══════════════════
IN YOUR YEARS LIVING, YOU’D NEVER THOUGHT THIS WOULD HAPPEN. You never thought you would find yourself in this position, but sometimes marriages just don't last. It’s been a while since your husband, Nanami Kento, and you became estranged. His constant absence, wrapped up in his work as a sorcerer, eventually took precedence over your marriage.
At first, you understood, even tried to be patient. But over time, the long hours, missed moments, and growing distance became too much to bear. You found yourself frustrated, feeling as though you were competing with a world you couldn’t fully understand or be a part of.
Slowly, that frustration turned into resentment. Despite your efforts to keep things together, the silence between you grew louder. Eventually, the separation felt inevitable. Now, standing on the other side of it, you reflect on the painful truth: sometimes love isn't enough when life pulls you in different directions.
You sighed, staring at the empty side of the bed where Kento used to sleep. The memories of better days flickered in your mind, but they felt distant, like they belonged to someone else’s life. The silence of your apartment was deafening, broken only by the occasional sound of the outside world.
“Did you ever regret it?” you whispered, almost as if speaking to the ghost of your past, hoping for an answer you knew wouldn’t come. “Did you ever think… maybe I was worth staying for?”
You shook your head, frustrated with yourself for even asking the question. It wasn’t fair to him. You knew how much responsibility weighed on Kento's shoulders. Being a sorcerer wasn’t just a job; it was a duty. But sometimes, you wished he would have chosen you, just once, over the weight of the world.
Your minds rushed to those memories again. That night when he left the house. You looked as he packed everything he could carry. His clothes, his books… small pieces of a life you once shared now reduced to what he could fit into a suitcase. The silence between you stretched, the weight of unspoken words lingering in the air, almost suffocating.
“Is this really it, then?” you finally asked, your voice barely above a whisper. It was a question that had hung in the back of your mind for months, but now, with him standing here, packing the last remnants of your life together, it felt real. Permanent.
Kento paused, his hand resting on one of his neatly folded shirts. He didn’t look at you when he spoke. “I don’t know.”
“That’s all you can say? After so many years?.....Kento....this is…” you replied, your voice cracking despite your best effort to keep it steady. “Not even a reason?”
His shoulders tensed at your words, but he still didn’t turn around. “If I say something, it would be a fight and then that fight would hurt you and I again. Do you really want that?”
“No, I don’t.” you shot back, the frustration and hurt bubbling to the surface. “But maybe it should. Because then I would know if it actually mattered. Because it didn’t feel like it mattered, Kento. It felt like I was always second place to your work, to the missions, to everything else.”
He finally turned to face you, his expression unreadable but the exhaustion in his eyes undeniable. “I never wanted it to be like this. But you knew what I was from the beginning. Being a sorcerer… it’s not something you can just walk away from.”
“And what about us? Was I something you could just walk away from?”
The question hung in the air between you, heavy and raw. For a moment, you thought you saw something flicker in his gaze—regret, maybe—but it vanished just as quickly.
“I never wanted to hurt you, you know that.” he said quietly, almost like an admission of guilt. “But this was always going to be the cost.”
You laughed bitterly, the sound harsh even to your own ears. “So that’s it? We were just collateral damage to your sense of duty?”
Kento didn’t answer right away. Instead, he closed the suitcase with a soft click, the finality of it settling like a stone in your chest. “I thought I could do both. I thought I could be there for you and still do what needed to be done. But I was wrong.”
The silence that followed was deafening. You stared at him, waiting for something more—an apology, a plea, anything. But all you got was that same calm, distant resolve that had driven you apart in the first place.
He picked up the suitcase, his fingers tightening around the handle. “Goodbye.”
And just like that, he was gone. The door clicked shut behind him, and the emptiness of the apartment swallowed you whole. You stood there, staring at the spot where he had been, feeling the weight of everything unsaid pressing down on you. It was over.
But somehow, it still didn’t feel like closure.
══════════════════
EVERYTHING THAT CAME AFTER WAS HARD. In the days that followed, the silence in your apartment became both a comfort and a curse. It was quiet—almost too quiet—but for the first time in what felt like forever, the suffocating weight of uncertainty was gone.
Kento was gone, too. But in a way, that absence, painful as it was, felt like a step toward something else. Healing, maybe. And it didn’t help, how empty the rooms were. Half of his belongings were gone and packed up when you weren’t in the apartment.
It was slow at first. You’d wake up some mornings expecting him to be there, just a shadow of his presence lingering in the air. You’d make coffee for two out of habit, only to pour the second cup down the sink. Little reminders of him still clung to the edges of your life, and each one was like a small tug at the thread of your resolve.
But as the weeks turned into months, you started to piece yourself back together. You learned how to be alone without feeling lonely, how to fill the spaces he left behind with your own life. You started to find joy in the little things again—quiet mornings with a book, walks in the park, laughing with friends who had long been neglected while you tried to hold onto something that was already slipping away.
Still, there were moments, late at night when the world went still, that the ache of missing him crept back in. It was like a dull, persistent pain—manageable, but never quite gone. You’d find yourself lying awake, staring at the ceiling, wondering what he was doing, if he was thinking of you, too. If he ever would come back and say that he regrets walking away.
Because the truth was, you still loved him. Deeply. And that was the hardest part. No matter how much you tried to move forward, to heal, the love you had for Nanami Kento never fully disappeared. It lingered, bittersweet and aching, tucked into the corners of your heart.
Some nights, you found yourself replaying those last moments with him—the way he stood in the doorway, his back turned to you, the finality of his goodbye. You couldn’t help but wonder if things could have been different. If you had fought harder, if he had tried just a little more. But those thoughts always led to the same conclusion: no matter how much you loved him, love wasn’t enough to fix what had broken between you.
And yet, despite everything, there was still a part of you that wanted him back. It was foolish, you knew that. But the heart rarely listens to reason. You missed the way he made you feel safe, even when everything else in your world felt uncertain. You missed the way he’d brush his fingers through your hair absentmindedly while reading or the quiet moments where words weren’t needed because you both just… understood.
But loving him came with a cost, one you couldn’t ignore. You knew that being with him meant sharing him with a world that constantly demanded more of him than you could ever give. It meant always being second place, always waiting for him to come home, always wondering if this time would be the last.
You weren’t sure if you could live like that again.
It was hard, knowing that despite how much better you were feeling, the part of you that still longed for him wasn’t ready to let go. You tried to distract yourself—work, hobbies, anything to keep your mind from drifting back to him. But every now and then, you’d catch a glimpse of something that reminded you of him—a certain tie in a shop window, a scent in the air—and the pang of longing would hit you all over again.
One evening, after a particularly long day, you found yourself standing at the edge of your balcony, staring out at the sunset. The sky was painted in hues of gold and pink, the world so quiet and still that it almost felt like a dream. For a brief moment, you let yourself imagine what it would be like if he were here beside you. If, somehow, you could make it work. If the love you had was enough to outweigh everything else.
But as the colors faded and dusk settled in, you realized something—wanting him, loving him, would always be part of you. But so would the pain. And maybe, just maybe, the best thing you could do was let both of those things exist without trying to fix them. To let the love you still had for him be a memory, something you carried with you but didn’t let define you anymore.
It was hard. But you were learning that sometimes, healing isn’t about forgetting the past. It’s about accepting it and finding a way to move forward anyway. Even if part of you will always wish things had been different.
You sighed, staring at the empty side of the bed where Nanami used to sleep.
You knew how much responsibility weighed on Nanami's shoulders. Being a sorcerer wasn’t just a job; it was a duty. But sometimes, you wished he would have chosen you, just once, over the weight of the world.
The doorbell rang, snapping you out of your thoughts. For a moment, your heart raced—an absurd part of you hoped it was him. But you quickly brushed the thought aside. That chapter was closed. Or so you tried to convince yourself.
When you opened the door, there he stood—Nanami Kento.
“I came to pick up the rest of my things.” he said, his voice low and steady, as if the weight of the words didn't matter. But they did. Every syllable felt like a punch to your chest.
You nodded, stepping aside to let him in, though the sight of him in the apartment again felt like a knife twisting in an old wound. He walked past you without another word, heading to what used to be your shared bedroom. It was strange—after all the time that had passed, he still moved like he belonged here, like nothing had changed. But everything had.
You followed him, your footsteps quiet as you watched him start gathering his things. His clothes, his books… small pieces of a life you once shared now reduced to what he could fit into a suitcase. The silence between you stretched, the weight of unspoken words lingering in the air, almost suffocating.
“This is it, huh?” you finally asked, your voice barely above a whisper. It was a question that had hung in the back of your mind for months, but now, with him standing here, packing the last remnants of your life together, it felt real. Permanent. “Is….is this what’s left?”
Kento paused, his hand resting on one of his neatly folded shirts. He didn’t look at you when he spoke. “I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“Anything, everything.” you replied, your voice cracking despite your best effort to keep it steady. “I just want to know if any of it ever mattered to you.”
His shoulders tensed at your words, but he still didn’t turn around. “You know it did. You matter to me. More than you know.”
“Did I?” you shot back, the frustration and hurt bubbling to the surface. “Because why have I never felt it? When will I feel it?”
He finally turned to face you, his expression unreadable but the exhaustion in his eyes undeniable. “I showed you everything I could. I gave you everything I could. Was that never going to be enough for you?”
“And what about us? Was I something you could just walk away from?”
The question hung in the air between you, heavy and raw. For a moment, you thought you saw something flicker in his gaze—regret, maybe—but it vanished just as quickly.Nanami didn’t answer right away. Instead, he closed the box with a soft touch, the finality of it settling like a stone in your chest.
“I thought I could do both. I thought I could be there for you and still do what needed to be done. But I was wrong.”
The silence that followed was deafening. You stared at him, waiting for something more—an apology, a plea, anything. But all you got was that same calm, distant resolve that had driven you apart in the first place.
He picked up the rest of his belongings, his fingers tightening around the handle. “I have to go.”
YOU DIDN’T EAT MUCH IN THE PAST FEW DAYS. But that was to be expected. You couldn’t eat in the place where you had so many memories. Yet you were feeling unwell as time went on and so slowly, gently, patiently — you tried to be good to yourself. Tried to be understanding. Going through separation, this suffering, it was never going to be easy.
The silence in your apartment became both a comfort and a curse. It was quiet—almost too quiet—but for the first time in what felt like forever, the suffocating weight of uncertainty was gone.
The emptiness felt different now. It wasn't just about loss or absence; it was about space—space to breathe, to think, to feel without the constant dread lurking in every corner. Still, the quiet held an echo of everything you had left behind, and that made moving forward all the more difficult.
Still, there were moments, late at night when the world went still and you’re watching television alone by yourself — you could feel that the ache of missing him crept back in.
It was like a dull, persistent pain—manageable, but never quite gone. You’d find yourself lying awake, staring at the ceiling, wondering what he was doing, if he was thinking of you, too. If he ever regretted walking away. Or if he missed you just as much as you did.
Because the truth was, you still loved him. Deeply. And that was the hardest part. No matter how much you tried to move forward, to heal, the love you had for Nanami Kento never fully disappeared. It lingered, bittersweet and aching, tucked into the corners of your heart. And perhaps, maybe it will always be like this.
But you had to move on. Life wasn’t going to wait for you to get better, to be better. It demanded that you keep going, even when you weren’t sure how to, even when the ghost of what you had still weighed heavy on your soul.
So, you kept going, step by step. Some days were easier than others, filled with the distractions of work, the warmth of sunlight on your skin, and conversations that pulled you out of your own head. Other days were harder—when memories of him resurfaced without warning, when a familiar scent or an old song hit you with the force of a tidal wave, threatening to drown you in nostalgia.
But you had learned by now how to weather those moments. You’d remind yourself that healing wasn’t linear, that some days you would falter, and that was okay. You had to let yourself feel the sadness, the longing, without letting it consume you.
And in time, you began to see the future more clearly, not just as a continuation of what you lost but as something entirely new. You began to make plans for yourself, not the version of you that existed with him but the person you were becoming on your own. You started to imagine new possibilities—new experiences, new places, and maybe even, eventually, new love.
But for now, it was enough to simply live. To wake up each morning with the quiet acceptance that the pain would fade, slowly, until it was just another part of you, like a scar that healed over time. And though Nanami Kento would always hold a piece of your heart, you knew that piece was no longer all you had. There was more to you, more to your life, and you would find it, one day at a time.
And maybe, tonight was just one of those nights you didn’t plan. Tonight was one more night where you tried to forget. It was just a spontaneous meeting with the friends you made because of your estranged husband.
In a way, you think that Shoko and Utahime, were the only people who had really been there for you throughout this entire mess. You met up at a quiet bar tucked away in a corner of the city, a place that felt far removed from the chaos of sorcery and everything that came with it.
Shoko sat across from you, her usual laid-back demeanor a source of steady comfort, while Utahime leaned in, her voice soft and warm, coaxing you into laughter with her lighthearted banter. The night had started out innocent enough—a few drinks, some stories, and shared frustrations. But as the alcohol flowed, so did your emotions.
“Honestly.” you groaned, swirling your drink before downing it, “I don’t even know what I miss more—him, or the idea of what we could’ve been if his work didn’t always come first.”
Shoko raised her glass, giving you a sympathetic smile. “It’s never easy, is it? Being with someone like him. The duty comes first. Always.”
Utahime nodded, her eyes full of understanding. “But that doesn’t make what you feel any less valid. You loved him. That doesn’t just disappear.”
The alcohol in your system made you bolder, more honest than you’d been in a while. You leaned forward, placing your elbows on the table, and slurred slightly, “It’s not fair, you know? I tried, I really did. But how long am I supposed to wait? How many nights am I supposed to spend alone, wondering if he’s even coming back?”
Shoko reached across the table and squeezed your hand gently. “You’re not supposed to wait forever. You deserve more than that.”
But instead of finding solace in her words, you found yourself feeling more emotional, the weight of everything you’d been holding back finally cracking open under the influence of too much alcohol. A tear slipped down your cheek, and before you could stop it, you were sobbing into your hands, overwhelmed by a mix of heartache and frustration.
“Hey, hey, don’t cry!” Utahime said softly, sliding into the seat beside you and wrapping an arm around your shoulders. “You’re doing great. This is just… part of the process.”
Shoko, usually so calm and collected, looked a little more concerned than usual. “Okay, I think it’s time to slow down on the drinks, girlie.” she said, gently pulling your glass away from you.
But you were too far gone to care. The mix of pain, regret, and alcohol had you in a place where you didn’t want to think anymore—you just wanted to feel something, anything other than the ache of missing him.
You let out a half-laugh, half-sob and raised your hands in the air dramatically. “I’m a mess! A total mess! And you know what? I miss him. I still miss him even after everything!”
Utahime tried to keep you grounded, but your emotions were all over the place. “We know. We get it. Just breathe.”
Shoko sighed, reaching for her phone. “I think we might need backup here.”
You were too busy giggling uncontrollably to notice her dialing a number, the alcohol buzzing in your veins, making you feel invincible, heartbroken, and foolish all at once.
“I’m calling Nanami.” Shoko said, her voice firm as she stepped away to speak quietly into the phone.
The name hit you like a punch in the chest, and suddenly, the laughter was gone, replaced by a pit of regret. “Wait… Shoko, no. Don’t… don’t call him.” you mumbled, slumping against the table.
But it was too late.
Half an hour later, as the bar started to empty out and the world around you became a blurry haze, you felt a familiar presence. Nanami Kento stood at the entrance, his expression unreadable, though his posture was tense, like he wasn’t sure what to expect. He scanned the room until his eyes landed on you—wild-eyed and completely drunk, your face flushed from crying and too many drinks.
Shoko and Utahime exchanged a glance as Nanami walked over to the table. “She… might’ve had a bit too much tonight, you know?” Utahime said sheepishly, standing up to give him space.
Nanami didn’t say anything at first. He just looked at you—really looked at you, like he was seeing you for the first time in months. You could see the subtle flicker of concern in his eyes, even if his face remained calm, composed.
You, on the other hand, were a mess. “Kento….” you slurred, your voice thick with emotion. “Why did you come?”
He crouched down beside you, his voice low but steady. “Shoko called me.”
You frowned, trying to process that. “You didn’t have to.”
“I know.”
For a moment, you both just stared at each other, the air between you heavy with everything left unsaid. You wanted to say so many things—to tell him how much you missed him, how much it hurt to love him, but your thoughts were too muddled, and the alcohol made everything feel distant and surreal.
Nanami sighed softly, brushing a strand of hair away from your face. “Let’s get you home.”
Too tired and drunk to argue, you leaned into his touch, letting him guide you out of the bar. As he helped you into the passenger seat of his car, you felt a pang of sadness wash over you. Even in this state, the warmth of his presence made you remember why you had fallen in love with him in the first place.
But as the car started and the city lights blurred by, you couldn’t help but wonder if this was all you’d ever be to him now—a fleeting responsibility, a problem to fix.
Through heavy-lidded eyes, you glanced over at him, your voice barely above a whisper. “Do you still care, Kento?”
For the first time in a long while, you saw a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes. “Of course I care.” he said quietly, almost like it hurt to admit it. “I always have….I always will.”
But as the darkness of the night pulled you under, you couldn’t help but think that maybe caring just wasn’t enough.
The drive was quiet, the hum of the engine and the distant noise of the city filling the silence between you and Nanami. You leaned your head against the window, feeling the cool glass against your flushed skin, the alcohol still buzzing faintly in your veins. Everything felt muted, distant, as if you were floating just outside yourself, watching the scene unfold from afar.
Nanami’s presence was steady, calm as always, but there was something different about it tonight—something almost tender in the way he glanced over at you every few moments, checking to see if you were okay. He was a man of few words, but the weight of everything left unsaid between you felt heavy in the small space of the car.
You closed your eyes, letting the rhythmic motion of the car lull you into a state somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. Your thoughts drifted in and out, a hazy mix of memories and half-formed feelings. The pain of your separation, the love you still held for him, the impossible wish that things could’ve been different.
“Do you need anything?” His voice was calm, but there was an edge to it, something restrained.
You shook your head, trying to gather your thoughts through the alcohol fog, but the room spun, and you could feel the tears welling up again, unbidden and unwelcome. The frustration, the love, the hurt—all of it crashed over you at once, too heavy to hold in any longer.
“I miss you, Kento.” you whispered, your voice barely audible. “But I just…..I don’t want to miss you anymore.”
He didn’t respond right away, and you couldn’t bring yourself to look at him, afraid of what you might see in his eyes. Afraid of the truth you already knew—that no matter how much you wanted him, how much you loved him, some things were just too broken to fix. Your face contorted in distress as you felt like you were going to hurl.
Kento stopped the car on a quiet side of the road and took a breath. He moved towards your side of the vehicle. He opened the door and brushed his hands on your back as though to soothe you. But nothing came out of you. Instead, you were just hiccupping. Tears were falling down your face by this point, as your eyes met his.
Nanami Kento sighed softly, kneeling down in front of you. He reached out, brushing a tear from your cheek with the back of his hand, his touch gentle, hesitant. “You shouldn’t have to feel like this about me, about everything.” he murmured, his voice low, filled with regret. “You shouldn’t let this hurt you. Not anymore—”
“But you did.” you cut him off, your voice cracking. “Every time you left, every time you put your work first… it felt like I didn’t matter.”
He bowed his head, the weight of your words sinking into him. “I know.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat, your hands trembling as you clutched the fabric of the couch beneath you. “I loved you, Kento. I still love you. But I don’t know if I can keep doing this… if I can keep feeling like I’m waiting for something that will never come.”
He lifted his head, his eyes meeting yours, and for the first time in a long while, you saw something break in his calm façade. “I never wanted you to wait. But I didn’t know how to stop. I didn’t know….I didn’t know how to stop saving people.”
The vulnerability in his voice, the raw honesty, made your heart ache even more. You could see it now—his struggle, his conflict between the duty he felt as a sorcerer and the love he had for you. But that didn’t change the fact that you had spent so long feeling alone, abandoned in a relationship that demanded more from you than you could give.
“Why did you come tonight?” you asked, your voice shaky, desperate for answers. “Why didn’t you just leave me there?”
Nanami was quiet for a moment, his gaze dropping to the floor. “Because I couldn’t. No matter how much I tell myself it’s better for you if I stay away… I can’t stop caring about you. Nor could I just….Nor could I just leave you like that. You don’t need to be alone, not like this.”
His words hit you like a punch to the gut. It was the truth you had always known, deep down—that he loved you, that he cared. But caring wasn’t enough to bridge the gap between the life he led and the one you needed. And that was the most painful part.
“I don’t know how to stop loving you.” you admitted, tears streaming down your face now, unrestrained. “But I also don’t know how to keep living like this. I don’t want to keep living like this.”
Nanami looked at you then, his expression conflicted, torn between his duty and the love he had for you. “I wish I could give you more. I wish I could be what you need.”
His honesty only made the hurt deeper, and you choked back a sob, turning your face away from him. “I wish that too, Kento. But wishing doesn’t make it real.”
For a long moment, neither of you said anything, the silence heavy and suffocating. Nanami stood, his movements slow, deliberate. He walked to the door, pausing with his hand on the handle.
“If you ever need me.” he said quietly, his back to you, “I’ll be there. Always. No matter what. I…I’m telling you the truth.”
His voice was low, a smooth, steady rumble that sent shivers down your spine. The way his fingers touched your skin, soft yet firm, made your breath catch in your throat. You hated how even now, after everything, he still had this effect on you. Your body, your heart—they responded to him instinctively, as if drawn to him by some invisible force you couldn’t control.
Your eyes met his, those deep, unwavering eyes that had always been so hard to read. Dark, focused, filled with an intensity that both excited and terrified you. He tilted his head slightly, waiting for your answer, his thumb brushing lightly against your lower lip. The heat between you was palpable, electric, pulling you closer despite the distance you had tried so hard to create between your lives.
But it wasn’t just lust. It was the ache of wanting something you knew you could never fully have.
“I—” You swallowed hard, your voice barely a whisper as you fought to find the words. “I don’t know what I want anymore.”
It was the truth. You were caught between desire and heartbreak, between the pull of your body and the ache in your chest.
Nanami’s gaze softened slightly, though his hand remained firm against your chin. “You can always tell me. Even if you don’t know, I’m here to listen.”
His lips were inches from yours now, and your body reacted before your mind could catch up. Your breath hitched, and you felt the throbbing in your core intensify, the need rising within you. But it wasn’t just physical—it was the need to feel close to him again, to bridge the distance between you, if only for a moment.
His thumb grazed your lip again, this time slower, more deliberate. “Tell me what you need.” he whispered, his voice like silk, coaxing you to let go of everything you were holding back.
Your heart pounded in your chest as your eyes fluttered shut for just a second, your resolve slipping away. You wanted him—needed him—but the weight of everything between you still clung to the edges of your mind.
“I want…” you began, your voice trembling as you opened your eyes to meet him once more. “I want you. But I don't want you.”
There it was. The painful truth, laid bare between you.
Nanami’s expression didn’t change, but you could see the flicker of something in his eyes—regret, perhaps, or maybe understanding. He leaned in closer, his forehead nearly touching yours, his breath warm against your skin.
“I know.” he said softly. “And I’m sorry.”
But even as he apologized, his hand slid down from your chin to the curve of your neck, his fingers tracing a slow, deliberate path that sent waves of heat coursing through your body. You inhaled sharply, your resolve crumbling further with every second that passed.
He always knew how to touch you, how to make you forget the pain, the doubts, the distance. It was intoxicating, the way he could pull you in without even trying, and despite everything, you couldn’t help but lean into it. Into him.
His lips hovered over yours, close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating from him, but he didn’t close the gap. He never did—he always waited for you to make the choice, to cross that line. He gave you control, even when it felt like you had none.
“What do you want?” he asked again, his voice barely more than a breath as his hand settled at the base of your neck, fingers brushing the sensitive skin there.
You could feel the tension coiling in your body, the way your heart raced, the way every nerve seemed to be on fire. You wanted to push him away, to tell him that this wasn’t right, that you couldn’t keep doing this. But the pull of him was too strong, and your body betrayed you.
“I want…...” The words caught in your throat, your breath shaky, your lips barely an inch from his. “I want you to make me forget.”
And in that moment, nothing else mattered. Not the pain, not the past, not the uncertainty of what the future held. All that mattered was the feel of his hand on your skin, the way his eyes never left yours, the way his presence grounded you and made you feel alive all at once.
Nanami’s lips finally brushed against yours, a soft, tentative kiss that sent a shock of electricity through your body. You responded instinctively, pressing into him, the taste of him familiar and yet still enough to set your senses ablaze.
His other hand slid down your waist, pulling you closer as the kiss deepened, slow and deliberate, like he was savoring every second of it. You moaned softly into his mouth, your body melting against him, your mind blissfully empty of everything except him.
For just this moment, you let yourself forget. Forget the hurt, the separation, the longing that had been eating at you for months. Right now, all that existed was the heat between you, the way his hands moved over your body, the way his lips claimed yours with a tenderness that both healed and hurt.
And for the first time in a long while, you let yourself fall into the moment, into him, knowing that tomorrow would bring all the same questions and heartache. But for tonight, you let yourself be with him, no matter how fleeting it might be.
The kiss lingered, both tender and desperate, a blend of longing and unresolved emotions that seemed to pulse between you. Nanami’s hands roamed your body with a careful intensity, as if he were trying to memorize every curve, every shiver that ran through you. His touch was both familiar and achingly new, a reminder of what you once had and what you had been missing.
You clung to him, your hands tangled in his shirt, pulling him closer as if you could erase the months of separation with just this physical connection. Every touch, every caress felt like a balm to the wound that had been left open for so long.
But even as the moment enveloped you, reality kept its sharp edge. Every kiss, every touch was a reminder of the distance that had come between you, the reasons you’d tried so hard to move on. The passion that ignited between you was a bitter-sweet symphony, playing a melody of both desire and regret.
Nanami broke the kiss, his breathing ragged, his forehead resting against yours. He looked into your eyes with a mixture of yearning and sadness, the weight of everything unsaid pressing heavily between you.
“I’m so sorry.” he whispered, his voice barely more than a breath. “For everything.”
You could only nod, your throat tight, your heart aching at the sincerity in his voice. “I know.” you managed to say, your voice trembling. “I know.”
He cupped your face gently, his thumbs brushing away the tears that had silently fallen. “You mean everything to me, you know?” he said softly, his gaze unwavering. “But I know I can’t just come back and expect everything to be okay.”
You nodded again, tears blurring your vision as you tried to process the complexity of the moment. The feelings between you were still raw, unhealed, and the reality of your situation pressed down hard on both of you. You wanted to hold onto him, to keep him close, but the pain of the past and the uncertainty of the future loomed large.
Kento's massivehands slowly slid from your face to your shoulders, his touch grounding and reassuring. “We can’t go back to how we were.” he said softly, a note of resignation in his voice. “I can’t promise you that everything will be perfect.”
You took a shaky breath, trying to find your voice amidst the whirlwind of emotions. “I don’t expect perfection,” you said, your voice cracking. “I just… I just want to know that you still care, that there’s still something left between us.”
He looked at you with a deep sadness in his eyes, as if he were trying to convey all the things he couldn’t put into words. “I care,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “More than you know. But we both need to heal, to figure out what’s next. I can’t keep coming and going, leaving you with more pain.”
You swallowed hard, trying to reconcile his words with the longing you still felt. “What happens now?” you asked softly, feeling the weight of the question hanging in the air.
Nanami sighed, pulling you into a gentle embrace. “I don’t know.” he admitted.
“Me neither.” You whisper to him as your eyes echoed to him and narrowed. “But I want you to love me. Tonight. Right now.”
“But—”
You kissed him, hungry and passionate. You pull at his jaw, wanting him closer than ever before. You want him near. You want him enveloping you. As though an embrace that would lock you away in his warmth for the rest of your lives. It was as though the fire of young love reawakened after a long hibernation. And you want more than anything this spring, this warmth of spring. His love.
Kento hesitates for a moment, his gaze heavy with concern and desire, before he finally whispers, "Are you sure?"
You nod, breathless, your hands trembling as you reach for him. "I'm sure, Kento. I want you… I've always wanted you."
His resolve falters, and he leans forward, capturing your lips again with a fervor that sends a jolt of electricity through your body. His hands slide over your back, pulling you closer, and you feel the heat of his body pressing against you. He deepens the kiss, his tongue tracing your lips, coaxing you open to taste him, to feel him.
When he finally breaks the kiss, you're both panting, your breaths mingling in the confined space of the car. There's a moment where neither of you speaks, just staring at each other, the weight of your shared desire hanging in the air.
Kento's hand moves between your legs, his fingers grazing over the fabric of your clothes, and you shiver at the contact. He’s gentle at first, almost hesitant, but when he sees the way your body responds, a low growl escapes his throat. He’s lost in the moment, his mouth descending to taste you, his tongue working deftly to unravel every ounce of pleasure he can from you.
You gasp, your back arching against the seat as his tongue dances over your most sensitive parts, his spit mixing with your own arousal. His hands grip your thighs, holding you in place as he devours you like a man starved, each stroke and flick of his tongue pushing you closer to the edge.
When you finally break, a cry tearing from your throat, he doesn’t hesitate. He lifts you easily, pulling you onto his lap, his lips finding yours again in a messy, desperate kiss. You can taste yourself on his lips, the tang of your desire mingling with his own.
He fumbles with his pants, freeing himself from the constraints, and you feel the heat of him, hard and ready, pressing against you. Your eyes meet, and for a moment, there’s a silent understanding — a shared want that transcends words.
With a quiet groan, he grips your hips, guiding you over him, his breath catching as he finally pushes inside. You both gasp, a moan escaping your lips as he fills you completely, your bodies moving in a rhythm that feels as natural as breathing. He clings to you, his movements becoming more urgent, more desperate, and you cling back just as fiercely, not wanting this moment to end.
“I won't stop anymore." he murmurs, his voice a low rumble against your ear, and you know he means it — neither of you want to stop.
Kento’s words hang heavy in the air, igniting something primal within you. You shift your hips, pressing down harder, taking him deeper, and a guttural sound escapes his lips, his hands digging into your waist as if he’s afraid you might disappear.
He starts moving, thrusting up into you with a roughness that takes your breath away. You hold onto his shoulders for balance, your nails digging into his skin, each thrust sending ripples of pleasure through your body.
You couldn't help but groan over and over with every sensual movement, the windows fogging up as the air grows thick with your mingled breaths and moans.
Kento’s mouth is everywhere — on your neck, your collarbone, your breasts. His lips are hot, leaving trails of fire across your skin. He sucks and nips, marking you as his.
And it makes you gasp, makes you arch closer, needing more, craving everything he can give you. Your body moves on instinct, rolling your hips against him, each motion driving him deeper until you feel like you can’t take it anymore.
“More, more….Oh—” you whisper, a plea escaping your lips. He groans in response, tightening his grip on you, his hips slamming into yours with a desperate rhythm.
He shifts, one hand sliding down between your bodies, his fingers finding your sensitive nub. He circles it, presses down, and you cry out, your body clenching around him as the sensations intensify, as every nerve feels like it's on fire.
The sound of skin against skin fills the car, mingling with the soft creak of leather and the panting breaths escaping both of you.
Kento’s pace quickens, his thrusts becoming more erratic, more urgent. “God, you feel so good.” he murmurs, his voice ragged, almost broken.
He leans in, his forehead pressing against yours, his eyes searching yours for something — maybe reassurance, maybe something deeper.
"Tell me you want this." he breathes, his thumb circling faster.
“I want it,” you gasp, your voice trembling with need. “I want you, Kento… don't stop, please…”
That seems to be all he needs. He growls low in his throat, his grip tightening as he thrusts into you with renewed fervor, each movement harder, deeper, pushing you both to the edge of oblivion. Your hands clutch his hair, pulling him closer as you feel the coil tightening in your belly, threatening to snap.
He shifts again, angling his hips to hit that perfect spot inside you, and you scream, the sound raw and needy, your body trembling. You can feel the heat pooling, feel the tension building to an unbearable point.
He leans back slightly, watching you with hooded eyes, and the sight of him — pupils blown wide, lips parted, sweat slicking his skin — sends a new wave of desire crashing through you.
“Come for me, baby.” he commands, his voice a gravelly whisper. “Let me feel you.”
The words push you over the edge, your body convulsing around him as you shatter, pleasure ripping through you like a tidal wave. Kento groans, feeling you clench around him, and he thrusts a few more times before he’s there too, his own release surging through him with a low, guttural sound.
You collapse against him, both of you panting, bodies trembling and slick with sweat. For a moment, you just stay there, wrapped in each other’s arms, feeling the aftershocks of what you’ve just shared. He strokes your back gently, his breath still uneven, his heart pounding against yours.
“Are you okay?” he asks softly, his voice filled with concern, his thumb brushing a strand of hair from your face.
You smile, your fingers tracing the lines of his jaw. "More than okay, baby." you whisper, leaning in to kiss him again, tasting the salt of your shared exertion on his lips. "I don't want this to end.”
“I missed you.” He whispered lowly as he pressed a kiss on your palm. “More than you ever could know.”
You smiled at him. “Me too, my love.”
“I want to come home….and make things right.” Your husband tells you, his eyes tortured by desperation. “I want to make it up to you.”
“I know.” You nodded at him, leaning forward and kissing his chin. “Just come home. We’ll figure it out….like we always do.”

i: the establishing kiss.
contrary to popular belief, oscar's love language is physical touch. he doesn't let it show all that much, but when he feels safe with someone, he doesn't stop showing it.
take lando, for example.
the first time he kisses lando, they're in japan in 2023. the brit is initially confused and a little bit shocked, taken aback by the sudden change in oscar's demeanor, but quickly learns to reciprocate.
lando had been endlessly yapping about something or other, oscar hadn't really been paying attention, but when his engineer poked his head in to summon oscar for a quick check in about potential tyre strategies, oscar stood, pressed a kiss to lando's cheek, and was about to walk out of the room before he heard his teammate short circuit.
"shit, sorry. it was an automatic reflex. is it... was that okay?" oscar had backpedaled, completely ignorant to the flush that immediately flooded lando's summer-tanned skin.
"y- yeah, it's fine, i just... wasn't expecting it."
oscar takes that as permission to continue the goodbye kisses.
ii: on the forehead.
the second time, lando is clinging to oscar's arm in his sleep, the left side of his body plastered to oscar's right and his head resting on oscar's shoulder. they're heading back to the MTC on the team jet after qatar, and frankly, oscar understands lando's exhaustion. the heat that weekend was entirely unbearable to the point where multiple teams, including mclaren, were genuinely concerned for their drivers' and pit crews' safety, and most, if not all, of the drivers had reported feeling unwell in their cars. the fact that he and lando had somehow managed to scrape a double podium together despite the brutal conditions was astounding.
lando shifts a bit in his sleep, the crown of his head resting in the nook between oscar's jaw and his shoulder, and a protective impulse hits oscar like a freight train. he tilts his head just so, pressing his lips to lando's forehead gently enough so that he doesn't wake, instead sighing delicately in oscar's arms and shifting impossibly closer.
oscar lays his head on top of lando's and passes out within minutes, the comforting weight of lando's body on his lulling him into the deepest sleep he's gotten in weeks.
iii: on the cheek.
the next kiss occurs inside the MTC, and this time, it's lando's lips on oscar's skin.
immediately after being released from the team debrief meeting that stretches on, in lando's entirely correct opinion, for an unnecessarily long amount of time, he all but throws himself into oscar's arms, and oscar gladly accepts, wrapping his own arms around lando's waist and burying his face into the soft fabric of lando's hoodie. thankfully, lando had quickly caught on to the fact that reciprocating oscar's physical touch is not only acceptable but also welcomed and encouraged, so he'd begun initiating hugs and slotting himself underneath oscar's arm more frequently in the past weeks.
"hello to you, too," oscar murmurs into lando's hoodie, taking comfort in the feeling of lando's arms around his body.
"'m so happy you're okay," lando mumbles, his face tucked into the crook of oscar's neck between his jaw and his shoulder. "you... you are okay, right?" he pulls back briefly, looking up at oscar with concerned eyes that search oscar's own, scanning for any signs of discomfort or pain but finding none.
"i'm okay. are you?" lando's eyes slip shut with a nod, the most delicate of smiles tugging at his lips.
"yeah, i'm good."
"good." lando pulls back, much to oscar's disappointment, the stale, conditioned air of the conference room replacing the comforting warmth of lando's body almost immediately. sensing that the hug is now over, oscar lets his hands drop, settling awkwardly at his sides.
fuck it, oscar thinks. "you wanna get dinner?"
lando sighs, scrubbing a hand down his face. "i don't know, mate, i'm pretty beat. breakfast tomorrow?"
had lando not been focused on noticing how scuffed his trainers are, he would've seen the way oscar's lips fell into his signature pout. instead, he hears a quiet "oh, okay," before looking back up and smiling faintly. "i'll text you?"
oscar sounds like a kicked puppy.
"oh, come here, you muppet." lando's left arm wraps around oscar's shoulders and his right hand holds oscar's chin, his lips on oscar's cheek, and... yeah. that's exactly what oscar needed. "where do you wanna get dinner?"
iv: on the neck.
it's early february, and they're finally back in woking to film some teaser content before pre-season tests in bahrain.
"mm, i missed you," lando says, tilting his head back as oscar mouths at his neck, and oscar hums in response. of course, oscar takes that opportunity to graze his teeth across the delicate skin of lando's neck, which, in turn, makes lando whine.
when oscar pulls back to catch his breath, his mouth goes dry, a stark contrast to the spit-shiny side of lando's neck. the fact that the buttons of his team kit polo are all completely undone and the collar is shoved to the side only adds to it, but his disheveled curls and flushed face really tie it all together with a pretty bow made of the finest ribbon oscar could ever imagine. "fuck, you look beautiful."
"osc," lando whines, and the look in his eyes can only be described as downright pathetic. his eyes are glassy, his lips parted and red from how furiously oscar had kissed them just minutes before, and his chest heaves with the panting breaths he's taking. it's only then that oscar notices- lando's hard.
+i: on the lips.
oscar hasn't really fully processed it yet. lando just got his maiden formula 1 win. he heard it on the radio, the replay of lando's overwhelmed cheers, screaming to his engineer that they did it, they finally did it.
it's only when his lips find lando's long after the podium ceremony, the lingering taste of champagne, sweat, and tears filtering itself onto his tongue, that he realizes just how real it is, and he can't even find it in himself to be mad that he wasn't in the points. "'m so proud of you," oscar says between kisses. "so fucking proud of you." the soft duvet of the hotel room bed wrinkle as lando squirms in an attempt to release some of the pent-up energy from all the adrenaline coursing through his body.
"fuck, osc..." lando's brain short circuits when he feels oscar's hands reach underneath his shirt, calloused fingertips on sensitive skin. "thank you." lando keeps smiling stupidly into the kisses oscar's pressing to his lips, hands scrabbling to grasp at whatever they can. oscar feels like every single sense in his body is heightened, and he's noticing every single detail about every single kiss he feels. the scent of champagne and sweat and lando's skin, the taste of something so distinctly lando that oscar doesn't think he'll ever be able to describe in words, and, above all, the feeling of lando's skin on his. desperate hands grabbing everywhere on oscar's body they can reach, the toned muscle of his abdomen beneath oscar's palms, lando's legs tight around his waist, bringing oscar impossibly closer to the tender skin on the inside of his thighs-
fuck.
he's hard.
"oscar," lando whines, pulling away ever so slightly to catch his breath. "fuck me."
what?
what the fuck?
oscar swears he's hearing things. the roar of engines, wheel guns, and fans' screams have finally gotten to him and he's suffering from either hallucinations or straight up hearing loss.
"what?"
"fuck me, please. there's lube and condoms in the bottom of my suitcase." and... fuck. stronger men have been defeated by less, so there's no way in hell oscar will be able to resist that, especially with how desperate lando sounds.
"where you hoping this would happen?" oscar stands, immediately mourning the loss of lando's body heat, but hastily rummages through the suitcase placed at the foot of the bed, easily locating the bottle of lube and a condom from the bottom of lando's suitcase, exactly where he said they'd be. he doesn't miss the way lando's cheeks flush even more as he nods, hands desperately fumbling to get his shirt off, just to have something to do with them. oscar grins and clicks his tongue, dropping the lube and condom next to lando's hip. "let's get these jeans off, yeah?"
"please." lando's hands fly to his pants, popping the button open and shoving the fly down before shimmying his legs out of the denim. a shuddering sigh pushes past his lips at the release of pressure, and oscar shoves his own jeans down, kicking his and lando's pants off of the bed. there's a faint dark spot on the front of lando's boxers, his erection tenting the fabric, and oscar's sure he looks no different.
"are you sure about this?" there's a nagging in the back of oscar's mind, telling him it's all the adrenaline from lando's maiden win, that this isn't actually what lando wants, that he's going to regret it in the morning... the tone of oscar's voice brings lando out of his haze, clarity returning to the race winner's eyes alongside something else that oscar can't currently pinpoint at the moment.
"do you want to do this?" that's what it is. concern. lando's voice is clear, lacking any of the previous whiny twinge it'd held just moments prior, and his hands come up to gently hold the side of oscar's neck, his fingertips brushing the short bits of oscar's hair. "if you don't want to do this, we can go out and get drunk and forget this ever happened." his eyes search oscar's, his multicolored irises inspecting for any sign of discomfort, hesitation, or uneasiness.
leaving is the last thing oscar wants to do. he knows that much.
with a deep, steadying breath and a shift of his hips- oh, fuck, that was a mistake, because now his clothed dick is laying in the juncture of lando's hip and thigh, and, instead of the thought-out words he was going to say, the only thing that spills past his lips is a moan and a breathy "stay" on the tail end of it. the muscles in his arms give out and he collapses on top of lando, his face tucked into the crook of lando's neck, and when he inhales, lando's fingers already raking soothing rows along his scalp, he smells champagne, sweat, and lando's body wash.
"stay."
"okay, osc. i can do that."
oscar isn't sure how long they lay there, lando's left hand resting in the small of oscar's back and his right rubbing soothing lines into oscar's scalp, but by the time his heart rate slows and his brain stops running a mile a minute, the desperation and speed that he was ready to fuck lando with has sunk out of his body. there's only one problem- well, rather, two problems, but one stems from the other. one: oscar and lando are both still hard. two: neither of them have the energy required for prep, sex, and aftercare.
lando is able to solve both of those problems, though.
"osc?"
"hm?"
"do you want me to get you off?" oscar's face flushes, a whine falling from his lips in embarrassment, but he nods into lando's neck. "yeah?" oscar nods again. "okay, baby. i'm gonna need you to get these off for me, though." he thumbs at the elastic waistband of oscar's boxers, and oscar is barely able to muster enough strength to push himself up and off of lando's chest to pull his boxers off and toss them aside before falling back onto lando. "can you roll over for me, baby?" okay, scratch that. now he summons the last of his strength to roll off of lando, wincing slightly when the long-forgotten bottle of lube and condom dig into his ribs.
"hey." lando's voice has a tenderness to it that oscar's never heard before, used to the constant energy and bubbly laughs, and it makes something stir deep in oscar's chest. before he can prod into it and try to figure out what it might be, though, lando's rolling over and slotting his left leg between oscar's, leaning down, and kissing oscar with a certain softness that leaves every point of contact with lando's body fizzling with electricity. it's a unique and beautifully intimate moment, chests pressed together and bodies touching everywhere they possibly can as hands grasp for places to hold the other closer.
oscar moans into the kiss, high and pathetic, when lando takes both of their cocks into his hand, and even dry, he thinks he could cum just like that.
"oh, fuck, lando-" oscar's eyes are screwed shut, panting as lando continues licking into his mouth, running his tongue along oscar's lips before dipping down to oscar's neck, mimicking the same actions there. lando can't form a verbal response, so he simply hums relishing in the taste of oscar's skin. the aussie doesn't want to admit just how keyed up he is, doesn't want to admit the fact that, with a little bit of lube and a little bit of movement, he'd be cumming onto lando's hand.
thankfully, though, lando seems to be in the same boat, and he makes that very well known with a perfectly timed gentle thrust of his hips forward and a slight loosening of his hand, and the sound that it pulls from oscar's throat can only be described as unholy. "osc..."
"like this, lando, please."
"fuck, me too." oscar jumps slightly when the cold lube hits his cock, but with the slide it adds and the grip around lando's big hand has around them both and the fact that he's completely caged in and every single sense is flooded with lando, lando, lando, the temperature difference is rapidly forgotten in favor of white-hot pleasure. he can't stop himself- his hips are canting up into lando's hand, and it just feels so, so good. oscar's ears aren't processing the difference between his moans and lando's, so all he knows is that there's sounds of sex filling the hotel room, the wet slide of his cock along lando's, and it's so much at once.
when lando's hips start moving, too, fucking into his own fist, oscar throws his head back into the fluffy pillow and groans so loud that he gets a flickering sense of sympathy for whatever neighbors may share a wall with this hotel room, but it's immediately wiped from his brain as lando's lips meet his once more.
oscar isn't sure how much time passes, his lips and tongue gliding along lando's and their hips fucking into lando's hand, but his ears finally process that lando's moaning his name, desperately mouthing at his neck. "oscar, aah, fuck, i'm gonna cum, please, 'm gonna cum-" and, well. oscar didn't think he had a thing for begging, much less a thing for his teammate begging, yet here he is.
"yeah. yeah, go for it. cum for me, baby." before oscar finishes talking, his words breathy and faint, lando's cumming with a cry, his hips shuddering as his cum paints his hand and oscar's cock and stomach in a pearly white. oscar looks down, and the sight he's met with is absolutely filthy. past the mop of lando's curly hair and sweat-shiny skin, he sees the way lando's muscles tense with every thrust and the way his dick is painted white with cum and lube.
"fuck, fuck, fuck, osc, love you, love you so much." and that's what sends him over the edge, muscles in his torso tensing as he grasps desperately at lando's shoulders.
"aah, lan- love you. love you."

lovesick - lee haechan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary -> haechan is sick, and you are more than happy to take care of him.
warnings -> friends but they have a crush on each other😱
haechan laid in bed, sniffling. he had pulled the comforter back onto his body and curled up.
on the TV was his favorite show, he was currently rewatching it whilst he fought off his cold with rest.
lord knows where he had caught it, but it was unfortunate. days after he had decided to start his trek to college by moving out, he was sniffling and sneezing.
thankfully, he was able to postpone the college signup and tour, and get help moving into his apartment.
“i thought I told you to cover up with the sheet, not the comforter, hyuck,” you slowly opened the door, holding a plastic bag. “i only left for fifteen minutes.” you pulled the thick blanket off of him and folded it at the end of the bed.
the mask covering your face made it hard to see your expression, so haechan returned eye contact with his big, beautiful, brown doe eyes. “i’m cold.”
“i know you get cold, but we have to bring your temperature down. and you refuse to eat ice cream”
“speaking of temperature, I have to take yours again.”
he sat up and pulled his knees to his chest. “because you want me to eat the kind that doesn’t taste as good.” haechan really wanted you to take off your mask, because.. he just wanted you to.
you were gorgeous, and admiring your face could probably cure his sickness.
you shook your head. “i bought an alternative,” a few treats were pulled out of the bag. “ice pops. they’re cheap, and they are basically shaved ice. you can eat as many as you want, anything for the sake of you getting better.”
the thermometer that you had also pulled out of the bag was placed in haechan’s mouth.
haechan pouted while it took his temperature, because of how babied he was right now. it was to get him better faster, but he was supposed to be an adult, moving out into his old place. yet here you were, taking care of him.
“did you get any rest?” you held his face in your hands. partly to just coddle him further.
the thermometer beeped, and you took it out.
102 degrees.
still lower than the previous day.
“no.. I feel like my insides are on fire,” his voice was nasally and cute, the entirety of his nose red and irritated.
“and that’s what the ice pops are for, hyuck,” you peeled off the seal and handed it to him.
he took it from you, and stuck it in his mouth. immediately, his body felt a little more at peace, and his muscles relaxed.
earlier, he tried eating ice.
all that did was hurt his teeth. this was a happy solution to that madness. “how many did you buy?” he mumbled around the pop.
“i bought six, because I knew you would like them. they’re pretty big, so it should last you today and tomorrow. and just so you know these aren’t meals.”
“yeah, yeah,” haechan rolled his eyes and looked back at the TV.
“while you’re occupied, let’s take the sheet off of you, too,” you climbed onto the bed and laid next to him, close enough for comfort, but far enough to keep him from heating up. “you need to rest, once you’re done, got it?”
again, he rolled his eyes, but laid his head against your shoulders. his legs were tucked close to his body.
the show was getting good.
even if he was with you, he wouldn’t want to miss any of it - despite the fact that he was watching it again.
the couple in the show were getting closer, and he could actually see their chemistry. “look, look, they-” haechan pouted.
the ending music of the episode was playing, just as it seemed they would kiss. “how long have you been sleeping..” he set the empty ice pop inside the bag and grabbed another one.
best take advantage of this moment. haechan let you rest back on the pillows, curling you into his side as much as he wanted while covering you up with the sheet.
for extra measure, he slipped the mask off, down and under your chin.
“much better.” haechan grinned proudly.
-
nearly two episodes down the line, he felt his eyelids starting to get heavy, and he began to miss a few seconds of the show at a time. as a boring and ineffective part played out, his eyes began to shut. just then, you decided to wake up.
“hyuck..” you groaned, sitting up. “you didn’t even take your medicine..” it took you several moments to realize that your mask was off, but when you did, you playfully slapped his arm.
“stop, stop! I just wanted to see your face,” haechan pouted for the nth time this visit. “i’ll take my medicine if you give me a kiss.”
you pulled the medicine out of the bag and measured it out. “if you get me sick, I will be so mad at you, lee haechan, because some of us have to function in the real world, as fully functioning adults.” you held his chin and gave him a prolonged peck before handing him his medicine.
“hey!” it was hard to tell what part of his face was blushing, and what was red from his cold.
the way that you nonchalantly acknowledged the feelings you had for one another is what really sealed the deal for him. “thank you,” haechan mumbled as he took the medicine.
“i’m going now, before I catch more germs than I can afford.”
he stood up and grabbed your hand. “goodbye.” haechan’s eyes were wide, and he was feeling much bolder now that he was satisfied and not feeling like his insides were an inferno. he wrapped his arms around your torso and laid his head on your shoulder.
“goodbye, hyuck, take care of yourself while i’m gone, okay?” you rubbed his back and kissed his head. “my phone is always on if you need me.”
haechan retreated back to his bed, where he listened to you leave, before pulling out his phone to text you an unnecessarily long series of heart themed emojis.

In High Cotton || Rafayel (m)
Tumblr media
Paring(s); LADS Rafayel x reader
Word count; 3,626
Themes; swearing, smut, plushie turning human (??), I write the word plushie a lot (I'm sorry), porn with a smidgen of plot, alternative universe
Warnings; Cunnilingus, fingering, slight choking, smidge of hair pulling, some degrading (if you squint), unprotected sex (wrap it up), some boob play, (do not expect a masterpiece of a smut— I didn't realize how rusty I was at writing them until I actually started 😞)
Notes; woah, 700ish notes on my most recent drabble! That's insane tbh. It almost feels like I should only write drabbles, and it wasn't even a smutty drabble either 🤔 I thought people were usually into smut?
Either way, I'm glad yall are liking it while I readjust myself to writing smut once again! I used to write smut SO much when I was younger and then I just stopped– but when I do write it again, it might have too much detail and I do apologize beforehand for that...speaking of, it's happening now btw! I'm going to try to write good smut for this. I got this idea for a short, one-shot hentai-ish Manga (it's called…”my plushie turned into a human” or something like that)
Also, lowkey, cotton doesn't even feel like a real word anymore 😭

Tumblr media
In High Cotton;
//this Southern idiom means “to be doing well or living a comfortable life”; in comparison, to be ‘in low cotton’ would mean you're having a bad day//
“What are you, a child? Stop carrying around that stupid plushie! It feels like you care more about that damn thing than our relationship.”
Your head whips around to stare at your partner through a glare.
Oh really now?
You care more about a stuffed piece of fabric in comparison to your almost five years of dating this person?? Yeah, right.
Your partner was just trying to deflect this situation away from the fact that you caught them cheating.
They were grasping at straws to throw the blame on you and your cherished plush was the only thing they could throw at you…pitiful.
You've had this little plushie since you were little and, honestly, you didn't even remember what show it was from– if it was on one. Your childhood friend gave it to you shortly before he moved away and you've since forgotten what he even looked like.
The only memory of him being the purple haired, humanoid plushie currently clasped between your hands as you fought the urge to throw it at your partner.
And, tired of your silence, your partner left your apartment shortly after.
Now, you were left alone with your plushie.
You slowly swipe your thumb back and forth over its pinkish-blue eyes as you ponder just why you cherished it so much. Why you cherished Raf so much.
Yeah, Raf. That's apparently the name of the plushie. That's what your mom claims you called it throughout the years, so you had no reason to change it.
But yeah. You were unsure why it never left your side.
You always kept it in your purse, in your shirt pocket– it almost felt like an emotional support doll, at this point.
Anyway, you stand up from the floor and go lock your door so your partner couldn't barge back inside the apartment, even if they wanted to. Then, you decide to go to bed. You were off work for the next few days, so you could finally get some well deserved rest.
You quickly get changed into your pajamas and curl up in the bed with Raf in your arms. Your hand resting against the red beret on its head, thumb gently brushing over the small black bead on top of the hat as you drift off to sleep.
You wake up feeling…warm? Too warm, in fact.
You know you fell asleep with the air conditioner on, so there's absolutely no reason for the room to feel as warm as it does.
You grumble under your breath, wanting to go back to sleep as quickly as possible, and keep your eyes shut as you try to kick out from under the covers. You soon realize you can't do this, because you feel an odd weight holding you down.
If your partner snuck back in, you swear to god—
But when you open your eyes, you're met with an unfamiliar sight.
It's…a stranger. In bed with you.
Their hair, however, was oddly familiar.
Purple hair…
Nah, no way. There's no way your plushie suddenly turned into a human, but that would definitely make you feel less anxious than assuming a stranger was in your home.
You take a deep breath and glance around for your plushie. If you can find it, then this man isn't your favourite stuffed animal and if you can't– well, it could've fallen into the floor. You won't sink into the delusion that this man was Raf, until that was your final option.
You couldn't find it with just your eyes, so you attempted to wiggle out of the man's grasp. However, this only causes him to hold you tighter, his arms squeezing around your waist as he pulls you further into his bare chest.
…bare chest?
You blink a few times. Your head is close enough to touch the man's chin.
Fuck it.
You put your hands on his chest and desperately try to pull away from him, full on struggling since you've decided to not care if you wake him up or not. He came into your house, why should you be accommodating toward him??
“Hmm?”
You hear his tired voice as he finally removes one arm from your waist to rub his eyes, and the moment he opens then, you have no choice but to accept that he was your plushie.
Seriously, like what normal human has pinkish-blue eyes?? No one. Unless he's wearing contacts, that is literally your comfort doll.
You know it sounds crazy, but how else would this random guy know what your plush looks like?? Especially enough to copy its looks perfectly.
“Oh. Good morning, Y/n.” He yawns, stretching his arms up and that's when you snap.
You quickly sit up and move away from him, holding a hand out in front of you. “What're you doing in my house? You're not…Raf, are you?”
“You recognize me!?” He almost blinds you with his innocently charming smile.
“You're…joking, right? I mean, seriously, how am I supposed to believe that?” You say, half asleep but clearly not buying this act. You run a hand through your hair, brows furrowed and you could feel a headache coming on.
“Oh…you don't believe me..” he frowns, sitting up against the pillows. “Hmm…what can I do to make you believe me?”
“Uh…say something that only someone who knows me would know?” You throw your hands up in the air, exasperatedly.
Come on, how the heck were you supposed to know?? Though, you'd probably believe him if he said something personal.
“Raf” brings his hand up to rest under his chin as he contemplates what to say. After a few moments of silence, you stand up from the bed.
“Alright, if you're not going to say anything, then–”
“When you were seven, you threw up and ran into your mom's room crying because you thought you were dying…uh, oh also, when you were ten, you were trying to ride a bike and busted your knee open when you fell– you have a scar from it. At eleven, you accidentally punched a kid in the face and got into your first fight– that you lost, by the way. And at sixteen, you were going to lose your virginity, but your ex said you had to get Raf off the bed and you said, and I quote, ‘the doll stays’.”
“Raf” looks at you after he finishes talking with an almost proud looking smile on his face and you tilt your head to the side.
You…
…what?
You had no other choice, but to believe him now.
The scar on your knee would've been the easiest to guess, but the others? But you don't want to seem too gullible…
You clear your throat, crossing your arms over your chest. “Tell me more before I make my decision.”
Surely he wouldn't say anything embarrassing, right?
“You've faked every orgasm with your current partner. You can only cum if—”
“Okay, okay!” You quickly place your hand over his mouth. Your face turns scarlet as you squeeze your eyes shut. “That's enough. I'll believe you for now.”
You feel something wet against your palm and jerk your hand back. “What the hell– did you just lick my hand??” You drag your hand against your pants to wipe it off, before shaking your head. “Look, go get dressed. I'm sure my ex has some clothes you can wear.”
You put an emphasis on ex, since you decided you weren't going to stay with that cheater the moment they left your apartment last night.
Then, you leave the room.
Honestly….Raf was a pretty decent roommate. Sure, he didn’t work, but you'd come back to a home-cooked meal after work every day. He'd do the laundry, the dishes, and he even painted on the side.
You weren't sure if he'd ever turn back into a plush, but you preferred him this way. With him as a human, you could talk about your day with someone, eat with someone…there's only one problem.
Personal space and…personal time.
You haven't been able to get off in almost a month– that's how long Raf has been human by now– and it has started to get to you. You usually aren't a very sexual person, but sometimes you just need to rub one out every now and again…and you can't with him constantly snuggled in the bed next to you.
Tonight was another night where you wouldn't be able to do what you wanted.
You let out a small sigh as you get settled in bed. The TV played a random show in the background as it illuminated the otherwise dark room. Raf laid next to you, one arm curled under the pillow so he could still watch the TV. He was shirtless too, so that made your conundrum even better.
“What's wrong?” He asks, not looking away from the TV and you quickly shake your head.
“It's nothing. Nothing at all.”
Raf shifts over to his side to look at your face, raising one of his eyebrows ever so slightly. “You haven't…Well, I mean, you usually do it once a week and it's been a month now–”
“Raf–” you sigh, covering his head with a pillow. “Shut up.”
He pulls the pillow down, so only his eyes are visible. “Do you still not see me as a man?”
“I don't want to talk about this right now.” You try to pull the pillow back over his face and he catches you by the wrist.
“I could make you feel way better than your ex did…” he trails off as he guides your hand to the front of his pajama pants.
You could visibly see a bump from over the covers and you choke on your spit as you felt something warm under your palm.
Something big.
“Raf…” you trail off, but you can't find the will to tell him to let it go.
His words made you curious…you wanted to know if sex could actually feel good or if he was just talking a big game.
What could he really know about sex, anyways?
He's only been human for a month now, so there's no way he could actually be good at it, right?
As you're lost in thoughts, your hand subconsciously squeezes his election and Raf tilts his head back, teeth sinking into his bottom lip to hold back a groan.
“Earth to Y/n.” He hums, snapping his fingers in front of your face. “Yes or no, cutie? I want explicit consent.”
You were battling with your thoughts, but you ultimately nodded your head.
“Use your words now. Your pretty lips aren't just there for show, are they?” The man taps his finger against your bottom lip and you let out an impatient sigh, “Yes, now can you please–”
Your words were silenced by Raf's lips crashing down against yours.
One of his hands ghosts down your body, fingers resting under the waistband of your pajama shorts, just a few inches from where you really wanted his touch. His other hand slides up your shirt, cupping a breast.
You feel the bed dip underneath you as Raf swings a leg over your body, fully pinning you to the bed as he continues his assault against your lips.
His tongue swipes across your bottom lip, but you playfully refuse to let him in. In retaliation, Raf’s fingers pinch around your nipple and harshly tug at it. A gasp escapes you and he takes this opportunity to slip his tongue past your open lips.
The only time your lips part is when Raf leans back to tug his shirt off and takes off yours as well.
Now shirtless in front of the man, you can't help but feel a little self conscious.
Though Raf quickly dissuades your self doubt by dipping his head down to latch onto your nipple. His hand finally moved further into your pants. His index finger resting on your clit and you arch your hips up, trying to force him to move.
Your thigh stings in pain as you feel Raf's palm collide with your skin.
“Patience.” He murmurs against your chest.
His fingers draw lazy circles against your clit and, while it is pleasurable, you want more.
You dip your hand past his waistband and grab onto his dick. Your hand could barely wrap fully around it and you could only imagine how it would feel. It felt like it would hurt…a little. But what's a little pain?
Your hand lazily strokes Raf's dick, thumb dragging over his tip to collect a few drops of precum and that's when the man finally snaps.
His fingers move lower. His middle finger slowly glides inside of you and he gives you a few thrusts with his singular finger, before adding a second one. With both fingers sheathed inside, he makes a ‘come-hither’ motion with every thrust of his digits.
“R-Raf– wa—ah— wait..” Your nails dig into the skin of his shoulder while your other hand pauses its movements. You try to hide your face in your shoulder, but Raf seizes your chin with a hand.
“Don't look away now, princess. I wanna see your face. Wanna see just how good I'm making you feel.” He tsks and pulls away for a moment.
He strips you of your bottoms, tossing them to the side as his big hands grip your thighs. His palm slaps the newly exposed skin before he taps your hands.
“Hold your legs up for me and don't drop them.”
You want to question his words, but don't. Instead, you wrap your arms under your knees and pull them as close to your chest as you can. It was, honestly, a really embarrassing position, but you couldn't help but get even more wet.
Your juices were tacky against your thighs and even dripping down onto the sheets below you.
“Raf…” you whine, wondering what's taking him so long since you expected him to fuck you already. But instead of his cock, you feel something else.
You feel something warm and wet against your clit, and a strangled noise comes up from your throat as Raf flicks his tongue against your pussy. His fingers going back to your entrance to slip inside as he wraps his lips around your clit.
Your head tilts back as moans spill from your lips. Raf's skilled fingers working at your center while he tongue draws figure-eights on your clit.
“R-Raf, inside. ‘Wanna cum with you inside, please?” You finally manage to say, your nails digging into your legs.
Your heart stutters in your chest as Raf makes eye contact as he eats you out. Only pausing to respond to you, his fingers still moving.
“You gotta be more specific, princess. I am inside you right now.” He teases.
As you open your mouth to answer, he curls his fingers and they just barely brush your g-spot.
“I want your di– ah, Raf, right there!” Your hips jerk with every thrust of his fingers and you can feel yourself growing closer to your first orgasm, but Raf has other plans.
As you squeeze your eyes shut, preparing for your climax, suddenly you feel empty.
When you open your eyes, you notice that Raf is licking his fingers clean.
A lazy smirk tugs at the man's lips and his hand disappears into his pants, freeing his dick from its confines.
Your eyes are immediately drawn to his angry, red tip. The glistening precum. The way his hand drug against the length of it.
“Hey, my eyes are up here!”” Raf snaps his fingers with a pout. “Geez, you really know how to make a man feel like a pack of meat.” He taps the tip of his dick against your clit and your hips jump.
“Ah, what's the magic word, cutie?” His hand pushes down on your hips, effectively pinning them to the bed as he smears his precum across your clit.
“I…” You grit your teeth, squeezing your thighs before you finally let them go and hold your arms out. “Please fuck me.”
Raf's arms wrap around you as he finally pushes his tip inside and his voice of reason finally snaps. He was originally going to take it slow, to give you time to adjust, but the feeling of your tight, warm walls around his cock makes him unable to think straight.
Your legs wrap around his waist as he thrusts into you with reckless abandon. Though there is a bit of skill to his thrusts, there's also a smidgen of inexperience mixed within it.
“You're so tight, cutie. Do you like my cock that much?” He hums, his lips dragging against the skin of your neck. He firmly presses his lips down, parting them slightly to suck a painful bruise on your neck.
His hips continue to snap forward. His cock languidly pumps in and out of your pussy. The obscene noise of skin slapping against skin, the sound of your bodies coming together, fills the otherwise silent room.
His thumb dips down to make quick circles against your lip as his cock brushes against your g-spot and he claims your lips once more.
Your nails dig into his shoulders, dragging up his skin to leave deep red marks in their wake. Your moans are swallowed by Raf's lips. His tongue collides with yours and you briefly fight for dominance. You ultimately lose, though you didn't put up much of a fight.
The man pulls out and you're about to complain, but suddenly you're flipped onto your knees. Raf presses his palm into the small of your back and your face slams into your pillows.
His cock re-enters as he thrusts, his palm cracks down across your ass. You can't hide the moan that slips from your parted lips and Raf raises a brow.
“Oohh, someone's a bit of a pain slut?”
With this new knowledge, Raf pulls you up by your hair. Your back against his chest and his other hand glides over your body. His two fingers make quick circular motions against your clit and he releases your hair, instead wrapping his hand around your throat.
“R–Raf, please. ‘M so close.” Another noise slips from your lips as his cock just barely kisses your g-spot and you can feel his breath against your ear. “You gonna cum for me?” He presses a small kiss on your shoulder, his hand squeezing around your neck as he quickens his thrusts.
“Uh-huh…” you nod your head, teeth sinking into your bottom lip as you try to hold back your moans. You could feel your juices soaking your thighs, could hear the evidence of your arousal with every thrust.
With one last precise thrust that brushes your g-spot, you cum.
You tilt your head back with a choked cry, your hips jerking as your walls spasm around his cock.
“Princess…” Raf groans, his hands tightly gripping your hips as he surges forward. Your body falls forward and your hands go out to steady yourself as he continues to harshly thrust. “Inside or out?”
You take a moment to think before you turn your head to the side, meeting his eyes. “Out, please.”
Raf flips you over onto your back once more and after a few more pumps, he pulls out. His hand quickly strokes his cock before his head tilts back and he moans. His tip shoots out strings of cum, painting your stomach and chest with white ropes.
“Fuck…” he takes a few breathes before you meet each other's eyes.
Then, you both laugh giddily and he dips his head down to gently kiss you.
“I'll go grab a washcloth to clean you up.” He smiles against your lips before he gets off the bed to head into the bathroom.
You sit up and stretch out your sore limbs while you look around for your phone to check the time. “Huh…I could've sworn it was on the bed..” You click your tongue and sigh, sliding off the bed to check if it fell into the floor.
Your hand pats around under your bed and you let out a small squeak of surprise as your hand brushes against something soft. You jerk your hand back, but notice your phone was on the floor. You press a hand against your chest to try and still your fast beating heart. Then, you turn on your phone's flashlight to look under your bed.
“Wait…” you squint, noticing something that looks oddly familiar and once you fish it out, your eyes widen.
It…was Raf.
Slightly dusty since it had been under your bed for a few months, but…this was most certainly Raf, your beloved plushie.
Your head slowly turns in the direction of your bathroom with wide eyes. If your plush Raf was in your hands then…who was in your bathroom?
The door swings open and Raf– no, the stranger walks out from your bathroom with a washcloth in hand.
“I think I'm going to need to do the laundry soon. This is the last clean on– oh, you found it.” The purple-haired man leans against the doorway, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I– who…” you look from your cherished plushie to him. “You're not even…”
Then, he chuckles.
“You ever noticed the little black ball on his beret?” He taps a finger against his temple. “I gave you that when we were little…been watching you ever since.” He has a smile on his lips as if this was a normal thing to admit.
“You're—”
“Highly intelligent? Devilishly handsome?”
“—insane.”
“No, silly girl. My name is Rafayel. Don't worry, I'll fuck you a few more times so you can remember it.”
Tumblr media
I tried my best and that's all that matters tbh 😭 I think it seems so bad because it's in second person and I'm used to writing smut in first. But I'm hoping I'll get better at it with practice!
Either way, I'm sure this isn't the worst smut you've read so I hope you enjoyed it!
Also, sorry there isn't a drabble this week! I might write one soon since I've got two days off 🤔 I'm not sure yet tbh

Tumblr media
Summary : After a nightmare, you come to Cloud for comfort. In other words, you both sweetly make out.
Pairing : Cloud Strife x Reader
Word Count : 1.015 words
Warnings : fluff, very brief mention of nightmare, kisses.
Tumblr media
It was very late at night but you still decided to knock at Cloud’s room door.
You were a member of the Avalanche group and you had to admit that during missions you were more likely to have nightmares. You were stressed and you wanted to be useful in the team, you were putting way too much pressure on yourself and that often lead you to sleep awfully. The only thing on your mind during these moments, was to seek comfort towards the only person that you trusted since your childhood : Cloud.
Cloud was used to you knocking at his door, he already knew the reason why, as he opened his door to see your trembling figure. You held your favorite plushie in your right hand, that Cloud started to know all too well, and your face silently asked if you could sleep with him. Cloud always tried to keep his usual cold demeanor when he saw you like this but how could he refuse anything to you when he saw you silently pleading for comfort ? You were rubbing your eyes sleepily as Cloud gently took you by the arm to guide you to his bed, making you lay down and putting the covers back on you before joining you on the other side of the bed.
At first, when you would come to him in similar circumstances in the past, Cloud slept with his back facing you, in hopes that you wouldn’t notice how flustered he felt in your presence. But it was different now, Cloud no longer felt embarrassed as he faced you, his eyes softly looking into yours as a ray of moonlight shined through his curtains to highlight your now calming features. Hesitantly Cloud reached out to carefully let his thumb caress your cheekbones.
« Feel better ? »
You nodded at him as your eyes closed at the feeling of his comforting gesture, almost leaning into his touch, as Cloud’s gaze never left your face. His eyes dreamily admired every details of your face and body, how your furrowed brows slowly eased, the way your breathing became calmer, as a small smile, that only Cloud could notice, started to make its way on your lips and your fingers that silently reached to grab hold of Cloud’s clothes, making the both of you even closer. Cloud quietly chuckled at you as he murmured to himself.
« You know, I wonder why you keep on trying to sleep in your own room if my bed is that comfier »
You halfway opened your eyes to look at him with a smile.
« Is that an offer Cloud ? »
He looked the other way as he thought about it.
« More or so »
Every time the two of you were sharing a moment together, your bond would strengthen, the words exchanged would get nicer and the gestures more lovely. Cloud grew very fond of you, as did you with him, it was very much obvious to everyone.
As your gaze started to linger on his face, alternating between his eyes and his lips, the room faded into a comfortable silence, Cloud’s eyes mirroring yours.
You were the one to initiate something. Your body came closer to his, sharing his warmth as your left hand delicately rested on his cheeks, caressing his skin as your face was inches away from his. With the proximity, you shared the breath of one another and you looked back at Cloud’s eyes to see if he was okay with this. The answer was more than obvious as his gaze lingered on your own lips. His right hand placed itself on your jaw as his mouth found yours into a soft shy kiss that grew into more small kisses. Cloud didn’t find the will to stop kissing you nor did he wanted to. Your kisses were as shy as his as you just enjoyed the intimate moment you were sharing with him.
Cloud’s kisses became needier after a few minutes as his right hand hesitantly went to hold your waist as he squeezed it gently, making you let out a little gasp out of suprise. Cloud took advantage of it and curiously put his tongue into your mouth, the new sensation making Cloud softly moan into your mouth as he gripped your waist just a bit tighter. As Cloud’s breathing and yours became slightly heavier, you broke the kiss for a moment as lovely gazes were exchanged.
Your curious lips went to pressed sweet open mouthed kisses on the column of his throat, making Cloud sigh in appreciation before he took your face in his hands to make you look back at him. He desperately needed to feel your lips on his once again, like you held the answers to all his questions. His kisses were more intense and warm than before but still held the affection that he felt for you. The only sounds that could be heard in the room were your mouths almost making love to each other and the little gasps that slipped between kisses. After a moment the kisses exchanged started to get lighter, almost like a feather-like touch. Cloud’s hand gently caressed your jaw as he slowly covered your face in kisses, making your smile grow in affection. A kiss was placed on your forehead, between your brows, on your nose, cheeks, on the tip of your left ear and a last one on the corner of your lips.
You closed your eyes as sleep was starting to envelop your body in a soothing embrace, a content smile still lingering on your face as Cloud put a stray lock of hair behind your ear. He whispered to you with gentle eyes, as his nose playfully rubbed with yours before Cloud’s arms enveloped you protectively, like he was guarding his most vulnerable treasure.
« Sleep well »
That night you slept without any nightmares in your mind but you weren’t the only one that slept soundly, it was one of the first nights Cloud didn’t have nightmares as well, as his form didn’t let go of yours.

Bad Idea, Right? - Part 6
Eris x Reader/Azriel’s Daughter
Eris and Y/N seem to have a knack for putting themselves in unsavory situations. Bonus: Eris has a flashback to the night they met.
Part 4 Part 5 Part 7
Tumblr media
Warnings: Alcohol, Language, Attempted SA
Oh gods. I rolled over slowly only to be met with a wave of nausea and a killer headache. I blinked several times, enough to bring the bedside table into view where a glass of water and a hangover tonic awaited me - at least I had the foresight to brace myself for the impending hell that awaited me after such an intoxicating night out.
It was an effort to pull my arm out from beneath the covers of my bed - which felt so much softer and warmer than usual. I drank a few sips of water and the tonic quickly cured the unease in my stomach but the remnants of the headache still remained. My impetuous little shadows tugged at me to get out of bed but it was just so comfortable - tuning them out I yanked my comforter over my head and drifted back asleep.
——————
Eris
Eris started awake as Y/N roused slightly from her sleep, just enough to find the tonic he’d left on his bedside table for her. Several hours ago, he’d settled in a lounge chair on the opposite side of the bed after she’d spent an hour with her head in the commode, alternating between heaving and berating him for being a “shady motherfucker” all while he held her silken hair back and rubbed soothing circles on her back.
Once she’d completely emptied herself of both the contents of her stomach and insults, she insisted she needed to bathe herself - managing to stumble into the bath tub with her clothes still on and demand “something fried and something bubbly, good sir.”
She refused to undress so he could fill the tub, so he left her there to her own devices while he torched some breaded chicken tenderloins in the kitchen - his fire power really came in handy in times like this - where a five foot whatever heathen was demanding sustenance ASAP. “High Lord my ass.” He mumbled to himself as he carried a tray of seltzer water and her fried chicken into the bathroom… where she was sound asleep in the tub.
Good lord, what had he gotten himself into with this beautiful mess. The mother only knew.
So he’d carried her to the bed, feeling a bit sleazy for changing her out of her dress while asleep but it was either let her rest in a liquor and vomit splattered dress that did everything for her curves and absolutely nothing for comfort… or change her out of it and into one of his cotton tees. Perhaps his male ego beamed slightly at the thought of her sleeping in his shirt but he assured himself that her comfort was his top priority.
He warmed the sheets using his fire magic and tucked her in before setting out the tonic and settling in on the lounge.
————————-
Y/N
When I reawoke, it must have been hours later. Whoever came in and opened the curtains could go to hell as the sunlight filtering in assaulted my eyes.
“Mother’s tits.” I groaned out as I stretched, careful not to turn my head too quickly in an effort of staving any sudden returns of nausea or shooting pains from the headache.
As my eyes slowly began adjusting to the damned sunlight, three things stood out. One: my shadows were swirling in front of me and intertwining with my fingers excitedly. Two: Someone was….cooking? In my bedroom. And as my vision fully cleared, three: This wasn’t my room, it was a fucking studio apartment.
“Owww.” I whined as I turned my head toward the direction of whatever greasy delight was cooking only to see red hair pulled up into a bun, a glorious muscular bare back hindered only by the tie of an apron, and delicious toned legs exposed by cloth shorts hemmed at the mid-thigh.
Mother’s tits indeed. Just when I thought the bastard couldn’t get any hotter.
An opportunist, traitor of a shadow shot away from me, caressing his arm as it handled a pan on the stove.
“Morning sunshine.” Eris purred, not even turning to look at me.
I scrunched my nose, lowering my tone into that of disgust - a futile effort to appear unphased by the sight before me “Why are you here? And where the fuck are we?”
“Always a pleasure to see you too, little one. Breakfast first?”
I desperately wanted to object but the bacon he was cooking smelled delicious and fuck if he didn’t look delicious too.
“Whatever.” I muttered, rolling my eyes at either his ability to tolerate whatever I threw at him or myself for being so internally captivated by the half-naked high lord cooking breakfast for me.
He didn’t need to turn around for me to feel the smirk forming on his lips as he began plating our food.
Breakfast was….. silent. Eris sat in a chair watching me with mischief in his eyes and I did my best to focus on the borderline ecstasy inducing combination of grease and whatever smokey, apple seasoning he’d flavored the bacon with.
After a long ‘bout of silence I finally gave in to his game. “Alright Eris,” His name rolled off my tongue like more honey and less venom than intended. “I’ll bite. Where are we anyway? And how?”
“I told you last night, little love. We’re at my apartment.”
Hazy memories rolled back just a bit. A blur of red, a steadying arm, and-
“In Velaris?”
“Is it so shocking that I invest my funds into properties. How many palacial homes do Rhysand and Feyre have now? More than three, yes?”
I crossed my arms. A bit like a petulant child, yes, but it did the trick as it shelved my breasts perfectly enough that Eris was caught off guard. Good.
I leaned forward, the gap in the neck of my - his shirt allowing a glimpse of the unclothed breasts beneath.
“Quit deflecting.” biting my lip, I leaned in a bit closer tracing a finger along his jaw, over the stubble shadowing the sharp angles of it, my palm then meeting his cheek just lightly enough to make his eyelids flutter as he leaned into it.
A fresh wave of the hangover nausea churned through my stomach causing me to tense, slightly drawing back and breaking the trance I had him in.
Eris tsk’d “Uh uh, clever girl.” His eyes darkened as that stupid, perfect sly smirk of his crossed over his features. “You won’t seduce answers from me, though I do love to see you try.” Letting out a sigh that I could have sworn was a bit condescending he continued, “Had you not ghosted me following our delightful night after Starfall, you’d have known.”
“Perhaps Eris, had you not kept information from me and threatened MY High Lord with violence over whatever you’re keeping from me then I would not have resorted to such measures.”
Eris leaned back in his chair, one leg arrogantly crossed over the other as one elbow rested on an arm of the chair and the other hand’s thumb and pointer finger rubbed curiously at his jaw.
“And how- pray tell, do you know of such violent threats? Nothing came through my end of the bargain tattoo so I know that Rhysand did not inform you.”
“No. You should be smarter, High Lord, about what you say beyond established wards. You never know what little ears may be prying.”
Realization crossed Eris’s features as he pieced together who had heard him.
“I simply stated that there would be retaliation. Your High Lord would reciprocate similarly if there were facets of my end of the bargain being broken.”
I leaned closer, inches away from Eris’ face.
“You can tell me what information is so important that a bargain is required to withhold it from me - or I can leave now.”
I could have sworn pain crossed his face briefly before he cooly said, “I’d hate to see you go, my little shadow but I always enjoy watching you leave.”
“I’m sure you do.” I stood up, swaying my hips as I walked toward the door, powering through the lingering hangover symptoms.
“Taking my shirt with you?”
“Ah, you’re right. Best to leave the dirty laundry here.”
Facing Eris and making a show of so slowly pulling the shirt up over my head, giving a perfect view of the rise and the bounce of my breasts as I tossed his shirt back to him.
“Your dress is covered in vomit and liquor.” Hand gesturing lazily toward the dress hanging over the bathroom door knob.
“Guess you’ll have to stay a while longer.
And damn my stubbornness because this was not a battle I was about to let him win.
“I’m winnowing home, Eris. Fuck the dress.”
“Wards extend to the street, sweetheart.”
I faltered but only for a moment.
I’ve never been ashamed of my body but strutting naked into the streets of Velaris wasn’t ideal.
Eh - C’est la vie
I grinned. A sharp, wicked thing.
“Don’t you fucking dare.” He growled.
Was - was that jealousy? Possessiveness?
And with that, I strutted out of his apartment in only a lace thong.
“Wait!” He called but I didn’t miss a beat.
As I walked into the street, onlookers gawked but I paid no mind. “Y/N! Stop. Come back!” He yelled, grabbing my wrist right as I winnowed to the back door of my home.
“What the fuck was that?” Eris growled, voice low with anger and something else.
I turned to face him as he slung a jacket he’d grabbed on his way out over my shoulders, barely hiding my ass and doing nothing to cover my tits but it’s the thought that counts I suppose.
Had I not still been a bit inebriated from the prior night perhaps I would have remembered I had shadows at my disposal to give at least the illusion of modesty but -
I sobered up quickly as my father stepped out of the door in his leathers - likely headed to meet Uncle Cass before heading to Windhaven - only to be greeted by his mostly naked daughter and half-naked High Lord of the Autumn Court.
Icy rage and total discomfort crossed his features, his shadows shooting out to cover me.
The war of emotions was palpable as he clenched his fists, siphons glowing, eyes shooting daggers straight through Eris.
Eris tensed before dropping his typical arrogant bastard mask into place. “Greetings Spymaster.” An arrogant smirk plastered onto his face.
Father’s jaw clenched and his fists fought a battle of wills as if he’d beat Eris to a pulp right then and there. Finally he managed to ground out, “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

Eris flashback
The prior night
Y/N let out a rather loud snore in her drunken slumber, stirring him from the sleep he’d just begun drifting off to. Her hair had fallen over her face and he couldn’t resist leaning forward and gently tucking it behind her ear.
“Mm, Eris” she whispered in her sleep followed by the slightest upward twitch of her lips.
Fuck - it was so hard sometimes. He wasn’t a perfect male but he did his best to do right by those he cared about.
Sometimes he had to distance himself from her to prevent himself from laying it all bare - tell her everything instead of letting her believe him to be the “sneaky motherfucker”. She was so young, sure in fae society five years, fifty years, five-hundred years age difference, nobody batted an eye but he’d lived so much life compared to her less than thirty.
Amusement and longing rang through him as he took care of her intoxicated ass tonight, reminding him of the night out that brought them together in the first place.
Lucien and Vassa were busy in the Day Court and Adish was going out with a couple of friends - visiting a new tavern in a recently modernized town in the northeastern territory of the Autumn Court. The town itself was safe but there were still the ocasional ruffians passing through. Lucien had requested that Eris send eyes out to ensure their protection. Something urged him to just go himself and damn, he’d never stop being grateful that he did.
The evening itself was boring. Mostly high fae but even lesser fae who had become adjusted to the “new era” ushered in with his reign came out to the tavern. There were harsh punishments for unjust violence within the Autumn Court now. Still, there was so much change needed but it would come in time. His people were rather set in their ways but a new justice system was starting to usher in change.
He nursed a beer in a corner booth, catching the eyes of plenty of fae nearby but managing to avoid the attention of Adish and his crew - which included Nyx Archeron and the little Shadowsinger who he’d heard was quickly rising in their ranks.
Nyx and Adish had both wandered off with a couple of gorgeous females with the classic red hair of his Court along with interestingly enough, Tamlin’s daughter. Layla - if he recalled correctly.
Interesting.
His attention caught as he noticed two brutes who were definitely not from here vying for the little Shadowsinger’s attention. He chuckled to himself as she waived them off, turning back to a group of females she’d stumbled out of the bathroom with. She danced without a care, holding one hand in the air as her shadows steadied her wrist in an effort to prevent spillage.
He’d give it to Rhysand’s Shadowsinger and the Archeron sister who nearly broke his brother’s heart, they passed down all of their best genetics to the stunning female on the dance floor.
The males continued irritating her, going so far as to cut her off from the group by dancing their way between them. She kept dancing but he could have sworn she was letting them cut her off, despite the obvious malicious intentions the males had for her. As they backed her to a quieter portion of the dance floor the larger male grabbed her wrist, tugging her towards the door. She shook her head no but he kept pulling as the other male corralled her from behind. Eventually she waived off the grip on her wrist and walked out with them.
Fuck. He really had no interest in lighting anybody’s asses up tonight but someone had to get the trash out of his court. And despite the fact that he and Azriel were never the best of friends, his daughter deserved more than to be ignored due to their indifferences.
So he sighed, exited out the front door and strode toward the alleyway the other entrance had led to. As he rounded the corner, he came to a halt, lurking in the shadows and taking in a sight that he hadn’t anticipated.
The Shadowsinger sat unbothered on top of a barrel with an elbow on the knee that crossed over her opposite leg. Her face filled with complete and utter boredom as she rolled her eyes at the males bound in shadow before her.
“You couldn’t have just let me be, huh boys? I was having fun with the girls in there too.
I suppose I should thank you though. After all, you won me my next three rounds of drinks. You see, the girls and I had a bet on how quickly you’d give in to your sleazy nature.
One of them bet two hours, another an hour, and me? I know a pig when I see one. Less than thirty minutes from the first time you hit on me and, well, here we are boys.”
The males couldn’t speak through the gags her shadows had placed on their mouths but the rage was apparent in their squeals.
“Anyway, since you were so desperate to find release tonight, I’ve decided to help… remedy the situation.”
With a snap of the wrist and the exception of their underwear, their clothes disappeared while the shadows binds remained in place.
She gave them each a once over and a disapproving laugh, withdrawing the shadows that were gagging them.
“Alright boys, I’ve so generously removed your gags as a thank you for helping me win my bet. You may kiss eachother now.”
The males gaped. The burlier of the two seemed to lack the understanding of the fact that he was at the disadvantage in this situation. “You little whor-“
“Uh uh.” She wagged her finger. Shadows aiming at him like daggers. “That’s no way to speak to a lady. Not that it seems anyone ever taught you manners. Pity.”
The males were visually appalled. Glancing back and forth between her and eachother as if saying “what now?”
Both males fought the restraints to no avail as the little Shadowsinger grinned with amusement at the predicament she’d put them in.
“Honestly, I should just have my shadows castrate you. Would that be more appealing? You two seemed perfectly inclined to share me, what’s a kiss between friends?”
“Please. Sorry - just let us go.” The smaller of the two pleaded.
“Once you kiss - perhaps I’ll consider. Best do it soon though, I’d hate for the little situations beneath your underwear to be revealed to the patrons of this lovely establishment when my friends come looking for me.”
The males glanced once more at eachother, leaning closely in, still hesitating but resigning themselves to their fate.
When their lips were mere centimeters apart, she held up a hand. “Ah- just a moment, boys. We have company.”
Eris started at the comment. Looking down he found a shadow winding around his ankle - was he imagining things or was it almost playful?
“High Lord.” She mused. “How do you dispose of the trash in your court?”
Mask in place, he casually stepped out of the shadows with his hands in his pockets and a devilish grin on his face.
Her gaze fixed on him. Her beauty even more striking up close, and her scent - utterly mouth watering. And when his eyes met hers
Snap.
He knew then and there that he was wholehearted and irrevocably hers for the rest of his days.
He’d wait another 500 for it to snap for her too if he had to.
She was his mate. His.

Friday, March 5th; 11:15 PM - On the plane.
"Sweetheart," Lucy whispers to me. "We're about to land."
I groan, sinking into what seems to be her neck, judging by the familiar scent reaching my nose. I’m so comfortable. I don’t want to open my eyes, but I feel like I have to when she alternates between caressing and shaking my thigh. A grumble escapes me, making my girlfriend laugh.
"Come on, sleepyhead. Don't make me take drastic measures."
I can’t help but smile. I missed that nickname.
"I’d like to see you try."
My voice is rough, betraying my six hours of sleep. Lucy runs her hand through my hair, making me hum with satisfaction. Reuniting with her after a week of classes feels so good. I’ve worked so hard that I’m completely drained. I pull back to stretch, and Lucy waits until I’m done to kiss me. I glance to the other side, where Ingrid is still lost in her own world with her headphones on. Either she woke up before me, or she hasn’t moved since takeoff.
"Am I the only one who slept?" I ask.
"Mmhmm," she teases.
I sigh and cuddle back against Lucy. We still have a few minutes left. She kisses the top of my head, making me shiver.
"It feels like ages since I’ve been home."
"A month," Lucy comments.
"It feels longer."
It really does. Ingrid and Mapi had started dating at my place. A little month, and yet so much happiness has been shared since then. I hope it lasts. The plane lands smoothly, and the passengers disembark with a bit of jostling. Shay wasn’t here this time, but I hope to see her on the way back. I liked her. We make our way to the terminal. Hector is picking us up, but I’m not surprised to see Mapi by his side. She rushes into her beloved’s arms, who welcomes her warmly. We take the opportunity to greet my driver, who seems happy to see us again. After picking up our luggage, we head out. I sit up front to give Mapi and Ingrid time to catch up. As for me, I’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the arms of my girlfriend, which I missed so much last night. I sleep much better with her, but I’m not complaining. We have weekends, and not everyone is that lucky.
The ride is short. Mapi's conversations make time fly. Everyone seems full of energy except me, even though I slept. I’m lucky my suitcase is the lightest. I didn’t bring much, following Lucy’s advice. That way, I’ll be able to bring some stuff back to Manchester. Our move is progressing, and it makes me happy. When we arrive at the house, I expect Lucy to greet me, but to my surprise, my mom welcomes us instead.
"Good evening, girls. I hope you had a good trip."
"Hey, Mom. Yeah, it wasn’t too bad."
"Speak for yourself. You slept the whole way," Ingrid mocks, making Mapi laugh.
I glare at her, but Lucy quickly pulls me into her arms to ease my tension.
"Okay, that’s enough."
"Can we go upstairs?" I suggest with a tired sigh.
I’m not in the mood to face everything right now, even though I came to settle many things. Lucy smiles and kisses my forehead.
"Yes, I think we’re all exhausted."
"We’ll chat tomorrow morning over breakfast," my mom agrees.
"You’ll be there?" I ask, surprised.
"I’m on duty for a few hours in the late afternoon tomorrow, but otherwise, I’m free for the weekend. I had some hours to take, so I arranged it because I knew you’d be coming."
"Oh... okay. Do you know if Joan is in my room?"
"I don’t think so. I put him to bed in his own room, and I haven’t heard a peep since. Who knows, maybe he’s changed rooms."
I nod and thank her for the info, though it doesn’t help much. We exchange goodnights before heading upstairs. The girls take their usual room, and Lucy and I go to mine. I don’t turn on the light until I’m sure my brother isn’t there. Surprisingly, he’s really not, but I’m not going to complain. It means I can enjoy Lucy’s company as much as I want.
"I’m going to change," Lucy announces after rummaging through her suitcase.
"Yep. Hurry up."
She winks at me before slipping behind the bathroom door. She acts like she’s at home, and I love it. I quickly change in the dressing room, wearing one of my dad’s old T-shirts. I don’t bother with shorts since the shirt falls almost mid-thigh. Lucy’s seen me in less, and I feel comfortable with her now. It’s not like she’d take advantage of the situation. I’m done by the time she reopens the door. I join her to brush my teeth, admiring her curves highlighted by a tank top and shorts while she finishes the task herself.
"I’m almost done," she says with a mouthful.
"Take your time," I reply with a smile.
She rinses and wipes her mouth, finally giving me space. I quickly brush my teeth and rush to join her in bed, where she’s already lying down. I make sure to turn off all the lights before lying beside her. A satisfied sigh escapes me. I particularly love my bed, especially when I’m sharing it with Lucy.
"For a change, could you hold me tonight?" she asks unexpectedly.
Her request catches me off guard, but I immediately turn toward her and wrap my arms around her.
"You don’t need to ask," I murmur. "Come here."
A few seconds later, I can feel her against me, her breath brushing my chest. My T-shirt had ridden up, but I didn’t mind. Lucy took the opportunity to slip her arms underneath. I wasn’t wearing a bra, but she didn’t push the intimacy.
"I missed you," she whispers.
"I missed you too," I admit. "So much."
I kiss her face repeatedly. She hums little sounds of amusement.
"Good night, my love," I finish, kissing her lips.
"Good night," she mumbles in return. "I love you."
Smiling, I fall asleep without any trouble.
Saturday, March 6th; 9:30 AM - At Ona’s house.
The atmosphere in the house felt strange this morning. When Lucy and I came downstairs, I was surprised to find Marcus in the living room, reading the newspaper, waiting for breakfast. That wasn’t all. Samuel wasn’t in the kitchen today. It was my mom making pancakes, burning her fingers in the process, with Joan. Something had definitely changed.
"Morning," I mumbled.
"Ona!"
"Oh, hey girls. Did you sleep well?"
I hugged my brother as Lucy answered my mom, saying everything was fine.
"Where’s Samuel?" I asked.
"I gave him the weekend off. Marcus and I are here, so we didn’t want to bother him."
"Oh..."
I struggled to hide my disappointment. I would have loved to see him again, just like I miss Lucy so much.
"Can we help with anything?" Lucy offered, noticing my reaction.
"The table isn’t set yet, but don’t worry about it. I’ll do it when I’m done here."
"No, we’ll do it," Lucy insisted. "Will you help me, sweetheart? I don’t know where the silverware is."
9
I obey without showing my joy. First, I set Joan down after kissing his cheek. Then, I help Lucy find everything and bring it to the dining room.
"She's trying to be nice, so please, don't lose your temper," my girlfriend scolds me when we're alone.
"Something's off. This house has never been this calm and full before," I say, placing the silverware after Lucy set the plates down.
She stops and cups my face, making it impossible for me to look away.
"Stop overthinking."
"You don't know them," I say, raising my voice in a whisper, forcing her to let go. "They’ve never spent a weekend together at home."
"Maybe they talked things out. Didn’t you say things weren’t going well with Joan?"
"Hmm," I respond uncertainly. "Usually, when things seem this way, something bad is about to happen."
She sighs, offering a small smile.
"Nothing will happen today if you just relax. I'm here, okay? And I always will be. Just stop expecting the worst in this house."
I sigh and nod, struggling to believe her, but I’ll trust her for now. Mapi and Ingrid interrupt us at that moment, and then my mother enters with a huge plate of pancakes. The girls look happy and it’s nice to see. We sit down for breakfast. I’m having a hard time enjoying myself, especially since Joan has placed himself between Lucy and me. I notice he seems more cheerful than last week when he stayed with us. Maybe Lucy is right. Conversations start flowing at the table. I don't feel like joining in, too lost in my thoughts, and Lucy notices. When she finishes eating, she lets her hand linger near my neck, a silent reminder of her support, all while sipping her coffee and engaging in the discussion.
"What do you all have planned today?" my mother asks.
"We’re not sure yet. Nothing special," Lucy replies.
"But I can tell you we won't be here tonight," I say calmly.
"Yeah, it’s going to be a party!" Mapi adds.
"Really? You’re going out? Where to?" my mother asks excitedly.
"Ah, that’s a surprise. It’s our couples' anniversary, so we’re celebrating!" Mapi grins.
"Already? Time flies."
I sigh softly. If Lucy weren’t touching me, I would've gotten up long ago to clear my plate. My mother, sitting next to me at the head of the table, smiles at me timidly, but I don't return it. I feel uncomfortable in this picture-perfect family atmosphere.
"I’d like to take a walk along the beach," I say to Lucy. "It’s been a long time since I’ve been."
"We can go, if you want. The weather looks nice outside, and I haven’t been yet," she replies.
"It’s already warmer than Manchester," I remark.
"You’ll have to get used to it," she teases.
I smile, nodding. It’s the right time to share the news. We haven’t told anyone yet, and while it might seem obvious, it’s good to confirm it.
"I’ve decided to move in with Lucy," I announce bluntly.
"Really?" Ingrid exclaims. "Since when?"
"You two are so secretive, it’s unbelievable," Mapi adds, looking more surprised than anything.
My smile widens despite myself. She really knows how to lighten the mood. I glance at Lucy, who keeps supporting me from where she sits.
"We decided last week."
"Well, the house will stay quiet, then," Marcus comments.
"It’s sudden," my mother adds.
"It was a bit of an impulsive decision," Lucy admits.
"We had a bit of a spat over the gallery’s response," I explain.
"Oh, did you finally get an answer?" my mother asks, surprised. "What did they say?"
"They want to send me to Cardiff. I’m applying elsewhere. We prepared my applications this week, and they were sent yesterday, just before we left."
"But it’s a good opportunity," Marcus remarks.
"I know, but I don’t want to be far from Lucy. I have a meeting with Mr. Fields next Monday. We’ll see how it goes," I shrug. "Either way, my decision is made."
"Let’s wait for the meeting first," my girlfriend interjects. "The decision isn't final yet."
I feel like she still hopes I’ll accept the offer… Or maybe she just wants to reassure my mother and Marcus? Either way, if it’s the first, she’ll have to accept it won’t happen because, for me, it’s already clear.
"Well…" my mother says, getting up from the table.
"You’ll stay for lunch, right? I’m making lasagna."
The girls look at me with starry eyes. I roll mine and end up agreeing to please them. Lasagna, of all things—one of my favorite dishes. At least we’d enjoy the morning here. Everyone pitches in to clear the table first. I'm not sure how it happened, but at one point, I found myself alone with my mother in the kitchen, loading the dishwasher.
"So…" she starts. "Everything’s good with Lucy?"
"Uh, yeah. I think my decision to move in with her says a lot."
"True…"
"And how’s Joan? Is he behaving better?"
I had checked in with her last week to make sure Mapi and Joan had arrived safely. I’d briefly mentioned my concerns, but since it was late in Barcelona, we hadn’t had time to delve deeper into the conversation.
"A little. We’re slowly getting him back on track. Marcus and I have adjusted our schedules so one of us is always around to be with him."
I nod. Lucy was right. That’s already a good step. I didn’t have that privilege. Lucy was the one who took care of me when I got home from school.
"During the day, he’s fine. The main issue is after school. But we can’t always be available; we both have demanding jobs."
"At least he’s seeing you more. What about Sofia and Sam? You’re not planning to let them go, are you?"
"Oh no! They do so much for us that the thought never crossed our minds. Now that we’re around more, we try to give them more time off when it suits them. I think Samuel even went away for the weekend with his boyfriend."
"Okay," I murmur. "That’s good, then."
I turn around when I hear footsteps and feel relieved to see Lucy. Her timing couldn’t have been better. She brings in the last of the dishes. We exchange a smile.
"Need any help here?"
"Oh no, we’re almost done."
"The girls are settled on the couch. Apparently, Joan picked Mulan… The animated one, of course."
I chuckle softly, just imagining Mapi watching a Disney movie. I stop when I realize Lucy is serious.
"Really?"
"Yep. And he’s asking for you, but I bet you guessed that."
I groan, causing my mother to laugh. I hadn’t imagined our morning ending like this, but well, we’re family after all.
"Go ahead. I’ll finish up."
"Thanks."
I put away the last plate before heading off with my girlfriend. She wraps her arm around my shoulders, pulling me close.
"Everything okay?" she asks, kissing my temple.
"Let’s say it is…" I exhale.
"Did she tell you what she wanted to?"
I frown, realizing I’d completely forgotten about that in the middle of everything. She had insisted on sharing some big news.
"No. I forgot all about it. We talked about Joan instead."
"You’ll tell me later," she says as we enter the living room.
The couch has been pulled out into a bed. Our friends are already lying on one side, with my brother in the middle. His face lights up when he sees us.
"Can we start?"
"Yeah, just give us a second," I laugh. "Let us settle in."
I sit next to her and snuggle up to Lucy when she joins me. Maybe this moment won’t be as bad as I thought. My brother starts the movie, but honestly, I don’t pay much attention. I’m too focused on the soothing touch of my girlfriend. It’s so comforting and relaxing.
Saturday, March 6th, 6:30 PM – At Ona’s Place
I’m nervous. I look at myself in the mirror one more time. I think I look beautiful, wearing a dress and heels. I hope Lucy finds me beautiful too. I’m not used to seeing myself like this, even less with Mapi, who’s sitting on my bed looking just as stylish.
"Everything will be fine, you know," she teases. "It’s not like this is your first date."
"I know," I murmur. "Do you have the tickets I asked for?"
"Oh yeah, they’re downstairs," she says, standing up.
"Downstairs? What are they doing down there?"
"Well, did you think I’d risk Ingrid finding them? The last thing I needed was her thinking they were for her, and then I’d have to explain everything."
"Hum..."
I take a deep breath. I’m a little scared. I planned to go to the Barcelona theatre for a show. I had fallen in love with it and wanted Lucy to experience our theatre. This was the perfect opportunity. But of course, dinner had to come first. I chose a casual restaurant. I wanted to impress, but not too much. I wanted it to feel like us. We didn’t need anything grandiose—just a moment to share, like we always love.
"Alright, can we go down? I’m sure the girls are already waiting for us."
"Yeah, I think so."
She laughs, patting my back.
"Come on, stop. You’ve already won her heart. Tonight’s just a romantic evening."
She winks at me, and I smile. She’s right. We just need to enjoy ourselves. That’s the theme of this weekend. The afternoon was already amazing by the beach. I loved seeing it again. I missed the scenery, but I can’t complain about where I am now.
"Let’s go. We don’t want to keep them waiting."
The girls got ready in the guest room that Mapi and Ingrid were staying in. Lucy just grabbed her bag and locked herself in there. Now, I’m eager to see her again. We head downstairs quietly. My anxiety returns as we descend the stairs. I hope we’re the first ones down, but of course, we’re not. Ingrid and Lucy are already there, chatting and even laughing with my mom. She looks stunning, just as I expected. She’s wearing a navy blue dress with an open back. The front is held by a strap around her neck. I stand there for a moment, just admiring her. She’s the first to move, walking toward me in her white heels. She takes my hand to help me down the last few steps and plants a kiss on it.
"You look stunning, my love," she murmurs, pulling me into her arms, making me melt completely.
"You’re not too bad yourself."
She laughs softly. I’m tempted to kiss her, but I remember we’re not alone. Mapi has joined Ingrid, and my mom is watching from the side.
"Shall we go?"
"Yes... Did you manage to get the car keys?"
"Of course. Your mom seems to trust me more than she trusts you."
"That’s undeniable," I say, rolling my eyes, making my girlfriend laugh.
"Have a great evening, girls," my mom says as we head outside.
"Thank you."
Outside, I’m surprised to see not one, but two cars. It makes things easier, but I wasn’t expecting it. There’s Hector’s car and my mom’s.
"Well, I guess this is where we part ways," Ingrid says.
It’s at that moment that I take a good look at her. It’s the first time I’ve seen her looking so different. She’s dressed up for a night out as well.
"Yeah," my girlfriend responds. "Have a great evening on your side. See you later, maybe."
As she speaks, she opens the door to my mom’s Jeep. I get in, feeling a bit uneasy. I don’t have great memories in this car, the few times I’ve been in it. It’s what she used to take me to my detox sessions at the hospital, at least when she could. Lucy takes the driver’s seat, and we’re the first to leave. I’m floating on a little cloud, with her hand resting on my thigh. She hums along to the song on the radio, and after a while, I realize she’s driving without me giving her any directions. Then, I remember—I forgot to get the tickets!
"You know!" I exclaim.
She laughs heartily, squeezing my knee in her palm.
"Sorry, baby. I hope you won’t be mad, but I made a small change to your plans."
"W-what? What do you mean?"
She smiles, glancing at me briefly before turning her eyes back to the road, knowing I prefer that.
"Mapi told Ingrid she was panicking because she lost the tickets for what you had planned, and she didn’t dare tell you."
I widen my eyes. Sure, the theatre was important to me, but I wouldn’t have been mad at Mapi for something out of her control.
"Of course, I found out and contacted Mapi. I offered to take over the planning and make it a last-minute surprise for you. So here we are. I hope you won’t be upset that I made that decision."
I exhale softly. I don’t know if I want to be mad at them or not. I was really looking forward to organizing this evening for once, but at the same time, it’s so sweet. I can’t be mad at her for this. She always wants to make me happy.
"I know you wanted to plan this evening yourself... but I just love surprising you. I can’t help it."
What did I just say? I laugh as she brings my hand to her lips. This woman will drive me crazy. I definitely can’t be mad at her.
"You’re not mad, are you?"
"No... So, what have you planned instead?"
"You’ll find out soon enough. Don’t expect anything wild. It’s just us tonight."
We had the same idea—it’s amazing. I smile, feeling at peace.
"I’m already excited then."
We reach the city center, and I recognize the street we’re on. I think I know where we’re going, but I wait until we’re closer to be sure. She must’ve gotten the idea from Mapi. There’s no other way—she doesn’t know anything about my old life, let alone my habits. She parks the car, and with a squeeze on my thigh, I understand I should stay in my seat. She walks around to open my door and offers me her arm.
"Really?" I tease playfully.
"Only the best for my lady," she replies with a mischievous grin as we start walking.
"But tonight was supposed to be my chance to be the gentlewoman. You missed the boat, what a shame."
She laughs and kisses my cheek.
"This night doesn’t belong to anyone in particular. What I mean is, it’s our night—just the two of us."
"You’re right."
I hold onto her arm and rest my head on her shoulder, smiling as I see the Arkadia sign glowing red in the distance. It’s been a while since I’ve been here.
"You know where we’re going, don’t you?"
I laugh a little, taking my eyes off the sign. She must’ve noticed my gaze. I have a lot of memories here, with Mapi and my high school friends. We used to hang out here a lot when Miller didn’t throw a party. I’m eager to see if the place has changed.
"It was obvious the second you drove by here," I admit.
"I’m becoming predictable—that’s not good."
I giggle again, leaning into her a little more.
"Don’t be silly, baby. It was unexpected, really. I was expecting the theatre, so you know."
"The theatre? That was your plan?"
"Mmhmm," I confirm. "With a nice little dinner before, but yeah."
"I didn’t know you liked that."
"It depends on the show. When my dad came back from missions, he’d take me there every time. I loved going because it was our moment, you know?"
"I see," she smiles. "One day, I’ll take you to the one in Porto."
"Are you crazy? The shows there cost an arm and a leg, and they’re not even the best. But I’d love to visit it. »
- Very well, Princess. We'll visit it when we go to Porto then.
I smile as she opens the door for me to enter the restaurant/bar. The décor hasn’t changed one bit over the years. It’s a totally modern style with a central bar and all the tables surrounding it.
- Oh, I can’t believe it... Ona Batlle! It’s been a while!
- Sterling? I’m surprised. Hey.
I awkwardly accept his embrace, which catches me off guard. He’s an old high school friend. We were never particularly close. He was an athlete, and we were always in the same class. We know each other that way, but also from a few parties we attended together thanks to mutual friends.
- How are you? What have you been up to? he asks, stepping back.
- I’m doing pretty well, I say as I feel a hand slide across my back.
I glance at Lucy and give her a soft smile.
- Let me introduce you. Sterling, an old high school classmate. Sterling, this is my girlfriend, Lucy.
- Well, you must be doing really well, he laughs. Hi.
He extends his hand to Lucy. She takes it for a polite handshake but doesn’t say anything.
- Do you still hear from Mapi? he asks. She still comes by here from time to time, unlike you.
- Oh, yes, yes. We see each other regularly when I’m here. I live in Manchester now. And you, what are you doing here? Do you work here?
- Yeah, on weekends. I’m still in college, so I need a bit of cash.
Lucy clears her throat, catching Sterling’s attention. I hold back a smile. She just can’t help herself.
- I’ve reserved a table for two under the name Woods, she announces.
- Oh yeah, sure. Sorry, I didn’t mean to keep you. It’s just been a while since we last saw each other. Come on, I’ll show you to your table.
- Could we get one of the round tables in the back? I ask. That’s my favorite spot.
- Yeah, I think that can be arranged.
He takes us exactly where I wanted. I love these spots because the seating wraps around the table in an arc, and there are walls that go all the way up to the ceiling, shielding us from the other tables. The other side has chairs, but what I love most is how cozy it feels, making the space less noisy.
- Here you go, ladies. I’ll leave you with the menus and be back to check on you.
- Thank you.
I slide onto the bench first, quickly followed by my girlfriend. This way, we sit side by side.
- I can see why you like these seats, Lucy murmurs.
- It’s perfect for tonight, don’t you think?
- Exactly, she says, picking up the menu. We can eat and have a drink here, right?
- We don’t have to stay here the whole night.
- No. This is great for tonight. I even saw a pool table over there...
- Yeah, there’s a pool table here, I giggle. Maybe it’s time for you to give me a private lesson, you being the expert. Maybe I can finally beat your friends.
She laughs and nods.
- That would be an idea, because you’re a walking disaster at pool.
- Hey, that’s not my fault, I pout.
- I never said it was, she teases. So, what do you recommend from the menu?
- Everything, I laugh. No, for real, we could order something to share. Like this dish, look. My friends and I used to get this because it was cheap, and we could split the bill.
- Don’t worry about the price. I’m paying tonight.
- No, I always pay! You could let me pay for once!
- No way, she smiles. Since I planned tonight, I’m going all the way.
- You have a secret stash of money or something?
She laughs heartily at my little joke. I actually wonder how much she earns because she never seems to have any complaints, considering what she owns.
- Nonsense. I’m just well-paid, that’s all. And since I’m still in school, I don’t have daily expenses, so I save a lot. Plus, I got paid for the nights and weekends I worked... thanks to you, by the way, she laughs. So, yeah.
- Well, when you put it like that... Do you pay for your meals?
- No, it’s included in my contract, along with my living expenses for staying in the dorm.
- That’s amazing!
- Not really. It’s a private school. It’s either you or your parents, in your case, who pay for the teachers. Plus, there are partnerships, like with the government. There aren’t many schools like Camp Wiegman.
- Did you know the Putellas and Leah and Alessia families ended up there because of a judge? I ask her.
- Yes, I knew thanks to Ingrid.
- Does everyone confide in you?
- Yes. We don’t let students leave until they’ve talked at least once about why they’re there. We want it to have a freeing effect on them, you know? Not everyone has someone to listen to them.
- That was the case for me, I murmur. But you had to push hard before I opened up.
- That’s true, she laughs. You weren’t easy, but I understand why. It depends on the case... Like Alexia, for example. Within two weeks, we knew why she and her sister were there. Ingrid practically let her go right away. She was a good student and didn’t have any internal struggles.
- That doesn’t surprise me. She’s always been happy and studious.
- She was relieved to be there, you could tell.
- Well, the school brought them stability, and she no longer had to worry about her sister taking care of everything on her own.
- That’s true.
A brief silence falls between us. I close the menu after glancing through it quickly. It hasn’t changed, so I already know what I’m going to order.
- Have you decided?
- Yeah. I’m getting what I always get.
- And what’s that?
- A Margarita cocktail. It’s excellent here.
- Well then, I’ll follow your lead.
The evening goes perfectly. We order quickly, and we talk, laugh, and eat... all while staying close to each other. I wouldn’t trade this night for anything in the world. This was our first night out alone, and I regret that we don’t do it more often. I get to hear numerous anecdotes she shares over drinks and our shared plate.
- I’ve always wanted to travel, she tells me.
- Really?
- Yeah. I think the world hides so many secrets. I’ve never had the chance to go to America, for example.
- I’ve been there once, I confess. When I was little, but honestly, I don’t remember much.
- What country did you visit?
- Cuba, I think, one summer. My mom loves warm places. That’s why she chose Barcelona.
- Cuba, she murmurs. It must be a beautiful country.
- I’d love to visit Argentina one day. I hear everything there is gorgeous.
- That’s true, she agrees, nodding. Egypt too. It must be amazing to see a pyramid. Or New Zealand.
- Oh, and Japan too! I add.
- Japan? she raises an eyebrow. I’m not sure you’d like the weather there, she laughs. You’re always complaining about Manchester, and it probably rains even more there.
- Yeah, well, I’d get used to it. It’s not like a week would kill me.
- Noted, she smiles, popping one of the last fries from the plate into her mouth.
- Oh no, I see what you’re up to! You need to stop getting ahead of my surprise ideas.
- I don’t know what you’re talking about, she replies with a mischievous grin.
- Yeah, right! You’re always one step ahead of me!
- You’re exaggerating.
- No, I giggle. Look at tonight. I had everything planned, and you just flipped it all.
- I didn’t flip anything, she laughs. Maybe you had something special planned that I didn’t know about? she teases me.
I blush, remembering what I had intended to do tonight. Maybe now is the time to make my announcement. Lucy notices my state and smiles gently.
- Oh, so you did have something planned? she teases again.
- Stop it, I giggle, lightly pushing her away. Or I’ll cancel what I was going to do.
Oh, threats now?
She laughs but steps back to give me space. I clear my throat and turn slightly on the bench to face her, trying to show her that this is serious. She doesn't take it that way at all. She looks like she's teasing me, with her head resting on her hand and a small smile on her lips. I can't speak anymore. The apprehension of opening up to her leaves me speechless. But she gives me time. So I watch her, especially her beautiful eyes. From the first day, they had haunted me. I could always relive that moment as if it were yesterday. I was frozen, trapped in that disorienting vision. It was silent, for the first time that evening. I take advantage of it to gently touch her beautiful face, tracing its contours. Lucy says nothing. She lets me rediscover her with her eyes closed. I touch everywhere: her eyebrows, her chin, her nose, her lips... I linger on the latter before kissing her as tenderly as possible. We rediscover each other softly before separating again. There's no trace of amusement on her face anymore. She understands that this is serious. So, I begin.
"I love you," I murmur. "I love you so much... You're the person I've always wanted in my life. You really don’t understand what you mean to me. You make me better... you make me happy. If we ever talk about breaking up, it would never come from me. Because I love you so much. Like I've never loved anyone before. Y-you must be my soulmate. I can’t see it any other way..."
The words are strong, but I had to let them out. I’d been holding it in for too long. My eyes fill with tears. Lucy is in the same state as me. It's the first time I've seen her eyes this watery. She says nothing, though, and panic starts to rise in me. Maybe I went too far, talking about soulmates? But that’s what I feel, and she deserves to know. She, who has waited for me all this time. She, who has accepted me with my character, my flaws, and my mood swings. To be honest, I don't even like myself sometimes.
"Lucy, I-"
"Shhh."
Her fingers brush my lips, encouraging me to stay silent. She replaces them with her lips, starting another kiss. Soft at first, then rougher towards the end. We can't hold back anymore. Our emotions speak for us. We kiss, again and again, barely pausing for breath, closing the gap between us as much as possible. The only regret I have is being in a public place. I have this overwhelming urge to tear off her clothes, to discover this body that belongs to me.
"I-I want you," I whisper against her lips in a moment of euphoria.
My comment breaks the powerful connection between us. We’re both out of breath. She smiles at me before resting her forehead against mine. This moment allows us to come down from our high, eyes closed. I blush, realizing what I just said. When I open my eyes, Lucy is already looking at me. Her eyes are dilated, dark with desire. I’m speechless at the sight. She gently runs her fingers across my face.
"I love you, and I’ll make love to you one day... But definitely not on a whim and certainly not under your mother’s roof."
I burst out laughing despite myself. Tears fall from my eyes at the same time. It's adorable that she can still think of my mom in this situation. She smiles and eventually laughs too when she sees that I can't calm down. This unique moment is so us. It’s reserved, full of love, and sprinkled with joy. My laughter slowly fades. We return to the moment where we're gazing into each other's eyes. I feel silly for being so scared. With Lucy, everything was so simple. She made things feel so easy.
"I love you," I whisper again.
« and I love you," she says with a soft smile.
She knew this was a big step for me. She never even questioned my reasons. That’s admirable of her. I plan to explain it all to her one day.
"I feel like I'm starting a new life with you. It’s like I'm reliving my first times all over again. Maybe not for everything, but for most of it. I know it’s strange, but... I don’t even know how to express it."
"There’s nothing strange about that. You’ve erased your past from your mind, and now you’re starting your life over, so it feels like you’re experiencing everything for the first time again."
I nod. She completely understood what I was trying to say. She takes my hands in hers.
"I would've loved to be your first. I completely understand why you’re anxious, but you don't need to be. You won’t mess up this new chance. I fully intend to be the last person you’ll ever know that intimately."
I throw myself awkwardly into her arms, burying my head in her neck. I’ve never needed to explain much for Lucy to understand me. That’s one of the reasons I love her so much. She kisses the top of my head, holding me as tightly as she can, whispering sweet words to reassure me. Meanwhile, I keep repeating that I love her in what feels like uncontrollable sobs, overwhelmed by all the emotions coursing through me.

Serene. Quiet. In the warm grasp of your peaceful slumber. Your toasty blanket completely engulfed you whole. Your face poking out just enough to let air flow into your nose for proper breathing. Your room was cozy, well, your side of the room. A desk cluttered with trinkets and paperwork. Scribbled notes on top of books. Your soft bed adjacent to said desk. Some fairy lights strung about as to not let it ever be a full dark night. Plush animals strewn about to occupy the remaining space of your bed and floor beneath it. Ah yes, one could get used to such luxury.
The other side belonged to your little brother. A handful he was, one you kept close to your heart. His own plush animals are thrown around to mingle with his light boards and remote control cars. A small desk with crayons and construction paper. Some snippets of color here and there. A small pile of markers missing their caps. No matter, you’d find them another time. His bed laid empty, his liveliness unbeknownst to you. For now.
You awoke to a plush object falling onto your face. Your little brother’s laugh rang through the room. Feeling his weight shift onto the bed as he giggled and nudged you awake. Smiling to yourself, you sat up and let the object fall onto your lap. A yellow teddy bear with a blue gingham ribbon. How cute.
With a yawn and a stretch you greeted your sibling by ruffling his hair. “Morning, pudge.” He shook his head away and lightly smacked your hand. “Hey!”
You couldn’t help the chuckle that left your throat. “Heyyy!” Mocking him with a smirk, you ruffle his hair once more. A harsh nudge of his head sent your hand flying off. Before you could react, he sent himself shooting right into your abdomen. “Oof-!” You breathed out. Minor pain aside, he curled himself up into your lap and started babbling about a dream he had.
You glanced out your window as your hand tucked his hair behind his ear. The sun hasn’t come out yet. Blue hour. Smiling, you closed your eyes with a hum. Right on time.
This was routine for you and your little brother, Gregory. He’d wake up at around four in the morning and immediately run up to your bed. Toss his plush as high up into the air as possible and let it fall onto your unsuspecting self. Of course, Gregory only wakes you up for the important things, consisting of: a glass of water, a sweet bread, some cereal, or just to talk your ear off about the wildest dream he had. This time, he chose the latter.
Normally, you’d wait for him to talk to himself to sleep, but you were particularly tired this morning. So you scooped up your little brother, interrupting his dream talk session.
He expressed his dismay by tugging on your shirt and raising his voice. You got off the bed briefly to remove some of your plush animals. Once satisfied with the space you made, you cradled him back to bed with you. Giving him most of your pillow as he made himself comfortable. Humming a short tune as you bundled up the blankets around the two of you.
“Alright, tell me what else happened in your dream,” you said, smiling and pinching his nose. He laughed and scrunched his eyes closed.
⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄
The bright sun is what woke you up first. You sat up with a groan. Not quite the morning person you used to be, you sat up with eyebrows already knitted together, squinting at your window with repugnance. Begrudgingly, you made your way to shut the pesky light out with curtains. Only to get cut off by a sudden crash downstairs.
Oh come now, what time is it even? You thought to yourself. The clock read 6:32 a.m. That checks out. Gregory, still being the morning person, was usually making himself some sort of breakfast by this time. Grabbing a sweater, you made your way down the stairs. Dreading what sort of mess you’d find on your arrival.
“Don’t come down!! I dropped a glass bowl!!” he warned you. You paused and looked down at your fuzzy socks. You left your slippers upstairs. Admittedly a bad habit, but one that Gregory took into account.
“Did you get cut? Do I need to get the bandages?” you hollered back to him as you made your way back to get your slippers.
A few seconds of silence passed by. Taking that as a yes, you made swift work of retrieving the  bandages from the mirror cabinet in the upstairs bathroom, along with some antiseptic if needed. You smiled to yourself. Remembering how clumsy Gregory had been in his younger years. Often running to you in tears after scraping his knees, or getting stung by a bee he'd been chasing. It was rare to see him without a bandage somewhere. Your thumb traced over the bandaid box gently. You yourself were rather clumsy. Often bumping your nose into something or getting cut by the most random things. Just like Gregory, you'd be seen with some sort of bandage. Or even a bruise here and there.
Laughing to yourself, you made your way to the kitchen. Gregory had already swept up the glass debris. He dumped it into an old kitchen rag before tying it with a rubber band. All while wearing oven mitts. Something you'd taught him to avoid any further injury. Whether it be you or anyone else who comes across it.
"C'mere, lemme see," you offered with a hand. Embarrassed, he made taking off the oven mitts as slow as humanly possible. Mumbling something about it not being that bad. "Gregory." Warning him as if you'd already begun to count to three. He groaned out a "hmph" and let his wrist fall onto your hand.
The cut itself was wide. About a quarter size to be exact. It looked like he peeled a sliver of skin off, enough so to have little specks of blood forming. Not a deep cut, thank goodness, but a cut nonetheless. You hummed and dabbed some of the antiseptic on. Your little brother grimacing a bit at the sting.
"How did you get this from dropping a bowl?" you questioned as you slipped on a bandaid. Keeping your hold so he wouldn't find a way to weasel out.
Gregory huffed, "I didn't. I got it from cutting strawberries. I didn't wanna use the cutting board, so I cut them in my hand. But the knife slipped and...yeah…” he trailed off.
You hummed, seeming satisfied with his answer. Hand hovering just an inch above his bandaged wound. You smacked it. "Ow!! What??" he fumed.
"You couldn't be bothered to wash a cutting board? Now look. You have a quarter sized piece of skin missing," you gestured towards his wrist.
"So?" he cradled his wrist towards his chest.
"So?" you parroted back, "You know how easy these can get infected if you don't take care of it properly? Knowing your ass, I'm gonna have to remind you to regularly keep it clean."
Gregory's voice grew quiet. "Nooo."
You chuckled. "Yeaaah," you said, mocking his tone. Your brother laughed as he shoved your shoulder.
"Go back to bed, don't you have that interview at two?" he commented as he made his way back to his fruit.
"I do. Did you wanna come with?"
He thought for a moment, "Hmm..I guess so. Knowing your ass, you'd probably forget where you park." A knowing smile danced across his face.
It was your turn to laugh, "I mean I do—but it's also just a fun place, I think. I figured you can look around and play games while you wait for me."
Gregory feigned his deep thought, "Hmm…wellllll.”
You chuckled and pinched his nose, "It's either yes or I leave you here alone for three hours. I don't want an 'I guess.'" Your brother shook his face away in laughter.
"Okay, okay! I'll tag along!"
You smiled at his answer, "Alright, be ready by 1:30." You ruffled his hair before heading to the stairs. The faint sound of chopping on a cutting board could be heard once you reached your bedroom door. Your shoulders relaxed. "Good egg,” you whispered to yourself.
⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄
The drive there wasn't too bad. Early afternoon on a weekday. People were either working or in class. Either way, it allowed you to arrive ten minutes early. You turned your car off and rummaged around in your bag before exiting your car. You looked at the massive building before you. A silent gasp fell from your mouth as you opened Gregory's door.
"I didn't expect the pizzaplex to be that big…" you mumbled as your little brother laughed.
"Didn't you read up on the job offer before applying?" he poked at your side.
You jumped and swatted his hand away. "I did!” You exclaimed as you shut the car door. “…The important parts at least..." Your answer only gives more fuel to Gregory's laughter.
True, you had read up on the offer itself, the expectations and what not. Just not the rest of what the place had to offer as entertainment. You were there for a retail position. Specifically, a spot in the Lucky Star's Gift Shop. Expectations were: know how to manage a register, minor custodial experience, customer service, and general knowledge of the products you'd be selling. Those products being: plush toys, candies, apparel, trinkets, etc. An easy job surely.
You didn't expect the pizzaplex to be the size of a super mall and then some. Your wide eyes glued to the building as Gregory dragged you to the front doors. The parking lot was thankfully not as full. You felt comfortable in trusting your sibling to guide you to your destination.
A small chime rang once the two of you arrived. The smell of pizza and freshly cleaned carpeting wafted in the air. The ceilings were higher than the sky. Tiled floors waxed clean and carpeted floors as vibrant as the day they'd been installed. Gregory let go of your hand as he took a step ahead. Eager eyes darting around all the possible things he could do: an exciting collection of bowling, racing, arcades, and a food court, to name a few. He felt his stomach growl. His window shopping, however, got interrupted by a robot. A cute little thing. Just an inch taller than Gregory. Colored cheeks and the animation of a stiff broomstick. A colorful sunny shirt with the words "Daycare!" littered across its chest. A quick scan from your head to toe gave it all the information needed.
"Interview number 24, scheduled in 8 minutes. Early. Punctual. With a—" it stopped and gave a slight nod, "—plus one. I am one of the daycare's staff robots, greetings. Would you like me to show you to the location of the interview? Do you need to enroll the young one into the daycare while he waits?" It offered its metallic hand towards you.
You smiled and shook your head. "Thank you! But he’s alright on his own, I appreciate the offer though!" You made quick work of fishing for your credit card in your wallet. "Alright Greg, I'm leaving you with this to use responsibly. Food and a few games. Keep your phone volume on high and with you at all times. I'll call you once I'm done, alright?"
His eager hands snatched the piece of plastic, "Alright!" And with that, he was gone. Laughter hummed through your chest as you took the staff bot's hand. Just an interview. In and out. Then you'd find Gregory and be on your way home.
The walk there helped you familiarize yourself with the layout of the first floor. You took note of a few bathrooms and emergency exits. The bright neon lights arranged in stripes along the wall caught your eye. How you didn't notice that upon first entering was beyond you. The larger than life statues in the dead center as well. The Glam Rocks, in golden splendor.
You kept making mental notes as you followed the staff bot up the escalators—a gift shop or two on the side, a few designated party rooms—just some things you'd expect to see in the pizzaplex. You almost bumped into the bot as it halted. Pristine walls were decorated with a fun blue sky and the words “Super Star Daycare!” Two painted over doors sat in the middle. The right door had a small screen on it. A small wave of the staff bot’s hand had the screen flashing a green color. The doors click open, granting you both access. You watched in awe at the interaction, smiling to yourself at the notion that kids under Fazbear care were taken very seriously. Enough so to only allow a select few during working hours.
What you didn't expect was to hear the reverb of a band. Wasn't this a daycare? You didn't recall reading about there being two bands within the facility. That or the Glam Rocks hosting shows for the smaller children.  Sensing your confusion, the staff bot chimed, "While this is a daycare, the attendants do like to offer shows to both children and family members. A sort of break from taking care of all the little ones running around. It keeps them still long enough while me and the others get nap time essentials ready—or when organizing the place during a busy day." You nodded at it's explanation. The staff bot took your hand once more and guided you into the hallway.
The glittery ivory flooring wasn't new, but the light fixtures were. Instead of intense neon, this section of the pizzaplex favored a warm light hung by chandelier. There were faint wooden walls staring back at you. It felt elegant to say the least. Catching you off guard, as you wouldn't expect this sort of appeal from a daycare. But a place to hold shows? You could picture it.
The daycare itself was enormous. The front doors loomed over you, as did its walls. Your eyes trailed up to find a sort of railing at an even higher level. You could only assume it was to help clean and maintain the structure. While it was walled off, the daycare offered viewing windows for anyone who dropped off their kid. Or in this case, for you to peer into.
The bot led you a bit aways from the daycare. Noticing a small fault in your steps, it offered you a small stop to look through the side window. Paying attention to your growing curiosity for the daycare attendants. You smiled in thanks and turned your attention to watch.
A bright sunny animatronic held the position as lead guitarist. His rays dancing about with little head shakes along with his background vocals. His counterpart, a sleepy night capped moon animatronic, played what looked like a bass while also taking lead vocals. Easily keeping up with the sun's guitar. Behind them, another animatronic was on drums. He resembled the sun, but had a darker color palette and a dark silhouette in his rays. He had a calmer smile to him. While he didn't sing along, he did keep up with their energy. An eclipse themed animatronic, you deduced.
Next to the moon was another guitar player, a more human looking animatronic. His color palette matched the sun's while taking the personality of the moon. Rays shooting out from his curly hair. To the sun's left was a female animatronic, another human-esque one. A violin in one hand and a wide smile and energy to match the sun's. Though her color palette resembled the moon's more than anything. Even sporting a similar nightcap.
"A Thousand Eyes, I believe that's what they're playing. It's a popular choice here. Bobby Vee?" the bot nodded, "Yes Bobby Vee, a classic." You continued looking on, impressed by their performance.
Your eyes danced across their attire: the sun sporting an exciting patterned button up shirt, bright yellow suns decorating his arms and chest. His pants were high waisted and loosely flared at the legs. Having a clown like ruffle at both ends, with cute sun's at the knees. The moon wore a red vest atop his own button up shirt. A puffed short sleeve with moons leading into a tight long sleeve seamlessly. Sporting similar pants as his counterpart, the main difference being the moons on his knees and a faint change in fabric color at the hips. As well as the buttons, which formed in a triangular pattern at his waist. Their clothing is reminiscent of both a 50s working man's attire and a 50s clown costume.
The eclipse was vastly different in clothing. An eclipse patterned button up yes, but short sleeved. No elongated pants either. Instead, he was clad in high waisted, two toned shorts with two pairs of belts. A pair of knee socks hugged at his legs before leading into his jester shoes. You couldn't help the smile growing on your face. While his counterparts had casual working man's clothing, he wore a relaxed summer outfit.
The human leaning designed animatronics had contrasting aspects. While the male's color palette resembled the sun and eclipse, he had somber imagery: a yellow short sleeved button down riddled with rain clouds and drops. His pants flaring with ruffles. The latter being cleverly white with raindrops defying gravity and drifting up his legs. His female counterpart sporting sad blues to match the moon. Specks of happy suns littered her puffy sleeved button up. Her own vest was colored a happy yellow with four pointed stars. Her high waisted shorts were a two toned blue with similar stars dancing at the ends. A sun patterned nightcap atop her head.
"So remember when you tell your little white lies that the niiiight~ Has a thousand eyyyyes~!", The sun and moon sang while their human counterparts accompanied with a falsetto. The eclipse excitedly hit his symbols to signify the end of the song.
The daycare erupted in cheers and you couldn't help but clap softly. The animatronics bowed as flowers and toys were thrown to the main stage. The sun was the first to rise, his smile widening as he made eye contact with you. You smiled back and raised your hands up a bit. Wanting to make sure he saw you were clapping. Only for said clapping to stop once he winked at you. You couldn't help the silent gasp you let out. The girl animatronic jumped up from her bow, waving to children excitedly. Turning to yank her other half up. Her eyes briefly caught your's, her smile growing that much wider.
“Two minutes remaining until the interview. Shall we be on our way?” The staff bot unknowingly offered you an out to your awkward expression. "Y-Yea! Let's!" you agreed. This time you took its hand in yours as you walked away.
"Ah—I see you were familiar with the way to the Lucky Star's Gift Shop?" you stopped abruptly.
“Uhm...nooo..." sheepishly admitting you were, in fact, not.
The bot laughed, "Don't worry, it's a few steps in front of you."
You glanced up from your stance and saw the sign in front of you. "Oh—! Well look at that…" biting the inside of your cheek as you continued leading the staff bot there.
⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄
"Guys! Did you see them? The new interviewee for the gift shop?" Sun exclaimed. His fellow bandmates looked around for said interviewee.
"I don't think we did," Moon admitted, "Brother?"
Eclipse shook his head, "Sorry, afraid not. PeyPey?” he turned to the human animatronic.
"Hmm...can't say I did, Caro?" his counterpart excitedly nodded.
"I did! I think they were absolutely darling, wouldn't you agree Sun?" she rested her head on PeyPey's shoulder.
Sun excitedly nodded his head, "I do! Darling and kind! They clapped for us after we played! Oh, I can't wait to meet them!!"
Moon chuckled, "That's if they get hired, brother dear. And knowing the luck with past interviews, I'm afraid their chances look slim."
Eclipse clicked his tongue, "Well, never say never, Moon. Don't sour Sun's optimism."
PeyPey nodded in agreement, "I think this is the first one to actually stop and watch a bit of our show.”
"Right you are! I'm sure we've more than grabbed their attention, enough so to have them really aiming to win this interview~!" Sun sang out as he began to put his guitar away. The rest of the band mates followed suit with their own instruments.
"Well, possibly…maaaybeee," his lunar brother teased as he put on his neck ruffle.
"I just hope it all turns out okay," Eclipse added while also fitting his own neck garment on.
"Oh come now, I'm sure they'll ace it! They've already made quite the impression on Sun, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to convince the company otherwise if it all came down to it," Caro commented.
Her other half chiming in, "It'd be nice to finally open up the gift shop. The staff bots help a lot but none have what the higher ups are looking for, even with all the programming they do."
Moon hummed in thought, "What do you suppose they're looking for?" He opened his palms as if waiting for something. All eyes turned to PeyPey.
"Well...someone kind and patient, who can connect with guests, and…someone who has experience with children? Especially the younger ones. Someone who has a real knack for it," he concluded.
Eclipse twirled his drumstick. "That sounds about right. Certainly the type of person I'd want working in a gift shop right next to a daycare," he smiled.
"Speaking of daycare: our other jobs await! Come on!" Sun spun his rays as he ran off to the growing number of children waiting to get checked in.
Eclipse laughed and followed his brother. "Hold on now! Let me just wrangle up PeyPey and Caro!" Moon called over to his brothers.
He held out his arms and nodded towards the two animatronics. Both of which did a quick jump into the air. After a small popping sound and puff of clouds, they were the size of pineapples. Landing softly into Moon's embrace.
"Why they made you two as both small and tall will always confuse me," he quipped as he jogged over to the check in.
"Aww, Moon, don't you find us helpful when the kids get into small spaces? Or when you need an extra pair of hands for paperwork?" Caro asked while tugging on his ruffle.
The animatronic rolled his eyes with a smile, "I suppose so."
"Or how about when you need us to walk around the daycare during nap time? The other two aren't aren't too great at sneaking like us three. Especially on a full day. Are we helpful then? Or how about—" PeyPey's words got cut short by Moon's hand gently patting his head.
"Alright alright! You're both helpful even when the size of fruits! Happy?" he exasperated. The pair nodded, satisfied with his answer.
⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄
The gift shop was pretty homey, reminiscent of a mom and pop shop, and matching the personality of the daycare indeed. Faint primary colored wooden walls surrounded you, accompanied by cartoons of the attendants frolicking about. Ivory tiled flooring at your feet, white wooden shelves with card labels for what would be set out. ‘Sun plush toys here,’ read the one. ‘Eclipse plush toys here,’ read another. The shop was well kept. No dust in sight and your reflection smiled back at you from the floor.
Yep, well kept.
"Alright, I've got your papers all settled here. Now let's see…" What would be your manager beckoning you to the front register. You loudly gulped and nodded as you made your way to her.
She was a warm woman. Pansy was what she went by. She was average height and wore a black button up with some slacks. A pen held up her messy bun. Glasses hung at the bridge of her nose. During your initial interaction, you'd find out that not only was she this giftshop's manager, but the manager of pretty much every other shop here in the pizzaplex. How does she manage all the inventory and employees? You'd never know. Trying to think about it made your balance shift off its axis. Even with the technological advancements of staff bots roaming around, managing that many stores must be exhausting. What with customer service whilst also making sure everyone on the team was okay.
"Your resume is nice, your experience certainly fits our criteria. We would love to have you, but you must answer one question correctly," she watched you through the rims of her glasses.
With nervous eyes, you nodded at her once more. Urging her to continue.
"When you see a child begin to cry after a fall, what do you do?" The question itself wasn't one you were expecting.
Befuddled, you recounted the times that child was Gregory. "I...I don't make it into a big deal. If I do, they learn that every little problem is a bigger deal than it's supposed to be. Help them up, make sure they're okay and point out how there's no injury. Gravitate their attention to something else," you glanced back at her and tried to read her reaction.
This was how you raised Gregory. For whatever accident happened. You made sure not to baby him as much, and to show him ways to get back up. On the off chance you weren't around. It's how your parents had raised you, so you raised your little brother the same way.
She nodded and scribbled a few things onto her pad, "Well, consider yourself hired!" She immediately grabbed your hand and shook it.
Your air left your lungs in a gasp, “Really?” attempting to match the strength in her own handshake.
"Of course! Every interview I've had failed to give an honest answer. It's always, 'cradle them until they stop crying' or 'leave them there to cry until they stop', I was beginning to doubt I'd ever open this shop up!" her laughter raised into the ceiling.
"The position you're applying for is no daycare attendant, but to hire someone without at least that sort of experience? Right next to a daycare?" she waved her opposite hand, "Don't even get me started! I know I can confidently leave you here to handle any child. After your training period of course! If you can calm a kid down before the waterworks, you've made it!" her laughter died down as did her handshake.
Your mouth hung open in a smile, "Well-thanks! I owe it all to raising one!"
Her eyes widened a bit, and her hand stilled. "You're a parent…?" she asked as if it was the most otherworldly thing she'd ever heard.
"Oh—! No, no! I raised my younger brother!" you laughed.
She sighed a breath of relief. "Goodness—I was about to ask you for your skin routine!" You couldn't help the happiness constantly growing on your face.
Pansy wiped a tear from her eye, "Woo! What a hoot! Alright, what day are you able to start?" she asked, readjusting her glasses.
You stood there contemplating for a moment. In all honesty, you were ready to start then and there. You had been let go of your previous job due to seniority and having to make some cuts. Unfortunately, you were one of said cuts. A bit of worry seeped into your brain. What if they view you as too excited? Maybe a bit of a try-hard? You could wait until the shop was fully furnished. Or maybe the following day…tomorrow...yea!
“Tomorrow's good! But of course I can see the shop needs its products, so I don't mind waiting until it's all stocked up, whichever works best!"
Your manager's smile grew, "I'll notify you once the shops all settled in, we'll start easy. Just some managing the floor and customer service, how's that sound?"
You happily offered your hand, "Sounds like a plan, I look forward to it!" She matched your enthusiasm with a firm handshake. The second one of the meeting. "As do I. Welcome to the family!"
You felt something in your grasp once she let go. Your name tag. A pretty, holographic lenticular tag. Shifting it to the left would shine a sun, in the middle a calm eclipse, and to the left, a sleepy moon. You stared in awe at the exquisite piece of plastic. This was the most beautiful name tag you'd ever been given.
“We'll get this little guy properly labeled with your name in a second, love. Just need to remember where I left that pesky hand machine…” she mumbled the last sentence as she walked around the front desk to look for it.
⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄
"Moonie I simply must know!" Sun grunted as he tried reaching the daycare's front doors. His brother held him back without much struggle.
"We'll know in due time Sun. No need to pry for information," he chuckled.
Eclipse had started a game with the kids. A classic game of cops and robbers. Such a game in the daycare proved to exercise a kid's brain. With many places to hide such as the ball pit, jungle gyms, slides, cubbies, and so on, one had to get creative in this space. This time the attendants were playing the cops and the kids were the robbers. Caro and PeyPey had more luck than the lunar and solar triplets. Their smaller size proved useful in getting the stealthiest of kids. They'd started a system of chasing the kids out of hiding and straight into Eclipse's waiting arms.
"Come on Sun, don't you want to play with the kids? It's cops and robbers, one of your favorites,” Moon tried convincing his twin.
"But Moon! What if we never find out? What if they didn't get hired?" Sun whined in his brother's hold.
Moon sighed and reluctantly carried a protesting Sun to the game. "You had confidence earlier. Where has it gone?" The animatronic passed by the window, not thinking much of it.
"Oh hey it's the interviewee!" Caro exclaimed as she popped her head out of a jungle gym.
"Where?” Sun jumped out of Moon's hold with his eyes darting across the room.
"Out there, they're shaking hands with Pansy...I think I see something sparkly on their clothing," Eclipse added while carrying four giggling children.
His solar twin excitedly gasped and ran over to watch. What he said was very much true. There you were, talking with Pansy as if the two of you were old friends. A fresh name tag glistening below your smile.
"I can't thank you enough Pansy, thank you!" you exclaimed.
Your manager shook her head. "No, no—I should be thanking you! Two years this shop has been here—two years without a proper employee. You're doing wonders by just being you, love!" She smiled warmly.
You felt bashful and rubbed the back of your neck. "Aww, I'm glad we could help each other then! I look forward to being able to help in any way I can!"
She patted your back with vigor. "There we are! That's what I like to hear!"
Sun failed to notice bandmates and children crowding behind him to get a look at the new hire.
"They did it! I see their name tag!" Caro hollered from Eclipse's shoulder.
Moon nodded, impressed. "Huh, Look at that."
All comments fell on deaf ears. You did it. Finally they found someone competent enough to run the gift shop! Someone who's genuine—kind even! Sun couldn't contain his excited rays dancing about as he watched, resembling a puppy happily wagging its tail. He could see it now: his siblings and friends all palling around, with you in the middle! Catching up and having a swell time as you take your lunch break. Sun sighed at the thought.
Pansy turned curiously at all the muffled yelling. Her laughter got caught in her throat, "Oh! Would you look at that!"
Curious, you peered towards the direction she was looking in and gasped. Not only the animatronics, but the children as well had been watching you. Not knowing what else to do, you offered a small smile and waved. The crowd waved back with a muffled "Hi!" except for Sun. He stood there with his shoulders relaxed and smile tilted.
As you were about to take a step, he joyously screamed and launched himself away from the window. The kids erupting in laughter as Eclipse and Moon can be seen calling out to him in chase. Caro and PeyPey, still at the window, poofed themselves to their tallest height, herding the kids away from the front door.
Sun rushed out with a trail of smoke behind him. He was a foot away from you in an instant. "Hello there! My name is Sun! I'm one of five daycare attendants and a member of the Starlights band! Who might you be, dear?" he cheerily asked.
His height was alarming. You barely reached his chest. While his tone of voice was welcoming, and you couldn't help the anxious flips your stomach did when you briefly raised your eyes up to his. This was the performer who winked at you—a type of interaction you weren't used to. His charming transatlantic accent didn't do you any favors either. You quickly glanced at Pansy for guidance. The only guidance being a nod to go ahead.
Your name trailed out of your mouth awkwardly as you reached a hand out for Sun to shake. "A lovely name! An absolutely darling name!” He matched the same enthusiasm of Pansy’s.
His siblings caught up to him. "Sun! You can't just run off like that, we've got children to look after!" Eclipse scolded as he placed a hand on Sun's shoulder.
“Yes, just look at them all wiggling about in your absence." Moon observed once he reached the small crowd amongst you.
You peered past Sun's waist. The children had been trying to weave themselves through the other two attendants. So much so that you've noticed the two sprouted a second pair of arms just to manage the lot.
"I'm sorry…" you trailed off. You didn't mean to cause this much excitement.
Eclipse shook his head, "Think nothing of it. It's our brother's fault, truly. We really must go before they get any more restless," he admitted with a short bow. Pulling his solar brother by the arm with him to the daycare.
"We'll be seeing you around!" Sun called from Eclipse's grasp.
"Yes, sorry for the short introduction—I'm Moon, that one's Eclipse. The girl is Caro and the boy is PeyPey, the two there at the window," the lunar animatronic gave a small bow in turn. "We look forward to working with you, dear," rushing off to help get Sun back in.
You faintly heard Moon and Eclipse scolding their brother. Who in turn could only muster up "I couldn't help myself!" Your brain wracked against your skull. All three were charming, you had to admit. What with their manners, transatlantic accents, and just the way they carried themselves with each other.
Both Moon and Eclipse smacked Sun upside the head in a playful manner before running in through the front doors. The latter took this as an opportunity for a chase. From the window you could see the children and two human animatronics briefly pause their actions. All heads following Moon and Eclipse as they excitedly ran across from them. The crowd turned their heads to Sun. All of them caught momentum once they noticed the attendant had begun to go after them as well. The children shrilled in joy as the other two attendants joined. Scooping up any stragglers on the way.
Pansy burst out laughing once more. "Those five know how to liven things up around here. Get ready to see more of them, especially with their merchandise in the giftshop."
You sheepishly smiled, "Can't wait!” Your eyes glued to the window a few feet from you. Admittedly, you missed when Gregory was that small. Laughing at almost everything, getting excited over the smallest things. It made your heart feel warm. This must've been how your own parents felt when you yourself grew up.

My hurt/comfort request:
Reader and eddie somehow survived the upside down together, despite spending time in the hospital afterward for a good few weeks. Now it's well after all that hell, but reader isn't doing well mentally. They keep pushing Eddie away, indulge in drinking far too much, and rely on pills to feel numb. But the PTSD is strong, and nightmares won't go away. Sleep is a luxury now.
One night reader risks calling Eddie while drinking, only to hang up after a few words feeling like it was a mistake. Eddie doesn't take it lightly and comes over to find reader on the floor with a bottle of alcohol, crying and shaking from their last nightmare. Comfort ensues.
Feel free to change anything if you write this!! I know it's a pretty heavy prompt but I rarely see people explore the PTSD side of things with these characters. We forget how much hell the show actually portrayed. (Apologies for the long request lol)
Thanks so much for the request, lovely! This is exactly what I was looking for!
cw: mention of PTSD, reader’s deteriorating mental heath, and abuse of both alcohol and medication, hurt/comfort
You didn’t know how you did it, but after being dragged through hell and back, you had barely escaped death in the Upside Down. Both you and your boyfriend Eddie had been experienced the most unimaginable injuries, seeking immediate help at the hospital even though you knew that they wouldn’t believe how you had gotten hurt so badly.
Both of you had spent weeks there, racking up outrages bills as you were nursed back to health. Eddie had been worse than you, though, having to be on life support, but you were definitely suffering more mentally. Even though you had escaped the Upside Down physically, you hadn’t been able to in your mind.
All of the horrific, traumatic images replayed in your head on a torturous loop that you hadn’t been able to shake. It was as if you had never left even after months of being back in the real world. You couldn’t think of anything else. Especially when it was time to go to bed. Even falling asleep next to Eddie didn’t help. You still somehow always woke up screaming.
Eddie did his best, but it was so hard to watch you fall apart right before him. The person that he loved the most was in absolute shambles and you wouldn’t let him help you. You just insisted that you were fine and told him to leave it alone whenever he suggested alternatives to your unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Instead of seeking therapy like you probably should have, you resorted to the pills you had been prescribed for your anxiety and alcohol to numb your pain. If you weren’t drinking, you were popping pills after pill, and when you were really desperate, you’d combine them, even though it said very clearly on the bottle not to mix them with alcohol.
Over time, you favored your new obsessions over your own boyfriend. You found yourself pushing him away, not wanting to hear his judgement, even though you knew very well that he’d never judge you. He just cared for you in a way no one else did and it made him sick to sit by and watch you self-sabotage.
You sat on the floor of your bathroom, surrounded by empty beer bottles, your phone right in front of you, practically begging you to call your boyfriend who you hadn’t spoken to in weeks. And it wasn’t because you didn’t want to. It was because you couldn’t. You had convinced yourself that he had been upset with you and you just didn’t want to hear it.
But you did want to hear his voice. It was one of the only things that brought you instant comfort, never failing to make all your worries fade away. You knew he would have picked up if you called so you didn’t know why you were so nervous.
You picked up the phone and used the rotary to dial his number, surprised you could do it with how drunk you were. It rang once before your picked up, Eddie’s lovely voice ringing through the phone.
“Y/n?” He asked, breathless, like he had been holding it for too long.
“Eddie,” you cried, feeling tears welling up in your eyes, desperately wishing he would hold you in his arms. You knew he would if you just asked. Why couldn’t you ask?
“Y/n, oh my god. It’s so good to hear your voice, honey. What’s wrong?”
“The nightmares-” you cut yourself off, terrified to tell him what they were really about. You felt like talking about them would make them even worse.
“What about them? Have they gotten worse?” Eddie could always somehow read your mind. Maybe that was why you worked so well together. If you were even together anymore. You wouldn’t have been surprised if he would have broken up with you because of you pushing him away. You thought you deserved it.
You didn’t know why, but you pulled the phone away from your ear and put it back on top of the rotary, scooting away from it once it rang again. You knew it was Eddie and you didn’t want to talk to him anymore. Calling him was a mistake.
You curled up and buried your face into your knees, letting out soft sobs as the nightmares flashed in your head. They were always the same. Always a reminder of the trauma you had gone through. You in Vecna’s clutches, so close to death until you found yourself in Eddie’s arms, him cradling your almost lifeless bodies in his hands, letting out wail and wail as he begged for you to come back.
You cracked open another beer and shotgunned it, before laying on the cold, hard tile, left alone with nothing but your thoughts. Nothing could fix it, nothing could save you. You were just hopeless.
The bathroom door bursted open and you sat up, startled by the sudden noise. There, in the doorway was your boyfriend Eddie, a duffle bag in his hand. He let it fall to the floor and headed toward you before dropping to the tile and pulling you into his lap.
You wrapped your arms around him and buried your face into his neck, sobbing into it while he ran his hands up and down your back as a way to comfort you. He was always so good at it.
“I’m sorry I hung up on you,” you told him when you had run out of tears. He just shook his head and brought his hands up to your face, stroking your cheeks with the pads of his thumbs.
“You have nothing to apologize for. You’ve been going through things that people couldn’t even imagine.” Eddie knew how much you were struggling and it broke his heart that you were blaming yourself for doing what you needed to do to heal.
“But I pushed you away.” Your eyebrows furrowed and you suddenly felt silly for thinking that Eddie would have been mad at you. He couldn’t have been mad at you if he tried.
“You needed your space. I’ll always wait for you, you know that.” You did know that. He had told you those exact words time and time again, especially in the past few months, when you had been going through your darkest times.
“I-I thought you were going to break up with me.” Tears started welling up in your eyes again and Eddie was quick to wipe away the ones that fell.
“Why would I do that? I love you. Nothing could make me want to leave you. You know that, right?” Sometimes he was concerned by how much he loved you. That he would defend you even when he knew you were wrong. He was always just so desperate to be on your side.
“I do now,” you nodded then looked around at all of the empty bottles that surrounded you. You couldn’t believe that you had consumed all of that alcohol in such a short amount of time. Maybe it was time to quit and get some help. You owed that to yourself after all you had gone through. “I-I think I want to go to therapy. I’m sick of feeling this way, so empty and hollow.”
“Honey,” he pulled you into a hug before pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. “I’m so proud of you.”
“You are?”
“Always,” he nodded. “Not everyone can see that they need to make changes in their life and you did. Even if it took you a minute to get there.”
“You’ll help me?” You asked, twirling a strand of his hair around your pointer finger.
“Don’t I always,” he chuckled. “Now c’mon. Let’s get you some water and then head to bed. I feel like you could really use some sleep.”
Eddie helped you up from the floor and carried you to the kitchen to get some much needed water. You looked up at him as he took you down the stairs, wondering how you had gotten so lucky as to have someone like him that was so caring and willing to help you even when you had treated him like absolute shit. You never thought that you had deserved him, but maybe after getting some help, you’d be able to work on that and realize that you really did deserve to have him in your life.

Tumblr media
“Please, Y/n, you can’t shut me out. You can’t.” Eddie was sat by your hospital bed beside you, hands holding the metal railing that was put up at the sides.
“I told you, Eddie,” Your voice broke, eye swollen, purple and red with a gleam of tears. “I don’t need to talk about it.”
“Don’t need to talk about it?” He repeated shockingly, more so to himself.
You’d woke up an three hours ago, having been out for almost thirteen hours after you’d passed out. You were a completely different person. You’d shut down, cold, unwilling to talk about what happened. You only wanted one thing, and that was to go home. Eddie didn’t know how to handle it. He knew he shouldn’t push you. You obviously needed time, but Eddie wasn’t a patient man, and he needed you to be okay.
“Please,” Your voice broke, looking over to him with a bruised eye, the skin around your nose red and aggravated. “I don’t know what you want me to say, Eddie, but I am fine. Just forget about it and get me out of here.”
The police had been there as soon as you woke up to question you. Did you recognize your attacker? Had you ever seen him before? What was he wearing? How tall? Did he tell you his name? What was his hair color? So many questions and so little answers. You hardly remembered it, yet you couldn’t seem to forget it.
Eddie had sent Wayne and all of his friends home. You weren’t up for visitors. Frankly, you were scaring Eddie. You seemed pissed, angry at the world and broken, not able to be fixed. You had a look in your eye that you’d never had before.
“I’ll go get the doctor.” He said tiredly. He didn’t sleep a wink in that uncomfortable chair.
Eddie left you alone then, leaving the room with a heavy sigh. He found your doctor at the front desk giving check out papers to another patient. “Dr. Grant?” Eddie called, gaining the female doctors attention. “How much longer till Y/n can leave?”
“We want to keep her just a few more hours for observation.” She checked her clipboard. “Just until we get the results of her head ct.”
Eddie nodded, not wanting to tell you the news of having to stay longer. He looked like a shell of a man, broken, eyes red rimmed and lips cracked from chewing on them. “I don’t know what to, doctor.” He looked to the floor. “She won’t talk to me.”
Dr. Grant frowned at Eddie, pulling him to the side so they could sit in the waiting room. She put her clipboard down on her lap. “Mr. Munson it will take some time before y/n will feel comfortable with talking. I can assure you that it’s perfectly normal in rape victims to shut down.”
He visibly cringed at her choice of words. Rape victim. You were a rape victim.
“I’m going to give you some paper work that may help you help her.” She smiled, placing a comforting hand on his knee. “I know it seems impossible, Mr. Munson, but eventually she will be okay again. It’ll just take time.”
Dr. Grant left the pamphlets on his lap as she left for her rounds. He looked down to find brightly colored pieces of paper, the words rape and assault plastered all over them. He got up quickly when his eyes teared up, disappearing into the bathroom and shoving the papers in his pocket.
Take time, it certainly did.
You acted as if nothing happened. You went on about your daily chores, cooked meals and cleaned the trailer. You were pretending, acting. Eddie couldn’t pretend nor could he forget. He was trying to be patient, that’s what the pamphlets told him. Be patient and understanding. But Eddie saw right through you. You weren’t that good of an actress.
He could see how broken you were, the look in your eyes was shattered and gone. The aches in your body you pretended weren’t there, how uncomfortable you were sleeping in the same bed with him. He offered to sleep on the couch and you’d nearly bitten his head off, saying you were fine and he was overreacting. All you were was angry when he talked to you. When anyone talked to you.
When it got late, when everything had been done for the day, you’d sit outside on the porch and stare up at the sky, smoking your pack of cigarettes that you’d swiped from Hopper a few weeks prior. You’d stay out there past midnight. Eddie hadn’t even seen you cry. You didn’t cry or get sad, only angry. That’s all you ever were.
You spent a lot of time in the shower, hours at a time during the night when you thought he was asleep. He never was. Neither of you slept peacefully anymore. You were barely eating. You tried, tried to keep up appearances to prove that you were okay, but you were slipping. It was getting harder and harder.
It had only been three days, but Eddie was starting to loose it. He couldn’t handle watching you fade away so quickly.
It was late when he finally had dozed off, but your absence in the bed woke him. His hand reached out to find you, only feeling the blanket and pillow. His eyes squinted in the dark, his heart beginning to race. Where were you?
He found you in the living room, one single lamp on that made your face an orange color, staring off into space with a blanket wrapped around you. Eddie frowned, turning on the kitchen light that made you jump slightly.
He tried to ignore the way you stiffened when he sat down, sitting a few feet away from you. He stared at you the entire time, trying to read your face. You looked broken. Utterly broken and so, so sad.
“Sweetheart,” Eddie began, sighing deeply. “I can’t keep watching you like this. I’m trying to…give you time, but it’s killing me watching you-” He stopped when he felt a lump build in his throat, not wanting to cry in front of you.
“I’m fine.” You dismissed him every time, not wanting to entertain the idea of breaking down in front of him. The mere fact he knew what happened, what everyone knew, made you feel weak and disgusting. Like a huge spotlight was on you. It was the worst feeling you’d ever felt, like you were standing naked on a stage, vulnerable and exposed.
Eddie bit his cheek and looked away. “No, you’re not, Y/n.” He swallowed roughly, looking back to you. “And that’s okay. I know you feel like it’s not, but it is. You don’t have to shut me out. Please, baby, you can’t shut me out.”
You squinted your eyes shut and looked to the wall. “Eddie,” You begged. “I can’t.”
You can’t.
That was the first time you had said that. That you couldn’t talk about it. Your voice had broke, just only a little. It was the first time he’d seen real emotion in three days. He didn’t want to push you, but you had to let it out. There was no way you could keep on living like this. It wasn’t healthy.
Eddie looked toward the window, it was pitch black outside, not even the flood lights were on. They had quit working a few weeks ago and no one had come to fix it yet. He swallowed back anxiety and nausea. “I know you’re scared-”
“No, you don’t.” You snapped, still refusing to look at him. “You don’t know how I feel. Nobody knows how I feel. They’re just trying to be nice.”
“Then tell me, baby.” He begged, placing his hand on your knee.
You shoved it off, storming up and escaping to the bathroom, slamming the door and locking it just as quick. The shower was turned on within seconds, then he heard you crying, trying to muffle it with the sound of your sweater, or maybe it was a towel.
You hated him. You had to. There couldn’t have been no other explanation for your anger and hatred. You blamed him for what happened, for not coming to your rescue sooner, you just wouldn’t admit out loud. He felt like you’d been killed that night, like your very spirit had been snuffed away like a lit match. He missed you. It was his fault. It was because of him. He was the reason your spirit was gone.
He put his head in his hands and cried.
“I don’t know what I’m doing, Wayne. She won’t talk to me. She’ll barely even look at me. She won’t let me touch her. She won’t…she won’t tell me what happened. She blames me. I know she does.” Eddie pushed out air between his lips, struggling to breath. He’d showed up to Wayne’s mid panic attack one morning when you refused to get out of bed. The both of you almost broke out in a fight, except you wouldn’t fight. You didn’t have the energy. It had been another three days gone by.
He was sitting on his uncle’s old sofa, going back and forth from putting his head between his knees or fisting his hair with his hands. Wayne was making himself a fresh cup of coffee, watching as his nephew suffer through his anxiety.
“No, buddy, she doesn’t. She’s just hurtin’.” He poured the coffee into his mug.
“Then why won’t she let me in?” He bounced his knee. “Why won’t she let me help her? She blames me.”
“Try to imagine yourself in her shoes, Ed.” Wayne came over, cradling his mug as he pulled out the kitchen chair, sitting himself in front of his nephew.
“I can’t.” Eddie shook his head. “I can’t even begin to imagine what she’s feeling.”
“That’s my point.” His uncle continued, raising his mug. “You don’t have the slightest idea what she’s going through, you’ve got to give her more time. It’s not even been a week yet, buddy. I know you’re anxious to help her. She’s lucky to have you.”
She’s lucky to have you.
He bit his nail nervously, thinking back to leaving you at the trailer, covered in blankets and refusing to get out of bed. He shouldn’t have left you, but he was on the verge of another breakdown and needed his uncle.
“Why is she so angry?” He gulped, his throat dry from his quick breathing. “I’ve never seen her this angry before.”
“Because she doesn’t know how to process what she went through.” Wayne placed his coffee on the table after another sip. “When we’re hurtin’, sometimes it turns to anger. I think you can relate to that, huh?”
He could. With the kind of life he led, his childhood, everything after vecna and the trauma he endured, he knew exactly what his father figure was talking about. When you hurt, when you have nothing else to feel, you get pissed off.
When Eddie got back home, he knew you were still in bed. The lights were off, the tv was off. The poor fish you shared hadn’t been fed yet. He quietly walked into your shared bedroom, the sunlight peering through the curtains, illuminating your face. The blankets were tangled around you, your arms hugging the pillow. You stared at the wall into nothingness, s blank look on your face that spoke volumes of emotion. You were heartbroken.
Eddie watched you for awhile, making his way to sit at the foot of the bed. He sat by your feet, putting his hand on your blanket covered ankles, squeezing them reassuringly. “How about something to eat, huh?”
It took you several seconds to respond. “I’m not hungry.”
He would much rather you be angry than like this. A zombie, unwillingly to move or breath, not able to function or communicate with him.
“What about some tea?” He tried, eyes soft and round, his hand softly rubbing circles on your leg.
You cringed under his touch, shaking your head. “I don’t want tea, Eddie.”
Then, Eddie’s throat filled with a ball of sick, but he quickly forced it back down. You said his name with such malice, such hatred and venom that told him everything he needed to know. You did blame him.
His eyes filled with tears and he stared at the wall. “I’m so sorry, baby.” He closed his eyes. “I’m so sorry for everything.”
He’d said it time and time again, but his words came out in a desperation that he hadn’t yet conveyed to you.
“I don’t blame you for hating me.” He sniffled, his curls shaking with the weight of his shoulders. “I’m to blame and-”
“Eddie, please,” You sobbed, making him practically flinch in surprise. You were crying. “Stop it.”
He let out a whimper, falling to his knees so he could kneel at your head. “Honey,” He cried. “My baby girl, I can’t stand the thought of you hating me. Please, angel, just let me take care of you. Talk to me. Let me in.” He was begging you with a cracked, broken voice that made you sob right along with him.
His hand went to touch your cheek, but you flinched and sat up, bringing the blankets up to your chest. “It’s not you, Eddie!” You blubbered, snot running down your nose. “I don’t hate you! You can’t think that! P-please, don’t think that!”
He crawled up on the bed to sit in front of you, hot tears still rolling down his face. “Then why are you shutting me out? We’re supposed to be a team! We promised each other! You promised me and I promised you! Please, baby, I have to know what happened! It’s killing me!”
“I can’t!” You exclaimed, your tousled up hair falling at the sides. “Oh, God, Eddie, I can’t! I can’t talk about it! I can’t do anything! I just want to lay here and die!” You coiled over and wailed broken-heartedly, a song of cries that boiled out of your throat and paralyzed you. You curled up into a ball and practically screamed into the blankets. Eddie was shaking, bringing up a hand to bit as hard as he could, not knowing if you would allow him to touch you,
He placed one hand on you gently, and when you didn’t pull away, he quickly gathered you in his arms. “I’m here, baby. I’m here. I’m here, sweetheart. Just let it out. Let it out, let it out.”
You let him hold you, and in desperation of the moment, you wrapped your arm around his leg to bring the heat of his body flush to yours. You bawled your heart out into him, emptying all your fears and sorrow.
“I- I can’t stop- thinking a-bout him!” You said hysterically, your tears making his jean covered knee damp. “It hurt so-so bad, Eddie!” It sounded like your cries caused you physical pain, your words coming out choppy and broken.
Your bruised ribs ached from your heavy sobs, your hands going to hold your stomach. “God, oh, God, Eddie, I can’t do it! I can’t! I can’t!”
“You don’t have to.” He said firmly, trying to control his own sobs so you could understand him. “You give all that pain to me, okay? You give it all to me. I can handle it. You let me take care of you. I’m always going to take care of you, sweetheart.”
Your bruised nose had started to bleed onto his jeans, going unnoticed from the both of you. You were hyperventilating, shaking and practically convulsing in his arms.
“Come on, baby,” He held you to his chest, your body still curled up against him. “It’s okay, I’m here. Just let it out. Tell me what you need to.”
It hurt. It hurt so bad. He hurt me so bad and I couldn’t stop him. I’m so scared. I’m scared he’s going to find me. I don’t want you to look at me differently. I feel so weak. Please still love me. Please stay with me. Don’t tell anyone I’m afraid.
You cried for so many things, but he listened to every last word you had to offer him. You told him what happened. A man had followed you into the bedroom, forced you down and split your legs apart, punching you in the nose and kneeing you in the ribs, shoving himself inside you like a sword, piercing it’s way into you roughly. You had cried and cried, screamed and begged, till you didn’t, finally going into shock and laying there, taking it.
Eddie had tried his hardest not to breakdown at your confession, but he could only do so much. He held you into the dark of night, promising what he had said. He was always going to take care of you.

🦇 You, Again Book Review 🦇
❓ #QOTD Have you ever been to New York (if yes, what's your go-to spot, if no, what's your favorite type of bagel)?❓ 🦇 When Ari and Josh first meet, the wrong kind of sparks fly. They hate each other. Instantly. A free-spirited, struggling comedian who likes to keep things casual, Ari sublets, takes gigs, & she never sleeps over after hooking up. Born-and-bred Manhattanite Josh has ambitious plans: Take the culinary world by storm, find The One, & make her breakfast in his spotless kitchen. They have absolutely nothing in common...except that they keep crossing paths. As they're both reeling from ego-bruising breakups, a chance encounter leads to a surprising connection: friendship. Turns out, spending time with your former nemesis is fun when you're too sad to hate each other--& too sad for hate sex. Can they stop hating each other long enough to fall in love?
💜 I have so many conflicting thoughts & feelings about this book. Prose that might seem witty & modern to some will come off as cringe (over-attempting at 'hip' & relevant) to others. Yet there's a sort of magnetism to the entire thing, like trying to look away from a train crash running in slow motion. The concept of two people constantly colliding (getting second & third chances to repair the bad first impression they made on one another) is definitely intriguing, & works perfectly in a setting like New York City. There's also something painfully realistic about hurt people finding comfort in one another, learning how to heal by helping the other heal. The underlying themes--healing, recognizing your self-worth, making your own legacy--resonate on every page. There's also a little love letter to New York here, the same way The Bear is a love letter to Chicago (& this book definitely screams The Bear vibes, for those of you who FINALLY watched it).
💙 Unfortunately, both characters are dreadfully unlikeable. They're both equally stubborn, & since this is an opposites attract romance, they clash constantly when they think they're in the right. Poor Josh has his heart wide open but moves too fast, while Ari has her heart under lock & key with unrelenting skepticism in relationships (in complete conflict with her carefree attitude). As much as I love my bi rep (especially during Bisexuality Awareness Month), Ari's sex-focused rep reads as problematic. There's nothing wrong with enjoying sex or threesomes, but it's almost used as Ari's main characteristic; an insulting cliche that bisexuals only care about one thing.
🦇 Recommended to fans of Will They or Won't They & Funny Feelings.

💬 Quotes ❝ Better to be the one who walks away than the person who gets left behind. ❞ ❝ "I like being with you more than I like being by myself.” ❞ ❝ Right now, “just friends” is a comfortable certainty. A gravity blanket. A subtle vanilla-scented candle. And the alternative is a giant blinking cursor and a blank document. Sometimes it feels like Josh has already been poking around that page. Writing passages and deleting them before she’s ready to open it. ❞ ❝ "They’re the antidote to every little thing you hate about yourself. They can see past it when you can’t.” ❞ ❝ “No one should marry the person who makes them happy. Marry the person you want by your side at your lowest p- point. Marry the person you… you never get sick of. Who you always want more from. Who makes you proud to be theirs...If that’s your person, it’s worth the risk. Because your person will see the best version of you. They’ll have a whole list of reasons why they think you’re irreplaceable. And they’ll tell you.” ❞

You stare blankly into the distance of your bathroom, your eyes landing on nothing specifically, simply zoning out from the world around you. It was dark besides the blue-tinted night light plugged into the wall across from you. The floor below you was hard and cold, the expensive tile felt like stone under you as your limbs pulled close to your chest, you stayed deadly still. The aftermath ritual of relapsing. Moments ago you were dry heaving, tears streaming down your face as you desperately scratched away at your skin trying to find that small blade hidden away in attempts you'd forget. Your mind was racing so fast that you couldn’t keep track of a single thought for more than a second, and it wouldn't stop. And now, you sit in a weird comfortable peace, face dry of tears and incredibly tired. Your limbs burned from your self-inflicted torture but you couldn't be bothered to focus on it.
Today hadn't been a hard day exactly. Actually, it had been a relatively good week, but these things just creep up on you like that. Ended up with you coming to the alternative that wasn't exactly smart but you trusted it, it has worked before. You ignored Thor calling you down for dinner, it wasn't an unusual thing for an avenger to refuse and miss out. Everyone was dealing with their own shit. You hoped no one would notice your absence. But when have you ever been right before?
Your bathroom door was slightly cracked open, but it was slowly nudged further open as you heard a soft knock at your door. A familiar gruff voice called your name. It was Bucky, Bucky's room was across from yours and you both shared a small kitchen and common area as you two were the only ones on the floor of Starks enormous tower. You suffered from insomnia and he suffered from horrible night terrors that left him screaming awake. So naturally, the two of you found comfort in each other, whether it be sharing a bed for the night or being in each other's presence in the kitchen or living room in the dead of night when neither of you could bear to sleep. Bucky wasn't foreign to your addiction, to him walking in on your aftermath ritual of dissociating on a cold, hard floor.
“Doll?” his voice sounded worried from the other side of the door. You couldn't bear to tear your eyes away from whatever you were staring at, or even muster up a small noise as a response. You didn't move. Nonetheless, he pushed the rest of your door open, and right as he came into view you were void of your trance. Your eyes snapped to him. Bucky stood with his vibranium hand gripping the doorknob, his metal finger wrapped tighter as he processed the sight of you. His eyes were wide and worried, and a wave of terror flashed across his face.
You only bow your head in shame, you couldn’t look at him and see how disgust and disappointment filled his face. Bucky's footsteps ascended towards you, you wanted to yell and push him away and lock the door and never let anyone back in but, you were tired and he was much stronger than you. So you continued to sit still until the flesh warmth of Bucky's hand rose to your face, directing you to look at him. His face showed so many emotions you couldn't begin to suspect what he was feeling. He was just staring into your eyes, those perfect ocean blue eyes. He slowly shook his head disapprovingly.
You blinked, once, twice. Your throat croaked as you attempted to apologize to the man in front of you but nothing came out.
Your eyes diverted down again, you felt on fire under his stare. “Do I need to take you to the med wing?”
He asked this question every time, and you always shot your head up and would rapidly shake your head and beg him not to carry you away to be fixed by an unfamiliar doctor and have to bear the disapproving looks of anyone you saw in the hall. And word gets around fast in the tower to by the end of the night everyone would know of your damage.
“Bucky.” your voice came out hoarse but quick. “Please don't make me go, please.” He just looked back at you, leaving you unanswered. His hand still held steady on your face, he was squatting down to your height. The silence was deafening but as soon as you were about to make up some excuse for your relapse, his hand left your face and the warmth left your body with it making you feel cold and weak once again.
“Same place as last time?’ Bucky asked but it sounded more like a statement than a question as he opened a cabinet and grabbed bandages and your usual stuff to clean the open wounds on your arms.
You didn't usually clean yourself up after, besides just getting water and cleaning up extra blood. All your life you left the scars untreated. You were never sure if you did this as an extra way of torture, letting the sting of the cuts linger longer or because that meant the marks would be more apparent for longer, leaving a reminder for you all the time. The first time Bucky had walked in on you, he ran to bruce's lab and back after you begged and pleaded with him not to take you to the med bay. And he came back with enough bandages to cover your wounds and then by the next day you found a box of bandages and tape as well as hydrogen peroxide to clean your wounds sitting on your bed in a Walgreens bag. A small gesture that weirdly made you want to do it less, but you would never tell Bucky that.
Bucky turned back to you with a bottle and cotton pads in his hands, he sat across from you on the bathroom floor. Your eyes averted away from his face, you couldn't hide the embarrassment on your face, you felt like a little kid that made a mess just for someone else to unrightfully clean it up for you.
“Sweetheart, I need you to look at me.” his soft voice rang through your head, and as much as you didn't want to you obeyed. Your eyes traveled up Bucky's face to meet with his blue eyes, he looked tired and upset and suddenly another way of guilt went through you. “I'm going to clean this up, okay?” he waited patiently for your response, you just nodded tiredly. “This is going to sting, just tell me if it's too much, and I’ll stop.”
Slowly, Bucky grabbed your arm from your lap and he began running the clothes across the wounds. You watched the blood wash away just for it to keep coming up from the lines you created. You bit your lip, you felt like you were going to cry out but you were simply too drained to shed another tear.
“Look at me.” bucky said, “I need you to look at me.”
You tore your eyes away from your wrist and met with his eyes once again. His icy blue eyes that you could get lost in, as cheesy as it sounds, you just genuinely could stare at him all day just to drown in the ocean he had for eyes. Bucky Barnes was an incredibly attractive man, you would not deny that, and almost every person on the planet would agree with you. Women swooned for him left and right in the 40s, as Steve would retell stories of their past life decades ago. But there was truly something so different about him. The shape of his nose and the hollow of his cheeks, his jawline looked like it was sculpted by the gods, and his smile. Oh god, his smile was such a beautiful and rare thing. During the past months of being close, you would sometimes do anything to get a good genuine smile out of him, even if it mean embarrassing yourself in the process.
“You're staring, dear,” Bucky spoke, and you looked down to see your arm had already been wrapped in the white bandages. Damn, had you been staring at him that long?
“You told me to look at you, not my fault.” shrugging your shoulders, beginning to pull your arm back to you but Bucky's grip tightened. Not enough to hurt you but enough just to keep you from pulling away from him. A moment of silence fell between you before he brought your arm up to his lips and he placed a gentle kiss on your bandaged skin. He looked back up to you before shifting his weight so he could lean in and continue to place another kiss on your forehead. The warmth spreads through you and makes you feel lighter and slightly better.
“I'm disappointed in you, doll,” he whispered. you nodded in agreement, knowing he should be. “You need to understand how much this hurts me too, everytime I see you like this, it hurts me so much because I care about you more than you imagine.”
He spoke clearly and genuinely, the words hit you hard in the chest. Making you feel equally better knowing he cared but also worst because you hurt him, one of the things in life you actively attempt to avoid. His eyes turned glossy and he swallowed hard and, suddenly your throat went dry again. You couldn’t speak a word of a response so you just bow your head again, averting eye contact so speaking to bucky would feel less intimidating.
“It has to hurt, it won't stop unless I do this.” you choked out, waterworks started up once again and the tears started streaming. “I'm sorry, buck. I just never know what else to do.”
Bucky grabbed you gently and pulled you into him, feeling his warmth more closely. He shushed you softly and wiped away the tears from your cheek as he placed another kiss on the top of your head. Holding you close to his chest, you would faintly hear his heartbeat over your racing thoughts, bringing you down back to earth as you focused on the beats of his chest. Eventually, you calmed down completely but bucky didn't let you go yet, he still held you close. He was slightly rocking you back and forth as he rubbed your back with his metal arm.
“Can you sit still and be good for a moment? I need to grab something real quick, sweetheart.” he pulled away just far enough so he could see your face. He wiped away whatever tears remained on your face. Bucky gave you a small reassuring smile as you nodded while mumbling a quiet agreement.
And soon enough he got up and the warmth of his body left you again feeling empty and you slumped back into the wall behind you. You felt so drained and limp you could have fallen unconscious right here an now. The quietness of the room felt intimating, it was so easy for you to grow accustomed to Bucky’s presence that it terrified you. You wondered if he would lie and leave and not come back, finally getting fed up with your self-destruction and cleaning up your messes. You wouldn’t blame him for it, leaving you, you didn't believe you deserves an ounce of his care. He was an ex-assassin and struggling to come back from being brainwashed to do horrible things without a choice, while now being in a new time, having to adjust to a new world. He needed to focus on himself and take time to recover. Not take care of you. But as soon as you were about to convince yourself Bucky wasn't coming back and that you did in fact deserved it he came through the bathroom door again, with a bowl in his hands.
You tilt your head, your eyebrows furrowed together in confusion to see a bowl of ice in his hands as he sets it down in between the two of you. bucky sits down next to you and grabs ahold of your unbandaged arm. “If it absolutely has to hurt,” he grabs a couple of cubes of ice and puts them in your hand to hold. “Holding ice for a while usually leaves a sting.”
As your fingers wrapped around the cold cubes in your hand, you waited and as he said, it left a small sting. You held it in your warm, sweaty hands until it melted and grabbed another fistful. Your eyes traveled up to Bucky’s face to see he was already looking at you with loving eyes.
“Bucky..” you began to speak, but your words fell short and nothing came out.
He sighed, “I'm not going to tell you to stop, because I understand what you’re feeling.” he paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts before continuing. “But I really care about you and it hurts knowing you have to harm yourself to feel better.”
“I'm sorry,” you said, was all you could think to say to him at this moment. You dropped the rest of the ice into the bowl and shoved it aside and shifted, trying to scoot your drained body close to bucky. “I'm sorry that I hurt you.”
Bucky blinked a few times before grabbing your face again and giving you another comforting kiss on your forehead. Both vibranium and flesh hands raised to hold your face, pulling all your attention onto him.
“Promise me that next time you feel like this. come to my room and ill take care of you, doll” he spoke sincerely. His eyes sparkled with admiration it almost made you want to cry.
You raised a shaky hand and stuck out your pinky finger in front of him. “Pink promise.”
Bucky's eyes shot from your face to your hand, and a small smile crept onto his face at your gesture. But nonetheless, he took his flesh hand in yours, repeating the line before both of you locked it with a kiss on the hand.
“Now let's get you to bed.”
And with that Bucky helped you up, guiding you slowly to your bedroom. He asked you if you wanted to change out of your clothes, and you just explained to him how tired you were and you flopped onto the bed. After tucking yourself comfortably under your blanket and settling to your side, Bucky followed after tugging off his shirt. His arms wrapped around you as he began to speak sweet nothings into the back of your head as you dozed off into sleep.

The Gift (3a) (Witch Steve AU)
previous: Chapter 2: The Aftermath next: Chapter 3 Boys Are Witches Too (Part B) Ao3 Link - Chapters will be updated ahead of Tumblr Content: steddie fic, 1K words
Last chapter, Steve had a haunting vision of his Nana before comforting Dustin about Eddie's near death. This chapter, family weighs in on Steve's decision to save Eddie and it's time to explain himself to his friends.
Chapter 3 Boys Are Witches Too (Part A)
“Steven, as soon as you get this message, call me,” Mary Harrington’s strident voice carries through the answering machine to Steve’s reluctant ears. He sighs, fiddling with the button that will rewind the cassette, ready to be written over later.
After leaving the hospital, he’s managed to get a few hours of uninterrupted sleep, in his own bed and without feeling the need to clutch at a weapon.
He had finally washed off the grit, blood, and ash of the Upside Down that had felt permanently embedded in his skin and hair. And the soft material of the sleep shirt and shorts he now wears feels like a sort of balm after the roughness of Eddie’s vest rubbing against his wounds the past few days.
But exhaustion still drags at Steve, and he’s irritated with having just walked into the staircase banister.
The vacant space to the left of his field of vision isn’t debilitating; he can see mostly fine, it’s just that his peripheral vision is off. But getting a hang of it on top of the physical and spiritual exhaustion of fighting Vecna and Eddie’s revival was just another pip on top of the shitty Cherries Jubilee of the past week.
Better than the alternative, he reminds himself. Eddie had woken up, which had broken open a reservoir of relief that Steve thought he’d already dealt with.
But seeing Eddie open his eyes and speak clearly and coherently had released an anxiety that Steve hadn’t even realised he had been worrying at, like unconsciously scratching at a scab.
That he brought Eddie back to life was all well and good, but what if Steve had damaged him in some way? Messed with the threads of destiny to the extent that he brought the other boy back wrong.
He hadn’t though. Other than a brief panic attack that his Uncle Wayne had talked him down from, holding Eddie’s face in his hands, breathing deep and calming breaths together, Eddie was alive and well.
Between the bustle of Hop coming back alive, the intrusion of Doc Owens, and starting to manage the charges against Eddie, Steve hadn’t been able to do much more than nod at the other guy from the back of the room.
Eddie had looked overwhelmed and pale, but he had stared at Steve with an unnerving intensity. Steve wonders whether he looks so ugly now with the one white eye that Eddie hadn’t been able to look away. Like a terrible car wreck on the side of the road.
And now his mother wants to talk to him. It’s been 48 hours since he reached across worlds and pulled Eddie through, and his mother Knows and wants to talk to him.
It wasn’t that long ago that Coleman had brought him into the principal’s office to discuss the ‘dangerous road’ he was taking as his grades tanked and he quit the swimming team. This feels unpleasantly similar.
He punches in the Chicago office number through to her direct line and greets her before she says anything.
A pregnant pause hangs in the air before she quietly asks, “What the hell did you do?”
Steve rubs at his forehead tiredly, “Time to break out the wooden spoon, Mom.”
“I can’t believe you did something so reckless. Was it The Sacrifice? Is that it? What did you give up? Not your life obviously, since you’re still able to call your mother two days later.”
She sounds so much like Nana sometimes, he thinks nostalgically. Wishing that she was alive and here to guide him right now.
“My eye. Only the one.”
“Was it Robin?” His mother had gotten to know Robin after the destruction of Starcourt Mall, even if it was only after the disastrous event that she’d been able to return to Hawkins. During their weekly phone calls, she had come to understand how deeply he cares for his friend.
“No, it’s a guy. Eddie. He got mixed up with the Upside Down too and I Saw it, Mom. It was going to be awful.”
“Still, you risked your life, baby.” Steve shifts on his feet as his mother’s voice thickens. Like him, she would rather pinch the tears away than let anyone see her cry so to hear it in her voice makes guilt settle heavily in his chest.
“It was worth it,” he insists.
She audibly sucks in a breath, “He means that much to you?”
“It’s not like that,” he says. “I mean, he’s a good guy,” he adds hastily. “But it was going to affect everyone, it was going to change Dustin.” She knows how much Dustin means to him.
“And,” he continues without much thought, “he really is a good guy. Like the best with the kids, he’s funny, and there’s just so much life to him, you know. I never could have lived with myself if I had done nothing.”
“Okay,” she hums, but Steve can’t tell whether he’s convinced her.
“You’re okay?”
“I’m okay,” he assures her.
Steve doesn’t bother to ask whether she’d told his father about what he had done; he’s pretty sure their secretaries have conveyed all communications for the last eighteen months.
During their Sunday phone calls, Mary talks about her work as an environmental lawyer and Steve talks about Robin and the kids; neither likes to delve deeper into their family dynamics.
He gives her a brief outline of the past week, leaving out the more violent events including the final battle, but gives her enough so that she understands that it’s over too.
Her gifts have always leaned more towards the earthy than the ethereal, like Steve’s and his Nana’s. So, when he tells her that he Knows this is done, a deep sigh of relief comes down the line. She hadn’t been able to convince him to leave Hawkins in ‘83 and now she won’t need to keep trying.
He hopes, a week later, standing in his kitchen this time, that his friends likewise accept his story...
If you liked anything, please consider leaving a comment over on Ao3 :-) It would make my day!

COMMENTS AND REBLOGS ALWAYS APPRECIATED 🥹❤️
You’ve lost loved ones more than most. It’s unchangeable, something you have to accept, and in time you will but here on your twentieth winter the loneliness creeps and burrows deeper and deeper yet.
Grief held tight to your toddler years with reckless abandon, a feeling you didn’t understand, then. After all, what was loss to a six-year-old? Not much, yet astoundingly a great deal all the same.
Your grandmother did her best, taking after you when news spread that martyrdom had occurred in a neighboring kingdom. She had hoped to hear another set of names, not that of her son and his beloved, but there was little she could have done. Fate picks and fate chooses. Your parents just had the misfortune of being on the wrong side of it.
She only wished she had implored her little boy further—to stay within the reaches of Greenwood. It was his decision to risk detection in the royale’s dominions. His decision to leave behind the life of being a witch’s son. She didn't blame him for it. The craft was not for everyone, that much was true, but how sad it was, then, that he was born too talented to hide it.
Acquiring you after his death was a feat in and of itself. Your grandmother was coerced to cash in a few favors around the village and send someone to grab you before you were sold or shipped off to an orphanage or worse. That wouldn’t be a life fit for a child, for her estranged granddaughter, and her loyal clientele agreed.
A young man by the name of Shouta Aizawa took up the challenge. He wanted to repay her for all her help with his sick friend. Poor fellow had long since passed on, but with her medicine it had been a peaceful death in lieu of the alternative. It’s only right that he helped the old maid retrieve her lost family.
You were brought home in a couple day’s time, Mr. Aizawa having to carry you due to the harsh burns upon your hands and feet. He told you your grandmother would have you fixed up in no time, all the while your lips remained sewn shut. The most he ever heard out of you were whimpers in the night, but nightmares were commonplace for the horrors you’d lived through.
Aizawa had nothing to offer but his company when you laid awake, sniffling. You refused to seek out any comfort, of which he was glad as he has little to give with his discomfiture.
Reaching your grandmother’s house, she welcomed you with open arms. Aizawa offered to help carry you, but your granny still had her strength in those years, lifting you into a soft bosom and promising a warm bed and a nice dinner. The old woman laid you to rest in what used to be your father’s room. It had been cleaned out for a decade or two, just recently swept and wiped down. A small bed and dresser stand against adjoining walls. Besides that, it was bare as bone.
“We’ll decorate it with all sorts of things you like when you’re feeling up to it,” Granny had said, tucking you in. “I’ll be back in a bit. Have to go thank that Mr. Aizawa for the two of us, now don’t I?”
You had no response, watching with sunken eyes as the woman left the room. You could hear her strong voice as she spoke to Aizawa.
“I know it’s not much, but here’s some tea for you. It’ll help ya sleep soundly.”
“Better give that to the kid, instead. She’s more restless than me, Granny.”
“I have more than enough. Go on and take it, it’ll only rot away in my cabinet.”
“You’re insistent.”
“Heh. Thought you knew that already, handsome.”
You could feel him rolling his eyes from here. He did that often, you’d learned. “If you need anything else, send one of your birds again, I guess.”
“Good to hear. Thank ya again. You’ve saved her from a terrible life.”
“Least I could do, Granny. See you when I see you.”
You waited, tense as footsteps echo throughout the small cabin. When your grandmother entered the room again, she carried a steaming, wooden mug and a bowl with some sort of mush within.
“Let’s take a gander at those burns, now.”
Nearly a month had gone before you began to speak again. The scars faded with the strange goop your granny made, and you showed an increasing interest in her work. She could only wonder how your father would have reacted, always ashamed of the magic running in his veins. She hoped there was peace with him and his wife in the afterlife. Downright angel she had been, sending letters and updates when she could. She never cared what he was made of—only what kind of person he was.
“Granny,” you called, the spitting image of them as you watched from atop a turned-over tree. Your grandmother dug up mushrooms, weeds and all sorts of forestry and you couldn’t help but wonder aloud, “What is all this stuff for?”
“My medicines, of course. Potions, too.”
“Potions?”
“Drinks imbued with magic. They can make ya disappear or look different.” Granny smiled as she peered over her shoulder at you. “Can even make one that’ll turn ya into an animal.”
“Any animal?” you asked, skeptical.
“Precisely,” she chuckled, tossing her finds into a woven basket.
You hesitated, looking down at your hands in thought.
“Wouldn’t that mean you’re a...um.”
“A witch, pumpkin?”
A wince pulled at your shoulders, expression pained to the depths only a toddler could manage.
“I don’t want you to be a witch, Granny.”
“Nothing wrong with being one, unless you’re an evil witch,” teased the woman, walking over to pinch your cheek. “You don’t think I’m evil, now do ya?”
“No!” you said, batting at her hand to rub at your sore flesh. “But they-they burn witches, Granny.”
She grinned mournfully down at you, nodding. “That they do, little bug.”
“They...burned my parents.”
“They did,” she concurred.
Your eyes watered as you trailed your hands over your skirt, retracing the embroidery patterns your grandma had sewn by hand. All sorts of creatures lined the fabric from birds to caterpillars. You liked the family of rabbits the most, they moved every so often, whiskers rattling out of the corner of your eye.
“Are they gonna burn you, too, Granny?” you whispered.
She shook her head, sitting next to you on the log as she wrapped an arm around you.
“Not here in Greenwood. Witches are safe here—sought after, even. We help the sick, tend to the elements of our choosing—“
“Elements?”
“See the moss on this log?”
“Yeah.”
“The leaves on the trees? Dew on the grass?”
“Yes, I see them.”
“That’s my element, little bug,” she said fondly, pulling away to grab the woven handle of her basket. “I’m a green witch. You can learn the craft, too, if you’d like.”
You thought about it, eyes wary. “What if I get in trouble?”
“You won’t. Not here,” Granny promised. “Unless you go turning the neighbor’s cows blue, then you’re done for.”
You giggled at that, taking her hands as she stood and pulled you to your feet.
“Being a witch isn’t a bad thing, sprout. I can show you all the good it can do, if you’d like to learn.”
You hummed, glancing down at her basket of mushroom caps and dandelions. Birds sung above you, a Robin tweeting its little tune.
“When can I start?”
Granny smiled.
🌿🌿🌿
You wipe your hand dry on your skirt, finishing up with the sigil as it sinks deep into the snowy layer and deeper yet into the ground where your grandmother now rests peacefully.
Her grave will provide a bountiful growth of flowers when spring comes; you made sure to include all her favorites. Mixing in some medicinals here and there, you are sure to visit and tell her the latest town gossip. She won’t expect less, having chosen the most fertile spot to be buried for her—now your—witch pickings.
Smart woman. Odd, but smart.
“Don’t you go forgetting about me, now,” her voice echoes from days past, playful but a lingering exhaustion had crept further into it. “I’ll be watching over ya, even when you think you got nothing but yourself. I’ll be there, bug.”
You hum, refusing to cry anymore today. Your throat is still raw from screaming your heart out. Who could forget about you, Granny?
You push off your knees, stretching onto your feet. A sigh billows out into the frigid air. It’s the harshest winter, nothing like those in the last decade and a half. You’ve been snowed-in twice this month and the season feels never ending. It’s a sign to rest, but rest anymore and you’ll fade away.
Hearing a familiar twitter, you glance up at the powdered branches overhead. A ruby red cardinal watches you from above, beady eyes sharp in its regard. You recognize him from the tuft around his bill—the rascal of the college, Beaker.
You call up to him, voice softer than the fresh fallen snow at your feet. “Watch over her for me, won’t you?”
He tweets, ruffling his feathers as he nestles down into the coated branch. A little watchman in the making. You’ll feed him when he visits again. Speaking of...
I’ve got to fill those fae feeders. You’re sure the little fairies are bound to be grumpy at your prolonged delay. It has been nearly two weeks since the last refill. With all the snowfall, you can barely make it to town let alone to the outer forests of Greenwood.
Not to mention all the warnings from the rabbits before they’d gone into hibernation, rarely popping up with hunting season on the rise. Your own little familiar keeps to her cot by the fire, too deprived of energy from her extra feedings. You miss the sound of  her thumps when she follows along beside you, but it’s too dangerous for her to be out here now.
Without the company, you’re prone to noticing more shadows creeping with the lack of sun. Granny’s old protection charms only reach so far and you’re still studying a good way to renew them.
You haven’t thought too much of it until you were met with a freshly bloomed rhododendron on a frozen winter morning. It seems even the fae are worrying about you.
“Be a good time for Gray to carry her weight, huh, Granny?” you call in farewell, keeping an eye over your shoulder without your familiar. A cold breeze has you throwing your fur-lined hood up. “Need all the help I can get.”
You’re beginning to think the universe has something against you and permanent company. Your fluffle of rabbits are great to have every other season. It’s still terribly lonely now in the cottage, even with Gray’s soft presence.
Granny’s familiar, a prized cardinal that was much too saturated to be a normal bird, had died with her as is the way of the sacred connection. The flock that hung around still dropped by from time to time, Beaker more than most.
They deliver seeds and a variety of ingredients that are a bit difficult to find with human eyes every so often. You continue to supply them, too, for all of their hard work and care.
Coming upon the first fae feeder, you sigh at rotten acorns piled atop small treasures. It’s a surprise they hadn’t taken the gifts back at this point.
“I apologize for the tardiness,” you say into the wind, filling the wooden tube with their favorite treats, “winter has been unkind… Granny has gone.”
You sigh, topping off the carrier with a large pear—a fan favorite.
“I’ll be here to take her place for first aid now, if any of you really need it,” you continue, checking your footsteps behind you in the snow. None had been erased or swiped through. Safe to follow them back, then. “As always, I appreciate the gifts you’ve left behind.”
You know better than to say “thank you” after almost being spirited away one summer in your toddler years. Granny had torn that fae a new one or so you’d heard through the muffled barrier of her hands. She had known their tricks, through and through, and made sure you did as well after that.
“I’ll do my best to keep filling these every week,” you announce. Whispers whistle through the trees and you hum. “Something to keep me busy.”
Picking the shiny baubles from the rotten acorns, you shock at the sight of crystal. That’s new. Taking a moment to recall your lessons, nothing comes to mind about quartz as a gift. It’s utilized for energy and protection.
Shrugging, you pocket the offerings and move on to the next feeder. The trail that is worn into the dirt is covered by heaps of snow now, so you keep to the treeline to move into the next acre.
You’re filling the third and final feeder when something sweeps over you. The disturbance is strong, ushering you to tread further into the forest without hesitation. You check the skies as you go, worried about the time. The sun is already hidden by the clouds. If you stay past sundown you’ll be in for a world of trouble.
Uttering a quick prayer for safety, you hurry deeper into the trees, following the invisible line tugging at your psyche. You watch for any sudden movements.
Pausing near a meadow, you listen. Leaves rustle with an icy breeze, a clump of snow slipping from branches not far off. There. A high pitched cry tears through your heartstrings, sending your head whipping south as you take off in the same direction. Your ankles sink deep, snow slowing your descent as you stumble down a short hill.
Practically tripping onto level ground, you spin in circles trying to find the source of the wail. You manage to spot a wriggling form in the air a few yards away. The vibrant green throws you for a loop, having not seen such a shade since the peak of spring.
It’s a rabbit by the looks of it, strung up by a hunter’s snare. Villagers should have known better than to set up traps this close to your cabin—it’s forbidden. The suffering of animals rebound throughout the forest and anger the fae. You’re fine with quick deaths, hell you have to hunt and gather yourself, too, but not traps. Never traps. The cruelty sickens you.
You croon as you approach, scaring the creature half to death as it thrashes. The movement rips another cry from its throat, sending your ears ringing from the frequency. It must have hurt its foot on the way up.
“It’s all right,” you hush, setting your basket down. Throwing your hood back from over your head, you observe the snare before reaching out to stop the poor thing from spinning itself sick. It seems to calm down once you take the weight off its injured foot, muttering a spell under your breath to ease the pain a bit.
Round eyes peer up at you as you finish, ears straight in attention. It’s a rather big rabbit, much larger than your Gray, but not so big that you can’t hold it in your arms. It could fit in your basket, but it would be a little constraining.
“There we go,” you sigh as the spell takes on its full effect. “Much calmer now, huh? Let me cut you down and we’ll wrap up that foot of yours.” You cradle the rabbit gently in the crook of one arm while fumbling for your blade at your hip.
Once unsheathed, you feel the animal tense in your embrace and smile to yourself. High intelligence. Maybe it’s a pet? you think before going to cut at the rope holding it hostage. You pause when it glints in the lowlight.
It’s not rope, it's a silver-lined string.
“What the hell?” you whisper, bringing your blade to it. The string snaps with two passovers. You study the thin silver as it unravels from the rabbit’s foot and gasp as it begins to smoke. You throw it away only to watch it burst into black mist. The rest that had been hanging above has done the same.
This isn’t the work of average hunters, you realize before zoning in on the weight in your arms.
“You’re docile,” you comment, having expected the rabbit to jump as soon as it saw fit. “Were you someone’s before you got trapped? You’re a pretty thing.”
The bunny remains silent, twitching its button nose up at you. You don’t complain. It saves you the trouble of casting another soothing spell on it.
“Well, let’s see,” you glance at its lower half, humming as you sheathe your knife and check for a gender with careful fingers. The rabbit’s ears perk up, its good leg kicking out as it twists away. You laugh.
“Alright, alright! I want to say you’re a girl since you're on the bigger side, but there’s no dewlap, and I don’t feel any mammary glands...hmm. Guess we’ll go with male.”
You shift your focus to his injury, clicking your tongue. It’s a nasty break, most likely needs a splint to heal correctly.
“You’ll have to come with me. It’s a bad break you have here,” you explain as he stares up at you. He startles suddenly after, ears bolting back. “Tell you what, if you let me wrap you up at home, I’ll let you go as soon as you can hop on your own.”
His ears go limp. If he were able to understand, you’d think him unimpressed by the idea.
Laughing to yourself, you shake your head. “Well, I could always leave you out here. It’s getting dark soon, so I hope your burrow is nearby.”
You relax your arms, bending down to give him the chance to make a run for it or even just escape your embrace. He does neither. He might’ve even moved deeper into your chest.
“It’ll be nice to have some new company,” you aver, careful to not jostle him as you follow your footprints back the way you came. “A few days and some magic to speed things up, and you’ll be good as new.”
And then you’ll be back to a lonely little cottage with a sleepy rabbit and healing heart.
You gaze down as the creature in your arms twitches, nodding off slowly but surely.
At least I have something to occupy me for now.
🌿🌿🌿
Warmth fills Izuku’s senses, enveloping him in a thick layer of comfort. He recognizes the crisp smell of a fire, long ears quivering at crackling wood, but there is no fresh soil melding with it.
Blinking his eyes open, he’s stumped by the lack of the burrow around him. Is he in a cabin? Fae don’t build cabins.
Glancing around, he finds himself huddled in a nest of blankets alongside a fireplace. The inside of the home is one he’d never seen, but the scent is vaguely familiar.
On the edge of the warming fire, a small rabbit watches him, chewing away at a miniature pile of hay. It’s content enough with its man-made surroundings. The owner must care for it a great deal.
When had he arrived here? Could this be the old witch’s house? The variety of herbs he smells makes sense.
His racing thoughts lull when he spots you entering the room. You carry a small plate covered in various vegetables and something else just out of view. His nose twitches, stomach rumbling. How long was he out for? He couldn’t remember when he’d blacked out. The last thing he does remember is your soft embrace pulling him away from that violent snare.
The memory has him turning his head to check his hind leg. It’s neatly wrapped in a fine cloth, supported with a small, wooden splint. He must’ve been exhausted—there hadn’t been any pain to rouse him.
He’s beyond thankful, having reached his limit for agony today. Or was that yesterday?
Mom’s going to be hysterical. His ears perk up. Gods, there she is.
He’s never seen you so close. You walk towards him with a plate, dressed differently from when he’d last seen you. The nightgown looks smooth to the touch.
“Finally awake?” you ask. “Been a few hours. You must be starving.”
You set the plate in front of him. Sliced veggies, even some hay to the side. He watches you carefully before lowering his head to the food to dig in.
“Good. You have an appetite.” The relief in your voice has his heart skipping a beat. How are you so kind? “You’ll be healed in no time,” you declare, leaving him to his supper.
Even in your care, his skittish nature won’t allow him a moment’s peace. The grandmother he is somewhat acquainted with— having seen her countless times in the forest and during that one, embarrassing incident—has already proven to be just as compassionate as you, her granddaughter. She often recognized him for his color, tossing him a treat or two if she had any on her. “Green bean” had always been said fondly, though he didn’t have a particular affinity for it.
It was years ago that she introduced you. He’d been hiding in the forestry at the time as his mother had taught him, but some of the other fae residents had stood around, curious of the new witch being brought up by the old maid. You were always quiet, resigned.
He thought (and still believes) you were the most beautiful thing to ever exist.
But fae have rules. No revealing themselves unless they are called upon or when bringing a deal to fruition. He never wants to get you mixed up in petty tricks, even if he knows you’d never call. So he had become satiated with watching you from afar. The way you interact with the forest and its beings is always a delight to behold. The fairies adore you, happy with the food and care you provide. He’ll sneak some treats from those feeders when he’s nearby, but rarely so. When he does, he always makes sure to leave something behind, of course, you deserve more than he could ever offer.
(Had he’d hoped you would make the mistake and say “thank you” again? Yes. Did he also just want to give you something nice? Also yes.)
And now here you are, all attention centered on him. He has never been so glad to be caught in a trap, or break a leg. Gods above, he’s broken them plenty in his younger years.
“I hope you’re not in any pain,” you murmur, checking his bandages once he’s finished eating. He jumps at every graze of your fingers, grateful that his animal form hides his reddening face. “Any discomfort?”
He shakes his head.
“Good, with that one spell, I would hope so—”
You pause, staring blankly down at him. He tilts his head in question.
“Did…” You purse your lips, brow furrowing. “Did you just shake your head no?”
His fur stands on end, shocked by his own stupidity. Well, he hurries to rationalize, ears flattening, the rules clearly say not to reveal ourselves. I haven’t shown my true form and I haven’t spoken either!
Fae are all about the finer details in a contract, taking delight in a loophole every now and again. Luckily, he is rather good at finding them.
With bated breath, he nods his head up at you.
“You—you can understand me?” He nods. Your hands cup your face in terror. “Oh, Gods, you must be fae! I’m sorry I didn’t find you sooner!”
He shakes his head violently, ears flapping.
No, no! Don’t blame yourself! It’s my fault I fell into such an obvious trap!
It really is—it definitely is. If he hadn’t been so distracted by dropping off a gift at one of the feeders, he wouldn’t have been rushing home in fear of being late for dinner. Couldn’t say he regretted it now, though.
Your hands hide any mortification from the disguised fae. You want to scream at the fact you’d tried to find the gender—how rude. Gods, what if they’re non-binary? A lot of fae don’t like to be gender labeled. You want to die.
“I’ll make it up to you. It will be a quick recovery,” you swear.
Hopefully not too quickly, Izuku finds himself thinking, displeased with himself only after the fact. His poor mother is probably in a pool of tears, up in arms. He’ll have to send her a message soon.
“If you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to ask,” you say as you get to your feet. “Can't be a bad host and risk being spirited away now can I?”
If only you knew how close he’d been to doing it, but he’d never forgive himself if he did. Stealing you away isn’t his dream so much as it is stealing your affections. Taking something so precious, though, would mean you’d given something up or offered it to begin with, which you hadn’t. No deal could be made.
Wait. His ears go ramrod straight. She did me a favor—therefore, I must return it. If his leg wasn’t broken, he’d have sprung off the floor in joy.
Just as you are turning to head into the kitchen, a wind sweeps throughout the house, sending your hair scattering in all directions. Doing your best to tame the strands, you spin around to find the source, likely an open window or cracked door. Instead, you find a starry face beaming up at you.
In the background, Gray continues to chew her hay at a sleepy pace.
“Thank you for saving me,” the man says, green hair and with the same colored rabbit ears emerging very familiar as well as those sparkling eyes. “I’m Izuku Midoriya and I‘d like to grant you a favor in return.”
“W-what?” you squeak, a hot flash overwhelming over you at the sight of a shirtless man at your feet. Thank the heavens he’s twisted the blankets around his lower half or you’d have fainted from beholding all of his beauty at once.
Roving your eyes away from his chiseled pecs and the mesmerizing constellations across his skin, you sputter out, “A favor? I-I didn’t ask for a favor!”
“You helped me,” he chirps, face far too sweet to be one of those meddling fae and far too innocent when he is stark naked in front of you, “therefore I can reveal myself to you and offer a favor in return.”
“C-can I politely decline?”
The pout on his lips leaves guilt to crash through your rib cage. “I thought you—didn’t you say you wanted to heal me?”
“Of course I do!” He’d been too cute to suffer and now he’s too enchanting to leave half-treated. “But not at the cost of freedom or my name or whatever your people usually want these days.”
He blinks, tilting his head just as he had done in his animal form. His ears droop. You have the urge to scream again as you set your sights on the ground. Idly, you wonder if sirens are nearly as hypnotic.
“Did you not hear what I, uh, said before? In return for saving my life, I wanted to give you a favor in return. I-it can be anything you want, no strings attached!”
“But, uh,” you fumble, all your lessons coming up blank, “ there’s always a catch to these sorts of things…?”
Why can’t you think of one? Granny had prepared you for skits like this and here you are, heart cartwheeling over the stunningness of fae physique.
“No catch. I swear on my oath as a fae.”
This time you have to meet his stare, purely in shock. Fae don’t just pull these types of stunts. Is he new to this?
“Um, how...old are you? If you don’t mind me asking.”
He hums, chin raising as his eyes flee to the corners in thought. You watch the way his freckles dance across his cheeks, some shooting across like falling stars. You wonder if they would move with your fingers trailing across his skin. Would they follow the touch or trickle away?
“Maybe, a year or two older than you? We don’t keep track with years like your kind do since we live so long,” he explains, viridian eyes piercing in your enthralled state. “How come?”
“I just...traditional fae don’t usually…” You aren’t sure how to phrase this strange turn of events.
“I’m sorry if I’m overwhelming you!” He leans forward, wincing as he does. “It’s just...well, I was hoping I’d get a chance to speak with you one day! I’m glad I was able to find a loophole.”
What in the world? Speak with you? Loophole? ‘Overwhelmed’ is putting it lightly.
“So, a favor?” you reiterate.
He nods, expression determined. “Anything you want! Obviously, it has to be within my range of magic, but I'm sure you know the limits of fae being a green witch.”
You nod before catching the mistake and shaking your head, waving a hand as an afterthought. “Oh, no I'm not a green witch. That was Granny.”
“Oh, I see! Sorry for assuming.” He flushes a soft pink. Your heart throbs as you clear your throat. “Could I ask what your element is, then?”
“Well, uh, is that safe? I mean, you steal names and stuff.”
He laughs, his smile much too bright in the dimly lit room. “You’re cautious, huh? Oh, d-don’t worry. That’s, uh, that’s a good thing! But you should know you’re a favorite among the Greenwood fae and the majority of us would rather, you know, help. With how kind you are. A-and your grandmother, of course! Both of you, I mean.”
He is a stuttering mess. You want to squeeze him, he’s so cute.
“Oh,” you breathe, realization crowding in.
All those natural warnings make a lot more sense now. As well as the bountiful harvests even when your plant spells are mediocre at best. You assume setting out offerings on special holidays and leaving those feeders around gives you brownie points. Who knew it could do that and more?
“Well, thank you, I guess,” you mumble. A gasp about rips your lungs in half as the words sink in. “I mean—!”
You slam your hands over your mouth in fear, but Izuku only falls into a soft fit of chuckles.
“I promise,” he says, “ you're safe to speak your mind with me. I won’t ask for anything other than your company. And your favor, of course! When you think of one.”
“Okay, then,” you murmur, still suspicious but willing to compromise. “Well, to answer your question, my talent is related to the moon and stars. An astrology witch of sorts, I guess.”
He chokes in amazement, sending butterflies to flourish in your stomach as he beams.
“That means you can read fate!”
“I’m still learning, but yeah.”
You try not to do it often, not since…
You cough, clearing your throat as you grin through the rising pain in your chest. “It’s nice to meet you, you can call me whatever you wish.”
His eyes squint, a nervous smile on his lips as he scratches at the back of his head. “Still cautious, I see.”
“Names are powerful things, Izuku Midoriya.”
He shivers at the full pronunciation of his name, pink blooming into a hot red.
“Sure are,” he whispers, eyes intent on his fumbling fingers. The blanket he’d wrapped himself in has beautiful embroidery work, most of it rabbits of varying colors. The irony makes him grin.
“Clothes!” you squeak, scrambling around before making your way to the back rooms. Izuku ears jump as you disappear through a doorway, his shoulders tensing when you peak out again.
“S-sorry, forgot to ask, but uh—what pronouns do you go by? I’m really sorry about trying to find your gender earlier, that was so rude of me!”
“O-oh!” Izuku is grateful you asked, but the reminder of your fingers in his fur has him looking away in a hurry. “Male! Male pronouns are good. Thank you f-for asking.”
You nod, once again vanishing into the room. He can hear you rummaging around and takes in your abode as he waits.
Twisting in his seat, he hisses as something jabs him and slips a hand under his covering to find the source. Pulling out the miniature splint you'd made for his rabbit form, he smiles softly and sets it aside.
“Here, these are the only clothes I could find. They belong to an old friend of Granny's. I’m sorry. I can get you something else when I go into town tomorrow.”
Looking up at you, he flaps a hand in front of his face. “Don’t worry! I’ll be fine with whatever.”
The long night shirt is sure to fit him and while the cotton shorts are somewhat loose, they aren’t uncomfortable. They have to sit low on his hips, though, considering he has a tail and all.
As he changes, you’d fiddle away in the kitchen. Washing up by the sounds of it. “Would you like some cocoa?”
“That’s a drink, right?” he asks, trying to remember. There are so many beverages and foods when it comes to humans. The fae are known for their own recipes as well. Cocoa isn’t one of them.
“Yes, it’s milk-based, very rich and sweet. Do you want one?”
“Sure! That would be great.”
He is always excited to try new things. Maybe he can write down the ingredients and let his mother try to recreate some if it proves to be delicious.
He pales, head sweeping the room for something to write with. I forgot to message her!
“Sorry to bother you, but do you have any paper and a pen?”
“Yeah! Hold on, let me leave this to warm… Okay,” you breathe, crossing the room and heading to a cabinet. Soon you’ve procured what he asked for, passing it to him.
“Thank you.”
He quickly begins his letter, missing the look of surprise you give him at his words. He keeps his message short and to the point. When he’s finished, he turns, grunting as he pushes up onto his good leg.
“W-wait!” you cry, rushing forward to help. The warmth of your hands on him leaves him stumbling more into you then he meant to. The two of you gaze at one another, equally flustered by the close distance.
“Sorry, I just need to get to the window. I need to deliver this to my mother or she’ll worry herself sick.”
You nod, sticking to his side and acting as his crutch. Leading him to the closest window, you lift a latch and push it open. The chill of winter seeps through, causing the two of you to shiver.
“How are you going to deliver it, though?” you ask, breath visible. “I don’t have any messenger pigeons or anything.”
“We fae are very persuasive with woodland creatures,” he laughs and sighs at the familiar scent of the forest air.
Whistling to the winter breeze, you both wait in silence. You leave his side as something catches your attention in the kitchen, probably the cocoa, and warn him to keep the weight off his bad leg.
By the time you return, he is already passing the folded paper to an owl’s claws, muttering in a language you don’t know, accent sharp. He catches you staring and smiles.
“Cocoa’s done,” you say, shyly. “Here, let’s get you to a chair. I don’t want you standing for long.”
“As you wish, elenya.”
There is that accent again. You purse your lips. “Is that what you’re gonna call me?”
He nods, eyes evasive as you help him towards the living room once more.
“What’s it mean?”
He chuckles, wincing as you help him into the chair. “Will that be your favor?”
“To know my nickname?” you laugh. “At least assure me it’s nice and not teasing me in any way.”
“I promise. It’s a name that fits you.”
You hum curiously, grinning as you leave and return with a steaming mug. He accepts it from you, careful as he handles the sides. It smells delicious.
“I have a question, if you don’t mind,” you start after a few minutes have gone by in comfortable silence.
“I don’t mind,” he nods to you, “go ahead.”
“Well, if you’re fae, why didn’t you just shift to get out of the trap?” You draw something against the surface of the table, eyes sticking to it. “I mean, wouldn't that have been easier?”
“The rope was laced with silver,” he murmurs, taking another sip of the warm beverage.
“I had wondered about that…” You drift off, gaze hardening as you scowl. “They were trying to catch you.”
He ducks his head. “I have lived in those woods a long time and made a few deals with villagers nearby—some of them didn’t end well in their favor, but not because of me.”
He shrugs, letting out a deep breath. “I’m not fond of spiriting away kids or the like, so that leaves wishes and, well, their greed gets the best of them, I suppose.”
“I see.” You finish your drink and sniff. “I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
He thanks you again, glancing up as you rise with your cup in hand. As you retreat to the kitchen he focuses on finishing his drink, marveling at your home again as he does. It really is quite cozy.
“You know, I didn’t realize fae had animal features,” you call, water splashing in the background.
“We can cast a glamor, but I wasn’t really thinking,” he excuses, taking one last sip. “If it makes you uncomfortable, I can hide them.”
“No, they’re lovely!” You appear to take his cup, grinning down at him. “I'm terribly fond of rabbits if you couldn’t tell by her.”
You nod to the hefty ashen rabbit asleep by the fire. “That’s Grey over there napping, my familiar.”
“She seems very happy here. Beautiful fur,” he says.
“Not as beautiful as yours.” He grows unimaginably flustered as you stumble over your words. “I mean—well, you have a very cute rabbit form, so!”
He tries not to laugh as you shuffle away, your embarrassment palpable. And you think he’s the adorable one.
“How long before I can walk, do you think?” he asks, shifting in his seat. From what he can tell the bone has already been set and besides a slight ache, he is almost positive he could walk again if he wanted.
“Well, usually I would say a day, but you took well to my granny’s healing spell. It must be by your own magic, I guess.” You return to him, kneeling and reaching for his injured leg. “May I?”
Heart fluttering, he consents and holds his breath as your palms meet his calf. You are careful as you check him over, asking him how it feels when you do this or that. It’s definitely sore, but that was about it.
“Well, you might be good enough to walk now. I’d give it the rest of the night just to be sure, though,” you decide, hands retreating. He already mourns their warmth. “You can have my bed. I haven’t cleaned Granny’s quite yet.”
“She only passed yesterday, did she not?”
You duck your head, rising to your feet with a sorrowful smile. “Yes, but we were both prepared. It was a long time coming.”
He frowns at your dismissal, reaching out to your hand to brush his knuckles against your own.
“That doesn’t mean it hurts any less.”
Your bottom lip trembles, but you are quick to clear your throat and step away from him. “I’ll go get my bed ready for you—”
“Please, I don’t want to take it,” he argues softly, “I’ll be fine where I was in my animal form. That blanket’s comfortable next to the fire.”
“No, that would be so rude of me to just leave you out here with Grey.” You set your eyes on him. “You’re taking my bed, Midoriya, that’s final.”
“How about a compromise?” he asks. “I’ll sleep in my rabbit form so t-there’s room for you as well.”
“Together, you mean?”
“It’s that or I’ll, uh, refuse it all together.”
“Oh, you’re a fae alright,” you chuckle, clearly flustered. “Very sneaky of you to share a bed with an unmarried maiden.”
“T-that’s not what I mean at all!” he squeaks, growing red all the way down his neck.
You burst into giggles, the tables efficiently turned. Although you’ll never admit it, you would be happy to share a bed with him. One too many nights keep you awake, wishing for something to hold besides a cold pillow. Grey hates being that high off the ground. Of course, you’re not holding Izuku. That’d be inappropriate.
You give him your comfiest pillow to lay on at the end of the bed, smiling at his balled up form as his ears smooth over his back. His eyes are already closed, dozing away as you finish locking up the house and checking on the protection charms. After that, you settle under your covers, smiling as Izuku shifts his head atop his paws. He really is too cute for his own good.
Exhaling a deep breath, you pull your quilts up over you and attempt to drift off.
It proves to be an impossible task. At first, you merely wonder about the favor you can ask of Midoriya and what you even want when it really comes down to it. Granny pops up before you can think of anything else, but you know better. Magic can’t cheat death, not without a heavy price to pay, and fae usually don’t deal in necromancy.
You miss her terribly. It hasn’t been more than a day and you already feel so alone in this cottage. What will you do without her? All of her teachings? Her spellbook can only do so much and the darkness seems to be growing darker yet in the outer woods. Did Midoriya know anything about that? Did it have anything to do with the silver snare?
Oh, Granny. I’m so scared. Your eyelids strain as your eyes burn behind them. Why did you have to leave?
Feeling a weight behind you, you sniff and turn, only slightly shocked when you come face to face with your houseguest.
“I’m sorry, I heard you crying,” he whispers, nose almost touching yours. “Please, is there anything I can do? I hate to see you this way.”
“No, no, I’m sorry. I just…” you say it quickly, wiping at your eyes. When your focus meets his, you let your wondering voice itself. “Why does it hurt you? We barely know each other.”
He watches you, eyes yearning.
“Don’t we?” you ask, unsure.
“The truth is, I’ve known about you for quite some time now,” he admits lowly, and you could have sworn one of his freckles sparkle as it drifts across his cheek. “You have such a kind heart and pure intentions towards Greenwood, and you’re, uh, very pretty.”
For some reason, more tears stream down your face at his confession. You close your eyes to put a stop to them, but he is already brushing them away with his thumb, face ever so slightly closer to yours.
“Please, elenya, tell me what I can do to help.”
He’s a fae, the very thing your Granny always warned you about, but you want to trust him. You want to trust that Izuku has a good heart.
“I’m so scared now that she’s gone,” you confess, gasping quietly as you hold back your sorrow. “I’m all alone.”
A sob slips free and his thumb is traded for his palm. He cups your face gently.
“I don’t want to be alone.”
“You’re not, elenya. You have so many that care for you and even if you didn’t, I’d make sure you weren’t,” he whispers.
You sniff, cringing at the volume of it. “With my favor, you mean?”
“If you’d like, but, really…” You can see his blush even in the dim light of the moon through your window. “I don’t think I can stay away long after you send me off tomorrow. I like your company too much now that I’ve experienced it.”
A smile tugs at your lips. “I like your company, too, Izuku.”
He giggles abruptly, fully flushing at the sound to which you laugh. The two of you fall into mirth as the tears subsided for small, simmering joy.
“Do you feel any better?” he asks.
“Yes,” you nod, clasping at the covers. “I do.”
“Is there anything else I can do? I promise there’s no price.”
You shuffle your feet under the covers a bit, eyeing his beautiful freckles.
“H-hold me?”
His eyes tick wider, but before you can take it back you hear him shift and watch as he inches closer, his arm slithering around your waist. You sigh into his embrace, melting in his warmth. He smells like rain and something floral. You hum in content, resting your forehead against his chest.
“You smell good.”
He chuckles, holding you tighter. “Not as good as you, elenya.”
You peer up at him, smiling. “Seriously, what does that mean?”
“Hmm, you have something to trade for that information?” he teases, surprised when you consider it. “I was just joking—!”
“Wait, let me think,” you shush, eyes closing. “I’m trying to think of what you’d want.”
“Don’t ask what I want.” You freeze, opening your eyes to find his own dark and focused wholly on your face. “I want too much, especially of you.”
“Of me?” you echo, breath catching as his nose brushes yours.
“Of you,” he says.
You swallow, eyelids fluttering. You can feel his breath against your lips. It smells sweet, the faintest scent of the cocoa you’d shared.
“Fae love firsts don’t they?” He hums, seemingly lost in thought as his eyes sink lower on your face. You can barely find your voice with him so close. “First names...first child…”
You hesitate as he holds you even tighter. His eyes are burning into yours again.
“Would my first kiss suffice?” you ask.
“I’d take your second,” his mouth skims yours, a hair’s width away, “as long as my lips are the last you’d ever kiss.”
If you weren’t so brain fried, you might be afraid. Never be able to kiss someone else? What if you fell in love tomorrow?
No, you think. How could I? You’re already more than smitten tonight. What terrible timing.
“You said you’d trade,” you remind him gently, “I offer you my first kiss, Izuku.”
He sighs, one of his hands splaying across your back and pulling you impossibly closer as if you might merge into one. You bite back a whimper as his lips skim your cheek and stop at your ear.
“I accept,” he whispers. His mouth falls over yours shortly after.
You gasp at the soft touch, his lips are warm then wet as his tongue trails across your bottom lip and dips into your mouth. The way it moves tickles at first, skimming the back of your teeth before meeting yours. After that, your mind softens, caught up in the way the muscle twists and his teeth nip when you need a breath of air.
You nearly forget what you traded your kiss for, his hand tangling in your hair while his other caresses the bare flesh of your waist. Your nightgown had ridden up at some point. You’re too caught up in a lusty haze to care that your cotton briefs are the only thing separating Izuku from your most intimate parts.
Only when he has pulled away, watching you catch your breath, do you remember what you’d wanted in the first place.
“S-so,” you pant, “what does elenya mean?”
“My star,” he answers instantly, the heat of his palm trailing higher and leaving your heart to pulse among other parts. “It means ‘my star’ in the fae language.”
“Why star?” He rubs his nose against yours as you giggle. “Because I can read fate?”
“Because you shine,” he murmurs, words shaking, “and you don’t even realize how much.”
It’s so painfully honest coming from him that you almost believe it. Why he means it or says it to you of all people perplexes you beyond anything else. You don’t feel like someone who’d catch a fae’s eye or be adored by them simply for doing good deeds. It feels too lovely to be true.
“What’re you thinking about?” His warm hand smoothes across your waist never rising and never falling. You find you wouldn’t mind if it wandered.
“Why you want so much of me, yet haven’t tricked me to get it.” You know he has mischief in him. It slips out in small ways, glinting in his eyes when he phrases certain words. He has the ability to fool you over, but hasn’t.
“I’m not forceful like the others. Tricking someone into getting something has never felt right to me. Fair deals and simple terms are better. Easier.”
“Yet, there are still people hunting you.”
“Fae are powerful,” he admits. “We have many uses in just one strand of hair, if you know how to use it. I could always have deals that ended well and still be their target—it’s the way of life here.”
“Not here,” you say, a quivering hand coming up to smooth the bangs framing his face back. “Not in my woods.”
“Your woods, huh?” he attempts to tease, but you remain serious.
“That trap was nowhere near the boundary I made against poachers from the village. They know not to hunt there and if they do, it’s quick, painless deaths. Something’s going on.”
Izuku hums, you pull your hand away from his hair.
“Do you know something I don’t?”
“The fae are handling it. You shouldn’t have to worry about these things,” he says in a tone you feel doesn’t fit him. “There’s a reason we leave you warnings. You must heed them, especially now.”
“What’s going on, Izuku? Please, maybe I can help—”
“We won’t accept it.” His eyes glint in the moonlight as he stares into you. “This is something beyond your kind and you’ve been through enough, elenya.”
“I’m not some fragile damsel, you know,” you huff, pulling away as anger nips in your chest.
“I know that.” He doesn’t force you to stay in his arms, but his hands to find yours, holding them tightly. “I just don’t want to see you hurt. Your grandmother asked us to keep an eye on you before she passed on.”
“She what?”
“It was the least we could do with how much she’s helped us over the years—”
“Izuku, this is too much,” you sigh, shaking his hands away. “I need to sleep.”
His eyes glimmer in a way that nearly rips you asunder. He’s too beautiful to be sad, but you are tired and you don’t want to think of your grandmother anymore tonight.
“You’re right,” he says. “Sweet dreams. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Before you can think to say anything else, he’s a rabbit again, hopping to the end of the bed and curling up in the same spot he’d been in at the start.
You refuse to let the guilt build as you turn your back to him. Sleep comes eventually. When it does, it’s dreamless.
