2. do you still buy cds (or other physical media)?
i do still have cds! i don't often buy them because honestly i often don't have the funds to, but when i can i do! my car still has a cd player thankfully & i have an external drive for my laptop :] the last cd i bought was rachmaninov: piano concertos nos. 1 & 4
3. do you listen to more oldies or more current stuff?

Since neither god nor anime can let me sleep, I’m gonna ramble. Specifically about Kim Petras and her album Turn off the light.
Okay... Okay. I am so unwell over this album. But of course I am?! It’s scary and creepy and edgy in all the best ways. Songs written by the gays usually slap. But you add a scary vibe in there? I’m in! Now, I could go on about how the gays love horror. The drama. The camp. Etc. I know a drag queen has made a quote about it before, but I can’t remember who or what words she said, but it’s correct. That’s why the community is so big in dbd. I do sometimes wonder if there’s a little of that troupe we connect to now where censorship made gay representation have to be ‘evil’. Like Ursula based off a drag queen. Lots of villains being a little gay coded. Etc etc. but that’s not what I’m talking about I gotta stay on track.
Anyway! Kim’s album is just so good. I had previously known her from Unholy with Sam Smith, but I didn’t really look more into her stuff. Then we went to fnaf at Fred’s and the trailer for Lisa Frankenstein played and I’m so hopeful for that movie. Zelda Williams?! Robin William’s daughter is working on it. I have hope. But Kim’s song, In the next life, is in it and since I’m drawing a thing (I hope to eventually post) I wanted to listen to that song… But drawing takes a while and I don’t want to listen to one song TOO much, so I found the whole album and just. Wow. I love it.
They all have spooky sad or spooky dance vibes to them. So I’m jamming out. No thought. Until I have a bit of the weed and I’m like Jimmy Neutron’d into it. And I might have been too high, but it’s so fucking GAY! I mean, one song is TRANSylvania, so duh. But it’s more. It’s all about the gay experience. Like ‘wrong turn’ has a couple horror movie refs and stuff, I mean there is a pretty graphic movie called wrong turn, but it’s also like honestly a gay worry. But she also twists it in a ‘no you should worry’ way? I think? Idk I can’t re-listen (not a word, can’t think word) right now.
‘Everybody dies’?! Shit. This one is very be yourself. ‘Not everybody lives, but everybody dies’. All the people that don’t live as their genuine self because of homophobia. -shakes you the reader who for some reason is still going and you’re probs Caz- This song breathed so much relief in me. I’m living my genuine self. She’s reassuring us of this.
Then of course there are other songs in there. Ones that are people demonizing and dehumanizing the lgbtqia+ and some songs are like: yeah I’m leaning into it. If you’re gonna keep that shit up, I’m gonna fucking terrify you. I know there’s so much more I could say about this album, but I’ve only known her for a few days.
Tumblr media
And honestly idk if I’m making sense or if I processed the songs I’ve listened to so far. But I just love the album. I do hope Caz reads this, listens to some songs, and adds them to a car playlist. 🤲

Note
kanmom there's been so much homophobia in the fandom in the last 24h. between JK replying to that girl's instagram (she's a minor y'all back off, he's just being friendly even if he were straight, i 100% agree with your post) to the instant backlash to the even tenuous possibility that he could maybe like a genderqueer playlist (my man listens to kim petras! this isnt outside possibility! even if it did turn out to be fake!) i don't know i guess i thought this fandom would be better, it definitely talks about itself like it's better. today has been hard, as a nonbinary person. thanks for having an awesome blog, i appreciate you.
Ask 2:
That Nain girl is UNDERAGE in Korea, she's a high schooler for fucks sake. It's so weird and disturbing that his own fans think of him like that, especially when the message he sent her was incredibly innocent. I really hate this fandom sometimes, I really do.
Ask 3:
The depths that antis are willing to go to try to prove to themselves that JK is straight is messed up. This girl is 18 (19 in international age). She’s a literally a minor! They’re implying that JK is a predator at this point just to suit their narrative. Wtf.
Ask 4:
nain is a also minor that's a teenage girl anon anon is out here insinuating he's a creepy pedo because they are that desperate to cling to a false assumption of heterosexuality and link him to any woman that exist in the same sphere as him
It has not been a good day for this fandom.
I used to have higher expectations of the fandom, but then I did come to a realisation:
The fandom is not BTS. Many are fans not because of BTS, the members, who they are, what they stand for. Many are here not for the message in the music or the members personalities. They are here because they kind of like the music but even more so really really like the way the members look, and as such these young men have become part of these fans escape and fantasies. They feel ownership over them and if and when they don't play by those fans rules, all hell breaks out. We see that almost on a daily basis with everything Minkook and we see it every single time a member, especially one from the Maknae line, even dares to breath in the direction of a female.
I guess that by now you've seen my response to that Nain anon ask. There is no common sense, or what we like to refer to as critical thinking with these people. No limits, no boundaries either, no matter who gets hurt on the way.
But then again, I remember that this fandom is ginormous, and there are plenty good people within it, I mean look at y'all here with me.
So anons, chins up, because we are here. And as hard as these days seem we are here to support whichever member is under fire as well as each other.

Analyzing the purpose of the songs in 01’s playlist
I got bored while packing
Here is the playlist for reference :-)
Handlebars - Flobots
I can do anything with no permission, I have it all under my command
Handlebars starts the playlist because it best represents 01’s past in the Human-Radiant war. In the same way that Handlebars gets more intense as the song goes on, 01 slowly falls into acceptance and usage of the power she’s been handed. All the people in her life praise her for her brains, her fighting, and her leadership, her head is up in the clouds and she’s fed by social power.
All For Us - Labrinth, Zendaya
I hope one of you come back to remind me of who I was
01 is a relentless worker, she is constantly striving for herself and others. At the same time, she struggles with her identity as she tries to grow out of her past (or future) self and become more trusting of other people. She’s trying to be less controlling.
I am not a woman, I’m a god - Halsey
Maybe I could be a different human in a new place
01 was raised as the best of forty candidates, she can be a bit full of herself. Perhaps taking the title of the song a little literally. This part of her is perhaps a bit more dangerous as her self confidence can lead to a lack of reliance on others.
Genghis Khan - Miike Snow
And the scene slips away, to the evenness I fake
Possessiveness is certainly not something 01 shows outwardly often, but it is certainly there. Between items and even some individuals, she can get prickly when someone tries to claim what she thinks is hers. 01 tries to keep a collected exterior as often as possible, but sometimes little things slip through the cracks.
Take A Slice - Glass Animals
Got a shotgun in my pocket
01 will stop at nothing to get what she wants or achieve a win or goal. Everything in her life centers on success, she has been raised in it, told that it’s what she must reach for at all times. Tied to success so closely means doing anything and everything to get it, even if it’s something she wouldn’t normally do.
Dear Life - Beck
Dear life, please lower the bar, lower than the stars
Once again with success, 01 struggles with allowing herself to fail. Though the protocol is still important and stakes are still high, they are not enforced as harshly on her as they might’ve been for her previous line of work. It’s a big jump and a gap she’s trying to bridge.
Villain - K/DA, Madison Beer, Kim Petras, League of Legends
In control, that’s how I like it, and I’m never letting go
Once again more like 01’s life in the Human-Radiant war, she was consistently pretty self serving and ruthless. Of corse, there were those on her soft side, but the power dynamic between her and those under her was a giant ego feed.
Charger (feat. Grace Jones) - Gorillaz
Well in that case, how do you know it’s your own?
A general song relating to 01’s advanced technology. The technology used to make her body is far above anything anyone in the protocol has ever seen, she’s sleek, fast, advanced, a charger in a world of mini vans.
Young And Menace - Fall Out Boy
I’m just here to become the best yet
01 is pretty spunky, though success is a burden for her occasionally, it’s still what keeps her going, and she can still find a lot of joy in being the best version of herself and continuing to win and win and win. Young And Menace represents the part of her that has fun with the success instead of the part of her that gets crushed under it.
Leave Me Alone - I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME
And when the sun comes up, you’ll find a brand new god
Too many people can be overwhelming to 01, to take the song literally. To take it a bit more figuratively, 01 during the Human-Radiant war certainly comes across people that she feels she’s better than, and feels as if they’re a waste of her time.
New Person, Same Old Mistakes - Tame Impala
Two sides of me can’t agree, will I be in too deep?
Also a bit on the nose, 01 is trying hard to reinvent herself as she reflects on how she was in her timeline and sees how she became something she didn’t want to be. However, she also values certain parts of her, like her assertiveness and drive. She’s caught in a tug of war of trying to balance the old her while trying to reinvent herself and become a kinder, more approachable person.
Champions Of Red Wine - The New Pornographers
I think we could save lives, if we don’t spend them
A short and sweet ode to 01’s changes as a person, working on herself has lead her to mellow out and be somewhat more open about herself.
Run - Joji
And I traveled the country, just to get to you
Obligatory 2.0 song. 01 struggles to open up about herself, but also doesn’t fully understand most of her feelings or what to do about them or how to approach them. Part of her wants to figure it out, part of her wants to hide from it- and she’s desperate to pick one side or another.
Breezeblocks - alt-J
Please don’t go, I’ll eat you whole
01’s relationship with herself is a complicated one. She scares herself sometimes, but it’s a battle of convincing herself that she’s not as bad as she thinks she is, and actually not being that bad. She tries hard to participate in self love.
Wires - The Neighborhood
And I just started seeing, light at the beginning of the tunnel
At the end of the day, 01’s purpose at the protocol is to stop the Human-Radiant war before it starts. She feels extremely often like the solution is just at their finger tips, but it keeps it’s distance. Aside from that, she also worries about what will become of her when the Human-Radiant war is stopped. Will she stay? Or will she attempt to return to the future?
Daydream In Blue - I Monster
I fell asleep amid the flowers
Again, the tug of calm and mellow and harsh commander is extremely there. 01 tends to change based on her surroundings, though she really does try and keep things smooth most of the time.
Sad Machine - Porter Robinson
A hundred leaders, would be borne of you
A solid overview of 01. Her trip to the past is a spark of change, just as she was always meant to be. Her spot as the first of forty, her role as commander, and now the role she’s taken in the protocol, 01 is a spark for change in a rocky world. The difference comes as she begins to learn to rely on others and share the burden and journey with others who are also sparks for change.

I always compile the songs I was obsessed with each month of the year, and after collecting over a hundred this year, I’m ready to write up the top 10 (with matching playlist!) Honorable mentions, just like my book post. Ordered by month, with projects (linked!) I thought of while listening to them.
1) 再演 (ENCORE) by RINGO (MARETU ver.) ft スズFIRE, tuned by akem [January]
君を殺した / あなたを愛した・I killed you / Darling, I loved you
Quite a title. I found this looking through akem’s videos (more to be mentioned shortly) and was absolutely shocked at the intensity of Suzu’s vocals. This is everything I want from a POWER voicebank, and I don’t even use UTAU! For those who don’t understand any of that, it’s a good song and I like it.
2) Mozaik Role by DECO*27 ft Kohaku Merry and Mawarine Shuu [January]
君が嫌うあたしなんて・If what you really hate is me
DECO*27 has quite the presence on this list, because he’s fantastic and every song he makes is good. Mozaik Role makes me think about possession, love, hate, and endings. I like having absolutely no idea what it means. This one is tuned by akem, noted above! I desperately want a remastered version of the original...
3) Checkmate by YuchaP (GIGA ver) ft Len [January, February, December] [KAY]
いたいほどわかってる・I understand so much it hurts
I worked myself into a stupor listening to this. I would go through every line in my head matching it up to the project, restarting constantly to make sure I’d gotten every line. And then I’d get carried away thinking about it, and I’d have to restart again. I still haven’t found a human cover that fully satisfies me.
4) Love Me by Felix Cartal and LIGHTS [March-December] [KAY]
Why can’t I make you love me? (Why can’t I make you love me?!)
This is just... a good song. It’s just a good song. I started my journey with it complaining about the drop, but you know what? It’s perfect. It gets me all sorts of emotional. The music videos you could make with this! The acoustic is great, too.
5) ANDROID GIRL by DECO*27 ft Miku [May-December] [KAY]
ずっとずっと信じてきたのにな・Always, always, I believed in you, for you
New favorite song! And, yes, of course it’s by DECO*27. Every time this man drops a track I’m glued to it for the next six years. And this one--I haven’t heard half the songs it references, but it’s still so powerful. And that music video! When it dropped I was translating everything I could alone in my room. Absolutely beautiful. As always, a song so good even rachie’s fantastic English cover can’t capture the intricate meaning.
6) Conqueror by Sendra ft IA [May, December] [Forest Castles]
I'm not guilty for it and I got nothing to lose
This shocked me. It was on some list of best VOCALOID concerts and I nearly fell out of my seat. That choreo! I think of the choreography specifically all the time. I did my best to connect this to any possible project because I love it so desperately, but the ties are thin.
7) Do Me by Kim Petras [June-December]
I love when you make me come back to back / ‘Cause you know my body nobody does it like that
She! Said! That! I love Kim Petras so much and I could not be happier to see her bragging about all the incredible sex she has. Obviously I was addicted to the entire Clarity album; this was just my favorite by far. The video, the lyrics, the tune, the final chorus...!
8) Sucker by the Jonas Brothers [September] [KAY]
And you're making the typical me break my typical rules
I heard this song on the radio and got all hyped up about the synth. My sister, bless her soul, let me listen to it as a reward for letting her play whatever it is Camila Cabello did to the country this week (sorry I just didn’t like the one with Shawn Mendes) on repeat. And then I downloaded it myself so I can listen to it whenever I want, without bothering her during fruity drink runs. Again, this would make such a good music video... so much so that I haven’t seen the original. I still don’t really know who the Jonas brothers are.
9) If I Had You by Adam Lambert [October] [KAY]
That would be the only thing I’d ever need
Is there a reason we stopped dressing this way, or singing this way, or making music videos this way? Why don’t women do this? Has it really been ten years? Anyway, I love this song and you can probably guess what I think about music videos. It makes me think of revolving hallways and banging parties, even though I listened to it on the same fifteen-minute walk every day.
10) i DO what i WANT by KIRA ft Miku [November] [Forest Castles]
Baby I am just a bad girl with an ego / Can’t help livin’ in my own world, call me evil
Can you believe that, before this, there was not a single song in which Miku introduced herself as, “Hatsune Miku, bitch!”? We needed this. I genuinely cannot wait for this to be played live; I need to see this in person. I want Miku to tell me, personally, “all that you are is a tragedy.” Every line of this is golden. I just think of Ahava because of the ‘evil little girl’ feeling.
Honorable mentions: Alice in N.Y. by Hitoshizuku x YamaP ft VOCALO10 (objectively transgender), Delusion Tax by DECO*27 ft Miku [Soraru ver] (vaguely Forest Castles), Revolution Nature: the Great King Epidemic by Suzumu ft Miku [Kazuhiko ver] (will tear your throat out with the growls.)

A Small Pride Playlist....Even Though June Is Almost Over
Older - Ben Platt
I really loved Ben’s vocals in Dear Evan Hansen, so when I heard he was going to do a solo album I was so happy, and I wasn’t let down at all when it came out. Older is one of my favorite songs from the album. I just love how it tells a little story, and Ben’s vocals are incredible on the song, during the chorus, and post-chorus he sounds really good. Verse 2 is my favorite bit, how it builds up, and his vocals at the end of the verse are beautiful.
Headcase - Kailee Morgue & Hayley Kiyoko
I’ve been meaning to listen to Kailee a lot more and actually get into her music. So I decided to do that by listening to this song first because it also has Hayley on it. And let me tell you I love Kailee’s vocals. My favorite part is the chorus, and then the next verse when Hayley comes in is so nice. Both their voices go so well together wow.
Heterosexuality Is a Construct - Onsind
Okay, so my friend sent me this song a long time ago, and I really love it. I love that it’s just voices and guitars. I also love the fact that it’s more of an alternative song. The voices and the instruments go so well together, and I absolutely love the lyrics in the song. It’s just a really cool little song to listen too.
Upper West Side - King Princess
I love the vibe of this song, it’s like if Hayley Kiyoko met The Neighbourhood, and I absolutely love the sound of it. For one the beat of the song just has a really good vibe to it and makes it easy to listen too. Then the lyrics are really nice, and the voice singing is incredible. It’s just one of the songs I’ve really been getting into lately.
I Don’t Want It At All - Kim Petras
I saw Kim when she opened for Troye at Radio City Music Hall last October, and I really loved her personality and music. So this song was my favorite when I heard it live, and I honestly still love listening to it. Yes, it brings back concert memories, but it just has a good vibe to it.
True Trans Soul Rebel - Against Me!
I love Against Me! so much. I first started to listen to them when they did their tour with Green Day, which I think was the Revolution Radio tour. But I just really love the sound of their songs, and the vibes of the album. I just think they’re a really cool band, and if you like more punk, alternative stuff, they’d be a good band to listen too.
Sleepover - Hayley Kiyoko
I really love her. Like I actually really love her. My girlfriend and I love listening to her. She just has a really nice voice to listen too, and her music is just a whole vibe in itself. It’s just pop, but nice, softer sounding, or just really upbeat.
Heaven - Troye Sivan ft. Betty Who
So I love Troye. When I was first coming out, and figuring everything out, I always listened to this song. It just has a special meaning to me. I love Troye’s voice on his first album, and this song is no exception. It’s just so nice sounding, and Betty’s vocals work well with his.

Tay’s fav new artists, songs, albums of 2019; decade favs too <3
Hello friends. I have listened to 20,000 songs this year (#brag). Some of them I have listened to more than once, and some of them are all together on one really good album I like. Here's some lists of the songs, albums, and people who make them that I liked a lot.
For your listening convenience: a Spotify playlist with the artists, songs, and albums in question. One song from each artist, one song from each album: checka me out
5 new artists from (roughly) this year (unordered)
Slayyyter
Slayyyter is the logical conclusion of the early 2000's pop wave, absolutely bubble gum but no longer pulling and punches with its sexual desire. "He wanna get in my guts" indeed.
100 Gecs
I love high energy, I love noise, and I love catchy. Synthesize major electronic musical movements of the last 10 years and then kick that in the dick and you get 100 Gecs.
Stef Chura
A consistent AF album, with great single songs and a slow procession as well, I'm very hyped for more!
Glass Beach
This band is cutting edge, they know a shitton about music, their hour long album feels like it's only 30 minutes, it teleports you away.
NilĂźfer Yanya
Clearly someone who is making music with a succinct style and aesthetic, I find it great to see a full album form around (relatively) simple concepts like an imaginary mental health spa.
10 Songs from this year (ordered)
10. "Good News (Ya-Ya Song)" by MUNA
Unexpectedly a smash hit for me, this is such a simple song but something in the melody stirs a deep and warming feeling within me.
9. "Falling Down The Stairs Of Your Smile" by The New Pornographers
New Pornographers always have great singles. Their albums never quite capture the same feeling, and it breaks my heart every time. Still love the band.
8. "Can't Believe The Way We Flow" by James Blake
A many month throwback, this song was a go-to for the whole year. Seemingly forgotten by many (surely not Dave tho), this album and song really showed additional depth for Blake in my eyes.
7. "24" by IDK
Should to DJ Big Fan. This song is fun as fuck and has so many good one-liners. "She says she not a THOT she a nymphooo"
6. "Clarity" by Kim Petras
This song is a guilty pleasure, not because I am ashamed of its content or sound, but because Kim consistently works with Dr. Luke, the fuckhead who absolutely abused Ke$ha. This song absolutely bops though. Oof.
5. "All I Do is Lie" by Stef Chura
A very small sleeper hit for me, and a big regret when I missed Stef playing nearby, but I love the winding and twisting of this song and the simple mantras bouncing back and forth between meanings.
4. "Lark" by Angel Olsen
This song encapsulates all of Angel's album. It's the lead-in to the album, and it truly matches the scope and grandeur.
3. "Stupid Horse" by 100 Gecs
A song so strong I also want to beat the shit out of a jockey. Distill 100 gecs and for me, this song is at the center. High energy, nonsense, and just total fun. I don't feel bad saying I kind of wish all music sounded like this (sometimes).
2. "Jelmore" by Bon Iver
14,115 feet above sea level, I look out to the sweeping arc of the horizon, a cloudy sky blankets the landscape I left behind. Play this song on your rental car speakers when you choose to conquer fear and ascend a towering mountain.
1. "Gretel" by (Sandy) Alex G
I adore the slow fade in, the garbled vocals, the familiar guitar. The garbled mix slowly devolves into a clear message. Alex G has said he never looks up lyrics, that there is an ambiguity to all words in songs. Is that why he sings this with such clear conviction? There's no misinterpretation here: "good people got something to lose."
20 Albums from this year (ordered)
The first ten are great, but I didn't want to blurb for them all!
20. Clarity by Kim Petras
19. MAGDALENE by FKA Twigs
18. Midnight by Stef Chura
17. Miss Universe by NilĂźfer Yanya
16. Dedicated by Carly Rae Jepsen
15. Two Hands by Big Thief
14. Assume Form by James Blake
13. basking in the glow by oso oso
12. Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared? by Deerhunter
11. Pang by Caroline Polachek
10. Animated Violence Mild by Blanck Mass
I became stuck in place while listening to Blanck Mass on a plane this summer. One of the only albums I downloaded, it was all I had at 30,000 feet, thrumming engines piercing all the other music I had handy. The cacophony only added to this album, noise layered on noise but turning into melodies and stretching into songs.
9. Father of the Bride by Vampire Weekend
I don't know a ton about jam bands, but I definitely feel it when everyone else says this album was made in hopes of becoming one. This long ass album has some great highs, some charming lows, and honestly a really good chunk of Danielle Haim. Really a soundtrack to 2019 in a lot of ways. But it's really fuckin' long.
8. IGOR by Tyler, the Creator
Tyler's career has had the craziest arc. Rapping about killing women and progressing all the way to IGOR, which, is it even a rap album? The album contains such clear direction and vision, and far less of the reckless anger that Tyler became known for. The energy and sound has been honed down to a fine point, and there's a conciseness that sticks with you for hours after listening.
7. House of Sugar by (Sandy) Alex G
Alex G has always done so much for me. Bedroom music that has transformed each time into bigger and more detailed versions of itself. House of Sugar is no exception. While maybe a little less thrilling for me than Rocket, it's another evolution of this stripped down style, still laid bare but richer all the same.
6. U.F.O.F. by Big Thief
A lot of lists are going to feature some Big Thief. Big Thief is good, their music pierces you through the flesh and hits you in the bones. It stirs the spirit of a time now lost, sidelong glances through thickets of woodsy pines, listening to a friend play a simple song on their new guitar. It's great to celebrate a band and an album that puts a lot of pretense to bed and creates a simple, pleasing experience.
5. Charli by Charli XCX
Charli delivers an album after years of PC Music collaborated mix tapes and psuedo-album releases. Charli isn't some sort of second coming, but is the pinnacle of her expertise: fantastic collaborations, cutting edge beats, and familiar tales of her love and loss.
4. All Mirrors by Angel Olsen
Angel wasn't really known for her grandeur. Her songs and albums were dynamic, sure, with strong emotions, but All Mirrors dives into the direction of a grand pool, crystal clear and vast. "Lark" is a sweeping masterpiece, while "All Mirrors" has a methodical build and release. Angel is fully putting her voice and composition to work with an album this magnificent.
3. the first glass beach album by Glass Beach
My favorite description for this band is "post-emo." Many of my compatriots are not fond of band genres in generally, but for me this really nails it. It's a combination of an emotional, DIY scene with an online mentality, which I feel is representing the pace of the world. Also the music absolutely blasts, grand and epic and quiet and pensive, meandering as it wants.
2. Ghosteen by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Until about two months ago, I wasn't even a huge Nick Cave fan. Serendipitously, I happened to look into his backlog a couple weeks before this surpirse release. I spent a small amount of time looking into his older style, but when Ghosteen popped up, it floored me. That tangible loss, the grief that winds around you and grips you from within, it's on this album in full force. It's an album I know I will listen to sparingly, but lovingly, for ages and ages.
1. 1000 Gecs by 100 Gecs
I typically do not measure these kinds of lists by the number of listens. Usually albums with emotional weight or impact are not so accessible or listenable. This album is an absolute exception, it is crystalline and pure, it is powerful and subtle, its energy infectious. For me, it's a clear message describing the future of music I love.
Honorable menties, not conclusive or ordered, from this year:
Albums:
IDK's Is He Real?
Holly Herndon's PROTO
JPEGMAFIA's All My Heroes Are Cornballs
Battles's Juice B Crypts

American Football's American Football (LP3)
DIIV's Deceiver
Anamanguchi's [USA]
Sir Babygirl's Crush on Me
Sharon Van Etten's Remind Me Tomorrow
Hemlock Ernst & Kenny Segal's Back At The House
Jay Som's Anak Ko
Florist's Emily Alone
Songs:
"Harmony Hall" by Vampire Weekend
"Superbike" by Jay Som
"Aute Cuture" by ROSALÍA
Many many others!
Roughly 10 of 2010-2019's best albums (unordered)
Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter
Encapsulate all of the indie rock I listened to and make it so dramatic it oozes lackadaisical energy.
The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do by Fiona Apple
The title is as long as the album is great. I am chomping at the bit for Fiona to follow this up with literally anything.
Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens
Many feel Sufjan could do no wrong, but it's not that he's unimpeachable, it's that he is able to shift his sound in pivotal ways at pivotal moments.
Cerulean Salt by Waxahatchee
Waxahatchee captured the post college ennui I was so suddenly thrust into, and continues to kick ass even after I got over the dread.
Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
This album kicks ass, but also I have an undying emotional connection to it since I listened to it on repeat the months after pops died! "We Drift Like Worried Fire" is entwined in my soul.
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City by Kendrick Lamar
There is a lot of great Kendrick to choose from, but the one absolutely stacked with bangers will remain my favorite (but I totally acknowledge the artistic merit and beyond of Damn. and TPAB).
The Monitor by Titus Andronicus
I only got into this album like four years after the fact, but it scratched the civil-war-concept-album-actually-about-the-Northeast I didn't know I had! Pumped it also taught me a cool Abe Lincoln speech.
E•MO•TION by Carly Rae Jepsen
This album guided me from toeing around pop music to going all in and finally have a good time in life.
Song of the summer:
"Steal My Sunshine" by Len
Remarkably, for the 20th year in a row, the song of the summer is Len's "Steal My Sunshine." What a powerhouse.

Music Monday (6-3-19)
It’s June already? Adfhasldagsaddfdsds. That means that the halfway point of 2019 is speedily approaching, but also that I’ve been making these Music Monday posts for around SIX MONTHS now. Anyhow, there’s a lot to talk about and I need to make up for last week, so without any further ado:
New Releases
gone by VÉRITÉ: VÉRITÉ continues to prove that she’s vastly underrated in the pop scene, creating hard-hitting beats that are fresh and interesting listening experiences. The crescendo on this track is great, starting with delicate vocals and growing to powerful bombast. The production on this track gets complex at times, with sparkling sound effects and thumping drums, but also knows when to pair it back. I’m hyped for this new era, and you should be too.
ISOU by SHAED: SHAED dropped two IMPECCABLE songs this week, both this and “Thunder,” but I ended up liking this one a smidgen more. It’s beat is just so bouncy and infectious and Chelsea Lee’s performance is playful and likable as always. It’s going straight to my Summer playlist.
Cheap Queen by King Princess: I... I need this album to drop... like, you don’t understand. I love the vintage-sounding vocal samples sprinkled into the intro, the chill atmosphere accentuated by the subtle flutes and warped drums, and Mikaela Straus’s laid-back vocals that contrast with the confident lyrics. Now where’s the damn album???
Aute Culture by ROSALÍA: My QUEEN!!! The horns on this track, the snaps and claps, the energy, it makes me want to bust a move on the dance floor like a bad bitch, and I'm a dumb bitch that can’t dance. This new direction for  ROSALÍA’s sound is so exciting to me, being more pop-driven while still staying true to her traditional flamenco roots. I’m I don’t know if I expected anything less than excellence, even if you don’t speak Spanish there is plenty to love from this song and from her whole discography. Also check out the music video because boy, can she slay a music video.
youtube
Do Me by Kim Petras: Kim Petras has been popping out singles at a positively dizzying rate as of lately it’s been hard to cover them all, not that I’m complaining. This song is yet another bop from her, with her signature sassy vocals and pop-drenched production. Just be aware that the lyrics are quite raunchy. I don’t know if all these single are for an album or just a collection of songs or what, but I’m here for it.
Still Dreaming by Raveena: Raveen’s debut album Lucid dropped this Friday and cleared my skin after one listen. Her music has such a soothing and sensual feel to it, it’s the musical equivalent lying in silk sheets, and I love it. This song features Raveena’s gentle whispering softly into your ear, glittering keys, and a wispy instrumental backdrop. Give the album a listen if you’re intro dreamy R&B, you won’t regret it.
Never Really Over by Katy Perry: KATY PERRY SAMPLED DAGNY??? And came out with a track that’s a lot of fun and hella summery? As someone that wasn’t the biggest fan of her Witness singles, hearing an almost synthpop-leaning sound from Katy Perry was really refreshing, and of course that “Love You Like That” sample is amazing. This song is such a grower, and it’s gotten better with every listen. Hope to hear more like this from her in the future.

Are you a pretty girl? Are you angry...or maybe just a little bored? Do you like to play with your food? This playlist is for you.
For Ashleigh’s Wampus playlist, I decided to choose songs themed around the competition itself, and inspired by BLACKPINK-- so the first half of it is the “pink” sound and the second half is the “black” sound. ;) For the full experience, I’ve linked the KPOP music videos because, well, they’re the best, they’re the mood. Enjoy!
Ddu-ddu-ddu - BLACKPINK
When we want, we’ll steal outright Whatever you do, it’s like cutting water with a knife Our hands are full of a fat check If you’re curious, fact check My expectations are higher It’s like fish in water I’m a little Toxic You’ve fallen for me, I`m Foxy
Oh wait til’ I do what I do Hit you with that ddu-du ddu-du du
Let’s start our Melee with this powerful declaration of war from BLACKPINK, America’s #fave girl-crush kpop group. This entire song is all about that girl-power, which introduces the theme of Ashleigh’s playlist. I also like that it flows very smoothly between hard-hitting rapping and some melodic pre-chorus sections, two whiplash moods that will be reflected here in this playlist. One of my favorite lines comes in the pre-chorus: “I only smile for myself.” In the end, even if she and Corny do win, she’ll be doing it one hundred percent for Ashleigh and Ashleigh only.
Cannibal - Kesha
I eat boys up, breakfast and lunch Then when I'm thirsty, I drink their blood Carnivore, animal, I am a Cannibal I eat boys up, you better run
Keeping the beat pumping, this song speaks to the raw animalistic power of the Wampus in a pretty literal fashion. I don’t really know what else to say because I feel like Kesha’s really got it covered, in her embrace of her physical and sexual appetite. For Ashleigh, this appetite translates to the thirst for battle and her hunger for victory. So watch out other champions-- she’ll attacc and turn u into snacc
Icy - ITZY
What can I do though I seem cold? I don't care what you think because I'm cool oh, oh, oh Come on With confidence let it go (Here we go) Marching on the streets (On a roll) Background music where I be Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb
Icy but I'm on fire A dream inside me, I'm confident Look at me, I'm not a liar I don't want to be put in your box (Dance)
I picked this song because its fun, erratic, percussive-- basically one big wink emoji to me, which you hear in every interesting sound in this song (you have like, three different types of drums, a cash register sound, the sound of glass breaking??, some cellphone noises??). The attitude of this song tells you that Ashleigh does not give a single fuck, and the lyrics reflect that: “They keep talking/I keep walking.” It’s also about embracing a flaw and turning it into a strength-- some people call her ‘icy’ but she says that makes her ‘cool.’  I also love the fun drum break-down in the middle of the song right before the bridge, which feels like Ashleigh flaunting everything that she’s got.
Birthday- SOMI
Oops, you're not invited Yeah, you're not invited Oops, you're not invited I'm gonna do what I want today Everyday is my birthday
Honestly, half of the reason I included this is because the lead in from ICY to Birthday is so smooth and fun.
But yeah! Another song about celebrating yourself, literally. It feels appropriate for a playlist themed around the melee for there to be a song announcing that its Ashleigh’s birthday. In my opinion, that’s basically her way of saying that this championship is really just about her and the rest of y’all are just bystanders, thank you.
also the brass at the end omfsalkgjadf
When I Rule the World - Liz
When I rule the world, then I'm gonna make you sweat Dog collar 'round your neck, on your knees and scrub the deck Oh there's a spot over there so I'll drag you by the hair So scrub it, rub it, whip it, dry it, 'til I tell you to stop When I'm on the throne, it's a total freak zone You can call me mommy and I'll throw a dog a bone Better bite on that bone, or you're never going home So bite it, break it, hit it, lick it, 'til I tell you to stop
Obviously, this is Ashleigh already basking in her inevitable victory. I like that the lyrics infantilize her audience while also leaning into that infantilization-- the high feminine “baby” voice, for example. The instrumental reflects that with its bright, bubbly songs, though there’s a dark undercurrent that draws from dubstep.
Also, shoutout to this line-- “I can be your daddy and you're gonna make me proud.” Please someone call Ashleigh Daddy.
Boo! Bitch - Kim Petras
No lyrics for this one, but we’re continuing our EDM thread here. I love all the dark beats and samples in this mini little dance-break as we move into the second half of our playlist. While the first half is more playful-- speaking to Ashleigh’s performance of the rich, mean girl-- I like to think the second half takes the competition more seriously. She’s not just pretty, she’s deadly.
disco tits - tove lo
I'm sweatin' from head to toe I'm wet through all my clothes I'm fully charged, nipples are hard Ready to go (oh, oh) I'm sweatin' from head to toe I'm wet through all my clothes (yeah) I'm fully charged, nipples are hard Ready to go
This could technically be interpreted as a pretty straightforward song about sex, but for Ashleigh competition is sex. Winning is better than any orgasm. The entire song has lots of gritty dark synths too and that’s the vibe we’re going for people.
Bad guy - billie eilish
So you're a tough guy Like it really rough guy Just can't get enough guy Chest always so puffed guy I'm that bad type Make your mama sad type Make your girlfriend mad tight Might seduce your dad type I'm the bad guy, duh
I would include this classic billie eilish song for the “duh” alone. Billie Eilish is THE Ashleigh musician who is surprised, no one. Anyway, this whole song is the exact mood I’m going for here. I love Billie’s seductive whisper, the distortion on her confessed “I’m the bad guy” as though the demon is about to rip through. The ending also reminds me of those scenes in horror movies where the possessed person’s limbs start to distort and go every which way.
Mother’s Daughter - Miley Cyrus
Hallelujah, I'm a freak I'm a freak, hallelujah Every day of the week I'ma do ya Like I want to I'm a Nile Crocodile, a Piranha Oh my God, she got the power Oh, look at her, she got the power So-so, so don't fuck with my freedom I came back to get me some I'm nasty, I'm evil Must be something in the water or that I'm my mother's daughter
I love how this song also starts off gritty, like metal scraping against metal. I’m also big on the animal themes as I’m sure people have noticed, but I think that plays into that #wampus beast energy. Finally, this song is a really nice allusion to Wampus Ashleigh’s veela heritage on the downlow. Though she’d never be open about it, veelas are female, and so her true mother would inevitably be a full veela, as fierce and dangerous as the myths suggest. So this song is a cool nod to that and Ashleigh’s inhuman side.
Play destroy - Poppy
Poppy, I'm dying It's a Hollywood moment Destroy, destroy, destroy Destroy, destroy, destroy It's time to die Uh! This is how we play destroy, destroy
Now let’s ramp it all the way up! This song is vicious and creepy, from the hard metal rock orchestration to Poppy’s soft, girly vocals. I LOVE the “It’s a Hollywood moment” lyric because it’s like something out of a horror movie when one of those creepy dolls come to life. So this song is definitely building to the climax of the competition as Ashleigh revels in the violence, the blood, the pain.
Kill this Love - BLACKPINK
Feelin' like a sinner It's so fire with him I go boo, hoo He said "you look crazy" Thank you baby I owe it all to you Got me all messed up His love is my favorite But you plus me Sadly can be dangerous
Ending off our playlist, we must, yes, literally kill this love. It’s about ending a relationship but I’m interpreting it as the murdering of all your soft emotions and your weaknesses. It’s time to get down to business and finish off this game. Plus ugh-- the sirens! The marching! The air horns! That ending goes from 50 to 25000 and that’s how any Wampus ends her victims: not with a whimper, but a bang.

10 Queer Artists You Need To Listen To In 2019
Tumblr media
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and half a century of working towards a future without discrimination. While politics, ethics, and religious beliefs all come into play (whether we like it or not) when shaping a path for the LGBTQ community, the art that is music and the musicians behind it help drive the discussion and awareness of issues and topics that need the world's attention. The more conscious effort we make as listeners to give these artists the platform for both their activism and artistry to shine, the bigger impact we help make in leading us to where we need to be as a community. So this pride month especially, take some time to give these artists a listen, not just because they are queer, but because they are making some dope music and fronting a much needed representation in the industry
Ben Platt: Most commonly known to us all as the Tony award winner for his lead role in Dear Evan Hansen, Platt has proved with his most recent debut album that theatre like vocals and confessionist lyrics can coexist in a soulful blend to tell the story of a cathartic relationship.
Carlie Hanson: Her cool-toned tunes are perfect for everything from a summer day out to a night in. Her song “Only One” has been a personal favorite for a good while now. A rise to fame as quick as hers is unheard of, she is currently traveling with Troy Sivan as an opener and her debut EP Junk has already gained some buzz with several songs being featured on the popular New Music Friday playlist over the past few weeks.
FHAT: With just the right blend of R&B, Pop and Electronic, the duo Aaron and Sedric serve the right summer feel with their 2018 singles “Pleasure” and “Onatd” and have teased 2019 to be the release of their much anticipated EP.
Hayley Kioko: Her break came in the world of children’s telly when she appeared in Lemonade Mouth and produced the absolute slap that is “Determinate” (You know every word of that fucking song, don’t lie to yourself) Most known for her collaboration with Kehlani and her song “Curious”, Kioko continues to be unapologetically outspoken about her sexuality.
Saro: His debut album, Die Alone, combines his Morrissey-esque lyricism with moody, and electronic productions. The previously described “pop noir” artist creates a well versed blend of soft vocals and wholehearted lyricism.
Rob.b: Mexican American rapper Robby Antonio Zumaya, better known as Rob.B, is carving his own path in the hip-hop scene with his take on normative hip-hop topics through a filtered queer lens.
Sophie: Sophie Xeon, known as Sophie, is a Scottish record producer, singer, songwriter, and DJ. Most commonly known for having produced Kim Petras banger “1, 2, 3 dayz up”. Sophie is becoming well known for her lurid dance pop sound and is rumored to be working with artists like Lady Gaga and Madonna.
KAYTRANADA: Louis Kevin Celestin, known as Kaytranada, is a Haitian-Canadian DJ and record producer. His 2016 album 99.9% was a huge success with its dope blend of joyful house and disco music. Taking a break from the scene to get back into it, his 2019 single “DYSFUCTIONAL” is proving to be another successful drop.
VINCINT: If you watched The Four you probably recognise him from his amazing rendition of “Creep”. Now signed to a label, VINCINT is creating an energetic blend of pop and house music with his distinctively soulful vocals.
Tash Sultana: This girls voice got me fucked up. With an amazingly raspy yet soothing sound, she makes the right connection between the 15 instruments she's learned to master and the amazing vocal control she brings to every song. She showed up to Coachella last year and is probably one of the few people I am really sad I didn’t get to see.
If it wasn’t for the LGBTQ Community we would not have the creative landscape, and sheer compassion in the music industry that we do today. There is big discrepancy in the  paths for the right to equality that everyone deserves throughout every industry, but the music industry has always been one intended to be about love, expression, and freedom. We have come a long way, but Pride is both intended to celebrate the accomplishments that have been made, and also intended to create a space of visibility for those who are helping make the right moves in the right direction. So give these artists some time and space, it means more than you think!

Pestering you with ask game questions teehee!
8 for Mata-Shali, 32 for Ahad, 22 for Remy, and maybe a 23 for Opal if we’re feeling a little silly
Thank you for the ask game questions teehee! Deepest apologies that they took so long to be answered
8. A song that fits them, and do you think they would enjoy it? [Mata-shali]
Okay so I’ll admit that not once but twice did I read this question, listen to the entirety of my Mata-shali playlist, and then get distracted and forget to actually come back and answer it. It’s hard to pick just one since her playlist is one of the longest character playlists I’ve made (lots of brainrot for this girlie), but I think two that fit her experiences the best are Dig the Crazy - Faith Marie and In The Next Life - Kim Petras. As for whether or not Mata-shali would like them… she probably wouldn’t care much either way. She tends towards either very discordant “music” or folk dance music, and I doubt she’d really pay attention to either song enough to draw any sort of connection between herself and them.
32. Pet peeves? What's the one (or more) thing(s) that someone could do to instantly piss them off? [Ahad]
The real question is what doesn’t piss off Ahad honestly. He’s the grumpiest person you’ll ever meet in your life, so just about anything will get a glare or an annoyed sigh from him, but there are definitely some things that will instantly get under his skin. Any attempt to lecture him about his drinking or cut him off for the night will instantly have him pissed at you. Alcohol is the only semi-comfort this man has left and you better pray some other god helps you if you try and take it away from him. Another huge pet peeve is just. Any sort of PDA. Maybe a bit ironic given his history as a deity of love, but in recent years he’s come to absolutely despise seeing happy couples flaunting their relationships. He is… still extremely bitter after his own failed relationship.
22. Any embarrassing tattoo/scar stories? [Remy]
Every scar story is an embarrassing scar story for Remy! Or, they would be if he ever got embarrassed about them. They’re certainly always from some stupid stunt he pulled or fight he accidentally got into, but easily his dumbest scar is his missing finger on his right hand. I mean, in fairness to him the mafia that he was a part of is known for being extremely unforgiving of mistakes. And it’s really not his fault that the caravan of goods he was supposed to help protect was outnumbered and stopped by city guards on the way to one of the mafia safehouses. And sure, maybe Remy was supposed to pretend to be the only one who knew about the drugs and take the fall for it but he forgot and instead almost ratted out the leader of the caravan, so after they finally managed to escape the guards he ended up losing a finger as punishment. But easily the worst part is that it’s only after they had chopped off his finger that he realized they were a literal mafia group and he was a part of it.
23. The story they'd only tell when drunk off their ass? [Opal]
Opal would rather pick fights than swap stories while extremely drunk, but he’s definitely got some good ones if you can get him to focus enough to tell them!
Definitely one of the sillier (and more embarrassing) ones would be the time Opal [extremely drunk at the time] got extremely jealous and challenged Ace [also extremely drunk] to a fight for Jabari’s affection. Except Ace is too drunk to get through a proper incantation to cast anything more than a cantrip and Opal doesn’t have his arcane focus on him, so the two spend several minutes unsuccessfully “fighting” (aka insulting each other and making an occasional grab) before Ace finally manages to get one of his fire-based spells off at the exact same time that Opal decides the only valid weapon nearby is a rather large bottle of alcohol. Long story short, Ace lights the bottle as it’s being thrown at them, which sprays flaming alcohol all over the place and nearly burns the entire tavern down. Jabari ends up dragging them both out after apologizing profusely to the owner for the idiocy of her two companions, both of whom have already been dating her for several months and had absolutely no need to compete in the first place.

I’ve been wanting to share this for a while now. I’ve also been wondering if anybody would care, and I’ve come to the consensus that it doesn’t really matter. I just want to share something that I’ve felt for a long time that I couldn’t share with people, my taste in music. I’m starting a tradition, sharing my top favorite songs for the year (however many there may be). Spotify shared with me my top listened songs of 2018 and I’m sharing the songs that kept giving eargasms with each listen.
#1: Little Mix & Sharaya J: Strip
An eargasm as soon as the song came on. Then the lyrics themselves just seep into my skin and just says something to me, inspires me to love me for me. (Even if the song is for women specifically, I can relate to some of the lyrics) also lets not forget about them harmonies that are just magical! Love me some little mix harmonies 😍
#2: Pretty Sister & LDN Noise: Tears
LOVE THIS SONG! The voices the beat, the rhythm! #loveofmylife The producers of this record put they foot in this one. I love EDM anway so this song was a major plus. When the song comes on it’s acapella for a minute then the beat comes in, and hypes you up. By the time the first verse comes in, they know they have you hooked so the first verse is a regular verse, then the chorus comes in and hypes you up again. This song I’ve loved since early 2017 and it was one of those songs that barely anybody knew about and I still love it and think about it to this day!
#3: LDN Noise: Finally
Another song by LDN Noise that takes the cake for me. This song came out this year however. This song is in this list because it’s so close to Their song “Tears”. In terms of sound and beat and rhythm, as well overall effect to me. This song takes on a house sound. Don’t get me wrong though the song. Is repetitive, but the breaks in between and the differentiation in beats sometimes throughout the song, is enough for me to ignore that.
#4: Little Mix: The Cure (Stripped)
Now this song is slow, as well as acapella. And as I had said before I live for Little Mixes harmonies as this song is chock full of harmonies. It’s nothing but voices. Their harmonies are heavenly, as well as their solo voices. The lyrics are the same, heavenly, relatable and real. The only bad thing about this song, is that it’s short. It’s one minute and 47 seconds.
#5: Troye Sivan: Seventeen
This masterpiece, as told by Troye Sivan himself, was remade multiple times until they got it right, and they got it right to the point. I myself relate to this song so much. The song is basically saying, a 17 year-old boy had a sexual relationship with an older man. That’s basically what this song is describing. I had a brief relationship with an older man when i was 20. He was 43 and an army veteran. I’m saying brief because it was only 10 months. This song said it all. The aura of this overall song is SO GOOD. The vocals, the music, the drums all encompasses the whole mood that this song is.
#6: Olly Murs: Take Your Love
At first listen this song can fade into the background for some people. But for me I live for songs that can use tropical house sounds, and make it their own. Olly Murs is one of those examples. The song is talking about a person that the main character is in love with. He’s looking at this persons current boyfriend, and seeing that the current boyfriend doesn’t do anything worth this persons time, he’s swooping in as the best friend “taking his love away”. I love this. It’s like the best friend of this person, is already in love with this person, so the boyfriend not being a good boyfriend is even better for the main character. I’m living for this story.
#7: Clean Bandit, Marina & Luis Fonsi: Baby
The overall feel of this song, feels SO GOOD! That chorus is heaven! Clean bandit did what? THAT. Adding Marina from Marina & The Diamonds was check #1 for a good song. Adding Luis Fonsi was check #2 for a good song and popular song because of the Hispanic representation, as well the Hispanic musical influence in the instrumentation. Living for this whole ensemble.
#8: Jade Novah: Cosmic Love
Sultry af. Effortless. Lovely. EVERYTHING. It’s a R&B masterpiece. The best R&B song I’ve heard this year, in my opinion. Also, Jade Novah herself is a goddess, and her voice is so dang soothing, I don’t want her to shut up 😍
#9: Lali & Pabllo Vittar: Caliente
YASS BOO! This is everything! EVERYTHING! A Brazilian drag queen, and a Latin pop star, IM LIVING! Where do I start on this song????!
The beat? EVERYTHING!
The vocals? LIVING
The rhythm? 😩👌🏾✨👌🏾✨👌🏾✨
I obviously don’t understand what they’re saying, other than the title of the song (Caliente - hot). That’s it, I’m living.
#10: Loud Luxury & Brando: Body
UGH. Just UGH. This is Loud Luxury’s first single that is not a remix they did. And they did it effortlessly. It’s like when the song is playing I don’t want it to stop. I do want to say this though, it’s another tropical house/ dance-pop song. But I love it, I’m living for it. It’s everything in my opinion.
#11: Sabrina Carpenter: Sue Me
SPEAK TO ME SABRINA. Sue me for looking so cute today, sue me for looking so gorgeous today! Songs either get me by lyrics, one of a kind vocals, or the beat. This one was lyrics. Sis gave me those lyrics! Also that R&B Influence she threw in there, icing on the cake. Amazing.
#12: Alessia Cara: All We Know
You have no idea how bad I wanted to hear new music from Ms. Alessia. I loved her first album and her second album is no different. Also plus, her second album came 4 days after my birthday (November 26) so that’s awesome☺️👌🏾 Now this song is one of those stand out songs, other than the singles obviously. The groove is so smooth. The transition between the hook and the chorus is perfection! The vocals are amazing as always! Also I love that she cusses now 😅. The downside is that I can’t play some her songs around kids because of the cussing but, the songs are still good.
#13: PRETTYMUCH: Jello
There’s In Real Life, Why Don’t We, Next Town Down, and PRETTYMUCH. The boy bands are back after a brief silence from One Direction. PRETTYMUCH is one of those good boy bands that are coming back (I’m not saying the-not-so-good ones). And this song is evidence of it. It’s a perfect mix of 90s Hip-hip and today’s pop. The vocals maybe auto tune but, the sound is there and for me that’s enough to grab me ☺️
#14: ZAYN & Nicki Minaj: No Candle No Light
This song caught me off guard in a good way. I was listening to ZAYN’s new album “Icarus Falls”, and near the end I was expecting more shower songs more emotional songs, and then this song comes on like a lightbulb. The beginning didn’t entice me, the beat drop did. That Caribbean/ tropical house sound he included in this song, was different to me and I like I said before, I love different ways people use tropical house. This way was complex, and everything! It was clubby, it was true to its Caribbean roots, and the fact that he added nicki onto this track is extra points. I don’t know why this song doesn’t the recognition that it needs????
#15: Kim Petras: Can’t Do Better (Justin Caruso Remix)
There’s certain remixes of songs that makes my ear have a eargasm and this one is one of many. This house club mix of Kim Petras’s song is amazing. It creates a whole different feel to the song. It’s an addictive remix.
#16: Hailee Steinfeld & Aris Archontis: Back To Life (80s Remix)
This is perfect 80s nostalgia! That’s it! It’s perfect 80s nostalgia! Then adding Hailee’s vocals! YASS
#17: David Guetta, Bebe Rexha & J Balvin: Say My Name (Corey James Remix)
That bass has me shook forever. I will say this though, Bebe Rexha has some good songs, but ever since she died her hair blonde, I feel like I’ll never get the Bebe Rexha sound I fell in love with at the beginning of her career with her black hair. Now, like I said she has some good songs that I’ll listen to, but other than that? No. But this one, (even though it’s a remix) I fell deeply in love with this. The heavy bass added on with the Latin beat and then Spanish language added into the lyrics, EPIC! I honestly will never get over that’s bass though, it’s everything 😍✨
#18: Mind Bath, Ouri & Forever: Flower Tattoo (Ouri Rework)
Eclectic. Is what comes to mind with this song. The bare bones of it all. The bass, the drums, the vocal effects. It’s so little, but so right!
#19: Dua Lipa: Bad Together
This is a song that stands alone in this list, in my opinion, and that’s what makes it apart of this list. It’s dark sound, heavy vocals, and naughty lyrics, makes it a song that I can listen to over and over again. This song talks about a pair of people that’s so right together, but they’ve both done bad things. It’s lyrically perfect, sonically soothing and smooth. I’ll never get over this song.
#20: Miguel: Vote
This song snuck up on me. I was watching the movie, Crazy Rich Asians. And I love watching the credits because the credits always have a song that they didn’t play during the movie, and in my opinion the song is always underrated. This is one of those songs. The funk of this song makes you want to dance, and then add Miguel’s timeless voice that’s just the icing on the cake. It’s so refreshing to hear this sound again.
#21: Netta: Toy
This song caught me way off guard. This song won the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Netta Barzilai is Israeli and she won with this song. I was expecting a slow ballad or empowering song. I got empowering definitely, but slow? But, not by any means. This song is an enigma in itself. Ms. Barzilai uses chicken sounds (that she makes herself) in the song, but the overall empowering message of, “I’m not your toy, you stupid boy” is EVERYTHING. I’m living for her and I might have to catch up on my Eurovision knowledge because Ms. Barzilai definitely sparked some interest in me for next years contest 👌🏾
#22: Netta: Toy (Sagi Kariv Remix)
Now, this was my first listen into “Toy” itself I listened to the original after I listened to this. Obviously I fell in love with this. It’s so house, club, gay club music. I could vogue the house down to this remix. It compliments the song so well, as well as her voice too. Everywhere is my runway with this song. 🙌🏾
