact odor would taint his nostrils when he noted the small puddles near Kagome in the picture. Most importantly, he did not smell a smidge of blood, fresh or old. It should have been a relief, but it didn't mean a thing with this criminal. He didn't know how long she'd been alone with Naraku, but he heard her in the background while they spoke on the phone. She was alive forty-five minutes ago. At the same time, that was forty-five minutes where anything could have happened to her.
Just as he was about to push through the unlatched gate, one hand prepared on the pistol in the holster on his hip, he heard the tread of tires nearing, the gravel along the ground grinding beneath Koga's heavy halt. Thankfully, the sirens were already silenced, and as he ripped the keys from the ignition, he'd flipped off the lights as well.
Inuyasha jogged to meet him half way, the both of them kneeling behind some shrubbery to stay as out of view as possible. Naraku knew he was coming, but he didn't need to know he brought backup. If they could keep the element of surprise, the odds would be more favorable for them.
"So, what the fuck happened?" Koga asked, keeping his voice low as he pulled the gun from his side and flipped the safety off. He was fully equipped in his bulletproof vest and windbreaker, the collar of his white shirt poking from beneath.
"I don't know - I don't fucking know. It was the new moon last night, I fell asleep, and apparently Naraku somehow tricked her into thinking Kikyo was in trouble, so she snuck out to help by herself instead of waking me up."
"Kikyo-"
"Yeah, I didn't tell her." He venomously interjected, wanting to cut that part of the discussion off at the knees. "It doesn't matter right now. I don't know how long they've been alone, and I don't know what he's done to her. I don't smell blood, and when he called me, I heard her in the background. That was almost an hour ago, though."
"She's alive, don't worry." Koga tried reassuring, giving him as unwavering of a look as possible. Inuyasha only spared him a small glance, ember eyes vehement with anxiety and rage, tearing his sights away to study the warehouse from the edge of the bushes.
Kagome gave another tug to the skillfully-tied knot around the support beam, her fingers struggling from the trembling she couldn't suppress. Her nails caught onto the rough rope, catching and losing grip, catching and losing grip, snagging and almost breaking. Before trying again, she whipped her head around, observing her immediate surroundings to make sure her captor wasn't coming back yet, air pressing out of her nose like she'd just finished running a lap. Still clear. She fiddled with the knot again, trying to hurry, a flutter in her chest making her feel like Onigumo could appear any second.
No.
His name was Naraku. She needed to remember that. He was a manipulative liar, and Onigumo didn't exist.
Her nails flicked off of the tight rope painfully and she clenched her tongue to the roof of her mouth to stifle the gasp she almost gave. It wasn't budging. The rope cinched around her wrists was too secure to slip through, and the more she'd tried, the more she felt the material digging into her skin. Her hands were a furious red from the many attempts of using her weight to pull away from the beam she was restrained to, the slack in the rope attached to the middle column of the wrist tie only allotting her about three feet of distance. It was no use. Despite all of her struggling and fighting to make tying her down as difficult as possible, he still prevailed by knocking her head against the pole she was held captive to, debilitating her long enough to get the rope attached. She was partially successful, though, and any feat is better than nothing right now. He'd initially tried restraining her hands behind her back, but all the flailing she did didn't allow him to.
Approaching footsteps alerted her to stop, carefully watching the direction they were coming from. The abandoned building wasn't completely empty, stacks of freight slabs and wooden crates filling multiple areas of the large room, making it impossible to see around the corner he'd disappeared behind ten minutes ago. There were small puddles of old, murky water here and there from openings in the ceiling, bits of trash littering the floor, and broken, molding wood that had crumbled from the second story. As the echoing grew louder, a sloshing sound coming from a tiny pool he must have stomped through, she tried to hold herself as casually as possible, stepping in towards the beam to allow slack in the rope. She didn't want it to appear as if she had been trying to escape; she didn't know if it would be the thing to set him off.
Naraku rounded the bend, swiping his dirty hands through his short, choppy, black hair. He was wearing a long sleeve, black thermal that raised and exposed an inch of his midriff as he lifted his arm, his ripped jeans a faded blue that bunched and disappeared beneath tightly-strapped boots. The man gave her a sealed-lipped grin the pursed just a little, cocking his head as he sauntered towards the small, upside-down crate he'd taken residence on before.
"Sorry, had to piss." He shrugged, squatting down.
Kagome could do nothing more than stare at him. Watch as he watched her. Observe as he took the long kitchen knife from the side of his boot and dragged his rough-looking thumb over the dull edge of the blade.
"Y'know," He spoke, his voice deep and smooth. "Inuyasha should be here soon, I presume. He'll be so relieved to see you're not hurt."
He stood, slowly making his way over to her, the knife glistening with the early rays of sunlight that peeked through the opened, side door. She backed up as he neared, her shoulder blade brushing the metal beam, and his smile grew wider.
"Oh, don't be afraid, don't be afraid. You know you're just a casualty in all of this, Kagome." Naraku slid his calloused hands over the side of her face, the sweat plastered on her skin from the unwavering stress feeling sticky and moist as he caressed the apple of her cheek with his thumb. She couldn't help the shaky whines that escaped her throat as he touched her, as he gripped both cheeks between his fingers and squeezed to get her to stop turning away from him. The sturdy tape on her mouth crinkled with his aggression, pulling at her sensitive flesh.
"I never wanted to hurt you." He whispered. "Now I do. It would be a waste not to at this point. And if I do it just as your half breed boyfriend shows up, oh, he'd cry like a little baby, wouldn't he?"
Kagome whimpered, her brows crinkling as she tried to shake her head no, to plead with him, but he kept her restrained. Naraku shushed her, a smirk pursing his lips further, the gleam in his red eyes showing thorough enjoyment from her spiking panic.
"What do you think he'd do at the sight of your blood, huh? Think he'd freeze? Go into a blind fury? Think he'd scream your name like bloody murder? Oh, the thought of it all just gets me so hot." He raised the knife to her face, grazing the smooth side of the dangerous blade over her cheekbone and temple, taunting her skin. "I want Inuyasha to die in pain - and not just physical. I don't want him just writhing in agony from a stab wound or two. I want him bleeding from the inside out. I want him begging for mercy because his mind and heart are about to explode from helplessly watching his whore get murdered." Naraku pulled back an inch or two, taking the kitchen knife and leisurely licking up the sharp edge, wincing minutely as blood seeped from the slice in his tongue. His Adams apple bobbed as he swallowed the copper liquid, his lips quickly lining scarlet red.
Dropping the knife to the ground, Naraku pinned Kagome's jaw between both hands, holding her hostage as he kissed the duct tape over her mouth, swiveling his head passionately as she gasped. She could feel moisture dripping from his mouth and down her chin. There was a churning in her stomach, a lump forming in her throat, her body was shaking, aching to get this freak away from her. She was pinned to the beam with his body, her hands stuck between them, and without much thought to how much power she may even be able to back herself up with, Kagome bucked her hips forward, shoving her fisted, tied hands into his groin.
Naraku lurched away, grasping his pelvis with a slight bend, but not completely doubled over and groaning as she had hoped. She was only able to nudge, but thankfully the area was notoriously sensitive enough to effect him even this much. Utilizing the space between them, Kagome brought her knee up and shoved her foot into his torso, pushing him away with her kick. Naraku stumbled, a groan on his breath, and the moment her foot landed on the ground she reached for the knife, stomping the sole of her canvas shoe against the blade and dragging it along the dirty cement closer to the support beam so she could bend and grab it.
The man began laughing, the sound low like a chuckle and growing to a malevolent octave. "Uh, oh! Watch out! Kagome's got the knife! Oh no!" He gibed.
Kagome gripped the handle as tightly as she could, the rope on her wrists making the hold slightly awkward. She tried not to let that show though, breathing heavily as she held the blade out before her.
"That's fine. Keep it. I've got others." Naraku shrugged carelessly, sauntering toward her. "It's always fun watching women try to put up a fight, and I can tell you're as plucky as they come." Kagome tensed incredibly as he continued his path, backing up. Even though she was the one with the weapon, she knew how easy it would be for a demon to overpower her. He smiled, the cracks of his straight teeth stained with blood, the crimson liquid dribbling down his chin and to his neck. "You're gonna die here, Kagome. You can fight all you want, but you're still gonna die."
She whimpered, powerful shudders racking her body and she gripped the knife even tighter to make sure she wouldn't drop it, tears stinging her eyes as they quickly poured down her cheeks.
"In fact, the fun should be starting soon. Your puppy should be able to smell my blood from far off. I wonder if he smells it now. I wonder if he can differentiate whose blood is whose. Can he tell it's mine, or will he just smell the copper in the air and assume it's yours? Either way, I sense something's coming." Naraku sang, his face lighting up as he stopped just before the tip of Kagome's blade. She had to fight off the reaction to look around for whatever he spoke of, forcing herself to keep her burning eyes glued to the criminal.
"Come on, what are you waiting for? You could literally end it all right now." He dragged his feet forward two inches, pressing his sternum to the sharp point. Kagome winced for him, stepping back against the beam only to have him follow, intimidatingly standing with his arms spread out, his red-painted grin beaming sadistically. "You could leave here with Inuyasha the second he arrives. Inuyasha wouldn't have to endure any pain. All you've gotta do is stick me. Come on. Just push it in. You could end this, you have the power. Do it, Kagome. Come on! Come on! Do it! Stab me! You know you want to! If you don't, I'll kill Inuyasha and it'll be your fault because you had the fucking opportunity to stop me! How could you do that to him!? You won't even try to save his life! Stab me! Stab me, Kagome! Do it! Stab me!"
Kagome sobbed, choking slightly on the muffled sound, terrified of the manic man before her, his red eyes wide and bloodshot. Spittle was dribbling from the plush of his bottom lip. He was scowling like he was suddenly furious, but there was also a hint of humor flushing through, curving his mouth upward.
"See that's the thing." Naraku murmured menacingly. "You think the knife, itself, is going to protect you. No, baby girl. You need to have the volition to back it up."
He yanked at the rope that hung from her wrists, taking Kagome by surprise by pulling her hands down and to the side, the kitchen knife falling from her fingers and clattering against the floor.
Koga crouched low, each step mindful and as silent as possible as he rounded the corner away from Inuyasha who'd planned to enter through the front, the gravel grinding beneath his feet. He kept his gun aimed at the floor, rushing to the rusted door he could see toward the end of the long wall. As he approached, small, pained gasps met his ears, accompanied by a man's vehement shouting. The orders were twisted, growing louder and more devilish before completely dying off, a clank echoing throughout the warehouse. Koga kneeled just before the opening, leaning to side-glance through the opened door.
Kagome was held at an angle by the ties around her wrists, her eyes pinched nearly shut from the jarring look of fear crinkling her face, thick tape over her mouth, a dark red covering the silver that had dripped to the curve of her chin. A man slowly slid his fingers through her hair, curling and snagging the dark locks to pull her head back, curving his body to whisper in her ear. Koga couldn't hear it, but the drowned sob from Kagome told him everything he needed to know.
"Hey! Get your fucking hands off her! Let her go!" Inuyasha's voice bellowed through the warehouse, his gun pointed ahead of him. Naraku smiled, slowly turning his head to face him, his hand still wound in Kagome's raven hair. The whimper that left her throat at the sight of him was heartbreaking, her current state wringing his insides agonizingly. He desperately wanted to shush her, to tell her everything would be alright, but he could only spare her brief glances for the moment. Until Naraku was taken care of, he needed his undivided attention on him. He couldn't let his guard down.
"Well, it's about time you got here. I almost thought it would just be Kagome and I having all the fun."
"She's not a part of this." Inuyasha seethed.
"You know that's not true."
"Let her go. I'll stay. You've got me all to yourself."
"Her screams are much more rewarding than yours."
"No, Naraku! This isn't how it's gonna go down!"
"Oh, and you're gonna tell me how it is? I don't think you're the one with the power here. You may have a gun, but I've got the girl."
"Come on, Naraku, just give her to me. You set her free, I won't even fight back." Kagome made a gurgling sound of protest through the duct tape. "You can kill me! You can get your revenge! Just give her to me first!"
"You want her?" Naraku chuckled. Unfurling his fingers, he released the rope and her hair taking a large step to the side. "Go on, Kagome. Be free. Run to Inuyasha! Go on, girl!" He bated, taunting the both of them with her captivity.
Still, she struggled to wiggle her way free of her restraints, desperate to get away, to cross the large room and clutch onto Inuyasha for dear life. Naraku's laughter bounced off the walls boisterously, infuriating her, and if looks could kill she knew the scowl on her face would have burned him alive. A thunderous growl ripped the air, and she could practically hear Inuyasha's grip tighten dangerously over the trigger.
Naraku shrugged in an oh well manner, the blood on his jaw and neck a darker shade than before as it noticeably dried. Inuyasha could only hope Kagome had done that to him. As he held an unfaltering grip on his pistol, he realized he had a clear shot. He could take Naraku out where he stood, but his conscience riddled him. He didn't have the proper provocation to justify killing him, though he really, really fucking wanted to. He could wound him, but even that was a stretch. Lashing out, putting a bullet through him could cost his badge and a lot more trauma on Kagome's behalf. She didn't need to see that. Looking at her now, the stiffness of her muscles, the small quakes that inadvertently racked her body, the fading bruise on her cheek that was accentuated by her paled skin, the sweat that caused her bangs to wave and stick to her forehead, she'd been through enough. His one priority was to get her out as unscathed as possible. He'd handle whatever Naraku had to throw at him after he saw to her safety.
"We don't need to play these games, Naraku. You're upset about what happened all those years ago, so-"
"Nine years ago, to be exact! Happy anniversary, sweetie." Naraku winked.
Inuyasha paused, allowing his words to sink. He couldn't imagine what was so significant about the ninth year, but he could understand that Naraku had planned for everything to fall on this day. He gave a feeble nod of acknowledgment. "You're upset about what happened nine years ago."
"Upset would be a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?"
"An overstatement?" Inuyasha asked, muddled. "Well, how about you tell me what's going through your head. Let's start with that, okay?" He kept his tone as level as possible, his ember eyes glued to the seemingly amused man before him.
"Was that word too big for you, half breed? I'm not mad." Naraku claimed. "I don't care that I was found out, I don't care that I was arrested, I don't care that I was sentenced to life in an insane asylum, I - simply - don’t - care. You want to know why I've been targeting you and your girlfriend? It's because of the arrogance you portrayed during my interrogation. You had this air about you that spoke volumes of how you felt you could never be beat. You were so young. Fresh to the field, right? It was pretty evident that you were the rookie in your department, and I thought you were merely overcompensating so it wouldn't bleed into our one-on-one time. Then, a few hours in I realized that was just a flaw in your personality. You're cocky, Inuyasha. You carried yourself like you could never be destroyed. And I wanted to be the one to destroy you.
The one thing I could never get out of my mind, though, was the moment you lot finally got the warrant to search mom and pop's cabin. I saw it. In your eyes. There was a brief glimpse of fear, and god, I've been dying to see it again ever since! What were you so afraid of? Was it because deep down you knew Hakudoshi was dead?"
"Don't say his name!"
"Was it because you knew a little boy had been killed and you failed to stop it?"
"Naraku!"
"You didn't want to admit it to yourself, but the moment they gave you the green light to go that's when you knew you had to face the music! You were about to see little Hakudoshi rotting in the ground!"
"Shut the fuck up, you disgusting piece of shit!"
"Don't be so hard on yourself, Inuyasha. You failed before you even tried." Naraku shrugged again, apathetic to the trembling of the half demon's rage. "I've never left a victim's side before they were dead, and you caught me on the edge of the woods on my way out. Much like this place.”
Inuyasha felt a thick mass build in the center of his throat, seeing red, fighting his finger's muscles to squeeze the fucking trigger and end everything now. As the escaped criminal swiveled his head to face Kagome, Inuyasha damn near lost control, clenching the breath in his lungs as a dangerous rumble reverberated from his chest.
"I bet you're wondering how I could be so cruel, aren't you?"
"Don't fucking talk to her!"
Kagome flinched, worried, brown eyes flickering back and forth between Naraku and him.
"See, to me, it isn't about cruelty. I thought if I watched the life drain from a person's eyes, I'd eventually feel something. Over and over, I tried. And over and over, I failed to feel an ounce of pity. I will admit, though, there was a good amount of exhilaration." Naraku knelt down reaching for the knife by his feet and Inuyasha went hot, flexing his hands over the grip as his gun followed his every move.
"NARAKU, STOP!"
"Make me." He smiled, curling his fingers around the black handle.
A shot was fired, ringing loudly in the abandoned building and paining Inuyasha's ears, the sharp sound of a ricochet bullet almost drowning out the startled shriek from Kagome.
"Drop it!" Koga ordered, running in from the right-side door. "Right now, drop it!"
Naraku had covered himself in reaction to the gunshot, the knife in a white-knuckle grip over his head. He slowly unsheathed himself, his jaw tensed and eyes closed in agitation as he rose to a standing.
"I was wondering when you'd finally crawl out from your hiding spot." He drawled.
"Drop the fucking knife." Koga reiterated, blue eyes slanted in determination. Slowly, steadily, he was side-stepping his way to Kagome.
"Or what? The K9 unit will play good cop - bad cop with me?"
"Actually, we're more notorious for bad cop - bad cop." Koga cocked a brow, his gun firmly aimed at the bold man. "We don't really have the patience for mentally breaking scum when we’re perfectly capable of physically doing it."
Kagome looked away from the scene before her, brown eyes colliding with vivacious ember. They were so close, he was a small sprint away, yet she felt like they could have been separated by several locked rooms in between. She watched his eyes flick back toward Naraku, making sure his attention was still focused on the wolf demon, then switch back to her. He parted his lips, silently mouthing two words, but she didn't comprehend, furrowing her brows and shaking her head in question. Once more, he made sure he was clear, then tried again, mouthing "Back up," a little slower than before.
This time, it was her that made sure Naraku wasn't paying attention. She watched as his terrifying eyes challenged Inuyasha's partner, watched as he loosely wobbled the kitchen blade in between his fingers. Carefully, she took one step away. When his red irises didn't land on her, she took another. One more had her at her rope's length.
"Naraku, if you think I won't pull this trigger right now you're fucking wrong." Koga's deep voice boomed. Naraku swiveled his head back and forth in mockery, trying to irate the wolf, but he held firm. It wasn't something he wasn't used to from perps. "Drop the knife. Don't give me a reason. Your brother doesn’t want anything to happen to you. Byakuya didn’t want a deal on his sentence for talking, the only deal he wanted was assurance that you would live. He wants another chance for you to get healthy, but that also means you’ve gotta work with us.”
“No, it doesn’t.” Naraku continued to play with the blade. “None of that sounds like it’s any of my business.”
“He wants a better life for you.”
“Then he should have paid for a hotel instead of hiding me in a warehouse.”
“He’s fighting for you, Naraku.”
“I didn’t ask him to. I’m not interested in his pitiful plea bargain, and I’m definitely not interested in anyone’s mercy. Fuck you guys.” He laughed.
“That’s fine, that’s your prerogative, but here’s the thing: you’ve got two loaded guns aimed at your head. If you take a step in any direction with that weapon in your hand, we’re provoked to shoot. If you throw the knife, we’re provoked to shoot. If you even look like you’re about to do something stupid, we are provoked to shoot.”
There was consideration on Naraku’s face as he pondered, his red eyes bouncing over to Kagome, his grin wicked and stained. Another growl from Inuyasha ripped though the air, a clear warning to look away from her, but the demonic sound went ignored. There was a flinch in her expression as he stared, the hollow of her throat emphasized as she sucked in and held her breath.
“Looks like plans have changed, sweetie. That’s okay, though. I’ve already left my mark on you, haven’t I? You’re never gonna forget me.”
“Stop talking to her!” Inuyasha shouted viciously.
The kitchen knife fell from Naraku’s fingers, bouncing against the floor, and he took a single step toward her, both Koga and Inuyasha stiffening incredibly. Koga matched his step, only a few feet separating him from sheathing Kagome behind his back. Her glare didn’t shift away from the criminal, though. She held her venom toward the man unwaveringly, her chin raising indignantly at his statement.
“Just remember, Kagome,” He paused, licking his lips. “You could have saved him. Whatever happens to Inuyasha is entirely your fault.”
Her nose crinkled angrily, but she couldn’t hang onto it. There was no stopping her eyes from traveling over to the half demon in the background, his scowl deadly until he met her concerned gaze. Instantly, a remorseful look washed over him. Inuyasha shook his head, his silver ponytail hardly swaying with the subtle movement, and she could tell he just wanted to soothe her; his way of protecting her the best he could at a moment like this. This was her fault, though. She easily fell for Naraku’s ploy. She broke Inuyasha’s trust and basically trotted all over the dedicated security he’d provided. She snuck out in the middle of the night and got them all stuck in this dangerous scenario. If anything happened to Inuyasha, she was to blame.
Maybe nothing would happen, though. Maybe he was all talk. He was in a mental asylum, so he wasn’t all there in the head, right? From her angle, it seemed like he was cornered. Koga was doing a really good job at talking him down, he’d even dropped his knife. Maybe Naraku didn’t comprehend things as clearly. She couldn’t remember if Inuyasha told her what degree of instability he harbored, so it was hard to decipher what could have potentially been going through Naraku’s head as he spoke.
Her abductor launched and she hardly had time to react, his hand snagging and yanking the tail of her rope as he ran passed laughing. Kagome fell to the floor with a choking gasp, her rib cage slamming against the beam with his strength and direction, and before she could look up or gather herself, she felt a body hovering over hers. Koga had crouched low, his hands snaking around her waist to help her sit up, and as she opened her eyes, she saw a blurred Inuyasha sprint passed them. Koga shouted a boisterous demand for Inuyasha to stop, but by the heavy curse lingering on his breath, she knew it went neglected. Everything was happening so fast, and as she realized Inuyasha was chasing after Naraku alone, an obnoxious alarm started blaring in her head. She stammered to her feet, her dirty, white shirt slightly clinging to her side from the damp floor she’d collided with.
Koga shoved his gun into the holster on his hip and snatched the discarded kitchen knife from the floor as Kagome pulled back on her ties, and he worked to cut through the tail. As soon as the rope was cut free from the beam, she stumbled backward, catching herself and immediately charging after Inuyasha. Koga dropped the knife and hooked his arm around her lower abdomen, lifting her off the ground in her haste and carrying her over to the cover of the wall of nearby, stacked crates. She was grunting and shouting in protest, squirming in his hold, her words incomprehensible and muffled.
“What the - what the hell are you doing!?”
Kagome pushed him back, her fingernails flicking at the edge of the duct tape on her mouth, but they were too shaky to get an actual grip. Koga took over and grabbed the opposite end, yanking the thick, stained tape right off her face, a furiously red rectangle left in its wake.
“We have to go after Inuyasha! Naraku’s gonna try to kill him!”
“Hang on, stop moving!” Koga barked, fiddling with the knot of her wrist cinch. “I have to get you outside and I need to call for backup first!”
“Call for backup NOW!” Kagome demanded, deep brown eyes piercing him threateningly. Koga dropped her still-restrained wrists, using his body to shield hers as he heard Naraku shouting incoherently from the second story on the other side of the large building. Kagome started struggling with him again, trying to free herself from his cover so she could run after them, practically growling with her vehemency.
“Look, I’ll call for backup now but then I still have to get you outside! Stop fighting me! The sooner I get you safe, the sooner I can go help Inuyasha!”
That last statement struck her still, and the wolf demon didn’t waste time in ripping his walkie from clip on the back of his pants, squeezing the button on the side as he called his team to their location for immediate assistance. As soon as the call was made, he gripped the center of the cinch, pulling her to run out of the building with him. His car was all the way out on the street, and he didn’t feel comfortable running all the way off the premises to lock her in the back seat and racing all the way back. Anything could happen in that time, and the sooner he got back inside to help, the better. He made a sharp left to the very back of the building toward a large, broken shed sitting just before the fence separating the woodlands from the grounds. The shrubbery was overgrown and intruding on the territory, tucking the backside of the shed in growth and vines. Koga spun her in front of him from behind, forcefully bending her knees to sit in the dense protection. He kneeled in front of her doing a once over, something he hadn’t been able to do just yet.
“You okay?” He asked huskily, brows arched in concern. There was a bruising scarlet peeking from beneath her bangs just over her left eyebrow, and he gently pushed her hair out of the way to check the thick bump on her forehead to make sure it was nothing worse. Kagome nodded with a breathy “yeah,” and Koga asked if she was sure for reassurance purposes, making sure she wasn't bleeding anywhere. When she nodded again, he sighed out, gently grabbing her by the jaw to make sure he had her undivided attention. “Then for the love of god, Kagome, stay here!”
Koga ran off, his gun now gripped between both hands as his speedy steps along the gravel disappeared.
Kagome tucked herself further behind the shed, her heart pounding rapidly. Her thoughts kept shifting to the horrible and potential what if's of the situation as she desperately tried to listen to what was taking place inside the building, her ears filled with nothing but the rustle of the trees' branches just feet away. Opting to busy herself, Kagome wriggled her wrists in the confinements of their wraps, the flesh beneath raw and irritated from her consistent tugging, pulling, and twisting to break free for hours now. The knot looked tighter than ever, and Kagome huffed in aggravation, figuring she'd been the one to make matters worse with her struggling. Her wrists were stuck being bound for now, until someone could cut her free.
Sitting there in hiding was more torturous than being tied to the beam. As her breathing came together, she peeked from the corner, looking back for some semblance of awareness. There was a gelatinous sensation in the depths of her chest, dense, spreading, the clouds overhead providing an ominous darkness on the already-dingy warehouse while her brown eyes sought for any signs of the three men. The wait continued, increasing the boiling uneasiness Kagome stewed in, and she searched harder, poking her upper body out further. In her peripherals, the subtle gleam of silver caught her attention, a four-foot rod sticking out from the weeds along the edge of the shed. There was a moment of hesitation, her sights never leaving the metal in case it would suddenly vanish in thin air.
Crawling out on her knees from the sheathing Koga had placed her in, she picked up the rod, working on the adjustment of her awkward grip to hold it as solidly as possible, opting to curl her right fingers tight around the dirty metal and support that grasp with her left hand. With a deep, determined breath, Kagome rose to her feet and ran across the gravel space, heading for the door she and Koga had exited from.
Inuyasha had followed after the crazed man as swiftly as he could, but managed to lose sight of him in the makeshift maze of palettes, crates, and other large, abandoned, warehouse objects. Even on the second story it was hard to get around. This building wasn't left like this; he'd been here before during an undercover stunt. This was just evidence of the incredible amount of free time Naraku had had since August.
He held his gun at the ready, leading his way with it as he listened closely and curved around corners. The entire place was swarming in Naraku's putrid scent, making it impossible to pinpoint his location that way. The man was still, he had to be. Inuyasha couldn't pick up any clatter from shoes hitting the wood beneath their feet, whether walking or running. Nothing. No raspy breathing, no laughter, no noises whatsoever other than the distracting wind from outside and his own, careful footsteps along the path. As he nudged through a particularly narrow route, there was a close creak, but before he could prepare, he was smacked in the jaw with a damp slab of wood.
"So, that girlfriend of yours," Naraku began, standing taller than him as Inuyasha stumbled backward, clutching his chin. "Not the brightest crayon in the box."
"Don't fucking talk about her!" He growled.
"She leaves the safety of your nest for a girl you chose over her at one point - that was the closest I'd ever come to feeling sympathy for a person, because ouch. - gets herself kidnapped, and when she had the opportunity to do something to help the situation, she didn't. She froze. Even better, she cried."
Inuyasha said nothing, taking aim as Naraku sped at him. He swung the board and Inuyasha shot a split second later, the bullet missing as the gun was flung from his hand, slid along the wood, and slipped beneath the railing, falling to the first floor.
"Whoops." The criminal grinned.
The half demon swung his fist, his hook effectively dodged by Naraku's nimble feet. Naraku dropped the board and clutched the tee shirt at his chest, swinging him around, surprising Inuyasha with his strength as he was slammed against the wall.
"What's going on, big MMA fighter? I thought you could spar! Or are you just stalling so I'll give you every little detail of what I did to your precious Kagome?"
Inuyasha flung his forehead forward, colliding with Naraku's and forcing him to stumble backward. The man recovered quickly, shaking his head and running his hands through his hair to smooth out the short, messy locks.
"All you had to do was ask."
"Shut the fuck up!"
"We kissed. It was pretty magical." He shrugged, reaching behind and yanking a pocketknife clip from his belt. He flicked it open, twirling the small, sharp weapon skillfully in his fingers. "Oh, god, and that tape I put on her mouth was an absolute necessity. She wouldn't stop screaming for you! Inuyasha! Inuyasha! Save me, Inuyasha! Inuyashaaaaa!"
He knew that Naraku was just trying to get under his skin, but god fucking damn it, it was working. He clenched his fists tight, his claws pinching into his flesh, and ground his teeth together, trying not to give the nut case the reaction he was looking for.
"I'll admit, I'm a little upset I didn't get to go through with my original plan. I had this whole thing ready to go where you were going to watch me kill her. You wouldn't be so smug and arrogant then, would you, Inuyasha? That's okay, though. I did enough damage to her to last a lifetime, and her poor, little puppy won't be able to protect her from the scars and nightmares. That, I can assure you."
"What, you think you're gonna kill me?"
"It's everything I've been dreaming of." Naraku smiled, still twirling his pocketknife.
"Keep dreaming. It ain’t happening."
The manic man lunged at Inuyasha, swinging his knife back and forth in an attempt to slash him, and the half demon sped backward. His back collided with a wall of stacked palettes and he knew he had one chance to get this right. Naraku went to stab him, and Inuyasha tried to clasp his wrist to nudge it in the opposite direction, his palm landing higher than intended and clutching onto part of Naraku's fingers along with the blade. At this point, with the amount of adrenalin coursing through his system, he hardly felt the skin slice at the heel of his hand, only understanding he was bleeding through the sharp tinge of copper wafting through his nostrils.
Sliding down and incorporating his freehand, Inuyasha struck the inside of Naraku's wrist outward with furious pressure while simultaneously smacking the side of the blade inward, the pocketknife flying from the criminal's grip and clinking to the floor. Immediately following, Inuyasha threw the back of his fist into Naraku's face, clipping his nose. Naraku's head flew back with the force, his footing following, and Inuyasha seized the opportunity, angled himself, and struck him hard with a sidekick to the ribcage.
He staggered backward, clutching his abdomen with heavy breaths, dangerous red eyes blaring at the half demon. With a snarl, he lunged again, swinging his fists, and each blow was deflected by Inuyasha's swift reflexes, palms effectively shoving Naraku’s forearms aside while stepping for proper angling. As Naraku's relentless attacks were thwarted, Inuyasha punched him in the jaw, clutching onto Naraku's upper arm to keep him in place and hooking his forearm inward, smacking his elbow to his opponents cheekbone. He released Naraku's arm but kept a grip on his sleeve to allow motion, swinging his fist into Naraku's sternum to get him to double over, then slamming his elbow into his upper back. He fell to the floor, his laughter coming out wheezy and slow.
Inuyasha crouched, snagging the back of Naraku's shirt as the man began to pick himself up, lifting him to his feet and slamming him against the railing. He folded backward slightly, the top of the rail only reaching his mid back.
"What are you gonna do, Inuyasha?" Naraku asked breathlessly, blood trickling from his right nostril. The stained and crusted smile on his face was disgusting, taunting, and challenging. "You gonna kill me?"
"No." The half demon replied, a growl on his tongue. "As great as that sounds, I'd much rather watch you rot away in the asylum."
"Wrong answer." He laughed.
"Don't act cocky, Naraku. There's no fucking way you're getting away from me."
"Wrong again." Naraku rocked against the railing, bucking his hips harder each time until the rotting wood the rails were screwed into cracked and began to crumble. The guard fell back, taking huge chunks of the flooring with it, causing Inuyasha to instinctually stumble backwards, a hissed "shit" heavy on his breath. As he looked up from the wood beneath his feet, Naraku was gone. Rushing forward to the edge, Inuyasha expected to see his opponent's body laying on the ground level, broken and seeping away life, but all he saw was the crumbled wood and broken, rusted rail.
"Mother fucker!" Inuyasha shouted, flailing his arms at his side in exasperation. He gave an exaggerated huff, quickly wiping the leaking blood from his palm on his jeans and leaning down to retrieve the pistol in his boot before jumping from the second story to land on the top of a low wall of nearly-unstable crates, bringing him to wobble slightly to keep upright. From there, supporting his leap by bracing his hand on the edge of the box, Inuyasha's feet met with the cement flooring, pistol immediately at the ready.
There was an incoming shuffling of feet from a large pathway behind him, and he swung around, gun aimed at a fully prepared wolf demon.
"Fuck!" He growled. "Where's Kagome?" Inuyasha quickly asked, lowering his weapon.
"She's safe, don't worry about it. Where's Naraku?" Koga aimed his pistol to the floor, blue eyes studying the line of blood that had escaped the corner of Inuyasha's mouth.
"No fucking clue. He slipped away from me."
"I heard a gunshot-"
"I missed."
He gave a curt nod, looking around at the spacious areas between man-made walls of objects. Inuyasha trudged forward toward the far opening and Koga took up the rear, his head swerving left and right for full awareness. As they came through to an empty corner, they paused in the center, Inuyasha's aggravation notably spiking.
"Come on, Naraku!" He boomed, his voice bouncing off the walls. "No more games! You started this, now lets fucking end it! Right now!"
Silence.
A moment later, Inuyasha and Koga were moving again, Koga once more trailing behind. As they approached a very wide area that he would have guessed was dead center of the warehouse, a dangerous feeling puddled in the pit of Koga's stomach. They were being watched. He couldn't pinpoint which direction the sensation was flooding from, lingering in place as he glanced around the dingy area, the space sparsely illuminated thanks to the boards covering the windows above them and the dark clouds hanging overhead. He heard the scuffle of Inuyasha's boots proceeded further. The curse in his growl. And then he heard fast-paced running coming right at him.
Inuyasha spun around as a loud commotion ensued behind him, Koga grunting as Naraku worked to overpower him. The half demon's gun was poorly aimed, shifting back and forth for a good shot as Naraku pinned Koga face down, his knee in the wolf demon's back, crouching low and squeezing the grip of the gun right from Koga's struggling hand.
"As you wish, puppy dog." He chuckled, pressing the muzzle to Koga's temple. The snarl on his partner's face was ferocious, and as he bared his fangs, Naraku smacked him in the same spot with the butt of the Glock. "Let's end this. Go ahead and shoot. You've got one chance."
Inuyasha scowled, his hands giving a feeble tremble from the insurmountable pressure that thickened the air. His gun twitched left and right, up and down, following Naraku's movements but never spot on as he kept attached to Koga's body. Inuyasha wasn't close enough to have a clear position on him. They were at an angle at the other side of their large space, and when Inuyasha tried to take a subtle step forward to up his advantage, Naraku cocked a sneer and pulled on the tight knot of Koga's ponytail to lead him to stand on his knees, shielding himself behind the broad torso of the wolf demon, the gun only leaving the side of his head to reposition just behind the lobe of his ear.
"Let him go, Naraku!"
"The only way I'll do that is if I'm dead." He said. "Or he's dead. Whichever comes first."
"Take the shot, Inuyasha!" Koga ordered, blue eyes piercing him as sharp as any bullet.
"Yeah! Take the shot, Inuyasha!"
"You can shoot him, you can shoot me, but there's no way you're getting out of here alive!"
"Don't fucking talk! Just shoot him!"
"Why, because the backup your buddy called for five minutes ago is here?" He remarked sarcastically.
"Any minute now."
"Inuyasha!"
"I could kill Koga now, kill you a split second later, and then I can go grab Kagome who's conveniently been hidden behind the shed out back and slash her throat all before the SWAT team shows up. And you probably thought you were being so slick, huh Moon Moon?" Naraku clutched the front of Koga's jaw with the hand that once held his long, brown hair, bringing his partner to shake his head in resistance against his hold. "Man the power of sight is incredible! You know there are a few windows here, right?"
Inuyasha's brow twitched as he seethed anger, a demonic need to rip this fucker to shreds just for threatening Koga and Kagome shaking him to the core. His fingers curled tighter around the grip of his gun, focusing with all that he had to get a clear shot.
"Don't think about it, just shoot him! Shoot him!"
"Shoot me."
"Inuyasha!"
"Shoot me."
"I swear to fucking god, Naraku, let him go!"
"What's the matter, Inuyasha? Can't pull the trigger? Wont save your partner? You’re not even gonna try?"
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
"How many times has he saved you? Come on, Inuyasha! Be the hero you've worked so hard to become! Where's your pride!?"
"Inuyasha, it's okay." Koga's expression had calmed considerably, his voice lowering to just above a whisper. He was trying to level with him, trying to tell him it was alright to miss. Though his face lacked any signs of nervousness, his wavering tone failed him.
"Shut up, you stupid wolf."
"Inuyasha." He tried again, steadier.
His finger flexed against the trigger, still not confident in his aim. His heart pounded painfully hard, a dense weight sinking in his abdomen. If he misses, Koga dies. If he misses, Naraku pulls his own trigger. A thick mass in his throat made it difficult to swallow, and Inuyasha could feel himself losing grip on the situation. What the fuck was he supposed to do? He could try to stall until their backup actually showed. If he could succeed in that, if he could manipulate Naraku just as well as he's manipulated them all, there was a chance he wouldn't have to risk Koga's life at all. As he parted his lips to speak, to ask a question, Naraku beat him to the punch, his deep voice causing Inuyasha's to hitch in the back of his mouth.
“Out of time. If you wont take your shot, I will." Naraku re-aimed his pistol and pulled the trigger, the loud bang echoing throughout the building.
Inuyasha staggered backward, collapsing to the ground.
Kagome instantly felt something snap inside of her, running out from her concealed spot with rage and terror etched into the lines on her face, whacking Naraku in the shoulders and neck with her metal rod. Both he and Koga fell forward, and Kagome swung again as hard as she could, hitting Naraku in the center of his back. He wheezed, and without thinking, she threw aside the rod, jumping for the gun in his hand. She heard her name being shouted multiple times, but it was muffled by the grunts and curses both she and her opponent omitted. With a jerk in the opposite direction, she got the gun from his grasp, her tied hands useless in supporting her body as she tried to scramble away belly down, but Naraku was now on top of her, his large, rough hands fighting for her to release the weapon. Unintentionally, Kagome squeezed, the gunshot and kickback from the pistol startling a yelp from her, but working in halting Naraku's attack for the smallest moment.
He clutched her hair and shoulder and spun her over, pinning her with bruising force and straddling her hips, his hands wrestling to grab the Glock from her, struggling against her never-ceasing wriggle to keep her hands above her head and away from him. Purposefully this time, she squeezed the trigger again, using the moment he flinched to aim the gun at his mouth.
"Get off of me!" Kagome slowly commanded, her tone lethal. Her brown eyes were slanted deadly, but her trembling limbs betrayed her. The room was silent, or maybe her ears were working against her as well, a thumping sound riddling the sense. It wasn't until he gave his infamously taunting and overdone chuckle that she knew it was all in her head.
He crawled backward, and she tensed her core considerably to follow him, having to incorporate her elbow along the floor as she sat up tall. As soon as her legs were beneath her, Kagome rose to a stand, shakily ordering him to stay on his knees as her aim stayed glued to his mouth.
Naraku looked at the barrel, then to her, the curve finally leaving his thin lips to lay flat.
“How valiant of you, Kagome.”
“Don’t talk!” She demanded breathlessly, shaking her head, wild strands of dark hair falling in front of her shoulders and over her cheeks.
"Or else what? You'll shoot? You couldn't even hold the knife straight before, what makes you think you can kill me now?"
"Shut up!"
"You don't have the guts. You're nothing but a damsel in distress."
"Am I?" Kagome asked, taking a small step in and raising the Glock to the bridge of his bloody nose, the muzzle just inches from his sweaty skin.
Naraku closed his mouth, all traces of amusement completely vanished.
Inuyasha could see it, the glazing of her eyes, the paleness settling into the cheeks he’d just witnessed were red, the hollow of her throat as she struggled to take in actual breaths. Tears brimmed at her bottom lids but all other expression was disappearing from view. Her sights were set on Naraku, hardly blinking. She was moving past the point of rational thought. She was zoning.
Glancing to the side, Inuyasha noticed Koga watched the scene play as well, his lips parted and curved into a frown of concern. Holding that weapon, feeling the crushing weight of fear, her mind racing through horrible scenarios and which one was more likely to take place, rob her heart, break her spirit, he'd seen it before. Her fight or flight had completely taken over. It was telling her she wasn't safe, telling her she had no other choice. A wall was forming around her, one that would become thicker and thicker, almost impenetrable, the more seconds ticked by.
And Inuyasha could only hope he could get through that defense.
“Kagome.” He started gently, leaning on his good arm to sit himself up completely.
Koga slowly rose to his feet, moving with absolute control, blue eyes set on the girl just feet away. Any fast movements could startle her, could cause her to do something she didn't want to do. He made sure to stay as silent as possible, allowing Inuyasha to be the voice of reason she needed.
“Kagome, it’s okay now.”
Their gazes never broke, and Inuyasha could tell Naraku's red irises were holding her captive with their silent and menacing threats.
“I need you to put the gun down, baby.” He aimed his own pistol at Naraku in a way to take over, keeping his voice as soothing as his gruff tone allowed.
She shook her head as her face contorted, tears streaming down her cheeks while a feeble whimper escaped her lips. She wanted Inuyasha to keep talking, she wanted the constant reminder that Naraku hadn’t succeeded in killing him, thinking if he stopped coaxing her she’d turn and find he was actually dead on the floor and it was nothing more than her mind playing evil tricks on her. At the same time, she was too afraid to comply.
“Come on, put it down. You don’t need it.”
A minor twitch. Still no response.
"Hey, I need you to listen, Kagome. Everything's fine now, trust me. Put the gun down."
“I can’t.” She cried, her shoulders heaving with her deep gasps for air.
He tried not to let out his sigh of relief, clenching it in his throat. It was obviously too soon to celebrate, but he was reaching her. Thank god, he was reaching her.
“Yes, you can. Kagome. Look at me, baby.”
“No, I can’t!” She cried harder, voice breaking. “He’s gonna do something!”
“I promise you, he won’t. I’ve got a clear shot - if he moves, he’s dead. Now look at me.”
Kagome hesitated, scared he was wrong.
“Look at me.”
Finally, she shifted her gaze, her head unsteadily following her eyes as she fought against her instincts. As soon as she saw him, she nearly doubled over from the crushing sobs that left her lungs. His charcoal tee clung to his chest and shoulder, the large area soaked and deep in shade, blood beginning to drip down his left arm. He was sitting upright, his gun aimed at Naraku, ember eyes flickering back and forth from the criminal to her. He was alive. He was hurt, but he was alive.
Inuyasha smiled, finally letting out that alleviating huff. "That's my girl."
"You're okay?" She whimpered, still holding her aim.
"I'm fine." He said reassuringly. "Go ahead and put the gun down now, okay?"
"But-"
"Do you trust me?"
Kagome nodded, a faint mhm on her breath.
"Good. Then you know for a fact that I won't let anything happen."
Kagome tried to gather herself, forcing her lungs to take deeper, more level inhales. Turning her head, she gazed back down at Naraku, her hands trembling along the grip. The man on his knees had deadpanned, his eyes locked on her from just above the barrel. She gave a small nod in acknowledgment to her half demon's statement, exhaling from her mouth and loosening her fingers. From her right, a large hand smoothed over the back of her own, slowly, gently reaching for the gun, a voice whispering as she flinched, "It's just me, it's just me." Kagome allowed Inuyasha's partner to take the pistol with no resistance, his arm snaking around her back to tuck her into his chest as he took his own aim on Naraku. His thumb grazed her shoulder where he clutched her firmly, doing his best to soothe her anxiety down. The vest he wore was thick and scratchy, but not uncomfortable, his inhales bringing the material to rub against her curled-in forearms and cheek and causing a physical sensation that helped bring Kagome back to the present.
She relaxed in his arms, shifting to look over her shoulder at Inuyasha. He held his pistol steady, ember eyes alight as his heavy breaths brought his body to sag in what seemed like relief.
Shuffling feet reached their ears, a woman calling Koga's name, and he bellowed, "We're here!" in response. "We have an officer down! Call a medic!"
More commotion broke through as it sounded like multiple people were on the way to them, Sango leading the pack as she curved through the opening in the makeshift wall with her Glock aimed at the floor. She took in the scene, her brown eyes wide from shock, scouring the area with a shake of her head as she immediately ran to Inuyasha's side. Hojo, who was right behind her, pulled a pair of handcuffs from his backside, kneeling down to secure Naraku's wrists behind his back, Koga never lowering his pistol until he heard the tight clicks of both cuffs locking into place.
It was finally over.
Sango pressed both palms to Inuyasha's wound, glaring at him as he huffed and tried to push her off so he could stand.
"Stop! You know better!" She barked, applying additional pressure to the wound until he winced and sat back; the only way she knew to get him to comply.
Inuyasha rolled his head to the side, glancing over at the girl in Koga's arms. She watched him, worry creasing her brow and creating the pout on her lips. The wolf demon went to guide her away, out of the warehouse she'd been held captive in for too long, but she resisted, recoiling to leave Koga's hold to join Inuyasha on the cold floor. His partner didn't lose his grip, and Inuyasha's sensitive ears caught his low tone trying to persuade her away, using the word "temporary" multiple times.
Though she didn't fight Koga, knowing she needed to listen to him right now and let everyone do their jobs, her deep, brown eyes never left her half demon. As each step took her further away from him, she felt scared, twisting her body to keep sight of him. Inuyasha cocked a small smile at her, and she knew he was covering his discomfort.
Then he spoke, and though she'd just heard it not even a minute ago, a warmth rushed through her veins as his husky voice said, "It's okay, baby. Go."
Outside, the cinch was cut from her wrists, a hiss sliding over her tongue as her face contorted, blood quickly making its way through once again. The skin was red and irritated, more so at the base of the heels of her palms where all the pressure was focused each time she tried to squirm her way out, indents decorating the entire area. There were broken blood vessels dotting the surface, and even a spot where her skin had inadvertently broken. The medics cleaned it up and bandaged the small cut while she sat on the tail of the ambulance.
"I don't need to go to the fucking hospital." Inuyasha groaned, the EMT pressing gauze to the wound on his shoulder. "Just tape it up so I can leave."
"Actually, the bullet didn't pass through."
"What?"
"It wasn't a clean shot." The first responder stated, examining it beneath the absorbing material to see that the bleeding was slowing. "It's still in there. We need to get it out, which means you're going to the hospital."
"Just stick your finger in there and pull it out." The half demon arched a brow.
The medic paused, concerned, looking up in question at his captain.
"Yes, he is always like this. I'm sorry." Totosai frowned. "You're going, Inuyasha. That's final."
He huffed, the sound rough and exaggerated as he caved, too tired to battle the order, and leaned back against the wall. His shirt had been cut off of him to make his bullet wound accessible without straining his shoulder by lifting it over his head, the remnants of the tee on the floor beside him. They'd cleaned the surrounding skin of the mess of blood, thankfully, imagining the gory sight holding the potential to traumatize Kagome even further.
"Fine. I'm not going out on a gurney, though." He tried not to flinch as the EMT taped fresh gauze to the hole in his deltoid, extending over his clavicle and part of his pectoral. "And, I want to see Kagome first." His voice had unintentionally dropped an octave, losing its harsh edge.
It was more of a necessity than a desire. He needed a moment with her, and everyone's nod told him they understood that just as well as anyone. Sango held her hand out for him to take, helping him to his feet with her stained palms. They were dried, but just in case, he wiped them on his jeans and headed out.
He hadn't expected the way his feet carried him faster and faster toward the door, almost at a run, ignoring the pinch in his shoulder that would most likely be completely healed in two days. The pain was nothing compared to the boiling uneasiness in his core due to the separation from her. His adrenaline was still high, ember eyes drifting over the surrounding area and hubbub of officers and detectives, two emergency busses parked off toward the fence he and Koga had entered through. He headed in their direction, jogging now, his heart leaping in his chest as he spotted her sitting next to Koga on the tail. There was a blanket wrapped around her and her eyes were at half mass, staring at the rocks on the ground, her legs bobbing uncontrollably from the angle she'd propped them in.
Glancing up, those hopeful eyes landed on him, widening as she immediately jolted from her seat, throwing the blanket from her shoulders and running over to him. It was easy not to pay any mind to the throb in his arm as he skidded to a stop, grasping the breathless woman and silencing her sobbing apologies by crushing his lips to hers.
"You're so stupid!" He kissed her again. "God, you're so stupid! Why would you do that? Why would you leave?"
"I'm sorry!" She cried, fingers twitching against his bare sides.
"Are you okay?" He pressed their foreheads solidly together, a hand threaded through her thick waves at the back of her head. The heat of her skin washed over him, and he found he, himself, was trembling almost as badly as she. "I was so fucking scared, Kagome, tell me he didn't do anything to you!"
"I'm sorry! I love you! I'm okay! Nothing happened!" She said quickly, panting.
"Fuck." Inuyasha kissed her again and again, parting just enough to look to her for further reassurance.
"I swear. He hardly touched me."
The half demon parted her bangs, inspecting the welt on the side of her head, his fingers traveling over the green and yellow mark on her cheek, and landing at the crook of her jaw, planting one last, sweet kiss on her lips before clutching her into his chest, breathing her in before he inevitably had to let go.
He could already see his own, personal medic waiting for him at the side of his ambulance. He was being patient, but Inuyasha knew the sooner he got this over with, the sooner he could get Kagome home to his place and tend to her. He hugged her a little tighter for a moment, kissing the top of her head before curving to whisper in her ear.
"I have to go to the hospital, okay? Should be quick, they've just gotta take care of this injury." He looked up to scout out his partner, unsurprised to see the wolf demon standing not too far off, watching them, waiting for his cue with his arms crossed. Inuyasha gestured for him to come over, loosening his grip on Kagome and wiping the one stray tear just below her eye that hadn't dried. "Go with Koga."
Ember irises met the gleam of his partner's baby blues - he'd always teased that his eyes were a little too girlish for his build - and they clasped hands, bringing the other in for a firm shoulder bump, a silent thank you for all he'd done for Kagome thus far.
"We'll be right behind you." The wolf mentioned, taking up Kagome's side. Inuyasha nodded, glancing back at her, running his thumb over the brown stain on her chin.
"See you soon."
"Yeah. Soon."
Just as Inuyasha went to step away, a police vehicle approached to leave the gates. As it slowly rolled past, the gravel cracking beneath its tires, Naraku peered through the backseat, arms still restrained behind him. His lips pulled tight into a menacing grin, bringing an icy chill to crawl down Kagome's spine. She and Inuyasha followed the black and white car with their eyes, watching it meet the pavement, driving off toward town and disappearing from sight.
Three months later
"In the matter of The People V. Byakuya Saisei, how do you find?"
"We find the defendant, Byakuya Saisei, guilty your honor."
There was a collective sigh throughout the courtroom. Kagome's mother, who had been squeezing the life out of her hand, deflating when she heard one of the assaulters would be spending up to twenty-five years in prison. Kagome glanced to her left towards the defendant's table where he sat, Byakuya receiving sympathetic pats on his back from his attorney. Behind him were his parents, his mother in shambles while his father sagged in utter disappointment. Their son didn't bother to look back at them in apology. According to his confessions, he resented them and even almost blamed them for his decision to aid his brother in everything.
The room ceased its stirring as the judge slammed her gavel down three times, the old woman's voice demanding everyone's attention as she gave her closing statements. Byakuya was sentenced without the chance of parole, and Naraku, whom Kagome had only had to encounter once since trials began and was not currently present, was reassigned and transferred to a high-risk penitentiary to live out the rest of his days under deliberate and watchful security and isolation when necessary. With a thankful dismissal of the jury, the judge slammed her gavel once more, stating court was adjourned.
"Are we done yet?" Inuyasha groaned, trudging along at Kagome's side, her feet working a little faster than his to keep pace with his longer strides on the sidewalk. She lifted the small, frilly-wrapped package in her hands, white spiral ribbons splaying over her fingers.
"Does it look like we're done?" She cocked her head to the side, arching a brow. "Come on, this is the last one!"
"I still don't think Koga should have received anything." He huffed.
"He helped just as much as anyone."
"Eh." Inuyasha grimaced, shrugging wanly. "He was moral support."
Kagome rolled her eyes, giggling lightly as she reached for the handle of one of the glass doors, only pulling it open an inch or two before Inuyasha reached over her head and took over, holding it for her as she passed through. She paid him a silent regard, smiling gratefully as she entered into the flower shop.
Her heart began to pound. She knew this whole thing would be good for her in the end. Her therapist had mentioned that she should get closure for everything that had happened, and one of the ways they discussed was giving thanks to the people who'd helped her get through it all. Still, the last time she was here, she'd been running for her life, and the mind had an awful way of making her trip down memory lane feel more dire than it currently was. Inuyasha's shoulder brushed hers, and she glanced up at him. His silver bangs hung off his forehead with the tilt he held it at, a shimmer of sun shining through the far off window catching a small section of the fringe, illuminating the soft tones of his natural color.
"Good morning - oh!" The raspy voice of an elderly woman spoke, catching both of their attention. Kagome noticed the thin woman behind the counter, her grey hair tied behind her neck in a very loose bun, eyes wide and lined with age. Kagome walked further in to greet the woman, stopping before the mid-sized table separating them. "You're that girl from the news! Jinenji's mentioned you, too. Says he knows you."
Their case had been all over the news stations, most of which following the tedious and meticulous trial from the arrest up until the verdict was made last week. Though their faces weren't in the papers as much as Naraku's and Byakuya's, they'd incidentally been given the spotlight on television - her a little more than Inuyasha considering the amount of her involvement - far more than they'd ever liked. Not many people reacted to seeing her anymore, especially since the marks had long faded and Inuyasha proved to be a lethal bodyguard toward lingering cameramen, but mostly because the popularity these sorts of trials build only last so long. There was the climax of the testimonials that brought a lot of attention, but even before last week, all of their focus was centered on the sentencing of the criminals. Nevertheless, being recognized still caused Kagome to stiffen uncomfortably, though she'd admit she much preferred "that girl" to everyone knowing her name again.
In reply, she swallowed her embarrassment, smiling politely with a slight nod. "Uh, yeah."
"And you," The old lady redirected her gaze to Inuyasha, angling her chin according to their height difference. "You're that half demon."
She was rather blunt as she spoke, showing what could be mistaken for bitterness. Kagome couldn't bite back the way her face twisted into a slight scowl, upset for the way he'd been greeted.
"Relax, I don't mean that as a slander. You've done us all a favor and shown other half breeds that you don't have to be full-blooded anything to be something." She said, the lines on her cheeks pulling upward with her smile. "My boy, the owner of this shop here, is a half demon himself."
Kagome softened at the information, happy for the praise Inuyasha deserved, glancing up as he nodded stiffly in acknowledgment, running his hands through the short, freshly-cut hair at the back of his head, his cheeks brushed lightly with pink. He brought his hand to rest at the small of Kagome's back, the straight, silver strands smoothly flowing back to their rightful place along his crown.
"Is Jinenji here?" She asked. His mother pointed to the doorway in the far left corner, sitting back in her chair with a pleasant expression.
Kagome lead the way, the scents of the radiantly-red roses they passed almost demanding her to stop and smell them. Jinenji had his back turned toward them, his large body curved and hunched as he tended to his work. She gave a light rasp to the frame she stood in, watching as the gentle giant turned to peek over his shoulder. He jumped, those large blue eyes alight with shock as he spun around, almost bumping his head on the ceiling.
"Hi." Kagome smiled happily.
"It's you." The big half demon grinned. "You're - you're okay?"
"Yeah, I'm okay." She admitted, almost shying away. He'd seen her fresh from Byakuya's attack. The image of her locked in his memory must have been her battered and tearful face. She could understand that not even news reports could take the place of real life witnessing. Kagome held out the small gift in her hand. "This is for you."
"For me? What for?" Jinenji asked bashfully, taking the package in his fingers and making it look even tinier than it actually was.
"You helped me when you didn't have to. It's not much, but it's my way of saying thank you."
"I - I was happy to do whatever I could."
"And I appreciate it. More than you'll ever know. They're brownies, I made them myself." Kagome stood taller, her hands clasped in front of her. Jinenji thanked her, his voice soft, accepting her gift as he pulled at one of the white ribbons to untie the knot.
Kagome turned, reaching for Inuyasha to bring him beside her as opposed to standing behind. He took her hand, his fingers entwining through her own, a tender manner about himself as he looked at the man before them.
"This is my boyfriend, Inuyasha. Inuyasha, this is Jinenji. He's the one that saved me that night."
Inuyasha held his free hand out to shake Jinenji's, the sizes of their palms incomparable, but the message spoke just as powerfully. "Thank you. For all that you did."
"I didn't do much."
"But it meant everything."

#4 and 11 for olr please 😊
Oh My God. Number 4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
HNNNNG...Ok.
Chapter 4
"You and your causes," he tsked. "They still make the best damn truck I've ever been in. Doesn't mean I gotta like the man."
"As I recall you don't like a lot of people."
His eyes filled with sorrow and he stuck his hands into his pockets, shrugging.
"Probably 'cause a lotta people don't like me."
"I did," she whispered softly, and he looked away from her.
"You always were the exception to the rule, Kagome. All of 'em."
...
"Why dontcha give it a go?" he prompted, and the engine rumbled to life again. He quickly closed the hood, backing away from the front and walking over to the side. "Sounds like ya should be fine. You got real lucky this time. Don't you start doubting Fords," he smiled weakly, and she returned it.
"I won't."
"Listen," he breathed slowly, nervously. "I...I just want you to take care of yourself. Ok?"
"This sounds a lot like goodbye again, Inuyasha," she mused, and he lowered his gaze.
"Ain't it?"
Was it? Did she want it to be?
"I guess it is…" she whispered, glancing away from him. "Goodbye, Inuyasha. You take care of yourself too. I hope you're happy. Truly. With Kikyo or any of the others. You deserve to be."
She turned her head away from him and pulled her car out of park, shifting the gear into drive. She was about to step on the gas when she felt two clawed hands gently grab her face, pulling it out of the window.
She gasped and her eyes widened in surprise before closing when she felt his lips tenderly press against hers in a soft, lingering kiss before he pulled away. The feel of his lips against hers...it was just as she remembered it. Only she didn't remember this painful aching in her chest when they had kissed in the past...Or this horrible need to grab ahold of his neck to bury her face into his chest and just cry.
"Just wanted to do that one last time," he whispered just loud enough for her to hear, almost as if he were ashamed of himself. Of still wanting her. Of wanting what they once had. What they could have been.
Chapter 17
"You're fine."
"That's not the point," she snapped through gritted teeth, smacking his pectoral.
"Why don't you give me what for on Bessie then?" he grinned cheekily, and she just rolled her eyes, still simmering.
"You think I won't? I'll give you more than what's for. I'll give you a whole fucking dissertation on how big an ass you are."
"Complete with a cover page?"
She went to smack him again, but he just caught her hand and placed a finger over her lips. She tried looking at it, going cross-eyed in the process.
God, she was adorable. And sexy as hell when she was angry.
"Don't wanna wake up the whole town, remember?" he teased, and she glared at him as he removed his index finger.
"I'm not that loud."
He bit his tongue, trying - with great restraint by the way - to not comment.
He failed. Only a little.
"Sure ya ain't," he smirked, offering her a hand as she mounted Bessie.
"I'm not!"
"Ok then."
"Inuyasha!"
He just shook his head and climbed on after her, pulling her flush with his body as he encouraged the mare to start trotting in the direction of the cliffs.
"So...How loud are ya then? I've always wondered."
He could feel her confusion before understanding settled in over her and she began yelling indignantly at him. He didn't really care though. He loved teasing her. Loved seeing her get all huffy and flustered. Ruffling her feathers...He'd missed it.
...
"Kags," he whispered, staring into her eyes. They were filled with so much emotion. Desire. Want. Desperation.
"Yash," she murmured, biting the inside of her lip ever so slightly.
This time neither of them rebuked the name. He didn't want to, and it shook him...and neither did she.
He watched her eyes search his face, looking for something...and he couldn't help but wonder if she would find what it was. He supposed she must have, because her hand gently pulled his head down to hers, and she kissed his forehead. The place between his eyebrows. The tip of his nose.
She pulled away from him, biting her lip in thought.
"I feel like I'm playing a dangerous game," she mused, her words no louder than a whisper. "And I know I should stop, but I can't."
He wanted to ask her what she meant, but the gentle press of her lips against his cleared all of his thoughts from his brain in a matter of milliseconds. It was lighter than the flap of a butterfly’s wing - so faint a part of him wondered if he had imagined it…
But if he had, how come he could still feel her lips? How come the sensation of her kiss still lingered?
"Kagome?" he murmured, his eyes dancing across her face, trying to figure out what was going on with her? What was happening inside that head of hers?
"Just wanted to do that one last time," she whispered just loud enough for him to hear, echoing his same words from that fateful day.
"One last time?" he breathed, his heart lodging itself in his throat. "We seem to have a lot of those, don't we?"
"It's because we keep saying goodbye…"
...When really they should be saying hello.
Chapter 24
Oh god…
She was telling Inuyasha to do this, wasn’t she? She was giving him all these signals that she wanted him and now he had gone and wrecked everything and—
“Ladies...maybe you should take a step back from this...”
“No. There’s no need for that, Hojo. I’m leaving. She got what she wanted...and I...I won’t begrudge you of doing whatever the hell this was, but I want to make something clear. I’m going back to California, so whatever the hell Inuyasha did...It wasn’t for me, and he knows that.”
She picked up the bag of alcohol on the counter, holding her head as high as she could, and walked towards the exit.
“I hate you, Kagome Higurashi. I wish you never came back!”
She paused, her hand on the door, and turned to look at Kikyo.
“And I pity you, Kikyo...Waiting years to make a move on a man? You should have just taken what you wanted long before now.”
Chapter 25
“Did you ever think about it? Over the last seven years?”
Her heart broke at his strained tone. Like he was afraid of her answer, but needed to know all the same.
“Think about what…”
“Come on Kags,” he sighed in frustration. “You really need me to spell it out?”
“I…”
“Us,” he replied crisply. “What it could have been like if...Things had been different. If we hadn’t been scared, stupid kids who were more understanding.”
She swallowed back her anger at the implication that he could really believe that she could wrap them up so neatly and bury their past away in the back of her heart.
“Yes. I thought of us. Every time Garth Brooks comes on the radio or I look at a can of Budweiser...I can’t eat a pancake anymore without thinking of the times you would sleepover at our house. I can’t look at a man with amber eyes without seeing yours for just a split second. Every new moon, I wonder how you’re holding up. I never stopped paying attention to the cycle because it made me feel a little closer to you, and I can’t…”
She paused, taking a deep shuddering breath before turning to face him, making sure she held his gaze as she poured her heart out and reopened old wounds.
“And I can’t think of home without thinking of you. What happened between us haunted me and I wondered what it would be like if we had been different. I wish things had been different. You were my world. The only man I ever truly had feelings for, and sometimes...Yeah. Sometimes I wonder where we would be now if...If things had been different, and we hadn’t…”
She sighed, shaking her head.
“It doesn’t matter now though.”
“Don’t it?”
His whispered words were so quiet, if she hadn’t been looking at him, she might have thought that she hadn’t heard it.
“If you could...Could have a second chance at it all...Would you take it?”
Her throat was closing up. It was hard to swallow. She wished she knew what he was thinking, but she could see how scared he was. He was terrified of her answer, because she knew that he was asking himself the same damn thing. Had probably been asking it for a while, and she knew he had his answer.
But hers…
Hers scared the shit out of him, because he knew what he wanted her to say, but the possibility that she wouldn’t...What then? What would happen to them then? Once she said it, there was no way to unring that bell.
So she had to be sure.
But the thing was…
She didn’t even have to think about it. She knew the second he asked what she wanted to say. So, she mustered up what confidence she had, and looked him right in his scared, desperate, pleading eyes so there would be no mistaking her when she replied.
“Wouldn’t you?”
As for 11: What do you like best about this fic....
I like that it has so much of ME in it. I never knew how passionate I would become about this one when I started writing it, but I’ve never felt this way about a story before. It’s just so healing for me on so many levels...and it’s allowed me to pour so many feelings I’ve felt about different things over the years into a story. There’s no jilted lover in my past...No Inuyasha...But there is a lot of pain and loss and I think this has been a way for me to release some of that from within my soul. @clearwillow had NO idea what she was doing when she drew that picture, but I’m forever grateful to her for it. I never thought I’d be this into writing a western rancher fic since I know NOTHING about that, AND YET.....
Thanks for the ask @liz8080!!

*adds this WIP to an already burning pile of other WIPs*
I’ve always wanted to try my hand at the amnesia trope and when the right inspiration came along I just had to run with it!
The story is posted on AO3 and Fanfic.net, but you can also read it under the cut!
Summary: After being separated from InuYasha for a year, Kagome wakes up to find herself back in the Feudal Era. Without her memory, she introduces a new side of herself to InuYasha, who claims that they were separated for three years and reunited for seven months.
Chapter 1: A Second Reunion
Kagome found her gaze fixated on her high school uniform which sat neatly in the back of a blue locker. Soft shadows hugged the navy and beige fabric as a soft sound—almost like white noise or static—seemed to embrace her thoughts. Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes, Kagome reached out and grabbed her clothes. Exhaling slowly, she turned away from the locker so that when she opened her eyes nothing would have changed.
It was hard to believe that a year had passed since the Bone Eater's Well stopped working. Like a catalyst, the broken connection between her time and InuYasha's changed so much about Kagome without having to change itself. Her attendance rate soared, her old lifestyle came slamming into her weekdays, her acquired fear of the darkness felt like a slow burn even though it wasn't, and now she had invented ways to carry the consequences. Even though her friends in the Feudal Era were alive and well, they weren't here. Kagome supposed she was grieving but she felt as if she should be... happier. Miroku's wind tunnel must have vanished so he and Sango were probably married with a child on the way.
He appeared almost angelic then, but afterwards, he and Shippo could easily tie for the title of "Most Mischievous." Kagome hoped that InuYasha wasn't driving anyone insane with that demonic energy.
"Higurashi!" Yua Watanabe, the archery club's captain, called out with a slight wave.
Kagome dropped her hands from the ties of her hakama, offering her senior a soft, "Hi, Watanabe."
As her senior approached, Kagome attempted swallowing the idea of InuYasha with a quiet gulp. "Thanks for all of your hard work this year. I'm really glad you joined the club!" Yua exclaimed with a carefree ease that Kagome envied.
"Thank you, being able to do archery is important to me," Kagome replied, warmth spreading across her cheeks at the praise. Yua nodded a few times in agreement, not at all able to comprehend the meaning behind Kagome's remark. She continued talking, also unaware of how Kagome's thoughts returned to a time that she hadn't asked to leave behind. "Oh, and we're really looking forward to having you start training to compete next year. I know you'll do well!"
Kagome flashed Yua another modest smile but before she could even thank her for a second time, she yawned. "Excuse me," Kagome apologized, but another large yawn stretched at her consciousness. "I'm just going to go to bed now..."
The world returned to Kagome slowly. She blinked her eyes against an overwhelming amount of deep browns and warm oranges. The ceiling above almost looked like the wood roofing of a hut and the unmistakable popping fire and chirping crickets sounded like a lullaby. It's almost like I'm back in the Feudal Era, she thought to herself as she yawned. Just as she was about to turn and settle back into sleep, she heard him.
"You're awake."
InuYasha's voice sent Kagome lurching forward, all thoughts of sleep vanishing instantly. "InuYasha!" she exclaimed, her heart rate sprinting just as quickly as the dizziness in her head. The high schooler clutched at her chest with uncertainty, brown eyes daring to take in the telltale silver hair and amber eyes of the man she spent so many days longing to see just like this.
"Hey," InuYasha began, resting his hands on her shoulders. When—how did I come back? Kagome asked herself as she reached up to grasp one of the half-demon's hands. She never realized that his calloused skin could feel like a balm, working without delay to relieve the past year of her life. InuYasha was seated properly before her, his face highlighted by firelight and grounded by a somber expression."You shouldn't be pushing yourself right now. Kaede said you should rest."
Kagome's brown eyes had to be shining as he—InuYasha!— gently lowered her back down to the floor. She could feel moisture building at the corner of her eyes, too. Of course, there were so many questions she needed to ask, but watching as InuYasha gingerly pulled a thin blanket up past her shoulders, Kagome was just happy he was here. He felt so real; his touch, the timbre of his voice—everything about this InuYasha felt so real. If Kagome was dreaming, she didn't want to wake up. "I can't believe you came for me," she croaked out because she always knew that he would.
"Of course I did, stupid," InuYasha chided, crossing his arms. A small giggle filtered past Kagome's lips as he turned up his nose. When the schoolgirl fantasized about her reunion with InuYasha, he never acted this casual. They had spent a little more than a year apart from each other for the first time since they met and it was entirely too long. Had she not been so wrapped up in her own emotions, she may have chastised him back. "Would have been easier for me to do that if you waited for me like I told you to instead of charging out of the brush like that. You could've gotten seriously hurt, Kagome."
Kagome furrowed her brow slightly at InuYasha's comment. "What?" She asked, wiping away a tear with her index finger.
InuYasha thrust his nose even further in the air. "Keh, don't play innocent; damn ogre's club wasn't that hard, you didn't need to rush out."
Kagome frowned as his words sunk in. "I..." She brought a hand to her temple, rubbing it lightly as she tried to process what the half-demon told her.
All traces of agitation scurried from InuYasha's features at her motion. "Kagome, is your head bothering you? Kaede gave me some medicine to help with that, let me get it for you."
Before he could walk away, Kagome's hand grabbed at his pants, instantly stilling him. "Kagome...?"
"Where is Kaede?"
"'Dunno," InuYasha shrugged. "She probably went home or somethin'," he finished, lightly shaking her hand away and placing the kettle over the fire.
So InuYasha has his own hut and he wanted me to stay, Kagome thought to herself. A molten smile spread across her cheeks that matched the blush she was sure also appeared there.
Kagome rolled to her side to watch InuYasha as he babysat his kettle. Everything from the painted scowl to the delicate way he mixed tea was deliberate and when he was beside her once more, she pulled herself into a sitting position. As he passed her the cup, his hands lingered against hers. It was glaringly clear that InuYasha wanted to pick up where they had left off a few weeks before they defeated Naraku. Still, Kagome couldn't help but laugh slightly, not used to an InuYasha who was anything but abrasive. "You've sure grown up some," she said, tilting her head to the side.
"Uh..." InuYasha replied, breaking their contact to shove his hands into the voluminous red sleeves of the fire rat. "You uh, really hit your head there, didn't ya?" Kagome frowned again—hit her head? Didn't listen to him? She was missing something but before she could even ask, InuYasha grasped her free hand and gave it a tight squeeze. "Listen, when I told you to stay hidden, it was only because I knew I could handle that dumbass ogre on my own. I should have been paying more attention to you, though. You're still learning and I—I should have protected you. I'm sorry."
Kagome shook her head as InuYasha bowed his own. He wanted forgiveness when absolutely nothing he admitted happened to them. Kagome wriggled her hand from InuYasha's and winced, rubbing her forehead again. "Are you real?" She nearly whispered, tears forming once more. Kagome was used to the dreams—it would be so easy for him to deny it or stumble over his words or maybe just admit that all of this was just another fantasy her mind played out. But when she saw how the anxiety accumulated across every aspect of her half-demon's body, Kagome had a feeling she really was awake. "It's just that I—" she cut herself off. She needed to stand and maybe get fresh air or something. The world spun beneath her feet, but InuYasha was there, catching her and he was really there—they were really together. "Oh InuYasha," she stated, tears finally finding their freedom.
InuYasha froze the moment she buried her head against his chest, but it didn't take him very long to wrap his arms around her. "I'm supposed to be the one who's upset," he reminded her, hands softly stroking her hair. "You're really starting to worry me, Kagome," he admitted then and Kagome shook her head, lifting her dewy eyes up at him with a relief she thought would never be materialized.
InuYasha was different than she remembered and yet exactly the same. Just being around him set her at ease and she could feel some of her nightmares fade away. Kagome was safe now, but even as she sniffled a bit, InuYasha continued running his hand up and down her back, he radiated a peace she hadn't expected after being apart for so long. "How can you be so calm?" She asked him.
InuYasha's brow twitched slightly and he raised a fist, it was almost as if Kagome unintentionally spiked his ire. All she could do was tilt her head to the side. "Because Kaede said that being upset wouldn't help you relax. She didn't tell me it would make you worry more," he ground out. If InuYasha could trade a gentle reaction for an angry one within seconds, Kagome knew absolutely that she was in the Feudal Era again.
"It's been such a hard year without you, InuYasha, why on Earth wouldn't I want you to feel something? Did you even miss me?"
"The hell are you talking about, Kagome?"
Kagome frowned. Well, it was good to know that InuYasha could still unintentionally spark her ire, too. "My life has been absolutely miserable without you!" She blurted out, pressing an accusatory finger against his chest. "Do you have any idea how difficult things have been for me? And now you're just standing here like... like you haven't even thought about me on—" Kagome groaned, her head protesting at the plethora of emotions running through her mind.
InuYasha reached out, cupping her cheeks in his hands. "Kagome, take it easy," he advised, and she could hear the note of concern in his voice despite how stern it was. She glared up at him. He offered her a crooked smile that quickly faded. "Wait, did you say it's been a year since the well stopped working?"
"I mean, I think so," she said, suddenly feeling sheepish. Maybe her memories were a little off.
InuYasha placed a finger under her chin, tilting her up to look into her eyes. She found that his were suddenly swirling with conflicting emotions. "You were gone for three years."
Kagome gasped, taking a step back. "Three..."
"What's the last thing you remember?" InuYasha asked, picking Kagome up then laying her back down onto the ground.
Although he was trying his best to remain calm, she could tell he was upset.
Kagome swallowed the lump in her throat, reaching out her hand to lay against his thigh. "I just finished my first year of high school," she confessed.
"What happened to me?" InuYasha placed his hand over hers.
"We were fighting an ogre on the outskirts of the village 'n it threw you against the ground."
