It's always bothered me how cis women are basically treated as biologically pre-determined allies to trans people because many of the cis women in my life have been the LEAST supportive while acting like their bigotry is better than cis men's because "women are naturally caring". Combine that with the idea that it's trans people's role to comfort and accommodate cis women's sense of safety at the cost of our own makes it even more upsetting to me. Meanwhile cis men in my life have all gone out of their way to challenge bigoted views in the people around them, burnt bridges with people they've known for ages because they care about me and my safety as a trans person more than being friends with bigots.

When I tell people that they'll often say that these men aren't the norm because ''they chose to do it individually'' and like??? Yeah that's what you do???? Are people so brainrotted by the concept of goodness being some innate trait you either have or don't have and have no way of changing that they're fine with disrespecting themselves and their fellow queers and accept this as the only way for us to live??

All that tells me is that people believe our existence as trans people is so fundamentally meaningless thay they look down on those of us who dare to demand better. And at this point I don't care if I sound mean about it, I genuinely think we as a demographic need to grow a collective spine and stop idolizing cis women and let cis men off the hook by waving them off as lost causes.

Obsessed with the idea of a lowkey unethical scientist Wakaba who experimented on Akechi and the complicated feelings generated from this within Futaba and Akechi.

Akechi and Wakaba's relationship was surprisingly cordial. If anything, he quite liked her because she was the smartest of the bunch and also the nicest to him. I mean, he still killed her, but. You know. She would talk about her young daughter and about Featherman, knowing that he's a fan of the show. She would ask how he felt after the experiments and gave him more grace than the others when he couldn't generate the result they were hoping for. (This is both because she's kinder and because she doesn't mind not "getting results." As far as she's concerned, any data is "results.") And yet.

And yet she didn't stop doing horrible experiments on him. Akechi was a child-shaped resource to her. Like a video game child, where you want to be nicer because it's cute and it looks like the real thing, but when it comes down to it, it's not really a person. She won't push as much as the others, and she always asks if he's okay. But, well, that's not her child. So if he says it's fine and the experiment isn't compromised, then who is she to doubt him? Isn't the knowledge obtained through these experiments more precious than the feelings of a teen she barely knew, and who insisted he was fine anyway? Yes, a palace collapsing kills the people inside (they made sure that to double check). Yes, this kid can cause psychotic breakdowns (it proved her hypothesis right). Yes, killing a shadow kills the person. But can't you see? This is all in the name of science. It's bigger than her or him or all of them.

Akechi's feelings about her flip-flops a lot depending on his mental state. Sometimes, he tries to justify killing her because she deserves it for what she did to him (the others wanted to do worse before she stopped them), it was her own fault for researching something so dangerous without knowing how to protect herself (how could she have predicted her team turning on her?) and he was just following orders anyway (a lot of corrupt adults are also "just following orders"), but more often, he settles on her being innocent. Since it was his decision to participate in the experiments, he needs to shoulder all the responsibility for his own pain. It was his choice, because he was obviously in control this whole time. He's a free agent. He's manipulating the adults here, don't you see? He wasn't a child anymore.

When Futaba learned about her human experiments, especially the ones on Akechi, she was shocked and horrified. "My mom was a fucking monster!" And Akechi is like, "Yeah the experiments sucked but I consented to everything." "You were 14-15???" And for a long time she is unable to really reconcile the image of her workaholic but loving mother with an obsessive scientist willing to turn a blind eye to the ethically bankrupt act of using a teen as a brain magic lab rat.

Idk, I just thought it would be funny and depressing if Futaba started thinking her mother was a horrible monster while Akechi has to defend Wakaba cause the truth is that she was kind of horrible but also like, a person. She was Futaba's loving mother, Sojiro's best friend, and an advocate for women in STEM. To her experiment subjects (because Akechi wasn't the only one, let's be real), she was a demon, but to other, she was a genuinely good person. Morally grey Wakaba Isshiki my beloved.

Wanted to add my two cents to the discussions about being more radical in label use and application vs keeping the definitions tighter and more niche.

I think for me, it boils down to this. Using labels broadly, for things they weren’t originally inclusive of, makes it more difficult to find others with a similar experience to yourself. I’m seeing this discussion mostly in therian/otherkin spaces currently, especially relating to voluntary identities. I wanted to give a fictionkin perspective on it since 2020-2021 was a very tough time in that community with KFF.

I don’t think KFF as a concept is bad. If someone wants to voluntarily take on an identity for fun, then by all means enjoy it! However. Since they still broadly used the term “fictionkin,” it made it a lot harder to track down spaces where I was actually welcome and fit in. I sort of closed myself off for those few years, keeping just to friend groups I already trusted. Whenever I tried to join a bigger space or discussion, I’d get hit with the “but you know you aren’t actually X right?” or “fictionkin don’t actually have memories because they’re just doing it for fun.” Yeah spiritual fictionfolk like myself still fit under most definitions of “kin,” but it felt like those using the terminology more broadly didn’t understand my experiences at ALL. That’s why terms like fictionfolk have grown in popularity - a direct reaction to the word “kin” being inclusive of for-fun and voluntary identities to the degree of misuse and removing the original community members.

I’m not here to be the vocabulary police or the therian police by any means. Voluntary or involuntary, do what you want with labels. I just wanted to share why some folks with involuntary identities are being reactionary toward this subject. There’s always going to be the fear of being unable to find folks like oneself when the general usage of community terminology grows broader. Sure, you can always clarify “involuntary identities” if you’re seeking that, and that should be okay. It’s not bad to want to find others who have been through the exact same as you. It’s not exclusionary to do so. Some of the struggles that come with an involuntary identity are different than the struggles with a voluntary identity. They both have their ups and downs and a lot of shared experiences, but they do have a set of differences too!

I’m sort of rambling at this point, but I think if the community at large is willing to open terms like therian/otherkin to include voluntary identification, then it should also be acceptable to specify that one is an involuntary/etc. therian or otherkin for the sake of finding more niche community spaces where they can relate to others more closely. And if you have a voluntary identity, it’s always good to assess why you feel the label therian/otherkin is more appropriate to describe your experience than another term. (Otherlink/copinglink spaces are very bare bones even today so I totally get that those aren’t people’s top pick. They’ve never been treated as equally valid, no matter how much people profess that, and I think there’s some serious personal reassessment that involuntarily identified folks need to be doing on that front too.)

See, I'd love more than anything to agree with all of this, genuinely. Because the scraping and collection process for AI training is highly unethical, and the mass development and hosting of AI takes an obscene amount of water to support, and the training and filtering process is mentally distressing on the workers and can be downright dangerous for mental health. But unless you're able to find me something that can do a more efficient and reliable job than AI can, I'm more than likely not going to stop using it. Just like unless you can find me an equally powerful phone for a similar price as mine, I'm going to use a phone that was likely made with the aid of a sweatshop. All the hate and vitriol towards the people who have used AI even a single time is just imbecilic and makes me want to use it more. This kind of talk won't deter people from using it- it will deter people from disclosing its use, which is worse. The last thing you want to do to get people on your side is insult their intelligence and capabilities.

You can say WordHippo or Google or Thesaurus to find rhyming words and 'tip of my tongue' words, but in the end it takes me less time to ask Claude for an x syllable word that means x than it will to sift through the internet in an uncertain venture to find one.

You can say 'just use your brain', but in the end there are times where I'd rather read something than write something. I've published dozens of fics, and hundreds of thousands of words. I know it's hard. I do writing for a living. And because it's hard, and recently very mentally taxing, sometimes I would rather like to read the niche fetish or odd AU a dozen times in a dozen different slightly shitty ways than I would like to plan, draft, write, and edit a single fic of it. Ever wanted to read something specific, but not write it? Because you can. I'm not saying it's better, because it's not. I'm saying it's easier. And unless you can find me someone who will write me tens of thousands of words of slightly shitty niche fetish fics for a flat $20 at any time of day, I'm going to continue using it.

You can say 'just publish bad art/writing' but believe it or not most people don't actually want to publish things they think are bad!! And most people, contrary to the popular "I would rather read shitty writing etc. etc." That is espoused, no one actually wants to read a fanfic that sucks and is hard to read. There are entire memes dedicated to the writing sins that cause people to back out of fics. The authors will take any form of help to make it better if they think it's beyond their capabilities, including asking an AI to edit and spellcheck. If it's 3 in the morning and my friends aren't awake, then yeah I'll ask Claude to check my work for spelling. And no one would ever know! I genuinely haven't been able to see a reason to get pressed about something as rudimentary as spellcheck. (Not referring to the garbage that Grammarly puts out; that is not just spellcheck).

You can say, 'just commission an artist or make shitty art', but unless you can point me to an artist that is willing and able to do dozens of iterations of the same character concept in semi-realism, instantly, and for free, at 2 AM, I'll probably still use AI. I try not to, though, because I think it's unethical. I don't care with writing because it's scraped my work for sure, so I have a stake in everything it generates lmao.

I absolutely agree with you about research. AIs hallucinate so much that you need to doublecheck every fact they give you with verifiable information. Never, ever use an AI for research because it is more likely to steer you wrong, and people WILL find out if your information is wrong. But no one is a bad, lazy person inherently for using it; they just need to be shown better, more reliable, more efficient methods.

Here's a long anecdote I'd like to share, regarding the popular talking point of AI writing being useless gibberish and painfully obvious: I use AI for brainstorming and getting rid of writer's block, just like the poor schmucks you complained about. I've been using it to draft some ideas for a fic I plan on writing. It generated me a chunk of text with dialogue that was incredibly well-written, so I stole it and edited it slightly. I didn't even have to edit that much, just a few phrases and weird word choices. It was probably 95% AI. I shared it in a discord, just to see what people thought of it, or if they could tell. They proceeded to tell me that my writing is incredibly realistic and that my dialogue is phenomenal. It made me feel bad, lol, but I couldn't take it back. It just confirmed that no one, not even 'AI detectors', can tell if an AI has written something; you can only tell if an AI has written something poorly. And of course, I would never admit that it was AI generated because I know I would be ousted immediately. Just like what I said before. And I never will say anything. Maybe if the general attitude was different, I would have disclosed it so that we can all be in awe of AI's capabilities when used by someone who knows how to write. Maybe I would have never shared it at all. Who knows. Technically, in this case, AI didn't steal anything, I did. Lmao.

Anyway, if you want AI to stop, which is valid and honestly a good complaint to have, you need to come up with actual alternatives. Doing something in a slower, less efficient, less reliable way just because it's the 'right thing to do' is never going to work as a movement along as no one is being tangibly harmed by it. Never. Humans are all about efficiency. If there is a way to boost efficiency, we will find it and use it. There are no two ways about it. It's just human nature.

ai has no fucking place in fandom. none whatsoever. even if you’re “just using it for feedback” or “just using it for prompts” or “just using it to help with writer’s block.” and if you’re using it for research? why on god’s green earth would you use the Lying Machine to do research???

Re: your idea about the vast majority of eyebrow raise gempearl stream moments having unhinged chat messages behind them. This latest Pearl stream (feb 4 I think) really drove that point home for me. Both in that chat was noticeably weirder that day, but also that in general they can’t escape each other, even in other streams.

All Pearl has to do is mention not getting distracted/sidetracked this stream, and chat is filled with Gem and pickles and whatnot. Head collecting? Ask Gem. Hungry Hemits? Agh, if only Gem was online. Need to borrow something from someone’s storage? It’s no longer Impy or Tango, but Gem, that’s first suggested.

And then that day Gem streamed in Pearl’s stead (cool coworker and friend move of her btw) and mentioned “our chats have just enough overlap” about knowing Oli’s peardle theme hotkey. That stream was explicitly connected to Pearl obviously, Gem herself kept bringing her up, but my point is how the cc’s are also aware of how merged they are.

I guess we’re like? Trained? That they’re a package deal. But it’s at bizarre levels compared to other streamers, even ones with more popular pairings. And yeah, it’s pretty funny / cute, especially when one of them gets a good quip in about it. I, too, voted in every round of the unhinged gempearl moments poll. But lately it feels so constant in streams, when even during WL chat usually contained it to episode discussion. Streamers play off the chat’s energy, making more moments chat goes crazy over, and so on, until we get here.

(This might tie into a larger discussion about chat moderation / tone / vibe, especially for Pearl, as seen in the latest stream with many unearned innuendo accusations. But I digress.)

I haven’t been able to catch the recent streams because of. Well. Life. But yeah I can see what you mean from the streams that I have been able to watch from the weeks before, this isn’t meant to discourage chat/fan interaction with ccs or anything, just to clarify first of all, because it’s normal for a streamer to have some back and forth with their chat, and like, it makes sense for a content creator to be seeking out and be aware of what their fans like, y’know? I don’t personally like having ccs acknowledge my existence like. At all. So I never show up in chat, but it’s still perfectly valid for fans to be engaging in chat and being vocal about what they like seeing

But still, if you’re asking for just my thoughts and stuff, I’d agree that there’s been an abundance of chat messages trying to push for more shiny duo interactions, which is most likely just because they’ve gained a lot more popularity as a duo/ship compared to, say, before Secret Life, so naturally, people wanna see more of them! In my heart they are just. So. They’re frequently bought together do not separate secret third thing bonded by the stars and beyond etc. and I imagine for a lot of the fans expressing their love for them together/want for them to interact feel more or less like that

I don’t necessarily want to place blame on anyone for being vocal about it in chat because that’s what the stream chat is for, but you’re still making a pretty good point about chat being really focused with making Pearl interact with Gem on stream when she’s not really wanting/needing to do that. It’s a bit upsetting sometimes to see loads of messages trying to get an interaction and perhaps even derailing what’s happening in the stream, it’s frustrating to see some people in chat bring up shipping/shipping-adjacent topics when it’s already been made clear that it’s not something they want to see/have shoved at them (THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THEM VOICING DISLIKE/HATRED FOR SHIPPING! NOT AN EXCUSE FOR PEOPLE TO DISS ON SHIPPERS!), so it does get a bit too much for me to see so many chat messages poking for a shiny duo interaction— I’m not really the person to speak on chat moderation stuff, I’m just. A girlie who likes shiny duo a bit too much, so there’s not much I can say regarding what I feel like is appropriate, we can all make our own call on what’s an okay amount of poking and nudging. Strictly in my own opinion, I do think we can chill a bit on that front, because I don’t want ccs to feel forced to only do this one thing and interact with just this one person, there’s plenty of other enjoyable player interactions and stream moments

omg... what an episode! This has been fantastic, honestly!!! Everything from the plot to the animation, all of it was SOOOO GOOD. It's crazy and wacky and I love it! It featured side characters the whole time, love those kinds of changes! and we got character backstories which WOAH that was a nice surprise :D

AND AND i get a dose of the Mini Crew? HELL YEAH

this has been phenomenal and I truly think this might lead to something. Aside from the imagery the Team likes to tease me and goop!4 theory with, this could lead to an arc, likely on Karen. A non-Mr.Puzzles arc, I'm all for it.

(and y'know me I would've called it the most non-Puzzles Puzzles arc potential of all times, that doesn't seem that it's linked to Puzzles in any way but it could be brought back bc character development. after all, Karen is linked to Marty, Puzzle Park, and the corporation and Swag to episodes related to IGBP. but for our sakes, let's not have Puzzles this time, it'll be a very creative challenge for the Team)

If there's no arc, that is totally fine! I am more than happy to just have more episodes like this without it being in an arc. not necessarily non-plot relevant bc of the corporation and Karen's mystery husband. it's still insane that the Team dropped that in for us and Swag's backstory like that. Amazing job, truly.

Now I know some people might've been confused about Mario being in the thumbnail and not in the episode. I get it really. According to Ben, he didn't see the episode itself until after its release and this thumbnail was what the Team sent him to do. It's crazy ik, but do understand that they're working on a tight schedule.

Take it from me: I work as a major editor for a publishing group (that i'm not going to specify) and we have to release a new thing every two weeks. It's not of "one team works on this and then passes it on to the next" like a factory production line. All teams are working at the same time and have to deliver at the same time, regardless of the amount they were given in the first place. And there are times when something's missing, we have to improvise (but still maintain good quality) just so we could meet the deadline. Even if we have good communication with each other.

Obviously for the SMG4 Team, they have a lot of things going on in their lives, other projects to work on, timezones to get through, and yet they still have the moment for this show. Perhaps when Ben was sent the request, they planned to have Mario in the episode but the writers (Aaron, Paul, and Wiz) decided to write him out. Who knows? Just imagine doing a thumbnail and then the group chat tells you to make a different one quickly before they release it. Plus, his computer is holding on by a thread from all the rendering, poor Ben

i like to think, as a hc or a theory (because it’s definitely possible), that charles has had a few kisses throughout his high school years, sure, but past that he’s undeniably a virgin– well, kind of undeniably, because I think he’d deny it if found out by trying to use technicalities (“I mean that one time there was friction involved–“), but to any reasonable person, and by occult standards (see: edwin being a virgin sacrifice), he’s a virgin.

and i think this because it seems like him to fib about his level of experience (like he did when agreeing he’d sleep with crystal, matching her level of casualness about it) when in the presence of people who do, actually, have experience, in the hopes he doesn’t come off as lame or childish. given what we know about his “friends” when he was alive, they seem like the type to have teased or bullied boys– especially in their own circle– who haven’t gotten laid, or at the very least would’ve thought less of someone for it. and given what we know about charles, i don’t think he’d be nearly as sleazy and inconsiderate as his group when it comes to landing girls with the primary intention of adding to his body count. and considering he’s only supposed to be 16? and has never mentioned any significant relationships pre-death? it just seems unlikely.

all that to say– I can see him maintaining that facade of experience and confidence literally right up until the moment it matters, and in the heat of the moment getting nervous and embarrassed because “uhhh. so I may have been exaggerating some things.” though he’s not totally clueless either, I think it’d take a bit of a soft heart to heart moment for him to be reassured enough that he won’t fuck up and hurt his partner to go any further.

anyway not sure what the relevance of this is, but it’s something.
