Chapter 25: Birth & Rebirth

Chapter summary: Everyone continues repairing and cleaning the hospital when Omega and Citali have to leave to tend to a patient in labor.

Citali and Omega continued their conversation from the day before in her office the following morning after breakfast. Though Citali had been teaching Omega for a while, there were different expectations and responsibilities now that Omega was her apprentice. Citali explained that she would continue shadowing appointments with her and start attending more births with her, though not all of them. Omega was still a growing child after all and having her present for all the births Citali attended (especially the ones that took days) just wasn't realistic or healthy. Omega also still had a lot to learn: the anatomy and physiology of the dozens of different populations that lived on the planet, pharmacology, herbal medicine, the history of midwifery and healthcare, pregnancy and labor complications, just to name a few. Citali wanted her to focus on book learning just as much as hands-on skills. Citali also explained that though AZI was a wonderful friend and resource, it was vital that Omega become proficient at taking vitals and assessing patients without him. That way if there ever came a time AZI wasn't around for whatever reason, she'd know how to do it without him. When they finished discussing everything, Citali gave Omega her first weekly stipend. Omega was extremely confused at first why Citali was giving her credits when she was "just an apprentice". Nala Se never paid her.

"You aren't 'just an apprentice' Omega, you and I are a team. You're going to be doing some hard work with me and you deserve to be compensated for it," Citali said smiling at her. Omega was shocked when she counted them. There were almost 100 credits. "I know it's not much, I've had a lot of patients recently that have had to barter goods for my services. But whenever I am paid in credits, I will be giving you a share of them."

Omega tried to hand them back to Citali. "Citali, this is a lot of money! You shouldn't be paying me. You let me and my brothers live in your home and you feed us. I don't need this."

Citali couldn't help laughing. She'd had wanted to pay Hunter, Wrecker, Tech, Melita, even Echo for all they were doing helping her. All of them looked at her like she'd grown a second head when she tried to hand them credits that morning and said the same thing Omega was saying now. Citali didn't fight them too hard on it, but she wasn't going to let Omega work for her for free.  "I know you don't need them Omega. But like I said, you deserve to be compensated for your work. I want you to have them. Not all midwives are in the position to be able to pay their apprentices, but I am. It makes me very happy that I can do this for you."

Working with and knowing Citali had made Omega very happy and with all Citali had gone through the past few days, Omega wanted her to be happy too. Though it still felt wrong to take her credits, Omega figured if it would make Citali happy, it was the right thing to do. "What should I do with them?" Omega asked. She'd never had so many credits before.

"Anything you want sweetheart," Citali said. "A huge part of being a midwife is running a business, so learning what to do with the money you get is a very important skill. You can save it for when you open your own practice someday, buy yourself something nice from one of the shops in the village, doesn't matter to me what you do with it. It's your money. I'll show you my budgets and how I keep my books sometime but for now, just do whatever you want with it."

Omega decided to keep half in the credit purse Citali had given her and the other half in a jar in her room, putting the purse in her new bag of supplies. After they finish their conversation, everyone in the house loaded into the ship to head to the hospital with Omega co-piloting with Tech. Citali and Omega both gasped when they saw the progress that had been made in just two days. There was still a lot of work to be done of course but apart from the dirt and grime on all the surfaces, the room looked like it belonged in a hospital now. If Anaasa survived the operation she would still be at a high risk of infection (as would the vulnerable newborn) so they needed to get everything as clean as possible. Without running water yet, water had to be brought in from the small stream nearby to wash everything down. While Echo and Tech continued the repairs on the medunit, Wrecker took on the task of bringing the water.

He had found a large water tank in the basement and brought it to the stream where Melita and Marina were sitting on a rock waiting for them to return. With all the mold growing in the hospital, Melita thought it best not to bring the baby inside so she was helping Wrecker fill the container with buckets of water. She was reading a book to Marina, pointing to the page and describing the pictures, naming the objects and colors, as the baby babbled excitedly. Wrecker was looking at them both with a smile on his face. It was a beautiful sight: the sunlight trickled down through the trees around them, the love for her daughter evident on Melita's face, and Marina's innocent curiosity about anything and everything around her.

Wrecker was distracted by the beauty before his eyes and as he walked over to bring the container to the stream, he tripped on a rock and fell to the ground. Melita's first instinct was to run to him but she was taken aback when Marina started giggling loudly. She was torn between helping the man she loved and relishing in the sound of her baby's first proper laugh. She looked at Marina for a moment before running over to Wrecker to make sure he was okay.

She got down on her knees and put her hands all over him, looking for any injuries. "Are you okay Wrecker?"

Wrecker smiled. "Oh yeah, I'm fine. I've had a lot worse than this, trust me." He looked at Marina who was still giggling, the precious sound making him laugh. "Was that funny silly girl?" He said to the baby in a comical voice that made her giggle more. "Your friend Wrecker fell down, and you're laughing at him?" He started getting up from the ground. "It's not very nice to laugh when someone...whooooops!"

Wrecker dramatically threw himself backward on the ground again as Marina let out a belly laugh, Melita crying and laughing at the same time hearing the sound. Much like her smile, Marina's laugh sounded eerily similar to Wrecker's. Melita couldn't help wondering if this was how Wrecker laughed when he was a baby. But then she remembered how Wrecker and the others had grown up. There probably wasn't much laughter in his early life without any loving adults to share sweet moments like this with him. The thought made Melita want to cry more. She consoled herself with knowing however bad Wrecker's life had started out, he now had a new life and a family that loved him, and someday soon Melita knew she'd be able to return his affections.

Melita had started reading through Citali's psychology texts and using the herbs she recommended to ease her anxiety from the trauma of her previous life. Every day she had fewer moments of panic and at night fewer nightmares of the man who should have protected her and Marina, not hurt them. It also helped to know that Wrecker truly expected nothing from her. She wasn't used to that kind of unconditional love from anyone but Citali. The family she was born into never even gave her that. Her younger siblings adored her, but the older ones seemed to hold the same opinions about her that her parents did. That she had been a disobedient, reckless child who grew into a woman who disregarded her family's image to the community. As much as Melita sometimes still missed them, it was freeing in a way to be away from them and live with a family who loved her for who she was, not what she could do for them. Marina's birthday in a way had been a rebirth for her, and she was slowly becoming the woman she wanted to be.

After Wrecker threw himself down a few more times, he got up and took Marina into his arms lifting her up into the air. He kissed her dimpled cheeks as she rubbed her tiny hands on his face. "You make me very happy Marina," he said affectionately. "I can't imagine my life without you." He looked at Melita and smiled lovingly at her. "Or without you."

Melita smiled and embraced him and her daughter, kissing them both. "I feel the same way."

While Wrecker continued to bring water to them, Omega, Citali, and Hunter cleaned the ceiling and walls. Citali's comm device suddenly started beeping from across the room. She ran over to her bag and pulled it out to answer it.

"Hello, this is Citali," she said in her professional voice.

"Hello Citali, it's Hasii." Everyone in the room paused what they were doing so Citali could speak to her. "I started having contractions about an hour ago. I'm sorry I would have told you sooner but I wasn't sure." Hasii's voice sounded slightly panicked and tired already. "They're already five minutes apart and I'm feeling kind of pushy. I think you should come now."

Citali was already putting her bag on. "It's okay Hasii, I'm on my way. If the baby starts coming before I get there, call me and I'll talk you through it. I'll be there as soon as I can."

"Okay, see you soon."

Citali looked at Omega. "We gotta go, like right now sweetheart. Hasii, like pretty much all Weequays, has a history of precipitous labors. Do you remember what that means?"

Omega nodded. "When someone is in labor and gives birth in less than three hours."

Citali smiled. "Very good Omega. Let's get going, they live almost 50 miles from here, it's going to take us a while to get there on my speeder-bike." Luckily Citali had had the foresight to bring all of her supplies and the speeder-bike with her.

She looked at Hunter, Tech, and Echo and sighed. "I'm so sorry you guys. You've done so much to get this place fixed up and I've done hardly anything."

They smiled at each other. "Citali," Hunter started saying. "You've got to stop apologizing for stuff like this. We want to help you, and as much as you want to be here, Anaasa isn't your only patient. We'll be fine. Go do what you need to do. We've got this."

She smiled and hugged him. "Thank you, Hunter. I appreciate everything you guys are doing, I really do." She went to Echo and gave him a kiss. "We should be back by dinner. She gave birth in less than two hours with her last baby."

Echo smiled at her, "I'll have dinner ready for you guys when you get back." He hugged her tightly. "I love you," he said in Twi'leki.

Citali smiled at him. It made her happy to hear him speaking her language to her. It meant a lot to her that he was trying so hard to learn. "I love you too." She looked at Omega. "Alright my girl, let's get going."

Before they could leave Tech said, "If this patient has a history of precipitous labors, maybe it would be best if I fly you guys there in the Maruader."

Citali thought about it. If Hasii's last baby came in two hours, this baby was going to fly out. "Yeah, if you don't mind that would be really helpful. Thank you Tech."

"Good luck," Echo said to Omega as he gave her a hug and pat on the head.

Hunter got on the ground to get to Omega's eye level. "So...your first birth as an apprentice?" he said smiling at her. Omega smiled excitedly at him. "You've got a few births under your belt now, I know you can do this Omega. Just listen to Citali and follow your instincts. I know you'll do great."

"Thank you Hunter," she said as she hugged him before she, Citali, and Tech ran out the door.

Tech took off while Omega and Citali changed and cleaned up in the ship's refresher, Omega taking over flying once they were in the air. Tech landed the ship a few hundred yards away from the house. When Citali, Omega, and AZI entered the modest home, there were five children playing in the living room with an older Weequay couple that introduced themselves as Hasii's parents. They offered to watch Citali's "sister" along with their grandchildren, looking surprised and impressed when Citali explained Omega was actually her apprentice. When they entered the bedroom Hasii was already grunting, trying to resist the urge to push until Citali and Omega arrived. Now that they had arrived, Hasii couldn't hold out any longer and started pushing, the top of the baby's head visible with the first push. Omega got Citali's supplies out and brought over the supplies Hasii and her husband provided, while AZI checked the baby's heart rate. He tried to assess Hasii's vitals but Citali told him to wait until the baby was born. She knew how annoying that would be to Hasii when she was trying to push a baby out, and though everything was happening very fast, all looked good.

Hasii only pushed three times before the baby came out screaming into Citali's hands as she immediately placed the baby on Hasii's bare chest. Omega wiped the baby down while Citali checked Hasii's bleeding and felt her uterus. Though this was their sixth child, the couple still burst into happy tears as they welcomed the new baby boy into their family. Hasii said no matter how many times she did this, every time she gave birth she felt reborn into a new person. Citali felt much the same every time she helped someone give birth, her confidence in herself and knowledge growing every time.

Once the placenta was born and the cord cut, Omega took the placenta into the refresher to inspect it and make sure it was intact. It seemed to be but she had Citali double-check. Omega knew if a piece of the organ remained in the uterus it could cause heavy bleeding and infection, so she wanted to be sure. It was intact but even so, Hasii was bleeding a little too much for Citali's comfort. She offered Hasii a tincture for the bleeding and Hasii took it not wanting to take any chances, and the bleeding slowed down to a normal rate.

When it was apparent that Hasii and the baby were healthy, Omega and Citali went to the other room to give the couple time alone with their new baby. Citali explained to Omega that the first hour of a newborn's life was crucial to bonding and nursing success, so unless there was a problem she left the mother and infant as undisturbed as possible. Citali told Hasii's parents and the children that baby and mother were healthy as they all embraced Citali and Omega in a group hug and thanked them. Hasii's father then brought Omega and Citali some food and something to drink. After eating Omega played with the children for a while, the oldest a boy close to her age who was astounded someone so young was an apprentice, while Citali talked to Hasii's parents and charted notes. She still had a hard time letting AZI handle it, but she was getting better. She was at least letting him clean up and stuff now.

Omega helped examine the baby when the time came. It was a task she was very familiar with from her days on Kamino and was definitely her best skill so far. Omega talked to the baby boy as she examined him as Citali told her to do, explaining what she was doing to the newborn in a gentle, calming voice. Citali watched her with love, impressed with how good Omega was with him and putting the restless infant at ease. Omega enjoyed these exams much more than the ones she did with Nala Se, always feeling bad when she couldn't console or give the baby clones she treated the love and care she wanted. About four hours after the birth, once the baby had nursed, Hasii had used the refresher (Citali needed to make sure she could urinate at least once before leaving) Citali gave the family postpartum instructions and things to look out for, telling them she and Omega would be back the following day to check on them. Citali told Hasii how proud of her she was before hugging her and her husband.

When Citali, Omega, and AZI exited the house they were all surprised to see that the Maruader was still there. Citali had told Tech he could return to the hospital with the others. Fearing something was wrong, Citali and Omega ran as fast as they could onto the ship to find Tech tinkering with something he quickly tried to hide.

"Is something wrong Tech?" Citali said concerned. "I thought I told you you could go back to the hospital?"

"Oh you did," Tech said. "But Echo said the repairs on the medunit are complete, and he wanted me to fly you back when it was time. He said they could all walk home since it's so nice out today. He didn't like the idea of you, Omega, and AZI all piling onto your speeder-bike. He said it's dangerous, and I agree with him."

Citali smiled, thinking to herself how lucky she was to have someone to look out for her like Echo, before realizing the first thing Tech said. "Wait...the medunit is ready? REALLY?!"

Tech couldn't help chuckling at her excitement, he'd been thrilled by the news too. Citali hugged him excitedly as did Omega, Tech hugging them both back. It renewed Citali's spirit hearing the news. They returned home just in time for dinner, Omega telling them all about the birth as the others told them about their day: that the medunit was working and had been tested multiple times, the room was halfway washed down, and Marina had her first proper laugh today. No one was surprised that Wrecker had been the one to make her do it.

When they laid down in bed for the night, Echo and Citali took turns massaging each other's tired muscles as they talked, before they started kissing each other and taking their clothes off. They felt comfortable making love while the others were home once they realized they couldn't hear them in the wing on the opposite side of the house. Once they exhausted themselves, Citali let Snowball back into the room, all three cuddling together. Citali quickly fell asleep while Echo stared at her for a while. He still couldn't believe sometimes that this was his life now and it made him sad to think how little time he really had to share moments like this with Citali. Someday soon he would be old and wrinkled, and Citali would still be relatively young and beautiful. He'd talked to Citali about it before, Citali assuring him she would rather spend whatever time they could together than be with someone else. He felt the same.

This was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his short life with.

Liberation (Preview/Prologue)

Author’s Note: Hello again everyone! I am back but with a new Mando x reader series! However, this one will be slightly different in the fact that i am going to focus on a platonic relationship. I have always been interested in writing and reading relationships that are platonic because I think they are overlooked because of the lack of romance and I think people underestimate how much love and emotion can go into a platonic relationship ya know? So, I am hoping to convey that idea in this fic. I got this fic Idea from This Post by @ohtohavedignity​ Thank you for letting me write this idea from your post! Also sorry for no title, i COULD NOT come up with a title to save my life, but i will have it officially titled when i release the first  full chapter. You grunt with effort as you tackle the man twice yours size to the ground and deliver a hard blow to the side of his head, effectively knocking him out. Your breathing is labored, as you stand back up and see two more bounty hunters appear at the entrance of the alley.

The bounty you had captured, a weird looking alien you had never seen before spoke up from behind you, “Looks like we have company. I could be of real help if you take these cuffs off, I was a –“

“Can you please shut up for one fucking second!” you shout as you manage to down one of the pursuers with your blaster. But the other barrels into you at full speed.

You cry out as you both fall into the disgusting muddy ground of the alley, your face being pushed into the fowl substance beneath you.

“I think I’ll be taking that bounty off your hands,” the man whispered as he continued to shove your face into the mud.

“I don’t think so pal.” You retort before slipping your dagger from your belt and jamming it into his side.

He howls in pain as he rolls off of you an you take this moment to scramble from the ground, covered in a thick layer of mud and grab your bounty by the arm and run from the alley. At first the man struggles against you but you turn around and press the dagger to his throat, “Listen here asshole, I can bring you in warm or I can bring you in cold, you decide how this is going to go.”

Your threat seemed to work as he followed you obediently as you ran through the market towards the drop off point. You could see the building several yards away and silently celebrated. You were new to this whole bounty hunter thing, and with this being only your third bounty and your highest paying, you were ready to hand him over. But just as you reached the door to the home, a blow to the side of your head knocked you from your feet. Your vision is blurred by stars dancing across your eyes but it doesn’t take a genius to assume that it’s another bounty hunter. You quickly stand and go to pull your blaster from your side but the man that assaulted you drops to the floor before you can fire. As your vision starts to clear you see another figure standing behind the fallen assailant and you immediately recognize him.

It’s the Mandalorian.

You groan as he continues to point your blaster at you and your bounty, “You’re kidding me right? Are you seriously about to take him from me? I’m literally right here in front of where the client is, isn’t there a rule for this kind of thing?!” you exclaim, frustration lacing your words.

“Afraid not.” is all he offers.The Mandalorian takes a moment and looks you over. Covered in mud, a nasty bruise forming on your face, and clearly young and a rookie to the bounty hunting life. But he doesn’t lower his blaster, “My ships damaged.”

You throw your arms out to your side flippantly, “And? What the hell does that have to do with anything?”

“I need credits to fix it.” He tilts his head as he finally reveals his intentions, blaster lowering slightly.

You sigh and look from the bounty to the Beskar armored Mandalorian in front of you. there was no way you’d win, but you needed this money too.

“I just need enough credits to buy some supplies and pay for passage off this planet, so about 3,000” you admit, “You can have the last 7,000, that should cover your repairs.”

The Mandalorian doesn’t say anything at first, but takes in your pitiful appearance once again and he feels a certain sympathy for the you. It was obvious you really had no idea what this job entailed, if the exhausted look in your eyes and the mud covering your person was any clue. He sighed quietly, he has a ship, and he needs more than 7,000 credits to cover both the repairs and the fuel to fill it. He holsters his blaster.

“You can have 2,000 and then I can give you ride to where you need to go once my ship is fixed.” He offers.

Your eyes widen at his somewhat generous offer, “You would give me a ride out of here and give me the credits?” you ask still in disbelief.

The Mandalorian doesn’t say anything as he walks towards the door and motions for you to go inside, “Don’t make me change my mind.”

You nod, still in shock and turn towards the door, “Thank you.”

The Mandalorian just nods and follows you into the clients building to get paid. While his small and rare act of kindness may have seemed innocent, the Mandalorian hadn’t a clue what he had gotten himself into.

Raid on Crown of Five (The Truth)

Before our crew can reach Staketown Port they have a run in with a Navy ship and subsequently sink it. Miekka is on damage control and fully realizes what it means to be part of the pirate crew

The Queen Hermanwas nearing Staketown Port every day. With their bounty from Dunnhouse Cliff, the crew was eager to get there so that they could pawn the corpses for money to supply their ship again.

Miekka had no clue why anyone would buy siren corpses, but they also didn’t want to ask. The Company had never put their claws into it, but it seemed they were worth a lot of money and Miekka did not want to know why people on the pirate market paid highlyfor them when The Company wouldn’t burn their hands on it while they would burn down the whole world for a bit of gold.

They were closing in on the port from what Miekka had gathered. Their arm had been healing nicely and they were allowed to help with the sails again.

It was nearing noon when Stephan called from the crows-nest: “Ship on starboard! Ship on starboard!”

Captain Redfright got out his telescope and looked starboard as he called back: “Can you make out any identification?”

“Looks to be a Navy ship, Capt’n,” Stephan said.

“Navy?” Captain Redfright repeated more to himself.

“Yeah, I can barely make out the name, it says Crown something,” Stephan answered.

“Crown something,” Captain Redfright mumbled to himself, Miekka only heard it because they were nearby, “The name’s familiar.”

“Could be the Crown of Five,” Anna said, “Maybe good old Admiral Teal was assigned these parts after Gunpowder McGee and his crew blew that other ship to smithereens.”

“Aye, Mickey is a right one,” Captain Redfright laughed, before turning serious once more, “But if ‘t is Navy, no m’tter who, then we’d best sink ‘em now. We don’t want stragglers following us to Staketown Port, eh.”

“You give the order, Captain,” Anna told him.

“I sure do,” Captain Redfright said, before bellowing, “Get ready to board, we got a few Navy officers to meet. Sasha, divide the crew.”

There were some jeers from the crew as they set to work sailing towards the Navy ship, hijacking material at the ready. While they worked Sasha walked among them calling out orders: “Voyin, Karter, Lulu, Elijah, Tyrke, Nox and Dána, you board first. Go grab your stuff.”

Miekka heard some affirmations around them, but not every name had a face yet.

“Jonny, Wyatt, Pearl, you get the ropes to board,” Sasha ordered, “The rest of you, focus of getting our ship there. Keep an ear out if I send any more of you there.”

“Aye,” some said, before turning to their tasks.

They were slightly saddened that they had not been appointed to board the Navy ship, but they understood, they were both new and still not completely used to their prosthetic. However, they wanted to prove themself loyal and a good fighter.

Still, they decided that following orders was probably the smartest course of action, so they focused on tying the knot in front of them.

“We’ve been spotted. Incoming!” Stephan yelled.

“Krut!” Captain Redfright yelled, Miekka recognized the name to belong to Krut Cannon, the gunner on the ship. They weren’t entirely sure if Cannon was zir last name or a nickname.

Right at that moment the first cannonballs made impact with Queen Herman. The whole ship rocketed and Miekka was almost thrown off balance, only their years over the unsafest routes to save money kept them standing.

Others also stumbled, but no one fell, expect the few closest to impact. Miekka suspected that they were more used to cannonballs hitting them, a realization that made them swallow heavily.

Krut was meanwhile ordering a few mates around to ready the counter fire.

Sasha yells were heard over the noise: “Miekka, Iris, George, Talita, make sure we don’t loose cargo in the front. Dibu, James, Bertie, Manon, you get the back.”

Miekka tied down their rope, making sure it was secure, before hurrying down into the hold with three others they had vaguely talked to once or twice. As they walked, they heard Captain Redfright order: “We’re going to parallel the ship, get ready to fire!”

Loud bangs echoed from above them, but it was only background to Miekka’s ears as they saw what had happened in the hull. The tank that ran along the middle of the hold had been hit and water was gushing out.

The tank was an unusual feature on the ship and Miekka had been confused about its existence, untilthe Doc had explained it to them. Siren corpses wouldn’t rot as easily in the water and if they caught a live one, they needed it to stay like that until they’d sold it.

Still, that didn’t stop them from pausing on those stairs, watching horrified as water from inside the ship streams into the hold, colorful bodies swishing in the water and light shining through the holes in the hull.

“Come help!” Talita yelled, ey was bailing water back into the tank, something that would be futile if Iris and George weren’t grabbing stuff to patch the holes.

Miekka snapped out of it and ran to grab a bucket to help Talita out.

While they bailed water, they looked out one of the holes in the hull, trying to see if they were closing in on the Crown of Five. They saw the ship, sadly they saw the ship firing right at them. Wide eyed, theyyelled: “Incoming!”

Queen Hermanrocked heavily, throwing them off their feet against the tank. Water streamed over their face and they spluttered as they gathered their bearings, heaving themself up with the edge of the tank.

Iris and George seemed fairly well off, being to the sidelines when the convoy hit and Talita was already getting up as well. Ey saw them blink and offered: “You’ll be okay, just bail the water and we’ll fix this.”

Miekka didn’t know how they could ever fix the amount of damage done to the hull and the tank, but they dutifully started bailing water back into the tank, feeling a bit like they were carrying waterto the sea.

“Hmm, how curious,” Miekka replied, they’d never seen anything like that on a Company ship. Of course, The Company didn’t much care fore the safety of it’s crew, just the cargo and were not prone to getting attacked regularly, so they wouldn’t offer precious cargo space to something so idioticas spare planks to fix up the ship.

Iris looked up from where she had been hammering and spotted something. They wrinkled their nose and said: “One of them escaped.”

Miekka looked to where she was in confusion, until they saw the siren corpse laying in the cargo hull next to the tank.

“Come on, Miekka,” Talita grinned, “looks like we’re testing the strength in that arm of yours.”

If they were honest, they would rather not carry the dead siren, but even with all em bulging muscles, Talita wouldn’t be able to carry one by emself. Since sirens were not only colorful, but approximately seven feet long.

So, Miekka made their way over to the corpse and heaved the tail.

This particular siren was purple. It had purple stripes running up its side and a purple fin at the end of its tail. Along its cheekbone was a purple ridge and it had wavy fin like hair on top of its head and sharp fangs peeking out from its lips.

They also spotted some blood still under its big claws and the wound on its throat, which had been killing.

It was heavy, more heavy than Miekka had expected. Talita noticed their reaction and grinned: “It’s the muscle. Sirens are faster than you’d think.”

Miekka remembered how they had descended upon them and grimaced, before answering: “I think I can paint a picture.”

Talita cocked a brow, but didn’t say more as they tossed the siren corpse back into the tank, before gesturing up the stairs. Ey said: “We should go see if they need us up there. I would rather not face Sasha’s wrath, she’s mean when she wants to be.”

That made Miekka chuckle and they gladly focused on something other than the siren corpse, so they made their way back onto the ruckus that was the deck.

Most of the noise was coming from the Crown of Five, since they hadn’t made it aboard Queen Hermanyet. Small groups were protecting the ropes holding the ship together, while the others lined up at the side of the ship to stop anyone from entering that shouldn’t.

It was at this point that Miekka first got a good look at the Crown of Five. It was a sixth rate Navy ship if they remembered correctly from the convoys they’d seen around Company ships. That might be lowest rate ship, but those still had a crew of about a 150 people, which meant Queen Hermanwas outnumbered 1 to 5.

Their eyes grew wide and they froze in place for a second. Why the ever loving fuck, would Captain Redfright decide to pick a fight with a ship five times their size? He was famous for sound judgment, so why was he leading his crew to their deaths?

They looked around helplessly, trying to see if anyone else was seeing their impending doom.

The Doc noticed them and walked up to them. She gently elbowed them in the side to get their attention, they looked up and she asked: “You doing okay?”

“I am afraid we’re near the point of all perishing,” they answered honestly.

“The raid?” the Doc chuckled with disbelief, “We haven’t had a raid this good in ages. Admiral Teal really doesn’t live up to his reputation.”

“You must be joking. My good doctor, we’re hilariouslyoutnumbered,” Miekka said.

“For sure,” the Doc agreed casually, “But that’s not the point, the point is keeping them off our ship and sinking theirs. If we want their stuff, we might go for a less protected ship, but we just don’t want them to follow us.”

“Won’t they overrun us at any moment?”

“I mean, they could, but not with those insane bastard we send aboard,” the Doc told them, “Voyin by xemself is enough to make most piss their pants, but they send Flicker and Sam with the second boarding and those two are troublemakers, not to mention Tryke with their axe. We got some heavy hitters, don’t worry about it.”

“Are you sure?” Miekka wanted to believe the Doc, of course they did, it was just on the wrong side of insane.

“Very sure, they’ll come back.”

She was naturally correct. It took a while and Miekka was send into the line to keep anyone of their ship with their sword, but at some point other ship started to sink and they saw a man with an important-looking uniform flee in a life boat, while others jumped ship.

After that, their own people came back. Miekka didn’t count exactly, but it were about twenty armed people, who all differed from each other.

One impish looking kid skipped forwards and reported to Captain Redfright: “It was part of Admiral Teal’s fleet, but the captain here was a wuss and fled when we got near him. Dreadfully boring, he was.”

A tried looking boy next to them grumbled: “He only fled because you bit through the throat of that other guy. He could’ve had useful information, Flicker.”

“Oh, lighten up, Sam. We got them off our tail in the end,” the other kid waved their friend’s concerns away.

A big looking woman with an axe stepped up behind the two and said: “Sam’s right, Flicker. That escaped captain can easily go warn the rest of the fleet.”

“Then we’d bett’r get out of ‘ere,” Captain Redfright said, “To the sails. And Flicker, you’re on clean up,” the kid whined, but didn’t protest, “All the wounded check in with the Doc.”

There were a few scattered ‘ayes’ as people set to work, heaving the sails and tying them down and before soon the boat was gliding over the water to the hidden port of Staketown.

I know nothing of boats and all I do know, is in a different language, so I’m just winging it here, pls show me mercy on my boat stuff

January 23, 2021: The Fast and the Furious (2001)

Car movie weekend continues!

So, Drive was definitely more of a straight-up action movie with driving scenes. I can assume that this movie’s the exact reverse, with more driving than other types of action. But, first...truth time. I’ve never seen this movie...but I have seen a Fast and Furious movie. To be specific...

Yeah, that’s the last one, The Fate of the Furious. See, my girlfriend is a HUGE fan of the franchise, so we saw that in theaters on a date. It should be noted, again, that this is the only film I’ve seen in the franchise. That is, of course, until today!

I actually enjoyed the last movie, so hopefully I’ll like the first. Ive also heard that the franchise has changed DRASTICALLY since the original movie. So, let’s get into it, and watch the birth of the Family, shall we? SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Recap

A hijacking is taking place on the Los Angeles highway, as a delivery truck full of TVs and other technology is intercepted by an automobile gang using grappling hooks. Cool.

The next day, a guy in an electric green car (that I want, and would name Acid Storm) is doing a speed test in his car. This is Brian Spilner (Paul Walker), who goes to a place called Torretto’s for a sandwich. It’s namesake is Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) who waits in the back of the bar. His sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster) mans the bar, and is sought by Brian. 

This is to the chagrin of Vince (Matt Schulze), a potential rival for Mia’s affections. Along with Jesse (Chad Lindberg), Leon (Johnny Strong), and his girlfriend Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), he’s a part of Dominic’s crew. Vince begins a fight with Brian over Mia, and Dominic intervenes, telling Brian not to come back to his place, threatening his job at one of his friend’s establishments.

That night, Brian goes to a local street race, which is run by Dominic. Brian enters the buy-in for the race by putting Acid Storm (Brian’s Car) up for collateral. Using complex nitrous oxide systems, or NOS, the racers begin.

Brian uses a liiiiiiiittle too much of the NOS, and while Acid Storm certainly goes faster, it completely craps out in the process, causing him to lose. As Dominic is chewing him out for his poor driving, and is about to take Acid Storm, the cops make their way to the illegal street race, causing everyone involved to scatter.

Dom’s nearly caught, but Brian picks him up, saving him in the process with some slick driving. In the process, it’s revealed that Brian spent two years in juvie, while Dom spent two years in Lompoc, a federal prison, and didn’t have a great time there. In the process of fleeing, they’re saved, then held hostage by Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), the leader of a Vietnamese gang, alongside his cousin Lance (Reggie Lee). They destroy Acid Storm in the process.

Dom returns to his place with Brian, where a party is taking place. He chews out the rest of the gang for leaving him behind, then leaves to go upstairs with Letty. As Vince is about to start a fight, Mia steps in, and offers to take Brian home.

The next day, however, he’s arrested by the cops, for seemingly no reason. And that leads to...a surprise! Brian’s an undercover cop, forking for the LAPD and the FBI! Surprise! His real name is Brian O’Conner, so I’ll stick with Brian. The mission is to discover who’s hijacking the trucks, and Toretto is the number one suspect.

Brian brings a new car to Toretto, a beaten up wreck with an excellent engine. Toretto brings Brian on officially as a part of his gang, which immediately puts off Vince. They fix up the car together, and Dom invites everybody over for dinner. This leads to Mia turning Vince down for Brian, which naturally pisses Vince off.

At Brian’s other OTHER job, at a local customization garage, where Hector (Noel Gugliemi), the organizer of the street races, asks him to give him three sets of parts for three identical cars. Whiiiiiiich sounds like the gangsters. And they aren’t part of Dominic’s crew or Johnny’s. I’m calling it now, it’s these guys.

Later that night, Brian breaks into a garage to investigate, but he’s caught by Vince and Dom. He makes an excuse that he’s trying to figure out what the competitors have for vehicles, while Vince insists that he’s a cop, but the Bluff check appears to work on Dom, who must have a lower Will than Vince.

The three end up breaking into Johnny’s place, where Brian sees the stolen TVs. They also notice that their cars have no engines in them. But as they’re investigating, Johnny and Lance show up with a hostage, an auto supplies fence who hasn’t brought their engines to them. They oilboard him (gross), and he gives up the location. Johnny sucks. And Dom’s group sees all of it.

The next day, Brian gives his information to his cop allies (Ted Levine and Thom Barry), who also accuse Brian of falling for Mia, which could cloud his judgment. While they want to move on Johnny and Dominic, he convinces them to wait a few days.

Dominic and Brian are working together, when Dominic espouses some of his past. His father was a stock car racer who died in a terrible accident, due to the interference of a rival driver. Having seen his father die, and blaming Linder, he beat Linder savagely, crippling him for life. It also prevented Dominic from racing professionally, and landed him in jail, bringing him into his current lifestyle.

Mia and Brian officially go on a date, and seem to hit it off. Mia seems to be a talented driver all on her own, but that’s not the focus of the night. The hijackers hit again, and Brian gets the call from the feds while in bed with Mia. Johnny and his gang are arrested, with Brian coming along.

Unfortunately, the DVD players were bought legally, leaving the feds with nothing, and Brian with 36 hours to solve the case. Toretto is now the biggest target, to Brian’s chagrin.

The next day, Brian plays hardball with Toretto, and manages to get his way into Race Wars, which seems to be an in for Dom’s other pursuits. Although, I still don’t think it’s him involved in the hijackings.

Race Wars! The amateur racing circuit begins, and everybody’s there, including Letty, who smokes a guy for $2000. Nice. Meanwhile, Jesse’s racing up against Johnny, despite Brian warning him not to. Jesse loses the car to him, and takes off after the race. Johnny confronts Toretto about that, and the FBI raid of his house. Dom’s not a big fan of that accusation.

That night, Dom and company take off, to Mia’s protest. And STUPIDLY, Brian tries to get the truth out of Mia by telling her that he’s a cop. That’s gonna go greeeeeeat. Mia’s understandably upset about this, but also realizes that Brian’s telling the truth, both about how he feels for her, and about the fact that her brother’s extremely likely to get arrested or hurt. She still isn’t happy about it, though.

We also cut to Dom and the gang, now short of Jesse. And yeah, it’s him. Not gonna lie, I really didn’t think it was Dom! Kinda sucks that it is, to be honest. They start the hijacking, but don’t account for something: the truck drivers are getting PISSED OFF. They mentioned earlier that some of these drivers are readying themselves for potential hijackings. And it looks like this is one of them.

This truck driver means business, and is now actively trying to kill Dom and his gang. He fires at the cars, while Vince clings to the side of the truck. He runs Letty off the road, and she’s not doing amazing. Vince gets shot, and Dominic’s car gets shot right in the engine.

Brian and Mia, meanwhile, catch up to them in the newly repaired car (which I’m calling Sunstorm), and rescues Vince, who also isn’t doing amazing. In the process, he reveals to Dom that he’s a cop. And Dom...is also not happy.

Vince is airlifted to a hospital, and Dom and Brian meet each other back in town. They confront each other, just as Jesse finally shows back up with the car that should be Johnny’s. Johnny agrees, as they engage in a drive-by shooting, killing Jesse in the process. Brian and Dom chase after them, Brian in Sunstorm, and Dom in his father’s old car.

What proceeds is a tense, gun-filled motorcycle and car chase. Johnny’s shot and killed by Brian. Dominic shows up, then speeds away, as Brian gives chase. They meet at a stop light, and agree to a street race toward a railroad crossing, complete with oncoming train. If Brian catches him, then he’ll go with him.

If.

...Yeah, that was cool. But unfortunately, it ends less than ideally for Dominic.

Brian helps Dom out of the wrecked car, as the police approach. He gives Dom Sunstorm, allowing him to flee the police. Dom’s free, and Brian stays behind to face the consequences. Not that we see those, as Dom drives into the sunset of Baja California, living life a quarter mile at a time.
