Chapter 10: Ikebukuro Bookstore, Meet Up

Thanks to the camping boom, I had no trouble finding reference materials. I entered the bookstore where we were supposed to meet, and took the escalator up to the second floor, where a row of camping books and mooks were lined up somewhere prominently. [1] As a matter of fact, there were so many books that I was at a loss.

Fortunately, I’d arrived much earlier than when we supposed to meet, so I had time to lose myself. I settled down at the section and started looking through the selection.

During my recent exploration in the Otherside, I’d realised that I was lacking when it came to outdoor skills, and I felt somewhat compelled to brush up on that. When I tried to burn the yamanoke that Toriko had crushed - or rather, something that resembled a yamanoke in ghost stories - I hadn’t been able to start a fire swiftly. Even though I had waterproof matches, it still took a while for the flame to grow.

Since I was planning on continuing my exploration of the Otherside, it wasn’t a good idea to go on like this. I wanted to have more wilderness survival skills and other more basic outdoor skills under my belt.

I hadn’t picked up much from back when I was still living in my hometown, moving from place to place. The money I’d brought with me from home was enough to scrape by for necessities, and I would sneak into ruins or abandoned houses when I was broke, so I never had the opportunity to live completely outdoors.

I started looking for books that looked decent, focusing on mooks aimed at beginners. Their content didn't seem to be all that different. Ways to make a fire, methods of pitching a tent, camp meals, and information about facilities in various locations. These were regular leisure guidebooks, but they were precisely what I was looking for, so it wasn't a problem. I wished to learn about survival techniques for crisis management, but first I wanted to know how to go about camping normally. We weren’t looking to survive out in the jungle with just a knife, but instead purchase the right equipment and explore with ease.

I picked three books that seemed easy to read and left the area. I looked at my watch and saw that there were five minutes left until our meeting time. Toriko might have already arrived. I wanted to take a look at books on military survival and mountain climbing books as well, but I left that for next time.

I went down to the first floor and looked around the area. Toriko didn't seem to be here yet. Even in a crowded place, Toriko stood out so it was impossible to miss her. I decided to pay first, and headed towards the checkout, when the magazine section caught my eye. I stopped in my tracks when I saw the front page of a fashion magazine with covered in words about fall and winter hairstyles and other stuff.

I hadn’t bothered with my hair for some time and it’d grown out quite a bit before I knew it, and one of my immediate problems was what to do about it.

Even though I had never paid any attention to my hairstyle since the day I was born.

When I was in elementary school, my hair was so short that I was mistaken for a boy. From middle school to high school, I simply let it grow out without any care or concern, and cut it myself when it got in the way. Things at home calmed down during the winter of my second year of high school, but I wondered what happened after that point. I think I went to the local barber once?

When I started university- nah, I think it was before my part-time job interview, I went to a 1,000-yen barber shop and got my hair cut somewhat short, and it had basically stayed the same ever since. When my bangs got in the way, I would visit the barber again. I think that was the extent of how much work I'd done with my hair. I'd never been to a beauty salon. They were expensive, and kind of scary.

I picked up a hair catalogue-like thing from the fashion magazine and started flipping through it.

I didn’t get it. Nothing was going into my head.

There were all sorts of hairstyles, but I had absolutely no idea if any of them suited me.

As I flipped through the pages in pure confusion, I started to get increasingly pissed. I felt stupid for fretting over something like this. I closed the magazine, put it back on the shelf, and turned around, just in time to see Toriko enter the store.

It seemed like Toriko noticed me at the same moment. I turned and headed in her direction since she was waving at me.

When we met in front of the corner for new releases, Toriko smiled and said "Sorry, I'm a little late."

"It’s alright, I was looking at books anyways. I'm gonna go pay, wait here for a bit."

"Okie-dokie." [2]

I got a little annoyed at the carefree smile she directed towards me.

Without a clue about how others feel…

[1] So, the Japanese here says ムック and I was like wtf is that? Turns out it's a portmanteau of books and magazines that started in France(?) but is now only really used in Japan still.

There's apparently a Wikipedia page on this lmao, which describes the thing as such: A mook is a publication which is physically similar to a magazine but is intended to remain on bookstore shelves for longer periods than traditional magazines, and is a popular format in Japan.

[2] Toriko says "okay" in katakana (オーケイ), which has a more casual vibe than an actual "okay" (which would be something like はい) so I changed it up a bit.

[3] Sorawo uses お前 ("omae") here, which is a brusque version of "you", so the tone here sounds rather resentful lmao.

A Komatsu time travel au

(I know one fic who did something with time travel in this fandom but this here is less angst and more comedy)

Komatsu by some means in some way (probably a Back channel accident) somehow ends up in the past roughly 500 years ago , shortly after Fronze's death to a very very depressed (and suicidal) Midora that needs emotional support that Ichiryu (the only person whit both sanity and emotional intelligence other than Fronze in this family and at the only alive member whit both until he adopts Coco , and only when Coco becomes part of the family will there again be two people (we don't count Komatsu here) whit both sanity and emotional intelligence better than a rock in it again) can't provide at the moment (because of trying to deal with the human government and their bullshit) , Accacia fucking somewhere else whit the Nitro at the moment , Jiro emotional intelligence of a literal rock and Setsuno not being both close enough to Midora to properly offer comfort and also not enough emotional intelligence to be able to handle Midora in his current state .

Komatsu of course being Komatsu (whit fuck ton of emotional intelligence even if somewhat questionable sanity) offers Midora the emotional support he desperately needs along with starting the effort to make sure Midora isn't going constantly on an empty stomach (it's a tough battle he bravely faces every day)

The result of the efforts is that Midora becomes his Combo Partner (and down the line husband as they are a lot closer in age here) and Komatsu becoming Midora's emotional support chef for who he is willing to do for anything for , with Midora's motto being "What Komatsu wants Komatsu gets" and the Gourmet Corp agreeing whit (probably an actual) cult like belief , support and devotion

There are interactions with the rest of the family of course (other than Accacia for obvious reasons)

Komatsu and Ichiryu are gossip buddies and go for tea around once a month , sometimes that miss it but in exchange offer extra juice gossip (Ichiryu knows more about the Gourmet Corp inner drama than most of it's members and Komatsu know more about international politics that almost all of the best information sellers in the world) . Komatsu being the adorable innocent little gremlin he is (you do not expect me to believe that Toriko or Zebra didn't rub on him at least a little) is always more that happy to offer Ichiryu a little nudge by using food on any political rivals or enemy (not by poisoning it of course that would be disrespectful to the food but when you're considered by many , even the most religious of people as the second coming of Fronze The Chef God , you know you cook good)

Him and Jiro more than once stumble into some very strange things and situations while going on walks and hunts together and more than once questioned how they are both still alive after it . The two of them together just seem to make Komatsu's weirdness magnet powers become 100x times stronger for some unexplainable reason . It does however mean that they have some very strange and intesting stories to tell (to which young Teppei will be raised on , his favorite by far being the time they prevented a species of seasoning flamingos from becoming extinct while they were searching for a milk pear as a snack for the wild fresh White Russian and the berry fruit boar they caught, which is what in this timeline inspired him to because part of the gourmet police and help protect and revive ingredients)

Him and Setsuno do become cooking buddies and even have nicknames for each other (he calls her Setsu-chan and she calls him Ko-chan) , until The Cooking Festival comes then they become rivals ready to beat the shit out of each other with poor Zaus , Yuda and Chiyo being in the middle of it while also having their own rivalry going on on the side (it makes the festival way more interesting to watch and even more chaotic when this timeline Komatsu , Brunch , Starjun and Ootake happened whit their rivalry because of the CHAOS the will be raining on it ) [Also I can't decide what relationship between Jiro and Setsuno wound be funnier In this timeline , the options being a) they are secretly married whit Komatsu (or Fronze depending of when) being the officiator and had at least 1 child together who is Teppei's parent or b) they are in a queerplatonic relationship whit each other because they mach each other's vibes so well , because you can't tell me that the girl that was going in animal skin bikini as a fashion choice wouldn't think Jiro's hair might have been cool then and even now as a result they are bff , is probably Jiro's child godmother and Teppei will call her grandma because in his eyes she is his grandma ]

Centuries pass on until it's time for his friend (and himself to be born) and lo and behold Midora finds baby Starjun while he was going on a walk by the ocean . The adoption papers are written immediately with him and Midora as primary guardians with the rest of the family as immediate guardians if he and Midora die . Baby Starjun gets raised in a way better Gourmet Corp and regular playdates with his technically nephew cousin Teppei . Until he is about 10 and having time with Uncle Ichiryu and they and Mansun accidentally discover a everything trafficking traffic ring(like they seriously trafficked everything , you named it they trafficked it) the results of which were 5 new cousins (aka the kings and Rin) . Needless to say Ichiryu got a tongue lashing so strong King Slime thought they were under life or death danger and tried to protect him , which only made the tongue lashing even worse . After Komatsu was satisfied with Ichiryu and allowed him to rest did he see how young Zebra , Sunny and Rin were looking as if he had invented the bread , he knew from that moment on those 3 will make their new father's life miserable by trying to copy Komatsu just like how Star tries to copy Midora . Star and Toriko actually do know they are related as twin brothers , along with telling Toriko whose kids they are . Midora is delighted to be the broody middle sibling , meanwhile Jiro is having a mid(!?!?) life crisis of no longer being the middle sibling but one of the older ones .

He also adopted both this timeline version of himself by posing as a relative along with Ootake , he is also technically Branch other legal guardian so he takes him along rather regularly to the Gourmet Corp HQ(aka Midora's Castle) the result in which being Chaos . It was still somewhat manageable before Grinpach and Tommyrod appeared and became in a very short amount of time Starjun best friends and an even more chaotic influence on him , resulting in the chaos becoming even stronger .

Komatsu despite everything is happy with the life he built here and is ready to cook God when the time is up and welcome Neo on a family dinner with everyone . And to of course let his chaotic friends turned his nephew/niece/children/godchildren/great nephew/younger self/charges on the world and see them spread chaos on it while watching it with his Combo Partner/Husband

Jojo is technically one of the earliest anime introduced to America because of the Stardust Crusaders OVA, which came out in the 90's.

And I agree on the whole "Try not to powerscale different universes" thing. I admit that it's stupid, and shouldn't really be done. It's the anime equivalent of "My Dad can beat up your dad", and I'm tired of people trying to say that it isn't. But it is fun to think about what would happen if a character from one show somehow got their hands on a power from another, and how they would use/abuse it.

I also would like to admit that I'm one of those people who believe that the Dragon Ball series should've ended with the Buu Saga, if we needed a continuation.

As for not watching the newer anime, I understand. They don't really make them like they did back then. I'm still sitting here, watching Onmyou Taisenki, GaoGaiGar, and the other classics. Kind of hard to find things with the same vibes now. Now it's mostly "Demon King" this, and "This world is cruel" that.

What happened to the simple stuff? What happened to just punching the big monster of the week into submission? What happened to the Gag anime, like our bobobo-bo bo-bobo and Gintama?

What happened to Toriko?

What happened to the fun and spectacle of things, just for the fun and spectacle of it?

Damn. I miss the times when some of the darkest things in anime was some guy's backstory, and not watching Bokomon getting stabbed to death in front of a child. Those were the good days.

I have a list of characters that anyone in the DBZ saga can easily beat the ass of (Even Yamcha), but they would be absolutely, royally fucked if Cell had their data on them/Majin Buu absorbed them.

Satoru Gojo- Because Infinity + the Six Eyes would make them virtually impossible to beat.

Any Stand User- do I need to explain any further?

Mahoraga- If Cell or Buu could become immune to a phenomenon if it didn't kill him the first time you hit him with it, you'd run out of options faster than people run out of "Goku vs" topics.

Garou- That guy's potential was impossible to comprehend fully. He is able to learn Martial Arts techniques just by observing them once, even at just a glance, or reading about them. Not to mention the fact that he can fight for days on end while being poisoned, sleep deprived, and gravely injured.

Ryomen Sukuna- Malevolent Shrine.

Cell is probably my favorite DBZ antagonist just because he really does give a challenge.

But after seeing Super... I'm beginning to think it's getting a little redundant for Goku to keep leveling up and up.

I am going to be on the real here and say it's hard to compare characters to others out of universe. From a world building standpoint, each universe has its built in limits to what characters can do. I think you can possibly compare similar universes and their characters, but I haven't really watched any of the newer anime (post 2010) because I'm such a diehard for the classics.

I thought of doing my first AU here in Tumblr so here we go!

You knew at the beginning that you wanted an adventure.

You would always remember how you always were an outdoors girl, especielly when it comes to Pokemon.

Big and small, cute or not, you always adore them.

So you had collected alot and i mean ALOT of pokemon during your travels, starting from your home region in Kalos to all the other regions like Kanto, Unova, Sinnoh, Hoenn, Galar and most recently, Alola.

Many people were shock at how many pokemon you had but you didnt pay much mind to them at all.

This was pretty normal to you and you love them all as they love you too.

All of you joined contests and showcases, gym battles and leagues togather with you all winning either 1st, 2nd or 3rd places in each competition.

You didnt have a specific endpoint but you knew that the pathway through the journey is the best bit than the ending.

Though, what you didnt expect was that you will have a brand new, out of this world journey.

You were just exploring one of the caves in the Alola Region and the next thing you know, you were in a world of "Gourmet Age"

Oh Arcerus...

Years past and now your are 22 years old, 6 years have past since that faithful day and well...things are looking up.

At first, you were suprised at the world you are seeing that consisted of animals that are LITERALLY made of Food.

And they were literally hunted.

I mean, you know some pokemon were hunted down but in a daily bases? And only for eating? Its already traumatizing for the young lady.

They even call them ingredients...

In the town that you are residing on, both before and now, you were still shaken at the discovery you just found.

For the town's people, they found you quite strange that you find their Gourmet hunting strange considering that it is normal during this age.

And dont get me started with her Pokemon.

Everyone was immensely shock at the strange new creatures that hold great power, they were even shock that someone as you as you in your teens can actually tame this many and powerful ingre-BEASTS!

You have to correct them or else the pokemon themselves will.

Overtime, you gotten used to your new home.

Though you missed your family and friends back at home, you always learn to adapt and resource to know what to do.

Your pokemon were at first also have the same reaction as you, especielly your poor Appletun and Alcreamie but they too adapt to their new area and have gotten the town loving them back.

(Though you have to stop a few of them in trying to take a bite out of them, resulting in Haxorus using Dragon breath to warn them)

Each of your pokemon does various jobs, hobbies and habits around the small quiet town to either have fun or earn money for you to continue living.

For you, you had decided to work at a small cafe in the town as a waitress but you also became a co-chef too after you had introduce some of your own world's cusine from each region like the over 100 types of curry from Galar, Malasadas from Alola and Poffins from Sinnoh.

For your pokemon, like i had said, they do various activities around the town

Like Drampa being like a school bus for the children whenever they go to and from school, with the children loving the ride and fun they had with the dragon pokemon.

And Florges and Shaymin helping in the harvest of fruits, flowers and other foliage that they could help with the local farmers.

And so much more.

Oh yeah!

Did i mention that the town you have been residing on for 6 years is also the home town of Komatsu?

The adevnture awaits then for you ;)

I am watching Otherside Picnic right now (episode ~6 so far) and I am very enamored with how much justification went into the romantic ‘problem’ of the show. So main girl Sorawo is very explicitly crushing hard on her new friend Toriko, the two of whom spend their time adventuring in a highly-dangerous shadow realm searching for Toriko’s lost friend (who so far is apparently the girl from The Ring? idk will see about that). Why not confess your feelings? The problem all romantic shows have to justify, right, or else the show ends.

For Sorawo, there are a bunch of really good reasons! Toriko is obsessed with finding her lost friend - the status of their relationship is unclear to Sorawo, of course. And that obsession also makes their current lifestyle not that conducive to a relationship, being taken up by daily fights against psycho horror demons. This is never a truly good reason to hold back of course, buts its a reason people often use to justify their apprehension, it makes sense.

But more importantly, Sorawo doesn’t actually care about Toriko’s friend. She cares about Toriko, romantically, but Toriko doesn’t know that, and in fact Sorawo considers this mission to be futile and overly dangerous, trying to get them to stop. Right now in Toriko’s mind, Sorawo is just being a good friend and good person helping out - but revealing a romantic interest changes the narrative, right? Suddenly all that charitable interpretation vanishes, that’s why you have been helping this whole time Sorawo, and when you say we should give up on the quest for the friend...well, is that out of concern for our safety? Really? Or is maybe just a little bit tactical of you? That interpretation looms over Sorawo.

Adding to the complication is that very explicitly Toriko is out of Sorawo’s league:

Sorawo is actually-plain, not hot-anime-girl-plain, not “oh my hair is short I’m such a tomboy teehee” plain, while Toriko has tall leggy blond privilege all over the place. They have a very cute conversation about how wide Sorawo’s face is compared to Toriko, its great, this gap is canon. So despite Toriko dropping, come Sorawo be honest, more than one hint of her attraction, they actually are vague enough for Sorawo to continue to believe she would swing and miss on this one.

Which of course leaves us on the other side, of “if you won’t ask em out why don’t you just leave?” And what, let Toriko adventure out into the Otherside alone, which she explicitly said she would do if she had to, and die? Which almost totally happened of course, when Sorawo tried to put her foot down and say it was too risky. Your hurt feelings aren’t worth letting someone *die* ya knob, and certainly not someone you care as much about as Toriko.

So Sorawo is stuck! Risking her life for a girl to help her find her maybe-actual-girlfriend and not knowing how to break the cycle. I would be stuck too, I totally buy it. Its very good writing and I love to see it.

Anime Overview: Winter 2021 Quick Takes

I may be a season late, but Wonder Egg Priority isn’t the ONLY Winter 2021 anime I’m reviewing! I’ve also decided to give my quick takes on these shows. In the case of one of them, the lateness of this review means I can go into the full thing, at least, so there’s that.

Otherside Picnic

Quickest summary: 12 episodes. (Slowburn) yuri adventure-horror show about two college girls (Sorawo and Toriko) who explore a mysterious world they dub ‘Otherside’, populated by scary beings who take the form of various Japanese urban legends.

I basically want to say “yeah just read the novels” for this one, but if you’re not up for that, it’s not like the anime is bad or anything. It’s fine! The novels are just really good and the anime has very lackluster presentation, mostly due to lacking production values. The anime also has an issue of skipping/rearranging some things and not bothering to cover up the plotholes this causes (for instance, if you’re wondering why, in the anime, Toriko and Sorawo have a jarringly tone shifting FUN BEACH PARTY after having to leave some people to a rather horrifying fate, then they forget about those people for several episodes before finally following up on it- I assure you in the novels they DID very quickly discuss and follow up on these people and then had their fun beach party). The anime chose to rush some parts as well...then it ended on a not-super-exciting-note that left the whole thing feeling kind of mediocre.  

 The books are atmospheric horror adventure stories with a slowly developing romance as a big thread, and the show pretty much fails to capture the atmospheric horror due to having so little budget it relies on cringeworthy CGI and lacking visuals. There’s not much you can say about that. The show also suffers a bit from not including enough of Sorawo’s distinct, acerbic narrative voice (and the hilarious amount of times she’ll wax poetic on how hot Toriko is).

And finally, Toriko and Sorawo’s relationship is a slow-burn one, so this anime only covering the first two novels also means we don’t get to the explicit stuff that starts happening in volume three. If the anime leaves you feeling baited, I promise, this IS a genuine yuri/wlw romance, it just takes its time building up to it.

I think the stuff the anime did do very well with were the Akari episodes- the ninja cats episodes was almost as amusing as it was in the novel and the followup episode was extremely cute.

The Otherside Picnic novels are a quirky horror-romance-adventure blend I whole heartedly recommend. The books have a lot of appeal, including that they touch on the effects of trauma and abuse and the journey of healing in a subtle and moving way. 

But, if you’re absolutely not up for reading the novels (or the manga, when it finally comes out), then I say definitely watch the anime- despite it’s limitations, it’s a fun time overall and the chemistry of the leads comes through. It’s such a rarity to have an enjoyable fantasy/sci-fi yuri anime about adult women out there. I’m sad it couldn’t get made with a better budget/direction, but I’m glad it was made at all. But if you come out of it feeling something is missing, I promise the source material is solid, great stuff that will leave you much more satisfied.

So I’m a Spider, So What?

Quickest summary: 24 episodes. After a mysterious event that kills her entire class, a high school girl is reincarnated as a spider monster in a video-game-like dungeon and has to fight other monsters to level up and survive...meanwhile, the rest of her class has also reincarnated but are mostly living as humans elsewhere.

My quick take is the spider girl is very charming and Aoi Yuki’s frenetic performance carries the show. It’s when we get deep into isekai bullshit and get dragged down by production issues that things gets a little dicey. The show does some interesting things with the video-game-like world premise (for instance, there’s an entire cult worshipping the “you’ve leveled up your stats”! voice everyone gets in their heads as a god, which is incredible, I love that! There’s also hints that some of the characters are clinging desperately to the roles they had in their old lives in detriment of their new ones, which is interesting and a premise I actually see rarely explored in isekai! Unfortunately said characters are so painfully bland I can’t really care about that dilemma). But despite those interesting ideas, we spend a good chunk of the narrative with Spider-girl’s classmates, who are all such bland modern isekai archetypes that it makes it hard to care about them and the time we have with them generally a slog. Even spider-girl’s side of the story gets repetitive and predictable in some ways after a while. There’s like...way too much stats stuff going on here. The story also flips between two timelines that are fifteen years apart, which is an interesting conceit, but also means the entire season ends on a confrontation we never get to see resolved (AND ACCORDING TO THE ANN FORUMS, IN THE NOVELS YOU DON’T GET TO SEE IT FOLLOWED UP ON FOR SIX MORE VOLUMES OR SOMETHING??? WOW).

But probably the biggest issue that drags the whole thing down is the production values (and visual direction) running into huge trouble. The CGI was always a little shaky, but it takes a horrible nosedive in the back half, and the fights (and even some basic conversations!) become painful to follow or downright comically terrible looking. There’s some interesting kernels of fun ideas in this story, and a charming narrator in spider-girl, but the overall show just left me feeling empty. And considering I couldn’t get through the first novel since it cared WAY too much about listing out stat changes for my taste (I COULD JUST PLAY A VIDEO GAME YOU KNOW) (that part’s easier for me to take anime from when I can just zone out for a few seconds and watch the fights at least), I guess that’ll be it for me and this story!

Heaven’s Design Team

Quickest Summary: 13 episodes. This comedy edutainment show runs on the premise that God got tired of creating animals so he outsourced it to a design team of angels. It follows the quirky cast as they struggle to create animals that suit the clients bizarre specifications while still being functional.

This ended up being my favorite of the season (After Wonder Egg began to spoil, anyway). It’s just very cute, genuinely relaxing and funny, wholesome and educational. It has a really loveable cast- they weren’t super deep but their quirks made this really fun to interact. We’ve got a little girl obsessed with poison and gross things, a burly guy who wants to make cute animals. a fiery mechanic lady...they’re a good mix. And, notably, a positive portrayal of a transgender woman! Venus is a lovable character and probably my favorite in the show (cemented when she went through tremendous effort to drag a couch out of the closet just so she could collapse dramatically on it and lament her boss’s demands- MOOD) and everyone on the show respects her, uses the proper pronouns, and she’s shown hanging out with the other ladies in the women’s bath. She’s just completely accepted without comment, which shouldn’t be a huge notable thing, but it unfortunately still is. I think this is the first time in show clearly aimed at young children I’ve seen an explicit trans woman casually a part of the cast and treated with complete acceptance and respect? The only issue to note is she is voiced by a cis man, so I hope if a dub ever comes out they get a trans woman on that. There’s a good article on anifem for more infromation!

The show was just really nice and comforting watch. The humor of this show deals with weird, gross and surprising animal facts presented in a quirky way- I LOVE animals and how weird they are so that was great for me. There’s also a lot of shade thrown at how God is a Troublesome Boss who is always making whimsical demands of his beleaguered design team, which is done well and something any freelancer can relate to. I also appreciated how it had our Loveable Edgy Emo Demons from Hell making design requests for bizarre fantasy animals and coming up with weird explanations for those- they were some of the best gags.

Yeah, overall this was just a lovely, chill watch that I plan to put on whenever I’m feeling blue and want to revel in wholesome buds, gentle humor and bizarre animal facts. I really enjoyed it and have no reservations recommending it.

Jujutsu Kaisen (Part 2)

Quickest Summary: 24 eps, but only covering the second half with this review. After getting possessed by a demon, Junpei goes to a school to fight curses and meet other curse-fighting kids and do shonen stuff.

oh wait I forgot I finished this in winter! It was fine, a fun second half with a lot of pretty fights and good animation. The pacing on this show is still super weird, I can’t believe it took us 23 episodes to see what was ostensibly the main trio actually work together. BUT HEY, NOBARA FINALLY GOT TO BE REALLY COOL AND SCARY AND AWESOME AND WIN A BIG FIGHT (see the above pic). It was literally the last episode, but I loved seeing her be an unhinged terrifying murdergirl kicking ass and that she’s has a different (ie less guilt-ridden) philosophy/approach to killing than Junpei and discussed it with him was a thoughtful touch that developed her character and their dyanmic.

The other girls also got a good showing in the tournament arc (sans Miwa). It’s a little weird that the pairings ended up being divided by gender so ALL the girls conveniently fought each other and ALL the boys conveniently fought each other but, hey, the episode where the girls fought WAS really epic and Maki and her sister’s backstory and relationship developed nicely and was pretty interesting, and Maki did at least get to help fight the nature demon. I like Maki! It’s pretty decent treatment as far as battle shonen goes, none of the girls are ever oversexualized or harrassed and they all feel like characters for the most part. That’s such a low bar, but so few battle shonen clear it.

As far as the actual plot, still not anything too interesting to me, but the show makes for good eye candy and is a fun action extravaganza and sometimes that’s enough!

2020.12.18 The World You Live In at Zepp Namba, 1st event report

I arrived with friends past 1:15 (door time), but lettings fans in here was very smooth. And there were leaflets for sukekiyo's January shows/MADARA and Dirt waiting for us on our seats.

After the interview, live footage and music videos, staff brought two long tables on the stage with 4 chairs. Fujieda again started with greetings and introduced himself and Takabayashi, and finally asked the audience for the applause for the band members as they come on stage.

Kaoru and Kyo came then.

Kaoru wore all black, jacket, glasses.

Kyo had green hair (same as for the a knot calendar photo session), shocking pink jacket, washed denim, pink socks and white trainers. He wore sunglasses.

They both introduced themselves with simple '薫です' and '京です' but I love how different it sounded for both of them.

Fujieda again talked first about the live footage from March. Kaoru commented that with the document it was really busy. For Kyo it felt that the staff, especially the staff under the stage was restless, moving a lot, but he himself just came and sang.

Next, Fujieda outlined the events in 2020 like he did in Nagoya, he asked if they watched the audiostreams.

Kyo: Yes, I watched all of them.

F: and then yours came last.

Kyo: I could really feel member's personality showing there.

Ka: how was the order out setlists came out decided? Was it after we submitted our setlists?

Takabayashi said that no.

Next Fujieda continued with the 2020 timeline and asked about what they can remember from the Pia VIP meetings.

Ka: I thought that Mr.Higuchi was really nervous interviewing all five of us at the same time.

Kyo: first day the atmosphere was so gloom it felt like a funeral.

After that they moved to the topic of Ochita single, F sked them about filming.

Ka: it finished so quickly, in an instant!

F: did you also feel it went by very quickly, Kyo?

Kyo: not that, there was something else. When filming we were working with a new director. For the first time, I got praised when shooting. Like only 5 minutes passed but he was all 'that's great! yes! very cool!'. Huh? What was that supposed to be? Being told that so much wasn't it too much? And then he had some issue with equipment and asked to go again. When the director saw my costume first he also went 'huh wow!' And the place was so narrow.

After that they moved to the merch items for this events. F passed them their own items and Kyo just kept holding the choker, almost like being frozen.

Meanwhile Kaoru said that there's no special meaning behind deciding to produce the pouch. Then, Kyo, asked about the choker, reacted.

Kyo: isn't this super cool?

(and then again)

Kyo: it's seriously cool. It's super cool. ...it's super cool. ...it's super cool.

(all the time just holding and looking at it)

F: about the embossing?

Kyo: not that, it's just super cool.

Then F announced they will move to the part with questions from fans. He divided the question sheets and passed them to everyone. But Kyo just kept moving to the next page, next page, next page...

F (trying to avoid silence😂): there were many questions on similar topics, I grouped some of them, many people asked about a movie you saw recently, movie you enjoyed.

Ka: I saw 'Hansekai', a Japanese movie.

Kyo: (after a moment) I watched 'Videodrome'.

He told us a bit about the plot, that you start questioning there what is real when watching. He said it's an older movie, and I didn't catch it but there was some connection with Robocop? He said he's also watching 'Friends' and Netflix's 'Dracula'.

After that Kaoru read a question from a fan: 'F seems to be really loved by all members and staff, but can you tell us how do you actually feel about him?'

Ta kept it cool just saying F is his kohai (younger friend/colleague). Kaoru, too, said that F is cool. But then it was time for Kyo ('s rant)🤣

Kyo: I would like to say you're cool, but there are those things I told you you should try to work on. You say you can eat anything, that's okay, but the way you eat is just, too eager (talking about his eating manners), you're even biting your lips, you also ask me about things when you don't really care, and then you reply with 'yeah yeah'. Don't do it. Saying 'yeah' once is fine, but saying 'yeah yeah' is too much.

F: I'll be careful. ...any questions you'd like to read?

Kyo (just kept moving on to the next paper, next question, next, next): nothing good.

Kaoru to the rescue picked a question, but had comments.

Ka: 'I'm moving the day after tomorrow and I'm curious bout the life with many people together (in a big group). How is it when you have to stay together?' Is there a connection between this and moving?

He talked about touring abroad and spending time together in a bus, but they just go to sleep soon. But there are more chances to talk before the shows.

Ta: 'can you recommend us any good restaurants in Osaka?'

nothing from the band members besides heavy thinking😂

Ta: 'which do you like better, takoyaki or okonomiyaki?'

Ka: I like both, but I don't eat them much. Monja(yaki) is better though.

Kyo: Monja is good, but choboyaki, from Kyoto, is the best.

Ta: I like both.

F: I eat everything. But abroad it's more difficult.

Kyo: ...the kebab chicken story.

He told us about the time when they were touring, he always stays on the bus so he would ask a roadie to go get him something to eat. He was thinking about eating McDonalds, but then F suddenly said 'let's do kebab!'. After F said that it's not like he could say he wanted McDonalds.

F laughed but got scolded by Kyo.

Kyo: I told you not to laugh like that! Like just a moment ago!

Kaoru brought up that they played at Osaka Jo Hall on this day in the past. They talked about some trouble they had and the venue staff being angry at them.

Kyo: I don't remember anything from that day. I deleted it from my memory.

F: but you chose I'll and Zan for your audiostream.

Kyo: I wanted to do it for my setlist. But then I saw on twitter few fans wrote they want me to do it, I got upset and almost changed it. Almost. In the end nowadays it's something we wouldn't do.

Ta: 'anything you're into now fashionwise?'

Kao (after thinking): nothing really. ...but I'm not wearing socks today.

F stood up to check.

Kyo: You're THAT interested???

F: just wanted to see what it looks like.

Kyo: that's really weird.

F: 'what's the 'fashion point' for you today (the main idea of your look)?

Kyo: well, what do you think?

F: pink?

Kyo: the whole outfit, you're dead!😂

F: ...but even your socks are pink?

Kyo: you really think pink is the main idea?  Look at my hair, green, I couldn't wear this outfit if I had black hair. It's about total balance! You're really a weird one.

F: 'winter is a nabe season, so what is your favorite nabe?'

Ka ...talked a lot about different types of nabe to make at home.

Kyo: nothing in particular.

F: what nabe do you want to eat now?

Kyo: what do you think?

F: k...kimchi nabe?

Kyo: I was going to say you're dead if you say something else than kimchi nabe.

F (laughing): I got it right?? But I wanted to hear I'm dead😂

Ta: I like chanko nabe.

Ta: 'what's your favorite tea?'

Ka: don't know, I drink a lot of jasmin tea, but I just buy it in a bottle.

Kyo: any tea is okay.

F: I drink Tokucha (for dieting benefits)

(there's one question here when I zoned out) *found my missing bit: there was a question about the name for their fans, toriko. It came from a poster of Die from MACABRE era, fully dressed up, it said 'I'll make you into my slave'.

F: 'what's your favorite alcohol?'

Ka: wine, Napa Valley, I think I talked about it with Mr.Higuchi (at the Pia VIP meeting).

Kyo: I don't really drink now.

He said he used to buy some stuff to make drinks, cocktails, but doesn't drink now.

F: 'what's the most fun moment or something interesting you've done recently?'

Ka: so we've never played here before, at Zepp Namba. When we arrived we talked together in the dressing room. It was nice to have a chance to chat.

Kyo: same really.

Next, F talked about the additional streamed event and the filming.

Ka told us he felt funny when filming (with motion capture) because one of the sensors to record his movement was exactly where he usually plays the guitar so he had to hold the guitar a bit higher than normal (he showed us how it looked and it was quite funny).

Kyo said that when he was filming, and he went second, Die was first, they had to wear costumes like a Mojimoji-kun (like a black skin tight onesie), he felt Die looked much better, and it really made him feel bad, that his style was too 'minimal'. He felt shocked and didn't really like the filming.

F asked everyone to join them on New Year's Eve and next asked band members for the last comments.

Kaoru: We're not able to do concerts and it's very difficult now to gather together like this, so I'm really grateful you all came. We're thinking a lot about what we can do next year.

Kyo: It must have been difficult to come here today, I'm sorry. And 'おおきに・ookini・thank you/sorry for the trouble.

F: oh sudden Kansai dialect.

Kyo: I'm from Kansai.

F: It's fine if Kansai person uses Kansai dialect.

Kyo (turned to fans again): ookini.

Kyo waved to the audience, then they stood up and stood looking at fans a bit, bowed and finally left.

Dragon Ball Apocrypha

I liveblogged Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in 2019.  Near the end, a few people asked if I was going to do GT or Super and I said no, mainly because I wanted to finish in one year, but also because I don’t consider those series to be part of the true DBZ canon.  Also, I tend to think of the other stuff to be small and insignificant.

Except, there’s a lot more of it now than there used to be.   It occurred to me one day that if I did cover all the other stuff, it would probably take me as long as it did to cover DB & DBZ.    But I never sat down and added it all up, so tonight I think I’ll just do that now.

Let me be clear: I’m not planning to liveblog any of this stuff.   I may do it sometime in the future, but I don’t want anyone taking this post as some sort of promise.  I’m just making a list.

Looking it over, I’d say enough time has passed that I could see me re-watching GT and Super and actually having something new to say about them someday.   I gotta say, though, there is not much here for me to look forward to, aside from checking boxes off a bucket list.   It’d be fun to see the smoking Korean Puar puppet, rewatching the Tournament of Power, uh, that scene where Goku holds Bee in his arms and gets his face licked.   Wow, I’m really reaching here... uh, Cell started showing up in Super DBH, so that’s probably neat?

But my original thought still stands.  You add all this up, and you have 305 episode/chapter thingies, and 12 movie/special thingies.  Not quite as big as Dragon Ball/DBZ but big enough to qualify as a franchise in itself.

Hypothetically speaking, if I actually went through all of this in a one-year span, I feel like a lot of it would just be me bitching and moaning about all the mistakes and missed opportunities in the material.    There’s some good stuff throughout, but it’s so diluted by the bad-to-meh stuff that I’m not sure it would be much fun to write or read.   The nice thing about 2019 was that anytime I complained about a bad episode I knew I had 20 or 30 awesome ones waiting for me later on.  There’s plenty of people on the internet complaining about Dragon Ball without me.   I’d need to find a way to keep it fresh.

Piffy Watches Otherside Picnic

I respect Otherside Picnic’s attempt to be a horror anime and a wlw romance-adventure anime at the same time. The result is an anime that I enjoy! As a wlw romance-adventure anime! But the horror... is missing the mark for me.

It doesn’t really know how to build tension or dread, and openly undermines its horror by drawing attention to the lack of stakes. Episode 5 legitimately gives us a conversation that boils down to “Why do we keep recklessly endangering our lives?” “Together we have plot armor so there’s no stakes and no consequences uwu.” It’s like Toriko knows she’s in a romance-adventure anime while Sorawo knows she’s in a trying-to-be-horror one.

And the thing is that you have to buy into the “there are no stakes” interpretation to still like Toriko, because otherwise she’s both appallingly selfish and suicidally stupid, neither of which are good looks for one half of the couple I’m supposed to be rooting for. This wouldn’t be nearly as egregious if they’d been making some sort of progress on Toriko’s goal, but they’re no closer than when they’d started.

I’m partway through episode 6, and so far it’s got this distinct feeling of separation between the Marines and the girls, where the Marines are actually in a survival horror scenario while Toriko and Sorawo are just tourists. It does not help that Toriko and Sorawo keep doing stupid death-flaggy things and keep coming out unscathed anyway. I’m not complaining that they come out unscathed; in fact, I’ll be quite upset if either of them die later. But drawing attention to the plot armor like that is still not great.

You can create tension in the presence of plot armor. You just have to shift the question from if the protagonists will survive to how the protagonists will survive/solve their problem/make progress. For example, Ginko, the protagonist of Mushishi, pretty much always comes out of his encounters with the supernatural completely unscathed, but it’s still interesting because each episode presents him with a problem to solve in a unique way.

The pieces of a really great horror-romance-adventure are all here. They just need to use those pieces more effectively.

Yearly drama recap

Drama breakdown: 14 kdramas 12 chinese/taiwanese dramas 12 Japanese dramas Since the mid year one I’ve watched 15 more dramas so I guess I slowed down lol but I spent a lot of time watching short dramas on youtube that I refuse to count in this list if you look at the second half breakdown it becomes 8 Jdramas 4 cdramas 5 (really 4 because I was almost done w/ angel’s last love) kdramas where # of jdramas > # of cdramas == # of kdramas  (although I definitely spent more time watching cdramas due to their insane number of episodes and the fact that I made it 20+ episodes into multiple dramas before dropping/taking a break *cough* Kings Avatar, Love is Deep *cough*) Currently watching

Will probably end up dropping love the way you are but we’ll see. I don’t know what it is but I haven’t been able to to actually watch an airing kdrama since the end of the summer (thank you to my roommates for making me watch extraordinary you) so I’ve been filling the time they would take by rewatching Mad Dog, A Poem A Day, Come and Hug Me and a bunch of others from last year. A lot of my dramas watched this year are not from 2019 which makes sense because overall I think last year’s dramas were much better than this year’s oof

what is toriko?

bear in mind i’ve only watched the anime but everything in it is pretty much confirmed as CANON (i think maybe im not too sure i haven’t read the manga)

oh yeah before you proceed there’s spoilers for the anime so if you haven’t watched the anime uh please proceed with caution because i might ruin this for people instead of just dragging them in

((this really ran away from me sorry))

this is entirely skewed from my point of view, but really do want people to enjoy the show without all this weird context below, so please dont take any of this heart and just disregard it as crazy fan talk

On the surface it’s a shonen food anime revolving around a gourmet hunter Toriko (who spends over half of the show shirtless and eating food)

who likes to eat a lot and basically wants to eat everything in the world (this is a world where you can walk outside and there is food. Like candy trees or walking roasting meat). One of the side characters is this little chef Komatsu who tags along with Toriko on his weird crazy death-defying grocery runs into the wild wild world

There are some other characters too, like the Four Heavenly Kings (in which Toriko is one) who are all gourmet hunters looking for ingredients in the wild and also this group of villans who want to control the world through food and this super cool knife sharpener and a lot of food

oh and this guy he’s pretty cute

but dont be fooled by this show’s premise

BECAUSE IT’S JUST A GIANT GAY BARA HAREM REVOLVING AROUND THIS TINY EMOTIONAL CHEF AND HOW EVERYONE WANTS A PIECE OF HIM

THERE IS SO LITTLE A NUMBER OF THE CHARACTERS THAT I REMEMBER NOT LIKING KOMATSU

IF TORIKO’S SUPERPOWER WAS HIS SENSE OF SMELL AND VORACIOUS APPETITE, KOMATSU’S WAS THE ABILITY TO CONVERT SOMEONE INTO HIS HAREM TO LIKE HIM

HE’S LIKE A BLACK HOLE OF FRIENDSHIPNESS, WHERE NO ONE CAN ESCAPE - LITERALLY ONE GUY DID A COMPLETE 180 AFTER TALKING SHIT ABOUT HIM TO IMMEDIATELY HELPING HIM

I LOVE KOMATSU SO MUCH WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST RENAME ‘TORIKO’ TO ‘KOMATSU’

AND IF YOU COMPARE THE BEGINNING OF THE ANIME TO THE END YOU CAN SEE HOW THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TORIKO AND KOMATSU EVOLVES FROM “haha hope you wrote your will” TO “I will fuck you up if you so much as look at him”

AT ONE POINT HE BASICALLY PROPOSES TO HIM (vegetable sky arc) AND THE ONLY THING MISSING IS THAT THERE IS NO KISSING, THE ROMANCE IS JUST THERE

ugh sorry for the all caps but i just have so many emotions and probably not all that great points about the anime (cause the fight scenes kinda sucks but the ending themes are catchy and the show leaves me hungry 99% of the time)

the fandom is so tiny and supportive and everyone gets along because as far as i’ve seen it’s less than ten people contributing fanart or fanfics every month or so and there’s zero criticism and everyone is free to do their own interpretations of the characters and it makes me so happy

oh also komatsu adopts a baby penguin when he got orphaned

LOOK AT HIM HE CLEARLY HAS GREAT MATERNAL INSTINCTS

and i am getting around to commenting/putting reviews on all the fanfic i’ve read because there is not nearly enough appreciation put into the effort of creating something for a tiny starving fandom

point of the matter is:

I love Komatsu and will shamelessly ship him with (almost) everyone

would love to talk to people about possible backstories/theories on komatsu because???? i can’t find anything on him??? no backstory whatsoever??? this also applies to everyone in the toriko universe

I will be eternally grateful for every toriko fanart that is sent my way, because it is obviously a blessing (even ocs come talk to me about ocs)

actually scratch that i would love it if you guys talk to me about your ocs no matter if they’re yours originally or for a fandom

Rushed dad haircut for everybody!

SO I was feeling nostalgic so I sat down and read the whole of Bleach these past few days...

It was good!

Turns out I had only missed a couple chapters in the middle of the last arc. Seems I was following these series more than I though and with good reason, I remembered that I used to really like this and I still do. Love the fights, the whole 600 different types of techniques and weapons thing and pretty much how all the characthers looks.

Now I´m with you all that yeah I´m not buying that ending cause...

Yeah I was seeing a complete different couple there, Kubo...

Either way, it was fun. Later I´ll finish watching the anime. I had to finish the latino dub which sadly only covers about 200 episodes and I sincrely doubt they´ll ever finish it just like Toriko...or Naruto...or One Piece...man, can´t remember a single anime that has been dubbed full these past few years here...

Ah whatever, let´s jsut enjoy how cute Rukia was the entire manga =D
