hotboyissei 2021
The ding of the bell on the door of the small café brought your head up from the countertop you here cleaning. Instantly you recognised the blonde head of hair bouncing towards you. “oh hello again denji! Would you like what you always have?”. For the past two weeks denji had been coming to the same café every afternoon he wasn’t busy to- well for two things really. 1) for the amazing coffee, teas and delicious desserts. And 2) for him to see you, one would say it was just a teenage crush, no denji was sure It was love, that he was the one for you. Ms. Makima couldn’t compare to the beauty you held, no she could never. And you were so kind to him, always sitting down beside him to chat about his and your lifestyles, until your annoying boss would come giving out about you slacking off. Yes, he was certain it was love between the two of you.
Which is why today was the day he’d ask you out on an actual date. It took a lot of courage and guidance from Aki but he was finally here standing infront of you. “oh umm actually I came to ask ya something.” Cocking your head to the side slightly you placed down the cleaning rag and made your way around the counter to stand in front of him. “oh? Well then okay! What is it?”. Wait, he didn’t actually think he’d get this far. ‘Think, think, think idiot, what did Aki tell you?’ he thought to himself trying to go back through his and Aki’s conversation before he left. Not realising how long he was standing there thinking you reached forward and softy tapped his shoulder. “denji? Is everything okay?”. Feeling your hand on his shoulder his flushed face shot up to look at yours. “huuh?! Oh yeah! Everythings fine. Pl-please come on a date with me!” he clenched his eyes shut after finishing his sentence, not wanting to see you laughing at his silly question. After not hearing your laughter he peeled open one eye and seen you looking at him with a soft smile on your face. “of course, i’d love to go on a date with you denji! i have the day off on Friday so how about then?”. He stood opposite you with wide eyes like he just saw a devil for the first time. He shook his head to get out of his daze and then nodded his head rapidly. “Fridays great! See you then (y/n) bye bye!”.
And with that he ran out the café door with a proud smile on his face going back home to shove it in Aki and powers face. “Awe yeah baby woohoo!” he shouted out and jumped up into the air, not realising you could still see him and laughed at the boy.
Friday came quicker than both of you expected and now you’re walking towards a bouncing denji who jogs to meet you halfway. “hi (y/n)! these are for you!” he pulls a paper bag of cookies from behind his back and pushing them towards your hands. You look into the bag and see them and surprisingly they smell amazing. “awe thank you denji, did you make these?”. He looks at you and blinks twice before responding, “oh no I bought them over there” he smiles, showing his sharp teeth while pointing to a small shop to your left. You couldn’t contain your laughter and he felt his cheeks grow hot again when looking at your wide smile. “Let’s go!”. He abruptly says and takes your free hand in his own. You didn’t expect him to be so forward so when he grabbed the said limb, you couldn’t help but look down at his hand engulfing you own. it’s rough and calloused, but it’s a nice contrast against your soft palm.
The day consisted of denji brining you to the cinema to see a scary movie- the whole time you had a hand on his forearm and ducked into his shoulder when an especially scary scene popped up. And yes, you did have one of those cliché ‘hands touching when reaching for popcorn moments’. He then walked around the shopping mall and went into nearly every shop, laughing when you would take turns to pick out ugly clothes and try them on. He did actually buy you something without you knowing, but he was gonna wait a bit till he gave it to you of course. A few hours later hunger overcame the both of you so denji found a fast food restaurant nearby and dug into the food.
By now the sky was dark and filled with starts so you decided to sit on a grass hill and gaze at the starts. After about 5 minutes silence denji sat up and pulled something from his pocket. Out of the corner of your eye you saw him fiddling with the box until he saw you looking over at him. “Ta-da! I got this for you, here you go.” Sitting up beside him you looked at the dainty box, gently taking it from his hands you opened it and felt your heart swell slightly. Inside was a small gold chain with your name in the middle. “I r-remembered you mentioned that you wanted to save for one a while ago so I got one for you.” Looking up from the box, a smile broke out and without thinking you lunged forward into his chest, wrapping your arms around his neck, the two of you crashing back down onto the ground. “woah! thank you so so much denji this is so sweet!, I don’t know how to thank you.” suddenly his eyes lit up and he smirked slightly before tapping his cheek. Immediately you knew what he wanted and you giggled softly before leaving in and placing a small kiss on his cheek. When you pulled back he was looking at you with that smile, the one where his cheeks are stretched and his sharp teeth on display. You gave him one more peck before leaning onto his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
“thank you for today denji, it was the most fun i’ve had in a while.”
“oh, yeah of course!, does that mean we can do this again?”
“we can do it however time you’d like.”

How about one where the Aot girls + hange react to the reader playing a role in a action movie but dying in the end either a heroic way or a sad way
You don’t have to write a whole bunch but I thought this would be cool
OMGGG THIS IS AMAZING, i did something, I don't know if that's what you mean, but there it is... thanks <3 (i almost cried doing the part of mikasa's reaction)
× × ×
AOT girls + Hange reacting to your death at the end of a movie
POV: you are an actress and die at the end of the movie
WARNING: death
SPOILERS: Attack on Titan (season 4) and Fear Street 1666 (part 3)
× × ×
MIKASA (reacting to a sad death)
- You and Mikasa have been dating for a long time, Mikasa works with music, she is a successful singer
- You're a successful actress and you're at the peak of your career, you've been called up for a new action movie
- The theme was about giants that invaded the world and there were walls to protect humans
- You are one of the main characters, you were hired to be the comfort character of the movie, as the movie is very terrifying
- During the recordings some scenes were leaked and the audience already loved you and your character
- Mikasa was looking forward to seeing the movie and seeing more of your scenes, as you couldn't tell much about the movie
- One day after reading the script, you were shocked at what would happen to your character
- Mikasa bragged to everyone that your character was awesome and would rock
- On opening day you can take Mikasa with you to watch the premier with the other actors and actresses
- Mikasa was super excited watching your scenes, you were super fun, badass and fought super well, every time mikasa gave you little kisses congratulating you on your work
- Until a tense part of the film came, you were coming back from a war against an "enemy civilization", everyone started celebrating that everything had gone right in the war and that everyone was fine
- The guests at the cinema started to scream with happiness because all the main characters were fine, until...
- "NOOOOO" all the people in the cinema started to scream and cry in despair when they saw the scene of a little girl breaking into the airship and pointing the gun at the character of y/n soon shooting at her
- "WHAAAAAAAT" Mikasa yelled in your ear and you laughed, she was in tears, crying like a baby
- At the end of the movie, the character's friends appeared, taking flowers to the grave and crying a lot
- "Y/N, WHAT THE FUCKING END WAS THAT???? YOU DIED TO A FUCKING CHILD" she said still crying as you got ready for bed
- "baby I'll always be the potato girl, even after I'm dead they'll always remember me and love me... I forgive that little brat who killed me."
HANGE (reacting to a heroic death)
- Hange and you are actresses and were asked to do a thriller/action movie together
- You'll be doing part 3 of a movie, where you'll show the origin of a curse that happens in a quiet little town
- The film is from an ancient time, hange would play the daughter of a pastor and you would be a girl that people believe is a witch
- The recordings go perfectly, your characters like each other, but they live in a forbidden relationship in which people of the time believe to be a sin, so keep it a secret
- The kissing and making out scenes go perfectly, because you two date in real life, so it flows super natural
- The movie starts to get tense when you are caught in the act and strange things start happening in the village
- At home, outside of the performances, you and Hange talk a lot about the scenes, you still don't know what will happen at the end of the film, but she believe you'll be happy...
- Until then you finally read the script at the end and discover that actually y/n dies
- Hange is shocked by this ending, "y/n I can't believe you're going to dieeeee"
- "At least it will be a heroic act right my love, I'll save you from being hanged"
- "Oh my God I love you so much, but in real life know that I would do anything to save you and die in your place"
PIECK (reacting to a dumb death)
- You are a beginning actress and you were asked to do a zombie movie
- Pieck, your girlfriend was super happy to see you in scene
- As soon as the recordings started, you had to travel and you would stay away from pieck, you couldn't talk to her about anything from the movie, so as not to leak information
- the recordings ended quickly as it was a short film and the film's premiere shortly after would be released on a streaming service
- as soon as you came home pieck disturbed you to find out how it went and you just said "you will be surprised"
- Watching the movie together at home she started to get excited watching your scenes, you were the typical asshole character who cursed others and was an idiot and felt superior to everyone
- Pieck counted the minutes you appeared on screen "y/n, love, you already have 15 min of scene going"
- Towards the end of the movie your character starts running in the woods, trips and falls
- "FUCK, S/N GET OFF THE GROUND" Pieck yells at the screen
- "WHAT THE FUCKING END WAS THAT???? YOU TRUMBLE LIKE AN IDIOT AND DIED BEING EAT BY ZOMBIES?????? YOU SAID I WOULD BE SURPRISED BUT IN A 30 MIN MOVIE YOU ONLY APPEARED FOR 16 MIN AND STILL DIED IN THE MOST CLICK AND DUMB WAY IN THE WORLD"
- "BAAAAAABY" you laughed at her reaction
YELENA (reacting to a idiot death)
- "baby, remember the movie I told you I'm going to do?"
- "of course, i'm excited, do you already know what will happen y/n?"
- "yes I'm going to be a zombie" you say laughing
- she looks at you and laugh "that's nice baby, I bet that in the end they'll create a cure using your blood or something like that"
- "not really, it's just that I'm only going to live for about 5 minutes and I'm going to get shot in the face with a shotgun"
- "WHAT THE FUCK Y/N??? DID YOU ENTER THE FUCKING MOVIE AS A ZOMBIE FIGURANT?" she almost died from laughing.

So the ATLA Movie Is... Good, Actually?
Just kidding, of course it’s not, it’s so bad it sucked the paint off my walls. But after ten years of people pointing out its glaring flaws, why would anyone bother talking about this garbage heap if not to go the other direction? So here’s a very brief and very superficial list of things the movie does get kinda... not atrociously wrong.
And they won’t be fake hipster pokes, like “It’s fun to laugh at”, “The Rifftrax for this is OK”, or “Kudos to the actress for managing to say we believe in our beliefs as much as they believe in theirs with a straight face”.
(though now that I mentioned it, it is fun to laugh at, the Rifftrax for this is OK, and massive props indeed.)
Rasta Iroh
Yes, I know it’s not exactly the aesthetic of the real Iroh or that it makes no cultural sense for him to sport this do when no one else in the racebended Indian “OMFG what were you thinking Shyamalan” Nation does but goddamn, long-haired dudes are my one mortal weakness and I will ogle the hell out of him.
Jesus is that a man bun I see that’s it mum I’ve been deaded
Yue’s hair
No.
Now we’re talking. Yue’s hair turned white when the Moon spirit gave her life, so it makes sense for it to go black again when she sacrifices herself to revive the koi fish. It’s a neat detail I find myself expecting whenever I rewatch the scene in the show. Yes, I realize it’d be a pointless hassle to animate since she, unlike in the movie, immediately goes on to become the Moon herself but still. I like.
The Blue Spirit’s mop
Zuko, hun, what’s with the dance-off?
First of all, I want to imagine that Zuko the Theatre Nerd was about to leave his ship with just the mask like in the show but then stuck his head into the cleaning cupboard and went, “Yeah, more coverage might be good, even though it do seem mighty fried to shit”.
Which makes me giggle. I like to giggle.
And secondly, the hair’s movement is what makes the static mess of the Blue Spirit’s solo fight scene appear at least bit more dynamic because God knows the cinematography isn’t doing it.
Any particular reason why it’s at the edge of the action, shot all boring-like?
Now, I get why circular shots would be reserved for Aang while he’s in the practice area and then used once the two join forces. What I don’t get is why Aang’s part of the action scene has a defined visual style while Zuko’s delegated to a few stationary wide shots from afar as though he’s a tertiary goon, meaning that when the time comes to combine the respective pieces of cinema language and visually convey collaboration, there’s not really much to combine.
But as long as Zuko is stuck in this static mess, it’s that awesome disaster on his head flopping about that draws the eye, helping me understand that something even is going on over there.
It also prevents me from paying much attention to how the extras are mostly just staying put and a lot of the hits don’t land, so that’s good.
The music slaps
James Newton Howard is too good for this.
youtube
Pls ignore that the word “gods” is used in the ATLA universe
I can’t be the only one who constantly uses this piece to daydream about writing specific fanfic scenes instead of, you know, actually sitting down and writing them. It’s just so good at communicating a sense of sorrow while speaking of rebirth that I find myself getting misty-eyed whenever I listen to it. Unfailingly, the soundtrack as a whole manages to break through the mile-thick crust of horrible acting, confusing writing, and uninspired cinematography and make me feel things. And considering how everything on screen is working against it, that’s no small feat.
Imagine what a powerful experience it would be if the score was used in service of an actual movie.
Dev Patel
No wonder since he’s the only one in the film occupying that crucial intersection between “is a good actor” and “was given something to work with”. It also doesn’t hurt that he breaks with the trend of actors starring in martial arts flicks despite never having done any martial art.
And all EIP-jokes about “stiff and humorless” aside, he’s a pretty decent Zuko considering how abridged this version of the character is. A while ago, I remember hearing a reviewer say that with his comedic chops, Patel should have been cast as Sokka. And on one hand, yes, god, absolutely, I need to see that asap. But on the other? He captures all layers of Book 1!Zuko, the desperate obsession, rage, and self-loathing, and at the same time gives you a peek at the soft momma’s boy dork that’s buried underneath. For Christ sakes, he exudes intensity and ambivalence even when acting against an emotionless hunk of wood that’s giving him nothing in return.
Oh, and I guess there’s a tree in the frame.
Ba dum tss
What can I say, the guy’s good.
Showing vs telling
OK, so this movie is all tell and no show, except for one single moment. And it’s the exact moment where the original goes in the other direction in terms of how information is conveyed.
See, I never liked this. The revelation is preceded by Iroh giving advice to Zuko who scolds him for nagging. Iroh then apologizes, moves in to say the line above, and is interrupted by Zuko who seems rather uncomfortable with Iroh laying his feelings out like this. And once they’re out, Zuko verbally confirms that he knew already and Iroh didn’t need to bother.
All this extraneous information and pussyfooting ends up weakening what should be a profound scene that reveals to us, the viewers, how deep the relationship between these two in fact runs.
Compare to the movie where Dadroh acts like a parent by fussing and worrying, with Sonion needing a single look to tell him and us that he understands what it’s all really about.
It’s genuinely efficient and just good.
No Cataang
Fine, a bit mean-girl bitchy from me since I only start minding the ship in Book 3. And probably unintentional on the part of the creators since there are moments where I think they’re trying to set the romance up? There’s a, well, an attempt to recreate the famous introductory shot of fateful meaningful destiny of meaningness, there’s some slight note of saving each other’s bacon going on, I’m pretty sure they’re the only ones in the film who smile, and oh, right, Katara’s shoved into her post-canon useless role where she doesn’t ever do anything, and is all about Aang right from the get go.
Yes, I will blame the “executive producers” because a) I’m incredibly petty, and b) it’s perfectly in line with their vision of the character so why the hell not.
Hilariously, none of it reads on screen because the actors are just... yeah. These poor kids are struggling so much with delivering their own lines and portraying their own characters they don’t seem to have any strength left to create something between them. To be fair, the bare-bones shot-reverse shot style of their scenes doesn’t exactly lend itself to the idea they occupy the same universe, let alone are friends or each other’s crushes.
And I enjoy this immensely because it allows me to forget the depressing horror show Katara’s life turns into post ATLA.
Yes Zutara
I need to delve into this because it’s fucking hilarious. So in a movie which fails to establish the original’s central romance so spectacularly that if Aang got lost in a crowd I don’t believe Katara would notice, SomEOnE thought it’d be a good idea to add an utterly unnecessary non-canon moment where Zuko for some reason feels the need to pause his character-defining hunt for the Avatar which otherwise has him ignore everything and snap at everyone, and explain his central conflict to an unconscious peasant he doesn’t know, complete with gently pushing the hair from the pretty girl’s the soulmate’s the Water Tribe Ambassador’s the Fire Lady’s the love of his life’s her face away, AFTER his uncle nagged him twice to find a girl and settle down.
I just wanted to make sure we’re all on the same page and this is what we really saw.
Celibate Avatars
I have no idea why the decision was made, if TPTB thought expecting viewers to understand the story through the lens of Buddhism would be too much, or if the “executive producers” already worked their retconny magic. What I do know, however, is that there’s a big shift in worldbuilding and Aang’s struggle with his role as the Avatar stops being a personal conflict defined by a) his grief for Air Nomads, b) his notion of being robbed of the loved ones in his life, and c) the selfish attachment to Katara he confuses with true love. Instead, what he has a difficulty to accept is apparently a general notion of who Avatars are supposed to be, i.e. a fantasy version of Catholic monks, no family and worldly relations, period.
I guess either someone understood the original’s portrayal of de/attachment as “hermit no freaky”, or thought the audience would so why not go there outright.
Now, do I like this on its own? No, God no, it makes the world infinitely poorer and changes the story from an exploration of ideas which aren’t all that ingrained in the West, to a cliché tropester about a Catholic priest going Protestant so that he could be with a girl.
At least I assume that’s where they were going to take this eventually.
I mean, I think the direction was “look conflicted, this isn’t the final stage of your journey”?
But consider this—the show went there, it built on the concepts of Eastern philosophy and touched upon the ideas of spiritual awakening, only to swerve in the end and strongly imply they’re bullshit and Aang should have never wasted his time with them.
So honestly, I much prefer scanty worldbuilding to an insulting retcon by a damn rock.
Multiracial Air Nomads
Probably the most substantial “no hint of irony” point on this list and a genuinely good addition to the universe’s worldbuilding.
See, the notion of the elemental nations being perfectly separate and never mingling before Sozin has always been sketchy but it’s especially ridiculous in the case of airbenders. It never made sense to me for all airbenders to be Air Nomads and for all Air Nomads to be monks and for all monks to be chilling at the temples all the time to facilitate a quick everyone-dies genocide should an imperialistic warlord ever decide to commit one.
Because committing everyone to a single way of life at a handful of places kinda goes against the central philosophy behind airbending. Like the freedom and nomadism part.
Instead, there should be more variety to the airbending culture, with some staying at the temples as monks, hermits, and teachers while others live as nomads, travelling the world and creating more airbenders, with the resulting children in turn being influenced by the non-airbending cultures they grew up in.
And thus, not only should airbenders not be modeled after a single culture to create a one-size-fits-all lifestyle, but they should have the most diverse and dynamic culture out of the four nations.
And it’d be precisely this diversity which would pave way for an eventual reveal that some of them survived, that their complete extermination is impossible.
Because they’re everywhere.
You know.
Like air.

Did you enjoy Thor Love and Thunder? I know you gave a review but I don't remember what you said. I just saw it and was pretty disappointed.
I believe I mentioned if you like Taika's humor you'll enjoy it and that Natalie and Christian did a great job.
The thing with me is that when I watch an MCU movie I shut off my brain and expect one thing, fun. It's a bonus if it's actually a great film, but most of the time I just expect a fun time. Not to go all Scorsese here but I don't see them as cinema and can name maybe 3 or 4 films I think are sincerely good movies.
That said my review of Thor:
Pros:
Comedy and action lands. The former..... most of the time I mean
Natalie Portman is the heart of this film
Chris Hemsworth is good as Taika's iteration of Thor
The second half is way better than the first and the story is quite strong from that point
The chemistry between Tessa, Chris and Natalie are great
Christian Bale is great with the few scenes he has to work on
Cons:
Too much Korg!!! I freakin wanted him to die
The scenes with the children
The film was all over the place with the tone
It seems the MCU loves hyping Wanda and Captain Marvel's powers, but seriously love dumbing down and nerfing Dr. Strange and Thor. Like I feel Thor was super nerfed from his Thor Ragnarok and Infinity War iteration.
Coming from that I feel Taika put too much of the comedy of Ragnarok and none of the heart. Like some points of Ragnarok I did feel was a cheap laugh anyway but here it's just, dude you have one of the scariest villains here and I feel the scenes with Gorr and the comedy were two different movies.
I'm not the biggest fan of the ending.
I'll be honest, I always feel the MCU screwed themselves with Thor with how they were scared he was too powerful back when they introduced him. Now that they do have OP characters, they don't know how to use them properly and Thor looks like a wus next to them which shouldn't be.

Movies I watched this week - 39
I spent over 50 (!) hours on the sofa this week, (enjoying myself 85% of the time)...
Sløborn, an ominous Danish-German TV pandemic series, very much like Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ and in ‘Black Mirror’ style. Normal life of a small island community between Denmark and Germany breaks down and completely collapses when it is hit by a lethal bird flue like virus.
It was extremely prescient, as it was shot in 2019, before Covid! Conceived as Si-fi, it looks today like TV, because the series was able to capture everything that happened around the world after January 2020 in accurate details.
With Roland Møller (of ‘Riders of Justice’). 7+/10
✴️
My introduction to “The grandmother of The French New Wave”, Agnès Varda (Hard to believe that I never saw her films before!):
✳️✳️✳️ “Inspiration, Creation and Sharing...” Varda by Agnès, my first Varda is her last 2019 auto-biography, in which, at 90, she shared footage and stories from her life and work. The first sample clip (of meeting her Uncle Yanco in Sausalito) won me over, and the rest convinced me to catch up on everything I’ve missed through the years. What a wonderful artist!
✳️✳️✳️ Cléo from 5 to 7. A feminine film about female identity - a new favorite! A beautiful singer must wait 2 hours for the results of her cancer tests. With a magnifique mid-film scene (at 0;38) of the heartbreaking chanson 'Sans Toi', marking the beginning of her quiet transformation.
✳️✳️✳️ Vagabond, a story of a lonely, young woman, an unapologetic drifter, unglamorous, aimless, independent, desperately lost. Dark and nonjudgmental exploration of the refusal to conform to anything. 8+/10.
✳️✳️✳️ (For Sammy - Per our conversation). The Gleaners and I, "The eighth best documentary film of all time”, per ‘Sight & Sound poll. Derived from the famous painting by Millet. Simply wonderful!
✳️✳️✳️ One Hundred And One Nights, 100 year old Michel Piccoli “Monsieur Simon Cinema”, hires a young girl to reminisce with about the history of cinema. An unsuccessful Meta-film that nevertheless is a love letter for cinephiles. Populated by 3 dozens of Who’s Who of French (and World) stars, playacting in this symbolic, Fellinisque fable that draws upon the classics. Mastroianni, Depardieu, Belmondo, Alain Delon, Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau, Anouk Aimée, Fanny Ardant, Gina Lollobrigida, Jane Birkin, etc, etc..
(Photo Above).
✳️✳️✳️ The Young Girls of Rochefort, the wonderful, colorful, sentimental musical by Varda’s husband Jacques Demy, with the most beautiful woman in the world and her sister. Romantic eye candy set to music by Michel Legrand. A year later Deneuve would do Belle de Jour, and Françoise Dorléac would die in a car accident, 8+/10
✳️✳️✳️ Even better, The Young Girls Turn 25, Varda’s 1993 behind the scenes documentary and return to small town Rocheford, to show how it changed the town and left an impression. 9/10
“...The memory of happiness is perhaps also happiness...”
✴️
The other Jacques Demy modern opera The Umbrellas of Cherbourg knocked me over all over again. Catherine Deneuve’s angelic beauty in this film made me cry for the duration like a baby. And not only at the train station when they say goodbye forever.
10/10
✴️
Night moves, a tense thriller by Kelly Reichardt, about three radical environmentalists who blow up an Oregon dam. Slow and tense, and like her ‘First Cow’, watching it filled me with constant, low-level anxiety. The off-screen sabotage is placed at the exact mid-point of the movie: The first half is the preparation for it, and the second half shows the aftermath of the act. 7+/10
✴️
2 unexpected Small Town gems by Miguel Arteta:
✳️✳️✳️ The good Girl, an odd and surprising mismatched romance between 30 year old Jennifer Aniston and Jake Gyllenhaal (22) as employees of a Texas big-box store that is always empty. Her voice-over reminded me of True Romance’s Alabama Whitman. 7/10
✳️✳️✳️ Ed Helms, a sheltered insurance salesman from the backwaters of Wisconsin, goes to an convention in the big city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The nearly conventional story arc has some genuinely heartfelt funny moments. With Maeby Fünke, as Bree the prostitute and Sigourney Weaver as the ex-teacher he balls. Also a surprising drug party, where he smoke crack cocaine and loves it. 5+/10
✴️
Same theme of people prostituting their own ‘morals’, the notoriously-prudish 1993 Indecent Proposal didn’t age too well. “Billionaire”-porn that asks the question ‘How much would you pay for one night with Robert Redford?’ Gratuitous semi-naked Demi Moore included.
Related: “Stop hitting the button!”
✴️
Wildland (Kød & blod = Flesh and blood), an uncomfortable and claustrophobic Danish gangster thriller about a 17 year old girl who moves in with the criminal family of Sidse Babett Knudsen, her estranged aunt. 6+/10
“For some people, things go wrong before they even begin”
✴️
Jim Jarmusch‘s Broken Flowers, a touching road film with Bill Murray, as an old ‘Don Juan’ who receive a pink, unsigned letter from an old lover, letting him know that he has a 20 year old son he never knew about.
Loveliest film of the week.
✴️
The 2 films directed by Tom Ford:
✳️✳️✳️ A single Man, a sad and lonely gay professor, closeted in 1962 Los Angeles, is preparing to kill himself with a gun, after his boyfriend / love of his life had died in a car accident. Mute and haunting aesthetics in the fashion designer’s debut film, based on a Christopher Isherwood novel.
The ‘Stormy Weather’ dance scene between Charley and George. 8/10
✳️✳️✳️ Nocturnal Animals: Amy Adams is an unhappy owner of a fancy art gallery who receives a disturbing book manuscript written by her ex-husband, which symbolizes their relationship 20 years prior. Rarefied visuals and distinctive style.
Starts with an astonishing scene of obese old ladies dancing naked at Amy’s gala event. Michael Shannon rules as a dying Texas detective! 6+/10.
✴️
Jean Vigo’s 1933 classic Zero for Conduct was so blatantly anarchistic, it was immediately banned in France until after WW2. In silent film style, it tells about a group of mischievous kids who rebel against the authorities of their old-fashioned boarding school. Part-inspiration for Truffaut's 400 Blows.
✴️
Anatomy of a murder, Otto Preminger’s 1960 courtroom drama, with opening credits by Saul Bass. Crisp black & white cinematography, and with rape victim Lee Remick playing it as an outgoing loose girl of ambiguous morals, a modern floozy. 7/10.
✴️
Blush, a wondrous, spectacularly-animated, wordless short by Joe Mateo. What starts as a riff on ‘The Little Prince’, ends up like the opening montage from ‘Up’. The obvious realization that this is a personal metaphor makes the story even deeper.
I watched it twice back to back. 10/10
✴️
If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast - 95 year old Carl Reiner asks a bunch of charming nonagenarian friends how they manage to live so well for so long. Their answers may (not) shock you...
Spry Dick Van Dyke (92) and half-his-age wife end the film with a lovely rendition of “Young at heart”
✴️
Hi-school-level adaptation of Thomas Piketty's book Capital in the 21st Century. A breezy discussion of how slave economy and colonialist military repression 300 years ago turn into extreme capitalism of inequality & tax-avoidance today. America is now similar economically to what England was in the early 1800s. A tiny percentage of society controls almost all its wealth. (Full text of the book here).
✴️
Ride the eagle, a flat new indie about a guy whose estranged hippy mother leaves him her cabin at the lake when she dies, but only if he complete a certain list of tasks. Could be so much better, but the actor playing the guy was just so terrible. Unlike JK Simmons who had a small role. Best detail, when he discovers that all the cabinets in the house are full with pot.
✴️
Old, my first, (and possibly last), M. Night Shyamalan. The seductive premise of a secluded beach at a fancy tropical resort that ages everybody who comes there, turns into an unconvincing Twilight Zone bore.
...”(Gurgling sounds)”...
✴️
First watch: I never saw (any) Planet of the apes before, and in spite of my misgivings, gave it a go. 100% anthropomorphic, it couldn’t visualize a universe different from the American mindset of that period. Preachy and very Rod Sterling-like. "It's a madhouse in here”. Pass!
✴️
The latest Veritasium YouTube video about bowling current technology. Always interesting.

i (re)watched all the movies in the halloween franchise and these are my THOUGHTS
pretty sure i saw MOST of them during my initial horror phase way back when but in light of my recent re-obsession i had to dive back in...
ranking from best to worst:
1. halloween (1978) 2. halloween kills 3. halloween 5 4. halloween 2 (1981) 5. halloween (2018) 6. halloween h20 7. halloween 4 8. halloween resurrection 9. halloween 6 10-11. the rob zombies get shared last place
HALLOWEEN (1978):
i do subscribe to the theory that the original is always the best but there are times i do like sequels better so my bias towards this movie is sincere i promise. everything is perfect, from the setting to the soundtrack to the pacing, michael myers is portrayed in this particularly charming way that is never quite fully replicated in any of the following movies. he has an air of complete mystery about him while also possessing plenty of endearing quirks. the cast of supporting characters is great also, and i love that it manages to stay classy and not rely on gore and shock imagery which is also something all the following movies failed to do. truly great.
HALLOWEEN 2 (1981): this is pretty much just the "basic" sequel, playing it safe, and straying into more slasher cliches than its predecessor. it's not a bad movie though and i do enjoy it. michael kept some of his quirkiness but it is fairly noticeable that his charm and quirks are not quite there.
HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS (1988):
this one bored me a bit tbh, i'm not terribly fond of the michael myers family plot and all the drama was kinda boring, and also michael's new mask looks like a dollar store knockoff. not to mention laurie unceremoniously getting killed off off-screen. i honestly feel like i need to rewatch it in order to find more to say about it cuz it was just that forgettable but screw that. we're moving on to......
HALLOWEEN 5: THE REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1989):
what is he getting revenge for? we just don't know! as foolish as i find the jamie and thorn storylines i ended up loving halloween 5 SO much. like when it opens with michael floating down a river you KNOW you're in for a wild ride. it overflows with 80s aesthetic and campiness and i swear they even inserted actual cartoon sound effects in some scenes. michael myers still looks like a total mess throughout the movie but honestly, for this movie and only this movie, it fits. i also did not mind him showing emotion at some point because i don't actually hate michael showing emotion in itself, i hate it when it is done wrong, and in this movie it was done right, like it did not de-mystify him or take away anything at all. or MAYBE it was just that it added to the overall goofiness of this movie that ended up being so gosh darned charming but whatever it was it was great actually.
halloween movies really haven't been the same since donald pleasence passed cuz he always gave them his 110% sincerity, like?? it’s like he was unironically going for the oscars even in these trashy sequels. his theatrics were especially noticeable in halloween 5 where his character got to interact with tina williams who is the wackiest halloween character ever and my new queen. like you know i'm mostly into halloween because i love the michael myers character but i also LIVE for the scenes with loomis and tina. that fricking contrast. omfg. absolute cinema gold. #addtinawilliamstodeadbydaylight2022
HALLOWEEN 6: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1995):
oh boy i really did not like this one. after all that build-up with jamie, they kill her off almost as anticlimactically as laurie, and the rest of the movie is saddled with her child and i just can't deal with it. i find babies so incredibly grating that they're enough to ruin an entire movie for me tbh BUT to be fair this movie also focuses on the thorn plot which i also cannot stand. it really just demystifies michael and does not do the character justice. the producers cut was absolutely demented and while the finalized version makes it a bit more tolerable it's not by a huge margin.
HALLOWEEN H20: 20 YEARS LATER (1998):
rejoice for laurie is back and also the jamie and thorn storylines have been discarded! YAY! unfortunately this movie is pretty dull and focuses more on school life drama, complete with a cast of forgettable teens who would be better fit for “scream”, than michael, and also this is michael's ugliest mask yet. the chase scene among the tables toward the end was fun cuz i was like "hehheh that reminds me of how i used to play with my dog". also the whole thing with how the retconning of this movie's ending was planned? that's just bad movie making. but maybe that's just my opinion.
HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION (2002):
so this was SUPPOSED to be a follow-up of the previous movie but the first scene concludes that plotline and laurie and her son are never seen or heard from or relevant again. um... ok. what we get instead is an absolutely insufferable cast of shallow teens with zero redeeming qualities as characters, and michael still has that ugly mask. at least this movie gets the "most creative premise" award i GUESS??? it seems like michael would have a really good time in this setup but he just seemed kind of annoyed throughout the whole movie lmao.
ROB ZOMBIE REMAKES (2007-2008):
i just don't feel like talking about these separately because i hated them SO much!!! before watching all of these movies i read some behind the scenes stuff to get the context of them all, and i actually got hopeful that these remakes wouldn't be as bad as i feared because rob zombie seemed genuinely respectful in how he went about to make the movies (later edit: i ok i caught up with what john carpenter had to say regarding the remakes so scratch the “respectful” part LMAO honestly i could go for an hour long rant about what a douchebag rz allegedly is but that would mean spending more time on rz)... but yeah only a few minutes into the movies i already hated them. look. i like emotional slashers with tragic backstories, but it's not michael. rob zombie might as well have made his own story instead of messing with michael's. like you cannot make a prequel to halloween because it would just be some random ass family’s home videos. there was nothing remarkable about them and nothing in michael’s past that could be singled out as his breaking point and that..... is the point?? yeah??? so yeah i basically really hated how michael was turned into an emo kid and laurie into an edgy bitch lmao like this is LAURIE and the first thing she does walking onto the scene is making some crude joke. COME ON. also it was WAY too graphic and gory and gritty which, again, misses the point and charm of the original. come the frick on.
HALLOWEEN (2018):
perhaps the first movie in a long line of sequels and remakes that i feel like genuinely understood and respected its source material, we are now in the brand new timeline that erases ALL the previous movies except the original. this movie is not one of my favs cuz it focuses more on family drama and michael isn't even in it that much, but it is well made and the story is good, even though it does make a few questionable choices i will not go into cuz whatever.
HALLOWEEN KILLS (2021):
my favorite halloween sequel baby!!!!!!!! i saw this in theaters 8 times! it is a BLAST. it was THE movie that single handedly slam dunked me right back into the horror genre. it shows incredible expertise and appreciation of the original 1978 movie. the 1978 flashbacks are amazing. both the flashback and current masks look fantastic. it is so competent, yet it's not afraid to be fun and campy and honestly michael looks like he's having a BLAST in this movie. they really brought back his charm and quirks and showcase them to the fullest, and a lot of the characters they introduce are fun. LOVE this movie. the perfect sequel. other movies planning to get sequels take note. also my opinion is final and do not listen to critics. this movie is THE BOMB!!!!! (also did you know the movie they’re watching in the scene with the drone is “the funhouse”. it does not really have anything to do with anything but i just think it’s neat cuz it’s probably my fav horror movie BESIDES the halloweens.)

Just finished watching To All the Boys I've Loved Before: Always and Forever! Now I can't stop listening to Beginning Middle and End! Sigh, it's perfect for hopeful romantics like you and me.
Also it was my first time to attend a watch party via Scener, thank you for the invite, AJ sist!!! Am happy we got to hang out again even through a virtual movie date. Someday we'll attend film festivals when the pandemic is over, looking forward to the day cinemas open again!!
Time flies indeed. I just finished reading TATBILB book 3 on May 11, 2020 and I couldn't wait for the movie to come out and now it's here!! (Trivia: I shortlisted 30+ books during Big Bad Wolf 2020 but could only afford seven books. So I got six nonfiction (as a nonfic junkie) and only one novel—this was that novel.)
I'm glad it showed that love shouldn't hinder the pursuit of dreams; and they can grow together (both as individuals and as a couple) even when they're miles apart. I've seen people do that. One of my favourite power couples studied at Harvard and UPenn respectively, and their relationship made it. They're now happily married and I'm so happy for them. Relationships like these are goals :))
I can't help but compare the book with the film, but I enjoyed the movie in itself, too. 🥰
Some changes:
It rushed the proposal to Trina;
It totally simplified the promposal to Lara Jean;
It didn't show the initial conflict between Margot and Trina
It didn't show Stormy's passing (would have been a really sad scene huhu) and Lara Jean meeting John Ambrose again.
Lara Jean also gave the memory box instead of making a scrapbook.
Peter didn't give her the best tasting cookie in New York, but it's good she tried it herself.
The film also didn't show the conflict between Lara Jean and Peter's mom.
But if there's a change I liked, it's that Peter told Lara Jean their first ever meeting through the dedication he wrote on their yearbook. In the book, Peter wrote a really short dedication (and Peter gave Lara a hot photo of him so she could post it on her dorm room haha).
I also liked the little film surprise that Kitty had a happy crush on Dae!
Oh and of course, the major changes include the schools. And I actually liked it. Though the book has beautifully captured the campus of the University of Virginia, the plan B with William and Mary, and the plot twist of University of North Carolina, I think changing them to Stanford, Berkeley and NYU made it more relatable to a worldwide audience because they're more globally well-known.
Overall, it's a film that gives you all the feels while at the same time excites you to dream big. It tackles hard topics as well such as dealing with grief and growing up in a broken family.
I felt the bittersweet feeling when a trilogy or series that you love has ended.
I could relate with Lara Jean a lot, especially on the first movie when she never had a boyfriend yet and she was just writing letters. I love letters! And I never had a boyfriend, until today. Never been kissed, never had an MU or whatever haha. Though on the dreaming side, I could relate more with Margot. I'm a huge dreamer and I want to see the world. As for Kitty, I see the little me in her. Mataray, doesn't sugarcoat. But growing up, I've become more of Lara Jean with my quirks and very sentimental self. I'm also a daydreamer like her, and an idealist. Oh and, I'm a homebody! Give me books and movies and they'll be my date haha. Am a hopeful romantic. Although, I don't bake. But I make scrapbooks since I was a kid. I put art in everything I do. And I also wore literal gift ribbons on my ponytail in highschool haha. I hope, like Lara Jean, I find my Peter K someday (or actually, John Ambrose haha). But not anytime soon. Because unlike LJ, I think I want to pursue my master's degrees (yes, plural, that's the plan hahhah and yet here I am not even applying to any school so far) as a single woman haha. Well maybe unless I meet someone who can change how I feel, someone who will not hold me back from reaching my dreams, in as much as I will not hold him back from reaching his. But until then, it's best to be single haha! As a solo traveller, there are still so many countries to see on my own. Okay I'm daydreaming now hahaha!
Thank you, TATBILB and Jenny Han for giving us LJ and Peter K. Thank you for the feels and the pastel aesthetic and the great soundtrack. Thank you for introducing me to Leah Nobel's music!! (Am now in love with Coffee Sunday NYT and Talking to the Dog at the Party, aside from Beginning, Middle, and End!)
I wish I saw more of Josh Sanderson, though (I had a second-lead syndrome during the first film!! And I loved John Ambrose, too. Jordan Fisher is one of the best)
And thank you for making me want to go back to New York because clearly I have only seen less than 0.1% of it :(
I love how you captured a glimpse of NYC's splendor in just a few minutes! Of all the places you showed, it was only Times Square that I've seen in real life. But in time, will be back, experience the city, taste the same cookie Lara tasted—the best cookie in the world. And more. I'm daydreaming again haha! Here's a little selfie I had five years ago at Broadway 😄
For now, will take a break as my Dad and I are scheduled to watch Godfather II after dinner : ) Someday I will take him around the world!!! Amen in Jesus' Name <3
Omg I was just typing this and then Dad told me stories (right now) about his dreams to travel the world and we're going to places for lovers or astronomy. He's one big astronomy junkie, I tell you.
Who needs a date when I have the best date in the world, my Dad!!
Advance happy Valentine's Day, world changers!!

because i have zero self control when it comes to christmas films and, well, cheesy christmas films are #life.
basically, i have developed a collection of favourites over the years, including both classic christmas films that are fun for the whole family and terrible, dripping with all our favourite favourite cliches hallmark christmas films, and yet i am still always on the hunt for more. so, i thought i would try a little thing to share them with everyone else as well (and actually remember them for future reference)!
check out the tag here i will try and remember to use as i live blog some of these movies or head on down below the cut to see all of the christmas films i’ve watched in 2020. thoughts and star ratings included! as expected, i will also be updating this as i watch more and more this holiday season (follow along on twitter too if you want).
note: since i LOVE terrible hallmark films, some that i give a higher rating will not actually be......critically acclaimed. i am just #obsessed and have my reasons as stated, i’m sure.
holidate (2020)
⭐️⭐️| first time watch | someone on letterboxd compared this movie to when you watch a rom com in sims and it’s just a bunch of random scenes that make no sense and they’re absolutely right. its only saviour is an australian dude and the line “so you know me well enough to cum in my mouth, but you don’t know me well enough to get me a christmas present?”
my christmas inn (2018)
⭐️⭐️| first time watch | i’ll be honest, this film was pretty forgetful. i watched it over a month ago and don’t really remember what happened. however, i do remember being impressed that the leading lady wasn’t a stereotypical thin white woman. so i guess at least it has that going for it.
christmas made to order (2018)
⭐️⭐️⭐️| first time watch | i actually thought this was pretty cute. it’s not the best, but also not the worst, so a decent medium if you need to fill up those figurative christmas stockings. the concept of hiring someone to decorate your entire house with no budget sounds pretty cool, but when the guy is aaron samuels and looks far from straight, it becomes a little questionable.
last christmas (2019)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️| rewatch | now this is not a cheesy hallmark film. in fact, i LOVE this film a lot and think i saw it twice at the cinema. last christmas is a top tier christmas song and i remember theorising about it when the trailer first came out, but i will say tissues may be a requirement to watch this. AND henry golding is my husband thank u and goodbye.
operation christmas drop (2020)
⭐️| first time watch | interesting concept in theory, but this is nothing more than US military propaganda and a cgi lizard. bonus: white saviourism.
the knight before christmas (2019)
⭐️⭐️⭐️| rewatch | a medieval knight transported into today’s world and has never seen a car before can drive better than me. that’s it. that’s the movie. also, he literally says the words “modern technology is lit af” at one point. solid christmas film if you ask me.
the princess switch (2018)
⭐️⭐️⭐️| rewatch | i strongly believe in the vhcncu (vanessa hudgens christmas netflix cinematic universe). i also have so many questions, like how did they afford the flights or solid conversation or was it all expenses paid? how did they finish a bulk of the cake without a mixer? why does everyone always speak english with a posh english accent even though it’s a non-english european country?
the princess switch: switched again (2020)
⭐️⭐️| if we learnt anything from a christmas prince, it’s that sequels are generally never better than their predecessor. that being said, this was much less cute body swapping christmas fluff and a little more literal kidnapping and saving the day. either way, blonde vanessa was hot and i appreciated the amber/richard cameo that insinuates a christmas prince is actually a dramatic documentary.
midnight at the magnolia (2020)
⭐️⭐️| now if you’re after an absolute cheesefest that ticks the boxes on best friends meets fake dating over the holidays, then this is the movie for you! albeit it takes place between christmas and new year’s, it’s still filled with their families knowing they were soulmates the whole time and two people who are a literal too comfortable on the radio. also, the dad’s totally should’ve been gay. they had more chemistry.
christmas wonderland (2018)
⭐️⭐️⭐️| tbh, i genuinely enjoyed this one. post breakup/high school sweethearts is a personal favourite trope of mine, so throw christmas & being forced to spend time together when she goes back home into the mix and i’ll have a serotonin explosion. bonus points for the guy telling the girl to go back to nyc to follow her dreams without being a dick. OH and the scene when he points a fuck load of sugar in his hot beverage.
a wish for christmas (2016)
⭐️⭐️| who doesn’t love a good office romance between a boss and an employee at christmastime? especially when you throw in a little christmas magic that makes her more confident that results in her finally getting what she deserves and having to travel and rekindle with his family? also, fuck them rich white dudes, but props to her for the significant job promotion.
christmas with a prince (2018)
⭐️| this was TERRIBLE and not in the good way. it featured: an entitled prince who suddenly had growth even though he did nothing to achieve it, majority of the film set in one hospital room, and the fact that she’s the only one with a tiara at the party filled with people who actually have titles. also, thought there was a decent ending but turns out there was still another 30 mins to go. ugh.
a royal christmas engagement (2020)
⭐️| don’t be fooled by the title. the engagement doesn’t happen til the last two minutes. it’s actually about a prince (bet you didn’t see that one coming) who travels to america, pretending to be his best friend who works for this major marketing firm because he’s tired of being the spare. this gets one star purely for the line “she’s not a commoner, patrick. she’s an american.”
christmas wedding planning (2017)
⭐️⭐️| it looked like it would be half decent, and while it’s definitely better than the last two, it was still pretty eh. i could get on board with her texting her dead mother’s number as a way to talk to her still, and i understand we all experience grief differently, but.....actively paying your mums phone bill 3 years later? girl. also, the end made me SCREAM. WHY DID THEY DO THAT!!!!
santa girl (2019)
⭐️| this was just painful to watch. evil jack frost makes memes in his free time, santa has a fancy car and doesn’t eat sweets, and there’s an odd comparison between the elves, minimum age workers, and racism. however, one star purely for the entertaining (read: bloody awful) tooth fairy cgi that gave me a right laugh.
the christmas chronicles (2018)
⭐️⭐️⭐️| this was really cute and had the makings of what could be a christmas movie staple along with the likes of elf and the santa clause (but will never reach that standard, obvs). tbh, it’s just a nice heartwarming family christmas movie about two siblings who band together to help santa and save christmas. also, santa was a #dilf.
the christmas chronicles: part two (2020)
⭐️⭐️| one of these days i would love to see a sequel that’s better, or at least on par, with its predecessor, but that day is not today. sadly, this film lacked all the heart and magic the first one was filled with and some scenes were pretty redundant. kurt russell and goldie hawn, however... one star for each of them.
forever christmas / mr. 365 (2019)
⭐️⭐️| the title varies depending where you’re from, but that’s probably the most exciting part of this movie. a guy celebrates christmas 365 days a year and a reality show wants to invade his house? ok, sure. one star for the eye candy and one star for, surprisingly enough, their chemistry and all the kissing scenes that don’t usually make the mark in the hallmark world.
noelle (2019)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️| did i renew disney plus just so i could watch this (and a couple of others)? maybe so... this movie is so fun! and family friendly! and is actually funny! it gives me major elf vibes, but if elf was set in a more modern day setting. either way, i had a great time and have been holding out on this one after loving it a lot last year!
the nutcracker and the four realms (2018)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️| anything nutcracker related is an instant win in my book because it’s my favourite ballet of all time (except for graeme murphy’s version, we don’t talk about that). does this movie actually deserve the four stars? maybe not. am i going to give them anyway purely for my love of the nutcracker and the soundtrack? absolutely!
#leeshmas2k20#no one probably cares but i just thought it would be fun!#might actually post these on letterboxd too

tiny marshmallows
a/n: i got this idea from a book i read a long time ago and i remembered this scene last night and i had to write it with bucky! let me know what u guys think <3 requests for marvel characters are open !
masterlist
Bucky was a puzzling person to say the least. No matter how hard you tried, you could never figure out where his head was at. When you thought you knew him and had him all figured out he would do a full 180 and you’d be back at square one. You both talked quite frequently, you would consider the super soldier a friend, but you weren’t sure if he would say the same.
You slipped on your raincoat and headed out the door, upset that the whole compound forgot to buy a box of hot chocolate, despite you definitely texting steve to add it to the list. You ran towards your car, getting your shoes wet and the bottom of your jeans slightly damp as you ran through a puddle.
After a couple of minutes you arrived at the grocery store, heading straight for the box of hot chocolate packets. As you grabbed the box you smiled to yourself and snatched a bag of tiny marshmallows as well. After braving the storm once more and running back to your car, your teeth were chattering and your hair was dripping.
As you arrived back to the compound you decided to hide the box and the marshmallows until the perfect occasion came, but you couldn’t wait that long. So instead you made sure to schedule a movie night in a couple of hours. That would give you time to shower change and make everyone a cup of hot chocolate. You smiled and sent out the message, going to your room to kill some time and change.
As the time for movie night neared you headed down to the main area of the compound to make the hot chocolate, lining up all the mugs and getting them ready. You put the tiny marshmallows in all of them, stopping at Buckys.
Would he like them? I mean yeah he would who doesn’t. Right? He’s so tough and such a hardass, you’d only seen him smile once when sam almosy fell off the roof doing a dare- that is not tiny marshmallow personality. You decided against it and as everyone trickled down from their rooms you handed them a mug, smiling as they all gave you a thank you and hugged you.
Bucky was the last one to come down, he almost walked past you but you noticed the glint of his metal arm as he walked past the lights.
“oh bucky! Here i made everyone hot chocolate” you spoke softly, handing him the mug with puppies on it. He felt his heart swell with adoration as your cheeks grew pink when you realized the mug you had given him.
“I didn’t realize- i mean there were no other ones left, i can go switch it out im sorry” you rambled, attempting to take back the puppy mug.
“no don’t worry i love it” he spoke softly and you smiled, you heart skipping a beat as you soaked in how charming he looked.
“okay” you breathed out softly, walking away biting your bottom lip to keep you from smiling too hard. As you grabbed your own mug, you placed it on the coffee table, going to stand infront of the screen to tell the team what they were about to watch.
“okay we are about to watch the best Disney princess movie, any guesses?” You spoke up, pointing at Sam who looked confident.
“frozen” he smirked and you shook your head, warning a gasp from him. You pointed at Steve who looked at you quizzically “mulan?” you shook your head once again, earning protests from Wanda and Natasha.
“I said movie not princess” you smirked, causing the women to nod and look at you approvingly.
“No more guesses? Cmon guys!” You smiled widely at everyone, excited to subject everyone to your favorite princess movie.
“tangled” you heard bucky whisper. Your whole body lit up and you ran to hug him without thinking twice.
“yes! Tangled! Prepare to watch poetic cinema and fall in love with Flynn rider” you spoke, squealing as you hit play and sat between Steve and Wanda.
“you got marshmallows?” bucky whispered to Sam looking from him own mug to his friends mug. “Yeah you didn’t?” He asked, looking at Buckys mug and noticing the lack of the fluffy sugar bombs.
Bucky frowned slightly, was he not to level for your tiny marshmallows? He shook the thoughts away as he saw you mouthing the words to the scene, smiling when you caught bucky staring at you. Bucky turned bright red and he was very thankful it was dark.
As the lantern scene came on bucky couldn’t help but look at you as you watched in awe. A small smile playing your lips as the couple on the screen sang.
The words rang through Bucky’s ears, his heart beating fast as he realized his feelings for you. While the rest of the team was falling in love with Flynn Rider singing, Bucky fell in love with you softly singing along.
As the movie continued Bucky grew more and more nervous. What the hell was he gonna do? You were one of the few people that Bucky actually was friends with, and now he’s gonna mess it all up because he has feelings for you.
Bucky excused himself from the movie, slipping out with his now empty mug, heading towards his room. He stopped at the kitchen, putting his mug in the sink and closing his eyes for a second to set his mind straight. Did he really like you or was his mind just playing tricks on him?
Since the moment he got to the compound you were sweet to him, always offering to help him, trying to coax him to do more things and live in the moment. You were always there for him, but he was too scared to fully let you in. Yet, there you were always trying to get in, knocking at the door of his heart.
“Bucky? Are you okay? You walked out of the movie” you spoke up, scaring the super soldier slightly as he jumped at the sudden voice in the silence.
“what? oh yeah I’m okay, just tired is all” he gave you a tight smile and you furrowed your brows at him, coming closer the the tall man.
“no you aren’t, i saw you tearing up and then smiling, that’s not what you do when you’re tired” you looked at him, scanning his whole body to check if he was okay physically before finally settling your gaze on his face. You took in the light stubble on his chin and cheeks, the crinkles by his eyes and the now slightly long hair that had grown out since his last haircut.
“i just need to think about some stuff, by myself” he spoke, avoiding your gaze. You felt your heart sink a little. Bucky never skipped your movie nights. Even when he had a mission where he had to leave at 4 a.m. Bucky stayed up until 2:30 a.m. watching Marley & Me and sniffling besides you.
“oh- I’ll leave you then” you spoke softly, turning on your heel and walking back to where everyone else wat he’d the movie intently. Bucky let out a sigh as he searched high and low for the tiny marshmallows, maybe you had run out of them.
As he opened the furthest cabinet and bent over he saw the small bag of the sweet stuff, his heart sinking as he closed it and went to his room.
The weather grew warmer and warmer as time passed and you had yet to make more hot chocolate since the last movie night a week ago. You and bucky had talked since the last encounter, you had brushed it off and gone back to your cheery self towards him, he kept to himself a little more.
It was around 1 in the morning when you realized how badly you wanted some hot chocolate. You quietly and quickly got out of your bed, slipping on some fuzzy socks and going down to the kitchen area, grabbing your marshmallows where you kept them hidden and a pack of instant hot chocolate. As you heated the milk up and watched your show on your phone you heard someone coming down the steps.
You lifted your attention from the screen and paused it, waiting to see who was to join you this late at night. You saw the familiar pair of sweats and smiled internally. Instinctively going to fix your head and checking your reflection to see how you looked.
“why are you up this late?” You questioned the metal armed soldier and he gave you a small smile.
“couldn’t sleep” he responded, looking at the mug you had on the counter and taking note of the milk in the microwave. “making hot chocolate?” You smiled at him and nodded.
“want some?” You asked, already reaching for a mug and another pack of hot chocolate.
“yeah sure why not” he looked at you softly as you grabbed milk out of the fridge, taking out your now warmed milk and pouring it in his mug. You glanced at the tiny marshmallows and thought about putting them in, once again deciding he was too tough for that.
“is it- can i-” Bucky sputtered, his cheeks heating up and he took a deep breath in and exhaled. “can i have some marshmallows? I really love them in hot chocolate” he spoke, pink dusting his cheeks and his ears growing extremely hot.
You blushed and a wide smile spread across your face. “of course! sorry i just never added them because- uh yeah” you cut yourself off, not wanting him to get mad at you.
“why? you can tell me i can keep a secret” he smiled and winked at you as you added a handful and then some of marshmallows to his cup.
“i just- i thought since you’re so intimidating you wouldn’t like something like tiny marshmallows” you mumbled, looking at the floor and trying to avoid his gaze at you.
Buckys heart sank for a second before he felt his chest swell with love for you. He smiled softly at the way you were fiddling with a ring on your finger and how you shifted your weight onto one leg.
“you think I’m intimidating?” Bucky asked, a small smile still playing upon his lips. You looked at him and nodded your head, looking for any sign of sadness or negative emotions.
“I mean it’s not like you’re the easiest person to warm up to, one time i said hi to you and a second later i heard your metal arm whir- i thought you were gonna beat me up” you looked at him, your brows furrowed as he continued to smile at you.
“doll i would never hurt you” he spoke, leaning down to whisper in your ear, “between me and you, you’re my favorite person in the compound” he smiled at you and you blushed, a shy smile covering your face as you looked up and into his blue eyes.
“had i known the best assassin in the world was into tiny marshmallows i would’ve never taken him seriously” you joked, adding more marshmallows to his cup, an attempt to make up for the ones you hadn’t given him before.
As time passed you and bucky grew closer, sharing cups of hot chocolate, full to the brim with tiny marshmallows. The two of you sitting on the roof, your legs swinging off the side of the building while bucky held you tightly, making sure you didn’t fall.
Bucky liked you, so so so much. That’s why he was freezing his ass off on the roof, looking at the stars and the tree line behind the compound with you. That’s why he always made sure there was instant hot chocolate in the compound. That’s why he always made sure that before you walked into the training room he had his muscles flexed.
That’s why he put his mug down and looked at you, taking in a deep breath and trying to stop himself from backing out of this.
“y/n” he began, you turned to face him, smiling at him as he began to talk. “listen I’ve had a crush on you for so long, i didn’t know how deep i was in until that night that we watched tangled. I knew i liked you but it’s so much more than that, i wanna soend all my time with you, i wanna know the little things about you and i want you to know that about me” he paused, searching your face for any sign that he should stop. “I wanna make sure you know that i love tiny marshmallows, and i want to be disgustingly soft with you and-” you leaned in and kissed him, cutting him off.
He pulled back and smiled at you, looking into your eyes, confused but happy. He leaned back in, kissing your lips while his hand rested on the back of your neck. You both smiled into the kiss, laughing when you both pulled away with red faces.
“you were rambling. Figured I’d save you some time and just show you how i felt” you whispered, the two of you still close enough that he could hear you. He nodded and closed his eyes, screwing them shut while he grinned widely.
“does this mean you’ll be my girl?” he asked and you nodded.
“of course you fucking softie” you laughed, biting your bottom lip before throwing your arms around him and burying your face into the crook of his neck.

A Date With Prince Ali
Author’s note: I admit I was using this story as an excuse to gush about Knives Out; an enjoyable movie even if you're like me and your biggest exposure to mystery stories are Scooby Doo episodes and movies.Over a year of Ladybug salt and LIla Salt; different types of stories and using pairings with Felix and Damian Wayne (not a fan of either of those pairings to be honest). Then I realised why not try one that is Marinette X Ali as surprisingly enough there are no stories of that yet.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng just sighed when class was just finishing and Lila began spinning off her latest tale about some celebrities that she had supposedly met, really it was quite frustrating how all suckered in they were. Nino told everyone about how his parents were taking his little brother Chris to an appointment so they could have their own party there with him as a DJ.
Lila of course said she would love to come over when she has time and has another story she has been waiting for the right moment to tell them. This made Marinette groaned and Marinette almost missed it when Nino asked if she can expect to find her there.
"Oh no sorry Nino, I already have plans..." Marinette told him and then saw disappointed glances from most of the classmates as this was another occasion she had missed out with Lila involved. "Look sorry but I already have plans; I'm going to go see Knives Out tonight." Marinette explained and everyone looked at her incredulously as everything they knew about the movie didn't seem like it would be one Marinette would see.
Then of course Lila was putting up a facade of how disappointed she was that Marinette would not be coming. "Really girl, if you don't want to come because Lila is coming then you can at least be honest and tell us... No need to make up a story on the spot..." Alya chided her and Marinette sighed at her words along with the disapproval that came from Adrien.
It wasn't an excuse and she really did plan to go see the movie that afternoon, she had been looking forward to it for some time.
What her classmates didn't know was that she was actually a big fan of mystery stories, from her childhood of watching mystery movies with her parents (she watched a lot of the TV show about Hercule Poirot), watching Scooby Doo as well as reading the Agatha Christie books. She actually loved watching the mysteries build up with all the clues and red herrings built up and put together in the ending.
In fact when she was accused of stealing by Chloe she was putting her deductive skills to rest and she also got to use them when she began to suspect that Adrien's father was Hawk Moth. She rarely got to use the skills she developed from all the mysteries stories she had seen and read.
True the deductive skills failed to convince her classmates that Lila was lying but that was neither here nor there.
Later she got home and noticed a parcel for her and she opened it to see a necklace looking like it came from the kingdom of Achu and guessed it must have come from her secret admirer again. She had been getting presents and letters in the mail for a small while from a secret admirer saying they had only just gotten the courage to send these tokens of their feelings towards her.
She began wondering who it could be with her first hope being that it was from Adrien but soon her feelings began dying out. It had to do with his words about Lila's lying not hurting anyone.
What instantly could get her out of a Lila related sour mood was wondering who could be her secret admirer; she had yet to tell Alya about it. Mostly because she was pretty much dreading whatever scheme Alya could cook up to find out who it could be.
Some of the presents were mostly jewellery and she figured it must be someone well off, one of her first candidates was Luka but looking at the expensive jewellery it may not be there. Unless the Couffaines were secretly wealthy and were being humble about it to the point of living in their small houseboat. Currently her best candidate would be Kagami.
Her parents were gushing about her latest gift from her admirer and were encouraging her to wear it for the movie today. She thought it would be a little much but she decided to do so. She had changed into a detective outfit she had designed and Tikki was asking about where it came from.
She had explained that during the last summer at a birthday party for one of her cousins; it was a murder mystery role play party that she was so excited for and designed everyone's outfit. Her role was as the lead detective's deputy.
She had gotten to the door but then saw someone enter through the door and it was someone in a hooded jacket along with some sort of chaperone bodyguard. The person took his hood down and saw it was Prince Ali of Achu.
"Prince Ali, what a surprise..." Marinette blurted out remembering when she had last saw him as Ladybug. Rose had told everyone about how excited she was to have ice cream with him and some time ago she had been disappointed to tell them that Prince Ali admitted to her in his last message that he liked someone else and was sending her letters before he can finally confess in person.
She felt sorry for Rose and tried to console her along with the other classmates, Lila made a half hearted story that she was asked by Prince Ali himself to keep it secret that she liked some other princess. Of course they had eaten it up.
Rose had said that Prince Ali really spoke fondly of her and said he hadn't had a chance to see her along but she was kind, clumsy and adorable with a passion for fashion.
Marinette knew that Prince Ali was in France related to a charity he was doing and how it would be a busy one, Lila made up a claim that she would try and see if they can get time to get them to see him again. Lucky Lila counted on the fact that it was reported that he would only be in France for 3 days and how unlikely it would be that he would be in Paris to see them.
A part of her thought about directly asking him about Lila but she decided she didn't want to use him like this to settle a grudge against a bully.
"Marinette, hasn't had time to see you directly..." Prince Ali admitted to her with a blush with Marinette feeling like she should be questioning why he was there. "I managed to make enough time in my schedule to come here and see the girl I liked." Prince Ali told her sheepishly and Marinette froze having put the clues together:
The presents having come at the same time when Rose talked to Prince Ali with his message about sending presents to his crush and the description of this crush.
Uh oh...
"I am... flattered your majesty but... Rose likes you and I am sure a girl code or a sis code exists..." Marinette trying to come up with the best excuse she could do. Her parents were no help as they were gushing about it and how Marinette was always a princess to them.
"Rose is a good friend but I can't help it when I saw a pretty girl and what Rose told me about you; how helpful and kind you are. I noticed your designs on your website and I was amazed by your talents. Plus the achievements you have made." Prince Ali told her and Marinette's cheeks began going red. "Are you doing anything tonight?" He asked hopefully and she shook her head.
"Sorry but I already made plans, I want to see this movie at the cinema called Knives Out..." Marinette told him and Prince Ali put out his hand offering to treat her to a movie. Her brain shut down and it only rebooted again when she noticed she was led to his limo.
She smiled awkwardly at Prince Ali as she sat next to him, she then began wondering if she even liked him like that. He was handsome alright but that was not enough for her to fall for someone; she knew Adrien was handsome but didn't care for him when she thought he was a bully friend of Chloe. She only started to fall for him at the umbrella incident.
Maybe she could give Prince Ali a try as he was a nice boy starting charities and being nothing but kind to Rose.
They reached the cinema and Prince Ali helped Marinette out as they entered with his chaperone and his hood disguise back up, they got in line and paid for their tickets. They got to the screening room and Marinette noticed Aurore and Mireille there who recognised Marinette but not her apparent date. They were going as Chris Evans fans and were wierded out when Marinette revealed she was a mystery fan.
They sat down and the ads and trailers played and followed by a message from the movie's director Rian Johnson asking the audience not to spoil the ending to their friends as it was a whodunit mystery. Marinette with a serious look on her face zipped her mouth shut at that which Prince Ali laughed at and she just looked sheepish.
They watched the movie and during the first act Marinette saw how intentionally horrible most of the characters were. while because she hated being scared was the main reason why she hated horror movies another one was because it was hard to like any of the characters in those movies and want to see them survive.
They laughed at scenes in it (especially at Daniel Craig's hilarious accent) while Marinette was analysing any potential clues and feeling tense as it went on. The movie ended and Marinette left with Prince Ali gushing with the others about how good it was but Marinette made a move of asking they be silent about spoilers when they got out of the cinema room.
Marinette took mystery stories very seriously.
They got out of the cinema and Marinette gave him a kiss on the cheek as they went began smiling awkwardly at each other. Then somebody shouted that it was Prince Ali and they just noticed his hood fell down. They quickly got back into the limo and it drove off.
The paparazzi followed them back to the bakery and Prince Ali helped Marinette out and got her into her home as they had taken pictures of them.
At Nino's party, Nino had told her big story and was going on about how twenty minutes ago Prince Ali phoned her about some paperwork he had just finished at the moment to open an orphanage in her name.
Then Rose screamed out looking at her phone saying Prince Ali was in Paris right now and was seen exiting their local cinema with a date! She was gushing about Prince Ali finding love with her crush but then the classmates began looking at Lila asking about what she had just said despite her attempts to change the subject.
Curse the horrid timing.
Rose's eyes were bulging and told everyone to come and see who it was and everyone was speechless when they saw the photos. Lila looked herself and let her frustration get the better of her and ranted about Marinette on the spot.

Best Films of 2019 (So Far)
It’s that time of year again! As most of my followers probably know, I’m an avid cinema-goer beyond Star Wars. I also quite enjoy making lists, so what’s better than a combo of the two? Below, I run down my top 10 films of 2019 so far - please note that this list is based on UK cinema release dates, so some of these films were 2018 releases elsewhere.
What are your favourites so far from this year? Let me know in replies/asks!
Honourable mentions: Toy Story 4, Long Shot, Aladdin, Alita: Battle Angel & The Kid Who Would Be King
1. The Favourite, dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
This completely wowed me - it features a trio of magnificently compelling female characters (played by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) operating at the court of Queen Anne (Colman is Anne, Weisz and Stone are courtiers), and is focused solely on the shifting sands of the power dynamics between them. The script is savage without sacrificing poignancy, witty without ceasing to be genuine. And while I’ve seen some react to this film as a comedy (and it certainly has laughs, most of which are closely tied to shock), for me it was very clearly a drama about the inscrutable and complicated relationships that exist between women. Specifically, it is about how those relationships run the gamut from sincere affinity to ruthless manipulation. This is an amazing movie, and it also has the best use of an Elton John song in 2019 (sorry, Rocketman!).
2. Midsommar, dir. Ari Aster
I went into this film with reservations, since I wasn’t a huge fan of Hereditary (by the same director), which I found to have extraordinary moments but iffy execution overall. This movie, however, wowed me, and I am still uncertain as to whether this or The Favourite is my top film of 2019 so far (fortunately, this gives me a good excuse to watch Midsommar three or four times in cinemas). While marketed as a freaky cult horror film, the director has described it as a fairy tale, which is the level on which is spoke to me. Midsommar follows Dani (an incredible Florence Pugh), a young woman who has suffered a terrible loss, as she travels with her boyfriend and his friends to a pagan festival in the Swedish countryside. Dani is painfully isolated, and her grief is hers to shoulder alone since her boyfriend is un-receptive and distinctly unprepared to help her. Over the course of the film, destruction and creation are conflated in ways that are frequently beautiful and horrific at the same time - this film spoke to me on a profound level, and the way it ended gave me a sense of incredible catharsis. This won’t be for everyone, for I found it to be a deeply special film and I can’t recommend it enough.
3. One Cut of the Dead, dir. Shinichirou Ueda
While I went into The Favourite with high expectations given the talent involved, I went into this with no expectations whatsoever - and what a treat it was! One Cut of the Dead is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in ears, taking what initially seems like a trite concept (a crew is filming a zombie movie at a desolate location ... only to discover that the zombies are real!) and twisting it in a truly ingenious way. The comedy is often of the broad variety, but it is consistently delightful and always manages to avoid becoming crass - the movie even has some really sweet family dynamics at the centre of it, which gives it some real emotional heft. The success of this film is heavily reliant on a major twist that occurs part-way through, so the best advice I can give you is to stay as far away from spoilers for this one as possible - go in blind, and you will be amply rewarded for your faith.
4. The Farewell, dir. Lulu Wang
I saw this following a wave of festival hype, so while I was excited I was also a bit apprehensive (since I have been burned by the aforementioned festival hype before). Thankfully, my doubts were blown away as this turned out to be just as wonderful as the early reviews had suggested. It’s a personal story about a young Asian-American woman (Awkwafina) struggling to reconcile her heritage with her current situation and values - specifically, she is tested when her grandmother is diagnosed with terminal cancer and the wider family make the decision to hide the truth from her. The Farewell does a fantastic job of generating empathy for all the different perspectives and positions in play, but it’s truly anchored by Awkwafina’s amazingly nuanced and tender performance - basically, anyone who’s ever loved a grandparent should leave this feeling incredibly moved and inspired. The themes of The Farewell are both specific to the Asian-American experience and general to anyone who has struggled with maintaining bonds over a vast distance, whether physical or cultural.
5. Booksmart, dir. Olivia Wilde
God, how I wish I’d had this movie as a teenager! While Booksmart has a cliched premise - two high-achieving teens decide to have one wild night before graduation - it tells the story in an incredibly charming and impressively creative way (I won’t spoil it, but let me just say this - that scene with the Barbies!). As someone who was an awkward nerd with no discernible social life in high school (as you Americans call it), I found this portrayal of that peculiar limbo period very sensitive and thoughtful - it doesn’t mock or shame its heroines for being studious, and it allows them to have limits and step back from situations that make them uncomfortable. It also serves as a beautifully honest portrait of a friendship, depicting the qualities that bring people together in friendship together in the first place, as well as the forces that can break people apart. This is a very accomplished debut from Wilde, and it makes me very excited to see where she goes next as a director.
6. A Private War, dir. Matthew Heineman
This was a very suspenseful and tightly focused film about an extraordinary woman, and the film soars on the strength of Rosamund Pike’s incredible performance as Marie Colvin. She provides piercing insights into the psyche of a person so driven to pursue truth and enact change that she loses all concern for her own wellbeing - it’s simultaneously a portrait of heroism and obsession, and it’s impressive for how it handles the ambiguity inherent in Colvin’s choices. She’s exceptionally brave, but the film is unflinching in depicting the costs of her bravery. It left me feeling inspired to learn more about Colvin’s life and work, and I still need to watch the documentary Under the Wire to get more insight into the real story behind the film.
7. Fighting With My Family, dir. Stephen Merchant
This is the year of Florence Pugh - she killed it in Midsommar, and she is just as fantastic here. If anything, Fighting With My Family and Midsommar make great complements as they serve as fantastic showcases for Pugh’s range as an actor. While her character in Midsommar is fragile and vulnerable, Fighting With My Family is a platform for her strength and comedic skill. As Paige, Pugh is instantly likable and compelling - I don’t give a damn about any form of wrestling, but this film (and Pugh specifically) did a fantastic job of drawing me in and making me root for Paige’s struggle to prove herself as a legitimate force in wrestling. This is a real underdog story, and Pugh did a wonderful job as the Cinderella of the WWE.
8. Apollo 11, dir. Todd Douglas Miller
My dad has always been crazy about the space program, but I hadn’t picked up the bug myself. That changed after I watched this extraordinary documentary, which brought the Apollo 11 mission to vivid life. The footage that’s used for this documentary is extraordinarily crisp, and some moments are vividly powerful - the crew getting into their spacesuits, the swirl of fire surrounding the moment of takeoff, and the journey of the spacecraft towards the moon. It left me feeling moved and touched by human potential, especially when you remember that this all happened 50 years ago when the available technologies were so fragile and primitive. I also loved how the footage was allowed to speak for itself, with no voiceover or exposition - it’s a must-see for anyone who’s ever looked up at the stars and wondered about reaching them.
9. High Life, dir. Claire Denis
This movie is second to only Midsommar in terms of how weird it is. I saw this in a Hungarian cinema while on holiday, which made for a disorientating experience in itself. While the meaning of the film is quite elusive and I’m sure that many people will find viewing it a uniquely frustrating experience, I appreciated how it created a hothouse environment that brought out some of the ugliest aspects of humanity. Robert Pattinson was great as what comes closest to amounting to our protagonist, though he is as inscrutable and inaccessible as the film itself. I can’t quite pin down why I liked this one so much, but I know I did and it made me want to seek out more of Claire Denis’ work.
10. Free Solo, dir. Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
It’s tragic that most people will only watch this documentary on a TV screen (or, so much worse, a laptop!). I was fortunate enough to see it in its full IMAX glory, and it’s rare to see any film - let alone a documentary - take such full advantage of the format. The woozy spectacle of this film is the real star, though the subject - mountain climber Alex Honnold - is also fascinating with his unnerving detachment from the magnitude of what he is setting out on. It is clearly a necessary detachment for him to be able to achieve what he achieves, but I appreciated how the filmmakers questioned it and explored its impact on his girlfriend. This is a compelling documentary, and is worth watching even if you’re not usually a fan of the genre.

Love is not knowing
Part 1 Love is a lot of doubts
Part 2 Love is a lot of texts
A/N: Warning of part 3; smut
Preview
I leaned back and got comfortable and still we were not touching one another. We were closer than we have been before- there was no armrest between us anymore- but I didn’t want to be cliché and cover my eyes against his arm when a scary scene was coming so I just sat there and tried to be as less cliché as possible. He kept fidgeting so I looked up at him from my position on the couch.
“Are you comfortable? Do you want me to make some more room? Move to the side?”
“I was just trying to snuggle you but...” He raised his eyebrows and I grinned like an idiot.
I scooted closer to him and rested my head on his shoulder and with the movement the button of my skirt popped. The other side of the skirt was the one that was tied up on my hip so it still covered me but the other side was free as a bird.
“Oh shit” I whispered “my skirt just broke.”
“What do you mean it broke?”
“The button just popped.”
Without thinking I grabbed the fabric and get it out to show him but the other part, the one that was tied up on my hip, wasn’t big enough at all to cover my thighs so he ended up getting a good glimpse of my black lace underwear. I laughed because I had genuinely done that by accident and I was tipsy and it seemed funny to me and he chuckled too.
“Oops, I didn’t mean to show you my underwear.”
He chuckled.
“You’re just teasing me.” He said.
“Thank God we’re just friends.” I grinned at him.
I remember it took me no time to get ready, for I had known what I was going to wear for a week. I had wanted to get myself one of those skirts forever, the ones who are tied with a little bow on one of the hips making it look like a pareo; and when I saw it shopping with my mum I bought it without even trying it on.
I had been waiting for him for fifteen minutes when he finally arrived and he looked up at me from the beginning of the stairs and smiled and I remember how relief I was- because he had arrived just on time and that meant we wouldn’t have to go inside the movie theatre late which had always been so embarrassing for me- and how nervous I started feeling as well. It was the first time in my life I went to a date without making it explicit that it was before it happened. We never really talked about what it was but then again the fact that we were meeting alone with no other friends whatsoever to go to the movies kind of made it a date.
I remember Amy texting me right before he arrived “good luck babe” and “of course it is a date what else could it be?” and I remember I had smiled like an idiot to those texts. The thought of Harry didn’t even cross my mind once.
He made it up the stairs and I could tell he didn’t even know how to greet me so I just gave him a smile and started walking ahead.
“You almost didn’t make it.”
“There’s a building site on the road so there’s no access to the mall.” He explained. “I parked the car so far away you’re gonna laugh at me.”
I chuckled.
“I’m sorry. I always walk here so I didn’t the road was closed.”
He just nodded with a smile and followed me suit. It was weird, to have someone from the city center in my suburb, but it was also nice and I remember in that moment I kind of could see myself hanging out with him in my neighbourhood every once in a while. It was stupid really because I was going to Italy in a month so there was clearly not going to be a future between us but somehow in that moment I didn’t see that.
“You already got the tickets?” He raised his eyebrows.
“Otherwise we would have been late.”
“Oh, well, you let me know how much was it.”
I smiled at him and he started laughing.
“I owe you a lot of money.”
And with that we just make our way inside the movie theatre. I remember I liked the feeling I got when I gave the tickets to the cinema guy because it felt as if that guy would think we were a couple, because this was pretty much a date and we were laughing and blushing and staring at our feet, and I just loved that. I had never felt that before for I always went out with Cody and no offense but it didn’t get me excited that people would think we were together. I didn’t mind when they did but it just wasn’t something I would want anyway; yet with Luke it felt good because for as long as I had known him I always thought I wasn’t his type so the thought that someone else would think I was felt nice.
I guess that was the thing about me. Before Luke- even though now I can’t help but think it wasn’t actually Luke but Harry who had given me that boost of confidence- I had always attracted older guys’ attention but never really guys my age. I had had a woman’s body- not a girl’s but a woman’s- since I was about thirteen years old, so guys my age didn’t really even consider me as an option to date or whatever it is that teenagers do; so I had never had a high school romance or a teenage relationship and one part of me had always longed for that. Then with time I realized staying single all through high school and even after that through my first years of uni hadn’t been that bad at all. In fact, I felt like I knew myself better than most people did and, even if it’s bad of me to say it, I reckon I had reached that by asking myself so many times what was it that was so wrong about me not to attract guys’ attention. And then I realized there wasn’t anything wrong about me. It was just a general lack of confidence, of self-love even. It’s hard to be liked by others when you don’t even like yourself. And then I thought about it like this- this whole thing it’s just like an add: flirting, attracting people’s attention, being charismatic... It’s all about selling a product really. Nobody would sell a car without showing it, nobody who’s asshamed of their work would sell a painting and no one who’s not happy with one-self is going to make another person want them. But then the moment you do, the moment you look at yourself in the mirror and just go “well I don’t know what’s going on with that guy who isn’t paying attention to me because I’m rocking this, I’m hot as hell”; it’s just like everybody else starts thinking the same thing. It’s so strange and it doesn’t make much sense but really, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and sometimes in the words who’s speaking. I wish every girl in the planet would feel this way.
All throughout the movie we sat side by side, not touching each other at all, and I felt like it was inappropriate to lean my head on his shoulder or to reach out to him but he leaned in to whisper funny comments on my ear every once in a while. I enjoyed it; the whole thing, the movie, the cinema, his company; and then when it was time to go out, I was afraid our night was going to end.
We excitedly chatted all the way outside the movie theatre and I kept smiling like an idiot and he kept making jokes. I could tell he was comfortable and I was happy about it because after all the texts we had sent while he was in Germany, this was the first time we were hanging out together and some part of me was afraid we were going to end up having some awkward moments of silence or some weird feeling that we had run out of topics but so far it hadn’t been the case.
“So” He started “are you hungry?”
“Yeah.” I grinned like a kid on Christmas. He didn’t want the night to end either.
“Cool.” He smiled. “Well it’s your home, you tell me where to go.”
“Well there’s a pizza place here in the mall. Then there’s a kebab, a McDonalds just across the road, a Chinese restaurant, a traditional regular restaurant... And then... It’s probably too late to go there but we have the most famous homemade guacamole in town. Do you like guacamole?”
“Of course! Don’t trust people who say they don’t.”
I laughed at that.
“Well, if it’s too late to go there we’ll just have to go another time.” He smiled.
Oh boy, he knew what he was doing. I didn’t even care he would know how happy that kind of comment was making me so I let my grin ouverran my entire face.
“What do you feel like having?” He asked me.
“Pizza?” I suggested.
“Pizza it is.”
We both made our way inside the pizza place and once again I enjoyed the way the waiter was treating us. A table for two. And how he said “it’s quieter here” as if he was a partner on our date and he wanted to give us some privacy we hadn’t even asked for.
“Perfect” Luke smiled at him “thanks.”
He sat us down in such a small table I was afraid if we ordered two pizzas they wouldn’t quite fit but it was in a far corner, like in some sort of small inner patio where no one else was sitting, and it had a flower on a tiny jar right in the middle of the table. Luke chuckled when he saw it and I grinned at the coincidence. I can still remember perfectly fine how he looked in contrast with all the red perpendicular lines that decorated the walls and the cloths. It was a funny place, kind of wanting to look Italian but ending up looking kind of French, and I liked being there with him, with that flower in the middle.
My pizza arrived before his and I tried to wait for him to eat but he kept insisting.
“It’s gonna turn cold otherwise.” He shook his head. “And you’re like the slowest eater in the world, even if you start now I’ll finish mine before you do yours.”
“Okay well then don’t look at me while I eat. I’m gonna make a mess.”
Luke laughed out loud at that and I just blushed and smiled as I tried not to drop the mozzarella from the slice I had just grabbed.
“Well where do you want me to look at? It’s just us two!”
“Well just... Look at the flower I don’t know.” I shrugged.
“Alright”
He kept his eyes focused somewhere on the distance right next to me and I had a bite of the pizza not failing to notice how amused he seemed by my request.
“This is very awkward” he noticed “but funny so I’ll do it for the sake of humour. I’m guessing it’s gonna be me talking too since your mouth is full of cheese.”
“I meen” I tried to participate covering my mouth with my hand “I can agree with you with little hums and throat noises.”
“I would very much appreciate that you didn’t.”
I laughed out loud and he looked at me so I widened my eyes and he looked away in a second.
“Sorry.”
He started telling me about his family- about his parents’ name that I didn’t know- and about what they did (that now I can’t remember) and then he talked a bit about his childhood and about his teenage years and I loved that he would open up like that, telling me about his insecurities as a boy, while staring into the distance and I had pizza like the little pig I really am.
“Can’t I really look at you?” He chuckled. “Like, I mean, how bad can it be?”
He glanced at me for just a second and I know it wasn’t even enough for him to see anything. He was just doing it in the interest of humour so I just laughed when he spoke.
“Oh, okay, yeah, I get it.”
We agreed he could look at me once his pizza had arrived because then we were on an equal footing but he was so elegantly eating the pizza the little shit, bending the corners so it’d look like a crepe and then just having elegant bites without losing a single bit of tuna. I envied him.
“Where did you learn to eat pizza like that?”
“Not in the same place as you, that’s for sure.” He joked, his hazel eyes set on all the lost bits of cheese and cherry tomatoes that had been left on my plate.
“I’m a free bird.” I said before I had a sip of my beer. “I didn’t come into this world to be an elegant lady but to be a ridiculous one.”
“You’re funny.” He smiled. “I love that about you.”
I wish I had written this before when I still remembered it perfectly but all I have now is a note on my phone that I wrote the day before I left to Italy in an attempt to remember it all for I didn’t want a second of it to be lost in my memory. He made me feel so lightweight and I wish we could keep feelings on jars so that I could just open it and feel the same all over again but all I have now is the memory and a longing of seeing him after not having touch him in four months. I love Italy but I wish all my friends were here too.
After dinner he asked me what we could do then and I don’t remember how, but I know it wasn’t out of place, but at some point during dinner I had revealed that there was no one at my house. I don’t remember his reaction to that but I think he looked up from his pizza into my eyes and then I just smiled. Yeah, I think that’s what happened. But then, I’m not sure if he already knew I was staying home alone for that month since my mum was at my uncle’s with my little sister even though I hadn’t properly said it like that so it was never an invite. But now that I think about it, the fact that he was so keen to come all the way to the suburbs might have had something to do with the fact that we had a whole house to ourselves.
We walked to his car, even though we could have easily walked to my place, so that it would be closer for him to go home afterwards, and he kept telling me how it was probably so embarrassing that he had parked the car so far away.
“You probably think I’m such an idiot but this is not my neighbourhoor. I didn’t know where it was okay to park.”
“Just stop worrying.” I laughed. “I just got my license two months ago. I’d probably need a whole runway to park my little car so I’m in no position to judge you.”
He laughed at that.
“Actually I just wanted to take you to some dark place.” He smiled.
“You don’t need to take me anywhere dark.” I encouraged him.
He turned his head and smiled but then he chuckled and I rolled my eyes because it was making me desperate that he would dismiss me like that. I was not kidding.
I got on the passenger’s seat and that was the first of many times I got into his car that summer. Before he started the car, he got the key on the ignition and then he turned his head and smiled at me. I smiled back and posed because somehow I knew he was just taking in the image of me on his car.
“Alright.” He grinned. “Where to?”
“Just all straight. We have to get out of the building work.”
“Right.”
We got lost. Twice.
“I thought this was your neighbourhood?” He laughed.
“This building work is new and it’s blocking everything” I explained “but just relax, we’ll get out of here, eventually.”
“Do you even know where we are now?”
“Of course I know where we are now.” I calmly said. “Just keep driving straight and when I tell you you’ll take a turn to the right and then that should take us to the main road which is not closed and then all straight that’s my place.”
“Alright, you’re just the worst co-driver in planet Earth.”
I smiled.
“That’s the turn.”
He glanced at me as if saying “you sure?” and I nodded and then he took the turn to the right and we made it to the main road as I knew we would. Still, always in the interest of humour, I pretended to dry the sweat from my forehead as I puffed and he laughed out loud.
“You’re the worst.”
“You’re laughing a lot.” I pointed out.
“Cause I’m having fun.”
“That’s good.” I smiled.
“That is good, despite the company...”
I looked ahead through the windshield with the firm intention of ignoring his comment and he laughed at my antics, placing his hand on my knee for the first time since I had known him. I wanted to hold his hand in mine, intertwined our fingers and then rest our hands on my lap but I didn’t, instead I just tried to control my heartbeat as I gave him indications to take the right exit from the main road to my street.
“You’re so mean.” I spoke right as he stopped the car.
I thought that was a good moment for him to kiss me. He had parked the car right on the bulding in front of mine so he could just kiss me then and we didn’t even have to go to the bar like I had suggested before. But he just smiled.
“Why do you say that?”
“Because I keep making this so easy for you and you still just say mean things. I don’t know what you want.”
“Well you can’t know everything.”
“Well I know one thing: you’re terrible at making girls feel special.”
“I’m not” he shrugged “I’m just not trying.”
After that I opened the door of the car and got out. I wanted to scream at him for being so awkward. I wouldn’t give up and I quite frankly don’t know why now but I guess the fact that he had come all the way to my neighbourhood alone and that he had wanted to have dinner after the movie and that he had asked what to do afterwards as if he didn’t want to leave and he was comfortable being alone with me kind of gave me some confidence despite his words. Maybe he just wasn’t sure what he wanted either and that was why he was giving me mixed messages but I thought both of us knew what was going on between us.
I gave him a stern look when he glanced at me from the other side of the car and then he just started chuckling. The fucking bastard loved to make me look like an idiot.
“So this is your flat?”
He was looking at the wrong building.
“No” I smiled “it’s that one.”
I pointed at my flat and while he stared at it I walked around the car and got to the sidewalk walking in the other direction.
“Hey!” He jogged a little to catch up with me.
“The bar is the other way.”
He nodded and followed me. We talked about sport all the way to the bar for we both loved practicing sports and he knew about my frustrated athletics career and about my knee injury and as a physical therapis and a sportsman himself he seemed very interested about it. I loved being able to talk about it with someone who actually got it. Cody seemed to be allergic to sports so he didn’t quite understand why it had been so tough on me. “Why would you want to run anyway?” He always said if I ever saw him running I should run as well because probably he was being chased. We sat outside and I asked what he was going to have.
“I’ll have what you’re having.”
“You have to drive afterwards.” I noticed.
He nodded.
“I can have a beer though. I mean if I get drunk you’ll just have to wait with me until I’m not anymore.”
“Right, on that bench of the park” I pointed at one lonely bench with my head and he chuckled.
“For instance.” He smiled.
The waiter was a friend of mine or he had been. We had gone together to high school but I hadn’t seen him in forever. I didn’t usually go out in the suburbs do I didn’t even know he was working there but he seemed happy to see me and he didn’t let us pay. I got up and gave him a hug and I introduced Luke to him.
“So” Luke frowned as he left “who’s that guy?”
“He’s an old friend.” I shrugged. “I feel bad that he didn’t let us pay though because I know he used to have a crush on me and now he’s treating me to a beer with you.” I laughed.
He laughed as well.
“Thank God we’re just friends.” Luke said.
“Yeah, I know. Don’t worry, it’s already clear for me that we are nothing more than friends.” I rolled my eyes.
“Good.” He nodded his head and I hated his fucking smirk.
“You do know you suck at flirting, right?”
“I’m not flirting.” He smiled.
“I know” I lied “but I’d love to see you doing it. I’m sure you suck.”
“I don’t.”
“Well you did flirt with me when we met.”
“What?” He chuckled.
“Yeah, two years ago when we met. You were totally flirting with me.”
“I was not!”
“Oh, you were.” I laughed. “You would text me and sent memes to me and I actually have quite a few drunk voice mails from you complaining about how long it had been since we had seen each other” I drop my tone of voice a few octaves trying to make it sound lower like his and he grinned at my attempt “and I mean we weren’t even friends so you can’t just say that you were just being friendly.”
“Well, first of all I was just being friendly. You were Cody’s best friend so I wanted you to like me because Cody is also my friend.”
“That’s not a reason for you to want me to like you.”
“Of course it is.”
“Do you try to be liked by just everybody?”
“You are not just everybody”
“You’re flirting.” I shrugged.
He rolled his eyes and smiled and I had a sip from my bottle of beer. In that moment I was sure the night was going to end and he was going to go home and so was I and nothing was going to happen between us so I just kept smiling but I wasn’t going to try to be flirtly again. After all, Harry had also rejected me when I had made it clear in his car just three weeks earlier and I was not about to take another rejection- a timely retreat is a victory too. But I had another beer and so did he and my determination of not being flirty again fell down like a pile of leaves.
Somehow we ended up at my place. I don’t exactly remember how but I’m sure I suggested it for he would never invite himself up to my house. Oh boy I remember I had cleaned the entire house. I lost my mum’s sunglasses in the process. My house has always been such a mess- there are too many things and so little space- so really all I did was take everything that was out of place in the living room and placed it over my mum’s bed. The living room and the kitchen had never looked so tidy.
I showed him my room and he sat down on the bed and just smiled at me. Now I know I could have kissed him right there but in that moment I swear I still didn’t know whether he wanted me to or he really just saw me as a friend so after I showed him how my pink room looked like with the fairy lights on, I just made my way to the living room and turned the TV on.
“You wanna watch a movie?”
Another one. Nice.
“Sure.” He shrugged. “A scary movie.”
“No, not a scary movie.”
“Why not?” He smiled. “You’re afraid?”
“As a matter of fact I am. I mean not during the movie but then I can’t sleep. We can only watch a scary movie if you stay the night.”
I actually meant it. Of course I wanted him to stay the night- I had wanted to kiss him for two years- but it was actually true, I couldn’t sleep if I watched a scary movie. I have never been able to sleep after a scary movie. Even thinking about them keeps me up- I might not sleep tonight. I just have a very imaginative mind and my nightmares are very powerful and more frequent that I’d like them. So when I said that was the only way that I would watch a scary movie. I meant it. It was close to 2 am anyway.
“Do you want me to stay?”
“Yeah.” I smiled. “Will you?”
A month prior I would have never thought I’d have him sleeping over at my house.
“Well I... I haven’t told my mum I wasn’t going to sleep at home but... What time is it again?”
“It’s 1:45 am.”
He looked down at his phone. One part of me wanted to think it was only an excuse because after all we were 22 years old- well I was 21 at the time- but we still lived at home with mum and dad for we lived in the city and didn’t need to move for uni so it wasn’t actually that crazy.
“I’ll send her a text and if she answers I’ll stay.” He reasoned.
“I hope she answers then.”
“So do I.” He smiled.
We just stared at one another and I remembered all that confidence had come with alcohol really so I thought I’d have a beer before I sobered up.
“I’m gonna have a beer. I’ll get some water until you know if you’re staying or not.”
“Thanks.” He smiled.
I went to the kitchen and grabbed myself a can of beer. I was so happy my mum was such a heavy drinker- I’m kidding, she doesn’t drink that much but she does like her beer and I had just come back with my beer and his water when he grinned.
“She replied, I’m staying.”
“Want a beer then?”
“Yes, please.”
We sat down side by side on my couch and I let him go through Netflix searching for a scary movie to watch. He wanted to watch It because the second movie was about to go out and he wanted to go watch it but haven’t watched the first.
“Wait, you want me to watch Stephen King?” I panicked. “I told you I’m afraid of scary movies and you want me to watch Stephen King, who’s probably the scariest guy ever.”
He laughed.
“There’s no It in Netflix anyway so let’s watch some other.”
He scrolled through the movies for less than a minute before he handed me the control.
“Actually, you choose. You’re the one who’s picky.”
“I’m not picky.” I complaint as I scrolled through them. “I’m just impressionable. Have you watched Mama?”
I had seen that movie, even though I didn’t remember it pretty well, but it was safer to watch a movie I had already seen than watching a new scary movie at the risk of getting traumatized forever.
“I haven’t, have you?”
“I don’t know. It sounds familiar to me but I don’t remember what it is about so maybe my mind just erased it in order to protect me or maybe it just sounds familiar to me because it’s famous.”
“In order to protect you” he mocked “okay, let’s watch that one then.”
There, I felt like a queen throwing that back at his face in that moment and I was happy with the way he threw his head back and just started laughing.
“Fair enough.” He laughed. “I actually deserved that.”
I shut my legs tight and covered myself with a pillow and then I fully rested against him and we watched the rest of the movie. I would hold my head up every time he’d lean towards the table to grab his beer so I could lay it back again agaisnt his arm when he rested his back on the couch. He kept chuckling whenever I would yelp and we would comment the movie and it just felt nice to have that moment with him and somehow I felt as if we had done that so many times before- just watching movies together snuggling on the couch. I could definitely get used to that.
When the movie ended it was past three in the morning but I wasn’t even sleepy. I guess I was still excited and I was happy that everything had gone so well so far. I sighed and silently enjoyed his presence for a few seconds.
“You see now is when it gets scary for me so if you scare me I swear to God I’ll kill you.”
He laughed.
“No, I wouldn’t do that. I saw it was actually scary to you.”
“That’s right so if you want anything from the kitchen, you go. I’m not going in the dark alone.”
“Well, there’s nothing I want that’s on the kitchen anyway.”
I smiled but he didn’t see it. Of course I got what he meant but I wanted to give him as much of a hard time as he had given me before. I had made it pretty clear that I liked him so if he wanted something from me, he just had to lean down and kiss me.
“You didn’t get it, did you?”
I laughed out loud. His voice came out in some sort of whisper and it was the cutest thing I had ever heard. I wanted to push him against the couch and straddle him and kiss him until my mouth was dry but he had said so many stupid things that night I wasn’t even sure if he wanted me to do that or if instead he was going to turn his head at me so instead I just got out from the couch, turn on all the lights and made my way to my room.
“I’m gonna change into my pyjamas.”
I left the door opened while I changed because he couldn’t see me from the living room anyway and I was actually still a little afraid after the movie and I put on the shortest shorts that had ever been made- they were practically underwear leaving a good part of my bum exposed- and I kept my black lace bra under my white cottom short sleeves t-shirt. He looked me up and down from his seat on the couch when I came back to the living room. I loved the feeling I got when his eyes ran down my bare legs and then he bored them into mine. His jaw was slightly clenched.
“So” I smiled knowingly “there’s no one home so you can choose any bed you’d like.”
“But I want to sleep in yours.” He stated. “With you.”
I let the smile overtake my lips as I nodded.
“Okay.”
I got closer to him and the couch and since he was sitting down his head what at sight level with my belly. If only he reached up his hands he could trace the back of my thighs and I would straddle him, but he didn’t. He had his phone on his hand but his eyes had been set on me since I had stepped a foot in the room.
“So what do you want to do now?” I whispered.
“I want you.”
I was surprised by the energy inside of me, an impulse that was encouraging me to push my legs across his lap and straddle him so he could grab my bum and pull me closer. Man I was dying for him to touch me like that but I was so nervous. I swallowed before I smiled at him.
“Let’s go to bed.”
I walked ahead of him and I knew he could see half my bum out of my shorts but in that moment I wanted him to. I was feeling confident and sexy and I wanted him to see me and to want me like I did him. I lied on the bed and watched him get his wallet out of his back pocket and leaving it on my desk. He left his phone there too.
“You can take off your jeans.” I told him. “You can sleep in your underpants.”
“Really? You don’t mind?”
“Not at all” I shook my head “sleeping in your jeans must be so uncomfortable.”
“Yeah, thanks.”
He took off his jeans and carefully folded them, placing them on the back of the chair at my desk, and then he just lied down next to me. We were both staring at the ceiling, lying down on the bed next to one another and no one was touching the other or even facing each other. It literally looked like we were on some American teenage rom com so I started laughing.
“You know you’re the first guy I share this bed with?”
He’s still the only one.
“Really?” He smiled.
I nodded.
“We might go down to history as the first two straight people who share a bed for no reason in a house alone and do nothing.” I pointed out.
“We might.” He shrugged next to me.
I was grinning because the whole thing was beyond funny to me but I still had no clue of what was going on, whether he liked me or not, whether he wanted to do something or not. I didn’t understand a thing so I started mindlessly playing with the knot of my shorts, as I always do when I’m thinking- I always keep my hands busy.
“Is that an invitation?” Only when he said that I realized I had actually untied my shorts and also, that he had been watching my hands playing with the knot. “Undoing your belt...”
“No” I grinned “look, I’ll tie the bow again so you can undo it.”
I turned my head and grinned at him and he just stared at me, a smile fixed on his face, but then again he had had that expression for hours. We had a bit of a staring contest but both of us were smiling and I wanted to kiss him.
“I don’t understand anything.” I confessed.
“About what?”
“About you!” I frowned. “About this.”
He just stayed quiet, encouraging me to explain myself so I look back to the ceiling.
“I mean when I asked you if you were playing dumb or if you just were dumb I was asking you if you had realized I was flirting with you and just dismissing it or if you just really didn’t know I liked you.”
“Yeah well of course I had realized!” He turned his body sideways so he was fully facing me. “I just... I don’t know what you want.”
“You don’t know what I want?”
“I mean... I do know you want something to happen between us.” Thank God. “But before that happens, I just want you to know that I don’t have feelings for you.”
I don’t think that hurt me, not even in that moment. I just remember I said “alright” and then I just stayed quiet but I wasn’t mad, I wasn’t hurt; I guess I just took those seconds because I finally understood. I was going to Italy on a month after that anyway so it wasn’t like I was expecting him to fall in love with me or anything and really I guess I just wanted to kiss him, like I had wanted since I met him.
“That doesn’t mean I don’t feel attracted to you though and of course it doesn’t mean I don’t want to have sex with you.” He explained. “But it’s important for me that you know perfectly well where my feelings stand because I wouldn’t want to like mess up our friendship, much less hurt you in any way so... I mean I can do the friends with benefits thing perfectly fine. I don’t know how you feel about that.”
He granted me a moment of silence and I was so grateful, not only for the moment to myself and my thoughts but also for his honesty and how clear he had spelled out his thoughts. I thought in that moment that was all I wanted in my life, for someone to speak out their mind like that and not be afraid of just being open and to have things that clear, that spoken out, that clean.
I still didn’t look at him. He had pretty much left everything on my hands and now my next move was important. I swallowed. The only thing I knew was I wasn’t going to lie to him so I decided I’d do the same thing he had just done and maybe together we could decide what was wiser.
“Okay.” I started and he licked his lips, ready to listen to me. “Well first of all, thank you for your clarity.”
He raised his eyebrows and tilted his head as if dismissing my gratitude but I still felt very grateful for that.
“And I want to give you the same so I won’t lie to you. I do like you, like I do have feelings for you. However,” He nodded. I guess he could work with that. “That doesn’t mean I want a relationship or anything. I mean after all I’m going to Italy in a month and I wouldn’t want to go on my year abroad on like a brand new relationship so... And I mean I’m not jealous, like at all, so that means despite me having feelings for you, uh, you could like, be with whoever you want I really wouldn’t mind that so... Uh, right now I’m just thinking.”
“Okay.” He chuckled. “You can think.”
“Thanks.” I chuckled too.
We stayed like that for I don’t know how long until I made up my mind and then I just turned my head against the pillow so I was facing him.
“What I like about this is that we just talked about how we feel and like all the cards are on the table and still it doesn’t feel awkward, does it?”
“Yeah, I know, you’re right. I was thinking the same thing.”
“Isn’t it nice? I mean I’m very... Comfortable here, like... I don’t feel any tension or anything.”
“Right.”
“But” I raised my eyebrows at him “now that you have made everything clear I do have to tell you, man, you’re terrible at flirting.” I confessed, making him laugh. “Like for real you had me completely fool like saying you were not trying to make me feel special, that you were not flirting with me like what was that?”
“Well” he chuckled “I don’t know. Actually on the car? When I said I wasn’t trying and you just got out of the car I actually thought to myself gosh you’re an idiot and like I could tell I was messing up but I just couldn’t stop.”
I threw my head back and laughed out loud at his comment.
“But I mean” he said “it was pretty clear anyway like I did come all the way here just to watch The Lion King” he frowned.
“It was a great movie.” I defended and he chuckled.
“Yeah, sure, but” he lifted his palms to the ceiling as if saying but come one and I laughed at his confessions.
I liked that he would just tell me these things. I shook my head and stared at the ceiling again. For the first time that night I wasn’t nervous anymore.
“And then you put on those fucking shorts which are pretty much undies and... I mean you looked so good tonight with that fucking see-through top... You gotta understand.”
I grinned at him. I looked down at his lips. Come on, come on. He just had to lean like five centimeters and his lips would be on mine. Come on! I didn’t say anything further but just stared at him and I saw his eyes roaming my body. I intensified my breathing. Come on, just fucking kiss me already.
I got even closer to him until I could feel his breath on my cheek and he delicately brought his hand to my hip and held me in place so that I wouldn’t move. I smiled. He wasn’t going to kiss me.
“Come on.” He whispered.
I almost rolled my eyes. We were both waiting for the same thing.
“You come on.” I whispered back.
He pressed a kiss to my cheek and even if it had been just a long peck and it wasn’t the first time he pecked my cheek, it was the first time he did it like that. I can’t even say what went through my mind in that moment but like that I just held his hand on mine, turn around and pressed my back against his chest, my bum on his lap and I said:
“Okay, let’s spoon.”
He just held me. He moved his hand until he was wrapping my waist and then he held me close to him. I could feel his breathing on the back of my ear and it was so quiet I could listen to it too. I was afraid of making a sound that would break the atmosphere and then in that moment I felt such a heavy weight falling on top of us, as if someone had just thrown an iron blanket over us two. Every little movement of his fingers against the skin of my belly was magnified. It was as if he was touching my entire body just by moving his finger a tiny milimeter and the way he smelled and how warm he was... I had never felt more tensed in my entire life. I brought my knees closer to my belly and mindlessly press my bum against him. My breathing caught on my throat when I felt his arousal.
“Well now I just have to put up with this.” He said.
“Okay now I can feel the tension.” I confessed.
I turned my head so I was facing the ceiling once again and he lifted his from the pillow. His hands caressed my waist as I turned my body so I was facing him and then we were the closest we had ever been and his hands were already on my warm skin under my t-shirt.
“Just kiss me.” I begged.
“I already kissed you on the cheek, the next step is yours. That’s how it goes.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes, I want you to be the one who starts this.” He smiled.
I had never felt more powerful in all my life and deep down I knew he wanted that just to feel in some way upper, kind of premium, but to be honest I didn’t even mind. I was fed up with that thing that guys had to hit on girls and it couldn’t be the other way around and I was glad he had been that honest with me and that he was giving me this opportunity of breaking the stereotype and the standard set. I could have easily just turned around again and keep torturing him with my body against his and I knew that would have worked and he would have given up and kiss me himself but I was desperate to kiss him too so instead I just pressed my lips against his and his response didn’t take a split of a second.
The moment I pressed my lips against his he was kissing me back and he even moaned against my mouth and he pushed me against the mattress and hovered above me and I had never felt more wanted. His excitement was evident as it pressed against my thigh and I devoured his mouth like a hungry cub getting fed for the first time and enjoyed the sounds he made, the groans, the sighs, the growls.
Those were all things I had read about a lot, I had also written about them, but I had only had sex once, despite what all my friends thought, and somehow even though I probably should have felt nervous or shy or novice; maybe it was the way he sounded or the desperation in the way he grabbed my body and his tongue pushed against mine; but I felt so sexy, so confident on my own skin.
I was still wearing my pyjamas and he still had his t-shirt and his boxers on but we were just kissing for I don’t know how long, just letting the other discover our own mouths and letting our own tongues discover the taste of the other. Oh God he was such a good kisser... Up to this day I haven’t yet met a better kisser. I loved how it felt- his wet mouth, his full lips, his angry tongue claiming mine, his breath dying on my throat...
His hands were all over my body but I could tell he was still timid because they would caress my breasts but he wouldn’t dare to grab them even though I knew he wanted to for they would keep coming back to my chest and every time he’d dare a little more pressure. I was dying for him to make me his in as many ways as possible, but I was also enjoying the discovery, the shyness and my writer’s mind was romanticizing everything but it was also making me realize that that was the first and the last time it was going to be the first time for the next time- if there was even going to be another- he wouldn’t be this self-conscious- he would know what he could do and what not then- and it wouldn’t feel so new so I had to enjoy that and let my body notice that with every caress of hiss.
His hands then slipped under the hem of my t-shirt and he just ran them across my skin as if he was straightening it. I felt like I was made of sand and he was sculpting me, very carefully and with a lot of caution. I was a moaning mess on his mouth. My hands had been under his t-shirt for quite some time now and I had been silently enjoying the way his muscles felt under my fingertips- I could feel them all- the trapezius, the deltoides, the latissimus dorsi- and they were all moving in sync as he slowly and I’m sure mindlessly thrusted his hips against mine. My legs were wide opened for him so I could feel him rock hard against my entrance and I caressed his back bringing his t-shirt up until he lifted his arms for me to take it off.
My plan worked because then he grabbed the hem of my t-shirt and pulled it over my chest, pulling back from our kiss to admire my chest from the distance his back allowed. His eyes moved frantically along my skin before he looked up at my face and I remember I felt funny when I saw his lips for they were swollen and red and it was all my doing. I felt like a naughty girl.
With a confidence I didn’t know I had, I started moving my own hips against his and I took very care in watching his every expression. His brows went closer for a second in a fleeting frown and his lips parted and he just held his weight over me as I moved my hips in circles feeling his arousal pressing against my hot skin. I brought my hand to his cheek, pulling his face closer to me so I could kiss him.
“I’m so hard for you.”
I smiled against his mouth. Once again I felt like he had read one of those texts I had read so many times where the guy would say that and he was just saying all those things and acting like that just to please me for I had always thought those were the kind of things girls write about and romanticize but never actually happened and it made me feel so good to be wrong about that. I felt like I was living what so many other people had written about.
“This is not fair. I’m here on my underwear and you still have these fucking shorts, even though they’re like undies... But take them off. I want you in your underwear.”
I gave myself a mental high five for choosing matching underwear that night and I lifted my hips from the mattress, allowing him to bring my shorts to my ankles before I kicked them off. He chuckled and shook his head when he saw my matching underwear and once again I brought his mouth closer to mine so he would kiss me again like he had done before.
We started a perfectly synchronised dance, twirling our hips so that they would find and then hide from one another and in that moment I swore I could have lived from his moans alone. I remember I just wanted that moment to last forever and despite the heat that our bodies were creating- sweat was starting to creep at the back of my neck- I remember I thought I wanted time to freeze so that I would always feel like that and nothing but him would ever touch me again.
When I thought I couldn’t feel any better than I was feeling at the moment, his hand travelled from my waist up to my chest and he finally dared to cup my breast and gently squeezed it on his hand. I moaned out loud and he groaned and I could only figure he wasn’t controlling his throat either. His hand then pressed against my stomach as he thrusted hard against my hips and I pulled my mouth back from his so I could get a deep breath of air in my lungs because I was feeling all wet, even my lungs were feeling wet, and I was afraid I was going to suffocate. He started kissing my neck then and his fingers moved down to my core and he ran his four fingers up my lace covered folds, his thub resting against my inner thigh. I thought I was going crazy. He then started pressing firm but slow circles against my clit as he kissed the skin of my neck and his tongue timidly traced my jaw line.
I couldn’t do anything but moan, couldn’t even control my eyelids, and I felt as if I was about to go somewhere very far away and not come back for the next few hours. I swear I wasn’t even feeling the mattress anymore and then I listened to the elastic of my undies as he grabbed it and slipped his fingers underneath and then I felt his warm fingers collecting some of the wetness before he slipped them inside me and I wanted to scream out loud so that I could get some of the heavy tension I was feeling all the way from my belly to my chest out of my body. And yet despite the heavy tension that was pulling my chest down and making it hard to breathe, at the sime time I felt as if I wasn’t one pound heavy, as if I was not even there, and it was the first time in my life I felt a total disconnection between my body and something else, and I was very aware of everything- of his thumb moving against my center, two of his fingers going in and out, of all the blood running in my veins and going to that one bundle of nerves that was growing and swelling and my head spinning around; but at the same time it all felt like it wasn’t mine and I felt myself at the edge of becoming undone.
“Do you have a condom?”
I whispered against his mouth for I didn’t have one despite it being my home because as I said I had only had sex once and it had been more than a year prior; but I wanted to feel him. I was so desperate to have him inside of me and to feel my walls stretching as he made his way inside me and claim my body his.
“Yes.” He whispered back. “Do you want me to get it?”
“Yeah.”
I didn’t have to say it twice. He just got up, grabbed his wallet and in a second he was back on top of me with the little tin fold grasped between his fingers and he pressed his lips against mine, brushing my hair away from my face with his palm.
“Are you sure?” He whispered again.
“Yes.”
With my verbal confirmation he sat down on the side of the bed and gave me his back as he rolled the condom. I didn’t look because I wanted to give him some privacy, the way he had done it, turning from me, kind of made me think he was a bit nervous about it and I didn’t want to make it harder for him so I respected his privacy. I don’t remember how Jack, the other guy I had had sex with, had done it but now that I think about it I don’t think I had seen him rolling the condom on either. I was just glad he hadn’t asked me to put it on because I have no idea how to do it- I don’t even know what a condom looks like when it’s not on a dick if I’m honest.
He hovered over me and kissed me when he was ready but he didn’t get inside me yet and I was about to pull from his hair hard until he fucking thrusted inside me because I swear I couldn’t take it anymore but instead he just rested both hands on the sides of my head and then he pulled back and pecked my cheek and then the angle of my jaw and then my pulse and my collarbone and finally he wrapped his mouth around my nipple and lightly sucked and my back arched so my spine lifted from the mattress and as a result I was pressing my breasts further against his face. With one of his hands he cupped and squeezed my other breasts as he licked and sucked the other and I kept thrusting my hips against his, hugging the lowest part of his back with my ankles and pressing my heels on the soft dimples of his back.
I remember I started feeling my own skin so soft but somewhat heavy and I remember how much I liked the contrast with his for he was so much paler than I was because it was the middle of summer so I was very tanned and he was also somewhat colder than me. I ran my hands down his back and noticed the thin layer of sweat that covered his skin and before I could think of anything his mouth was back on mine and he brought his hand down and grabbed his arousal.
The next thing I remember is how I felt as if all the nerves in my body where forming a circular web and the center was right between my legs and then the nerves extended themselves all the way down my legs till the tip of my very toes and all the way up my stomach and to my arms and my neck and then he was pushing the exact center of it with every thrust so I felt like all my nerves were being pulled and released, pulled and released and I was afraid my skin was going to break and all those nerves were going to be exposed and then I’d feel like I was more than naked and we would both burn into flames for I could literally feel the electricity, every connection, every time he thrusted inside me.
He started slowly but I don’t remember I needed much time to adjust to his size and it was only when I changed the position of my hips, granted him with a new angle, when he sped up the rhythmn; and the entire time he had been sloppily kissing me and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
“I don’t think I’m gonna last long” he excused himself against my mouth “I’m so fucking turned on... And, my God, you feel so good.”
I pushed my tongue inside his mouth, wanting him to shut up, and I wished I could form coherent sentences to ask him to just listen to the way our skins sounded together, to our weight pushing down the mattress with every thrust. I wanted him to listen to our rhythmn as I was listening to it. One, two, three... I thought it was the most relaxing sound in the world. I also wanted to tell him how good he was making me feel, how fucking amazing he was at this and how I wished my channel would be velvety so he felt as welcome as he was inside me; but all I could do was kiss him and let my throat whimp.
“Oh God!”
My mind went from black to all kind of colours and I swore I was seeing the entire galaxy behind my eyelids when he started thrusting the fastest he could muster in and out of me until all of a sudden he stopped.
“Oh, no, don’t stop!”
“Yeah I don’t want to stop either but if I don’t I’m cumming.” He pressed a kiss to my lips, surely trying not to make them purse. “And I want this to last.”
He smiled as he kissed me again and I chuckle against his mouth, playfully pushing his tongue with mine, and allowing him to calm down as he kissed me.
“You’re so soft, Anna.” He whispered before he licked a stripe on my neck. “And so warm. You’re driving me crazy.”
“Jesus Christ.” I sighed. “You feel amazing.”
He grinned at me as he resumed the movements of his hips and despite his attempt of calming down so it would last longer, his hands moved down to my ass and he squeezed it as he pressed me against him, thrusting fast and deep inside me and moaning against my neck until we both reached it together.
I was out for a second or two and when my conscience came back, I felt him completely resting on top of me like a dead weight. With the little strenght I had left I brought one of my hands to his hair and caressed his skull as I hugged him close to my chest and I felt him fighting for the control of his breathing for a minute or two.
“Fuck.”
He lifted his head from my chest when he had gained some composure back and he gave me a toothy grin before he leaned down and pressed his lips against mine. He kissed me slowly, lifting some weight from my body.
“Did you cum?” He worried.
“Yeah.” I pecked his lips. “You know, it was the first time I came at the same time.”
“We came together?”
He grinned and I nodded pushing his curly hair back from his face and kissing him again.
“Yeah. You really didn’t notice?” I chuckled.
“I noticed it on my hand before but not this one. Sorry I was so gone.” He chuckled. “That was crazy.”
I chuckled until he kissed me again.
“I need to go to the toilet.” He said.
“Okay.”
With that he got up and went to the toilet, I guess to freshen up, but I still needed a moment for my blood to reach my legs again so I just laid there for a couple more minutes before I got up and went to the other bathroom to clean up.
I came back before he did so I was already lying in bed in fresh underwear when he arrived. He put on his boxers and lie down next to me. I didn’t know what to do next because I hadn’t had a friend with benefits before so I didn’t know if after fucking you just acted as if nothing had happened or if you were allowed to cuddle with them so I just lie there like a dead person and wait for him to show me what was supposed to happen next.
He searched for my mouth and pressed some innocent kisses against my lips and then he hugged me and caressed my skin, pressing soft kisses on my shoulder or my arm or anywhere his lips would reach so I caressed his arm as he draw figures on my bare skin. I was happy he was affectionate and it almost felt as if that moment of intimacy, the cuddle after the sex, was better than the sex itself.

Okada Junichi x Yamada Ryosuke (Cinema * Cinema 86)
Cross-talk
The bond between Hijikata Toshizo and Okita Souji that was cultivated naturally
Okada: I feel like it is sort of like fate that I get to play Hijikata Toshizo. I can't explain it well, but I always thought it would be a role that I would play. When we were filming, it felt like the [character] was looking at me.
Yamada: On the contrary, I was not familiar with the history at all. I also had to learn about the Shinsengumi from scratch. It was my first time participating in an authentic historical drama, so everything on set, including sword fighting, was new to me.
Okada: But Yamada-kun is a once-in-a-millennium talent. Your sword fighting was really perfect.
Yamada: (Tongue tied) I'm happy [to hear that] ...
Okada: Before we started shooting, he said to me, "Please teach me all the things I don't know." We would rehearse together and explore ways on how he could show an Okita-like fighting style. That said, Yamada-kun could do it right away. That's [why you are] a once-in-a-millennium talent. Did you enjoy your practice?
Yamada: Very much.
Okada: [The training] included wrestling. You must have wondered, "Why wrestling?" (Laughs)
Yamada: At first (laughs). [That’s because] you need to use your waist when you swing the sword, right?
Okada: Yeah. Including the approach, he learned things really quickly.
Yamada: I think there are many actors who want to play Okita Souji. Moreover, Okada-san is Hijikata. However, I would hate for people to think "I'm [only selected for the role] because I'm his kouhai." That's why I want to play [the character] properly. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the ability [to do it on my own]. So facing that [problem], if I could ask for help, there was no reason for me not to. But it was not just me [who asked for help]. All members of the Shinsengumi called Okada-san "Teacher!" (Laughs)
Okada: I had the opportunity to choreograph sword fighting scenes in which I was involved. Every time someone finished a sword fight, everyone would look at me as if they were asking "How was it?" (Laughs)
Yamada: We did look.
Okada: Right. That kind of atmosphere sometimes made me feel like Hijikata. Suzuki Ryohei (who played Kondo Isami) was also very good at mood making on set and just like the director of the Shinsengumi, he brought everyone together. In that setting, the relationship between Hijikata and Okita also became apparent.
Yamada: It worked well.
Okada: Yeah. I feel that we were able to play that naturally. We never talked about "Let's do this!" It just worked (laughs).
Yamada: Perhaps because you are a senpai who I already know... But on the other hand, you are my actual senpai, right? Nevertheless, [my character] in the movie was cheeky and I poked Okada-san. That definitely wasn’t something I could do normally.
Okada: Ah ha ha.
Yamada: However, I was surprisingly not nervous when I did it. Since Okita would surely do this.
Okada: The relationship between Hijikata and Okita was like that of sworn brothers. Although the members of the Shinsengumi might be like that too, but among them, Hijikata, Kondo and Okita had the deepest ties. I think women like that sort of relationship.
Yamada: That’s true...
Okada: I asked myself “Why is the Shinsengumi so beloved throughout the times?”, after all, it is an important point. They did cruel things and although objectively speaking, you can’t understand them sometimes, there was a trust that existed among these men. There was a bond between them, right? In a sense, this connection transcends life and death.
Yamada: Okita really liked Hijikata-san and Kondo-san. Whether it was during his childhood in his hometown or after he joined the Shinsengumi, Okita's feelings [towards them] had not changed at all. Although there was a hierarchy and discipline [in the group], they didn't matter. He had always thought that, "I like Hijikata-san and Kondo-san, so I'm in the Shinsengumi." That's why I wanted to cherish that feeling when I was performing.
Okada: After all, movies that depict human [relationships] are good. Hijikata, Kondo and Okita were historical figures. That's why it was easy for us to play them and we were able to emphasize the connection between these characters. No matter how much Hijikata was feared at that time, the connection between these friends remained the core. Hijikata once said "the purpose of a man’s life is to create beauty" and that represented what he held dear to his heart. Although things were cruel, there was beauty within them. As you see the [story of] the people and the era unfold on screen, it will be nice if this idea is reflected as well.
Yamada went through extreme weight-loss under the guidance of Mr. Okada
Okada: Yamada-kun is cute no matter what. When I watched him working hard, I loved him more and more. Because (of the role), he had lost 8kg, you know. It must have been hard.
Yamada: Yes ... (laughs).
Okada: Suzuki-kun and I are familiar with that (laughs). When he consulted me [on weight-loss methods], I casually said, "You should try dehydration." It was a hellish method that I don't want to do again, but it is very effective if you need to do it quickly. Yamada-kun really did it. It was hard, right?
Yamada: That was really something...
Okada: You often had to act in that condition. Time passed slower and your movements also became more [laboured]. Although that annoyance... was brewing, you didn’t say it out loud (laughs).
Yamada: Was it brewing? Honestly, on the last day [of the extreme diet period], I thought “it might be good to die” (laughs), but the day after “my” death, I had to film sword fighting [scenes].
Okada: You muttered, "I have sword fighting on this day", I thought you must be concerned (laughs).
Yamada: “What should I do?” I thought and panicked. However, I thought Okada-san and others have experience in [losing weight in a short period of time] and they taught me a lot. Okada-san and Suzuki-san were so detailed that I almost asked, “Are you doctors?”
Okada: I said "Do OO and OO!"
Yamada: "Huh?", I asked as I took notes to research later. However, if I were doing this alone without any knowledge, I might have used some dangerous methods [to lose weight]. Instead, I was able to trim down to the goal weight correctly.
Okada: That was cute. Quietly~ eating almonds while conserving energy (laughs). You were very endearing that way.
Yamada: But when I was filming my “weak” scenes, I was scolded a little by Director Harada (Masato).
Okada: Is that so?
Yamada: I was taking too much time between movements.
Okada: You couldn’t move right (laughs)? I don't think people who have not experienced it would understand. But I like that scene. Hijikata laid down next to Okita, who was suffering from tuberculosis, and said, "I'm going to sleep here today." It showed their relationship. Although it would not come out of his mouth, I think Hijikata felt calm being next to Okita.
Yamada: That's right. For Okita, I think Okita was very lonely. Both the Shinsengumi and Hijikata-san were steadily changing. But when Hijikata-san was in front of the sick “me’, he turned back to the old Hijikata-san and snuggled up to him. He showed “me” a side of himself that he never let others see, and “I” liked it. However, when we were filming the scene, I was just not able to move... that night, when I went to the sauna by myself to reflect [on the mistake], Okada-san also came to the sauna.
Okada: I remember that. But you weren’t scolded [by the director] so much to be worried though. That was just like Yamada-kun.
Yamada: Hm~...
Okada: As expected, a once-in-a-millennium talent will be a perfectionist. Although that's fine.
Yamada: I'm really glad you said that. I'm glad we were able to act together and get closer.
Okada: Hm~.
Yamada: Eh?! We did not get closer?
Okada: Nah, we weren’t that distant to begin with. Well, if we compare [our relationship now] to when we were rehearsing before the shoot, I think we have gotten closer. Yamada-kun gave me the most delicious strawberries I’ve ever eaten.
Yamada: Is that so?! But I'm glad you liked them (laughs).
The movie scenes and lines that left an impression
Okada: In "Joker", the cut when Joker raised his chin and looked up to the sky was memorable. The lighting was exquisite. I wanted to know the behind-the-scenes scoop for that scene. It was really amazing that the lead actor could push the momentum forward in the movie with just that. He acted like he was invincible. I think it may be an eternal theme for people in the movie business, it is jam packed with the hopes of the actor who wanted to become that*.
*I’m not entirely sure if I interpreted this correctly, but it’s kind of the filler part of the cross-talk anyway, so I am not too concerned about it.
Yamada: The last scene of "Romeo & Juliet". Juliet revived and looked at Romeo with a smile, but Romeo just drank poison. I cannot forget the surprised face of (Leonardo) DiCaprio when he realized that Juliet was alive. He was in pain and then just died... Couldn’t he wait another 20 seconds?! (Laughs) This is my favorite movie.
Hijikata & Okita
Okada Junichi
Memorable scene: Okita looking outside grabbed my heart
When the increasingly sick Okita looked at the [view] outside from his room with a hollow expression, the cut was beautiful. The trailer included that scene but when I watched it as part of the finished movie, it definitely left an impression. I saw up close the hard work Yamada-kun himself put in. Since he asked me for advice on how he should [show Okita] using the sandanzuki (the 3 stage thrust, Okita’s special move) while he was ill, I knew about the scenes he was filming. I didn’t actually see the filming of the scene where he was vacantly staring outside and fading away quietly. I saw it for the first time in the final cut of the movie and it grabbed my heart.
Message from Senpai to Kouhai: The image of Yamada-kun doing his best made me cry (laughs)
Yamada-kun is very smart. A good guy. That’s why I think you can indulge yourself a bit. However, you are not in a position to be indulgent, so you won’t do that and that is Yamada-kun [in a nutshell]. There are also a lot of responsibilities you must shoulder in the group. There are many things you need to care about, to think about, and when I saw you working hard to bring smiles to everyone’s faces, I wanted to cry (laughs). Well, you are great. I hope you can fly high and soar in this splendid era.
Yamada Ryosuke
Memorable scene: I wanted to fight with everyone in Goryokaku
The Goryokaku scene was one where I thought “I wanted to be there”. I wanted to fight together with Hijikata-san, if not, at least I might watch the filming. What was I doing then… I was probably at another job. It was Hijikata-san’s final battle scene, the fight was crackling, he rode a horse too, anyway, it was cool! Although it was a sad scene, you could instantly understand Hijikata-san’s way of life. I was fascinated. It was so cool. I also wanted to ride a horse (laughs).
Message from Kouhai to Senpai: As my senpai in life, I respect Okada-san.
Okada-kun was unusually gentle. Really, like a teacher. When I asked you about things I didn’t know, you would answer no matter what I asked. Moreover, you are not annoyed [by the questions] even a little. It’s not just with me, the way you accept everyone is amazing. There is no distance between you and the staff. As a leader, Okada-san, you made sure the mood was harmonious, so everyone wanted to get close to and talk with this Okada-san. Not only on set but in other places as well. As my senpai in life, I respect you from the bottom of my heart.
Back Shot Story
When Okada senpai got praised by the kirakira Yamada-san, he shyly said, “Is that so!”. When such an Okada-senpai saw Yamada-san’s potential in historical drama, he got excited excited. “After sword fighting, let’s ride horses next! Go practice!”, he suggested excitedly. Does that mean they will act again in a period drama soon?

Is just Her...
the next day
they falled asleep at the fireplace the sun was softly bright. is 7:00 am mac's phone couldn't stop ringing. he woke up saw Riley by his side and smiled then removed her hair from her face, he got distracted looking at her that by the time he grabbed his phone he missed the call, he checked up and had 10 missed calls from matty.
Mac- oh crap .. Riley .. *he shacked her to wake her up, what! ... * she said grumpy* -Riley! *he raised his voice to wake her up, he was in the other room changing his shirt, Mac went back to the fireplace putting his jacket back on* Riley wake up we have to go now!, Matty called. *Riley got up fast and touched her body as if something was missing and she let out a sigh of relief and laughed and sited back* mac just looked at her funny and raised his eyebrows* come on let's go.
on their way to work.
Riley- ahh my head hurts .. we drunk to much. *she touched her face*
Mac- i have a migraine too.
Riley- we need to stop at the gas station.
Mac- we are already late and you want to make a stop?
Riley- trust me, we need a boost. and besides we can't go to work like this. and my head hurts like hell, to be listening matty's screams.
Mac- You are right on that.
they are at the gas station, Riley went to buy something that could help with the hungover and got back in the car.
Riley- here, drink it.
Mac- Riley are you crazy, we already have a hungover and you buy more beer?!
Riley- can you calm down, trust me. this has worked for me before you will feel better. Well at least for a while. *he wasn't sure about it* -you trust me? *he looked at her* then drink it, relax. *he drank the beer and he in a weird way felt quite better.*
Mac- ... i don't understand the logic in this but it worked.
the phoenix somewhere in los angeles.
Matty was ANGRY bozer and desi were already there. the tree of them waiting for them to show up. then finally they walk thru the door.
Bozer- thank god i thought you will have us waiting another 3 hours here.
Mac- matty i'm so so sorry we just ..
Matty- save it I don't want to hear it. i called you more than 3 times you have a responsibility you know how important it is to be on time and if this happens again you will be in trouble.
Mac- and what about riley?
Riley- * she punched him in the arm * dude what the hell ..
Matty- it goes for both of you. i don't have time to play we have work to do.
Matty- today you all were invited to a wedding! *she starts to explain the case* the guy you are going to be tracking is..
Bozer- the groom right? what did he do?
Matty- surprisingly, this time wasn't the groom, its the father of the groom. *photo pops up*
Bozer- ah that's new.
Matty- his name is Oliver Hudson. and he is about business. the man doesn't have a break from his work, a source discovered evidence of uranium thefts at a nuclear treatment plant and informed us that his team it's the responsable. It's his sons wedding, the source told us that he already has someone who want to buy it. And I need to know who. So today he is...
Mac- is going to sell it at his son's wedding.
Matty- yes, and that's when my dream team appears, you stop him from selling it arrest him and bring me the person who's buying the uranium.
Wiltshire, England
they arrived to this 14th century village of Castle Combe, there was a lot of people celebrating for the newlyweds. Riley was wearing this beautiful long formal emerald green dress featuring a-line silhouette, backless design, with low v-neck and her hairstyle was passion/spring twists and was styled with a middle high ponytail.
Desi was looking gorgeous wearing this light yellow dress with a v neck adjust to her waist with a crossed nod as a detail, with a diamond necklace with this loosely hair and only a lock collected with this silver hair pin and mac and bozer in their neat black suits as always.
Mac- has anyone spotted our star yet? he said while walking to the bar.
Riley- not yet. *she had a drink on her hand and passed by his side, mac saw her passing, at first didn't realized it was her, he make a double take and checked her up and down, you could see in his eyes that his jaw was on the floor.
Bozer- Nothing on this side of the room.*changed to the other room and desi was walking down the stairs and walked behind Bozer, she grabbed a glass of wine while she kept walking*
Desi- this is stupid, how are we going to find this man in a freaking castle, who gets married in a castle anyways...
Riley- the little brats just like the bride.
Desi- mmm, but i get it, her man is attractive.
Riley- mhjm... he can get it *Desi laughed*
Bozer- he literally looks just like that actor that was Christian grey in 50 shades of grey..
Riley- i.. didn't know you liked that type of movies.. i thought you liked the real cinema. but youre right if i didn't know him he looks just like that actor.
Bozer- i don't but leanna make me watched those movies with her..
Mac- ok i think you're oversharing boz..
Desi- yes, but we need to be looking for his father not him, so focus.
Mac- everyone pick a floor and move we can't let this man sell the uranium.
Everyone started searching. Bozer and Desi went together to the first floors, were the party was happening, behind the castle, while Mac and Riley went upstairs, while they were searching in an really big open room, Mac reclined to the back of a white sofa and said: - i dont think its here. we have to keep looking. they heard someone was coming to their way, that part of the place was all alone and only them were there.Riley- Mac someone’s coming. *Mac grabbed the glass of champagne he took before to pretend that he was drinking. - Riley come here and grab your drink. *he said almost whispering with an anxious voice, Riley walked towards him, Mac did not think what he was going to do, surprisingly he didn’t think this time he just acted. Mac grabbed her by the arm, opened his legs and placed Riley between them, he pressed her body next to his, He ran his hand across her back, venturing into her skin for that little moment, until he reached her hip a little lower if you know what i mean. they were so close that anyone who had seen them in that scene could see that light, that flame between them, which unfortunately this two did not see, he held her as tightly as if she were going to leave, but at the same time he held her delicately, as if she was made of glass. they didn’t speak for that little unreal moment, they just looked into eachothers eyes like everyone left and was only them. Riley was surprised, and he took her by the arm she though *what the hell is this boy doing* but then her body got loose and she understood what he was doing, she put her arm around him and played with the back of his head, crossing her fingers thru his hair. the both of them felt a they felt a little tickle in the stomach and in the throat but they thought that feeling was for the adrenaline rush of almost getting caught looking for the secret room. the people who they heard coming in was a group of drunk guys they were laughing and tumbling on of them saw them and said - oh we better give them a little privacy.. they went to the next room making more noise. Mac and Riley stayed like that for a minute. when riley snapped out if as if they got hypnotized by each other’s energy.Riley- mac.. *she whispered softly, but he didn’t react* mac.. *she said again* something about the way she said his name that made Mac squirt inside. Mac- Riles.. *with his deep deep voice* Riley- they already left. *she said with disappointment in her voice as she wanted to be in his arms forever. she removed her arm of his neck slowly, mac reacted to that.Mac- oh yeah … they did … * cleared his throat, and as he slowly took his arm from her waist, he didn’t want to set her free.. Riley- oh i will go to the bathroom so i can use the laptop without distractions. Mac- yeah i’m gonna keep on looking on this side.
Riley went to the bathroom to use her laptop in private and she needed to see the blueprints of the castle, she starts to give directions to mac, apparently Oliver make his sells in a back room. then someone is trying to open the door and riley jumped of surprise and closed the laptop and hid it, she opened the door and for her surprise there was the bride who was really really drunk and wanted to use the bathroom.
Riley- oh don't worry, i was just living and smiled.
the bride- oh please i know i don't know you but can you please help me.
Riley- i really have to go
the bride- oh please. *Riley took of her communicator cause she kinda knew were she was going and wanted to give her some privacy*
Riley- ok what do you need?
bride- can you hold my dress while a use the toilet?
Riley- *opened her mouth and in her mind she said -i knew it- she raised her eyebrows and she said: yeah sure why not, is your day anyways.. *she picked up her big dress and the vail who was really long and the bride started talking and talking, Riley in her head was thinking god how much longer is she going to pee?,this is the longest pee i have ever seen.
Riley- heeey girl how many glasses of... whatever you were drinking did you have? cause..
bride- *started laughing* oh just a couple... and giggled.
Riley- great, are you done?
bride- yeah im done.
Riley- *Riley bent down to fix the bride's dress*
back with the team at the castle courtyard.
mac- hey does someone knows where Riley is? i need to know where is that room.
desi- i don't know where is she but i do know where is oliver.
mac- where?
desi- he is sitting at his table with some family and some kids.
bozer- what we do know?
mac- we have to wait, we need to catch him in the act, in the min time desi keep an eye on him, boz go see where is Riley i will keep searching for that room.
back at the restroom
Riley- well your dress is fine.
bride- thank you so so much* she hugged her and gave her a kiss in the chick* you know your my best friend.. i love you.
Riley- thank you, Chloe.
Chloe the bride who was really dizzy and very drunk already forgot those 3 minutes they were in there and said to her- wait how do you know my name?who did you come with?
Riley- oh you're not having more drinks *Riley smiled* i'm marks girlfriend, remember? the best man of your boyfriend i mean husband, and speaking of mens i think your husband is waiting for you should go find him
chloe- you know how beautiful you are, marks very lucky to have you.
*Riley blushed and grabbed the bride hands and turn her around to make her walk to the door* thats very kind of you, but i want to use the bathroom now, she said to make her leave, she knew Mac was waiting for her indications, Chloe walked to the door and she started to stumble and she felt on her back*
Riley- oh not again.
Mac is walking thru the castle following the little indications Riley could give him, he knew he was close so he was in this library and started to look on the room to make this type of device that would work like a magnet but not at the same time to help him find the secret room, looking through the room with the device that he had made with a cocktail glass, a chewing gum wrapper and his swiss knife, he was close to finding it but not that close.
back with Riley.
Riley- ok Chloe come on, you ok? i'm going to take you to your room. she grabbed her by the waist and make it look natural like nothing was going on she didn't want to get anyone's attention, she made it look like Chloe wasn't drunk and walked down the hallway, Riley memorized the blueprints so she knew were to go, one of her many skills. they got to the room and she placed her in the bed, as she was to walk of the room, she heard some steps outside there were three men and she hid and she saw another door and walked into this little room but she knew that it wasn't the one they were looking for, Riley put back her communicator on her ear again, and said: guys how's it going?
Bozer- Riley, girl i have been looking for you.
Mac- Riley where have you been?
Riley- i'm sorry but the bride find me in the bathroom and asked for help she's really drunk, and apparently she thinks we're best friends now. *she kept walking and entered another room*
Mac- glad you made a friend but i need to find that room.
Desi- Mac Oliver is about to leave the table, his bodyguard gave him the phone he just received a call, bozer is with me, we are going behind him.
Bozer- wait,*he said to desi and put his hand in her shoulder to make her stop* look he going to dance with the bride. look Chloe's is there.
Riley- what?! i left her in her bed.. damn that girl is fast.
Mac- Riley can you please look in your laptop and tell me the indication to go find that room.
Riley- well i dont have my laptop with me. tell me where are you.
Mac- what??
Riley- mac tell me where are you i memorized the structure of the castle i know where is the room.
Mac- *makes that face when he is surprised*
ok well i didn't know that you could do that, well i'm at the library, i went to the kitchen, the wine room, and then to this cellar there is by crossing the kitchen and nothing
Riley- that's why you are looking in the wrong places.wait you said that you're at the library? *she walked out the little room and walked to the other room, it was the grooms room.
mac- yes, why?
Riley- there is a door right? not the one you entered of there has to be another.
mac- yes here it is.
riley- there is the room, in there is a big painting.
mac- how is going to be in there.?
Riley- mac move it. but be careful i can't remember but i think it has motion sensors.
mac- you can memorized the blueprints of a castle but can remember if a room has motion sensors??...
Riley- well what can i say.. im Riley.
mac- *he had this cute smiled while she said it* yup the one and only.
Riley- laughed.*while she was in the room she was looking thru the window, while someone walked in, it was the groom. she turned around, and looked him very cold, she was just distracted, but for him she looked like a vision*
the groom- oh sorry i didn't know it was someone in here, excuse me.
Riley- no its ok, its your room anyways.
the groom- how do you know that?
Riley- well there is a bottle of whisky that says for james aka the groom, and you left your vows on that chair.
James- oh that's from my friends *he blushed*
Riley- yeah i notice.
James- and yeah i forgot those.*he laughed* Riley knew she had to make him talk, see if she can get something out of him about his father. but then he asked: so what's your name and what are you hiding in here? im james by the way.
Riley: first of all, i'm not hiding and second of all i already know your name remember* she pointed to the bottle.*he was embarrassed and blushed*
james- well then why are you alone?
Riley- isn't it everyone.. *she said while giving him this penetrating cold stare. James looked at her with more intrigue he was really curious about her. he took of his tie and started to play with it in his hands. he looked like it was having a bad time some said that he looked sad.
Riley with just one look could see the mind of this mans was trying to get over something*- and you what are you hiding. *she said sitting in a couch that was under the window and in front of him but at the side corner of the bed*
James- first of all im not hiding* he said trying to mimic her *Riley smiled*
Riley- oh ok. you look very tense to be the day of your wedding why aren't you with your wife?...
James- mjh i don't know maybe.. because i got an arranged marriage and i don't really love her like that and just married her because of my father.
*yess riley said in her mind, she was going in the right direction*
Riley- i knew it, you have that type of look of my father is an asshole,* he just sighed and laughed* but don't worry my dad is an asshole too.
James- *with his arms on in legs sitting on the bed and was looking to the floor and when she said that, he looked up and looked at her with more interest*- you still haven't told me your name- *he was starstruck by her, he loved how mysterious she was*
Riley- das not important, i wanna know why you think your so miserable.
back with Mac
Mac was hearing the hole conversation between the groom and Riley. He managed to move the painting without activating any alarm, the cameras of the place had already been manipulated by Riley so the image they were looking at security was a frozen image of the empty rooms. he hid and had to wait until Oliver and the man who was going to buy it came in, but he was thinking why was Riley talking with the groom and couldn't stop thinking what was happening there and why was she alone with him in that room.
.........................................................................................................
later will post the whole story, let me know if you would like me to add photos to the story or if you guys prefer to remove them, i like to add them for you, so yall can see what i actually imaginated and make it feel real and close like watching in some way the show...¿ idk ahha and of course this is the following of the las one “i'm here if you need me”. Ik this one had little macriley, but i love to see the jealous angus. (And don't ask me how but that trick of the beer it has really worked for me lol)

George A. Romero Day
I was nine or ten when I first saw Tom Savini’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990) remake. It wasn’t my first horror film. FRANKENSTEIN (1931) was an early memory, and a giant life-sized poster of his monster1 protected my room from nightmares. I’d often dream of Freddy Krueger despite never having seen any of his films at that point. Horror was everywhere in the 1980s.
I was in awe of LIVING DEAD ‘90. The idea of being trapped in a house with evils lurking outside. The paranoia that brewed among the humans… how the humans became monsters long before they were even bit. It was heavy stuff at the time. I don’t know if I drew parallels to all of this or simply thought, “Wow, those intense zombie fights that would make a cool NES game!”2
Savini’s redo was probably my first actual zombie experience. Again, I had seen zombies in other media, most like Scooby Doo or whatever other Saturday morning cartoon cribbed and remixed the undead concept to sell toys or comicbooks.
It was a few years later that I finally got to see George A. Romero’s original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968). I can’t recall if I first saw it on TV or an actual repertory screening of it. Memory is weird that way. I do remember being thoroughly blown away by it, despite more or less having memories of the plot from that remake.
youtube
I never had a problem with Black & White movies, having already been a full on film-junkie at that point, but somehow that black & white depiction of old school zombies felt hyper real. Unsettling. Fucking cool as hell. Unerving. Or maybe I was just a dumb kid. Oh, I definitely was a dumb kid, and still am, but that moment cemented George Romero in the pantheon of cinematic greats. Didn’t matter what else he did, he made NOTLD. He made a weighty zombie film full of social commentary and subtext.3 He popularized zombies. He didn’t need to do anything else.
Oh, but he did. He so did.
It was around the time I was starting to consume more horror4 that a classmate had cut some scenes into a film project we were working on. My jaw was on the floor when I first saw the gory display of gritty carnage.
“This is from the 70s?”
I knew so little. I definitely didn’t know those effects were also by Tom Savini, but everything was coming full circle, and that was one of the key moments that I fell in love with Savini without even knowing.
“You never seen this? Here, man, I’ll loan you it.”
youtube
And that was when I first saw Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978). Take some people of various walks of life and have them take refuge in an empty mall-- only to find the Zombies have returned to the place they frequented most.
“WHEN THERE’S NO ROOM IN HELL, THE DEAD WILL WALK THE EARTH!”
DOTD ‘78, The brutal and hilarious takedown of consumption and mall culture. Social Commentary, Zombie Gags, and Sick Kills. A film that’s loved by both critics and horror junkies. A film that said something and also entertained. George Romero in a nutshell.
A film that also became my gateway drug to Good Horror. And to Bad Horor. Again, I already loved horror. I loved the aesthetic, the vibe. Always drew monsters. Always collected weird monster toys. If a film was playing on a movie channel, I’d watch it.
But Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD was THE film that made me WANT to actually seek them out. The film that made me want to rewatch my older brother’s old worn Betamax tapes of classic 80s horror flicks. A film that introduced me to Dario Argento.5 A movie that got me into the music of Italian Horror Prog Rock legends, GOBLIN. The life changing event that made me a nut for Savini and every 80s fx guru around. A story that made we want to watch every zombie film I possibly could. Good or Bad, and there’s a lot of bad out there. But there’s also a lot of good. So much good.
youtube
Romero’s DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) is one of those good zombie films. I saw a midnight screening with my dad at that same repertory cinema.6 This was Romero’s third DEAD film and took place on a military base. It introduced the concept of the military studying, training, and weaponizing the living dead. It also has one of the freakiest scenes involving hands and walls that still rattles me to this day. It has a stomach churning scene involving a ripped stomach. It’s wonderful, largely in part to once again utilizing Savini’s talents, as well as Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger-- who years later brought THE WALKING DEAD to your homes. Romero’s legacy still felt to this day.
That being said, Romero’s legacy was far more than just Zombie films, of course. He made a film, that’s rather timely now7, about a plague that made people crazy called... THE CRAZIES (1973). There was another about a vampire wannabe named MARTIN (1978). A spectacular 80s horror anthology film series called CREEPSHOW8 (1982 & 1987). And a wonderfully bizarre film about a homicidal monkey named, appropriately enough, MONKEY SHINES (1988). I saw that last one before I even knew who he was but I never really forgot it. And those are just a few.
youtube
He revisited his LIVING DEAD films with additional sequels in the 2000s and 2010s and was working on another up until his death. I was very lucky to briefly thank him during a convention, a year or so before he passed. Thanked him for the films. For everything.
He didn’t just impact me, of course. He impacted the people he worked with, who’ve gone on to impact other people in turn. He’s impacted the fans who got into horror because of him. He’s impacted the horror fans who weren’t even fans of his, because they most definitely liked something that was made by someone who was inspired by George Romero.
You’ll see it with a DOTD’s actor cameo in a Rob Zombie film, or a gruesome creature effect in a micro-budget classic. You’ll see it in a modern classic like TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) or while laughing your guts out at SHAWN OF THE DEAD (2004).
We aren’t just talking about movies, we’re talking books, music, and video games. 90s SIMPSON’s references. We’re talking art, tattoos, and comics. RPGs, Board games, Toys, and Funko Pops. Those Halloween decorations you keep in your home all year long . The clothes you wear. Your creepy and kooky badass goth aesthetic. A lot of what we love about horror today is thanks to George A. Romero.
youtube
He didn’t create zombies… but he certainly gave them life. He did more than that. He made horror important again.
I can’t do justice to George A. Romero with words. His work speaks for itself. So today, on what would have been his 81st Birthday, watch some Romero. If you’re out there quarantining, staying at home, under a curfew, and fearing the unfathomable, infectious dangers lurking outside your door… definitely watch Romero.
This decade is off to a weird start, luckily we have Romero’s influence to get us through it.
Happy Birthday, George! And thank you for infecting me with horror.

ENDNOTES FROM THE GRAVE
1. And you know what? I still call him Frankenstein. Because he’s essentially his son. That’s his creation. And Victor would have had the hubris to name his creation after himself if he had not abandoned that poor schlub. But I digress…
2. Actually, that’s exactly what I thought. And about 30 years later, Zombies are still a staple of modern video gaming, from Resident Evil and Doom still going strong after three decades, to Call of Duty and Red Dead Redemption still having Zombie mods. To every friggin’ game out there that has any undead horror creeping about. The nine-year-old me is having a blast right now.
3. I had definitely caught on the subtext and themes by that point that I may have missed while watching the remake as a kid. Still a dumb kid, though.
4. Thanks in part to HBO’s TALES FROM THE CRYPT reruns on FOX. Expect another nonsensical rambling piece on that show and the 50s comics that inspired it sometime in the future.
5. And that opened the doorway into Giallo, Fulci, and a whole slew of Italian Exploitation and American Slasher films and that’s a whole other long screed for another time.
6. My dad was another reason I love this genre. He loved horror movies. I still hear his voice in my head saying, “Ooooh, It’s a Scary Movie!” in his German accent.
7. Actually, aren’t they all?
8. Which has also had a revival in the form of Shudder’s excellent new CREEPSHOW anthology series made by Romero’s DAY OF THE DEAD Alumni Greg Nicotero! See how it’s all connected?

The Best of 2019
What a year. By the time 2019 ended, I had seen over 130 new movies. It's actually probably closer to 150 but I lost count. There are a few titles I missed, such as The Dead Don’t Die, The Fanatic and Honeyland so obviously, this is not an all-encompassing, definitive list of 2019’s best, but it should give you a good idea of which films you need to check out if you haven’t already.
I usually like to save the #10 spot on my list for a movie that’s just for me. Normally, this would mean a giant monster movie, an off-beat creation nobody else saw, a comic book movie that spoke to my particular tastes or maybe a Canadian movie I know didn’t get the opportunity to shine like it should’ve. This year, that’s not happening. Trimming my list down to 10 was hard enough. I certainly wasn’t going to sacrifice one more to make it just 9. Let's dig in.
10. The Farewell
It’s been weeks since The Farewell and I’m still thinking about it. If I was put in the same position as Billi, I'm not sure what I'd do? Is it better to tell someone that's dying that their days are numbered, or should you spare them from that burden? Is it really them you’d be sparing, or is keeping the secret for your own selfish needs? Writer/director Lulu Wang asks serious questions about culture I had never contemplated before. There’s a lot for you here and even more if your family comes from mixed backgrounds.
9. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
I heard some complaints about Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) not being the main character of this film by Marielle Heller, from writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. It was the right choice. The plot has a cyical reporter meet Rogers and through their relatively brief interaction, learn what we knew going in. It delivers a moving character arc without having to stain its subject with flaws we didn't want to see. The quasi-meta presentation is what elevates it into top-10 status. That extra touch means it does a lot more than simply re-iterate what we saw in the 2018 documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor?.
8. Knives Out
Knives Out is one of the most entertaining films all year. There are no profound moments of meditation, no earth-shattering realizations about yourself, just a mystery to be solved. All the suspects are so intriguing they could be the stars of their own movies. Put together in the same house as a dead body and you’ve got no idea who did it. Its screenplay is excellent. The twists are juicy. Everything ads up in a satisfying manner. Rian Johnson is already working on a sequel. I can’t wait.
7. Apollo 11
There are few holdovers from the list I made halfway through the year, which either says something about the strength of the second half of 2019, or the weakness of the first. Either way, you’ve got to see Apollo 11. It’s the closest thing to going back in time and being there when man landed on the moon. The tension and anticipation are overwhelming. Knowing what happened doesn't matter. The way the footage is assembled is nothing short of incredible. Why this documentary wasn't present at the Academy Awards is beyond me.
6. Uncut Gems
Adam Sandler should’ve been nominated for an Oscar. He wasn’t. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts it's because of his association with all of those brain-dead Happy Madison Production comedies. His history with cinema shouldn't matter. The movie is what matters. The fact is, this was the perfect role for him. It isn’t even that Sandler’s doing something different, it’s that he’s being used to his full potential. If you weren’t glued to the screen, eager to see what’s coming next, this movie would have you jumping out of the window screaming - anything to escape the anxiety the Safdie Brothers serve up with devilish grins.
5. The Lighthouse
Next on my list is The Lighthouse. Right away, the aspect ratio and black-and-white cinematography lets you know you’re in for something different. You have no idea. What I love so much about this film is the way it handles madness. At the end of the day, I’m not sure if I could tell you if Robert Pattinson’s character was crazy, if Willem Dafoe’s character was the nutty one, or if they both were. It shows you just enough to make you doubt your own sanity. It’s also unexpectedly funny, which makes it feel oddly genuine. In one scene, Robert Pattinson's Ephraim Winslow gets a hold of the lighthouse's logs. In it, his boss, Thomas (Willem Dafoe) recommends Ephraim be disciplined for masturbating excessively. Considering Thomas has been cavorting with some kind of tentacle creature up in the lighthouse (at least that's what I think I saw, I'm not so sure anymore), all you can do is laugh. What kind of loony bin is this turning into? One I'm looking forward to revisiting.
4. 1917
Shot in a way that makes it all look like one take, 1917 is a technical marvel. It hooks itself up to your circular system and steadily replaces your blood with pure, undistilled stress. As you're about to flatline, it stops and gives you a breather. A shot of a meadow untouched by the ravages of war; a reminder of what the soldiers are fighting for and of how utterly devastating armed combat is on humanity as a whole. Gorgeous cinematography, powerful emotions, magnificent production values.
3. Joker
Along with Godzilla: King of the Monsters (a movie they basically made for me), this was my most anticipated movie of the year. To get ready, I watched Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, two Scorsese films Joker director Todd Phillips drew a lot of inspiration from. For some reason, it seems as though many critics took offense to the similarities. Sometimes I understand differing opinions from mine. This time, I don’t. It’s a great film that warns of the dangers of letting people like Arthur Fleck (brilliantly performed by Joaquin Phoenix) fall through the cracks. Left unchecked, he discovers that by doing terrible things, he becomes a “better” version of himself. It’s not a drama. It’s a horror movie that spins the familiar Batman archenemy in a new direction but also stays true to the character. There are several scenes in this movie that are going to be permanently imprinted in my brain. Those stairs. Need I say more?
Runner-ups
Avengers: Endgame
Even if every single Marvel movie going forward is awful, this caps off the whopping 22-chapter saga epically. A couple of aspects bugged me enough that it could only manage to make the runner-up list but it's a terrific film.
Booksmart
The funniest comedy of the year. I think back to Amy and Molly using their hairs as masks and still can't manage to hold back a few chuckles months later.
Toy Story 4
This one was hard to cut. The only flaw I could find was that it isn’t on the same level as 3… even though they’re both 5-star movies.
Midsommar
I’ve heard the extended cut is even better than the original. I wish I’d had the chance to see it in theatres.
Jojo Rabbit
Audacious and heartfelt. I loved those scenes of Scarlett Johanson being a mom. Her agent might've dropped the ball getting her cast in Ghost in the Shell but she sure knew how to pick great work in 2019.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino brings us back to a time when Roman Polanski was simply a good director instead of a convicted rapist, movie stars were untouchable, and the death of someone’s wife under mysterious circumstances was nothing to raise eyebrows about. It’s not a movie that screams “here and now”. If anything, it’s regressive. That said, I cannot deny the experience I had watching it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kinda thing and I doubt even Tarantino could pull it off again. I wonder how many people went in knowing what happened to Sharon Tate like I did.
Marriage story
It’s nothing but raw emotion and powerhouse performances in this drama about two people you love going through a divorce. I always make it my goal to watch movies all the way through without any interruptions. Several times throughout, I was tempted to hit "Pause" so I could catch my breath.
Internet lists are everywhere. You know why, don’t you? They suck you in and when you get down to it, most don’t require all that much effort to put together. Except when I make them, apparently. These bi-annual lists always turn out to be difficult to put together. 2019's proved particularly arduous. I’m fairly sure that my #3 movie belongs there. Out of all the movies on this list, it’s probably the one I’m going to go back to most often. The other two? I’d say that technically, one may be better than the other but I think the other one is “more important” so that gives it the edge. What I’m trying to say is, they’re all winners and on a different day, I might even swap them around.
2. Little Women
I have only seen three of the seven silver screen adaptations of Louisa May Alcott’s novel and I don’t expect any of the others to top this one. The secret ingredient to this one's success is Greta Gerwig. Writing and directing, she does so much more than merely translate the classic to movie form. She re-arranges the story to give the events a greater punch than they would if they were shown chronologically and puts a little more emphasis on a couple of key moments (that tear-jerking Christmas, for example) to crank up the emotion. She also makes it more modern without having to change anything about the setting or characters. Admittedly, the back-and-forth between the past and present is a little jarring at first - makes you wonder what Greta Gerwig could’ve done had she been given the de-aging budget Martin Scorsese was given - but that’s where the performances and costumes come in. It takes mere moments before you get what the movie is doing. I’ve said it already but it made me cry.
1. Parasite
To make this list, I didn’t go through all of my past reviews and check which ones were rated what. I thought back to which movies gave me the most vivid memories, which ones gave me the biggest reactions. I’m still not sure how I feel about the final final moment but there’s so much about Parasite that I admire. This would be a great one to watch with others just to see their reactions to the reveal about the bookcase.
