Spent an hour and a half making horseradish sauce. I had to grate it for an hour and it stung so bad I was in tears the entire time, but my sinuses are now very clear.

Now that I'm done and have my sauce, I cannot for the love of heaven remember in what way I consume it. Do I make bread and eat it with bread? Do I make tortillas and then use it on them? I think what I used to do was mix it with salsa or tomato-based sauces to make them spicy, and then I would put that on tortillas, but this year there's been next to no tomatoes and I don't have my usual stuff.

I actually have to look this up! Also everyone please share with me how do you consume horseradish, I need some ideas.

Early Game Tip/Guide for Stardew Valley

A friend of mine has been having trouble with the EARLY early game, so I wanted to help them out. This’ll cover the very early game, and then I’ll cover some tips for the FULL first year. I’ll be putting the whole thing under a read more so it isn’t cluttering ppl’s dashboards.

I’ll have a general idea of what to do the first 3 days or so, and then move to general tips/year 1 tips!

If this gets good reception, I might do other guides if people need them! Just ask and ye might receive sfdgfhfsdgfs.

I’ll also update this if I remember something else or get an idea from someone!

Day 1

First thing, of course, is get your parsnips planted and watered. Go to Pierre’s afterwards. With your 500g, buy 3 green beans, 3 potatoes, and 2 cauliflower. While cauliflower, overall, sells for more, invest in POTATOES in your first spring. You’ll sometimes get an extra potato when you harvest them, so you can get more money overall.

Make sure to get 50 wood for a chest as well. Put your extra tools away that you aren’t using for extra storage space.

After those are planted, go to the south (Cindersap Forest, where Marnie’s Ranch and Leah’s cabin are located). Go ALL the way south to the sewer exit at the bottom right of the area, over two small bridges connected by a tiny island with a single maple tree on it. The area down south will sometimes spawn spring onions. Check this area every day in spring in your first year. Spring onions don’t give you MUCH energy, but it’ll still be good in the long run.

Chop down as many trees as you can or pick up any foragables you see (check the beach as well for foragable shells) to try and reach level 1 foraging. Once you reach level 1, you can get tree seeds- acorns, pinecones, and maple seeds- and can craft field snacks.

Do NOT chop down the tree stumps right now unless they’re in the way! Tree stumps still spawn tree seeds, and chopping down stumps do NOT give you foraging experience! Only chopping the tops of the trees give you experience!

Check ALL the trash cans (just make sure a villager doesn’t see you bc they hate it), because sometimes food items or algae/seaweed pop out. 

Don’t be afraid to eat foragables like dandelions, leeks, and horseradishes as well for energy.

Overall, if you can’t get enough energy-restoring items, don’t be afraid to go to bed early day 1.

Day 2

If you didn’t do it yesterday due to energy, go around your farm and scythe ALL the weeds/fiber you can. Sometimes they drop mixed seeds. Mixed seeds are random seeds you can plant. They’ll either give you parsnips, potatoes, or cauliflower seeds. But that means free seeds to plant! Easy profit. DO NOT CUT DOWN ALL YOUR TALL GRASS.

Willy will send you a letter. Go get the fishing rod, and fish in the ocean outside of Willy’s shop. Sell him any fish you get directly until about 2 pm or so, then go to Pierre’s with your new funds and get more seeds. Ideally potatoes, but if you wanna get a head start on an achievement, buy one or two of every seed- except fruit trees. You’ll need to sell one of every crop eventually. But you don’t have to worry about it right now if you don’t want to- you’ll have many more springs to come.

Check down south for spring onions. If you have level 1 foraging by now and can get tree seeds, shake the trees as you pass by. You get them more often by chopping them down, but shaking the trees can yield tree seeds for field snacks.

Spend today fishing, after that! Fish makes good money, and if you’re REALLY in a pinch you can eat the fish straight out of the ocean/river/lake. Or any seaweed/algae you fish up. Sometimes you’ll also fish up Joja Cola- a trash item you can consume for a little energy.

Day 3

It’s raining today, so you do NOT have to water! It always rains on Spring 3. If you’ve gotten money from fishing again after your initial stint, buy more seeds- you don’t need to plant them right away if the idea of all the watering is daunting, you can save them for when your first harvest is done and you need to replant.

If it’s a good luck day, spend the day clearing out your farm area around where you’re planting. Good luck days are the best for chopping trees because you’ll get more wood than on bad luck days.

If it’s a neutral or bad luck day, go fishing! You might fish up trash more often, but you’ll still be getting fish to sell! You can either ocean fish and sell to Willy directly, OR try at the mountain lake next to Robin’s house. Largemouth Bass are GOOD money early game.

No matter what you do, remember to check for spring onions!

General Early Game Tips

Check the tv EVERY day! It’ll give you tips, recipes, and you can check your daily luck and the next day’s forecast.

Build a Silo BEFORE building a coop or a barn! You’ll get a quest to build a coop after your first harvest. Do NOT do it right away. Get a SILO first, and then scythe up any grass on your farm! Don’t scythe all your grass (the tall grass, not the weeds that give you fiber/seeds) before you get a silo, because hay from Marnie is expensive at 50g per piece of hay.

Advanced tip for the previous one: Build ONE silo, and put a chest next to the silo. Use the empty barn/coop once you have it to grab ALL the hay from your silo and place it in the chest. Continue to scythe your grass and get hay, repeating the emptying process until all your grass is gone. That way you have a stock of hay before you get animals.

Once you have a steady supply of food and the mines are open, go to the mines as OFTEN as possible. If the day is neutral, good, or great luck, go mining! You’ll wanna get a head start on resources, and selling gems is good early game.

Wait for a rainy day to upgrade your watering can! Upgrading your tools takes two days: the day you give it to him, and the day after. Check the tv for when the next day is raining, and THEN upgrade your can.

Do NOT build the first sprinklers you get. Once you reach level 2 farming, you unlock the sprinkler crafting recipe. The basic sprinkler only waters 4 spaces, and it is a WASTE of copper and iron. Wait for the quality sprinkler recipe at level 6. It’s tedious to water, I know, but the quality sprinkler waters the 8 surrounding tiles vs the basic’s 4. A better use of materials.

Keep at least 1 to 5 of everything! You may end up with a lot of chests, but keeping a lot of things is REALLY handy. You’ll get little fetch quests from the bulletin board outside of Pierre’s shop often, and keeping a backlog of items helps with completing them- which gets you money and friendship points with the villager in question. This includes crops, fish, and mining materials like quartz and gems. I’d also advise keeping minerals from geodes after donating one of them to Gunther, as some are good gifts while others are used for fish pond requests.

Don’t forget animal tools! Marnie sells a bucket for milking cows, shears for shearing sheep, and heaters for your barns/coops! It gets real cold in winter, so animals need a heater placed in their respective buildings. Put one in every animal building you have- you only need one, don’t worry!

Make wild seeds! Wild seeds produce foragables for their respective seasons. Sell the spring, summer, and fall seed packets instead of growing them. The spring, summer, and fall wild seed packets sell for MORE than if you grew the seeds and sold the foragable items. Do NOT sell the winter seed packets!

General Year 1 Tips

Try and get level 4 foraging before Spring 15! You’ll get a passive perk that just says “+1 Berry harvesting”. From Spring 15 to 18, there are salmonberries in the bushes around Pelican Town. Whether you have level 4 foraging or not, collect these berries! It’ll help a LOT if you get two per bush, but if you check every single day you’ll get a lot of berries no matter what your foraging level is. They don’t give a LOT of energy/health, but because of the quantity you’ll get you’ll be fine.

Fish at the mountain lake when you have downtime! Largemouth bass are VERY valuable early game, if a bit tricky to catch.

Use low profit crops for energy! If you have extra parsnips from spring, you can either turn them into pickles later or keep them for energy/health.

Mushrooms or Bats! After a certain amount of profit is obtained, Demetrius will come to you and ask to use your farm’s little cave for an experiment. He’ll ask to either use it to cultivate mushrooms or invite a species of fruit bat to the cave. Mushrooms are produced every day, and you’ll get a random assortment of every mushroom species available (although their rarity plays a factor in how often they appear). Fruit bats leave you a slow supply of fruit- usually foraged berries, but sometimes fruit tree fruit as well such as apples, oranges, and cherries. Mushrooms are generally more valuable and common mushrooms provide good energy, while fruit bats are good for artisan goods and for gifts as fruit tree fruits are universally liked by everyone.

In your first summer, invest in Blueberries! In your first fall, invest in Cranberries! Both blueberries and cranberries give multiple harvests, and multiple berries per harvest. That means they’ll keep producing AND give you 3 berries per harvest. While the melon and pumpkin sell for more, you can get a few hundred berries within one season- upwards of a thousand if you plant a Lot like I do.

In the beginning of summer, you’ll unlock the bath house. The bath house is a hot spring building to the north in the mountains, initially blocked by boulders. You can sit in the water to regain energy!

Plant tree seeds outside of the bath house area. ALL the dirt around the bath house can have tree seeds planted. You’ll most likely get a bunch of pinecones, as there’s an abundance of pine trees both on your farm and in Cindersap Forest. Plant as many as you can, and let them grow to make a wood farm. I can get a full stack of wood because of how many trees you can plant.

Save some crops to sell at the END of a season! If you’re hurting for money, split your current harvest in half if you can and sell half. Put the other half away in a chest (preferably next to the shipping bin) to save for the final day in the season. That way you can be SURE you’ll have a decent amount to spend at the beginning of the next season.

Work on preserves jars and kegs asap, once you unlock their recipes. Preserves jars make jelly (from fruit), pickles (from veggies), aged roe (from fish eggs), and caviar (from sturgeon eggs). Kegs make wine (from fruit), beer (wheat), pale ale (hops), juice (veggies), and mead (honey). Buy some hops in summer and save them for when you get kegs! Hops also produce EVERY day, so be prepared for a backlog of hops!

Try and get animals in summer! Save spring for bolstering your wallet and equipment. Don’t worry about upgrading your coop/barn all the way right now, just get started on animals because animal products are very good your first year.

Upgrade things in winter! This can mean tools, or buildings! By winter you should have a GOOD bit of money and resources. Upgrade your tools as much as you can (you can do a lot of mining for ore in winter), and upgrade any coops/barns you have. You don’t HAVE to upgrade your house yet if you don’t want to/don’t plan on getting married anytime soon so, as you should have salmonberries still if you managed to collect a lot,  cooking isn’t a necessity. Mushrooms from the cave or fruit from the bats could also help here.

Buy animals in winter! If you can upgrade your coop/barn, get animals now while they don’t need to go outside. It’s a good idea to get pigs now if you can, as they take a long time to grow. That way they can come out fully grown and ready to get you truffles.

Winter seeds are good money! Every few levels, you’ll be able to craft wild seeds for each respective season. The winter seeds sell for more than just their packets alone, so grow them if you can! You can multiply the crop each time you harvest them most likely, so you can make a lot of money off of the foragables.

Mine and fish! Since you don’t have too much to do in winter, use the time to fish and mine for extra money and resources!

November is a time of reflection and relaxation, as it heralds in “blank slate” weekends, restful time alone, and the joyous return to honoring life inside the home. For many, October is so much fun there is barely space for peace and quiet. But now that the wild action of October is over, and you can pause to savor the crisp air and quietness of the November sky, I suggest you ponder the opportunistic question of “now what?”

The weather is colder and the atmosphere is darker in November – while the view from your bedroom window can be romantic and beautiful, the feeling outside is cold, damp, and sometimes gloomy. Just this morning we experienced our first freezing fog this season. It is this kind of weather that makes us crave coziness, warmth, and comfort. November allows you the opportunity to lean into the temptation to relax, recuperate, and maintain your health and spiritual wellness.

A List of Chill Magic and Practical Rituals for November November can be a time when you can create a sacred space inside your home. While indoors, it is a great time to take up hobbies and activities that allow you the opportunity to spend time with the most important person in your life: yourself. Contemplate what aspects of yourself you have been neglecting and use the downtime of the indoor months accordingly. My hope is that this list below honors the magic of being chill and the comforting energy of November.

🧼 Fall Cleaning: For me an organized house is a creative house. I don’t know if this is something that everyone feels, but I function better in an orderly environment. If you are like me use the first couple of weeks in November to clean and clear your home of clutter. Consider donating clothes, books, and food.

�� Bring in the Green: Try bringing some green into your home to liven the indoors. Herbs that do well indoors are basil, bay, chives, cilantro, lemongrass, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme. If you need some easy plants to work with try aloe, calathea, Christmas cactus, English ivy, jade, peperomia, philodendron, snake plant, and spider plant.

🕯 Warm Lighting: Try the warm and soothing glow Himalayan rock salt lamps and candle holders.

🔥 Purifying Incense: Burn a blend of frankincense, rosemary, and sage to purify your home. Allow the smoke to escape the home through cracked windows. 

🧿 Protection Spell Bottle: Put together a spell bottle to create a protective boundary around your home. Some suggested items to add to a protection spell bottle include rosemary, rose thorns, needles, nails, dimes, vinegar, garlic, obsidian, black salt, sea salt, tourmaline, black pepper, hyssop, rue, and dragon’s blood. Seal it with black wax and bury it in the front yard of your property.

❤️ Blessed and Loving Home Simmering Potpourri: This is an inviting simmering potpourri to bless a home with loving energies. Slice an apple and place in a saucepan. Add four cups of water. Add in a couple cinnamon sticks, three star anise seed pods, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a teaspoon of cloves, and a small piece of ginger root. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer. Allow the mixture to slowly cook and spread it’s inviting and loving fragrance through your home. Stir clockwise occasionally, and replacing more water if necessary. 

🛁 Relaxing Aromatherapy Oils: Use a relaxing oil blend in an oil diffuser to create a calming space. Essential oils that can help calm moods include lavender, sandalwood, frankincense, bergamot, ylang ylang, vanilla, patchouli, Roman chamomile, clary sage, and marjoram. 

💰Prosperity Spell for Holiday Funds: For this spell you will work with the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. Find a glass jar or container and adhere a picture of Lakshmi on it. In the bottom of the container place a piece of green jade, aventurine, or other crystal associated with money. The first money to place in the jar should be four new quarters, which you can anoint with patchouli or money-attracting oil. Place money into the jar each day, no matter how large or small the amount is. When it is time to empty the jar and access the holiday funds, be sure to put aside a small amount of the wealth you’ve attracted to donate to charity.

The Magic of Samhain Isn’t Gone (Where to Look Next)

While many will celebrate Samhain through October 31st and November 1st, there are those who chose to observe Samhain at the exact midpoint between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice. For 2019 that happens to land on November 7th. So, if you are enjoying the work with ancestors, divination, spirit communication, and banishment magic, don’t let it disappear now that it’s November. And, just because Samhain has passed doesn’t mean that the energy and magic of Samhain will instantaneously drop off. Garden Report 20.08.02

More leaves are falling. Autumn is impatient this year. I had the haw partially trimmed. It was a bit of a shame to loose all those under ripe haws but I only had a small window of when I had help. They are whacking them up in manageable pieces so perhaps some will ripen while on the ground and I can collect.

Need to make a chicken swing/climbing apparatus for Bronte.  She hears the little cock across the way and she’s all about it. I think her hormones may be coming into play or she is just a bossy, nosy chicken! She’s climbing on the water font and the feeder, causing her sisters to stress out because if Bronte can’t see/accomplish her goal, she’s mad at everyone and its trickle down aggression until she is distracted again (which is hard when romeo keeps calling all day long!).

My apples that were delivered where not gravs and I was bold enough not to accept them (’well we didn’t have a full field lug so we just brought the most we had’). No. Not even close to acceptable for what I wanted. Punky backyard apples that are low grade/juice only/cattle feed just won’t work for drying. Disappointment all around but I am not going to pay out top monies for cull.

More artichokes in the drier. I will probably get some late comers but I will let those bloom out for the bees. I don’t have many bees but do I have the bumbles! Hordes of those lovely ladies coming in for the late blooming borage. No one likes the ghost borrage.

In a couple of days I’ll dump the potato barrel. Debating pulling all the horseradish in pots and escapes in the pathways. Will pop those in the drier too once I make the decision to pull. And of course save some root pieces to plant again.

Have my trays prepped. Something is holding me back. Fear? Added burden on my family? It is getting harder for me to breathe. I do more resting than work it feels. I can’t keep putting it off on allergies (but my allergies do get wild when I’m stressed and am I ever stressed!). Pushing the lung care herbs, the one’s I can get. Finding it has been three months and still can’t get some of my meds. Using subs that aren’t quite adequate. Some “discontinued” due to C-19 use (whatever that means, people just shrug when ask ‘what?why?’). Not wanting on the heavy prescription because for me it does more other harm. I’m to the point I’ll have to dig out my oxygen generator and use in therapy mode since its getting harder to do the exercises or normal daily living. This is a drag because I am getting slower and I am not very accepting of this. But perhaps if I’m good now, I can go out and play more later. Something to look forward to. Have micro greens soaking in jars to sprout as to add with lettuce for salades.

Duscur Headcanons - Food

Disclaimer: these are my headcanons only and I am not trying to be a definitive expert on a fictional country in a video game that didn’t touch hardly at all on that country, much to my annoyance. Intsys did Duscur wrong by not giving us more info on it, goddammit!

The primary staple crops of Duscur are potatoes and rye, both of which are very hardy and can grow just about everywhere. Potatoes are not freeze-tolerant by any means, but by growing underground they can withstand spring frosts (fall frosts, on the other hand, tend to end the potato growing season). They also grow turnips, barley, and beets, though to a lesser extent. Sugar maples can be found in the south, and are tapped for their sap, but the labor needed to process it leaves maple syrup as a luxury food only.

Commoners in the south live primarily on a diet of potatoes and flatbread made with a rye base, along with anything foraged outside of town. Potatoes are typically cooked either as dumplings or in a stew with whatever else is available, or are mixed with flour and used to make gnocchi (which is then stuffed with foraged plants and often wild mushrooms.) Borscht, originally part of Faerghan cuisine, rose in popularity in Duscur thanks to the trade policies of King Lambert (it then sharply crashed in popularity thanks to the Tragedy of Duscur).

In the north, agriculture becomes incredibly difficult due to the climate, so the main means of food production are instead through fishing, reindeer herding, and the hunting of marine mammals. Meals in the north are meat and fish heavy, and make extensive use of blood and organ meat. Blood pancakes and sausages are common. Reindeer milk is often preserved by mixing it with angelica and leaving it to ferment. Fish is also frequently salted and fermented to preserve it.

In both regions, foraging is common. Many of the native berries are resistant to domestication and can only be found in the wild, and are frequently collected and turned into jam. Angelica patches are prized and carefully conserved, as are common mushrooming spots. Duscur does not have any deadly mushrooms native to it, so mushrooming is generally safe. The country does have fly agaric in the south, however. Fortunately, fly agaric is distinctive enough to prevent anyone from accidentally adding some to their potato soup.

An extensive road network means that foodstuffs from different regions are available to all, though typically most commoners will stay with their own specialties and only eat imported food on special occasions. The middle and upper classes often make a point of eating food from different regions, or at least they did before the subjugation of Duscur killed the majority of them.

Some Duscur spices are horseradish, mint, chives, tarragon, angelica, salt, fernweed, and sorrel, with horseradish and angelica having particular prominence in cooking.

In contrast, Faerghus considers potatoes a barely-edible famine food, doesn’t have reindeer at all and less access to marine mammals, and grows little rye. Both cultures also have different fish fermentation methods- Faerghus has better access to salt via trade with its southern neighbors and tends to more heavily salt its fish before fermentation. 

Dedue and Ashe’s restaurant in their ending most likely served a lot of potato and rye dishes, simply because that is what they would be most capable of growing on their own and I headcanon Dedue as being from southern Duscur.

April Activities 2021

The major news of the month? I can’t believe I get to be fully vaccinated. It’s hard to describe how incredible it feels but I’m so ready to really start this next phase and I can’t wait for everyone I love to feel this feeling soon. Here’s what went down last month.

Here are my favourite tweets from last month. Also, I’ve decided to compile the best tweets list every two weeks rather than only once a month mostly because I love re-reading them and want that sort of joy in my life twice a month, not just once.

I did Nathan’s podcast and we talked about Rogers, sex robots & god only knows what else.

Two new nail polishes that I bought and love: English Lavender by butter and Cold Brew Crew by essie. Beautiful colours.

I’ve made this lamb ragu from Alison Roman twice so far, it’s so luxurious but somehow easy to make. I’ve put it on tagliatelle as well as zucchini noodles and both have been wonderful. Small tip: it does get better after it sits in the fridge for a bit, for some reason. (Also, the recipe doesn’t call for it, but I added basil at the end. I tend to add basil anytime something calls for parsley because it’s just so much more flavourful and fun.)

I want to buy new underwear and I’m looking for any suggestions that aren’t Victoria’s Secret, Aerie or The Gap. I might just bite the bullet and try the ones from Blush (love love love the models they use).

I tried the strawberry short cake soft serve from Milk Bar and it was heavenly. The soft serve is even better than the strawberry cake (although the cookie crumbles within the cake always make my knees weak). In fact, I’ve yet to try a Milk Bar soft serve that I didn’t love (their vegan apple pie soft serve was out of this world), should I have been buying their pints this whole time? Yes.

I gave a chance to Ouai’s Air Dry Foam and it didn’t impress me or anyone else for that matter, so I guess I’ll just stick with the Wave Spray instead.

The rain boots that I bought a few years ago from Winners have disintegrated and I’m in search of new ones, but please don’t recommend Hunter ones. I hate Hunter. Open to any other suggestions!

Influenced by a TikTok video, I bought Falscara and holy shit. I know I promise this a lot, but I’m going to do a video on it so you can see how good a product it is. So many videos are coming, I vow.

There milk chocolate coconut almonds from CVS are UNHOLY.

I tried a sample of Glamglow’s Glowstarter moisturizer and was pleasantly surprised at how it really does give you a pleasant glow. What’s that about.

It’s uncivil how expensive body suit/swimwear hangers are. Who is this benefiting? I just want to hang my delicate bodysuits and carry on with my day.

Trader Joe’s has started selling their own vodka and I’m hoping they’ll start to sell it in New York soon. Seems weird that they don’t already.

I tried a small sample of Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Elixir and discovered that the true magic behind the elixir is how she got anyone to believe that it does anything at all. Makeup products truly enrage me at times.

Nathan and I went to a movie theatre and it was everything I wanted it to be and more. We saw Godzilla vs. Kong and I found myself beaming through every inane scene. Perfect movie to see after a year of no theatres. Would I ever watch it again? Good lord no.

I bought a lotion bar from Gift Box on Broadway in Astoria and I love it. I think I’d use it more if it were slightly smaller and more manageable, but I love it nonetheless.

I tried Rao’s spaghetti and it was incredible, so now I’m forced to seek out their other types of pasta. Such a quality pasta.

I ate at The Pineapple Club and the basil fried rice and frozen pina coladas were both outrageously good.

I bought this bag from Zara and I’m honestly nervous to even wear it out for some weird reason. Like, am I the person who would have a bag like this? Do I want to be that person? Am I feeling this way because of having nowhere to go for so long? Have I always been this fearful? Some of these questions I shouldn’t answer, I realize.

Just bought these shoes in tan and I think I have my life all figured out now. Now if I can just leave the house wearing said shoes and holding said bag.

Speaking of shoes, I truly can’t decide if I love or loathe these slippers.

Last shoe thing: head over HEELS (not sorry) in love with these feet hugging sandals. Should’ve bought four more pairs.

I made these chocolate banana muffins and they were great but the real standout is the recipe at the bottom for the salted honey butter. Christ, you should make that butter.

I perused Molly Baz’s new cookbook and it’s a big one. Some standout recipes: The Big Italian salad, a dilly horseradish cream sauce for shrimp, and of course her caesar salad recipe.

I never thought I’d be the type of person to buy fake plants, but this one is so lifelike and pretty that I had to get it. Plus it’s perfect for the top of a bookshelf.

It’s ramp season and I couldn’t be happier about it, you’ll hear more about my ramp creations next month.

I watched This is a Robbery on Netflix and don’t waste your time. Yes, it’s an interesting story, but save yourself a few hours and go read this instead.

I’m watching The Nanny and loving it. I’ve only ever watched a few episodes growing up, and I thought I would hate it because of how much everyone makes fun of Fran’s voice but her voice is fine! It’s wild that anyone ever said it was annoying. Also, the theme song is catchy as hell.

I rewatched Speed and it’s, of course, still great. What can’t Keanu do.

I watched the 90s movie The Crush and it’s really weird that movies like that would never have a chance being made today.

I’m all caught up on Riverdale now and… it’s hard to remember when it was really good. Maybe it was all Skeet Ulrich? Was that the main draw in my mind? I can see that making sense. In any case, it’s taken a turn.

There’s something so inviting about having good washroom rugs, I just got these soft-as-hell Threshold ones and I’ll never buy another brand again.

I visited the midtown Ideal Cheese Shop (been meaning to forever) and it’s such a great spot for NYC delicacies as well as, obviously, cheese. They had pre-packed bacon from Peter Luger and salmon from Daniel Boulud.

Things are already changing fast with new restrictions loosing in NYC, but did you know you can rent out a bar for an hour?

I tried the breakfast Beyond Meat sausage patties and surprise, surprise, they’re great. There’s nothing this company can do wrong. I’m becoming suspicious.

I got drinks and some small bites at Bar Dalia in Astoria and what a sweet little place! Would go again.

I finally got my hands on the kitchen-scented mini candles from Trader Joe’s (the scents are lemongrass, tomato leaf, fresh mint). They fill me with joy, unfortunately. I also got their grapefruit scented body butter, which goes on very smoothly but I’ve noticed it has a scent that’s slightly off-putting over time. I will not dwell on that fact further.

Had no idea that Banza made a pizza crust but I tried it and it’s wonderful.

I love seeing what promotional giveaways are planned for the upcoming baseball season but since we’re technically still in a pandemic, the Mets are only releasing what the promotions are each month (makes sense). So I’ve bookmarked the page to go look at on the first of each month.

I don’t eat a ton of fast food, but I’m sorry, some of these are genius ideas.

I’ll regret it if I don’t buy a box of these, right?

I know that it’s common to read an article about something and feel “that’s me!” but this one really resonates with me: “There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing.”

I was walking past a Home Depot in Queens and the smell of the sandwiches at Rocco’s was heavenly. I had just eaten, otherwise I would have leaped into line. Must remember to get a Philly cheese steak here next time. The Yelp reviews are calling me.

I bought this earring organizer from The Container Store and it’s perfect. Fully recommend. I also finally got a purse organizer and some shoe boxes that make me feel like I might be a successful woman in her prime.

In the Garden

It’s a bit of a nothing day here, cool, quite dark and there’s rain on and off. Thank goodness I’d taken some photos outdoors earlier in the week.

Although the Daffodils next door are in bloom and there are plenty of yellow drifts in the wider area, and they have been flowering for some time now, apart from the one lonely bulb in the side hedge and one in the middle of the lower lawn, this is as far as ours have progressed so far. We’ve had green stalks since December, I thought they were going to stay like that forever. Slow off the mark, but I guess they’ll be going strong when the others are over.

I’ve still not discovered my cream Hyacinth, so the ones we have are all blue. As I’ve said before, one was over a couple of weeks ago, one failed this year and the others are all at various stages. I might bring some indoors.

The Hazel Catkins are still going and there are buds on the trees now too.

Amelanchier Canadensis ‘Snowy Mespilus’ 

This is the specimen tree that I pin all my hopes on to attract Bullfinch. It didn’t work last year unfortunately but Blackbird and Thrush were all over it.

Lovely blossom, berries and autumn colour that provide year-round interest

This tree is a tall, hardy plant which fruits an edible red/purple berry, which is popular with the birds, bringing them flocking to your garden but can also be used to make jams and jellies. The white flowers in spring are reminiscent of ornamental cherry flowers, and the autumn colour of the leaves is fantastic, adding a new dimension to your garden's colour scheme.

Best grown either as a specimen tree or as a border piece, the Snowy Mespulis tolerates a wide range of soil and offers year-round interest.

It really is a pretty tree, although my chances of ever harvesting the berries to make jam are ooooh, let me estimate...I’ll go with zero, to less than zero!

Elsewhere and not where the wild Cyclamen are growing, we have more invaders through the weed membrane and stones.

I’ve been so pleased we moved the logs which are too big for the fire as they’ve proved to be a great edition to the feeding area. 

Although sometimes ‘table manners’ leave something to be desired ‘May I get down now’ takes on a new meaning.

The long ‘legs’ propped up against the palm are also very popular with Blue Tits and Nuthatch as well and the one that fell over in the wind, is now a handy perch.

This male House Sparrow gave me quite a choice of poses.

And here’s Nuthatch deciding on its next move, most probably to a seed tray where it’ll be sorting out the Sunflower seeds and throwing anything else all around.

GARDEN NOTE:

It’s been much quieter today, probably because of the rain, but Magpie has been here as a pair, not just the single. The Rooks have been in numbers, as have the Pheasants. The Stock Doves were getting a bit of bother from one particularly belligerent Wood Pigeon. There were absolutely loads of hungry House Sparrows and a quick visit from M Flambeau.

KITCHEN NOTES:

We had a lovely lunch today. Sourdough bloomer toasted with homemade smoked Mackerel rillettes. 

Fork and shred the Mackerel flesh having removed the skin for the wildlife to enjoy. Mix to taste with a blend of mayonnaise, plain yoghurt and creamed horseradish; season with salt, pepper and some lemon juice and mix in just a few very finely chopped spring onions and cornichons. It was delicious.

I’ve also been making Granola and seem to have produced enough for a large guest house. The kitchen smells lovely though and it looks great in the Kilner jars.

 WHAT DID I LEARN TODAY?

 I was looking at Plantlife co uk which says about Lesser Celandine,

Yesterday I was looking at the map and I decided I wanted to bike to Pescadero. Two reasons for this: I wanted bread. Also, I wanted to test my gearing and setup.

Before COVID blew up, I was planning to bikecamp to LA this year for bike anniversary (mid-May; it’s flex.), and get ice cream (bike anniversary always calls for an ice cream ride) at McConnell’s in Santa Barbara on the way, and visit my OG bicycle mentor Muneeb. SF to LA is a mandatory ride that many people I know, some of whom are not even that into cycling, have done. Also I was inspired by Matt Reyes doing the ride in 6 days on 47x17 and 47x19. (I know my strength and I would do it on a lower gear.) But now that dream is dead.

Gear setup: - gangster with 47x19, wide bars - I put a patch kit and CO2 kit in a tiny seatpost bag. - I used my Tunitas bum bag to hold my water bottle, a battery pack with iPhone cable, wallet, an old tube for bungee in case I needed to tie something to my bike, a strap from Box Dog Bikes (similar purpose), a sharpie (to deface things), and my phone while I was riding. - I wore some Rapha bib shorts that Ariel gave me (thank you forever Ariel) plus a Montiel sports bra, and my Underarmour hoodie. I don’t bother with jersey anymore. Fuck it. I want the all-over tan. Also wore some Spoke Easy socks which I really like, Heavy Pedal gloves, and my Adidas running shoes which I got many years ago from the boys youth section.

Pre-ride: - Moisturizer, sunscreen, kale salad with meal-prepped beans and corn and bell pepper and three flour tortillas I fried lightly and melted horseradish cheese (yo I love this horseradish cheese) on. - Light stretching in my lobby, then roll out at 7:57 according to Strava

Ride: Strava - By now I know the deal to get onto Highway 1. Slightly difficult Skyline bit that is between Fort Funston and Olympic Club, and then slightly more difficult two block stretch that goes from Valero gas station to the water tower thing. Then the terrifying (I hate descents, ok) descent on which I have to make a left on Crenshaw and get on Palmetto, which I always overshoot because I’m busy being terrified. This time I paid attention. I wasn’t terrified. Because I got my skids back and spinny ratio makes me feel invincible. - After this I went through Pacifica, then fixiecoasted down into Pacifica State Beach, then up that narrow winding bit to Devil’s Slide. - During the tunnel my music cut out so I just turned off my headphones and talked to myself the rest of the way. Flats are good for unwinding. - Then Half Moon Bay, then those three climbs that I did with not too much difficulty. Did some more fixiecoasting down the backs of those climbs. Passed by a fair number of cyclists going the other way and waved at them. - Got to Pescadero an hour ahead of schedule and thus bread was not open. Did not want to wait around so I just refilled my water bottle (ugh the water tasted like metal) and turned back around. - Climbs going back were not so bad. One in particular was a bit long, and the ground texture was bumpy. Descents were nice because I fixiecoasted them, plus I reveled.in the fact that I had climbed that same stretch just hours prior. Good job, self. Pat on the back for you. Got really comfortable with fixiecoasting (footbrake at the ready but rarely used). (Not a super useful skill but it is fun.) - I read that people don’t recommend LA to SF because it isn’t as enjoyable to ride on the inside of Highway 1. I would just like to say I disagree with this. I thought it was equally enjoyable. I liked looking at the plants. HAHAHAH. I didn’t take any photos (duh, I was busy riding) but there was a fabulous display of different lupines and Erigeron glaucus and I even saw a Sisrynchium bellum! I have never seen that in the wild. Also some Sambucus, some Eriophyllum, and some Castilleja. And a lot of poison oak. LOL. Thickets of it. Damn. Be careful y’all. - Seeing as I didn’t get any bread, I instead stopped at Dunkin Donuts in Half Moon Bay and picked up a few of my favorites. Then I ate 3.5 of the 4 donuts after realizing that I had no carrying capacity. I saved the remaining .5 for... - The last climb (and in my opinion, the only major climb), Skyline (the reverse of the descent that terrifies me). I misremembered it as four blocks. I think it is more. I lost count because I was focusing on 1) keeping my shoulders relaxed and 2) believing in myself. HAHAHAHA. Also I forgot to stop and eat the last half donut because I was so relieved the climb was over that I just kept going. - Made it the rest of the way home; super easy. Google Maps says it is like 47.5 miles each way, so I was trying to add some distance to make it an even 100 but my GPS messed up so I didn’t know how many miles I had gone. I think I only hit 98, but that’s fine. It was really annoying to try to add miles in the city because everyone was everywhere.

Post-ride: - Got home, showered, ate the same kale with beans and whatnot (that is all I eat these days), and the last .5 donut. Also drank a bunch of non-metallic water.

What I thought about on this ride: - This was a test ride, but it was also useful in being a means of catharsis for my life and the past week. I thought a lot about what I want out of my life, and who I want to be. I think that in life, my main objective is to feel capable. I know what I can do and what my limits are, and now I’m gonna try and push those limits a bit. Widen my comfort zone, little by little. It’s not about being comfortable with everything, so much as it is about knowing that I could reach a level of comfort with anything. So this ride is about me getting comfortable with the fact that I can do it. (...by doing it. HAHAHA) I’ve already done this ride, with Conrad last September, on Emily’s Bianchi. But I’ve not done it brakeless (btw first century on the gangster! yay little gangster), and I wanted to test my mental fortitude for if i were to ride to LA on this setup. Now i know the gearing is right (at least for this stretch), and I’ve also gained confidence, so that’s good. - During the three nontrivial climbs, I thought about 1) relaxing my shoulders, 2) all the people who love and support me and would be cheering me on at that moment, and 3) all the people (the same people) who inspire me to do this. Not just to ride, but to live life, and take advantage of that opportunity. I hope that I can return the favor and inspire them in the same way. I often source my motivation and power from anger, or self-flagellation, or other negative emotions. It’s not ineffective, but I am trying to make the shift towards more positive and self-empowering thinking. Also I made a mental list of powerful women that have influenced me and that I hold in high regard. Thank you for being my role models. (There are also powerful influential inspirational men in my life; thank you also, but I did not make a mental list of y’all during this ride.) - I biked past a lot of beauty (California, and Highway 1 especially, is known for that) and I thought about edges. In ecology, edges are the most productive in biodiversity and growth and resources. I think in life that is also true. When you have a collaboration between people, or a fusion between genres, that’s kinda like an edge. You get the best of both worlds, and something magical can thrive in that intersection. The result is greater than the sum of its parts. I look forward to one day being part of some sort of collab, once I have better defined myself and determined what I bring to the table. - What else did I think about: ummm. Mostly just loose/disorganized thoughts about life and people around me and work and how I can be more focused, and how things do get easier if you put in the work and the time, and how when I am biking I carry with me the people who support me, always. I hold you in my heart. lol.

***WARNING: STARDEW VALLEY SPOILERS AHEAD***

I started playing Stardew Valley one rainy Sunday last October. Outside my apartment it was stormy and bleak, the last dregs of summer disappearing in the cold. In the opening storyline of the game, I watched my character, a little 8-bit cartoon in overalls and pigtails, at her grandfather’s deathbed. “There will come a day when you feel crushed by the burden of modern life,” he says. “And your bright spirit will fade below a growing emptiness.” Oh no, I thought, feeling punched in the throat. My grandmother, who I shared a bunk bed with for almost a decade of my life, had just died in Shanghai; I’d seen her emaciated body in the hospital only a few weeks before. And I’d felt crushed by the burden of modern life literally every day since moving to New York. I felt stupidly, wildly seen. 

In the game, my dying grandpa gave me an envelope with a deed to a plot of land in a village far away. My character quit her desk job at a soul-sucking corporation, boarded a bus, and moved to the village. And so began my new life.

It’s hard to describe the appeal of Stardew Valley without sounding like you’ve fallen into a cult of delusion. You plant potatoes and harvest them; you tend to your chickens and cows. You learn real-life pasturing techniques to manage your farm! You fall in love with the village artist, Leah, a redheaded sculptor whose favorite food is Vegetable Medley; then, you change your mind and begin to pursue Sebastian, a moody, sensitive programmer. “I just don’t want to be part of the corporate rat race, you know?” he says. You swoon. You follow him around and give him sashimi out of your pocket twice a week. You have your first kiss under the full moon overlooking the city from which you both escaped, after he sweeps you away on his motorcycle. Suddenly, you realize you can make the whole village fall in love with you. You go ham. 

For the first 80 or 90 hours I played this game, I did not rely on guides online to help me optimize my gameplay. As such, my farm organization was a disaster and nobody liked me. (I gave Leah an Ice Cream I bought and actually felt hurt when she said she hated it.) My friend who had already had his Stardew Valley phase asked to see my farm, and I watched his eager expression freeze as I proudly showed him my hideous farm overgrown with weeds and stray rocks, all my collected items shoved into a few identical wooden chests clustered around my cabin. 

“I prefer the organic process of figuring things out,” I told him defiantly. “I’m following a Japanese farming philosophy of allowing land to return to its natural state.”

He nodded, barely concealing bewilderment. Then, bored at my own desk job one day, I watched one YouTube video titled “Stardew Valley BEST Farm Layout” and felt a gnawing shame at my ugly, shabby farm as I realized what I could have been doing with my past 90 hours instead. 

I started opting out of full-screen mode, so I could play the game with 20 tabs open on stardewvalleywiki dot com. “where is sebastian tuesday winter,” I googled. “stardew valley willy love egg?” I started giving villagers only gifts they loved; I spent weeks doing manual labor -- chopping down trees, hoeing land, building fences, buying lamps -- to redesign my farm. I felt a swell of pride when I grew my first giant pumpkin. And then, I learned every villager’s backstory and started liking even the most annoying ones -- I pelted Shane with Pepper Poppers until he started to open up to me, and I realized he was an asshole because he was clinically depressed. I stopped giving Pam beer because her alcoholism made her daughter Penny unhappy.

“It’s like you really become part of the community,” I told another friend earnestly, trying to explain my addiction to the Stardew Valley universe. He laughed, then stopped when he saw that I was only half-joking. 

From the back cover of one of our Moomin books - “I only want to live, plant potatoes, and dream” - lately Cissy and I have been saying it back and forth to one another with increasing insistence. The society we live in, the life to which we’ve grown desensitized, has been utterly ravaged by late capitalism. Every day in New York, in Midtown, I walk by homeless people shivering in blankets, plastic cups with just a few coins in front of them, businessmen wearing suits and Airpods briskly sidestepping them without ever looking down, surrounded by gleaming skyscrapers full of vacant luxury housing units never meant to house anyone. It’s revolting. It makes me feel physically ill when I think about it for too long. It’s also completely normalized. Every day I feel an existential scarcity from my unwilling participation in the wreckage of our society.

Stardew Valley opens a portal into a different kind of world. My friends and I are always talking about the ideas behind the gameplay -- what if we pooled money, bought a house somewhere far away? What if we created our own community? What if we rejected the structures under late-capitalist city living intended to keep us away from the things that bring meaning to our lives -- love, beauty, art, dreams. In Stardew Valley, you live out a concrete vision of this alternative.

There was a two-week period in the fall when Cissy was out of town, and I let days wash by me in bleary four- or five-hour stretches of watering crops, fishing, making friends with villagers. “what’re u doing,” she would text me. “just had dinner! going to the gym now,” I would text back from my bed, a boppy tune called “Spring (Wild Horseradish Jam)” ringing in my ears, before starting a new day in the game. 

In year three of the game, your character’s grandfather briefly comes back as a ghost. “You’ve done a good job with the place,” he tells you. You feel, genuinely, a warm glow, as you survey all the work you’ve done on your land and all the villagers you’ve grown to love. I, unbelievably, thought of my own grandmother.

My greatest regret was not getting into it at a time like right now, when I can literally spend all of my time doing nothing at home without feeling like a loser. Not that I ever felt like a loser when I was playing it. I felt like an integral part of another community, and a champion farmer.

This very simple recipe requires only that you mix the ingredients together,  bring them to a simmer, reduce the mixture by half and then cool. Once the mixture is completely cool it will be ready to use. You can add things like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and other spices to your syrup as well.

A homemade batch should last the full winter season.

Willow Pain Reliever Fever Reducer Containing the active ingredient of aspirin – salicylic acid– willow bark is a legitimate pain reliever and fever reducer. Not only is the salicylic acid in there; it’s also pretty easy to get out. It can be a serious treatment for things like colds, congestion and flu recovery. The best thing to do is try out a recipe and tweak it to your liking. Some people take it as raw shots, some drink it as tea or a base tea, and some people even marinate food in it! It’s a powerful little concoction.. Charcoal Poultice Charcoal is highly absorbent.
