Incidental Tinies

A g/t concept we all use (mostly in daydreams) but rarely discuss!

G/t is kinda unique in that it can tell any story it wants and still fit the trope. Even if that story is mainly happening to someone else!

You can have a huge epic story with an ensemble cast of 30+ characters...But the entire story is told from the perspective of a tiny that they happened to pick up along the way!

This tiny may not actually... do anything in the plot/story. Their entire contribution to the epic world-saving quest could just be moral support. Maybe they act as a "therapy tiny" helping the others through their panic attacks and PTSD or simply acting as a stim. Regardless, the main cast of characters adore their tiny friend. Even if they get totally left out of serious plot-heavy moments.

This means that you can have all of the soft, fluffy interactions without trying to revolve the entire story around size stuff. And by telling it from the perspective of a tiny, you ensure that all interactions are still g/t (even if the conversation and drama is about humans)

You may be thinking "That seems really specific, I don't think we all use this trope. You're exaggerating"

...Okay but have you ever added a borrower OC to an existing story like Fire Emblem or Genshin Impact? Hell, it doesn't even need to be an OC. Just take any beloved side character or NPC that doesn't do much in the source material, shrink 'em down and have them ride along for original plot! You've probably created an "incidental tiny" without really thinking about it!

But the dynamic should absolutely be discussed and explored!! I think there are three main reasons it works so well:

A tiny can be a proxy for home: If the heroes go into a dangerous situation, they likely won't willingly bring the tiny. But now they have a helpless little friend waiting back at the camp/base for everyone! And if their day isn't dangerous, just stressful? A character might come back, kick off their shoes, and start petting the tiny to themselves calm down.

It leads to size-angst as a B-Plot: Sure, the main story may be about a band of misfits trying to solve some problem. But if the tiny doesn't play an active role? They might start to feel useless. Because when things get serious? all they can do is watch... Or maybe the tiny gets hurt! And one of the main characters becomes very overprotective! To the point where they try to control or cage the tiny for their safety. Or what if the heroes realize that the tiny is actually in more danger with them, than they would be out in the wild? There are so many ideas to explore and the Tiny's lack of agency only enhances them, not detracts. Of course, this angst would happen alongside the main story (and likely at the worst possible time)

It's just easier to write: I love g/t fics, and there are many incredible fics where the entire story comes from the size dynamic. But I think we can all agree: it's much easier to write an engaging story if you have another, more flexible, plot that you can shift over to when the story needs conflict and intrigue. In the case of "incidental tinies"? You have the main plot, then the slice-of-life and/or size-angst.

Sorry for the long post, but I feel like this is one of those g/t tropes everyone knows about, but no one every talks about.

Greetings from a Fan, I felt compelled to send this message after reading your posts regarding Queen's Gambit. My intent is not to upset or harm you, but I sincerely apologize if I do so nonetheless. I just wanted to say how much I absolutely *adore* the Ouroboros series. It's one of my favorites of all time across all the fandoms I'm interested in. It's also the reason I fell head over heels in love with the Obi-Wan/Anakin/Padme pairing. You've written the characters so incredibly well and I just cannot get over your amazing worldbuilding. I am an absolute sucker for the way you wrote Padme and the rich culture/history you created for Naboo. Those little details just added so much breath and flavor to your stories that to this day I remain speechless as to what you've created. With regards to Obi-Wan, oh my dear lord, what a heartbreaking masterpiece you created. The sheer level of love and anguish you brought forth after he lost Anakin was just devasting. He's such an incredibly complex character and you did a smashingly exceptional job with him. You really did him and his relationship with Anakin justice and I truly thank you for that. And Anakin, what can I say, there are so many layers to Anakin that there's never an easy way of writing him. But through his relationships with Obi-Wan and Padme, we can peel back those layers and you really took the time and care to do that. The entire series was an incredible concept in it's totality, and I love weird alternative universe/time-travel/fix-it fics. I will eternally lament that the series will never be finished because I would have loved to have read what happens in the next entry of the series which is where Obi-Wan fell to the Dark side (unless I'm mistaken). Nonetheless, I like to think that in the end they have their happy ending with one another (wherever it may have led them) and I thank you for sharing and posting this series with us. I know it meant a great deal to me and I would like you to know how I much I do sincerely mean that. Thank you. ❤️

Aww, thank you, I'm flattered to hear that! I know that Wake and Gambit (as well as the ancillaries Tales and Sound) are very loved stories for a lot of people, even when I get grief for them, which has been going on for more than a decade now. I'm always very glad to hear that readers do enjoy those stories.

The third Ouroboros story, which takes place in the universe that Padme arrives in during the last scene of Gambit, was supposed to be called All Along the Watchtower. There are bits and pieces of it in the all along the watchtower tag dating back about a decade now. It is a universe where Obi-Wan fell to the dark side and a bunch of other stuff happened as a result -- the three universes in Ouroboros are all meant to be the worst fears of the main three characters, thus canon (Wake) being Anakin's (he goes dark side and kills everyone he loves), Gambit being Padme's (she becomes a warmongering demagogue who causes a Jedi to betray himself for her), and Watchtower being Obi-Wan's (he goes dark side and is responsible for the downfall of the Republic and the Jedi Order). This is the most recent summary of what I remember that I was thinking; it went through a lot of development over the course of ten years, and as late as 2021 I was still trying to back into it via Rebels: the alternate universe where Ezra had been during The Starry Crown is the Watchtower 'verse, during the point in time where the Wake trio was there -- a.k.a. the Rebellion era, so they're also time traveling again. The Wake trio had all ended up in different locations in the Watchtower 'verse: we see Padme where she ended up at the end of Gambit, Anakin was on Coruscant, Obi-Wan was on Tatooine, and they're all dragged into the political events of that universe, which are very different from Wake, canon, or Gambit.

The intention was always for the Wake trio to end up back in their own universe, probably picking up Rex along the way; the base Wake universe is obviously suffering from Code Name Retribution, but the situation is not as bad as it could have been.

Marius has ties to the Talamasca (Raymond Galant), not only through his maker (though that is indeed a rather strong tie) but also through his contacts to it through the ages.

I absolutely believe that some of his painting will play a rather important role still in the show(s), especially since the set design emphasizes their meaning so much.

So yes. Marius' painting(s) in Dubai. I would bet anything that there are (at least a few) more in the basement. I would bet a lot that there is more than furniture in the basement, too. (In fact I think @cbrownjc might be right on the track in their fic installment, but that just as a note, this aligns to 99% with what I expect as well^^).

It's just the setup of it all. It carries meaning.

Like, Armand wouldn't hang that painting if some things haven't happened. And, as much as he loves/hates/wants Lestat... would he say Lestat is a god? Then again, him being sun-proof (and Louis not) puts us in such an interesting time frame in the books.... and that little easter-egg/hint with the "Book of Hours", too... because remember where that was mentioned?? Right, in Memnoch. By DAVID. David, who implies that they, aka the Talamasca, were tracking said Book of Hours... which had been lost in Berlin in the Second World War. (Btw, I will forever and for all time adore them if Louis just happens to lose some luggage with that darn book on his and Claudia's travels. Seriously. Please.)

Fareed and Seth... and Gregory. And Teskhamen. And Raymond. Hesketh. The Talamasca. Gregory's pharmaceutical empire and Fareed's research. (Which could easily produce special medicine for Daniel). Seth, Akasha's son. The paintings in the living room depicting "mother and daughter"... and "twins".

It's all connected.

And I mean.... knowing the last books... it's not really a far stretch that Marius is involved with the Talamasca. Leads them even, maybe :))))

The show is building up the lore in a quite incredible way, imho. I just hope they do not lose sight of all the threads, because this... if it unfolds over the next seasons as I suspect it will??? ... will be breathtaking.

I've wanted to ask this for a while: I absolutely adore how you write action scenes/sequences in your fics, especially in Asymmetrical Warfare. I can easily and clearly picture what's going on in my head, and the action is SO suspenseful. Literally, the chase and fight scenes have me on the edge of my seat *chef's kiss*. As someone trying their hand at writing fanfiction, I'd love to hear if you have any specific tips or methods for writing action. I also wanted to say how much I love your characterization of Jason. It's literally a breath of fresh, life-giving air among the muck that is current DC comics and fanon alike :)

I love sharing my writing with people who love Jason like I do. 🩵 I'm so glad you're enjoying Asymmetrical Warfare and my action scenes in particular (they're my pride and joy). I'm sorry it took me so long to answer your ask, but I had to really think about it (I wasn't actually consciously aware I had a writing method, lol). I only started writing fanfiction in the last year, so I honestly consider myself a novice in this.

I can easily and clearly picture what's going on in my head

I've gotten variations of this comment before, and I think it reflects my knowing exactly what's happening in a scene, down to extremely minute details. You have to what you're trying to convey in order to do so clearly. This is also where practice comes in. I'm a novice creative writer, but I've had years of experience with technical writing. That means lots of practice conveying complex concepts in a limited number of words. It gets easier with repetition (especially the self-editing bit).

After some reflection, I realized I have a three-stage approach to constructing an action sequence. I start with a rough draft that conveys the feel and general idea of the action. Then I add very explicit details describing the physical movements (this is where I do research and sometimes get help from a beta). Lastly, I focus on adding sensory details and editing for tempo and flow. Here's an example from Chapter 3 of Harm Reduction, I started with:

While working on the next version, I found a couple excellent parkour videos on YouTube and watched them over and over in slow motion to figure out all of the movements. I also had my brainstorming buddy read parts of the chapter to see if they were interpreting my text correctly.

At this point, the paragraph does a decent job of conveying exactly what Jason is doing, but it isn't very engaging. From here, it's just ruthless self-editing, moving words and sentences around, trying different ideas, abusing my thesaurus, etc. I usually listen to music (sometimes the same song repetitively) that has the right tempo and dramatic feel for what I'm trying to convey while I'm working.

I often combine sensory details with descriptive actions and short, punctuated sentences to build tension. You can see me adding that above with "A kaleidoscope of roof and sky whirls wildly around him. Jason uncoils."

The last piece of advice I'll offer is to take your time. The above process takes me many, many drafts. For example, it took me fourteen days to write Chapter 3 of Harm Reduction. There are countless versions auto-saved in my Google Drive history (I stopped counting at 32).

Something About Us - Post-Fic Meta (Chapters 11-16)

It's done!! I still can't believe it's over tbh. I've been working on this with uni since last year, and it's been a huge undertaking but one I've absolutely loved every step of the way. Thank you all so much for your mindblowing support, and I hope you enjoyed how the fic ended!

Time for a meta post. As always, I'm including my notes under a cut since this post will be long!

Chapter by Chapter Thoughts

Chapter 11

Ahhh, angst. Fade wasn't trying to be nasty in these chapters where they were separated. She genuinely, whole-heartedly believed that she was doing the best, kindest thing that would keep Neon safe. She hasn't had the best luck in loving people before, and it's easy for her to believe that all the people she's lost were lost because of her. She's the common denominator between all of them, and Fade's nightmares only make it feel more real.

In my fics, Neon's relationship with her mother is a complicated one. It's something I care quite deeply about and this fic gave me some room to explore it, which was fun! They're messy and don't really understand each other properly, and they butt heads when they're both strong-willed, stubborn women who have different ideas of what Neon should do in any given situation. It doesn't mean they don't love each other, and both of them would kill for each other, but family love can be complicated and messy. I wanted to push this further by also talking about Imelda's relationship with her mother, and how that relationship is so different to how much Neon adored her Lola. Lola raised them both, but she did it so differently and it made things pretty difficult for them all to cope with as adults.

I really liked getting to explore the slow progression of Fade's friendship with Cypher in this fic. At the start she snapped at him for just daring to suggest that she might be befriending Neon. In this chapter she let him... *gasp* talk to her while she's alone and brooding over her heartbreak, and then went to him to accept his offer of company after she died. A shocking development. I love her emotionally constipated stupid ass.

Fade's first death is something I find REALLY interesting to think about. I wrote an entire fic series about the concept way back at the start of my ao3 account! I don't think she fears death itself necessarily, but I think she'd find death terrifying for what it would mean for Aykut. She can't die before finding him, and if she did, who would remember her? What was she good for if she couldn't protect the one person she'd promised to? Juicy stuff.

Chapter 12

Buko pandan mention! Thank you to my friend for mentioning it to me. Perfect break-up misery comfort food.

It was fun to include a little slice of Jett's POV in this chapter! I really like her friendship with Neon, but I think she's reduced a lot of the time to being only a Fade hater when there's more to her than that. She's a good friend! She's passionate and loving and caring, and she's really giving, even if she gives while being loud and brash and kind of obnoxious. She's that way for a reason, with her own walls built from past pain and abandonment - a lot like Fade, but instead of hiding herself with edge and aggression, she hides it through being somewhat disagreeable.

Fade discovering Harbor and Astra were sleeping together was a fun callback to my freckle fic - the sibling to this fic, another collab project with Uni, and one of my first major projects! In that fic, Harbor caught them in the act, and this time, Fade got to do the same back to him. Payback.

Ohh the cliffhanger ending to this fic was something I've been looking forward to for SO long. We planned it in December 2023, so it's been PAINFUL keeping it a secret for so long! I'm so pleased with how these chapters played out and it was so fun to write.

Chapter 13

This chapter was a little brutal to write and there's not a lot to say about it. It was a lot of action sequences and things that are not my forte, but it was really important to the suspense of the situation to write it all out properly. Oddly enough, the graphic injury stuff was a lot easier to write, and it was pretty fun to work on.

That said, even though this chapter was hard to write, I'm really happy with how it came out! I think it tells the story succinctly and with enough suspense to keep it going. I hope it does, at least, and I'm satisfied enough when I read it back.

Fade breaking down and crying on Omen's shoulder is just another step in her journey to accepting actual friendship. She needs to learn to accept that people care about her and will support her when she needs it, and if she needs to suffer to get there, so help me I will make her suffer. Get hugged, feckless fool.

Chapter 14

Whew, big chapter. This one means a lot to me. Without going too far into detail, I suffered a leg injury some years ago that ended up having complications and made me severely sick for months. I could have died and was bedridden for months. My schoolwork suffered and I almost dropped out. I stopped taking part in many of my hobbies because I either was too weak to leave the house, or I was too afraid of another freak accident happening that might put me through that again. I developed agoraphobia after it that I'm still struggling with. Giving Neon something similar and writing her fighting for recovery was... meaningful, to say the least. It was emotional but empowering and I'm holding it very close to my very tired heart.

I bothered an irl doctor I know for info on treating sepsis for this chapter. The medication and treatment plan mentioned is ripped right from their study notes. I've had a fair amount of time spent in hospitals and it's really important to me to handle medical situations honestly but also with grace.

^ This has been a recurring thing in my fics - pretty much all my larger aus have had some kind of mention of serious and/or long-term medical care, because these guys keep getting into Situations, and also I just enjoy writing people who need help recovering and handling situations like that with care. Recovery and illness are often seen as ugly or gross, and I truly loathe that. Being chronically sick is awful to deal with. It's loud and infuriating and mortifying, but it's human. I rarely talk about the details of my illnesses because even among other chronically ill friends I often feel disgusting for explaining what happens in my body. I hate that this is how society conditions ill people to feel, pressuring them to hide away and to think less of themselves for things they can't control, so wherever I can, I want to give chronically ill people a little slice of respect. I want to represent long-term recovery as being something that isn't seen as gross or shameful, and something that isn't a statement on that person's worth.

Moving on from That Topic, this was finally the chapter that let them TALK LIKE ADULTS!! thank god. We've waited long enough.

It took almost losing Neon for Fade to accept that she wasn't doing the right thing. She'd genuinely believed it, but she was leaving Neon for the sake of protecting her. After seeing her almost die, it helped her realise that they're all at risk all the time thanks to their work. Whether Fade's in her life or not, she can't ensure Neon's safety. Keeping them apart and knowingly breaking her heart wouldn't help anything, and she's officially run out of reasons to stay away from her.

That said, she didn't expect Neon to forgive her. She apologised because she realised her mistake and Neon deserved an apology, not because she wanted something from her. She wanted Neon to know that she understood her wrongdoing now and it wasn't Neon's fault. It wasn't a statement on her company or her worth, and it wasn't something she'd done that had driven Fade away. Neon knew that, most of the time, but she needed to hear it.

Another Cypher friendship moment! Finally instead of just begrudgingly tolerating his presence, Fade went to him and asked for advice, and it ended up being really, really good advice. This is also kind of a funny callback to freckle fic, since in that fic she took Cypher's advice too literally and fucked up even worse with Neon. It was nice to be able to show his advice working out for once.

Fade's dream wasn't prophetic. She was just thinking about what Cypher said and she knew he was right - Aykut would want her to be happy. He left on the train as a way to disconnect the thought of him from her allowing herself to be happy. I know this can look like a metaphor for dying, but we don't know if he's alive or dead in this fic. Like canon, we don't know a thing about how or where he is.

Chapter 15

This chapter was a beast. My guideline for chapters was "around 10k or more", because I knew 10k was about the lowest I could go to fit in as much story progression as I wanted into each chapter, but I wasn't going to force them to stay short if a chapter needed longer. This one tested me and decided to be almost three times the length of a regular chapter. Yay!

It was SO NICE to write them being soft and fluffy. After so long spent fighting to get to this point, them being happy together felt earned.

This chapter was also fun because as time went by it went from "aww, sweet fluff" to "oh my god they're so horny. they literally just need to fuck and then they'll be normal again, it's that easy".

It was tough to choose who would catch them making out. I liked the idea of Skye for the comedy, but Uni suggested that Reyna would give us the chance to humanise her a bit. She's been a bit of an antagonistic figure in Neon's plotline, but it's a shame because she's not a villain. It's not as black and white as that, and it was a good idea to show the gentler, more sympathetic side to her. We decided to combine them to have that humanising moment for Reyna while also having the comedy from Skye.

I was looking forward to their second first time for SO LONG, it was so nice to write. I also drew some art for this scene but Tumblr would shoot me dead if I tried to post it (believe me, I already tried). The nsfw rules on this site are so inconsistent...

Chapter 16

Last chapter last chapter last chapter! And for once we ended on a whole chapter, not a short epilogue. This is pretty rare for my work, but this fic definitely needed it.

Neon being pretty bad at sex for a while after they get together is a bit of a staple in my headcanons. I can't imagine she's had much of it before. If she's had sex before in one of my aus, it's usually only with one or two people and they weren't great experiences (thanks to selfish partners and inexperience). Sex is a skill that everyone needs to learn and tune to each new partner, and I enjoy exploring that with Neon.

It's a little sad to end this fic on unresolved conflict between Neon and her mom, but I don't think it's something they'd get over that quickly. They'll work it out eventually, and her mom will come to understand that Fade makes Neon happy and is doing better than she did in the past, but it's not going to be a smooth road to get to that point.

The nightmare scene is pretty important - Fade's nightmares were one of the driving forces that led her to cutting Neon off completely for so long, but this time when she had a nightmare, she ran to her instead. It's important growth for her, but Neon couldn't know how significant it was since she doesn't know about Fade's nightmares. Fade doesn't think it'd be productive to tell her about them, and Neon doesn't see the point in opening up the past again when they've already agreed to move past it. They're here now, a thousand times better than they were, and they're learning how to handle their baggage together :)

The song Fade sang is Sarı Laleler by MFÖ. The lyrics are just too perfect... Fade did get her tulips...

If you've read more of my fics, you might recognise Neriman Teyze's name! She was mentioned in my party rock problems series and she's become a bit of a default stand-in for a "Fade's neighbour" character now.

Köri doesn't hate Neon because she did anything specific. He's a jealous mommy's boy and he doesn't like anyone taking Fade away from him. Maybe he thinks Neon's the reason Fade has to go away for long periods of time, or maybe he just doesn't like her being so close and touchy with her, but either way, he dislikes her because he's jealous of his mom. Silly cat. He'll get over it! Neon's patient with moody animals. She'll keep trying until he forgives her for this crime she didn't commit.

Ahh, how I love circle form. I've done this several times now, but I really love circling back to end a story the same way I started it. In this case, we started out with Fade taking about the sunrise when they first met, after the raid in Istanbul that went about as terribly as it could have gone, and we ended with Fade taking Neon to Istanbul to peacefully watch the sunrise.

I will recommend this to literally everyone if I had to choose a number one of my favs this would definitely be a contender. Female lead is cute and determined and Hyunjin….JESUS Hyunjin made me want to put my head through the wall at one point but he was literally just adorable after certain events. It’s so good full of Fluff angst and then occasional smut but not really a lot so good.)

Star lost with you and Only fools fall for you by @hyunjinspark (this counts as one cause it’s the same writer 😭) (I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS ABOUT ONLY FOOLS ITS LITERALLY AMAZING AND FRUSTRATING AT THE SAME TIME. Full of angst and smut if that’s your thing I really like this fic cause I’m in love with the enemies to lovers trope it’s so well written and I just can’t get over it. STAR LOST is still being written and the last update made me cry 😭 it draws you in and has so much going on I’m so invested like these people are real)

Maybe it’s not our fault by @cosmic-railwayxo (incomplete 🥲🥲🥲 unfortunately but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the wait if the writer gets back to it it’s so good. Exes au tbh and I love it so much there’s so many misunderstandings and heartbreak yet there’s fluffy warm moments ugh you’ll be rooting for them for such a long time and always find yourself looking back to see an update cause you have to see what happens next. Lol as you can see I couldn’t just pick 5 fics so I picked 5 writers 😭 but I find myself just enjoying a whole bunch of stuff and there’s one fic that I literally can’t find it’s older and about hyunjin but I think the writer deactivated it’s my fav fic and I’ll describe it for you but I wish I could link it cause it would be my legit number one but it’s about a struggling relationship with hyunjin he’s been distant not answering calls texts and the reader decided she had enough so she asks to take a break and he begs her not to, that he wants to be with her and he’s sorry so she gives him a second chance. Her best friend is Chan and there’s multiple parts to it. At one part they go to some party or something and hyunjin gets jealous she was hanging out with Chan so he makes it seem like he was flirting with some girl and the reader sees and storms out Chan gets rightfully pissed and tells him he fucked up for the last time and ugh it’s so angsty and good they do end up together but I can’t ever find it but I hope you enjoy reading those if you haven’t and if you have lmk which ones you like

Ok, I have never participated in one of these before, in spite of being on tumblr for like a third of my life lol, so bare with me please! I have no doubt this is going to be long and rambley! When I saw your tags on this asks meme I was like “What do you mean you don’t have a worthy fic output??? You have a million excellent fics out there?” and was earnestly shocked when I went over to ao3 and saw that you only had 10 Magicians fics. Now let me be clear, I am using the word “only” in the absolute LOOSEST sense, because as someone with a seemingly endless stack of wips constantly piling up in my docs who has never completed and posted anything longer than 8k, your treasure trove of masterpieces which include multiple fics in the double digit thousands is astoundingly impressive to me!!! But! I have re-read a few of your fics so many times that my brain has just a bunch of instances logged where I saw your name and went “mental note: one of the best writers in the Magicians fandom, part of the ultra cool club, maybe I should hold off on going through everything they’ve ever written right this very second so that I will have more from them to read on a rainy day.” So basically, the sheer awesomeness of your writing totally tricked me into not realizing that I have actually only read like 4 or 5 of your fics, and they dominated my brain enough to seem like a whole fandom’s worth. So um, with that in mind! I’ll actually ask the asks now lol

My favorite fic of yours

It is TIGHT, but I think I have to go with “just a touch of your love is enough” because that one permanently rewrote my brain chemistry and pretty much single handedly made start like a bunch of wips revolving around the concept of Quentin and Eliot being two people who were pretty ok with being in poly and open relationships until they went STUPID over each other. I’ve re-read it… maybe 5 times?

To my growing shame, I am realizing that I have been saving your multichap fics this whole time. I read parts 1 and 2 of your ‘evolve’ series tho, and while I struggle to differentiate between the amazingness of Quentin’s POV vs Mike’s POV, I really really just loved the way part one closed out? I lovedddd the outsider POV of watching the Queliot sex matter more than any other sex either of them has ever had, and I really adored the gentle leaving of Mike – a little bitter but mostly just mature – telling Q not to let Eliot go.

You simply cannot make me choose between Eliot and Quentin here; you write both of them so distinctly and so well!!!

As I’m sure you can tell by now, this ask is extremely biased toward the Magicians. I’m sure all your other fics are equally excellent, but I found you through the Magicians and you were one of the people instrumental in me fixating on the Magicians for the past… idk. At least 2 years. So I GOTTA go Queliot.

I feel like I have been saving ‘baby please come home’ for a really really long time. I just know it’s gonna wreck me lol! 

Something I remember vividly from reading one of your fics

Oh no, there are way too many options crashing in my brain for this one at once! Um! I think I have to chicken out and go a little more general: the way you write Quentin and Eliot’s interactions with each other just ticks all my boxes for them. The thing that always really sticks with me is how you do such a great job mixing and balancing them bantering with each other and genuinely being friends who like each other and spending time together, and the soul-crushingly intense romantic feelings they have for one another, the deeply painful, star bright pining! You are so good at blending those two components so seamlessly together, even in a single conversation, and I always when reading your fics am beset with that very specific feeling when every sentence you next read is EXACTLY the sentence you want to be reading, because the characters are so well drawn. 

What made me the most emotional after reading

You have such a knack in your writing for showing just HOW MUCH Quentin and Eliot love each other. I’m always blown away and enraptured by it. The moments that have made me the most emotional are the ones that highlight how almost tragic the intensity of that love is. Quentin in the very funny and very hot ‘they ain’t got a clue (can’t love me like you do)’ thinking how mean it is for Eliot to be hot around him, and Eliot’s desperation in “just a touch of your love is enough” to just make Quentin happy the whole time no matter what. You do an excellent excellent EXCELLENT job of depicting their love as borderline tortuous without it crossing the line over into something unhealthy, and it destroys me every time without fail. 

What I like the most about your writing

In addition to your killer characterization, your excellent banter and comedy, your really truly perfect smut writing skills for both the hot and the tender (and weaving plot and character into the sex scenes in an impeccable way that always keeps my ace-spec ass LOCKED in) I just really love all the minutia of your like sentence structure and rhythm and all that good stuff. Your writing style pulls me right along in such a way that I often forget I am reading and not just injecting the story directly into my veins, but every time I emerge from the pools of my delight it is to notice something like “ooo, that was just some really solid prose right there”. I love your stuttering staccato period usage when you are writing from Quentin’s pov, the way you use your sentence structure, rhythm and grammar to emphasize the character. 

A fic i’m excited for you updating/posting

Alright I categorically DO NOT want to make you feel pressured or bad about your unfinished works. Again, I have a million wips I haven’t started posting yet, and just in general I have lost interest in some of my works before and know how complicated that can feel, so I really don’t want to bring up any of your pieces without knowing if that is welcome or if you have lost interest in them. hello!!! i confess i have been putting off answering this just because once i did it would obviously vanish from my inbox, and it is genuinely one of the most thoroughly, generously detailed thoughts on my fic i have ever received, in over a decade of this little hobby. i'm genuinely so floored you would take the time to respond to this based off a little tag comment i made (that i did indeed make bc i know some amazing magicians' fic authors who have such profilic, sprawling output). i'm gonna save this and look at it whenever i have doubts that anyone cares if i continue with my little magicians fics, which i do intend to do! i tend to chip away at them every few months, coo over how much i love quentin and eliot, and then move on, but i will put something substantial out there one day i promise.

so to answer the rest of your questions! ahem:

definitely 'show a little faith', or thanksgiving fic as it's known in my head, is the primary victim of my fic pecking. i have the outline etc in my head it's just getting it out there on paper, as it were.

similar, the q as margo's assistant AU, written for best girl @coldbam and i have to give credit: was her idea in the first place. she had said she wished someone wrote something like it, and for that reason it was more of a burst of something i wrote to have something to give nicole on her birthday that year given our tragically perpetual long-distance friendship, and the story beats were a bit more nebulous. BUT it was really fun and i had enough direction that i could go back to it (and many notes on ideas for scenes, many of them run by nicole on the phone to ensure they aligned with her ~vision).

there's a few longer WIPs/ongoing ideas that aren't on ao3 at all, but very much exist in fits and starts of writing and EXTENSIVE notes lmao, as is my way.

an AU where q is a TA/professor, and eliot and margo went to fillory prior to quentin enrolling and now he is an advisor who has to go back to take a class for reasons (they need a minor mending spell for some kind of kingdom reason; margo is king here). the idea came about just bc i'll be honest, professor/student pairings aren't totally my thing but i think eliot would get a lot of horny mileage out of it, especially bc q would be like "stop that's problematic!!!" (while also horny secretly). age gaps aren't also super my thing but especially eliot and q being only a year or so apart is very important to their dynamic to me also, hence q only being a TA or a very new professor at that (with maybe eliot and margo being in fillory for a few years at that point).

oh man, the fic lovingly titled 'fillory boy AU' that got so so much attention in my group chat with nicole above and beloved @kenshivshow. it's a similar concept to @hmgfanfic's INCREDIBLE fic, where q is a boy from fillory and eliot marries him instead of fen, but mine is a lot sillier and hornier and much less sprawling and impressive. i love it a lot and it has a lot of it written.

my favourite one to write is such a hard question. i am a corny loser who genuinely loves writing all fic bc otherwise i wouldn't do it. but:

just a touch of your love is enough was my first big bang so i gotta give that a shout out, plus the amazing art by @lu-does-eurovision!

they ain't got a clue (can't love me like you) gave me the chance to write a plotline from probably my favourite show, grey's anatomy, and i also managed to get it all out in a weekend bc i was so inspired. a thrilling feeling i will continue to chase forever!

Let's start with the stories. So, I don't trust myself with multi-chapter stories, it takes me forever to write one-shots already, so (almost) none of these are out yet. You can read the ones that are out over here.

Operation Multifail. Three-chapter story where Marinette tries to convince Chat Noir to stop thinking about Multimouse by fighting as Multimouse, badly, on purpose, so he'll think she's incompetent. It doesn't quite work out.

Kwamidaddy Adrien. Assumes Marinette is the guardian. For reasons, Chat Noir has to take the Kwamis for a while. They all promised not to tell him anything about her private life. Shouldn't be a problem, right? This one may also end up being like three chapters

Chlogami Sabrina's Wedding. I think I posted a rough outline for chapter one here: It's Sabrina's wedding, and drunk Chloé confides in also-drunk Kagami about her complicated relationship to Sabrina, how she's happy for her but also jealous but also knows that because of their baggage, it could never work, while Kagami also has feelings about Adrien's and Marinette's upcoming wedding. I have like half a first draft of a first chapter here and absolutely no clue where this might go next.

Wings AU - Learning to Land. So there's a wings AU concept for Miraculous that keeps coming up every now and then. A bit too angsty for me, but when I first heard it, I thought it was a fun idea to talk about aerodynamics and world building in that context, specifically where Marinette teaches sheltered Adrien how to fly.

Plagg Interview. Now we're deep in the dregs, I picked a folder at random. Alya publishes interviews with someone close to Chat Noir's thinking. That someone: Plagg, who has been bribed with cheese. Marinette is not happy, but she can't say anything because Alya can't learn she's Ladybug. Yeah, this one's been sitting in my folder for a while. As have the others. Probably a one-shot.

Stuff I'm looking forward to in each fic:

The whole thing is based around big action set pieces. Three big Akuma fights, one in each chapter, which Marinette tries to fail at in different ways, and fails to fail, so to speak. I have no idea how to write these well, but I think that can be fun. Super-unpopular opinion: Fanfiction has way too much angst and romance and not enough action, and I'm definitely part of the problem myself.

Adrien interacting with the Kwamis who imprint on him as their father should be really adorable. As should the Kwamis trying their best to get Adrien and Marinette to marry (without revealing too much (they will reveal too much)).

Writing the banter between Chloé and Kagami is fun. I want to write more of it. I can definitely see someone taking that concept and turning it into, for lack of a better word, "normal long fic"; you know, thirty chapters, misunderstanding, they take a trip for a few chapters and return, so on and so forth. I'm not doing that, I don't have the work ethic and it's not actually my favourite genre of fanfic anyway. But what else could this story be? Figuring that out is an interesting challenge.

Aerodynamics! Learning to land! How do you learn to fly in a Wings AU? What does "rich kids aren't allowed to fly" mean for the world building? I don't have a story here at all but I do like the setting.

Plagg and Alya scheming together should be gold. Plagg trying to barter with a Marinette who can't reveal she's the Guardian has also a lot of comedic potential. Plagg trying to teach both of them how much Adrien needs them could be very emotional. Just Plagg.

Also, do you have any title ideas for any of these? I think Operation Multifail is good, the rest are just literally the file names I chose when I started with these projects.

What made you ship it?

I've always thought they were really cute together, but what really got to me with them was the concept of Mitsuri inspiring Shinobu to live again. I do adore Shinobu's canon character arc, I think it's my favorite in the whole series, but I do also find a lot of comfort in AUs where Shinobu comes to realize she has things to live for. I love when Mitsuri is what begins to inspire those feelings in her again, and I love fics and AUs where Mitsuri catches onto Shinobu's plan of poisoning herself and decides to do something about it to stop it. I think it's also fun from the angle of Mitsuri joining the Corps because she wanted to find love, I like turning her desires on their heel and she being the one who needs to save someone, becomes the "knight in shining armor" if you will. GAH there's just a lot I like about their dynamic, but this is really what made me think "oh yeah, I dig this" when it came to shipping them in a lot more genuine sense beyond "haha yay lesbians"

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I mean, it ties in a lot with my answer above, but it's really just their dynamic and the intermingling of their individual arcs and making them develop each other in ways they never got to in canon because they... you know... died lmao. (Again don't get me wrong I love their canon character arcs and honestly wouldn't really change them, just in fanworks, I do like getting to see them grow and move on in ways they weren't allowed to). Shinobu and Mitsuri really are just such complex characters, and letting them interact beyond the "haha cutesy lesbian wlw cheek kisses" fanart is just so fascinating and there's a lot to explore with them

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I mean, I don't think this is unpopular among people who actually ship them, but more the kny fandom as a whole. The ppl who claim it's boring or have no substance make me roll my fucking eyes and yeah I def think its fandom's misogyny and lesbophobia thing at work cuz if they were guys and nothing else changed I know you ppl would be going feral over them. Like I said above, they have so much depth and such an interesting dynamic to explore! Ppl just don't actually think about them and shove them into "cute hand holding sapphics" at best because they don't... think about the female characters lmao. But me and the kny fandom at large have got mad beef over how they treat the female characters and sapphic ships

literati fics: a frazzled curated list

So there’s been a lot of talk on my feed about “fandom coming back” (it left?) and needing to create user-curated lists of fanfic instead of relying on authors to plug their fics.

Well, this is cheating, because I’m going to plug my own fics, too, but I’ve mostly been reading literati fics for the past few years. I don’t see a lot of Luke/Lorelai fics even being written anymore (also, while I enjoy the fics, my opinions on those two are out of line with a lot of other fans) and I got really into reading lit fics about two years ago, kind of fell out of it, and fell back into in over the past few weeks. So with that behind us, this is what I have enjoyed.

Appreciation by ksfd89 : This is a post revival fic about Rory reconciling with Jess and going through the pregnancy and birth. It’s long, but it’s complete, and I have a soft spot for it as it was the first fic in this fandom that I really latched onto. I don’t think it’s on AO3 but I may be wrong.

the weight we carry by @scoopsgf: This is basically a novel of Jess’s life story, from right before he shows up on the show to a few years past the revival. I love, love, love it and am rereading it right now. It does a great job of writing in canon and also filling in the gaps when Jess was offscreen.

wrapped up in books by @scoopsgf: This starts as a season 6 fix it where Rory reconcile with Jess after the meeting at Truncheon but then (spoiler alert) Rory winds up pregnant with twins right as she graduates from Yale. I got to the end of the first part and I was like wutttttttt but the concept actually works?!? So it’s basically Rory and Jess being adorable hipster parents in NYC.

A Society Affair by Ultra: Rory has been raised in her grandparents world when she hooks up with Jess, who is Hep Alien’s band manager. I don’t see this author talked about much here, but they’re responsible for a gazillion Lit fics. Anyway, this is very cute and features a lot of the Chilton/Yale crew as supporting characters without villainizing them.

Met You At The Right Time by @windowsandfeelings: So I really hadn’t read fic for over a year until I came across this one a little over a month ago and got super hyperfixated on this ship as a result of it. Rory becomes unstuck in time the day after her mother’s wedding and starts revisiting points in her past. Makes excellent (and I do mean excellent) use of the lack of info given to us about that eight year gap between the OS and AYITL.

Harvest Moon by @mrsmess: I had heard about this fic for years but never checked it out because well, I guess I’m a moron. Rory and Jess reunite at Luke’s cabin after her grandfather dies. I don’t know why I avoided it so long because I’m a hick and have spent half my weekends at a lakeside cabin since I was a teenager so you would think this would be right what I want in a fic and yeah, it absolutely is. So again, I’m a moron for not reading this sooner. The sequels are great, too.

Starstuck by @mrsmess: Rory and Jess get stuck in a Groundhogs Day time loop the day of the firelight festival in season 4 and have to get themselves out. I loved, loved, loved this concept and devoured the story in an hour or so.

The Long and Winding Road by @stellaluna33: Rory comes to some realizations about Jess as she becomes a mom. WIP, but I’ve very much enjoyed it so far.

If you didn’t see your fic on here, well, I probably didn’t read it yet. But these are my current favorites.

Onto my fics for this ship:

The Morning After: Jess and Rory hook up in Stars Hollow in the summer of 2012, and everyone finds out about it and talks the subject to death. I’m not sure if this qualifies as a Literati fic, honestly: I was less interested when I wrote it in the actual sex itself than the blended family dynamics and filling in some of the plot holes and unexplained stray comments from AYITL (and there were a lot of them). My thinking was that it would be interesting if Jess’s complaint that Luke didn’t give him the wifi password for six months “and I lived here!” was not a reference to the distant past, but an indication that his business failed and he had to come back to Stars Hollow for a while and hooked up with Rory when she was newly freelancing and starting to unravel. I was going to write a sequel where Jess wrote a mosaic novel in part based on Luke and Lorelai’s relationship and got his shit together professionally as a result, but I never did (oops).  Anyway, this exists, it’s complete, but it’s a got an unsatisfactory ending as it is canon compliant. Also, there are a lot of banjo jokes.

A Simple Twist of Fate:  Jess and Rory are reeling from recent breakups of long-term relationships when they reconcile on Emily Gilmore’s living room floor (niiiiice). How will their new relationship handle the pregnancy that ensues? I’ve gone round and round on this on this blog because I didn’t realize until I wrote it what an outlier it was to have Jess deeply involved with someone else (and oh, yeah, it’s written in Rory’s first person POV. Was I high when I decided to do that? Anyway). It’s twenty six chapters of angst and ponderous conversations about miscarriage, guilt, and depression, with some fluff mixed in. Currently unfinished.

Home: It’s a fast forward of A Simple Twist of Fate. Drabbles about Rory and Jess raising their daughter in Philadelphia. I’m currently working on a chapter about the I-95 bridge collapse (what a cheery subject!) 

Blueberry Pancakes: Okay, so a long time ago I started a story called Full Circle (it’s in my fic list, but I’m not linking it here because the Literati part so far is basically nonexistent). The idea was that Rory would have lots of romantic misadventures while on the campaign trail while Luke and Lorelai would go to therapy and get married and have babies and do all the conventional stuff. Rory would settle down with Jess and at some point Lorelai and Rory would be pregnant at the same time. This drabble takes place in the world of that story, which is why I’m including it here. The drabble French Fries also takes place in that universe, but Rory and Jess don’t actually appear (although their daughter does).

(Fair warning: the previous two drabbles are in a drabble list where I wrote stories about multiple ships, including Rory and Logan. So yeah, if you read the whole thing through you may get it from the other side. I’ve also re-ordered my canon compliant fics so they appear in a series, and there’s some Rory/Logan stuff in there as well, including the last fic I wrote. They are not endgame, but I haven’t written the stories where Jess wins the ship war. So it is what it is).

I'm writing something of a case fic in which Matt defends an Enhanced client in a post 'Civil War' world. I need to do some studying up on US, NY State, and international law, particularly laws and regs pertaining to human rights, defamation/slander, privacy, malpractice, medical ethics, labor laws, and protected classes. I also want to study up on the concept of precedent: how and when it applies, how it can/can't affect future cases, etc. Are there any resources you'd recommend, or ones I should avoid? (I'm very much a layman and really only need enough for verisimilitude over technical accuracy - I know my lane 😅).

Hi I am absolutely mortified at how long this has been sitting in my inbox. Um.

I will take every opportunity recommend the "in a nutshell" books, so here, for example, is one on international law (also covering human rights, treaties, etc.). Here's another "nutshell" book for labor law and the "nutshell" book on constitutional law also talks about protected classes.

These books are dense little guys that will give you more than you need, but I'm a nerd and I adore them.

Findlaw.com is also one of my favorite websites. Here, for example, is their breakdown on defamation/slander.

You can also never go wrong with Cornell's Legal Information Institute, although be warned: it's technical. But here's their explanation of precedent. (In general, though, precedent just means that cases from certain courts are "binding" on other courts. So like, any case from the U.S. Supreme Court is binding on literally every other case. But a case from New York is not going to be binding on, like, a case from Texas, and vice versa.)

Hyde's Long Way Home by @those70scomics

This is probably the one I reread the most, tied with the same creator's One Difference: Jackie and Hyde Don't Kiss (During the Summer), primarily because I just absolutely adore their writing and the way they so effortlessly write Jackie and Hyde, both as individuals and as a couple. It definitely helps that the story is set right at the start of the Chicago debacle, meaning there's canon divergence, and thank god for that; I'm a staunch season-eight denier. I'm also a sucker for a good groundhog day situation, and this work scratches that itch and then some. This one's definitely a lot heavier than some other fics I love—hence the mature rating—but it's oh-so worth it.

The Queen Of All My Dreams by @springsteenicious

Fantasy isn't normally a genre I consider when looking at Jackie/Hyde fanfiction, but this fic is wholly worth diving into a different genre, especially since it does the genre justice. The story begins a few days after Chicago and features a whole lot of magic and adventure, giving it a Lord of the Rings feel, minus the stuffiness of typical fantasy stories. The gang still very much feels like the gang, and everyone's character progression feels natural and not at all outlandish or forced, which many fix-it stories (can this be considered a fix-it? Maybe for season 7?) tend to struggle with.

Miracle by B_August (I don't know if they're on tumblr, but if they are, PLEASE send me their blog so I can follow it!)

Good lord, where to begin with this one? As you've probably guessed if you've read any of the stuff I've put out, I've got a soft spot for strong!Jackie, and an even softer spot for Jackie with powers. Miracle has absolutely all of that. It also features an incredibly sweet Steven Hyde, a surprisingly attentive Jack Burkhart, and my absolute favorite, the effervescent Buddy Morgan. It is a little out of character at times, sure, but the characterization makes sense for the point of the story in which things start changing, as well as the changed circumstances around the lives of the gang. There's also the added bonus of many, many DC references (a welcome side-effect of being a Superman story of sorts). I highly, HIGHLY recommend it!! Of All Things Creepy & Unnatural by CaedenceLaura

This one's over on fanfiction.net! It explores how the Jackie/Hyde dynamic might have evolved differently had the rest of the gang not learned of their relationship sooner. Personally, I really enjoyed the secret relationship aspect of this fic, and though they do get found out eventually, it's nice to see how having that extra time to themselves might've strengthened their bond. This fic isn't complete, but still worth a read!

Steven Who? by kezztip

This is another one that I reread quite frequently. There are few fics on this list that genuinely make me laugh out loud several times per read-through, but this one never fails to get me chuckling. The premise is just... I almost don't even want to say anything, just so you can read it for yourself. Going in blind might be the way with this one.

Heart Like Yours by @jacquelineshyde

Something in me is really drawn to the concept of Hyde realizing just how much he cares for Jackie a little too late. In most fics, the "little too late" aspect of that typically means that Jackie's moved on to some other guy or something like that; that's still relevant in this one, but she's also straight up in a coma, and to me that makes the despair of the situation all that tastier. Add to that some good ol' out-of-body action, and, well, you've got yourself a fun little If I Stay spin on our T7S universe.
