The subsequent calm was something Lin Yan wasn't expecting. The thing seemed to have decided it tortured him enough and nothing else happened the rest of the night. When he woke up, the entire room was clean. All the red paint had disappeared, the light gray printed wallpaper and the screen wall painted by the students of the Academy of Fine Arts were intact, and the glass was spotless. There was no other evidence to prove that the absurdity of last night had ever happened except for the shameful traces of liquid on Lin Yan's body and clothes. He took a bath and threw the red clothes into the washbowl. Compared with the power of the invisible thing, he was clearly at a disadvantage. My Top 10 Favorite Caps Moments of the Season Thus Far

As it is a Thursday, there’s no game today, and I am deliberately procrastinating, I have decided to make a countdown post of my top 10 favorite Caps moments of the season up until this point.

Disclaimer: these moments probably won’t be the actual best moments of the season, as I’ve forgotten a lot of important ones and have a bias towards things that have happened more recently. But I’m doing this for enjoyment and I hope that you enjoy it too.

I will be including a countdown of the moments, including a link to the video (I can’t embed the video cause I’m not that tech savvy) and a screencap. Now here we go.

10. Marcus Johansson’s overtime gamewinner in Chicago (11/11/16 at CHI)

In the first half Mojo enjoyed the sweet taste of the overtime goal. This one was made especially sweet by it being against the Hawks, and for TJ Oshie inexplicably tripping over his own skates and subsequently tripping a Chicago player, allowing Mojo to bang the winner home.

9. All of the times Andre Burakovsky scored the first goal of the game (1/15/17 vs PHI, 1/16/17 at PIT, 1/19/17 at STL, 1/21/17 at DAL)

I love my boy so much. In the recent weeks my boy got into a stretch where he really wanted to be the first one to score a goal. So much so that he was the first goal scorer in four straight games. I’m so proud of him look at him go. Go look at all his goals they’re all so beautiful.

8. TJ Oshie’s shootout goal that wasn’t actually in the shootout (2/1/17 vs BOS)

Oh my LAWD. TJ Oshie, the master of the shootout, got a nice pass from Backstrom and a breakaway and forgot that it was regulation time and not the shootout. He made Tuukka Rask look absolutely silly and I cried ‘cause it was beautiful.

7. Philipp Grubauer’s ridiculous save against Tyler Seguin (1/21/17 at DAL)

Holy frickin cow Grubauer absolutely robbed Tyler Seguin in arguably the best save of the entire year. My jaw dropped so hard, Grubi saved my life with this save.

6. Alex Ovechkin’s hat trick against the Blues (11/23/16 vs STL)

I love Ovi and I love hat tricks. What’s better than an Ovi hat trick? All three of these goals were beautiful and they should all be watched many times.

5. Tom Wilson’s fight against Brett Ritchie in Dallas (1/21/17 at DAL)

The Caps haven’t done much fighting this year, but Tom Wilson had himself a nice fight in Dallas. Actually, it wasn’t anywhere near Willy’s best right, but he still bloodied up this guy’s entire face and it was amazing.

4. Evgeny Kuznetsov’s ridiculous goal in Montreal (1/9/17 at MTL)

I do not exaggerate when I say that Kuzy saved my life with this goal. When I was watching this game I was having a crap day, and he scored to put the Caps up. What a beautiful classic Kuzy goal.

3. The Dmitry Orlov hit on Matt Duchene (10/18/16 vs COL)

I AM STILL NOT OVER THIS HIT. I WILL NEVER BE OVER THIS HIT. This is the best damn hit I have ever seen. Matt Duchene was fuckin launched into orbit. Matt Duchene is yet to have landed. Everytime I think about this hit I can’t stop smiling because it is THAT GOOD.

2. Nicklas Backstrom’s 500th assist (1/7/17 at OTT)

I have lots of love for Nicklas Backstrom. He got his 500th career assist, the most in Caps history (and also the first Cap to ever do that of course). He doesn’t get nearly enough recognition for what he does, but on this night he did. You can just see the glee on Ovi’s face. You go, Nick Backstrom. Let the NHL know why we love you so much.

1. Alex Ovechkin’s 1000th point (1/11/17 vs PIT)

Really, how could this not be number 1? I almost cried when I saw it was in the stars for Ovi to get his 1000th point at home against the Penguins. And he did it in under a minute. Holy cow I love Alex Ovechkin and it’s an honor to be watching a legend.

Looking Ahead: Navigating the Holiday Break

All fantasy owners need help in the short term AND the long term. The Looking Ahead feature identifies one player to plug into lineups in the short term, a second to invest in for the long term, a third to bench for the coming week, and a fourth who will struggle to meet expectations for some time. All players discussed are selected based on their upcoming schedule.

Stats updated through Wednesday, December 19

The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)

Cam Ward, G, Chicago Blackhawks (Available in 85 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Nothing about Ward’s stat line this year screams “GRAB HIM” – Ward has a dismal 0.888 SV%, 3.95 GAA and only five wins in 13 starts – but with another concussion to Corey Crawford, it’ll be Ward’s net for the foreseeable future. The interesting thing about the ugly GAA is that Ward has been peppered with pucks (good for leagues that track raw saves) and has only had two “really bad starts” where his save percentage was below 85%.

He’s proven in the past to be a competent starter, and is a fine stop-gap for Crawford owners or fantasy owners in deep leagues where goalies are as scarce as hen’s teeth.

The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)

Ryan Pulock, D, New York Islanders (Available in 64 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – The way this section of the article usually gets written is sorting all players on Yahoo! by ownership, and then scrolling down until everyone is below 50%; the reason that’s mentioned is because of the absolute shock when I saw Ryan Pulock only 36% owned. While his 14 points (2G-12A) aren’t jaw-dropping, Pulock’s ownership is half of Aaron Ekblad’s, which is absurd – Pulock is playing 22:54 per game, and is picking up 3.4 combined hits/blocks per game, 2.15 shots per game and getting PP2 time. If you’re in a league where Pulock is available, jump on that now and right this wrong.

The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)

David Krejci, C, Boston Bruins (Owned in 38 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – If you picked up Krejci while Patrice Bergeron was injured, job well done, congratulations! Unfortunately, he can be benched for the next little while, as Patrice Bergeron is due back this week and Krejci’s role as first-line centre between Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak will come to an end. A total of 14 of Krejci’s 29 points this season have been attached to either Marchand or Pastrnak, and he plays the bulk of his minutes away from those two when Bergeron is in the lineup.

If you can shop him in a 2-for-1 trade, now would be the time to do it, but otherwise he can sit on the bench until Jake DeBrusk gets back or get dropped entirely.

The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)

Mikhail Sergachev, D, Tampa Bay Lightning (Owned in 56 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Sergachev has been a big disappointment this year as he’s picked up zero goals and twelve assists in 35 games so far, and Thursday night found himself in the press box. There’s no question that Sergachev is an offensive talent and will produce closer to the 9G-31A in 79 games that he put up last year, but behind Victor Hedman and now Ryan McDonagh in both ice time and special teams roles, it may not be for a while yet.

His name still has value and Tampa Bay is a very good team, so he could probably fetch a strong return in keeper leagues or leagues that track plus/minus (although he’s sitting at only +6 on the season.)

Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)

Colorado – If you’re lucky enough to own one or more of MacKinnon / Rantanen / Landeskog, you’re licking your lips at the Avs’ upcoming games: Colorado plays six times between December 21 and January 2, including Chicago twice, Los Angeles and San Jose (all at home) as well as playing Vegas and Arizona on the road. Colorado continues to be a one-line team, but the depth scoring in Tyson Jost/JT Compher can knock in the odd goal as well.

Arizona – Their scoring has dried up over the past couple games, but Arizona will squeeze in six games in this period, and get to face some woeful defensive opponents in Edmonton, Los Angeles and Anaheim. The ‘Yotes are at home for the game against the Oilers as well as facing Vegas and Colorado at home, and will do the California road trip against the Kings, Ducks and Sharks.

Boston – There are teams with more games in this stretch than the Bruins have, but Boston gets the advantage of playing against Carolina, Buffalo and Chicago – all on the road – as well as home games against Nashville and New Jersey. Boston should be back to almost full strength, with the return of Patrice Bergeron imminent and Zdeno Chara not too far behind.

Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)

Minnesota – The Wild will be without the services of Matt Dumba for a while, and have a tough schedule ahead with only four games going to January 2. Minnesota’s had a lot of trouble scoring of late: in their last ten games, the Wild scored three or less eight times, but exploded for games of seven goals and five goals, which makes their overall rank of 17th feel a bit fraudulent. The Wild will split two road games (Chicago, Winnipeg) and two home games (Dallas, Pittsburgh.)

NY Islanders – A major surprise defensively – the Islanders rank fourth in goals against on the season – but a major disappointment offensively, don’t look for much out of the Islanders over the holidays; while a home game against Ottawa is always good for offensive production, road games against Dallas, Toronto, and Buffalo aren’t as appealing.

Montreal – Montreal’s schedule is as bleak as the Wild and Islanders, but even worse for the Habs is that all four games come on the road. The Habs get to spend New Year’s Eve in Dallas, and also face Vegas, Florida and Tampa – with the game against the Lightning the second half of a back-to-back.

The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)

Dustin Brown, W, Los Angeles Kings (Available in 65 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Although he’s constantly derided as being a plug in the same vein as Milan Lucic (who is a plug,) Brown should be added in any leagues where he’s available – immediately. Last year, Brown put up 28-33 (including 25 PP points) while firing 222 pucks on net and averaging just under three peripheral stats (hit/blk) per game; he’s healthy and playing top minutes alongside Anze Kopitar again, and saw 22:17 in his first game back which also included a goal.

The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)

David Rittich, G, Calgary Flames (Available in 84 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Here’s what Calgary’s ostensible starter Mike Smith has done this season: ten games started with five wins, a .871 save percentage, and five “really bad starts” – starts below .850. Conversely, Rittich has started four times (six appearances) and has a 3W-1L line with a sparkling 0.939 SV% and four quality starts to zero bad starts. Considering they play behind the exact same team, this should speak volumes about the low quality goaltending the Flames are getting from Smith. Rittich should continue to pick up more consistent starts.

The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)

Matt Murray, G, Pittsburgh (Owned in 92 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Much like the David Rittich/Mike Smith situation in Calgary, Matt Murray is in danger of getting Wally Pipp’ed after his tough injury issues and poor play to start the season. It never feels good to point to concussions as a possible problem, but through his first six starts – which is a lower number than it should be since he missed time with another concussion – he’s lost twice (fine!) and picked up a shutout (even finer!) but has allowed 21 goals. His save percentage is an ugly-looking 0.893, he’s at -2.977 Goals Saved Above Average, and while he’ll still pick up wins thanks to the offensive side of the Penguins, his stats could be ugly and if they stay ugly much longer he’s in danger of moving into a 1A/1B.

For comparison’s sake, Casey DeSmith is at 2-0-2 with a 0.932 SV%, one shutout, and three quality starts to zero bad starts in his four started games (five overall).

The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)

Patrick Marleau, W, Toronto Maple Leafs (Owned in 45 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Averaging close to what he saw last year, 17:14, Marleau is well on his way to another 82-game season where he fails to hit 50 points. With only 1G-4A through 12 games, Marleau is only on pace for 34 points – and only one of those five came on the power play. While his goal-scoring could be chalked up to a shooting percentage 9% less than his career average, Marleau is only on pace for 157 shots this season and should see a career low in goals.

Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)

Tampa Bay – Between the 2nd and 14th, the Lightning have six games, and they see some very soft opponents in that stretch: Ottawa (twice), Edmonton, the Islanders and Buffalo. There’s only one back-to-back (at Montreal followed by Ottawa) but Tampa still gets three home games out of the six and currently sit 5th in goals for.

Montreal – The Habs also have six games, and also get the benefit of facing some easier-than-average teams. Beyond games at home against Tampa Bay and Vegas which could pose some problems, Montreal gets to face both New York teams as well as Buffalo and Edmonton. Montreal’s currently 8th in Corsi% at 5v5 and their top-six have been clicking along well – the Habs have scored three or more in eight of eleven games so far.

San Jose – Tied with Tampa for 5th in Goals For and now with Joe Thornton back, the Sharks play six games during this period, with four coming at home and only one back-to-back. The back-to-back are both road games, coming against Dallas and St. Louis, but the rest of their schedule sees them face off against Philadelphia, Minnesota, Nashville and Calgary.

Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)

An apology: I didn’t realize Florida/Winnipeg played in Finland last week when I wrote about the Panthers’ horrible schedule

Winnipeg – Coming back from Helsinki, the Jets only get four games during this period. Three of the games are at home which will help (the other is in Helsinki), but they face tough shutdown opponents in Colorado and New Jersey, as well as Buffalo and Washington.

Calgary – The Flames have three days off between a home game against Chicago and the start of their California road trip, and only play four times between the 2nd and 14th. They do have a back-to-back which is good for David Rittich (see above), but not great for a team that was in a major dry spell offensively before a five-goal outburst during the third period of Thursday’s win over Colorado.

Florida – The Panthers get five days off after playing the Jets in Helsinki and then get three straight home games, but also have a back-to-back jammed in there and end their five-game stretch at Philadelphia. The Cats’ opponents should help Florida generate some offense – Edmonton, NY Islanders, Ottawa – but Florida’s had an extremely inconsistent season in terms of scoring and at a time when goals are easy to come by, Florida is averaging just three goals per game.

Lining Up: Lines in Columbus, Nashville, and Detroit

Artemi Panarin is adjusting to life on his new team with new linemates.

This week we take a couple of lines that have been hot in their past three games and another with the potential to improve as the season progresses.

Artemi Panarin – Pierre-Luc Dubois – Josh Anderson

Team ES Point Production: 15 | Line ES Point Production: 8

Last season saw Cam Atkinson and Alex Wennberg put their names on the map in Columbus, and with a new season we have new names looking to take that place.  Pierre-Luc Dubois was drafted third overall in 2016 after totalling 199 points in 164 QMJHL games. At first glance, his 11 points in 27 games this season don’t seem too impressive, but then you realize he has six points in his last four games. What’s the cause of this increased production? Increased ice time. In his first four games, Dubois averaged 13:46 of time on ice. Fast forward to his most recent four game stretch and you’ll see he averaged 19:14 of ice time. As with all rookies, we have no past production to make sound judgements on sustainability, but nothing about his shooting percentage screams regression.

Josh Anderson is also making a name for himself in Columbus as he sits second in team scoring, behind only Artemi Panarin. Last season was Anderson’s first real one, and he was limited to a bottom-six role alongside William Karlsson and Matthew Calvert. Needless to say, first line minutes beside Panarin is a much better situation to be in. Last year Anderson was on a 0.37 point per game pace while averaging 12 minutes of ice time, so it makes sense that as his ice time has risen to an average of 17:15 this season, so has his scoring pace (0.68). His shooting rate has also improved as it took him a whole season to total 119 shots in 2016-2017, but in just 25 games this year he already has 81! He’s on track to have 259 by the end of the season! Now I don’t get a chance to watch a lot of Blue Jackets’ hockey, so I’ll let Aaron Portzline who covers the Blue Jackets give you an idea of Anderson’s style with a comparison to a younger Rick Nash.

As we mentioned earlier, Artemi Panarin leads the Blue Jackets in scoring, but he’s doing so with a modest 20 points in 27 games. Now obviously expectations need to be lowered for a player once they stop playing with Patrick Kane, but at least Panarin has shown he wasn’t completely piggybacking off of Kane’s production in Chicago. While it’s encouraging that Panarin is on pace for more shots than he had in Chicago (231 vs. 211 and 187), his is seeing less starts in the offensive zone. On a Blackhawks team that boasted the defensive ability of Jonathan Toews, Panarin was seeing 75.37% (2015-2016) and 80.51% (2016-2017) of his starts in the offensive zone. Stepping into a more well-rounded role in Columbus has seen that number drop to 64.03%. This trio currently sports the highest Corsi For % in the league at 67.82%, so they are certainly driving offense!

With Cam Atkinson and Alex Wennberg struggling this season, it might be time to get a new set of Blue Jackets for the winter.

Kevin Fiala – Kyle Turris – Craig Smith

Team ES Point Production: 14 | Line ES Point Production: 7 (50% of team)

Since being acquired from the Ottawa Senators, Kyle Turris has 10 points in 12 games with the Predators. That’s quite a bit better than Matt Duchene’s two points in 11 games for the Senators, but more time needs to pass before we make our final judgements. While Duchene has moved up and down the line up in an attempt to find chemistry with his teammates, Turris seems to have immediately clicked with Kevin Fiala and Craig Smith as this line has spent most of its time together since Turris’ arrival. Although Turris’ current 0.83 point per game pace is higher than we’re used to (0.67 average in last five seasons), none of the underlying numbers point to impending doom, so breaking the 60-point barrier seems realistic for the Predators’ forward.

Kevin Fiala was drafted 11th overall in 2014 and got his first real taste of NHL action in the 54 games he played last season. His average time on ice has gone up a minute since last season (13:31 to 14:32), and he is finally seeing playing time with the man advantage. With 17 points in 26 games so far this season (10 points in 12 games since Turris came to Nashville), he’s beginning to develop into an offensive threat.

Last season, it took Craig Smith 78 games to score 12 goals. This season he already has 11 goals in just 27 games.  While he is on pace for just under 200 shots, his 17.2% shooting percentage is almost double his career average of 9.6%, so regression is coming! Like Fiala, his ice time has increased since last season (from 13:49 to 15:11) and he is seeing more time on the power play.

This trio’s value is found in their streaming potential with such low ownership in Yahoo leagues (Turris – 63%, Fiala – 6%, Smith 18%). Keep in mind that their Corsi For % as a line is not among the league’s best, so they haven’t been driving offense as much as we’d like.

Anthony Mantha – Henrik Zetterberg – Gustav Nyquist

Team ES Point Production: 6 | Line ES Point Production: 0 (0% of team)

The Detroit Red Wings are currently on a seven-game losing streak after suffering a 10-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. While their defensive flaws have been exposed through the 36 goals they’ve allowed during this slide, their offense has only managed 14 goals in the same span. Although everyone on Detroit’s roster can be better, this particular line is sporting a Corsi For % of 45.37%, and needs to be spending more time scoring than defending if this team is going to win games.

At the tender age of 37, Henrik Zetterberg’s years of elite production seem to be in the rear-view mirror. Despite surprising the hockey world with 68 points in 82 games last year, his current total of 15 points in 27 games seems to be closer to what we should expect of him going forward. That being said, Zetterberg also had a poor start to last season (14 points in the first 22 games) before finishing the campaign of with 54 points in his final 60 games. His shot volume and ice time are right around what they’ve been in the past, so perhaps the Red Wing captain makes for a good buy-low option. As time passes, Zetterberg’s experience makes him a good leader that helps guys like Nyquist, Mantha, and even Dylan Larkin develop into better players.

After breaking out with 48 points in 57 games of the 2013-2014 season, expectations were high for Gustav Nyquist. Unfortunately, he’s never been able to match that rate of production and the 60-point mark continues to elude him. While his 12 points in 27 games so far this season don’t leave much room for optimism, he did have a slow start last season as well (20 points in his first 42 games, 26 in final 34). It’s encouraging to see him on pace for what would be a career-high 219 shots, but as we mentioned earlier, this line needs to get better at driving offense before Nyquist can start producing again.

After years of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg hockey, Anthony Mantha is in line to be the future of the Detroit Red Wings. Despite modest point totals (36 points in 60 games), Mantha had a chance to get accustomed to the NHL level of play in his rookie season. With 22 points in 27 games this year, it seems he is developing into the player the Red Wings thought he would be when they drafted him 20th overall in 2013. While his shooting percentage of 16.7% seems a bit high, he could just be an efficient shooter. Only time will tell.

While times have been tough recently for the Red Wings, there’s a good chance they take flight in the second half of the season.
