It is sometimes almost unbearable to watch old media and see how the women are written. Some characters (and then, only some of the time usually) are pleasantly almost better written than one would hope for, but sometimes. Oh my god. Sometimes. The hero tries to help a group of refugees off of his spaceship and gets them to their destination on a pretty much empty planet, and then the young, pretty woman (who has three kids, mind you) among them immediately decides to go and sabotage the hero's ship to force him to stay with her, something that would warrant at least some anger, but certainly also a punch if she were a man, but since she's ~a girl~ no. She just gets to act this way with no social consequence. She says she doesn't love her companion (who asked you to???) and doesn't want the hero to leave her here alone (not his problem?????). She gets lectured by her companion (not a lover or family, just a guy she was escaping with but who somehow acts like he's in charge of her, and so does she) like an unruly child, as he tells her that the hero saved them and then she goes and does something like this to him (which, yeah!! Precisely! You'd think an adult woman wouldn't recklessly do this and expect the hero would then trust and love her and yet!! Apparently this is not a deal-breaker in and of itself since she actually ends up with this guy companion!). Then her kids comfort her (what the fuck??).

Anyway, I've seen the worst Battlestar Galactica series (the old one) episode yet, and this damn character was only one of my grievances with it, but uurggh I can't stand how they write women sometimes, I really can't.

For instance I hate how a weird guy who is obviously sus as hell enters the plot, and of course a woman will immediately be seduced/influenced by him even if he's twice her age and not appealing at all.

this na’ziyah harris case has been tearing me up so bad and I just can’t get over it. it’s so heartbreaking but not surprising how older black women will coddle predators but villify young black girls for things they have no control over. even if it’s never been to the extent of full SA, I feel like a majority of us in the community at some point has experienced predatory behavior from an older man or being called ‘fast’ or ‘grown’ simply because we developed faster. and the moms, aunties, grannies, etc blamed us for what a grown adult has done or said. not to mention this sick bastard gave a 4 y/o VD and hurt his own daughter (I couldn’t specify if it was the same child but either way it’s disgusting) ik they’re turning his nasty ass every way but loose in that fucking cell but it still doesn’t change the fact that he stole all of these poor babies’ innocence and na’ziyah’s life. I really hate how our ppl move sometimes man…that whole family failed her and I pray one day she can be found and laid to rest 💔

& i learned after i went through all of this that my grandfather cheated on my grandmother for years when they were young. my uncle left my aunt for another women & they had been seeing each other for years secretly. my other uncle talks CONSTANTLY about how he hates married life. my OTHER uncle has emphasized how hard it is to be loyal to his wife but “i do it. i’m loyal”; like, do you want a gold fucking star???

and so, so many women i know have been through divorce because of infidelity. or have at least one story of being cheated on.

i can’t take it, man. i loved someone with everything i had & more, and all i fucking learned was to never do that again. and i see it in everyday life how little men actually love & respect their partners.

i don’t think there’s any going back or regaining my trust in men…..

being cheated on in so many big & small ways has really fucked me up beyond repair. i can’t even fantasize about being in a healthy relationship bc it feels so unrealistic that someone would ever be loyal to me. that i would ever be enough for someone i love

that’s how i feel about theon re: the point is that they’re a better character bc they’re so morally reprehensible. i think there’s a lot more complexity in the fact that theon in the books is unsettled by the raping happening when he’s reaving along the northern coast, rapes kyra, a woman who had been a previous willing lover who he seemed at least mildly fond of, when he is feeling low, and then experiences sexual abuse himself from ramsay, which seems to trigger some buried trauma over euron raping him (or perhaps observing euron raping someone else) as a child. it’s this long thread, this full picture, of why and how theon has come to have these views of sex & violence. is he significantly grosser about women in the books? yes, he is reprehensible and disgusting, in a very much sex criminal sort of way. but that’s the point - he doesn’t deserve what ramsay does to him (what euron might have done to him) because no one “deserves” this sort of abuse, the universe is not dead set on punishing bad guys for bad things, this just happens, people just experience horror in a way that is structurally pointed and also quite random. it just happened to be pointed at theon this time. he was awful and he did awful things and that doesn’t mean getting reek’d is something he deserved.
