ABSOLUTE MUST READ.
Opening Statement of Dr. Fiona Hill
to the House of Representatives
Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
November 21, 2019
Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member Nunes, and members of the Committee. Thank you for inviting me to testify before you today. I have a short opening statement.
I appreciate the importance of the Congress’s impeachment inquiry.
I am appearing today as a fact witness, as I did during my deposition on October 14th, in order to answer your questions about what I saw, what I did, what I knew, and what I know with regard to the subjects of your inquiry. I believe that those who have information that the Congress deems relevant have a legal and moral obligation to provide it.
I take great pride in the fact that I am a nonpartisan foreign policy expert, who has served under three different Republican and Democratic presidents. I have no interest in advancing the outcome of your inquiry in any particular direction, except toward the truth.
1
I will not provide a long narrative statement, because I believe that the interest of Congress and the American people is best served by allowing you to ask me your questions. I am happy to expand upon my October 14th deposition testimony in response to your questions today.
But before I do so, I would like to communicate two things.
First, I’d like to share a bit about who I am. I am an American by choice, having become a citizen in 2002. I was born in the northeast of England, in the same region George Washington’s ancestors came from. Both the region and my family have deep ties to the United States.
My paternal grandfather fought through World War I in the Royal Field Artillery, surviving being shot, shelled, and gassed before American troops intervened to end the war in 1918.
During the Second World War, other members of my family fought to defend the free world from fascism alongside American soldiers, sailors, and airmen.
The men in my father’s family were coal miners whose families always struggled with poverty.
2
When my father, Alfred, was 14, he joined his father, brother, uncles and cousins in the coal mines to help put food on the table.
When the last of the local mines closed in the 1960s, my father wanted to emigrate to the United States to work in the coal mines in West Virginia, or in Pennsylvania. But his mother, my grandmother, had been crippled from hard labor. My father couldn’t leave, so he stayed in northern England until he died in 2012. My mother still lives in my hometown today.
While his dream of emigrating to America was thwarted, my father loved America, its culture, its history and its role as a beacon of hope in the world. He always wanted someone in the family to make it to the United States.
I began my University studies in 1984, and in 1987 I won a place on an academic exchange to the Soviet Union. I was there for the signing of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, and when President Ronald Reagan met Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. This was a turning point for me. An American professor who I met there told me about graduate student scholarships to the United States, and the very next year, thanks to his advice, I arrived in America to start my advanced studies at Harvard.
3
Years later, I can say with confidence that this country has offered for me opportunities I never would have had in England. I grew up poor with a very distinctive working-class accent. In England in the 1980s and 1990s, this would have impeded my professional advancement.
This background has never set me back in America. For the better part of three decades, I have built a career as a nonpartisan, nonpolitical national security professional focusing on Europe and Eurasia and especially the former Soviet Union.
I have served our country under three presidents: in my most recent capacity under President Trump, as well as in my former position of National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. In that role, I was the Intelligence Community’s senior expert on Russia and the former Soviet republics, including Ukraine.
It was because of my background and experience that I was asked to join the National Security Council in 2017. At the NSC, Russia was a part of my portfolio, but I was also responsible for coordinating U.S. policy for all of Western Europe, all of Eastern Europe (including Ukraine) and Turkey, along with NATO and the European Union. I was hired initially by General Michael
4
Flynn, K.T. McFarland, and General Keith Kellogg, but then started work in April 2017 when General McMaster was the National Security Advisor.
I—and they—thought I could help them with President Trump’s stated goal of improving relations with Russia, while still implementing policies designed to deter Russian conduct that threatens the United States, including the unprecedented and successful Russian operation to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
This relates to the second thing I want to communicate.
Based on questions and statements I have heard, some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country—and that perhaps, somehow, for some reason, Ukraine did. This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves.
The unfortunate truth is that Russia was the foreign power that systematically attacked our democratic institutions in 2016. This is the public conclusion of our intelligence agencies, confirmed in bipartisan Congressional reports. It is beyond dispute, even if some of the underlying details must remain classified.
5
The impact of the successful 2016 Russian campaign remains evident today. Our nation is being torn apart. Truth is questioned. Our highly professional and expert career foreign service is being undermined.
U.S. support for Ukraine—which continues to face armed Russian aggression—has been politicized.
The Russian government’s goal is to weaken our country—to diminish America’s global role and to neutralize a perceived U.S. threat to Russian interests. President Putin and the Russian security services aim to counter U.S. foreign policy objectives in Europe, including in Ukraine, where Moscow wishes to reassert political and economic dominance.
I say this not as an alarmist, but as a realist. I do not think long-term conflict with Russia is either desirable or inevitable. I continue to believe that we need to seek ways of stabilizing our relationship with Moscow even as we counter their efforts to harm us. Right now, Russia’s security services and their proxies have geared up to repeat their interference in the 2020 election. We are running out of time to stop them. In the course of this investigation, I would ask that you please not promote politically driven falsehoods that so clearly advance Russian interests.
6
As Republicans and Democrats have agreed for decades, Ukraine is a valued partner of the United States, and it plays an important role in our national security. And as I told this Committee last month, I refuse to be part of an effort to legitimize an alternate narrative that the Ukrainian government is a U.S. adversary, and that Ukraine—not Russia—attacked us in 2016.
These fictions are harmful even if they are deployed for purely domestic political purposes. President Putin and the Russian security services operate like a Super PAC. They deploy millions of dollars to weaponize our own political opposition research and false narratives. When we are consumed by partisan rancor, we cannot combat these external forces as they seek to divide us against each another, degrade our institutions, and destroy the faith of the American people in our democracy.
I respect the work that this Congress does in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities, including in this inquiry, and I am here to help you to the best of my ability. If the President, or anyone else, impedes or subverts the national security of the United States in order to further domestic political or personal interests, that is more than worthy of your attention. But we must not let domestic
7
politics stop us from defending ourselves against the foreign powers who truly wish us harm.
I am ready to answer your questions.

I just read your post about finances and investment properties and found it very interesting! I'm wondering, if you don't mind, what advice would you have for an 18 year old college student (me!) with little to no knowledge of finances, loans, real estate, etc, and only about 4k in savings. Any smart moves I should be making with my money now that will help me later in life? Tips on setting up a passive income? Thank you so so so much!
1. Study to get a practical degree.  That means no communication or gender studies degree.   Even my hippie friends are forbidding their children from pursuing liberal arts degrees.  An art professor I have business with straight up tell his students they should not get an art degree but study business instead because if they are serious about being a professional artist then they will be entrepreneurs and need to know financial management.  So while you're in school take a course on investing or money management or accounting or economics or all of them.
2. Have an emergency fund that covers 3 to 6 months of living expenses: rent, food, and utlity.  Other people say it's 3 to 6 months of your salary.   I have 13 months emergency fund that my financial planner is trying to wean me off of because that much sitting in the bank is not growing money (Oprah used to paranoidly keep $50 million in savings that she called her bag lady fund in case her career implodes).  As a college student I'm assuming your expenses are already paid for - housing, meal plan, etc, that said, you should have at least $1,000 in your emergency fund so you're off to a very good start with your $4,000.
3. Track your spending by using a spreadsheet or anything on paper. Have all your expenses in it: food, rent, utility, phone contracts, utility, Netflix, Prime, etc.  Also have an area for income and all it’s sources (savings, job, stipends from your parents) and a total.  This starts to give you an idea of your income vs expenditures.  Use this to aid you in living beneath your means by living off of beans and rice that you buy in bulk and prepre meals yourself.  Avoid spending money on alcohol if you can, brew your own coffee.
4. If possible, NO student loans.  Apply for scholarships, grants, fellowships.
5. Get a part time paying job, whether during school or a summer internship.  From having an earned income you can open a Roth IRA account because though you may not have much money at your age, but what you do have is TIME.  Invest now for your retirement and it accumulates far faster when you start early than when you start later.  Read this New York Times “Roth IRAs for teenagers” article.
"A person who contributes the maximum to a Roth IRA beginning at age 19 will have accumulated $330,000 more than one who begins contributing at age 25, by the time each person is 67."
See that?  A 19 years old will have six more figures by the time he retires than the other guy who did the same thing 6 years later.
Tumblr media
You can open an IRA account with your bank, though they are more about saving your money than growing your moneny.  You can go with a brokerage  companies like Charles Schwab,  Fidelity, and Vanguard.
If you want to just put money in it and forget about it then use a Target Date Fund, you pick when you want to retire and it will re-allocate itself to become more conservative the closer you get to retirement.  Charles Schwab is probably the easist, here is there their target date funds.  You'll most likely want to use the SWYNX fund since you're so far away from retirement.  It's a pretty good way to get started if you're still learning or don't care to learn and just want to save for retirement.
If you want to be more hands-on, they have other mutual funds and you should consider building a portfolio out of low-cost index funds and exchange-traded fund (ETFs), this approach makes it easier to ensure adequate diversification in your portfolio and lower your investing risks and helps minimize the fees you’ll pay.
I usually don’t advice reddit for advices but here is a good beginner’s guide to IRA.
Reminder, it must be "earned income" in order to open a Roth IRA account, though that hasn't stopped a friend from opening a Roth IRA for his granddaughter who is four years old, naturally the problem is how to create her "earned income" status, and asked me if my former collegues would hire her as a model.  I can't fault him, it's best to open a Roth IRA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE because not only is it the best retirement plan now, but  it could get pulled at any time by the government.
To summerize:
Find a good job that pays well.
Cut down expenses, live within your means.
Destroy high interest debt as much as possible, ideally to have no bad debt
Invest and max out in tax efficiency retirement accounts, put rest into taxable accounts
Time, maintain #2 and #4 for decades
Retire with $1.5 to $3 million dollars to live the rest of your years in a comfortable middle class style
Noticed that I didn’t say that you retire wealthy even though you will have anywhere from $1.5 million to $3 million dollars.  That’s because those millions need to last you 20 to 30 years after you retire.  This is why I’ve said bonds, stocks, and indexes are for maintaining your wealth, it’s not a quick rich scheme.  Sure some people strike it rich with stocks but those are exceptions not the norm, like how lottery winners are rare.
Part II of Buildng your wealth: Real Estate.  For beginners like yourself I suggest this book “ How to Find, Buy, and Rent Houses for Wealth” , it’s sound and detailed without overcomplicating things.  It assumes the readers are looking at buying rental properties the "normal" way and not as a full time gig.  Next find a local mentor that already owns property in the area you would like to own. Real estate investment requires local insight and if you move into commercial investment, things are still very much word-of-mouth and referral-based.
If you’re serious about real estate as a full time gig then find the real estate investors club (REIC) in your area, people get together and throw ideas around, just be mindful that they are also your competition when it comes to buying a piece of property.
Until then you can listen to real estate podcast here to get a feel of the industry.

BOOK REVIEW: Fat Girl on a Plane by Kelly Devos
Big dreams come in all sizes, and Cookie Vonn isn't about to give up hers.
Title: Fat Girl on a Plane
Author: Kelly Devos
Published by: Harlequin
Publication Date: 05/06/18
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance,
Pages: 304
Format: ARC
Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Big dreams come in all sizes, and Cookie Vonn isn't about to give up hers.
High school senior Cookie Vonn's post–graduation dreams include getting out of Phoenix, attending Parsons School of Design, and becoming the next great fashion designer. But in the world of fashion, being fat is a cardinal sin – and Cookie weighs in at over three hundred pounds. It doesn't help that she's constantly compared to her supermodel mother – and named after a dessert.
Thanks to her work for a Scottsdale fashion blog, Cookie scores a trip to New York to meet her design idols – where she hopes to personally pitch her plus–size portfolio and appeal for a scholarship to Parsons . Her plans are put on standby when she's declared too fat too fly. Forced to turn to her BFF, Tommy, for cash, Cookie buys a second seat on the plane only to arrive in the city to find the blog is under new ownership. Cookie has been replaced by the boss's daughter, a girl who's everything she's not – ultra thin and super rich. Hurt and humiliated, she vows to lose weight, get out of the friend zone with Tommy, and put her life on track.
Fast–forward two years. Cookie has dropped the weight – and won the attention of designer–of–the–moment, Gareth Miller. He offers her what she's always wanted – an opportunity to live and study in New York. Cookie expected nothing but sunshine and rainbows. But not only is she stuck with the same old problems, she has a big choice to make: achieve her old dreams...or dream new ones.
Trigger Warnings: Fat-shaming, bullying, dieting,
Review:
I loved this beautiful book, I was completely enthralled with Cookie Vonn's story. Kelly Devos' debut novel was an engaging, funny, and important read. I went through all the emotions reading this book, I wanted to cry at the way Cookie was treated especially by her best friend, I also laughed and cheered many times. Fat Girl on a Plane is told in two timelines alternating each chapter between Fat and Skinny. I did think the alternating might take me out of the story, but it didn't at all. I also highly recommend reading the authors note before reading the book, as Kelly Devos explains why the book is set out that way.
Cookie Vonn is an intelligent, flawed, funny, beautiful, kind and talented main character. I loved following her journey of accepting who she is. Cookie's blog posts were such a great part of the story and her humor really came through. At times this book was tough to read as I have struggled with my own body image issues. Cookie dives into the fashion world head first and I loved reading about her unique and creative plus size designs. Also, Cookie's relationship with her Grandma was so great to read, I looked forward to the moments they shared. For me, the main message from this story is about accepting yourself and learning to love yourself just the way you are.
Overall, Fat Girl on a Plane is an important, engaging, wonderful contemporary story.
Thank you to Harlequin Australia for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

190. Someone told me once that to create true art you must be willing to bleed and let others watch. (with Jackcrutchie please? Also what ships are you okay with writing so we know which ones we should send in, if you dont mind me asking? )
[I’m comfortable writing pretty much anything! The only people I write together exclusively are Jack and Crutchie (I won’t write Javid or Crutchie/Spot, for example.) But other than that, send me whatever! This piece has a trigger warning. They is a little bit of talk of self harm. No graphic depictions or anything, but it’s there.]
190. Someone told me once that to create true art you must be willing to bleed and let others watch.
Art had always been Jack’sescape. The feeling of paper beneath his hands, watching his feelings come tolife on the page in front of him. Swirling colors together, putting them ontothe canvas. It was a comfort, a way to express the things that had happened tohim when he was young.
Jack hadn’t always beencalled Jack. When he was young, he had been called a different name, a wrongname. He had felt wrong too. His mom had made it better. She didn’t care whathe wanted to be called. She called him Jack and she loved him so much, givinghim crayons to express himself. Everything changed when she died. Suddenly hewas Jessica again and his mommy was gone. He felt wrong again. The dresses hisfoster families forced him into, the name they called him, the pronouns theyused, it was all wrong and horrible. He lashed out, he was angry at the world. Therewas one family that was worse than the others. They were sugary sweet when hissocial worker was around, but when she left they were horrible. They made himgo to ‘counseling’ which was really just their pastor telling Jack that if hedidn’t stop pretending he was a boy, he would go to Hell. They forced him towear dresses and skirts every day. The worst thing they did, however, was takeaway his art. He wasn’t allowed anything that could write in his room. If hehad homework, he had to do it sitting at the kitchen table. He turned tounhealthy ways of coping. The scars that remained on his arms and legs wereevidence of this. When his social worker found out, she went ballistic. She gotJack out of that house and he was placed in a new home, his forever home.
Medda’s house was sodifferent. The first day he arrived, he knew that within minutes of walkingthrough the door. Jack had his own room, to start. His desk was the highlight. It had art supplies on it. Not a ton, just colored pencils and charcoal. But itwas so much more than he had been able to have in years. He started high schooland he was able to enroll in Drawing and Painting. It was life changing. Histeacher was amazing, he encouraged Jack in everything he did. He pushed him tobecome a better artist. When Jack set his sights on the Rhode Island School ofDesign, he half expected his teacher to laugh at him. Instead, he helped Jackdevelop his portfolio.
“Art,” Mr. Denton toldJack, “is being willing to bleed and let others watch.”
Jack took those words toheart. He drew what had happened to him all those years ago, reopening woundsthat had scabbed over long ago. He drew faint memories of his mother, based onthe few pictures he had left of her. He drew his world during the time he hadn’tbeen able to draw. He was accepted on a full scholarship. Those four yearschanged Jack. He saw art differently after it and he did art differently. Hecould see more than just the shapes and lines that made up a piece. He couldsee the unbridled emotion, the pain, the joy that went into each piece. Hisemotions fueled his art, pushing him to do better, to share in an intimate withpeople what had happened to him. That didn’t pan out as a career at first. Hehad no idea what to do with his degree after he graduated. He did politicalcartoons for an online magazine, took commissions online, and worked other oddjobs. The starving artist was a reality for him, there were many days when allhe could have to eat was a package of ramen. When a gallery contacted him aboutshowcasing his pieces, he was floored. A professor had recommended him. So hehad gotten to work. He only had half the amount of drawings he needed and onlya quarter of the paintings. His first opening was nothing less than a success. He sold all his paintings and nearly all his drawings. After that, itsnowballed. More galleries wanted to show his work and more people wanted to buyit. He was a success, in almost everyone’s eyes. He didn’t have to work oddjobs to make ends meet, he moved into a better apartment, he didn’t have to worryabout going hungry.
It was four years afterhe graduated college that Jack’s life turned upside down. It was a galleryopening, full of stuffy people that Jack couldn’t stand. He had to wear a suit, which made him uncomfortable. He was never good at this side of things. Hisstudio, in paint covered clothes, that’s where he shined. He stood in thecorner, nursing some drink probably worth more than Jack’s entire outfit. Hewent back out to mingle after a moment, tugging on his tie gently.
“Wouldn’t do that if Iwere you. People will think you don’t belong.” A voice said behind him, lightand teasing.
Jack turned, searchingfor the source. His eyes landed on a sandy haired man that looked to be aroundthe same age as him, dressed far too casually to be a guest. He was wearing agrey blazer with a white t shirt underneath, along with jeans and a pair ofconverse. Jack noticed the camera, then the press badge around his neck. Aphotographer. “Maybe I don’t. Maybe I snuck in.”
The man laughed. “Consideringthat your signature is on the corner of all the paintings, I highly doubt it.”He held his hand out. “Charlie Morris, but you can call me Crutchie.” It was onlythen that Jack noticed the silver crutch tucked under his arm. The man-Crutchie- grinned. “You’re wondering if it’s demeaning. Yes, but it’s betterthan having people call me it behind my back.”
Jack nodded slowly. “Makessense. How did you recognize me, Crutchie?”
Crutchie shrugged. “I’vebeen to a couple of your gallery openings before. I’m a fan.”
Jack nodded again and glancedat the time. There was still an hour and a half before he got to make his exit.He looked around the room, observing the people. Most were rich, boring snobsonly there because they wanted to appear cultured. There was the occasionalcollege student, some obviously forced there by a professor but also some wholooked genuinely interested in the art. It was always an interesting blend ofpeople at these things, people from totally separate worlds colliding over onecommon thing. He heard the click of a camera and turned back to Crutchie.
Crutchie shrugged. “Sorry,it’s my job. My editor would kill me if I didn’t come back with at least onegood shot of you, considering I’ve been to three of your openings and gottennone.”
Jack nodded again, takinga sip of his drink. “No worries.” He sat down on one of the benches, pattingthe space beside him. “Want to interview me too?”
Crutchie sat down, shakinghis head with a laugh. “No, not that type of reporter. I’d rather capture themoment in a picture than in words.”
Jack looked over. “That’s…oddlybeautiful.”
Crutchie grinned. “I’vegot a knack for oddly beautiful.” He snapped a picture of the crowd gathered infront of one painting. It was one of Jack’s favorites. It depicted the sunsetting over the city of Santa Fe. Jack had traveled there the previous yearand loved it. The air felt cleaner, the people were friendly. It was sodifferent from New York, with its constant hustle and bustle. He loved the citybut he often wondered what it would be like to live somewhere else, somewherecalm. The rest of the night passed much like that, Jack and Crutchie makingidle chatter while Crutchie took pictures of the art, the people, and Jack. Atthe end of the night, Jack felt slightly disappointed. Usually he tried tosneak out early but he stayed until the end, Crutchie making the time passquickly.
“Thanks. Tonight wasactually fun.” Jack said as they collected their coats. “Crutchie…can I getyour number? Maybe we could get a cup of coffee or something.”
Crutchie grinned. “Thoughtyou’d never ask.” They exchanged numbers and went their separate ways. Thatnight, Jack began a new piece. It was a depiction of two men standing closetogether, all while a crowd swirled around them.
One coffee date turnedinto two and then three and then they turned into dinner dates until finally, almost two months later, Jack asked Crutchie to be his boyfriend. They werelaying on Jack’s couch one night, Jack nearly asleep. Crutchie was staring athis laptop, looking at something quite intently. Jack didn’t know what. Hishead was pillowed against Crutchie’s chest, curled between the other man’slegs.
“Jack?” Crutchie’s voicebroke the silence, one hand stroking through Jack’s dark hair gently. “Can Iask you something?”
“Mhm…” Jack mumbled, pressing his lips to Crutchie’s neck.
“I…I’m looking at yourpaintings.” Crutchie bit his lip. “Why are some of them so…dark?”
Jack sat up then, lookingat Crutchie’s laptop. One of his older paintings was on the screen. A youngboy, trying to climb out of a hole while dark hands pulled him down. He wincedslightly. He hadn’t told Crutchie anything about his past, not really. He knewJack was adopted and that he was transgender, but that was the extent of it. Jacktook a deep breath, trying to figure out how much he should say.
“Someone told me oncethat to create true art you must be willing to bleed and let others watch. I…Iwas four when my mom died.” Jack began. “She was a good mom, Crutchie. She didn’tcare when I said I was a boy, she encouraged me even. She called me Jack. She lovedme. When she died, I was too young to really understand. I just knew that shewas gone and I had to live with other people. People who weren’t as nice aboutthings. They called me Jessica and made me wear dresses and stuff. That wasmost of my foster families, I went through quite a few. The worst was when Iwas twelve. They…They made me go to therapy, which was just their stupid pastortelling me that if I didn’t stop my ‘sinning ways’ I’d go to Hell. They made mego to their church every Sunday and I had to wear dresses and skirts to schoolevery day. The mom did my hair with these stupid bows and she put makeup on me.They…They took away my art. I wasn’t even allowed to doodle. If I did, I wasgrounded for a week. They thought that art was driving me away from God. So…Istarted hurting myself. That went on for about a year. My social worker foundout and she got me out. That’s when I went to live with Mom.” His voice wasshaking slightly, he had sat up fully and his head was bent, staring at theground with his hands clasped in front of him. It was easier than looking atCrutchie.
“When I started schoolafter I went to live with Mom, I got to take art classes. The art teacher wasamazing. Mr. Denton. He cared about me. He’s the entire reason I kept doingart, he’s the reason I got into school. Without him, I wouldn’t be who I amtoday. He’s the one who told me that I had to use my pain in my art. That’s whysome of my stuff is so dark. That pain, I…I have to try and expose it. Everytime I draw or paint or anything, I have to try.” Tears were swimming in hiseyes, he tried to hold them back.
Crutchie was silent for amoment. He slowly set his laptop on the coffee table, then wrapped his armsaround Jack. “Jack…”
“I’m sorry.” Jack mumbled. He pulled away and wiped his eyes. “I shouldn’t have laid all that on you.”
“Jack, I’m yourboyfriend. I’ve laid plenty on you.” Crutchie brought his hand up and wipedJack’s eyes carefully. “That’s what I’m here for.” He kissed Jack softly then, pulling him closer. “I love you.”
Jack froze. They had beendating for three months and hadn’t yet said those words. Jack knew though thathe loved Crutchie. On a certain level he thought that maybe he had fallen inlove with Crutchie that first night, at the gallery opening. “I love you too.”He murmured, turning and kissing Crutchie more firmly. He clung to Crutchie, the only person he had expressed to in words everything that he tried to say inhis art.
Over the next  few years, artcritics and fans would debate a change in Jack Kelly’s style. It was lighter, happier. The colors were more vibrant. It was a subtle shift, something thathappened over a long period of time. Most people liked it, some didn’t. Jack couldn’t care less either way. Theyall seemed to agree that Jack’s change seemed centered on a person, a blonde man whofeatured in his sketches and paintings often.

Eight year old soccer players with agent | sports
According to the Real Madrid website, which signed him in 2013, P. “is a physical portent that overflows the band thanks to his speed and his vision of the game, and that in one against one he always wins.” P. is twelve years old and plays in children's games. In televised children's tournaments he has been seen celebrating goals unbecoming of his age and attending to the press with the speech he learned at the end of his games. In the Valdebebas residence, where he lives with 70 and so many promises of football and basketball, P. boasted last May, to the amazement of his colleagues, of “having a resolved life”. “Just by doing like that (a snap of the fingers) the bills will fall.”
Q. You don't need to pack your bag to go training. A utility man leaves it ready. His team and all those in the lower categories of Madrid have their own changing rooms at the Ciudad Deportiva, where the different fields are distributed on a ladder as a metaphor for effort and sacrifice. Above all is the goal, where the first team trains.
Almost none arrive. Neither Real Madrid, nor the elite of soccer. That is explained with statistics in hand by the psychologists and educators of Real Madrid to their youth squads: in Spain there are 700,000 soccer chips and only about 400 reach the First or Second Division. One in 5,000. But these formative talks may sound like science fiction to teenagers sponsored by sportswear multinationals with official Facebook page who have become heroes of their schools.
Valencia refuses to deal with agents under the age of 16
The case of P. is common in the quarries of large teams. It does not matter whether it is Valdebebas or La Masía del Barça, sanctioned without being able to sign during two periods of transfers for bringing foreign children in breach of FIFA regulations. The giants of the League pamper them from prebenjamines (eight years old) while they look at the competition to steal from the best. At the age of eleven or twelve, some already have intermediaries, each year they sign that they discard the following year to make room for new values. The sports press celebrates the landing of tweens, who they call “cracks” or “area killers.” Almost everyone ends up getting lost on the way to the elite and broken toys abound.
Xabi Alonso's legacy to Antiguoko
The modest quarry clubs dream of being the Antiguooko, a San Sebastián club with 10 teams and 93 members that in recent years has entered millions of dollars. Training Xabi Alonso as a footballer has earned him more than a million and a half euros. And the club continues to score many years after the San Sebastian midfielder stepped on the pitch there the last time. Basque managers were stunned this summer when their lawyer warned them that Bayern Munich should pay him 26,000 euros for winning the Bundesliga.
The key to Antiguoko is in the contracts that the club signed in its day with the Royal Society, where, in addition to the training rights that correspond to it by international regulations (5% of the amount of transfers between Leagues), Antiguoko is guaranteed an additional 10% (with a ceiling of 600,000 euros) on future transfers to other clubs. Alonso traveled from Real Sociedad to Liverpool and from this to Real Madrid, from where he left for Bayer. Of all those signings took a pinch the Antiguooko, who now waits for the Guardiola team to win the Champions League. It would be another extra income for the entity from San Sebastian, with an annual budget of 150,000 euros, which has not gone into madness. The pride of the club is a 400-square-meter venue with offices, foosball, and video games for their kids to spend the afternoon.
The directive works these days to build another artificial grass field and continue lighting figures. Soccer players such as Iraola, Aduriz or De Pedro have come out of its facilities. The first with whom he really made a box was Arteta, today Arsenal midfielder, when he left Barça to join the Scottish Glasgow Rangers. So, the tip for the Antiguooko was 900,000 euros.
“Not only does the club pamper them, but also journalists when they talk about pearls, stars, the new Messi. Expectations are generated that are not real. And most do not arrive. It does not happen suddenly, the transfers to other clubs begin, the discards … ”Ginés Carvajal, who has been in the business for 35 years and has led the career of legends such as Raúl, Casillas, Morientes, or Víctor Valdés, tells it. “There are some with a representative, but at eleven years old one cannot know if a child is going to be a soccer player. You can do different things with the ball, but nothing else. The problem is that you have to go to younger players every time to find one without an agent. For me it would be much better to wait until they turn 18, we would be much more correct. But the system is thus assembled. I tell the parents that at 12 years old, no representative is needed and I leave my card for when they need it. I usually work with children ages 14 and 15 because at 16 they can already sign professional contracts. ”
Carvajal advocates that families get advice so they can move in a complex and interest-filled world, where signing a form at age 16 ties a teenager to a club for five seasons without compensation.
The guild of agents usually invokes the story of Raúl Baena, now a Rayo Vallecano player. Baena's parents signed a pre-contract with Barça in 2002 when he was thirteen – up to the age of 16 no minor can sign a professional contract – for 10 seasons. When he decided to leave for Espanyol, Barcelona demanded the agreed compensation: 3.5 million euros. The case reached the Supreme Court, which declared the contract void, alleging that Baena's parents went too far in signing that clause since their “power of representation” did not entitle them to commit it for so many years. The Supreme Court reduced the compensation that Baena had to pay the Barça up to 30,000 euros.
In addition, there is the relationship with trademarks, one of the claims that intermediaries use with footballers. To those who stand out the most, the multinationals offer advertising contracts to show off their sportswear. Adidas, the official sponsor of Madrid, tried unsuccessfully a few years ago to get all the youth players to put on their boots. It was impossible because many of the minors had agreements with Nike. In exchange for these contracts, the multinationals supply sports clothing for 6,000, 8,000, 10,000 euros per year to teenagers and their families so that future stars can pose with it. The fine print of these sponsorships establishes, in some cases, millionaire clauses, if the kids decide to break with the brand.
“I wish we all waited at 18, says the manager of Raúl and Víctor Valdés”
Carvajal, who today represents some of the most projected international youth such as Deulofeu, Jesse and Alberto Bueno, highlights the importance of parents, who often want to retire at the expense of their children's soccer.
Pedro Bravo, president of the Spanish Association of Soccer Players Agents, underpins this opinion with his own experience: “A year ago, the principal of a school called me to talk to me about how good his son was. I asked him how old he was and he said he was six years old. I recommended that you let your son be happy. ” In Bravo's portfolio there are about 60 kids from different clubs. The agent neither pays nor charges them, although he does give everyone a pair of boots for Christmas.
Valencia, by decision of its former president Amadeo Salvo, this season prohibited intermediaries from accessing children's training. The club assures that it will not deal with any agent who claims to represent minors under the age of 15. “Every time they tried to capture younger children. In teams of eight or nine years old, attitudes that were against companionship were taking place, with a growing egoism of the children. Whoever has a representative receives the Play Station or Ronaldo's boots. We have decided to subtract influence from the agents. We do not receive any if the player is under 16 years of age, ”says an official spokesman for Valencia.
Bravo, in his personal capacity, understands that the representatives “and also the parents” are prohibited from accessing the training of the quarries, but he wonders how the legal right to advise a family can be prevented. And he asks to wait for a budding 15-year-old star to arrive from the hand of an intermediary to see if Valencia ends up carrying out his threat.

Villarreal has a reputation for being one of the midfielders who best works the quarry: it is the third Spanish club with more internationals in lower categories. Its facilities where 650 kids train are open to everyone. There, soccer begins at the age of three, with psychomotor classes. The city, with a census of 50,755 inhabitants, cannot supply all categories of footballers. Like most teams, it is supplied with catchment clubs in its surroundings while its scouts comb other provinces. The best come to the club on scholarships thanks to signings or agreements with other teams.
Figures vary from team to team. The Royal Society, for example, pays the clubs with which it has an agreement 600 euros for a child (13 years old), 1,500 euros for a cadet, and 3,000 for the transfer of a youth.
Real Madrid maintains collaboration contracts with amateur clubs that establish payments in kind: 100 balls a year for having preference in the selection of footballers and 25 more balls for each fry or child that is brought to Valdebebas. From there the money comes in and depends on each player. Norwegian Martin Odergard, arrived in the middle of the season at Castilla with a crack card, receives a one-million-euro tab at age 16. Halilovic, the star of the Barça quarry, enjoys similar privileges. Either one is still far from the first team. Much lower down, highlights Pipi, a Japanese midfielder of 11 years and 35 kilos, whose filigree in a match against Barça flood the YouTube videos, and whom the digital newspapers baptized as the Messi of the future.
youtube
The goalkeeper José Luis García Pozuelo signed with nine years for the prebenjamín B of Madrid. He spent five years in the sports city and at 14 they told him that they did not have him. “It is hard to overcome it, you are in the best team in the world, they treat you as if you were First Division. It impresses everything, the fields, the balls, the trips and one day you see yourself outside. My parents told me that football did not end there. ” He went to Alcobendas, he decided to work harder. Two years later another call came from Madrid, for youth C. “They told me they were wrong, I received a salary of 300 euros like the rest of the team,” he recalls. A season passed in which he barely played and he saw himself outside Valdebebas again: “I hardly had any opportunities, but I would return to Madrid, there with the best coaches you grow as a player and as a person”. Since then, he has passed through the youth teams of Elche and Getafe. Today he is waiting for his agent to find him a goal. He is 19 years old, he has not finished ESO but neither does he lose the illusion of returning to the elite. His snap of fingers does not drop bills. He settles for a Third party club that pays him 300 euros a month. Let it serve to make the jump and continue on the wheel.

Read Fiona Hill’s Opening Statement https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/11/21/us/politics/fiona-hill-opening-statement-ukraine.html
Dr. Fiona Hill's opening statement in powerful in 2 ways: 1)She tells a powerful immigrant story growing up poor, using her knowledge, education and opportunities to rise and 2)She dispels the Republican hoax that is being propagated by Russia that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election. Read her full statement below, it's well worth the time.

Opening Statement
Published Nov. 21, 2019 | New York Times | Posted November 21, 2019 |
Fiona Hill, President Trump’s former top adviser on Russia and Europe, testified to the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday. Ms. Hill had a front-row seat to dramatic events in the White House around the pressure campaign on Ukraine. The following are her prepared remarks.
See Original Document
See Original Document
See Original Document
I was hired initially by General Michael 4

See Original Document
See Original Document
But we must not let domestic politics stop us from defending ourselves against the foreign powers who truly wish us harm.
I am ready to answer your questions. 7

Fiona Hill Viewed Serving Trump as Risky. Now She’s an Impeachment Witness.
Ms. Hill’s decision to be the president’s top adviser on Russia and Europe strained friendships, made her a target of conspiracy theories — and landed her in the center of the tumult over Ukraine.

WASHINGTON — Fiona Hill knew she was taking a risk in going to work for President Trump.
A British-born coal-miner’s daughter with a Ph.D. from Harvard, Ms. Hill is a respected Russia expert, former intelligence analyst and co-author of a 500-page book analyzing the psyche of its president, Vladimir V. Putin. So the prospect of working for a president who speaks admiringly of Mr. Putin and has expressed doubts that Russia interfered in the 2016 election gave her pause.
Her decision to join the National Security Council in April 2017 — and to stay for more than two years after Mr. Trump cozied up to Mr. Putin and publicly disparaged the nation’s intelligence agencies — strained friendships and made her a target of right-wing conspiracy theorists who spread rumors that she was a Democratic mole.
Now, it has landed her near the center of the impeachment inquiry into whether Mr. Trump abused his power to enlist a foreign leader to help him in the 2020 presidential election. Her planned appearance before the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday represents the fulfillment of Ms. Hill’s worst fears about what could happen if she swallowed her reservations and went to work for Mr. Trump.
“The risk was what we see playing out in front of us — that something wrong would happen, that she would do the right thing and other people wouldn’t, and there would be a reckoning,” said Tom Wright, a former colleague and friend of Ms. Hill’s. “And afterward there could be hearings — with, at worst case, the fate of the presidency riding on it.”
On Thursday, Ms. Hill will take her turn as the latest in a series of witnesses to testify publicly before Congress. Many have been nonpartisan diplomats and national security experts who went to work for the president thinking they might be the proverbial “adults in the room” checking Mr. Trump’s impulses, only to find themselves caught up in a mess of his making, and in danger of being attacked.
In closed-door testimony, Ms. Hill called her gripping account “my worst nightmare.” In it, she revealed how she and her boss at the time, John R. Bolton, the former White House national security adviser, were alarmed at a rogue effort by allies of Mr. Trump, led by his personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, to deliver on the president’s desire for Ukraine to announce investigations into his political rivals.
In testimony on Wednesday, one of those allies — Gordon D. Sondland, a Trump megadonor turned ambassador to the European Union — turned on the president and top administration officials. He told lawmakers that he was only doing Mr. Trump’s bidding in pressing Ukraine for the investigations, and that Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Mick Mulvaney, the acting chief of staff, were among those well aware of it.
In Mr. Sondland’s telling during a private interview with impeachment investigators last month, Ms. Hill was furious to the point of shaking when he stopped by her office to say goodbye to her before she left the White House, about a week before the now-infamous July 25 telephone call in which Mr. Trump pressed President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his son Hunter. (Ms. Hill had argued against the call, saying she did not understand its purpose.)
“She was pretty upset about her role in the administration, about her superiors, about the president,” Mr. Sondland recalled in a closed-door deposition. “She was sort of shaking. She was pretty mad.”
A lawyer for Ms. Hill, Lee Wolosky, has disputed that characterization, writing on Twitter that Mr. Sondland “fabricated communications with Dr. Hill.”
Ms. Hill is neither pro-Trump nor a “Never Trumper,” and she was always circumspect in talking about Mr. Trump, friends said. She refused speaking invitations of the sort that would be routine for top advisers in past administrations — even at the Brookings Institution, where she was on leave as director of the Center on the United States and Europe.
But her own closed-door testimony reveals how fraught her time in the administration was.
In it, she described a tense White House meeting with Mr. Sondland, Mr. Bolton, Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Ukrainian officials in which it became apparent that Mr. Mulvaney was working with Mr. Sondland and Mr. Giuliani to execute the president’s plan.
Ms. Hill described her horror that the Ukrainians — foreign nationals — were hanging around the West Wing, outside the Situation Room, one of the most secure and sensitive spots in the White House. When Mr. Sondland moved the meeting down to a room in the White House basement, Mr. Bolton instructed her to follow them to find out what was going on.
She did so, and confronted Mr. Sondland, cutting him off when he dangled the prospect of a White House meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky.
“It has to go through proper procedure,” Ms. Hill insisted. Then she reported back to Mr. Bolton, who told her to report it to the National Security Council’s top lawyer, John A. Eisenberg
“You go and tell Eisenberg that I am not part of whatever drug deal Sondland and Mulvaney are cooking up on this,” she recalled Mr. Bolton saying.
Friends said that sounded like the Ms. Hill they know: straight, to the point, unafraid to push back.
“Fiona has served impeccably in the executive branch,” said Strobe Talbott, the former president of the Brookings Institution, “and, now, she’s helping Congress understand the disaster Trump has visited on the country and the world.”
Republicans view her as suspect because she worked with Christopher Steele, who later wrote an infamous dossier on Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia, when she was an intelligence officer and he was her British counterpart. And her time as an unpaid adviser to the Central Eurasia Project of the Open Society Foundation, founded by the Democratic philanthropist George Soros, fueled rumors spread by the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.
“My entire first year of my tenure at the National Security Council was filled with hateful calls, conspiracy theories, which has started again,” she told House investigators, saying her attackers accused her “of being a Soros mole in the White House, of colluding with all kinds of enemies of the president.”
Ms. Hill, 54, had an unusual path to academia. The daughter of a coal miner and a midwife, she had a hardscrabble childhood in northeast England — a childhood that bred toughness, her friends say. Once, when she was 11, a boy in her class set one of her pigtails on fire while she was taking a test. She put the fire out with her hands, and finished the test.
She learned to speak Russian and eventually made her way across the Atlantic to Harvard for a fellowship, where she studied under the scholar Richard Pipes, known for his hard-line views about what was then the Soviet Union.
Ms. Hill’s own views are more nuanced, friends and colleagues say; she is not so much a Russia hawk as a cleareyed realist. She was also very clear about the threat Russia posed to Ukraine.
“She comes from this realist tradition where you start with the proposition that this other actor is capable of killing me,” said Graham Allison, a Harvard political scientist who worked with Ms. Hill on an initiative to teach foreign governments about democracy. “I can’t figure out how to kill them without committing suicide, so now I have to find a way to live with them.”
In 2006, Ms. Hill joined the National Intelligence Council as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia, a job that required her to assess the Russian threat. In 2009, she rejoined Brookings, where she had previously been a fellow. In 2013, she and Clifford Gaddy published “Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin.”
“She confirmed what I thought, which is what I’ve said very publicly for a long time: He’s the most dangerous guy on Earth,” said Adm. Mike Mullen, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who got to know Ms. Hill when she was an intelligence analyst.
Yet for all of her scholarly work, it was an appearance on television that landed Ms. Hill her White House job. After Mr. Trump was elected, K.T. McFarland, a Fox News commentator, recommended her to Gen. Michael T. Flynn, Mr. Trump’s first national security adviser.
General Flynn, whose tenure ended in scandal after 24 days, offered her the job as the National Security Council’s senior director for Europe and Russia, though she came on after he left. Some friends warned her against it. Among them was Marvin Kalb, a senior fellow at Brookings, who thought Ms. Hill might have trouble in part because she was an immigrant.
“I was concerned that she might run into problems that others might not run into, and I thought that her judgment of Putin might not sit well with the president,” he said, adding: “My recommendation to her was to stay away. But she believed very strongly in the opportunity to serve.”
She got off to an uncertain start; Mr. Trump once mistook her for a low-level member of support staff. And if there was any doubt that the president had little interest in national security protocol and would rely on no one but himself, it was erased when he took notes away from his interpreter during a private meeting with Mr. Putin in Hamburg, Germany, in 2017.
Then came the disastrous Helsinki, Finland, summit in 2018, where Mr. Trump accepted the Russian president’s denial that his country had interfered in the 2016 race. In a stunning break with protocol, he also told Mr. Putin that he might let Russia interrogate a former American ambassador, Michael A. McFaul, a staunch critic of Russia’s record on human rights.
Mr. McFaul visited her at the White House to complain.
“I thought they were going to clean it up when they got back to Washington, and they didn’t,” Mr. McFaul said. “They just doubled down.”
Some colleagues of Ms. Hill’s wondered why she did not quit then. Others, like Angela Stent, a Russia expert at Georgetown University and mentor to Ms. Hill, said she contemplated leaving at times, but stayed because she wanted “to minimize the damage of some things that were happening with Russia.”
When she left the White House in July, it was as planned; she wanted to spend more time with her husband and 12-year-old daughter and her mother, who is ill. If she had been frustrated there, Mr. Wright said, she kept it to herself.
“This exit was not what she had planned,” Mr. Wright said. “I don’t think she was thinking, ‘I’m going to go out in a blaze of glory, take a moral stand and testify.’ That was definitely not her intention. She just wanted to do her job with no fuss or drama.”

Impeachment Inquiry Live Updates: Fiona Hill Denounces ‘Fictional’ Claim of Ukraine Meddling in 2016
The former top Europe and Russia expert at the National Security Council denounced the “false narrative” promoted by President Trump and Republicans that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election, calling it a dangerous story planted by Russia that plays into Moscow’s hands. A senior embassy official in Kyiv testified that his “clear impression” was that Mr. Trump froze security aid to push Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.

The House Intelligence Committee has taken a break before Republicans begin questioning the witnesses.
Here’s what you need to know:
Hill denounces ‘fictional’ claim that Ukraine meddled in 2016 election, saying it plays into Russia’s hands.
Fiona Hill, the former top Russia expert on the National Security Council, criticized Republicans on Thursday for propagating what she called a “fictional narrative” that Ukraine, not Russia, meddled in the 2016 elections, denouncing a theory embraced by President Trump.
She argued that the story was planted by Russia and dangerously played into Moscow’s hands, by sowing political divisions in the United States that adversaries are eager to exploit.
“These fictions are harmful even if they are deployed for purely domestic political purposes,” said Ms. Hill, the co-author of a 500-page book analyzing the psyche of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.
“President Putin and the Russian security services operate like a super PAC,” Ms. Hill explained. “They deploy millions of dollars to weaponize our own political opposition research and false narratives. When we are consumed by partisan rancor, we cannot combat these external forces as they seek to divide us against each another, degrade our institutions, and destroy the faith of the American people in our democracy.
The impeachment inquiry centers on the accusation that Mr. Trump withheld a White House visit for Ukraine’s president and security aid for the country as leverage to push the government to announce investigations into former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., and the claim that Ukraine conspired to help Democrats in the 2016 election.
Ms. Hill called the claim about Ukraine’s interference a fake story invented by Russian intelligence services to destabilize the United States and deflect attention from their own culpability.
“In the course of this investigation, I would ask that you please not promote politically driven falsehoods that so clearly advance Russian interests,” Ms. Hill said. “These fictions are harmful even if they are deployed for purely domestic political purposes.”
Without naming Mr. Trump, Ms. Hill made an implicit rebuke of his conduct.
“If the president, or anyone else, impedes or subverts the national security of the United States in order to further domestic political or personal interests, that is more than worthy of your attention,” Ms. Hill said. “But we must not let domestic politics stop us from defending ourselves against the foreign powers who truly wish us harm.”
Holmes: ‘Clear impression’ that Trump withheld security aid to pressure Ukraine to investigate Biden.
David Holmes, a top aide in the United States Embassy in Kyiv, told lawmakers on Thursday that he became convinced by the end of August that Mr. Trump had frozen security aid for Ukraine because he was seeking to pressure the country to commit to an investigation into Mr. Biden.
Mr. Holmes said his assessment came after he drafted and sent a cable to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on behalf of William B. Taylor Jr., the top American diplomat in Ukraine, attempting to explain the importance of the security assistance to Ukraine.
“By this point,” Mr. Holmes said, “my clear impression was that the security assistance hold was likely intended by the president either as an expression of dissatisfaction with the Ukrainians who had not yet agreed to the Burisma/Biden investigation or as an effort to increase the pressure on them to do so.”
Burisma is a Ukrainian energy company that employed Hunter Biden, the former vice president’s son, on its board.
Mr. Holmes told lawmakers that it remains critical for the United States to support Ukraine in its efforts to confront Russian aggression, saying: “Now is not the time to retreat from our relationship with Ukraine, but rather to double down on it.”
President Trump lashed out on Twitter, casting doubt on Holmes’ account of an overheard phone call.
Mr. Holmes began testifying, President Trump took aim at his credibility, suggesting there was no way he could have heard what he claims to have picked up in a loud cellphone conversation between Mr. Trump and Gordon D. Sondland, the ambassador to the European Union.
In his testimony on Thursday, Mr. Holmes was repeating an account he has given impeachment investigators privately of a call he overheard in which the president was asking Mr. Sondland whether Ukraine was going to do the investigations he wanted, and Mr. Sondland said they were.
The call is an important piece of evidence because it demonstrates that Mr. Trump himself was directing members of his administration to push the Ukrainians for the investigations, but the president on Thursday sought to cast doubt on its authenticity.

I have been watching people making phone calls my entire life. My hearing is, and has been, great. Never have I been watching a person making a call, which was not on speakerphone, and been able to hear or understand a conversation. I’ve even tried, but to no avail. Try it live!

Even before the day’s hearing began, the president posted a string of angry tweets about Democrats and the impeachment investigation.
The Democrats leading the impeachment investigation are “human scum,” he said.
The public hearings over the last week are “the most unfair hearings in American History.” And, “never in my wildest dreams” did he think his name would be linked to the “ugly word, Impeachment!”

I never in my wildest dreams thought my name would in any way be associated with the ugly word, Impeachment! The calls (Transcripts) were PERFECT, there was NOTHING said that was wrong. No pressure on Ukraine. Great corruption & dishonesty by Schiff on the other side!

Mr. Trump also revived his complaints about the special counsel investigation into whether his campaign or aides were involved in Russia’s election interference.
An embassy official who overheard Trump and Sondland is testifying about a memorable phone call.
Mr. Holmes is testifying a week after Mr. Taylor, the top American diplomat in Ukraine, told lawmakers last week that he had recently become aware of a July cellphone call between Mr. Trump and Mr. Sondland that had been overheard by one of his aides.
Mr. Holmes told lawmakers that he could hear Mr. Trump, who was speaking loudly, asking Mr. Sondland whether Mr. Zelensky was “going to do the investigation.” Mr. Sondland told Mr. Trump that Mr. Zelensky “loves your ass,” and would conduct the investigation and do “anything you ask him to,” Mr. Holmes said.
In Mr. Holmes’s account, Mr. Sondland later told him that Mr. Trump cared only about “big stuff that benefits the president” like the “Biden investigation.” Mr. Sondland did not dispute that account when he testified on Wednesday, but said he did not recall specifically mentioning Mr. Biden.
Democrats believe the conversation helps establish that the president was preoccupied with persuading Ukraine to publicly commit to investigations that benefited him politically.
Hill detailed how Bolton saw Giuliani as a ‘hand grenade’ meddling in Ukraine policy.
In previous closed-door testimony, Ms. Hill described in detail a July 10 White House meeting during which Gordon D. Sondland, the ambassador to the European Union, told Mr. Bolton that he was working with Mr. Giuliani to press Ukraine to investigate Democrats in exchange for a White House meeting for the country’s new president.
Mr. Bolton was so disturbed that he abruptly ended the meeting and instructed Ms. Hill to tell the National Security Council’s top lawyer about what Mr. Sondland, Mr. Giuliani and Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, were up to, Ms. Hill has testified. Mr. Bolton told Ms. Hill that he was not “part of whatever drug deal Sondland and Mulvaney are cooking up.”
Later, Ms. Hill said that Mr. Bolton told her that “Giuliani’s a hand grenade who’s going to blow everybody up.”
Ms. Hill left the White House before the July 25 call between Mr. Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. But Democrats believe her account could be crucial in helping to establish that top White House officials like Mr. Bolton felt the pressure campaign was inappropriate, and that Mr. Mulvaney was deeply involved in it.
Mr. Sondland said in Wednesday’s hearing that Ms. Hill’s account of the July 10 meeting did not “square with my own.”

3 Questions: The fact finders
When publication such as U.S. News and World Report roll out their annual university rankings, typically with MIT among the top schools listed, some may wonder where the data they’re based on actually come from.
The source of that information is MIT Instituational Research, which collects and compiles data on many facets of the Institute, or, as Director Lydia Snover puts it, on MIT’s “people, money, and space.” The Institutional Research (IR) website is a wonderland of data that tells the story of MIT’s evolution over recent decades. There are surveys of faculty, graduate students, undergraduates — and even undergraduates’ parents. Users can also take a deep dive into the demographics of different subsets of the MIT community and peruse financial figures on research expenditures, tuition, and more.
Public universities have been providing this kind of information for decades to state and federal agencies that fund them. It’s unusual for a private university such as MIT to have such a robust IR operation and to share so much of its data publicly, but Snover has long been a leader in the field of IR at the national, and even international, level. She was recently awarded the John Stecklein Distinguished Member Award from the Association for Institutional Research, for advancing the field of institutional research through extraordinary scholarship, leadership, and service.
MIT News caught up with Snover to talk about IR at MIT, her philosophy about transparency, and why she’s a fan of the Institute’s data warehouse.
Q: What are the main types of data that your office collects, and what are they used for?
A: We bring together data from lots of different operational areas at MIT — including human resources, the registrar, admissions, and facilities, to name just a few — to simplify it in some ways and create metrics that can be used by departments, labs, and centers to help them meet their goals.
We complete all information requests for university rankings, guidebooks, and various consortiums. We also administer surveys for organizations like the Consortium for Financing of Higher Education as well as some of our other peer institutions. The majority of surveys we administer are just for the MIT community, or subsets of it. We administer over 100 surveys a year. We support the accreditation process and assist when asked with grant applications.
We provide reports for department heads in preparation for meetings with the Corporation’s visiting committees. We’ll put together a 10-year profile that includes department-level trends in staffing, retention, enrollment, sponsored research expenditures, how graduate students are being funded, things like that. We can compare those numbers within MIT and for a subset of metrics with other peer institutions.
People like to talk about making data-driven decisions, but we prefer the term “data-informed.” We collect data that help MIT’s senior officers make decisions about what’s best for the Institute.
A lot of the data we collect are available on our website, including our survey data. We have philosophy that if we ask people to fill out a survey, they’re entitled to see the results!
Q: How has your mandate changed in the last 20 years, and what do you see in the office’s future?
A: Institutional Research was established in 1986 and initially we focused primarily on physical planning. Over the next 15 years we began administering surveys, responding on behalf of the Institute to external data requests, and providing briefing materials. In 2000 we moved to the Office of the Provost, and our portfolio has continued to evolve and grow, both in terms of the services we provide to MIT leadership and the greater MIT community, and our involvement in sharing data with other universities. The staff has evolved as well to include analysts, programmers, experts in survey design, data visualization, database design, statistics, and qualitative analysis. MIT IR has an extraordinarily gifted staff.
Nationally, large institutional research offices were needed mostly by public institutions to respond to state legislatures. Private universities and colleges have slowly built up their capacity, in large part to provide internal analysis. In 1988, MIT joined the Association of American Universities Data Exchange (AAUDE), a consortium which facilitates data sharing with other AAU universities on things like the composition of faculty at the department level. The number of private AAU universities participating in the AAU Data Exchange has gone from a handful in 1990 to all 27 since I and others began encouraging our colleagues to become active.
Before MIT became involved, members were mailing each other this information on paper — you’d have file cabinets of paper! — so MIT first volunteered to provide an FTP server to facilitate electronic exchange of data. Now the AAU Data Exchange has a data warehouse, which has made the whole system very efficient.
One area were we focus a lot of attention, through our surveys and other data collections, is on what happens to our graduates: What percentage are going into industry? What are the companies that are hiring them? It used to be that all universities cared about was how many students go to graduate school, but MIT sends a lot of graduates to industry.
One new project is working with Professors Susan Hockfield, Sangeeta Bhatia, Nancy Hopkins, Fiona Murray of the MIT Innovation Initiative and the Boston Biotech working group on some interesting issues in gender representation in biotechnology, looking at company leadership, issuance of patents, and other areas.
Q: MIT’s IR office is relatively big for a private university. Why is that?
A: The scope of work for MIT’s Institutional Research Office is unusual because we’re involved in many projects that are important to MIT but not typical for institutional research. For example, at MIT we work with MITx data and sponsored research trends.
We’re very lucky and unusual because at MIT we have centralized data systems but local decision making. The fact that we have only one registrar, for example, and centralized accounting systems makes it much easier for my office to pull data together and analyze it.
I can’t emphasize enough how important the MIT data warehouse is — to everyone at MIT, not just to us. If you’re an analyst in an office like ours, you’d have to learn query languages for all the different databases. You would also spend a large proportion of your time compiling and cleaning data. But IS&T set up this system so that data could feed into one central warehouse, and you don’t need special programming skills to pull information out of it. The MIT data warehouse has been the envy of most of our peers.
MIT is the best place in the world to do institutional research because we have faculty who aren’t afraid of the data, even if they show there’s room for improvement. There’s an engineering mentality that permeates MIT. If we find we’re different from our peers in a way that we need to fix, then we identify that and fix it. You never think you’re the best because there’s always something to improve on.

Young Designer on the Rise: Simoul Alva
India’s Simoul Alva is a design powerhouse whose work displays a flexible range of approaches and styles united by imagination and confident intelligence. A 2019 Visual Communication Design graduate of the National Institute of Design, India, this young designer has already racked up an impressive list of scholarships, awards, and recognition. Alva’s typeface Vixen Display was awarded a 2018 Certificate of Excellence by the Type Directors Club in New York City and was lauded as a student typeface designer to watch on Printmag.com.
She interned at Pentagram in 2018 and freelanced for Wieden and Kennedy as well as Sagmeister and Walsh. She also won the 2017 Helen Landsowne Resor Scholarship awarded by global advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, given to only five design/advertising female students worldwide. Clearly, she’s a young designer to watch.
Navigating Language and Culture
Her portfolio contains several self-generated projects and student work, such as designs for Nike Organix and Air India that display a cross-cultural form of translation reflecting her own design interests along with a larger window into Indian culture. Packaging for a line of dairy products uses Hindi script to create the brand name Doodh (milk in Hindi), resulting in a graceful word mark that doesn’t require the ability to read Hindi to appreciate it. Alva says, “I have a sense of pride of where I’m from, and I like taking the time to educate people about it, setting the cultural tone and context no matter how random and messy my references may look.”
While she was on an exchange semester at École Supérieure D’art Et De Design (ESAD) in Reims, France, Alva found herself at a disadvantage since she spoke no French. For someone used to designing across language and cultural barriers, the experience was frustrating but she rose creatively to the challenge with a photo project, Onomatopoeia, intended to make a viewer hear sounds as a response to visuals, relying on common ground that all humans understand no matter what language they speak.
“We take language so much for granted until we’re severed from it,” she says. “The experience pushed me to start observing things more closely because for a good part of five to six months, my life was largely silent. Basic decision making relies on whether you can read something or not. I never thought of how important it is! I had to keep Googling what words meant every time I went grocery shopping to know if I was buying chicken or fish.”
A Young Designer Swimming with the Big Fish
Working at Pentagram on a team headed by Michael Bierut for MIT, a huge client with a formidable design pedigree, might have given even a more seasoned designer pause. Was she scared? Intimidated? Nope. “When I arrived, I started working on MIT Technology Review my first week,” says Alva. “Most of the identity design was already done! I created diagrams and infographics for Associate Partner Aron Fay. I had never worked within a big identity system like that, and I was tasked to really push it and explore how the diagrams would fit into the bigger picture.”
Her time at Pentagram had a lasting impact on the way Alva now approaches the collaborative design process. She says, “Every time I make a presentation now, I work really hard to make sure everyone is on the same page: It’s not just about the final artwork but the whole story behind it, and clients need to understand the things that went through your head. You can’t make a presentation and say things like serif or sans serif or use a lot of design jargon—you use images and anything else that will get your point across. Break it down, enable them to talk about it. You have to keep going until you understand what they like and what they don’t like.”
Launching a Design Career
Alva’s approach to career management blends ambition and fearlessness. Asked how she’s achieved so much recognition at an early point in her design trajectory, she says, “It’s important to apply for things even if you think you don’t have a shot. Students don’t realize what other people can see. Push yourself, go the extra mile, make connections, reach out to the people you look up to and want to work with. Established designers are so generous with their time, because they remember being in your position! When Stefan Sagmeister did the Happy film, we couldn’t access it in India because of the country restrictions and all of that, so I reached out to him and said that we really wanted to run it in the film screenings program at our design school, and he was nice enough to just send us a copy. It was incredible. There’s so much support in the world design community; all we have to do is find each other.”
As encouragement to current design students and recent graduates, the designer points out that for every award and scholarship she’s received, and for every situation that’s worked out the way she wanted it to, there have been three or four that haven’t.
“It’s always hit or miss…you never know who will like your work. The first time you apply for an award you realize the number of steps you have to go through, even little things like optimizing file size,” Alva says. “Small things like that take you a long way, the practice takes the fear out. Every time you put yourself in a room where you’re not the smartest person, you open a set of connections you didn’t even know existed. It’s important to be uncomfortable in that way, and accept the challenges. Just observe. You have to learn from the best, or you’re not going to be any good.

How to Save for Your Kids’ College Years Without Bankrupting Yourself
Do you know what it costs to go to college these days? If not, you should probably sit down for this.
A two-year degree costs more than $3,600 per year on average, according to a College Board analysis of published tuition prices for the 2018-19 school year.
A four-year degree from a public school? You’re looking at over $10,000 per year.
And — take a breath — a private-school degree? $35,830. Every year. For four years.
And that’s just the average.
If you’re thinking ahead about the cost of sending your child or grandchild to college, I realize I may have just sent you running for a paper bag to gasp into.
Whether it’s community college, a state school or the Ivy League, higher education is costly. Americans have more than $1.5 trillion in student loan debt to prove it.
And all that debt has left most parents to wonder: Where are tuition prices going to go from here? While data shows college prices aren’t rising as quickly as in previous years, no one can be sure.
But if you use these strategies to prepare for their college years, you can figure out the best way to support your favorite student financially.
Determine What You Can Afford to Contribute and When
You’ve probably dreamed of the child in your life leaving college with a quality degree from a great university and zero debt. It might even be why you’re reading this right now.
But it’s important to not let that dream lead you astray.
Instead of asking yourself what you should or need to contribute, ask yourself what you can contribute.
We all know the earlier you begin to save, the better off you’ll be.
But if you’re behind where you’d like to be, you should be careful of how aggressively you try to make up ground.
Peter Magnuson, an independent financial advisor in Sarasota, Florida, says it’s important to note that you’ll spend a lot more years in retirement than your child will spend in college. “Would you fund this over funding your retirement account in a healthy and appropriate way?”
Magnuson has seen many parents take on heavy financial burdens for their children. He’s seen clients, determined to cover all costs for multiple children, still working with little savings in their 70s, despite considerable earnings.
Try not to think about saving for your child’s college education in a silo. Instead, think of it alongside your other financial goals.
Tackle high-interest credit card debt before thinking about your children’s futures. Then prioritize your retirement savings. Remember that your kids can take out loans and get scholarships to help with school costs, but you can’t take out loans or get scholarships when you’re ready to retire.
If you’re confident the rest of your budget is healthy, you can start adding college savings to the mix. But you don’t have to plan to cover every dollar of your child’s education.
Even if you start when your child is 10 years old and put away $100 per month, you could save at least $9,600 to contribute toward their education by the time they go to college.
Play with a college savings calculator to determine what’s reasonable for your family, and remember that you can always adjust how much you choose to save over time.
5 Common Ways to Save for College
Once you’ve determined how much you can afford to contribute, you’ll need to know where to put that money. The ideal place for you will depend on whether you’d prefer to play things safely or assume higher risk for the chance of higher returns.
Here are some pros and cons to the most common options.
Traditional Banking
If you are over 18 in the U.S. and do not have checking or savings account already, you are in a serious minority.
Pro: Your savings in these accounts are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (or the National Credit Union Insurance Fund, if your account is through a credit union) up to $250,000. This means that your savings are protected from the volatility of the stock market.
And you can usually take advantage of promotional offers that will earn you cash back or bonus points just for opening a new account.
According to the FDIC, while the average interest rate on savings accounts at U.S. banks they insure is 0.09%, high-yield savings accounts have gained popularity in recent years.
These accounts can get you 2% interest (or more). If you’re interested, check out this list of high-yield savings accounts curated by our trusted partner, Fiona.
You also have the option of investing in certificates of deposit, or CDs. With these certificates, you put down a deposit at a commercial bank, and the bank pays you interest over a fixed period time, after which you receive your full deposit back.
The interest you receive from CDs is usually no more than 2%.
Con: Even 2% is very far from most investment targets. To give you some perspective, the S&P 500 — a stock market index that tracks the stock value of 500 companies designed to represent the market as a whole — has returned at least 10% in five of the last seven years.
So while your money would have been safe from the 4% loss the index saw in 2018, you also would have missed the almost 22% return of 2017.
For short-term savings goals, it might be best to avoid the possibility of a market downturn. But if you’re investing for the long-term, the market will provide much more interest.
529 Plan
If you want your interest to go further, one option you have is the 529 savings plan. Offered in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., these plans are available for anyone to open and contribute to.
The accounts are exempt from federal income tax as long as you use the withdrawn cash for tuition or room and board.
Pro: When you open a 529 savings account, your money gets invested in a portfolio of your choice, same as how you’d manage a 401(k). While your options will vary based on the institution, you will commonly have access to mutual funds, exchange-traded funds and target-date portfolios.
What this means is that your returns will more closely mirror the market.
And in most states, you’ll receive an income tax deduction or credit for contributions you make to the 529 plan.
Con: The downside of a 529 savings plan is that it can only be used for college expenses. If your child ends up not attending a postsecondary institution, you can name someone else as a beneficiary — or even use the balance for your own education.
But if you take the cash out for any reason other than postsecondary education, you’ll pay federal taxes on the amount withdrawn plus a 10% federal tax penalty.
529 Prepaid Tuition Plan
A second kind of 529 plan allows parents and grandparents to lock in today’s tuition rates at participating universities in your home state.
Pro: In most cases, the state will guarantee that the funds you contribute keep up with tuition costs, which means your investment is insured in the event the fund underperforms.
Magnuson encourages his clients to consider this option. “If you can afford to make that payment, your child at least has the ability to get a four-year degree,” he said.
Con: Typically, while you will not lose everything in the fund if your child chooses to go to an out-of-state institution, you will not get the full balance. You also must be a resident of the state with which you have the plan.
So if your child or grandchild knows they want to go to an out-of-state school, this will likely not be a good plan for you.
UGMA and UTMA Accounts
These accounts were developed in the mid 1950s and revised a decade later. Both were subsequently named after the legislation that established them. The Uniform Gift to Minors Act and Uniform Transfer to Minor Act both concerned the transfer of securities.
The result of their passage was the creation of custodial accounts that allow a gift giver to invest and manage funds until a minor reaches a certain age, at which point control of the funds are transferred.
Pro: There are no restrictions on what the child can use the money for. So if you simply want to provide a nest egg to help them start their adult life — whatever that may look like for them — this freedom can be attractive.
And since the money will be under the child’s name, a percentage of the earnings will typically go untaxed.
Con: For UGMA accounts, control of the account is given to the child at 18. For this reason, the accounts tend to draw criticism. Magnuson says they are the only saving option that he would encourage investors to reconsider.
That’s because, in the event of poor life decisions, large sums of money under the control of an 18 year old can be a dangerous thing. And as a parent (or grandparent), you will not be able to intervene.
“All you can do is throw a play in from the sideline and hope that someone runs it,” Magnuson said.
UTMA accounts usually transfer at the age of 25. Because of this, some find them to be a preferable option if they are wanting to go the custodial route.
Ultimately, you’ll have to assess your own level of comfort if you’re considering this option.
General Investing
You’ll notice that the downsides of the investment options up to this point have largely had to do with restrictions that these accounts place on distributions.
These restrictions can be avoided if you choose a more traditional investment vehicle, such as an index fund or exchange-traded fund.
Pro: With these investment vehicles, you’ll receive the same tax-deferred benefits as you would with a 529 plan.
Magnuson says that families of considerable means can receive some special benefits from choosing a 529 plan, but for most of us, it can tend to overcomplicate things.
“Most of the time what my advice would be for what I would consider the rank-and-file people is just focus your life on saving money,” Magnuson said. “And as you accumulate wealth, yes, you realize [that college will be] a potential issue coming up down the road, but you’ll address it when the time comes.”
Magnuson says that if you retrain your thinking this way, you won’t have to worry about unqualified distribution penalties. You’ll have complete control over your funds in the event that plans change and your child’s college situation looks different from what you had been expecting.
Con: When you open such accounts, your money manager will typically charge a fee of around 1% of your returns.
Understanding How College Savings Can Affect Financial Aid
Many worry — when decided on an investment vehicle — about the potential impact their savings might have on their child’s financial aid eligibility.
Financial aid eligibility is calculated by subtracting what’s called the expected family contribution, or EFC, from the cost to attend the institution. Your EFC is determined by a formula that takes your family’s income and assets into account — including any investments held by either parent or the child.
Some grandparents will open 529 accounts in their own name as a way around this. But there are also consequences to that method: Any withdrawals given to the child from the grandparent’s 529 plan must be counted the following year as income for the student.
This will reduce the child’s financial aid eligibility by much more than a 529 plan in their family’s name. For this reason, it’s typically best to have a 529 plan in the name of the child or parent.
But even if you have your investment vehicle decided, you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to look into financial aid options.
Tips for Saving on College Tuition
It’s important to fill out the FAFSA — the Free Application for Federal Student Aid — even if you think you earn too much to be eligible.
The FAFSA is a gateway to consideration for grants, loans, need-based scholarships and even work-study jobs. It’s used at two-year and four-year institutions, and even some vocational schools.
Your estimated family contribution determined by the FAFSA may seem high, but it’s not an indicator for how much you’ll actually pay once aid has been granted.
As your child fills out college applications during their senior year of high school, encourage them to apply for scholarships, too. You don’t need straight A’s to be eligible for many awards, and there’s something for students in every course of study.
Talk With Your Child About How They Can Help
A 2017 survey of nearly 2,000 parents by Fidelity Investments found that 72% of parents were saving for their children’s college educations. Parents planned to cover 51% of college costs from family savings.
That’s generous! But it’s not exactly optimistic. Still, 85% of parents expect their kids to graduate with student debt.
Start talking about college plans when your child enters high school. Ask them about their ideas, dreams and goals — and you should expect them to fluctuate during their teen years. Their career goals in ninth grade could be vastly different from their plans as they prepare to graduate high school.
During these conversations, be open about your family’s ability to pay for college.
Being honest about your financial commitment can help your child manage their expectations about college costs and what your family can afford to contribute.
Encourage your child to find part-time work to help save. Those birthday and Christmas checks, the tax refund check they’ll get from that job — every bit can get your family closer to your goal.
And if they need a little help, we might know a few ways the child in your life can make some extra money.

Marx, Money and Me
A few years back I fancied myself as an investor.  Very briefly and naively and not really that sincerely, I hasten to add.  I had a little excess money and nothing good to do with it, so I started to explore the mysterious world of stock exchanges.  It was, and still basically is, like a foreign language to me: as packed with acronyms and esoteric terminology as the unrelated field I had worked in for years, and not nearly as welcoming.  I tried to get my head around market capitalisation, share volumes, director dealings, sectors and portfolios; the AIM, the FTSE, the RNS, EPS...all to little avail.  I tried to wade through the obvious scams of latter-day snake oil salesman promising to make me thousands a day in the hope that perhaps I might stumble upon some nugget of useful advice I could use to my actual advantage.
Nope.  While in theory the markets are something "anybody" can invest in, they hardly seem to be set up to guide the curious gently into the echelons of obscene wealth.  Like a Las Vegas casino with no windows or clocks on the walls, designed that way to throw your sense of time and self off kilter, the stock market felt like the proverbial snake pit.  Coincidentally enough, the trading floors of many international stock exchanges seem often to be windowless as well.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Going back a few years more and I fancied myself a communist.  Not a proper a communist, not really, just the kind of communist you call yourself when you're a teeanger and you read The Communist Manifesto one evening and wonder why they haven't taught you much about this captivating little polemic more in school, and wonder some more whether that vague sense you have there's something very, very wrong with the world might not entirely be by accident.
You grow up in a middle-middle-class Methodist household, attend a private school your parents would be no means be able to afford were it not for a scholarship paid for by the church, and encounter contemporaries considerably more "well off" than you.  Here are kids who don't seem to know what it is to have parents who sometimes tell you that they "can't afford" something.  None of this matters in any overt way, but there's something about the way the more affluent ones conduct themselves that sticks with you.  A certain...confidence, what today might be called a sense of "entitlement" or "[insert adjective here] privilege" viz. their place in the world.  It's never explicitly arrogant - it's too polite, too English for that - it's just...there.  Everywhere.  You start to feel a little of it yourself.  To feel that there really is a kind of order to society, that's real, yes, but not natural.  An order that is what it is, and maybe always has been, but could be so many other ways, too. There's a phrase you start to hear a lot: "just put it on the bill."  There's something you need for school: paper and pens, folders, stationery, books, chocolate, uniform, computer game magazines (it's the 90s), more chocolate, but you don't have the cash for it yourself. Your parents, quite rightly in retrospect, have rationed your cash for the term, but still, there's stuff you need.  Or "need" (which is the same thing).  Just put it on the bill, someone says.  Your parents will pay for it at the end of term.  So you do, and that's that.  Money becomes someone else's problem. Of course, this isn't substantially different to the ordinary experience of being a child of ordinary enough middle class parents.  You can't just have anything you want, no questions asked (though it seems like some kids can, and you find yourself hating them, secretly) but anything you need, or "need"?  Not a problem.  Just put it on the bill. You start to feel like all of life might be like this.  That "the real world", whenever you eventually land there, might be nothing to fear.  Just a place where there's a normal life waiting for you to live, and die, and happily forever after.
youtube
And that's all there really is to say about that. Back to the present, and you find yourself dipping into Marx again:
"The extent of the power of money is the extent of my power. Money’s properties are my – the possessor’s – properties and essential powers. Thus, what I am and am capable of is by no means determined by my individuality. I am ugly, but I can buy for myself the most beautiful of women. Therefore I am not ugly, for the effect of ugliness – its deterrent power – is nullified by money. I, according to my individual characteristics, am lame, but money furnishes me with twenty-four feet. Therefore I am not lame. I am bad, dishonest, unscrupulous, stupid; but money is honoured, and hence its possessor. Money is the supreme good, therefore its possessor is good. Money, besides, saves me the trouble of being dishonest: I am therefore presumed honest. I am brainless, but money is the real brain of all things and how then should its possessor be brainless? Besides, he can buy clever people for himself, and is he who has power over the clever not more clever than the clever? Do not I, who thanks to money am capable of all that the human heart longs for, possess all human capacities? Does not my money, therefore, transform all my incapacities into their contrary?
"If money is the bond binding me to human life, binding society to me, connecting me with nature and man, is not money the bond of all bonds? Can it not dissolve and bind all ties? Is it not, therefore, also the universal agent of separation?
- Karl Marx - The Power of Money, Economic Manuscripts of 1844.
This week, the share price for Oxford Biomedica, which had been languishing around 4 - 6 pence per share for as long as I'd held a modest 8,687 shares in it (total value £680) suddenly leaped up to 9 pence, and even almost touched 11 pence early yesterday, before starting to settle down at around 10 pence per share this morning.  I sold my shares at around 9 pence each on Tuesday morning, netting myself £737, or £57 profit.  This, of course, in the world of the stock market, is virtually nothing.  Still, there they were: the strangely vivid fantasies of obscene, unearned wealth and what I might do with it.  What better versions of me might do with it, and what much, much worse versions of me might do too.  I imagined how I might turn £737 into ten or a hundred times that through clever investments and well timed day trades through the Shareprice app on the bus.  The secret millionaire.  Ridiculous, vulgar, unrealistic and totally contrary to the spirit of all I really know would really fulfil me in life.  But there such thoughts were, brought back to the surface of my mind as naturally as bubbles to the surface of the fishbowl.  Money, I know, is neither good nor bad in itself: it is, as Marx indicates, the crystallisation of power.  And what is power but opportunity, possibility? There are so many more questions that need to be asked.

MyDx Enters Into An ~$80,000 MyDx360 SaaS Licensing And Services Agreement With Retailer BlackSwan
BlackSwan enters the Delivery Pen and Supplements Markets with I+huntr Brand, Tailored for Performance Athletes, Powered by MyDx360
SAN DIEGO, June 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- MyDx, Inc. (OTCQB: MYDX), a science and technology company and creator of MyDx® (My Diagnostic), the first multi-use handheld chemical analyzer designed for cannabis professionals and retail consumers to correlate the chemical profile of cannabis with how it makes them feel and which ailments they report it alleviates, today announced a definitive agreement with BlackSwan, a developer and retailer of custom vaporizers, to provide a community engagement software platform to support its new product development initiatives under the terms of MyDx360.
I+huntr Brand Powered by MyDx360
Licensing Agreement Provides for Branding on Multiple Delivery Mechanisms
As part of the MyDx360 agreement, BlackSwan chose from one of MyDx's base chemical formulations that best alleviated pain and inflammation according to the MyDx community. From there, MyDx software enabled BlackSwan to "boost" that formula by changing various cannabinoid and terpene parameters as well as other natural organic terpenes to come to a final formula uniquely formulated by BlackSwan.
"This uniquely positions MyDx at the center of a revolution in how therapies are developed utilizing chemicals found in cannabis and other naturally occurring plants. The MyDx360 platform makes it incredibly easy for market players to create new high quality tailored formulations that can support their customer's needs.  It also speaks to our ability as a company to execute on our vision of creating a brand centric ecosystem powered by community driven data.  We look forward to supporting BlackSwan and the development of the I+huntr brand personalized for high performance athletes and powered by MyDx360," said Daniel Yazbeck, CEO of MyDx.
MyDx will continue to work with BlackSwan to support the development of new formulations, which will be manufactured in the form of concentrates via state licensed suppliers, and then delivered via MyDx's hardware, the ECO Smart Pen, and supplements tailored to performance athletes. Once products have been delivered via MyDx's manufacturing partnerships, the MyDx App will provide customer-engagement support to acquire and analyze user feedback.
BlackSwan to Launch I+huntr Brand for High Performance Athletes
BlackSwan intends to market its unique formula under the I+huntr Brand to athletes seeking alternatives to traditional opioid pain killers, among other ailments – an area the company has significantly researched and thinks will grow into a substantial market, especially as cannabinoid and other natural plant extract therapeutic use becomes more widely accepted.
"We see this as an opportunity to develop a quality product and reduce the time to market for the Delivery Pen and Supplement markets with targeted formulas we can brand and sell," said BlackSwan CEO, Jeff Lau. "Moreover, we think there's significant opportunity in this space to differentiate, capture market share and truly offer products that might help alleviate specific ailments or side effects as defined by cannabis users and we're excited to be working with the foremost authority on the subject in MyDx."
BlackSwan intends to have its products available for sale by January of 2018 with an initial launch in the State of California, which represents close to 50% of the US cannabis market. The company will offer its products in three distinct organic flavors (Orange Crush, Blueberry and Mint), which will target various levels of recovery based upon cannabis user formulas addressing their anxiety, pain management, recovery, and performance.
Cannabis Offers the Potential to Curb the Opioid Crisis Among Athletes
Addiction to pain killers is Youth Athletics' dirty little secret as young men and women vie for prestigious college athletic scholarships and eventually elite status as professionals. The abuse is well documented among athletes; however, little to no alternatives have been provided that have the dual potential of alleviating their addictions as well as providing inflammation and pain relief.
In an article by Sports Illustrated titled "How painkillers are turning young athletes into heroin addicts", SI covered the tragic story of Roman Montano, a high school baseball Phenom who was destined to be a star and, at one time, started over current Phillies Ace, Ken Giles. Unfortunately, that story would never came true. A foot injury would lead to an OxyContin addiction that would eventually transform him into a heroin addiction. That heroin addiction would end that young man's life at a tender age of 22.
Unfortunately, we'll never know what might have been had Roman remained healthy, and it's a story that hasn't been lost on BlackSwan CEO Jeff Lau.
"This is a topic that many people aren't talking about because it's a bit taboo, there's big money involved and there's immense pressure to perform when injured," said BlackSwan CEO, Jeff Lau. "Fortunately, the chemicals in cannabis have shown tremendous promise in its ability to alleviate pain and inflammation in much of the same way as opioids, but without the propensity for addiction, and with the potential for additional health benefits, which are still undergoing studies."
The reality is that since cannabis is still a Scheduled I drug federally, many people who would otherwise have alternatives to opioids can't get them. Moreover, if they decided to use cannabis as an alternative, then they could potentially violate substance abuse policies that currently exist in all levels of athletics and that could have severe consequences, financial or otherwise.
The good news is that formulating cannabis with ingredients that have healing factors without the "high" associated with cannabis (namely CBD and various Terpenes) is gaining wider-acceptance and could potentially one day be the drawing line that many athletes have hoped for. This is exactly the area BlackSwan intends to focus on with the help of MyDx.
CBD and Terpene Formulations Have Demonstrated Anti-Inflammation Properties
CBD has been reported by various publications and research reports to be a cannabinoid known for its extensive therapeutic value. It is a powerful anti-epileptic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-nauseate, sleep aid, muscle relaxant, sedative and anti-proliferative. Some people call it the "Miracle Drug." What makes it popular among users is its non-psychotropic properties, meaning it does not give you the "high" that you feel when you consume THC. As a result, it can also be administered at relatively high doses without any known undesired psychological side effects.
Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds that give plants and flowers their unique smell. In cannabis plants, terpenes originate from the same glands that produce THC, CBD and other cannabinoids and assist the effects of cannabinoids by also interacting with endocannabinoid system in people, otherwise known as the "Entourage Effect." Terpenes with anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties include Caryophyllene, Linalool, and Pinene, to name a few.
To learn more about the cannabinoids, terpenes, the entourage effect, and the science of how they all interact to impact our physiology, please refer to Part 3: Cannabis 2.0 on page 17 of the MyDx White Paper.
