F*ck you, Kirk !
Imagine, you're in El Coyote Cojo, drinking in your corner. Then, you're hearing screams and insults. Upstairs, Vanessa slaps Kirk who try to escape, being pushed in the stairs and then Vanessa jumps on him really mad. Jackie AND Pepee are forced to intervene. Classic moment in the bar : Kirk tried his luck (again !) with the girl but she doesn't love him, he's disgusting. Jackie has to take Vanessa outside while Pepe gives Kirk ice, sermonising him. Classic day there...

Outsider No More | Goro Takemura & Female V/OC
And then he understands, clearly understands what she had been feeling, trying to tell him. And he now realizes too, he does not want to lose her either.
An interpretation of how a romance between Takemura and Corpo Female V could have been. Changing between Vs and Takemuras POV. Mostly following the main story of the game, adding bits and pieces here and there for a little bit more depth. So spoilers ahead.

Day 1
V's phone rings shortly after she stumbles through her apartment door. It was just past midnight. She drops down onto her couch ungracefully as she takes the call. "Yea?" "Takemura here, I called someone who wants to meet with you, hear you out. Japantown in three days." She rubs her forehead and eyes, the world is still spinning pretty badly. "Sounds great I guess..." She croaks. Takemura tilts his head, he seems concerned „Is everything alright, V?“ „Yes, I feel great. I just had one drink too much I think, met with some old friends tonight.“ „Ah, yes the meeting you talked about earlier. Then have a good night V, I will send you the exact coordinates.“
He waits for her to reply, a particularly strong wave of dizziness hit her and she has to close her eyes for a moment: „Takemura wait, I almost forgot, met someone today, got a meeting tomorrow. Regarding Hellman…Strong lead, you wanna join?“ He seemed to consider it for a moment but then agrees. "Great see you tomorrow, we will meet at 6. Good Night" "Morning or.." but she hangs up, unfortunately, her stomach could no longer withstand the alcohol, so she hastily runs to the toilet to get rid of it. After a few times of vomiting, her stomach seems to have calmed down. She undresses and lies down under the covers.
She really feels better. The funeral at El Coyote Cojo helped more than she thought it would. So many old friends and colleagues had been there, saying nice things, leaving presents. She spent a lot of time drinking with Viktor and talking with Misty. Neither without one or the other, she would be at the point she is now. After a few drinks and tears, she even sat there laughing, joking about Jackie's old lines and best moments. But regardless, silent tears still ran down her cheeks. She can't deny that she could use a good friend by her side, she misses him terribly.
Guess, I am not an option? „Johnny, what the fuck“ she abruptly pulls the blanket up to her chin. Chill V, I know how you look naked. I am in your head, forgot about that? He lights a cigarette. So I guess we like each other now? Yea. Just needed to get used to…you. But can’t deny I'm hella excited to meet Rogue tomorrow, even though the ‘Saka scum will be joining apparently, so we good? She yawns, sure why not and he might be of good use for us you know, don't know much about him yet.  She gets comfortable under the cover and after a few more blinks, watching the ads outside of her apartment window, her eyes fall closed.
A ringing in her head and ears lets her wake up unsteadily from her sleep. Fuck. "Huh?" She doesn’t even bother to open her eyes, even through her eyelids she could see that the sun was just beginning to rise. Orange light shone through them. "Takemura here, do we meet in twenty minutes or tonight at 6." Is he serious? Sleepily, with a rough voice, she answers “I know you're not used to living in Night City yet Takemura, and I also know that meetings at Arasaka used to be early in the morning. However, here it's the other way around, everything starts in the evening." Damn, she turns to the other side, so her eyes are no longer flooded with light. „Understood, sorry for waking you, V. Until tonight“ „It is alright, bye.“ Please, we need more sleep.
The next time she’s awake, it’s from the radio Johnny had turned on. He was now kneeling in front of her. Wake the fuck up V, it’s almost 5, time to meet Rogue. Fuck, you tell me I have been sleeping for 15 hours?? Guess we both needed it, he vanished again and with him a part of her headaches. Thirty minutes later she sits in her car dialing Takemuras number. „Hi, where should I pick you up“ „Cherry Blossom Market.“ „See ya in 5“. You really take him with ya, huh? Is it because of his pretty eyes? She shakes her head at his ridiculous comment. Johnny laughed and pulled himself through the gap of the front seats. You can’t lie to me V, I know that you liked what you saw..Oh shut up. Takemura drops into the seat, looking at her. His eyes stood out even more in the red light and thanks to Johnny she was paying more attention to them now. "Where are we going, anyway?" he further inquires as she is already driving down the road. "To the Afterlife." "Should have expected that." "You know this club? Already? Thought you have been here just a few days?" "I try to gather as much information I can. Last time I was there, I have been rather rudely turned down by the Queen of the Fixers. So I am asking myself why should we have any better luck now?" She smirks, "Simple, we have me with us." and she presses on the gas.
The loud bass of a rock song pounds in her ears as she steps through the large double doors with Takemura in tow. „Hey V! Anything special today?“ „Nah, wanted to talk to Rogue.“ Claire looks for two clean glasses under the bar, „a few more minutes I think, she is in a meeting right now. Anything to drink while waiting?“ „Yea, remember the drink of the guy who was here with me?“ „Jackie Welles, sure, uhm Vodka on the rocks, some ginger beer, and lime…“ „and a splash of love…one for me please, or…?“ She looks at Takemura questioning „No, thanks I will pass“ „Come on, it’s on me. If you don’t want any alcohol, maybe something else?“ „Fine. Water please, with a lemon.“
They take a seat next to each other at the bar, „You aren’t from here, are ya?“ Claire asks as she slides over the drinks looking at Takemura „No.“ She looks at V, raises her eyebrows, and she answers by raising her shoulders and contorting her face into a questioning expression. "About the races, have you given it any more thought?" She takes a sip of her drink "Yea, hell, let's do it." "Great! Meet me at my garage some time and we discuss all the detes.” She takes another sip and even though the drink is delicious, her stomach turns when tasting the alcohol in it. She should take a break from drinking. “Seems like Rogue is free now."
She stands, nods to Takemura, and the two of them make their way past the bar, past two men arguing, and up a gallery. Damn, I can’t believe it, Rogue really made it.
"Did you bring the money this time or just your friend for another intimidation attempt? Although I have to tell you, he hasn't had any luck either. “ V notices Takemura making a barely perceptible movement behind her, but no one else seems to pay any attention to him. "No everything is fine Rogue, here is the money." Both of their eyes glow red as the money changes hands. "Preem, one hour and you will get your intel." "Nova, we will wait." As they walk out of the gallery, she sees that the one next to it has just become available and she points to it "We can wait over there more comfortably."
He frowns "Is there also a place here that.... how shall I put it...is less noisy?" with turn she faces him "I know, you get used to the volume eventually." and dismiss it with a wave of her hand "The back rooms are pretty quiet, but I'd have to ask if one is free, they're usually reserved - for real serious biz or personal strip shows." She winks - Takemura doesn’t show any reaction to that - and she turns on her heels once again to ask Claire.
One moment later she and Takemura step through the glass door of the cabin where she, Jackie, T-Bug and Deshawn had met, and they both drop down on the dark couch next to each other. "Ah yes, that's much better.“ Takemura remarks, rubbing his temples “Rogue lives up to her reputation. I'm curious what we will get in an hour.” “That’s why she’s the queen.” The two of them sit in silence for a short time, before Takemura began to speak again: “Night City is very noisy. I’m having trouble sleeping at night. And there is loud music everywhere. It is very different to Japan.” “ I've only been to Konpeki Plaza in Tokyo once, so I don't have much of an idea of how business works there. You never had to go to an underground club or so to do biz, beat someone up or whatever you did at Arasaka?”
Takemura shakes his head. On his own, he didn't seem to reveal very much. Perhaps she should ask more specifically, or break the ice with minor information. "Huh, it's kinda funny, even tho we were both employees there, we lived almost completely different lives. The locations of making the real biz - and with that, I mean under the counter biz - haven’t changed at all for me, just the people. Oh, by the way“ she sends him an attachment „here is a picture of me, a few weeks before my last day.“ She is sitting at her desk, smiling at the camera, her boss behind her, hand on her shoulder. Her hair long, platinum blonde and up in a high ponytail. She is wearing a black dress and heels. „This was before a business lunch in Tokyo. I normally wouldn’t wear dresses like this.“ „You look very different now.“ Takemura admits. „After I got fired, I cut my hair off and dyed it black. Didn’t want to be recognized at all.“ and by now her hair is almost a few inches below her jaw.
Takemura asks curiously „About that, you wanna tell me how and why you got fired?“ he leans his right arm on the backrest and looks at her. She rolls her eyes but smirks, „It’s actually not that thrilling. For context: Actually, I majored in criminal psychology but didn't want to go to the NCPD. Through vitamin B - a guy I met at a bar, Jenkins - I found a job in netrunning , specializing in counterintel, where they were looking for someone with my experience and basic tech knowledge. So I worked for Jenkins for two years, the guy on the photo - complete asshole if you ask me, one of the types that looks like an abuser and probs is about what I heard - there was a Frankfurt thing gone wrong, „ Takemura nods, „Mh, I might have heard of it.“ „Great apparently everyone has. And Abernathy - his boss - heard it, too, told Jenkins to stop doing his biz like this and stole his promotion. Well, and as a man fragile as he was, he felt his ego hurt. And for some reason, I should be the woman of choice to kill Abernathy.” Takemura, now with a serious expression, stroke his beard with his left hand: “You said yes?”
“Well I had to, would've been next otherwise. Problem was, I couldn’t get any more dirty details on our target, how to get this job done quickly, so I asked Jackie if he could help“, she makes a pause, a little sting in her chest, but also a little relief every time she mentions him now, „You do not have to keep talking If you do not want to“ Takemura offers her „No, it’s fine really, got a lot off my chest yesterday…So there I was at Lizzy’s with him and three Arasaka employees - I haven’t seen before - approached me, almost broke my nose, stole the data shard and shut off my cybernetics.“ „They found out?“ „Yea. Abernathy sent them, Jenkins probably got fired too or killed - hopefully. Lost my job that day, almost 200k Eddies, my apartment and cybernetics, also my life almost, if Jackie wouldn’t have been there.“ And she hadn’t saved him, she looks at her lap, again it seems Takemura wanted to make a move but hesitated “Pretty similar on how we met, huh?” She jokes and looks at him. However, his expression was unfathomable. Was there something he wasn’t telling her?
„You two, were close?“ he asked „Yea, really close - not romantically - but closer than best friends…“ though she remembers the kiss they shared one night, even before Jackie got serious with Misty. It was their second contract together, she barely made it out. Drunk on adrenaline and vodka, they sat on the roof above Jackie’s garage, and it just happened. The kiss was short, intense and ended with them both laughing, it didn’t feel right. Two weeks later he asked Misty she remembers how he told her a few weeks ago that he loved her. She clears her throat, now she really didn’t feel like getting carried away…” What about you? Got anyone waitin’ for you in Japan?“
Takemura looks at the glass wall behind her and shakes his head, „No, Arasaka was the only 'family' I had.“ Somehow it seemed to strike her only now that Takemura was in a very similar situation as her. Both of them had lost something incredibly important that day. Without thinking about it, she reaches for his shoulder, pressing lightly, an understanding look on her face „It will get better.“ His bright eyes were inspecting her dark ones once again - intensely. Come on V, please don’t give me this cliché staring at each other’s eyes shit, I’m going to fucking vomit. Besides, the hour is almost over. Hastily, she removes her hand and stand up quickly. “Rogue should have our intel by now.”
Sometime later she and Takemura step outside the Afterlife again. She had problems following Rogues plan since Johnny just couldn’t shut up about her. Takemura hasn’t said a word after they left the private area and has just been listening and accepting the data shard quietly but seemed to be impressed. Now, they both walk silently to the big highway “So. I need to get to Panam ASAP, should I drop you off anywhere on the way? Where are you staying by the way?” “No there is no need, you need to get Hellman quickly. In the Motel at the Cherry Blossom Market.” Oh no. “Damn, you really should get another one. Here..” She sends him some coordinates “the No-Tell Motel. It’s in a similar price range, take one of the top floor rooms, they are quieter. There will be also all kinds of weird biz, but it’s waaaaaay cleaner, promise and less noisy.”
“Thank you, V.” he nods his head slowly while looking for a tram station, looking a little bit lost and she calls her - Jackies - bike. She gets on it and starts the engine, but hesitates to start driving. Her eyes glow red again “And take this. I don’t need it at the moment, it’s my old car. As a borrowed gift for saving my life.” She smiles at him slighly. “I can not take this.” Takemura looks a little uncomfortable “Well, I’m not taking it back now. Just bring it back in a similar shape.” He nods once again and simulates a slight bow “I will. Stay save, V.” She hits the gas of Jackie’s bike and chases along the highway. Johnny appears behind her and holds onto her waist.
Damn, was surprised you didn’t give him your apartment keys too, or blow him right there. He really left an impression on you and I don’t like it.Well, maybe, but I don’t trust him enough for that. Yet you mean, never trusting Suits again, my ass V. She could practically feel him rolling his eyes. “It’s just hard to not trust him”, she mutters to herself. Nevertheless, she feels torn. She hadn't gotten a single new piece of information out of him. Doesn't understand why she suddenly thought this was not that important anymore. Maybe because they were indeed alike in many aspects. A common background, a similar fate, an almost identical goal. She told herself that she wouldn't have noticed his eyes all that much if Johnny hadn't pointed them out to her.  After all, what the hell does he know?
Day 2
____________________________________________________
Takemura is sitting on the balcony of his room on the top floor of the No-Tell Motel, his feet up and resting on the railing, eating fried noodles, his rifle leaning next to his chair. It was difficult to get any food down in this city, it tasted all the same, like sawdust and plastic. He is having a hard time controlling himself from throwing his food full force into the canal below him. With each day in Night City as an outcast, he finds it harder to stay calm. Maybe that's why everyone is drinking here.
He rubs his eyes with his thumb and forefinger and decides that the next time he had a chance to drink with V, he would take up the offer. She had at least been spot on with her recommendation of the hotel. He had slept through the night almost completely in a clean bed and was able to shower extensively this morning, his freshly washed shirt was also swinging from left to right within a small breeze on the balcony. So she probably knows about a place they could find normal tasting food at.
V was currently the only person he had contact with and he didn't expect to get along with her, at all. He had appreciated her giving him information about herself. Although, the conversation about Arasaka and her expulsion had indeed left a bitter aftertaste, very similar to that of the city's food. He had heard of problems here and there in Japan, but Saburo-sama had been in charge of bigger tasks like development, research, and wasn’t involved in any employer business whatsoever, so Takemura had never known what life was like for some of the other employees, but he tried to brush the thought away.
He has to admit that he is also quite impressed with how she had managed to escape Arasaka twice. How much she already had to endure emotionally and now has to again, and how despite everything she is getting things done, that he'd already written off. And even if he had believed that finding Hellman or Miss Parker could be a big problem just a few days ago, he has great confidence in her by now. She had called him in the middle of the night, quickly told him her plan and said she would get back to him around noon. Takemura had been trying to get as much new information as possible alone since then, but no one could tell him more about Evelyn Parker. It was as if she had never existed.
So now he had spent the last few hours waiting in the motel. He put away the barely touched noodles and leaned back in the chair, lost in thought. She had been right that the two of them were in quite a similar situation. He could well understand her grief, and he, too, felt understood. He was glad not to have to work all alone in Night City, even if it had not been easy to ask her about it. Because he had to admit that it was not easy to get along here, which was a new circumstance for him. There were many unspoken rules and customs. And he realized that V was right, that he simply stood out.
There was one thing he didn't really understand, though: the car, had thought about it a lot yesterday when he drove with it through Night City to run some errands. It had been a very sudden and impulsive gesture, for saving her life she said. But he could not yet know how useful the car could be. It hadn't really been easy to get a clear picture of her yet, and that intrigued him. It had not only been his job to physically defend Saburo and train others in doing so but also to quickly assess people and their intentions. Rarely had he been wrong. But she..Thief, ex-corporate netrunner, knowledge in psychology, all just hard skills. Resilient, Preserving and...mhmm. Egoistical, calculating and manipulating? Or honorable, kind and truthful? Maybe a little bit of everything? Hard to say.
Checking out the time - almost 4 p.m - he gets up, throws over his almost dry shirt and leaned over the railing, watching a small boat sailing past the motel. He honestly couldn't wait to meet Hellman and blow off some steam, even if it won't be as satisfying as the revenge on Yorinobu. Just as he was considering exercising his muscles, his phone rings. It was V, out of breath „I got Hellman. Bringing him so the sunset motel, sending you the coordinates.“ Finally. „Great, I will be there as soon as possible. Be careful, V.“ She smiles and winks, „Oh you need to worry less about me than Hellman.” He couldn't help but smile back.
Takemura slams the door of Vs car as he sees her walking up and down a window in one of the upstairs motel rooms. The motel was located a few kilometers outside of town, so it took him some time to get here. With a few big steps he was already at the top of the stairs, eventually standing in front of the door and opening it. V and Hellman are sitting in front of each other. Hellman has his hands bound behind his back and another scrap of fabric around his neck, probably to silence him - if needed. She sits wide-legged on a turned chair, both of her muscular arms casually on the backrest, totally in control of the situation. She no longer wore her shirt - it seemed to be used as a restraint and gag - now she is wearing a top, which exposed half of her back and ribs. Takemura ran his right hand over his beard, his eyes lingering on her bare skin, unintentionally following the curves of her body.
„Good to see you V, quite the view in here.” He walks next to Hellman and crosses his arms, looking at her, she smiles, but Hellman answers first “Takemura?! What the hell is he doing here?” Her gaze briefly switches over to Hellman “Takemura is a very good friend of mine, didn’t I mention it? Thought I would call him, just if you weren’t talkative enough. Plus he has some questions on his own. You play nice, he might even save your ass.” “I wouldn’t count on that.” Takemura replies dryly. Hellman was freaking out, looking right at her “Look, I give you everything you want, but please don’t leave me alone with him. The blueprints, right pocket of my jacket.” Takemura searches his pockets roughly and hands her the data shard.
Her eyes lit up blue as she observes the data, when they turn back to her normal black eyes, they switch to Takemura “I’m done here. What will you do with him?” He answers with an unchanged expression, stonily “I haven’t decided yet.” And continues, looking directly at her “You know I can be impulsive.” She swallowed quickly. "Then feel free to keep me updated, he is all yours. I'll be waiting outside." Hellman looked back and forth between the two of them "No, please, just let me...." but she stuffs the piece of cloth back in his mouth. Takemura looks at her “V, I will remember this.“ And as she walks out of the door, Takemura turns back to Hellman “She didn’t offer you any water I see. Unacceptable. Inhumane.” He walks over to the bureau to lean on it “But that is not me. You will see the difference. I will give you buckets or even a bathtub full with it.” The door closes.
From outside, however, Takemura suddenly heard rumbling and stumbling. „I'll be right back." and he opened the door to check on her, but he didn't see her. Quietly, he closed the door behind him and looked around. He spots her sitting on the bottom steps. Quickly, he was next to her. She is shaking violently and soaked in sweat and dirt, some scratches on her arms. She must have fallen down the stairs. „I don’t want you to see me like this." She mumbles, not facing him. With wobbly legs, she stands up and tries to walk a few steps, but they fail and Takemura had to catch her so that she wouldn't hit the ground again. "Let me help you." She doesn't resist and he carefully leads her to a nearby concrete bench, supporting her by her waist.
Naturally, he takes off his jacket, drapes it over her and kneels down in front of her "It's the biochip, is it not? I did not know it was this bad already." he asks as he scans her face for injuries, none found. She simply nods. "Yea. Thought out of the six months I would start getting problems at month five tops. Unfortunately not." "Can I help you in any way?" he asks concerned. "Noo I...I just need a little time to myself, please." He nods, could understand. "Though, I would advise you to not drive home anymore today. I have rented the room next door for the night. Feel free to sleep there when you are feeling better. If you need anything else, please let me know." He got up, but she takes his hand swiftly - Takemura notices how weak she is - and she looks straight at him "Why are you so nice to me?" "Why wouldn't I be?" he replies, squeezing her hand lightly and walking back to Hellman.
The interrogation didn’t take longer than an hour. He got every last piece of information out of Hellman, including long-forgotten details about Yorinobu stealing the relic, how he did it, who helped, how Hellman found out and managed to vanish. However, while pressing Hellman's head into the bathtub full of water every few seconds, Takemura couldn't get V out of his mind. Eventually, he was satisfied when Hellman was bound and gagged again, sitting on the chair, and he could check on her. He enters their room quietly, it was pretty dark, just one small light next to the second bed was lit up. She is already sleeping peacefully covered by his heavy leather jacket.
Takemura hangs up his soaking shirt, takes the blanket from the lower end of her bed, and carefully cloaks her whole body, before lying down himself. He watches her for a while. It had been shocking to see her so fragile for the second time. Especially the difference from before and the suddenness had concerned him - one moment she was bursting with physical vitality, the next one could be digging her grave. He could tell she is running out of time and he really felt sorry for her. Life often seemed to put obstacles in her way. As he had understood it, there were only a few weeks between her expulsion from Arasaka, the heist that went wrong, and her unfortunate death revelation. A feeling of unfairness rose in him. Sorrowfully, he looks over at her. For his own sake and for hers, he hoped they had more time.
____________________________________________________
Day 3
She wakes up early in the morning, the sun just rising and an orange beam shines through the shutters, a broad-shouldered and dark silhouette throws a shadow at the wall behind her. Takemura. His hair is already in a neat bun, he just put his shirt on and was buttoning it up. Shame she missed that. She observes him before she lays aside her covers - he must have put it over her while she slept - and his jacket and sits up. He turns his head “V, you are awake.” He stands up and walks around his bed to take a seat in front of her. He rests his elbows on his knees leaning closer to her, hands folded under his chin. His shirt is still very much open in the neck and chest area. His cybernetics were curving down his neck and end in a long black plate, similar to the sternum, she can clearly see the outline of his top abdominal muscles.
She swallows and notices a tingle in her chest, fuck, yesterday’s comment finds its way back into her memory, impulsively. “How are you feeling? Did you sleep well?” He asks while inspecting her. “Much better thanks. What about you?” He shakes his head, leans back and continues to button up his shirt, “Hardly, you sometimes scream while you sleep. I do not mind. Had to sleep under similar circumstances before.” “I’m sorry...” “...don’t be, really.” He continues to talk while getting up and putting on his jacket “We are meeting Oda tonight, I have some business to attend to before. Can you drive yourself?” She stretched her back and arms, checking on her control over her own body “Yes, definitely. Feeling in control again.” Takemura nods “Great,” and walks to the door “I will send you the coordinates tonight, if you need any help don’t hesitate to call me. Until tonight, V.” "Wait!" he truns around, hand at the door "The interrogation yesterday was fun, maybe we should do something similar again?" He laughs lightly "I would like that." And he closes the door behind him.
With a groan she lets herself fall backward on the bed. Johnny appears sitting next to her and leans over her face. What the fuck was that?  What? First of all 'the interrogation yesterday was fun, maybe we should do something similar again' and most importantly that feeling in your chest. Have you never felt... Fuck, Of course, V! He jumped from the bed, furious, she sits up. The problem is “I” never felt lust for a Corporat. And how did this feeling so suddenly even comes from?! She frowns and responds angrily. Oh, you saint, newsflash for you Johnny, you are in my body and if you remember I used to be a Corporat, too. She gets up, walks closer to him and stings her finger in his chest, and you know what? With this body, “I” fuck whoever I want whenever I want. He slaps her hand away, get some new clothes you smell like shit and vanishes. As much as she hates agreeing with Johnny right now, he was right. Getting Panams car back, slaughtering the Raffens and Kang Tao, interrogating Hellman and losing control yesterday had left traces of sand, blood and other stuff on her clothes.
Though his words got her thinking. Technically it had been three days Takemura and her first spoke. And in those three days she hadn't learned much about him, but she had gotten a feeling about him. Even if this is completely subjective, of course. It was strange, she finds it easy to get in contact with people and also to get along well with them in a very short time - it had not been any different in her lifetime, due to work - and quickly crushing on people and flirting with them wasn't exactly new to her either. But the question she asks herself now is: was that it or is there more? Because somehow a feeling is creeping into her mind that goes beyond that, more in the direction of... well... trust and security. Two attributes she had found in only a few people in Night City until now.
She washes her face quickly in the bathroom - there will be enough time to shower in her apartment later - and she heads down the stairs to the small weapon trader. “You selling clothes, too?” She asks. The trader looks at her from head to toe, “Got only a few here, take a look.” She digs through the box of clothes and finds rather tight, but very stretchy black pants with leather patches on knees and thighs. In addition, a golden bra that reaches below her ribs, she inspects it. „It is reinforced, right?“ „Yup. Some claim it’s bulletproof but I wouldn’t count on it.“ „Preem, I will take both.“ She puts her new clothes on her bike to her coat and starts her way back to her apartment.
Once again she is sitting in the shower of her apartment, the water that disappeared down the drain, brown, yellow, dark red. Finally, she was alone after a few days, even Johnny isn't talking to her and finally, she can let the built-up emotions run free. Last night had come upon her again and with it the feeling of no longer being able to control herself, of being completely at Johnny's mercy. It didn't help that now every few days panic rose in her chest, choking off her breath. It was all just too much for one person, wasn't it? And the thought of not being around any more...With the water running and the radio turned on in the next room, she presses her face into her knees and cries without restraint. Sometimes she was surprised at herself, how she coped with everything that happened to her in the last days. But it wasn’t - isn’t - anything but easy.
Additionally, the pain of her loss kept coming up, the feeling of being in debt to others - especially Viktor and Takemura - and the feeling of being a burden to them and her other friends when she suddenly loses control over her body. Needing their help desperately to find a solution. A few minutes passed and the shaking and hasty breathing slowly decrease. She gets up and runs cool water all over her tear-swollen face. She walks out of the shower and in front of the mirror, looking at herself. "Get it together. You aren't dead yet." As much as it does her good to isolate herself from time to time and let her emotions run free, it also feels important to actually try to do something about it. Though it’s much harder.
Completely freshened up, a little freer from tension and feeling a lot more like her old self, she strolls alongside the glowing floor in Japantown near Jig-Jig street and decides to buy some coffee before she waits at the location where she and Takemura have agreed to meet. Just before the small coffee stand, she sees Johnny casually leaning against a wall on the other side. "Hi, I'd like two iced coffees please." Wow, first your car and now coffee V, I'd do better than that. She ignores him. Come on V, I bet you can't keep this up for long. She continues walking towards the meeting spot and turns on her internal radio. Johnny appeared in front of her every few steps, grimacing and silently forming some rather violent insults. Inside a tunnel, she loses her patience and pauses the music.
Okay, spit it out asshole, what do you want? However, she doesn’t let him get a word in edgewise and is now mimicking him. V, I have the emotional maturity of a ten-year-old who has just been told that he is grounded, she grimaces and rubs her eyes ironically. V, unfortunately, I can only think in black and white and put everyone in the same box. Oh V, how can you think of allying with a corpo or fuck him, because I - as someone who lives rent-free in your head - has the right to decide that, and she shows him her right middle finger, the other hand is unfortunately occupied with coffee. For a moment she thinks she and Johnny are about to attack each other, but he just smirks, shows her both middle fingers and disappears. Huh. With easier steps now, she walks along the rest of the tunnel, follows the canal a bit and finally sits down on the concrete barrier.
She doesn’t have to wait long until she hears her car, it stops in front of her and Takemura climbs out, her heart pausing for a second. “It is good to see you, V. You look a lot better.” He leans over the concrete barrier with his arms, right next to her, facing the canal. “As much as I'd love to return the compliment...but you honestly look pretty beat up.” She hands him one of the coffees “What happened?” He turns around, resting his back against the concrete “You see a man robbed of his implants, money and dignity. Look well.” She snorts, he looks at her angrily “Sorry Goro, but been there, done that. It will get better. Here...” She nudges his crossed arms with the coffee, he takes a sip and contorts his face “This one is already cold.” “Yea but it’s cold on purpose. You wanna tell me you never had an iced coffee, not even in summer?”
He shakes his head, but takes another sip “Guess it might be not so bad if you get used to it.” She smiles “See.” He turns sideways facing her, “There is something I wanted to ask you. Next time we meet...Do you know a place where we can get good-tasting foods? Everything here tastes like sawdust and plastic. Maybe something not local?” Wait. Might he be asking what she thinks he is? Or does she just want him to be asking what she thinks he is? She jumps down, mirroring his gesture, deciding to be bold about it. “Are you asking me to invite you to a date because you don’t know where we should go if you would ask me out?” She looks up at him, defiantly. He frowns “Are you mocking me V?” “A bit yea.” She winks, his face relaxes again and he, too, is now showing a bit of a smile. The first time she sees him smiling she thinks. “But as it happens, I know just the place. Hope Sushi is fine?” “Real or fake fish?” He asks skeptically, but rows back immediately, when he sees the expression on her face “Sorry, I will try to keep an open mind.“ “So, then we...” but they were interrupted by an arriving car.
V and Takemura observe the car as it makes a u-turn and the engine is shut off a few meters away. She hops back onto the barrier. “By car, a good sign. Usually, he is camouflaged.” As the man shuts the door of his car, Takemura walks a few steps towards him. Both of them bow to each other. “Takemura-san.” “Oda.” “Is this her, your thief?”
She rolls her eyes, but Takemura answers first. „She is my witness, V.“ Gently she tilts her head, „I am V, thank you for hearing me and Goro out.” “So speak. I hear you know things.” She looks at Takemura, he nods encouragingly. She starts explaining herself, as respectfully as possible. “Konpeki Plaza, I was there that night when it happened. First it looked like your typical family quarrel, until - unfortunately for all - Yorinobu lunged at Saburo, choking him...“ Oda I interrupts her, his voice furious “Silence. Not one word more. You will bring death to your door.” He adds with a cold voice. Immediately after Oda voices this threat, Takemura moves closer to her and places himself between her and Oda, his arms crossed, facing Oda. Former bodyguard, huh, she can't help but feel a little safer.
“But it is the truth, Hanako-sama must hear it.“ Takemura insists. “My one job is to keep her save in this city, forgotten by the gods.” “Is she in danger?” “Now? No. Yet, during the parade to honor Arasaka-sama, most certainly.” Takemura seems to grow impatient: “I bring you this witness to his murder and you only care about a silly parade?!” “Correct, unlike you I have not yet failed to keep my oath to my duty.” That wasn’t fair to him and she barges in: “At least he is trying to do something. You are just ignoring the truth.” and turning to Oda, Takemura adds coldly “You will regret those words.”
"The only thing I regret is coming here to meet you. There is a price on your head, I’m doing you a favor not cutting it off and bringing it straight to Yorinobu-sama.“ After a threat like this, she would normally start shooting, but that is in no ones interest right now. However, Takemura made a move towards Oda and she decides to distract the two from each other, she jumps down the concrete barrier stepping between Oda and Takemura, fully aware it is considered rude and dangerous for her.
"Oda, you are an Arasaka soldier! This is not a request. We remind you of your duty to be truthful to your superiors." It worked, Takemura looked at her and stepped away from Oda, closer to her. Oda broke of his rampage and faces her. "I did not come here to be lectured by a thief." Now that was too much even for her patience. "I am tired of being called a thief. Wasn't always what I am now. And your friend here didn't always look like a bum. Feel free to join us. Plenty of room at the bottom of the heap. Not enticed? Then do your duty. Tell Hanako what nobody else wants to hear!" Oda turns around without saying a word and getting back into his car.
Takemura starts talking again first. “Be safe out there my friend. We are all so far from home here.” then turns to V a small smile on his face "That should be to him, as you say, food for thought. Interesting to see you more from that side too." "Just gotta tell it like it is sometimes." "It is a shame nothing will come of it." "How come?" "It should have been obvious. Oda is a perfectionist. He most fears to make a mistake." V had calmed down by now.
V pats Takemura on his shoulder, resting her hand there, and asks rhetorically “Yea. And by the way, fine friend there. Got anymore? And thanks by the way, that you told me we are going to meet Hanakos bodyguard before the actual meeting.“ He shakes his head “Alas, only him and I am sorry V, I thought you could back out. He is very dangerous after all.” He nods in the direction of her car and they both get in. She closes the passenger door, “It’s fine, but please be more open to me from now on, since I am trying to do the same." Takemura nods „I am sorry V. I will try my best.“ "How do you know him anyway?” "He was one of my students, I trained him to be Hanako-samas bodyguard." V whistles, "You have succeeded in any case. I was a bit scared to be honest. You both make the same intimidating impression the first time one meets you." "Only the first time?" Takemura asks.
V shrugs "Depends on your mood I guess. You have been kind to me the last days." He nods, " In Japan, we try to show respect and kindness to everyone. At least most of the time. Quite the opposite of this city. Odas seems to have forgotten this as well." "At least we tried." He seems to consider something “We tried yes, but we didn’t fail. We obtained something very useful.“„What do you mean?“ Takemura turns on his seat, facing her “What Oda said. They return to Tokyo after the parade. Do you not see? The parade. This could be our chance. If you could get to Hanako-sama somehow...” She snorts “Sure, good idea. Whatcha gonna do? Jump from a balcony to her airship and kidnap her? Oh, wait, you could offer her tea and we will be sitting at a table together talking calmly about everything.” Takemura looks at her, earnestly. Her smile vanishes, “Wait, Goro, this was a joke. You can’t be seriously considering this. You don’t have your implants. That straight up sounds like a suicide mission.” Takemura lets himself fall back into the seat, massaging his eyes “You are right. We must do a proper reconnaissance first. We need a map of Japantown, as well as more details about the airships.” “Hold on.” He faces her again “It is your turn to call on friends, V. Do her know a fixer who can help?”
She stares at him with a slightly opened mouth. She surely didn’t expect that. She did notice, - additionally to him telling her - that he can be impulsive, yes, but she thought it was less serious. She thought he was more...rational regarding every aspect. That all of his decisions were purely intended by analyzing and thinking and not at all intuitively and impulsive. But to be honest, she feels intrigued by this new discovery and couldn’t deny herself a cheeky grin. “I know just the right dame - Wakako Okada. Runs a pachinko parlor on Jig-Jig street.” “We must pay this woman a visit. Will you join me?” „Sure.“ he smiles, too, “Thank you V” and starts the engine.
„Jazz, really?“ She asks as the radio starts playing and Takemura turns her car around, he shrugs “It is very calming. But change it to Rock or Night FM, I enjoy them too.“ “No, it’s fine.” They drive back through the tunnel. Takemura breaks the silence “So...Jig-Jig Street, what is this name?“ She dismisses the question with a wave of her hand „Just a Night City name.“ He frowns, “Beware you mock me...too often.” „Didn’t mean it like that, it’s really just how it is.“ "Mhm." The two of them ride in silence for a few minutes, while she thinks about the conversation they had with Oda. As Takemura has already confirmed to her, Oda has been his only friend and now - in hindsight - she can kinda understand why he even considers a suicide mission like the one they are going after, what choices does he have from his point of view?
“How are you feeling?” She interrupts the silence, “Fine. Why the sudden concern?“ “I am just asking. I mean we practically spent the last three days together, you are stranded here in Night City and just wondering how you feel.” „I apologize, that came off wrong. I am simply not used to questions like this. People like me...We either do well or we are in a grave. So it is not easy for me to talk about how I feel, especially when I do not feel so good.” She feels a sudden rush of compassion and affinity. The last hour they had talked more than in the last three days, had already gotten to know him better. They both do struggle in similar ways, she thinks.
Maybe if she opens up first it would be easier for him? “I know that feeling, it’s basically the same when you work as a corpo, well and as merc, here in NC. But you know what,I..." she hesitates for a second, this wasn't easy for her either "I feel like shit. I really do. I am dying, I have no plan whatsoever on how to stop this and I’m still grieving, even if I tell myself that everything is okay.” He waits a short time before responding “I feel like shit, too. I did not feel so powerless in decades. I do not know where to sleep, I am followed, need to blend in somehow, which is difficult as you might imagine. It...how would you say it...straight-up sucks, I wish I could delta.” She laughs. "But I am also grateful that you are here to support me V. That we share this mission." he adds. She quickly looks over at him, but his eyes remain on the road.
“So where will you be sleeping next then?” “I do not know. I can not go back to the No-Tell Motel. As I returned, the room was destroyed, searched. They are still looking for me.” V, please don’t. „You could use my apartment. I’m not even there most of the time and if I am, I’ve got a bed and a couch, hell we might even shoot them right there.” Takemura smiles lightly but shakes his head “No, V, I cannot accept this. You gave me so much already.” She turns in her seat. “You can and you will. You saved my life, helped me yesterday too. And as much as you need me...Well, I need you, too.” For a split second, his eyes wander from the road to hers, but she couldn't tell what is going on within them and he doesn’t say anything. Hastily she adds “And, you know, I still have to follow so many leads, for this biochip thing. I just have a feeling that Hanako will be definitely worth a shot.” “Mhm.” Takemura nods, “Thank you. I will consider your offer.”
Wakako is on the phone as they enter her office. Takemura follows V closely behind. “V, so nice to see you. And your charming friend is?” He steps forward and greets her in Japanese “Goro Takemura. The honor is mine Okada-San.“ „Haaa, a true gentleman you got there. He's not on the market right now by any chance?“ Takemura looks at V confused, she shrugs and answers her a little too snippy “Em, let’s just say no, he isn’t.” “What a shame. And shame that he is hunted by all the Arasaka tin soldiers. And you, V, ” she stands up leaning forward in her desk, her voice not at all sweet and welcoming anymore, “bring him to my door. Give me one good reason I am not calling the proper authorities.”
V walks ahead, sits on Wakakos desk and counter “if you would have intended to do that, you would have done it ten minutes ago, but you didn’t, because you know me. We come with biz and a good amount of Eddies plus you are curious and want to know what we have.” She sits back into her chair “Get off my desk!“ She hisses „But you are right. What do you want?“ V quickly jumps off her desk “Parade in Japantown, we need intel, schedules, maps whatever you have.“ She crosses her arms “Arasaka. Again. Why come to me? Didn’t Deshawn answer his phone?”
V looks at Takemura, he answers “He is deceased. Okada-san, our intentions are honorable. We need just information. It is a matter of life and death.” Wakako looks over to V „Here, it’s all on the shards.“ „How much?“ „It is free. For a favor.“ „So it’s actually not free.” “It’s free for you V, but not for our hitman here.” And she looks at Takemura “My pockets are empty.” He replies, “Clearly yes. A client of mine needs someone dead. Quite and quick. Do it and your debt is paid.” V doesn’t like this “I could just...” but Takemura interrupts her “Consider it done.” “Great, here the shard.”
V and Takemura look at the data and Wakako gives them all the intel they need. “That’s all I have. Be on your way.” „Thanks, Wakako.“ and they leave, walking down Jig-Jig street, back to Vs car. “This Information, it could be just what we need.” “Yea, but didn’t like the payment for it.” “I can handle it. Besides, I need to make money myself. I need to buy food myself.” She nods but hides her thoughts, that she still doesn’t think the deal is a good idea.
However, Takemura verbalizes them “Are you concerned about me?“ Looking at the dirty ground she replies, “Well, I can't deny it.” They arrive at her car. Takemura holds her back, by her arm “V, look at me.” She looks up and is amazed that he is smiling widely, as she hadn't seen before. “You doubt that I can properly fight without implants?” Caught off guard she opens her mouth but closes it again. “You have never seen me fighting, haven’t you?”
She slips onto her hood “Goro, look, no, I am sorry. I didn’t mean...” he walks closer to her, his smile was gone, his eyes sharp, expression cold, bulked up to his full height and arms folded.   “You underestimate me V? I should have known when you told me I do not intimidate you anymore." She felt intimidated again, but without a shred of fear. Much more, she could practically feel her pupils dilate at his sight. He continues, "But be grateful I consider you a friend or you will regret this one day.” She turns to him “Wait, are you mocking me now?!” He loosens up, holding onto the roof of her car, a cheeky grin on his face, “Oh, or can it be, you don’t want anything to happen to me before our date?” V joins in his smile. “So it is a date!” She exclaims. He chuckles, before walking around the car. “Maybe.” “You know what Goro, you are right, I think I underestimate you.”

the viktor vector romance path + ending we deserve
Disclaimer: This is definitely something I came up with in my head. There will be a few instances that are solely made up so it can tie in with the “story.” This is purely fictional; something I wished happened if there was a possible Vik romance 🥰 This is based on my general knowledge of the game & Vik’s life. All gifs + images are from my own personal play through, but wouldn’t be possible without the help of the Appearance Menu Mod, found on Nexus Mods by the creators, MaximiliumM and CtrlAltDaz. And the shirtless Vik mod by the lovely samsnak ♡
It would start after completing the Paid In Full quest where you pay Vik back the eddies you owe him.
I feel like realistically, the general player would have to be at least halfway through the story to have collected enough eddies. I would say that a good point in the story where we can begin the romance is that you’ve already established a connection to Alt and have dealt with the VDB’s.
I think it would be a short side quest like River’s. Vik already plays a big part in the story overall on his own, so I don’t think it’s necessary to make his “side quest” too long. His romance would just be an addition to the ending.
And as much as I would love for him to be a bisexual option for both male/female V, if we’re sticking with the game’s standard with limiting partners to only one kind of partner, he would only be romance-able by a female V with a feminine voice.
Tumblr media
V: Finally scrounged up enough eddies to pay you back in full.
Vik: Hold on to ‘em just in case - you need ‘em more than me.
V: I’m not taking them all the way to my grave, Vik. Here. And.. thanks again for doing so much work on me ‘thout ever seein’ an enny.
Vik: That’s what friends are for.
Then, there is an additional option for dialogue to trigger the romance path.
V: Friends? I think you’ve been in and out of my body more than anyone else I’ve hooked up with in Night City.
He laughs, with a coy smile. “Well, can’t argue with you there. Why don’t we take some of these eddies and grab a drink. You know, to celebrate. Catch up on old times. Haven’t seen you round here much lately, kid.”
You agree to meet at the El Coyote Cojo tomorrow evening.
You meet around 9 PM and you are welcomed by the sight of Pepe and Vik at the bar.
V: Nice choice of venue.
Vik: Thought you’d like it. Haven't been here since.. well, you know.
V: I miss him, Vik.
Vik: I know, V. Me too.
Tumblr media
You immediately take a seat and tinker with a few dialogue options, where you can either have a sweet moment talking about Jackie or some surface questions to ask, like how he’s doing, what kind of drink he likes, etc. But it all winds down to Jackie anyway, where Vik confides in you about his past. Judging by how Vik was so affected by Jackie’s death, and V’s (if you chose the suicide ending), you can tell that he has lost a lot in his life, and keeps his circle very small.
Tumblr media
You then achieve an even closer, more personal relationship with him. But, ultimately nothing happens other than the usual, wait 24 hours in game for a text/phone call from Vik to head into the next stage. At least now, you have established the foundation for a future romance.
Halfway through the 24 hour period, you get a text from Vik thanking you for the lovely evening. No reply needed, as he calls you once the 24 hour mark hits and invites you out for another date.
Tumblr media
You meet at Tom’s Diner for coffee in the afternoon. It starts off with him apologizing for being emotional the previous night and asks if you’re open to hanging out again and going down to Pacifica to watch a fight with him.
Vik: Hey, V. I just wanted to apologize about last night. I didn’t mean to be such a downer.
V: It’s okay, Vik. We share the same grief.
Vik: I was going to head down to Pacifica and catch a real good match later on today. I was wondering if you’d like to come along, think it’d be great for the both of us, you know, as a distraction.
pssst even Johnny’s rooting for y’all ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Johnny: Hmm, interesting.
V: What?
Johnny: Never thought you'd be going out with this guy.
V: Vik's amazing. And I mean--we basically owe it to him since he practically saved our life.
Johnny: Don't tell me you're going out with him out of pity.
V: I'm not.
Johnny: I know, I can feel you get all mushy-gushy. It's almost repulsive. Just wanted to hear you admit it.
V: Eat a dick, Johnny.
Tumblr media
You arrive before the GIM and blend into the crowd.
V: Nothin’ like watching guys beat the shit out of each other to get your blood pumpin’, huh?
Vik: This is a real good matchup, V. This kid’s fresh, young talent.
V: You miss it, don’t you?
Before the fight begins, Vik shares a story about his time in the ring and coming in second in the Watson Boxing Grand Prix.
There’s some extra fun options in the dialogue, you can bet some eddies on who’s gonna win, or side with him. The fight ends, and you two head outside.
Since you’re already out in Pacifica, you head over to the boardwalk (where you would ride the roller coaster with Johnny) and he starts telling you about the last days of his boxing career and how he transitioned from the sport to being a ripperdoc.
Tumblr media
You both share a sweet moment with each other, reminiscing about old times and talking about V’s future with the relic. This is where I would see Vik confessing how he feels about you, mentioning how grateful he is for Jackie introducing you to him.
Tumblr media
The evening ends and Vik asks you to give him some time to try and dig up some footage from his storage and have you come over to watch. You can kiss him then wait another 24 in game hours before the last quest. Halfway through, he texts you and asks you what you’d like for dinner. You can opt for pizza or chinese.
I haven’t seen or read anything about how or where Vik lives. If I overlooked something, please let me know! But for the sake of the story, let’s say he does actually have his own place that’s now introduced in the game. Personally, I think he has a typical bachelor pad, like a really nice apartment. Not too far from his clinic either. He looks like he would just walk to work. Vik definitely has a lot of money, but he’s so humble I doubt he would choose to live lavishly. As mentioned in the beginning, he typically just “sleeps nights” ever since he was over “being a legend” so I’m guessing his lifestyle is very routine. He goes to work, goes home, sleep. Seems unlikely he has a place like the Peralez’s. It would probably be just the same as V’s but decorated to his taste.
The evening comes and you are over at his place. He’s dressed in just a white undershirt, no exo-glove. You get to know more about his family, how he grew up — scanning things around his place. Then he plays some footage of one of his fights for you, while you two have a conversation and share a beer. As you two sit on the couch, you get close, then have an opportunity to kiss him.
then this is where da sex happen hihihi (ノ・ω・)ノ
Tumblr media
The next morning you wake up and you two have a heartfelt conversation about where this is going. He already knows your situation, so I would assume he is very accepting and supportive. And with Vik, he seems like the kind of guy who would still want to be in your life and keep the friendship the same way despite no longer being together romantically. So it’s official. He’s your man 🥵 !!11!1!
Like how River gives you the “fuck the police” tank top after sleeping with him, I think Vik would give you his Night City Devils t-shirt that provides you with a significant amount of armor or some kind of cyberware upgrade that makes you invulnerable for a brief moment while using your hands to fight enemies.
Note: I was thinking of Vik giving V his boxing glove necklace, but because it's part of his character's appearance in the game, I don't think we would be able to essentially "take it" from him - unless he gives you a replica as a keepsake. Which I think would also work.
If you successfully romance, during the rooftop scene near the end of Nocturne OP55N1 (despite Vik’s disposition of him telling you to take matters in your own hands and being a little closed off), you still have an option to reach out to him when Johnny advises you to call a loved one.
V: Hey, Vik. I just wanted to say, thanks for hanging with me, until the end.
Vik: Quit talking like it is, V. Just do what you need to do.
V: I mean, think of it. It’s like I’m heading into the last round of this whole thing.
Vik: Well, in that case.. remember—keep your hands up, guarded at all times. It ain’t over just yet.
V: Heh.. I can feel it, just a few more punches.
Vik: Now look at you - the new welterweight champ of Night City.
V: Thanks, coach.
Vik: Last piece of advice from the coach's corner. Just.. be careful, kid. Remember, I’m with you.
Okayyyy, soooo I’m not the biggest fan of how CDPR gave us two of the same endings (Path of Glory). The only difference is that Rogue’s life is spared. I would have assumed that not only would we get to keep Rogue around, things should have played a bit more differently for V if we took the route of going solo against the corpos. So let’s tweak it.
Tumblr media
This specific ending; it should be after getting through Don’t Fear The Reaper where you single-handedly manage to rip through Arasaka by yourself. Johnny goes back to Alt & Rogue is still alive. Yes nobody dies!!!
(honestly this ending can apply to any love interest you choose)
Vik and V are now living together in a lavish penthouse, entertaining an upcoming merc to do their work for them (which is now the current POV of the player.) You were recruited by Rogue at the Afterlife, who told you to visit this couple for a real, preem job.
They give you some vague details about the gig and go on for a brief moment about what you will be doing and what you should expect. Vik emphasizes to you that it’s important you get what they need because it’s for his wife, V, as her life depends on it.
As Never Gonna Fade Away is playing in the background, they tell you to break into Arasaka HQ.
Tumblr media
Then the game officially ends.

Curious but, perhaps new Vegas Companions reacting to The courier and their “attempts for the blue star treasure” as the courier call it but no it’s obviously an addition to the sodas in the wasteland.
The courier popped the cap off the bottle, flicked it aside with their finger and drank deeply, finishing the swallow off with a theatrical sigh. "So there I am in Primm, and I've just finished breaking Deputy Beagle out of his bind with the convicts in the Bison Steve Hotel, and he insists on throwing a party at the Vikki & Vance to celebrate. Ruby, gem that she is, hands me a bottle of this stuff and plays it coy about the taste, so I crack it open and there's a blue star underneath the cap. Never seen that before, or at least I don't remember seeing it before, but this guy next to us at the bar gets all excited. Says his name is Malcolm, used to collect the caps with stars, something about a secret, pre-war treasure... sounded like a lure for suckers, but then I come across these two dead travelers outside Nipton that look like they died in a scuffle over the damn things."
They gestured at the full crate of Sunset Sarsaparilla on the counter of the 188 Slop & Shop, which they had just shelled out 100 caps for. "Anyways, now I pick it up whenever I run into it. The Sierra Madre might be a myth, but with stuff like this, you never know. Right?"
Arcade Gannon: Arcade rolled his eyes. "Just what we need. Another reason for someone to track us down and try to kill us."
"Would I ever put you in danger?" the courier asked, rather facetiously.
Arcade pinched the bridge of his nose. "Just promise me we aren't going to get shot over collectibles, and I won't say another word."
"I... cannot promise that."
"Okay." Arcade plucked a bottle of sarsaparilla from the crate and scanned its label. "Carbonated water... well, not anymore... pure cane sugar, of course... yadda yadda yadda... oh, and criminal amounts of safrole. You should not be drinking this."
The courier shrugged. "I've had worse."
Arcade shook the bottle at them. "This will give you cancer."
"Arcade, I've been shot in the head."
"Which explains why you're still drinking it." Arcade tried to grab the open sarsaparilla away from the courier, but they pulled back out of his reach and playfully squared up. "Fine!" he said, throwing his hands up and walking away from the bar.
Craig Boone: Boone watched the courier for a minute, observing the way they were drinking the soda with excessive relish. Finally, he eased a bottle out of the crate and held it up to the sunlight. The courier eyed him suspiciously as he examined it, and they made a small noise of reproach when he twisted its top off.
"No star," he said, holding the cap up so they could see.
As he had expected, the courier barely glanced at the bottlecap and instead focused on the soda itself, which was fizzing slightly. Boone tilted the bottle to and fro, watching with amusement as their eyes followed its path.
When he finally took a sip, the courier groaned and went back to their own bottle.
Lily Bowen: "But dearie, that much soda will rot your teeth!" Lily protested. "Grandma hasn't been able to find you a new toothbrush yet. Why not take the soda home and save it for a special occasion?"
The courier held their bottle of sarsaparilla up in a toast. "Lily, with you, every occasion is special."
"Aww, pumpkin." Lily blushed and squeezed herself onto a stool. "That's very sweet of you. But only two bottles before we move on, okay? We take the rest home."
In response, the courier pulled another bottle out of the crate and slid it over to the super mutant. "Make it three, and you can have this one."
"Dearie, you know I'm watching my figure!"
The courier laughed. "I know, I know. We'll work it off. Go on, all yours."
"Hmmph." Lily picked up the bottle and turned it around, examining the label. "Like nightkin and Stealth Boys, you are."
She twisted the top off, and the two made noises of pleasant surprise at the discovery of a blue star on the bottom of the cap.
Raul Alfonso Tejada: "You've got to be careful with that stuff, boss," Raul opined, sliding onto an empty stool and eyeing the crate suspiciously.
"What, because of the treasure hunters?"
"Ay, no." The ghoul shook his head. "El refresco. Don't know what they put in it, but half the continent used to drink it. That stuff spread faster than Nuka-Cola, and Nuka-Cola knew it. Tried to buy Sunset, then when that didn't work, they tried to make their own version."
The courier perked up at that. "Nuka-Cola made sarsaparilla? I've never seen it."
"Me neither, but I've heard tell it's out there." Raul sighed and leaned over the counter, arms crossed. "Nuka-Buzz, or something? No, no, it'll come to me... Wild. Nuka-Cola Wild."
"Huh." The courier took another swig of the soda, clearly trying to cover up their sudden interest. "Know where I might get some?"
"Nah." Raul looked at them sideways. "But you're not gonna find any star caps on them anyway, right?"
"Oh yeah. Right."
"Híjole, Six. You've got a problem."
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Uh, no? No, I know exactly what's up with stuff like this." Cass put her hands on her hips and glared at the courier. "Sam and Michelle just took you for a ride on those things, that's what's up. How many're in there, 24 bottles? Fewer at the rate you're suckin' 'em down, but 100 caps for 24 bottles is downright criminal. Over four caps per head, and you're not even getting a decent return of 24 caps if you're saving the ones with little blue stars on them! But let's be honest here, Six."
The courier threw a hand out in defensive exasperation. "I am being honest, Cass! It's for a-"
"Mmm, uh-uh." Cass shook her head violently and crossed her arms. "You're not that stupid, you have decent enough business sense from what I've seen. What you've got going is the same song and dance I do when the bartender's pouring generous rounds. Just own it, Six."
"Oh come on, that's not the same-"
"I don't wanna hear it." Cass hopped onto a stool and shoved the crate of soda as far away from her as she could get it. "Sam, get back here and bring me a glass of something that'll put me in a more forgiving mood. On their tab."
Veronica Santangelo: "Wrong." Veronica sighed and sat down next to the courier. "You know how far we are from the Strip?"
"Not really?"
"Give or take a few, 26 miles." The Scribe frowned. "Meaning, if you want to drag that crate home with you, we have to carry it 26 miles through the desert, protecting it from cazadores, coyotes, Fiends, and if your story's at all true, rabid treasure hunters. I don't know about you, but I'm not about to risk my life for a box of flat sarsaparilla."
"But it's not flat." The courier handed her their drink to inspect. "Not completely. I don't know where Michelle dug it up, but she found a good batch."
"I don't know," Veronica replied, peering down the bottle's neck. "Can't really tell without getting a better look. What if I..."
She made as if to pour the soda out onto the ground, and the courier squeaked and tried to grab it back. Veronica held it out of their reach and smirked. "So it's not really about the caps, is it? Because if it was, we could just empty these all and save ourselves the trouble of hauling it."
"Veronica, please."
"Fine." Veronica handed the drink back. "But I want three bottles for myself. You can keep the caps."
ED-E: ED-E beeped in general agreement with the courier's story and accepted the new load, lowering itself slightly so they could pack up the bottles. By the time the courier was done, the bottle they had been drinking was empty. With a shrug, the courier pocketed the cap- starless, ED-E noted- and plucked another from the crate, causing the eyebot to bob and adjust.
Rex: The cyberdog sniffed the bottle the courier offered them and sneezed, narrowly missing the contents. They snatched it back with a chuckle and went on drinking. Rex curled up at the base of their stool, yawned, and went to sleep. By the time he woke up again, the crate was down to 20 full bottles, and the courier was giggly from the pre-war sugar.

ValVarez headcanons pt 1
Here are Judy/Fem!V (or ValVarez as I have started calling them in my head) headcanons that kind of took on a narrative, and then kind of lost the plot along the way. These were the result of possibly the worst migraine of my life. I needed a distraction, so I started typing up some headcanons I thought of for the streetkid!V I was playing at the time, and then kept expanding it until I could finally fall asleep.
I will try say there are some spoilers for the game in here, and I will try to hide them under the fold or whatever. None of this is likely unique at this point, so if anything feels like it should be in your fic, have at it. Will be at least two parts after I realized just how much I had typed up during the migraine.
Something is off about this Merc. She isn't posturing, or boasting - she doesn't even seem to be wearing clothes that fit. When she speaks Judy can reluctantly admit that she does so without even a trace of guile.
The merc - V - is a BD virgin. Judy was confused about this turn, to say the least. Not many make it to her age, or at least as old as V appears to be, without at least making use of an educational BD.
Judy has never seen someone as strong as V, or at least, not someone with 'ganic limbs. Even the Animals probably haven't put as much steroid-free effort into their body as V clearly has. Judy has a lot of opportunity to admire her while V is in the test BD.
Evelyn has to convince V not to bolt from the chair the second the trial BD concludes. The merc shifts with anxious energy, looking a little green around the gills, and any doubts Judy had that V may have been lying about being a BD virgin go right out the window. She is intrigued, despite herself.
A netrunner is brought in, and Judy spends the whole of the Konpeki BD scowling at her monitors.
Not many people say "Thank you" in Night City. Somehow it fits that V, the big bad merc that she is, makes a point to say thanks despite how nauseas the BD experience has clearly made her. Maybe it was a mistake to give her that BD wreath.
Evelyn thinks she's sweet, and Judy is all too quick to remind her of her terrible judgement when it comes to people. Present company excluded of course.
Judy thinks this is all a terrible idea. Capable or not, nothing good can come from putting faith in the candid merc. Evie insists that V is an adorable murder machine regardless.
Judy was right in the end. She wasn't happy about it though. Not when Evelyn went back to Clouds a few days later.
V is back, Evelyn is missing, and they need each other right now. Judy doesn't have to like it.
It was terrifying to watch V work. Like a switch flipped and all of the restless, shifting energy she returned from wherever-the-fuck with was exchanged for focus.
V is uncommonly fast as well as strong, apparently. Her blade sings through the air with merciless precision, and her footsteps only make noise when she wants them to. V is is like a vengeful specter, and Judy is glad they're on the same side.
V enjoys her work, and seems more alive than ever leaving a trail of scav bodies behind her. She also stops to check every broken and discarded corpse along the way to make sure it isn't Evie's so that Judy doesn't have to.
After they rescue Evelyn and bring her safely to Judy's apartment, Judy realizes she can still hear the echoes of screams and gunfire left over from the rescue. She can't feel an ounce of remorse even now, hours after V sent heads and limbs flying as they hacked their way to Evelyn.
Judy is grateful to V for the care she's shown. For listening to Judy's direction in the scroller den, for saving Evelyn's interrogation for another day despite how desperate she was to find the Doll when they first made contact. For the first time, Judy feels ashamed of her snap judgement of V. Yes, her clothes never match or even fit her on any of the occasions they've interacted, and yeah, she has personally watched V pick up a discarded can of Chromanticore and finish it off, but she is also kinder than anyone Judy has met in years.
Evelyn is dead, and V is the only one she can call. V who is terrible with words but somehow knows exactly what to say to help Judy focus on the important things. She's helpful, and trying so hard to keep them both together.
V distracts her when the badges come. Tells her about meeting Jackie - how he shoved a gun in her face, then brought her home for lunch a few hours later. By the time they leave Judy isn't in cuffs, so the distraction must have helped.
Judy begins making plans. Wallowing in sadness never helped anyone in this city.
She's getting the feeling that V may have a crush on her. She also gets the feeling that V didn't like whatever she found while snooping on Maiko's comp, if the line of not-subtle-at-all questions as they leave are any indication.
They kill Woodman, and Judy doesn't feel any better. V tries her best to help, and it's the earnestness that Judy once found so off-putting that helps more than the words themselves.
V checks in on Judy in between jobs. She sends pictures from the Badlands that she thinks Judy would like to see. Judy ignores the way it bothers her to see some other woman in the background of more than a few.
Maiko makes it clear that she doesn't want the "freak merc" anywhere near this revolution. Judy is extra pleased to inform her that V is a vital, non-negotiable part of the mission.
V is dying, and Judy feels like someone pulled the rug out from under her. She thought V was being dramatic the first time she said so, but now she knows better. V falls asleep on her couch while Judy tells her about the unsuccessful line of BD blooper reels Sue had her work on a few months back.
V invites Judy to El Coyote Cojo a few days later for dinner. Rather, she invites Judy to Mama Welles's place for dinner, because V can't cook to save her life.
Mama Welles has endless stories about V and Jackie's misadventures. Judy is impressed that neither of them ended up in jail based on the amount of times they've had to pull each other out of the fire. By the end of the night, Mama Welles insists Judy call her when she needs to.
Sometimes, on a particularly bad night, Judy idly wonders how many people V has murdered that day. It seems she is always finding trouble to get into the middle of even just walking down the street. She doesn't want a number, but on very bad days it comforts her to know that if nothing else, they all at least had it coming. Maybe the world is a little bit better because V is in it, doing her thing.
V disappears without a trace for a few days. No pictures, no texts, not even a blip on the street about that sword wielding merc jumping into save some random citizens from gang violence. Judy tries not to worry but ends up going through a whole pack of cigs anyway.
Judy ends up calling Mama Welles who reassures her that V is probably just sick. V gets sick a lot with the way she eats whatever she finds but it's a habit they've not been able to break. Judy still can't reach V on the holo, but she does get an invite to dinner so she at least has company in her worry.
When V reappears, she is only slightly worse for wear and closed off about her whereabouts. Rumors start to surface about a massacre in a Pacifica church, and Judy doesn't ask.
Despite Maiko's best efforts, Clouds is liberated. Judy visits Evelyn's niche to tell her it's done, and finds V has left her cigarette case there.
Judy begins planning something new.
Judy gets a call from V, but not V. Panam on V's holo, the woman in the background of the photos. Panam is rude, but seems terrified and keeps going off on tangents about how V doesn't even have a security pin on her holo. "Doesn't she realize how dangerous it is when anyone can just access all her shit if she loses it?"
V is getting worse, and Judy feels helpless when all she can really tell Panam is to let V sleep it off. Panam thanks Judy for "being so helpful, truly appreciate the insight." If Judy weren't so sure Panam was V's output, she would admire how much "Fuck you" the feisty woman managed to inject into every syllable.
V stops by late the next day and apologizes for Panam. Judy suspects it's on Panam's advice when V not-so-subtly insists, on six separate occasions during the visit, that she and Panam are just friends.
Later, Panam calls Judy herself and apologizes. Judy makes a joke about V surrounding herself with temperamental women, which sets off teasing on Panam's followed by bickering between the nomads Judy wasn't aware could hear them chatting. She thinks she understands what V sees in Panam, now. It must feel like coming home, having to pull Panam out of the fires she creates after losing Jackie.
Judy invites V to Laguna Bend, and aside from V nearly drowning, the evening is perfect.

A Few of my OCs
These are a few of my random OCs, some have backstories, some don’t. Haven’t really decided what to do with a few of the outside of CC. But I wanted to share them!
ALL OCs UNDER THE CUT
LEVI
Tumblr media
Levi currently doesn’t have a backstory, just a name. I believe he was going to be an ex-corpo? I don’t know. I made him and fell in love with this design, a lot. I hope to remake him soon and actually find clothes that fit his style and figure out his life more!
NAME TO BE DETERMINED
Tumblr media
This is my nomad/ex-nomad. I’m stuck between the names Vera, Viktoria and Valera. She grew up in the nomad life but ran away as a teen wanting a different life. She hated constantly travelling. Whenever she loved a place, the clan had to leave. She escaped to Night City while they stayed in the Badlands there and made a name and life for her there.
When she’s paired with Panam with a gig by the Almighty Rogue, she realizes how much she missed having people that loved and cared for her, seeing how Mitch, Scorpion and even Saul worried and cared for Panam.
The story of her scar is undeveloped but it was from a fight. Not sure what yet! Also, I plaaaaaan to possibly have her paired with Saul... I don’t know why. Just because.
IRIS
Tumblr media
Iris is a corpo, working up high within Arasaka with Yorinobu. She acts as a personal bodyguard when they go out and have also had some... relations, if you know what I mean. I personally pair her with Goro Takemura, and they meet prior to the beginning of CP77. When Saburo is killed, Yorinobu convinces her that Takemura had involvement in it, and completely cuts all ties and contact with him.
When V and Takemura need help and Oda wasn’t willing to listen, Takemura hopes that Iris will help... but things don’t originially go as planned...
THALIA
Tumblr media
This is Thalia, my current obsession. She was born to wealthy parents, growing up in Westbrook, around Charter Hill. She was destined to become like her parents and follow in their footsteps and Thalia didn’t want that life, so she ran away. She ended up at El Coyote Cojo, meeting Jackie and Mama Welles and becoming apart of their family.
Thalia, after she turned 18, began selling her body to pay bills. She started on Jig-Jig Street, moving to work at Lizzie’s for a few months, making a few BDs and then back to the streets. Thalia became a very, very well known JoyToy and made her prices higher and higher once she got better implants.
Jackie and Mama Welles never knew about what Thalia did as a job until she showed up at the Coyote with a busted lip, a black eyes and sobbing. She was used to clients being rough, and paying more for that, but this was farther than she ever went.
Jackie and Mama Welles tried to help her get a job that didn’t involve selling her body, but it was all she’s known for the last ten years of her life. The last straw for them was when the same client followed Thalia into the Coyote after she denied him service and she left his apartment. Mama Welles threatened him, chased him out of her bar... and Jackie later that evening paid him an unexpected visit to his apartment...

A Familiar World
Bewitched ——————————————-
The adventures of Theodore continue. Figuring out how he feels about what he saw in town is... well. Difficult. But he’s gotta make a decision sometime. Featuring fun times with his siblings and a not-so-fun time with his parents.
The masterpost for AFW can be found here. The chapter post for AFW can be found here.
——————————————-
i am once again cutting chapters up, but that’s ok!!! i’m having fun and getting to write these dynamics is rlly interesting! hopefully the next one’ll be a lil shorter, but we’ll see X] in the meantime, here’s this!
and uh, warning for journal getting into a fight with his parents (nothing physical, but there’s some gaslighting to be mindful of)
The sun shone brightly down on the farm, a light breeze rustling the remains of cornstalks in the field. The wagon- still half full of harvest- was parked next to the barn. A thick cloth blanket kept its cargo protected from the elements. At least, mostly. The horses in the nearby pasture eyed the visible corn wistfully. But besides the horses, crops, and breeze, not much was moving outside. The morning chores were long done. Now was the time for relaxing and play. From the giggling and shouting from the barn, a certain group of siblings was taking advantage of that. Up in the hayloft, Theodore and his younger siblings were fooling around. The twins were wrestling in the loose hay, and Elise was busy trying to climb up one of the support beams. Theodore had draped himself across another beam, square over the middle of the loft. His eyes flicked cautiously towards the edge every so often- but he’d be ok. He’d fallen and tumbled into the hay enough to know it would catch him much gentler than the barn’s dirt floor. He had other things to focus on at the moment, anyway. A beat up journal sat in front of him, chock full of loose papers and ink-stained scraps. They stuck out the sides and from under the cover. With all the story ideas, memories, and thoughts crammed into it, it was a wonder the book was still together. He’d have to get a new one soon. But for now, his quill scratched away at the page before him. He’d been working hard on recording every detail he could about the other day’s encounter. He felt as if he’d seen something precious- something more astounding than any legend- and he refused to let it slip from his mind. Writing this down needed his undivided attention. Of course, his siblings thought otherwise. “Hey, Theo! Y’all gonna come down from there?” Nilo called, arm locked around Tyler’s neck. Tyler squirmed and pushed at him playfully. “I think Tyler could use yer help!” “Naw, I do not! Yer about ta need ‘em though!” Tyler snickered. With a sudden jerk, the boy threw himself against the hay, sending Nilo toppling over his shoulder. The two laughed and jeered as they scrambled around, but Theodore didn’t pay them much mind. “Mmh, yea, uh, jus a sec,” he mumbled, eyes scanning over his work. He felt like he’d gotten the stranger’s routine written out ok. But he just couldn’t capture the strange smoke they’d been messing with. Not smoke, his mind muttered, magic. The word sent a zing down to his fingertips. He couldn’t tell if it was good or bad. Last week, he would’ve firmly said bad. But now, he just… wasn’t sure. It honestly felt more like a thrill. As if he were staring down a wolf, but it was crouched and wagging like a playful dog. Oh, good simile, he thought, hastily scribbling it in the journal’s margins, I’ll have to use that somewhere later. He propped himself up on his elbows, glancing over the page. Almost full… would he have to cordon off a whole new section of his personal records for this? He wouldn’t mind, it was just… well, buying new ones could get expensive… A voice behind him knocked him out of his thoughts. “Hey, earth ta’ scribbles! Y’all alive?!” Theodore pulled a face- scribbles??? What???- glancing around for the offending speaker. Elise sat on a beam across from him, kicking her legs. Her smirk and little giggles confirmed it had been her. Theodore stared at her for a minute. “... what did y’all jus call me?” he asked. “Scribbles,” Elise snickered, “y’all like it?” “Aw- hell no,” Theodore snorted, shaking his head. He set his quill down, shifting to face her better. “Awful. Try again, lil lady.” “Well y’all weren’t answerin to theo!” she huffed. “Or theodore!” Tyler piped up from below him. Nilo nodded, picking bits of hay out of his hair. “Or anythin’ el- AUGH-” Whatever else he was going to say got lost as Tyler tackled him into the hay again. Theodore and Elise just exchanged a look. “If y’all’re gonna call me a nickname, call me somethin else,” he said. “Scribbles? C’mon, y’all can do better’n that.” “Hmm… m’kay,” Elise nodded slowly. “I think I got a couple ideas…” The corners of her mouth twitched mischievously. Theodore knew that look. Oh boy. How big of a mistake did I jus make? “How ‘booout… inky?” She said, blinking innocently as he tried not to smile. “Elise, tha’s even worse!” he replied. “Mmm alphabet soup?” she smirked. “Oh- revaew no-” Theodore guffawed, shaking his head. “Awful. Try again.” “Ah, I got it!” Elise clapped her hands together, grin as wide as a river. “Quillface!” Such was the name that broke Theodore’s composure. He lost it, clinging tightly to the beam below him to stop from falling off. Oh Revaew- yeah, he’d made a mistake alright. Nilo and Tyler quit tussling in confusion. Through teary eyes, Theodore could see them look to Elise for explanation. He couldn’t manage to get out more than a few wheezing “no, don’t-”s before her haughty grin passed its verdict. “Theodore’s new nickname is quillface,” she declared proudly. “QUILLFACE?!” Tyler shrieked, his shrilly voice dissolving into giggles. Nilo wasn’t too far behind, cracking a delighted smile. “I think it fits!” Nilo beamed. “It’s an attention grabber if I ever heard one!” “We- we oughta tell dean ‘n carrie-” Tyler wheezed. “Oh, of course! Everyone’s gotta know about Theo’s new name!” Elise grinned. “ABSOLUTELY NOT!” Theodore squawked, sputtering between bouts of laughter. He waved a hand to gather their attention, doing his best to breathe through his cackling. “Y’all are not gonna call me quillface, good revaew-” “Then what’dya want us to call you, huh?” Tyler teased. “Y’all gotta give us somethin to work with,” Nilo said. “I gave ya plenty’a options!” Elise chimed in, crossing her arms in mock offense. “Listen- y’all want a nickname? Fine, fine,” Theodore sighed. “Y’all can call me… uhh…” He glanced around for a moment. His eyes fell on his record book. He’d been needing a pseudonym for awhile now. And he… did like the idea of a writer-esque name mashed with “Drapht.” Something with a nice ring to it. Something like… He snapped, a bright grin rising to his face. “Journal!” he hummed, “y’all can call me journal.” “Journal?” Elise echoed, blinking. “... i mean, y’all were writin in that thing all mornin,” Nilo said. “And y’all’re what ya do, I guess,” Tyler shrugged. “Guess we should call you two punchy ‘n kicks then, eh? With all’a’y’all’s horseplay?” Theodore joked. The twins both clamored to protest, missing the obvious irony in the fact that they were still somewhat tangled up in the hay. And how they proved the point by dissolving back into tussling. Theodore settled back down on his beam, one foot dangling lazily. Yeah. That was about right. He reached for his quill, shifting to face his records once again. “Aw- c’mon, Theo! We wanna play!” Elise whined. He glanced over at her, a brow raised. “I’m here, ain’t I? I’m busy!” “Busy bein boring. What’re y’all writin in there thas’ so important anyway?” Elise huffed. Theodore opened his mouth to retort, but the words died in his throat. Wait. Could he tell them what happened the other day? Should he tell them? His parents hadn’t said no, but… well… “... Journal? Hellooooo?” Elise called, waving a hand. He blinked, shaking himself back to reality. “What was that? Y’all keepin secrets?” “Uh- not- not exactly-” he stammered, trying to cover his tracks. But his smile was lopsided, and his jerky movements too obvious. Elise’s eyes glimmered eagerly. “Ohoho… y’all’re keepin secrets,” she grinned. “Elise- no-” “Nilo!!! Tyler!!! Yer brother’s keepin secrets!!!” she cackled. The twins looked up immediately, perked up like coyotes in a chicken coop. Oh revaew. With the three of them staring him down, he really had no choice. “... well… uh… oh, fine,” Theodore sighed. “Jus keep it quiet, m’kay?” “O’course.” “Wouldn’t think otherwise!” “Y’all can count on it.” “Ok, good.” Theodore glanced towards the barn doors. No movement. No sound. Just the breeze and the sun beating down on the dirt. When he looked back to his siblings, they were busy nudging and giggling at each other, eager as ever for storytime. Alright. Yeah. This was ok. Shifting to sit upright, he clapped his hands together. They all sat to attention, eyes gleaming and gazes fixed on him. “... so… y’all remember the other day we were at town? An’ we had to leave early?” Theodore started. When he got a nod, he continued. “Well, somethin’ happened at the town outskirts ta’ make ma ‘n pa freak out so bad. And I was there. Y’see, there was a stranger who blew in, an’ they were doin somethin’ real interestin at the edge’a town...”
~~~
The sun had moved across the sky, almost right atop the barn, before movement reigned again. The twins burst out of the barn with fistfuls of hay, shouting as they tossed them at each other. Theodore was still up in the hayloft with Elise- she was having trouble getting down from the beam. Theodore tucked his journal into its little nook in the wall, setting the loose boards back into place. Elise was still chattering about his story as he turned towards a pile of bales. “-and mom jus yanked ya all the way back ta the cart?” she was asking, eyes wide. “Mhm,” Theodore nodded. He grunted as he tugged a bale of hay over. Scrambling on top of it, he reached up for his sister’s hands. “She was madder’n a trampled rattler. ‘M really not sure why, though. The stranger wasn’ hurtin nobody.” “Yeah, but… they were a magic user,” Elise said hesitantly. “Ma ‘n pa said they’re bad, right?” She shimmied her way down into Theodore’s arms. He let out a soft “oof” as she dropped, but he got her to hit the hay softly. “That… yeah, that’s what they say,” Theodore admitted. “... just… I dunno. I don’t think somethin so intricate ‘n beautiful could be that bad. Ma ‘n pa didn’ say people could do stuff like th’ stranger did with magic. They jus said it’ll make ya inta a lazy monster. I doubt someone lazy would be doin alla those flips.” “And yer sure ya didn’ see any claws or fangs?” Elise asked. He nodded without a thought. “I didn’ see nothin,” he assured her. “But- well, we don’ need to think too hard about it. They’re gone now. I jus thought it was neat.” “Fair ‘nuff,” Elise shrugged. She grabbed a fistful of hay on her way towards the ladder, humming happily to herself. Theodore followed after her, waiting at the top as she climbed down. She looked up at him once her feet hit the floor. “Y’all better hurry down ‘re yer gonna miss the fun this time!” she hollered, waving her handful of hay. Theodore laughed, carefully maneuvering himself over the ladder. “I will, I will! Jus gimme a minute!” he called back. “Scaredy cat!!!” Elise jeered. “Y’all wouldn’ say that if ya fell off the loft like I have!” he shot back. Taking a breath, he stuck one leg off the loft, feeling for the ladder. He didn’t move again until he had a good foothold. He slid himself down to get his hands around the sides, grabbing on tight as his other foot fumbled for the wooden slats. Only once his whole weight was held did he exhale. He sat there for a second just to make sure. Good. Ok. He was ok. Now he just had to scurry on down. All was going well until a sharp voice cut through the cheerful laughs outside. Theodore didn’t notice it at first. He was too busy lowering foot after foot, hand after hand, not wanting to take his eyes off the ladder. Almost down, almost down. He had this. Or, he thought he did. “THEODORE SHERMAN DRAPHT!” The name- his name- was bellowed loud enough to snatch his attention away from the ladder. His head whipped up, body tensing up enough to jerk his grip off of the wood. For one terrifying second, gravity seemed to drag his body away. Theodore’s hands shot out like lightning, snatching the wood so hard he knew he’d given himself splinters. But he didn’t care. He was too busy wondering what he’d done. He glanced skittishly toward the barn doors. A shadow darkened them, hands settled on hips, shoulders hiked up and tense. He knew that pose. Just like he knew the shout that followed it. “THEODORE, GET OUT HERE THIS INSTANT!” Ah. His mother. Theodore felt his stomach settling like a rock in the sea as he hurriedly finished his descent. Oh revaew. What happened now?
Theodore stood in his parents’ room, spine straight and hands clasped behind his back. His shoulders were squared, and he dared not reach his twitching fingers up to smooth his hair down. Even if the rather rough trip in here skewed it all over. And sorting it out would soothe him. He couldn’t move. His father’s disapproving gaze was more paralyzing than any snakebite. That, and he was just trying to last in the burning fury of his mother’s berating. “-came out to see Tyler and Nilo throwing hay at each other with some- some- dirty sorcerer’s words- trying to practice magic on my farm-” she was spitting, gaze searing as a brand. He squirmed a bit, doing his best to keep his eyes on her. It was hard. His gaze flitted across the room every time her voice raised. And when she was angry, she always spoke loud. He waited until she took a breath to pipe up. “I’m- I’m sorry, ma,” he tried, “I didn’ think it’d be a big deal-” “Of course you didn’t,” his mother snapped. “You don’t think about anything.” He winced at that, unable to keep his gaze from skittering to the floorboards. That’s- that wasn’t true. He did think. He’d dithered over telling his siblings for at least a day or two. Even now, he’d only told when they found him out. His fists clenched as his mother continued. “What have we told you about how dangerous magic is?! About how not to let it spread?!” “I- y’all said it’s bad fer us,” he mumbled, “bad fer everyone, a-an we should stay away.” “Exactly. An’ that shoulda been the end of it,” his mother snarled. “So why in the hell were y’all tellin yer siblings about what y’all saw in town?!” “I- it didn’- I jus- they- w-we were jus-” “What’ve we told you about thinking your sentences through before you speak?” his father sighed. Theodore clamped his mouth shut. Think, don’t just stammer, y’all oughta know better, he chided himself. He took a shaky breath, trying not to focus on how his mother’s foot tapped, and his father’s fingers drummed. Eventually, he forced his eyes to meet theirs again. “It… It didn’ look like magic t’me,” he explained slowly. “There was nothin threatenin. I didn’ even realize it was magic till the stranger said so.” “You… didn’t realize it was magic?” his mother echoed, disbelief dripping off her tongue. “N-no, ma’am,” he mumbled. He felt his cheeks grow hot as she scoffed. “Like- Like I said, I didn’ see anythin scary, ‘er any’a the stuff you’n pa said to look out for.” No darkness. No laziness. No monsters. No traps or snares or brambles. Nothing like what they’d been drilling into him since he could crawl. Just someone having fun flipping around and making towers of golden smoke. Which, yeah, that was magic. He believed it. But why in Revaew’s wide world did their description of “magic” not line up? Not one thing they’d told him to sniff out magic had helped him in town. It wasn’t even remotely scary. What right did they have to drag him from a danger that wasn’t even there? A thought popped hastily into his head. It was out of his mouth before he could stop it. “Have y’all even seen magic for yerselves, anyway?” Theodore’s hand ached to swipe up and cover his mouth. He wanted those words back. He wanted them back now. It was a good question- the right question- but with the way his parents’ faces flickered from incredulous to outraged... Shit. He needed to watch himself. “Have we- have we ever- ever seen-” his mother sputtered. “Theodore, that’s not your place to ask,” his father said harshly. “We’d know magic when we see it. It looks like what we’ve told you. End of story.” “But- but that’s not what I saw!” Theodore blurted. He cursed himself again, but he needed the words out. “I saw somethin’ that was pretty ‘n careful ‘n delicate, nothin like lazy destruction or evil monsters! Y’all- y’all saw what they did too, magic isn’t like that!” “It is like that, and it is what happened in town,” his father insisted, scowl deepening. “You were there, Debora. You saw it yourself.” “I did,” she nodded, “and it was jus as nasty as I thought. The sorcerer musta done somethin to our eyes so it seemed different, that’s all.” Theodore’s train of thought hit a snag in the tracks. Wait. Their eyes? What? Where did that factor in? They were just doin’ smoky tower magic, nothin happened to our eyes. They didn’ even do magic in our direction. He opened his mouth to protest, but his mother cut him off. “Revaew, look at em- that daggum filthy wizard has- has bewitched our son,” she spat. She swept her hand in his direction, earning a flinch and a step back. “He ain’t seein any sense! What’re we gonna do with ‘em?!” “... give him time, Debora,” his father said. “Spells don’t last forever.” He hadn’t moved, arms still crossed and gaze still harsh. But there was a menacing glimmer in his eye. The second he saw it mirrored in his mother, he felt as if the room became an icebox. A beat of silence passed. Theodore swallowed down more words that bubbled up, watching as his parents exchanged a look. He stood stock still and quiet. If you asked him later, he’d say he could swear he felt frost climbing up his legs. “... y’all’re not ta speak of magic again,” his mother finally said. “Not so long as y’all live in this house.” “Not to your siblings, your friends, yourself, anyone,” his father added. “Magic- all magic- is a curse. If we see y’all spreadin around that sorcerer’s hex again, yer gonna be worse than grounded,” his mother said curtly. “Understood?” Though his mind churned and bucked, crying mutiny and injustice, Theodore forced himself to nod. “Ya swear it?” his mother pressed. “I… I-I swear it,” Theodore choked out. As the words left him, the tension in his father’s shoulders eased, and his mother’s brow smoothed. Approval at last. He tried to ignore the frozen bile in the back of his throat. “We gotta talk to yer siblings still, but yer free ta go,” his mother said. “Remember what we talked about, Theodore,” his father warned. “I... I will, pa. Don’ worry,” Theodore mumbled. He couldn’t leave the room fast enough.
Nilo, Tyler, and Elise all stood against the wall in the hallway. Though their faces begged for reassurance, he couldn’t meet their eyes. He just let his feet carry him through the house, gaze glued to the floor. When he opened the door, it was glued to the grass. Then the dirt path. Then the floor of the barn. Though his body shook with barely acknowledged fear, he clambered up the ladder and back into the loft. It was only when he tucked himself into a dark, high corner that he finally let himself think. Questions swirled and lashed in his head, each more pointed than the last. Why couldn’t he tell people about what he saw? Why didn’t the magic look like they said? Why did they insist his eyes were wrong? Why had his mother called him bewitched when he tried to say they were wrong? Did they even know magic at all? Were they trying to hide things? He didn’t know. He didn’t know. He didn’t have answers, and the more he thought, the more frustrated he got. By the time he felt tears trickling down his cheeks, he knew he had to make some kind of decision. Even if the idea scared him. Taking a shaky breath, Theodore scrubbed the tears from his face. He unfolded himself from the corner he’d crammed himself in. Dropping lightly to the hay, he strode over to his hidden nook. The floorboards creaked under his hands as he reached for his journal. The beat up cover looked ready to fall apart. But it’d persevered this long. It still held so much precious knowledge. It could still hold more. Just like him. Theodore sat down in the middle of the loft, scribbling away once again. Though this time, an air of purpose surrounded him. A flame of determination lit his thoughts, illuminating the words on the page. If his parents weren’t gonna tell him the truth about magic, he’d find it out himself. ‘Anyone can use magic, kid,’ the stranger’s words echoed. ‘Even you. You just gotta dig for it.’ Dig is just what I’ll do, Theodore thought. I had a bad landin. Not so much on my feet. But I can learn. I will learn. And I’m gonna hit the ground running.
I saw the devil (in me) - chapter 2
contains some heavy spoilers for the devil ending
chapter 1 I ao3
If he was expecting a profound sign that V is gone, he found none. Night City was just as Takemura remembered it - crowded, flashy, and devoid of taste, both figuratively and literally. Vendors were outshouting one another, each determined to lure a potential client into an inevitable culinary disappointment. Takemura found himself navigating through the busy market that an unfortunate shortcut led him through. In hindsight, he should have ordered a cab and arrive at the address Viktor provided unscathed and in a much shorter time, but he felt the need to stretch his legs, or at least that’s what he’d been telling himself. He still had plenty of time before the memorial service started and he didn’t want to arrive either too early or too late - the first one would no doubt result in a lot of uncomfortable silence and the latter would make it seem like he didn’t care. Takemura wasn’t too keen on either of these options and that meant a long stroll through the city.
He could never grasp why V seemed to like this place so much. She spoke about it often, cursing corporations, gangs, and ever present exploitation to kingdom come, but she also seemed to fit in like a perfect piece of the puzzle, a small, but necessary cog in a living, breathing machine. She moved through it freely, her loud confidence and necessary caution interchanging in a wild dance that made the entire city spin. Where V shined, Takemura found himself losing rhythm, coming from the strict, organized world of the Arasaka military, and eventually realizing that he’d never learn the dance that made one feel at home in a place like this.
As he approached Vista del Ray, a strong smell of old frying oil and fish gave way to more subtle scents, identical all around the world in places like this, Heywood or Shinjuku, it didn’t matter. Cigarette smoke floating up and chasing the wind, too much cologne on a young, elegantly dressed men that almost bumped into him, too focused on going through his emails to look ahead, a dinner burnt, tenants desperately attempting to air the apartment by opening a window as wide as it would go, which unfortunately for them wasn’t very far. All of that mixing, shifting, evolving into what could only be called a smell of desperation and longing for an opportunity.
Takemura left the main street and turned left into an alley, feeling the intense stares of a group of young men leaning heavily on a graffiti-covered, brick wall. He knew the type, so he just gave them a warning glare, aiding them in measuring the odds. As expected, none of them approached him, having done the math and realizing that they stand no chance. He wasn’t a local, so maybe if they stumbled upon someone else like him they’d go for it, but Takemura had Arasaka written all over his features, suit and tech.
El Coyote Cojo seemed like a bar identical to many others, but the second Takemura walked through the door, he was sure he was in the right place. There was no music playing, the room filled with a murmur of hushed conversations between all the people who came to say their final goodbyes. And there were quite a lot of them. Takemura felt the corners of his lips go up in a sad smile. Of course, V had a lot of people who’d want to be here, the open suite full of them, standing in their small, respective groups, some around the tall tables, others hunched over their drinks at the bar. From where Takemura was standing, he hardly saw any familiar face, but then again, in those short few weeks he got to know V, there wasn’t much opportunity to get to know all the people she was close with. There was no time for that and more importantly, he didn’t feel like it was his place to intrude into her personal life. After all, they were just coworkers, of sorts, helping each other towards a common goal.
That is, until that stakeout on the roof. If Takemura was to pinpoint a moment where he could in full confidence call V a friend, it was those few hours they spent going over the entry points to Arasaka Industrial Park, analyzing the routes of transports going in and out, coming up with yet another idea how to get in without getting shot on the spot.
Then they got pizza and the conversation naturally shifted into something more casual, them reminiscing on their pasts and their futures. How different things were back then. V in what might’ve been her best, determined to get her life back and him doing the same.
It seemed none of them got what they wanted.
Someone passed next to him, whispering something about him getting a move on under their breath, and only then did Takemura realize that he was still standing in the doorway, staring somewhere above the heads of the mourners. Glad that he hadn't caught the attention of everyone in the room, he took a few steps forward and then, finally, he noticed Viktor, waving at him from his seat at the edge of the bar.
When Takemura approached him and took a seat next to the ripperdoc, the first thing he noticed was that Viktor looked noticeably older, dark circles under his eyes only adding to the feeling. Dressed in a classy, black suit that sure has seen better days, Viktor looked out of place, almost like...
"I was already thinkin’ you wouldn't make it." he started, mindlessly rolling the nearly empty glass in his hand. "How was your flight?"
Small talk, then.
"Good enough, thank you." then, after a moment of deliberation, Takemura added. "I usually do not fly commercial."
"Oh? What on earth stopped Arasaka’s golden boy from taking an AV?" Viktor asked, calling a bartender with a wave of his hand.
Takemura hesitated for a moment, but before the looming pressure of every passing second making the situation more awkward had a chance to set in, the bartender, a tall, heavily tattooed Latino man approached them to take his order.
"Just water, please." the bartender’s brow shot up, as if asking Takemura if he was sure, especially considering the occasion, but seeing that his client wouldn’t backtrack, he simply pulled up a glass. When it was full, two cubes of ice clinking inside, Takemura looked back at Viktor, still patiently waiting for his answer.
"My higher ups don’t exactly know that I am here." he finally said, taking a sip from his glass to wash down the ping of anxiety he felt swelling up the moment he mentioned his unauthorized trip across the ocean. Not that it mattered anymore. The sword laid at the bottom of his suitcase, carefully wrapped in silk, just waiting for him to get some closure he apparently longed for so desperately.
This time, Viktor’s brow shot up.
"No leave to mourn a friend?"
"I’m afraid they would not consider it a reason important enough to neglect my duties."
"You clearly did."
"Yes, fully aware of the consequences that await. But I could not miss it, I suppose I needed some…"
"Closure? And they wouldn’t let you have that? No wonder they call it a soul sucking job. Sorry to pry, but why don’t you just quit? Put in a two months notice or somethin'?"
"It does not work like that. Not when you have been there for as long as I have."
Viktor clearly wanted to say something, but just as he opened his mouth, everyone present started walking up to the area on the left from the bar, gathering around a small table covered in freshly lit candles, V’s photo in the middle. She was smiling, little reflections of the candle flames dancing in her eyes. V’s hair was shorter than Takemura remembered, it must’ve been taken well before they met. In a better time.
It was Viktor who stood in front of the crowd to address them. His voice sounded strained at first, unusually high, but he cleared his throat, once, twice and didn’t let his voice break even once. He spoke with confidence, yet calmly, the same reassuring voice Takemura remembered from when he ended up in his clinic alongside V, with multiple gunshot wounds and some more or less minor lacerations.
After Viktor was done, a young woman with colorful hair took his place. Clearly battling with her shaking voice, she told about the time she and V went diving in the ruins of her childhood hometown. How she still had the camera that V fished out for her and how she’s still trying to fix it, but even if she won’t be able to bring such an antique back to life, a braindance they recorded together will keep a piece of V alive forever. After that, people started taking turns, each with their little story of what V meant for them. Takemura couldn’t quite focus, each new face blending with another, a never-ending litany composed of the good deeds of a woman that no longer was among them. When it was his turn to speak, Takemura hesitated.
"I did not know V for as long as most of you, but I am honored to have been able to call her a friend."
And that was it.
                                                              ***
"A lot of people came."
"I’d say a third of them were fixers from every single part of this fuckin’ city. Never took them for a sentimental type."
"Me neither."
"You know...you know what she told me in those last few weeks? “Viktor, if you dare to shed a single tear at my funeral, I swear I’ll rise up from the dead again and kick yer sorry ass”. It was one of the last things she told me, anyway. Couldn't really speak much later on." Viktor took another swing from the bottle, wiping his mouth on the sleeve of an already ruffled suit jacket.
Takemura didn’t ask how V was doing in those last moments. Didn’t need to, when he arrived at the clinic professor Kusama didn’t spare him any of the details. Quite the opposite, she was elaborate, listing all the end-stage symptoms in a cold, clinical tone. Upon hearing them, a thought crossed his mind that if it was about him, he’d beg to be copied and stored into Mikoshi. But not her. V wasn’t a coward like him and faced her death the way he’d never be able to.
"Viktor, I am..so deeply sorry." he just muttered, unable to form anything more concise. What was he supposed to say, anyway? How did his remorse and guilt compare to Viktor’s pain, who got a front row seat seeing all the ways V was withering away, day by day? Who must’ve spent hundreds of hours at her bedside, making sure that she’s comfortable in those last moments while Takemura spent those months bundled away in an office reviewing mountains of meaningless documents, too scared to even call her?
"Nah." Viktor waved his hand, almost knocking over Takemura’s glass. "She wouldn’t want us to mope like this. Imma be okay soon enough. After all, grieving is a process and all that. What about you? Been holdin’ up okay?"
"Yeah." Takemura said, but his voice came out coarse. He cleared his throat. "As much as circumstances allow."
Viktor hummed, clearly not convinced. For a second Takemura was sure the other man would push the matter, but he dropped it. Two shots of tequila seemingly materialized on the counter before them when Takemura wasn’t looking, too focused on Viktor and his own thoughts.
"How ‘bout just this one and we call it a day?" Viktor asked, taking the glass into his hand.
"I suppose it can’t do any harm." Takemura replied, raising his own glass. "To V?"
"To V."
                                                             ***
Paradoxically, only when cigarette smoke filled his lungs he could finally take a deep breath. He excused himself a few minutes after their fourth round of shots. It’s not like he didn’t enjoy Viktor’s company, but the doctor was too perceptive for his own good and with each sip of alcohol chipping away his composure, Takemura felt that steel grip on his throat grow tighter and tighter.
He was alone in an alley right next to the entrance, cold winter air slowly sobering him up. Most guests have already left, only a few hindered behind, talking in the same, lowered voices he heard before. Not like he could hear any of that through the music, an old rock song he couldn't recall. Takemura slowly exhaled, a cloud of smoke dulling the air in front of him. It was time.
"Do you mind?" a woman's voice, right next to him. Takemura cursed under his breath. He was getting careless, much too distracted for his own safety. He turned his head and to his relief, he recognized her. A friend of Viktor’s, this tiny blonde woman, she ran some kind of an esoteric shop in the front. Misty was her name. They chatted a few times during the weeks Takemura would drop by the clinic to check on V.
"Not at all." he replied and moved a little to the side, making room for her to lean on the brightly painted wall. She didn’t take the invitation and remained standing, her big, brown eyes staring at him in a mix of emotions he could only describe as pity. Or maybe it was concern? He couldn't tell the difference anymore.
"You know," Misty started, her voice even softer than Viktor’s during his speech. "your pain is not lesser than his."
Takemura’s hand froze halfway from taking another drag of the cigarette. "Excuse me?"
"I’m just saying you shouldn’t cut yourself off. Viktor does that too, but not like this. The pain will not disappear if you keep running from it. It’ll just chase you up, no matter what you do. It’s better to make peace with it."
He didn’t know what to say. If he was in his right mind, he’d probably make up an excuse and walk away, but her words struck a chord in him that made him freeze, not daring to move even a little.
"I have made peace with it" he finally said, putting out the cigarette on the stone wall. He’ll find a trash can to throw it in later.
"I’m not the one you need to convince, Goro."
"I..I am sorry, but I have to go. My return flight leaves in a few hours."
Misty gave him a sad smile.
"I hope you’ll soon see that you’re exactly in a place you’re supposed to be in."
Hulu New Releases: September 2021
https://ift.tt/3zxzTpM
September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.
Guess what? We’re onto the Thieves in Time rewrite Episode 2: Go West Young Raccoon! And before we start, can I say that Tennessee was my favorite in the game? Because he was.
Onto the rewrite! Featuring an OC and a special guest appearance!:
The Cooper Gang ends up in the old west, where Tennessee Kid Cooper should be. However, much like Japan, things are odd.
Sly goes out for recon, and finds out about Tennessee being arrested, and a new Sheriff in town, Toothpick. Unfortunately, when Sly makes his way back to the hideout, he is followed. Fortunately, the one who followed will be an ally!
As soon as he gets back, the door is kicked open by a female Coyote, who points a gun at them and demands answers. The Gang tries to play dumb, but she says she already figured out some things. Toothpick's men have mentioned Time Travel. And while she thought it was the alcohol talking, Sly is definitely a Cooper. She has plenty of puzzle pieces, she just wants them to put them together.
After admitting and explaining that yes, Time Travel is a thing, the Coyote puts her guns away and tells them she's George, local saloon owner and a friend of Tennessee's.
George wanted to go in guns blazing as soon as Tennessee got arrested, but figured that might be a bad idea and has been gathering information through her saloon. She's especially laying low because Toothpick is looking for her.
When asked how she's hiding in plain sight so well, she just says "Toothpick's looking for a 'Miss Georgia Darrow', not 'George the bartender'!". Basically, no one in town knows her real full name. And the few who were smart enough to connect the dots like her too much to hand her over.
They still end up with the "let's break Tennessee out by getting Sly arrested" plan. Though with George in on the jailbreak, it's easier to convince Tennessee to trust Sly. Mostly because she tells them to just hand Tennessee the communicator instead of skirting around the subject.
After getting Tennessee out, the next plan is getting his gun back. However, the plot is derailed a little because he slips and says they need to "get his gun and ring back". Everyone asks "what ring?" And he gets a little shifty but eventually confesses.
Turns out, Tennessee had planned to propose to George after the bank heist. But then he got arrested and since the ring was in his pocket, it was confiscated as 'evidence'. George is kinda touched but also extra pissed at Toothpick for fucking up the proposal.
Since I rewrote it so Carmelita is already with the Gang, we skip the missions where they have to rescue her and then everyone gets captured and she has to rescue them. (Also, since Tennessee is taken, and the Sly/Carmelita fight isn't relationship breaking, they don't have whatever they had in the game). Toothpick also doesn't steal the van.
This is instead replaced with Sly ending up meeting the one character he really did NOT want to confront on this adventure, Clockwerk.
Clockwerk shows up while Sly is attempting to do one of the other setup jobs. He looks a little different, his mechanical body matching the technology of the time. But still, even as he approaches, Sly knows there’s probably not a second mechanical owl haunting his family.
Clockwerk is less hostile and more curious. He mentions seeing Sly and his gang in other Times, foreshadowing the other episodes, and had yet to interfere. But he can only stay in the shadows and observe for so long.
Sly decides to tell the truth, but play what he knows about Clockwerk. He says that an enemy is attacking the Coopers through Time, and Sly gets to fix it. However, it would be a bad idea for Clockwerk to take advantage of it. After all, his History is intertwined with the Cooper Family. Messing with it could spell his own demise.
Clockwerk ponders that, but wonders if it wouldn’t be worth it to end their feud here and now, striking while they’re distracted. Sly’s just all ‘where’s the fun in that?’. After all, Clockwerk wants to prove he’s better than the Coopers and their legacy. Going after them when another villain has taken them down? That’s not much of a victory.
While considering that, Sly plays another card. He tells Clockwerk that, if anything, he should be helping them. Obviously Clockwerk is annoyed and insulted by the suggestion. But Sly asks ‘are you really going to let someone other than you take us down? Are you going to let them succeed where you have failed?”
Clockwerk chuckles at this, but agrees that he will stay out of it. Preserving his own legacy and destroying the Coopers on his terms will come eventually.
After that, Sly goes back to the hideout to have a mini-breakdown because hello ptsd! He was shoving his panic down in the moment but now that he’s safe he’s like ‘Okay, I’m just gonna… take a nap. Knock right the hell out!’.
Tennessee comments on how he don’t blame him for that. Clockwerk is one of the few things the Coopers are worried about, in the long run. The rest of the Gang is a little curious. They all dealt with Clockwerk as an enemy, but they don’t know what the story is behind it. What is Clockwerk’s issue with the Coopers?
Tennessee admits he doesn’t completely know. That info didn’t get written down anywhere, probably because whichever Cooper started this didn’t think the old bird would stick around so long. What he does know is there was some sort of betrayal involved. That’s the only kind of thing that could make someone hate with enough passion for immortality. But he has no idea which Cooper started it or what the whole mess is about.
Back to your regularly scheduled plot!
Train heist goes mostly the same except the breaks on the van are fine so they don't make a hasty time jump. But Tennessee’s gun is taken again.
They find out that the next place the Gang has to go is to the time of swashbuckling pirates with Henriette 'one-eye' Cooper! Yeah I mentioned that I'm replacing two of the levels completely and one is Bob because while I like prehistoric levels… it doesn't make sense for the story. (Seriously. The Thievius Raccoonus only goes back to ancient Egypt! Even if the family were Master Thieves before making the book, even to the point of 10,000 BC, there would be no record of it for Le Paradox to use!!!)
Anyway, George managed to help with this because Toothpick and his goons paid for their drinks in some gold doubloons.
Carmelita also drops off Toothpick in the Present. Her bosses are like "wtf? You just dropped off El Jefe five minutes ago how did you-" and she just deadpans "Time Travel. Long story. Might have some more here in a few minutes. Well. A few minutes for you guys.". Her bosses are so confused.
Thanks for the prompt! I kinda made a combination of the ideas in the prompt and a totally random direction the story started taking all on its own!
Send more prompts guys! I need them!
Set a few weeks after s2 (but before the Snowball Dance scene)
The doorbell rings and Nancy exhales, puffing out her cheeks as she looks at herself in the mirror. She can hear the sound of Mike’s feet pounding down the stairs to answer the door and it sounds like a herd of zebras is tromping down the hallway and she knows it’s only going to get louder because all of Mike’s ridiculous friends are about to invade the house and if not for the imminent arrival of a certain someone, Nancy thinks she might lock them all in the basement and conveniently forget that they were down there.
Though she never thought she would ever admit to something like this, Nancy is actually glad that Mike invited all his friends over to the house to watch some dumb Star Wars movie on TV because it gives her the perfect cover. If Mike was the one leaving, then Nancy would be stuck at home for the evening, babysitting Holly so her parents could have “date night,” which she thinks is really just code for Karen insisting that her husband take her out to dinner so they can sit in silence at someone else’s table and eat a meal she doesn’t have to cook.
But having all the boys come over here means that Will Byers will soon be walking through the front door and, with him, his brother.
There’s a reason Nancy is standing in front of her mirror critiquing her reflection and it has nothing to do with a bunch of thirteen-year-olds and fuzzy Ewoks.
Not that Nancy will ever admitting to knowing that’s what they’re called.
Giving herself a final glance in the mirror, Nancy sighs again, turning away from the mirror. “What do you think?”
Holly is sitting on the edge of her bed, legs dangling far above the floor, already dressed in her pajamas and heavy-lidded from her bath. Holly is sucking on the ear of her stuffed rabbit but she nods when Nancy asks the question, her eyes intently focused on her older sister.
“Great. Thanks.” Nancy walks over to the little girl, taking her into her arms and settling Holly on her hip. “Glad to get the approval of a four-year-old.”
Downstairs, Nancy isn’t surprised to find that Mike and all his friends are already crammed into the living room. The two girls are with them, something that Nancy is still getting used to and not because it’s surprising to find that her brother has new friends after all these years but because Mike is always looking at El like she’s more than a friend and Nancy isn’t sure she’s ready to deal with a Mike that has hormones and interests outside of playing make believe in the basement.
Nancy feels a tug of disappointment in her stomach when she realizes that Jonathan isn’t among those crowded around the TV in the living room and she tries to push it aside, tries to remind herself that if there was a deviation in the plan then Jonathan would have come up with a way to let her know.
With school being out of the holiday, she hasn’t seen Jonathan in several days and Nancy realizes that she’s become one of those girls. The type of girls who cling to their boyfriends like seaweed and loathe to let them out of their sight.
Not that Nancy finds the comparison to seaweed all that flattering. But there’s no denying that she misses Jonathan. That she’s looking forward to seeing him. And that Jonathan bringing Will over to watch the movie provided the perfect excuse for him to come over to the Wheeler house and see her under the guise of being a good big brother.
Dustin and Lucas start debating the usefulness of Ewoks and Nancy rolls her eyes, turning away from the living room and heading into the relative safety of the kitchen. It seems that she’s not the only one who’s had that same idea. Jonathan is standing by the stove, peeling the top off a container of Jiffy Pop and the sight of him makes Nancy feel like the coyote in those old cartoons: limbs all tangled up and tied together as he tries to run in a dozen different directions at once.
She’s surprised to see him but at the same time, Nancy feels like she’s swallowed her heart and its lodged itself in her throat while moths flutter in her stomach and her lips and toes tingle from the very memory of kissing Jonathan and being close to him. She stops short, adjusting Holly’s weight in her arms, grateful for something to do. “Hi.”
Jonathan looks over at her and the way he smiles at her catches Nancy off guard because she’s still not used to someone looking at her like that. Like she’s reason enough to be smiling in the first place. “Hey. I thought I’d go ahead and make the popcorn so they’d be distracted.”
Nancy smiles, setting Holly down as she joins Jonathan by the stove. “I think they’re already distracted. I heard them arguing about those little teddy bear things.”
“Ewoks,” Jonathan supplies, like it’s a perfect normal word to say in casual conversation.
Nancy purses her lips so that she looks resigned rather than amused. “Sure you don’t want to go watch the movie with them?” She teases.
Jonathan shakes his head. “I can think of a better way to spend my Sunday night.” He leans in closer but hesitates, glancing over to where Holly is still standing, sleepily rubbing her rabbit’s ears. “Should we…?”
Nancy puts a hand on Jonathan’s shoulder to pull him closer. “She’s good at keeping secrets.”
They kiss and Nancy thinks that having a living room full of annoying teenage boys (and two girls of questionable judgement) is completely worth it, if only for the way she feels right now. Kissing Jonathan Byers in her kitchen...it still feels a little bit like her world has flipped upside down and dropped her into this life, this reality.
Though, Nancy knows, she wouldn’t trade it for the one she had before. Not with the way her lips are tingling and the way that Jonathan Byers has her heart racing.
They don’t pull away until something heavy -and presumably fragile- falls over in the living room and there’s a momentary hush as Mike and the others try to assess the damage of their nonsense. Nancy sighs, shaking her head. “I wish we didn’t have...you know…” She tips her head in the direction of Holly and the living room.
“I know,” Jonathan says, kissing her briefly once more before clicking on the stove burner and shaking the Jiffy Pop. “I could take you out sometime...without our siblings.”
Nancy feels heat collect in the tips of her ears and she nods, toying with the hem of her shirt. “I know...I…”
“I know, I know,” Jonathan interjects before Nancy can throw out any one of the excuses that she’s cultivated whenever Jonathan brings up the suggestion of the two of them going out. Of doing more than just sneaking a few kisses here and there when no one is watching. “Later.”
Jonathan doesn’t look at her when he says this, focusing all his attention on the Jiffy Pop and Nancy wishes that she could read his expression. Wishes that she wasn’t so insistent on these plans and schemes, on using Ewoks and siblings as an excuse to see one another.
“It doesn’t have to be secret, you know,” Jonathan says softly.
This time when Nancy purses her lips, she can taste the memory of Jonathan and it makes her long for him, even as he stands right in front of her. “It’s not...I thought we agreed we were going to just...take it slow. That we weren’t going to make a big deal out of things.”
Jonathan doesn’t say anything and silence settles in the kitchen, broken only when the Jiffy Pop starts to expand and Holly giggles and shrieks, “Pop!” which makes Nancy jump and roll her eyes.
Though, in a way, she’s grateful to her little sister for once again providing her with the perfect excuse. “I’d better put her to bed.”
Nancy takes Holly into her arms and tries not to feel like every step out of the kitchen is a step in the wrong direction. Like she’s giving the wrong answer on a quiz that she’d thought she’d studied for.
In the living room, Max is using one of the couch pillows to wallop Lucas and Nancy ignores them even though Karen will likely pin the blame of the ruined pillow on one person in particular. Instead, Nancy just carries Holly upstairs, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth. The fluttering moths in her stomach have suddenly grown claws, digging into her sides and turning her feelings of excitement and anticipation into something heavier, something that makes her stomach turn.
Suddenly, Nancy just wants Jonathan Byers and his stupid complications out of her house.
Unfortunately, what Nancy gets is Jonathan Byers waiting for her in the hallway outside of Holly’s room. Nancy closes the door quietly behind her and then jumps a foot in the air when she turns around and nearly collides with Jonathan. She smacks him on the arm hard enough to leave her own hand stinging. “Don’t do that!”
“Sorry.” Jonathan at least sounds like he means it. He understands all the reasons that Nancy might have to start jumping at shadows. “I wasn’t trying to scare you.”
“Then you probably shouldn’t have been standing in the hallway in total silence without letting me know you were there.”
Jonathan gives her a sheepish smile. “I didn’t want to wake Holly.”
Which, Nancy thinks, is a good reminder of why they shouldn’t be having this conversation directly in front of the little girl’s room if they have any hope of getting Holly to fall asleep when she knows the house is already full of excitement. Nancy just reaches for Jonathan’s hand, pulling him further down the hall and closer toward her own closed bedroom door.
The thought of it, and the hopes that she’d had for the night, start to turn the fanged moths back into regular ones, fluttering around her stomach and sending a tingling down to her toes.
“I’m sorry if I said something wrong earlier,” Jonathan says before Nancy can even think about doing the same thing.
Before she can even consider apologizing and setting them back onto the track they’d both envisioned when they’d decided to aim for the Sibling of the Month Award tonight.
She’s not sure what to make of this, of Jonathan and his quick and easy apology and the sincerity with which he says it.
“I’m not trying to pressure you,” he continues, seemingly unaware of the way Nancy is looking at him. “I’m not trying to rush you. I just…you know how I feel about you, Nancy, and I…I don’t want you to feel-”
Rather than let Jonathan finish, Nancy just pulls him closer to her, kissing him in the way she hadn’t dared to do downstairs in the kitchen, with their brothers just across the hall. She puts her arms around his shoulders, her fingers slipping into his hair, letting Jonathan push her against the bedroom door. Nancy can feel her heart pounding in her chest, running away without her permission, making her feel dizzy and like she needs Jonathan to keep her upright and sane and a part of this present moment.
And, for just that moment, everything is perfect.
Nancy is too focused on Jonathan’s lips against hers and the feeling of his hands on her hips to pay much attention to the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs or making the loose floorboards creak. It isn’t until a voice says, “Jonathan, we need more popcorn” that she realizes they’re not alone anymore and by then she thinks it’s probably too late.
Nancy reacts almost without thinking, pushing Jonathan away from her and she figures that it’s his surprise that makes him stumble backward. She turns her head away from Will, her face hot, and she covers her mouth with her hand like that might somehow disguise the smudged lipstick.
Will squints at them. “What are you doing?”
But neither rush to answer Will’s question, even with ridiculous lie that Nancy knows any other kid would see straight through. Instead, Jonathan only has eyes for her, though this time when Nancy looks at him, his gaze doesn’t make her feel the way it always does.
The way Jonathan is looking at her now doesn’t make Nancy feel like the most important person in the world. It doesn’t make her feel like the only person that matters.
It doesn’t make her feel like smiling at all.
Instead, the way Jonathan is looking at her now makes Nancy feel like she’s just made a terrible mistake. The hurt in Jonathan’s eyes is unmistakable and somehow it’s worse knowing that she’s the one who put it there.
Jonathan shakes his head, turning away from her just as it occurs to Nancy that she should say something. Do something. “Call me when you’re done, Will. I’ll come pick you up.” He steps past his brother, who is still standing in the hallway.
Will blinks, watching as Jonathan pushes past him. “You’re leaving?”
Jonathan doesn’t answer, doesn’t explain himself to either Will or Nancy. He just hurries down the stairs, grabbing his keys off the table by the front door.
“Jonathan! Wait!” Nancy steps around Will, hurrying after Jonathan, reaching the door just as he slams it shut behind him.
She yanks the door back open, ignoring the bite of the late November air as she follows after Jonathan. She hadn’t dressed with the intention of going outside, her legs bare and immediately covering with goosebumps, and she can see her breath pluming in front of her as she calls Jonathan’s name.
Jonathan gets halfway across the yard before Nancy catches up with him, putting a hand on the crook of his elbow in an effort to pull him to a stop. “Jonathan, seriously. Can you just…wait a second?”
With a sigh, Jonathan turns back to face her. “What am I waiting for? Because I think you’ve made it all pretty clear. It took me a second, but I get it now.”
Nancy blinks at him, surprised. “Get what?”
“You’re ashamed of me.”
“What? No.”
But she might as well have not even spoken. “All this stuff about wanting to take things slow and not rush…it’s all bullshit. All of it. I can’t believe I was too dumb to realize it. I thought you were different…that you…I dunno…you’d grown up or something.”
Nancy steps back, stung. She knows how most of the people at school see her. How their expressions of disdain have turned more into looks of pitying curiosity now that Barb is gone and Steve isn’t her boyfriend anymore but none of that matters as much as Jonathan’s words and how he sees her.
No one knows her like Jonathan.
To have him say these things…Nancy feels like she’s been slapped and she can only hope it’s too dark for Jonathan to see the sudden prick of tears in her eyes. “That’s not true.” The words are barely a whisper.
“Then what? What is it? Because that, Nancy? That all feels like you want me to be your secret. And I’m not…I’m not going to-”
“I’m scared.”
If it wasn’t for the way that Jonathan suddenly falls silent, blinking at her in surprise, Nancy wouldn’t be sure that she’d even spoken at all.
But the silence that settles makes it clear that Jonathan is waiting on her to continue and the feelings that Nancy has had crashing around inside her chest ever since she first kissed Jonathan are going to have to materialize like the crystalized breath making clouds between them.
Nancy swallows and tries to feel as brave as she’d convinced herself to be last year when they were trying to bring the monster into the Byers house so they could kill it.
Or when they were trying to make the lab in Hawkins pay for what they had done to Barb and to so many others.
Only, all of those things seem suddenly less frightening than standing in front of Jonathan in her front yard.
“I’m not ashamed of you,” Nancy says softly, looking at her own hands rather than Jonathan’s face. “I could never…that’s not…I’m just…afraid.”
“Of what?”
Nancy looks at the scar across her palm and in her memory, the pain that had followed the bite of the knife on her skin always feels sharper and brighter than she remembers it being at the time.
The memory of Jonathan standing there beside her then is what makes her lift her eyes to look at him now. “I don’t want to…I’m afraid because the people who matter the most to me keep getting hurt or killed and I…I don’t want to lose you. Like maybe if we don’t…if we aren’t…if I can pretend that things aren’t serious, that you aren’t the most important person to me…then I won’t have to lose you too.”
Jonathan looks at her long enough that Nancy has to drop her eyes again, feeling her cheeks turn hot with the embarrassment of her words. The admission and how pathetically small and stupid it sounds spoken aloud.
“Nancy…”
She swallows, turning her head. “I know. It’s…stupid. I’m stupid. I just-”
“Not stupid,” Jonathan assures her, putting his hand against the side of her face and guiding her gaze back toward him. “I know what it feels like to be afraid to want something.”
Nancy closes her eyes against the softness of Jonathan’s touch and his voice.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Nancy swallows. “You don’t know that.”
She’d thought that, once. Barb was supposed to be her best friend forever, the person that she left Hawkins with, the one who always had her back and was by her side. She’s lost track of the hours they’d spent together, making plans for themselves that always featured the constant of their friendship.
And even Mike, her annoying pest of a brother, had been in danger of being snatched away, taken like Will.
Jonathan puts his arms around her and Nancy leans into him, against the warmth of his chest and the solid comfort of his body. “No,” he admits. “But I know that you don’t have to protect me from you. You aren’t some bad luck charm.”
“I feel that way,” Nancy says softly.
“Hey.” Jonathan lifts Nancy’s face so that her eyes settle on his. “You aren’t. You are one of the best things that have ever happened to me, Nancy Wheeler.”
Nancy feels her cheeks heat up for an entirely different reason. “Well you obviously aren’t thinking clearly.”
“You have that effect on me.”
She stands on her tiptoes to kiss him and Jonathan puts his arm around her waist, pulling her closer against him.
Headlights wash across the two of them and Nancy moves away from Jonathan with a sense of growing horror as she watches her parents’ car pull into the driveway. She sighs, certain that her lipstick is more than a little smudged by this point and even if that escapes her parents’ notice, she’s certain that Ted and Karen Wheeler are going to make note of how Jonathan looks like he’s wearing a fair bit of lipstick.
“Dad,” Nancy says, clearing her throat and taking a step back from Jonathan, smoothing down her skirt.
Ted frowns, looking slightly confused, the way he always seems to do whenever he’s faced with a parenting situation that he’s never imagined himself having to endure. “I thought you were supposed to be watching your sister.” He’s glowering at Jonathan, like he’s trying to figure out why this teenage boy is standing in his front yard.
Jonathan tries to wipe away the traces of Nancy’s lipstick with the back of his hand without making his intentions obvious.
“I thought you and Mom were going out to dinner.”
“Well, we were,” Karen says flatly and her own glare is for Ted only. “Except your father forgot to make reservations. So I’m going to take a bath and finish my book.” She breezes past her husband, making a beeline for the front door.
Nancy clears her throat, reaching behind her to take Jonathan’s hand. “I think we’re going to watch the movie with the kids.” She tugs Jonathan behind her and he follows, even though she’s pretty sure that he’s still watching her father uncertainly.
Nancy has to admit that it feels better to be twining her fingers with Jonathan’s rather than pushing him away from her.
Mike rolls his eyes when Nancy and Jonathan walk into the living room. “Can you go make out somewhere else please?”
“What are you talking about?” Nancy swats Mike on the back of the head as she passes him, ducking out of the way before Mike can retaliate.
“Will saw you guys sucking face in the hallway,” Mike says flatly and Max giggles while El looks closely at Nancy and Jonathan, as though trying to analyze the accuracy of this statement. “And we’re trying to watch this.”
Will gives Jonathan an apologetic look that is almost endearing and Jonathan just smiles at his brother, patting his shoulder affectionately as he sits down on the couch beside Nancy.
“No one is stopping you from watching your precious Ewoks.” Nancy blanches when Dustin and Lucas exchange broad grins and she frowns. “I mean…whatever those are.”
Jonathan chuckles, shaking his head as he puts his arm around Nancy’s shoulder. She leans her head against his shoulder and thinks maybe this night isn’t going to be a total waste after all.
Zorro: Sacrilege #2
Tumblr media
Zorro: Sacrilege #2 American Mythology Productions 2019 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Mauricio Melo Coloured by Emmanuel Ordaz Torres Lettered by Natalie Jane     On a business trip for his father, Don Diego de la Vega visits San Leticia Asistencia, a new mission far from the beaten track of El Camino Real in Alta California. Here, he hopes to spend a few leisurely days touring the grounds of the mission, whose construction was funded by his father, and perhaps he can also soothe his shattered heart, broking after the unfortunate parting with his fiancé, Lolita. But this vacation is far from relaxing. An accident in the lucrative tin mine on the Asistencia grounds kills several Native American workers, then, an Asistenia servant girl named Muat reveals that she is forced to the bidding of the monks, for fear that her brother will be tortured, or worse. It would seem that all in the Asistencia, save the white-skinned Spaniards, fear for their lives. And in the darkened interior of the Asistencia’s chapel, a terrifying and sacrilegious manifestation attacks a monk, while Muat’s brother Lanu is whipped mercilessly outside the Asistencia walls….     While I am digging the fact that these folks have been taking Zorro and placing him in situations that are far from what we normally saw him in. I love it too because this era in time was rife with superstitions and local gods not to mention all that the Spanish brought with them, enslavement and such. So yeah this direction that we see the stories taking for me is utterly magnificent! Here Mike manages to weave the local lore, Spanish lore and the traditional way we see Zorro together beautifully and naturally. I love the way that this is structured as we see story & plot development create this great ebb & flow.     There are multiple story arcs here that are layered throughout and they will converge in some way, shape or form as with the exception of the recently arrived Don Diego everyone else seems have their own personal secret agenda’s. If there is one thing I know it is that people are devious, self-centred pieces of coyote doo doo so everything we see here has this ring of truth that surrounds it in ways that are completely believable. Mike has always been impressive and I miss his artwork but I'll be damned if his skills haven’t grown exponentially.     The interior artwork here is bloody marvellous! I love seeing how the varying weights of the linework are utilised to create this attention to detail that appears on the page. When Zorro appears from the dark and he blends into that that’s a stunning moment. The way we see those possessed and the one go bye bye yeah that was freakin impressive as well. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a really solid, strong eye for storytelling. Though I have say, Mauricio you need to utilise more backgrounds here! You are missing an opportunity to really shine and make this series one of the best on stands. I do like the colour work here as well. The way that we see shading and colour blocking not to mention some highlights are very well utilised here.      The strength of the story & plot development we see alongside this amazing pacing keep things moving forward extremely well. The character development or characterisation, keeps us on our toes as we are never quite sure who’s to blame for what, though they are all guilty. Add into all this the interiors and you’ve got one of the hottest series, franchises, in comics today. I mean this is his 100th anniversary and the legend only continues to grow. American Mythology does him more than simple justice as they continue to carry on his legacy.
As a part of our author spotlight, we’ve asked each writer to highlight 5 fics and tell us a little about their experience writing (or reading) them.
1. Goodnight Moon
He felt a jolt go through him, with the intensity of a lightning strike. He jerked back, but the man held fast. He felt like his brain was splitting along the hemisphere. Everything was so fucking loud that it hurt. His legs felt weak, and he walked backwards, his knees hitting the coffee table and folding immediately into sitting. He was amazed the shitty particle board held his weight. All of it came crashing back at once, and he couldn’t stand the intensity. He began to weep involuntarily, rocked by the memories. ALL of it. His whole entire life. Growing up. His parents. Fillory. Julia. Brakebills. Magic was fucking real. Alice. Margo. Fuck. “Eliot.” His voice sounded like someone else’s, thick and slurred. He looked the monster full in the face. “What have you done with him?”
It smiled at him. The monster riding around in the Eliot meat suit. The eyes. That was what was so wrong. Fucking alien eyes. It smiled. “There you are.” Its voice was warm and full of affection. Quentin felt like he might vomit.
This was my putting my toe into a new fandom fic. Which—my last fandom was when Torchwood went off the air, so that was a long time ago. TBH, I really wasn’t even more than a casual viewer of the show up until S3, and then was like holy fuck. I didn’t even ship Q/El until this season, just knew that I wasn’t a fan of Q/Alice (sorry!), kind of agreeing with niffinAlice’s summation that their relationship had been a garbage fire. So, when the finale was coming to an end, I was like…holy shit! They are going to lean into Q/El! This never happens on shows that I love. Following swiftly with holy shit. Then, I got excited. Because I realized that it was going to be a slow and painful ride to get Eliot back. Also, Hale is going to kill it in this role, and Eliot is such a great choice because he is, IMHO, the emotional center of the show. Plus, if the monster gets all of Eliot’s memories, he’s going to have shitloads to pull from to torment Quentin with, and I am for it. Hence, this little fic was born. I wasn’t sure if I would stick around in the fandom, but I enjoyed writing this so much, that the fic ideas just started to flow.
2. The Long Way Around
“It matters because when you think I am not looking, you stare at me like I hung the fucking moon. The rest of the time, you avoid me because it seems like being around me causes you actual physical pain.” He took a deep drag from his cigarette, exhaling in a long plume. “And you say my name like it's a goddamn prayer.” He stared at Quentin, willing him to turn and face him, but Quentin continued his fastidious study of the ground. “So, the way I see it, we are either together in your timeline. Or, I am dead.” Quentin did look at him then, his eyes impossibly wide.
So, this was definitely a fic that was built around a bit of dialogue—the one above—that I wanted to center the fic around. Also, I am a sucker for stories where one character remembers and no one else does. I wanted it to be painful, and to force Q to be honest. The ending came to me when I was in the shower—I wanted something to anchor things to, and make it interesting. I tried writing this for Welter’s timeloops theme, but missed the deadline, but still liked the story enough to write and post it. Prompts are definitely my friend.
3. Situation Normal
“Oh, my God.” Eliot took a step back instinctually. They had been so wrong. About everything. He was wrestling with both shock and awe over the utter the depths of their stupidity. They had been told, over and over, that this Thing was feared by the Gods. The monster was ancient, and he realized dimly that they must look like mayflies by comparison. Their sheer arrogance that they could control It, they could win, was ultimately to be their downfall. He should have been used to losing by now, as apparently they were Wyle E. Coyote and the Universe was the fucking Roadrunner, and somehow they never, ever managed to see the anvil coming.
So, in my old Torchwood fandom, there was a challenge that was based on adapting the show around a movie—this could be a straight swap the characters out, or more subtle retelling of the show through the frame of a movie. My favorites were of the latter variety, and one of my very favorite fics to read coming out of that entire fandom was a Jaws/Torchwood crossover which never should have worked but was pretty much perfect. So, I wanted to try this myself. This was tough to plot out—didn’t want to reveal my hand too early on and keep people guessing. I literally sat in team meetings blocking out scenes and conversations in code. I was really happy with how this one came out, and want to try again with another movie. Please don’t tell my boss about that team meetings part.
4. The Zeppo
She wasn’t convinced. This meant something to him, she could tell. Nothing meant anything to him. He had been crushing hard on that geek since the moment he saw him, marking him as his target early and often. She actually couldn’t tell what Q had thought of that, he just seemed equally mortified pretty much anytime anyone aimed their attentions towards him. If she had been a betting woman, she would have put good money on Alice Quinn. That would have been delightfully awkward to observe and satisfying to tease. This? What was she supposed to do with this? It was absurd, she knew. But she hated not being in the know, even the tiniest bit, most especially when it came to Eliot, with whom she covetously and with great intent been entwined.
This was my first Margo POV, and I freaking loved it. She is so awesome, but there is something kind of mean girl from S1 but also super vulnerable when it comes to Eliot that I wanted to capture here. I also really loved writing about badass Margo who not only makes her own fun but kind of almost saves the day, with the help of the ladies. I really want to expand out the ladies winning everything in another fic, and also write more about Penny/Julia/Kady, which I never would have considered shipping before, so thank you S3 for my ot3.
5. Infinite Probabilities Ratios
Word of the Beast’s attack had spread quickly across campus, like the viral infection that it was. Eliot was completely shook. He made a hasty retreat to his room, unable to be around the others just now. He couldn’t look at their faces after seeing them all die, one by one, in horrific, albeit creatively different ways. He hadn’t realized there were so many means of eviscerating a person. He was currently staring at the Broadway poster of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” on his wall, absolutely certain it was supposed to be the original book cover of “The Naked Lunch”. He had grabbed a bottle of whiskey and two glasses on his way up, not at all surprised when Quentin knocked on his door a short while later.
OK. So, I am actually in the process of writing a fiction book right now, which is all kinds of crazy. But, I wanted to try out the premise of that story—which is that the main protagonist has the ability to shift the world slightly away from the center, forcing the other characters to be in this sideways world. The changes are very subtle, but because the protagonist is the one who essentially builds this other world, there are things that are wrong. I wanted to do that here, with the shift being done by the monster, who guesses what their world should look like, missing out on the subtleties—for example, whiskey tasting like Kool-aid, or assuming Eliot would have a Broadway poster versus a one of a semi-obscure book about drug addled wanderings. Stuff like that.
