hello! this is so thoughtful omg, thank you so much for asking. preordering the book at all is a huge help! more preorders mean there’s a better chance more retailers will want to stock the book, and also lets the publisher know that my work (and hopefully, this kind of story) is something readers are interested in.

i don’t think there’s a specific method of purchase that would benefit me particularly, but i do think this is a lovely opportunity to support an independent bookstore by preordering through them! or if you don’t have the means, requesting it from your local library is always an option.

but again - preordering the book, no matter where or how, means so much. barnes & noble is currently having a 25% off all preorders sale until the 27th, if that interests anybody! i’ve been trying to read more prose novels so i may peruse their collection myself. happy reading!

i believe it’s all the same! i think the main difference in terms of sales is that hardcovers have a higher return - but i’m not hung up about that, so please get the format you prefer! i will actually not begin to get royalties until a certain number of copies have been sold (i don’t know if “earning out” is a concept exclusive to publishing but i’m happy to talk about that another time), and that’s something out of my control so i can only hope the book does well.

I spent like three days trying to make up my mind on this, and I'm still not satisfied, but as of the moment, in no particular order:

The Best Boys

Mr. William Guppy of Kenge & Carboy, Bleak House

He's awkward, he's manipulative, he has no real social skills to speak of, and he's in love. I actually really disliked this character when I first read the book circa 2011, but as Burn seems wont to do, I ended up being completely won over in the end. ^_^; His Guppy is expressive, less a comic relief and almost sympathetic. I mentioned in a conversation with @synthapostate about how Guppy is technically an antagonist, but he's played in such a way that you really can't see it (unlike the book). Also the camera is half in love with Burn this entire series, and it makes it very, very easy to fall in love with this dorky, curly-haired puppy of a man.

Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, Pacific Rim & Pacific Rim: Uprising

I could write sonnets about Hermann for how much I've come to love him. 😅 He's one of the Characters of All Time for me. From his passion, his stubborn resilience, and his sharp humor, to his unwavering loyalty for those he cares for and his ability to care so deeply, how could I not irrevocably fall for him? (Also singlehandedly the cause of the 2023 Burn Binge.) Hermann found his way into my heart from the very beginning, but I never realized how at home he had made himself until the day I turned around and he was patiently waiting for me to see him. I think I fell for him and Newt in the same fell swoop, and my love for both of them is unwavering.

Dr. Owen Harper, Torchwood

I've been in love with this bastard since 2013; I've been repressing that adoration for 10 years. I- I don't really remember the exact moment that my opinion of Owen shifted from extreme dislike to him carving a permanent place in my very being, but there it is. He's sarcastic, an incorrigible flirt, and has one of the biggest, kindest hearts I've ever come across in fiction. At the time, I was pre-Med, and I aspired to be half as compassionate a doctor as him. After Exit Wounds, I gave up Torchwood (I couldn't, not with Tosh gone too.), but I've slowly been dipping my toes back in via Burn's reading of some of the books & the Big Finish audios. It's been 10 years, yet I think I'm more in love with this bastard than I ever was before. (And okay, I admit, he might be my favorite-favorite ^_^;)

Sgt. Detective William Blore, And Then There Were None

Bill, Bill, Bill... He's a crooked cop, he's tired of everyone's nonsense, he's filled with regret, he's probably gay. Detective Blore is yet another classic lit character that I first met back in the late 20-aughts, early 2010s who I really didn't care for. Then 2023 rolls around, and not only did I come to love him in this adaptation, but I've ended up going on an Agatha Christie bender because of it. Burn made me... well love would be too strong a word, but I definitely rank Blore as "a poor little meow meow."

Major Edmund Hewlett, TURN

How could this list be at all complete without including my beloved major? (Just picking a gif for this made me realise how badly I've missed him. 🥺) Edmund is... How do I explain how much I adore this guy? How do I possibly pin down the levels of pride I have in his journey, in his growth, explain the way my heart aches at the twists and turns that will tear him apart and build him back even stronger? How do I possibly do justice in conveying how damn aspirational he is, how merciful, how delightful? I can't, really. He's a force of nature that one must experience for themselves. (And I need to resume my rewatch methinks~)

Ben Jarvis, Cheat

I... I have entire essays I want to write about this guy. I have theories I want to discuss, but as most of them are... I can't. Yet. Maybe soon? I- Anyway. Ben was a huge surprise, and definitely nowhere close to what I was expecting when I finally got around to watching this show. I would be lying to say it wasn't a pleasant surprise, and I absolutely love how Burn was able to do a lot of solo work this series, with a lot of focus on body language and his uncanny knack for killer expressions.

Jacko Argyle, Ordeal By Innocence

This... This beautiful little shit ♡ One of the first Burn movies I actively chose to seek out, my second in his Agatha Christie adaptations, and my first dive into gif making. And Jacko-! Oh, Jacko... You stole my heart then broke it in only a few, few precious moments of screentime and backstory. He haunts the entire film, he haunts me still, and I'm so glad I had the chance to meet him.

Martin, Up There

(Oh look yet another one of my gifs 😅)

Martin is absolutely one of my favourite characters, especially for his absolute growth during the film. He crawls out of his downward spiral, he finds himself again, and ultimately discovers that there can be life after death. He just- He's grumpy, he's beautifully sarcastic, he's depressed, he's loved, and he just- Seriously I love him. Martin feels like a friend who I haven't seen in an age, and it's always a good day to bump into him again.

Reverend Benedict Marley, Lark Rise to Candleford

I almost forgot my favourite clergyman??? D:

Benedict Marley came into my life just to shake my very foundations, send me on an existential journey of self discovery, and waited for me at the end of it all with a soft smile and encouraging words. He only had one episode in the show, but his story was so easily woven and understood, his humility humbled me, and in ways that make me almost afraid to admit aloud- I felt seen in a way that I ever so rarely am. I connected to him; I understand him. He has depths that I could hardly explain in a single paragraph, but I can say that- out of all these characters- my feelings are birthed more out of a very deep respect and admiration.

I can't say this list will stay the same- I'm far from through with Burn's portfolio- but for his on-screen roles, these guys firmly remain top-tier for me. :)

Honestly, that was me for my previous semesters. I couldn't write after doing my homework and I got more and more depressed through the semesters.

It's why this semester I've basically said, FUCK IT.

I can't really provide an update yet, however be rest assured that I'm still writing every day. There are 4 chapters in Arc Two that are "complete" and in their pre-edit stage. I expect another chapter to join that party soon. I refuse to publish any chapter in that unpolished stage, though.

Since I'm writing out of order more than ever before, I'm getting far more writing done. It's only February, but I can safely say that there will be a boon of chapters come May. It'll be worth the wait.

She's also one of those Patient Yandere's but she does have a limit to how much patience she has, but if it's for you she'll gladly wait for years.

During kidnapping, nothing much will change aside from her now actually engaging in conversation with you.

i get that alex had a complication but i don't really unnderstand what it means to be reintubated. if he got diagnosed in morning and in surgery by lunch, do you think they maybe rushed things for him??? i hate for him to suffer because of negligence. they say he was in intensive care😭

I just want to give some context for my answer:

First of all, I can only speak from my own experience as a general surgeon (experience: 6.5 years excluding medical school - of which 5 were in residency, 1.5 years of independent practice). I am not an anaesthesiologist/anaesthetist - the type of doctor that is actually responsible for the general anaesthetic and intubation/extubation.

Very importantly, obviously I am not his surgeon, nor privy to any details of what happened in his case. Any assumptions are pure speculation.

Nothing I said should ever be taken as medical advice. Please seek your own medical professional. I will never under any circumstances break patient confidentiality.

Based on the information that was made public, all we know is that Alex was diagnosed with acute appendicitis on Saturday morning. How? He probably presented with some combo of abdominal pain, nausea, anorexia +/- fever. He was likely examined (most common finding would be right lower abdominal tenderness) and got an imaging study (usually an ultrasound or CT) that confirmed an inflamed appendix (appendicitis). We don't know if it was perforated (burst) or not perforated; if it was caught early (as I suspect in his case), then probably non-perforated. He likely then received IV antibiotics and was booked for surgery, all of which is appropriate.

As for the timing of surgery - in general, the longer you delay, the higher the risk of perforation and sepsis (rampant infection spreading through the body). Appendicitis is considered a surgical "emergency" in the sense that you want to get it done in a timely manner, but it also wouldn't kill the patient to delay a few hours. At my hospital, its case booking priority is "less than 8 hours" (meaning from the time I decide to operate, patient needs to be on the OR table within 8 hours). Now that means if the OR is not busy, then I might get the patient in sooner (e.g. within 2 hours), and if the OR is very busy, then it's okay for the patient to wait up to 8 hours. This can be hospital specific, but honestly, in a stable patient - they can probably wait 12 hours or more. In summary: being diagnosed with appendicitis in the morning and getting to the OR by lunchtime is pretty efficient, but nothing unusual either. (Edit: I should add I would wait if he hasn’t been fasting long enough. No solid food 8 hours before OR, or there is a risk of aspirating [vomiting and choking] on intubation or extubation, which IS a risk factor to getting re-intubated.)

Did Alex get VIP treatment and have his OR expedited? I mean, probably, but nothing that throws up a red flag. There are some patients who benefit from having a preoperative assessment by anaesthesia - e.g. they are elderly or have many other medical conditions (pre-existing heart conditions, lung conditions, previous anaesthetic issues, prior difficult intubation etc.). Of course, this is pure speculation, but Alex is a healthy 26 year old athlete with probably no major anaesthetic history (I'm not aware whether he's had surgery before, but I'm guessing not). Unless he had pre-existing medical issues or significant family history of anaesthetic problems, I would not have ordered further workup.

In the OR, he would first need to be put asleep for surgery. I am not an anaesthesiologist so I can only speak of this in general terms. When we say put under general anaesthesia, that usually means:

administering a combination of sedatives and a paralytic (not all surgeries require a paralytic, but for laparoscopic surgery - I definitely need the patient paralyzed)

intubating (put a tube down his airway and hook him up to a mechanical ventilator to breathe for him for the duration of surgery)

The surgery itself (laparoscopic appendectomy) is generally fairly routine. It takes three small incisions (the biggest is 1 cm at the belly button, 2 x 5 mm incisions - left lower abdomen and just above the pubic bone) and you remove the appendix at its base and extract it from the belly button incision. In an uncomplicated case (thin patient, non-perforated, healthy... aka. someone like Alex), it can be done in under 20 minutes. In complicated cases (obese, perforated, lots of prior surgery, etc.), it can take longer (>1 hour).

At the end of surgery, to wake up the patient, you stop the anaesthetic (fyi, medications that keep you asleep, aka. propofol, are generally short acting and wear off quickly once you stop infusing them) and reverse the paralytic (either by waiting for it to wear off if your anaesthetist's timing is good, or with a reversal agent). You must wait for the paralytic to wear off/reverse before extubating (taking the patient off the ventilator and removing their tube), or the patient will not be able to breathe on their own! So the anaesthetist will wait for clear signs (patient is moving on their own, coughing, starting to pull at the tube, etc.) before they are confident the patient is ready to be extubated.

It sounds like the surgery went as expected, and Alex got extubated after his anaesthetist clearly felt he was ready. Then that's where things started to go wrong. For whatever reason, after some unspecified time interval, he went into "respiratory failure" due to "postoperative anaesthetic complications". That could mean a whole load of things. It can range from the patient was not ready to be extubated (e.g. still paralyzed, too sleepy etc. - unlikely I think) to he went into bronchospasm/laryngospasm (airway started spasming and closing) to anaphylactic reaction (severe allergic reaction, such as to an anaesthetic) to vomiting/aspiration to... sometimes, we just don't know. We simply don't have enough information to speculate what was the case for Alex. I will, however, say that it is very uncommon after appendectomy. It is probably our most common surgical procedure, and I have done hundreds of appendectomies (from well patients to VERY sick patients) and I only remember 2 patients who had to be reintubated:

80 year old smoker with severe lung disease

50 year old big man who bit down hard on his endotracheal tube during extubation (this is why they ALWAYS put something - like a bite block - to prevent this), which caused a huge negative pressure in the chest, drawing fluid into his lungs (it's called negative pressure pulmonary edema)

I previously said it's very scary because clearly whatever Alex encountered was an airway issue. In trauma, when we resuscitate people, we talk about ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation). A always comes first because it is the most urgent thing. You have the least time to address an airway issue before the damage can be irreversible. Within minutes or less, you can desaturate (low oxygen levels in your blood, rising CO2 levels as well). An unexpected re-intubation can be quite frantic because you know that time is brain function (well, all function depends on oxygen, but especially your brain).

By the way, he went to the ICU not necessarily because he was unstable or critically ill in terms of blood pressure or oxygenation (in fact, probably not since he got out of there pretty quickly, but of course, we don't know). If a patient is intubated, by definition they are on a mechanical ventilator, so they must go to the ICU because ward nurses do not manage ventilators. Based on the statement, it sounds like he spent Saturday night on a ventilator and was successfully extubated on Sunday morning. It probably means whatever caused his respiratory failure has either been resolved or did not recur again. It is good news that he is now on a general ward and they are probably keeping him until tomorrow just for observation.

To be honest, within the limits of what we know (which is very minimal), I really can't say I see any obvious negligence or deviation from normal care. So unless there are additional details, I would not speculate that his health providers gave him anything but their best care. Unfortunately, complications do happen. At most centres, we also do morbidity and mortality rounds to revisit these cases - to ask what systemic, patient, and provider factors may have contributed to the complication. Sometimes, there are things we can improve upon; sometimes, complications are unavoidable despite your best efforts.

As for returning for Singapore... haha, that's a little harder to answer. While I have done this surgery to countless other people, I have never had it myself to speak from personal experience! I am biased since I do advise all my patients to avoid heavy lifting >15 lbs for at least 4 weeks after surgery (I don't want them to burst their sutures and develop a hernia!)... and I'm pretty sure the G forces and stress on their bodies is more than 15 lbs during a race weekend (especially Singapore) - I always thought a Singapore return was optimistic. In terms of pain, patients do really well after uncomplicated laparoscopic surgery - usually resolved within days, minimal if any narcotic use at all. In terms of energy, most are back to fairly normal levels after a week. But keep in mind that my average patients are not elite athletes. As for his airway issue, it seems resolved (he is clearly extubated and breathing on his own now), so likely (hopefully) he won't suffer long-term consequences from that. I am judging by the hopeful tone of Williams' message since they expect him to be preparing for Singapore. But the short answer is - it seems a bit rushed in my opinion, but every patient's recovery is different and we don't know his exact details and if he feels well enough - I don't think it's grossly unreasonable. Certainly, other athletes have done it.

TL;DR: What happened to Alex is very rare and quite scary. I'm so relieved he's doing well now and wish him a speedy recovery. Airway issues are an emergency. People recover pretty quickly from appendectomies. That being said, being back for Singapore does seem like a bit of a tall order to me. Elite athletes want to be elite athletes, sigh.

(disclaimer: I haven't actually played the games myself, sorry! i have no means to atm, but i hope ill be able to soon and that that doesn't put you off!)

You ever think about how GLaDOS's death trap in Portal 1 seems... bland? It's not an inescapable situation by any means, just portalling through a wall allows you to escape - granted, there's a fair amount of opportunities to miss that portal or that jump and die anyway due to clumsiness - but... It seems underwhelming, especially considering how sinisterly GLaDOS speaks. It... almost feels like she wanted her to escape, but that's obviously not the case: Chell's escape is one of the few sequences where GLaDOS is genuinely panicking and badly conceals it. Besides, Chell was listed as abnormally tenacious and determined, and GLaDOS is smart. She probably knew Chell should be dead as soon as possible so that she could continue having her fun.

Interestingly, GLaDOS is playing a game herself, and she has set rules in order to make the game funcional. Aperture likely didn't kill its subjects intentionally after every test: that'd be a terrible idea in almost every aspect, but she set up that system herself. She's like a cat playing with a litter of mice, taking her time to play with them before killing them simply out of satisfaction - this is gonna turn into a post about how much i love her as a rogue AI character if I don't stop 😭 - but her game has rules.

It's actually really interesting, like: she allows the test subjects as much time as needed to solve tests. At most she complains or drops passive-aggressive remarks under the guise of being a pre-recorded voice, but she allows them time to figure out the puzzles. She's patient, and she's willing to wait for a greater reward (and most chilling of all, it's not testing euphoria, just personal satisfaction at the entertainment the subjects provide her with and the fact that they inch closer towards their death).

So why didn't she make the end of Test Chamber 19 more foolproof? She's all-powerful and it is in her interest to kill her subjects efficiently as if on a conveyor belt... So, what's with the simple incinerator? It's implied that GLaDOS killed everyone before Chell with no problem.

Well, there's a reason!

Regardless if you play the game or say, watch a playthrough, Portal at its core (hehe :]) is just a cool-looking puzzle game. Despite its first-person perspective, in its essence it's interesting, and worthy to continue playing - but imagine being a test subject waking up in a now defunct facility, being forced to test by a strange robotic voice you've never heard before and with absolutely no human presence whatsoever. GLaDOS can't resist being sarcastic and putting down her subjects for fun, not to mention that the tests must be physically exhausting and often dangerous, both from chamber hazards and using the ASHPD itself. The number of chambers isn't so large, but the irresponsible test environment, pressure, doubt and mounting dread would take their toll on anyone who's susceptible to losing determination - and most importantly, hope. GLaDOS apparently finds human behavior and playing with it interesting, like the Companion Cube experiment. She does her best to create a soulless, scary and hopeless environment that she enjoys for its effects on humans. This also plays into the cake promise as being more effective - it's a tiny but pleasant reward that a tired, possibly injured and forcibly complacent person might look forward to!

This was what I saw a lot of people doing with the Moon Knight pops. People could easily just buy them from stores while others who pre-ordered were still waiting for their order! HOWEVER im so scared they’ll be Funko Shop exclusives and if that’s the case that’s gonna be so scary 😭
